WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Oh man, I remember being so afraid of the whole Slipknot aesthetic as a kid. This album cover used to (and still does) creep me the fuck out. As far as Slipknot goes, this is the way I prefer to listen to them. Early, energetic, and crusty. Opens on a weird little sampled interlude that turns into the complete adrenaline rush that is (sic). One of my all time favorite Slipknot songs just for its pure unrelenting energy. Heavy riffs + absolute madness on the drums and Corey Taylor's effective scream. This gives way to Eyeless, which opens on a little DnB sample and then the drums and heavy riff carry that energy off the deep end. First song on which Taylor shows off his vocal flexibility, weaving well-sung sections with screaming. I enjoy the tempo play here throughout. Wait and Bleed is the closest thing to a "single" that this album has to offer -- probably because it has a sung chorus and consistent structure. Surfacing is not my favorite of the songs on here -- I find the prominent guitar screetch to be quite annoying -- but I do love the drums and little unexpected bass interlude. A couple slipped by in the background, but Prosthetics stands out for its unique tone relative to the rest. A bit more effect-laden and taps more directly into something of the alternative nu-metal of the day with the needling guitar and spaced out sections. Maybe not one of the stronger songs here, but I find it interesting. Ultimately, I feel like this album is very much front-loaded. While the back half isn't bad, nothing stands out significantly. On the other hand, any of the first 6 songs (neglecting the intro) could make a perfect soundtrack for putting ones head through a wall (or several). Love the tempo gymnastics and electro-sampling elements throughout. Also, naturally, the high BPM drums are tight and pull a lot of the songs together and set the stage for Corey Taylor's impressive vocal display. This is a solid album and a 4 in my eyes.

Really love the drumming and the overall energy that Slipknot brings. I have never really been a fan of their lyrics or their vocals, but the vocals are a lot more bearable than I remember from All Hope is Gone. I wasn't sure if this was worthy of 4 territory just because it's not my personal taste, but I was definitely vibing to it so it definitely gets that push over the line. The drums are truly the focal point for my admiration of this album. Don't know if I'll ever listen to it again, but I enjoyed this dance. I also love the idea of listening to Slipknot while grinding away at Excel on a Tuesday morning. Just the way they intended for it to be listened to.

This will jump out punch you in the face. I consider it one of the best metal albums of the 90's. This is a must listen for anyone.

Corey Taylor has one of the greatest screaming voices of all time. This music made even the kids with ADHD sit up and pay attention. Revolutionary, and never topped within the genre.

Didn't know slipknot was actually good music

surfacing, spit it out, liberate. not something I'd listen to casually tbh but a very energizing album.

hell yea didn't realize how heavy they were always thought it was more butt rock/numetaly

Way better than expected, more melodic, clever musical style, great lyrics.

Mainly a 4 for the drumming being so good.

First half is really good but the second half is meh,

A slipknot album I actually enjoy. Back when they still had talented members. Joey Is an absolute beast. A lot of filler though. This is peak Slipknot. But they are very edgy, with some lyrics that are a little cringy. But it is an album of the late 90s early 00s, so it makes sense. Very creative album

The energy is fantastic, and it’s interesting to see how well the use of electronics, sampling and particularly record scratches fit within the sound. Unlike other Nu-Metal with record scratches it doesn’t feel out of place, but like an additional texture to the soundscape, as it really should be. Unfortunately it’s also a long album, when it doesn’t necessarily need to be. The second half is less memorable than the first. I think it’s probably a 3.5, so am teetering between a 3 and a 4. Ultimately I enjoyed it more than I didn’t, the energy and riffs on the less memorable tracks are still fun, so I’m gonna go with the 4

Good album.

Rock industrial. Pesado. Con fiereza. Guitarras intensas. Energía desbocada

Lyrics: The lyrical content of Slipknot's debut album is raw, visceral, and often confrontational. Lyricist Corey Taylor explores themes of anger, disillusionment, and societal alienation, reflecting the band's discontent with their surroundings and a broader sense of societal unrest. The opening track, "742617000027," sets an eerie tone with distorted whispers and ambient noise, providing an unsettling prelude to the chaos that follows. "Spit It Out" showcases Taylor's aggressive delivery and disdain for conformity. The lyrics express frustration with societal expectations and encourage listeners to reject conformity. Taylor's ability to convey intense emotion and connect with the audience emotionally is a strength that runs throughout the album. However, some critics argue that the lyrics may come across as overly angsty or even juvenile. The explicit language and aggressive tone, while resonating with some listeners, may be off-putting to others seeking more nuanced or introspective themes. Music: The musical aspect of Slipknot's debut is an onslaught of aggression and intensity. The band's lineup, featuring nine members with diverse musical backgrounds, contributes to a cacophony of sound that defies traditional genre boundaries. Tracks like "Eyeless" and "Wait and Bleed" showcase the band's ability to seamlessly blend elements of metal, industrial, and even hip-hop. The percussion section, led by Shawn Crahan and Chris Fehn, is a standout element. The relentless drumming, coupled with the percussive elements of custom-made percussion instruments, creates a chaotic yet controlled sonic landscape. Guitarists Mick Thomson and Jim Root deliver crushing riffs, while Sid Wilson's turntables and samples add an electronic and industrial edge. On the flip side, the intensity and heaviness may be overwhelming for some listeners. The album's unrelenting aggression can be seen as a double-edged sword, either drawing fans in with its energy or pushing away those seeking more melodic or subdued elements. Production: Produced by Ross Robinson, Slipknot's debut benefits from a production style that captures the band's ferocity and energy. The decision to record live in the studio enhances the album's raw and unpolished feel, contributing to its authentic and primal sound. Robinson's approach, emphasizing emotion over technical perfection, aligns with Slipknot's desire to create an intense and visceral listening experience. However, some critics argue that the production could be too abrasive for some listeners, with moments of distortion and chaos overshadowing the finer details of the music. The intentional rawness of the production may be a barrier for those who prefer more polished and refined soundscapes. Themes: The thematic core of Slipknot's debut revolves around anger, frustration, and a sense of alienation. The band's lyrics delve into personal struggles, societal discontent, and a rejection of conformity. The masks worn by the band members symbolize a desire to escape societal expectations and be true to oneself, emphasizing the importance of individuality in the face of a conformist culture. The album also explores themes of self-destruction and inner turmoil, evident in tracks like "Prosthetics" and "Scissors." These darker themes contribute to the overall sense of unease and chaos that permeates the album. While the intensity of the themes resonates with many fans, they may be too bleak or nihilistic for some listeners. The lack of a clear resolution or positive message in the lyrics can be alienating for those seeking more uplifting or hopeful themes in their music. Influence: Slipknot's debut album had a profound impact on the metal and alternative music scenes. The band's fusion of metal, industrial, and rap elements created a unique sound that inspired a wave of imitators and contributed to the emergence of the nu-metal genre. The aggressive and theatrical stage presence of the band, along with their distinctive image, set them apart in a crowded musical landscape. The influence of Slipknot can be seen in subsequent bands that embraced a similar blend of heavy music and theatricality, such as Mushroomhead and Mudvayne. The album's success also opened doors for the broader acceptance of alternative and heavier music in mainstream culture, paving the way for the success of bands like Korn and Limp Bizkit. Despite their influence, Slipknot faced criticism for the perceived commercialization of their image and sound. Some purists argued that the band's success diluted the authenticity of the underground metal scene, leading to a divide among fans and critics. Pros: Raw Intensity: Slipknot's debut album is a visceral experience, capturing the raw energy and intensity of the band's live performances. Genre Fusion: The album successfully blends elements of metal, industrial, and hip-hop, creating a sound that defies easy categorization. Theatricality: Slipknot's image and stage presence added a theatrical element to their music, contributing to their uniqueness in the metal scene. Influence: The album's impact on the metal and alternative music scenes is undeniable, influencing a generation of musicians and shaping the trajectory of nu-metal. Cons: Overwhelming Aggression: The relentless aggression and intensity may be too much for some listeners, potentially limiting the album's appeal. Lack of Diversity: The album's consistent tone and lack of musical diversity may make it less appealing to those seeking a more varied listening experience. Abrasive Production: The intentionally raw production may be a barrier for listeners who prefer more polished and refined soundscapes. Nihilistic Themes: The bleak and nihilistic themes explored in the lyrics may be off-putting to those seeking more positive or uplifting messages in their music. Conclusion: Slipknot's debut album stands as a landmark in heavy music, pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. Its raw intensity, genre-defying sound, and thematic exploration of anger and alienation left an indelible mark on the late 90s music scene. While the album may not be universally embraced due to its overwhelming aggression and darker themes, its influence on the evolution of metal and alternative music is undeniable. Slipknot's debut remains a testament to the power of authenticity and the ability of music to evoke strong emotions and resonate with a diverse audience.

I never even knew that I liked slipknot, but the vibe and the energy was just what I needed at the gym after work. There was more musicality and a little less screeching than I was expecting.t

This album might have my top 3 favorite Slipknot songs on it but man do I not see whatever I saw in Slipknot when I was a kid anymore. Drums are still incredible though.

Its a good mix of metal sounds and industrial. I think theres a reason they've made it so far.

I enjoyed it; it’s Slipknot, so you know what you’re getting into with it, but I’m always surprised at how much I dig it.

(sic) // Eyeless // Wait and Bleed // Surfacing // 3.5/5

Love it.there us such thing as an album being too long though.

Visceral, in your face, full of energy… fucking good album.

Never thought I’d be the kind of person to enjoy Slipknot but apparently I was wrong

true metal music, understandable if others can't get into it, the vocals especially can be a bit grating at times, but the intensity is handled extremely well with absolute headbanging music

Good heavy 2000s metal. It’s like a guy version of Kittie.

Considered a 5 but a little too edgelord and dated

Crazy to think how groundbreaking nu-metal sounded at launch

Very angry in a teen-angst sort of way, but it feels so genuine and raw, and the musicianship is unquestionably top-notch. Favourite tracks: (sic), Eyeless, Spit It Out.

I love slipknot this is my third favorite album and it still holds up imo very good stuff especially the front half

Eentje voor de liefhebbers.

Nothing this loud should have such great melodies. I'm ready to run through a brick wall.

Metal in general is not something I had a shine towards, but in my older age I'm looking back at things I didn't pay much attention to and having an open mind for it. This album pulls in from different places I'm familiar with - Helmet a little Nine Inch Nails, Faith No More in particular, but just didn't explore much. The chugging guitars, the guttural screaming, it's all glorious, even if I have to pause to let my ears stop ringing. Wait and Bleed has a melodic hook that sticks with you, has a rapid fire rap and a hook in the chorus. The hidden track Eeyore is a speed thrash gem. I'd have to agree with this album being a "terrifying racket", but I consider that high praise.

Aggressive as hell and still sounds fresh

Rating: 8/10 Best songs: (sic), Eyeless, Wait and bleed, Prosthetics, Diluted

Nu metal elegante. Un 4.

An amazing album full of 5s and 3s gets a 4.

Brings me back to HS

I liked this more than I expected to - it breathes some new life into the metal genre. And at the end of Scissors I actually said "wow!".

I've always felt a sense of repulsion toward Slipknot. To me they seem to epitomise everything dirty and gross born out of the 90s nu metal scene even if they dispute that genre classification) - the closest thing I can materialise it to is the smell of dreadlocks.

Stroke of luck here. I'd just bought my first nu-metal album "Poisonous Legacy"- Sarabante, when this Slipknot! was fed to me. What an experience. Lots of highlights, although at 60min, way to long. The CD age forced these long run times, but this could've been a 45mim masterpeice.

A pioneer of the nu-metal genre. And still to this day one of the biggest rock bands in the world. Given their aesthetic and almost character based personas, they have a very cult-esque following. People love Slipknot. And some people can't stand it. I imagine most who find them annoying now probably loved them at one point, but have grown out of that sound. As someone who has never delved into their albums, but always respected what they did, I feel some don't give enough credit to these guys. They found a niche people loved, and blew up in a way no one anticipated. And there are some genuinely talented musicians behind this band. Easily the best parts of this album for me are Joey and Corey. Joey just fits this sound so perfectly. He was incredibly proficient and moved at lightning pace, but also hit like a truck. It's hard to combine those elements effectively, and he mastered it. The intro on "Eyeless" alone is a perfect example of his skill. And Corey pushes his voice to a place I'm not sure the human vocal chords are meant to achieve. Sometimes it's concerning how far he goes. "Scissors" is a prime example. There is a moment where I can only imagine he is spitting out blood, and the way his voice cracks in and out of his screaming at the end of the song sounds physically painful. It is genuinely impressive to pull off that kind of singing on every song. I also love the brief moments where you can hear Craig Jones' sampling take the forefront. Again on "Eyeless", where they make the genius move of including an amen break in the intro. I don't think the lyrical content is anything amazing. There aren't really any deeper meanings or messages that they try to communicate through the lyrics. They are just very dark and brooding, and always angry at something. Do they sometimes border on cringe-worthy? Occasionally yeah. But that seems to be a regular characteristic of Slipknot's music. It isn't meant to be deep and meaningful, unless you are a depressed and angsty teenager. I can see why some would look back at this band negatively and question how they could ever consider this good. But sometimes I am in the mood for music that is a little more mindless, and takes less concentration to enjoy. Not every metal album has to be filled with genius innovation and songwriting. Some people just want to mosh and scream their lungs out, and that's okay.

Get out of the kitchen if you cant handle the heat 4

Never listened to this band, but feel like I should have been all along.

i had work done today to fix a titanium insert into my skull for attaching a replacement tooth to. this felt appropriate. and for the record it was knocked out by being really cool and not by doing something that a tosser would do.

var nice men begynte å bli repetitivt

(sic) through spit it out is a legendary stretch - haters can suck my nuts and just embrace getting their face melted off by OG corey taylor’s vocal performance

That run of first 5 or 6 songs on the record is pure gold. After that, it does get just a tad samey and lackluster, but still a very strong record. Better than I expected from their debut, frankly.

Strong album, but maybe could have cut 2 or 3 tracks to really make this thing soar.

Man - this is not my music, but it is fucking impressive.

I really didn’t think I’d like Slipknot, but yeah I really dug this album. The drumming in particular stood out the whole way through, but I also liked the vocals and the switches they would do between vocal styles. It’s a very catchy album.

No esperaba nada y me terminó sorprendiendo.

Metal, with record scratches! I am not super familiar with metal, even less with nu metal. But I really enjoyed this one.

Better than expected...

Goddem good I like the part where he went RAHHH

Ahhh, to be an angsty teenager again. brings me back.

A modern clasSick () to say it with Alice cooper... Violent, frest, unheard, brutal.

I never really look forward to listening to Slipknot, but I'll be damned if they are not interesting as a band. I do wish they would do more melodic stuff like Wait and Bleed rather than all of the atonal screaming. However, it's really neat to listen to their albums and pick out all of the different musical styles that influencing them. The second song on this album starts with a drum n' bass beat, then proceeds to show that this style of beat fits just fine in metal music. There's clearly a lot of different metal influences in their music, but hip-hop is also influencing their style. The prominence of percussion in their music also makes it compelling to listen to. It's one of those weird situations where, superficially this seems like music I shouldn't enjoy, but there's enough craftsmanship and cool stylistic choices that I find it really compelling as an album, even though there aren't many individual songs that I like on their own 4/5 Iowa represent

I didn't go into this one thinking I would like it that much, but I actually really like the front half-ish from this album. Would recommend if you like metal. Highlights: 2, 3, 4, 6, 9, and 10.

Biased as I grew up with this and am a slipknot fan. I love this, its gritty, violent and at times beautiful, you can tell they are trying to find their niche so it's not their greatest album (Vol 3 IMO) but it's still great work that goes on a tad too long

Great album

Maybe the ultimate nu-metal album? Or is it Toxicity? It's up there with the best of the genre, at the very least. This one dropped like an atomic bomb when it got released, building a bridge between more extreme metal riffs and all the nu-metal characteristics, like a scratch and vocals acrobatics that shifts from agressive to emotional. That spoke a lot to a young and angry generation that weren't finding Marilyn Manson edgy anymore or death metal cool enough.

Cant put a 5 since I'm not a metal fan, but got to admit I shake a leg all long.

So angry. Pantera with industrial beats and funny masks. It doesn't suck

Beter dan ik me kon herrineren

Intense

Wow, this album doesn't let you escape. Every once in a while I dip my toe into Slipknot - a couple of these sounded familiar, and I think I was enjoying it for a couple tracks. I get why people are impressed by this. As the album wore on though I just started thinking, does the world need this? Does this music just encourage a kind of toxic disposition that ends up hurting people? Or is it cathartic? I'm not sure. But the feeling I had most while listening to this, was scared.

The scary masks and boiler suits are a clever gimmick and large part of Slipknot's huge success, but so is their music. Behind the cartoonish image and superfast drumming, the songs on their debut album pretty catchy and commercial. I quite happily tapped my toe along to this for 40 mins. Throw in a couple of hit singles and you have yourself a good album. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Wait and Bleed Date listened: 13/10/22

I can see why people are into this.

Iowa better doe

Nu metal elegante. Un 4.

Slipknot is boos en maakt deze parel. Valt op hoeveel heavier ze vroeger waren. Klassiekers: spit it out, wait & bleed. Surfacing, leuke ontdekking;

Dugo dugo ga nisam slusala. Jos uvijek je dobar.

Ihaj, ovo je odličan album. Znam mu se vratiti kad mi treba neki ispušni ventil.

iconic

I wasn't really into this when it came out, despite probably being the target age. Lots of friends listened to it and "Wait and Bleed" was frequently played on music tv channels so I came to know the songs through osmosis. I have come to appreciate slipknot later in life. This album is exciting, it's full of interesting and head nodding rhythms layered with powerful and heavy and sometimes screaming guitar sounds. Standouts for me are the Jungle intno to "Eyeless", the classis "Wait and Bleed", the guitar & bass call and response on "Surfacing", the strange, haunting, screaching sounds that somehow are made by a guitar on "Tattered and Torn" There's also some industrial sounds and some walking Jazz bass here and there! If you can look past the Nu Metal rapping and dj scratching that was the style at the time it makes for a great listen.

The nu-metal ages poorly but otherwise this is great

Listen... I know that they're Slipknot but I can't help but think that this shit fucking rocks. It makes me want to punch boulders and chug mountain dew.

Sheeeit man. That dude said if your 14 and hate your stepdad this is for you. Well bro was right, when I was 14 this shit was untouchable. However, I am not fourteen anymore. But to a certain Degree I appreciate it for the Nostalgia, it's fun man.

A vocalist whose main objective is to destroy his throat. A drummer who probably wished he has four arms. And of course, everyone is very angry about everything. This album is basically one satan reference away from being the most stereotypically metal metal album. But it does rock. Those speedy drum fills, heavy riffs, and mad vocals hype me up. It's so energizing. I don't hate the world, but I gotta admit that this is a perfect work-out album. Another heavy metal album that I actually enjoy.

не мое

Fucking iconic.

Nice album here that’s hardcore and intense. Always felt slick or had a unique sound and was able to differentiate themselves from other metal groups. The double bass drums are great and the guitar riffs are solid. Pretty nice album but probably my second favorite of theirs. 7.7/10

So when I was around 13 I got a mix cd from my cousin. This mix cd was exclusively metal and there were 2 songs on that cd that hit me harder than any of the others. 2 songs that are the reason I got into metal. They were "Toxicity" by System of a Down and "Wait and Bleed" by Slipknot. I lost that cd in a move shortly after I got it and I didn't have a track list for it because what 13 year old keeps a track list? It took years for me to rediscover "Wait and Bleed" and when I did I think I listened to this album on repeat for like a month straight. Thank you random album generator for reminding me of this. I have so much love for Slipknot, both the band and the album, but I would argue that it's not their best. That's not to discount the album by any means, it's a fantastic album. Easy 4. Maybe a 4.5 but that's likely angsty teen Been talking.

Holy shit I'm 16 again. The nostalgia hit for this album probably impairs my ability to judge if it's actually good or not, this was one of the gateway albums that got me into metal. Well, I say 'this album' the extra demo versions and remixes at the end of Spotify's offering of the '10th anniversary' certainly aren't needed. Original please! Slipknot still rips. (sic) is, well exactly as it declares itself, Wait and Bleed is a classic and the rest of the record maintains a consistent level of head banging goodness, though it is frontloaded with the latter parts (even discounting the extras on the Spotify version) are definitely weaker than the opening salvo.

I love albums full of energy, and Slipknot definitely deliver. From the moment it began I had a huge grin on my face, which peaked around wait and bleed/ surfacing and stayed there for pretty much the entirety of the record. Why isn't this a 5 then? Unfortunately, it can't keep up the quality and starts to die off somewhere around the midpoint.

I have only listened to "Duality" by these guys. No doubt they definitely have a LOT of musicality, particularly in the drums. This album solidifies it for me. But the amount of screaming and energy is... almost too much. I would have liked to have heard more guitar, solos and such. Have it brought more to the foreground, you know? I listened to the anniversary edition, which had some of their demos on it. Those are just a primal scream more than anything else. So the album itself is probably a 3.5 for me.

Loud and rawcous, but unexpectedly eclectic and musical. Made me feel like a disaffected youth again. RAAAAAAAAGH!!!

Angry. Don't typically like this genre but this was enjoyable if you are in the mood. Raw energy.

love it still sounds so hectic and heavy

some classic bangers

Great album but not their best. I can understand why this album and style of music isn't for everyone.

Friends and sister always used to love Slipknot, but I had never listened to them. Pretty good fun to listen to. I guess a bit dated, but good energy.

My expectations for this one were rather low, as I had a low opinion of Slipknot back when I was still a metalhead (considered them a sellout, etc). Turns out, this album sounds a lot better than I expected. I particularly enjoyed the drumming and the variation in instrumentation and song structure. I'm not too big on growling anymore these days, so I liked the less-growly songs such as Wait And Bleed better. Also not too big on the rap in songs such as Spit It Out. All in all this was a positive surprise though.

i liked this, especially the first couple songs! it's super intense/exciting but that makes it kind of a lot to listen to the full length of. i like that the songs are fairly distinct, and they do a good job with buildup and payoff. i don't know metal that well well but i can tell that this thing is dated/90s-y, particularly in the sections where the singer isn't screaming. also the heavy breathing/whisper singing part in scissors really got on my nerves.

Much more varied, and smarter than I'd expected. Metal mixed with random techno, d&b - will relisten

Power thrash from my childhood. I suppose this music is part of my DNA, so it's hard for me to not enjoy it.

Always epic.

Tbt to my childhood lmao! Didn’t realize these songs I’m familiar with were slipknot! Good shit

heard this album countless times, was at exactly the right age when it came out to think it was cool. it still is tbh, full of energy and it's brutal as - I can see why people went "nah this is nu-metal shit ay", but I also think those people are fuckin idiots. 4/5.

yeh yeh ooooh

Pretty good debut record from a metal band in the late 90s. A slight variation on the standard nu metal of the time that separated them from the pack.

I consider myself a metal head but I always thought these dudes were posers. That being said there are a few sweet riffs in here.

Surprisingly good but I couldn't keep that up for as long as real fans. My throat hurts thinking about it.

I recall enjoying this when it came out. Upon relisten, I was shuffling through about five tracks and skipping the copious amount of filler. This one could have easily dropped 20 minutes or so. The percussion is incredibly tight and stands up today. The rest not so much. Eyeless and Surfacing are still pretty dope.

There are songs on here that remind me of a time, so it gets a 3

If you watch 0certain types of movie this music is either liked by teenage boys or serial killers. Now I am neither of these but is was OK. Drumming was good.

I enjoyed the first half of the album. Eyeless, Wait and Bleed and Surfacing all next to each other make the second half of the album seem to drag on. Those three songs and the drumming skills are saving the rating for me. The drumming on this album is on another level.

I'd like to like this more than I do...and I was, like, 17 or 18 when this came out. I should have been a prime candidate to like this but I just never got into them. The musicianship is fine...even great. Jordison is an all-time drummer for a reason. It's hard not to appreciate what he's doing here. This is good, hard, aggressive music. This is what you want to listen to in the gym when you're trying to get that last rep or run that last quarter mile. The nu-metal influences and random DJ scratches just kind of ruin it for me. I don't even mind the singing all that much, it's fine. It just doesn't hit for me. Glad I listened to it, liked parts of it but I don't think I'd want to come back to it.

Not sure why the two Slipknot albums on here are the ones that were chosen over Iowa and vol 3 subliminal verses. Its alright, but they have better albums than this one.

Wait and Bleed is the only decent song because it actually has a melody. I don’t mind the screaming but there’s nothing to offset it with. Just heavy drums and rahhhh.

6/10 beautiful drums Will i add this album to my library: maybe

Powerful beginning. "Wait and Bleed" is great. This album was part of my adolescence (late part but still).

Thought I'd hate this. The drumming was stellar and the overall sonics were great. It's just the singing. At least I could understand him. I'd rate this a 3

I actually don't like this much, which surprised me ⭐⭐⭐

I had to listen to this on a Monday morning after maybe 5 hours of poor sleep. I think it helped me wake up but I think I'd enjoy this more without the screamo. Yes, I know. That's the genre! But the vocals are good and for my enjoyment, if there was no screamo element I'd enjoy it a lot more.

Better than Coldplay

"Here comes the pain!" I've never really liked the popy side of Wait and Bleed

I can definitely hear some of the industrial influence here which but I honestly didn't really enjoy I think I might enjoy it more in subsequent listens but for now I don't love it 6/10 Favourite: Eyeless Least Favourite: Frail Limb Nursery

Bit heavy for my taste but quite good

Fan of numetal, and love some of these tracks. Just not an album I will want to listen to start to finish often

It was ok I liked a few songs

it’s just a lot for 8am. but it does kinda make me wanna lift suuuuper heavy weights

I think Nu metal is fine, I kinda like how slipknot was a bit different and added in the theatrics. The vocals are impressive Corey Taylor was made to scream and his actual singing vocals are really good, the rapping is something that nu metal could lose. The production is great and this is a good sounding album. However over an hour of screamo is a bit much and I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this album again

It's always interesting to listen to nu-metal because I love metal music, especially the more extreme genres like death metal that this record borrows heavily from, so all the sounds I like are generally there. Yet I can't really get myself that enamored with this record despite that. And I think its mostly due to presentation and how the band comes off. A lot of times with nu-metal, even if it sounds similar to what I like, it just comes off as juvenile and whiney (vs. a band like Death, who sounds like they actually have something to say). Slipknot are generally better in that regard compared to a Korn, Limp Bizkit, or Disturbed, but not by much. Another thing generally hurting it is the drum production being so poppy and metallic (not in the sense of being pop or metal music, but in the sense of the onomatopoeia "pop" or a very metallic sound). This is a general problem with a lot of nu-metal, honestly. It clashes with the other instruments hard, really letting down Joey Jordinson's excellent playing. Lastly, what's hurting this album in particular is the lack of anything that is catchy. The whole album is just blistering heavy, with no breather room for something more melodic, even when Corey Taylor sings clean). Like, later on Slipknot would go on to make better stuff with more of an ear for hooks and pop sensibilities like Psychosocial (one of my go-to karaoke songs - also check out the fantastic mashup with Justin Bieber's Baby: Psychosocial Baby), Duality (which can be sung to the tune of Dolly Parton's song Jolene, and vis versa), and Before I Forget (shoutout Guitar Hero 3). That said, like I mentioned before, generally the sounds on this thing are the type of stuff I can get into, so it was a fairly pleasant and mildly enjoyable listen. Good headbang-ability to throw on in the background and go pick up groceries (which is how I actually listened to this, haha). I do think nu-metal is a genre though that, to truly appreciate, you need nostalgia for (similar to two other genres from around the same time, pop punk and emo, although I generally can get into those more). Aside from some huge hits that I remember from high school, this genre does not do much for me. Definitely a case of right band, wrong album for the 1001 IMO.

Great for a heavy lifting workout, not great for the commute home

It's annoying seeing this here as their two best albums aren't even on this list; however this sets out their stall about what we would come to expect. Insane vocal acrobatics, breakbeat and head pounding drums, guitars strafing your ears and undistilled anger. The masks may have made them appear to be a tad gimmicky, but any listen to their albums shows they're the real deal. This is a good album, but you can see this is a band finding their feet. It tends to slip into different flavours of noise... and it still didn't convince me that it should be on here. That should go to Iowa and Subliminal Verses Vol.3. Best Tracks: Wait and Bleed; Spit It Out; Liberate

Beautiful, melodic and relaxing

I was ready to give this a 1 just because... well it's Slipknot, but shit this is actually a really tight band. What a drummer for a start! Obviously the scratching and white rapping has dated badly (Nu Metal was dated almost as soon as it came out haha), and the angst theatrics and costumes were always a bit of a put off, but reluctantly I have to say this record has some very good metal on it... Id rather listen to this than Limp Biscuit anyway!

Best Song: Eyeless. I liked the intensity and the goofy voices. Worst Song: Tattered & Torn. I hate when you can tell that someone is trying to be dark and brooding. Performative darkness. Overall: Apparently I'd heard more about Slipknot than I'd actually heard them. I never realized how nu metal they were. It's okay, but it feels really juvenile, somehow. Like it was written expressly to be played over videos of gnarly kickflips and shit. At first I thought it was at least good for some radio-friendly edginess, but as the album dragged on I found myself just getting annoyed by the cloying sameness of it all.

It's not my personal favourite choice of metal genre, but I enjoyed more than a few moments! I have to be in a particular mood for metal, so it caught me on a good metal day! I've been listening to more thrash and death metal recently with one of my children, so I particularly enjoyed the drum proficiency of this album.

Guffawed when this popped up after submitting the last review. Hope you're happy Soph. Been meaning to listen to this one forever as someone who has given his fair share of listening time to Nu Metal and will continue to valiantly defend the Korn debut. Hard to tell from the 1 1/2 listens but I think they've earned their fame - at times it feels derivative of Korn but certainly they carved at least a pretty significant sound of their own. Wildly frantic and all sorts of weird shit going down like the erratic variety of vocal styles Corey goes through and all the doohickeys they bang on. Gotta do something with the 8 dudes in this band. Feels like the missing link between probably the two best nu metal bands (that aren't SOAD - who I would say hardly count - though funnily enough Corey Taylor puts on a carbon copy Serj flow on Eyeless), Korn and Linkin Park. Certainly thoroughly enjoyable, deserves more listening. 3.5

This is definitely not my thing, but I was surprised to find that I liked it more than the other metal that's come up so far. Unlike Metallica or Anthrax, the vocal style felt well matched to the extremeness of the music.

Baby’s first extreme metal. I found this kids who loved this band when they first appeared in high school extremely silly and annoying. The music itself is about the same but isn’t itself terrible and has some cool moments, though the production is unfortunate and the lyrics are unintentionally (I think) comical.

I loved funk metal, and not just the good ones but really not good ones like Saigon Kick and Mordred. Metal with a DJ just felt so exciting, and then I heard stuff like rage against the machine and eventually was less astounded by a metal band with a DJ. Slipknot however never lost that love and they built a huge chaotic noise around it. Intense, aggressive and pummelling. This is the sound of your inner 16 year old, and Tbf my inner 16 year old loves it

I'm more familiar with "Subliminal Verses"/"All Hope Is Gone"-era Slipknot, which I do like. So I figured this debut album would be a more rough version of that, but it comes across as a lot more nu-metal. I actually got Linkin Park vibes from this, even though this technically came out a year before (some rapping and a good bit of turntables). I do like heavy music (so I didn't hate this), and this is a foundation of the Slipknot I enjoy. However, I enjoy better the sound they created for themselves later on (heavy music with melodies and singing parts). I will also say that Corey's voice has gotten better over time, because his vocals are rough at times here (and rapping does not suit him).

Surprisingly good or was I in a bad mood

I gotta say, I've listened to a lot of metal in my life and have particularly avoided Slipknot and Korn because of the fanbase around them. Everyone I've ever met who when asked what their top artists they enjoy are and they mention Slipknot, Korn, or Limp Bizkit I am genuinely not surprised. Music generally does not reflect you as a person, it's just audio and sound preference, but for some reason Nu-Metal/Rap-Metal fans let it control who they are. They're the ones with the gangster Bugs Bunny oversized shirts, or the Affliction apparel. They reek of week old B.O., cigarette ash, cheap whiskey, and litter box. They have extremely abrasive personalities and are generally products of toxic divorced parents. Now the music itself is just rage. It's noise and experimenting with horrible sounds to produce sounds and music that make me want to claw the skin off my face. I think this is actually a pretty decent nu-metal album with industrial metal influences. It definitely got my heart rate up and started putting me in a bad mood by the end of the album which - respectfully - is what the point is. I think the mask gimmick is pretty fun too, and using the masks as different horror personalities is awesome live. I particularly liked "(sic)" and "Wait and Bleed". Their drums are fucking awesome too, it's the first time a snare drum has sounded like it belongs in music. Metallica tried to make it work in St. Anger - probably influenced in part by this album - but it just sounded awful. This snare drum fits in great to the general sound of this metal. Overall I'll rate it 7/10, it's still got that ashy taste in my mouth from its core fanbase, but it's not bad nu-metal music.

A welcome change from the pop norm of this list. I enjoy hearing one or two songs, but listening to the whole album would be difficult Very good angry noise. The vocals, drums, and guitars all hit. I appreciated the occasional break from typical heavy metal as well. It loses rating from me because it's hard to listen through and because there are some weak tracks

Actually really enjoyed the instrumentals the guitar riffs are sick, the vocal style is just not my thing

While the lyrics can feel somewhat juvenile at times, two guitars are incredibly tight and heavy, and the drumming drives everything forward with relentless energy. That said, I find myself preferring their later albums.

I certainly didnt expect to but i think i enjoyed that! Not my genre, but was immediately impressed with the variety and accessibility. The surprise jungle break, the rap, nu metal and the 74 different percussionists. Sure its way too long and it descends into too much nu metal and the lyrics are pathetic but its a good entry point.

Favorite Track: Eyeless

It's not really my cup of tea and I can't really say I enjoyed it much.

The lyrics are very cringe shouty teen angst, but luckily you can barely make them out. The drumming is fantastic and overall I quite enjoyed it.

Blinking heck this is an assault on the senses. And not always (or in fact rarely) in a good way. It was actually better than I remembered, because of my healthy disdain for Slipknot fans growing up skewing my perception. It's very unpleasant, of course, but there is a little something about it. Like a rollercoaster on a hangover I guess.

Slipknot were always the heavies of all the mainstream metal bands of their time. They took the sound pioneered by Korn and Limp Bizkit and made their guitars even louder and more downtuned, the vocals harsher, and the visual aesthetics darker. Never one of my favorites of the genre, this album was just before my time, and as far as Metal goes, at the time I was more into stuff like Evanescence, Marilyn Manson, or System of a Down. Maybe this album was too testosterone, too macho for my tastes. Either way, not bad and still probably get teen boys roused all over the world today. Key tracks: (sic) Eyeless Surfacing

Not a huge Slipknot fan but I do enjoy the hits when I am at the gym or need to internally scream for a bit. This is defiantly not for everyone but it has a place in music culture of the 00s. I wouldn't say it's their best album and most songs are the same even if I like the sound

iconic

Hard HARD rock. Not really my think but good production

↑: (sic), Wait and Bleed, Spit It Out, Tattered & Torn, Diluted ↓: Eyeless, Prosthetics, Scissors

I enjoyed listening to this. First time i’ve listened to a full album by this band. It was incredible to have blasting through my headphones whilst I mowed the lawn. Corey really pushes his vocal cords to the limit.

More fun than I was expecting.

I can see why alienated teenagers would enjoy this kind of music. It’s just really not my favorite genre of music. “Scissors” was the best track on the album. The Too bad this album was way too noisy because cutting through the noise there were some interesting lyrics here and there.

Better than expected

decent

Better than I expected.

Strong start, weaker finish 3

Amazing 2/3. Past that, I had to actively ignore the lyrics to appreciate the music.

Great album from a band I only know from this record. Wait and Bleed is the most melodic of the songs so it’s nice to hear some actual singing beyond just screaming, really shows range. I’ll take a big percussion section in any band any day.

Kinda goes hard if you open yourself up tp it. Cringiest lyrics tho

I can't lie, this was my shit back in high school. Listening to this now, I can't really take the lyrics seriously. The first half is quite decent, but the rest just drags on. 5/10

Despite being part of the nu-metal 'scene' I was never that into Slipknot. I might like the odd-song, but it never really appealed beyond that. There is some good stuff in here, but it gets a bit much after a while. They became a much better band over time in my opinion. This one is just quite raw and messy. It's not that bad though.

Top Songs: Wait and Bleed Spit it out

Sick but very creative.

Angry music is like angry driving: substantial increase in effort to accomplish minimal improvement. Although I enjoy some slipknot songs, this is solid guitar and drum work that lacks solid execution.

not really my kind of music, but you can't deny the influence it had on numetal in the early 2000s.

basim sisti

I did used to like this album a lot. The first 6 tracks still sound great. Disappointed with some of the tracks on the second half of the album that just feels repetitive and spooky for the sake of it. Overall good. 3.75

Nice, heavy rage album. Listened on vinyl. I have to be in a very certain mood for this.

I'm not a metalhead -- not even close. But you can see the makings of a good metal band in this album. Slipknot has a unique style of metal and the band is willing to add elements from other genres (rap and post grunge, for example) to their sound.

Random thoughts: * Listened to this while stuck in I-70 morning ski traffic. Not probably the best setting for this album. * If i want to get my rage on, this seem like a pretty good and aggressive album to put on. * The drumming was super technical and I enjoyed listening to it. * After a while a lot of this kind of just blended together but that has more to do with my lack of listening to this music and it just not my kind of music. * No Life caught my ear and was a fun listen. * I did notice this had that late 90s/early 2000s sound of that rap/metal. It wasn't full on rap but had that rhythm and vocals. * Julian did not like this album and he said the singer was too much of a try hard. He is also not a fan of the masks. I like the masks look and the singing on this. Way better than the growling vocals that I hate. * I would listen to this one again when I need to break some stuff.

decent metal

I don't hate the world today so this album didn't hit as hard as it could have.

Slipknot is a legendary metal band and for good reason there are some really good moments in this album, but this is also an incredibly long album, it’s very tiresome to listen to. Musically this hits though.

I liked it more than I want to admit. The energy is sweltering and unrelenting, in no small part due to the phenomenal drummer. Lots of industrial and harsh textures, but still weirdly musical. The lyrical content and vocal delivery is just as edgy and cringy as I expected, but I can appreciate it in a sort of "this is awful but fun" kind of way.

A lot of genre shock. Not my favorite, although there was some interesting stuff. I think the only way I could listen to this is working out

Apparently I was in the right mood for this as I was actually enjoying it.

I normally wouldn’t enjoy this at all, but the fact that I listened while I was on a tractor slashing the back paddock at my parent’s farm really put me in a mood to enjoy a bit of Slipknot. It made me realize the place & context by which you listen to the music can severely affect your feeling towards it. If I was listening at the office or while on a quiet walk or something it would have pissed me off and I’d have given it 1 or 2, but given the context it’s worth a 3. Wait And Bleed was the standout.

These guys look like stupid clowns, but the music is actually not that bad. There's elements of nu-metal and rap in here which totally sucks, but the parts that sound like thrash and old school hardcore are pretty cool.

I enjoyed this album a lot, although at the time it was drifting weirdly in the middle, it's definitely a rocking album right before the NuMetal crazy. I'm a fan!

Someone once said that Slipknot is music for fat, ugly kids. It's more or less true but that doesn't mean the music isn't brutal. I think of all the fat, ugly kids in my school who wore Slipknot shirts and JNCO jeans and chains and also liked ICP and my soul weeps for what was and will never be again.

I have tried to submit a review for this album THREE TIMES and it will not submit no matter what I try, so here's another condensed version. >Good instrumentals >Only edgy kids I knew when I was 11 liked this shit >I like Corey Taylor but he's trying way too hard to be edgy in this >listenable but I'm not coming back to this

Well, I gave their MUCH less acclaimed 2008 album a 3, so it seems reasonable that this should be >=3. This is going to shock everyone, but the Slipknot aesthetic makes literally no sense to me. I was reading an interview with some band members, and they said that more than experiencing commercial success and selling shows, all they wanted with their first album was for someone to hear this new fresh sound they created and loved. And to some extent, I get it - the detail and craftmanship sonically is evident. I just don't see a similar level of care lyrically. Don't just tell me that "life is too fucking hard", have some nuance. I feel like a lot of angry punk-rock is directed towards ex's which at least makes sense - their anger is just directionless. Idk, I guess I just don't get this as a complete product, but it's also not my style. The guitar, drum, and backing effects are enough to keep this at a 3.

Hits the ground running and is at its best when going full balls on the wall. However, by the time we're finishing Spit it Out they're out of tricks. All the record scratches and warbled synths in the world won't fix a medium metal album. Those drums tho. They're worth the admission price alone.

For a band that is basically byword for the excess, stupidity, and mindless violence of turn of the millennium metal this is actually surprisingly good. The riffs are, of course, hard and heavy and downtuned to mud, but have a good groove to them and the dj/effects give a bit of higher end texture. The screaming vocals have a guttural power and the odd bit of melody to them, once you get used to it it works. The sound is insanely thick and bricked, it fills all the space available instantly - the double blast drums especially leave no breathing room, to space to think - collapsing distance and submitting you fully to the noise - you either succumb and give yourself over to it, or switch it off immediately. Good thing the lyrics are all unintelligible bc they are so stupid it hurts and the raps are awful, but at least they're relatively rare. The most stressful thing possible to just passively have on in the background.

Not bad at all. Love the percussions for this one

Very aggressive

It's Slipknot I guess

I bought this album when it came out and thought it was great. But then I started to not buy into all of the stuff around it and I haven’t listened to it for a very long time. Some great tracks here but it does wane a little little under the weight of the length

Slipknot are loud, raucous and moody, This record pushed the heavy metal genre and has merit among fans. I know people who love this, but my appreciation would be restricted to live performance or perhaps halloween for the mood.

Chill out dude. Still fun whilst listening at the gym

Solid enough

You gotta give it to Slipknot: their vision and sound came already cohesively formed on their 1995 debut. To start with the good: Slipknot’s musical influences are impressively diverse. Besides drawing from the then-omnipresent alt-rock wave, they brought death and thrash metal galore to the table and even some tasty hardcore riffing - all wrapped in a layer of industrial grit. The lyrics, though, even when I first heard them as a teenager, failed to impress. To put it mildly, they’re pretty one-dimensional: Alright, you’re sick of everything. Cool. You hate people. Fair. But did it really have to be fifteen songs about exactly that? Unfortunately, the production is extremely fatiguing. The drumming for example is absolutely insane, but then the mix leaves zero room for any instrument to breathe (plus, the triggered drums-sound-like-tin style is absolutely overused and apparently they literally banged on oil cans). I assume this was meant to intensify the effect of the claustrophobic, misanthropic vibe, but in practice the recording just ends up sounding like a brick. Too bad… but very much in line with a lot of mainstream alt-rock production trends of the 90s. Even though I definitely heard worse. All that said, it’s still one of the better nu-metal records (after all, this is not Limp Bizkit… haha), largely because it leans into the metal side of the formula. But honestly, though: is it just me, or do the turntable parts sound oddly out of place and occasionally ridiculous? That doesn’t do the trick for me at all. Maybe that (along with the mushy sound) is the reason why the shock value of these tracks is rather low for me. Beyond being a massively influential band back then, Slipknot’s sound even found new disciples in the 2020s (Code Orange, Jesus Piece and Vein instantly pop in mind) - acts that pushed the more metallic hardcore aspects of the genre and for the most part (musically and lyrically) outsmarted their musical parents. Honestly, that’s a development I never thought we’d see. And yet, here we are, and I’m thinking: well, Slipknot… not even half as bad as I remembered.

Decent album, mixed pretty poorly but otherwise great guitar and drums. Vocals good and (controversially) a good listen. Not their best work but still decent nonetheless.

the absolute PEAK of scaring the hoes music. i don't mind this for what it is but it's kind of funny that 1 year after this linkin park would drop their debut and completely break nu metal by doing it better than anyone else while making it look a lot easier (mask budget was $0 for them)

Final thoughts: I wasn't looking forward to this but there are some headbangers. Mostly the front half ******************************************************************************* --(sic)...well, it definitely has energy --Eyeless...these guys seem upset --Surfacing...ok, this one's got me grooving --Spit it Out...some rapping. I'm starting to dig this --Tattered and Torn...ew no --Me Inside...I can't tell if this is Jonathan Davis or an impersonation --No Life...I like the bass

It was ok..not sure if I can listen to this kind of thing everyday.

Day668 - it takes a special voice to be able sing/scream like that. not my kind of music but i can appreciate the skill the band has

Interesting instrumentation throughout. Super cringe vocals. Nice consistency and length

This is not my thing, so I can't really like it, but I can tell that they're good at what they do. And they were from Des Moines? Hilarious!

hä wiso find ich das recht geil? ähm? so s groovt d scratches passed huere guet. d riffs slapped (aso in sic jetz). eyeless au cooli bridge irgendwie (glaub s isch d bridge). isch da domols chraaank schockierend gsi? ha etz bitz glost ohni notize mache und wemmer nöd mega ufmerksam isch chunt scho nöd so viel übere ussert lärm. aber s isch trotzdem huuuere kreativ findi. und er singt clean no geil. aber s isch mit de ziit en rechte lupf zums lose. git es 3 well ich finds kreativ. aber streng.

Great instrumentals, mainly the drumming. Unfortuntately the problem with numetal is the often cringy, edgy lyrics.

I can't stand screaming vocalists. It just grates. Otherwise, there's some decent music happening. Great drumming. I'll never be a fan, but there's a modicum of inventiveness here.

Fav: Surfacing Least Fav: Tattered & Torn Is bro ok? He’s been screaming for an hour straight

Hva skjer med filteret over gitaren i Spit It Out feks?

I'd never heard knowingly Slipknot. Now I have. Ho-hum. Edgy lyrics, pretty good music. I prefer System of a Down.

very shouty

Just not my thing

Slipknot’s debut is a raw blast of aggression, blending nu-metal riffs, chaotic percussion, and unrelenting vocals. While songs like Wait and Bleed stand out, the album’s intensity can feel messy and uneven. A powerful but flawed introduction.

I recall liking slipknot more than this. Badass metal drumming though

Matt Long needs to get credit for introducing me to Slipknot many years ago.

It's solid Nu-Metal, but that's not really a genre for me. Plus, there's not a whole lot of music like this on the list, so if doing multiple albums in a day (like I will do to try and catch up for days I miss), it takes a minute to get into a mindset that is actually able to listen to this. After a couple of songs, I stopped focusing on this album and just let it play in the background of my day, and I think that's all this album really deserves from me. I'm just not a nu-metal fan. It's solid, and does a lot of different things (despite being pretty distinctly nu-metal), so I have no qualms with it making this list or having to listen to it. If you're a nu-metal fan, you either love this album or, at minimum, recognize its importance to the genre. Favorite Song(s): Eyeless

This is one of those bands I've been aware of forever but never really given any time to. I knew they weren't the kind of metal I'm that in to. That said... not bad. And the drummer on this album is on FIRE.

Still not entirely my style of metal but I enjoyed this a bit more than some of their later albums. I can see why people liked this.

The first few songs I thought were really good, 5 stars even. As the album goes on and the songs devolved more and more into samey angry screaming and repeating fuck over and over my score got lower and lower. Probably wouldn't relisten but it wasn't awful, just skip the last 5 songs or so

not their best songs but some good gems

nice enough

Perfect music to psych me up before entering Costco on a Sunday afternoon. 3.5 rounded down because although I do have a Songs to Scream in Your Car playlist, I am usually not in the mood for this amount of unbridled rage. I really did like this album though!

1 for lyrics, 4 for musical ability.

Not for me but it is for different sad teens who are pretending to be angry

Oh baby. Nu-Metal of the aggressive kind. Whereas Linkin Park provided the soundtrack to hundreds of kids tearily looking out the window at their manicured suburb, this album? This was for kids who would leave home before school and come home at sundown covered in mud and strange viscous fluids. I don’t claim to be of the latter demographic, but I certainly have always appreciated more gritty art. From my memory, this album contains the obligatory DJ scratches, but also sounds like a fire drill at a midnight screening of some found footage horror film in the Midwest somewhere. I hope my memory isn’t failing me. Hand me my walrus mask. I am the newest Slipknot member. I play the washboard and the ol’ string and stick. New album, Big Hoss Hoedown, coming 2027. 74261700027 - I wrote all that shit for an intro? At least it’s a cool sample. (sic) - Ehhh I forgot that the vocalist kind of sucks. Too fast and aggro. The type of guy who gets a jiu-jitsu lesson from his family for Christmas because they worry that without it, he’ll shoot up the school. The riffs make up for it though. Excellent rage and a darker atmosphere than 99% of the mainstream nu-metal of the time. Eyeless - This is a song I’ve returned to in the convening years, but as a wee youngster this one hit so incredibly hard. It felt like I really wasn’t supposed to be listening to it. The edgy swears, the talking about “killing,” the whispered passages. It’s camp, and over the top, but it still rips. Not to mention that sick breakdown. My hat has been thusly turned up and to the side. There it shall remain. Wait and Bleed - Was this one in Rockband or something? It’s so immediately recognizable. Decent track. Surfacing - Brilliant lyrics (this is the sarcasm portion of the review). Yeah this is a little too dumb for an adult brain. Well, at least this adult brain. There are about 60 million YouTube commenters (Horns from *insert place here*) who would disagree. Riffs remains sick. Spit It Out - I am very much beginning to tire of ol Corey here. That’s his name right? His amateur MMA vibe is causing my eyes to roll. This is a catchy song to be fair, but it leans more on the DJ side of things, and almost borders industrial music. The lyrics and vocals kinda suck though. Tattered & Torn - What I initially believed to be a cool intro just turned out to be the whole song. This feels like one that could’ve been left on the cutting room floor. A true lowlight. Purity - We’ve got ourselves another song! It’s alright. More of the scream/sing formula that would become more pronounced as this genre evolved. Me Inside - We’re about to get deep. The melodic vocals are honestly a nice change of pace. I was tired of listening to him hit the heavy bag in a TAPOUT shirt. This song is not good, but hey. Pace has changed. Note, that this doesn’t appear in all track listings of this album. WHY DO ALBUMS CHANGE AS TIME FKRS ON. IF YOU WANT TO ADD NEW SONGS, please release a new album, thank you. Liberate - That little hammer-on section at the end of that main riff almost reminds me of Evisceration Plague by Cannibal Corpse. That’s kinda cool. Prosthetics - The riffs continue to impress. As does the production in general. There is a lot going on in the background here, and it all feels clear, yet still raw. Without the repetition of the braindead lyrics, this is one of the better tracks on the record. No Life - Oh we’re ribbity rappin’ now. This group thrives in the more extreme moments. Despite the rap being “extremely”cringeworthy, I find myself drinking deeply from the oasis’ that are the hard-driving sections of this track. They’re very very good. Diluted - There are a lot of tracks here. It’s almost as if they’re becoming “diluted” in some way. A brave commentary on their own work. Only One - STEP INTO THE CAGE (onto my trampoline). MY MOM IS OUT OF TOWN AND IVE BEEN WATCHING NOTHING BUT BAS RUTTEN CLIPS ON THE NEW APP THAT IS YOUTUBE. Only one of us walks away. I believe that will be me, laughing at you. Scissors - Loooong close here. Wrap it up fellas. Eeyore - Man I don’t remember Eeyore being this angry. I suppose he’s been depressed for so long, it’s good to see the lil guy feeling something for a change. When you call a piece of art “childlike,” there is often an associated image of something innocent or whimsical. When you call a piece of art adolescent, it is almost always an insult and conjures images of immaturity, brash ignorance or outright stupidity. A lot of the lyrics on this project veer towards the adolescent side of things here. Now, as a teenager, this helped me get into more extreme music that I continue to discover to this day, but listening back, this didn’t quite stand up to the proverbial sands of time. There is a blatant rawbone stupidity that inspires every macho “FUCK YOU” that peppers the prose sheet of this project but I couldn’t help but be enthralled by some of it. The riffs and general atmosphere work, at elet down by the vocal delivery, but not enough for me to say I didn’t have a decent time here. 3 HIGHLIGHTS: (sic), Eyeless

It's a good album if this is your thing. Love the instrumentals. This album is not my thing, so I got kinda tired of it by the end. I understand I'm not who this was made for. That's ok.

Better than i thought

I never was a metal guy but if nu-metal had been the thing while I was coming up, I might have been a fan. Lots of low-key murmuring a la Deftones here along with Deftone repetitive riffs and effects, using the patented 90s quiet-loud-quiet formula. Not diminishing them though. They seem to have touched all the bases, sounding at points like Korn, above-mentioned Deftones, a little Incubus, maybe even a touch of Tool. However, 90% is unrelenting. It's high energy stuff. Maybe for workouts? Any band that tended towards a shoegaze vibe had a better chance of catching my ear and my money. Even screamed vocals can work if you're not 110% rage throughout the track, just ask Trent Reznor. Anyway, it's fine and I'd be equally likely to listen to Tool, i.e. not likely and wishing Clutch had come up in the algorithm.

I can indulge in some good rage-inducing music but at times this felt a bit one-note.

not my kinda music but good

Like the percussion and digital sounds. Want to watch live vids. Scurry

Yh Iowa really should’ve been the slipknot rep, you can tell the writers don’t know much about 2000’s heavy music with their picks for both this band and QOTSA. 3/5

The album wasn't bad, but I don't understand all the hype on Slipknot. The music is nothing really impressive, it's just some intense music that lacks of anything else.

Whew! This was a challenging album and I like that. To the many people who stated that they listened to one or two songs and then just rated the album poorly, fuck you. Just click “didn’t listen” and move on. It is okay to not like an album that you actually listened to, it is not okay to be dismissive and judgmental. This is powerful music that succeeds at exactly what the artists intended. The fact that a band could produce music this heavy and still break into the mainstream to the extent that Slipknot has is remarkable and a damn good reason for their debut album to fall on this list. Previously, I’d always dismissed Slipknot as being gimmicky, but giving this album my minimum two listens I started to see the appeal. There is no doubt this is powerful music. As a younger person, I followed the punk and punk-adjacent hardcore scene fairly closely. Perhaps because of this, I really appreciated the instrumentation on many of these tunes. The drumming is incredibly powerful. This combined with a sound signature that blends many different sub-genres make the music interesting. The growling vocals were not my thing and among the main reasons I found this album challenging, it is just too much. It was the times when the growls went away, either due to the exploration of different vocal styles of the rare moments when the music stood on its own that I appreciated the most. I can see why some people like these vocals, but it wasn’t for me.

This is my one-year anniversary album during this journey, and what a crazy experience it was. The lyrics were juvenile, the singing was chaotic, and the production sounded like it was produced in the 1970s. The only reason it's getting a rating this high is because Joey Jordison was one of the greatest drummers of all time. Favorite Track: "Prosthetics".

Early metal masterclass. Interesting arrangements and musical ideas. Killer drums.

Very raw emotionally, iconic heavy metal rythem, lyrics are unintelligible at points, but I think that's intentional. The words we are able to make out feel more impactful. I can see why people would call it edgy and tripe, but coming out of the emotional apathy that was the mid 90s, it answers a different anger (and I'll admit, angst) than what was around it generally. I think it's not my cup of tea for a full listen through, but to someone else I can absolutely understand if this album defined the musical tastes of a lot of my generation. Feels like an album full of singles, not sure if I could put this on a road trip and listen cover to cover. It does make me want to buy a drum kit and play the ever living shit out of it, the drums absolutely carry this for me.

Perhaps the best album the nu-metal craze ever spawned (this, Korn's debut or Sepultura's Roots). So that's a solid 3/5.

I like rock. I like hard rock. I do not like Slipknot.

I think authenticity is often what can make or break an album. Even if the music isn't my style, if the band is up there doing there thing without trying to sound any specific way or pander to any specific audience I can be won over to appreciate what they're doing. To my surprise I feel like the album Slipknot by Slipknot is exactly that. A couple of the nu metal songs with rapping / turn tables came off as a bit dated and cringy but the bulk of the hardcore metal shredding I thought sounded like a bunch of dudes laying it all on the line just playing their hardest. Their music is dense, intense, a little bit depressing and despite the image that I feel like alot of people would say is a gimmick, I feel like this album anyway, is authentic, late 90's boundary pushing, americana.

Jim Root's Guitar Moves interview was one of the most enlightening videos I've watched recently and helped me start looking at the fretboard differently. He seemed like a laid-back, down-to-earth kind of guy. I tried to listen to some Slipknot after watching that interview and their sound compared to the guy I watched in that interview were so diametrically opposed. I don't think I made it through a full song. When I originally had this album generated, I absolutely hated it. At the time I couldn't stand the angry screaming or the drumming. However, since it was generated, I've learned to appreciate harsher singing in metal music and have done a bit of a deep dive into the genre as a whole. With that in mind, I've decided to revisit some of the metal albums I initially passed on from the generated. Re-listening to Slipknot's debut now and I don't have such a negative reaction to it. The lyrics are still fairly cringy, but there's actually some really interesting experimental aspects and the drumming actually provides a really heavy, but solid groove throughout.

If one benefit of art is that it gives us a purer way than language to express emotion, i gotta admit: this kind of music does effectively capture the feeling of rage better than language or story does. 'To what end' is a question left unasked, but thats not necessarily the prerogative of the man wearing a scary demon mask and screaming MOTHERFUCKKKKKKKER in a cookie monster voice. Obviously this kind of music is an easy target. And even if I don't like this or identify with it in any way, I do have to admit, I respect it more than I thought I would. The drums are huge, almost Bonham like, and its fun to listen to how they hold all the chaos together. I was scared of all the slipknot kids in middle school. Thought they were up to no good. But I feel like I understand them a little better now. I wonder if this is how my 3 year old son feels when I won't let him have a popsicle and he gets so mad he tries to bite me. His heartbeat does feel like a double bass drum. One thing I can't get past is the screaming - we get it guys, you're mad. The music effectively conveys that. You don't need to scream to prove that point. It's just too much screaming. All that said, after listening to 6-7 songs of this while driving around, I got pretty worked up at a minivan that took too long to make a left hand turn in front of me. I screamed in my car, MAKE A MOVE YOU PUSSY. And, you know what? It was kinda fun.

So harsh, but it's a good shot of adrenaline if you're working out.

Perfectly fine album. Certainly didn't hate it or anything. Either 2 or 3 stars I'm not really sure.

It might help that I frequently don't understand lyrics that much the first time anyway, but I enjoyed this to a degree? I just can't get past the screamy delivery. But the actual instrumentals and whatnot under them, I would've liked a lot if they were isolated I think.

These boys are weird. Enjoyed parts of it, not sure I would put it with the best albums on this list though

I only ever listened to Duality over the years, which I always had a soft spot for. I enjoyed this and All Hope Is Gone much more than I expected, and probably wouldn't have listened to them at all if not for this challenge. Neither are an easy listen though, and I would argue that one Slipknot album would have been sufficient. There's some great songs on here, particularly (sic), Eyeless, and Only One. I found a lot of the middle tracks a bit repetitive though, and the lyrics (and the band in general) will always remind me of those "edgelord" type teenagers I knew when I was young. Great drumming overall though, lots of cool experiments with different styles.

I have a distinct memory of being about 12 years old and hearing Wait and Bleed for the first time. It was by far the heaviest song I'd ever heard and it honestly mostly just sounded like noise. But it opened my eyes to a whole genre of music I was barely aware existed. As a metal fan, I can't rate this album too low for that reason alone. On its own merits I still think it's decent enough. The rap and DJ parts sound extremely dated and the general sound is pretty basic, but Corey's vocals are excellent and there are some catchy songs in there.

The screaming, and the transitions to melodic singing, are impressive - the bars-spitting not so much. I love the fast pace of it all, but it loses me with its aggrieved aggression. It’s just not my vibe in the end.

It's not my usual cuppa tea, that's for sure, but I do appreciate the skills required to sound like they do (especially with the vocals). And part of the fun is to hear music I wouldn't normally choose. Come on boys, lets make some NOISE!!! And why not...

The album starts well with the promising onslaught of Eyeless and slight more relaxed Wait and Bleed but then, for that this was different/new/interesting/out-there at the time, it descends into a repetition of these new ideas which quickly starts to lose our interest. On this debut album it feels like the band are still trying to hone their craft and later albums feel more cohesive and polished

I do like Slipknot; Corey Taylor's vocal range and Clown/Tortilla's immense drumming combo! As always, you have to be in the mood for it. Wait and Bleed is the obvious highlight of the album, the rest is fine, but not an album I actively seek out.

Although we *did* get Limp Bizkit earlier, and I now see we'll eventually get Korn as well, I'm honestly more than a bit surprised that Slipknot made the cut to be in this collection. (But a very odd coincidence that I just read a reference to Slipknot as an influence on this (modern) Greenland band Sound of the Damned....) I know they made waves in the rock-is-destroying-our-children crowd, and they're definitely not the worst of the 90s/2000s death/nu-metal generation (and certainly better than either Limp Bizkit or Korn), but they're also not all that interesting musically, frankly. The drums are the best part of their sonic onslaught, and they--and apparently producer Ross Robinson--captured a believable live sound with the album (and I think they were known for impressive live shows). There weren't too many tracks that stood out, although I enjoyed "Surfacing" and "No life" more than most, and the Shining-inspired video for "Spit it out" was...weird but compelling (that track also has a bit of a Linkin Park/Rage Against the Machine connection, as does "Me inside", which apparently was the replacement for the "Frail limb nursery"/"Purity" tracks that were pulled shortly after the album released). I don't entirely fault the project for including Slipknot, but as a former metalhead (more from the 80s than Slipknot's generation), it's kind of embarrassing to recognize that most metal bands (old-school or nu/newer) have really limited and stunted range, especially in the theme/lyrics department. And what a shame that this collection *doesn't* include what was probably the most interesting, thoughtful and talented metal-ish band from the later 90s/2000s, Disturbed.

I just don’t think I’m angry enough for this one, by I ain’t knocking it. It’s good, but not for me. 3/5

Somehow better than when I first listened at 13. The pinnacle of what nu metal had to offer.

Joey's drumming really shines and makes this album great.

Of all the nü-metal, Slipknot’s kitchen sink approach works best. Only a few tracks by System of a Down come close to this high water mark for this sub genre. 3.4 stars rounded down.

Relentless metal

The clown is correct.

For so long I never gave this band a chance. Just look at these guys... how can anyone take this shit seriously? Did they meet in hot topic? Yet, I love the Misfits, which makes me a total hypocrite because they're just as silly. Anyway, as a metal fan, it was inevitable that a few of their songs would work their way into my algorithm and boy do they have some nasty riffs. They definitely went from slipknot-for-me to slipknot-bad.

The metal snobs hated them because of the gimmicky masks. It's a great way to open doors. The music is good enough to keep them open. They were a nu-metal band at the time, but definitely on the heavy end of the range. If you expect something like Linkin Park or Limp Bizkit, that's not it. It has more in common with serious heavy bands like Fear Factory, Pantera and Sepultura with some other influences thrown in the mix and a DJ. I like their newer records better. Favorite song: wait and bleed.

Love the energy, but I still don't like the genre too much. Very high 3, but not quite a 4 for me

A typical example of nu metal, with all of the distinctive attributes of the genre. Is nu metal the peak of musicality and metal as a whole? Objectively, no. Is it one of the steps in it inevitable evolution? Yes. This album leans more towards commercial genres and isn't really that heavy or extreme. You can find better examples of the genre, some bands do the angry teen routine better than others. The album tries to be aggressive, but doesn't accomplish that fully, instead coming of as badly produced and sloppy at times. Lyrics are typical of the genre - angry, juvenile and about hating everybody. The highlights for me are the drums for sure, alongside occasional great riffs. Would give it 2.5 if I could.

I would have liked this a lot more in my younger years. It's too angry to fit my current preferences. I'd been married for three years and was advancing in my career when this album was released, so it was completely off my radar. I don't hate it but would only listen to it if my kids happen to cue it up. There are definately some fun ideas here, but again I'm not that angry about anything at this point in my life to get any enjoyment from it.

I like a few slipknot songs but I had never heard this album. It was too long poorly produced and mixed. If I was an angry 14 year old I would probably like it a lot more. It had great potential but didn’t climb above mediocre

Really did not like Slipknot's other album on this list, but I actually kind of enjoyed this? For early era nu metal, it's pretty good. Granted there is a lot more screaming than I really care for, and a lot of the songs did start to sound the same after awhile. My main gripe with Slipknot is that their lead singer has a really great voice when he actually sings, so I'm always wanting more of that in the end. This album is a 2.5 for me, but I honestly have to round up because giving it just 2 stars seems too low.

lost my glasses while i was listening to this one 👎👎

I appreciate the music but have never really been onboard with the screaming type of singing. That keeps it at a 3 for me.

love the percussion but find it hard to stay with the relentless production heaviness. melodies peek through more regularly than i expect tho making it a treasure hunt.

I can see how it influenced bands like Linkin Park but its just a lot of yelling on its own.

Not my thing but probably great if it is your thing

Solid entry to numeral genre. Some good metal songs, some forgettable. Wait and bleed is such in my head.

This brought back a lot of memories - as a raging middle-schooler in rural Indiana, I felt that it spoke to me at the time. It is probably one of the better examples of late 90s metal (or even nu-metal) conventions, and serves as a guidepoint for where the culture was. I feel like Slipknot was the most extreme and hardest example of metal at the time, and really did put other contemporaries (such as Limp Bizkit) to shame. Unless you are a metalhead, its not really an enjoyable listen.

Didn’t realize how much of a nu-metal sound this already had in that time. I’m infinitely entertained by metal, but I tend to automatically phase out the lyrics, or mishear them to comical effect. This was great! (Liberate bananas!) Also the drums sound very tribal and organic at times, very clean too. Beautiful! 3.5

The drummer is the star in my book. Also, I feel that there is quite a bit of musical creativity that is, unfortunately, overwhelmed by the screammo.

its okay aber würds nit noamal hören glaubi

3.5/5. Pretty cool debut but nu metal just doesn’t hold up.

Stupid fun, much better than the previous album of theirs. I feel the cringe and edge are so over the top it becomes fun again

I remember when these guys came out I kind of thought they were a little gimmicky. I was into 80s and early 90s metal, Megadeth, Metallica, Pantera, Slayer etc., but these guys' costumes kind of threw me off and never really listened to them much. Hearing this years later, they have a lot of energy, tons of thrash and a little groove. Nothing really stands out to me on this album as a track though, seems more like a jam band.
