Reviews (page 5 of 7)
It started off with a high note and I thought "oh this is something interesting" but kinda limps along after that. Again another album where I damn it with faint praise. It's completely normal and nothing special.
Interesting mix of psychedelic and folk. Love the harmonies as well.
6.5/10 Liked this, but a strange one. No way it is in the top 1000 albums, but it is so different to other stuff that I can see why it is in 1000 albums to listen to Tonight they were indie rock. Anything but: rock, folk, gypsy, blues amongst others At its best when they are giving it 100% in vocals and throwing all the instruments at it Best: Dreaming of you
They incorporate a lot of stylistic influences, and while different, it isn't necessarily unique or great as a whole, despite the creativity and approach. Feels like the kind of band who's music would be interesting in the background of a comedy show but not enough to make you look it up later.
The definition of a 5/10
Thought it was pretty mediocre. I was hoping for another gem like the Zutons album but came up meh for me. Rating: 2.8
The thing about this album is that some songs are better than a lot of others on this list and some absolutely suck. For example, I enjoyed the second song, but the last song was just annoying. At least I didn’t have to listen to the hidden track that’s not on Spotify (I wouldn’t have anyway).
There is nothing specifically bad about this for me, but it kind of just passed me by. I can kind of appreciate the reflection of 60s rock that I tend to enjoy, but this one just didn't quite hit it for me.
950 albums down and the kids are getting restless. Are we there yet? This is fine, I guess. Not super original but I'm not mad.
Good British neo-psychedelia album from the early 2000s, even the album cover reminds me of albums from the late 60s. It was those times in the 2000s when indie rock bands started to emerge after the grunge and nu metal era of the 1990s. This album is quite varied and interesting, though in my opinion, not that special to give it a 4 or higher.
Had no idea what to expect but enjoyed the ride
This was fine, but nothing great.
This was very interesting, as a Rock album after Radiohead supposedly ended the album era. There's a late 60's folk/psych feel here that is charming and sincere. Lots of musical variety and some intrguing surprises here and there without being overly ambitious, making this an enjoyable listen. The album feels very live - as if I were listening to the band in the pub wherever these dudes are from, everyone is having a great time. Really fun.
Not the worst. Very pirate-y in feel
Average background.
Not offensive, not remarkable.
I absolutely LOVE Dreaming of You and the two or three songs surrounding it are good, but the last half of the album is a real slog to get through. Their hidden track is just awful. It needed to be at least sped up by 2x in order to even be palatable.
This record is a little hard to pin down. I like it, but I'm still not really sure what to make of it. I've seen it compared to albums by The White Stripes and The Strokes and I don't see that at all. It was just released around the same time. I kind of feel like the album plays a lot like the cover looks - just lots of different stuff all over but it all kind of works together. Still, I'm a little surprised to have found it on this list. I really liked I Remember When, Dreaming of You, Waiting for the Heartaches, and Bad Man. I'd listen to this again for sure, and would probably pick it up and throw it on from time to time if I saw it in the record shop. 3.5/5 but rounding to 3 because it's not really a 4/5.
"The Coral" is the debut album by British rock band the Coral. Neo-pyschdelia and folk rock are the named genres but they actually dig into a lot more. The band had a residency at the Cavern in Liverpool before recording. The album was produced by Lightning Seeds' frontman Ian Broudie and the band themselves. The band is James Skelly (vocals, guitar), Lee Sothall (guitar), Bill Ryder-Jones (guitar, trumpet), Paul Duffy ( bass, sax), Nick Powers (keyboards) and Ian Skelly (drums). Commercially, the album reached #5 in the UK and #189 in the US. It had universal acclaim and was nominated for the 2002 Mercury Prize. Feedback and a guitar in low keys opens "Spanish Man." Rollicking drums. Layered vocals. Alright, this is OK. He's set sail again. "Shadow Fall" starts out like a spaghetti western. It morphs into some sort of reggae. There's a harmonica and that guitar in low keys again. I'm semi-confused now. They start to really mix things up now. The second single "Dreaming of You" is upbeat and I'm reminded of the Jam. Not for long though, as doo-wop backing vocals comes in. There's a country rock-esque guitar solo. The first single "Goodbye" does a nice job of mixing 60's pop with pyschedelia. There's 60's- sounding guitar and lead and backing vocals. A guitar solo leads them into the pyschedelic. Things slow up...wah-wah guitars, tom tom drums and a man counting down backwards. Nice! The album ends on a high note with "Calendars and Clocks." Acoustic and electric guitars. James Skelly doing his best Scott Walker. A Spanish-folk vibe. Don't worry, the pace picks up and slows down. The song ends with Beach Boys' harmonies and more 60's-esque music. The album covers a whole lot styles including traditional Russian music, spaghetti Western, reggae, pyschedelic, Middle Eastern, Frank Zappa, the Teardrops Explodes, blues, folk, country rock and 60's pop. It is a very busy album and straddled the line between brilliance and annoying me...often within the same song. Over time, it kind of won me over. There's more high moments than low. The music and band are challenging falling into a specific genre or category which I admire.
The Coral - The Coral 2002 album from some blokes in the UK. Mix of 60s garage sounds, rockabilly, and an impression of the Doors. I had never heard of this band or the album. They have an interesting sound and I would probably listen to them again. 3/5
If you’ve ever wondered what it would sound like if a 2000s garage band made 60s rock well here’s your chance! This is exactly what they’re making and they’re doing so in several different ways. Sometimes heavy and grungy, sometimes undeniably catchy.
Love the Coral mostly - some amazing tracks drawing lineage back to the best of British pop. This album is really quite patchy though
B Spanish Main 3 I Remember When 4 Shadows Fall 3 Dreaming Of You 5 Simon Diamond 4 Goodbye 3 Waiting For The Heartaches 4 Skeleton Key 3 Wildfire 3 Badman 3 Calendars And Clocks 3 Time Travel 4 This was Fun.
Nice sounds
I don't know that if I wasn't already aware, that I could have identified the decade this was made in, which is kind of cool.
Okish tribute to 60s British rock. What gets me is how insanely good Dreaming of You is compared to the rest of the album. One hit wonder almost. If I'd written a song like that I'd have harnassed all my energy to achieving 10 other songs like it, but it feels like they only got anywhere near close once or twice.
Almost every song reminds me of the theme song from Insomniac with Dave Attell. Kick the sandman in his sack, stay up late Insomniac!
3.5/5. These dudes are stuck in the 60s.
Interesting, but a bit repetitive
Interesting, good, but not probably something I would continue listening to.
This one was just aight to me. Not bad, but not really memorable. I might need to come back to it, though.
Vakuuttajat: loppupuolen rokkarit Skeleton Key ja Bad Man.
ganz ok
This is a really cool 1960s album apart from it was made in the 2000s and it's so derivative it's almost painful to listen to. I'm going to give it 3 stars for effort, as it must be difficult to come up with original music in the folk-psychedelia genre.
It’s hard to believe this album is over 20 years old. I remember really enjoying it when I was younger, and it still holds up today. It’s packed with fun, catchy pop, and Dreaming of You remains an undeniable classic. Favourite Song: Dreaming of You – infectious, timeless, and full of energy. Least Favourite: Some of the later tracks feel a bit flat and don’t quite match the strength of the earlier ones. Album Artwork: A cool cover with a distinct '60s vibe that suits the band's retro-tinged sound. A nostalgic and enjoyable listen that still delivers plenty of charm.
The Coral has one incredible, timeless song, and then another half an hour of stuff that's just okay. I don't mind it, Skeleton Key is a riot and the next best track, everything else just fine. A low 3 because Dreaming of You is brilliant brilliant stuff and also the soundtrack to an iconic Scrubs moment.
Another “good in an early 2000s British” way, I guess. I don’t know. Above average? Not life changing, but I might keep it in the rotation. Solidly fine.
3/5. I super enjoyed the first half of the album, but it definitely falls off later, simple and kind of lazy writing. The first few feel diverse and original and unique, like I'm listening to a band finding their roots. They have some bangers but not exceedingly cool throughout. Just a little cool.
Not sure if I'll ever want to listen to this again, but I did really enjoy some of the genre fusion & featured instruments
60s psychedelic throwback. That sounds like something I’d super for on paper but it does fall flat on occasion, mostly because it gets a little too interested in being wEiRd and turns hokey. Some good songs and a solid sound here, though. Best song: Dreaming of You
After the second listen I realized that the album isn't as bad as I first thought. But it doesn't go beyond a 3 star.
I’ve always loved Dreaming of You and I like a couple of their later singles. I didn’t expect the rest of this album to be quite this weird. I respect that they are doing their own unique thing, I just don’t particularly like it.
Couldn’t listen to this album as it’s not on Apple Music. Listened to some songs on Apple Music. Sounds fun!
Musically it's not bad, but as an album felt more disjointed than creative.
If you bought this album purely for Dreaming of You - as teenage me did - you might be disappointed, but that's not a bad thing: this is more inventive and more experimental than you might expect from the lead single. Said song is great, but relatively safe. The album is closer to ska and to the Libertines than you'd expect. 3.5
Mixed ok rock
Haven’t heard of them or the album. Alternative Rock from 2002. Not a bad vibe, definitely know Dreaming of You which I’ve added to the library. High 3 otherwise.
Not a bad album but nothing special. Surprised this counts as an album I have to listen to before I die…
I'd never considered listening to these guys beyond Dreaming of You. The album was better than I imagined but didn't blow me away. I like the instrumentation, they use some interesting sounds. I didn't find any songs I prefer to the big one though. Standout Track: Dreaming of You
Not my cup of tea but I can tell it's well made and could see it being influential in this space.
An interesting mix of shanties and 60s style rock.
This might be more a theme of a bunch of meh albums recently, but I’m having a hard time understanding why some of these are on here
This album brings back memories. I heard the song "Dreaming Of You" on the TV Show "Scrubs" and had to find out who wrote it. The album is good, I listened to it a lot back then and it still holds up.
A band from the Liverpool area with psychedelic overtones, discovered playing in the Cavern Club - no, not those guys, it’s the Coral. Really enjoyed the mish mash of styles on this, sung in a Jim Morrison sort of style. Opening your debut album with a piratey shanty is a bold move, but one I like. Great stuff!
This is pretty decent for a "The" band from the early '00s. The psychedelic side of the band is nice and they provide a good update of the genre. Singer voice is great, his inflections sometimes reminds me of Ryan Kattner of Man Man, and it definitely plays a role in the "sea shanty" feeling of some of the songs. When they mix their sound with ska/reggae, it's a bit more dull though (at least they don't sing with a fake Jamaican accent like Sting).
Never before heard of the band and album. It's a pleasing mix of folk and psychedelic rock, enriched with some elements from other genres like ska. The voice of the singer sometimes reminded me of Arnim Teutoburg-Weiß from German band Beatsteaks. Won't listen to it again, but it weren't wasted 34 minutes.
Pretty interesting music, I only listened to about .5”6 songs, and they were fun, but not compelling enough for me to give more stars
Definitely what you'd expect from British Rock. Not my cup of tea, but not necessarily bad. Just not something I'd usually seek out or enjoy.
This doesn’t sound like 2002. The songs with organ give it a 60’s vibe, while some of the other songs lean into a gypsy/ Gogol Bordello type of sound. I like it fine, but it seems like a stretch for it to be included in this list. 3.3
Sort of 60s retro/psychobilly sound with hard rock at times. It's an interesting niche but I'm not super into it. Good album if you're having a kitschy halloween burlesque show in your basement. 3.0
Nice album, I like the mix of music and keeps me interested during the whole album.
It was not bad
Bit of an odd collection that is diverse in musical styles but the individual tracks could have had more character.
Kinda fun rockabilly sound.
This was a rare album that I didn’t like more with repeated listening. First time around I appreciated the guitar playing and their bringing in other styles, like reggae, hard rock and pub music. Also, the singer had a great voice. With time, the sing-along nature of the choruses started to get to me.
Wouldn’t listen again except maybe “Goodbye” and “Waiting for the Heartache,” but I enjoyed it just a smidge more than I thought I would. “Calendars and Clocks” was a strong finish. I’m just not into bands imitating Spanish rock. Perhaps if it were a Santana album…
A little punk a little ska a little Roma with a melody here and there with the smallest touch of surf rock feel. Interesting
Reading all the accolades, I expected more. The beginning was ok, by the end it became very annoying.
Post-britpop, but entirely less wanky than their contemporaries. Dreaming of you is genuinely a fun track, however the rest of this album strays worryingly close to twee in its perkiness. The biases and pecadillos of the compiler really show up in this selection, though. White boys (check) from the North-ish of England (check) and making music almost specifically for Oxfordshire-born journos working for Melody Maker or the NME (check) - it more or less couldn't not make it to the list. And it really shouldn't have. One decent track doesn't make an album, and there's a good few hundred albums I'd opt for before this one.
Solid
Is every chorus just 6 words repeated over and over and over and over?
Whirlwindy Indie Americana with klezmer’esques circus parts and a brasse greeting card from The Zutons. 2.5
Ihan ok!
Ok
Okay. This album does not deserve to be on this list. It simply does not have enough cultural significance or substantial quality to warrant its inclusion. Fortunately, more recent versions of the 1001 albums book have omitted this album from the list. With that said, this album isn't that bad, at least compared to the other albums that I've claimed do not deserve to be on the list. The sound is pretty good at times. It's somewhat interesting. The singing could be better, but it could be worse. The writing was a bit confusing, and I'm not exactly sure what most of the songs were about. The album doesn't really drag on for too long, which is good. I did actually like this album at times. However, it is fairly forgettable and, as stated earlier, is not significant or excellent enough to belong on this list. However, I will give this album credit for being decent and give it a light 3/5.
It's okay but has a novelty feeling all the way through
In the morning: great. Everything else: not great
Decent alt indie rock with some slight Ween-like pysch tendencies
Perfect 3
It's fine. Some interesting songs, but a lot of it just feels like sort of generic throwback classic rock. Not sure whether it belongs on this list. 3 stars.
the album was... okay.
music for people who think dave mathews is god’s grace to earth
Fairly fresh and spiky and energetic but grows a little tiresome after a time, with too many herbs and spices in an overbearing (also forgettable) stew one won't be particularly tempted to consume again anytime soon.
This was ok. Didn’t sound like standard music from 2002.
2.5 stars. Eh wasn't really into this. Felt like ballad-y psychedelia rock. Fun dueling guitars at times, but overall this was a little too repetitive at times. Standout was "Simon Diamond".
Bland naughties half-hearted drivel mainly. Loads of filler with one stonking great killer. Every album was like this in the halcyon nme days of new indie. A bit good a lot bland.
Of all that british new wave i like them the least
Interesting outing from another band I'd never heard of. I liked the energy and originality. Eclectic perhaps to a fault though - stylistically so all over the map I felt like it had no cohesive center to bring it all together.
Best ok, soort van hitje kwam voorbij zelfs
Dit was lekker energiek.
Afgezien van het hitje niet heel spannend.
Fun
Ok
Not listened to before
Kind of bland, not necessarily bad. But I did not get much from this. Maybe I would have a different opinion after another listen.
I remember when and waiting for the heartaches were pretty solid. Another album I’ve never heard off but it was enjoyable to listen to. Nothing to crazy about this album but definitely a fun listen
Kinda like the album. But I hate it for being on this list, because it doesn't belong. But after over 1070 albums I'm getting used to this haha.
polypcystic
Very formulaic- song structure and verses, taglines with guitar solo and doo-wop backing singers - almost a look back to the 60's merseybeat. Having said all that it's bright and poppy, simple and feelgood music. Not suprisingly produced by Ian Broudie. Good for a happy sunny day.
Second time listening to this. It’s fine.
Nothing special
I think this will be great at festivals. Very varied record! While listening i swung from 2 to 4 stars and back again so i will give this a solid 3 stars. I get people like it but most likely i won't listen to this again.
Weirdly entertaining. Seems like it was created as a joke, but somehow works.
Brani Preferiti: - "I Remember When" - "Dreaming of You" Note: Un disco che sembra giocare con diversi stili, cui nucleo però rimane rock.
This is a hodgepodge of early 2000s Indie, 60s garage rock and Brit-pop styles, with some odd little flourishes drawn from everything from folk to ska and psychedelia. Throw in a sea shanty in while you're at it, why the hell not? Some of the songs sound weirdly of another time, mostly in a cool way. It's fine musically, but I found the vocals irritating. Fave Songs: Goodbye, Dreaming of You, Calendars and Clocks, I Remember When, Wildfire
The psychedelic vibes were pretty enjoyable, but still a generic british album from the beginning of the Century. Should it really be on this list? You already know the answer.
This album is very 1001core, by being british, indie and not that important at all in the history of music. That said, it was a nice listen to be honest.
Sometimes I get a run of records that has me wonder if any ability to think words is gone, or if sounds now present nothing but a gray blanket demanding a knife stuck through. Nothing like that here, but calling The Coral gray doesn't do justice. At times the pace of the record is reminiscent of stronger micro-pop collections, with rock showing its weak side - sad to say given the ska interpolations. Later tracks near speak-singing concept, a better vector for indie in my mind. The band certainly seems overhated here, but their debut smacks of promising idea, empty gas tank.
An average band with an average album is just enough for the average times we have right now. A sort of folk rock with a forgettable songs (honestly, I have listened to this record few hours ago, and I remember nothing). Interesting gimmick, but not down my path
Weird in a mostly good way, but wears out its welcome very quickly. Best track: Shadows Fall
Rocks credibly and somewhat freshly, but very much in the early-aught "rock renaissance" mode. Thus, it seems a little tired and predictable today. The melange-y-ness of this is both feature and bug, but overall a rollicking romp, with some nice vintage psych flourishes of the Swinging London, Carnaby Street sense.
"Dreaming of You" was one of my favorite songs, back then. It's pretty good, still.
For the most part, I enjoyed The Coral's retro pseudo-psych sound. At times, it legit sounded like a different era (60's) that takes me back and the musicianship captures that sound well . With that being said, I'm not sure this music will be memorable, it doesn't offer any new ideas or unique styles. Can the band move forward and expand on the sound? I like the album, but it's limiting and I can't say I'll remember much of it tomorrow.
Up the reds
A lot of fun
3.5 but I'm interested in this band I didn't know
22nd September 2023 Listened on the drive back from Norfolk. Very eclectic album with one era defining single. Under multiple listens would probably be higher scoring.
Never heard of them so a few surprises. Dreaming of You was a standout. Some other good listens but some stuff was a bit too experimental for me to just “listen” to.
Just like the album cover, the music itself is pretty much all over the place as well. Some of it works. Some doesn’t. I definitely don’t hate it. Not quite sure why it’s on this list, though.
Would this be considered part of the post-punk revival bands of the early 2000's? I can't say for certain, but what I do know is that they have some great songs on here. It's all loud and rockin' and differentiated. I can't help but feel there's a weird gap in quality here, not sure where but it's holding the album back. Either way, I appreciate the energy.
I enjoyed the instrumentation more than the vocals/lyrics. Interesting tempo changes, so it wasn't boring at least. But not my thing.
I cannot place this band at ALL. I don't love it but I certainly don't hate it either.
Not my cup of tea
"Weel set sail ageeen" WTF is that...? Musically, I dig The Coral but the accents kill the rest of it for me. British bands that embellish or feign American accents are like putting on deodorant when you should just take a shower... we can still smell you and it's not good. Chances are that even if you're 100% authentic I still won't dig you. Case in point, Arctic Monkeys, great music, but then Alex Turner and his syrupy British voice ruins it. Anyhow, The Coral is a band I totally missed, there's some decent stuff on this album and after that first track, it sails. Sure there are some errant tambourines but some great hooks. Dreaming of You sounds familiar and judging by the number of plays on Spotify it's included in some soundtrack, rightfully so. The song cooks with a great bass line intro and organ. Other successful experimentation can be found on Wildfire with the xylophone and maracas. After two solid listens, I'm interested to check out some of their other work, but this album's gotta find a home somewhere else.
Liked "Dreaming of You". Worth a relisten.
overall thoughts: imma be honest, not the biggest fan of sea-shanties or sea-shanty influenced music. the only tracks I really enjoyed were dreaming of you & goodbye. but even then I dunno if I'd come back to em. these tracks weren't terrible tho, just not my vibe. 3/5.
Yeah I haven’t actually listened to it yet.
“Dabble-do, woo ooh, dabble-do, woo ooh…” The Coral is all over the place, and not in a good way. Just when you think there’s something you like (and there’s definitely some strong potential), they pull a 180 and switch genres mid-song or bollocks it up with a lousy lyric. “Dreaming of You” and “Goodbye” were pretty decent, but “Shadows Fall” and the “yabble-dabble doing” of “Simon Diamond” really brought this down for me. And lest we forget: “Calendars Clocks and hickory docks (tick tock) Calendars Clocks and hickory docks (tick tock) Yeah Calendars Clocks and hickory docks (tick tock)” A 3… just barely. So close to a 2 because of some of its worse bits.
I feel like someone took a bunch of music that I like, chopped it into jigsaw pieces, and then put it back together randomly. Too disjointed for me to really get into, the album was bookended by some songs with lyrics that were pretty terrible, but I enjoyed dreaming of you.
not terrible but also not the best
I don't even know what genre this is. Supposedly psychedelic. I wasn't listening that closely but nothing grabbed me. Wasn't bad either.
Some really great stuff but also some really bad stuff. In the end, it comes out in a wash to produce a very middling album
generic rock that is kinda good, if i relisten i might add songs to playlist
Superb English late 90's rock album, from a band I had never heard of. All of the tracks were entertaining and a few were easy hits! Great album and band!
A unique blend of styles that works well for the most part. Everything ranges from okay to good, but fails to be consistently great. Points for novelty and a few diamonds in the rough.3/5
I enjoyed this one. ***
good album - a lot of variation between songs and very nice songs indeed. good album overall
eh
nice Album, nice music
3
Not too bad. It has one song that sounds like it was recorded in 1965.
Pirate music.
Throw-back, but still fresh.
I didn’t mind the sound of this one, but I didn’t find it particularly memorable. It’s almost got a little bit of a 60s sound on some of the tracks, but a definite 90s sound on others.
Interesting. I enjoyed this
so good! but like 2-3 solid songs
Nice but not spectacular
It was great! but not too memorable.
Tiny hint of Ska-ness that i didn't like but overall nice nice. Kind of psych in parts especially in Goodbye, Bad Man and Skeleton Key and he's got a bit of a Jim Morrison voice sometimes. Can here some Zutons in there as well.
They had a good sound. Dreaming of you takes me back to 1st year in college.
I like the coral. You forget some of the classic they knocked out.
I was really excited for this one but it never quite got to where I was hoping it would. Just not quite as listenable as I like my weird rock.
Fav Song: Goodbye
interesting but nothing great or want to listen to again
coral e tal
Again, kinda standard. Good though, would listen again for a chill time
Nice
Kind of a neat record with a wide variety of instruments. "Dreaming of You" is one of those songs you've heard a hundred times without knowing the origin. Lots of pulse to this one. Favorite tracks: "Waiting for the Heartaches", "Bad Man"
When you blend disparate items together, sometimes you bless the world with a phantasmagorical concoction that betters human civilization. Sometimes, you get a brown sludge that tastes like charred battery acid. This falls into the latter category.
2 stars feels harsh because it was an alright album but I wasn’t really that into any songs outside of Dreaming of You, so here we are
Lots of pop music. Nothing special for me.
they all of these influences yet they don’t really do anything with them except mimic them…
I hardly got anything out of this album. Some of the songs sounded silly and unnecessary. ‘Dreaming of You’ is a fantastic song and really saved the album for me because there wasn’t much else that stood out to me except some decent guitar riffs.
4 tracks in I was liking it, the first track with the sea shanty thing, Dreaming of You is quite catchy, the singer is good, love his accent, his Alex Turner type of accent, from where is that? From Yorkshire innit? They're not from the same place you say? I don't know, Hoylake? What the fuck is that? He don't sound like a beetle? Anyway, by the end I was tired of these guys, they're - not bad, but many of their ideas just fall flat, it's irritating.
Totally forgettable and leaves no real impression at all. As I write this I struggle to even remember why it was so unmemorable. I do recall one of the things I didn't like was the folk-y feel to some of the songs. The rest... just kind of there.
It was OK. I like the modern take on 60s psych / Iggy Pop influence, but its not for me
Ah the early 2000’s. Where every group of white guys that could manage to record one decent single were the Saviors of Rock & Roll(tm) who were going to be around forever and sell more than the Beatles, until their second record tanked and everyone promptly forgot about them.
I should like this more, but I just don't. I found it annoying; the mix of styles felt forced. The mix of the album also threw me off. Lots of things were so much louder than others, like on Skeleton Key. The vocals and lead guitar drowned everything else out.
meh out of ehh 2.99
I always lumped The Coral.togerher with The Zutons, who admittedly came a few years later. Quite liked the singles they put out if they came on the radio but not enough to investigate them further. I saw Zutons live once and they were an energwtuc, fun show. I got there album on this project and enjoyed a few other tracks aside from the singles and gavd that a three star rating, so I can't give this any more than a 2 because I only enjoyed Dreaming of You and Goodbye. I also discovered they've just put out a new album. I gave it a listen and, sadly, can repirt they haven't got any better in the intervening quarter of a century
This strikes me as a band who doesn’t know who they want to be. The music, at least this album, is a combination of too many styles, to the point where it’s just kind of strange. None of it flows. I don’t think it’s bad, I just don’t know what it is.
- aggressively "meh" -- the Wikipedia page lists a lot of the inspiration the musicians drew from when composing the album (including Trout Mask Replica!), but I didn't catch any of it during my listen - near the end of the album, I was thinking about whether this or something outrageously bizarre like The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter (another recent listen from this project) would be worse if I were stuck on a desert island with nothing else for entertainment, and I came to the conclusion that this would definitely be worse - vaguely pirate-y but not really, with nothing in the lyrics or musicality to pass the time thinking about or dissecting for fun. it was hard to feel invested in any of the songs - it would not surprise me if this group was a favorite when performing only around their local pub scene (and I'm sure the live performances were/are entertaining), but I'm surprised this effort received any international attention at all
Not really a fan. Boring and derivative.
That was a fairly wild ride. I had only heard one of the tracks before, 'Dreaming of You', and that's a decent toe-tapping track. There were a couple of further tracks that were decent, but there was quite a lot of 'weird' tracks. They weren't bad, like I had to turn it off, but they just didn't seem to fit into the album. I get the feeling the band was trying to shoehorn as many genres in as possible, and that just weakened the whole thing for me personally. I did make it all the way through, which guarantees 2 stars!
This is not my cup of tea. I will say one thing this band has going for them is that at least on this record they weren’t afraid to get a little weird. Compare that with other roots revival bands from the early aughts - I’m looking at you Band of (Fucking) Horses - and it at least feels like they were trying to break new ground.
The sounded like a weird mando diao record. Not a fan.
There was just one song I really liked in this album, and I only first heard it in Scrubs.
2.5
I only liked "dreaming of you"the others are not good at all i give it a generous 3/10
2.5. Few great songs but think I'm just not a big fan of the ska influence
Not heard of this band. Started really strong. Great arrangements and instrumentation, but that waned quickly. The overall sound is ska adjacent so that's no good. The songs seem to be covers of good songs by a local pub band. The bones are there, but it doesn't work.
Weird and kinda dumb.
Really a filler album, not memorable or good. 2 stars
Oh man! What is up with this list?
Props for the variety. They try a lot of things on this record, and some of it is genuinely quite good. But much of it is bad, and all of it seems hollow and soulless.
NASRANO
Brutal. This 1001 album thing is killing my hope. Tomorrow it will be something good! And then utter let down. Day after day. This sounds like a band that plays on scooby doo.
Thought it was going to be good but then, nope.
Literally nothing momarable here, besides one or two OK songs.
Pastiche mosaic.
Very forgettable. There were a variety of styles explored on this album, but nothing stood out to me. Pass.
horrific ska/pub music slop
this didn’t hold my interest at all, i found it so hard to concentrate on what i was listening to
Not horrible but a one and done.
2002. Nada novedoso, rock and roll de los 90.
I feel pretty underwhelmed after listening to this. 'Dreaming Of You' is such a wonderful song, and so I had really high hopes for the rest of the album. Maybe it deserves a second listen but I just didn't get on with most of the tracks here. Can't work out why it deserves a spot on this list! Favourites: Dreaming of You Waiting for the Heartaches Skeleton Key
jack white and modest mouse sing sea shanties
Nope, not interesting at all...
kinda more like a one hit wonder
Interesting, but I don't really feel like it was brining anything too new to the party. Kind of just feels like, well, an album from 2002.
Haven't heard of them before. Well it's just your average early 00s British thing but it had some interesting moments 2/5
More mediocre early 2000s beta band sounding shit. I think I'm ready to be done with this list
Not awful.
There was one song which was vaguely familiar but the rest was kinda disappointing
This is the type of gnarly indie like The Libertines or The Strokes that I've always found dreadful. This is only saved by some decent enough songwriting, quite liked 'Waiting For The Heartaches' for example.
At least they tried something I guess
This is fine.
I really didn’t care for this album. I don’t know what it was other than the sound of it mainly. I tried to like some of the songs like goodbye but it just didn’t do it for me
First things first... I owe The Thrills a massive, public apology. A few weeks back I said they were one of the weakest "The" band from this early 200s era, but then I had to listen to The Coral again, and wow... The Thrills were just kinda boring with their california band vibes and incessant location name dropping, but The Coral? It's a mess, a total disaster. They apparently have to have every instrument imaginable, but it doesn't make them good. They only have one decent song, "Dreaming Of You," and even that feels weird next to everything else. Listening to this album is like having a bad dream. Someone tried to mix polka, ska, and some weird folk stuff, and it's just... awful. It hasn't just not aged well, it's gone bad.
This one managed to annoy me. Feels bland and abrasive by design and I couldn't stand the vocals. Instrumentals were nice? Didn't finish the album. - Disorienting intro. Quirky, but also lame rock at the same time? - Sorry, I don't get it. I don't need some guy shouting at me? Instrumentals are unique I guess?
A one hit wonder does not make a good album. They're a one hit wonder for a reason... 2 ⭐️
the only song that i liked in this album was i remember when. sooo idk
2,5
Some cool bits here and there, but overall forgettable.
not my speed
A bit all over the place, with a weird amount of klezmer? sounding stuff.
Won’t return to this. Definitely not the worst thing in the world but this type of music is just not for me.
It’s okay. I don’t think I will go back and listen again, though. Where are they now? Is this really one of the most important records of all time?
an album lost at sea with no direction of what it wants to be. there's glimpses of something maybe okay, but it's turn of the century british rock that tries to hit on every genre under the sun, so what is there to expect? it's such an uninspired time in music. there's a million albums like this where you could exchange any song across any rock album from around this time and the average listener would be none the wiser. the idea that this is an important or notable album in any capacity is such a joke.
There's half of a pretty good album in here. The reviews on this website are REALLY harsh against this so I was expecting something absolutely dogshit but its not quite that. It's a retro-rock revival album from the early 2000s and is highly competent at that and not much more then that. It's inherently going to be the musical equivalent of finding tobasco spicy. I liked "shadows falls" and "Dreaming of You" but the second half falls into a straight up nose dive with songs like "Goodbye" sounding like generic brit rock and songs like "Skeleton Key" straight up sucking imo. It's like they were dipping into too many different forms of rock and ended up inadequately exploring all of them. Breadth of an Ocean, depth of a swimming pool. Honestly this album might have the largest second half drop off we've seen yet. It's half a 4 and half a 1, so I guess it's a 2?
Don’t understand the love for this. I don’t like the beats, the rhymes, his voice or his cadence.
meh- pretty average. it feels generic and i got bored 3 songs in
This was an odd, genre-defying entry. Part polka, part ska, part indie, part psychedelic, part folk, this album definitely defies expectations of an album released in 2002. While the composition of the songs were intriguing, if not a bit chaotic, I didn't really find this to be a pleasant or an essential listen.
boring
If I cannot remember what the album was the day after listening to it, then it must be pretty bland, but not memorably awful. Two.
Not quite as bad as some of the other landfill indie of the time but we really didn’t need a reimagining of the jangle pop of ‘the lad’s’ with the smallest smidge of psychedelia. Singles aside (though the were relative highs rather than absolute), this was a rather boring trudge through to the end. Vocals grated on me, mixing grated on me (far, far too much treble for my liking) and wasn’t sad when it finished at all.
Only recognise 1 song, rest if pass on to be honest!
0 reason for me to listen to this before I die. I think the best word for it is "annoying" Best Song: I Remember When Rating: 3/10 Stars: 2
Not in my edition of the book! 2002. 2 stars. At first I thought this was by a 60s band that had somehow slipped under my radar. Nope, it's millennium scousers reliving their grandparents favourite "beat" records. Well done of its kind, but oddly soulless. Worth a listen though.
Revivalists without much original to say. Just listen to The Animals or Tge Doors.
Like the Fratellis or Arctic Monkeys. Not all that compelling.
Most of this was boisterous, annoying nonsense. I appreciate its unique blend of genres, but unfortunately, like orange juice + toothpaste, some combinations will just never taste good.
Sounded kinda pirate-y? which was cool but all in all not really my thing
it’s a more commercial-sounding matchbox twenty. bland but slight replay value.
Complex, well crafted... But not my taste, at least at the time I listened to this...
I think I’m being more harsh as I inch towards the finish line because early on in this challenge I would have probably given this 3 stars and thought it was “fine.” But now I’m like, ugh fuck this. This is so pretentious I think I can actually hear them getting high off their own farts in some of these tracks. A few okay moments, but overall this was more bothersome British shit.
This was okay, I liked it a little more than I expected based on the reviews of my listening friends. 2+ but not enough to round up.
Eh, nothing really jumped out at me for this one. Really a huge mishmash of song genres that never really seemed to find a right path.
I barely remember that I listened to this on Friday, wasn't terrible.
It was aight, but didn't stand out to me very much.
Kinda meh, they have a vibe but its just sorta bland. Forgettable
a couple interesting tracks but mostly just a bog standard brit rock album.
2.5
Album was good but not 1001 to listen to before you die.
It was fine
Dreaming of You is a great song, the rest all over the place but short at least.
Infelizmente não rolou.
I had several problems with this record. The songs mostly seemed half-formed, jolting from one style to another within the same track. There was very little flow. I found the lyrics pointless as well. Not for me. Ah well, on to the next one.
Not bad but not real memorable
Nytt for meg. Top 3: I Remember When, Dreaming of You, Shadows Fall
This was not very good l.
Interesting and not annoying. But nothing special here.
Pretty ordinary honestly
As with the majority of early 00s British music additions to this list, they are undeserving of a place. I gather it has since been removed from later additions but it's beyond me how, although somewhat unique and interesting, this can be deemed top 1001 material. Dreaming of You was a very catchy tune in my teens, but a lot of the album is a bit of a struggle now.
The fact that this album (as of writing) had an absolutely perfect normal distribution of ratings was significantly more interesting than the album itself.
Got about halfway through this album and felt exhausted. I get it, the author of this list is English and felt the need to thrust a lot of obscure and frankly shitty English bands at us, but this is getting ridiculous. I didn't like any of this.
i didn't love it mostly because of the vocals which i didn't like also i just found it kinda uninteresting
Eh, not terrible but didn't enjoy it.
This was fine. I likely won't ever listen again.
Listens to this album yesterday and make can remember a single thing about it. Which is never a good sign. 2.5/5
Not my fave. Plenty of variety of song styles. Just did not talk to me at all.
I grew up where The Coral grew up so have a slight issue of being massively over exposed to them. Still regularly name dropped by my brother’s mates 20+ years later, seemingly unaware the rest of the world has moved on. “ey lad gerron this rite. Bin chattin to James Skelly / Bill Ryder-Jones. Says he’ll produce me new EP if I go round is gaff this Satdy.” “Is it yeah? Sound tha ya know.” “Is rite. Giz a go on that lemo there lad”
A bunch of scouse scallies take acid and record an album. They stole the airwaves for a bit in the early '00s - lucky they didn't steal your bike. I didn't fall for the hype then and I'm not falling for it now. Thinks it's weird and quirky, when actually it is just a bit of a bore. Best Tracks: Dreaming of You; Goodbye;
Ok at times, but irritating most of the time. I wouldn't compare this guy's voice to Jim Morrison's at all, but the music is kind of the same vein--for better or worse. 2/5
It seemed like it might be interesting but unfotuneately it isn't. 2 stars or D+.
This was weird. And not weird-good, but maybe, possibly, weird-interesting, provided many listens, which I just didn't have the heart for yesterday. The first song I though I truly kinda liked by this album turned out to be the Apple Music auto-play of another artist after this album ended. This is better than 50 Cent though--I think I will forever regret giving that album 2 stars.
How is there not yet an emoji for a wet fart? I realize a literal image would be problematic, but something cultural, along of the likes of how the anodyne eggplant is now forever a dong. #itstime Anyways, I need one for this album. I classify it under the hood of English Lout-Lad Rock, a genre that started around the time of the Rolling Stones, but I’m sure lives on today. I reckon that louty lads especially had a day around the mid-aughts: Kasabian, The Streets, and I guess The Coral, though this is the first I’ve heard of them. +1 star for the reasonably cool harmonies, which season these bland shouty songs with a little sea shanty saltiness. Alas, I thought this was a great new discovery, but 🍑💦💨
Was not really what I expected it to be, but that also didnt mean that I enjoyed it too much.
I remember these kinds of bands a lot in the 90s. I think the one that did it the best was Mano Negra. As for The Coral, the mix of styles is interesting and it’s well played and recorded but for me it sounds a little stilted and a bit too clever for its own good as if trying to win over a conservative audience in a friendly way which they no doubt did. This is good but for me is not essential listening. Personally I’m not sure that I would ever need to listen to this again however I might play this to a group of the right people at a party if they were somewhat adventurous but conservative listeners.
Some cool sounds from this obscure (to me) band from across the pond, but otherwise a forgettable album. Not sure what makes this list-worthy, similar to several other generic British bands that seem ever-present on this list.
2.8
🤷♂️
British Rock
I usually love psychedelic music but this was not it for me. Kinda boring and not really something I haven’t heard before.
Blind album and artist. Loved how it started, but got the end dragged for me.
Meh
Just started to get on my nerves before I was finished with the album. Not good.
This what happens when someone good at Karaoke is off-handedly told they could start a band but takes it way too seriously and only bloody goes and does it, but just stole a bunch of songs from those compilations put out by record labels that scour the third world for obscure Peruvian cumbia synthpop, Zambian circus psych, or Balkan disco jazz vinyl to re-release.
Remarkably forgettable sorry
Yeah I can see why they are a one hit wonder
