Enige andere franse rapper die ik ken is MHD maar dat is totaal anders. Lekkere old school beats met een goede flow
Have to say at first I didn't really know what to make of this. But it grew on me. I reckon this would be great background summer party music. Weirdly I recognised one from the Greg Davies sit com Man Down, a funny scene involving Zumba. Wish I could give a 3.5
Melko pätevän kuulosta räppiä. Biitit tosi jees, vielä ku ois ymmärtäny mistä biisit kerto
Even though my native tongue belongs to the same family as French, I still couldn't anything about it. But damn, I love songs in French! The sound and tone of this language suits hip hop extremely well. This was a pretty good album, not life changing, but still cool. A lot of the songs are forgettable, but there aren't many bad songs per se. The jazz and swing instrumentation and MC Solaar's flow were surely the best part of the album.
Don’t understand french. This really could be either a 4 or a 2
Pretty groove, probably won’t listen to it again after this tho
It's okay jams
79/100: For a brief moment, while driving back from class, listening to this music blasting with my windows down, I felt like a limitless French teenager. All I needed was a cigarette and I could've been any one of the local kids in Kortenberg. This album sets a tone better than most albums I've ever listened to, perhaps a part of that is with most of the lyrics going over my head, all that is left is the music. Another part is, only being able to understand fragments of sentences contributes a beauty that's hard to put into words. In "Caroline," I picked up on "I rethought her, us…" and "strawberries, raspberries, blueberries." Clearly this song is about some sort of love, my sense is an ex who MC Solaar wishes he could be back with. I love drawing conclusions based on the few lines I can understand. It's impossible to do that with music in English. I've never thought about this aspect of French music, but perhaps I'll explore more of it solely for that unique experience.
Had nog nooit oude Franse rap geluisterd. Vond het een easy listen en sommige nummers klonken heel tijdloos
I’m not a fan of rap but in French it’s quite good.
The language barrier seems an even greater obstruction than usual with rap, where quality is so tied up (at least for me) with the strength of the wordplay. It sounded good, I didn’t mind listening to to it. The backing music and beats were fine but didn’t stand out.
Not a clue what they were saying, but it's pretty chill.
Released during “The Year of Gio” Makes me want a croissant and a cigarette Ragga Jam was my fav
I liked this one musically. No idea what the lyrics are sayinf, but easy to listen to.
better than I expected tbh
No es mi género, no es mi idioma pero se escucha bien hasta que el sonsonete me cansa, igual que todo el hip hop. Las mezclas están muy bien hechas.
I really like the funkiness of the grooves underlying these tracks, and, yes, I'll readily admit I enjoy hearing a rapper lay down his words in French...a language in which I know maybe a dozen words, mostly all menu items, and none of which I recognize in this album because it's (a) too fast and (b) highly unlikely he's rapping about a ham and cheese sandwich. All in all, this is great, though. Really fun!
There's something undeniably cool about this album. It kind of sounds like it belongs in a 90s perfume commercial. And I mean that in the best way possible. I don't really understand much beyond the titles so I can't really give it a rave review, but a solid three.
Well produced, brilliant flow and feel to the rapping, but as it's mostly in French it's hard to get fully onboard
the beats were all sick at but tbh i didn’t love many songs individually (except armand est mort) and a lot of the lyrics felt cheesy/forced, the rhyming was just so kids book-y, and maybe i would enjoy it more if i didn’t speak french. solid 3
French rap. Decent sound, but it’s tough to appreciate rap in a foreign language.
Jazzy melodies and smooth voice delivery but impossible for me to connect lyrically. Some tunes got me interested but others just passed and didn't provoke any emotions at all. Torn between 2 and 3 stars.
Good beats and a cool voice. Although not my cup of tea, was a pleasant experience.
A French rapper? Very interesting, and that 90’s hip hop vibe was great as well. Nothing stood out but it was fun rocking to this in the AM.
Hip hop francés
Listened through first couple tracks while setting up recording session. Not bad, I liked the instrumentals of the tracks and the overall vibe
Geen idee waar hij het over heeft, maar behoorlijk goede beats!
Dat was helemaal niet verkeerd! En de Franse taal leent zich ook goed voor dit soort rap.
Leuk dat het Franstalig is.
Very retro beats
It might be all gibberish, but I really liked the rhymes and rhythms.
Cool french rap music with chill vibes.
Funky French good time
This was nice to see a French artist, they were pretty solid too
Sorry I am dumb American
A lot cooler than I expected. It was very fun. I don't love hip-hop so it isn't that much of my thing. If I knew how to speak french it might be more interesting.
Not bad..pretty boring though
Had never heard of this but pleasantly surprised. The title track is great and reminds me of Gang Starr. Most of the tracks throughout the middle just didn't do anything for me -- I'm sure the fact that I don't understand French is a big factor there. Bouge de la - Part 1 has some interesting flows but Part 2 is over pretty much the same beat and really drags. The two closing tracks are refreshingly good though. 71/100 gecs
This was a very interesting listen. I did find myself enjoying it, but there's something about foreign rap that just doesn't really do it for me. Not understanding anything being said certainly contributes. That being said, it's still high quality and I can't justify anything lower than 3 stars.
Nice....wish I spoke french
3/5 Enjoyable record. Don't understand a lick of French which makes reviewing It harder but the flow sounded good and the beats were pretty smooth, good feelings. Favourite track Victime de la mode.
I like the name. Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo. Makes me think im getting french jazz. so far so good.hes very straight but im sure he's good? maybe not for me though. 3?
Smooth, but my French isn't up to the task.
Pleasant to listen to - the rhythm of the words was very soothing
Smooth, funky, sophisticated in both flow and production. Exquisite sample choice. This has dated really well (although I suspect the French rapping covers any lyrical deficiencies). Pleasant and laid back without being wallpaper. I regularly play the 12" of the title track in my DJ sets, and the album stands up similarly well, with the exception of Ragga Jam, which is the fly in the ointment of this album.
Fun hip hop, very 90s feel there should be big neon words flashing up accompanying the video
Neutral eating, probably not bad, but I don't know french
Yeah I could get into this. Three and a half really.
I can understand including this as an essential listen for what kickstarts the popularity of rap music in France. I do like the boom bap beeps and MC Solaar as an rapper sounds really good on the mic and has nice flows. Like many English speakers, I do not understand what's being said and feel like translating it will remove many play on words and rhyming schemes. As such, I can't rate than higher than a 3.
3.7 - When I was studying abroad in Paris in 2000, this fusion of jazz and rap was still very much in vogue at the jazz venues, which is probably a testament to the influence and staying power of this album. It sounds like "The Low End Theory" with a softer and more funk-forward feel. Standouts: "Quartier Nord", "Ragga Jam."
If yoy take away the French, this is my preferred style of rap: a pleasant voice with some upbeat, funky backing music.
Thought it was kind of cool at first, but then it seemed to go on forever, long after I was sick of it.
Quite enjoyable. Although i couldn’t understand what he was saying (but, given the pleasant tones, it probably wasn’t about shoving a Glock in some dudes face and/or aggressively having sex) the beats where solid.
This was kinda fun! I liked a lot of it, it had some good rhythms and beats and was just nice to listen to.
Pleasant to listen to.
Fav song: Que seme le vent recolte le tempo
Very pleasant French hip-hop, you hardly notice that you have listened to a complete album. (6/10) FT: Caroline
Listened to on 4/27/22 2.5/5 Favorite song: alright, sitting up straight This album didn’t have an established vibe which made me like it less (very chaotic songs and then a few solid bops) but would listen to again
This was a bit of fun. Only understood a few words here and there but that's ok. A bit long at almost an hour, a bit samey as well, but not an unpleasant listen. 3/5.
An album of rapping in French made it to the 1001. Who knew? I don't understand the lyrics but I doubt they are a translation of "bitch", "ho" and the N word. It sounds a tad more sophisticated. There is also a jazzy sound to some of the songs that makes it cool and and Ragga Jam sounds like Eek-A-Mouse. Remember him? This is enough to get it to at least a 3.
Smooth vocals with some fine beats. I never cease to be amazed by how many people dismiss a musician just because they don’t understand the lyrics. I guess these ppl also don’t listen to any instrumental music or watch films with subtitles either. Their loss.
MC Solaar and the music from Qui Sème Le Vent Récolte Le Tempo were new to me. There is almost no Rap in what I generally listen to, so any rap artist has some work to do to keep my attention. I listened and finished the album curious about the artist and his music. The music was at least okay. I only found two or three tracks (out of 16) that I was tempted to skip. Solaar is skillful, and I understand enough French to see at least a hint of some humor and cleverness in his lyrics. I'm torn between 3 and 4 stars.
90's french hip hop with crossover appeal into Africa. Super cool and smooth beats with an MC who can do them justice. Even if I don't understand the lyrics, I can appreciate the personality that MC Solaar brings to the table. I wish it were a bit shorter though.
I suppose there is nothing necessarily about Hip Hop that requires you to be tough. But, it does at least seem generally expected. There is ... nothing... tough about French. No matter how badass you might be, you sound like you're picking flowers and painting landscapes. It's impossible to be intimidating. Musically this was solid for a rap album. Production was great, it sounded nice. But it's french rap. I'm sorry. Hard ceiling. 3-stars.
French rap... Who knew? Softer than urban American rap. If I understood the words I could learn to like it more
Pretty smooth and enjoyable, some digable planets and tribe vibes.
If Young MC sang in a foreign language, this album would be him.
Great from what I listened to. I like the beats.
I don’t speak French but had a solid sound to him.
Usually with rap it's important to understand the lyrics. I speak a little French but the lyrics were going by too fast for me to understand what he was saying. With those caveats, this might have been good if I understood French better but from my perspective the beats and flow were good but it got a little repetitive after a while.
Didn’t understand a word of it but still, not bad
Ok
First time I've listened to French hip-hop, and this was dope as hell.
Well this was an interesting sojourn into the world acid-jazz-rap francaise. I speak some French so I could understand alot of the lyrical contente and for those who don't speak French, let me say you're not missing much. MC Solaar does not have a lot to say. Having said that I really enjoyed this album. Whether or not you understand what he's rapping about, one can easily appreciate the flow of the phrasing and especially the perfect marriage of that slow sensual lyrical flow and the sultry jazzy flourishes. The music and the singer in perfect synch, make this a satisfying listen. 3.5 🌟
This is pretty good. Wish I understood French. I imagine it'd probably score much higher if I did. Definitely return to listen.
3/5
I'm not a rap person and my years of French from high school are in the past. I enjoyed the beats of this and while I could understand parts of it, I feel I'm really missing the meaning. The music was a great mix of jazz and African-inspired stuff and I liked it. Very fun to listen to. 3.5/5
Nice and chill
Neat beats brah. To a non French-speaker it seems very repetitive, although I imagine much of the appeal is the lyrics. Good soundscapes underneath just a bit flat overall.
French rap. Kind of interesting.
There's no denying the man has talent, but I don't think there's much here for the English-speaking listener. Decent beats, but nothing exceptional.
Bra fransk hiphop!
Not being able to speak French really brought this down a level for me- but the music was very interesting and kept me invested through most of it. Nice jazz and Afrobeat rhythms. Fave tracks: “Matiere Grasse Contre” (apparently translates as Fat vs Fat “Funky Dreamer”
Mid 90s rap in 1994. Maybe better if you speak French
Best French rap album I’ve ever heard. Actually the only French rap album I’ve ever heard. Not really my thing but I sort of enjoyed it. Very listenable. 3 stars.
Great sound, but I don’t understand French so I don’t feel like I can properly rate it.
1.5 Idk man just sounded like mediocre 90s rap but it was in French this time. Okay production I guess?
war mir bisschen viel durcheinander. zu Beginn entspannt und ganz ok, dann aber zu hektisch gegen Ende.
It's interesting hearing Rap in French, but I still don't like Rap. 2 stars or D+.
Don't care for french, don't care for rap, don't care for french rap
DESESPERANTE EN ALGUNAS CANCIONES
5/10
Can't decide if I like or dislike French rap more than normal rap....
Sure, it does sound a little more smooth in French. And musically it wasn't bad. But I just didn't vibe with this at all.
Better than the usual rap music on here. Good variety across the album, although I didn’t care too much for the Crazy Frog style rapper on one of the tracks. The real bonus was not being able to understand what he was on about. I don’t understand much about the usual US/UK rubbish, but the bits I do understand are pretty offensive. This dude seemed less angry with life, and the bits in English backed up this assumption.
French Rap is much better than UK or US Rap for one reason. I didn't understand what he was going on about. I found no discernible use of the 'N' word or 'bitches', I think I made out the word 'pussy', but he could have been referring to his cat. Musically it was all over the place, euro pop, vaudeville and big bass tunes. They were perfect for whatever he was rapping or chatting about, if he was indeed referring to his favourite pet.
I really enjoyed Ragga Jam but apart from that this one didn’t do anything for me. It became background noise by the halfway point.
Not as bad as one might expect
Didn't really do much for me
I'm totally down for music that's not in English, but it's a bit of a head-scratcher to try and absorb hip hop, a genre centered around the use of language specifically, in French. I don't speak French.
Eh.. Really well made album, but didn't really interest me. I know it's an ignorant excuse but if I understood the lyrics maybe it would have got an extra star.
French hip hop that's kind of jazzy? This is simply an unwarranted personal attack.
Cool, just wish I knew what he was saying
Apart from the novelty (to me) of French language rapping, I don't really see any attraction to yet another rap album on this list.
Good beats. Voice is decent. But can’t do the French rap.
This is quite bad. The vocal delivery is about as monotonous as you can get, and the instrumentals only sometimes make up for it. Matière grasse contre matière grise is the first vaguely listenable track, but it's by no means good. The brass fills stink of having been looped, which really takes all the soul out of them. A couple of bars of bass guitar near the end signal a slight improvement, but then they also sound a bit loop-esque. Other bad tracks include Ragga Jam (just kind of overwhelmingly focused on the shouty vocals which don't achieve any emotions other than drunk and haughty. And that fast vocal might be the most irritated I've ever been listening to anything ever), Quartier nord, À temps partiel, La devise, and the intro track. But when the good tracks hit, they hit hard. Victime de la mode... even if the melody consists of (essentially) two notes, man, having any sort of melody at all marks such a huge improvement. I might even say I like this song. The "DJ SFX" – something used heavily in Tetra (C2C), a fantastic album in comparison – are something I appreciate very much, particularly in a non-hip-hop context. L'histoire de l'art and Armand est mort continue the streak of relatively good songs, largely due to having pronounced and well-played instrumentals that aren't too overproduced. It's kind of staggering just how much better Caroline is than any of the previous songs. Those light strings, singing soundbites, and low-pitched lead vocal that doesn't intrude on the other instruments... It's no wonder that, judging by Spotify streaming numbers, fans prefer this song to all others on the album. Bouge de là - Part. 1 is much the same, along with the oddly soulful, jazzy La musique adoucit les mœurs. Unfortunately, though, the sheer amount of unlistenable runtime makes this album slightly irredeemable. I'll give it a charitable 2, but a 1-star rating isn't out of the question. The sheer number of 5-star ratings here is a bit mind-boggling, though. 2/5 Key tracks: Caroline, La musique adoucit les mœurs, Bouge de là - Part. 1
Maso
Quite inoffensive, jazzy french rap background music. Didn't blow me away, an easy quiet listen. Won't be back.
Not sure about this. Obviously the language barrier doesn't help, although I did recognise some words! It felt dated and the flow fairly simple. Not terrible though. Won't be back but didn't mind it 2.5
Eh
Bouge de La - Part 1
Musically sometimes quite interesting, but it's still hiphop
weird so fun, but not good
Have never heard of this artist.. I generally don't "get" lots of rap music. Given that this is in French I get it even less. The songs have a good beat that I can bop my head to - but I don't know what else to take from this. Maybe it has some amazing lyrics that would make me think or feel something - but I can't tell. The saxophone on the 2nd song was a different touch. I don't think I need to hear most of this again - but I did end up liking 4 songs on Spotify since they have a good vibe - "Que seme le vent recolte le tempo", "Victim de la mode", "Caroline", "Bouge de la - Part 1". Liked songs on Spotify: 4/16 Rating: 2/5
Not into rap or French, but otherwise it had some moments
Idk how to say this
🤷🏿♀️ it’s something different-but ehh
More 90s rap. No thanks.
Mix of jazz and funk rhythms with plenty of rap in French which is a bit easier on the ear, juste un petit peu.
mbah oltre al francese non ha niente di diverso da tanti altri album del tempo
Some pretty run of the mill early 90s beats and hooks; not sure what the draw is here. Tres meh!
Ew. (capitalised in order to express my extreme capital-D Disgust.) my back to school day are ruined by these cheese eating surrender monkeys. anyway: sick beat, terrible rapping cause its French. and all french music that is NOT daft punk Annoys me. 2/5
Took me back to the time I bought that album.on tape. I'm glad to say I aged way better.
French Rap???????
# Album Name: Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo # Artist: MC Solaar # Rating: 2/5 # Comments: Its a hell naw from me. This aint no Justice. # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
Achingly trendy at the time. Hasn't aged so well. One to file in the why rather than the why not files
instantly forgettable
my high school French teacher was a fan of MC Solaar. Probably because his pronunciation is good. It's too bad I can't appreciate the wordplay. There isn't much else of interest. Hasn't aged too well
This didn't do much for me at all. Production was occasionally OK and occasionally slightly janky sounding. Not bad but I'm being slightly more harsh on here because most of the stuff is good for some reason. My 2 is like an "Ehhhhh."
Cool. 90s French rap
Mmmm….. can’t see why it’s in the list. Melodic 90s rap. Pleasant but wall paper
Very difficult to rate as the genre as a whole is not my jam. The lack of musical development during most of the tracks gets boring to me and the albums runtime does not help. Reminds me of ps1/ps2 skateboarding games (positive) Beats are good though and I can see the vision but had to take a star off for Ragga Jam. Fav song: Caroline
So very boring.
This one didn't get me into French rap, sorry to say. A few decent beats though. 4/10
I do not speak french which limits experience.
smooth, stylish, silky production, flows that show the US how it’s done. I think the fact this is in French covers over some of the lyrics problems I can have with hip hop, but judging by the advanced grammar in song titles that wouldn’t be the case anyway. This genre doesn’t do much for me though
Not really for me
Saved 1 song. Couldn't listen to it all, but I sounded super cool. I feel like the songs would be better for me if I knew French.
Rap, men märkligt nog med tanke på franskan och att jag knappt begriper ett ord, så är det bra för att vara rap. En tvåa
honestly thought it would be worse
I did really like some of the beats here. I found it hard to rate this album with some of the others due to it all being in French, so I don’t understand the lyrics. But I did find the Reggae song quite annoying. Overall, wasn’t a huge fan, but there were a couple songs that shone through.
Il aurait été préférable que je comprenne le français.
L'enemy publique? I can't claim great familiarity with hip hop, but this felt decent if sort of rudimentary.
Remember Us3? They made "Cantaloop (Flip Fantasia)," a bebop-inspired pop-rap song that became a modest hit in the early '90s. I completely forgot about them until today. Turns out they have ten albums! And they were an early signee of Ninja Tune, one of the labels most responsible for my taste in music circa late 90s/early 2000s. Probably not a great sign that I spent a lot of this album reading up on the whereabouts of a completely different band. This barely held my attention, and I'm always up for non-English-language albums. I have no idea how someone could consider this essential, let alone enough people to vote it onto a list like this.
Hip hop lives and dies for me by two things - the lyrics and the artist’s flow. Unfortunately, I don’t speak French, and his rap skills were fine but nothing special. Do I believe he’s the best rapper in France? I have no doubt. But this didn’t transcend for me. There are definitely cases where me not understanding the lyrics doesn’t matter, but it’s such a fundamental part of hip hop that I feel like I’m missing out. I don’t think this is bad in any way, but there were unfortunately too many barriers for me to really enjoy it either.
Some great songs but found this hard to listen to. Language barriers are kind of hard for me to get into.
I'm not a huge french rap fan but it sounds cool I guess?
Irie mon.
I don't think I like hip hop the way the rest of the world does.
Nope.
Was kind of fun to be able to decipher like six of these words. Otherwise, very hard pass
My knowledge of French music starts and stops with Flight of the Conchords' Foux Da Fa Fa...and I enjoy that song much more than any on this album. I mean, it is fine, just didn't stand out to me in any way. 2.25/5
not in english so kind of hard to appreciate
French, so that's a point lost there. I don't mind the beat and the pace but with out having any idea what he is saying it might as well be someone huming.
Ganske chill, men tvile på at eg komme til å setta da på igjen
Album 924 of 1089 MC Solaar - Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo (1991) Rating : 2 / 5 Today’s album was Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo by MC Solaar. Hip hop isn’t really my thing to begin with - and hip hop in French takes it even further outside my comfort zone. That said, I gave it an honest listen. I can appreciate the flow and rhythm, even if I couldn’t connect much with the lyrics. There’s a smoothness to Solaar’s delivery that stands out, and the production has that early ’90s laid-back vibe that’s easy enough on the ears. Still, it didn’t leave much of a lasting impression on me. Not bad, not great - just one of those albums that’s more interesting to experience than to revisit.
Nope.
Very French.
Franse Rap, redelijk
Hip hop is hard to rate generally because it feels out of date almost as soon as it comes out. Add that this is on French I don't even really know if he has a good flow as French generally has a good flow spoken. There are places where the music wouldn't sound out of place in sesame street, but I think it's pretty sexual so I don't know. For 1992 this is pretty advanced. Its good until you hit that reggae song. It was so so very bad.
No. More. Rap.
This was just plain weird. Why would I ever listen to this? Nothing wrong with it but I could go without forever.
Interessante, ripetitivo come il genere richiede
Sounds a little like a poor man’s French Rakim. Apparently the French were a few years behind in hip hop production as these beats sound like the late 80s rather than the 90s. Kinda hard to appreciate without understanding the lyrics but he seems to have a pretty good flow.
2.5 I learned a lot of words in French, rhyme with tempo. Solid but I will never listen to it again
Hard to get into a rap album when I have no idea what they’re saying…
French, listened to first few songs
Was meh
It’s French rap, not my favorite but interesting.
Exactly what you expect from someone called mc solaar. This requires too much effort for me. I find rap already mentally taxing, let alone in a language where I have to carefully listen to understand it. It also doesn't help that certain lyrics have either no meaning/ are metaphorical.
respect ei ollut englantia
Jazzy tone was good, didn't love the rapping and of course my French is too limited to understand the lyrics. Wouldn't put this on myself but wasn't offended by it either.
solid album, nothing special tho
Not really my genre. Was ok to listen to but wouldn’t listen again.
To me it just sounds pretty generic and didn't speak to me at all. I thought it was pretty boring
It's an alright album. Some of the beats are nice with brass instruments mixed in. The lyrics are, I think, in French so I didn't really understand them but seemed like he has nice flow. Nothing really jumped out at me but I didn't hate it either. Would be nice to put a couple of these songs on a party mix to add some variety to the playlist.
2.5 - Meh
Sacre bleu
Enjoyed this, a bit different. High 2s
ChatGPT said: This one didn’t really land for me. I can totally see how it’s an important and influential album, and I did find the flow of MC Solaar’s delivery pretty smooth in places. His voice is likeable, and the French language gives it a certain elegance that makes even the sharper lyrics feel a bit softer. But I just didn’t connect with the beats much—most of them felt dated in a way that didn’t hold any charm for me, just a bit flat and repetitive. There’s an old-school vibe here for sure, but not one I was excited to revisit. I respect what this album did for French hip-hop, but personally, I found myself checking how many tracks were left more than once. A few songs like “Caroline” and “Victime de la mode” did have more energy, and I appreciated the clever wordplay in moments. Still, overall it felt like a museum piece—interesting, but not something I’d go back to.
Listened a couple of songs. Wasn't really in the mood for French old rap. It's funny how the flow is the same independent of the language.
1.5. It's French and it was just kind of interesting. Too long as well
This probably deserves a higher rating and I should revisit it at some point, but not speaking French makes it hard to appreciate a rap album in French
I’ve never heard of MC Solaar or this album before, but I’ve enjoyed a decent amount of hip-hop from the nineties that I’ve reviewed so far. Granted, I can’t say I’ve ever listened to a French hip-hop album before, so I really have no idea what I’m in for on this album. Let’s fire it up! This album left a little to be desired in my opinion. The brightest spot on this album was MC Solaar’s rapping. His skills with language kicked down any language barriers, and I thought he had a really good flow to his rapping. He cloud keep things simple and laid back, but he could also rap with speed and precision. I don’t know French, but it’s cool that his rapping still has a style that’s so clean that I can pick up on his rhythms and the way he enunciated words and syllables. Musically, this album was fine, but it didn’t really pull me in. The backing beats were relaxed and simple, which allowed the lyrics and rapping to do the heavy lifting, but it came at the expense of creating a sound that just plodded along in my opinion. The only song that really stood out to me was “Caroline.” I really liked the strings that were used in the backing music, and the song had a really haunting and beautiful sound. While I appreciate being able to branch out and listen to something different, this album just wasn’t for me.
Hearing all the classic 90s tropes in this album and thst isn’t a bad thing. Favorite track: bouge de la other picks: matiere grasse, caroline, ragga jam
ну во-первых музло состарилось конечно, во-вторых данный уголек читает круть с интонацией, которая в сон отправляет
fine
Def funky but not rly my vibe. I saved a few songs but it mostly felt one-note. Could def be because I don’t understand French and this is the type of rap where the lyrics/poetry is rly important.
Not my thing
Fr*nch-language rapping over canned 90s beats. Yawn
The Good: We’ve got prophecy! The Bad: Looking at the artist is like looking at the sun… The Ugly: it is rap… Even in French rap remains rap… I mean crap… However, holy crap towards the end, Ragga Jam… that was amazing, and I will dish out an additional star just for that. 2*
I felt personally insulted by "Ragga Jam"
I'm sure it's great when you can understand it, but I can't.
I dunno. I don’t speak French. Probably sucks
Rap music is so much better when you cant understand the lyrics.
This might have been more interesting if I understood any of the wordplay going on, but musically this just isn't interesting. 2
It's hard appreciate HipHop which is explicitly lyric-driven in a language you don't understand.
French rap / hip hop / popular music.
You know when you really want to like something, and work hard at liking it, but just can’t? Yeah. That. For a long time, I thought I simply had a bias against Rap Not In The English Language. But it occurred to me that the best rappers, most rappers, use their voices as an instrument for conveying emotion and passion, one way or the other. Solaar’s delivery is as flat as a pancake.
It’s better than I expected it to be, but my expectations of French hip-hop were benthonically low.
Quite a cool groove and still sounding surprisingly fresh considering how hip-hop sounded generally in 1990. I have always liked how rap sounds in French, the flowing nature of the language suits flowing verse. The problem is, despite the best efforts Miss Onslow, I don't speak French. I feel like understanding the lyricism is 80% of all rap music. My typical British ignorance of foreign language limits this to a 2 star album for me, I'm afraid.
The positive is that I don't understand rappers, so the foreign language is no problem. His voice sounds better, that French accent is always a bonus. But it's still just someone talking over a repetitive (so bloody repetitive) groove. Instead of saying nope, I'll say non.
Difficult to get through
This basically sounds like French Tricky to me. Admittedly I quite like Tricky and the beats/production here are pretty cool. As entertaining as it was trying to pick some meaning out of the 20% or so of the words I understood (baby, baby, strawberry, raspberry, music…) my bigger issue was that it didn’t really shift in tone, tempo or mood for most of its hour-long runtime. So I can’t see myself coming back to it again anytime soon.
Not memorable honestly
Pretty boring listen. It's just standard French rap music. Nothing really interesting going on. Bit boring. He started doing something interesting with sampling some more interesting other music, and I can see why it is by far the most listened to track on the album. Other than that entirely boring, not sure it deserves to be on this list.
I found this album monotonous in the sense that all the songs kinda blended together. Not terrible but boring and bland, I will probably not listen to this again.
This is the first album I've gotten that I probably wouldn't have eventually sought out on my own time, and I know many more will follow. (I'm actually shocked I got 6 rock albums in a row). For my first foray into hip-hop, this is pretty good; better than I was expecting. This album is jazz-rap, and it's from 1991, back when music was higher quality in general (in my opinion). I am not a rap fan, I tend to find it boring musically, and the sometimes really good lyrics don't save bad music. However, the thing about this album is that I quite enjoy the beats and jazz in the background, and I also don't understand a damn thing MC Solaar is saying because he's rapping in French. I think his flow is pretty good, although, as with a lot of rap for me, I tend to zone out and not let the music sink in, although if it has a good instrumental in the background I can stay engaged. I do notice a few kind of cheesy things going on in the background that I don't want to assume are '90s rap tropes, but kind of think are based on what I know (but I'm not a rap music expert so take that with a grain of salt). Overall, this was better than I was expecting, and I actually enjoyed the listen a little. Favorite Song: La musique adoucit les mœurs Lest Favorite Song: Ragga Jam
I hate to rate it low because I don’t understand French, but I am.
I can't really listen to foreign language rap but it sounds like it would be decent for a native speaker.
1.5
Not my thing. I didn't really care for it. 2/5
Perhaps once upon a time the novelty of hearing rap in a language other than English would've been enough to give it a certain degree of cultural cache. But times change - monocultures are loosening and the exchange of musical ideas via the internet is now so total that I'd not raise an eyebrow if I was proffered a rap album in Inuktitut. So where does this leave 'Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo'? As a pleasant, if somewhat anonymous, relic of the early 1990s. French language aside, it'd be indistinguishable from any of the slightly funky pre-gangsta rap of the era. I can't comment further - rap is a genre that relies heavily on wordplay, and I don't speak French (plus we did a Brexit in response to this kind of thing). Many of its charms remain hidden to me.
I tried listening three times and finally made it through!
All right. Good feel and it wasn’t boring. Started experiencing Album Fatigue about half way through.
Good beat and probably makes more sense if you speak french.
Better options than this IMO
Nothing special, just french
Not bad
Personally, I have a hard time listening to music in alternative languages simply because I feel like I need to understand the lyrics to truly feel, and enjoy a song. However, I really enjoyed the beats, and would not put down the album in any means.
I’m not a fan of rap music, but this was better than most.
This was hard to pay attention to. Every 50th word something sounded like English. Music/beats were on but not stellar.
Meh
Traen buen groove pero pense que seguia escuchando el album y era una recomended song
Nah
I'm not really sure what to do with this one. Interesting beats and samples but hip hop is often times make or break on the lyrical content. I don't speak a lick of French so this might as well be gibberish.
At least, now I know a French rapper by name.
Ok background music while I got some work done. 2/5
It would have been more enjoyable if it wasn't performed in French.
Kinda tough to evaluate this with only a rudimentary understanding of French.
Not a fan of French music
Beats seem cool, but I do not understand a single word.
Le Prince Frais de Bel Air
I have no interest in this at all. It's not horrible, it just means nothing to me.
Musically good, but not going to sit through a whole album that is in a different language I don't understand
The French language seems to suit this style of music, not sure where/when I’d want to be listening to this album though.
⭐⭐/5
Uh..............
The beats are good but the lyrics in French just pull me out of it.
>Ce monde caca-pipi-caca-pipitaliste Couldn't have said it better myself, comrade It was fun for like 4 songs but this seems to be my limit for french hip-hop. Not as bad as I thought it would be though, at the very least he has a good taste in beats
3.44 rym non il mio ma meglio di altro 2/5
Not for me I’m aftraid.
I understand that this album was essential in the evolution of hip hop but I just didn’t like it that much. The beats were a bit stale and unfortunately the lack of French trains I have did not get the message he was trying to convey.
It has potential but I just can’t get into French rap
I can’t speak French, so I’ll let the funky music do the talking. It’s saying: «Arrête de m’écouter! Je suis ennuyeux!»
Some interesting bits of music. However couldn't understand any of the lyrics so can only give a max of 3 stars, and it let it self down by starting and ending with an instrumental track
# 239 : Still along way to go : I don't love it. I don't hate it, I can't understand it, and it's not particularly exciting. It doesn't have anything catchy enough to make me want to give it a second listen. Yawn, like I literally fell asleep part way through!
May have been better if I knew what he was saying.
This is fine (probably even good) for what it is. Impressed by the speed with which syllables were spit out, and for something from 1991 it's perfectly fine musically. That said, this falls into the "I'm glad to have heard it but I'll never listen to it again" bucket.
i like the samples and beats, it's hard to appreciate rap in different languages because i don't understand the word flow and nuances that come with hip hop
I would like this more if I spoke French
Never has my 3 years of high school French felt so useless.
Too much MC Tunes in French
kinda interesting but it's in French
Pretty cool listening to rap in French. A little bit to jazz for me.
I'm sure I'd appreciate it more if I spoke french
Not really my thing. I don’t speak French, so lyrics completely lost to me. Some good jazzy funky bits.
There were elements of the songs I enjoyed.
The language is a barrier, not as terrible as expected. "La musique adoucit les moeurs" was catchy.
Not for me 4/10
My Francophile lady was like "I'm surprised you've never heard of this guy". I'm sorry I'm not up on my early 90's French hip hop...
Hard to jam out to a rap song you don't understand the words for
Being born and raised in France, I *obviously* know who that rapper is. *Everyone* in France knows him. "Bouge de là" is a seminal track for French hip hop (anything *famous* labelled as "rap" that had been issued before was just pure garbage). Just so you English-speaking friends know, that single was a *huge* commercial success, and as gimmicky as it was, it's still kinda cool to listen to today. "Bouge de là" was actually the track that opened the door to the whole universe of hip hop for many French middle-school kids at the time--and, just like the three or four highlights of this record, it was still a *legit* attempt to translate the genre into our own language. Other notable French pioneers in said genre were NTM, IAM, Assassin, Ministère AMER, but as notable as those acts were, few of them had the potential of MC Solaar's music when it comes to international success (minus a couple of records by IAM and NTM, maybe...). That said, Solaar (also known as Claude M'Barali) was not only a whizz kid because of the music he rapped on--he also had a very distinct style, actually quite soft-spoken compared to the acts I've quoted up there, but equally impressive when it comes to flow and word play. The latter is actually a trademark aspect of Solaar's lyrics--the man uses so many puns it becomes dizzying to track them all, to the point where he was sometimes derided because of this--but fortunately, also lauded by everyone who was less obsessed with a supposed "hardcore" posturing in the genre (including old-timers who came from the "chansons" *milieu*). Released not long after single "Bouge de là" (and including it), *Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo* was thus the confirmation that MC Solaar and his producers had the right references to emulate important US hip hop acts in a way that would make sense in France. In its best moments, you can hear obvious whiffs of the Native Tongues collective (De La Soul, Jungle Brothers, ATCQ...) or Public Enemy's Bomb Squad production team. Those important moments are for instance the *stellar* and lively title-track, using the best that De La Soul and the Pharcyde had to offer at the time, or hit singles "Caroline" and "Victime de la mode"--the first about one unrequited love interest, very much a ditty, and yet transcended by its lush, emotive strings loops ; and the second, about a shallow female character only caring about external appearances, much more tongue-in-cheek in nature. And there's also the ominous "Armand est mort", using an effective sample of Marvin Gaye's *What's Going On* to narrate the death of a bum and how he ended up in such dire straits. The rest is a little hit or miss, though, and not every track has aged gracefully here. Sophomore album *Prose Combat* was actually a far stronger and more cohesive effort than this debut. And it had gems such as "Obsolète" "La concubine de l'hémoglobine" and "Western Moderne"--famous for its killer sample of Serge Gainsbourg and Brigitte Bardot's "Bonnie And Clyde". So I'm not including MC Solaar's debut in my own list, because it was certainly not the *best* album the man has ever released--even if it struck French minds at the time. But for the second album *Prose Combat*, let's just say that the jury's still out on this one. 2.5/5 for the purposes of this list, rounded up to 3. Which translates to a 7.5/10 grade for more general purposes (5+2.5). Number of albums left to review: 264 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 323 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 182 Albums from the list I won't include in mine (many other records are more important to me): 237 (including this one)
Merci, mais non.
French rap: if this were in English instead of French, I might have understood more of it, but I probably wouldn't have liked it any better.
This was great to listen to while I was cooking last night. It's in French so I don't understand it but it sounded very nice.
Didn’t care so much for this.
Sounded like an average hip hop album from 1991 but in French.
Ganske chill, men tvile på at eg komme til å setta da på igjen
Today I learned I don't like French rap music either. Mind you, it was better than most of the English speaking rap served to me over here.
I wanted this to be better. I love the flow but the beats are all the same. It's kind of monotonous after the first three tracks. The rapping sounds super solid and I love hearing it in French. I just with the music itself had some variation.
French rap. Not my thing though it has a good beat but don't know what he's rapping about
Don't speak French...Sounds pretty good though. That's all I've got to say about this douche. Douche is a French word.
Soo honestly for music in a different language it wasn’t all that bad however, I do have to take away a good amount because I couldn’t really form a connection with this music. I’m not saying it necessarily has to be in English because I do like the variety and the diverse language, however, I’m not sure the importance of this album it just seemed very similar and itself and to other music that I’ve heard.
I like the funky instrumentals and that he uses real instruments to back up his hip hop lyrics. Problem is that it's in French so I didn't understand a thing 2.4
Just couldn't get into this at all
Lidt for rappet
Iets te druk voor mijn smaak. Erg chaotisch ook
Couldn't understand it, but I liked the music and the vibe.
It had something but it didn't engage with me fully. Didn't finish listening.
cant give it a better rating when i don’t understand anything
Qui sème le vent récolte le tempo // Victime de la mode // Caroline // 2.5/5
Obviously don’t know most of the lyrics but the guy has good flow. His voice and the music are a little too soft and clean though. Has the same Euro dance beat that the Soul II Soul album on this list has. I wish it hit harder.
Nice beats but I don't understand the words!
French rap? Sure.
Ummm....French rap??
Honestly sounds very generic, just in french
Repetitief en ik kan geen Frans. Waarom staat dit op de lijst?
I don't know French
Can’t get into a French rap album unfortunately
Meh
Novel. French rap is weird.
Nah. Ragga Jam was a good track though. It is going into my "Weird French dudes doing reggae scating".
This was kinda fun. Nothing earth-shattering.
Det var fint nok, men gjorde ikke specielt indtryk.
Sounds pretty decent, too bad it's fr*nch
Good flow and decent backing tracks.
Cool beats, but all in French
