Reviews (page 6 of 8)
Gnällig och jävligt släpig röst när han sjunger live. Plus för att detta är den berömda Judas!-konserten.
Listening session: juli 1st/2nd, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: heard a few songs before Thoughts: this album is just too long and after a while the harmonica and Bob Dylan’s singing are starting to be annoying Favourite tracks: Just Like a Woman & Ballad of a Thin Man
Dylan låter ovanligt irriterande här.
Dylan är ju bra, men livedubbelalbum? Pass.
More Bob Dylan mediocrity... but this one inclusion feels especially unnecessary. It is a fact that live albums inherently have less value.
This album should not be on this list. Dylan already has what feels like 50 entries, and all these tracks are already on the list in studio versions. Disc 1 is boring and droning, an while it does pick up on disc 2, it feels like it will never end.
to be completely frank, the only thing that told me when one song ended and another one started was when the audience started clapping. otherwise, the songs all kind of blended together for me, and i unfortunately was pretty bored all throughout. occasionally a melody would play that piqued my interest a little, but it never lasted through the whole song, and for me that became a trend for the entire album. that being said, like a rolling stone was pretty cool, it's just a bit of a shame it came at the very end.
That harmonica needs a restraining order, but otherwise pleasant, if a bit homogenous and boring.
This is so bad. The harmonica is jarring and the live show just illustrates even more that he can’t sing. The second half is much better than the first. Funny that the crowd booed that half lol.
Це лише другий мій альбом Боба Ділана в цьому списку, але він мені уже набрид
I don't even mind his singing voice. I even think it's quite good, but Bob gotta be one of the worst harmonica players ever, I'm sorry. Anyways, this isn't exactly Highway 61.. it's very dull.
Bob Dylan and his Harmonica are good. Not my thing though. Voice is definitely unique and a bit funny. Don't care for Live albums tbh. Tell Me, Momma was good. Later half of the album with The Hawks was better than Bob on his own. More to listen to/for I guess.
Soll die Wäscheklammer von der Nase nehmen und die Mundharmonika nicht vergewaltigen
too consistently melancholy for me think it was affecting my mood , he’s talented but this wasn’t for me
Ugh I don’t like bob dylan I’m SORRY
lo siento gabi pero esto es un santisimo coñazo, demasiado chill. Se ve que tiene skills con la armonica pero madre mia
The first disc was dull, the second perked up a little bit but overall wasn’t just way too long.
The first album is brutal. Absolutely brutal. It feels like an experiment to see how long people will sit and pretend something is great before admitting it is actually a total farce. The second album is fine - nothing extraordinary, but at least it’s music.
too much bob dylan. vocals more grating than ever.
I like Bob Dylan, I did not like this album
Don't need a live album of what's already on this bad boy
Nutteloze toevoeging aan de lijst, wekt ernstig veel irritatie op
Sure I guess, not sure we need this would rather just listen to the studio albums
This is the 6th album (so far) of Dylan encountered on this journey. Do we really need that many? Of course not. As a poet/lyricist Bob will always rate top tier. But as a vocalist? Good god. Not good. And for God’s sake, put down the dadgum harmonica. Used here and there to serve the song, the harmonica can be a nice touch. But harmonica noodling is never good. I can appreciate the split personality design here with solo acoustic vs full band electric. But this was a slog to get through.
Man, the first 4 or 5 songs sound exactly the same. His voice is rough to take in big doses on this and the harmonica was waaaaay too much. I kind of liked the full band and was going to round up for Like a Rolling Stone. But then I listened to the original and it was so much better. 2.25
Not for me.
Listened in the car and at home. Chat I think I don't really like Bob Dylan after all. This album had a lot going against it for me: it's a live album, it's longer than an hour, an unenthusiastic crowd, and Bob sounds like he's got a cold or something. I liked the second half a lot more than the first but even then it just wasn't doing it for me. Sad to rate it this low.
perdon, no me gusta la vibra de bob dylan, se me hace dificil escucharlo aunque se qeu es un gran artista
So I chose to look up what made this live album so important to include in the list. Having read up on the circumstances surrounding this album, it doesn’t deserve to be on here at all. For anyone who naysays and claims this is a vital album for the point when Bob Dylan’s style changed by going electric, this album showcases none of that. The sets are separate, they edited out the heckling and jeering in the second set. This album is just a congratulatory back pat for anyone who wants to act superior toward someone who doesn’t like Bob Dylan. On top of that, the music is just bland. I still think Dylan’s lyricism is extremely basic especially in the realm of rhyming, and an hour of him with guitar and harmonica playing other songs with studio versions is just not interesting. The full band is an adequate blues rock group, but nothing about them really shines. This is just an album for people who like to say “you just don’t get it” or “you had to be there”. I don’t get it, I wasn’t there, and it doesn’t need to be heard on this list.
Я розумію історичну цінність цього концертника, але мені слухати було дуже нудно, особливо першу частину. Не люблю тембр Ділана та його манеру співу, але коли все це з бендом, то ще якось норм. Тому 2.5.
Oh no... not a live album, by Bob Dylan, on a Monday, with a 1h 30min runtime, the day after daylight savings time change. It's just too much! The first half almost felt like a studio version Best Of version. The second half was less acoustic and consequently a fair bit messier. Not necessarily in a good way. While not as intolerable as I feared at first, I frankly don't know why this album is on this list. I don't feel like the live performance factor adds that much here. And we've probably had all songs on this album covered on other Dylan albums on the list anyways, so it just becomes a repeat. In the end I just don't like Dylan, so it's impossible for me to be objective reviewing this.
I could’ve gone my entire life without hearing this and been perfectly content. It’s not a great album, and I honestly struggled to get through the first disc. The second disc is better, but not enough to really save the overall experience.
2.1/5 I've always liked Dylan in small amounts but this was a slog. I understand that around this time, Bob Dylan would change music forever with his songs but listening to it 50 years later it doesn't do much for me. The first disc being the acoustic part really wore me down. I honestly couldn't tell you where one song ended and the next begun as it all blended together. Look, I like Bob Dylan and will still listen to his music but this live album really didn't work for me.
disc 1 was a drag, but i didn't mind disc 2 as much as i thought i would. the band was great at bringing energy to the show, as well as dylan himself, he sounded way more excited and energetic when singing with a full band backing him up. the "electric" rock sound suits bob dylan more than his more regular acoustic folksy blues sound.
Bob Dylan has moments of greatness when I think I'm getting into it, then he always does something to ruin it. I just cannot stand his music Favorite Songs: Visions of Johanna
2.4 I think if I didn't fall in love with the Freewheelin as a teenager I'd really dislike Bob Dylan. Reading the plaudits for this album I just don't get it... The first half he sounds like a caricature of himself, just a rambling man. The second half, putting aside the unsurprisingly bad audio quality of a 1966 live recording, it's just pretty bland. One of my fave Dylan songs, One Too Many Mornings is just casually butchered towards the end. Not my cup of tea, even though it really should be.
I've come to appreciate Bob Dylan as the genius songwriter he is more than I used to. But having seen him live I can attest that that genius does not extend to his abilities as a performer and this album reiterated that.
Classic songs if that’s your vibe. Not a big Dylan fan.
He does look like Timmy c but music isn’t for me. Incomprehensible and monotonous
Первые две трети унылые, голос Боба раздражает. В конце дал драйва, но это не спасло. Не хочу слышать это вновь. Не еденица потому, что это не ужасно, просто скучно.
My first Bob Dylan record and it's a 90 minutes live album :). I've always wanted to get into him, just never did it. Guess this is a good way to start. Man people were not joking with how bad he sings, I was aware from the few Dylan songs I'd heard, but this was legitimately the first thing I thought about, why does he sound like that. Nice harmonica I guess. Yeah the opener was not the best first impression ever. But I'm gonna stay positive! I have to, considering I have an hour and a half of this ahead of me. Is Bob Dylan going to sound constipated for the whole album? I kinda like the storytelling, but the vocal performance is painful, and I'm usually not a big vocals kind of guy. Is this whole thing just going to be a series of stories badly sung with a couple harmonica moments here and there? I haven't been loving these lyrics, which is weird, 'cause if the vocals are bad and the instrumentals are simple, what am I supposed to like here? Hey, an 11 minute song. 11 minutes of this man whailing. This should be fun. Look, I can appreciate the lyrics in this case, but I really just cannot get over his voice. It's not even just that he's a bad singer, his tone is bad too. Every verse sounds like he's on the verge of death, trying as hard as he can to get that sentence out. This might be the first time I don't enjoy a single second of an album. At least in other past bad experiences there was a moment here or there where I saw something good. In this album the only good parts are when he brings out the harmonica, and that's mostly because at least I don't have to hear his voice at that point. I'm enjoying a song! Just Like a Woman! Despite the weird lyrics! But it is genuinely comical how predictable the usage of the harmonica (I've written this word so many times already) is. But hey, I don't mind it too much here. Aaaaand we're back to mediocrity. I can't believe I'm only halfway through this.... Having said that Mr. Tambourine Man is my second favourite so far :) First side's done! My god. If this website had a chat feature I'd be asking people what other, better, songs they thought of when listening to this to help pass the time. I can forgive a lot of things in music. Bad singing, bad playing, whatever, as longs as there is something else there gripping me. Listening to this album, I'm realizing that not much in it particularly connects with me. Maybe this is not the best way to interact with Bob Dylan's music. Maybe I should give these songs a chance outside of their live performances. Maybe I need some more foundation with Dylan as an artist before listening to this. But as of now, not much of this left a (good) strong impression in me. Man, this was disappointing, and a waste of time. Call it a classic, a timeless masterpiece, whatever, I've read of torture methods that seem more fun than this. If this is the "real folk" people always talk about, then I just don't like it. Ok, I said all that and then suddenly the second half starts off much better... There's some difference in instrumentals!! And, maybe even better, since the sound quality isn't the best, the new instruments on stage kind of drown out the vocals, so Bob Dylan's voice isn't tormenting me as much now! And just like that I have some hope for the next hour of my life :) i Don't Believe You is also fun, but I keep expecting the chorus to go into "like a rollingggg stoooooooooone". But yeah, good. Really like the harmonica here. The song goes on for way too long though. Next track keeps the energy going but in a more concise manner. Like it. Don't have much to say about the next few songs. None of them are bad, and there are multiple good moments, but it mostly just went by for me. We're finally at the end, and it's Like a Rolling Stone! i like this song, and the performance is good (even if not as good as the original). Was my long paragraph at the end of the first half short-sighted? Yes. Was it honest to how I was feeling at the time? Also yes. Did the album get marginally better in the second half? Again, yes. This album has a big range of quality. Some parts are genuinely a struggle to get through, and some others are incredibly fun. However, the second half really does not make up for how awful the first half is. Sooooo, yeah. Bye
No puedo conectar con su música:(
I do not get bob Dylan anymore, and if I do, it’s def not this album. There are a few and far between tracks which aren’t too bad but this album slogs through for the bulk majority of the run of the album. Dylan is talented yeah I can see that. I also don’t like his voice at all in this live album. I listened to this at work and I’d of preferred to listen to the crappy instore radio they have
This album sounds like he had a cold, and because of that, he tried to make us forget about it with a harmonica.
During these 90 minutes of Bob Dylan's voice, I entered a reality where I never want to hear his voice again as it has started to cause me physical pain and mental anguish.
he’s so fucking annoying and making all of his songs ten minutes long makes them significantly worse
Dosadni ste više. 2/5, 3/10
Eh
Well, I clearly don't like the style of Bob Dylan.. tho this album is ok.. I guess 2/5
It's alright and I guess if you like this type of poetry singing then he is probably the best. I just don't care much for his voice or the style of music. It's okay and I suppose I wouldn't dislike it if someone put it on but it's not for me.
Grating harmonica and poor singing voice really hampered an otherwise interesting album.
I don’t really like live albums and I’ve been forced to listen to like 30 Dylan albums at this point, so I really didn’t like it at first. It got better when the full band came in.
He sings like he has a mouthful of mush. I'm just not a big fan. I usually prefer others singing his songs as I don't like his voice or the fact he doesn't enunciate. I do think he is a talented song writer. I get that the harmonica is one of his instruments, but I could do with a less harmonica as it is an instrument which sets my back teeth on edge. I don't care for live albums. Why do the songs need to be so long? Really, who needs a 11:32 rendition of "Desolation Row"? Yes, I understand that this was a concert and that when one is there, a person might get into the groove and actually enjoy the drawing out of the songs, which is one, among many, of the reasons I don't like live albums.
This was interesting to hear early vs old Bob Dylan or folk vs. rock. The second album was better and had more energy, but honestly that was the biggest thing that I enjoyed. Otherwise it didn't really give me anything new or different from Bob. I liked the harmonica but other than that it sort of slogged through, and the live aspect didn't really add much. What was happing with Like a Rolling Stone...was drunk, just being obnoxious, or like did he really think that it sounded good. It was so off beat by the end that it was painful. Sorry Bob, I like you but this was just too much
Musicians typically amp up their energy when they play live. I love live music for this reason. But Bob amped up is just too much. His vocals feel over the top, and I already don’t love his voice to begin with. My favorite parts of this performance were when the band was jamming without him singing, but those moments were sparse. I don’t think I would enjoy going to one of his shows.
I do not understand why this is on here. But I like the harmonics
Sorry Bob. Still not a fan.
just not a fan of bob dyylan
Bob Dylan was never someone I loved before this least, and a couple of his albums in, I was really starting to change my opinion on him. After listening to this album, where he sounds like an absolute caricature of himself, I’m back to thinking the high school version of myself who couldn’t stop ripping on this guy was on to something. This is a really tough one for Bob.
Didn’t even listen to the whole thing his voice sucks
mmmm harmonica
They really let this guy have a career? I guess things were dire back then...
You really have to be in the right mood for this. An hour and a half of the same song. This is a struggle to get through
2.0
It’s just too long for something I don’t care for
Näää…
(2.5) I understand why this is in the list as a piece of musical history, but I don't think it serves for much more than a one-time listen for novelty's sake.
I’m sort of a fan of a Bob Dylan in a casual, on the sidelines, greatest hits sort of a way. This was pretty terrible. He really can’t sing. Desolation Row was good. That’s the only reason it’s not 1 star
Maso
A poet who has written some classic songs. But not a good performer. The first half with just Bob with his guitar and harmonica was painful. I guess I just don't get him.
I'm scoring this low not because of Dylan's music but because the sound quality is shit, yes I understand it's from a bootleg etc but there's parts where all you hear is Bob's nasalness or screeching harmonica. This concert is also apparently a big deal because of the crowd reaction to him "going electric" but the crowd reaction seems edited out
One of the most famous moments in music history so I understand why it’s on here. I’m surprised so many reviewers seem to have no idea about the historical significance of it but honestly I can’t blame them as they basically neutered the concert without the heckling. Why would you edit out the portion that made the concert so famous? That is literally the worst decision possible. In terms of the music itself, Bob really does sound bored in the acoustic set. The Band comes in and are always a joy to listen to but it’s still not enough to make this a quality live album with the heckling removed. Is a cleaned up version of Metallic KO next? Rating: 2.0
Too nasal
For me this is the time Dylan really leaned into ‘the voice’ which led to it being the foundation of every parody since. It’s not as enjoyable as the album versions of tunes that came before.
This is not the famous album where an audience member shouted judas st dylan for going electric. Shame really as that would have injected a bit of excitement into proceedings. On record with a good producer dylan can be coralled into excellent work. This though is just some of his best songs performed at a mute level almost. Good live albums are about as rare as rocking horse droppings. This is not one of them.
4 stars if literally anyone else was singing
how does it feeeeeeeel
I understand why this album is in the list from the historical standpoint. I just didn't feel like it's something that has to be heard before you die. All in all it was OK and I did not hate it.
Not a Dylan fan
This wasn't as torturous as I was expecting. I didn't enjoy it, but for how much I haven't jived with Dylan's albums so far this one was fine. Probably elevated by a stricter song selection and decent live production.
Too long. I’m not a fan of live albums, but he sounded pretty much the same live as he does on regular albums. I knew Like a Rolling Stone and Mr. Tambourine Man.
bob ily but youre dreadful live
Didn’t get to finish… lowkey not my vibe
I realize Bob is a National Treasure, but sadly this album really didn't have many hits on it. Kinda all sounded the same.
I don’t hate Dylan, but I think you’d have be a super-fan to enjoy this. I don’t know why it’s on the list. Originally a bootleg recording and it probably should have stayed that way. To me, this mostly shows off all the _worst_ things about Dylan. He sounds like Mr Burns, his guitar strumming lacks timing and his harmonica tooting sounds like a child with a toy. The whole thing improves slightly in the second half when the band comes in. I feel like two is a little harsh, but three would be way too generous.
Ha ha this is what I get for telling someone "I like The Mekons more than Bob Dylan" yesterday. What can I say, everything by him has always sounded kind of samey to me, and then he takes out the harmonica, etc etc. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed the first couple tracks on this record, acoustic things that I wasn't very familiar with. But it stopped being fun around the halfway point, with a number of tracks like "Mr. Tambourine Man" that I've already heard enough times for an entire lifetime. There was also the issue that somebody in the Youtube comments brought up, that the mixing wasn't great on the electric songs so the singing was obscured by the music, fairly average blues-rock stuff. tldr: while the first half of the record had me thinking "this is more interesting than I thought it was going to be, I'm going to give it three stars," by the midpoint it started dragging and ends with a two. Not entirely Bob's fault, but he's got a Nobel so he probably won't mind this too much.
singer/songwriter, 1966 -> 2
I'm not sold on Bob Dylan live. His voice really isn't good on this one. It's so strained and drawn-out and 'off'. It can't be overstated, it really is woeful. And SO many of the songs feel really drawn-out and samey. It's hard to see the distinction in them when it's the same warbly vocals stretching out over the song, and with that constant harmonica shoving itself up into everyone's business. Bob, kindly, why don't you shove your harmonica up your fucking arse instead? Then next time you're going for a shit you can experience what we all have to. ...ok, the second half is much better I'm pleased to say, and with less focus on his voice alone it's a much, much better listen. The instruments are vibrant, the tone is upbeat, and the songs themselves just come completely alive. Still, I'll never get that 45 minutes back again from the first half. 2.5 rounded down.
As much as I try I can't like this dude. So annoying. But objectively nice songwriting and decent music overall
The first 20 min: Wow, Bob can really rock that harmonica. Next 20 minutes: Ok, I get it. Next 40 minutes: OK I FUCKING GET IT!
it was too long and certainly not one of his best.
DNF
Oh look it's Bob Dylan... ZZZzzzzzz
His voice works so much better with more instrumentation than one guitar and it 100% messes with the first half's enjoyability. Judas!
Dylan sticks with his acoustic guitar 'n' harmonica for the first half of this live album - sonically, it has a real "you are there" quality but otherwise it's a long monochromatic stretch of songs with similar chords and melodies, differentiated only by the lyrics. Second half of this record sees Dylan plug in his Telecaster and bring out his backing band for some electrified rawk 'n' roll. The increase in energy is welcome (even if caused some grousing among certain audience members) but the songs aren't much better than those on the first half. Dylan relies on a lot of blues-based chord progressions for these tracks (e.g. on "Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat") to which the band applies the same basic arrangement to each time, resulting in a lot of same-sounding songs. Only "Ballad Of A Thin Man" and "Like A Rolling Stone" distinguish themselves (especially with Dylan's spirited performance on the latter), but 95 minutes is a long way to go to get to those gems.
1.5 I don’t like Dylan’s distinct & nasally style of singing. Never have. His music in general is overrated and boring to me, which is unfortunate because I’m going to assume the editors on this list slurp up Bob Dylan and put many of his albums on here. Also, a double album at 90 minutes of him live is ridiculous and calling it a chore to listen to is an understatement. Even though I’m not a Bob Dylan fan, I can understand why he has multiple albums on this list; I just don’t know why this is one of them. 1.5 rounded up to a 2 because I’m nice.
It's difficult for me to tate Dylan's music since I don't know enough about the historical context of his songs. Having read a bit about this recording, I think you can definitely tell the shift in tone between the acoustic parts and the electric parts, but I can't tell if it's necessarily for the "better" or if I find the added instruments more interesting. Ultimately it's more of a historical album, and I can respect that. Not a big fan of Dylan as a vocalist though, and I had to hold myself back from laughing while listening to She Belongs to Me.
A Dylan Live bootleg is certainly a choice. 2/5
Every day I approach every album with an open mind cause there have been many artists so far where I haven’t liked one album but loved another. That being said when this popped up all I could say was bollocks, I hate Bob Dylan. I hated my previous two albums of his. I HATED disc one of this album. Disc 2 on the other hand was quite good surprisingly. I’m not gonna rush to listen to it again or anything but it was enjoyable enough. Top Track - Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues
Listening w my son on our way to work he commented "I could do without the harmonica, maybe it would be better if it wasn't live"
An amazingly gifted songwriter (obvious statement), but the first half of this record lays bare the limited vocals and the inflection Bob puts on the end of each line gets grating by the fourth or fifth song. Unlike the audiences of the time, I was quite relieved when he had the backing of a full band in the second half but unfortunately I thought the actual songs selection was weaker than the first. Never satisfied, eh? Like most Bob Dylan, I can find enjoyment in a few songs at a time, but not a live double-album. 2.5
Nope overrated
Just can’t get into live albums
Brief report as I had a switch up on the assigned album last minute.
Live 1966 will be my seventh and final Bob Dylan album to review. I like Bob Dylan in small doses, so 90 minutes of live material from him isn't something I'm incredibly excited to listen to. I do see that some of my favorite songs of his are on here though, and I'm really curious to see how these live versions will sound. Live 1966 was pretty underwhelming to me. The first half of this album was nice, and I enjoyed the intimate sound of just Bob Dylan performing with a guitar and a harmonica. But speaking of that harmonica, it felt really loud to me in the mixing of this album. On top of that, Dylan's vocals sounded really mumbly, almost as if he had something in his mouth. As much as I enjoyed the intimacy of this part of the album, I didn't think the live versions of these songs really did much for them. "Mr. Tambourine Man" is one of my favorite songs of Dylan's, but do I want to listen to a nine minute version of it that's mostly him wailing the same sequence of notes on the harmonica over and over again? No, I do not. The second part of this album sounded really poorly mixed, and there was a really tinny quality to the audio that drove me nuts. Again, I don't think these songs were done any particular service from these live versions. "Like a Rolling Stone" is one of my favorite songs of Dylan's, and this version didn't sound particularly good. I really love the studio version of this song, mostly because of the sense of wandering that it creates in its sound, and that felt totally stripped away on this version. This album had a few nice moments, but I was mostly pretty bored by it. It's a shame that this had to be my last album of Dylan's to review.
Only my second album from this dude but I already know there is plenty of him and this one should be cut. That harmonica is harder to listen to than Xiu Xiu or Throbbing Gristle.
As a historical document I can see why this was included. Dylan.going electric and being heckled by his crowd is a turning point in modern music. But as an album, this really isn't good. The solo acoustic versions are fairly ok, but the levels are awful - his harmonica is ear piercing in places, and while I love some of the songs his vocal sounds like a bad parody of himself. While the live band performances have an enjoyable roughness, I can't say they're significantly better than the studio versions. And the biggest crime? At least on Tidal, the between-song sections are missing, which means you don't hear the heckles and responses - the whole thing that makes it historically important! A missed opportunity. 2*, purely because some of the songs are undeniable classics.
Good, but at the end of the day it's a standard performance with an average sound recording. Although I will say the bootleg aspect of this is cool.
Jag vet att folk älskar Dylan men jag blir bara uttråkad. Alla låtar låter i princip likadant och jag bryr mig inte om texterna speciellt mycket
Sorry. He is probably one of the greatest song writers of his era. This album contains great tracks from start to finish but a live recording emphasises the man just cannot sing
This is very close to a 1 star. The 2nd half of this album saves it slightly. Don’t get me wrong, this album is absolutely horrific. Music should not make you angry but that’s the affect his nasal warbling and harmonica does to me.
Couldn't finish it. I dont think live albums should be on here. And dylan is such a rough live listen. Theres plenty of him on here already. What is this adding?
FAVO: Baby, let me follow you down, Leopard Skin Pill-box hat,
I rate it down just because it is a double-album and because it is a live album. As always with Bob Dylan a whole album becomes a bit boring.
Possibly a heretical opinion, but droning was the word that came to mind. 2.
Songs are way too fucking long….
Technical use of voice - wonderful. But personally, i cant get used to his manner of singing, irritates me profoundly, like scratching on blackboard. Same with occasional use of harmonica solos, which high pitch drives holes in my brain - not pleasant.
C'est sympa et ca s'écoute par intermittence mais bon dieu ces harmonica ils cassent tout la
Voy a decir algo positivo sobre éste album: eventualmente termina. Nota: 1.7
I am tired of getting Bob Dylan. I do not like his voice 90% of the time. This live didn't help his case. Bonus star because instrumentals are still decent and that last song is pretty good. But please. I'm so tired with this list's borderline obsession with the guy.
2.5/5
I like Dylan and the era, but this recording just doesn't grab me. Plodding pace and poor quality compared to other live albums on this list.
тяжело...остановилась на середине, очень уж режет слух
i love his songs but this sounds just like the album versions so i dont know what the live part adds to it and most of the songs seem to go on and on getting boring after a while
accidently deleted all my notes.... side a was absolute dog shit and 2/5 at best, just really annoying voice side b was alright and had some good stuff, i really like ballad of a thin man ( just a bit long) and like a rolling stone
Harmonica
Disc 1: When someone does a Bob Dylan impression with the over emphasized nasally delivery, they sound just like he does on this album. Its comical at points on here. Also, I'm not convinced he actually knows how to play the harmonica. Disc 2: Much more of the Dylan I actually enjoy. But to say this should be o the 1001 list is still a stretch.
Another live album. Sigh. So much harmonica. Too much harmonica. Sorry folkies. Dylan just doesn't do it for me.
Sorry Bob, only made it half way through. He's written some great songs, but I guess I have to be in the mood to listen. Today I wasn't.
maybe on vinyl it would sound great oh something, sucked on app
This album is why people make fun of him. I love some Bob Dylan stuff but this was just…. Evidence of all of the jokes people make about him
I feel like live albums only work if you already like the artist, and I don't really have much appreciation for Bob Dylan. I mean, I didn't die of boredom listening to this, so at least there's that. The first half is just him singing alone with an acoustic guitar and a harmonica. I guess this has charm for someone, but for me this is just boring. Bob Dylan is a great writer, but for me, instrumentation is far more important. And here, since it’s just one person and calm songs, it’s extremely monotonous and unsatisfying. Again, I understand why some people may like this, but this is just not for me. I listen to music for fun, and this is not fun. The second half of the album is an a lot more energetic folk rock gig, which is actually pretty fun. Though, apart from Like a Rolling Stone, I didn’t find any of the songs all that exciting. 5/10
Dear Lord, this is a lot of Dylan in one sitting. I like disc 2 better, as it distracts from his singing a bit. Even songs I normally like suck on this album. So glad it's over. 1.5* rounding up because I know he has talent. It's just not in the vocal arena.
If you love Bob, you'll love this. If you hate Bob, you'll hate this. I personally feel pretty neutral about Bob, it's my first album of his, and I feel pretty neutral about this album too. I generally liked disc2 better, but the whole experience was very neutral for me
Voice is hard to bear
Live 1966 (free live album pass) starts out a bit whiny and gets worse until he goes electric, which he had done a year earlier at the Newport Folk Festival. For me, the electric set was much more listenable than the acoustic portion - but still rough. I’m surprised the audience was dissatisfied about him going electric, it was an improvement. Best song is Leopard-Skin Pill-Box Hat, although last four songs are decent. (1.7*s) Glad I wasn’t at this concert.
What you have here is a live one with the 2 sides of Dylan. The 1st half solo acoustic set is not the version I prefer. Find that his singing is rather annoying. Songs sound the same and were boring. When the Hawks came out for the 2nd half, the whole concert picked up. The crowd must have been a bunch of old, stuffshirts to criticize the rock set. I much preferred it but I guess if you had a stick up your ass, Dylan was straying from the folk tunes you were so accustomed to. I like the dichotomy of this album but again, it's live so had to be there for true experience. 2.03 stars.
Just ehh
2.5 - Meh
There are probably a half dozen Dylan albums in my personal top 100, but I don’t think there’s a live album in the top 1000.
Bob Dylan has to be one of the most hilariously overrated musicians of all time. Anyone who ever covered his songs has done a better job. However, he is a good lyricist sometimes.
What a bore. Bob Dylan is monotonous at the best of times; there’s no need for an hour & a half of torturous live renditions of his songs.
I like live music but this was not something I enjoyed
Not big on live albums but its pretty solid considering how influential Bobby D was
I mean, I get it, but not for me
Woah ok Bob
That's genius - make one half on the album so bad and monotonous, that next to it, anything that has a minimal amount of energy and more instruments than just guitar and harmonica feels like a masterpiece. Well, I'm *not* falling for it.
I think it is fair to say you had to be there. This seems more notable for it's historical content than the actual listenabilty if the music. I like Dylan but I have to admit, I was a bit bored.
Still don't get Dylan. Lyrically fine, but his terrible delivery always grates and the harmonica seals the deal for.me, bloody awful. For what it's worth, electric was better.
Byaab Dilughn seen so wiyrd. I was listening to it thinking about all the covers I'd heard of each song, and preferred.
Still not growing on me. Should have been a songwriter and not the singer. How did this guy ever make it?
I find the harmonica V shrill. We do not gel.
Dylan is great in small amounts. 1.5 hours is just too much all at once.
First three tracks just sound like terrible versions of Bob Dylan songs. People make fun of his voice which I disagree with, but here outside of the studio its really not good. Just Like a Woman is the first fully enjoyable song. The electric stuff is easily the best sounding. Still Dylan and still decent just a pretty wide mix of good and bad music. Really love the drumming on Like a Rolling Stone at least
Music artists do not warrant a live album on here unless it is an exceptional or groundbreaking piece of work. Bob Dylan's record is neither exceptional nor groundbreaking.
This was mostly mating cats in a bagpipe recycling facility. The only bit of enjoyment I got from this was The Band. Still though, I didn't even finish the second disc. ⭐⭐
Great songwriter but man I get sick of his voice and harmonica
Fantastisk håndverk. Skulle bare ønske noen andre kunne synge sangene, og at munnspillet blei kasta i søpla før konserten. Beste låt: Like a Rolling Stone (Selv om denne versjonen var langt mer slitsom enn plateversjonen)
sort of fine playing quietly in the background
There is such a thing as too much Bob Dylan This is a 1.5 but I’m feeling generous
I’ve always suspected I wasn’t a Bob Dylan fan and this has confirmed it. Way too long, all the songs were muddling together and just not my vibe. Felt like I was forcing myself to listen to this for completeness of the listening challenge I’d set myself.
Actually kind of decent, Dylan hasn’t fallen to his lazy speech-singing style yet.
So does anyone know if he ever stopped holding in his sneeze?
I will never understand the hype of Dylan….
Too long Live Worse versions of great songs 2 and thats generous
I tried, but honestly I couldn't get into this one. To me it sounded like someone doing a Bob Dylan caricature with the enunciated inflections, drawn out harmonica bullshit, etc. While I can appreciate his vivid storytelling, I think it holds up best in a studio environment or draped in someone else's vocals. Second half is a bit more forgiving with the electric support, but by that point I was pretty worn of the experience. Only song I really remember is Fourth Time Around -- the rhyme scheme is kind of dumb at points, but the story is memorable at least. Not my jam -- 2 / 5.
None of this clicked for me. The guitar was perfectly good, but his voice is not good at all. It sounds like he's trying to speak in Gaelic or something. The harmonica is a bit heavy as well. Disc 1 had 1 star potential. Second half saved it. I still don't "get" Bob Dylan
I just can’t deal with all the goddamned harmonica.
I do not like live albums and I am not fond of Bob Dylan.
Ittno for mej
Oh boy, this was a slog. I'm not a Bob Dylan hater, but 1.5 hours straight of his voice got to me a little. It's not horrible, but it's not a good sign when you're just waiting for an album to end so you can listen to something else haha. Standouts: N/A Rating: 2.25/5
He talks like a south park character and the guitar strumming is the same in every single track I don't not see the appeal
Folk energy, but not my kind of music.
I thought this album was gunna be super grating and insufferable like the first several tracks, but then I was surprised with a band! I do think I like Dylan the most when there is a band supporting him. Those tracks where it is just him I find to be the most challenging to me. That being said there was a couple tracks in this album I saved, but I honestly have no idea what this album is doing on this list. It was like an ok greatest hits album.
Disc 1 just felt like the same song over & over. Disc 2 a bit more lively. Idk, this live album feels like a cheap inclusion.
Meh
Live albums should not be on this list
I feel like the entirety of Bob Dylan fandom is a psy-op. I hear the consensus that he's an incredible writer and lyricist but I don't feel that many of these songs stand out. I don't enjoy his voice or music. I can't understand how folks can laud him so lavishly when someone like, say, a Paul Simon exists contemporarily? Heck, I'm sure Simon like Dylan. I just can't glom onto the thing that makes him enjoyable.
Never really understood the hype or mystique behind Bob dylan, an album one only reinforces that. The acoustic set is a challenge to get through with every song sounding the same, not to mention the absolutely horrendous vocals in Bob's assault on a harmonica. The second album is a little bit more enjoyable when the rest of the band comes into play, but unfortunately it's not enough to redeem the terrible first half
Apart from the lyricism I don’t get the appeal. He sure has a distinct style of voice but god 90 minutes is tedious
Well, here we are again. Another Dylan album, can't understand why. Oh yes this one was live. Did it make any difference? No. It was just another Dylan album, a little longer than any other, but no better. It just reaffirms that he's a wannabe Roy Harper. Who is still conspicuous by his absence. Looking back through all the albums that I have reviewed it would appear that apart from the bands you simply cannot ignore, the Beatles, the Stones, Fleetwood Mac, the Who etc British music did not exist in the 20th century. Anyway, to the job in hand. Yet another Dylan album nothing special 2.
Thank the Lord for the 2nd LP. I nearly gave up before I got there, as the 1st LP was just a monotonous moan-fest interspersed with a shite harmonica solo here and there. At least the 2nd LP was lifted by the band joining in. Almost made it listenable, although Bob’s horrendous vocal still spoilt the whole thing. The lowest of low 1 stars for LP1. 2 stars for LP2. Generously rounded up for the rousing version of ‘Like A Rolling Stone’ to finish.
Dylan's voice and way of singing are still my biggest issues with him. Whether it's the acoustic solo version or the electric with the band doesn't matter. It's still bad.
Second half was better than the first
Not doing much to change my opinion of Dylan. Still can't deal with his voice, and some of the songs on this one are much more poorly written than what I've heard from him before. This is the beginning of the "Dylan Goes Electric" thing, so I get the importance of the recording, but damn it's a tough listen for me. Dreading the (I'm sure) many more Dylan albums on this list.
Não consigo gostar de Bob Dylan. Continuo a achá-lo demasiado pretencioso.
If this list has done anything, its proven to me that I do not like Bob Dylan.
OK, totally spoilt by Bob's lack of singing ability
Not my cup of tea. It gets better on the 2nd disc tho.
Loved Dylan’s lyrics in this one. Hated just about everything else.
Kjedelig..
Saw Bob Dylan live. Kinda same vibes as this plain boring live album.
Mumbles and his harmonica, not doing it for me.
2 sterne
I liked the second half more than the first half, when he plugged in and started to rock a little more. Crazy that this wasn't looked upon fondly at the time. I didn't find the recording to be very good, which was distracting. Some good songs but really hard to listen to this. My least favorite Dylan album we listened to, not because of the content, but just because I didn't like the recording at all.
Listened through early and despite the length I had a decent time with it. But here in the evening re-listening to some tracks to pick one for my 1001 playlist, it sounds much worse. Never loved Dylan much, his voice is just so whiny it leaves me to feel he’s sadly much overrated. 2.5/5 but going to rate down as this seems more a glorified greatest hits under the guise of being a “live” album
FLAG ON THE PLAY. Is this album allowed on this list for it being a live version? I think the only reason why this "album" is on here is because of the cultural impact that Bob Dylan had when he transitioned out of folk music and into electric music (music with electric instruments). I don't think this is fair, but I'll give it a review nonetheless, but will be deducting points. The folky half of the album is good minus the occasional piercing harmonica. I enjoy the composition of it, but because it's a live production in the 60s, the quality isn't where it could be. My main takeaway is "these are a good collection of folky songs". The second half of the album is cool too, but it comprised of a number of songs on his prerecorded albums. Again, I like the songwriting, and I can tolerate his voice, but I'm deducting points for the Bob Dylan glazing that's obviously occurring.
I enjoyed the harmonica.
I guess the best songs, but still not sold on dylan
Fourth of seven Dylan albums on this list. This is one of the two that probably shouldn't be on this list. It's here because of the legend and myth surrounding the performance, but I feel like there is an over representation of Dylan and the mystique of this album shouldn't be the major qualifier for it's inclusion.
# 454 : 09/04/2025 : I don't love it, I don't hate it. I thought it was very ordinary, quite long and rather forgettable. For a live recording it wasn't that energetic and Jesus Christ, Bob. Give that harmonica a break, not something I want to hear for 1.5 hours!
Honestly no more enjoyable than an open mic night at my local
2,5
His singing style is so goofy, I laughed out loud a couple of times during this album. Still enjoyed some of the songs, but surprisingly not mr tambourine man, even though it’s my favourite of his - didn’t like this version of it at all
Why is this here? I tend to enjoy Dylan but this list has way too much live shit on it. The first half is far from his best performance. I much prefer an actual album to be made on the list over this. If a live album must be included, at least make it look significant, not this. 3/10 only because it's still Dylan, so I still like the music.
60% Best: Tell Me, Momma; Just Like Tom Thumb’s Blues Must-Hear? I wouldn’t wish the first disc/set against my worst enemy. However, the 2nd disc/set is actually pretty decent, in no small part to the Band.
Not a bad recording by any means but I guess I just don't care for live albums all that much.
Por que? No tenemos suficiente de Dylan ya?
Liveeeeeee
I would be surprised a bootlegged album is in this generator, but since the world has a crush on Bob Dylan, I'm not surprised. The album needed less Harmonica(and more Cowbell). It's a shame this was my 100th Rock Album in this generator.
2 stars. I don't like his voice and I hated the acoustic set half. I felt like I was losing my mind when people talked about loving him and his lyrics bc I couldn't get over how much I hated his voice in this. Then the band kicked in and it was p good.
Puedo entender (intento) que aportó a la música pero no puedo tolerar su voz, sorry.
Live albums are generally meh and I cannot stand Bob Dylan's voice. Love his lyrics so this pains me.
uggggghhh live albums. whyyyyy. I do not like you, Bob Dylan.
Jesus Christ. Is someone punking me? Is there a camera hidden behind this potted plant? This is torture. Please. I'll tell you anything you want to know.
It’s certainly mostly listenable
Høfligt nej tak til det her livealbum. Første halvdel var ok men anden halvdel lød virkelig dårligt optaget.
He's doesn't half drone on at times.
This made me sick with rage. I hate harmonicas
Put the harmonica away bob
Having seen Bob Dylan live I'd rather just listen to the studio albums
Pre: As always with many of these Dylan's an artist I've been meaning to listen to more of. I've mostly been a fan of what I've listened to at least. I've never been a huge fan of his singing though except for a few exceptions so we'll see if my opinions have changed. Post: Kind of insane to think of any way to judge it because it was 1966. I don't think the album stands up on its own nowadays really, but it is interesting as a piece of music history. It's funny how a lot of Dylan's music is timeless except this one highlight which is such a specific moment to capture. Maybe I would be one of those crazy booing people after all! Truth betold I'm not a huge fan of Electric Dylan, hell I can't stand Like a Rolling Stone, so this isn't much of a surprise. Maybe I would be one of those crazy booing people after all! I did go see A Complete Unknown yesterday though in fortuitous timing. Since then, and because of this album, I have been listening to more and more Dylan so maybe I'll come back to this album in a bit with a different view. No doubt my thoughts will vary heavily listen to listen and day to day, such is the obvious result of the album a day review. Highlight: Mr Tambourine Man
1. belongz - 1.5 2. time - 1.5 3. johanna - 2 4. baby - 2 5. dezolation - 1 6. uuoman - 2 7. tambourine - 1.5 8. momma - 1 9. believe - 1.5 10. follouu - 1 11. thumbz - 1.5 12. leopard - 1.5 13. morning - 1.5 14. thin - 2 15. rolling ztone - 2
That first disc was tough to get through, and by itself I would've given it a 1. The second disc was more upbeat with a little less harmonica and more guitar.
Another boring Bob Dylan record from this project. My third one so far? How many Bob Dylan records are on here? Why is every single one a 2/5 for me?
Didn't finish it. I like Dylan, but not enough to listen to an hour and a half concert. I don't think concerts have their place on this list, really. Unless it it is really exceptional (this wasn't it)
Too long
I like Dylan, but didn't care for this live album.
I want to like Dylan but I do not like Dylan
Songs are great, still can’t abide his singing.
Kakkososuus oli jepa
Big meh
There’s the Bob Dylan I know. Not for me. It was pretty boring and sounded all the same. Did not like his vocals on this album at all. DNF.
Disc 1 - I am not a massive fan of his voice and the songs can be a bit samey, he also really needs to use that harmonica less. Disc 2 - Much better and a lot more energetic, however the harmonica is still there in some songs. Overall I prefer disc 2 over disc 1.
Veers a bit too much in to quite annoying noise too often for me.
The fucking harmonica 🙉
Oh my! I know that this man is put right up there by some people but the voice and all the harmonica is just too much for me. That being said thought the 2nd half was better than the first as the instruments masked his voice a bit and the harmonica was not as prominent.
I am generally anti Bob Dylan singing. 2 stars because the guy knew how to write a song
Dylan is mid
I don’t dislike Bob Dylan but this felt superfluous and the live element didn’t add anything for me
The musical content is just okay, but as a performer he's terrible.
Five albums heard of the seven (7) Bob Dylan’s included in this…liking him less and less
Låter ungefär som en Bruno K. Öijer som skitit på sig.
I do not like bob dylan. harmonica is not a good instrument
Ok, I know he's an amazing composer and all, but I really don't think he deserves that many spots on this list. He already has many albums on it, the last thing this list needed was a live record from him as well. Also, almost all the covers of his songs are better than the originals.
At first i thought : 1H and 30 minutes of Bob Dylan ? Please stop i'm not 60. And i was a right, fuck that harmonica. I was right until the ending with Ballad of a Thin Man and Like A rolling stone, (we can see how it influences hendrix). That ending was incredible. So it's two incredible songs vs a boring live album, i'll be nice and give 2 stars
I like a bit of Bob, this is just very odd juxtaposition - accounts into electric - and bobs voice is not the best on this recording…..
Really can't stand Dylan's vocal. I'd rather listen to The Byrds singing his songs and Milltown Brothers do a great version of "It's All Over Now, Baby Blue" Disc 2 with the band is a hell of a lot better though so an extra star for that.
I just can’t get into Bob Dylan - as a songwriter he’s one of the best ever but as a singer he sounds like a drunk in a pub karaoke.
I really love Bob but I don't feel this deserves to be here.
Dreadfully dull, can't sing, zero personality, and yet, I still prefer myself to Bob Dylan.
Bad album.
Side one the harmonica was painful and there was an unnecessary amount of jamming at the end of some of the tracks. Side two was significantly better
More of the same feeling as from Highway 61, except in Live form. Some of the songs felt so dragged out and lacked a bit of solid rhythm that would really elevate them. I can see Dylan’s influence on songwriting and guitaring but his contemporaries (Beatles etc) elevated his style by converting it into fully fledged songs with more enjoyable and rewarding structures for the listener.
I don’t like live albums. Harmonica was ear-piercing and too much of it. Annoying singing. Rudimentary, uninspiring guitar. Lyrics are good but not good enough to carry this ‘album’ for 90 minutes. A few songs are solid, like Desolation Row and I Don’t Believe You. But those were not written for this album specifically, and so this album doesn’t deserve credit for them. Which begs the question - what does this album in isolation offer? The answer is simple - very little. I’m aware I’m harsh on live albums but I see nothing wrong with that. I’ve loved Oasis’s entire discography for years but how many times have I actually sat down and listened to Knebworth 1966 (Live)? Maaaaaybe once? Studio albums are where it’s at, for this list anyway. My criticism isn’t purely because it’s a live album though. That slow, wailing rendition of Like a Rolling Stone at the end was frankly annoying to listen to. Bleh. Sorry Bob, this doesn’t do it for me.
Here’s my problem, I just don’t like Bob Dylan. I know he’s supposed to be a brilliant songwriter, but I don’t enjoy listening to him.
I just can’t stand Bob Dylan. And fuck harmonicas for real. Not poorly performed or written, but poison to me.
I didn't enjoy this at all. Least hated song: mr. tambourine man.
Bruh 90 minutes of this dude I can't
I think the novelty of this album is lost on me. Without the story and the legacy attached to this event this is kind of a failure of a live album. I'd say historically I don't mind Bob Dylan, he's got a funny way of singing that is good for a laugh but I don't think I would change stations on the radio if he came on. I can see why people get annoying at the abundance of the harmonica but it never really bothered me. But this really is a piss poor excuse for a live album. I am sure they worked the best magic they could in 1998 to salvage a live recording from 1966 to some extent but the quality is mediocre at best and feels very flippant with what audio is received/how it is balanced. During the acoustic section in the first half his voice is captured at its clearest. But the guitar is much quieter, making it feel insignificant to the performance. Then the harmonica will come in and seemingly top out whatever microphone Bob is blowing it into. If this album is what has frozen a majority of listeners into suffering PTSD from his harmonica I honestly wouldn't blame you. Secondly, on how it feels like a failure of a live album. I don't think this is their best performances. Bob is fine during the first half, but the poor mixing of his guitar and the lack of any other performers other than him make this section feel like one long drag. The electric portion was better on average in my opinion. The addition of new elements sets the songs apart more and his band 'The Hawks' felt like they put a lot of energy into their performance. My biggest gripe with that half is the vocals, I don't know if it is the fault of the recording, or if Bob was exhausted or just pissed off (more on that in a moment) at this point in the show but he was a lot less intelligible in this half. During the final performance with 'Like a Rolling Stone' it almost felt like he was trolling the crowd with how he was dragging out the chorus. Lastly, for a live performance. There isn't really much that is showcased outside of the songs. You get a bit of the crowds reactions between songs in the acoustic section and the jump between songs on the album seems pretty seamless, which I am not sure if it is just an editing thing which this album clearly underwent. Or that the performers were just going through their songs like a shopping list so they could get out of there. That is until the electric section. Where the transition between songs is a lot more abrupt. You will get a small snippet of cheering at the end of a song, before a harsh cut into now crowd noise for their next song. That would be because these geniuses thought they could just carefully edit around the songs to try and hide the fact that the crowd for whatever reason turned against this concert during the electric portion. Reportedly, in the original audio there is a lot of booing and heckling between songs in the 2nd half. Were the audience misled into thinking they were just getting a traditional concert with just Bob? Was this protest against the more rock & roll focused 2nd half in contrast to his more folk music beginnings? Either way it is a bitch made thing to do, especially when trying to present this as a legacy recording of a live event. I was initially considering being more generous and giving this a 3 considering my enjoyment of the 2nd half, but them tampering with one of the live elements of the show (which should be half the justification for why the recording sounds the way it does n the first place) doesn't sit right with me. This also has me wondering how I will enjoy Bob Dylan albums further into this list. Because while I may like him here and there I could see his style getting on my nerves if I have to sit down and listen to it for upwards of an hour.
very, very boring. Some hits bring it up from a one star rating
Historically notable but practically unlistenable.
пока не научилась различать песни Боба Дилана. этот экспириенс пока не помог
Ei iske. Sattumalta joku coveroi tätä Helsingin juhlaviikoilla Huvila-teltassa ja luin tästä. Toka puoli on paljon parempi mut ei ehkä mun juttu sekään.
This is another category of live albums that "work" (other options are heavy improvisation, a simplistic style and great performance chops, and incorporating the live audience with the work). this one "works" because Dylan's voice and performance is just as bad live as in the studio. I want to like Dylan, his lyricism is legitimately great. When I can understand what he's saying. But he's not a good musician. He can't sing well, he's not a good guitarist. he's not even very good at writing music. I get why people like bob Dylan, but I have yet to find a work of his that I like as a piece of music.
This is too long
Bob Dylan’s vocals are like a roller coaster that isn’t fun. Otherwise his music would be great
Oof
Best Song: Like A Rolling Stone. I just like the song, even if this isn't the best rendition. Worst Song: Just Like A Woman. Absolutely hate the infantilizing nonsense of the lyrics here. "You make love like a woman, but you break just like a little girl"? Sure it's got this "Catcher in the Rye", "There's a bluebird in my heart..." kind of quality to it, and had the song been gender neutral I could have maybe accepted that, but the choice to specifically gender the lyrics brings in a bunch of weird baggage. Creepy. Overall: Oh he's real mumbly here. Every vocal phrase sounds like it starts with someone physically squeezing all the air out of him. The album also does not benefit from the live setting in any way. Not sure why someone would choose this form to listen to these tracks.
me and solo acoustic bob dylan do not vibe. second disc with the band was much more bearable
I have gone from a seminal album to an entire generation to a Bob Dylan bootleg album. This is the most Boomer thing ever to include a bootleg album that includes songs already included on albums in this book by Bob Dylan. There are already six other albums by Bob Dylan in this book, so it's not like this album has to be heard because it is by an artist who isn't sufficiently represented in this book. I like Bob Dylan! I like these songs! Many are already available on this list already and there is not anything here totally different from what is presented on Dylan's albums. It's really good and it's Dylan live. I can't figure out what is represented here that isn't already represented in this book, other than "Dylan live." If we are going to include official bootleg albums by artists then this needs to be a much longer list. Just can't get behind this one.
Live albums are cheating. They're just greatest hits most of the time. Except there actually aren't enough Dylan hits on this live album. It was, however, my first exposure to Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man," because we haven't listened to "Bringing it All Back Home" yet. Or "Highway 61 Revisited." Because we're on #995 but still have two more Dylan albums! Anyway, Dylan's "Mr. Tambourine Man" is terrible. Glad The Byrds' version is the one that got famous. Some of his most annoying enunciations. Maybe 1966 was peak overindulgent Dylan.
This is somehow both peak Dylan songwriting but also the peak of the spoken word poetry delivery that I hate. Two discs = too many = two stars.
Too much harmonica, there's a reason most albums don't have harmonica solos on every track.
I don’t like most live albums. This was no different. Live Dylan is not for me.
Oh this was intolerable. So much meandering harmonica
I like Dylan, but he is awful live
2 Stars. (5/15)
I appreciate and acknowledge the songwriting ability of Bob Dylan, but man I quickly lost interest here. Majority of the songs and performances sound way too similar to each other, especially in the first half. There just wasn't that much energy despite being a live recording. His signature, nasally delivery takes a lot of getting used to as well. The second half, while having a bit more energy, wasn't enough to save the overall album experience for me.
I like Bob Dylan, but ig I don't like this album
To this day, one of the worst concerts I have ever been to. Not this one but Dylan in general.
didn't really get into it. too much harmonica
Between the quality of his voice and they screeching of that harmonica I couldn't even listen to this to try to figure out why people like Bob Dylan
I am definitely not the biggest fan of his music, but I admit that he was visionary at times. I hardly understand any of his lyrics by listening, but reading them makes me even hold out his singing. And he wrote some great iconic songs Unfortunately, this record ist overshadowed byba mistuned acoustic guitar and a brain melt inducing terrible harmonica. The second disc does not provide enough relief from the first one then. But that is just taste, and therefore as a document of boldness I give it a two and will never again listen to it.
That was awful. It's utterly flat and lifeless.
I cannot understand choosing this over Desire, which in my opinion is Dylan’s best front to back record. When you compare that album to the quality of this recording it’s night and day. The only thing noteworthy about this record is that he got heckled for playing electric. I feel like every song is a subpar version compared to the album. This is no Allman Brothers Fillmore East or 4-Way Street, just a wasted pick.
I deeply respect Bob Dylan but man... some of his live stuff is hard to listen to
5/15/24. Enjoyable live album, but admittedly not a big Bob Dylan guy due to his vocals. I won't say he's a bad singer, just not a fan. The second half heavier set was also so-so.
2.5 It's fine but it's just not that interesting
Disc 1: I think we as a society gave Bob Dylan too much credit. We put him on this pedestal of music genius and lyrical God. I know he has some good material. This live album is just God awful. It's the cliche Dylan voice. With the unnecessary inflections. Every line sounds like a question. His Harp playing isn't good at all. In fact it's drawn out and takes away from the songs. I had an opportunity to see Dylan a few years back but declined as I'm not really a fan, but I contemplated because "it's Bob Dylan!" and because we, as a society, but him on top... I almost fell for it. I'm happy that I didn't go see him as I heard the show was disastrous. At that time, he was already a frail old man. Father time is a bitch. But hearing this live album from 1966 - one could argue this may be him in his prime - I wouldn't want this either. It's annoying. I hope he had in between song banter to shake up the stupid sound of his singing. His singing is so bad that you can't even really enjoy what he is saying. Dylan and an acoustic guitar is a combination I don't want to order. Disc 2: Having a full band behind Bob Dylan is a much needed saving grace. His voice is still annoying but the fullness of a band almost drowns that annoyance out. But in the same breath, they compliment one another when theyre rockin out. On the slower jams... I'm left with PTSD from Disc 1. Despite the 2nd disc sounding a lot better, and I can actually tolerate it compared to the 1st. I'm still left watching the songs go by, waiting for the next song, and then the next, thinking and asking myself "when will this be over?" Disc 1 was enough to give me Dylan fatigue for years. I almost wish I was told to listen to this in reverse order. Perhaps it wouldn't have been as bad? Ahhhh, who am I kidding. Disc 2 really saved this from being a 1/5
This seems like a weird choice for a Bob Dylan album for this list. I mean yeah he should absolutely have an album or two on the list, but this one? I mean it's a good live album but if there are one or two other Dylan albums on this list I don't know why this would be included. Anyway, never been much of a Bob Dylan fan. I appreciate that he was an icon of folk music (for whatever reason) and a good lyricist, I wouldn't go as far as calling him a poet. I was ready to be done with this after just a few songs. And I hate the folksy harmonica, it's just not my thing. I feel like if you were really into Bob Dylan then you'd love this. Everyone else is going to be a little bored with at least the first half of this record. I mean really the first half just drags on and is basically close to an hour of the same thing over and over. The second half picks up a bit when the full band comes in and it starts to hold your attention a little better. But the dude just can't sing. I mean slurring words and tones doesn't cover the fact that he just can't do it. I've always found him to be supremely overrated and this record shows exactly why. 2/5
I was not impressed by this. First Bob Dylan album. I liked the second half with the band a bit more.
I don't like Bob Dylan and I was tired of this after two songs
In couldn’t make it through
I don't like long albums, I don't like live albums, and (all due respect) I'm not a particularly big fan of listening to Bob Dylan. I kept putting this one off, but I was hoping to like it honestly. But I was over it by the end of like track 3. 2.5/5
This is substantially worse than the studio albums these songs are on.
overdone live stuff
