Reviews (page 8 of 14)
On first listen, I was pretty lukewarm on this album, and I felt like little about it really stood out beyond the hits I already knew. I'm skimming through it a second time and finding a lot more to enjoy. I'm picking up on more of the punk elements the second time, and I think that gives it a new flavor that adds a lot. I don't love everything about it, but it's generally well-made, diverse, and doesn't overstay. 8/10. Favorite Songs: One Way Or Another, Fade Away And Radiate, 11:59, Heart Of Glass Least Favorite Songs: Pretty Baby, I Know But I Don't Know
A wonderful, fun pop rock album. A punky sensibility is present in most songs, and of course there's the Disco tinged classic Heart of Glass. All the songs on the album are really solid but Fade Away and Radiate is my favorite of the new discoveries. Heart of Glass remains my favorite, but I'm Gonna Love You Too has me grinning from ear to ear.
I liked this album. Debby Harry has a great voice and I love the expressiveness in her singing. The album is mostly pop rock, but there's still a little bit of edgy punk sound. Fun to hear so many new to me songs beyond the 2 well known tracks. I couldn't help hearing Courtney Love at the beginning of Pretty Baby and wonder if there was some influence there.
I had never really heard a full Blondie album before and it's a bit what I imagined it would be like. Some cool stuff here and I would totally buy an album and stick it in my collection--and is Heart of Glass one of the best songs ever?
Such an energic opening with 1st title... It is now a very good choice while I am streaming some games via Twitch =)
This is a very fresh sounding, creative album, sounds like late 70s early 80s new-wave punkish music but also holds up really well.
What a banger. 4/5
Great stuff! Packed full of bangers, including the songs that maybe aren't as well known nowadays. In particular, Picture This was a song I didn't really know that was very, very good. The power in the vocals on songs like Hanging on the Telephone is great.
Opener is great and "Heart of Glass" is a top 5 disco tune of all time. "One Way or Another" is sexier than one recalls, if not entirely convincing. "Sunday Girl" is sneaky fun. The balance ranges from meh to okay to fine. Production is notably clean. As a vocalist, Harry peaks at very good and is somewhat inconsistent; the voice is quality, the delivery not always top-line. Seems easy to say now but they never felt all that punk and wanted to be more than pop (which was probably their strength). Maybe they were vaguely mod, with the talent, fashion-sense and good fortune to nail a few catchy hits at the right time. Maybe one senses a little bit of wanting it too much – the fame and glamour.
Love Blondie! Love the album! Only a couple songs I skipped.
Heard quite a few of these songs, never realised a lot of these bangers were by Blondie, particularly all of them in one album, one or two songs I didn't fancy but a great album nonetheless.
This album is so fun! Never heard this album before but had high expectations for Blondie and she delivered. Favourite song is Heart of Glass.
Excellent album. I only knew a couple beforehand but the rest were as good as the ones I know. And heart of glass is a pop legend so im glad the album lived up to it. F.Song ofc is Heart of Glass
A classic… punk grows up, goes to the disco and gets huge.
Bueno
This is a great anytime album. Not mind blowing, but well crafted pitch perfect pop rock.
Fun, original pop punk new wave
Surprisingly good, with songs I remember my mother playing when I was a child. A happy find for sure.
Album #9 I think This was pretty rad. First time listening to a full Blondie album and I can definitely see their influence in more modern music. It especially reminded me of the Killers and that new wave resurgence that was so hot with all the NME bands from my teenage years. I probably would have loved Blondie as a teenager, and I can see myself loving them now.
This is my first Blondie album and I really enjoyed it. I'm probably right below loving it, but I really liked the songwriting, really liked the guitar work and generally liked the production. I wasn't always a huge fan of the synthesizers, but some of the more subtle effects were really cool.
fire 🔥 bangers on bangers
good hit rate of radio classics. Older songs than I would have guessed.
One of the first albums that I ever bought, given that it was recorded and produced in the late 70s it has aged pretty well although there are a couple of tracks on the album that were so so hence only four star rating
50/50 bengers and mediocre songs
Pretty solid end to end. Not a huge fan of the biggest blondie hits (maybe because I have heard them too much) but the rest of the album was of really high quality. 4/5
Very fun to listen to, great vibes
Classic, fun and witty lyrics, great singing, catchy riffs. 4/5 for now!
Enjoyable, lots of hits!
Great album, I definitely see the appeal of Blondie. I had only previously heard One Way Or Another and Heart of Glass, so it was a treat to dive deeper into the album. I wasn't quite as into the middle set of songs, but I did enjoy the listen throughout.
I wasn't able to listen to all of it as I was out of the office a lot. Quite fun. I enjoyed the 80s throwback.
The first time listening to a whole Blondie album front to back and holy cow, what a voice. Gorgeous and full, with the perfect amount of vocal fry to give it a bit of edge on a few tracks. This album would be a perfect 5/5 if all the tracks had as much pop and punch as One Way Or Another.
Best songs: Hanging on the Telephone (cover) One Way or Another Sunday Girl Heart of Glass 3.5/4
Reminiscing on The Smiths 😍
Good album
Yes
Funny that this was my album for today since I’ve been digging into Blondie’s discography lately. I’ve listened to Parallel Lines a few times, and while it gets better each time, I wish I liked some of the songs more. On the whole, I do enjoy listening to it, though I personally prefer their debut. I love Picture This and Hanging On The Telephone a lottt. Sunday Girl and Pretty Baby are also favorites. Giving it a 4, but 3.5/5 is more accurate to how I feel.
some great tracks from this under appreciated band
Well balanced and interesting listen
Perfect mix of punk energy and pop sensibility, Blondie is one of the most underrated bands of all time. Few bands were able of combining disco, punk, rock & roll, and pop melodies.
Good album, fun songs to listen to. Blonde is a category all on her own & band is great!
When the song, Heart of Glass first aired on the radio, I immediately dismissed and hate it. Generally, I disliked any disco songs and around this time in 1979, a lot of mainstream artists (Stones, Kinks, Who, Rod Stewart, Queen...) jumped on the trend and toyed with the disco beats and included at least one disco track on their albums. Listening to the entire album now, I realize there is a lot of great tracks on Parallel Lines that aren't disco and some of their best rockers they ever recorded. If you're discovering Blondie for the first time, this would be the place to start. It's by far their best album and includes most the songs you've heard before. Personally, this album and the debut are the only essential Blondie records worth listening to.
A perfect pop rock record. It's catchy, has great melodies and hooks along with some punk elements. There's no filler on the record, lots of Blondie's hits on here, and the lesser known tracks are brilliant as well. Such a fun, energetic record.
I had no idea that Modern artist have directly picked up some tracks from here. It was a fun album to listen to
Fun dreamy glam rock
This is my kind of music; really liked this album.
Well made pop rock with some absolute bangers on the track list. Feels very ahead of it's time. Favorites are Hanging on the Telephone, One Way Or Another, and Heart of Glass
Debbie Harry has these vocals that just hit with the right amount of grit and ferociousness when necessary but is also quite capable of these softer vocal timbers that makes her so engaging to listen to. Hanging on The Phone, One Way or the Other, Picture This give the impression you are going to get a straight ahead rock album but then that notion is bucked when Fade Away and Radiate come in with a much softer and darker sound to start. Fade away and Radiate is a very interesting track in that it incorporates musical stylings from a variety of different genres making it one of the most engaging tracks on the album. Pretty Baby is an ok track nothing super interesting but it is another nice change of pace that keeps you on your toes as to what to expect on the album. I Know But I Don't Know gives elements more similar to prog rock but eschews that for a more straight forward rock sound with a ripping guitar solo the Lyrics are also fairly funny to me. 11:59 throws a bit of a curve ball, you think you are getting a rock track and then transitions into an almost 50's style pop track with that characteristic swing that I associate with much of the popular music of the 50's. Will Anything Happen is a nice return to a more straightforward rock approach. Sunday Girl gives me more of 60's approach and changes the pace once again still keeping the listener on their toes Debbie Harry really shines again here on this track showing the versatility of the genres here voice fits in to. Heart of Glass adds another genre on to the pile giving more of a disco feel and again really showing off Harry's versatility. I'm gonna Love you to is one of the more forgettable tracks on the album. The album ends on an ok note. Musically Just Go Away is kind of a let down considering all the experimentation that the listener has come to expect. Vocally I feel like Just Go Away is hindered by the backing vocals from the band and might have been better service if Harry sang the back up vocals on the track. over all I enjoyed this album and will check out more of Blondies stuff.
I am always fascinated when I find an album and think «so that´s what the artist I like have been listening to». This was that kind of album. A part from some charming songs that didn't really fit up my alley, this was a brilliant listening experience that I did not expect liking as much as I did.
Always loved Blondie Perfect first album for to the project The drummer was awesome
Great album. Blondie kicks ass.
Surprisingly 50's vibes rather than what I thought it would be
Really solid album. Nicely balances between punk and pop. Even disco makes an appearance. This might have been the only album to be played at CBGBs and Studio 54. Debbie Harry can get me one way or another any time she wants.
4.5
A lot of great songs. No bad songs
Still sounds fresh and exciting. There's so much wonderful '60s pop influence in Blondie's sound, "Heart of Glass" notwithstanding. The album that made the world understand and appreciate this amazing band.
Good classic Rock album Would isten again
So packed full of bangers it's hardly worth listening to as an album since the filler is just that. And surprisingly rockabilly too. Hanging on the Telephone is the perfect pop single and the greatest cover version of all time.
Lots of records have good songs on them, not that many records have all good songs on them. It’s not all GREAT, but there’s no stinkers here. Good stuff from Blondie.
I think the non-singles are more interesting... probably because I haven't heard them a couple 1000 times. There's a lot of fun variation.
Fun, catchy, real bops, but not super inventive
I really enjoyed the mood changes of songs on this album. I would pick this up on vinyl but I would not go out of my way to pick it up. I enjoyed it but a few things could have been a little better about this album. I also really did like all of the big hits off of this album. I had no idea some of these songs that I knew came from this record.
du coup j'ai du l'écouter en boucle mais ça se laisse écouter4/5
Phenomenal release. If you like guitars and some keyboards and pretty good vocals you should check this out. There is a copy at your local vintage record shop. Might be two copies.
Moth liked it. He has nothing else to say really.
Groovy beats, fast tempo, the vocalist was doing her thing, but as songs I felt like all of them didn't land. Some good tracks and no duds, I think it could grow on me. I like the album cover. Would give a 3.5 if I could.
This kinda slaps not gonna lie 8/10
IM GONNA GETYAGETYAGETYAGETYA
What a voice!
This was fire the guitar was incredible and her vocals are great hugely underrated band So fun -B
I actually didn’t think I was gonna like it and now I’m coming back to it. This album thing has been awesome in filling in my new wave lack of knowledge.
Honestly it's way ahead its time. It is a timeless pop-punk/rock album filled with classics. But in the middle it starts to fade out a bit, but it manages to pick it up at the end with Heart of glass.
This was a good album to drive to on Saturday morning. Very enjoyable up to the end. I didn't know more songs than I knew, but it was classic Blonde.
Some bangers, some fillers, good inspiration for a punk band
Pretty decent album, only a few of the bigger hits but enjoyed a lot of the lesser known tunes on here
Another one from when I had hair
On respire un peu
Some good songs that I have never heard before, amazing the influence Blondie had on the new wave and punk genre
Solid production with good pace. A couple tracks feel out of place but very minor. Great late 70s real.
Very fun album. Just a pinch before my time, but much appreciated nonetheless.
I liked it. Good energy, nice vocals. You go girl!
Real Cool
Songs that barely go beyond 3 minutes, new wave and disco elements that are not annoying, nice voice... this is pop perfection. No wonder their hits remain popular today.
Started of really strong and some absolute bangers on here. One way or another and heart of glass. Tailed off a bit.
Fun poppy little album
Solid album. Somewhere between a 4 and 5.
Much more rock than I thought it would be!
Great album full of classic songs and hits. Even the lesser know songs are fantastic, really enjoyed this album.
Really really liked this one; so many bangers all on one album. 4.5/5
honestly i only knew blondie's hits and didnt know what to expect. i was rly into this tho!!
Classic new wave from the height of the CBGB era.
Blondie is right up my alley, and I guess this was their album that brought them mainstream success.
Some disco, some punk, some new wave. Liked this one
Classic 80s rock
Blonde is awesome
Some cool songs, need to listen more
New yoik
Did not know Blondie made One Way or Another so thats pretty cool lol
Favorites: Fade Away And Radiate,
1. "Hanging on the Telephone" (The Nerves cover) - instant like, surprisingly short for a 70s song 2. "One Way or Another" - everybody knows this one, catchy 3. "Picture This" - groovy, makes me bob my head from side to side... got kinda bored of it right before the chorus 4. "Fade Away and Radiate" - like the lyrics but a bit forgettable 5. "Pretty Baby" - fun! liked 6. "I Know but I Don't Know" - spooky i like it... male spoken vocals are funny 7. "11:59" - makes me nervous but i think that's the point, i like the instrumental a lot 8. "Will Anything Happen?" - introduction makes me think i won't like it, ended up not liking it that much 9. "Sunday Girl" - liked it from the beginning, another side-to-side head bop song 10. "Heart of Glass" - LOVEEEEE, absolutely deserves its place as a hit!! 11. "I'm Gonna Love You Too" - corny & desperate, makes me nervous 12. "Just Go Away" - love the lyrics, i like this one
One way or another and bang a gong are classics for a reason.
First song "will anything happen" sounds good
Blondie is great, and this is a great Blondie album. 4 stars.
Surprising better than expected
Phenomenal. So good together as a band and great vocals. A point off for some duff tracks in the middle.
Solid 4. Some amazing songs and some didn't feel like they belonged in the same album
Lively yet deep
Better than I expected. I knew the hits would hit but the opening track and a couple of the deep cuts are catchy. The sound isn't super unique to me but the songwriting is solid and Blondie herself (I don't know the band lore if that's how she goes by) is charismatic enough that it just works.
Fun album.
a great album, not a single song I disliked, it's truly enjoyable, fun, a pleasant discovery!
My first album from the generator. Not sure I’m gonna like this.
All of the hits on one album, I mean come on!
Klingt so sehr nach 80s obwohl es vor den achtzigern aufgenommen wurde. Ahead of its time?
Better than I expected, great album.
Packed with hit singles, this is Blondie at their best. One or two of the other numbers aren't that stand out, but overall a great album
Cool album, but not a rush to for me.
Hella cool guitars and her voice is wonderful!
You know it’s an absolute belter and Debbie Harry is an icon but I must admit it flags a bit in the middle. I’m torn. 4 stars
Another one of those albums where the singles really outshine the rest of it by a fair margin. Not to say the non-singles are bad, they're just not on that level, but the average across the whole album is pretty enjoyable. Didn't find myself waiting for it to end or getting annoyed at any songs. It's a quite fun breeze through some great pop punk and new wave.
There's really nothing here I don't like. The cover is sharp. The songs, even the filler songs, are pretty sharp. Lotta sharpness. At least four songs I love - Telephone, One Way Or Another, Sunday Girl, and Heart of Glass. It doesn't totally hold me the whole time so I can't give it 5 stars, but it's an easy 4.
Nothing here dips below "pleasant" and the highlights are legion. As a new wave / disco track, 'Heart of Glass' is absolutely bulletproof. Elsewhere, Parallel Lines is that rare album where the 'big' songs are by and large the best of the bunch, or at least the most memorable. 'Sunday Girl', 'One Way or Another', the aforementioned 'Heart of Glass' are all wonderful pop songs with a little bit of punky grit to them. Harry is a great vocalist, by the way, almost actorly in the way she inhabits the songs. I still maintain that the Nerves did the best version of 'Hanging on the Telephone'.
This is as 4 stars as 4 stars gets. Never lulls, never quite grabs the halo of perfection. I miss this attitude.
Konsistent, teilweise originelle Riffs, super Sängering Gerne mix mit Pop, Western, Reggae
One way or another capolavoro generazionale. Il resto non si salva. Sbagliato: c'è Heart of glass
more albums should be made by people who hate each other and can't play their instruments
such great vibes and beats - just a pick-you-up album that feels so empowering.
Solid album
Sunday girl, hanging in the telephone, heart of glass (of course).
Very good album
I remember some of these songs from commercials on tv I think. It's good, but I don't really listen to this kind of music.
I liked this album. The roughness of the vocals added to the vibe in a way that just sat right with me. I'll probably have to come back to this at some point. 4/5
Parallel Lines by Blondie stands as an intriguing blend of artistry and pop sensibility. This album is a testament to the band's ability to seamlessly intertwine the sexy and the brainy with a musical landscape heavy influenced by the 60s and adorned with elements of 70s art rock and even prog at times. However, the album feels disjointed, with individual songs shining brightly but failing to coalesce into a cohesive whole. Each track seems to exist in its own sonic universe, showcasing the band's diverse influences and their willingness to experiment. The album, while not harmonious, is a celebration of Blondie's influences, marked by their daring spirit to push musical boundaries. Stand out are household tracks One Way Or Another and Heart of Glass.
Blast from past and forgotten treasures.
I know its pop-rock, but I actually prefer when the vocals weren't trying to sound rock-y. For example, Sunday Girl and Heart Of Glass. Though One Way Or Another is a timeless banger.
Biased because played this all the time as a kid, but quite varied and has stood the test of time imo
Surprisingly modern sounds for an album released in 1978. On their artist page I found a song “call me” that I liked, as well as “picture this” Very consistent quality, some nice guitar solos, overall I enjoyed this album, between 3/4 stars for me. Good disco vibes
Has iconic sons One Way Or Another, Heart of Glass and Once I Had A Love
Pretty good, had a real 80s vibe
Debbie Harry as charming as they come - what a front woman, all sass and rough edged. The album could almost serve as a greatest hits, with many radio friendly tracks here - pulsing new wave post punk aesthetic - we can play and write a tune but we won’t overstay our welcome. As well as the glorious Hanging on the Telephone, you get Blondie’s finest moment - Picture This - sultry to snarling, a picture of cold New York, poetic and emotive, building to a beautiful raw conclusion.
Has there ever been an album with more hits on it? I’d never heard ‘Will Anything Happen’ and it’s my song for this week. Never appreciated d how suited Debbie’s voice was to this music. Having said that, am amused to notice that some of the songs are less punky and more ‘musical theatre’
Debbie Harry is an absolute boss
i love moving 2 the music
Blondy
Great album. Really enjoy their early punk sound.
Short. Wish the band showcased its chops more. Apparently a way more influential band than I ever realized.
Amazing pop punk riffs , felt like a Fall Out Boy albums at times. Hard to believe this is from 78’. Will definitely listen again.
A expectativa para ouvir o mega hit se transforma numa audição formidável.
Excellent, and liked a few songs I'd never heard, to boot!
Picture This is my favorite of the singles from this album - can't believe it was released before Heart of Glass and One Way or Another - this album is hit after hit. Not a huge fan of I Know But I Don't Know.
First time I ever heard any music by Blondie (apart from one way or another) and I thoroughly enjoyed it! Not entirely my style of music though so just a 4/5 for me
Just great punky new wave. I mainly like it for the singles, but the rest is good too.
Classic
Getragen wird das Album von der kraftvollen Stimme, die zwischen klar und brachial schwankt und an Wanda Jackson erinnert. Das Album versprüht hier und da einen 50er-Rockabilly vibe, besonders deutlich beim Song "I'm gonna love you too".
Certainly a way to start, Blonde’s seminal album with such hits as Heart of Glass and One Way or Another. Has that CBGB attitude with those great pop hooks. The guitar tone on this album is second to none. Debbie Harry sounds great too. Love how this album is fast and loud too. 82/100
good
Solid Blondie rock album. New to me that I liked - 11:59
Blondasse a bien réussi son coup mais n'a pu éviter de me rappeler des trajets en voiture sur fond d'elle-même pendant lesquels on suffoquait sous 34 degrés et qui puaient le cuir brûlant dans toute la Citroën Picasso. Heart of Glass représente ceci pour moi.
Belle prestation de la part de Blondie, mais pas autant que ce tube de la MZ me rappelant mon été 2014, Lune de fiel et son mythique "on va juste fumer tiser baiser".
pretty great
Blondie kind of jams. I don't care what anyone says, One Way Or Another is a great song. Like it was custom built for rabid montage scenes. Picture This is a fine follow-up -- kind of forgettable though. Fade Away and Radiate, connects. Not at all what I was expecting in this album in a good way. Feels almost proggy in its construction, and the vocals are solid. Feels like some modern indie that I've heard, but like 45 years earlier. Gives way to a Police/Umph-like dubby outro. Weird song, but I fuck with it. Instrumental on I Know But I Don't Know goes pretty hard. Once again, feels prog influenced in a big way, but with standard pop-rock structure. Guitar rips through the back half. This is a jam. All said, I enjoyed this album a lot more than I expected. The hit singles are great: One Way Or Another and Heart of Glass. There are also some surprise jams: Fade Away and Radiate, 11:59, I Know But I Don't Know. The rest of the album is solid work. 4 / 5.
Wish I could have paid attention to this album more because I really enjoyed having it on while being pissed at my coworker and trying to fix some work so I was in the zone. I really like the guitar and chorus part of Heart of Glass. Is that Animal from the Muppets on Just Go Away?? I liked that album much more than I thought I was going to it was much more rock than I expected
Debbie Harry is the bollocks. This is proper fun and packed with hits. Not the very best of its era but very much up there with them.
This is fun - had no idea that all these hits were on one album (reminds me of Rumours in that sense). A few of the tracks feel like filler, but not many, and there's the odd song which really surprised me (Fade Away & Radiate goes almost proggy in the second half). That said, it's a bit samey through that middle section. Could've done with a bit more edge to the music, it gets a bit twee and ABBA-y in places, which takes a bit away of it (they're not as good as ABBA are at being ABBA, sounds much better the punkier it gets). Just squeaks a 4 though.
classic
An album from when Blondie could do little wrong, although much of the credit for this power pop classic must go to producer Michael Chapman.
Important
I enjoyed the singles. Not sure there was enough for 5 stars
Never listened to a whole blondie album. This was good.
After a few times listening the whole album, i got into it. The sound is really smooth overall and nice to listen to.
This was a nice album with catchy upbeat tunes, though maybe a bit too conventional for me. Heart of Glass was my favourite track by far.
"I'm gonna do my best to hook ya" zegt Blondie terwijl ik zit te vissen. Prima poppy lichte punk, geen irritaties. Niks mis met dit album. Lichte 4.
Love it when my AOTD is something I have a physical copy of - a treat to listen to this classic on vinyl. There are a couple of album tracks that drag it down but inspired singles and hidden gems like Fade Away and Radiate make this a pleasure to listen to.
Heard this album a TON when I was a kid. When my mom put this record on it was usually on Sunday morning and usually because it was house cleaning day. That meant get your ass out of bed and get cleaning. Great album in spite of the weird memories.
Very good
So many great pop songs - Hanging on the Telephone, One Way or Another, Pretty Baby, Sunday Girl, even the over-played Heart of Glass, surrounded by so much filler (Good filler, but filler none the less).
Succinct and seductive, Blondie’s Parallel Lines comes oh-so close to perfection, but some slight shagginess gets in the way of true transcendence.
Very good
Oh, that was a pleasure! Oldies, but goodies.
I don’t know… much to my fathers dismay I find no problem with this band and honestly would compliment it. I don’t know if it’s because i’m feeling generous or because I have not had over a three in what feels like a year but… no complaints here!
Loved it
Forgot how good this album is. It just sits on the self and rarely comes out. Listening on Spotify through small speaker though don’t do it justice. Let’s get home and spin it, with the volume up. It will be on more regular rotation for a while
Fuck ya
Fantastic record
Surprisingly good through out
This album is terrific, it was as big of a deal in the late 70s as it is today! Debbie Harry's vocal range continues to be one of the best, and its blend of traditional pop and rock is excellent. Not only was it a big deal for the new wave scene, but it was also an influential album for showcasing the women of rock music, with Debbie being one of the most iconic frontwomen EVER. My favorites on the album were "Heart of Glass" and "One Way or Another", but all of the tracks on here were good!
Este disco es divertido. No es gracioso, es divertido.
Lekker album, niet alle nummers top.
Really good album, but not my cup of tea so putting a 4/5 instead of a 5/5
31/6/23 Nothing But HITS!!!! everyone but debby harry looks mad goofy tho Fade away & radiate's intro REALLY reminded me of styx's renegade; this album made me think of a surprising amount of mental actually Fave Track; Picture This (<3)
Fun listen
This is the first album in a while I've listened to and thought "wow, I really have been missing out!" It's so fun and energetic. Interesting textures, fun synths, tons of super catchy melodies and of course, Debbie's iconic voice make it so listenable. Of course it sounds its age in some places, but I was still surprised to learn this is from the 70s?!? There are a lot of 80's new wave albums on this list that sound way more dated and uncool now...
Some classic songs on this album, feels later than 1978
Just really good, solid pop punk (or is it punk pop?)
I honestly didn't think I loved Blondie and this album as much as I did. It's excellent. And lots in there that set me off on huge nostalgia trip for the songs I was playing in the late 90s that were being influenced by this (that I didn't even realise at the time).
Alright Debbie Harry, you got me on this one. Vocals hard carry this album, especially considering the very simplistic instrumentals, but it still makes for a fantastic album. There's so many different genres at play here, which makes it the best kind of pop album. I'll be generous here because I was surprised that the entire album was well done, not just the massive hits that are Heart of Glass and One Way or Another. Thanks for saving this album from mediocre men Debbie!
They put the fun in "that new wave album is fun"
It's punk, it's rock, it's new wave... What is there to hate?
I always enjoy listening to this album
Very pro
This is hard for me to rate. Blondie is so meaningful to me. Debbie Harry was probably the first true rock female lead I’d ever heard. She’s a total badass and I don’t know how she dealt with all the shit she got performing next to punk bands at CBGBs. I love when she gets raspy. It feels like she’s losing her mind. Especially the back half of One Way or Another. I bet if this record was re-recorded today I might get a 5. I just don’t find the songs musically interesting. I like 11:59 and Heart of Glass. Parts get a bit boring though.
It’s clear the punk influences formerly I no the band gave way to more pop and disco sensibilities. Nonetheless this album is a top to bottom classic. Debbie Harry still kept one thing from the punk days…the attitude.
Some standouts, of course, but not everything I was hoping for. Some slightly weird production at points, but a good listen all in all
I’ve been a Blondie enjoyer since I was a kid, but I somehow never realized all my favorite Blondie songs are on the same album. This was very solid — there were some downs to complement the ups, which is the only reason this isn’t a 5.
Nice. Some cool tunes I didn't even realise they sang, feeling generous today.
Yeah it sounds like Blondie but I really like Blondie. A great fun album
Solid album, upbeat and catchy.
I knew the hits of course, but the rest of the album was great too. Classic
Still great after all these years
Surprisingly good
Pretty remarkable, still.
Album valt eigenlijk nergens tegen.
I had forgotten how much was on this album.
Oh I love hanging on the telephone and generally, the album has so many good songs.
Sure a little more pop than the early albums but still has a bit on edge. Good stuff.
I think Debbie Harry is amazing in general. Punk tinged New Wave, disco, hints of some late 50’s/early 60’s in here too. This album has a couple absolute gems (Telephone, Will Anything Happen, Heart of Glass), but some run-of-the-mill filler as well (Fade Away and Radiate, 11:59,…). Still, I like this record.
I'm not sure how the CBGB scene reacted to Blondie putting out a dance track. It must have been an interesting topic at the time. This album worked for me. The first 3 or 4 tracks were solid and the rest of the album kept me interested. Heart of Glass is a standout on its own. Even if I'm not sure how it came from this band.
I enjoyed this album a lot. Some great songs on here that you'll know. A couple of songs that weren't my favorite but overall it was a really good album.
Stylowy, słoneczny, super female energy.
Great feel and listen. Great tracks. Obviously great vocals. Had no idea this was in 1978, that’s amazing! Solid 4. TBz 1. One Way Or Another 2. Heart Of Glass 3. 11:59 4. I Know But I Don’t Know
Fabulous record.
Aww yeeee. You know heart of glass. You know one way or another. That's all there is, right. That's all this has to offer. Wrong. False. This is solid start to finish. With diverse genres and fun everywhere. Picture this, hanging on the telephone and pretty baby deserve the airplay just as much as the ones that did get it.
This was a delightful surprise: I completely failed to appreciate this record when I listened to it years ago, dismissing everything apart from the famous songs as filler. It’s all very good or great.
incredible singles make this a top notch album. my usual comment re: Greatest Hits applies
Excellent
Highlight: Heart of Glass
Heart of glass i Hanging on the telephone to bangery. Bang a gong w oryginale lepsze.
very fun listen. classic album
Still a screecher but a lot better than anticipated. One way or another #1
Classic new wave. It can get a little too pop-oriented at times for my taste, but it's undeniable. Catchy, a little punk attitude, a little art school attitude, but undeniably cool. Good stuff.
To quote myself on a previous "listen to these albums" quest: "Hanging on the Telephone" *swoon*
Bangers from start to end. Really enjoyed this album. Melding punk, pop, doo wop, hip-hop, disco. Favorite tracks include: -Hanging on the Telephone -Pretty Baby -I know but I don't know -11:59 -Heart of Glass Will revisit this one.
This was GREAT!!! New to Blondie, I know the big hits like everyone else does but this album is awesome! Debbie Harry has ‘tude and the band are whip tight! Not a bad tune on this album! Definitely going into the collection! It’s amazing!
nice
not a bad song on the whole album with some absolute bangers sprinkled in.
👍
The mix of synth and guitar that meshes really good with the rest of the song highlights why I like 80's music so much. This album was very enjoyable, I love that the vocals give plenty of space for the instrumental to breathe and vice versa. Great delivery with the vocals too! If I had to find a dislike some of the lyrics were a bit too vague. This was a very influential album so I can't pinpoint a specific thing this reminds me of, a lot of classic riffs here!
Not the best Blondie album imo but still really great!
Great album. Love Debbie Harry 😎
Another classic album that’s largely split between 5⭐️ and 3⭐️ songs
Blondie is great, but I can't call this a perfect album.
Good
One way or another you've got to like this album by Blondie—whether you have a heart of glass or are just a Sunday girl. I mean, I know but I don't know...you know? Yeah, all kinds of telephone themes on Parallel Lines just like those old wires. Classic.
4.5
Great new wave album. Their best.
An absolute classic of New Wave.....is this the alum that invented New Wave? Quite possibly! Anyway an album that is much greater than the sum of its hits. Heart of Glass is of course THE iconic New Wave/Rock/Disco smash that basically invented the "genre". But like I say every song on this album is worthy of at least your attention. Its hard to overstate the inportance of this album in the shaping of the music of the late 70s and early 80s. 4.5 stars
An essential album on the border of rock, pop, and new wave. I’m not a huge fan of Pretty Baby but every other song is great. An incredibly tight, consistent and energetic album
It’s a nice album to sit through, I like that end of seventies just not too polished (or not at all) production. A lot more punk than that album by the Lemonheads.
Genres: New wave, Punk, Rock Formed: New York in 1980? Run time: 16 songs, 56 min 55 sec (12 tracks on the original release) Debbie Harry has an unmistakable and fantastic voice. This album was responsible for their mainstream success in the UK, US, and Australia. Some accused them of selling out when they infused Disco in the single “Heart of Glass”. As the song had been performed by them since the mid-70s, I’d say they adapted to the times. Most groups who achieve a long career, don’t do it by standing still. The album contains numerous hits that are instantly recognisable to this day. They have earned their place in music’s history books.
Really cool album! Heart of Glass is of course an all time banger.
Before this I had really only heard the singles. Whole album is pretty good, though those were the best songs
Some more instantly recognizable classics. A bit too pop for my taste but overall good
It's easier to fall in love with Debbie Harry than the Blondie, but they're a package deal, so...
Debbie Harry has a great voice. I knew One Way Or Another and Heart Of Glass and I was so pleasantly surprised to really enjoy a couple other songs that I didn’t know. I don’t recall a song I disliked n the album. I pick up a little bit of The Go-Go’s from this album. Rather I sense that The Go-Go’s had a little bit of this album Blondie album in their debut, Beauty And The Beat. Sure enough, the Inspired by Blondie playlist has a The Go-Go’s song in it. I also noticed that Blondie was a regular presence at CBGB in the mid 1970s. They are a nice edition to my where-and-when-in-music-history-would-you-like-to-visit, 1975 CBGB with Patti Smith and Television. Blondie’s bassist even joined to Television when they needed one. Small world.
Great album cover, great songs, great energy. Lots of fun to listen to.
Good pop hits
Fortfarande ett starkt album!
A few great and iconic song on this album but other than that it’s pretty mediocre
Heart of Glass
Had not listened to this album in full. Very good, the sequencing in the beginning isn’t great and it takes a moment to get going, but it’s fun and you can see why they matter.
One Way or Another + Heart of Glass single-handedly brings this one up to a 4. Solid album.
Great album
Some great beats. Didn't skip any songs.
It has three of the greatest pop/punk/disco songs of all time on it. Other than that, it is mostly just okay, with a few great moments. It's all good though, definitely a strong album.
Pretty good!
I'm not the worl'd biggest new wave fan, but this album is really nice, with good songs, clever hooks, engaging arrangements and quite a bit of variation. I will listen to this again. 4/5
4.5
Just a solid rock record. Great stuff. The critics call this a “pop” record, but I think it’s pretty rockin’ so I’m disregarding their- ***FRIPP ALERT*** **Robert Fripp appears on track “Fade Away and Radiate”** ***This has been a test of the EMERGENCY FRIPP ALERT SYSTEM. You are clear to resume your normal day to day activities*** -opinion. What do the critics know anyway?
Such a great mix of punk and new wave that keeps some of the rawness and edge of punk but mixes it with a poppy sheen. Just makes me wanna jam.
Very nostalgic
Great Blondie album. Fun listen but I never really yearn to listen to Blondie. Still, again, can’t deny that it’s a great album.
The crossover appeal of this album is off the charts. An enticing mix off punk, pop, disco, and rock. Each song and genre is written and performed with great craft and fits seamlessly together on this album. Rating: 4/5 Playlist track: Heart of Glass Date listened: 27/12/22
Mary- 4
Yeah
Outstanding album. An absolute Classic. 9/10
The singles are perfect pop, but some of the album tracks are a bit filler. I quite enjoyed the Banana Splits inspired tune, but this felt like something I would have loved a lot more as a teenager. There's nothing innovative here but Blondie were a great pop band on their day, and Harry's voice is distinctive.
Good classic album
Production is super tight for 1978 (ah crap I'm listening to the remastered version), and the songwriting is great. I always loved how Debby Harry had this badass-ness about her. Man she is gorgeous too. "One Way or Another" is such an American classic. I feel like I have only ever heard this song through a crappy car radio and never though studio monitors- it sounds so sick! Overall I enjoyed it. I think it's a solid 4.
Goeie hitjes, andere nummers hit or miss. Net tussen 3 en 4 maar voor heart of glass doen we 4.
Oikein hyvä! Heart of glass pelastaa ehkä vähän notkahtavan b-puolen, kun alussa on ensin ladattuna hittiä. Nopee tempo viehättää
Fun. Was expecting cheap pop but was surprised. Interesting sounds and changes. Fav tracks: hearth of glass (10/10) one way or another (classic) pretty baby and hanging on the telephone
Slaps
One song sounds like the Only Fools & Horses theme
Excelente álbum! Lo mejor inmediatamente después del punk para entrar en la new wave de los '80. Sigo insistiendo: lo mejor del rock de Estados Unidos está del lado de la costa Este.
One of the best mixes of post punk and self expression there is. Blondie delivers. 4/5
50% stone cold classics, that's a pretty high number for a single album produced in the 70s. most 70s albums we've had on this list are one or two hits and a shit load of filler. the filler isn't too bad on this either.
I enjoyed it Debbie
When they're good, they are very very good. This album was a harbinger of what was to come during the 80's. It had little hints of punk, some new wave, the synth sound of progressive music. Anybody hearing this album for the first time may think, "meh", but in 1978 this was a bridge between 70's album rock and synth-heavy 80's music. At the time nobody knew that it was anything more than just a different sound.
Very good, I would listen again
taylor swift could learn a thing or two from chris and debbie about songwriting
incredible singles make this a top notch album. my usual comment re: Greatest Hits applies
5 massive post punk hits. Its a hard one to criticize. Brilliant vocals. Muscular guitars with pleasing rhythm lines. Stong 4 but is just a bit too bubble-gum to make a 5. Also a coule of the non-singles are skippable. Maybe I'm wrong. 4.5.
Loads of pop hits on this one! A lot of them have a fifties rock n' roll feel, so it sounds pretty normal when they play a Buddy holly cover. "Heart of Glass" sounds so out of place, like they decided to go all OMD on us for one song, but after listening to the original version from four years earlier, it was clearly the right move. A defining album from that era!
amazing post pop punk album fun quirky rocky
Mi-a plăcut 4.5
I like it
