I must have a different idea about what listening to music should be like than other people. I did not enjoy this album at all and from time to time was actively annoyed at it. The first song I liked was when Spotify moved on to another band. Hard pass.

Experimental, groovy, ethereal, industrial. It comes close to grinding my gears and me pulling my hair out, but it does so in quite the entertaining way. Though I will not find myself putting this on for fun, I do think I'd enjoy this very strangely, as long as it is infrequent enough.

Truly never heard any of their songs. Very interesting music. Just not my style. I definitely get it. Very artsy.

Ahh the Shoegazing genre. Never heard of it until I started on this list but well acquainted with it now. Actually I’m a bit of a shoeqazer myself. This is restricted to toiling up English Lake District mountains where steep ascents mean watching your feet plod steadfastly along. This is always done with AirPods in ears listening to my favourite combo’s and every so often averting my eyes from shoes and lifting my head up to enjoy the marvellous vista’s in every direction. Now I’m sure that these shoegazing pursuits will never involve this album. In fact the thought of this album accompanying me up the fair slopes of Harrison Stickle would besmirch the loveliness of that mountain. I know that this review does nothing in accessing the worthiness or otherwise of this album but the fact that it has nothing of merit gave me chance to wax lyrical about something of much more importance. Hill walking with for instance Pink Floyd, now you’re talking. I’d only take this album with me to dump in Mount Doom. 1/5 26/10/24

I keep trying to listen to this record, but can’t make it through the first song. Been saving this one until I finished listening. It’s been months and many attempts. Let’s just say it’s settled and the answer is that I don’t like as much as their older work.

If I wanted to hear one long distorted guitar riff I'd go into my brothers room and do it myself. That's how I felt on multiple tracks on here. Why is this on here? Because it's Anglo-Irish? What does that even mean? Just say Irish. Hm!!! That question made me google and Anglo Irish actually means British Irish so this feels very similar to someone trying to hide their face so they can sneak into a party. Enough with these mediocre British albums!!

The most recent album from this group, doesn't hit the highs that Loveless does, that's for sure. I'm frankly non-plussed by this. Saved a couple songs, but just unnecessary to me. Might be harsh, but don't care because I've got a lot of reviews to catch up on. Favorite tracks: She Found Now, If I Am. Album art: Hard to tell what we're looking at, heavy blue filter over what, a wall of pictures or something? The font is so juvenile, not sure if they were trying to be funny with it or not. 2.5/5

Lovely

My Bloody Valentine is great. They’re unique and original, both in a good way. Their experimentation pays off. It’s difficult to articulate the vocals at times, but I understand that it’s what they’re going for. That it’s less about what they say and more about the vibe the vocals give the project. Their vibe is firmly established, but I wish they had something more to say and were able to find a way to express it clearly. My only issue with them, though. 4/5

While My Bloody Valentine may be the progenitors of Shoegaze, it still doesn't make their music appealing.

This one took me a minute to figure out. Somehow I thought My Bloody Valentine was an emo band from like 2005. Once I figured out I was completely wrong about that I was able to enjoy this. I like the risks he took, and how original it is.

This group's name should be My Boring Valentine. Mostly just a lot of vaguely rhythmic background noise.

It’s no loveless

I have to admit, based on the love I had for their 1988 debut when I heard it for the first time months ago, this was an underwhelming listening experience. The droning guitars were slightly irritating; I felt pushed away from the music rather than pulled into it. Only two songs were winners for me (“who sees you” and “in another way”), so it seems only appropriate to rate this as a two. If I want to get my My Bloody Valentine fix, it’ll be their earlier albums. Having said all that, a bit of a rant: as a Journalism major, I HATE the apparently long standing trend of artists forgetting all their grade school education and they only use lowercase sentences… ugh!

When I was about 15, a couple of buddies and I had an "avant-garde rock" band called The Eternal Time Clock. None of us were particularly good musicians -- we just liked to mess around with noise and overtracking. If we'd kept at it, we could have aspired to be MBV. This album has two purposes: background music while you work (especially if you have ADHD) and doing drifty drugs. If you're a fan of Loveless, then you'll probably like this -- even though it's even more unfocused. Otherwise, I could see this being a really challenging listen for many.

When this turned up I was skeptical on a My Bloody Valentine reinvention but it turned out to be very lovely, dark and moody - got to listen to it on runs on Welsh Coastal woodland runs and it was very apt. Its a record’s record - meant to be heard it it’s entirety to fully appreciate - and it presents a full evocative journey.

An album I own on vinyl, but haven’t given it as much time as I should have and this has prompted my to do just that, I love the previous two and been fortunate to see them live twice, Barrowland and Southbank Centre, it sounds like it would reward with repeated listens.

Self titled album 30 years in. Not bad for doing work, but not that great.

Love the sound but think I would enjoy it more if it was a bit more vocals forward.

4/10 - I do not know why but I thought My Bloody Valentine was a punk rock band. The music was not necessarily bad and there were some interesting parts but overall it was just kind of boring.

It's funny because it's close to the truth, it's an interesting sound but at times it makes me feel a bit disoriented. I do like noise rock, but not shoegaze, this isn't for me.

This is one of those albums that I know the band’s name and nothing else before listening. Now that I’ve listened I’m happy to report I haven’t missed a thing. A lot of this sounded the same…annoying.

Ffs, not another My Bloody Valentine album. This is my third of theirs that I've had so far. Ever wonder what shoegaze would sound like underwater? If so, these idiots may be for you! Super fuzzy distorted instruments and moaning. No clue what the singer is saying...... Utter garbage. The idiots couldn't even be bothered thinking up a cool album name.... "let's just use the band's initials!".... Anything else may be considered work..... Fuck these guys. Also, the prize for shittiest album artwork across all of their albums has to go to these tools. Shitty nonsense, or out of focus photos. Nothing at all about this was enjoyable. It all ran together into one 46 minute steaming pile of horse shit. I've checked, and this is their last album. They only have three. So all of their records were included on this stupid list, while many more deserving acts weren't even included on this list. Revisit your musical tastes you fucking muppets. Their magnum opus didn't grab me and neither did this

An album that encapsulates just how perfect "Loveless" was: "Isn't Anything" was too much in the post-punk vein, where the band hadn't fully fleshed their sound out. This record is too fleshed-out. The tones on here are gorgeous, but in crafting beautiful tones, they forgot to have songs that weren't just noise. It's pretty noise, for certain, and I'm the type to take an edible and enjoy the floating sensation this record will give, but it does end up being just... noise. Favorite tracks: "Who Sees You", "New You"

If the sound you heard from Tinnitus was an album, it would be this one. The biggest compliments I can give this album are that I was mildly indifferent to it at times and that it ended. If I never hear this album again, I will be happy and content.

A pleasant enough listen but nothing ground-breaking for me here.

Best Song: who sees you. This had at least a sort of appreciable energy to it that I could get behind. Worst Song: if this and yes. Fully put me to sleep. Overall: Stop making me listen to these albums. It's all so tremendously monotone. I can only imagine wanting to listen to this while coming into (or out of) anaesthesia. Otherwise, this style of sedate and prolonged music does nothing for me.

It's not as bad as my first listen, but it's still dreadful

Hard no.

While the album isn't as consistently fuzzy as their prior album, as the fuzz is mostly abandoned after the third track, the entire album captures this dreamlike state of exploring an abandoned town, but rather than feeling fear you instead feel at peace. This feeling may be familiar to those who've listened to Cocteau Twins' more ambient records, and I'd say while the overwhelming emotion that comes from heavy distortion is missed on this record, its ethereal substitute feels very mature and is a perfect natural progression after nearly twenty-two years in the melting pot. It isn't as mind-altering, or as much of a force to be reckoned with, but it is something to just gaze into. Like a Summer's night to Loveless' Summer's day, this album may not be a worthy follow-up to some, but in my mind this just feels like a natural conclusion is a sound decades in the making. That being said, I wouldn't mind a fourth album, Kevin...

Recorded/released 2 decades after the peerless Loveless. Some of the tracks seem to be a homage of that album though there are some more interesting tracks near the end. Seems worthy but also irrelevant.

Really forgettable.

The buzz saw got old. The songs don’t seem to have actual human melodies.

I found this one a bit hard to care about. I guess MBV would have made an interesting live experience, though necessarily a pleasant one. Weirdly melodic, but so drenched in noise, distortion and feedback that it's difficult to sense the landscape. It's bit like driving and finding yourself in the middle of a rainstorm, and looking through the windshield. All forms distorted, barely shapes. And you quickly feel disoriented and a bit lost, even as the path you are on is a familiar one, one you have taken hundreds of times. All of a sudden these curbs are dangerous. Everyone around you is as lost as you are.

"Souvlaki" should have been on here instead of giving mbv three spots on the list. This one isn't very good. They took out everything that made "Loveless" so special and beautiful and replaced it with even more noise. Almost sounds like outtakes from that era.

I wasn't really a fan of this one- it wasn't interesting enough to grab my attention at any point while I was listening. Felt like I could fall asleep at any second.

Op zich kan ik dit soort muziek best hebben, maar het is wel een uitdaging. Ze doen hun best om zoveel mogelijk geluid te maken, zonder dat er iets van melodie in zit. En het klinkt alsof je expres door een deur heen moet luisteren, of dat een plaat de hele tijd overslaat en op repeat staat. Lastige kost. Wie weet als je je er aan over kan geven en verder niks om handen hebt, behalve misschien wat verdovende middelen, dat het geniaal is. Maar ik ben gewoon aan het werk en dan laat het zich toch lastig luisteren. Dan was zelfs Tom Waits die ik net draaide een stuk radiovriendelijker. Meer dan 2 sterren kan ik er nu dan ook niet voor geven.

An interesting sound by My Bloody Valentine, the first of their stuff I believe I have heard of theirs. However after 22 years of not releasing an album, perhaps they should have left it where their band belongs - back in the early 90s. I just listened to an hour of noise. Was it unpleasant noise? Not always, but it's hard to think of it as music when you can hardly understand the vocalist and the sounds all blend together. I haven't listened to 'loveless' yet, but this gets a hard no from me. 1.5 stars, rounding up to 2 'cause it wasn't as annoying as the Tom Waits record I'd listened to yesterday.

Is this the worst album of all time?

So far, this is the first album I have no previous experience with. Not a band I know other than by name. The opening few tracks were boring and reminded me of late 90's garage band noise with no breaks, just constant sound with barely intelligible (or audible) vocals that drone on. One tolerable tune, but I'd never listen to it a second time. Again, not a 1001 album in my book, I can't see any reason to include it based on influence, revolutionary sound, or anything. Did they get better in later years? I can't make out why they would have had a career at all, nothing stands out. I got thru it quickly as I didn't relate to any of it, nor would I ever want to hear a single song a second time. Worst choice to date.

On one hand, if you make a wall of sound and you sing like that, no one's gonna hear it. On the other hand, if you sing like that, I don't even want to hear it. Same problem I had with the Jesus and Mary Chain the other day. But this is not as bad. At least it doesn't sound like it was recorded in a toilet. Some riffs are cool. Songs are too long. I really did enjoy listening to this but it was also almost totally background.

Woozy, dreamlike yet heavy at the same time - it pulses with something vital. A lot to take in for one sitting, but a powerful, strange miasma of psych fug. Pretty cool!

Ar first it sounds as if over 20 years never happened. With the progressing running time the pop ekements take over, blend in beautifully and make the whole oeuvre dreamlike.

So. My Bloody Valentine. M B V. m b v. Ah yes here we go. There it is. Droney, spacey, ambient, shoegazey -- hey, spell check, quit yelling at me, because I ain't listening. I can spell tociluzimab and Bill Sienkiewicz without questioning myself. If you know what it is from their older releases, don't be too shocked here. I'm at a bit of a loss as why this one in particular is on here instead of, say, Loveless, but I'm not the nerd that came up with this. I'm a nerd following along. The instrumentations flow like they were an extension of nature. The vocals, too. I honestly don't know what they're saying without looking at the lyrics, so it could be about the Armenian genocide or a recipe for Beef Wellington (do NOT let that shit go out raw!) but the presentation is less dependent on the words here. Since it is a bit spacey, I tried a little bit of playback at double speed. Not as amusing as playing something like Cursed - I or Ride the Lightning at 33 instead of 45. That, you ride out.

Big surprise here as I have always pigeonholed this band into "shitty alt-goth I will never listen to". Well... here's where I admit I really like this. It's definitely mood music, not something I'd listen to all the time, but the pulsating textures of almost ambient sound they create are incredibly interesting. It can easily serve as good background music you ignore while working, but is also something that you can focus on and lose yourself in, finding new intricacies the deeper you dive. Reminds me A LOT of a more guitar-focused Slowdive.

It started out good and I enjoyed the first couple of songs. But as time went on it really started to sound exactly the same.

On the first track, I had to play something else on my speaker to make sure the static sound wasn't because the speaker was broken before switching back. Later songs are not quite as noisy, but still a bit too much for my taste. There is something about ethereal music, but it's not really my thing - I like my music to have a bit more direction. Either it annoys me or I forget I'm listening to it - both mean a 2.

I really disliked this one

I'm not a fan of shoegaze, and this only helped confirm that opinion. I honestly thought the stream had glitched at a couple points. Distortion can be artfully done, but its use here just felt antagonistic. Giving this 2* only because the latter half could be decent background music if you're feeling particularly melancholic.

It took 22 years for Kevin Shields to record a follow-up to *Loveless*, a pivotal and timeless record for every noisy shoegaze fans out there... So you can bet your boots expectations were sky-high when *mbv* was released. And yet the latter delivered, even exceeding expectations on key moments. No dud, all killer no filler. Many cuts (the dreamy "she found now" and "only tomorrow", catchy banger "new you", the rhymically and harmonically hectic "in another way"...) would have fitted right into *Loveless*'s tracklist, actually. For any other "legacy" band, this would mean that you're just stuck in the past, yet My Bloody Valentine's magnum opus was so groundbreaking and influential that the usual rules about treading old ground can't apply here. There is indeed a melancholic, chiaruscoro poetry to the Irish band's sound that makes it stand out compared to all its followers. And there's also a manic, obsessive attraction to layers and depth that belies its apprent droney surface. This album even ups the noise-rock ante with its challenging last two cuts "nothing is" and "wonder 2", where guitar tones wince, wail, drill, tremble and enchant, helped by the ever-eerie vocals of Bilinda Butcher. Punishing for folks not attuned to off-kilter rock music (a sad majority?), but pitch-perfect for everyone else. 5/5. Number of albums left to review: less that 150. Numbers of albums I'll keep in my list: half approximately (including this one) Numbers of albums I might keep: a quarter, approximately. Numbers of albums I won't keep: another quarter.

It was interesting reading up on the production of this album, as many will notice the two decade gap from MBV's previous studio album to this. Sounds like there were some recordings completed prior to the band's breakup, pretty much making "mbv" a mishmash of both old and new work. You can kinda hear that here, though. There's not really much of a flow across tracks. The only other MBV album I've listened to was their debut album earlier in this list and this just feels like more of the same: the obscured vocals, and atmospheric, distorted guitar sound that MBV is known for. This just reaffirms that I still don't care much for shoegaze. That leaves one more MBV album yet to appear for me on this list ("Loveless"), maybe that one will finally impress me, but I doubt it.

I listened at bedtime which suited the music until the last two tracks ! Nonetheless I quite enjoyed the rest so 3*

My second favourite of them

Perhaps it was just the right album at the right time, but this one doesn't resonate quite as strongly as their 90s foray. The Standouts however are If I Am, and In Another Way for Butcher's vocals.

I kinda hated this, made meca bit nauseous. I really dislike giving 1 star because this is someone's creation and other people will love this so I feel bad criticising but wow, not for me at all.

m b v is another album on this project that i have mixed feelings on. There are some songs on this album that are legitimately stellar even if they are seen as just \"noise\". I honestly feel that i have a bit more of a fondness for these \"noise albums\" than most other people do since i find that while they can sound annoying at first, once they sink their teeth into you, they actually can be quite the ear candy which is benefitted by the fact that here, the songs are long enough to really sink in. Unfortunately, not all the songs here are like this. The others are just kinda boring and, like the good tracks, are pretty long too in some cases. But kinda boring is the worst this album ever really got, I still quite like it. Best Song: who sees you Worst Song: is this and yes

This was a much softer sound than I expected from a band called My Bloody Valentine. All these years I’ve heard their name but never their music, I assumed that they were some kind of hard rock/pseudo-metal band that played on the same bills as bands like Slipknot and Korn. But here we are, and the sound is much more airy and less aggressive than I ever would’ve imagined. All that said, this was mostly pretty boring. A lot of the songs sounded the same and I was surprised this wasn’t their debut. I’d forgive them more if it was. But this is three albums into their discography and this is clearly their sound. I don’t get the hype at all with these guys. There were some solid tracks (see below), but mostly I just didn’t care. Sorry guys. Two stars. Standout tracks: who sees you, new you, in another way

This is my first My Bloody Valentine album to review, but not my first album of theirs to listen to. A while ago, I was looking for something off of the list to listen to, and settled on Loveless, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Fun fact: I'd heard the band's name mentioned several times before listening to Loveless, but I never knew they were shoegaze. I thought they were a 2000's emo band, but I think I got them mixed up with Bullet for My Valentine. Regardless, I've been looking forward to getting to review a My Bloody Valentine album, and I was excited to see this album come up for me today. Unfortunately though, this album didn't live up to my expectations. I found the first half of the album to be pretty boring. I don't mind fuzzy guitars and distortion, but there just wasn't much going on in terms the sound of the album, and it felt like these first several songs were just 'cut-and-paste shoegaze' without offering anything unique. I really didn't like the softer vocals on the first couple of songs either. Thankfully though, the album turned a corner for me with "new you." I really loved the echo of the guitar and the brighter sound of the overall melody. The drums were really great as well. "in another way" was probably my favorite song on the album. The pulsing guitar and the brighter tone that played underneath it were great. The songs after that were really good too; the pulsing drum on "nothing is" and the faster pace of "wonder 2" were really unique, and these songs gave the album more depth and a better overall feel. I certainly didn't hate this album, but if I were to listen to it again, I'd skip the first several tracks.

First time listening to My Bloody Valentine and I hope it's my last.

I remember the huge anticipation before this album was released in 2013. It was their first album since the masterpiece Loveless from 1991, so it was understandable. I love this album though it is not as great as the masterpiece Loveless, and Isn't Anything is also a bit better. However they have a totally unique sound which hasn't changed over the decades, and this album is also quality music that was enjoyable to listen to - I'll give it a 4.

cool, beautiful, noisy sounds but most of the songs kind of wash over me. Loveless is a great album but I've never been as into it as many others and this one certainly pales in comparison to loveless. Great late night vibes but not something I see myself coming back to very often. ~6/10

It's like listening to early pixies... like before they ever got an album deal or played a gig or wrote a song or woke up on any day.

This album is older than 10 years now so it can officially be said: Classic! Continuing the sonic direction of Loveless while further deviating and experimenting with it. Can’t wait for the next one (this year for sure)

This goes for a vibe more than anything, which is good because the rest doesn't do much. Instrumentals are bland, the distortion washes everything out, and the vocals barely show up. I know it's what they're going for and that's what keeps it from a 1, but this isn't great.

This is inoffensive. It's a nice listen but nothing popped me. Might not even be on the list anymore.

I hope no one actually waited 22 years for this. Even if you liked “Loveless”, it doesn’t add anything really interesting to the MBV formula. Shoegaze sucks.

This album got a lot of hate in the reviews, and I can see why. Shoegaze isn't pop music. But it's not as terrible as these reviewers would have you think. I enjoyed the layered sounds and droning vocals. I did have to check the time on some of the songs, to see if I needed to skip. Overall I didn't love this, but I didn't hate it.

Sometimes I get an album that doesn't fit my mood, even though I know its good. This was the oposite case: I really needed some beautiful noise in my ears while doing monotonous tasks at work. However, it did go to autoplay and I didn't realize until I had heard five random songs from the same genre. So yeah, its not unique. I still like it though.

Really hard to look up if their stuff gets used in movie soundtracks when there are “My Bloody Valentine” movies

Not my go to MBV album, only really listened to it once before, but really enjoyed it this time around. 1st few songs start off slow, but I get completely lost in the dreamy thick distorted soundscapes as the album continues.

Well wanted to hate it but then I kind of liked it? mixed feelings, was good to listen to in background. 3.5

To me this is pretty mediocre. I feel like their other earlier albums were much better. Maybe this is a more mature version of the band. I probably won't listen to this album again.

There's clearly some musicianship tucked into these recordings, but there's so much noise in the midrange that it's impossible to cut through it all. I don't get the appeal.

I'm not as familiar with MBV - they were obvious early pioneers in shoegaze and I find this reunion album to be really interesting. Good background music while working/reading. I will definitely be going back through their older stuff now. 3/5

Love this one. It’s got a vibe that’s good for driving and for sitting back and smoking a j with friends.

This is my second MBV album and I recall not caring for the first one. I maybe liked this a smidge better? I can understand why other people would like this but I don't. It's a bit too ethereal for me. Maybe more of a 2.5.

Some of this was painful to listen to. There were a couple of good tunes on here, but I'm definitely never gonna stay away from this album.

Este fue un retorno por sorpresa que nadie les había pedido, pero que continuaba la senda de sus logros (tanto los del excelso Loveless como los del excelente Isn´t anything). Como pasó con otros retornos (Dinosaur Jr., Slowdive, Portishead y , en menor medida Mazzy Star o Ride, desde luego no con Pixies ni por supuesto con los Stooges) la banda mostraba niveles de inspiración propios de sus mejores tiempos con novedades como esos ritmos en New you, esos teclados en Is this and yes parecen sacados de Pet sounds o de cualquier disco de los High Llamas para luego pasar a integrarse en lo más pop que hayan publicado MBV, hasta que se acaba el cuento con In another way y Nothing is (pareces estar dentro de una lavadora). Desde la inicial She found you te encuentras como en casa con su trémolo, su efectos de reverb, Only tomorrow, Who sees you y If I am son otras gemas con sus coros espectrales (Bilinda Butcher es a MBV lo que Kim Deal a los Pixies) , sus capas de guitarras y distorsión... Wonder 2 es formidable, aunque el disco entero es excelente. Se acaba y vuleves a darle al play. Listened to it a few days ago and nothing is memorable about it

My headphones died in the middle of listening to this...that was the happiest I was in this last hour listening to this piece of hot garbage. Are they trying to be edgy and make bad music to make a point or are they just really bad at this? I don't know if it makes a difference for me from a rating perspective but I need to know that people don't unironically think that this is good. This is the worst kind of emo music.

This was such a long awaited follow-up, my expectations were definitely high. While it is hard to live up to Loveless, m b v was probably the best result anyone could have hope for after two decades. In many ways it picks up right where its predecessor left off, but it also sounds surprising fresh. There are delicate lush moments throughout, but there are also some sharp corners that give the album an interesting edge. I wouldn’t say this is a classic like Loveless, but it’s the next best thing.

MBV don’t deserve 3 Clearly this list is too long.

I really want to like this band, but I just can't really get into them. It's fine as background music, but the vocals are so buried and there's so much droning that it kind of just hypnotizes me and puts me to sleep if I try to focus on it too hard. Maybe I'll give it a few more listens and see if it grows on me, but as of now it's pretty meh. I'll say that the drums were kind of fun on "Nothing Is." 3/5

MBV carry on doing what they're good at with zero attempts to update the formula. Soaringly beautiful in places, discordant and unlistenable in others.

Starts well. The middle part drones. Ends OK. It gets a passing grade but nothing more.

This album is about as interesting as a beige painted wall. "Background noise" is probably a more appropriate term for it than "music".

Actually enjoyed this one. I had listened to an earlier MBV album as part of this project and apparently hated it. But this one was a weird listen but overall solid noise. Not exactly a genre I’m super into but I definitely vibed with a good portion of it. Not exactly a repeat listen, but glad I was reco’d this.

"m b v" is the third studio album by Irish-English shoegaze band My Bloody Valentine. It was their first release of original material since their 1991 classic album "Loveless." It was self-released and self-produced by singer/guitarist Kevin Shields. All the other original band member remain the same: Belinda Butcher (vocalist/singer), Debbie Googe (bass) and Colm Ó Cíosóig (drums). The album reached #29 in the UK and had much critical acclaim. Surprise! Surprise! Surprise! The first song "she found now" has distorted/feedback guitars and dreamy vocals. No drums though. The vocals are very muffled. I think it's about a woman who cheated on a guy but still loves him. "only tomorrow" adds drums and a distinct bass. The wobbly buzzsaw guitars are still there but much more melodic. Layered guitars. This song sounds like it could have come from "Loveless." The strong first three songs concludes with "who sees you." Dual lead vocals with Shields and Butcher. They harmonize. Great building the intensity of the song as it progresses. A guitar sounding like a synth ( I think) and an electronic drumbeat begin "new you." More guitars. Shields and Butcher singing like instruments. I don't know if anything of what they're singing are words. Wow! This is almost danceable. Weird noises and a fast drum and we're into "in another way." A nice change of pace from "new you." Chugging and machine-like guitars. Another song with a really nice melody and a unique one at that. 23 years later and My Bloody Valentine still have the distorted, wobbly, buzzsaw guitars in the forefront. It is hard not to compare to "Loveless" but there's enough here that's different. There are minimal vocals which are always in the background. Needless to say, it's very atmospheric. There are a couple songs that don't work. But, most do work with a couple among the best songs I've heard from them. Maybe not quite the groundbreaking album as their previous one but a very strong album.

Not my kind of music. Some of it didn't even seem like music at all.

This was a tricky one. I know the bands name but don’t think I’ve ever actively listened. Those droning, dissonant bends made me queasy. I know that’s the point. It just didn’t hit for me. Maybe someday in the future.

Boring at times, exciting at times. The rhythm and percussion department absolutely shine bright on this album and the lead/vocal melodies are rather soothing and romantic. Chaotic blend of grunge & noise with almost falsetto vocals. Wild mix.

Kinda like it

The album has a noisy-guitar sound that reminds me of Catherine Wheel. It has understated melancholy vocals. It's the kind of sound I would have really gotten into years ago. There was only one track that I really got into, the popular one: "Only Tomorrow". Conversely, I really hated "Nothing Is" - that's basically unplayable. The rest of the album is fine.

I love "Loveless" so surprised that I loved this less. It's all the same elements, but they just don't feel like they hang together right. Feels like a B-sides and outtakes album.

Dreamy fuzzy wall of noise reminiscent of a softer Sonic Youth, a more rocking Stereolab - or even some of the songs from Dave Grohl's first solo album ('Exhausted' in particular comes to mind.) A little bit of sameness as the album wore on, but largely enjoyed it until they tried to mix it up with the last two industrial garbage songs.

I really, really dislike this band. This album is even worse than the "loveless" trash I had to endure before. Normally I am very open ans positive for various genres, but shoegaze so far seems like a crime against humanity to me. It guarantees to put me in a bad mood. I think the art behind it is to make the most annoying sound as possible and this alone annoys the hell out of me. To say something positive: "new you" can nearly considered to be a song... just not a good one.

I can’t say I really like this album. A couple of songs were good and I could see potential. Then there was Nothing Is….which sounded like the needle was skipping back the whole song. I am not a fan.

Sure it can't really compete with 'Loveless' but what can. Nobody does it like My Bloody Valentine does, so even if this isn't their best, the deafening wall of sound that masks those sweet pop songs hiding underneath is still worth a 5 to me. Over the course of this album i found myself increasing the volume steadily throughout, until I finished it at about twice the volume I started it on.

Yessir! Some lovely palette cleansing shoegaze and feedback. Was just feeling like I'd been on a bit of a poor run, and this was marvellous. The final two tracks are maybe just a smidge too heavy for me. I'm all for distortion and noise, but there's got to be a melody, and I feel they lost it a little. Overall though, a cracking listen to a band that I've always known from a distance, but now intend to get much closer to.

In short, this album is experimental. It ticks all the right boxes of an experimental album and leaves me feeling dreamy afterwards. A lot of the songs are long, but that only makes the experience better, in my opinion. This album deserves an 86.7%, or a 4.33/5. Fav: “if i am”, “new you” Least Fav: “is this and yes”

Since the first time I got MBV on this list, I have come to really enjoy shoegaze. However did this really need to be on here? It's fine but nothing amazing.

Amazing rainy day album, sounds so familiar tho I’ve never heard of them. Rock/indie vibes. Something unsettling, yet so comforting that’s created in this album. Lots of dissonance which you don’t get to hear much and is also very hard to do properly. It’s the stuff that tickles your brain in all the right wrong-ways. I think I like it extra cause I love sci-fi movies and a lot of the great ones from recently feature music similar to this. Type of dystopian feel

I don't get it? The album title is an amusing reference to the band, but the whole aura of the album was lackluster. It felt like Lana Del Rey but with punk and not at all interesting or inspiring. At least the album sounded cohesive?

I mean, this album just wasn't very moving for me? It was like lo-fi, somewhat ethereal, somewhat ambient, somewhat grungy noise rock. I liked it okay, and it was fine for background noise, but not really worthy of this project, in my opinion.

As Wikipedia says \"Not to be confused with Bullet for My Valentine.\" Yet, for a moment this morning I did and was looking forward to the time I'd sit down an listen to the daily album. Disappointment after disappointment I found it hard to listen to all of it and yet I did. 1/5.

A bunch of my favourite bands have shoegaze elements to them, so I always find myself optimistically starting albums like this, before almost immediately realising that it's depressing, droney bullshit. It's so fucking miserable! Christ. Turn that frown upside down guys! Go outside for a bit, sniff the fresh air.

Thoughts before listening: My Bloody Valentine's comeback album. I constantly see them get raved about by music journalists and I never really got it. So far on this list I've had their pre-Loveless album and it was fine. I'm sure I'll enjoy this as well. Review: I dont really like this. It's all just so droney and many of the songs don't feel complete. Every song is just a wall of noise with whispered vocals. I remember liking a few songs on the earlier album that stuck to more typical late 80s alt rock sound, but that is missing from this album. I'll give it 2-stars for at least being interesting even if it isn't actually enjoyable.

After a long hiatus, MBV released this later period album. Is this an improvement upon earlier works on this list, Loveless and Isn't Anything? Sadly not. Feels like a re-tread or parody and just doesn't carry the same spark their earlier work did.

mbv! I’m a fan and always have been. This record could have been a huge risk as Loveless was a milestone record for the band and the genre. The wait certainly paid off and this album, while just shy of the greatness of Loveless, is excellent.

Two decades to make this album and it's pretty great. Hope we get another before 2033.

My Bloody Valentine is a band that could probably be a favorite of mine if I listened more, but I just haven't really. I've liked everything I've heard, but just have never quite fallen in love. I liked this album. Didn't love it, but liked it a lot.

My most charitable assessment of this album is that it sounds a little bit like Cocteau Twins and has a very ethereal ambient sound. My less than charitable assessment of this album is that most of it sounds monotonous and I can barely distinguish the vocals from the rest of it like it's sort of a low-level wall of noise. This is the first album of theirs that I'm listening to on the list. And from what I can tell their other album Loveless is reviewed well. I'm looking more forward to listening to that than this album. The last four songs are a little bit better than the rest, with new you as my favorite because I can hear the instruments not covered in reverb noise.

- Habs aufm Laufband gehört fands irgendwie richtig geil. fast schon meditativ, hypnotisierend - ein paar Tunes haben ein bisschen mit diesem schwingenden, anhaltenden Teppich gebrochen, sodass es auch nicht zu noisy-drone mäßig wurde. - Schlägt gerade aber auch voll in meinen Post-Gaze geschmack, den ich zur Zeit abfeiere. Ich war wirklich ganze Zeit richtig interessiert. - Man konnte die Platte zu keiner Sekunde vorhersehen - ich hing quasi an den Lippen des Albums - Insgesamt tolle Erfahrung 4/5
