Reviews (page 4 of 7)

I think it does what it does very well. Its a ha4d listen but I admire it's guile !!!

heard this album a couple times in the past, but i'll listen again for a refresher favs: (sic), eyeless, wait and bleed, spit it out, liberate, eeyore drums definitely are the the best part of this album, same with all their other releases i'm really surprised how harshly this is being rated here tbh. it's not perfect, but i don't think this was nearly as awful as some of these reviews say it is ⭐️⭐️⭐️

Not for me but pleased for this challenge to make me listen to the whole album. Assume this is intentionally ‘accessible’ which is why they went more mainstream than most.

Such a good album. Not my go-to genre but good for the occasional listen.

I enjoy heavy metal and some of the experimental sounds Slipknot does here. Some of the sounds they get out of their guitar are unlike anything I've ever heard. Wait and Bleed and Spit it Out are solid songs. But there are many songs that just don't land for me. Too much screaming without interesting instrumentation to balance it out.

I'm not really into this at all, but I'll give them some credit for inventing (or popularizing?) "Nu Metal" - that's something. On a side note, I do like Corey Taylor.

I prefer my metal more atmospheric, but this album is good. Still, the instrumentation is, in my ears, the sonic equivalent of a dry cracker going down your throat. 6.5/10 Fave track: Liberate

Okay, not super my thing.

Just the right side of this type of metal to be listenable as an album.

3.5 stars. Really have to be in a specific mood to get into nu metal. But as far as the genre goes, this is pretty good and definitely goes hard. Beginning of the album (tracks 2-4) are the strength, then it really tails off and feels like filler with some real duds: "Spit It Out" is super cheesy (worst of 2000's rap-rock nu-metal). "Prosthetics" and "Get This" both repetitive and annoying.

Brutal, blistering metal. I was definitely banging my head to a lot of this. Although some of it, like the punishing assault of “Tattered & Torn,” pushed the limits of what I could tolerate. The drums are amazing. In addition to driving the energy of most of these songs, the drums occasionally have some playful moments that break from traditional metal drumming. And the riffs are killer. There’s no denying the skill these guys have. Some cool genre mixing here too (including some record scratches and rapping). Keeps the music fresh. Slipknot continues to impress me (this is their second album on the list so far) but I can’t imagine I’ll ever want to listen to this again. It’s just too brutal.

Actually, fine

My appreciation for heavy metal is gradually developing

I’m not the target demographic here - ie, a teen boy - but damn this shreds. It is far too noisy and unrelenting for me to listen to the whole thing in a sitting, or probably ever revisit, but I do appreciate it. The singer/screamer transforms astonishingly from a rather nice regular voice into the most ragged screams you’ve ever heard. And, he even pulls off the rap/rock parts. I also liked the production with some electronic elements.

Oh yes, it is over the top. But that is exactly what it wants to be, right. Apart from the terrible production (loudness war at its worst), this is a pretty genuine record, one that helped shape a new genre - a genre that I dislike for the most - but you can't blame the for the cheap copycats. I don't care much about the quality of the lyrics in here, because the lyrics don't give a * on being great. Of course, this is all about a very limited period in some people's lives, but who to judge and blame for such experiences? I favor this record and sometimes do listen to it, even as a grumpy 55ish. What would we be if we did not allow ourselves to remind us of who we were and how lucky we are we didn't end up where this one proposes. If it weren't for the production, I would give it a better rating, but I think the loudness muddles the sound and takes away from the aggression.

Metal rudo, no es de mi total aceptacion

much of the material in this album sounds like a mix between system of a down, faith no more and 2000’s era slayer. vocals often sounding like a psychotic person off their meds. sense of desperation is a common theme. vocalist often switches from “clean” vocals to “harsh” vocals within songs. certainly a wild ride and i would have to be in the right mood to listen to this.

I don't like Slipknot but they have some fun tracks. I never was into the Nu metal thing and, while they are an actual metal band, that noxious influence is still present. I will say that some of the lyricism is wry and genuinely fun. The beats are undeniable. Maybe I was not in the mood for what is tantamount to an auditory panic attack? I mean, it is a solid greatest hits album.

Nu metal kind of got the worst of all worlds. It doesn't have the dark atmosphere or the songwriting of classic metal; it doesn't have the energy of early '90s metal; nor does it have the raw aggression and heaviness of modern metal. What does it have to compensate? I don't know actually, and this album certainly doesn't make things clearer. That being said, I personally don't have a strong opinion on nu metal and just find most metal from that era to be kind of mid, Slipknot included. But I recognize that there are also good things that came out of the nu metal era, like Deftones or System of a Down. Nu metal seems to be treated as this bastard child of metal by much of the internet community, something you don't like but with whose existence you have to cope. For that matter, Slipknot being the poster child of the genre, it's hard to find any sort of civil discussion about this album, or any of their discography, really. For some reason, people seem to be more concerned with what is the age limit after which you're not allowed to enjoy Slipknot; whether or not you're a "poser" for liking them; or can you even consider nu metal as a whole "metal" (because that's an argument that exists, somehow). But since nothing is going to stop children (be it mental or literal) from airing out their insecurities by stating that they definitely, without a shadow of a doubt didn't like a popular thing, let’s just not worry about any of this shit and talk about the music from Slipknot's self-titled, because this, at least in my humble opinion, is what music reviews are for. I actually was pleasantly surprised with this album initially. Although simplistic, the first half had plenty of catchy riffs and lyrics. But that quickly started falling apart towards the second half. The riffs became monotonous and repetitive, and the vocals lost all of their charm. It is obvious that they just ran out of ideas after some time. This album just didn't have to be this long. Why commit to a 55-minute album when you don't have enough material? Just cutting this album to 35-40 minutes would've made it noticeably better (although all Slipknot albums tend to be on the longer side, for some reason). It also seems to have some problems with the mix. The guitars on some tracks sound overly compressed and sort of distant. Overall, although I can't call this good music, I didn't hate it. The first half was pretty fun, but the second half has some boring songs and definitely drags the experience down. The people calling this unlistenable garbage are definitely overreacting, though—it's not that bad.

It’s okay. Iowa is where they really took off for me.

Great tunes but overstays its welcome some.

742617000024- 5 sic- 5 eyeless- 4 wait and bleed- 4 surfacing- 4 spit it out- 3 tattered and torn- 4 me inside- 4 liberate- 4. i keep thinking hes saying banana and that kinda makes it more fun prosthetics- 5 no more this is what the suicide squad joker listens to as he gets his forehead tattoo touched up

In my teenage years I listened to a lot of Slipknot. This album contains some iconic songs. Yes, they are heavy, but I enjoy sometimes this kind of music.

As much as I hate nu metal this wasn’t terrible. Not a whiny as Linkin Park or the rest I was actually able to channel my inner 14 year old and bop to some of it.

Finns några plus och några minus. Först ut det dåliga. Det är ofattbart töntig musik. Alltså vansinnigt töntigt. Sen gillar jag intensiteten och rytmen. Det är bättre än slayer som var full fräs bara för att.

Good, albeit this is a genre I much preferred when I was younger. The drums are always elite on Slipknot projects.

Bit monotonous

Rating: 7/10 Loved the energy, not so much the rapping.

Listened to this to death back in the day. Yeah… I’m older and wiser now but who cares - this is still a lot of fun!

líklega ekki fyrir mig. smellirnir smella.

Holds up surprisingly well for what it is: pissing off your parents and scaring your cat for nearly 30 years 😧.

Another great mystery on this list is why on earth it needs to include two albums by Slipknot. I received another one (the appropriately titled 'All Hope is Gone') only a few weeks ago and was actually surprised by how much I disliked it. Nu Metal had some occasional successes but still generally just feels cringeworthy to me. Having said that, Slipknot's debut is a bit better. It's still sounds like an angsty adolescent trying to imitate Cookie Monster on meth, and I can only roll my eyes at some of the lyrics. But some of the music is actually pretty decent. Particular praise goes to the drummer who's really carrying the album. Give me a different vocalist and cut out some of the filler, samples and scratches, and this would be a pretty good album. It's at least a hell of a lot better than the other album on this list.

An assault to the ears but strangely hypnotic

It's good and probably influential, but I don't feel like I enjoy this any more than any similar metal. Besides that, my enjoyment of this style of metal is very much mood-dependant. Favorite track: "Wait and Bleed"

Not really a metal guy. But I really appreciate the musicianship. I can recognize how talented they are. I mean metal drummers are just insanely talented.

Do you know what not too bad

Fun to listen to Slipknots first album after hearing so much about them for so long but never engaging. Some solid songs, but it all blended together.

Ahhh another album that fell victim to the late 90s/early 2000s loudness wars. I don't really know why all the producers of that time suddenly thought, "you know what would make this album sound really great? If we just pushed all the faders on the console up all the way to make it sound like shit!" This album does belong on this list, it had a massive impact on music for a while. I feel like this was one of the decently heavy albums to actually break through to the mainstream. Everyone heard this record when it came out and, although it's not really innovative, it was new for a lot of people who had never heard heavier music before. I knew a lot of people who got into heavier music that they never would have listened to because of this album. And it's got to be said that the drums on this album (though terrible sounding because of the production) are great and often praised highly, but are perhaps a little too busy. Joey Jordison should get a ton of credit but I feel like he should have backed off just a bit. I'm not really sure how to rate this. I mean the music is good, the lyrics are dumb, it's well played, horribly produced. I hate the silly costume gimmick. And why the hell are there like 6,000 people in this band? I mean a trio or 4 piece sounding like this wouldn't be unexpected, why do they need so many people? Important to a whole generation of people. Probably hated by anyone over the age of 45. And dammit it makes me feel old that this album is 25 years old now. 3.5/5 but rounding down because it isn’t good enough to round up.

Ja, ist hart der Heavy Metal. Kannte die Band nicht aber sie hat durchaus Qualität.

Sounds like middle school. Wait and Bleed and Spit it Out are the best on here. The rest is okay. 3/5

As one half of iconic British duo, Houmous and Chutney, I know a thing or two about making music that isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. I remember back in 82 when Ray Serrano wrote in Rolling Stone ‘Ken Chutney sure as hell doesn’t care what anyone thinks. He’ll make his music regardless. Perhaps even regardless of what band mate Len Houmous thinks’ 3.3

Loud and noisy aggression. I could barely understand what was being said in the screamy parts. Standout tracks: Wait and Bleed, Surfacing

I still think the story's real. It fucked our whole world up when we read it. Can you imagine a girl being buried in a box and have all this lecherous bullshit drip down on her from this guy? It just hurts your head. Tottahan tuo.. Tottahan tuo...

Run of the mill late 90s/early 2000s overly edgy nu metal. There's some good drum and guitar work though. Wait and Bleed is quite an enjoyable and iconic (for Slipknot) song for what it is though.

Good energy, but I'm not a fan of the modern distorted vocals trend. Give me Judas Priest or Iron Maiden or Black Sabbath any day...

I wanted to like it more than I did. It was tiring to listen to straight through.

Bon p'tit criage.

For a debut album its pretty good, they come out strong out the gate. It gets pretty tiresome in the back half, and the length doesnt do it any favors, how much screaming is too much? Here's your answer.

Some very groovy tunes on here but the screaming got tiresome by the back half. I enjoyed a lot more of it than I was expecting and that’s always nice!

Though the horror-show aesthetics might suggest otherwise, Slipknot's debut reveals a band more interested in musical complexity than mere shock value.

Edgy as fuck brooooo. Bit too noisy for my taste but quite an important album.

Surprisingly enjoyable. Best song: Wait and Bleed This is a 3.5 rounded down, pretty fun--could be a bit grating at points

I haven't listened to this album in more than 20 years and it takes me back to a past time. I love the switching of the vocals from guttural yelling to singing. Wait and Bleed and Spit It Out. They sure do like their drums. And I like their drums too. This isn't something I reach for, but it's something that I like knowing that it's there.

5/10…nu-rap metal

i mean okay like listen i like slipknot for the most part other than my ex bf was obsessed with them and now i hate them (i dont) ALSO there are way better metal bands EVEEN nu metal bands i have always found some of slipknot's lyrics to be a little cringe like why areyou trying sooo hard to seem edgy idk it def does come off as very childish but hey at the end of the day this album is still fun and they are one of the first metal bands i ever liked soososososoo it isnt entirely bad. SCISSORS IS DEF A STANDOUT 8 minutes of perfection (kinda) but yeah def not as bad as everyone says it is (in my opinion)

Deilig med litt metall, men va egentlig bare heilt ok

I like heavy metal, but I like it more when it leans toward hard rock. This album is an all-out assault on the senses. It's pretty good but I would prefer it in smaller doses. Is this a good band? I think they are a very good nu-metal band. Overall not really my schtick.

For some reason, I never got into Slipknot as a kid, even though I listened to a fair bit of nu metal etc. The best part is the drumming. The rest, I could take it or leave it. Reminds me of a not-as-interesting version of Snot, actually, with some SOAD thrown in here and there.

Really loved diluted and wait and bleed. The rest was ok.

Mediocre vocals on every level (rapping, metal screams, melodies), but some killer drumming and interestign musical choices

Would have loved it if it weren’t for the singing

I wasn't looking forward to this, and I wasn't disappointed. It's proficient - but not for me

If I’m ever in the mood for heavy metal, this might be the type I’d listen to: some variety to the yelling.

Noteworthy songs - 808080808 Magical Dream - Kinda catchy synth, but the rest is bland. Ancodia - Good background noise. Cobra Bora - Actually kind of cool, reminds me of Bomberman Hero. Pacific 202 - N64 vibes, but melody isn't great. Donkey Doctor - Nothing too special, weird ending. 808080808 - Really cool beginning. A little slow in the middle but stays interesting enough. Sunrise - Nothing remarkable. The Fat Shadow - Eerie. Very short.

I'm sure there is more to this album than just very heavy riffing, growling and some very good drumming, but it is eluding me a little. It's OK, but I'm not going back to it.

I would be tempted to give this one a two, but the drums are just so good it has to be bumped up. Highlights were Eyeless, Wait and Bleed, and Only One.

Ooft, this is Slipknot!

Not my style. I'm sure it’s great.

Like Leatherface and Michael Myers have previously shown us, a pair of coveralls and a mask are creepy as fuck. The drums and percussion are standout on this album. This album could've been streamlined to 10 tracks and said everything it had to say. Mostly Nu Metal sounds like a heavier more aggressive version of Faith No More's The Real Thing album to me. This is a fine album but not one I'll revisit any time soon.

I like this album, it really brought me back to a very specific time in my life and I have found that at my core I might still be that disgruntled and disaffected youth when you strip away the years and the gray hairs!

I like the use of drum samples with a live kit. The lyrics get too angsty for my taste. The drummer is very proficient with drumming and constantly is doing insane fills. There are points that I wish this album had contrasting sections to the endless onslaught of their sound as my ears got tired of their sound.

Joey Jordison var for vild! Fuld smadder!

Ku ærlig talt li det her MEGET mere end jeg havde regnet med! Klart, det er ret dumt, men de MENER det virkelig

Pretty good album. Very loud and heavy but definitely good to start a mosh pit

Damn, that a lotta screaming, hope their throats are okay, but hey, I liked it- kinda!

Not their best album. Half the songs are fun and the rest are pretty samey and forgettable

Not really my jam.

ВОЗВРАТ НА КОЛОНКИ. Очень жесткий металл, почти Ministry

If I'm being honest, much of this was an uphill battle against the inner 14 year old version of me that couldn't fucking stand this shit, and trying to remind myself that I had a newfound appreciation for bands like Sepultura and even Limp Bizkit, and so maybe there was something here for you. It halfway worked, these guys definitely wore their influences on their sleaves to start with which I think is kind of endearing, although unfortunately the rapping has just never worked for me and never will. There were some more psychedelic sounding passages on here that I thought were really cool and wanted more of, and I kinda loved it when Corey just made weird as fuck noises I thought it was hilarious but totally fit the vibe, kinda like the sound effects on Funkadelic albums. But yea ultimately this album just really underwhelmed me a bit and I constantly found myself wishing I was listening to the band that inspired each song instead of that song. While I give almost exclusively 1s or 5s to albums because I pretty much enjoy it or I don't, this album gets a 3, there's something in it, but it's just not present enough, maybe that comes later in their, I should probably check.

Some of these songs I can appreciate, but in general this thrash genre I’m not super keen on, though if I had to choose this would be the slipknot album I’d throw on. Just fun enough without being ‘try hard’ in my opinion. 2.8

I actually didnt like it enough for a 3 but the fact that it wasnt some generic shit UK punk or 70s slop made me be okay with listening to it despite of this

Better than I anticipated it being, would listen to this again.

I need to lie down.

I've liked some of slipknot's stuff, so looking forward to this one. It taps into my nu-metal teenage years, can't say it's something I'd seek out these days. Def have to be in the right mood to hit this now. The drums are freaking fantastic, great energy throughout. 3* (docking because scissors/eeyore was a little too rough for me). Highlights: sic, wait and bleed

Não é o tipo de coisa que eu curto ouvir. Mas consigo entender o porquê de ser tão popular

This album has moments of heavy metal brilliance smashed in between a cacophony of nu-metal guitar crunchiness, turntable scratches, and almost unbearable scream shouting. There's a lot of unchecked anger in this album and listening to it first thing on a Thursday morning has put me in an unexpectedly bad mood while simultaneously making me irrationally angry.

Definitely a few songs on here that I really liked. Prosthetic having a very unique sound. Most of it sounds very similar though.

Just because something is not for me doesn't mean it doesn't belong on a list like this. I've served my time in the Metal Kingdom™ and mostly view Slipknot as a pop-poseur band that took an existing genre and didn't add anything more to it than some weird costumes and makeup. BUT, their impact on music and metal in particular is solidified and that came from the heavy lifting that their freshman release did. NüMetal is terrible, but Slipknot flys the flag high and proud. 3/5.

Iconic nu-metal debut. Clearly better than the other later Slipknot album listed in Dimery's book. I don't have much to say about this record--at least nothing original--so I'm gonna take a (very small) page out of the positive reviews topping this section, and sum up what they say instead (not taking into account the unambiguously *negative* takes here, as they only signal those other reviewers can't "get" anything even only *resembling* nu-metal anyway). PROS: - Drums / percussion work / breakbeats slap HARD. - The sound is rough around the edges, but the overall energy and creepy atmospheric touches in each individual track never disappoint. - This debut is less of a mixed bag than the band's later LPs (either unnecesarily stifling, or too metal FM-oriented). - "Wait And Bleed" is a phenomenal highlight with a stellar vocal hook. - Just like Korn (or even better, Deftones), Slipknot pioneered a specific sub-strand of metal that clearly revitalized the whole umbrella genre, for better or for worse. CONS: - The "white rapping" (as some reviewer labelled it) can sound cringey. Even more so today. - The scratches are maybe one extra gimmick the band could have left aside without ever ruining the rest of the music, as "gimmicky" as its other elements are themselves. - The album goes on for too long, as "cohesive" as it is. - Like all horror films--which is clearly the cinematic template Slipknot had in mind to create their "musical universe"--this album risks coming off as dumb, gratuitous and corny. It's hard to reproach the band with taking such a risk given who they are and what they want to accomplish. After all, everyone can enjoy the cheap thrills of a wild ride at Six Flags once in a while. But 'cheap' is bound to be the word that's on the back of your mind when you listen to this sort of music. At least if you're a little serious about music and songwriting... - This record aims at a target demographic that doesn't really exist anymore, since all those "troubled" teenagers are now in their forties (or very close). Imagining people of that age *seriously* listening to this kind of aggro sound today seems a bit daft, at least on paper. More power to those middle-aged folks if they do, though. The thing is, given what it is, "pure" nu-metal clearly had a peremption date written in capital letters on its forehead. And as iconic as it is, this record is no exception to this rule of thumb. Exceptions: Deftones, once again. Too eerie and stylistically ambiguous from the get-go to be pigeonholed like that... End grade: 3/5. My grading for this list of albums is quite specific, though. If I had to grade this album for what it does for its intended audience, I would grade it 8/10 (5 for general musicianship and "cultural" impact + 3 for its genuine artistic merits). However, I highly doubt there will be enough room for this debut in my own list. Which does not mean it shouldn't be remembered as an important milestone for that ephemeral sub-strand of metal. If you had to take *all music genres and subgenres* into account to establish which records are essential for each of them, you would probably need to mention MORE than 1001 LPs. Nu-metal is a "dead" subgenre that doesn't have much influence today anyway--except for a few recent niche hyperpop records, oddly enough... But I guess that's a story for another time, kiddies. Number of albums left to review: 241 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 329 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 195 (including this one, maybe?) Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many other records are more important to me): 242

Interesting but way too heavy for me

Good, but too exhausting. 3/5

I don't know how you scream like that for an hour but somehow they manage. Is it metal? Very. Would I subject my ears to it again. Nope.

I loved this when I was 13. That's all.

Læti og djöfulgangur. Fíla þetta mjög vel í vissum aðstæðum. Eins og t.d. þegar ég er að glósa upp úr námsefni eða þarf að einbeita mér.

Was okay. Very heavy but little songwriting.

Drumming is absolutely mad, but my goodness is this a teen record for sure. Love it.

Crazy good drumming

This is the music your parents warned you not to listen to.

It’s just not for me. The lyrics that are intelligible are cringey and the music is all much of a muchness. I switched it off as soon as I realised it had reached the different mixes. The masks thing was always lost on me too. Music for teenage boys. I can appreciate the percussion though and it’s sad what happened to Joey Jordison

second slipknot album for my ears and it happens to be their debut. this album is more unrefined and less commercial than all hope is gone. their music is still very metal, but their self-titled has such a distorted style and it's unnerving in the best way. the production quality isn't as high as it could be, but since it does add to the distortion, i'll allow it. the screaming vocals in the metal genre aren't for everyone, but i've never minded. but if you ignore them, musically this album is just as solid as all hope is gone. that says a lot about slipknot that they had the talent and ability right in the beginning.

Slipknot was not only a key player in the nu-metal wave, but one of the longer lasting acts; whereas many of the nu-metal bands more or less faded from popularity, Slipknot has managed to stay relevant and in the spotlight. They had their schtick (both musically and visually) down pat from this debut album, and while I feel like they have some more polished work that I tend to favor over this album, this album still has some of their most iconic work on it, notably "Wait and Bleed" and "Spit It Out". I feel like the mixing/production on this album could have been more polished, but I'll chock it up to humble beginnings, even for a band that has developed as much renown as Slipknot has. A fun listen, either way!

I bought this album in 1999 as a teenager and could not get enough of it. I was a metalhead from Caracas, Venezuela, who was moved by the adrenaline that songs by Korn and Deftones irradiated. I did not know a lot of English, so I could not understand a lot of the lyrics -besides the now-universal "fuck" or the Wait and Bleed's chorus. All was fine and dandy. Now, I am 40 with children. I am not as mad as before and know a little of English. I pressed play again after 25 years... and was a little disappointed. Yes, the energy is still there. The album's first half rocks hard, but the second, not so much. But my gosh, the lyrics! Extremely childish, monolayered, and simple. Corey sang great, but all he did was whine! Like a pissed teenager that cursed another kid in his class. Most songs are about how wicked, dangerous, or sad I am or why "you" (talking to an imaginary adversary, like a kid fantasizing) should go the fuck up. It's lame. Well, Slipknot (album), thanks for the memories, I guess.

Too 90s, too thrashy, too screamy. Still kinda slaps

Actually didn't mind this

This one...wow it is a moment in time that was really incredible when it came out, but hasn't really held up past that. This is a product of it's time with some hits. I have the original pressing which has track most of never heard before. However, despite this commentary, it isn't awful and is very well produced. But there are better albums after this. 7.3/10

I quite like "eyeless". Overall, it's a bit shouty, and seems very much "problem teenager" in its outlook and execution. That being said, the drumming is pretty good. Scratching is so very late 90s and it has not dated well. I'd prefer it overall to be a little bit more doom metally and less numetally, and I absolutely won't be listening to it again, but it isn't totally awful.

It certainly seems solid for what it is. Angry, traumatizing pain screamed into a microphone over aggressive, fast, heavy, thumping music. There's only a few times that they try to make approachable choruses (ala linkin park), but that is the exception, not the rule. It does got a bit tiring at 50 minutes, but solidly delivers its intent.

After long thinking I felt like this album isn’t the slipknot they would become. It’s very good but for me it’s just not developed into the sound I love.

OK, I guess we have to listen to at least two Slipknot albums before we die? I was surprised by the first one (All Hope is Gone, about 500 albums ago). Thought I'd hate it. Didn't hate it. Didn't really like it. I think I liked this one a little more? But I don't really care enough to figure out why or even if that's actually true. This one had a bit of variety. A bit. There's at least one song with an actual melody, others with a rap quality to the vocals (as opposed to monster screaming like most of them). But it felt like I'd been listening to it all day when I still had three songs to go. So, kind of monotonous, too. Don't make me do another one.

I like this even though it’s a lot heavier than music I normally listen to

I don't really know how to judge it. As an old metal head I hated the nu-metal rap bands of the late 90's early 2000's. I tried to keep an open mind but it seemed like a bog standard nu-metal album to me.

A very energetic album. There’s one emotion and it’s rage. It can feel like a bit much sometimes, but it’s still a solid album, didn’t expect to like it.

This was a nostalgia trip for sure.

"Slipknot" is the debut album by American heavy band Slipknot. The music is put in the nu metal genre but really spans several heavy genres. Extensive percussion and a heavy sound is the best descriptor. The album was the first and last one with guitarist Josh Brainerd. Commercially, the album hit #51 on the US and #37 on UK charts. It was critically well received. The album opens with two songs combined "742617000027" and (sic)." Guitar scratches and repeating samples. Heavy, pounding, fast drums. Lead singer Corey Taylor screaming. An eerie guitar. Oh, this is speed metal. 74217000027 was the barcode of their demo album "Mate." In their first single "Wait and Bleed," Taylor actually sings and then screams. It goes back and forth. The music follows with thrash/speed metal to softer, more melodic. At any moment, a civilized human can go crazy. Very metal. A swirling wind sound begins "Spit It Out." Taylor now rapping. Musically, the beats are constantly changing. "We had to shoot you down. We want to spit it out." We get a sawing sound on the epic album closer "Scissors." An industrial sounding guitar. The song chugs along and builds with the percussion. As with a number of these songs, it ends chaotically. Taylor sounds like he's dying. He might be. I needed a punch in the head this morning to wake me up; this delivered that. I think this only got lumped in the nu metal category due to the time it came out and that Taylor does rap a few times throughout the album. This is fast, hard and loud. I liked it for just that reason. They do show signs of an actual melody in a few of these songs which I found to be their best. If you're a thrash/speed metal fan, you'll dig this and probably already have.

I realize Slipknot will probably get clowned on here (pun not intentional), but I've always enjoyed a few songs here and there. My inner-angry-white-boy was ALL ABOUT the first few songs, but a full album of nothing but smash-and-bang rage gets tiring after a while. Corey Taylor's rapping is also dated as hell, though I will admit his flow is solid on one track (think it was "No Life"? The track near the end of the record). The production is raw, and I think the percussion is the main focal point here, with the marching snares and near-constant barrage of double bass pedal pulling a lot of work. Again, it lasts a little longer than I think it should, but it's overall solid. Favorite tracks: "(sic)", "Eyeless"

Wasn't into it when it came out, as I had been going to hardcore shows for a few years by this time, and it wasn't anything new, just a heavier version of mainstream hard rock/hardcore-lite like Korn or something. Pretty sweet drums though. Songs generally sound the same, everything detuned, repetitive, wait and bleed was the big single, probably because its one of the few with actual singing so more digestible for mass audience. Production/mixing a lot better then contemporary hardcore acts. 2.9. Sidenote, the costume/mask stuff is fucking dumb.

I actually enjoyed it.

I'm not a big fan of the screaming, but musically it was much better than expected. That said, I can't imagine I'll ever listen to it again.

Perfectly good for the exact vibe I expect from Slipknot. But that doesn't mean I want to listen to it frequently really.

Ask me again another time

I liked this one more than I expected! Still a little too abrasive for me, but I get the appeal. Tracks like "Wait and Bleed" are pretty melodic to be honest, I get why it was the big single from this album. Slipknot has always seemed like a pretty gimmicky band to me, but they do what they do well, even if it's not necessarily for me. For a debut album, I was fairly impressed.

I was fully prepared to give this a 4/5 after the first few tracks as they were so good, but the album really overstays it's welcome being an hour long. I still enjoyed listening to it, the drums are insane, vocals are intense, and they know how to bring 110% energy on pretty much every song here. The style just runs a bit stale by the end. Can see myself going back to a bunch of songs on here.

Slipknot's overall vibe (as in their dress, the creepy breathing, manic laughter, etc) is definitely not for me. But there's some really hardcore tracks here and I can absolutely see how this had a major influence on rock, punk, emo, and heavy metal when it was released. Definitely some absolute banger thrashcore tracks here. But I really can't get past the creepy clown masks, and something about the vibe just really turns me off.

I have to say it wasn’t as bad I was expecting. Quite listenable and honestly what I needed on a Friday morning!

It's not bad. I might even call it "solid" in that most of the songs are above average. But just barely. Like 6, on a scale of 1 to 10. Converting the scale from 10 to 5, this gets 3 stars.

I can see why this would be higher for a metalhead, but for me its a 3/5. Somehow I think I'd put this on if I was trying to focus.

It hold a strange middle between schtick, hardcore and nu-metal. When 'Wait And Bleed' came out in 1999, it positively surprised me and made me listen to this album. I remember how unimpressed I was with the rest of the album, which I found decidedly mediocre (Medio-Core ? Hah!) I can't say that re-listening to it now, 20 years after the fact, has really put this album in a different perspective. The only thing I'm hearing better is how excellent the drumming was and how good Corey Taylors voice fits the music. But the songs, with a few exceptions, are not any better -and oftentimes a lot less, than that of their peers on either the hardcore or the nu-metal side. It must've been the schtick then that pulled them over the line.

Wait and bleed was a banger

Great use of the keg on track #10. This album is pretty solid. Lyrics are bad.

I am quite a slipknot fan but you really can hear the difference in their focus and individuality in subsequent albums, and while there are some great tracks that stand the test of time, some feel more like pastiches of other bands like Korn rather than Slipknot themselves.

The whole thing, I think, is sick. Eh. It's fine. This type of nu metal works best in short bursts (40 minutes max for an album - System of a Down are perfect at this), because after a while everything starts blending together and you're left with a bunch of songs of being yelled at about pussy warts or whatever, and it gets old. What I'm saying is that this album is good but repetitive and way too long. It's still probably their best album experience over all. Slipknot's more of a "put the singles in your workout playlist"-kind of band, and that's completely fine, because their singles slap hard.

Is it LOUD? Yes. Does it ROCK? Yes. Is it something I would personally listen to? No, not really. When something like this comes up in this list. I begrudgingly listen. Sometimes I'm surprised. This album is something that I think if I knew it when it came out, I might hold it in higher regard. In 1999 I think I was more open to this kind of music. Today, I'm older and my tastes have changed. I think it is really good - for the genre. I can see why people like it. The guitars and drums are amazing. There is some screaming - a bit more than I enjoy as a 56 year old. Let me have another shot of Jim Beam. I think it is helping! Standouts: Wait and Bleed, Spit it Out (both were #1 on the US Mainstream Rock chart). Overall: 3/5

Good drumming. Good debut, just not my thing.

The drumming and the scream-o!!! Sic and Wait & bleed are great! It would be 4 stars if it didn’t have so much cussing.

Huh, I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I assumed the poppier bits of later Slipknot were all that was keeping me kinda interested, but there’s plenty to enjoy here. There are still occasional chorus hooks, mixed with riffs which are fierce and concise. The first half of the album rattled along at a satisfying pace. Also, the weird guitar sounds/samples throughout really set this apart from a lot of metal, and add to the horror aesthetic. I can see why metal fans and/or angsty teens might rate this highly.

Very intense and heavy. Not for me, but, objectively, it is good for its genre.

It was good. Definitely appreciate the mixups in genre throughout this, metal can get somewhat homogenous at times so each track did keep me on my toes. The grunge influence was palpable, while giving it a metal flair that was interesting. It got a little thrashy at times for my taste, so I’m not sure how much I’ll revisit it, but for what it is it was quite good.

Liked parts of some songs but not all of one song

Ymmärrän miks tää levy on olemassa tosi hyvin, ja olinkin juniorina juuri tällaista raskaampaan kaavaan nojaavaa uutta musaa diggaileva heviletti. Mutta joo kyllähän tää aika keskenkasvuiselta kuulostaa. Kaipaan jotain herkkyyttä tähän. 3/5

Slipknot is the debut album by American heavy metal band Slipknot. Being well received by critics and fans, this album brought the band an increase in popularity. This has been voted one of the best debut albums in the past 25 years, and it is certified double platinum in the US, as well as being the band's best-selling album. Musically, this debut album is nu metal which is heavy metal that combines many other sub-genres of heavy metal. The band created a layered sound of samples, impressive guitar skill, and massive amounts of percussion. It is an extremely heavy and aggressive album. I actually enjoyed this album - specifically the hard percussion that will have you headbanging whether you want to or not - in spite of me not normally liking heavy metal. This is probably the best album from one of the greatest heavy metal bands out there. So if you're a fan of heavy metal and you don't mind some angry, filthy lyrics, than this is an album you should check out!

So angry, so loud.

It's Slipknot - do I need say anything else?

Juvenile music for juveniles, but as such one of the better

I loved this album as a high schooler, but it's just ok now. Few songs are still great, but there's too many tracks on this and the payoff isn't good enough on most. 3.25/5

Oh Slippy-Knotty. I have voiced my disdain for nu metal previously, but the non-polished, aggressiveness of Slipknot's debut is amazing. If Corey Taylor refrains from rapping (like on 'Only One'), then I can actually sort of enjoy this. '(sic)' and 'Wait and Bleed' slaps hard, and Joey Jordison is just monumental on the entire thing. What an absolute beast he was.

I genuinely love Slipknot. Let’s just get that out the way. The live theatricals, the antics, the excessive and monstrous percussions, the energy and the wall of sound provided by the sampling and scratching. It’s all too much - and it’s great. But the thing I love most about the Iowa nonet is their blend of aggressiveness and melodic choruses. And I’m missing a lot of that on their eponymous debut album. It’s mainly just aggressiveness and then some. It starts of strong with everything from “(sic)” until “Spit It Out”. Everything I like about the group is present in almost every moment of that part of the album. Then “Tattered & Torn” kicks in and I lose my focus somehow. I need those strong melodies in order to not get overwhelmed by the hate and anger of the songs. And a lot of the time it’s not present enough on the second part of the record. This is a great blueprint of the monster that Slipknot was to become. But they weren’t quite there yet. It would still be worth a listen because of, if nothing else, the percussive overload. Anyone saying that it’s just a gimmick is lying to themselves.

- Never listened to a Slipknot album before - Surprised that I actually enjoyed it - All of the songs kind of sound the same though so it seemed quite long for an hour - Great drumming kind of carries it - Fav songs: Eyeless, Prosthetics, (sic)

Spit it out is een topper. Ze zijn wel beter in de cleanere kant dan in de noise kant

Have they tried Jesus?

The amazing textures here - the different rhythms and light and sound. Lyrically very interesting and ... ... oh wait, no that was another album. It's a load of angry metal stuff. Was pretty good though.

Personally wouldn’t listen to this but it slapped pretty hard for the gym. The stars are because I appreciate the production value and the cultural significance of the album, plus the breakbeats were a nice surprise. Gets a bit angsty towards the end though

Whilst I like some of Slipknot's songs I had never actually listened to an album all the way through. After finishing I got what I kinda expected, quite liked some of the songs, others not so much. But then again as I'm not a massive fan of the genre, it would be tough to have a full album of songs I did like. From an objective POV I give it 3/5 for the songs I did like alongside some of the guitar and drums on a few of the songs. (sic) was a highlight as I hadn't heard it before but did like

Solid Album, no standout tracks but all around gym fuel, will definitely be listening to it for some workout sessions

Deilig med litt metall, men va egentlig bare heilt ok

Haven’t listened to this since I went through the obligatory Slipknot phase when I was 16. It’s kind of a lot better than I’ve given it credit for over the 20 years that have passed since I loved this. In my mind they’re a band for teenagers. And maybe they are, but I thought it was canny nonetheless. Perhaps it’s because I’ve had 2 hrs sleep and I’m both delirious and in need of something loud! Aggressive, energetic, pounding drums like not much else outside of drum and bass (remember when that was a thing?). That little tune over ‘Tattered and Torn’ was my highlight, weird in a way I cant describe but works class with the heavy backdrop. I could taste the £1 Jagerbombs when Wait and Bleed came on, and I swear my feet stuck to the floor for Spit it Out. Anyway, I’m off for another coffee

Definitely the most dramatic Beatles era, the costumes push boundaries even further than Sgt. Peppers. Content wise it's at odds with their usual message of peace and love, maybe John and Paul were having a bad day, I imagine their masks were chafing. ...Don't mind slipknot in small doses, wait and bleed is a banger but shortly after it I developed 'Slipknot fatigue', it's a bit full on for an extended listen.

I enjoyed parts of this more than I'd care to admit.

I love the heavy metal sound of Slipknot, the big drums and Corey Taylor's voice are amazing. This was never my favourite Slipknot album but it was better than I remembered. Highlights were "(sic)" and "Wait and Bleed".

Not my first choice of metal, slightly too screamy, but after a few songs you get used to it be start to enjoy it! Saved tracks: Eyeless, Surfacing, Liberate, No Life, Diluted, (sic) - Molt-Injected Mix

Not for everyone, but this album absolutely has its moments. Loud. In your face. One of the greatest albums ever? Maybe not, but there are at least 4 very good songs. Great for a workout or on the off chance you need to demo a wall, or smash something.

very drum heavy music but not bad if you're into that

2nd Slipknot album on the list so far, don't think you need two of them on the list. At one time I might have said this one, but my biggest complaint is the poor production and recording, It might have sounded trendy 20 years ago but now it sounds quite dated and bit cheesy. Therefore I think All Hope is Gone might be the better pick, even though this album is more unique and aggressive.

It feels a little weird to say that I kind of like a fair number of Slipknot songs.

Liked it when I was in high school but definitely not my thing anymore

Listened Before: Y Honestly, I didn't expect much Numetal on this list... although TBF this is my first album of numetal. However, I was kind of surprised to see it. It was pretty decent. Definitely a violent and talented introduction to the world for Slipknot.... Just not really my cup of tea. Better than some, but inferior just based on the genre. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Wait and Bleed

I'm not going to lie I was kind of scared going into this album, not because it's Slipknot, but because I had just gotten a Beatles album the previous day. I'd only head a couple of Slipknot songs prior to this album, so I guess this was my real introduction to Slipknot. I was actually pleasantly surprised. Obviously I wouldn't normally go about my day listening to this, like it isn't something I would listen to it on my own, but for a first listen its not bad. Screaming like that can't be healthy, though. Fave track(s): Eyeless

Oh boy, well I'll try to go into this with an open mind. For a debut and for nu-metal it is a very strong entry. I personally hate nu-metal and think it all sounds like it's trying too hard, but I've heard a LOT worse nu-metal. There are times there is almost an industrial sound going on, and even a few little musical things going on in the background (typically towards the beginning or end) that sound cool, but these are obviously not the main attraction. Regardless, I think they are at least better than Korn.

Not really my thing, but a strong album and an impressive debut. The album is tightly structured in a way that really serves the band's sound well. The songs are generally brief, many coming in under three minutes, with super tight percussion-driven pacing. Yes, it's loud and aggressive, but it moves along briskly and never drags or gets boring. It's also not super hard on the ears compared to a lot of Nu Metal. Apparently Slipknot doesn't like being classified as Nu Metal, with good reason. They're better than most of those bands. My main quibble is that the album could have been 2 or 3 songs shorter. Fave Songs: Eyeless, Surfacing, Prosthetics, Diluted, (sic), Tattered & Torn

Too much scream

I don't like this at all but there's no doubt that it's a great example of the genre.

I actually knew more songs on this then I thought. It was much better than I expected, but was super long.

aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhhh

decent metal sound, some of the lyrics were tough to listen to.

The production is pretty bad. The record-scratching noises are totally unnecessary and the album is missing the art of other heavy bands like System of a Down and Deftones. Also missing: Korn's grooves or Nine Inch Nails' lyricism. I believe these guys do have something to say and came up with a new sound. There are fragments of songs that wander -- maybe accidentally -- into interesting territory.

I think I only like "(sic)" and "Spit it Out".

Oh brother (literally). A band I was sort of unwillingly introduced to via big brother Alex. He was a head banger, listened to a lot of metal stuff. I enjoyed some of it here and there, but I was very dismissive of these creeps, hoping I'd never have occasion to encounter them or take their stuff seriously. And yet, here we are. Alex texted me excited this morning about the album of the day. What could it be? Kendrick Lamar? Another from Kanye? Led Zeppelin? Nope, Slipknot. The princes of darkness. I think it's fair to say that little me was creeped out by this band, and I'm sure at least once I told Alex "I just want my brother back." Listening now, trying to remove that prejudice and give a chance, it's alright. There are actually a few songs I like, in part because I recognize them from way back when. Overall though, it's an energy that I'm simply not in tune with today. Granted, I could be in a mood for crazy metal sometimes, but it's very rare, and when I am I think I'd reach for something else. But I recognize the style, the value this has, albeit for someone else. Favorite tracks: Eyeless, Wait and Bleed, Surfacing. Album art: What's creepier than a bunch of dudes in red jumpsuits and masks? Not a whole lot, I'll tell you that. I admire their commitment to the aesthetic though, because I think they even perform in the masks. Creepiness aside, it's an effective cover and a pretty badass band photo. I'm smiling through it hoping I won't have nightmares. 3/5

fast, heavy, aggressive. good drumming. the rap parts were kind of cringe. the vocals in general were kind of hit or miss. overall not bad, I didn't think I would like slipknot this much

The music was much better than I expected but the singing didn’t do it for me.

Enjoyably loud

Probably an album everyone should experience once. Very hectic and enough generating enough heat to top kilns. I saw these guys at a Big Day Out, out of curiosity. The drummer was particularly impressive, but a little too regimented.

I liked much more of the new Slipknot releases, but this first one is not bad at all. It's possible to see all the characteristics that made the band famous since this firsts songs.

Ca ete trex populaire er bcp aime encore Ujourdhii. C'est un classique mais pas mon genre du tout. 3.75

This is not for me, a 50-year-old man, and it wasn't for me in 1999 either (you can do the math) but maybe if I was a disaffected, bummed-out teenager who needed an outlet that sometimes only agressive music can satisfy, well then I think I might be into this. This is definitely better than Korn or Limp Bizkit or whatever other nu metal I may be lumping it in with either fairly or unfairly but I mean if I was at a party or bar or on a roadtrip and someone put this music on I'd probably leave or consider jumping out of the car. Maybe I'd just see if there was anything by the Deftones to put on. With all that being said Slipknot are good at what they do and next time I see some kid in one of their t-shirts I won't automatically assume they have shit taste.

Wouldn't normally be drawn to this sort of thing but it rocks...

Wait and Bleed is the only good song, mainly because the guy takes a break from screaming and actually has a decent voice. Fast and loud doesn't make something automatically good, but respect to the drummer.

creeped out from the album cover art. might not make it trhough this. Liked it more than i was expecting. a little punky.

Good for what it is, but not my kind of music.

Messy and noisy, with some cohesion but too much repetition. It’s like Napalm Death, if they all decided to play the same song at the same time.

det har inte åldrats så värdigt, eller så är det jag som vuxit upp. För 15 år sen älskade jag den här skiten men nu gillar jag t.ex inte ens längre soundet på gitarrerna.

I was really excited for this, I never listened to Slipknot growing up, they're just a metal band that missed me. I was less impressed by the album, maybe because it was a Sunday, maybe Sundays just aren't the day for a bunch of guys in masks, or maybe it just wasn't that good... Average for me

I love that regardless of genre or "sound" you can always have some catchy almost pop hooks / moments. Not one I'd choose to listen to often but I did enjoy these couple of listens

Just a bit too intense. I do enjoy some Slipknot songs but a whole album is a lot. Too much screaming and anger. So despite some nuanced instrumental work, the whole sound comes off as a bit one-dimensional - needs more depth, variety, and complexity. Still, the speed at which they play is impressive. Good - Wait and Bleed (sounds more like Taylor's Stone Sour work), Spit it Out, Me Inside. Excessive - (sic), Tattered & Torn, Liberate, Diluted, Scissors. Toeing the line - Eyeless, Prosthetics, Only One. Overall, I can't listen to the album more than once...well maybe if I'm trying to get amped up to kill someone.

I'll preface this writeup by stating that I'm not a Nu Metal fan. There were some moments on this album that made me go damn though. The playing is intense as well as the vocals and I can definitely see the draw that this album had towards anyone with some anger inside that needed to get released.

Early on my reactions were: Damn. Cool. Scary. Damn. Damn. Cool. Scary. Damn. Unfortunately the last two tracks killed this album for me. By the end of Scissors the word "relentless" came to mind. By the end of Eeyore, I was simply uncomfortable. On the second listen, I even turned Eeyore off because I couldn't listen anymore. Giving it a 3 because I liked a lot of the earlier tracks, but it just went off the rails by the end.

Despite what I was expecting, it wasn’t bad.

Unsurprisingly (to me) juvenile lyrics and surprisingly (to me) sophisticated production. Adult me would still be embarrassed to admit publicly to liking it, but my inner teenager enjoyed it a lot.

Not into metal

-Nice drum fill in "Prosthetics" -Cool voice effect on "Gimme a reason why I need to..." on "Diluted" -I like the bass slide things in "Eyeless" -Pretty solid chorus in "Wait And Bleed" -Cool guitar and drum(?) fill in in "Surfacing" The lyrics are also a lot clearer and make it easier to jam to. -It does seem like heaviness with no real counterpoint a lot of the time. Not sure if that criticism is actually legit. Idk, the blast beat drums as very "intense" and just fast chugging guitar kind of turns to sludge for me a lot of the time.there are moments where the "musical point" is much clearer, and I tend to like it more, but those seem to be the exception rather than the rule -However, I became more acclimated on the 2nd and 3rd listens, and my opinion definitely improved with more listening

"Like a donkey kick to the head" wakes you up on long drive. Towards the end the song blur together.

I didn't like it at first, but the vocals grew on me. Favorite track is probably Surfacing.

20 years ago this would have been an instant 5 from me. As I've grown older, the screaming metal sound just isn't for me, but I really like the music still. Teenage me would be so ashamed.

Super intense, can't say I'll pop this on at a dinner party but it has craft and energy

Quite a decent racket

Gets repetitive after a while

I know that this album represents a subset of metal. I enjoyed listening to this while I was lifting. I wouldn't tend to listen to this to this otherwise.

Dødsmetal. Er vel produceret, så men slet ikke min stil. Alt for meget skrål

More like 3.5 stars based on nostalgia but I didn't listen to it much this time around

did not listen

Surprised to see them on here but honestly held up nicely. The drumming is really tight

slipknot sucks balls and dick

Nonsense

I feel like I’m losing my mind when I listen to this album. It’s the kind of music our parents warned us about!

Like the genre but just never captured the enticement of them.

I mean... at least the drummer is really good

Edgy….

Slipknot kommer aldrig bli mina hjältar.

Jag klarar inte av growlande. Har till och med svårt för det med Opeth. Sorgligt!

This is very much Not My Genre, but I didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would! It certainly has its time and place.

5/5 for the masks, probably only 2/5 for the music, but I can see a world where I would like parts of this

Look, I gave it a shot. I really did. And there’s moments of good stuff in here. But I just find this, for the most part, impenetrable. Just a cacophony of noise. Nice chunky drums, tho.

Wow, so edgy

It has moments of OK-ness, I guess, in a raw, primal way. One or two songs remind me a tiny bit of SoaD, but mostly it just sounds like a Walmart Korn with some token hip-hop scratching and the typical nu-metal drum style popular during the era, which, to be fair, was exciting and new at the time. The lyrics are pretty cringe and there is a deliberate attempt to push the boundaries of dissonance. There is no fun here, just anguish and angst. I feel like this is just KISS for the new bleak millennium only without the merchandising.

Is this the campest album on this list? Voice bad, guitar bad, drum good.

This starts off so sick and then goes on for way too long. Like I loved the first ten minutes but I feel obliged to go 2 on the basis that I was desperate for it to be over for like 25 minutes straight

As every self-respecting person who is now nearing 30, I have been raised on nu-metal. This type of sound was a huge part of my childhood. That chapter has been long gone so I was in a way looking forward to re-igniting the spark. Unfortunately it didn't work out as well. I was never that big on Slipknot. I like some of their later albums but this one was a grind to get through. The songs are formulaic in a bad way. The lyrics are the epitome of edginess and once the album loses novelty, the slog toward the end begins. Joey Jordison's drumming is the one thing that shines through as well as Corey Taylor's vocal performance whenever he decides to show range. It wasn't a fun journey and I am not sure if I will give another listen to this particular one. Then again it is fun to remember that back in the day people would come up with these crazy rumors about some bands and artists. Slipknot used to play heavy into them while trying to build the freaky image. I don't think much of it (if any) was true but it helped solidify them as the band they are known today. My favorite song was "Wait and Bleed".

not my thing I'm happy to say. sounds like 1 long bit of noise and I usually like noise ..the swans...mars Volta. etc.

Not my favorite

This is so constantly aggressive I actually got bored with it and the screaming. I dug this album when it came out, but just can’t get into it now. Drums are still pretty cool though.

Trying to listen to this in an office on a quiet day really wasn't the vibe. Normally don't mind some heavier stuff but that took me out of it.

ALREADY LISTENED

I like drum. I don't like scream

Overall Rating - 1.61/5 (3.21/10). Just unpleasant from start to finish.

Känns väldigt enformigt.. De har så klart en del bangers men man blir trött på energin

While that was definitely not an album for me, I appreciate albums like this on the list. I would never have heard them otherwise.

Impressive drumming, but this isn’t for me

Slipknot? More like Slip-NOT heheheohohoho

I recorded an album with Ross Robinson once. He was a cool dude and turned me into a better drummer overnight. I love the way he’s able to tap into the deepest part of a musician’s psyche to get something truly special out of them. This album is full of those moments. I don’t love the music but I appreciate the energy.

Their lyrics are miserable and I doubt I will ever choose to listen to Slipknot. It's not for me and I never really understood the appeal, even as a moody teenager with an axe to grind. BUT they created a new sound and pushed boundaries and I admire the musicianship, their unique image and the fact they did things on their own terms, so for that reason they get a two star.

Why is it soooo hard to find original releases using streaming media? The deluxe and anniversary editions are about 20 minutes longer, which gets this experience off to a bad start. Im sure this album and band are great, but i just found it loud, aggressive, and annoying. I was an album behind today, so I also listened to the Scott Walker album, immediately prior to this - quite the contrast! lol. Just noise and considering some of the omissions from the 1001 list, it's frustrating that so many great artists/albums are missing and Slipknot gets 2! :-(

In another life, I am born a cis boy in 1985 and this album comes out and makes me profoundly annoying. My parents come in while it’s on and I explain to them why it is amazing and they say “that’s nice, honey.” They’re a little worried that the people I hang around are getting me into drugs. I outgrow it and get into better music but look back on it with nostalgia as an adult. I did not grow up with this album and harbor no such nostalgic feelings toward it. But I cannot help but recognize some aspect of myself that would have fucked with this to an annoying extent had I discovered it earlier. Listening to this now, however, I have to recognize that it is ass. The production sounds really bad to me? Like everything sounds hollow and I feel like the vocals are too loud? And of course it is profoundly corny but I feel like harping on that too much isn’t taking this album for what it is. Coming in with the “allthetimeI turnaroundbrothersgatherroundalwayslookingatmeupanddownlookinhatmy(uh)” flow on spit it out made me laugh. Would give a 2.5 if halvsies were allowed.

Very happy to get the two Slipknot albums out of the way relatively close to each other, they're both totally unremarkable. I do this project because I want to be surprised, not to listen to exactly what you would expect.

can't wait to see the Crampo review anthems for teenage boys who don't want to clean their room

I need something more than airplane propellor powered drums to consider it a good metal album

Very experimental

I just can't get with this one. Some positives are the sinister vibes - it just sounds plain evil - and some of the percussion sounds (like on "Tattered and Torn." Now for some of the negatives. The swearing is overdone, it's all fuck this and fuck that, fuck it all and fuck her fucking brat. I feel the swearing could've been more done at pivotal points in the songs (e.g. at the end of a chorus,) which in my opinion would only would have amplified the experience. Rather than fuck as an every other word which is totally boring and a let down. The vocals are not great, I'm usually into harsh vocals (at least screaming and yelling) but something about Corey's harsh vocals doesn't excite or wonder me. You might see there are more negatives than positives, that's how I honestly feel about it. Some of my gripes about this album might be with more general nu metal shenanigans than just Slipknot stuff. This album is unintentionally justifying my dislike of nu metal. All the albums I come across from the generator are always approached with open-mindedness, and are almost wholeheartedly approached without the intention of hating it. I always try to look at the bright side of an album, but that sometimes that gets you nowhere. Just most things about this album I just flat out do not like, and I won't be returning to even though there a couple positive elements. Highlight Song/s: "Tattered and Torn" and "Diluted"

Significantly better than I anticipated. Not anything that I would revisit many times. 7/10 [KEEP]

I don't listen to this style of music whatsoever, but I can see why this might be a better choice from it; there were some interesting sounds and satisfying rhythms at points, including in the vocals. It's hard to rate very highly when I don't care for this kind of music

Supringly not hating this but can’t listen to more than three songs in a row at a time

This one has been in my queue for a couple of weeks; truly didnt have the energy to listen to it. That said....better than expected. Best way to describe it - lots of yelling. Still only a 2/5.

ok, no me gusta ese genero :(

Stress inducing

Reminds me of my youth and Wait & Bleed and a few others are bangers but overall, eh.

listened to almost all of this. vocals are annoying and lyrics are even worse, but there is a glimmer of good stuff in the shit. a lot of talented musicians on here, especially the drummer

Fun blast beats, too rare riffs, stupid lyrics. Once is aggro but this record is way too long and doesn't vary enough to stay aggro. Settles into tedious.

An all-out assault—there’s just too much sonic pain for me. I think music should cause more pleasure than pain.

A few good tracks but generally too much teenage angst

Must admit my heart sank when these guys came up. Really dislike the shock aesthetic. In reality, the record was more engaging (and considerably more thoughtful) than I'd anticipated. Does that mean I liked it? Not really. I guess as a reaction to broken America and difficult upbringings it makes sense but I can't directly relate to that on this level of nihilism or abasement. Missing the point I know but come on guys, chill out now and then.

Not for me

I made it through. Barely. I understand that I am not the intended demographic for this music. I can appreciate the anger (this is the mood of my inner dialogue from the hell-scape that is the U. S. In 2026), and there are moments where the vocals are down-right melodic (Linkin Park - like, even). But those moments are too few and far between for my liking.

It's noise, but it's not terrible? It's not good either, by any means, very white suburban rage.

One year later, I get a second Slipknot album. And yet I remember very little from my first experience (All Hope Is Gone). All I remember about Slipknot heading into this record is that they do heavy (verging on death) metal, and their lead vocalist is good when singing in a "human" voice but horrifically bad most of the time. Amazing percussion, though, and the guitar (though a little monotone at times) Bad opening track. A vocal loop with no other instrumentation cannot ever be constitutive of good music unless the singer really knows what he's/she's doing. The first full-length track, (sic), carries the torch from All Hope Is Gone and reminds us that they're here for an earsplitting time, not a long time. Absolutely godawful vocals. Eyeless does better, if only because I've remembered to completely tune the vocals out by this point. There's plenty else to listen to anyway. The drumming is kind of killer here, particularly in the mini-instrumentals between verses where it perfectly matches the guitar line. (Seems like Led Zeppelin's legacy continues.) But it's the song Wait and Bleed where Slipknot really shines. The melody, clear vocals, precise energetic instrumentation backing it up... At least until you reach the chorus section at 25 seconds in, the song is honestly fantastic. And the streaming numbers reflect this. Why all of Slipknot's tracks aren't more along these lines, I have no idea. Surfacing and Spit It Out are also pretty darn solid, particularly the latter, which contains such a weirdly engaging vocal line that I can't help but love it. Every ten seconds, the singer is doing something completely different. There's something for everyone. Even a warbling bass synth solo. The second half of the album definitely steps off the gas. Tracks like Diluted, No Life, and Scissors do very little with their musical ideas. (Re the latter: I'm fairly certain most audiences don't want to listen to a guy making intense sexual noises.) 2/5 Key tracks: Wait and Bleed, Spit It Out, Purity

I didn't hate it as much as I expected but it mostly made me feel anxious. I understand the appeal and some of the songs are good. Im just the wrong audience.

I try to approach each album with an open mind however this album has two things I absolutely detest: overly long run time and nu-metal. I tried hard but this 100% is not music for me and is a complete struggle. The lyrics are meant for angsty teenagers. But I'm neither angsty or a teenager. Good drums though… 2⭐️

Not to my tastes.

Just too screamy.

This hybrid screaming-singing-rapping is not for me. It was dreadful but not as bad as I expected for some reason

Anstrengend, muss man fühlen dann ist cool

Definitely not my thing. Very repetitive and not a style of music I like. Also the texture of the masks on the front cover make me uncomfortable. I’m not scared of creepy masks but the texture is so gross and not in a cool scary way.

Album number 48, Slipknot, Slipknot ⭐⭐ I hated nu metal when I was a teenager. It was the big thing at the time and it never, ever gelled with me. I’m not really a big metalhead in general, though I do like some metal. So this isn’t really my thing. A few years ago, a friend recommended Toxicity by System of a Down, and I ended up loving it. I thought it was brilliant, and if it came up on this list I’d probably give it five stars. So when this came up, I went in with an open mind thinking maybe I’d been wrong about this genre. And I kind of was, and kind of wasn’t. Starting with the positives, the production on this is great. I love some of the choices, like the turntable scratching, the drum and bass-style intro on one of the tracks, the squelchy effects, phasing, and all that found-sound percussion stuff. It keeps things interesting. Even though it’s about 49 minutes long, I can’t say I was ever bored. Musically, it is quite formulaic. Once the verses and choruses kick in, it’s hard to differentiate a lot of the songs. They do change things up a bit on tracks like Prosthetics and Scissors, but for the most part it sticks to that same structure and guitar tone throughout. That’s the genre though, so it kind of is what it is. The best thing on the album is the drumming. It’s outrageous. Absolutely spectacular. I genuinely found myself wondering how he came up with some of those parts. The fills, the sound of the kit, the crack of the snare, the weight of everything, it’s all incredible. The drums are nearly front and centre, and they carry a lot of the album. And that’s kind of the issue. Because what is actually front and centre is Corey Taylor. To be fair, he’s clearly very talented. He can do everything. The growl, the scream, the clean singing, even a bit of rapping. But I just can’t stand this style of vocal. It’s what puts me off every time. I find it really cringey. It’s just this solipsistic whining, moaning, and over-the-top angst. When I was a teenager and going through my own stuff, I never connected with this kind of thing. It just feels boring to listen to, and because he’s so high in the mix, you can’t escape it. I honestly think I’d enjoy this album more if the vocals were stripped out entirely. And it’s not even necessarily his fault, it’s just the style. It suits the music, but it’s not for me. Going back to Toxicity, there was always a bit of ambiguity in what Serj Tankian was doing. Here, there’s no ambiguity. It’s all very direct, very dramatic, very in-your-face, and I just can’t take it seriously. I found it cringey as a teenager and I still find it cringey now. So yeah, some great musicianship, especially in the drums, but the vocals completely ruin it for me.

Fav- spit it out 2/5

This is not my favorite genre by far, but the drummer is really good. I survived this album by focusing on the melodies (yes, there are occasional melodies here) and the drums. Otherwise, I pretty much hated this.

Loved it when it came out, really not in the mood to listen to it as an adult.

Too angry for me

perhaps if this had caught me on a really angry day it would be a better score. perhaps.

Not my thing.

Too noisy for me

Ho-lee-shit, boys. Strong start, I’ll give ‘em that much. I rated “All Hope is Gone” a 3, and I’m going with a 2 for this one because it’s a little TOO hard for me. Unlike “All Hope is Gone”, there’s no softer side explored and 15 tracks of pure aggression is TOO MUCH for me. If this is on the background, I might headbang for like 3 minutes and then ask politely to change the station. LIBERATE! BANANASSS! Amen.

There are worse metal bands that you could listen too than Slipknot. It's not really my kind of metal but it's pretty good at it's core. Just not my cup of tea.

I’m not listening to all that, but I’m giving it to cause I know the drummer must play like crazy

This never was for me.

2/3. Couldn't quite finish this one; just became too much noise for me in the end. I actually thought it was decently paced, and some of the music itself is cool(ish), with the heavy drums, guitars, and unique sound design. I just don't like these vocals (or the boring rapping), and this level of angst and anger just doesn't resonate with me at all. I do think it's culturally significant though and deserves its spot on the list.

I can't listen to an hour of this. Made it through the first few songs and then gave up. Giving it 2 stars instead of 1 because I'm sure it's a great example of the musical genre, but I just get such bad vibes from it that I can't listen to it. Which is probably what the band was going for.

Holy cow. These people hate their parents. Amazing drumming, and how the singer can scream like that is amazing. I prefer a bit more musicality to my music, and most Nu Metal kinda sucks. This has its moments though.
