Reviews (page 4 of 7)
Fuzzy wuzzy.
I don't remember anything standing out from this. Does sound like a 90s Kevin Smith movie in album form.
Pretty good. We were traveling, so I didn't get a close listen, but I liked what I heard.
Aight
Some songs get a little too close to noise for me. Overall it's a fun album though.
generally vibey. kinda proto-Pavement, cool skateboard music. when the guitar riffs feel samey and the vocals get stale the album gets a little trying, but then some sick sounds come out and it's back to being dope. definitely some golden tracks on there. favorite song is No Bones, maybe Let It Ride if it was like half as long. solid 3.4/5
Dinosaur Jr. is an American rock band formed in Amherst, Massachusetts, in 1984. The band was founded by J Mascis (guitar, vocals, primary songwriter), Lou Barlow (bass, vocals), and Murph (drums). After three albums on independent labels, the band earned a reputation as one of the formative influences on American alternative rock. Creative tension led to Mascis firing Barlow, who later formed Sebadoh and Folk Implosion. His replacement, Mike Johnson, came aboard for three major-label albums. Murph eventually quit, with Mascis taking over drums on the band's albums before the group disbanded in 1997. The original lineup reformed in 2005, releasing five albums thereafter. 6 Dragons out of 10 Lizard Wizards
It was fine. Nothing stood out as exceptional and won’t enter rotation but it was fine.
Was pretty close to a 4 and then heard "Don't" and now its solidly a 3
I'm familiar with Dinosaur Jr.'s "Where You Been" album, but not this one. This album just isn't grabbing me. If I want to listen to Dinosaur Jr., I'd go with "Where You Been" before this one.
Yeh was alright
Mostly noice rock but much more melodic than expected.
There is a certain charm to this kind of lo-fi noise rock, even if it wears thin after a while. The raw aggression is palpable, even when the recording quality makes it feel like a demo tape rather than a finished product. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions - Freak Scene - No Bones - They Always Come
That last song just kinda ruined the entire thing for me. The first part was really good, but that dragged the entire thing down hard.
3+ Stars (9/15)
First song had me worried, but then it improved a lot
Pretty good
485/1001 🌕🌕🌕🌑🌑
Decent background music, pretty grunge-y for '88
3/5
Much like an impressive fart the instrumentals are great but you’re left dealing with the stench, in this case lyrics and vocals.
Never heard of this band or album before. Would describe it as pure electric guitar slop But I actually found it pretty fun
Started off strong but had to skip a song when they started considering loud screaming as music at the end.
A few standout tracks I'll definitely listen to again. I was aware of this band back when I was a grunge kid, but I don't have any lasting memories of them or their music. I don't mind the vocals, although they do wane over the course of the album. Everything else is good, noisy, just the way I like it.
Bueno
not my favorite Dinosaur album, but still a good listen!
Liked this more than I thought, but I am still just not getting Dinosaur Jr.
I know Dinosaur Jr. are icons of the late 90's stoner rock and grunge scene and have had huge influence on alot of bands I love. The songs of theirs I knew before listening to this album I all really liked. I did hear some bits throughout this album that I liked but as a whole it didn't quite click with me. I think I was waiting for a bit more of a hook in each song. Maybe if I have it another go and had a bit more familiarity with the track list I would feel differently but none of these songs really jumped out as singles. As a whole I thought the album was still super cohesive and played well from start to finish - just missing any standout tracks or sounds that would make me stop to appreciate what I was listening to.
interesting. strong grunge vibes. redundant at times, but not terrible.
Interesting band and album name. The album takes a wild turn with the song Don’t, what starts as a dirty grungy country vibe turns into straight wailing metal-like screaming. I wouldn’t say it’s my vibe but I don’t hate it. 6/10
I like grunge, but not a fan of noise rock, usually... this one is kind of in between the two, which makes it hard to rate. I think if it wasn't quite as noisy, I would have given it a 4, but overall, I think it's a 3.4.
They had me in the first half fr, then they got to screaming at the end of the album so they lost me.
Interesting album. Unique and enjoyable, but not memorable.
Gives Nirvana
More of the same. Not terribly interesting.
The guitar work is outstanding but the vocalist is terrible, like they dragged in the first guy they saw on the street. That averages out at a 3.
Kinda driving me crazy that they remind me of a band I like from years back with similar whiney vocals that I can't quite draw into memory. I've listened to this album multiple times, hating it one time, really starting to like it the next, then back again - it sounds a lot better to me on ear buds than full blast stereo, that's part of the back and forth I think - love the thrashy speedy wall of fuzz noisy fuck you guitar, don't love that the fuzzed out vocals and really uninteresting, so far, white-noised out lyrics. But I'm listening to Let it Ride as I write this and, damn that's good! On the fence, 3 twinkly stars.
I'm pretty neutral on this album. I feel like the instrumentation had a lot of potential. But then the vocals would come in and I'd often hope for something different. But, at times the vocals really fit the style. Others it just felt annoying
I think some of the songs were a bit abrasive with the high pitched scratchy noises going on as well as the couple of songs where he was screaming. Enjoyed the songs where the Decibels and pitch weren't spiking to uncomfortable levels all for the sake of being a bit edgy. Bonus points though for the album art, album title and band name. All very funky and creative, I'm into it. Wish I was into it more so I could say "Yeah I'm big into Dinosaur Jr. these days". 6.5/10
Solid alternative rock with lots of gritty guitar
A good late 80’s grunge record.
It wasn’t too bad. Fun and interesting. I liked it.
Grungy, distorted, enjoyable. Probably a grower.
This was ticking along nicely, let's just try & ignore the penultimate track and imagine a world where it doesn't exist. That one abomination aside I enjoyed it
A mixed bag for me. Some songs I liked, some I didn't. Definitely one I need to give another listen.
Cockslappingly good
A pretty good bridge to grunge never been as entranced with the band as others but thy are also never really terrible.
I don’t know about this one, I couldn’t really get into it, but the couple songs with the more screaming style of vocals were better than the others. I’ll be generous since it wasn’t actively annoying and say 2.5 rounds to 3 stars.
Pretty good - no real new discovery, but I enjoyed it.
I only knew hits back in the day, but I always liked the fuzz on Dino Jr albums. This album certainly brought the fuzz! I think I liked Let it Ride or Don't the most, there were a few clunkers too. Pretty solid overall
never heard of these guys.
Too noisy
Noise rock. Started better than it finished.
Again, this is one of those bands that I missed in the late 80s, and it is a bit of a shame because despite what it actually is and where it sits in musical history, it is a rock and roll statement against the synthy shine of most late 80s production value. Even now, it is strong and rooted in rock - less of a forerunner for grunge and more of a demand for more raw rock sound.
This drones on and on. I get what they’re doing and I don’t dislike it but grunge made this way more tolerable.
Not their best IMO. It was okay.
Not bad, and really liked the related song playlist that came after the album a lot
This was cool. I could hear a lot of my favourite artists inspirations in this one. I thought the average for this would be around 3.50 but apparently people like it less apparently lmao.
Late 80s Indie rock. Fan favourite. Grungy, sounds like the early 90s.
Ratings: 5: I will happily play this album anytime 4: I may occasionally play this album of my own free will 3: I will happily listen to this if someone plays it in the background 2: I will tolerate this if it is playing in the background 1: I will leave the room if someone plays this in the background If you're guitar based and doing something interesting you're almost always going to get a 3 from me unless there is something that offends my ears. This was sometimes interesting but nothing was overly memorable. I can hear elements that would influence what came later, but I don't know that I needed to hear this before I die.
Fun rock album, some tracks were a little to heavy for me but there were some good ones in the middle. The drumming and guitar work was excellent but over all it had very poor mixing. Great album for a workout.
I’ve listened to you’re living all over me a good amount but liked this more
I enjoyed it as some 90's early 2000's alt rock, but then I looked at the release date and was more impressed. This is pretty impressive for 1988 and the guitar is amazing. The vocals are just okay, which is probably part of the reason they didn't become more mainstream. For me I really enjoyed the first half and have to give them props for being early in this music styling. The second half started to drag a little and then Don't was just too screamy.
Dinosaur Jr. has the apathetic noise thing pretty much perfected. This album sounds similar to Daydream Nation by Sonic Youth. I might have liked this more in the 90’s, but I’m mostly over this style of music now.
I feel like these guys would be really fun live, because they rock out really hard. But listening to the studio recording on a home speaker, it feels too muffled and distorted to match the kind of energy I imagine they bring to the stage.
Started great. But as the songs progress they are each not as good as the last
Decent.
Were there moments where this was great? Yes. Were there also moments where this sounded like a bad garage band playing their first gig at 6 p.m. on a Wednesday at a dive bar? Also yes. Three feels simultaneously too high and too low a rating but I don’t want to over think it so three stars it is.
Pretty intense but nice
bom
If you like noise rock, this is the album for you. While the songs themselves don't feel incredibly distinct, the band's use of feedback and distortion is honestly pretty cool, and I get the impression like they want me to feel like I'm listening to them live in a small club (which I'd greatly prefer over listening to the recorded stuff).
I liked this so much better than You're Living All Over Me. Still didn't love it, but it was a major improvement. There were actually songs I liked on here rather than hated less. "Freak Scene" and "Keep The Glove" were both pretty good. The only song I absolutely hated was "Don't," and it reminded me of all the things I hated about their previous album. Dinosaur Jr. is never going to be a favorite of mine, but this was a big improvement from their last album on the list.
Vähän tulee sellainen varhainen pop punk mieleen. Ihan jepaa mutta ei mitää kauhean ihmeellistä. Loppupäästä el niin välittänyt kun se meni enemmän noiseksi. Parhaat: They Always Come, Freak Scene
I know they’re not part of the Seattle scene (I had assumed they were), but they definitely have that Foo, Pearl, Nirvana grungy sound. At least some of the time. Not really the stuff I gravitate to, but not unenjoyable.
Ok
Decent sound, but Don't was annoying.
No ha sido mi rollo, pero ha sido una buena experiencia.
Sounds like early 90s from the 80s
A lot to like, but too noisy / buzzy for me to really love it.
solid album, "don't" was a bit much for me but i honestly still liked it. overall im thinking a 3 but i could see this being a 4
I don't mind the odd song by Dinosaur Jr. in a playlist, but after listening to two albums, I can't really tell each song apart.
Favorite Track: Freak Scene
Definitely some high energy music! Won't be part of the regular rotation.
Pretty decent, can see the inspiration to other bands of a similar ilk.
okay but a bit raucous for me
I can understand that some people may not like this; it's loud and it's unpolished. However, as a fan of this kind of alternative rock, I'm the target audience for this album. Still don't think it's particularly inspired. Pretty cool though!
I don't know anything about this band. Pleasantly surprised by the first track. Some of these songs sound a lot like what I normally listen to, but it does lose me at times. Some of these are quite tedious and don't really work for me, but others I quite liked. Highlight is probably Freak Scene. 3/3.5
A bit crap, good opening track (Freakscene) but nothing else to note
2.9 // poorly mixed, grungy, rage-y towards the end
This was alright, didn't listen to the whole thing but what I heard was good on the whole
Eh neutral towards it
It’s ok but the song “Don’t” is hilariously bad.
Torn on this, after a slow start the music is pretty compelling. Vocals are laughably bad at first, then they get slightly better but they’re still not really good. I do really like the mid section of this album, but it’s a lot of hits and misses overall. The screaming on Don’t is awful but it’s kinda funny so in a weird way I like it? The desperation of it is relatable too. I’m just perplexed by this. At least it’s not a boring listen!
Pretty cool. Reminds me of a certain Canadian band that rhymes with HapanFroids
Not too bad - pretty thrashy for the 80s which is cool.
Very solid 80's indie rock. Nothing super incredible, but very good from front to back.
Not their best, but ok.
Fun listen
I liked this a little more than the Dinosaur Jr. album I recently had on this list. It's still a little unrefined, but I thought it was a good album. 3.5/5 Might listen again
Decent grunge with some nice riffs and the drumming is very grunge-esque aswell, my main complaint though is the sound quality and lack of direction a bit as it sounds like the songs are a bit generic but with distorted guitars and loud drums to sound grunge, it also doesn’t really sound like it’s mixed all that well but maybe they intentionally did it that way to sound more raw but it sounds too raw as if it was was just straight up recorded in a garage, which again might be the intention. Not bad though, overall 5.5/10.
“Freak Scene” got my attention, as did “Don’t,” (mostly for the screaming), otherwise it was fine but just not my style of alternative I guess.
Noisy but melodic. Brash but not punk. Dinosaur Jr. seems to straddle a lot of lines here. Ultimately, their influence on indie rock is probably overshadowed by those who have done it better. No tracks stood out to me as favorites. The reverberating guitar is all that is imprinted in my mind.
Whatever. FUCK the last song.
It’s fuzzy but you can see the inspiration
Somewhere between grunge and alternative indie lies Dinosaur Jr. Overall, I enjoyed the album. The album is not really a precursor to anything. It just is.
Cool album, not a huge fan of the last 2 songs
for some reason I always thought dinosaur jr as a sort of primus-esque funk metal band and I have no clue why. there's a lot of interesting guitar tones/effects throughout the album, especially in "no bones" where it sounds like a lightsaber for some reason. sadly, there isn't much else that's interesting about this album - it kinda just languishes in its own midness for a while. favorite song: "no bones" overall: 6/10
i thought this was cool. can hear the influence of this on albums that came later, even if i don’t love his voice i sure do love guitars
Rockin.
Pleasantly surprised by this (other than "Don't" which is god awful) considering I've never even heard of them before. I would probably give it a 3.5 which I would have rounded to 4 if not for "Don't" offending my ears so badly that they lose a point.
Fine
Overall good 90s indie rock album with a few standout out songs. I listened to this multiple times.
I mean, it’s kinda fun, kinda one note, gives some cut rate Frank Black vibes. I don’t hate it, but I don’t love it, either. I’m not sure why it’s on this list; it doesn’t feel like it’s particularly noteworthy. I remember liking their other albums more. I guess it’s a 3?
'Why don't you like me?' Omdat je je zo aanstelt, doei.
психи...
Enjoyed this , nothing life changing but I'm also a big fan of dinosaur Jr album covers
first listen decent
A bit too screamy for me at points, but some good noises and beats too.
3/5 loved the twangy guitars on a few of the songs - don't like Don"t
Sonic Youth, Dinosaur Jr., The Pixies, X...the early alternative music scene is on full display in this list. All of these songs sound the same. I don't dislike them, but there's not much variety and it is very noisy. I can't tell if I like them more as it goes on or less. I bet The Flaming Lips love this album. I do not like Don't. Six minutes of guitar distortion and yelling is not a good six minutes. College radio in the late 80s must have been insane. This is not nearly as good as You're Living All Over Me.
An album of highs and lows.
Never heard this before but really has a 90s sound, so must have been pretty influential
Don't liet me bijna 2 geven
I like don’t know what’s going on but I had a blast
Kinda sounds like off-brand Replacements.
Solider Reck ohne Ear Catcher.
It is what it says on the tin. It really is like a bug. Somewhat annoying, but somewhat good and even some parts cute and enjoyable. Most of it is annoying...
Eh. Pixies-at-home
loud :<
Didn't really hit me in the way I thought it would.
I listened to most of this album and I do plan on finishing it before listening to my next. This was a solid rock album listen but it didn’t blow me away and there weren’t any standout tracks for me personally. But maybe I need to give it another chance.
This album is fine, nothing really to write home about though. It kind of just feels like noise.
Ahhh, late 80s alternative. Gotta slam in some distorted noise to qualify for those bonifides. There's enough listenable stuff on here to garner its inclusion in this list, I suppose, but also gonna be a couple here I don't need to revisit. They Always Come ftw I guess.
I can see how mbv drew inspiration for their debut album from this
alt rock
I didn't mind it in parts, it definitely started stronger than it finished. I guess that's not too hard when it finished with this guy just yelling and screaming at me. Maybe I'm missing something crucial but there wasn't much justification for there being two Dinosaur Jr. albums on the list. I got the gist.
Not a particularly memorable album for me.
Trodde ja skulle hata det här, men är positivt överraskad allt förutom låten Don't var väldigt intressant. Stark 3
Not quite my vibe but undeniably a good listen. I don’t really have much experience with screamo songs but I felt like that was the one that stood out to me the most. Probably won’t be returning to this one very much but still fun nonetheless
Nice.
This is okay, I guess. I'll go 3/5, but it's on the lower end. Maybe a 2.6
Always wanted to like this band, just based on the name. But I just never took to them. This was...ok. Nothing hooked.me, but it was good...ish.
Sounds early 90s. Not sure about the last couple of tracks though; sound like they belong on a different album.
Straight up fuzzed out midtempo guitar rock from a group that's been doing it excellently for 40+ years. Not super remarkable, but not bad either. 3/5
Appreciate this album as a classic but not exactly my genre
Bug is the third studio album from Dinosaur Jr., and the last with the original bassist Lou Barlow, until their 2007 regrouping. The band is primarily the work of J Mascis, the singer, guitarist, and songwriter for the group. Driven by the success of "Freak Scene" - a late 80s college radio hit - Bug has become known as a "before they became famous" work from a band that helped shape alt-rock of the 90s.
I love the slacker rock, loose vibes of the whole thing. Love the vocal delivery too. 6/10
Grungy
Ok grunge
Dinosaur Sr. did it better.
Liked some songs, not all.
It's frenetic, but I don't like it as much as their 90s output, which is probably just an age thing on when I was introduced to them.
The Wagon autoplayed after I listened to this album and it was much better than these tracks. 2.6.
Not my favorite album by them. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 3/5
Ah, that glorious guitar sound. One of the loudest gigs I've ever seen, and J Mascis at infinity volume is a life affirming way to get tinnitus and I'm up for that. Album does drag a bit at the end but glad to have it here.
Ok
Great finding.
Never really listened to much Dinosaur Jr … now realising I should have listened to more. I liked the noise 😃
I'd go 3.5 if I could
Rating: 7/10 Overall very good but the noise is at times overwhelming and detracts from the album.
Ooh a very good alt rock band born out of the grunge scene. Goes hard. They have better albums but this one is very solid. Freak Scene, Pond Song, no Bones, They Always Come, Budge are my standouts.
Well, it's an OK album, but nothing to really get excited about.
A lost chance. The guitar game was amazing, but the voice on the first tracks and the last sounds like a Nickelodeon high school band, super commercial, without being it. "Don't" is amazing by the way, it carries the album 7/10
Es rarito PERO me gusta
I like Dinosaur Jr more than Sonic Youth or Husker Du, bands I feel have a similar sound.
Big ugly fun. Even the five-minute “Don’t”, which is J Mascis howling “whyyyy don’t you liiiike me” over and over.
Meh
I enjoyed some of the songs in the beginning but the end left a bad taste. Reminds me a little bit of Smashing Pumpkins and a more digestible version of Sonic Youth. High 3.
don't was so grating to listen to so so loud did not like, rest of it was whatever
Just about all Dinosaur Jr. songs sound the same to me.
Found this to be pretty mediocre.
6/10 The papa to the Pixies mama of 90's alternative. I never heard them in their hayday but I've heard them in every 90's grunge song since then. Good stuff, but nothing stands out. 2-12-2025
Could have been a four but Don’t automatically drops it a point
Yeah. It’s ok. Better than I thought it would be.
Dinoauru.. pipsapossusta tuttu huudahdus...
Pre-grunge grunge. I thought it was a solid early grunge album, and it seems like they were ahead of their time in that sense.
This was slightly more tolerable than their other album from this list, even though the overwhelming amount of guitar feedback tried to convince me otherwise. The underlying rock rhythms were better this time around.
This is pretty good. Freak Scene is a strong opening and I enjoy the distorted guitars. There's some awesome drumming on this album as well, I noticed it a lot and wouldn't normally pay great attention to this. The drumming around the mini pauses in They Always Come really drives the song strongly I found it starts to sound more droney as the album goes on. Don't is a pretty unpleasant song. Capping my score at 3
I have heard of Dinosaur Jr and have heard a couple songs on the radio. Did not hear any of the songs I thought I would hear, but still found this to be a pretty decent album. Overall had the kind of a vibe and sound I generally enjoy. Have to point out, my spotify kicked into Wire, Mudhoney, Fugazi and the like so it got even better when the album was over. Again, not a bad album, but there wasn't anytime I felt the need to download anything. It had some good tunes and a couple that went hard and punkish. Thought they mixed up their sound and songs pretty good. Freak Scene and No Bones stood out, but I also enjoyed Don't. Don't was quite a bit different than the rest of the album and can't explain why, but I dug it. Decent but not great. Pretty much down the middle for me, but did enjoy my listens. 3
3.5 The second that I saw a lot of reviews complaining about this album being a lot of noise, I had a feeling it was going to be something that I’d like. Granted, I’ve also enjoyed most things I’ve heard by Dinosaur Jr. in the past, so I went into this pretty positively predisposed. Sure enough, right off the bat, I really, really enjoyed the first track on the album, Freak Scene. It’s a catchy track that manages to feel both fun and raw, while also being accompanied by some solid lyrics to boot. I really enjoyed J Mascis’ vocal delivery on the track as well, which had a talk-sing dynamic to it that reminded me a bit of Pavement. The song pretty quickly went into my Liked Songs playlist on Spotify, and I was surprised to learn right after that my boys in blink-182 have a cover of the song that was recorded for their first demo - though, if you find this album unlistenable, then prepare yourself for that recording. However, beyond Freak Scene, the album seems to slowly devolve both in a sense of memorable songwriting and overall listenability, to the point that Don’t had me nodding my head and sympathizing with all the detractors who called this album pure noise, especially considering it’s the longest song here. (Though fun note - blink-182’s third demo, Buddha, also ended with a song called Don’t. Maybe they’re bigger fans of the band than I realized?) I digress, I really don’t see myself seeking out the song ever again for any reason. That all to say, while largely unmemorable, the album as a whole still generally had an enjoyable enough of an alt rock vibe to it that no song (aside from Don’t) would ever feel unwelcome in the shuffle, especially when put between artists like Sonic Youth, Pixies, and the aforementioned Pavement. I could see myself maybe giving this a full listen again, but if so, I can tell you one thing, it’s not going to be through my frayed Apple earbuds at the gym. Headphone warning for anyone out there yet to give this a listen - you better have yourself a nice pair, or you’ll have random intervals of feedback fired straight into your eardrums at high velocity while trying to do front squats. But then again, that’s rock n roll, baby.
It was okay, kind of forgettable.
Cool
Decent listen
Did they invent 90s rock? This almost rules - like 2 inches away from being actually good. 3.99999
Random thoughts throughout the album Track #2, no bones sounds like lead singer is whining. For 1988 I'm surprised at how developed some of the guitar parts are. Energy from Don't surprised me, was not expecting legit screaming. Never heard of this band, will look into their wikipedia on why they made it to this 1001 albums list.
3.75
This album started off enjoyable enough, but there was a distinct tonal shift with Don't which we really did not enjoy.
Close to a 4 star. I enjoyed a lot of this but it was more raw of an album than I like, though I could see that part being a plus to others. Proto grunge
Alright indie rock punk. Perfect small rowdy venue sound
Marskej mi je vsec in vidm podobnost z unim pop rockom k ga poznam recmo, ampak drgac mi je pa kr mau prevec intense
Oh what a Mess. Listened to freak scene a lot, way back when, being an anthem of sorts for that gen X/slacker vibe. Rest of the album isn’t quiet up to that mark, but highly influential all the same on bands like Nivarna and the indie and grunge scene of the early 90’s
Better as a middle of the road pop group than when they revert to screamo mode.
Dig Dinosaur Jr. But this didn't really do it for me. 3
I can hear where Nirvana & Foo Fighters got their inspiration from. An okay listen.
Dinosaur jr Was ein name. No bones, na e big up track. 3 Stegosaurus vum nedisaurus senior
was isch den das für es chäferfest sind die songtitel ezt würklich chäfer inspiriert oder nöd freak scene, no bones, they always come, pond song, usw es paar lieder sind irgendwie no catchy gsi, so chli noisy stuff mit öppertem wo normal mit dir reded unds aber gsang nennet - chammer mache aber denn au ganz komische stuff widermal en gischte sack voll chäfer 3000 cucarachas
this one is so tricky! I love dinosaur jr. but I’m a little baffled by Bug being their album on this list. I know the band hated it, but probably because they were on the verge of breaking up. certainly not my favorite of theirs, but I appreciated listening to it in its entirety (since I usually skip “don’t”)
I was originally thinking 2.5 (3) for the same reason as Sex Pistols bc it’s Sex Pistols in a grungier font. It’s noisy. However I think it deserves a 2. I’m not sure if it’s inherently worse than Sex Pistols. I’m trying to be fair here. If I wasn’t being fair I’d give it a one because I’m sick of noisy music. Sorry Stirling.
Solides und kreatives Rockalbum, die letzten beiden Songs zusammen/nacheinander waren mein highlight Ist leider nicht gut gemischt und produziert
A precursor to grunge. Can definitely hear how it influenced Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Soundgarden and the rest of the Seattle scene. Not perfect but pretty good. Didn't mind the dissonance.
3 stars
I really like the sound of this, the guitar-driven rock, it has all the ingredients to be great - except tunes. There just aren't any melodic hooks to hold on to. I like the vocal style. the backing vocals, the drums, bass and guitar - it's all there except the songs.
I liked the abrasiveness of it but the production annoyed me after a while. It was quite thin sounding
Thought I would like this more. I enjoyed the first half but the second half started grating on me. Solidly in my wheelhouse but not going to become a relisten in the genre.
Dinosaur Jr is insanely influential for music that I really like, but I think they have better albums than this one.
this was pretty good. got a little weird in the middle but finished strong.
Not bad. Alright.
You would like this album if you identify with a voice crack
Solid rock! Not for me these days, but I think I would have been much more into them before I crested that hill of life.
I don’t love dinosaur jr, so I’m not thrilled about this album. It’ll probably be three stars. That said, it’s not from the 70s, so that’s something. Yeah, it's exactly what I thought. fine, I guess. I find the lyricist whiny and boring, but it doesn't suck. 3 stars it is. Ho hum.
I can see how foundational this was for 90s lo-fi, indie, and maybe even proto-emo, but eugh. I just really don't like sludgy, ugly music like this. there were actually a few points in some of the songs i quite liked, but they were soon buried under either a wall of discordant fuzz or wailing. also i kind of think maybe you should have a good voice to be the lead singer of a band...? crazy but true? IDK!!!
Dinosaur Jr. is music for guitarists. The most interesting parts of the songs are pedals and solos. I'm not a guitarist so...the ceiling for any Dinosaur Jr. song is a 3. J Mascis is not a singer and this is not an album I would have on as background music nor is it boppy enough to have as ROCK OUT music. Just like the mighty tyrannosaurus rex, Dinosaur Jr. and Gen X shoegazers will die and I won't think about them much.
This could have been a 4 or 5 album but this mix is terrible. I thought my speakers were broken at first. WIll have to do more digging on Dino Jr. because I liked what I heard, it just sounded like i had ear muffs on or something.
Massachusetts boys! I've been to maybe 5 concerts in the last three years and somehow two of them were Dinosaur Junior, so I think I've tried to convince myself they were better than they actually were. They play incredibly loud - and J Mascis goes off on most songs, but they often fall into a kind of 'wall of sound' approach where it feels like their main goal is to blast you away. To me, the effect of that is usually more distancing than engaging. "Freak Scene" is an awesome song, and I like a few others. But too often they favor dissonance to melody, and the album suffers from a lack of texture: they don't mix up either the volume or the rhythm enough - so it all has a flattening, almost hostile effect after awhile. The listener leaves with ringing in their ears and need for some peace and quiet. Or maybe I'm just old.
I get the significance of Dinosaur Jr (80s pre grunge and new punk influence). I dont believe this is their strongest stuff and the album itself doesnt hold my attention well. It wasnt all boring: Yeah We Know was a good tune. Freak Scene was alright. Pond Song was good. Budge was fun (sounded like blink 182). Dont was striking in a refreshing way. I want to give 3.5 stars. And im afraid of rounding this one up to make a stronger point, so in a rare move, ill push it back to 3 stars
This is OK. Freak Scene almost reminded me of The Undertones, but without the class. Not really my scene, and it’s all a bit relentless at times, and not in a particularly good way. But it’s OK. I might not listen again, but I’ve heard a lot worse and at a few seconds over 35 minutes for the original release I’m happy I listened. Bit of a shame about Don’t really; that sort of spoils it. To the extent that I had to skip it. The non-original Keep the Glove is a much better ending, and a half-decent tune into the bargain. It doesn’t really fit, so I can see why it wasn’t on the original LP, but more of that would go down better with me.
Kinda cool!!
Day310 - a little of this goes a long way but i’ve always liked dinosaur jr. and their sloppy guitar sound
this was a pretty neutral, sometimes catchy album up until the song Don’t. then for that one song it turned into the album i assumed it would be based on the album art and band photo. that single song almost knocked this down from a 3 to a 2 star album but luckily there were more times where i was pleasantly surprised then when they were screaming in my ears so we’ll stick with a low 3
Sounds Grungy. Was able to listen to the whole album except for one song.
Growing up, I felt like all of the coolest older kids were into Dinosaur Jr. I never quite got it though. I can see comparisons with Sonic Youth, and influence on the grunge scene. But it just didn't click with me. I'm sorry to say my opinion hasn't changed much. It's fine indie rock but kind of forgettable. I guess maybe you had to be there. But I'd take Sonic Youth over this any day.
Sounds like a rough Smashing Pumpkins. I like it.
a step down from the last album
I’ve tried to get into Dinosaur Jr a few times as they seem like a band I would really like but I’m always a little underwhelmed listening through the whole album. I think I like them better as a singles band (freak scene, feel the pain) that pops up on playlists occasionally.
I actually really liked the vibe of this. I like the layered noisy guitars and I even like his singing. They've got a good sound here and a real identity which I admire. 3.5 rounded down.
I guess Dinosaur Jr are in the same bucket as Sonic Youth for me - hugely influential on the bands that had a major impact on me. So I can listen and enjoy it, but it doesn't quite make a connection.
I like it :) not the best D Jr album but still good
Probably won’t revisit.. but didn’t hate it
Is it Smashing Pumpkins?
This is okay, pleasant even but I'm not convinced it's that special.
Yea, pretty good
Started off good, but the last couple tracks...yikes!
Another rock/indie band I was aware of in the day but never gave the time of day. Was actually very good. 3.5 stars
It was ok, but unremarkable.
This was an interesting album. One of those where it's really ahead of its time.. sounds like it's from much later than 1988. Was clearly very influential on the alt rock sound of the 90s. Some good tracks.
Kind of all over the map on the sound, but was decent
I wanted to like this more than I did.
Average
Intense
3.5
General thoughts: kinda emoish or alt at times, else grunge didnt struck a big impression Favorite songs: Yeah We Know, Let it ride Worst songs: Don't Cover: Rustic cool but not emblematic at all Real rating: 2.95
Liked the guitar tones and noises. Hated the singer. Olivia liked it
another one of my "back in the days" memories, not sure if it belongs on the list. but i enjoyed it nevertheless.
an interest combination of hard rock, shoegaze, punk, and grunge that feels like it might have influenced everyone from Nirvana to They Might Be Giants. Ultimately, it's categorized as alternative rock, but the wide range of influence still shows throughout the album in a subtle yet impactful ways.
Decent rock album, just a bit too noisy for my taste, especially “Don’t.” Hard to hear the lyrics.
This was pretty good. Enjoyed, but doubt I will listen to it again.
I've always appreciated the guitar playing of J Mascis. I think the usage of feedback and distortion in the guitar always been the main draw of Dinosaur Jr (Nothing against his vocals, though I think there's actually a charm to his drawl). It's weird, I normally despise noise rock but I'd put Dinosaur Jr. on the fringe of that label as their noise, while in the forefront, isn't completely overwhelming like other acts. Their sound is more melodic and will feature extended solos from time to time. "Bug" probably isn't their greatest album (Mascis doesn't care for it himself, apparently), but the opening track "Freak Scene" is classic Dinosaur Jr. wrapped into one song. Simple and short lyrically with prominent guitar solo breaks to bridge the verses. The rest of the album stays afloat until around the penultimate song or so, then gets a little too wacky for my tastes. The overall body of work isn't bad, though there might be better album representatives for Dinosaur Jr.
Quite a short one. Many very similar sounding tracks but a few I’d like to hear again. Also a fan of this style. Highlights: Freak Scene Let It Ride Keep the Glove
It’s fine. Some albums are just fine. Not bad but nothing I’m in a rush to hear again. Listenable.
Pretty good.
3.5/5
I wasn't minding it until the last few tracks which probably took a star off for me. The grindy-rock whiny vocal thing worked for a bit.
There are some true high points on Bug (Freak Scene, Budge), yet, in spite of it's quite limited play time, I find myself getting impatient while listening. 3.4
Bridging that gap between sex pistols punk and the American pop punk era of the 90s
Listened Before? N I’m familiar with these guys from their later work in the 90s. This album is similar, but less polished and noisier. I liked it for what it was. Sort of a wall-of-sound approach to alternative music. Good vocals too. Added to Library? N Somgs added to playlist: Freak Scene
It was okay
Decent.
I was *really* digging it until the last 2 tracks, so nearly a 4.
I want to love Dinosaur Jr because I love their general sound, but the songwriting on this album just doesn’t do it for me. They never feel cohesive enough to want to listen repeatedly.
Liked some of this. One song was painful to listen to.
Thanks largely to a friend in college who *really* liked Dinosaur Jr (and Mudhoney and pre-Nevermind Nirvana and others), I've tried many times to get into Dinosaur Jr's garage/wall-of-noise sound, and never really succeeded. Like so many bands of this era, there seems to be more sloppiness than anything else (mixing, singing, instruments), although I'm pretty sure that they played each song more or less the same way each time they performed. I think what bothers me the most (or perhaps is just a sign of my laziness) is that it's nearly impossible to understand the lyrics most of the time, which makes the album a somewhat uninterrupted stream of distortion, barely discernible bass and drums, and muffled singing (I think that's why I enjoyed "Pond Song" a bit more than the others, and *really*, intensely disliked "Don't"). A shame, since this seems to be generally considered their best album (or at least most referenced). But I can definitely see how influential the band was on later alt-rock bands. What always baffles me about my reaction to Dinosaur Jr is that I really enjoy listening to most of what the Meat Puppets have produced, and I'm sure you could make a similar argument about them (except perhaps the wall of noise part). Sorry Dino Jr!
First song's the best, some great guitar and instrumentals throughout but most of the songs aren't that interesting or memorable
Influential and an 80s staple for the alt rock specialists. A little too noise rock for my tastes.
I understand this isn't technically an emo album, but I'd wager dozens of midwest emo bands had 'Bug' on regular rotation. It's earnest garage rock; not too polished or confrontational. I didn't realize Dinosaur Jr. had been around this long. Highlights: Freak Scene, No Bones, They Always Come, Pond Song
I love Dinosaur Jr. and this is a decent album from them but don't listen to Don't. It's a rough song
interesting album. some songs are good, some might be good, but the vocalist never bothered to learn how to sing in key, and this was their third album, jeez. the noise part are lame as well, its just a wall of distorted guitar feedback with wah-wah effect, and its used way too often. but the shoegazy parts shine thru bright, and are interesting. i probably will come back for some songs in the first half, but last half is a complete write off. YMM
Pirteä uusi tuttavuus. Ei parilla kuuntelulla vielä suosikkien joukkoon nouse, mutta energistä ja hyväntuulista menoa.
First time listen
Never heard these before but they're definitely worth another listen. Close to a 4, but not quite there. 3.5
Meh
Another good but not great album.
Actually really enjoyed this and was pushing a 4 - until that last song lmao yeah
A pretty disappointing follow-up to "You're Living All Over Me". Here, the creaminess is gone, as if all the milk curdled up. The result is basically an extra wooshy mid alt-rock.
Bug certainly has its moments, it's got a good sound, that heavy/dirty style, big on the overdrive with enough in the bridge of most songs to keep it interesting, but the vocals are terrible and effectively make every song sound the same. More refinement and skill gets this a higher 3 or maybe 4 territory, but otherwise it's a low 3 because it could've been so much more.
It’s ok
I ended up liking almost every song on this album except for "Don't" which I thought was too hard rock for my usual taste.
I have a friend who, regardless of what song is playing, will say, "This is somebody's favorite song." Well, I'm certain that Bug is somebody's favorite album. It's not my favorite album; but I tried.
Wow! I’ve never heard of this band before but this was so good! Very sonic youth vibes, lead singer was giving a bit of thom yorke pablo honey Standouts: pond song, freak scene and let it ride
Really enjoyed the first and last tracks. Liked most of the others. Hated track 9 so much I almost turned it off.
Liked about half of this — e.g., Freak Scene, Yeah We Know, Keep the Glove. The rest was meh.
Great album. Silver Springs should have made the cut, amazing song.
This has some good songs on it and really great guitar work/solos, but it’s not consistent enough to warrant a 4 from me. The quality definitely took a drop after the first three songs, and I’ve had to skip Don’t every time I’ve listened to it. I do appreciate how 90s it sounds for being an 80s album; I love it when those appear on the list.
This whole album kind of blends together. There’s some crazy guitar which, fittingly, with all of the distortion and layers with the bass, sounds kind of like a bug buzzing. I like Dino jr. but don’t love this album
Worse than "You're Living All Over Me", because this one doesn't quite capture that feeling of sticking my head in a cement mixer. "Freak Scene" is the obvious standout, probably one of the best 80s songs in general. Nothing really comes close to it, but I also wouldn't call any song bad or anything. It's just a pretty solid noise rock album overall. Can't believe some people consider this to be "just noise". Be for real, if Nirvana released this exact same album, you would love every second of it. Strong 3/5.
I love a few Dinosaur Jr songs (none of which are on this album), but I can't help but feel that Bug would have been a lot more palatable if J Mascis could sing. It works on a few songs (again, none of which were on this album) but after a while you get VERY tired of his out-of-tune wail. I think this album would have been a lot higher rated by the community in that case. In the low 3 stars, at least.
Nothing remarkable here
first off i wanted to say i feel bad not listening to frank sinatra yesterday but it was not the vibe. this band however, was described as indie rock with the Pixies as peers. so i will be listening Freak Scene - so far, exactly what i feel i was promised. grungy guitar and male voices harmonizing. one music journalist credited this song as inventing the slacker generation. which is wild. love an influential album No Bones - i like the actual music but the vocals here do feel very men whining to me. there isn’t much actual singing in this song anyway. They Always come - once again, i love the band sound here with the guitars and drums and all. i don’t mind the singing or lyrics either, i’m just not sure what the song means! i tried looking it up but inconclusive. i like it tho Yeah We Know - same thoughts as the last song tbh but the drum is more driving. Let It Ride - i like this one but also don’t have much to say. guitar hits! Pond Song - ditto before stuff lol Budge - okay i actually liked this one much more than a lot of the others idk why, younger me would’ve thumbs upped this on my pandora radio The Post - grungy as all hell. i liked it, kind of sounds like nirvana and smashing pumpkins esque which i love Don’t - so different from any song or sound so far. i don’t listen to this stuff normally but i don’t hate it? just is out of place on this album. the lyrics are literally just “why don’t you like me” over and over again Keep The Glove - actually love. fav one on the album i think, summed it up well i’d give this a 3/5 because it wasn’t quite epic enough to get higher :/ even though i can hear the beginnings of many bands i love in this music, the first one to do it doesn’t mean it’s the best yk. i think this formula was perfected by some later bands
There's no way around it: J Mascis' vocals have always kind of grated on me when I have heard this band. Yet, I enjoy Dinosaur Jr.'s loud and musically pleasant musicianship. The band sounds tight, and J writes some good indie rock. This album reinforces this opinion for me, especially in songs like No Bones and Yeah We Know. The penultimate song on Bug, "Don't," I mostly skipped through because I "don't" need 5:41 of deliberately unmelodic guitar noise and fuzzed out vocals screaming "Whyyyyy don't you LIIIIIIKE MEEEEEE?!?" repeated over and over again. "Don't" is completely unlike the rest of the album and I can't comprehend why this was recorded and added to a full length, let alone 5:41 worth of a "song." Did their producer say "don't record that" and they did it anyway, hence the name? I get why this album is on the list. But I still won't go out of my way to listen to Dinosaur Jr. after reaching the end of Bug. Interesting Factoids from Wikipedia: *Despite it being a favorite of many Dinosaur Jr. fans, (frontman) J Mascis has said it is his least favorite Dinosaur Jr. album. *It was the last Dinosaur Jr. album with original bassist Lou Barlow until Beyond in 2007. Standout Tracks: Freak Scene, No Bones, Yeah We Know, Budge
Solid album that really sounds ahead of its time. I’m sure other people will get more out of it than I did.
It was ok. I always think Dinosaur Jr is a different genre so am taken aback on first listen.
Archaic Rock
Best een nice album. Lekkere progressieve rock Nirvana stijl. Klopt ook wel in de eind jaren 80 begin jaren 90 stijl. Don't is een knaller hahaha
New one to me. Okay album.
Nothing special
