This ate. I loved the power of her voice and I wasn't bored at any part of the album.

Not my favorite album of theirs but pretty suitable for some Halloween crafting action

Rating this in terms of music-historical significance it's an easy 5 stars. This is the one clear and obvious link from punk and early post-punk to the darker and often synth-driven wing of post-punk and new wave such as The Cure, Echo And The Bunnymen, The Smiths, as well as what later became gothic rock and gothic metal. To a modern listener, the album doesn't sound entirely fleshed out yet. It's sort of unpolished and still very raw (a testament to its punk roots). There's a lot of potential here, but it's not entirely convincing and sounds more like 3.5 stars to me. Definitely rounding up for impact though.

It's not bad, but very one note and falls down at the end.

I have not heard the songs on this album yet. I quite enjoyed it.

Here’s where all the post punk really starts….. I like JuJu better, this is just them all learning to play. Shows some of the coming brilliance and many things that get copied later.

I really like this album. Because there are so many of my favorite bands that were influenced by it and them it holds an even more dear place in my heart. I think the Scream is underrated, even among Souxie fans

Some excellent punk music from a band I've been meaning to check out for the longest time. I don't know much about Siouxsie and the Banshee's later works, but I'd assume they only continue fleshing out the darker post-punk sounds subtly presented on this album. For this debut though, as many future post-punk acts would start, the band sticks to more traditional punk sounds - while still keeping it much slower and more melodic than other bands in the punk genre. Many moments here reminded me of the band 'Wire'. Siouxsie is an incredibly dynamic yet simultaneously consistent vocalist, and lyrically speaking, the unsettling imagery of songs like 'Suburban Relapse', 'Switch', and 'Carcass' further push that gothic post-punk aesthetic. Sonically, the jagged guitar playing and fast-picked basslines you'd expect out of this genre make themselves apparent on most of these songs - which makes for a consistent yet, at times, repetitive 40 minutes. Still songs like 'Mirage' and 'Nicotine Stain' are absolute bangers despite not straying from that very simple formula. The final track switches it up with a shimmering and ominous guitar tone driving the track - it's the most gothic and ahead-of-its-time moment on this entire record. For a debut record, this is honestly quite incredible. Hoping I get more S&B on here, I'd like to check out what their sound evolves to on their more critically acclaimed records. Or, y'know, I can just check them out myself.

This is the first full Siouxsie album I listened to and I enjoyed it.

I was really expecting to hate this at first but I ended up really liking it. This takes so much that I don't like about post-punk and makes it a lot more interesting. The guitar tones here are a genuine highlight from top to bottom. Favorites were Carcass, Helter Skelter, and The Staircase

This very much reminded me of Joy Division. I really liked it, but I can’t say I enjoyed it more than Unknown Pleasures so it gets the same score. Will definitely be returning to this. The cover of Helter Skelter was awesome. Favorite songs were Overground, Carcass, Helter Skelter, and Switch.

so good

it's a halloween listen, and it's august.

I really enjoyed this. A good assortment of tracks with that punk grunge sound I like. I had only heard one song not from this album before this, definitely want to explore more now. Highlights: Overground Helter Skelter Mirage Hong Kong Garden The Staircase (Mystery)

Pretty impressive debut album that was a landmark breakthrough for creating the post punk genre. Wasn't exactly my taste but I can appreciate it for what it was. Standouts are "Hong Kong Garden" and "Helter Skelter".

Not quite as consistent as ‘Juju’ which is the other album featured in the 1001 albums book by Siouxsie and the Banshees, but really, I’m just nitpicking, as this is still pretty incredible for a debut album. I like what I have heard from these guys a lot.

This was surprisingly good. Much preferred it to the othe SATB album on the list

Day207 - i love the new wave punk sound of siouxsie and the banshees, missing persons, berlin. i wish i would have been introduced to more of it growing up.

One of the better Siouxsie albums - not perfect but quite a good post-punk / goth standard. For a genre album it’s tops.

Very influential post-punk album from the 70s which inspired many bands later. It's punchy and tight, the singing is often good, at another times it is a bit much. I preferred JuJu over this album, but I'm giving it a 4 because of its influence it had on so many others.

This one was ok. You can really see the influence that came from this thing. There’s a few good songs, but it didn’t really make me feel anything throughout. It’s good but has its flaws.

This is so ahead of its time. It sounds like Sleater-Kinney or some other 90s indie garage rock, but almlst 15 years earlier. Crazy, and it sounds pretty great for a garage band. Given the limited scope of the instruments, many parts of it sound similar, but it still largely works and I'm really impressed with this sound vs what was popular in the era. Switch eas my favorite, and Jigsaw Feeling did a good job of priming me for the album.

One of the things I always appreciated about this band is that they had their own sound and unusual vibe during a time when most bands were jumping on the punk bandwagon. Their cover of Helter Skelter is one of the better Beatle covers you'll hear.

I've always felt like I should like Siouxsie And The Banshees more than I do, in part from the great band name, and because they have an interesting style, and one that apparently had a deep and widespread impact. But something about them prevents me from getting into their sound; it may just be Siouxsie's voice and style, which doesn't seem to fit as well as it might with the Banshees' sound (but maybe that's the point). I *did* enjoy a number of the songs on this album, though--"Overground", "Helter Skelter", and "Metal Postcard" in particular--and the album as a whole is an interesting experience, especially the interplay of the guitar and drums, especially in the first half of the album. It's also quite a contrast to their later work--I had no idea that they'd made an album like this early in their career. (And what an incredible contrast to something like "Peek-a-Boo" or their cover of "Dear Prudence"....) I'll also admit that I had no idea they'd appeared on the scene in the late 1970s; it's impressive how long they played (although they definitely followed a different direction than this album's byt he time I became aware of them). And I give them 4 stars largely for how seminal this album was for the music scene and music critics. It's worth reading the Wikipedia article on this album just for all the homages from bands after them, like The Cure, Joy Division, Sonic Youth, Jesus and Mary Chain, even Tracey Thorn.

I enjoyed this album, once it got going. Favorite track: "Overground," although I also quite liked "Suburban Relapse."

Post-punk esssential! Musically unique with it’s angular guitars and tom centric drums, nonetheless retaining the simple attitude central to punk. Also love the DEVO style cover of Helter Skelter, where the lyrics are the only part retained from the original.

jigsaw feeling helter skelter mirage suburban relapse switch

Forgot to write. Listened to it twice. A fun album with a lot of yelling. Standouts: Jigsaw Feeling, Overground, Mirage, Switch, Hong Kong Garden, and The Staircase (Mystery).

3.9 decent this

4/5. Loud and excessive, there is a uniqueness to it that doesn't feel old and has aged well. There is clear guitar rhythms in the background but the vocals really shine over everything else with a sense of passion mixed with "F*** it" attitude. The lyrics for some of the songs definitely are lost on me, not sure what they are about but I do see the Talking Heads vibe where they are not really about anything. This is a vibe album, gotta be in the right mood for it but it is epic nonetheless. Best Song: Carcass, Metal Postcard, Switch

Hmm. I didn’t like this quite as much as I thought I would. Frustratingly, there are so many elements I like here, but something about it fell a little flat for me, and I can’t put my finger on what exactly that is… maybe just a case of this being an early example of its sound that was later developed into something more familiar and cohesive. I’m going with a 3.5 rounded up, though I wish it were a more solid 4.

Rating: 8.5/10 Great album overall. The band's spin on punk rock is very unique, this album is so dark in tone while still having the driving tempo and instrumentation of punk. What really separates this from other punk bands is the drumming, it feels very tribal in nature and complements the instrumentation perfectly. The atmosphere that is created on here is special since I hear how influential this was to many other bands, but some of the songs, especially on the second, half feel a bit redundant. Favorite songs: Pure, Jigsaw Feeling, Overground, Carcass, Mirage, Metal Postcard, Switch, Hong Kong Garden, The Staircase. Worst song: Helter Skelter.

This was a decent album especially when it comes to early Post Punk. It was much darker than I expected. I’ve only listened to Siouxsie and the Banchees when they pop up on playlist and compilations, and to be honest I really wasn’t too impressed so that’s why I never checked out any of their albums. But over all it a 3.5 in my book. Better than a 3 but falls short of being a 4.

Right off the bat I’m adding a star to my rating just because it’s awesome. Not completely my style and doesn’t really evolve but I can see it. I’d probably add a song to a playlist but not listening to the album again

It just worked for me! I loved the leads, loved the energy, just thought it was the perfect blend of raw and musical at the same time. Really kept me engaged. Helter Skelter cover was very good, good example of what a cover can do to bring you into a new band's world. Well executed and kind of awesome! I enjoyed running to this. I listen to a podcast where the three Gen X hosts routinely segue from their normal stable of (non-music) topics to obsess about post punk bands from the late 70s and 80s. Siouxsie And The Banshees they have 100% played before in the outtro credits. I think this is the reason I'm so primed to like it, a level of wild and sweaty and Helter Skelter rawness whose entry point for me had to be my older cooler friends liking it first. 4/5

The Scream is proto-post-punk, proto-goth, proto-alternative-dance. The vibe is heavy and Siouxsie's vocal performance is perfect. The only thing I find lacking is strong songs. These aren't the Sex Pistols twisted pop songs. Nor are they The Cure's dark ballads.

Gotta love Siouxsie!

An album that on a personal level evokes so many emotive memories, with Switch, Staircase and Mirage being the standout tracks. Angular rasping guitars and Siouxsie's distinctive delivery not only paved the way for many bands to follow as a gateway to post-punk, but also provided a soundtrack to my formative years musically.

Siouxie is a legend. Great band. Good album.

Glad to get another Siouxsie record, and for it to be another good one. Highlights: Pure, Jigsaw Feeling, Carcass, Nicotine Stain, The Staircase (Mystery)

I didn't enjoy listening to this album that much, there were some really great tracks but then some that I found kinda rough. But I could hear the influences this had on so much of the music I really love, so I had to rate it higher for that

Interesting enough

This is our second record with Siouxsie. I like this one slightly more better.

Favourite tracks: switch; jigsaw feeling; helter skelter

At first I thought it was going to be not that great but fell into the groove. Seems ahead of its time

Will need another listen but overall, pretty good album

41 albums into the project and Siouxsie and the Banshees is the first repeat artist I have received. While this album is not as refined as Juju, the influence that this will have on early 80s post-punk music is undeniable. The guitar and drum combination on this is very raw and unlike anything before it. It works well complementing Siouxsies' rhythmic, screeching vocals. Good listen.

11th album is my favorite thus far. So tempting to give this a five and I think from Carcass on, it is. But a slightly slow start and the fact that I can think of at least a handful of post-punk albums I prefer to this, I've gotta go with a 4.4/5 Loved it though! Favorite tracks : Carcass, Mirage, Hong Kong Garden

Not quite as electrifying as *Juju*, but rock solid

This one rocks hard!! A bit overstated but it’s a good sound

Favorite song Pure, it was all good, still a bit out of my taste preferences

Enjoyed it. Dark, brooding, and punchy. Good post-punk, or something close to it.

Pretenders and Sonic Youth had a baby

Not my favourite Banshees but a good, enjoyable and important one in the history of Punk rock. Is this the first post-punk album? Maybe, though I might argue Chairs Missing has that honour, but I digress. Lots of good tracks on this album. Hong Kong Garden is the classic track but by no means the only worthy track. Jigsaw Feeling, Overground, Mirage, Switch are all worthy and help show off Siouxsie commanding presence. 4 stars

Primal, frantic. The Scream is the forebarer of all good post-punk/indie. Siouxsie Sioux drives the album from start to finish Jigsaw Feeling and Helter Skelter are incredible but nothing stands out, front to back it’s a great album 8.5/10

Never heard of this band… Was gonna say this had a Roxy music influence vibe and I see they met at a roxy music concert lol This is so good I find it hard to believe I haven’t heard of these cats. Either a 4 or a 5 second listen will tell. Amazing either way Literally on the border but we’re gonna say 4 cuz of Hong Kong Garden

That was pretty decent

Top tier post punk!

Her voice makes any song interesting

pretty goth but not as goth as you’d think

Good punkin

This is a cool record. Really an innovative sound to get the whole british alternative punk scene going. Though not so divorced from the British punk sound that you couldn't say have a Clash Banshees bill, which would be sick.

This is good... I can see the punk -> post-punk action happening. I like her vocals, and I like the experimental aspect of it. The drumming really works too. Production is appropriate. Rounding up to a 4 here.

I've always been a little confused by the "post-punk" genre. I mean, how do you define a genre just based on the fact that it came after another genre? But I used the opportunity today to read a bit more about it, and I think I get it a little better now. Still a dumb name for a genre, but I see sort of the type of music that fits into it, and I definitely give credit to Siouxsie and the Banshees for being pioneers in expanding beyond traditional punk boundaries. 4 stars.

тут все-таки важнее контекст, я бы 3.5 поставил, будь такая возможность

less pop and more menace than the last Banshees (Juju), but much of what I'd liked in their performances is also present in this debut. Catchy bass. Theatrical vocals. sp00kiness. HL: "Carcass", "Helter Skelter", "Switch", "Jigsaw Feeling", "Hong Kong Garden" (bonus track technically) November 20th, 2023

I’ve come across some Siouxise sporadically (a “Dear Prudence” here, a “Cities in Dust” there) and even own Hyena on vinyl. But I haven’t dug too deep into their catalogue. “Hong Kong Garden” is the only track on this album that I recognized. I like a lot of music of this style and era like Joy Division, The Cure (Robert Smith actually played guitar with the Banshees for a while), Cocteau Twins and so on. But I found this album a little opaque from time to time. Interestingly, Siouxsie’s recognizable songs often don’t sound too much like the rest of what’s on an album. I suppose that’s not too uncommon - but you get a lot of art rock here when I might have enjoyed some stuff that was a little more accessible. Still, I’m always fascinated by how much rock music changed during the 70s. Abbey Road and Let It Be had been released fewer than 10 years before this album came out. Imagine how people’s minds must have been blown when they heard the opening track on this album. And just as a cultural force, Siouxsie and the Banshees have clearly had a significant impact. Think of that character from G.L.O.W. who dressed like a wolf. All Siouxsie and the Banshees. I’m glad I live in a world where this band has made an impact. For its faults it’s still a fun listen. I’ll give it a 4 but closer to a 3.5.

Fakka med det men hørte ikke så nøye på

Enjoyed most of this, but not as much as Juju, which I got last year. Some great songs, others forgettable. The cover of Helter Skelter is weird, I'm not sure how I feel about it yet.

Grew on me, will probably revisit this one

A real avant-garde record. I still can't believe this was released in 1978. I really appreciate how the album bucks all the norms and takes directions that you don't expect for it to take, especially for the 1970s. Siouxsie's vocals are truly unique. The way her voice almost cracks on the high notes is unlike anything I've heard. Very quirky and weird, but a breath of fresh air after hearing so many boomer blues/rock albums on this list.

first listen i didn't expect to like this but actually the guitar was very nice

Great Halloween album

Waffle between three and four. It's complex and interesting, but it doesn't all sound good to me. I might need to listen to it a few more times to know for sure whether it's just noise or whether it works for me. There's so much going on in the background, I couldn't digest the lyrics without intentionally digging into them. So far, I like the idea of Siouxsie and the Banshees more than the execution, but we're giving an extra star for their cultural impact.

This album rules. I can hear this band’s influence all over the place. It has a cool feel throughout. I will definitely continue to explore this band’s music.

I can see this as the foundation of a genre, but I don't love it. Extra points for female lead in rock and for the history

Amazing debut album.

One of those artists that I've always heard the name, but never took the time to listen to. Really liked this. 3.75/5

This grew on me a lot as it went on. Thought the first few tracks sounded great until the vocals - couldnt get away with them at first but as the album went on I got right on board. I quite like this brand of punk - less stereotypical and more interesting. Already added a few tracks to a playlist (Metal Postcard being the best) and will return.

This was brilliant, I didn't mind the last Siouxsie album we had but this was so much better. Must be hugely influential on a particular sort of rough 00s indie, reminds me loads of be your own pet in particular. I struggle with the singing style a bit, I think it would have been a 5 otherwise but I can't say it's a complete winner because of it.

This is a really solid debut album. Siouxsie and The Banshees have always been a weird blind spot for me, I've always heard they were good but had just never really listened to them. They have a great sound and were really on the forefront of post rock. I was thinking how much they remind me of Joy Division before realizing this album came out a year before Unknown Pleasures. The only thing I'd say is that this album starts to feel a bit repetitive towards the end due to the production but this was my first couple of times listening to it, so that could change as I become more familiar with the specific songs. Standout Tracks: Jigsaw Feeling, Carcass, Helter Skelter, Metal Postcard (Mittageisen), Switch, Hong Kong Garden

Pretty good, but a bit too much dissonance and sharp edges for me. In my memory I preferred Hyena, but haven't listened to that in a long while.

I liked this, but I'm not sure I'll ever choose to listen to it again. I'm not sure why.

The use of strings is brilliant, approaching diagetic as nearly as one can in lyric music. Maintaining persistent doubts about the, let's say, range of such music, I thrill at the anger of washing dishes, persistent monotone basslines. If Siouxsie's band teeters somewhere, it has teetered there for 45 years. Coin it: post-punk stable.

It's good

Enjoyed this a lot. Sometimes Siouxsie can be just background wallpaper and it's just perfect.

This was their debut album? Amazing! The highlight for me is "Metal Postcard (Mittageisen)", but I also liked "Jigsaw Feeling" and their cover of the Lennon-McCartney song"Helter Skelter".

I enjoyed this from start to finish. I was actually a little surprised that I hadn't heard a single track from this album before (I'm not counting Helter Skelter for obvious reasons, and Hong Kong Garden wasn't originally on the album, although I do love it for both the music and the imagery of a busy Chinese takeaway). It definitely deserves another listen, but it's not quite a 5-star album. There's a couple of tracks that felt like filler, like the song about smoking which made me feel a little ill. But even then there was something interesting to keep my attention.

Better than I expected. I gave that one quite a few rotations.

You can hear a lot of the influence this album has had. I've had this one after the later album on this list, and it definitely feels more focused and driven.

Great but not their definitve album.

Not bad. 4

Well, one of the things that I've learned through participating in this list is that I'm a fan of Siouxsie and the Banshees. The only thing that this album has working against it for me is that I heard it after I heard Juju, which is one of my favorite albums that I've encountered in the last year. This album isn't nearly as interesting nor as polished as Juju, but it's still groundbreaking on its own merit. I find it astonishing that by 1978, only one year after punk broke out and most of the classic early albums were released, there were already acts like Siouxsie and the Banshees that had already moved beyond the tropes of the punk genre to develop their own style in its wake. There's so much in this album. The bass-driven songs, the Siouxsie's soaring, dark vocals, the guitar effects, the soaring drums focusing mostly on the toms. It's clear that a lot of other people were listening to this album shortly after it came out, because a few years later it's influence was everywhere and is still felt today 4/5

This was awesome, love some good female angst

Liked.

This isn’t amazing.But I like the vibe.It’s really lo fi and dark and depressing.I don’t know whether I should give it a 3 or a 4.

- First listen to a Siouxsie album - Thought I would like it and it lived up to expectations - Helter Skelter cover is very good - Fav songs: Jigsaw Feeling, Mirage, Helter Skelter

Difficult to evaluate in the proper context, as it sounds *so much* like the music it inspired afterwards. Unique (at the time) production and guitar work (the first of their two outstanding guitarists), basically invented goth and post-punk. A generous 4 for its huge influence

How to score this? Rock music shorn of any real human emotion; absolutely nothing in terms of groove either, it lurches around like some sick merry-go-round music. Yet - Siouxsie is an arresting presence, I love the fragments of sound thrown out by the guitarist (and the percussion that serves to accent this weird approach to rock); plus in 'Helter Skelter', 'Switch' and 'Metal Postcard' you have a clutch of truly powerful, astonishing songs. I'll give it four stars, but I'll walk away a little bamboozled all the same.

Didn't like this one as much as the other Sioux we listened to, but still enjoyed the experience overall. Dare I say I actually liked the "Helter Skelter" cover? I do dare. I do. Thought it finished strong, too. "Hong Kong Garden" and "The Staircase" were both two of my faves here. I'll welcome more appearances on this list.

4.0 - Commanding as a debut with all their signature elements on display. Jagged, jangly guitars and Siouxsie Sioux’s intense, bellowing vocals. A consistently exciting listen within a lean 45 minute package though their explosive potential sounds more realized on “Juju.”

Favorite tracks: Carcass; Mirage 4/5.

I didn't like this as much as Juju, but damn did I not feel cool as fuck while listening to it! And that Beatles cover was so out there it threw me for a loop.

Listening to this album is like finding the missing link. So many bands I love are heavily influenced by Siouxsie and the Banshees, and although they aren’t an immediate favorite they certainly have a sound I love and I imagine further listening to later albums is warranted.

Solid. Hadn't ever listened to early Banshees. 3.5/5

Not as good as Juju but still a very good record.

Goed rock-album

Strong album right up my alley

Although I feel Siouxsie and the Banshees would find their footing better on later albums (particularly Juju and Kaleidoscope), this is a really strong debut, one that apparently helped launched a whole genre and probably a hundred other bands. Equal parts alluring and unsettling. Powerful angular guitar and rhythm-forward sound. Striking, commanding vocals from Siouxsie Sioux. Fave Songs: Overground, Switch, Nicotine Stain, Suburban Relapse, Jigsaw Feeling

Just another piece of proof that girls can rock out rough and rowdy just like anyone else.

Great punk album, with a very good singer. She s coming to Brussels soon but unfortunately it s already sold out. Nice discovery. I already knew some songs of them, but nothing of this album. You can here a lot of other bands who got inspiration from this band. Like the young fly s guitar play of U2, like on songs as i will follow. Great mix of punk and new wave. Also the yeah yeah yeah s are not far away from this album.

Straight forward rock tunes that are elevated by some serious attitude and incredible voice.

The dark side of Siouxsie. I absolutely love Hong Kong Garden and their cover cover of Helter Skelter, but it's a bit too brooding for me. I am happy to see post punk/new wave on this list...we need more of it. 3.5 stars

I love Siouxsie and the Banshees, so this was great to see on the list. Not their greatest stuff, but even in this first album of theirs, there's hints of the greatness they'll later achieve.

Landmark punk recording. Changed the game for women in rock music. That droning guitar and bass, those Jefferson airplane-turned-punk vocals. The driving drums. Very important album to listen too. Bands like Joy Division and Sonic Youth obviously took much inspiration from this. And that version of Helter Skelter is just sick.

Pretty good. At first this didn't stand out to me all that much as it kinda seemed similar to a few post-punk albums I've heard in the list. I originally sort of dismissed this as another post-punk album from the late 80s or early 90s, but then looked again and noticed this was an album from 1978, and that makes it really impressive to see what they were doing, and the influence this must have had on later bands. While I'm not sure if this is something I'll listen to again and again, as post punk has never really been my sort of thing, I greatly appreciate this. Favourite: Metal Postcard (Mittageisen)

Denna plattan gillar jag, kanske mest av nostalgiska skäl. Hong Kong Garden är en stark favorit. Nicotine Stan kanske bästa låten! Bra poplåtar.

Ferocious and woozy.

I'm generally here for Siouxie and her Banshees but this album is admittedly a bit of a mess. Despite that, it's a lot of fun. It's just so raw and wild. Compelling. I'm not going to make excuses for the riot grrl. She doesn't need it. She can stand on her own. For my part, I'm just going to bask in the post-punk madness.

Really grew on me! Hong King Garden is *chefs kiss*

"Overground", "Metal Postcard", and "Suburban Relapse" were the standouts on this very good album. Very cutting edge music from a band that doesn't get the credit that it deserves for all the 80's new wave/punk bands that it influenced. This sounds like a perfect mix of The Smiths and X.

A very good debut album. While not Siouxsie’s best, it still belongs in the top tier of the Post-punk canon.

Great bit of punk. slow start and short album and definitely has an unfinished feel about it but that's all part of the charm. 3.7

I first heard of Siouxsie and the Banshees back when Gerard Way would cite them as one of the many influences to My Chemical Romance. Makes total sense now that I listen to them. This is dark, apocalyptic, and pretty demented. I don't have much of the vocabulary to describe an album like this, so I'll leave it on the opinion that this sounds good and I liked it quite a bit. Undoubtedly influential to a whole bunch of other artists, too. Favorites are Overground, Carcass, Mirage and The Staircase. It could be a five star record, but (to me, at least) that cover of Helter Skelter is unfortunately bad.

Nice, original, pretty well written. Dig it.

surprised i hadn’t listened to this. pretty pretty cool

Melhor pos-punk e gótico dos 80. Preciso escutar mais.

Has its own sound regardless, then we remember this work was completed in 1978. This group was pioneering and it shows. Really cool, out there yet not so out there it had no melodic or harmonic sense. Tough to hit that balance and they did. Very nicely done.

i loved this. loved her voice. loved the sounds.

A beautiful and gothic debut from Siouxsie and the Banshees. While they would surpass this album with bigger, more iconic music this is still fresh as hell.

A band that has always somehow been in orbit around me, plenty of people love them, but I have never sat down and given a listen. Pretty fun album, and I dig the vibe a lot. Will explore more of their records.

Quite good

More familiar with her later material but I really enjoy this rawer/punkier debut. I'm a closet goth.

I'm starting to think I like Siouxsie and the Banshees. I was originally listening on laptop speakers and halfway through Jigsaw Feeling I wanted to go listen to this on headphones. Some very Can-like guitar playing here, reminds me of their track "Father Cannot Yell". I definitely appreciate the dark post-punk here. Fun to know that they originally didn't know how to play anything really on their first gig, that's as punk as it can get. That Helter Skelter cover surprised me as well. Overall it falls a bit down as it goes along for me, but overall still good stuff. Metal Postcard did kind of annoy me though.

Pretty good somewhat haunting

Rating: 7/10 Best songs: Helter skelter,

I really enjoyed listening to this album. I had heard individual songs but never the entire album in a listen-through.

Genre: Post-Punk 4/5 Siouxsie and the Banshees, one of the first groups regarded as truly post-punk, released their debut album in late 1978. The turn of the decade was nigh, and groups such as these brits right here were beginning to push the limits of rock into the 80s. This album, The Scream, was one of my favorite listens throughout this exercise. Incredibly forward thinking, heavy as hell, and clearly a major influence on the genre, this album is an album not just full of killer jams, but one that’s a big moment for rock and post-punk. Once Jigsaw Feeling started, I knew I was in for a good time. The album continued to pump out jam after jam, with Carcass shortly following it, their take on Helter Skelter (which is quite good), and with songs like Metal Postcard and Suburban Relapse filling out the back end of the album. All of these tracks do a great job of executing their own unique style, and after the album finished, I genuinely just wanted to start it over and listen again. The vocals were wild and great, the guitars are top-notch sludge, and the rhythm section in this swings between tribal and punk styles like it’s no problem. Really great stuff here, very pleasantly surprised!

Pièces préférées: The Staircase (Mystery), Switch, Metal Postcard (Mittageisen), Nicotine Stain

Essential album for goth, post-punk, new wave. Great sound. Some mysterious bass, guitars flowing with anxiety and stress. Siouxsie's moans and shouts are just immaculate. Fav track: Switch.

Alright

1978? You can hear this album's influence in late 80s synth pop, 90s college rock, on and on. This was a pleasure to listen to and this album in particular is an example of the post-punk sound's influence. Bonus: what a great version of Helter Skelter.

Encore une belle découverte, album plein de promesses pour l’avenir.

Ding ding ding ding-ding-ding-ding-ding oooooh oh oh oh oh

Really enjoyable post-punk record. Wasn't familiar with this group but it feels right at home with other artists/bands that I love from the same genre and period. Some great noise-rock guitar sounds. Will try to revisit this one again soon.

I understand Juju, but I'm a bit shocked this was picked over Kaleidoscope, A Kiss in the Dreamhouse, or Tinderbox on the list. Am I complaining? No. I love post-punk and I love Siouxsie's vocals. What I love best about her vocals is best represented in "Metal Postcard," abrasive but fun and a little weird, reminds me of Cindy Wilson of the B-52s. There are some haunting gothic hints of where their sound will take, as in "Overground" and "Suburban Relapse." It seems like a lot of viewers give their points to the album's influence over how much they like it. I'm the opposite: their influence didn't explode until two albums later, but I find this to be a guilty pleasure of mine. I really enjoy all the songs; there's always something exciting happening that I wouldn't believe anyone who said they all sound the same. Before today, I only knew "Hong Kong Garden," and now I appreciate the song so much more now that I have context of how different this album is from their other work, and I like that. Again another example that reinforces post-punk as my favorite genre.

What an interesting listen. If I hadn't looked at the band title, I might have thought it was a Patti Smith album. The wiki article talks about how the vocals in this album are an instrument and I can definitely see that. It's hard to believe that it was recorded in 1978. I love this tidbit from wikipedia that shows that fandom sometimes does work. "A fan undertook a graffiti campaign in London, spraying the walls of the major record companies with the words "Sign the Banshees: do it now"." Also, this was interesting to learn about the title,"The title of the album was in part inspired by the 1968 film The Swimmer (starring Burt Lancaster), in which main character, Neddy Merrill, intended to swim home, using open-air pools. Climbing over garden fences, from pool to pool, his journey put him into a state of mental and physical exhaustion, and in the end, Goddard said, "all Neddy Merrill could think to do was scream, [...] as a scream of exhausted jubilance after a troubled, arduous journey". All around, a good album. Made me want check out their last album of 2004 to see where the band went.

Absolutely classic debut album from the Banshees. What punk was all about.

Hell yes. Great 70's female punk album. Great cover of Helter Skelter. 4.5

I like this style of music

really fun, women are so punk!!!!!

4/5 only because I know with time I will like it more and more. Some really good dark rock on here. Standout: Helter Skelter.

Really surprised I haven't heard more of this band.

Energetic, lively, fully committed to what they were doing. A really fun listen.

Raw and edgy goth post-punk. I much prefer her voice on later albums - she does a monotone drone a bit much but it's still really cool and interesting.

3.5 because of the last song

Solid punk rock sound

I quite liked most of Side 1 of this album.  Jigsaw Feeling is excellent. Overground - not so much. My favourite might be Carcass - a song that it seems most people passed over. The thundering  in your face bass lines do the trick for me.  I have a habit of commenting on cover versions so I must say that The Banshees' cover of Helter Skelter is excellent. Side 2 doesn't start strong but again I liked the less popular songs Metal Postcard and Nicotine Stains. The driving bass lines in Nicotine Stains make the song. On the home stretch, Suburban Relapse and the first half of Switch were a little hard to listen to.  Listening to this was a little bizarre since, before playing it,  I thought we were easily heading to 4 or 5 territory since  I remember liking this band. At the end of the day, I'm rounding up which is deserved imo since they influenced  many bands I like,  in particular bands fronted by females.

Some crackers on this album, proper goth / punk banger.

Good album, I like it a lot. definitely sounds ahead of it’s time. It does get a little samey tho. 8.

I'd like to listen to this again to differentiate the songs? Bit samey but good

Really enjoyed it. can see how the sound lives on today, "carcass" in particular sounds like a female-fronted Hives

I like the vibes. Like X, but Brits!

Awesome. A little underrated in her catalogue. 8/10

Meh de helter skelteer

Goede en toegankelijke "punk"

Riktigt bra

A pleasant surprise

Cool Helter Skelter cover. Best songs: Switch, Hong Kong Garden and Nictone Stain.

And a half

Some sound, HK gardens stand out

Great, late 70’s punk

decent album, no specific songs really grabbed me, but I liked the overall sound and vibe

Helter Skelter cover was cool

Before today, the entirety of my Siouxsie listening consists of whatever I saw on MTV (a song on 120 Minutes here and there,) and hundreds of listens to "Peekaboo," which one of my high school friends was obsessed with. I knew some of her background story thanks to my own obsession with the history of the Sex Pistols. This is much more sparse and rudimentary than her later stuff that I've heard. Interesting take on "Helter Skelter." I probably would have been a big fan of this in high school when I was desperate for anything that could be described as "punk." I still really like "Switch." I like these guitars and I can hear how influential this was in a lot of what came after. I also liked the two singles tacked onto the end of the version I listened to.

Straight up the middle for me. I wouldn't be put off by this being played, but it's not necessarily something I'll reach for.

Didn’t mind it

3.5 stars

Okay, it’s not my favourite album ever but it’s so influential that it deserves more credit.

Overall pleasant I guess? The songs sounded kind of samey the whole way through so very little sticks out as memorable (except that awful Beatles cover), but I did save songs such as Carcass and Nicotine Stain for later listening. It's great at what it's trying to do, I just don't care for what it is trying.

Not really my thing. Sounds a lot like other punk albums from this era, so it doesn’t stand out too much. Still, intro is cool, and there’s a couple interesting tracks. Rating: 5/10 Favorite Song: Switch

I like Siouxsie and the Banshees in general but didn’t fall in love with this one

I know of this band. Haven't listened to much of their stuff. it is very cool, punk. Cool stuff.

never been a big Siouxsie fan but this is actually not bad

Kinda fun femme punk rock / rock vibes. I like the name a lot, but the album was alright imo

i wanted to like this more but it was still good!!

As alternative as this is, I was able to listen to it easier than some other albums in other genres, but that’s probably because I can hear the early punk in it.

Pure - 3 Jigsaw feeling - 4 Overground - 3 Carcass - 4 Helter skelter - 3 Mirage - 4 Metal postcard (mittageissen) - 3 Nicotine stain - 3 Suburban relapse - 3 Switch - 3

A solid introduction to riotgrl

Screamy - So, pretty much as expected.

Vocals drone too much for my liking.

Influential record. But not something I’ll listen on the regular.

this was fine but also annoying but also not the worst i honestly don’t know how to feel about this. did not turn me into a repeat customer that’s for sure. siouxsie is lowkey obnoxious in my ears … this is a really weak 3 but would feel sus to give it a 2.

This one didn't really stand out.

It's ok. Beatles helter skelter goes way harder tho; at least try

Repetitive but fine

Middling

I relate, i t reminds me a lots of teh B52's with the similar guitar sounds and female singers voice. Yet, i listened only once and had enough.

Well, there’s influential, and there’s influential that I actually enjoy listening to. This one is much more the former and much less the latter. I waffled most of the way through it between three and four stars, the higher rating for its influence, the lower rating for its listenability, or lack thereof. 3.49, rounding down.

Didn't age very well.

3.4 Felt a little Joan Jett-y at times (not that that's a bad thing)

I like their sound but they lack standouts here. 6/10

This is one of those bands that I’ve always enjoyed what I’ve heard from them, but never listened to whole albums from before. I did enjoy the atmospheric sound. I enjoy this era of Oort punk quite a bit. Not the best stuff from them I’ve heard, but still enjoyed it. 3.5/5

This one may have been extremely influential in its time, but this many years on it sounds mostly pretty pedestrian on the first listen. I can appreciate the bass driven compositions, and the exploratory musical structures within the genre, staying mostly within the bounds of the the genre, it's just not something I'm going to throw in for a listen-through more than for this experiment. It does get a little more listenable with a couple run throughs.

was wel leuk

leuk maar haar stem was minder goed

Very punky album, and punk isn't my favourite so... Didn't find the songs that memorable, but it's probably mainly due to aforementioned issue. 'Hong Kong Garden' and 'Helter Skelter' were pretty cool songs though. Also found the overall production to be quite weak. Most songs sounded rough and closer to demo. Weak 3.

Quiet decent punk album, enjoyed the general sound of it all. I was not the biggest fan of the “Helter Skelter” cover but songs like “Overground” made up for it. Made me think of another favourite from this list - "X-ray Spex" but not quite as good. Lower side of 3.

No idea what this is. Great. Thats what this book is for. Aparently its an extremely influencial band. The singing is prety weird. The song are mostly generic punk music. A Beatles cover ?? Its not my style of music. I think punk is really boring and one note. Most of the time, just dumb. This band is no exception but I think they are more fun than other punk band. Yeah I dont see why they are influencial. Not by hearing this album atleast. Maybe its not their best idk this book does that all the time. Punk/5

stressin me out ngl

It's a powerful rock, sounds like a garage rock.

I heard it before. Glad I did. I love these old punk sounds.

A solid, if a bit raw, debut from a band that would go on to become one of the most influential alternative/goth bands in the 80s. Siouxie's vocals, and the band's songwriting would both only get stronger. Not their finest album, but a worthy start.

Yet another band I need to explore more of, it was a solid debut.

post punk icon

It’s alright. Nothing bad, but also not the most interesting or captivating album either. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again

Hong Kong Garden

Helter Skelter is good then idk it all blended together

A good album, I liked Jigsaw Feeling, Switch and Hong Kong Garden the most.

Monotonous

I got this band aways back, and gave it 2 stars. Revisiting them now, I understand why I gave that rating, but I also berate myself for being so uncultured because this is far from bad. It's a little too punk for my own personal tastes, but I enjoyed my stay.

I liked this a little better than I thought I would. "Carcass," the only song on the record on which Siouxsie has a music writing credit, is a standout. Steve Lillywhite's production gives Boy vibes, especially some of the drum sounds!

me encantó lo instrumental bastante disrruptivo para su época pero la voz dejó que desear

This was probably better in the momemt, but it's just a Meh today.

je m'attendais à qqchose de plus whimsical mais pas grave

Siouxsie and the Banshees are very lucky here with their choice of cover song. If I had to say that the best song on this album was written by Yoko Ono, KSI or The Shaggs, that would come across as a massive insult, but because it's Paul McCartney... I mean, yeah obviously - he's one of the greatest songwriters to have ever lived, right? You could put a Helter Skelter cover on most albums and it'd be the best song on the album. In reality it's not just the best because it's good, it's also the best because the rest of the album is pretty awful. This is my second foray into Siouxsie and the Banshees after Juju. I didn't think much of Juju, and I think The Scream isn't better. I don't understand the hype. Now, that's not to say it was bad per-se... it was fine, but I don't really see what all the fuss is about. The fact that Helter Skelter is on here is worth marking it up, but that will be cancelled out by the fact that there are thousands of covers of Helter Skelter that are better than this one.

Decent listen

Ehh... Not great. Kind of Cure-meets-Joan-Jett maybe? Not terrible.

Improvement on other British post punk we have had

Better than I remember this band but nothing special

This is great, towards the top of the 3s

I think this is cool it is a cohesive album and I love when women are rockstars but I just don’t think it’s my thing

Awesome! Girl power

Flott inspirasjonskilde, men slitsom å høre på vokalen i lengden.

siouxsie's vocals are gorgeous and i hate to say this but everything else was just kind of boring

non finito, overground forse è stata la mia preferita

Decently catchy. Can see the early trends on display here.

An Interesting rock album with singing that reminds me of Rush. I really like a big part of the album and most of the songs. Somehow I just cant see myself choosing to listening to it again. I don't know why exactly though. Maybe I'm just not in a headspace where it fits right now, on the other hand I don't know when I would be or what that headspace looks like.

Review - further evidence that I prefer the idea of Siouxsie and the Banshees to the actual Siouxsie and the Banshees. It's not a bad album and it's nice that they were trying something that was very different in its era and is still different than other rock bands today. But it's just not that enjoyable to listen to. Some good tracks here and there and the guitar parts are always interesting but not in a rush to listen again Rating - 6.5/10 Need to hear? YES

If 3 stars exemplified anything, it would certainly be this album right here. Add this to the ever growing list of albums that I enjoyed more than I didn't, but really can't say much for or against because of how by the books and generic it all was. Maybe not when it came out, but by today's standards, this album really did not do anything new or interesting for me. Again, I enjoyed every song just fine. I liked how it mixed both Post Punk and Rock elements together, and I like the lead singer's voice. But, every song sounded the exact same, and Siouxsie Sioux has such a familiar voice, even though I've never heard of her in my life until listening to this album, so it's not going to be very memorable in a day or 2, and I'll likely mistake this band for the million others on this list that sound just like it. Post Punk isn't necessarily the deepest genre of music, and a lot of it sounds pretty similar, especially around the 70's and 80's when it was actually relevant. All that being said, I easily managed to listen to it all day, so it's going to get a 3.5 stars. My favorite song was, funnily enough, the cover, "Helter Skelter", because I liked how fun and goofy it was. Pretty lively, and they did a good job singing it. It's the only song on the 12 song album I've put to memory. Damn, I can't tell any of them apart by looking at the song names. That's pretty telling. I'm already running out of anything good or bad to say about this album. It's just one of those, you know? I enjoyed listening to it, spent the entire day vibing with the cool vocals, and then absolutely blanked when it came to being creative with the review. Oh well, at least it was good. Bit of a shorter review today. The creative juices aren't flowing with this one. Next album please.

Some great songs but the overall album doesn’t connect

Day 210 An album I thought got better as it went on to the point that the final 3 songs were the best. That Helter Skelter cover is fucking woeful though. Highlights Switch Hong Kong Garden The Staircase

I can't seem to get into any of these punk albums.

Like it 3/5

Can't believe this album is from 1978. I've read some pretty big names that were influenced by these guys and and really just just stating diving into some of the music over the last few years at the recommendation from Jun. Recognize Hong Kong Garden but the rest of the album is relatively new to my ears. Like the overall sound of the band and the singing of Siouxsie. Have to say, I enjoyed the first album off this list more, but overall, an enjoyable listen, 3

3.5 Our second outing with Ms. Sioux, and I gotta say, I enjoyed it about as much as the last. Compared to Juju, this album has “debut” energy written all over it with its more simplistic songwriting and production, but in many ways, therein lies the charm, as I really think it embodies the untampered spirit of the group - it also commands more attention to Siouxsie’s vocals, which is always is a plus. The punk influence is much more noticeable as well, though the gothic traces of what’s to come are just as present. While I oftentimes find the term “post-punk” vague and misleading (you’re telling me a song like Pictures of You is the musical evolution of say, Now I Wanna Sniff Some Glue?), I don’t think it’s ever felt so apt as it does here - this truly does feel like the perfect midpoint between first and new wave, having as much Ramones to it as it does The Cure, and yet, it still manages to feel entirely like its own all the same. That all to say, this album is strong in terms of overall sound and vibes, but unfortunately, it doesn’t lend itself to a ton of memorable moments. I know that’s not necessarily the point, nor should it be the most important metric an album is graded on, but I think I would have enjoyed this a bit more (or would at least find it more replayable) if it didn’t mostly run together. Don’t get me wrong, I think the aforementioned production does this a lot of favors, but it’s also hard not to feel like there’s a certain one-note quality about it. While I can confidently say that I liked every song that I heard, Jigsaw Feeling and Helter Skelter (an improvement upon The Beatles’ if you ask me) are probably the only two I really remember four listens later. Oh, and Hong Kong Garden of course, but unfortunately, it’s a non-album single that was later bundled as a bonus track on certain reissues, so I can’t really factor it in here - which is a shame, because I think its inclusion may very well have kicked this up to a 4. I’ll never be unhappy to listen to more Siouxsie Sioux, but this isn’t quite Juju-level for me. Oh, and since I mentioned them earlier in my review, I have to give a shoutout to The Ramones’ debut turning 50. If it weren’t for that band, who knows if I’d still be doing this 1001 albums challenge now. Hell, who knows if Siouxsie and the Banshees even still exist. To all my fellow punks out here, keep fighting the good fight. Hey ho, let’s go.

Love this band and had no idea they did a cover of Helter Skelter so there’s that.

I like the distinctness of S&tB's sound, its influential but still unique. Problem is I don't really like many of the songs. Fave Tracks: Switch 2.7/5

This album is totally fine today and easy to see why it was big when it came out. They were never my favorite, but they were adjacent to and/or influenced a lot of bands I do love, so I appreciate them for that. In 2026 and without any personal/emotional connection to this album, it sounds pretty muddy and uneventful.

Very cool

#866. I know this is one of those "your favorite artist's favorite artist" kind of things, but it didn't seem particularly special or interesting to me. 3/5: acceptable

I wanted to like this, given how much I've heard about this group. But I had a hard time with the vocals - they just grated on me. I can hear the influence they've had on other groups. It was just okay for me.

She has a very interesting voice. Metal Postcard was fun.

Was ok honestly, nothing memorable. Didn’t hate it though

As above

Although Kenny Morris has just died, I can’t ignore the fact the Banshees didn’t really come into their pomp until Budgie took over as drummer. For my taste, they also had to find the right producer in Nigel Gray. Lillywhite’s production may have defined British post-punk, but for those, like me, who chose the Once Upon a Time singles collection as their entry point for the band, it is a rough experience. On the debut album, it is all Lillywhite chill and primitive thrashing. Of course, I feel bad for Morris and McKay that they couldn’t intregrate themselves into the Siouxsie/Severin matrix, but The Scream (and Join Hands) show that the Siouxsie/Severin coupling was insufficient on its own. They will go on to do better. Heck, the will go on to do a better Beatles cover. 2.5 This knocked my socks off. Hong Kong Garden was all I knew of this album but I have been marvelling over the rest from first listen. The guitars and drums are very good of course; never less than texturally interesting but Siouxsie Sioux’s voice is absolutely mesmerising all the time. It is hard to praise particular features of her voice outside the context of the actual lines she sings which are inspired musical contrarianism. I almost can’t think of a worse idea for a Beatles cover than Helter Skelter - Hey Jude maybe. But there sits, in magnificent defiance of common sense and most of the original melody, an absolutely inspired version in the midst of this album. Because we have an original to measure against, it also frames the conundrum(s) of what Siouxsie is up to as a singer clearer than any other track. Does she know she’s not merely declaiming in a contemptuous punkish sort of way? That she’s instead singing entirely different notes to the original? Apparently she does, because she repeats the same notes throughout. So when she picks out another hypnotically abrasive note on for example Jigsaw Feeling or Nicotine Stain I know it’s design not accident. Which just makes the whole thing all the more bloody impressive. Hopefully it doesn’t sound too pretentious to say that Siouxsie’s singing put me in mind of another famous puzzler - Pierrot Lunaire. I listened to it straight after The Scream and felt that it had opened up a bit for me. We took a break for a couple of weeks there and I have listened to the half dozen albums on our backlog a few times each at least. This one I have returned to more than any of them and with pleasure every time. 3.5/5

I couldn't really get into this.

I like their later work a lot. Although this is an influential album it's rough around the edges.

Probably need to give this album a couple more spins

Really enjoyed this album, can't say I have ever heard of them before it will definitely listen again

Love Siouxsie and the Banshees but this isn't my favorite album of theirs. Favorite songs: Switch, Hong Kong Garden

Totally respect the influence of this album and its presence on the list, but as a collection of songs, it didn't really do it for me; everything sorta blended together. Liked the vibes more than the execution. 3.5 stars.

Sympa mais sans plus

Hugely influential! Yeah, don’t care.

Bastante guapo

Spiky and alluring Favourite tracks: Helter Skelter, Mirage, Suburban Relapse

No complaints, just not particularly memorable. Like a mid Blondie album

One of the better random, nothing British bands that seem to make up 1/3 of this list but still a random, nothing British band.

A good listen. Could be a 4 maybe from multiple listens but shall go with a 3 for now.

Good stuff by the Queen of Goth

++: Helter Skelter, Metal Postcard (Mittageisen), Suburban Relapse +: Jigsaw Feeling, Carcass, Mirage, Nicotine Stain, Switch +-: Pure, Overground 6,0/10

I have lots of feelings after listening to this. I recognize that it's historically important in setting the sounds of other groups that would come - and do it better. So while I recognize that this needed to walk so that bands like the Joy Division could run, that doesn't mean that I want to give the a participation trophy for their contribution.

Very good, this is a 3,7

Enjoyed this album, particularly liked the last track.

Will forever sound like running around Mexico City to me.

It may be groundbreaking for the musical style of "how-'80s-teens-deal-with-their-angst" and that's a style I'm always on board for, this one just gets a little redundant

Listening session: january 22th, while commuting to intership Listened to before: no Thoughts: I liked the general sound of this album but I have to admit that some songs sounded really similar Favourite tracks: Carcass & Switch

Kinda decent punk thing going on. Although, a lot sounds like it was written on the fly. Maybe that’s just the vibe they were going for. 3.0/5.0

Fun teen goth vibes, plus an absolutely horrendous Beatles cover that is very unpleasant to listen to

Yeah, perfectly fine punk

Funyn to hear "Helter Skelter" for the second day in a row, and a good reminder that everyone likes or ins influenced by the Beatles. The rest of this was not for me. The sound is certainly unique.

I liked it. I'm not a huge fan of that echoy atmosphere, but this album had some cool riffs and vocals. Nothing super exciting, but pretty good background music. 7/10

Suenan a Florence + The Machine pero punk, estuvo bien, se hizo largo el álbum

This is another one I expect was ground breaking at the time (?) but on today's light was mid. Perhaps this is unfair, but either way I will be forgetting about it forever.
