Reviews (page 7 of 13)
Not the biggest singer/songwriter fan and not a diehard Bob Dylan fan, but this album was great! Certainly exceeded my expectations anyway. Storytelling was great, singing was much clearer than I had anticipated. And every song new to me but enjoyed. 4/5
Best songwriter oat tbh
Listened before, but not in a while. Excited to tackle this one again.
It's literally Bob Dylan
this website has made me realize i prefer blonde on blonde but that is not a knock on this album at all
REALLY GOOD ALBUM
Nice variety of tones and tempos, with lyrics that draw you in. Makes me excited to listen to more Dylan
Loved it. 4
Cool
Other then the fact that Bob Dylan sounds like a muppet, had a good time!
Good songwriting, good lyricism, good energy. Not exactly my preferred genre but I still enjoyed it
While Dylan doesn’t have the most melodic voice, he does a lovely job (relatively) harmonizing on this album. I wouldn’t say every vocal performance lands, but he does demonstrate range and I appreciate the risk-taking. Content-wise, I sometimes struggle to connect with Dylan but most of the writing here is vivid and accessible. “Jack of Hearts” isn’t something I wouldn’t want to revisit every day but it’s an undeniably strong piece of art and storytelling. Backing tracks and instrumentation are creative and engaging, never felt like anything overstayed its welcome or should’ve been cut. Harmonica isn’t overused and is balanced well with the guitar and organ (?) elements. Listened to: walking to shuffleboard. Favorite tracks: You’re a Big Girl Now, Idiot Wind, Shelter from the Storm
I've come around on Dylan over the past few years. In fact I'd say I'm a fan. This is probably his last great album and it came after what seemed like quite the recording hiatus. It doesn't match up against Highway61 or Blonde on Blonde, but it headlines his strong second teir
in 1975 listening to this album... what could be go wrong
Лучшая песня - Shelter from the Storm.
Full disclosure - I've listened to enough of Bob Dylan's music on here to know that he's a grossly overrated musician and his music generally sucks. This album is surprisingly different - much more full of life and easy to listen to. Hell... Bob voice is somewhat tolerable here. I guess a broken clock right twice a day after all. 7/10.
Definitely requires a few listens but for me this is Dylan's best album. Low 4.
Another I can't believe I've never listened to before. I need to read the lyrics to really get it I think. Tangled Up in Blue is fantastic. The sound doesn't fully work for me but I know I'm missing out a lot by not paying close attention to the lyrics.
Of all the Dylan albums on this list so far, this is the best. Less harmonica is more.
Not a Dylan album I've listened to much, so enjoyed revising it. Some Dylan classics like Tangled up in Blue and Shelter from the Storm. Definitely worth a listen. 4/5
This is probably the best Dylan album I've listened to. He leans less into his particularly odd singing voice and it helps carry the tune and music much more. Great poetry and songwriting and damn the dude rips on harmonica
Some good. Some almost good
Love the song Tangled Up In Blue. Also added a few more favorites from this album, I'll listen to it again.
Wonderful poet. Voice is another thing
Dammit! I wasn't supposed to enjoy this. I was supposed to be writing about an unintelligible wall of nasal mumblings. About how I just don't see the point, or the appeal. But here I am after thoroughly enjoying my listening time with this album. Dylan at his most accessible and almost relatable. Just quality, folky, bluesy guitar based music.
Excellent, nostalgic enjoyable melodies
4 for bob dylan
Tangled up in blue is such a classic. This whole album is thoughtful and interesting. It’s a deep listen. While I wouldn’t listen to this for daily enjoyment, I can see what makes Dylan such a celebrated musician in this album. First Dylan album I’ve listened to
Bob Dylan is great and fine.
Excellent lyrics with wonderful instrumentals.
Solid. Gotta re-listen to it.
Meet me in the morning, Buckets of rain
Like a Rolling Stone'-achtige hoogtes bivakkeert. 8/10 Highlights: Tangled up in Blue Idiot Wind Buckets of Rain
funny and overall great project from Dylan; probably an 80 or 4.5
I absolutely love the song Tangled up in Blue. Like, 5 stars of love. But I spent my hard earned money in 1991 to see Bob Dylan live, and walked out about 6 songs into the set. Some artists are best appreciated in albums, not shows.
This was definitely familiar (thanks, Dad!). Favorite tracks are Tangled in Blue; Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts; and Shelter from the Storm. 3.5 rounded up to 4.
Between a 3 and a 4, I’m leaning 4. If I ranked the songs: 5 stars: tangled up in blue 4 stars: shelter from the storm 3 stars: everything else, with idiot wind my favorite of these
dylan's storytelling is unmatched. i kinda don't get how people hate his voice on this album. he's sounded way worse. you get used to it after a while, and then the lyrics really come through. i liked the one where he keeps calling someone an idiot. nice one bob. unfortunately, it's paced well, the lyrics are great, i liked every song and am an absolute sucker for folk music.
Folksy
Recently got into Bob Dylan and really enjoyed this album
Normally not a fan, but I enjoyed this one.
Relaxing listen. Interesting outlook on breakup, falling in love, and the duality of it all. Enjoyed Jack of Hearts especially; Tweeter and the Monkey Man epic-like storytelling
80/100 Favourite song: Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts
Another really good record. I’m shocked I like this one also. Maybe it’s the recent Dylan releases that are supposedly terrible.
really liked meet me in the morning, overall album was good, would listen to a lot more
I enjoyed this album.
A bona fide classic of the genre.
Never really got into Dylan but enjoyed this album a lot, will definitely be checking out more of his output.
My first back to front Dylan listen
Not every one of Dylan’s many albums needs to be must hear in a broad sweep of popular music. This is one that you probably should hear. It is a bit of a shame that this list continually brings up the overrated Neil young but Dylan, while here, doesn’t seem to be as noticed. I might be being harsh. Dylan had withdrawn from music. Or at least he’d wound back. A motorbike accident in 1966 saw him release less important albums. However this after a string of smaller albums seems like an attempt to be game changing again without actually trying to be. Some of the love for this album I think is a love for Dylan. But it has some highlights. Given Dylan’s importance as a composer this album should be listened to. But I will always prefer the other greats. 4
A solid album and example of excellent songwriting. Happy for this recommendation as I haven't gone deep into Dylan and ran an album end to end in years. Incredibly simple yet effective lyrics which is of course expected with Dylan. This doesn't quite get five stars from me but damn it was close. Favourite tracks: Simple Twist Of Fate, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, If You See Her Say Hello
Not my favourite but Bob be Bob
banger opener, wonderful, simple instrumentation, what a classic voice. I'm not usually interested in lyrics, but he definitely draws me in. Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts draws on a bit. A few songs are just good, not great. Thinking a 4
I think I'll start to appreciate Dylan more as I'm getting older.
Pas pire Bob, pas pire
Great listen
Peak Dylan. So the question is, how much do you appreciate Bob Dylan?
I've never been a big Dylan person, but also wasn't all that familiar with much of his stuff. Overall I liked it. I thought the first half was more interesting. Tangled up in Blue is a great start. I also like Idiot Wind, after that it dragged on a little bit.
Most Dylan is great, this is really no exception
I like the instrumentals of this one. It sounded country to me, and I’m really into the steel guitar sound.
Fantastisk album
One of his better attempts
Dylan's never sounded so pretty. Worst song also happened to be the longest at almost 9 mins. Best songs: Tangled Up in Blue Simple Twist of Fate You're a Big Girl Now Meet Me in the Morning Shelter From the Storm Buckets of Rain (maybe the best - great guitar work) 4.5
The acoustic work on this album is great. I enjoyed a lot of the tracks even with Bob’s singing
Bad
Ganzes Album ist cool, keine richtige Höhe aber auch keine Tiefen + Meet me in the morning; Lily, Rosemary
favourite: lily rosemary and the jack of hearts, shelter from the storm, idiot wind least favourite: buckets of rain really good mayb 8-9/10
A great, if rather melancholic, listen. A lot of the tracklist definitely has a lot of strongly emotional themes, ranging from heartbreak to loneliness, which in a way is very much reflective of this point in Dylan's life. Admittedly I didn't entirely connect with everything here, but it comes from a very sincere place.
bob. harmonica. guitar. folk fabulousness.
Bob bobby boboh bon, I love you. Great album but a few skipable songs or songs that go on for too long. The last three song combo of If You See Her, Say Hello, Shelter From the Storm, and Buckets of Rain is just freaking beautiful though ❤️
Great cuts off of this one, I personally prefer H61R for the generally stronger hooks, but there's some solid stuff on here. Shelter from the Storm, Simple Twist of Fate (thanks Graydon), and Buckets of Rain are my favorites.
4 stars
Classic album in which you know nearly every song.
This is so much better than highway 61, which seems to rate higher on the various album lists. Really enjoyed this
It really does feel like there are an excessive amount of Bob Dylan albums that are considered essential. This is the fourth one that I’ve been generated, and I haven’t particularly enjoyed the others very much. I can’t say that I’m full of excitement for today’s listen. Songs I already knew: Tangled Up In Blue Favourites: Tangled Up In Blue, You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go This really was a pleasant surprise. Either his music style is slowly growing on me, or this album was just a lot better than the others I’ve heard. His voice seems less silly for most of the album, but it does teeter over into annoying on rare occasions. I really appreciated the songwriting here, and especially the storytelling. This is the best of the Bob Dylan albums I’ve heard, and it’s not even close.
I recognize that he is an icon, but he’s a bit before my time, so I’m not moved to kiss the ring. This is not his best work, but towards the top. He’s got some great songs, and a couple of good albums, but nothing of special note since the 70’s. Now he’s just an old dude living out the past, selling out arenas for folks living out the past. That’s alright, just not for me.
It's the better Dylan album with some deep lyrics.
Some of the best musicians are also poets. I'm not much of a blues fan but Meet Me in the Morning is a damn good blues song. Tangled up in blues.
I’m a big word person, and Bob Dylan just writes great lyrics, which really shine in his work. Even with songs that don’t really grab me, I’m a fan of the stories he writes with music. And the harmonica just always does it for me. Lots of great stuff on this one!
Great with cooking vodka sauce pasta and Pinot Grigio
I don't think I've listened to a more powerful lyricist yet on this journey. I only wish I liked Dylan's vocals more, some tracks are just a bit much. But there's no denying the passion behind every song, and I have an immense respect for this album. Top tracks: Idiot Wind, You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, Shelter From the Storm, Buckets of Rain
Decent album.
I'd probably be more into Dylan if someone else sang his music....still enjoyed this one a great deal. Storytelling mastery.
Contains several of my favourite Bob Dylan songs
Bob Dylan is an excellent writer of music. I liked his other album that we had before kore than this one but it was another solid entry from him. Easy to listen to and offers re-listenability.
Makes me want to take a road trip.
Gute Album von ihm. Aber nicht das beste.
Bobby D is the shit. Tangled Up in Blue is a great song.
What a fabulous, poet and songwriter, but who told him he could sing, John Prine?
I don’t have any stand out tracks each one was equally wonderful.
It's really good, and I quite like it, but this album did not necessarily wow me like some others
Ciężko zaklasyfikować to do jakiegoś konkretnego gatunku muzycznego. 4/5
Liked this.
Classic Dylan. Great album
Bittersweet and melancholy, this is a great album for a rainy day. I'm not a heavy Dylan devotee, but I've grown to better appreciate his work. This and Blonde On Blonde are good albums to own if you have any appreciation for Dylan at all.
Not a huge Dylan fan but must admit this is a great piece of work
He's good
Like listening to stories.
Not only did Dylan tap into into this rich vein of poetic magic, somehow he was able to keep working it for absolutely years and years. Mind boggling. This is probably a 5 star album but I'm giving it a 4 today just because
Album 318 of 1001 Bob Dylan - Blood on the Tracks Rating : 4 / 5 Enjoy this, though maybe not as much as other Dylan albums but enough to give it this rating. Will need to go back and give the whole thing another listen, as this morning was the first in almost a year where somebody just totally screwed up my morning/listening routine. I've heard it many times before, so I knew where I stood on this one.
Nearly a decade after Blonde On Blonde, one would figure that Bob Dylan would start to slip as a songwriter, and would not even touch the greatness that was his mid-60s album run, and while this is technically true, I can't imagine anything topping Blonde on Blonde for me, this does attempt to get pretty close, which is impressive for an artist fifteen years into their professional career. This album contains the type of "white guy with guitar" shtick that I actually enjoy; introspective lyrics, soulful guitar playing, and sometimes another couple of instruments in there to really bring the point home. The more blues-folk-rock tracks near the middle do disrupt the album in a way in which it doesn't really recover, but that A side really does the trick at being a solid showing when for most artists this would be the peak of their careers. This, however, just comes off as a good, but otherwise inoffensive part of Dylan's career.
Classic
Soothing voice. I could see myself listening to more of him
Very good. I've never been big on Dylan, but now that I'm older I definitely "get" him a lot more. Absolutely brilliant storyteller. If I have a critique, I'd say it does drag a little bit by the end.
Really great Dylan record. Some would say a return to form. Some great songs and some classic off kilter ones. Just a solid listen for a lazy Sunday for sure.
Typisch "Dylan". Sehr angenehm.
Standout songs: Simple twist of fate Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts Shelter from the storm
Very listenable. Enjoyed this quite a lot.
4/5 Love Bob Dylan, its not "completely" my thing but it is easily listening and Bob's influence on rock and roll in the 20th century is easily noticeable
Not my favorite Bob Dylan album. It was a slow start. I started to like this album after the second half, and I enjoyed “Shelter from the Storm”
Great!
Overall, not one of my favorites
this album has really good storytelling, and paints a vivid experience of a variety of experiences. the singing is not spectacular but just has a really good vibe to it.
It's Dylan
Was going to complain as this is the sixth! BD album on this list which is way to much but it's still a great piece of music, not entirely my thing but can appreciate.
Good, makes me sleepy
really enjoyed this
Have never been a big fan of Dylan's music. Was already famiiar with several of these songs. Knowing the background of this album now, though, I found all the songs more affecting than they were in the past.
I don't have an understanding for how classic this album is, but it's clearly good songwriting.
It's Bob Dylan
Good album.
Love some Bob Dylan and his whiny, nasaly voice.
Enjoyed this more than I was expecting, will definitely have to re-listen to it in the future.
Digg men litt langdratt
Oh shit, do I like Dylan now? First Neil Young, and now this? Anyway this is pretty good, perhaps my favorite of the three Dylan albums we've had so far.
Not much to be said here.
An incredible album with some of Dylan’s best tracks.
Solid Dylan album. Not my favorite one of his but I did enjoy it
Man I am just not a bob dylan fan. This is pretty good tho, some nonfolk sensibilites. Altrock vibes with some piano sections and chords. And his singing is TOO bob dylan-ish. Damn i might like this. Alright BD...u got this one
My first time really getting big Dyl. His vocal idiosyncrasies were more charming that annoying this time around, and the compositions were simple and effective. It's not on the level that's gonna make him an artist I dip into over and over yet, but I'm certainly further on the way. Three and a half. Fave track: You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go
I enjoyed it but I think I like his earlier stuff a bit more, at least at this point where I’m working through all of his discography for the first time.
Bob Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks," released in 1975, is a poetic and emotionally charged journey through love, heartbreak, and self-reflection. The album's stripped-down production and Dylan's introspective lyrics, as heard in tracks like "Tangled Up in Blue" and "Simple Twist of Fate," create an intimate and timeless experience. The acoustic arrangements and Dylan's evocative storytelling capture the essence of folk and rock. While not as politically charged as some of his earlier work, "Blood on the Tracks" is a masterclass in songwriting and earns a well-deserved 4/5 for its enduring impact and contribution to the singer-songwriter genre.
Some of Dylan’s best work. The songs are great and really flow well together on the album. 4.5/5 Will listen again
solid
Definitely heard of Bob Dylan, not the album though. Nice vibes so far :) enjoyed, 4/5 but maybe not library material.
Certainly another solid showing from Bobby D, though his 60's stuff really does shine over this to my ears. Excellent songwriting as always, but here his vocals to just get away from him a bit too much to earn him a 5.
I liked it quite a bit. Although, it made me realize why Bob is not necessarily one of the best singers, and was way better at songwriting to compensate.
Pretty good. I enjoy Dylan as a whole, however, listening to an entire album straight through has been a bit taxing in the past and this album proves no different. I can see why this was very influential to so many artists in various genres. If I listen to the music deeply, I appreciate it more. Just casually listening while doing other things kind of ruins the sound and experience of the music.
"Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts" is my favourite long track by Bob Dylan. "Tangled up in blue" and "Simple Twist of the Fate" are the other classic tracks on this album.
Could it be that I actually like Dylan?
This is the album I feel casts the best wide accurate representation of dylan.
Awesome. Classic. Good music
Careless love, brilliant
A classic of folk, not always my thing but pretty spectacular
Tldl
I was unable to sit down all at once and listen to the album all in one sitting which definitely influenced my listening experience, but maybe on a different day I would have a different experience with this album— of course it’s incredible though, it’s Bob Dylan— I don’t think there’s much more to say about it
Very good. Bob Dylan is legendary
This is a masterpiece. First time listening to Bob Dylan. I love the poetic, story-rich writing and unique vocal style on this album.
Classic bob dylan. You always knew it was gonna be good. The harmonica is so fun and unique.
What I wanted with bob dylan 4/5 so great. I now get the storytelling aspect.
Bob Dylan is such an interesting musician, he isn't the greatest singer but his voice fits the vibe perfectly. I really liked the album but it started to get slightly worse at the end of the album. I really like the harmonica that Bob pulls out, it really ties it all together and boy does he go hard with it. I haven't listened to a lot of Bob dylan, but I went through a phase of this style of music while I was playing a videogame set in viet nam. This isn't my favorite album he has released, and does not include the fan favorites such as blowin in the wind, The times, they are a-changing, and knocking on heavens door. Great album, I will be listening to it more in the future. Four stars because it's not the best that Bob Dylan can do.
Bob Dylan is obviously one of the best. I've never been an avid listener but his music is great. There's something comforting about it. He's not even that great of a singer but the storytelling and simple, classic rock and roll sound make the whole package. I especially like Tangled up in Blue, Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts, and Shelter from the Storm. Started to lose me on Meet Me in the Morning.
Classic Dylan -- driving, stripped back, groovy.
Pretty nifty, some songs in the first half of the album were reminiscent of David Bowie which I thought was nice
I still don’t love Bob’s voice or style, but don’t begrudge those who do. The lyrics thing though, I get it.
Not bad
as bob goes this was fairly decent. you really have to be in the mood for him though.
Another really cool Bob Dylan album. I probably prefer Bringing it all back home still, because I feel like this album drops off a tiny bit in the second half, but its still really good.
I like the first syllable rhymes he does with LACES of my shoes, and FREIGHT train. "Twist of Fate" I never heard before, great song. Jeff Buckley does a better "If you see her, say hello" but Bob wrote it, I guess.
Very enjoyable
Welp, it happened. This is the 5th Bab Dylan album I've gotten, and for whatever reason, he must be growing on me. This was my favorite of his yet. Enjoyed it. Didn't feel attacked by a harmonica.
Love Dylan. Good album. Some great songs on it
I am no longer a Bob Dylan denier.
quality album, I don’t like his voice, lyrics are good
Better than I thought it would be
This is a very well crafted album with amazing songwriting and great instrumentation! I really dig a lot of the songs here on both a compositional and lyrical level. Bravo Bobby
stand out track - Simple Twist of Fate
I love story telling in music, and Bob Dylan does this. His music is easy to listen to and enjoyable. I find it endearing that he knows his style of music and loves creating within his style. You can also tell that he takes his creations seriously.
Some really great songs here - Simple Twist of Fate added to permanent rotation
Only one track in and I’m already lovingggg this little folk vibe we have going on. This little yeehaw music I can handle like it’s giving my deep new americana shit and it’s slaying. “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” is really nice. His style and voice are very reminiscent of another artist I really enjoy but I can’t figure out their nameeee. “If You See Her, Say Hello” is so sad hello. Wait because I love “Buckets of Rain”. W albummmm.
3.5/5 Simple Twist of Fate Shelter from the Storm
I like the opener - Tangled up in Blue Like most of it, for good vibes
Jack of Hearts Shelter from the Storm Good songs
Hard to hear all the lyrics - this is my first full Bob Dylan album. Harmonica is great and there’s more instruments than I anticipated. Lots of country-esque guitar strumming.
Bob Dylan is a fantastic songwriter. The biggest issue is I think his songs typically sound better when sung by other people. Great album by a great artist but only 4/5 because it did start to feel a little “samesy” as I was listening.
Very good album. my boyfriend really likes the song called shelter in the storm
amazing album, tangled up in blue en shelter for the storm
catchy.
I liked the story telling. 3.7/5
Enjoy this Dylan album more than most!
4.5
Really appreciated the craftsmanship on this album. The recording quality is excellent. The band itself sounds great. I think people often make fun of Bob Dylan voice for sounding strange, but I find it really beautiful here. Maybe the people that make fun of it find it beautiful too. But it’s truly unique, and his lyrics are unmatched. The only trouble I have is when my mind drifts, and I find myself not understanding the story of the song I have to re-listen. Definitely going in the library.
i feel like im listening to history. chillin in the time machine
Dylan definitely isn't my favorite. I can see why people love him, and I can see why people can't stand him. That being said, I did enjoy this album. I feel like it was hard to appreciate the lyrics on first listen, but the melodies were excellent and the singing was...mostly decent. There were definitely points where Dylan's inflections and flourishes detracted a lot from the music.
Like most of the songs and would listen again
Great folk album. Dylan’s mature voice really adds to the music. Definitely need to listen when I’m looking for something more low key and bare
3.5
Lovely driving music through rural PA. 4/5
Very bob dylan
The production on some songs is kind of weird to me, Thin? Echoey? But I really like the flow of these songs, Tangled up in Blue to Simple Twist of Fate is a great start to the album, ends beautifully with Shelter from the Storm and Bucket’s of Rain. Will definitely revisit. 4.5
Bob Dylan has been one of those artists where I’ve always known of his popular material, but have never taken the time to sit down with his music and really feel it. This album proved to me that he is a rewarding listen when time is put in. The emotion and feel of these songs is apparent, and the lyricism is of course top notch. Even the instrumentation, which was considered mediocre at the time of release, perfectly matches the themes and style Dylan was creating at the time. This album has inspired me to experience more of Dylan’s output, as it is deserved.
Second Bob Dylan album, with classics such as "Tangled up in Blue" and "Shelter from the Storm". Easy listening.
This guy writes a lot of long songs.
I can understand Bob Dylan's appeal, being such an influential figure to so many artists is a great feat, but I can not understand why. Dylan's strong point is definitely his poetry, but having good songwriting is not going to save any of these songs from being decent. A lot of these tunes do drag on as such you can get the gist of the song by listening to it for 5 seconds, as its like that in its entirety. I am under the impression that good instrumentals and a great voice can save mediocre lyricism, but not the other way around. If Dylan experimented more on different sounds or at least switched it up a couple of times I would really really love this record, as I do like the genre of folk. There are some really good songs here, and his level of songwriting puts me in a fantasy where I am living through his songs. I also found his voice to be somewhat decent which is contrary to a lot of opinions. Most of the tracks here are quite good, the storytelling really puts you in a certain narrative like no other, this album is very good. Favourites: Tangled up in Blue / Simple Twist of Fate / You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go / Meet Me in the Morning / Buckets of Rain
4 Sad Dylan is best Dylan - his claims that this album is in no way autobiographical is such BS. Like, you expect us to believe that, while separating from his wife, the guy just so happens to go from writing about politics to writing about failed relationships and that there’s no connection? Look man, there’s no shame in needing an outlet. Anyway, as is the case with most anguished musicians, Dylan’s hardship ended up being a blessing for the musical world. Really, really good album - one in which its charm is still growing on me four listens later. And yes, I listened to this four times. At first I told myself it was just because I hadn’t given it a proper listen, but sitting here now I realize that I was really just trying to embrace everything it has to offer - something I’m still in the process of doing even now. I still have no idea what exactly is going on in a couple songs, like Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts in particular, but they all still managed to speak to me in some manner or another. Far and away the best song on the album is Tangled Up in Blue, which may not only be the best song Dylan ever wrote, but “We always did feel the same/We just saw it from a different point of view” may also be one of his greatest lyrics. As someone who has never been in a relationship with a redheaded topless dancer, lyrics like that one still allow the song to resonate with me in a way that makes me reflect on my own personal failed relationships. And that’s really the magic of this album - just about every song here has that ability. Admittedly, some spoke to me more than others, but as a whole, this a really well-written and well-structured album, and I can see why it’s held in such high regard. I’ll definitely be giving it another listen.
I'm drawn more to this album than most of his others. Just so many great tracks on this one. I hear a different type of depth in these songs, a maturity of sorts, but it's not overly self-referential or ponderous. I'm still very much engaged and entertained. Superb.
This was the fourth or fifth time listening to this album from start to finish. In general, Bob Dylan's singing style can be wearing at times, but I continue to thoroughly enjoy his music despite this. This is one of my favorite albums of his.
This was really good. Some songs I knew but lots I hadn't heard before. The man can sure put together an album, no doubt about that.
listened b4, gr8 for when ur emo but im not rn.
Another solid Bob Dylan album. "Tangled Up in Blue" and "Idiot Wind" are great tracks.
Fave Bob D album
I think this album is slightly overrated, but it’s still prime Dylan and Shelter from the Storm is a classic
There's something in this album that keeps me from enjoying it to what I presume is the intended effect. Dylan's songwriting and storytelling are magnificent, it's just that, well, his voice is so goddamn goofy that it takes me out of all the sorrow and moroseness that I was expecting to hear coming in. It sounds like he's smiling on every track-- and it's hard for me to not just smile along when I pick that up. It's still a stroke of genius, though... even with the false advertising I received. A different 4/5 than I expected to give.
Stellar storytelling all over this album, but much different from the Freewheelin Bob Dylan I listened to earlier (which was my first Dylan album ever). While that one was full of storytelling and commentary on the social and political climate at the time, this one felt more personal, directly pulling from the problems with the relationship with his then wife, and the heartbreak, desperation, and unease leading to their divorce. It's immensely well done in that regard, with songs like Simple Twist of Fate and You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go. The instrumentation mirrors the album mentioned previously, which honestly is a strength in simplicity and lets the storytelling shine. This is something I can see myself listening to again to appreciate things I may have missed, there's so much going on in the lyrics that I feel like one listen doesn't do it justice. But it was very much enjoyable.
i always start sceptical but then its just superb songwriting and i have to admit its nice
This is a nice album with some great songwriting and storytelling. Not sure if it's my favourite Bob Dylan album but think I was in the wrong situation to appreciate this folk album to its fullest. Still very good though and I might come back to it when I need some emotional folk music. Favourite: Meet Me in the Morning
4.25
I had never heard a Bob Dylan album from start to finish. I really enjoyed it!
Some great stuff, a few forgettable ones
I always like a little Bob Dylan. He has that tone in his voice that you need to be in the mood for like Willie Nelson or Tom Waits. Tangled up in Blue and Shelter from the Storm are great. Really enjoyed Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts.
Tangled Up in Blue (probably the best song he ever made), Idiot Wind, You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go, Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts and Shelter from the Storm. Obviously great lyrics and story telling. A little slow in places. Dylan is almost too advanced for me.
Fantastic story telling. The instrumentation is a little too country sounding for my taste but despite that it's a great album. FS: Tangled, Idiot
A tuneful album by Bob standards. Great lyrics.
Good songs are great but he still can’t sing for shit
Maybe not my favorite Dylan album but excellent. Idiot Wind, You’re Gonna Make Me Lonely, and Rosemary are my favorites - just classic Dylan spitting bars.
Musically, I would say this one is lacking a bit but the strength of these songs is in the storytelling and that’s enough to carry this album to 4 stars
I, like many amateur music listeners, have heard a handful of dylan tracks. ‘Like a Rolling Stone’ and ‘Knocking on Heavens Door’ are just two that immediately come to me. Blood on the Tracks is the first dylan album i have listened to entirely and what a treat it was. dylan is famed for his poetry and narrative writing in the lyrics and this album shines that skill brightly. each track contains its own story, all with sentiment, heartbreak and loneliness, and even then that doesn’t contain the range of emotions. these themes pair neatly with his vocals; raspy and nasally and perfectly fits the mystical and whimsical nature of the stories in the tracks, much like the decision to go back to folk rock. one day i will grow to enjoy folk music more, which does impact my overall enjoyment of the album, but that doesn’t mean a gal can’t change, nor does it change how brilliant this album is.
First and I think only Bob Dylan on the list that I actually properly enjoyed, rather than tolerated
Some classic tunes
Pretty good, although I am not surprised.
This is definitely a great era of Dylan! Upbeat, fun story telling, great humour and some heartfelt ones thrown in there. I wasn't overly familiar with the album as a whole but really glad that I've heard it.
Great
Dylan is a great lyrical storyteller. The raspy voice along with the folk rock sound just really works together well.
An unbelievable 6th Dylan album in my first 200 reviews. I do actually like this one and have it on vinyl. The songs are all melodic without cranking up the "Dylan voice" too hard.
Some tracks are amazing, others less so.
My first experience of listening to Dylan and I liked it
Personally I like 'Desire' better but I like this phase of Dylan. He's a real storyteller- I won't say he doesn't regurgitate the same songs, subject matter or style but he does do it well.....
It's Bob Dylan:))
Not much to say beyond what has already been said. Classic Bob, the best of his surreal imagery, solid backing band and vivid storytelling. 🂻🂻🂻🂻
Really interesting and thought provoking album.
4/5
Dylan was one of those artists that passed me by for years. I was in my late thirties before I listened to any of his albums. This was the first and it’s my favourite by miles.
Awesome folk singles in here
4 It’s Bob Dylan
Yet ANOTHER album that reminds me of driving with my dad. Never been a huge Dylanhead myself but I really do love this album and the memories tied to it
One of our Dad’s favorite albums. I really solid album with a ton of fun stories sprinkled throughout. Personally, it’s my 4th favorite Dylan album. But that’s still like a 4.2/5 for me.
Definitely one of my favourite Dylans
A fine album by Mr. Zimmerman. Almost flawless. The first three tracks are a great listen. It kind of drags in the middle, but that's just me. It finishes strong.
4.0 + This one gives me vibes. I'm reminded of a gritty New York-based film from the 1970's (e.g. "Dog Day Afternoon"). We see shots of morning commuters bustling through midtown, subway cars riddled with graffiti, honking cars sending up street debris in their wake. Against this backdrop, our everyman hero (white dude with feathered hair, flared jeans and tight leather jacket) is navigating a sea of unfriendly faces searching for his one true love. He regrets some of his past flings ("Tangled Up in Blue") but is open to new possibilities ("Simple Twist of Fate"). Along the way he finds himself smitten ("You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome..."). After some distractions and general romantic turbulence ("Lily, Rosemary.."), our hero gets the girl and they fall in love ("Shelter From the Storm"). Roll credits.
This is Dylan at his commercial best. Moving away from the ultra folky sound and moving towards the then contemporary band stylings in the 70s this album combines his masterful songwriting with a full ensemble of instrumentals. Probably one of his best albums and has some if his best songs. This is one that can be replayed many times and new lyrics will be picked up each listen. Really enjoyed this album. 8.2/10
Dylan's albums are like pizza: Even bad pizza is good
Best: Meet Me in the Morning Worst: You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome Very enjoyable
Not listened to much Dylan before. Was quite good for a work focus session
Classic Dylan. Enjoyed running through a whole album of his - it's been a while!
There are so many versions of Bob Dylan. Do people have a preference on which Dylan is their favorite? How polarizing is his voice? Based on strong familiarity with a few Dylans, I love his harmonica, I love his opting for lyric repetition in a verse instead of a traditional chorus, and it's hard to beat his story telling. A love song like "Simple Twist of Fate" definitely gets to me. A story forcing the listener to travel from one twist to the next in the tale of a hopeless romantic. I'm a sucker for lyrics. "Meet me in the Morning" definitely popped to me. Bob slowed it down a bit, with the oomph in his voice just felt a little different here, and the two guitars ending the song felt right. "If You See Her, Say Hello" reminded me of "Girl From the North Country" with some similarities in lyrics. "Buckets of Rain" is a nice ending to lull me away from the emotional journey that was Blood On The Tracks. "Tangled Up in Blue" and "Idiot Wind" definitely have a little nostalgia factor from youth. Yet there's almost too much all over the place. The biggest example for me being a song like "Lily, Rosemary, and the Jack of Hearts". Too much happening to hear in just one listen. I wish I had more time to listen to this album before a final rating. It comes to me as a 4 off the bat because of expectations I (unfairly?) put on this album before listening. Any Bob Dylan album I listen to is a slow burn while I familiarize myself with his stories, and pick up on themes and derive meaning more and more with time. Come back to me in a week or two. Most likely a future 5, but that's not how this works.
Songs were great, but blended together because they were based on stories, which I had a hard time picking up the first listen. Still a wonderful album with great guitar and harmonica
Nice album!
Lovely album, you can definetely manage not being the greatest singer when your songs are good enough
I like it. This kind of 70s stuff is very much in my comfort zone. It makes me think of summer and the Bob Dylan-ish phase I went through in college when I was smoking other people's weed and going around braless a lot.
I’m not familiar with Dylan’s discography and know only mainstream tracks like One more cup of coffee or Like a rolling stone, but I like his music. So, I don’t feel I’m able to judge it somehow or make any comparisons. Just want to say, the album is cozy and pleasant, I enjoyed the ride!
I've always struggled to get into Dylan, whilst of course recognising that what he does is unique and lyrically brilliant. This is a great album though, and reminds me of what I'm missing.
O grande mestre e pa
The best Dylan? Hmm.
I still struggle with Dylan, but the song writing here is undeniably great
Fine album from Bob’s back catalogue. 4/5
Despite my overall affinity for, and obsession with folk music, i still find myself unable to warm up to Bob Dylan, inarguably the king of folk itself. i know that “Like a Rolling Stone” is one of the greatest songs ever written — a jeeringly cynical take on the humanistic inclination for individualism — and yet, i don’t know that there’s any songs on Blood on the Tracks that attempt to match the heights of that masterwork. i can hear the brilliance: “Tangled up in Blue” is a hell of a way to open an album — ruminations on love don’t get any more searing; “You’re Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go” is rich and evocative in its descriptions of romantic pain; and if any song thus far could even attempt to challenge “Like a Rolling Stone”, “If You See Her, Say Hello” might have a chance. Dylan is a brilliant songwriter, heaping pages and pages of story in a single stanza, playing with words like a swiss blade. but i still struggle to connect here — maybe it’s because nothing on here sounds novel to me as they clearly did in 1975, or maybe this is the wrong Dylan album to start with as someone who’s never listened to much of his work beyond “Like a Rolling Stone” (and the masterful “Murder Most Foul”, a late-era Dylan that ripped me to pieces, minute after minute). there’s a bounty to love on Blood on the Tracks, but it’s obvious my Dylan journey does not begin here.
I'm not a big Dylan fan but I liked this one. Has probably my favorite of his, Tangled Up In Blue.
Great album with some all-timers like 'Tangled Up in Blue' and 'Shelter from the Storm'. Gonna have to take a whole star off for 'Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts', which properly sets my teeth on edge.
a classic though the first track is the best
I've often felt that Dylan was one of those artists that I did not pay enough attention to. This was a great piece of work that showed that not all highly successful artists just phone it in as they get older.
Definitely my favourite Dylan record.
Super. Bob Dylan never disapoints
Dylan, not all are gems, but he's a master and I enjoy the sound.
Great opener. I like Dylan when he is louder and showing more energy and I love a good strong opener like "Tangled up in Blue". "Idiot Wind" has some Dylan tropes (for lack of a better word) that I don't particularly like- like these little end-of-phrase SHOUTS at higher pitches that I always found to be kind of annoying. 2:25-2:30 the lyric "are", 2:38 "stars". I think they are kind of like an easy way out of a phrase when he can't figure out what to do with the end of a melody. i do really like the lyrics and performance though and overall the song is too good to be brought down by these little vocal things that I don't personally love. I like the next track, "You're Gonna Make Me Lonesome When You Go". The guitar work is impressive and uses more color chords (sus2 and sus4's) which is atypical for really straightforward folk singer-songwriter music. The closer, "Buckets of Rain", was a nice track to hear while sitting next to an open window with an all-day rain. Nice to have something related to rain / a rainy day and not be either jazz or gloomy. Overall, this is a great Dylan album. Middle/high 4/5.
Blood on the Tracks is clearly massive Dylan, but contains precious little bombast. Its concentration is in tenderness, but it also manages to prevent fifty minutes from dragging. Some excellent songwriting, not totally opaque to a first and amateur listen.
I don't really like Bob Dylan. But I really liked this.
Never listened to this Dylan album. Really excellent, surprised I'd never heard it. 4 stars, may grow into a 5 with time
Not my default Dylan album to listen to, with Desire or the classic 60s ones more typical. There are lots of great tunes on here but it's a bit less varied than his other great records. I get the praise, but there are better ones!
One of Bob's best.
Songwriting at its peak
Classic
pretty ok nice jingly jangly folk rock with lots of soul but sometimes boring compositions.
Despite not being a fan of Bob Dylan, this one was decent. Prefer his acoustic stuff more so it fits right in my street, even if his twang can be annoying. Shelter in the Storm and Tangled up in Blue were the highlights, and no song was particularly weak.
Listens: at least 5 Enjoyed: yeah Gave this a few extra listens as I was tempted to give it a 5. However I just feel like something's missing. I appreciate it as a masterpiece and would definitely go back to it. I just didn't connect with it, I didn't love. But it would be a very very high 4
4.5
Classic album, engaging songwriting throughout.
Not his best one, but among his better ones - at least from the four or five Dylan albums we've had on this list so far. The album starts with the best song and can't keep up that same quality unfortunately - but still a very good listen.
Amazing
4.75
One of my fave albums.. coming back to it is always a joy. Classic.
I mean it's Bob Dylan. It's groovy, it's bluegrassy, it's got it's own twang. I ca
Pretty okay
This album was fantastic, i knew Tangled Up in Blue was great but hadn't heard the rest. The standout track gor me was Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts It's still a Bob Dylan record though, and like most they come off feeling a bit.. formulaic at the end? Not that it's bad, just a bit too similar to his other work to give it 5 stars. Perhaps multiple listens would convince me otherwise
Tangled up in blue- interesting and complex narrative with a short hook and a great instrumental👍 Simple twist of fate- another solid narrative👍 You're a big girl now- pretty devastating song about an almost one sided breakup👍 Idiot wind - bit too long and meandering for my tastes You're going to make me lone some when you go- pretty catchy👍 Meet me in the morning- bit samey after a while Lily, Rosemary and the Jack of Hearts - not something would want to listen to frequently, but enjoyable If you see her say hello - conflict between obvious vulnerability that he feels and his attempt to present as stoic masculine figure👍 Shelter from the storm - One of the weaker tracks Buckets of rain- just okay All in all, l was pleasantly surprised as l wouldn't consider myself a fan of Bob Dylan. However, some very good tracks on here 4/5
Nice chilled out vibe
Good old Bob Dylan sound
My third favourite Bob Dylan album. Tangled up in Blue is arguably my favourite Dylan track and overall it is a perfect folk album that can be appreciated by anyone not just the Dylan die hards
VINTAGE BOB; GOOD TRACKS ON THIS ALBUM.
really great, very rich and layered with great lyricism and unique vocals.
ok
He's got a great voice but outside of the hits it kinda fell short for me
Strong album from the master of the nasal vocals. The arrangements are really great, a lot less minimalistic than his earlier stuff, and the lyrics are quite exquisite. Strong 4.
