Reviews (page 3 of 6)
Some good songs, some duds. Could have been a shorter album, and my opinion would have been higher.
Ikke så ille som jeg trodde det kom til å være, men ikke helt min stil heller.
I love 2000s era rnb and this sounds exactly like I expected it to
Just a. Regular r and b record. Can tell she’s British - some points reminded me of Amy wine house. It’s fine but not something I needed to hear. Ah this record featured the classic late 90s early 2000s dead air for seemingly ever then a half minute of a secret track. What an awful trend.
It's not my genre, but I did enjoy it. "Dynamite" was good.
well new area to me
One of several records where I'd be interested to read fella's review in his book, because this feels pleasant but inessential. But I certainly prefer her flows to Southern rap.
It's fairly enjoyable, not as bad as a lot of the early 2000s stuff I hate but not particularly worth talking about 20+ years later.
I know I’ve heard the name, but I’m not sure who Ms. Dynamite is. Our friend Wikipedia says she is a British singer and rapper. I might have known that at one time. This album came out in 2002 and won the Mercury Prize, which is given to the best album in the United Kingdom and Ireland. That’s about all our buddy Wikipedia has. So, I’m going in blind with not much to go on. She is English, so that’s interesting. Track 1 is Natural High (Interlude). Ah, yes, the interlude on rap albums. Not exactly sure how or why this trend started, but I guess most rappers think of themselves as comedians as well? At most, interludes on hip-hop and rap albums are meant to be funny. , Miss D has a bit of a Jamaican accent, I hear. Which makes sense as her father was Jamaican. She seems to be anti-drug, which is commendable. Track 2 is Dy-Na-Mi-Tee and the music is very laid back. I’m sure it’s sampled. Oh, snap! I’ve heard this song. This was the second single off the album. She’s kind of rapping, but it also sounds like she’s singing. It’s nothing new or innovative, but it sn’t straight rapping. Good track. It has a sample of Jimmy “JJ” Walker yelling “Dynomite!” in the middle of the song. You whippersnappers can Google that. Not sure the song was released here as a single, but it was a top 40 hit throughout Europe. How do I know this? Track 3 is Anyway You Want and it features Keon Bryce, who I believe is a singer. So far, this album is pretty good. Less rap, more singing. I feel like I’ve heard this song too. It wasn’t a single though. Maybe I listened to this album when it came out in 2002. Track 4 is Put Him Out and it was the third single off the album. I’m really enjoying this album, but it’s not necessarily anything mind-blowing. Oddly, it seems like after one more full-length album and a mixtape in 20025 and 2006 respectively, Miss Dynamite essentially stopped making music. Or she at least stopped releasing it. As I continued to listen to the album, I could hear a bit of an Eminem influence in certain songs. Not necessarily his rapping style, but kind of the playful music that appears in some of his songs. Early on in his career, a lot of his songs sounded playful and fun. Track 6, It Takes More, sounds like it could have been an Eminem track. It was also a single. I’m down to track 10, Seed Will Grow, featuring Kymani Marley, and these middle songs all have a Dr. Dre vibe to them. I pointed out that track 6 sounds like an Eminem track, well, Dr. Dre produced most of his tracks that sounded like that. So maybe they don't sound like Eminem tracks so much as they sound like Dr. Dre tracks. It seems the album was produced by some Swiss guys known as Bloodshy & Avant. Those dudes have a resume featuring a ton of the most popular pop divas over the last 20 years. That may explain why the music sounds pretty good. This album is a pretty good pop album. This album ended up being a fun listen, though I’m not hearing anything groundbreaking. I’d like to know the reasoning for each album's addition to the 1,001 Albums list, but it’s hard to track down a current, affordable copy of the book. Some albums are easy to see why they’d be included, while others, like this album from Miss Dynamite, it isn’t exactly clear why this is a must-listen. For lovers of hip-hop, pop, and Eminem, I think you’d really enjoy this album. It’s about three to four songs too long, but every album these days is like that, it seems. I’m sure a real hip-hop fan will dig this album, as for me, it’s cool, but I doubt I’ll ever hear it again.
Ok. Probably will listen again when in the mood for it…like her lyrics. 3.0
Naishiphopia 2000 luvulta, eiköhän se tältä silloin kuulostanut. Ei hassumpaa
ok
Ok but diminishing returns album
Too long, not my thing. 2.9/5
Never really thought about the idea of middle of the road rnb/hip hop, well now I have. Definitely Amy Winehouse sounding vocals, which is a surprise as not everone from London sounds like this, and this predates her, wonder why this is less well known? Mmm, less tabloid interest, less pale? Personally think this is a better record too. is in and of itself kinda okish, nice enough listen but it’s stuck in low gear and well all the fun that brings, you get there, and some nice scenery on the way but not too thrilling. As another review puts, quiet pedestrian. It's OK, it's nice enough, don't know I needed to definitely hear, but I haven't not sure essential but there you go. 3 Star
Not normally my genre but she was pretty good 3.5/5
New to my ears, never heard of her …across the pond and never had another album …loved it, super energetic effort!
The main song is alright, but the records fairly bland.
Don't really see what makes this special. In hindsight it seems to fit right in with the rest of the good early 2000s RnB, but doesn't stand out to me in any way.
started really interessting but sadly turned out way too boring. Especially the tracks without instruments and just singing were not good at all.
Fun album, feels much fresher than its age.
153/1001 First listen. By the end of this I was like Is this even the same album? Whole other vibe goin’ on. I’m not going to listen to this again but I did like the sound of it. This is a strong two but I’ll bump it to three stars. It kept me interested. 5/10
Was middle of the road for me. I liked it but I dont think I would listen to again. She is a good rapper
another perfectly fine but totally forgettable older r&b album. this one will be lost to the sands of time. 3/5
Judging the cover art, this is 2002. I don’t think I would like this, and even the first song comes off cheesy to me, but as the rest of the songs unfolded, I enjoyed them all the same.
A little dated but a lot of good tracks. Kind of like a bridge between what Mary J Blige was doing and what Amy Winehouse was going to do!
A competent hip hop/R&B mix, if not a bit samey. Dancehall flavors are sprinkled throughout, a reflection of the Caribbean culture in England. Heaps of female empowerment and largely positive vibes. I don't really check for UK rap like that. If Lil Kim isn't on the list, I'm gonna scream.
Relatively ordinary R&B of its time, but of a good quality with some engaging songs, it forms an adequately solid album on the whole
perdon pero no es mi estilo nose
This was great! The beats were a little scrappy, in a very tactile way if that makes sense? And her lyricism and flow are impressive, this was a great project!
I enjoyed this record. It's not really my wheelhouse, but it was a good listen.
Clues in the album title. A deep album filled with personal struggles triumph and pain. A true meditation on growing up as a young female in the inner city and navigating the daily challenges. Difficult for me to fully appreciate as a white 30 odd male but can fully empathise with the verses spoken. Some stand out moments with Dy-Na-Mi-TE and Seed Will Grow but a fully enjoyable album none the less. Some really great vocals laid down here too with a mix of Hip Hop/Rap and Soul. It's not an album I'll continue to jump to and listen to in full, but there's some brilliant tracks on here for sure
Really enjoyed this one. I wonder if Lauren Hill hadn’t been so popular that this lady would have been more well known.
It was okay, I liked how it flows, it's pleasant and liked the rapping and the music in general. Not bad!
Honestly, this one stands it's ground among 2000s rap/rnb albums. Stronger 3
A bit of Lauren Hill, & Alicia Keys with the Destiny's Child Harmonies. For the most part I really liked this and can see why it was very popular (in the UK) at the time, but also why she's not a legacy artist. (7.45) ★★★½
I liked this more than I expected. I have a bit of a soft spot for female UK hiphop, and I liked the beats quite well. 3.5 stars
‘Ms Dy-Na-Mi-Tee-Hee’ is a very catchy hit and rightfully deserves its place on the FIFA Football 2003 soundtrack… not so much on a 1001 Albums list. I can’t say I’ve ever wanted to dig into Ms Dynamite even ‘a little deeper’. It Takes More is the other main distinctive hit here and is also pretty sass with slight future echoes of Amy Winehouse You Know I’m No Good. The rest of the album is just really standard smooth RnB or cheesy clunky hip hop and goes on for too long. That’s the crux of it really… sass rapper n singer, super average songs outside of the 2 decentish hits. Generous 3 even though the FIFA Football 2003 soundtrack should be here instead.
This wasn't really my genre. It had its moments that I enjoyed, but mostly I was just waiting for it to be over, and it was a long album. Looking back though, it was a well produced collection of music. Three stars.
Love
Ms. Dynamite's “A Little Deeper” isn't bad for a contemporary R&B album. Once you skip the rather annoying “Dy-Na-Mi-Tee,” the remaining 13 tracks offer a variety of ragga vibes that are easy on the ears. I like that not everything sounds the same and that the singer has a pretty good voice, which is complemented on two songs by male singers—whose names I didn't know, but who fit well with the overall sound. Nothing here is really outstanding, and it remains a genre of music that I can't really get into... Nevertheless, if you need some modern easy listening background music, “A Little Deeper” is not a bad choice.
Catchy in some areas but just mid overall
The UK bias strikes again. Ignoring that it's fine. Well produced. Definitely Nelly Furtado vibes, which is odd since she is supposed to be from London. Looks like Nelly Furtado didn't make the list. Loose deserves a place above this. 2.5/5. Raising to 3.
There's nothing wrong with this for what it is, but I could not for the life of me figure out why it is on the list.
Good voice and innovative tbh
Although the 2000s sound is still somewhat in vogue, this album felt dated and offered nothing special or interesting.
All the music is objectively good but you know I just I didn’t feel that connections with it. The other songs have but like it’s objectively good music but I don’t think it’s for me.
A little generic and long but not too bad. low 3/5
I was a senior in high school when this came out, but have never heard of her then or since. Gave me Doechii vibes a little, less on the nose than some of the other socially conscious artists at the time.
Chill vibes, some songs had deep lyrics, but just the thing I was expecting and hoping for. Nothing crazy complicated or over the top. 6/10
Enjoyed it more than expected. Very typical Noughties hip-hop album. Some great songs, some lesser, but all still pretty good. A surprising one today.
ho la sensazione che dovrei/vorrei ascoltarlo di nuovo e meglio. mi ricorda un po’ lauryn hill. non mi è dispiaciuto
This was a decent listen, but it didn’t really blow me away. The themes are strong and there’s clearly something being said, which I respect, but musically it didn’t always pull me in. There are moments where it clicks and feels confident, but a lot of it just kind of passed by without sticking.
This album was a nice mix of hip-hop and R&B. I don't necessarily consider myself an expert in these genres, but Ms. Dynamite's work here somehow stood out from other typical albums in these genres from this time period. I enjoyed it!
6/10
It’s a shame this album never crossed the Atlantic. It’s just as good, maybe better, than what was popular/marketed in America at the time. I particularly liked “put him out” and “brother”.
Best Song: Dy-Na-Mi-Tee. This is a great pop song, that definitely should have been more popular than it was. Love the playful chorus. Worst Song: Watch Over Them. In typical early 00's pop fashion, there is some obligation to interrupt an otherwise upbeat pop album with some stripped down, preachy, socially-conscious ballad. How did the artist not listen to the transition from this song to the next one and not think that it was an egregious tonal shift? Overall: An interesting mix of great R&B-tinged pop, but unfortunately interwoven with some Britney/Christina era tracks that make it feel more dated.
Pretty ordinary album. Begins well and trails off. Some songs go on too long. I haven't thought of this album in twenty years, then it appeared on the generator today, the I watched Harry Hill's podcast on YouTube and the comedian Stewart Lee was challenged S.A.R.A.H. an AI robot that lists his favourite music,, as The Fall, Giant Sand, Calexico and Ms Dynmite, Challenged on the latter Lee points out that it was an interview from 25 years ago and he needed to add somethong he loked that was in the charts but now "sounds like a really strange thing to admit to." Harry then sings Put Him Out accompaning himself on swanny whistle, clapper, duck calls etc, Its better than the version on album. People ask why this is in the book. It was a big album in Britain at the time and this is a British book written for the British market. It rather unexpectedly won the Mercury Award and sold well on the back of that. The book was published a year or so later. They chose a current big lp. They didn’t have the hindsight to see it would not become a classic 20 years later. A few years on that was clear and the record was removed from later editions. For me the problem with this lp it isn’t especially English. I like music that feels like it comes from a particular place. The Mercury Award that year should have gone to Original Pirate Material which is undisputably about being young and English and urban. Ms Dynamite could be American and there are Americans who do this sort of thing better.
Well, this one's a bit of a flash in the pan, isn't it? I guess the UK thought Ms. Dynamite here was going to be huge before fading into obscurity. It's no wonder this thing was included on the list seeing as it won the Mercury Prize just 3 years prior to this album list being made. The people behind this list really care about the Mercury Prize it seems. Every album that one the prize from 1999 to 2008 is included on this list. That's dumb, and it leads to albums being included that have been forgotten to time. But should A Little Deeper be among them? Does this album deserve to be forgotten to time, or should it have actually been as big as the UK music journalists once thought? Eh. The album's good, but it doesn't really do anything that special. I'll give A Little Deeper this. It is far from the worst UK hip-hop album of the list. It's much better than the Streets, that's for sure. Is it the best UK hip-hop album of the list? No. It's not even the best UK hip-hop album from a woman on the list. The Little Simz album was quite a bit better than this. However, there are things that I enjoyed here. I think Ms. Dynamite's voice is nice. She's got a good style to her singing and rapping. I will say that, aside from a few features, brief moments, and the production at times, this doesn't really scream "British" on first listen. Like, I could see my mom listening to this, and she listens to, like, Megan Thee Stallion and the Ying Yang Twins. But, there are those things that I mentioned. The production especially has some major UK Garage elements that felt kinda jarring at first. The writing is pretty interesting. Ms. Dynamite is kinda like a British Lauryn Hill in a way. This album isn't nearly as good as Lauryn Hill's album, but I digress. This is definitely a woman's album, which I have nothing against. Admittedly, I can see why people were interested in this on release. It's good, and while this kind of thing had already been done in the US, it must've been cool for the UK music journalists to see an artist from their home turf making something like this for once. However, I can also see why it hasn't really remained relevant. It's got good songs and writing and such, but sometimes you just have those flash-in-the-pan artists and musical moments that you can look back on fondly if you were there, but that aren't going to be making waves much in the long-term. I do actually like this one quite a bit though. Strong 3/5.
Honestly better than I expected, this is a solid hiphop/r&b album. It definitely feels like an early 2000s album
Interesting guitar with a nice amount of jazz and reggae influence made this album more interesting and enjoyable than your average pop rap R&B album. Ms. Dynamite's vocals are smooth and the backup vocals provided by a variety of other artists compliment the music well. The a capella track was a nice reprieve near the middle of the album and allowed Dynamite's vocals to shine without the support of the band.
"A Little Deeper" is a fusion of different genres, most of which aren't really my thing, nonetheless they were performed well. I found the opening of the album quite pleasant, especially the breezy vibes of 'Dy-Na-Mi-Tee'. However, there are some really nice pop melodies to be found, particularly on 'Put Him Out'. The vocals are certainly distinctive - Ms. Dynamite has a very specific sound in her upper register that feels almost 'helium-infused' at times. Overall, the production and mix are high quality. If this is your preferred style of music, you’d likely rate it higher, but I’m not hearing anything truly ground-breaking here. The album is a tad over long as well. Three stars. 1 "Natural High (Interlude)" (3/5) 2 "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee" (4/5) 3 "Anyway U Want It" (featuring Keon Bryce) (3/5) 4 "Put Him Out" (3/5) 5 "Brother" (2/5) 6 "It Takes More" (Bloodshy Main Mix) (3/5) 7 "Sick 'n' Tired" (3/5) 8 "Afraid 2 Fly" (3/5) 9 "Watch Over Them" (2/5) 10 "Seed Will Grow" (featuring Kymani Marley) (3/5) 11 "Krazy Krush" (3/5) 12 "Now U Want My Love" (3/5) 13 "Too Experienced" (featuring Barrington Levy) (3/5) 14 "Gotta Let U Know" (3/5) 15 "All I Ever" (3/5) 16 "A Little Deeper"/"Get Up, Stand Up" (Pregap Track) (3/5) Total - 47 Average - 2.94 222/1001 125/222 albums reviewed were new to me.
This was okay. I really liked Dy-Na-Mi-Tee. I vaguely remember it from when I was a kid. I also enjoyed the duet with Kymani Marley. Other than those two it was okay. It’s very of its time, and to be frank I am not sure why it’s on this list of albums you must hear before you die. Over all not a bad album, but not a stand out.
I was expecting fluffy R&B and this isn’t that.
Pretty good sounds! Definitely some stand outs.
A lot better than expected. I LOVE a good vocalist/rapper, and although some of this didn't "age" well musically, I'm a fan of a solid beat. This was fun. Wouldn't revisit the whole thing but there were a good chunk of songs I enjoyed.
Very reminiscent of its time
This is a good pop album. Good production, not too long, also because it is nicely diverse in songwriting.
From what I gathered, R'n'B singers seem to really like babies Anyway, powerful start, there are some really good songs in here, and despite being an hour long it didn't bore me, although some of the later songs were meh and brought the average down
A few numbers are catchy, but it was challenging to listen to a second time, as her soul is not for me.
It takes moreeeeee and night after nightttttt were vibey, but we’re rating albums
Made me want to learn some of the lyrics and sing along…
It has its moments. Dy-Na-Mi-Tee is catchy and stands out. As an album I found it needlessly long. I suppose it would be good to have on at a party, but I don’t want to sit and listen.
High 3
I have a playlist called “remedial hip hop” where I try to collect all the gems I missed over the years due to internalized boundaries of genre and race. When I heard this album, I enjoyed it enough to put the title track on the list. And there was a friendly funkiness I enjoyed across all the tracks. But at the same time, I’ve heard enough hip hop at this point that the critiques of the album expressed by other reviewers hit home. It does kind of feel like your friend who everyone said would be the next Lauryn Hill… you can still like them even if that didn’t turn out to be true. That’s kind of how I felt about this… enjoyable but not life-changing
A Little Deeper was a pretty good album. I haven't heard all that much of Ms. Dynamite other than a song that she featured in (Dj Fresh and Jay Fay's Dibby Dibby Sound) but this Hip-Hop with a bit of electronic sounds mixed in is more or less what i was expecting from her. As for the songs, there are some good ones and some meh ones. The beats themselves could be pretty good at their best and forgettable and boring at worst. The lyrics here do have some of the typical kinda juvenile themes you would expect from rap music but they at least weren't the dumbest things i have heard. This album isn't amazing but it does what it sets out to do pretty well. Best Song: It Takes More Worst Song: A Lil Deeper
I enjoyed this
Ms. Dynamite: A Little Deeper Ms. Dynamite’s debut is a thoughtful exploration of social struggle and feminism, echoing the conscious spirit of Lauryn Hill’s The Miseducation. While her perspective is vital and her message is clear, the album suffers from a tonal disconnect. The production—a polished fusion of R&B, Reggae, and UK Garage—is technically solid but often feels too upbeat for the weight of the subject matter. This creates a friction where the urge to dance distracts from the "serious story" being told. It is a decent project with strong intentions, but the production ultimately prevents the lyrical depth from fully landing.
Not exactly self-effacing, but ultimately unassuming, Ms. Dynamite makes sure you know that she's a dynamiter out of self-defense: 'But the more that I learned / I found a guidin' light / That showed me the need to fight.' It isn't clear what she's fighting against, but I have no reason not to believe her, and when she's schooling her sister on the ugly ways of men ('Put Him Out'), I'm moved to join the anthem. She's more a dependable family-first + chicks-before-dicks kind of lady than she is an explosive character, tho her moniker suggests otherwise. The problem is that her voice and song-writing abilities aren't singular ('Dy-Na-Mi-Tee' is the only treasured find). And the bigger problem is that Amy Winehouse would emerge a year later.
Starts great, peters out along the way. It's alright albeit too long.
Eh. Weh. Meh.
pretty good clone of “the miseducation of lauryn hill.” silly, vapid lyrics. but the music has back bone. reggae and rap and santana guitar. classic 90s/00s pop. enjoyed.
A couple of decent tracks, but far too long with far too much filler to be good
Not bad but not really my thing. Dy-Na-Mi-Tee is not only a FIFA 03 classic, but an all-time top track tbf.
Never heard of this artist. Cool stuff so far. Very chill hip hop. almost r&b-ish. Pretty cool stuff. Not something I'd go out of my way but I dig it.
The only thing I previously knew Ms. Dynamite from was the song she did with David Guetta, Showtek & Elliphant in 2014 ("No Money No Love"), so it was cool to hear her in her element on A Litttle Deeper. Honestly not the most memorable album in the world, but it's got a few good tunes and is never outright bad. Listening to the LP also made me want to check out a couple of the collabs she's done with SHY FX – they've made some real bangers! Highlights: Dy-Na-Mi-Tee, Put Him Out, Brother, It Takes More (Bloodshy Main Mix), Krazy Krush, Get Up Stand Up
This is not my jam. But I didn’t hate it. I’d give it 3.5 if I could. That cruisey, RnB feel with some great (and wholesome) lyricism.
I enjoyed it quite a lot but I did find myself fighting against a 4 because it was samey rather than cohesive.
Half the album is 4, but half is 1 or 2.
Fine. A little trite.
Not really a wow for me , nice vibes and catchy beat tho. Also gave me Ms Lauryn Hill vibes .
It was different, seemed more raw, liked the style and reminded me of amy's frank for some reason. A 3.6 for me.
I'm really digging the reggae and hip-hop mix, it's very laid back and reminds me of some trip-hop. The more R&B based songs aren't really hitting for me as R&B has never really resonated with me. The political lyrics give the music give a greater sense of purpose. Her voice is enjoyable, albeit a little nasally. Ultimately, I think i'd put this at a 3.5 but since I can't, I have to give it a 3 as I wouldn't quite give it a 4.
Really liked this one. Great melodies and rhythm.
3 estrelas
Well produced, ok tier
R& B, hip hop
British hip-hop
I really liked it actually but it suffers from that CD era problem of being too long. An hour is crazy
Di-Na-Mi-Tee is entrancing me--wow, what an opener. The rest reminds me (nicely) of The Fugees-style approach to social commentary, hip-hop, R&B soul. It Takes More is perfect. Now U Want hypnotic.
I liked this album, and it's better than a 3, though I tired of the medium-tempo beats that just kept following one another. Ms. Dynamiteee is cool and the material was personal and told a story and gave a window into the artist's life. That kept this interesting. It did go on longer than necessary — cutting this down to 50 minutes would have made a difference, and I think the title track was my least favorite on the album.
I liked this! More like 3.5
Pretty good beats
Strong hip hop presence with a good, slow flow. The beats are interesting.
Sounds a bit like Ms. Hill.
No idea mang
Saw "Lauryn Hill" as one of the tags, and it's pretty spot on. Just take her and give her a slight Jamaican bend to her singing, and you got Ms. Dynamite. Luckily, I'm a bit of a sucker for Reggae, so this style resonates with me. I might need to explore this "Ragga" genre a bit more. I need a song for the playlist, and I think "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee" will take that honor. It gives me ICP vibes ironically. I'd have added the opening interlude as it's a banger, but at only 50 seconds long, I can't justify it.
alright
Nothing revolutionary, but I have a soft spot for actively British sounding rap Best Song: Dy-Na-Mi-Te Rating: 6/10 Stars: 3
Don't remember this artist, but a couple of tracks (Dy-Na-Mi-Tee) triggered memories so it must have been out there. It was OK
Enjoyed this one, loved the hip/hop/reggae vibes. Favorite Song(s): Dy-Na-Mi-Tee
It's a constant hit and miss. Not a solid album.
Haven't given Ms Dynamite any thought before or since hearing on on 'Lights On' in 2011, so wwas quite suprised to find this album on here. Was pleasantly suprised by the variety in sound - at its best moments its found like Nelly Furtado and Lauryn Hill. The main issue is that the album goes on too long, with too many forgettable songs, and some of the lyricism did make me chuckle
Nice production but the second half is way worse than the first
at its worst there's middling r&b with that 2000's sentimentality that just feels distractingly corny today, at its best there are some REALLY sick and creative beats that prop up some complete bangers. favorite songs are Put Him Out, Afraid 2 Fly, and Krazy Krush. All I Ever is also pretty lovely. 3.5/5 because i am a sexist
meh 4.5/10
Not my genre but not unenjoyable
kind of middle of the road for me, but it was a fine listen and I can certainly appreciate where it was coming from (particularly for the time).
Ramp is FERDA why was the straight heat saved for the second to last track of the album...
Ms Dynamite - now that’s a name I’ve not heard in a long time. And I say that as someone who owns this album. There’s some filler, but the best tracks have held up much better than I was expecting. It’s a promising debut, so it’s a shame she never really delivered on it.
I never heard of Ms. Dynamite before, but I can't say I didn't like it, and even knew some of the songs ("Dy-a-mi-tee", "Seed Will Grow") they probably ended up somewhere on a playlist of mine, but to say this belong to the list of "1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die", well, no. It's definitely pleasant though, I like the flow, the reggae tinted songs and the nineties R'n'B sound, which reminds me of Lauryn Hill and the likes. "Krazy Krush" has that late 90s/early 2000s American R&B girl group vibe- the smooth harmonies, the relationship drama theme, the polished production. It could have easily fit on a TLC or Destiny's Child album from that era, although it is a bit more edgy than the forementioned girl groups. Another track that stands out, apart from "Dy-na-mite", is "Now U Want My Love", it's a great example of how she blended styles. The reggae influence running through the album really sets it apart from American R&B of the time, it's distinctly British in how it weaves together garage, 2-step, reggae, and R&B. Although I won't play it on repeat, I'll keep the album. 3/5
Not bad, not my thing but good example
I forgot about her. I'm pretty sure a poster of hers was hanging in my old school. Best songs: All I Ever, Anyway U Want It
I think the highlight of this album is when "All I Ever" shifts to instrumental.
Surprisingly good. Great beats. I thought it might be too British but actually not so much. This is a good one for this list because if it was not on there I wouldn’t ever have known about it.
= the Beatles
Smart, charming rhymes but the beats and general songwriting style feels a but thin and pedestrian.
Jamaican jazz cat be like "Ja man" I love mystery dungeon
She has much better albums that should be on this list.
Good RnB album, but nothing about it was a must-hear.
It was fine. Not special.
Good enough. Never heard before.
I was actually very pleasantly surprised with this since I had never heard of Ms. Dynamite. Seems like solid hip-hop/r&b of the time. Can't say I'll ever listen to it again but I'm glad I did.
Holy y2k i give it a high three!
First half of the album was a pleasant surprise, then the 2nd half was kinda meh
A lot of fun to listen to. Good lyrical craft mixed with rnb touches.
Loved “It takes more” and “Krazy Krush” but not much after that
Considering how fast her star waned I wasn’t expecting much from this but it was a pleasant surprise Dy-Na-Mi-Tee has an absolute cracker and there are a few other great songs too Nothings terrible This was decent
Not bad. Never heard of Ms. Dynamite before, but there's a nice variety of styles on here and she has a great voice. 3/5
Decent album. It seemed good enough that I'm surprised I've never heard of it before. This isn't my genre but I still preferred this over many similar things. Maybe that's just the novelty of it being new 3/5
Good but a little repetitive
This was pretty good, great flow and a very soulful voice. It's not enough up my alley that I'd listen to it again, but I quite enjoyed this (and it's a welcome reprieve from all the punk and dad-rock this list throws up)
She’s a bit better than expected but I didn’t have high expectations
I didn't think I had heard of this artist, but I vaguely recognized the opening track. I didn't recognize anything else. Love the music on this!! Afraid 2 Fly and All I Ever were favorites. Not typically something I would listen to, but i enjoyed it. 3.5
Has some great grooves.
On ollu huonompiakin tätä Genreä
Ihan jees, ei mitään mieltä räjäyttävää.
Nothing too exceptional about this album…Lauryn Hill lite
After the first few songs I was rather impressed. Goodnlittle hooks and nice performances from Ms. Dynamite for the most part. Then it started to get quite dry and dull, with only a few noteworthy songs from there onward. 5/10
Perfectly pleasant, especially on the sassier tracks. Without any of it being really outstanding. A touch long of course, although that felt less of a problem here than it sometimes is. Nothing really dragged, but beyond the first couple of tracks not a lot stood out either.
sounded good but lacked originality, don’t think it should be on this list but i thought it was ok
Immediate dancehall x rnb vibes. Quite like it. Female empowerment themes. Other hip hop/reggae blending. Best track - Put Him Out 3 stars - wanted to love it, but didnt live up to its potential given its stylistic origins.
surprised me. Maybe because my last few albums were not so modern. This was pretty good, funky, wild lyrics.
more soulful than I expected, and some notable songs, but a bit preachy at times
This feels like warmed over Destiny’s Child, but it is solidly listenable. Quite a bit longer than it should be, though.
Full of bops but also aggressively 2000's
# 🎧 In-Depth Review: Ms. Dynamite - *A Little Deeper* ## 📀 Album Overview *Released:* June 10, 2002 *Label:* Polydor Records *Key Producers:* Salaam Remi, Michael "Punch" Harper, Bloodshy & Avant *Commercial Performance:* Sold 495,000 copies in the UK (as of 2011), won the 2002 Mercury Prize, and received three MOBO Awards and two BRIT Awards . --- ## 📝 Lyrics and Themes ### Strengths - **Social Commentary**: Tracks like "It Takes More" critique materialism and machismo ("We leave this world alone, so who gives a fuck about the things you own?") . - **Personal Narratives**: "Brother" explores family trauma and sacrifice, while "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee" recounts her upbringing with vivid storytelling . - **Empowerment**: "Put Him Out" advocates for self-respect in relationships, and "Watch Over Them" addresses Black-on-Black violence . ### Weaknesses - **Preachy Tone**: Some lyrics come off as overly didactic (e.g., "Sick 'n' Tired") . - **Inconsistency**: Back-half tracks like "Gotta Let U Know" and "All I Ever" feature generic R&B themes . --- ## 🎶 Music and Production ### Style and Innovation - **Genre Fusion**: Blends UK garage, hip-hop, R&B, reggae, dancehall, and neo-soul. Tracks like "Seed Will Grow" (featuring Kymani Marley) incorporate reggae, while "Krazy Krush" experiments with electro . - **Production Quality**: Salaam Remi’s influence (known for work with Fugees and Amy Winehouse) brings warmth and rhythmic complexity, using live instruments and samples (e.g., the vibraphones in "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee") . ### Shortcomings - **Dated Elements**: Some hip-hop and R&B production feels typical of early 2000s trends . - **Inconsistent Pacing**: The album loses momentum after the first half, with filler tracks like "Now U Want My Love" . --- ## 🧐 Themes and Message - **Self-Reflection**: "Afraid 2 Fly" meditates on mortality and vulnerability . - **Social Justice**: "Get Up Stand Up" (hidden track) echoes Bob Marley’s activism, urging resilience . - **Female Empowerment**: Challenges male-dominated genres, paving the way for artists like Lily Allen and Little Simz . --- ## 💡 Influence and Legacy - **Cultural Impact**: First solo Black British woman to win the Mercury Prize, influencing later artists like Amy Winehouse, Ray BLK, and Greentea Peng . - **Genre-Blending Template**: Pioneered a mix of UK garage and socially conscious lyricism, expanding the global appeal of British urban music . --- ## ✅ Pros and Cons ### Pros 1. **Lyrical Authenticity**: Personal and socially relevant themes . 2. **Genre Diversity**: Innovative fusion of musical styles . 3. **Cultural Significance**: Broke barriers for Black British women in music . ### Cons 1. **Inconsistent Quality**: Weak back-half tracks . 2. **Dated Production**: Some sounds haven’t aged well . 3. **Preachy Moments**: Occasional lack of subtlety in messaging . --- ## 🎯 Conclusion *A Little Deeper* remains a landmark album for its bold fusion of genres, social commentary, and empowerment themes. While inconsistences in its second half and dated production hold it back from timelessness, its influence on UK music and legacy as a Mercury Prize winner solidify its importance.
Not bad, but felt a lot like others. It reminded me of a less good version of a Lauryn Hill album. Still, not bad.
Good pop.
Ihan kelpo r'n'b-levy, mutta ihmettelen listalle päätymistä. 3/5
Yes it was ok.
This was way better than I thought it would be. I was full into my alternative kid phase when this came out, so I'm sure I just lumped it in with 'other'. I was aware of Dy-Na-Mi-Tee but I certainly didn't listen to it. Getting the album now, I was expecting more rap / hip-hop, but it's much more melodic and singing-led. It's not my usual cup of tea, but I actually enjoyed pretty much all of it. Dy-Na-Mi-Tee is a stand-out, and has a real chill vibe to it that I like. As an added bonus, it's a real cool album cover.
Solider Rap, waren am Anfang vier, wurde dann aber etwas anstrengend. 3 1/2.
This one is an interesting genre-mix. There's clearly a lot of hip hop, but also elements of R&B and possibly some soul. Some tracks remind me of Amy Winehouse Standouts It Takes More - Bloodshy Main Mix 3/5
Solid storyteller good beats
Sounds like she was working through some stuff. I hope this album helped.
This was a solid R&B album, but not enough to turn me into an R&B fan.
I was jamming and dancing but also thinking and pondering
Not really worth inclusion in the 1001. Not bad, but it's that same stupid UK bias from the author that shows over and over, if you see something random on the list, it's probably a UK act that isn't bringing anything super exciting to the table.
Eh
Weak pick. A Mercury Prize winner so that's why it's here but sometimes the Brits like things only a Brit can like. Or maybe things only half a million Brits can like given its album sales. Reminds me very much of that 2000's diva R&B sound - Jully Black comes to mind but she was only big(ish) in Canada and is not worthy of a nod on this list. Neither is Ms. Dynamite. Both are decent but less impressive versions of Mary J. Blige, who is a legend and so far has not shown up on this list (and I'm closing in on 1,065 albums). The album is also too long - why does it need to be over an hour? All that being said, there's nothing awful about what's here. It's just average and unmemorable.
had some really good tracks i thought, overall the album itself was ok
This was fine for me. She's obviously talented and it wasn't a bad listen at all. I had a hard time seeing what she did on this record that put it on the 1001 albums list. She has good flow but the instrumentals didn't have anything special for me. Felt like pretty standard beats.
this was fine. I got excited early on with some of the reggae inspired beats and bass lines. Her voice is cool and the lyrics are pretty awesome. However, 2000s R&B is hard for me. I think its the cheap sounding drum machine beats that get kind of exhausting.
Surprisingly I haven't heard of Ms. Dynamite before. The album has the best kind of early 00s vibe. Though as with many rap-adjacent albums my complaint is that it's a bit too long 3/5
Entertaining and groovy but fails to have the same earworm quality as rnb contemporaries.
Inoffensive half decent beats with a forgettable and unremarkable vocal performance and writing. 5/10
"Dy-Na-Mi-Tee" will always remind me of the menu screens of Fifa 2003, surprised no one's mentioned that yet! This is a pretty good album, but a bit dated now, and hasn't really stood its ground in the zeitgeist in the same way Lauryn Hill has. I feel like that's maybe an unfair comparison to make, but can see why people make it. I think a lot of the US reviewers on here are misunderstanding how big a deal winning the Mercury Prize is in the UK and Ireland, it's almost like being Grammy nominated, and tends to correlate with critical acclaim and popularity. It's also been a curse for more than one artist who couldn't produce a decent follow up, as might be the case here. Looking back now, The Streets probably should have won that year.
All I know if the lead single from this album, the extremely infectious "Dy-Na-Mi-Tee". But is the rest of the album as good? Like, it's good but it feels like it might have been buoyed along by the explosive lead single. It is very interesting that Ms Dynamite released one more album and has all but retired from the music biz
I'm not a huge hip-hop guy but Ms. Dynamite's sound had some serious range. The beats were solid.
Pas mal mais un peu répétitif dans mes oreilles
Eh. It was fine.
Was this put on here just because it was a Mercury Prize winner? It's fine, but doesn't seem like something I HAD to listen to before I died.
I quite like this style of record. It reminds me a lot of Lauryn Hill, but also of other MCs that followed. I enjoyed it but didn't stand out too much. 3/3.5 Highlight: It takes more
для любителей рнб.
Schöni Stimm...gid ämäl kä schlächti Stimmig
17 songs, huh? Th sound seems very reminiscent of female hip-hop artists at the time. Curious where she falls in the chronological order of people like Erykah Badu and Lauryn Hill and Beyoncé. She’s way after salt n peppa. Her beats felt less complex or interesting to me, but I wonder if it’s more about me than about the music. There are parts that felt really formulaic - like maybe there are requisite types of tracks artists need. I guess I wonder how genuine all the tracks are because she doesn’t sound incredibly lively. She’s got a few 1st person songs that sound like she’s really working through some hardship. Good on her. It’s super rough to get a break.
Alright. Not bad.
Suuuuuper 2002. I kept trying to not compare this to the Miseducation of Lauryn Hill but it was difficult. Musically some songs were more interesting than others, and there were some clever lyrics throughout, but a lot of it felt very didactic. 2.5
I was surprised I didn't know anything off of this, considering how hard i was mainlining 90s-00s R&B radio during the early pandemic
It was ok. I'd say 2.75
A light 3/5 for me. Mostly good messaging and some really clean production. “Dy-na-mi-te” is easily the catchiest of all songs on this project. Great hook, very infectious. “It Takes More” has the best production work, I love the chopped up intro sample. The first half of the closing track is a standout as well, the acoustic guitar is so easy on the ears. Solid vocal presence and bars, nothing I was head over heels about, but M’s. Dynamite holds her own on the mic for sure
Another one which did not stand the test of time. Decent in and of itself, but not a top 1001 in my opinion.
Not my usual music, but really enjoyed this. Good fusion of different genres.
Excellent hip-hop album!
Albumi oli silkka dynaa tunnin, okein mukavaa seurattavaa
I was twelve years old when Dy-Na-Mi-Tee was released and it was such a massive hit, it gives me so much nostalgia-as does It Takes More and Put Him Out. These are three songs that really dominated my playlists of that year, I remember the video for the second song always being on MTV Base in the morning when I got ready for school. There are a few filler tracks in my opinion but they all have a good beat to them. My notable mentions added to the two songs mentioned was Kandy Krush which really got me moving about and Too Experienced which featured Barrington Levy which was fun. This album had a lot of reggae influence which made it really easy to listen to. The last song that had the secret bonus track at the end, was a real treat. The rapper in this track is her brother Akala who is also a writer and activist, his song Shakespeare is worth a listen if you liked this track. I’m glad I got to listen to this album and revisit some songs as an adult
Never heard of the artist, never heard any of the songs. Actually pretty good.
Ms. Dynamite was big at an age where I was starting to notice music so I recognised a lot of this. Sort of liked it from the nostalgia but I don't think it was actually good, felt a bit over produced like she was very much being pushed by the record label. That said, wasn't overly silly or annoying and I did like some of the tracks, middle of the road.
Much better than I was expecting. Dy-Na-Mi-Tee is daft but memorable, and It Takes More was decent too. Nice voice. Not really any missteps, and a pretty pioneering effort. Not quite the British Lauryn Hill, but not bad. I think I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. Lyrics aren't awful either and when she gets into a flow it is solid. Wouldn't come back, but happy to have heard it.
Forgettable
A surprisingly good album. I liked the lyrics for a 00s female led, black rap album. In the age of Destiny's Child and so on, this was just a strong.
Oh yes, women in hip-hop of the early 00s
Better than the other UK rap I've listened to through this, that's for sure.
Better than a lot of modern R&B I've heard. Still not something I'd reach for to listen to but wouldn't turn it off or leave the room if someone else put it on.
This is a really interesting album. Dy na mi tee is still excellent 20 years on and it takes more is relevant now. Bits of the album drag especially when going into pulpit mode. It does sound dated in parts but has there been a better uk female rap album?
good album, would like to read about it more
enjoyable little album
Never heard of her, but I definitely vibes to this. Solid beats, great play of r&b and hip hop. Sorta like a British Lauren Hill almost?
it's not a bad album, I actually really liked her voice but I don't see why it is a "must hear" album...
Muutamat kovat rallit, muuten ihan passeli -tason kappaleita.
I remember being so excited when this won the Mercury since the singles sounded so unlike anything that was going on in UK pop at the time. Listening to it now, it still sounds distinctive and several of the songs are fantastic, but the moralizing in many of the lyrics now come off as a very naive.
Not a bad album. Lacks a real hot song or two. Didn’t know of this before listening, it’s okay. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
Ms. Dynamite is a girl boss. She’s pro “ditch the man who don’t treat you right” and also pro “you only want me cause I’m famous, get outta here.” Explicit, but, for the most part, empowering. I don’t know if I’ll revisit, I’m not the demographic. I’ll give it a 3, but only because it’s better than a 2.
It's quite catchy, liked it more than I thought I would!
well this is definitely from the early 2000s
Funky, cool, some songs are like fresh air to my ancient playlist 3/5
Kinda fun, singing ti-heee all shift! No stand outs though
It was fine. Some good mix of styles
Ok but a little too long for my taste
Not bad, not bad at all..
Chill, buena voz, hip-hop, un poco largo, 6
Not just a British preference, but even a British rapper preference now. Definitely over-represented.
V/rv
A delightful surprise: the missing link between Lauryn Hill and Amy Winehouse.
I did not mind this one bit. Quiet enjoyed it
Not totally original, but a few hits.
I've liked this album more than I've expected to be honest, but I find it too long for what it is.
The hip hop tracks were way better than the R’n’B ones.
Dy-Na-Mi-Tee // It Takes More //
Great voice. It didn’t stand out too much to me in terms of differentiating from other early 2000’s R&B, but Ms. Dynamite, who I had not heard of prior to this, has a fantastic voice and the production on the album sounds great as well.
Pretty great! Hard to believe I've never heard of her before, since hip hop is such a big part of my music life.
7.5/10
Than what?
I liked this more than I expected. That is not saying much since I hate most top 40ish pop. This at least had some maturity lyrically.
Some bangers. Got a bit too long IMO.
Not my music style, but still a nice album.
I liked this album.
This is the first time I’ve ever even heard of Ms Dynamite, and I was impressed. She’s really got a nice voice, and this being her debut album she came through with a lot of stories about life before fame. Solid project, reminded me a lot of Lauryn Hill
2 1/2 Stars. First half of the album is pretty basic. Starting with the track with Marley which is a banger, the rest of the album is tighter.
Liked this more than I expected. It's like an Amy Winehouse/Lauryn Hill mashup. Some good melodies on here, especially in the stronger front half. The latter half is weaker and could be cut down a fair bit (which would probably make it a 4*) but all in all not bad. 'Put Him Out' and 'Brother' my favourite tracks.
Better than I expected for an early 00's hip-hop album, but no so much that I'd really care to revisit it anytime
Is this project/site based out of the UK? There have been a lot of UK artists that I have listened to but have never heard of . This isn't my favorite kind of music, but wasn't terrible to listen to. Not sure why this album is in this project.
Tremendo album, alta voz y tema favorito put him out. Hay temas que son un poco salteables, y la primer parte del disco es superior a la segunda parte.
Went in fulling expecting to dislike this, but was genuinely surprised at how good this was. had some honest lyrics with a good message and well crafted songs overall.
Way better than i thought it would be. A very very high 3
Lyrics were pretty cheesy but the beats were infectious. I remember listening to groups like this in the 90s and enjoying them, and I don't like this one as much even though she probably has more talent. Makes me realize how much nostalgia matters when judging music. 3.5 stars
Solid instrumentals and a few good verses, but mostly a bit too repetitive for my taste in rap/hip-hop. Still not a bad listen though. 6.4/10
Yes. I dig this
Rappers femininas cativam muito mais!
Impeccably produced! Sounds great on headphones. Fizzles out at the end. Overall pretty good. 3.35
3 because 2 seemed too low and this didn’t make me mad like other wnglish rap options on the list could i write poetry to this? n
This was better than I expected it to be. Seemed to drag a bit.
A surprisingly diverse range of sounds and styles, the album kept me engaged the whole hour and three minutes. Sadly, the themes and lyrics did not speak to me. Solid album, just not for me.
This is okay and chill, but don't know why it is special/included on the list...??
Lauren Hill-eque
Rating: 5.5/10 Decent but overall not memorable.
6/10
Not bad, not great. I enjoyed listening to it. This artist was definitely really far off my radar. It's tough because they sound a lot like other music I've heard, and I have no grasp of how original this album was when it dropped.
Not bad, but this album didn't really grab my attention.
She was clearly influenced by Lauren Hill - which comes through without it feeling like a parody or imitation. It's a solid hip hop album.
Ok, some good songs, some ok songs. I probably won't listen again but I didn't hate. And man, people hating on UK rap. What are you even here for? Just stick to Spotify. Sorry rant over. Three stars.
- ..... well crafted but sort-of generic. -
I thoroughly enjoyed this way more than I thought I would! I could totally listen to this again.
I think we all had that feeling, seeing a female rap artist pop up for your daily album, only to be crushed by the news that shes british. As if females didnt have enough trouble producing palatable hip hop, the brits have some how come up flatter. This however is a revelation. Missy Elliot and Lauren Hill had competition no one knew about
6.5/10. I honestly struggle to say much was wrong with this album tbh, that doesn't mean it is up there with the best because I think maybe it was missing the album defining hooks and melodies that stay with you afterwards, but there's really a lot to like. It has solid classic hip hop beats and some of the 'smoother' tracks towards the end has some lovely chords. Lyrically I was a big fan with very to the point lyrics but often with reasonably personal or poignant messaging at times. Very solid indeed but maybe not bringing anything new to the table.
2.5 I think.
Not my kind of music but it had some substance to it and there were a few bits that had me bopping
Another one of those albums that aren't my style but I'm glad I heard
🎧Pretty good stuff. Nice R&B that mixes in a couple other genres—ragga, soul. Favorite tracks: Dy-Na-Mi-Tee, Brother
I remember the stupidly annoying Dy-Na-Mi-Tee being played to death on the radio when it came out before disappearing, never to be heard again (thankfully). Because of that I really wasn't looking forward to listening to this album. Luckily it's better than I feared. This one's a bit of a strange beast, swinging wildly between socially conscious lyrics and pedestrian blather. The backing tracks are generally good and engaging. Ms. Dynamite is basically the Temu version of Lauryn Hill. Looks the goods at a glance but doesn't hold up to close scrutiny.
A principios de siglo Ms Dymanite estaba en todas las listas de Next Big Thing. Su álbum de debut tuvo un merecido éxito de crítica y ventas. Sus dos sencillos It takes more y Dy-na-mi-tee eran estupendos.
Pretty good and very nostalgic but not a lot of stand outs musically. Good lyrics. Love and remember Dy-Na-Mi-Tee, and Put Him Out and Seed Will Grow are good. Love the backing of Afraid 2 Fly - reminds me of Show Me The Money by Petey Pablo.
While the lyrics are about as boilerplate as you can get for early-aughts hip hop, the beats and melodic-side of the songwriting really delivers through most of the album. Unfortunately that does little to tamp down the surface-level emotional depth of the bars. 3.1/5
Meh, It’s not awful. Not my taste, so it’s hard for me to really judge, but I don’t see why it’s on this list. It doesn’t have anything about it that particularly stands out, so I would think something a little more well known and of greater significance to music as a whole would have been put on instead. Again, not my genre, but I’ve never even heard of this artist and it doesn’t appear it was a very big selling album relatively. I suppose 3/5: it’s not bad, won’t listen to it again but didn’t hate it, wish I had the option for 2.5
New album/artist. Dy-Na-Mi-Tee is great, but the rest of it didn’t stick with me.
Such a smooth flow throughout, it brought me into a positive head space. It is an expression from a self-respecting woman, though the recurring theme was along the lines of 'men... ugh... men...'
Didn't expect to like this album but I do like most of it.
It could be the rebound after recent Leonard Cohenization, but I didn't hate this like I expected. Some of the songs were catchy and her voice had a hint of Amy Winehouse.
Not something I would typically listen to, but enjoyed it. Solid 3.
I think this started off very strong, had a real pow to it and such a mix of genres. It then descended into samey sameness that I couldn't distinguish from one another. It was just a blur by the end of it and I got bored. Shame as I did genuinely love the beginning few tracks
I assume this is just probably what good R&B sounds like from this time period. I wouldn't know. This was fine for sure.

This is pretty good but wtf does it do on this list
3/5 Wouldn't listen to it in my own free time, but it is a pretty good album.
pretty grape :D
pretty nice but I won't be raving about it from any rooftops
Wanted to like it, but past the singles it’s pretty average
I enjoyed it even though it's not the kind of music I typically listen to
This was fine enough, pleasantly listenable but won’t be revisiting.
