Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Never going to be as good as the smiths, but a good record nonetheless the less

A little more poppy and upbeat version of the Smith's. Good listen.

The Smiths-frontmann Morrissey, her med et solo-prosjekt. Top 3: The National Front Disco, You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side, You’re The One for Me, Fatty

A bit disjointed in the rock genres that it emulates but Morrissey's voice is very same-y. Fine.

Bra throwback til Trøndertun! Skikkelig rock n roll. Får kanskje meir lyst å hør på the smiths?

There is too much Morrissey on this list but I would not cut this one. A fun album! 3.5

I've tried but Smiths/Morrisey doesn't do it for me. Mid

I’m too tired to try to figure out why everyone hates Morrissey. I thought this was good.

Mediocre in a good way

Fuck morrisey. Sounds like grunge wave. 2.6

This is the best Morrissey album I’ve heard so far, and this is the fourth one I've gotten so far. I give most of the credit to the band rather than Morrissey himself, because the music finally has some punch and energy behind it. The lyrics are still mostly stupid though.

I thought it was a good album, nothing special

Mozza is a funny and weird and controversial guy - but I have a soft spot for his whining. This isn’t my favourite Morrissey album but it’s got a couple of great tracks.

Not my favorite Morrissey album and while I should be more conflicted with my fondness for him and his music there is just something about his style that I always adore. And c’mon…that album cover!

Let's say it can be boring, but some tracks are nice. Sometimes I can't stand his voice, though. And Johnny Marr and Andy Rourke are the best Smiths.

Morrisey tries to rock here, and mostly succeeds. As far as pop music goes, this has some weightiness. "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" and "You're the One For Me, Fatty" are strange and entertaining. Your Arsenal didn't leave a lasting impression, though. It's not as ambitious as the Smiths which is both good - The Smiths wereobnoxious at times - and bad, these songs mostly lack the drama and intimacy of The Smiths, making them less impactful. Too much Morrisey on the list.

Morrissey is a known asshole and while I like to veto albums of the "asshole" category (namely Kid Rock and Kanye West), I attribute his assholeness as an overly opinionated wanker that translates to his songwriting (half the time, essentially anytime he's not thinking about himself it's good). Or to put it bluntly, he hasn't gone full nazi. Personally I blame the Britishness, especially the tabloids. I don't think this album is as good as The Smiths stuff, but it convinced me that Morrissey is a person who is able to succeed in spite of himself, very rare to find nowadays. He can find good guitarists, great producers/engineers and essentially surround himself with people that know what they're doing. Incredible stuff. Your Arsenal starts well, really dig the first two tracks. Didn't like the next two following them. The rest was somewhere between okay and average, save for "You're the One for Me, Fatty" (what's with this dude and long song titles). I liked that one. Morrissey was a big enough name to get a spot on this list, but he has two records on this list. I haven't listened to the other to say which one "deserves" a spot over the other, but I think it's safe to say he doesn't need two albums on here. Would really like to give this two stars because Morrissey is a prick, but the overall album is a perfectly cromulent three stars, in spite of himself.

Jangle & Glam. Cool surf sounds but sadly just on the opener. A mix of sounds that synthesizes the wave of bands that followed the Smiths in twee indie pop (c86), artsy college rock (REM), and his classic touchstones - 60s girl group and 70s glam - into a blend that anticipates some of the more literate Britpop that would come shortly (pulp, suede). The production sounds good and his voice is in good shape, still some life to his performance. Lots of drama and self pity and dodgy (especially in retrospect) nostalgic nationalist declinism.

He’s an ass hat, but you can’t deny the guy’s talent. It’s a shame he is such an ass hat.

Really liked it!

Good not great. We hate it when our friends become successful was low key funny…

We’ll Let You Know sounds like the smiths. Wham okay he’s the lead singer of the smiths. Well go team

Second Morrissey album in under a week. It’s ok. A lot more heavy guitar than the other album. I don’t hate it.

There's objectively too much Morrisey on this list.

I'm finding Morrissey less insufferable than usual, but the music is mostly kind of boring. "The National Front Disco" is probably the best song. "We'll Let You Know" is probably the worst. Just a pile of mid for the most part.

Great. But it lacks Johnny Marr.

3+ Stars (9/15)

First few cuts had heavy guitar to offset that voice, then not so much

I like the songs that sound like the Smiths

He makes decent music, but I still hate Morrisey.

3/5 Great "dad rock" album, first few tracks really set the mood for me, maybe something to listen to on a roadtrip when the mood is right.

I liked it, unfortunately. Docked points tho. 3.

It was quite alright actually.

I have no problem with Morrissey. I don't care if he whinges all the time or whether he is a vegan or not. At least he has something to say. And the music was ok too.

I like Morissey fine, although the whining voice can sometimes get a bit grating. This album is good. But it’s not “must listen before you die” good. Morrissey’s best work was with the Smiths. That band had all the right elements and made incredible music. Morissey’s solo work just wasn’t as special. Again, this record is totally fine, with a few standouts. But that’s about all I can say for it.

FFS why do I have to have this MELT again! Actually pleasantly surprised by the groove and backing of these tracks. But then he just comes along with that voice and cadence. Every bit of me curls up and dies. Could be such great songs with different vox - big, hard hitting and impactful. And yet…. “We are the last truly British people you will ever know.” What a tosser. Instruments 4/5. Morrisey 1/5. A generous 3*

Morrissey is grand if you don't take him seriously

Really tight Morrissey record. The band in particular sound great and the production is tight too, I feel like I'm getting a motivated party of musicians here. I really like the very 1980's lead guitar playing with it's tasteful washy wails and articulate stabs. The first few tracks are standouts and remind me a bit of the band Living Colour. All in all it's a good record, but in the big scheme of things I think it's missing something that makes it one of the 1001 best of all time.

To me every album by The Smiths is a masterpiece. Solo albums by Morrissey not so much. The Fatty song sounds like it could be on the Queen is Dead album but the rest of the songs seem to have lost the Morrissey magic.

I can understand the Smiths being on this list a couple times but FOUR Morrissey albums?? Goodness

Liked this more than I expected, as Morrissey is a twat.

This album felt okay to me, but enjoyed some of his other songs quite a bit. I like his style and was surprised most of his stuff was from the 90s, definitely an older feel!

I loved his voice. And the songs were okay.

Somehow I thought that was a live album, maybe have some feeling of it. Unpolished, more direct approach to the songs.

The album was very consistent, almost too consistent. The songs started to blend together to me and I didn’t feel excited by any of them.

Prefiero a The Smiths. Me gustan las canciones lentas de este LP

Well blow me down. 711 albums in and it’s the first time I’ve had consecutive albums by the same artist. Even more poignant is that the words I wrote yesterday are so very apt to the album I was served up today. Makes you think that what you write is being analysed! Better be careful out there. Anyway to prove the point I copy and paste below yesterday’s review. Standard Morrisey fayre. Lost count now of how many Morrisey albums I’ve reviewed now but overall there is very little to set them apart from each other. I now have come conclusion that you really only need one Morrisey album in your collection to know what he’s about. 3/5 12/12/25⭐ 3/5 13/12/

-1 morrisey

Damn, this thing came out swinging with the first track "You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side", really loved the energy from the whole band. Safe to say my enthusiasm for the aggressive British nature of Morrissey's singing had waned considerably by the time I reached the back half, but overall I'd consider this a solid addition to this list. There's a nice level of grit throughout.

Listened at 4am with Wesley stirring. Not so bad. Dated. Kind of odd to my ears. Wish I liked it more knowing what he is to Noel. Smiths have yet to land for me.

Not that bad for being morrisey. Less whiney than usual.

The second Morrissey album within one week. I'm fully convinced other artists and albums deserve it much more to be on this list instead!!!!!!!! Besides this fact it is an almost pleasant listen without a single song to really stand out. btw: I prefer the David Bowie version of "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday". Weak three stars. 2,5

Definitely stronger rock sound overall--the music is quite good although some of it sounds like it was borrowed. The failure is that Morrissey sounds like, well, Morrissey. He is not able to take on a persona that really distinguishes this. Good but not different enough or convincingly so.

Better than the last Morrissey album I had to review, that's for sure...!

Not terrible but seriously can be done with random Morrissey albums!!!

Rather uninteresting - a lot of it was just a bit of a roar with vocals to me.

I've heard some of these melodies before, but didn't know they were Morrissey. Pretty good stuff, and probably wouldve been better if I were to have listened to it in the 80s. Id give it a 3.5 if I could.

At the time I would have bet the farm that Johnny Marr would have won the post Smiths war. Boy was I wrong. This album showed the world that Morrissey not only didn't need Marr but that had moved on so thoroughly he found someone (actually two someones) that created something altogether different and it added new layers. The two guitar attack is a different animal. And the Mick Ronson production - the chefs kiss. This album kicks. 3.976426 stars (I just can't quite give this the same rating as Hard Days Night from a few days ago. If that album was a few weeks ago I'm going 4)

Favorite track Seasock, yet still docked other picks: Glamorous glue, we hate it, tomorrow

Starts out with a bang, bang. First 2 songs are great. Then settles in to mediocre.

Pretty good. Wont listen to again on purpose but did enjoy it.

I mean, it’s Morrissey, so I don’t like it much. I actually liked the music quite a bit but the lyrics and his voice are not my thing.

Classic voice and some really solid songs on this album. Nothing I have listened to a lot before but I really enjoyed it.

Quite interesting.

Got into a few songs and came to terms with the odd glam rock influence on the first few songs

You’re an asshole, Morrissey. This is a perfect example where the behavior of the artist creates a bias that influences how a listener will perceive a piece of art produced by that person. While we have a variety of unconscious biases that influence our opinions and beliefs about a number of things, Morrissey as a human being is a vile bigoted pile of shit. Those people who enjoy Morrissey’s solo work are the same types of fucking idiots who voted for Donald Trump even though they knew he was a lying corrupt pathologically stupid self interested piece of shit unfit to to be in contact with other humans let alone govern. The mindless morons who voted for Trump also like Morrissey. So, what about this record? Mick Ronson is a genius. A mix of rockabilly and obvious David Bowie/T.Rex cloning the record is a good spin starting with the obvious You’re Gonna Need Someone On Your Side. This track has a lift from Havana 3 a.m. which gad come out a year earlier and Reach The Rock was a minor hit. Morrissey’s vocals are among the best he has ever recorded with the Definitive Master mix keeping them right up front. Under Ronson’s guidance, Morrissey’s worst habits are mostly eliminated and the end result is a fairly good rock record. There are some skips, such as the snoozer We’ll Let You Know, but it’s mostly enjoyable and accessible. So, without factoring in my bias, this is a solid 3. It’s average. No songs that have stickiness but if it came on the radio or you were going to play the LP, you’d give it a listen. The question for me is will you flip the record to side 2? For a 3, I’ll still give it a flip. For Morrissey? I’d rather take a 💩.

Easy enough to enjoy whilst being unremarkable. I don’t know enough about the Smith’s to gauge how this compares (I’ve only heard The Queen is Dead), but it felt a bit session musician-y. 3.5 rounded….umm…..down (because it sounded like he was moaning a lot)

Residual

Of all the morrissey albums, including ones with the smiths, this is by far the least interesting. I think its good, its fine, but its just something that doesnt need to be by morrisey, it could be by anyone Fine but very very unremarkable

Best Morrissey album I've heard.

After some time away, I'm back! This album started off strong. I really like the simple acoustic guitar ballads. Though, by the end, the songs started to get a little too self-indulgent. Fav song: We'll Let You Know

Pretty good for Moz

Morrissey is fucking insufferable, but I can't deny he made some good music.

Familiar voice from The Smiths but the music is fairly different. Decent.

It's too bad someone with such a beautiful voice has such ugly opinions.

Fourth and final Morrissey record I got. This is his most rock 'n roll album. No really bad songs, but also not very memorable. I think 1 of his solo records in the book would have been enough. Favorite song: You're gonna need someone on your side.

Mycket stark trea, men inte lika bra som Smiths helt enkelt

Överlag lagom bra o välgjort, och även om jag gillar ett par låtar starkt så är inte helheten riktigt där för mig.

Just another fairly average album. 3 stars or C.

Too bad he walked into the spinning propellers of an aircraft right after recording this album. It's fine, but I'll never reach for solo Morrissey if The Smiths are available.

It’s a shame he fell headfirst into a thresher immediately after this album was released.

Random thoughts: * I listened to this album 3 times through. I enjoyed it but don’t have a lot to say about it. * one song kind of had a Death Cab for Cutie vibe to it. I can definitely see some indie stuff as a continuation of this music. * The National - is it about a disco club and English nationalism? * I liked We Hate it When Our Friends Become Successful. This one had the Death Cab vibes with the ha, ha, ha section. * this was alright

Light 3

A-class seasonal-fit B-class songwriting C-class lyrics D-class human being Hence, I could give anything between 1 and 4 ⭐️ I‘m letting chance decide here:

Like all Morrissey albums, this sounds like The Smiths lite, for better and for worse.

Pretty Good!

Morrissey always delivers good album but continuation of good music nothing was better or worse than previoslusband subsequent albums

It was alright. Songs ranged from slow to fast. Mostly just background noise while I worked.

I didn't hate it.

He is a brilliant lyricist but this album fell flat for me - the juxtaposition of the roadhouse and his voice was not harmonious. Didn't feel anything through the middle, last three songs were good. Particularly i know it's gonna happen someday.

It was alright, some songs are repetitive and I feel like beats are re-used in each song

Before this list I've always thought anything Morrissey touches is pure shite but after two Smiths albums and this I think it's just a bit average. That opening song was really good though

Not bad- I dont co sider myself a Morrissey fan but it was enjoyable enough. You're the one for me Fatty has a special place in my heart.

This album unsurprisingly comes across as a mediocre facsimile of The Smiths, who despite Morrissey being a knob are a great band. The Smiths made such an impact that I now don't need to listen to Morrissey to get more Smiths because there are bands who are good facsimiles of them, like Another Sunny Day and particularly, Northern Portrait, a Scandinavian band who sing Smiths songs about Volvos.

A mimo to trochę brakuje mi hit quality w tych utworach (które mimo wszystko było obecne w "...Quarry") - może poza "You're the One for Me, Fatty", które naprawdę buja. Stąd też chyba bez czwórki, ale bardzo mocnym 3,5.

Fun and kinda forgettable. It thretened with something good but never delivered on this promise. Very frustrating album if you expect something more and rather medicore if you don't have any expectations.

This is alright, I suppose. It’s not a patch on anything The Smiths did, but it’s ok. The bloke is still a rampaging knobhead, though.

Pretty ok I guess. 3.7

sounded ok

fine album - good background noise more than anything

First time listening to solo Moz. Not bad but not quite up to the level of The Smiths.

Off the cuff remark: was this the beginning of the descent to being an arse? Hard not to feel some of the music is lacking in panache. Almost feels like a not great Smiths covers band. Even this Morrissey has some dabbling in controversy and some nice lyrical twists but it's, lacklustre. Standout track: Glamorous Glue Revisit?: no great rush to to hear this again.

7/10 I really liked this album. Fav songs: certain people I know, we hate when.., Great sound and amazing voice. Just did not have that one or two hits needed to elevate the album.

Not much to say here, you have to put up with Morrissey if you plan to listen to all 1001+ albums here. Some points for embracing more of a grittier rock sound and diversifying things here. Not as mopey as his other solo albums as a result.

Meh. The songs were fine and it was worth a listen but not that interesting or inspiring.

Sounds great as usual (apart from the two opening tracks), but Your Arsenal never touches my heart. His insufferable side takes up too much time here. I prefer Viva Hate and Vauxhall & I

This rocks. I grabbed a bunch of this for the ol' playlist. Never heard the Smiths, never heard of Morrissey. It's very British, very rockin'. "You're the One for Me, Fatty" has been stuck in my head all day. Seems like he has some complicated political views but I'm not terribly interested in incorporating anything about Morrissey into my life beyond, "You're the One for Me, Fatty." I'll ask mom what she thinks about him lol.

Disappointing really - I love Moz and The Smiths but this album was just a bit lazy

Hey what if we took the Smiths, made them happier, and replaced the best member of the band with a generic rock guitarist? Not awful, but not great either. Just sorta generic rock without the punch of good lyrics. Plus Morrissey is a twat

For me this is clearly his best solo album. I'm not much of a fan of The Smiths (except for that one song used as a TV theme anthem on a particular U.S. show) or his other solo albums; nor do I believe most of outrageous schtick he would say to keep the album's name in the press constantly for publicity reasons, but I do respect his ability to wind people up. That said, this album does a fine job of keeping songs tight and to the point. The production by Tony Visconti is on point. Hell, even David Bowie enjoyed this album. How can I argue with that? I've learned over the years that I can enjoy a great many things without being in lockstep with every little thing someone utters.

Hierdoor komen die bij mn FAVO, waaronder de twijfelachtige benoemde You're the one for me, Fatty Wel gewoon een lekker nummer... Mwah, het album begint best wel lekker maar kakt harder in dan ik na de lunch. Jammer, maar uiteindelijk is dit album niet veel meer dan prima. FAVO: Glamorous Glue, You're the one for me Fatty

Better than the smiths

Eh, has a good band, they make good music. But overall did not really take to the singing. He's got some chords though.

i felt pretty indifferent about this album to be honest. i've never been suuuuper into the smiths never mind morrissey. i was enjoying his moody vocal technique at first but by the time i was half way through the album i got pretty sick of it. there's some decent tracks in there, just nothing i'll be rushing back to listen to.

A bit better than the other one, but still a 3

Mweh... Not great, not bad. Singer has a great voice, and the guitar is also very good. Its just not exciting to me, guess i'm not a glam rock fan

Morrissey/Smiths albums are generally excellent regarding production, composition, and creative content. The problem though, is that Morrissey is a fucking wanker and taints everything he touches. Minus points for being a wanker.

This is Morrissey? the douchey-ist douche whoever douched. THAT Morrissey. Well he shows it in the We Don't Like Our Friends... song. Other than that he's just kinda medicore. The rock music is fine. The love ballads are a bit much but fine. He seems like a sad petty little man based upon reputation for just meh music.

Wouldn't be a top pick, but I am pleasantly surprised by this 3/4

Not sure if this guys was always a solo artist for some reason I thought he was part of the smiths. Not nearly as depressing as I thought it would be, but yes not the most positive record I’ve ever heard. We hate when our friends are successful, jeez. Very British, and I can actually see why he was popular. Some catchy stuff.

Better than I thought

some great songs, but album only ok

I've never listened to Morrisey. I'm enjoying the song "Glamorous Glue". I like the line 'We look to Los Angeles for the language we use - London is dead'. "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful" is a very honest song. It's also possible he's talking about someone else hating him. It's funny though. 'And if they're Northern...' I feel generally positive about this album. It had an interesting sound and I liked most of the songs. I didn't love any of it, but I enjoyed it. I don't really love Morrisey's voice. 6/10

This album is fine, there's nothing really wrong with it. Somehow I still couldn't get into it.

Overall good album! Never listened to any of this before. Seems like a bit of a mix of genres but overall enjoyable listen.

I like the music more than I like Morrissey's persona and vocal stylings.

bowie esque, ahem glamorous glue, but it was OK. Largely chill and nothing spectacular

Didn’t expect much of this because I didn’t care for the other Morrissey album, but this one was better. Kind of like his other album, mixed with David Bowie, mixed with 90’s soft rock.

Not as bad as I expected. More upbeat and not so mopey sad face. Still, not my favorite style.

Nice sold rock sound. Definitely enjoyable, but not super memorable.

Alright as far as pop rock goes. Not as well-crafted or interesting as the music of the Smiths, obviously. The songwriting isn't very varied or strong here. His personality is sometimes entertaining. (I did involuntarily chuckle at the "Fatty" song)

this would be good if morrissey wasn’t such a 🍆

what's exactly your problem mate

Fine, but I find Morrissey's vocal delivery is often sleepy and lacking in variation.

Descubro la carrera en solitario del cantante de The Smiths. Disco genial.

Had more energy behind it than I was expecting. It was alright. Nothing such with me

If I heard any of the songs in isolation I'd probably think that they were quite decent, but as a whole package it doesn't do much for me. Songs blend together a little bit and generally don't ever Wow me

NOT AGAIN. Its pretty much copy and paste from the last one, obviously good singer but leagues and leagues below the Smiths albums, which I love. Also the racist bullshit is creeping in here as well, so will take off points for that. It just feels lacking in all substance - 'the Smiths but every other member has the musical creativity of a plank of wood' . Not much else to say. Favourite songs: We'll let you know, certain people I know. Overall around 5/10

Terrible dude. Pretty decent tunes.

A decent album, good listen, enjoyable but felt pretty standard, nothing too stand out.

Morrissey always makes good music but nothing that really sticks with me

The guy in these global reviews that called Morrisey a British Neil Young is more clever than I'll ever be. It is just as perplexing that I can tolerate Morriseys artistry and voice with more ease than Neil Youngs. After a pretty fantastic opener, track 3 "We'll Let You Know" is a very pretty, melancholy little song. The downtrodden acoustic guitar with the snare roll coming in halafway through the song and those echoey guitar (?) sounds all make for a really good listening experience. Reminds me of a more downtrodden version of Alex Turners “Hiding Tonight”. Worse yet, the instrumentation on this is really well done. The rhythym guitar tones on "The National Front Disco" are so pleasant. The easy, square-dance beat on "Certain People I Know" is really simplistically fun. "I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday" is a total snoozer, most of the back half of this record is. I hear so much of Jesse Lacey/Brand New taking inspiration from Morrisey, which makes sense on multiple levels. Excellent artistry wrapped up in a nasty guy 3/5

Well its mr Smiths man. I clocked it immediately. Dude has a very distinct vocal style. I had a good time with this though id probably rather listen to the smiths instead. Nothing too crazy. Just a solid new wavey alt kinda thing that does the job. Saves a few tracks for later but an ok record

The music is okay, I hear he is a cunt but I don't really know his personal stuff. 3/5

I like some Morrissey albums but this didn't do it for me. Dynamic, cool, different, just lacking a spark.

Liked most of the tracks, but it confirms my opinion that I like Morrissey as much as the Smiths, so if one part is missing it doesn't sound as right

Once again can’t really complain about this. I like the sound of his voice and the music is good enough.

This was better than expected. 3.5

3.75 Solid and enjoyable for brooding.

I don't hate it, its actually not bad. But there is something about his voice and what he alludes while he is singing that makes me feel like he is a bit much and too full of himself. Like Certain People I Know or We Hate it When our Friends Become Successful....I liked the tunes, they were catchy and a little ironic with the lyrics. But then his voice just feels a little uppity and high and mighty. The way he sings Your the One for me, Fatty kind of makes me want to punch him in the face and Seasick is just sooooo dramatic. I think I would have rated a little higher if it weren't for the little edge of snarkiness he seems to have.

please spare me morrissey

Not as offensively 80s as I expected. Squeaks into a 3

Best Morrissey but insanely over represented on this list

Chilled out British cage rock. Ok

Alright

All the songs sound so melancholic. Not really my thing

Weet ik jiet meer

'Certain People I know' is jaunty enough but the main riff rips off 'Ride a White Swan'. Overall this is ok but that's all. Mick Ronson's input can be heard in the guitar sound which is a bit glam, a bit indie. Overall it falls short of his best solo stuff and is miles away from The Smiths at their best.

Some good tracks here. Reminded me of other early 90s bands like Suede and The Stone Roses. Overall not quite as compelling as the earlier Smiths work though. There’s a big Johnny Marr shaped hole.

A quintessential Morrissey album, not truly ground breaking for him.

A less moodier Smiths.

Yesterday, I reviewed my final Stevie Wonder album, and I'll review my final Morrissey album. I guess that's what happens when you're 830-something albums into this list. I've given the other three Morrissey albums on this list five stars (there's just always something missing from them), but based on what I'm reading about Your Arsenal, I'm thinking this might be the Morrissey solo album that finally gets five stars from me. With no more Smiths albums to review either, this will be my last album from the Mope from Manchester. Sadly, Morrissey is going out with a bit of a meh from me. Your Arsenal was fine, but I thought it was the weakest solo entry from Morrissey that I've reviewed. The fuzzed out guitars on "You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side" and "Glamorous Glue" really caught me off guard; I wasn't expecting a heavier rock sound from Morrissey, but it was a good preview for the mix of styles that would be present on this album. I wasn't blown away by those first two songs, but I thought they were interesting. However, I thought "We'll Let You Know" was pretty lackluster. The songwriting was good, but the sound felt flat and uninspired to me. I know that "The National Front Disco" created quite a stir when it came out, but I love the guitars in it, and the drumming gives it a really fun beat. Personally, I think Morrissey was taking the piss out of the National Front with this song, but I can understand that other people might not share that opinion. I personally don't understand why Morrissey won't be straightforward and condemn racism when pressed on the issue, but I think his arrogance just makes him act like he's too good to answer the question. Whatever, I digress. I also loved "We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful". The pop rock sounds work well here, and I think Morrissey is at his best when he's working with great melodies. "You're the One for Me, Fatty" sounded great, but the lyrics were a little off-putting to me, even if there was a good message about body positivity behind it. The closing track, "Tomorrow" was also really strong. I really enjoyed the bass and lead guitar on it, and the drums were really good too. It's the kind of sound I love from Morrissey. Overall though, I think the mix of sounds didn't suit Morrissey very well. His lyrics always have a bit of snark and cheek to them, and even though the songwriting was really good, the music didn't serve his style very well on a lot of this album. This album wasn't great to me, but I applaud Morrissey's willingness to branch out on this effort.

Never really listened to Morrissey before. I liked this album, especially the first song, more than The Smiths.

Fav songs: You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side; Seasick, yet Still Docked This is so much more fun than The Smiths. I think it might be the more traditional rock orientation of this album. I'm partial to rockabilly so the opener really grabbed me. I think his vocals are a bit buried on some of the earlier songs. Overall pretty good album.

Decent guitar and stuff but I just don’t like the sound of morriseys voice and his lyrics aren’t much to write home about. Didn’t hate it as much as I thought I would though. Specific rating - 3.0 Fav song- you’re gonna need someone on your side Least fav- you’re the one for me fatty

listened whilst making lasagna! Enjoyable experience.

I quite like his voice, the songs I did like I really liked and even most of the songs that I wouldn't listen to again had bits that I loved. But some questionable lyrics and any mention of England/Britain/London instantly reminded me how much he sucks. Think it's too hard to separate the art from the artist when the art keeps reminding you of the artists shitty views... Favourite: Certain People I Know Least: You're the One for Me, Fatty

First experience with anything morrissey (including smiths) and found this quite good. Only thing holding it back from a 4 is that it’s not the typical music I’d revisit often. Chat gpt said this and I thought it was put well Your Arsenal is Morrissey at a crossroad — glam yet introspective, political yet personal, funny yet mournful. It blends bitterness, bravado, and vulnerability better than almost any of his other solo work

I believe this is the third Morrissey album on the list. I guess that's fine, and I really enjoyed this album. The man can write a song. My problem is, as always, there are just far too many important albums out there to squeeze in three Morrissey albums. And this was not a must-listen, even if it was enjoyable.

begint sterk maar wordt soft en erg amerikaans

The ever controversial Morrissey. Personally, this is a little too light for my liking. A grand majority of the songs here are both skippable and forgettable. This one isn’t really going to stick with me after today. I understand and appreciate what he is doing here. His voice is beautiful and clearly the entire band is very talented, but the only song that truly ROCKS on this album is the opener, “You’re Gonna Need Someone on Your Side.” Alternatively, “You’re the One for Me, Fatty” is an instant skip. That song is just annoying and repetitive. Everything else isn’t entirely memorable, or is too light and repetitive to play on an immediate repeat. Again, none of the songs except for Fatty are bad, and they’re all very pretty and well written. They’re just not really my thing is all, but as a whole, this is a very passable little 39 minute album. 3.5/5.

Who listens to this? I mean, what’s the appropriate setting for music like this? Dinner? Dancing? Chill? I guess I just don’t get it.

idk whatever

Diminishing returns with this guy. Less is Morrissey. This one is a little different though. More rock n’ roll.

morrissey is problematic ik but his music… 3,5/5

Was aware of Morrissey but never actually listened to anything from him. I think he was bigger in England. Ok though. It's a vibe.

Lighter on the alternative, heavier on the rock. Always great lyrics.

To think there are not only one, nor two, nor three, but FOUR solo albums from this insufferable dingus on this list, not mention all of the Smiths albums as well, really goes to show how much some men just want to suck this man’s ding dong. As for the music though. I feel as though this might be one of the better of his I’ll have to experience. 1/4 done.

why was this a good album.

Pas nul, mais -1 parce que Morissey est un gros con.

Kind of all over the place, middling.

My all time favorite Morrissey album. 3 stars

Better than expected

Pretty raw at times, which I enjoyed. I think I liked it more than Viva Hate. 3.75/4.

I like it better than Viva Hate, but Morrissey just has never really done it for me.

His voice is amazing, I enjoyed Glamorous Glue and We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful

Meh just kinda blends with the others

Pretty good but not viva hate

Racist. But good music. 3/5

As the first couple of tracks played in my ears, I started to think this would be a four or even five-star album. But from the third track onward it descended into mediocrity, so I'll give it a high three (or I would if that was possible).

You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side // We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful // I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday // 3.5/5

In Ordnung. Irgendwie weniger deprimierend als mit Band.

Pretty good

I’m glad we’re apparently nearly done with Morrissey, even though his music can be catchy, he’s a horrible person. This, I think is the best non-Smiths thing on the list, but he’s still trash so 3 stars.

Our last Morrisey for this project. Great to get it over with less than half way though, but upsetting that they made use listen to this nob with such frequency up until now. This was actually pretty good. A begrudging 3, but he’s still a huge douche.

Not really interesting to me. The instrumentation was pretty good however, I just didn’t quite like the album myself personally probably a solid 5/10.

One of his better albums

Хорошо, но звучание вообще не запоминается, прослушал ис разу выветрилось из головы

sad british 80s punk rock, couldve been the sound track to sky high

Nice to hear

It wanders to many different places, some enjoyable, some not so much.

acho que estou acostumada com o desempenho de morrisey nos smiths e esse disco ficou um pouco abaixo do que eu esperava

Damn thay smith singer got low-key better in the 90’s. Cool stuff throughout it, with nice vibes

As someone who is NOT a fan of Morrissey in the Smiths, and he ruins the band in my opinion, I appreciate his more mature take on this album.

Passt schon

Morrissey is insufferable, but the album is fine.

3 Morrissey albums in 3 months is just too much man ToT I think this was my favorite of the three though (but only a small margin separating them)

It's good if you like Morrissey

There were some fucking awesome songs on here wow. Production sucked tho but morrissey’s songwriting does not

Pretty good stuff! Not sure I can give this a 4 but it’s a 3.5 for me. Some great tunes, definitely stronger than meat is murder which I just listened to before this.

enjoyable sonically even if some of the lyrics are cringe. 3.5 stars

Some good songs on here, but it's not up to the level of the Smiths' best albums. You can tell from the lyrics that he was already starting to become insufferable, but they were probably considered funny or tongue in cheek at the time. It's hard to judge a song like the National Front Disco now, for example. At the time, it was probably intended as a critique, but Morrissey's views seem to be lining up with the conservatives and UKIP a lot these days, so it's hard to know what he meant at the time. I was all set to point out how derivative some of the guitar riff are of Bowie's glam days, but then I saw who the guitarist was!

Enjoyed this more than I expected

Not bad for Morrisey, less depresso more espresso

Decent album. Pretty classic Morrissey sound. I enjoyed it. You're the one for me fatty lol. Seasick yet still docked was a highlight

Had this on cd, but rarely got around to listening to it. Vauxhall and I always had my vote as best Moz album. On a relisten, there was nothing too wrong with it. Singles were a little too 'fun' lyrically, I Know It's Going To Happen is lovely and who knows whether National Front Disco is tongue in cheek on not?

Pretty good, better than some of his other stuff on the list.

Little 80s for me - easy listening but didn't grab my attention

Délivrez-nous de Morrissey. Je le trouve tellement méprisant. Sa voix affectée me tombe sur les nerfs. Au fil du palmarès, j'ai déjà écouté plusieurs de ses albums et ceux des Smiths, je n'en peux plus.

Pretty good. I think it starts out great and then flags a little towards the middle. There are some questionable songs on here, like You're the one for me, Fatty, but overall a solid 3.5

I think one Morrissey album is enough. They all sound the same.

Yes, the man is an arse but this glam-lite album has some banging tunes on it, and some of his best lyrics - ignore the man's hatefulness if possible and you've got one solid album, if you can't however, that's completely understandable. Best Tracks: You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side; We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful; You're The One For Me, Fatty

This man is not well-liked. lol I'm setting aside the kind of person he is, and rate solely the album. It gets a 3 stars. There were a few songs that I was tuning out, and the ones that I did enjoy felt average to me.

More of a knife to a gun fight

Typical Morrisey. I don’t see where he broke any new ground with this album. That said, it’s a good album.

I really don’t like the sound of this album. It’s a little muddy and hard to hear anything that is going on. There are a few songs where I can’t tell if he’s being ironic or just a huge jerk. Probably would have been more obvious in the context of the time and knowing more about him. A couple songs are nice. This might grow on me with a couple more listens, but I likely won’t do that.

I'll state first, I don't like Morrissey in general, him or his music and I don't consider the Smiths as great as everyone thinks. With that being said, Your Arsenal is a surprisingly strong album. It's upbeat, at times and several of the tracks "rock out" harder than his previous band and some of the songs are downright beautiful. I didn't feel the urge to turn it off because I was bored like some of The Smiths music and though I'm not a convert, Morrisey delivered a record that I don't feel too guilty about enjoying.

really didn't want my ears to perceive this racist prick's solo music, but i felt skipping his albums out of spite would defeat the purpose of using this album generator You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side - 3/5 Glamorous Glue - 4/5 We'll Let You Know - 3/5 The National Front - 3/5 Certain People I Know - 4/5 We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful - 4/5 You're the One for Me, Fatty - 2/5 Seasick, Yet Still Docked - 2/5 I Know It's Gonna Happen Someday - 2/5 Tomorrow - 3/5 Average score: 3/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️ i hate how decent this was one morrissey album down, three more to go...

Fun for one or two songs, but then it becomes the same over and over.

Sounds like every other Morrissey album.

It’s not always easy separating the artist from the art and Morrissey is a massive twat. His songs are the equivalent of that moaning old man in the pub who you can avoid

I was *really* hoping that this would be at long last the final infliction of Morrissey from this collection, but sadly it appears there's still one more Morrissey album and one more Smiths album in store. So incredibly tedious. But at least this album has a bit more edge to it in some tracks than in many of the other albums, and a number of recognizable hits. The videos don't do much to add to the listening effect--why do all the band members look like robots in "Glamorous glue", for example?--but I'm not really surprised by that. At some point (hopefully soon) I'll get the last of these interminable Morrissey-based albums. As the man says, I know it's gonna happen someday.

Hmm... There are plenty of songs I enjoy by Morrissey and The Smiths, but I found this particular album somewhat lacking for a reason that I can't quite articulate. I gave it a second and third playthrough hoping that something would click, but I'm not sure that it did. I will say that, like most Morrissey-related works, subsequent listenings did reveal additional layers, so I think there's probably something here if you're willing to work for it - I just ran out of time in the day. So, I guess I'll give it a neutral rating. I'd probably have given it a lower score if not for the recent slew of painfully unlistenable garbage, which I certainly wouldn't lump this into. It's not bad - it's just not the best he has to offer.

I didn’t hate it as much as the last album. I find that I do actually like his style and sound it’s just certain lyrics rub me the wrong way. There were far less lyrics this time around that I notably hated, though there were still some. He’s still pretentious and the only person in the world who matters according to him but it’s 12 years in the past from “You are the Quarry” and so I think he just grows more insufferable as he ages. This wasn’t bad, especially given how annoying I found him last time. I do get the appeal and I think I’m going to only listen to his old stuff if I ever do.

Meh, it's Morrissey. Not great, not bad.

We'll Let You Know is a bit of a drag, and has vaguely racist overtones. National Front Disco is a better tune, but again, worrying lyrics ("England for the English"). Musically this was fine, though I liked it less than "You Are The Quarry". Can't in all conscience give this more than three .

Morrissey, you charming bastard. Even without Johnny Marr's jangly, masterfully woven guitar lines, even when singing dumb lines like 'you're the one for me, fatty' and 'We're the last British people you will ever know', you're just so very damn charming. Not all the tracks are of equal quality, but time and time again Morrissey and his musing voice are a joy to listen to.

Not his best is it? Can’t really add much to this review.

I get it now.

Nothing to love, nothing to hate except Morrissey

Listened to this yesterday and forgot to rate it... I have already forgotten the album. I think it was fine, nothing memorable, not bad.

Not too bad. Good energy and I can see why people would give it 4 or 5 stars

I suppose Morrissey’s solo career is what the Smiths would’ve been without a unique guitarist. Or bassist. Or drummer. It’s just the unique vocals that take centre stage here. That weird British whimsical ditty ten times over. I don’t particularly play much attention to the lyrics with this album, but it’s hard to ignore such insanity as The National Front Disco and You’re the One for Me, Fatty. Yes, we hate it when our jangle pop friends become bigoted wankers, but we can tolerate their albums, I suppose. There’s just something huge missing here, and that something is most certainly Johnny Marr’s guitar. Without it, it’s just some bloke rambling about John Major’s domestic policy, or deindustrialisation in the Greater Manchester area, or something. It’s best to just listen and move on, I think.

Musically great album. Enjoyed the guitar riffs, and arrangements. Morrissey’s voice and tone aren’t my favorite. But overall pretty good listen.

I think every Morrissey album is going to inevitably vary somewhere between a 2 or a 3. Too bad this site doesn't do half stars. The music itself is good and I can take or leave the vocal stylings of Mr. Morrissey depending on the song. Low 3 for this album.

Not too bad so far, good instrumentals. It was okay, nothing life changing.

Thought it’d be worse without Johnny Marr’s guitar work (from The Smiths), but the guitar work here was fine, as was the rest of it. Nothing special, though.

No nyt on sitä vähän rokimpaa Morriseyta. Keskiverto hyvää, hyvä kuunneltava. Parhaat: You're The One For Me Fatty, Tomorrow

He's got a good voice and the music wasn't bad. I'd probably give this another spin or two, but that's probably it. 3/5

Imagine my disappointment waking to yet another goddamned Morrissey album. I don't know why, I just don't give a fuck about Morrissey or anything that he does, even though I do have a soft spot for How Soon is Now. Not bad out of the gate on You're Gonna Need Someone on Your Side. Built on a 50s/60s surf-rock guitar riff, it doesn't really go anywhere, but is fine enough. We'll Let You Know is an early album standout with solid production elements. Melancholy acoustic ballad that gives way to some interesting intermixed crowd noise and reverberation. Finishes far from where it started with deep throated bass thumping forward to the conclusion. Similarly, The National Front Disco is a pretty successful and engaging punk-pop jam. Certain People I Know takes an unexpected left turn into rockabilly territory. Not bad, but also not great. We Hate it... is pretty meh. The whole thing sounds pastiche and flat. You're the One for Me, Fatty, while a funny concept unto itself is actually a solid song. I enjoyed this more than I expected, but still doesn't leave a huge impression. Somewhere solidly in the 3 territory. Better than the others this list has thrown at us.

Another Morrissey 3. Kinda poppy, kinda rocky. That's about it.

I think that this review is pretty similar to the other Morrissey reviews, pretty good instrumentals with an ok singer. The National Front Disco and Tomorrow were really fun songs.

Sick another damn Morrissey album. I don't mind as much for the Smiths but Morrissey pisses me off. This one was actually better than the other two I remember we had. Really hated that country ass sounding song though. Still not great pretty run of the road.

A bit samey when compared with other Smiths or solo albums. I think he's missing Mr Marr.......

Goes down easy. We get it, you’re British

I’m so excited to never listen to Morrissey voluntarily again.

We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful - він мені прямо дуже сподобався і піде в "улюблені" окремо від альбому.

Wokal jest, nuta jest, drygu nie ma. A brzmi jakby się trudziła osoba grająca. Muzykę tworząca w zespole.

It was pretty good. No bucket voice this time, while the instrumentals are as good as they were. Nice overall vibe

OK, I guess. If you like The Smiths. 7/10

Thought this was a respectable album; not bad, but not making me listen stuff on repeat. 7/10

Of all the Morrissey albums, this is the least annoying.

Very poppy, very feminine and the lyrics are kinda boring and bland. Girl music

I think there's too much of a disconnect with the music and the lyrics, at least on a first listen. It's not unbearable compared to a lot of the self indulgent shite on here.

Yep. That's Morrissey alright.

Lyrically witty with over-the-top orchestrations? Must be Morrissey!

Last week's stretch of Waits, Cohen, van Morrison really put me on the tilt, I mean talk about a suckfest. Then I get fed another Morrissey solo effort. I think the Smiths are pretty mid and I despose solo records, but if I HAD to listen to a Morrissey album this would be it, kinda rocks

Not bad

Just how many Morrissey records are on this fucking list? Two days ago I was presented with his 4th: “you are the quarry”, and not impressed. I do love the Smiths, and always find the occasional gem among Morrisey solo records. But his solo work is uneven, and besides, no one deserves to have their entire catalog on this list.

6/10 - Some parts were more interesting than others. His voice is pretty good but none of the songs stood out.

It's better than I thought it would be, and had more sonic variety than I expected, which was nice, and several tracks were pretty good, but Morrissey's solo work proves that The Smiths were more than the sum of their parts.

He's great and all but I like certain songs. Can't stomach hole albums of narcissism and depression.

I like Morrissey's voice. It always takes me back to the first time I heard him on a mixed tape that Robs older brother made. He had great taste of music. It's where I first heard Milla too. I don't know how he got ahold of his music back then but it was magical. 3 stars here though.

Yeah it was standard Morrissey. This boomer really loved mid Morrissey

Not quite the Smiths

Middling indie rock and Brexit adjacent lyrics - Morrissey’s solo stuff is the most over represented stuff on this list It’s never awful but it’s never anything great either Crucially it’s never anything as good as The Smiths

Liking this way better than the Smiths so far. OK maybe I just liked the first song. Some parts I really enjoyed but overall it was just fine.

Only Morrissey solo record that doesn't sound like slowly dying of starvation in the Congo Rainforest, mostly thanks to Mick Ronson's production. Lyrics are what you'd expect. Some really good songs, mostly insanely forgettable - yup, it's a Morrissey solo record.

It is a solid album. Not super special, but good from front to back.

Mmm... I did not expect to like this at all. Colour me surprised but there were few songs on here I enjoyed. There was nothing "awful" either. Enough for a 3/5.

This started pretty well, quite liked the first 2 tracks (especially the heavy surf rock kind of sound on the first) but it kind of trailed off and I wasn't as interested. Picked up again a bit on the last couple of tracks. I could be making it up but I feel like I've heard the exact vocal melody of We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful on a Smiths song. Not a Smiths expert though so maybe I've actually heard that same song before Hearing "England for the English" on National Front Disco is also a bit uncomfortable with the sort of stuff Morrissey has been saying in recent years Maybe more like a 3.5 Highlights: You're Gonna Need Someone On Your Side, Tomorrow, Glamorous Glue

Another Morrissey album. I feel like they all sound the same. I'm not a fan. Although, I found this to be tolerable.

eigentlich gut aber 3 weil lyrics u. weil morrissey

It’s Morrissey, innit

An inferior sequel to the Smiths, but still worth a listen

Separating the art from the artist is an important skill. I actually enjoy a lot of Morrissey's music, especially his solo stuff. But my god, is he an insufferable prick.

I really loved when he said he would be the last British person I would ever truly know. Got me really excited about the rest of my life.

The 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die provides a great case for the existence of Stockholm Syndrome with your captor being Morrissey. I listened to my first Morrissey album almost a year ago and thought to myself “this is pretty alright, but I have no desire to listen to more”. Now, this being my fourth solo album from him with two The Smiths albums in the mix as well I find myself really liking what I’m hearing and wanting to listen to more of this bloke. Favorite songs were We’ll Let You Know, Certain People I Know, We Hate It When Our Friends Become Successful, and I Know It’s Gonna Happen Someday.

Fine album, sounds like some nice 90s college rock. I liked a bunch of tracks on here, especially the first and last track. Lots of solid hooks and riffs here, prefer it over the other Morrissey album I had.

This kind of sounds like what you do after you make a hit album, and then you think that no matter what you sing or how well you play, it's going to be loved. But turns out that these songs are just nowhere near as captivating as the first albums hits were. This is still listenable but it's not fantastic. 2 stars
