Reviews (page 5 of 7)

This is as far into country as I can go. A few of these songs were nice, pleasant listens. But even then, the imagery of dirt roads, concrete, driving cars made me laugh. They really are staples of the genre, aren't they? Standouts are Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, Lake Charles, I Lost It, and Metal Firecracker.

Sheryl Crow esque

Prima album, niet echt mijn genre, maar vette stem

Country. Right In Time.

Maybe if I’d heard this artist first I may have thought Sheryl Crow was a copycat. Or maybe not. Sheryl has more interesting song subjects in my mind.

Didn't listen

Iconic attitude and style! Really seems like you don’t want to fuck with Lucinda. Also sounds like she would drink you under the table. This album grabs you more as a whole than as individual numbers. A definite vibe. Playlist pick: Lake Charles

Good songwriting and nice melodies too. Not someone who has ever been on my radar but happy to have heard her

Decent album and an enjoyable listen! Not the most fond of country but this was nice - I found the slower, singer/songwriter songs to be my picks from the album.

In what can easily be confused as a Sheryl Crow album, Alt Country Lucinda Williams produces a contemporary of the time piece with the weirdly titled Car Wheels On A Gravel Road. This sound would also contribute to the craze of Modern Country which I'm no fan of, but in a world of gray areas this pop/country album is an easy and forgettable listen some 2 years on.

Not my kind of music. Was tough for me

Ziek lekker wel. Vind vooral Car wheels on a gravel road een goed nummer. Maar op een gegeven moment zakt het in en wordt het saai. Vind country voor een paar nummers wel lekker maar daarna niet echt meer.

Toch een verrassend lekker album. Lekker voor in de ochtend. Bijna echt van genoten. Drie reeten

I'm sure this is very good if you like this kind of thing, but it's a bit too American for me.

Sounds like Sheryl crow

This was alrighr but it got really boring really fast

I thought it was a country banger but its kind of a country snoozer

Decent country style album, lots of repetition in the lyrics

enjoyable

Not a big fan of country or folksy but it may be the recent string of poor albums that made this seem a little better than I'd probably rate it under normal circumstances. That said, it didn't really keep my attention and took a couple days to get through it. Favorite track "Drunken Angel" 2.5/5

Its like a chill Courtney Love. Country love

At times I thought this was pretty unremarkable modern country music, but I think it has just enough about it to stand out from the pack; there’s a rugged, un-cheesy quality which I appreciate. It definitely passes the ‘would I enjoy listening to this on a U.S. road trip?’ test. The rockier tunes provide most of the highlights.

Not bad

Much more alternative country than I was expecting. I enjoyed some songs, others were much too poppy for me

With her gruff but beautiful voice Lucinda takes us on a journey ten years in the making. It took tens years to make this follow up to her self titled album. In this we get to experience what the 1990’s brought to her in a way only she can present it to us.

my kind of country. solid album end to end. 3.5/5

Country-ish, but not too bad

Kind of a cool roots folk country style. I mean she can sing thats for sure. I don't know that I get a lot from it though. Its a nice antidote to stadium country. Greenville is a good song. Joy is a another good song, but I feel like I have heard it before?

Not my typical genre of choice but there were some fun songs on this album. Theres something about a genuine 90s country album that brings a certain sound. Like Right On Time, Car Wheels..., Metal Firecracker - I feel like I can imagine them in the studio recording these ones. Its a cool image.

Eh, it's not bad, but not too sticky for me.

Very evocative and cool. Full of longing. Joy was my favourite - it’s just a bit grittier.

Decent sing-songwriter americana with a bit of a country twang. Nothing really stood out, in a good or bad way. Enjoyable voice to listen to.

only note was joy was not listenable lol otherwise i enjoyed it!

Lucinda has a singular type of voice that takes some getting used to, but I found myself wanting to sing along more than I thought. Her storytelling is perfect for those times when you're driving down a gravel road - the pace is slow but with purpose. She has a way of distilling complex emotions with sincerity and simplicity. Standouts for me were her more angsty songs Can't Let Go and Joy. Some of her songs felt repetitive and she's got better albums, in my opinion, that would be more deserving of being in this list.

Dated folk with less than top quality.

There are a couple tracks I enjoyed. Her voice opens up further into the album. Sweet singing

I’m not the biggest country fan, but Lucinda injects the sensibilities of other genres into the music her, so while it’s definitively country, it can be enjoyed by fans of many other fields.

Americana at it's best, though I didn't know any songs.

Was a decent album. Won’t seek it out.

This was a nice easy listening album. I could potentially find myself listening to it again of my own accord.

A pretty solid country album with some nice tunes. There are a couple of great songs towards the end, with the beautiful Greenville and the furious swagger of Joy, but otherwise nothing too special. Fun fact - the lead guitarist on this album is called Gurf Morlix

If I was more of a fan of this genre, I could see this being a solid album that would have made the rounds for me. Unfortunately, this modern country folky sound isn't really one that I usually gravitate towards. I think there are some tracks on here that I would listen to again (the title track, Joy, and "Can't Let Go" are standouts), so I'll try it again though because I know there is more here. Not a bad record! I think with more listens it could move up for me.

It's a good album. Is it one of the best country albums ever? no. I can appreciate it being on this list but omitting so many other classics - it just doesn't make sense. 5/5: Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, 4/5: Drunken Angel, Concrete and Barbed Wire Rating: 3.5

Definitely grew on me. I’m not super used to country, so I don’t think it hit as hard as it could have. Though the songs are undeniably well-written. Not sure I’m inspired by the production choices.

Something about this album feels nostalgic. Overall pretty good for a country album.

Pleasant, but ultimately I just don’t love alt/modern country

Strong 3.5

Pretty good, for country. Some better songs, some meh songs but overall good.

I was pleasantly surprised by the very strong opening track on this album. 'Can't Let Go' is another impressive song. I could easily imagine Jack White covering it. Those two tracks aside, the album is objectively good but not really that interesting to me. It's a fine example of modern country music but that's not my style.

This was pleasant to listen to but a little more country than suits my tastes.

I enjoyed the album. Probably would not listen again because not really my thing but glad I listened.

Sounded very repetitive.

Never heard her before. Was an enjoyable album. Neat that she is from Lake Charles, and brings some of her roots into the music.

קאנטרי פופ סבבה מרגיש קצת טיילור סוויפטי לא רע

folk , not my stile. correct

Thanks for the Geography lesson Lucinda Fave: Title

Hmmmm, can't help comparing this, unfavorably, to Lisa Germano. It's perfectly serviceable alt-rocky country-splashed singer songwritery stuff, but now I want to listen to Lisa Germano, so I guess Lucinda is losing a star for that, which doesn't seem fair, but there you go. Fave track - the title track, and "Jackson", let's say....

Not really my genre but it seemed really authentic to me. I like her vocal style.

I get Tom Petty, Sheryl Crow, and the...Eels? Way better than anticipated.

This was an alright album some catchy folk pop country. Could tell that there was some old school country in the roots of the songs but with the 90s flair for popularity. Overall it was decent and a bit better than most other albums on this list. 6.1/10

Country alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.

Country. Right In Time.

Overall a decent album, sort of boring songs not much going on -Top tracks: Can’t Let Go

Typical 90s chick with a guitar.

I've spent more time on what I think about this than any other album on the list so far. It's a surface level nostalgia trip through small town North America - probably not anywhere near as phony as Uncle Tupelo, but also way less interesting. The most analogous experience I can think of is reading a book of short stories from an accomplished writer way past the time in their career where they wanted to innovate. It's all fine, hits sentimental notes often enough, doesn't fall into traps of gratuitous style or complete detachment. Somehow it still has writerly tells that make you hyperaware of the craft, in not just the thing but uncomfortably so for the whole format of storytelling. music: hated. (⌐■_■)

I feel like I’ve seen Lucinda Williams live a half dozen times and never listened to a studio album. This is nice.

really enjoyed this, had a country sound that was pleasant.

Good, honest record. Worth repeated listening.

If you are into Country/Americana sounding music, this would be a great album, if you are not, then it's average at best. No surprises I fall into the latter camp. Lucinda Williams is able to encapsulate her life living in the deep south of the USA, when it was still tolerable and the right-wing crazies weren't in the limelight. Best: Can't Let Go Worst: Jackson

I am not usually a fan of country music, but this album from Lucinda Williams was actually pretty good! Favorite song(s): "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road", "Can't Let Go", "Joy", "Jackson"

I was surprised by this. Some really lovely stuff in here!

Enjoyable americana Album

Hard album to rate. Williams' vocals are bland, 90s country pop - BUT the lyrics are outstanding. The overall sound is uninteresting, but then when you take a close listen there are a lot of layers. Taking off some points for the boring part that I had to penetrate to get to the lyrics/nuance. 3/5

Always heard of this as a classic, felt fairly run of the mill to me but I suspect it grows on your

I do not like Lucinda’s vocals. This was almost a 2, but some of the music is pretty good.

it was a good album. nothing i gonna revisit tho i would give it a 2.5. just not my taste

It’s not bad. I mean, it’s pretty mundane and generic, but somehow in a very tolerable way, sometimes verging on pleasant.

It wasn't bad, vocally she reminded me of Sheryl Crow. It was country/folk, nothing really stood out to me that would put it on this list. I didn't mind listening to it, but it would probably be on in the background.

I enjoyed this a lot more than a lot of the other country tinged albums I've had. Nearly a 4*

Sounds like the music you hear on NPR.

Another one that surprised me...."car wheels" drives me nuts but I did enjoy most of the rest of the album...3.5

Country meio sad songs mas ok.

I came in with low expectations of enjoying this but it held more appeal than I assumed it would. 90s female county? Oh yeah Sheryl Crow, that kind of thing… There are some good tunes in here and the cynical curled lip works for me but there’s a repetitive formula to the choruses that’s keeping this down to middle marks.

Un country tranqui. Toca bien la viola y buena voz.

Good album, surprised to see its commercial success

Pretty good, but I'm not really used to country. I like the ballads. Standout Tracks - 2 Kool 2 Be 4 Gotten - Drunken Angel - Lake Charles - I Lost It - Metal Firecracker Listened 6/12/23

Average

HL: title track, "Jackson", "Drunken Angel", "Can't Let Go" 3.5 Album cover is a liminal space if I've ever seen one It's all decently enjoyable to me, but I might have to come back to it another time after reading about Williams' acclaim as a lyricist. I was more focused on her timbre and phrasing (e.g. "Car wheELS on a gravel ROAD") and less on the words, which seems to happen when presented with a unique singer that I'm relatively new to (James Bradfield, Stephen Merritt)

Not a genre I’d usually listen to but it was alright for cooking tea with ! 3*

Quite nice.

90s pop country. Listenable enough. Quite MOR, but interesting personal lyrics. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Right In Time Date listened: 06/05/23

Good news! I've just listened to a country album and it wasn't totally terrible! Bad news, it wasn't that good either. I just don't feel this kind of music - it's nauseating at times, which only makes me feel more antagonising toward the album. I found few songs that were quite good, for example "I lost it", or "Can't let go". Lucinda seems to be very talented and really good at what she does, just it's unlucky that it's so far out of my comfort zone, I can't enjoy it at all. But I tried! Good effort, not my jam.

County / Rock / Folk. Great voice and sound. Though all the songs sounded the same, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing.

I was surprisingly into this.

i didn’t love her voice and that brought some pretty good songs down to okay songs which was unfortunate.

Before today, I'd never heard of Lucinda Williams before. From what I've read, she is a country/folk musician. This album is regarded as her break out record in which she fused elements of rock, blues, country, and Americana. After listening to the album, I would agree with that assessment. Her musical stylings remind me a lot of Sheryl Crow, but her singing ability, or lack thereof, reminds me of Bob Dylan. When the first song came on, I was impressed with the music, then she started singing, and I thought "oh God, what am I in for?" Her delivery is nasally, her accent sounds thick, and she sounds drunk. It is hard to describe, but it is just different, and initially jarring. One of two things happened as the album played through, however. Either she found her voice after the first couple of songs, or I got used to it, because the album itself is great, and I find, is stronger on the second half. Overall, not a bad listen today. Very "middle of the road". Perfectly average. Not a trend setter, but certainly nothing wrong with it. Favourite songs: Lake Charles, Can't Let Go, I Lost It, Metal Firecracker, Car Wheels on a Gravel Road, 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten, Concrete and Barbed Wire Least favourite songs: Joy (could she say the word "Joy" any more than she did in this song? It became very annoying after the first 100 or so), Right in Time 3/5

Country alternativo. Ni fu ni fa.

I wanted to like this album a lot more than I do and that’s upsetting. 2.5 I guess I’m not sure

It was alright, had some good tracks but not my music

Genres: Americana, alternative country Formed: 1979 Run time: 13 songs, 51 min 47 sec Although I’m not a fan of Country, I did enjoy the whole album. My Rating: ***

I so badly wanted to love this but was admittedly kinda bored. Felt repetitive

6/10 nice songwriting and production, but the vocal performance was lackluster

6/10. I don't love her voice, but some of the songwriting is quite good. Don't love it as an album, but definitely a couple good songs.

my least favorite thing about an album lacking in innovation is how little it even attempts to give any semblance of life to that well-beaten path it treads. Lucinda Williams’ Car Wheels on a Gravel Road is standard country fair, with flourishes of roots and americana, and yet all i can hear is monotony. the lyrics are the strong suit here, but they fall flat once backdropped against the formulaic compositions and lackluster instrumentations that don’t care to offer anything else beyond basic structural decency. even the themes Williams tackles — evocative as her writing may be — have all been done well enough before and after, that her album presents nothing dynamic. in the end i guess it clears the bar for what makes a not-bad album, but the only thing truly worse than a bad album is one that’s just mediocre. it’s unmoving, repetitive, and mostly unforgettable stuff.

The album is decent. It gives me a bit more pop vibes than your usual country/folk album, but that might also be its appeal. A few songs do stand out.

If i was in a different state of mind i might love it but for now i was just kinda bored a lot of the time. its not bad tho

Très belle voix. Elle me fait penser à Sheryl Crow, mais je crois que je la préfère. Écoute agréable, mais je pense que je n’en connais pas assez pour distinguer ce qui en fait un album à entendre absolument

i liked it

3 Simple, pleasing folk music

Pretty good, honestly. Chill morning album but not something I would ever listen to in my spare time.

Great songwriting, obviously her unique and unmistakable voice adds significant personality. Was over it by the end of it though - I think a combination of her voice and how straight-ahead country it is.

Although I've never listened to this album before, the songs seem familiar. I thought I was gonna hate it, but it's okay. Has that very 90s indie Americana sound to it that adult contemporary heavy NPR stations everywhere love so much. That middle class rootsiness trying to pretend it's less educated and worldly than it actually is.

A lot of familiarity here, very close to 4 but a few ehhh songs. Pretty nice though.

Little too much country for me. But, ok.

Country. Right In Time.

It’s a nice album with good lyrics but is it that special…nope 3/5.

кантри не моё

Decent folk/country

Was not one that I had heard before, just not in my listening lane.

me gustó pero bueno tranqui 7,5 / 10

It was really nice, but not interesting. A decent record.

Not really my type of country music. Sad and depressing.

When I saw this album was country, I had low expectations, but this actually wasn't bad. A lot of the songs felt very long, despite only being four minutes or so in length, but it wasn't necessarily in a bad way. My favourite song was Joy.

I don't normally listen to country music, but this record actually wasn't too bad. I enjoyed the guitar work and some of the melodies in a couple of the songs. However for the most part, it felt a little flat. The vocals were nice and smooth and deserve a lot of praise, especially in the second half of the record. They lyrics were sweet and full of heartbreak which fits nicely with the Country genre. The drums were easily the lowest point of the record. Very flat and almost boring at points. However, overall it was very enjoyable and there is a lot of good things to praise about this record. Favorite Track: Still I Long For Your Kiss Least Favorite Track: 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten

Pretty good for country.

Didn’t finish this—not bad album just wasn’t into it

A good album, reminds me of Tori Amos (or is it the other way round) a bit, or even a female Steve Forbert maybe? Some good tunes though and lyrically very strong I think. I Loved "Right Time" "Concrete & Barbed Wire" and the Title Track. all good in my eyes and ears!

Countryish

A pretty fun country style record I hadn't heard before. Good fun.

ronpiche et pas dans le bon sens du terme

Listened to this at work and was distracted through some of it. There was a lot I liked and some I didn't. Not a bad record

Normal

Decent enough, but a bit dull.

Find myself enjoying country more and more. This is a decent album which has good subject material, and isn't too whining. Probably not going to be a repeat listen, but would be happy if it came on shuffle on a playlist.

04/23/2022 Alt-blues country... Not really my thing.

That's a whole lotta country. Enjoyed it though, quality songwriting throughout.

Wanted to give it a 2 because I usually don't like country music, but it's good music, feels pretty genuine which I liked

Enjoyable for a change

Love that growling voice. Although got kinda boring after awhile except for the hit that I really like

Some good folk country vibes, I can handle this more than the rock/stadium country. Still felt a bit long and not exactly for me. 3.5 round down.

I really enjoyed this. Americana with a good voice, Sheryl Crowe meets Ryan Adams. High 3.

Liked the vibe

Probably won’t revisit this, but it was easy enough to listen to

neloše za country žanr, al nije baš moj đir iako mi je bilo dobro ko pozadinska glazba dok san čitala

Buen Country

Loved the instrumentals. Soulful voice. The lyrics… need help.

First Listen. Started really enjoying it by the end of the day. It is a good, quality album.

Standard mid 90's Singer/Songwriter fare with a heavy country/blues touch and a slightly annoying singing voice. Nice enough to let it play in the background, but there is not one memorable song or even hook here. 3/5

forgettable, but not bad

She's a superb songwriter, with clever metaphors and impressive storytelling covering themes of lustful longing, childhood trauma, and death of loved ones. She builds the world and emotions of not just the narrator but the characters she fabricates. There's a lot of reoccuring themes, like her love of the Delta Blues (e.g. Howlin Wolf, Johnson, ZZ Top, locations in Louisiana). I also really like the range in her emotions from track to track, some bright, many sad, at various paces that deters repetition. The only part of her songwriting I really dislike is the drawn out phrases that go on forever. Descriptive, but it's like listening to an audio book. It doesn't help that the music itself is really boring. It's a very guitar-heavy album, with like a dozen different people playing, all taking the forefront. Now the sound is repetitive and one-dimensional within each track, which some interesting bridges between verses and choruses, as in "Still I Long For Your Kiss." But when they go for solos, I can't help but not care. It only serves to give a break from Lucinda's singing, which is necessary, but there are so many better ways to do that. The stylistic shifts from song to song is both a blessing and a curse. On one hand, it appeals to several different Americana genres, but also I don't think any of them sound good on their own. The only thing keeping me engaged is the stories, making it a good album if you knew what they were all about and had it grow on you.

Great storytelling makes great country music. Each and every song on this album feels like prose pulled from a hard-worn diary. Lucinda’s syrup drawl and lilting vocals bound between hints of whispers, laments and growls. The arrangements are simple, and well executed, but a touch simple for my taste. I can clearly see the appeal of the album. I didn’t personally connect with it, but I can appreciate it.

Lucinda is like the earlier model of 1993-era Sheryl Crow. Some pretty good songs on this album, but I like Sheryl more🙄

It was alright

Meh. It's not bad, it's just boring. The songs all sound the same.

Liked 2 cool 2 be 4gotten or whatever. I dig her vocals, it's nostalgic, but I've always never heard her. So it hit this really weird niche that I really actually like.

Not bad but not special. Mid afternoon at a festival

My dad bought me this about four years ago as a random selection from the book. It endured a couple of non-committal listens and then was relegated to the shelves, to the point where I was only familiar with the first three or four tracks from it now. It still doesn’t particularly grab me- country rock has never appealed too much and I thought this would be a genre-defining work. Simple arrangements of chords, melody and some arpeggiated lead, very clean production, drawled out vocals occasionally in harmony. It all sets up an opportunity for lyrics to shine or for some flourishes, but there’s just not a lot of bite. The music is safe and never lets rip or feels spontaneous, the lyrics never feel like genuine autobiography, withering takedown or actual heartbreak. Because of all this of course, it’s all very listenable and sometimes foot-tapping, making for good background music. “Right on Time” has a good hook, I enjoy the chorus and mandolin in the title track, and the ballad-heavy second half has its moments in the likes of “Still I Long for Your Kiss”, the most impassioned vocal on offer here. There’s nothing offensive on the record, but nothing much fun either. 5/10, rounding up to 3 in case my dad sees this and gets upset.

Простая приятная американская музыка, но ни одна песня не запомнилась

Bekomme ich schöne Sheryl Crow-Vibes von. Läuft wunderbar durch ohne groß hängen zu bleiben, und dürfte auch jederzeit wieder laufen.

Country e automatiskt 0/10 😉

Enjoyable album, nice singing, guitar and drum sound

This album is a mixed bag for me. I love the lyrics in the verses, somw of the instrumentals and Williams' singing, but the refrains often feel lazy, the instrumentation lackluster, the themes unoriginal. So a 3 from me.

Folk rock blues

Nice sounding album, nothing special

Great songwriting. For some reason I don't see myself returning back to this one. Not dynamic enough for me I guess.

Very solid folk rock.

Actually got quite into this! At first I wasn't sure but particularly liked the last song

Album started strong but got a but boring towards the end.

Meget stille og roligt. Jeg var ikke fan i starten men blev overvundet lidt til sidst. Country-vibes. Måske skal der lyttes lidt mere til teksten?

Just not my vibe.

decent run of the mill country, nothing exciting

Pleasant country.

Kinda a combination of rock and country (I guess its called roots rock?). Not really my cupa tho

I liked Joy and Car Wheels On A Gravel Road best on this one.

Vocals were angst vs twang. This warmed on me and I appreciated it more than I expected. Decent story telling and solid folk instrumental backing.

I went into this with some pre-conceived feelings about the album. I've heard it before and it never really clicked. I can tell she's really a solid songwriter, in that same vein as Townes VanZandt and John Prine and Iris DeMent, but something about the 1990's rock instrumentation just feels a bit lazy and formulaic and I never really clicked with this one as a whole. Still, glad to be giving it a play through as there are some really good songs here. I don't think I'm ever going to love this album, and I don't think it would make the cut on a list of say, 500 albums, but I still think it's worth knowing more about who Lucinda Williams is and some of the great songs she has written, and this is certainly one of her more well know efforts.

Koselig album! Merker at country ikke gir meg så mye. Det kan være stemning for et par sanger, men så blir det litt langtekkelig og repetitivt. Var likevel noen skikkelige bangers på det albumet her! Beste sanger: Can't Let Go, Drunken Angel og Still I Long For Your Kiss.

Country that sits in parallel with Alanis Morissette and pj Harvey. Might give it a further try to see how hooky it gets

It's not bad, but I just don't like Lucinda Williams. I can't even put my finger on it.

Nice enough, very Sheryl Crow. A bit long after a few tracks.

Some good songs but a little too "country-flavored" for my taste. Really like the last song (Jackson).

Blues, country. "Can't Let Go"

I was pleasantly surprised by this album. It goes against my tastes for the most part but I enjoyed a few songs more than I anticipated.

Buena voz. Pausado. Buenos acordes.

Good but not my thing

I enjoyed this more than I thought I would.

It's incredibly bland heartland/roots rock with country influences. Not something I'd come back to.

2.5 fave track 2 Kool 2 be forgotten

Enjoyable folk-country with a sometimes drunk sounding sheryl crow. Drunken Angel is a highlight.

Would probably have never gotten around to listening to this one if it hadn't been for this challenge, but I'm glad I did! Really like her voice.

i see how this could be great for country fans, but for me it was alright. but i still think lucina williams is great

It was nice

I think there is a part in me that likes country style music. To me this is a country style album. I liked it. An unknown artist to me. She only reached the Dutch album Top100 for a few weeks on 6 albums of the 14 she released up to now.

Pretty voice

Solid alt-country album. Similar to Wilco's AM.

alternative country

At first I assumed this was a Country Album based on the everything about it, but I wouldn't classify it with frat-boy-blue-jeans-and-beer country. Williams has a pretty pronounced twang in her voice, but beyond that, her voice is light and airy and pretty beautiful imo. Still not my type of music and not very lyrically complex (compared to say, Dolly Parton) but I like it!

did not listen a lot

Feels a little bad comparing this to the Sheryl Crow album from a few weeks back, but another polished roots-rock record this certainly is. My impressions are mostly the same, though this project has much more potential to grow on me.

Car wheels the song is amazing. The rest is very pop country nothing.

Stripped back, melancholic Americana. Meh... it's OK I guess.

Listening session: june 25th, while chilling at home during the heatwave Listened to before: no Thoughts: quite boring, don’t know why this is on the list Favourite track: Can’t Let Go

I've read the reviews. I'm not going to waste my time. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ❌️ Revisit ❌️ ★★☆☆☆(4/10) default rating Total reviewed : 350 Already owned : 78 Purchased : 16 To buy : 3 Nope : 253

i can see a version of this I like but it has a bit too much country twang and it's a little too simple

Entretenido

Not too bad but still awful country.

This honestly got pretty repetitive quickly. A lot of the tracks were just structured too similarly I guess. Showed some flashes, but ultimately pretty dull for a 90's country record.

the kind of soft country pop that makes me think i’m not american enough to enjoy this. listened to while doing the dishes + reading east of eden, which was not terrible tbh!

The songs themselves sound pretty bland and nothing special. It was Williams’s voice that I didn’t like. I thought it sounded grating at times.

Last weekend I had a chance to see Ben Folds at the local theater here in town and was reminded how much I enjoy story-telling songs. I've been thinking about this for the last couple of days as Nathan and I have visited some of Ben's material from the 90's. And it was with these thoughts that I took on this album. In short, it was hard to get through. The music honestly wasn't bad. But the lyrics? Ugh. Boring, meaningless drivel. I think at one point she said 'he likes to be in Lake Charles because he loves Lake Charles.' Another droned on about concrete and barbed wire without subtle metaphor or meaning - like literally those things. I'm far from well educated musically but at least try to have some nuance. Maybe it was nuanced and I just missed it on a first and only listen. But no way I am going back to give it another chance. I want to rate it a 1 but that is reserved for the truly, all-around awful. This one deserves something for the quality of the music. 2/5.

Prima voor achtergrond maar niet bijzonder.

Ja oke’ish, bietje saai

Had er niet zoveel mee

It pretends it's "not just country" but it's country, like a Seabrook is "more than a crisp"

I just dont care for country

не люблю такое, 2.5 можно отжалеть

First three songs were pretty strong- really enjoyed 2 kool 2 be forgotten. Then it just...trails off, I got bored, and couldn't do it anymore, none of it was particularly bad, just became bland.

She seems like quite a cool lady, but I found her vocals annoying (overly languid and lethargic) and the songs were only okay at best. The title track was probably my favourite. I can't say I know whether she's a significant figure on the country music scene, I hadn't heard of her before.

Not a huge fan. Some recognizable tunes but she stales out so frequently

Some songs I found were okay but most of them I found generic and a little annoying:(

2 Mediokre 2 Ekceed 2-Stars

ok bon de la country

The most inoffensive, non groundbreaking 90s alt country album I’ve ever heard. Nothing on it is bad but what is the point of including this on the list? I gained nothing musically from this and lost 50 minutes to an okay album that I’m sure could be topped by a variety of local bands in my area.

"Lazy" (or "feigned lazy") vocals will always work better with female vocals than with male. Compare them to the singing of average-level British punk output, and this'll win every time. Williams's vocal gives off a thick air of country, and if there was any doubt, the other instruments seal the deal. Definitely a hint of alt-era rock added to the mix, too, with the drumming and guitar. Not a fan of the slide guitar. It's perhaps the most overused instrument of all time relative to how good it sounds. We start off on the right foot with Right In Time, a positive, laid-back yet energetic bopper. The rock-solid title track follows, featuring a You're thinking, "Okay, this is good. As long as the other tracks don't sound exactly like this, as long as there's enough musical variety to convince us Williams is impressive and a boundary-pusher for the year 1998, this album should be pretty great." And then the rest of the album plays. All dreams are dashed. The world turns grey. The 5-minute Lake Charles and mind-numbingly simple/repetitive Greenville represent the very worst of this issue. After a slew of tracks like this, Can't Let Go acts as an abrupt breath of fresh air. Light, breezy, airy energy, making use of a more acoustic sound than previous songs. The use of a fast 12-bar blues progression is (almost) always a win. Great guitar solo. 2 Kool 2 Be 4-Gotten might be the dumbest song title in any entry on this list. At least so far. But it sounds pretty good – those quiet organs add a lot of personality and expression – so it gets a (begrudging) pass. Much later on the album, after the extremely dull track pairing Greenville / Still I Long For Your Kiss, we get the excellent Joy, with guitar-vocal imitation galore, a complex texture, multiple lead guitars going at once, a much rockier and more interesting song... Everything about Joy glows, making it easily the best song on the album. The fact that Williams is capable of this makes some of the earlier stuff a lot more frustrating in retrospect. 2/5 Key tracks: Car Wheels On A Gravel Road, Can't Let Go, Joy

Another of those artists I’ve heard of but mostly never heard before, except one song which used to play often at an old job of mine. I tried to not let my antipathy toward country music influence this listen-thru. But this album lost me very quickly and couldn’t get me back. The title track, the SECOND track, is written so poorly it actually made me angry. Just a lists of a bunch of things that are supposed to evoke nostalgia, sung over repetitive, basic riffs. And to top it all off, the phrase that is the title of the track and album is repeated 18 times! And mostly in pseudo-chorus at the end of each verse. It’s like “if I keep pushing this button the emotions will come out.” There is some good guitar on a lot of these tracks and that zydeco-influenced accordion that was kind of popular in the 90’s. That’s all I can really say it has going for it. The good will I had going into this was thrown out almost immediately. I had no more patience left for simplistic song structure, repetitive lyrics, or twang. BTW, the word you’re looking for is “tires.”

this is boring mediocre country music written for people living somewhere mediocre in america, of which there seem to be rather a lot.

3.5/10 - Pretty boring.

There's something about Lucinda Williams' voice that I don't quite trust. It feels like she's faking it. And these songs aren't that good either.

I’m sure she’s a great songwriter, but I just don’t like music like this

I'm really bad with country I liked 2 cool to be 4 gotten but its 4 AM and she talken about some concrete and barbed wire. This did not change my mind about the genre and idk if i'd keep listening to it

# Album Name: Car Wheels On A Gravel Road # Artist: Lucinda Williams # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Its a big no from me. # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? No

I've successfully resisted this record for some time given how it adopts clarity and transparency as hallmarks of its sound. Every note is clear and well-placed. The pace is measured. It's an articulate album that is oriented towards the listener in ways I'm suspicious of. Generally, I've always felt like I did not have the patience for Lucinda Williams' brand of mid-tempo folk, country, and rock. And while this much polish tends to make my skin crawl, I have a begrudging respect for her craft and will confess to liking this record more on my first complete listen than I expected. There is enough emotional content in her voice to interest me at least once as she journeys on her gravel road.

I'm not normally a country fan, but I kind of liked the mix of folk and country in this album (I read it referred to as alternative country in my research). The musical arrangements are simple and not cluttered, which allows Lucinda's voice to be high in the mix. Her voice is not super fantastic and show-offy, but it does justice to the lyrics. The album is more standard country after the first few songs, my favorite of which was "Car Wheels On A Gravel Road". My other personal highlights included "Right In Time" and "Drunken Angel".

Now I can tell this is an above average country blues album. Not really my thang though, although I don’t hate country (anymore). Drunken Angel was my favorite song, I will say - great, introspective lyrics.

tentei ouvir, chato tipo os youngbloods e o ryan adams lá essa lista enfia álbum pouco reconhecido por ser ruim e antigo pra ter cult status 2/10 pela ordinariedade

Is this what people had to listen to before Taylor Swift?

Een fijn nummer voor de rest was het meh

generic

Not fast enough for line dancing aka the only way I’ll tolerate country music

I just didn't find it that interesting. It didn't stand out that much. "Ranked No. 98 on the 2020 revision of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time". Really?? I don't get it

I am so happy that I was able to listen to this album before I die. I've been searching my entire life for an album that consist of 13 identical songs that have no pulse and the singer just repeats the title of the song ad nauseam. Every song here is like 3:30 to 4:00, but they all feel like 8 to 10 minutes long. I guess I am being a little harsh, Can't Let Go and Joy have a little bit of energy and soul behind them, but besides that this album is an incredibly boring slog to sit through. mid 2.

Not my type of country

It just blends in with the wall

There’s a lot to not like here.

Didn’t do anything for me. A bit too mainstream and bland

Lidt anonymt -- ikke den slags country som *virkelig* virker for mig, men heller ikke den slags der virkelig *ikke* virker for mig

Well that sounded like car wheels on a gravel road...

iets beter dan de gemiddelde country plaat... maar zoals alle country: goed voor één liedje, niet voor een hele plaat... daarvoor zijn alle nummers te inwisselbaar

It’s good but there’s something in the pitch that hurts the ear

So so Americana. Sounds like a drunk Sheryl Crow. Not for me. The cover of Can't Let Go by Robert Plant and Alicia Kraus is good though.

random singer songwriter album. idk. 2.5.

Dollar Tree Sheryl Crow.

its country and western. nice enough

Country ahhh Helt miderino

I'm convinced only people born in the United States can enjoy this kind of music. The rest of us just nod and smile and wait until it's over so we can listen to literally anything else.

I was not familiar with Lucinda Williams and, like other reviewers, I was amazed to learn how critically acclaimed this album was. What on earth was going on in 1998? The music is perfectly pleasant but completely unremarkable.

Not a fan.

nice, not my style

Not very fair for the site to generate this the day after blonde on blonde. Reading that this album took 6 years in the studio is mad but makes sense. The whole thing seems overly polished and a little cold.

like good. its just not my type of folk/singer-songwriter. wasn't too catchy in my eyes and could be more blunt w some songwriting

Did not get why this is here, incredibly generic country, some ok bluegrass twang to a couple of the tracks but overall very bland

bruh tf are they even talkin about

pretty but boring

Fine, just fine.

As a restaurant backgroud music, why not. For my taste, yep no.

Immediately sounded exactly how I thought it would based on the album cover. Generic country. For some reason the vocals change completely in "Concrete And Barbed Wire"? She gains a much stronger accent and starts doing little vocal frills on the high notes. Overall the vocals are decent, Lucinda has a good enough voice, but this music is just so generic. There's some electric guitar, but every song on this album just sounds the same, and sounds like every other modern country song ever. Find the drawl a bit irritating. The lyrics are dull and repetitive. The music is dull and repetitive. Lucinda's voice is fine. I want to go have a nap now, having listened to the same boring country track 13 times.

Nothing special imo. 2.5 stars

Haven't heard of her before. Well it seems for this album she took vibes and ideas from all the popular solo female rock artists of the 90s and turned them into a nothingburger country-ish album. I'd rather be listening to Bitch by Meredith Brooks 2/5

Overall, I found it a bit boring and quite generic and the vocals just weren’t for me (I hated them), the lyrics were okay in the first half of the album but in the latter half (I’m not sure if I was just incredibly bored by then) it was like listening to the most inclusive/non-specific, inauthentic TS album. Maybe it was really revolutionary for its time and I’m missing something but it just wasn’t for me. Also this is silly but I hate the use of numbers in lieu of words so the title of “2 Kool 2 be 4-Gotten” irritates me, I don’t care if it’s irony.

What a snooze fest. This is the type of music that gives me nothing.

I tried, I really did but I’m sorry, I just find country music (especially this type) just very uninteresting and boring.

Instrumentally it’s not the worst but the lyrics and her voice are straight up not it. I didn’t enjoy it on my listen and played snippets of songs for my poor wife and I saw her soul leaving her body.

Unoriginal country. The lyrics are alright.

these are actually great songs but I do not like the mix or her voice so I won’t be listening to them

This is what Nashville chick song writing sounds like. Doesn't make you feel anything.

Bof un peu trop toujours la même chose …

Lucinda Williams has a lovely voice that works well for country music. She has more of an old country style that wasn’t common in 1998. However, I just wasn’t into it. Yes, the album flowed and I enjoy country, especially the old stuff, but I wasn’t feeling it. Not awful, but enough that I don’t know why this is here.
