Reviews (page 5 of 7)
I like some Roxy Music and Bryan Ferry songs but generally his swagger is a little tedious. I've never felt the need to listen to an entire album and I understand why. This is a little proggy. I don't think there's any problem with being progressive and experimental musically, but it dates an album. What was new and exciting in 1973 just sounds hokey and uninteresting 50 years later. Maybe my dad found this subversive and interesting and the feeling stuck with him, but that's not part of my journey.
Not really for me, but I can see how this started a movement in music.
I've actually listened to several songs from this band before, but I never paid attention to their name. Pretty good sound, but after going through their discography, I'm left kind of wanting for a different selection from them.
Fun rock record with some catchy tunes. Early relative of modern rock.
I like it now. First listened in 2020 and hated it. A lot going on, it's artsy, had to listen to it twice (loud the second time) to catch many of the nuances. Very cool things happening as the album unfolds.
Pretty solid
3.1/5 Best Track: Strictly Confidential
B- Do the Strand 3 Beauty Queen 3 Strictly Confidential 3 Editions of You 3 In Every Dream Home a Heartache 3 The Bogus Man 3 Grey Lagoons 3 For Your Pleasure 3 Roxy Music, it was a pleasure, as always.
more interesting than the last few but nothing stands out
Decent enough album, nothing special, nothing bad
I’m not sure this ages very well. It’s certainly of a time, I can feel the sequins and glam makeup as I listen to it. It’s interesting for its time frame for sure, but you really have to be in the mood to be transported back here. I’m generally not. It’s not bad, it’s just a bit threadbare by now.
Some great music, but I don't love any of the individual songs and Ferry isn't making me swoon like he seems to do for so many others. 3/5
Never been a big Roxy Music fan, but I often enjoy when I listen. Can't deny Bryan Eno's contributions to music from then on. Side 2 is great 3/5
Not my cup a tea, but I respect the influence they've had on lots of bands 1st 2.5
Fun album. Upbeat and groovy
Was a little skeptical about this but then learned that Brian Eno was in the band so of course this album was very musically sound and in some ways ahead of it’s time. You can really hear the Eno on the last track it’s almost like a transition song to his solo masterpiece that dropped two years later “Another Green World”
Cool
Do the Strand
Really great vibe and instrumentals, not for me
Meh
What is this shit? A play? it's been a little funky I don't know what to really think about it. I like that it's so unique. Almoost experimenta.. I like the variety of instruments. the lyrics are definitely unique as well. Almost kind of eerie in a way. Reminds me of Mealoaf a bit. I'm not thinking this deserves more than 3 stars.
I prefer the first album, but this one probably deserves more listens
I wasn't expecting to be kind of bored by this one, but alas, I was
strange but kinda gud
This isn't really my thing, I wanted to like this but I couldn't get into it at all. I'm not sure if Glam rock is for me but I will continue to explore the genre. Roxy music is an iconic band, I have respect for what Bryan Ferry and Brian Eno both did to music, just not my thing. Standouts: Do the Strand, Editions of You, In Every Dream Home a Heartache
Nice too, idk what to say more.
This one didn't quite grab me as much as the debut but still interesting. That first song kind of wrecks the whole album but the later songs from about Editions Of You are more enjoyable.
The rating isn’t lower out of respect for Brian Eno only. I’d say it’s an overlong bore.
meh
jazzy so far! might be ahead of its time. I agree with the reviews that say a cover this excellent deserves a better album.
Not for me but different. My favorite song was probably Grey Lagoons, and that’s only because it made more sense then the rest of their music.
Kinda funky, I guess
1. Do the Strand - I like the music but the lyrics were a little odd. An ok sound. 2. Beauty Queen - this one is kinda a ballad a bit, not my favourite. 3. Strictly Confidential - I don’t love the sound of this one and singing style… 4. Editions of You - very interesting style, almost electro pop at times 5. In Every Dream Home a Heartache - very slow and eerie feel, but I like the lyrics and the style of singing it’s a cool sound. 6. The Bogus Man - pretty upbeat, lots of saxophones, an ok sound 7. Grey Lagoons - Elton-esque, not too bad 8. For Your Pleasure - it was an ok closer a little long dragged a bit Overall I don’t mind the style of the band and I actually think it’s quite innovative for the time, and not that dated. But it wasn’t really my style.
This is either the Roxy Music album I like the most or the one I dislike the least. Few decent rock like tracks and Ferry vocals are more in check on this album as well. Still not a big fan of them.
It was ok. I liked the other 2 albums better.
It's fine. I'm not a big fan of Roxy Music as I'm finding out now that this is the third one we had. They're all just fine.
Not for me.
at times an interesting jumble with fascinating instrumentation but lacks the drive of Siren which I prefer.
3.5/5
Didn't hate it but its a one and done.
It does sound a little ahead of its time, and I can hear some Nick Cave stylings in there!
agréablement surpris. 7/10
This was better than I expected as I’ve always found Bryan Ferry’s voice incredibly grating
not feeling this one
Right from the opener you can hear the tension here: Bryan's lyrics fighting for attention with Eno's music. It's a glorious clash of styles. This is such a cocky second album. Do The Strand swaggers along. It stalls a little towards the end. Eno seems to have won that battle for one final time.
its similar to the Divine Comedy's Casanova but has too many meandering musical breaks and the lyrics aren't very fun
- Already had Country Life on the generator - Preferred this one to that - All-round decent album - Big fan of long songs, so liked The Bogus Man most - Fav songs: The Bogus Man, Do the Strand, Editions of You
It was OK - I didn't know any of the songs but enjoyed it enough to work through the whole album, but probably wouldn't listen again
I just want more from Eno and Petty together.
Does the Roxy Music job. None of it sticks with me but flows by nicely.
Production is great, but the sounds that they produce are fine. Most of the time, they’re fun to listen to, but nothing special. Unique, but boring. Almost got excited in a few parts. 3/5
As much as I try I can't get beyond the zaniness. It sounds like a parody of Rocky Horror Picture show to me, which I acknowledge is Rocky Horror Picture Show's fault because it came after this album. I wonder if there is a direct connection or if that sound was just kind of in the air in the early to mid 70's. In any case, I keep hoping that Roxy Music will grow on me, but no luck so far.
Some moments of greatness but overall I think I like other Roxy a bit more. 3.5 to 3. Farewell Eno!
iznenađujuče dobar album. Editions of You je superb.
Roxy music is such a bizarre situation for me. I don't care for Bryan Ferry at all (nothing wrong with the guy, I just don't like his music), but I fucking love Brian Eno. On their albums, it seems like I half enjoy a lot of the songs, and this album is a great example of that. Unfortunately, this makes for a dull listening experience. I really thought I was going to like this album, but at least I can comfort myself with everything Brian Eno did after this 3/5
Once again I hate the sax sound, but these songs at least fare better than their other album I listened to.
Interesting to listen to this. Obviously I know who Roxy Music are and I know some of the hits - and can remember Jealous Guy being everywhere when I was a teenager... From this I think I only knew Do The Strand - and that would only be because there's a clip from, I presume, The Old Grey Whistle Test which seems to appear on BBC 4 quite regularly. It was an exploration then, which was nice - and generally I enjoyed it. You can see where it's laying some of the ground for what's to come with punk and post-punk electronica, all of which I enjoyed. Editions of You in particular. Some of the rest I was less keen on, and maybe it's just a little bit too cool for me. Better than Jealous Guy though... It's a 3.5, but I'm trying to be a bit more selective with my 4s as I get toward 50 albums, so it'll be a 3.
a solid 3. Interesting stuff and def a good sound. The vocal performance is a bit weird and not really my thing but overall this is a good record. The opening track Do The Strand was really impressive.
A difficult third album. I like Roxy Music but this recording is not them at their creative best.
If I put this on endless replay will this grow on me?! Can I then join the cool cats club? Maybe. Do I have the energy? No. Do I feel I'm missing something? Very much.
Easy enough to listen to.
holy fuck this is shite. every dream home a heartache is annoying me quite a bit. strictly confidential was fairly good. okay second half of every dream home a heartache is good. my maths wasn't going great I apologise everyone. the bogus man is a cool jazz-esque song this album has redeemed itself. I must say I am not a big fan of the singers timbre. I like summa the Roxy music songs otherwise though they got some tunes. you know what this album from second half of edhah onwards is actually really good. I think the condition of the first half means the album only warrants 3 stars sorry Roxy and music. im actually annoyed. because the second half of this album is actually amazing. but the first half is so painfully mediocre. the second half would certainly get a 4 if the first half was up to par or even just a bit below, but it's not. so I am gonna have to give this a 3 despite it not being reflective of the whole album despite being reflective of the album as a whole.
Roxy Music's second album. From England. Genre : Art rock, glam rock, art pop Single: Do the Strand (#23 NL, #43 GER) Notable Songs: Do the Strand, In Every Dream Home is a Heartache 3/5
Some songs were nice. Others not.
It's okay
A bit tame to start with but the whole of the album was bright and quite good.
Not Dull, but not exciting. Not plain, but not weird. 3* through and through.
Started good but tails off towards the end, couple of bad and long songs
Watched the documentary; didn’t get it. Listened to first few songs; didn’t get it. Deeper into album it started to groove. Pulled it up from a 2 to a 3.
Vaya ...
Not my cup of tea, lads. Love Eno’s production work with Talking Heads, James etc. not keen on Roxy Music. I also think BF is a bellend but that may be a coincidence.
I liked some of the instrumentals a lot, I’m a sucker for wind instruments in rock music and this has both brass and woodwork (I think?) I absolutely despised the singer though, such an annoying voice and way of singing. He kinda ruined the whole album for me and I noticed that the only parts that I liked where parts where he’d shut up (the drop at In Every Dream Home A Heartache, for example)
That is another classic.
This is more or less the inverse of the first Roxy album - one side of energetic proto-new wave rock sounds, another side of quasi-krautrock divergences under the leadership of Brian Eno. While I preferred the more esoteric work on their first record, here it’s a bit of a drag. Conversely, the first side has a couple of genuinely revolutionary rock music. It’s tasteful and bombastic all at once, but perhaps lacking in the chorus section to really worm its way to my heart. On the whole, it’s not quite as good as the first record but I can definitely appreciate Roxy Music’s valuable contribution to the canon of popular music a lot more for having listened to this record.
I don't like Roxy Music. That was at least the thought I had when I saw this album yesterday. I still don't really like Roxy Music, but this is a step in the right direction. Standouts: Do The Strand, Grey Lagoon
Yeah, it was some music.
Rock
Really interesting. Sort of "progressive light" sound, innovative. A good listen.
This was like listening to dreamy music in an otherwise empty sensory deprivation tank.
cool sound - brian eno. 3 stars
Judging the album just from the cover I thought I would hate it but I was pleasantly surprised that this album was actually decent. 6.5/10
That's really interesting, I've absolutely loved some tracks, but some others were quite boring. To be honest the one about an inflatable doll weirded me out a little bit, but I guess I'll have to be more focused on the lyrics next time. So, mixed feelings.
Pretty good
Hmm
Pretty good, decent music that I didn’t mind listening too, will I come back to it? Hard to say
2/8, 25%
Sounds still very fashionable and fresh, with some very strong songs.
Classic, but not touching.
I’m kinda sick of giving out average of 3 and hearing a little less than mediocre music but that’s what this album was. Some songs were thought provoking but that’s a stretch for the rest.
Second Roxy Music album. Roxy are a great example of why this 1001 album exercise is a blast - I had almost completely bypassed all of Roxy's work until this past year. Highly varied and interesting British rock. Such a dull and lame description but how else do you describe this band? They rock out right at the start with "Do The Strand" then they tap a bit into glam on "Beauty Queen" - and what the hell even is "Strictly Confidential" - almost a touch of early Genesis in there...? "Editions of You" adds a touch of (not shitty) punk into the glam... and this all in the first half of the album. All along the way topped by Bryan Ferry's adaptable vocal styles...In recalling "Country Life" I believe I thought of Bryan Ferry as "a better Bowie" - odd inflections in his vocal stylings that - forced or not - works way way better for me than anything Bowie ever did. Also this music is far superior (ending the Bowie comparisons right now) - this was a band in the truest sense i.e. it was not the Ferry Show by any means: individual performances from each of keys/sax/guitar/drums all stand out. On the negative side... this album is difficult to really dig into - it is a bit weird-weird. i.e. It's tough to latch onto many hooks or memorable phrasing, especially in the second half / side. But I'll turn that around and say it's a feature not a bug - actually it almost pains me to say that this is not that much unlike Velvet Underground ... only the biggest difference is that this band doesn't suck ass. So in the end - I don't think I like this as much as "Country Life" even though that one took a few listens to really start to catch me. I could see this being another slow burn but I'm going to round down here due to songwriting that's just not quite there yet. Weird fun art rock but lacking just a bit of lure that emerges on other Roxy records. 6/10 3 stars.
The first half was kind of lame but the second half was actually really cool with more varied tracks
Liked this one, will give it another listen at some point, different
-"In Every Dream Home A Heartache" starts with a creepy vibe and then suddenly becomes a hard rock jam -Other songs are perfectly plain rock songs, not much notable
+ very fun and interesting art/glam rock! + bit theatrical - too long songs for my taste - repetitive + fun experience tho
Very Bowie sounding, love that Eno’s on the synthesizer.
I honestly don't remember much about the last album I got from roxy music other than the album cover so I can't really compare these albums other than to say that I probably won't remember this album either. I really liked the second half of in every dream home a heartbreak but other than that there isn't much here that's likely to stick with me.
listened to before didn't love it
Decent album that just has a bit too much going on for me. There was something about the combination of the singing and the eclectic, progressive and at times weird sound that just made the album feel very strenuous to listen to
A nice little listen! Lots of variety and quality experimentation. I like the slower, darker cuts over the high energy ones, but nothing too awful anywhere on this thing. 6/10
Enjoyed the listen, would give it another try
Gotta love that Chic sound!
IED
Decent enough, enjoyed a few songs.
3.5
Not really familiar with early Roxy Music work. You can definitely hear the influence that Brian Eno would have on later Talking Heads albums. My favorite song on this record is Grey Lagoons. Great band jam in that one.
Ambitious and impressive, but not at all fun. Listening to this was work and that cuts against its score for me.
Bom.
Glam rock. Ni fu ni fa.
I haven’t listened to this one in a while but my first band’s guitarist was obsessed with Roxy Music and this album particularly. Bryan Ferry’s vibrato is legendary! This album is a pleasure for me.
I think this is generally regarded by Roxy Music fans as the band's best, but I find the album kind of uneven. It's good, but I prefer the self-titled personally.
Buena voz.
Roxy Music. Utterly baffling, weirdly listenable, doing everything possible to distract and distance the listener. I can’t review this! I am confounded. I like it, I hate it. I need more time.
5/10 I don’t really see the appeal
It was alright, but in an interesting way at least. 6/10
Najbardziej mi w pamięć zapadło "In Every Dream Home A Heartache".
Was curious to listen to a Roxy album as they have featured in many books I've read over the years. I knew a couple of their songs and there are some really interesting tunes here. A kind of darker underbelly of pop that has intriguing moments.
It sounded like Nigel got a kick ass backing band! The vocal stylings have a lot of similarities.
Some pretty inventive stuff here. The musicianship is very strong. The quirky voice works most of the time but can be way off. More than this I can't say.
Enjoyed it but other albums are better
Frankly, every other Roxy Music album sounds to me like a rehearsal for Avalon. That said, The Bogus Man is a really good track: I'm a sucker for those repetitive, extra unnecessarily long, tunes.
The first song rocks, but the rest of the album is just normal. The last song looks like something that could be happened here, but then the album ends.
2.5/5. This was fine, kind of annoying if I'm being honest. I just don't really like the arty/glammy type of rock.
progressive, but not sure I would listen again
6/10
It was fine. Nothing much to say. It started off better than it ended I think, but due to road noise, I heard the end a lot less clearly.
I get how some folks enjoy it, but the style is not for me.
3/5
Very glam. 6/10
I've always been a fan of Do the Strand. It's a killer song. Editions of You is also quite good. I have no clue what instrument does the first solo after the second verse. When in doubt, attribute it to the synth? The rest of side 1 doesn't work that well for me. I include in this group In Every Dream Home a Heartache. Perhaps one needs to have the British sense of humour to enjoy songs about blow-up dolls. I like the instrumentation just before the fake fade but overall I don't think this song has aged well. On the other hand, the avant garde feel to The Bogus Man remains really cool. It's interesting that the lyrics are done less than half way through this 9:20 min song. I guess they were having fun and kept jamming. The sax, harmonica and guitar solos in Grey Lagoon are excellent. Another good jam. Side 2 ends with another avant garde song but this one didn't age so well. Interesting note on the cover picture being BF's gf. I recall Roxy Music's album covers having eye candy but I didn't know they were girlfriends.
This was pretty good
Meh
better than I thought.
Normal
First listen
Not terrible. I enjoyed the piano and horns on the tracks. 3.4
It was interesting. Experimental pop rock. Not my thing though
I have never heard of this band before. A little eccentric but not bad.
Such an eclectic mix of punk and psychedelic tracks.
Bit too trippy for me. Some of the heavier stuff was alright though.
Eclectic. I really only knew about a couple of their 80's songs, which after reading up on I discovered was after one of the key founders/members left. The opening track got me hooked a bit, but I wouldn't say the rest of the album kept me there. There is a lot of stuff going on the arrangements, I'll give them that even if I didn't always love the sound.
Just something about that British pop I can’t get behind
Crafty and Kooky, before the descent into tuxedo wearing lethargy.
Roxy Music is always an interesting band to listen to, captivating atmospheres and intricate sounds.
Alright, but spent a fair bit of time wishing it was Avalon
1-2 songs are interesting
A fun album from a band I hadn’t heard of.
You can hear the influence they have on other bands. I really wanted it to be everything because it starts off strong but it lost me half-way through. But Avalon begins with an 80's classic so in a sense they did find their way.
Not my favourite Roxy Music music.
Not quite sure what I was expecting. I'm not quite sure what I took from it honestly. I didn't enjoy it, But it wasn't the worst thing in the world. Feels like it's just not my cup of tea honestly. I might check it out at another point, but the vocals were very not great to me. Not bad though honestly.
I really liked the back half of this album. In Every Home a Heartache is fantastic. Wasn't crazy about the "glam" elements of this project, such as the style of the lead vocalist.
Enjoyable listen
The sax and extended jazz sections carry this album. Favorite songs are the longer songs - The end part of bogus man, for your pleasure, strictly confidential, and portions of editions of you. Love those squealy saxes. Would I pay for it or listen to it in public? hell no.
I was used to listening to this band's greatest hits, this was a nice exposure to their earlier album work. I loved the sound and songs, but I do think they dragged on for me in parts. I'll probably stick with singles but add some more titles to the rotation.
Better than I thought it would be, In Every Dream Home A Heartache is a banger
I was intrigued, and probably owe it another listen. Kind of a supertramp-feel. Saved track: “In Every Dream Home a Heartache”
Interesting. If I had to say something I’d say it was right for its era and probably influenced a bunch of artists (maybe Queen and Bowie?)
Andy music 100%, good work music
Back to back Roxy Music albums. This one is more approachable, still experimental, but ultimately successful. Though the warble goes a bit overboard, i like the emotion and delivery of Bryan Ferry.
Wow, another David Bowie album.....wait this isn't Bowie? But seriously, this album sounds like something Bowie would make, so that means its pretty good, even if it is somewhat derivative of all the art-rock staples, for example, I also heard a lot of velvet underground in this album. I like the non-linear song progressions, the zany vocal performances are pretty captivating, but I wish there was more melodic-meat to the tunes. The experimental songs with longer run times were my favorites because there were some very satisfying build-ups and break-downs. This album felt a lot longer than it was, because there's something very dense about these songs, it makes a 4 minute song seem like 10 minutes, and a 10 minute song feel like 30 minutes. Overall, it was solid but I was left wanting something a little bit more in terms of the melodies, nothing really hooked me but it still commanded my attention because it was interesting conceptually. Favorite track - The Bogus Man - Least Favorite Track: none
Early alternative. Not the worst.
Some surprisingly good tracks that were very upbeat and fun to listen to. Overall, though, quite a mediocre album.
cool background mood music
Ok album. Kind of show tune sounding. Not bad but nothing too exciting for me.
2,5/5
This was fine. Not quite my style, and the songs didn't really stand out to me.
Liked it!
Bäst är The Bogus man
Maybe I didn’t get it. My Aunt loves Roxy music and she has some pretty good tastes in music but this one just didn’t cook my bacon.
I liked Country Music when I listened to it so I was expecting more of that, but this was too out there for me.
M’oui
J'ai pas kiffé
de la musique bien compliquée pour rien 2+/5
tällaista jammailua ja hengailua jossa puhallinsoittimia ja sessiomeininkiä.
Passable...
Really didn't enjoy this one much- there were some good moments (especially a surprising guitar solo or two) but overall it felt like it was trying too hard to be artsy.
The one flaw of this list is how much weird early British shit is on here for no reason. I’m looking past this one.
I was feeling dismayed by this album, and then Editions of You came on. Great song! Unfortunately that and the last two were the only ones I enjoyed. 2.5 stars.
Snill toer.
3.5/10
The vocals ruined an otherwise “ok” album. Sounded like Jello Biafra in the wrong musical context.
Some guitar work was good. The vocals were not.
Gets Rocky Horror Picture Show vibes immediately — theatrical, glam, deliberately decadent. I understand why people liked it. In 1973 this kind of sexually ambiguous art rock was genuinely provocative and new. The shock has worn off, what's left is a very stylised performance that doesn't quite work for me outside of its historical context. Brian Ferry croons over it all like a man who has decided he is very interesting. Maybe he was. I couldn't quite get there. 2/5 — makes more sense as a document of its time than as a listen.
Not for me. In my ears, the ingredients don't fit together, and the voice is annoying. "The Bogus Man" wasn't bad, but too long. 1.5/5 - weak
Some ok. Most bad
Nope.
I liked the Bogus Man, the rest is utterly forgettable.
It's certainly an album you could listen to. 2.3/5
I liked parts of the songs on this album. There were nice saxophone and rock interludes but I didn’t like the voice of the singer. I forced myself to finish listening to the album
Do The Strand - 3/5 Beauty Queen - 3/5 Strictly Confidential - 3/5 Editions Of You - 3/5 In Every Dream Home A Heartache - 3.5/5 The Bogus Man - 2.5/5 Gray Lagoons - 3/5 For Your Pleasure - 2/5
I liked the first Roxy Music I listened to on the list, but this one is just weak. Totally forgettable and unremarkable.
Don't like that
I love glam, and have always had Roxy Music as a band to “explore more” but haven’t ever really committed to making the time. Took this opportunity to really listen to the album. All of the ingredients are there for me to love it: layered guitars & synths, punchy lyrics, driving percussion, and inventive melodies. However, I do feel that the horns are often more distracting than additive. It’s clear to hear their influence on other acts that I love: Talking Heads, Nick Cave, Pulp, the broader Cool Britannia scene and many more. There’s just something keeping from really being able to connect.
Why does this sound so much like it was released in the early 80s (derogatory). Some interesting stuff in the middle of the album but never worth it. Lean run for me on this list. RYM: N Saved a song: N
All around this really did just feel like a pretty generic new wave album, and to be honest I don't really know what it was even trying to achieve. So many moments just drag on for agggeeeesssss and nothing really comes of them by the end. Considering how much people hype up Roxy Music, I really felt disappointed by this, as it just lacks the originality and substance of all the other top of the line new wave that was around at the same time.
That tremolo had me questioning whether or not my ears had Parkinsons. What a terrible day to be hearing. The sax was nice. 2/5.
Quite glam but didn't capture me.
Disappointingly pretentious
They call Brian Eno 007: 0 bangers, 0 charisma, 7 shitty albums on this list for some reason At the very least this one’s not absolutely horrible, as in I never got the urge to skip any songs on this one. Even though it’s not my thing I can tell these guys are pretty talented, so at the very least I’m not surprised a lot of other musicians really like them Personally I really don’t get the appeal, it’s just not fun and no tracks really groove. It feels like AI music at times where it’s just soulless and fails to leave an impression on you. It’s better than the previous album in the sense that I didn’t have active hostility towards the artist while listening, I just wanted it to be over
Yuck. Great album cover, but that music was awful.
Reading about glam rock, it can often sound like it should be one of the coolest movements in rock history, but it rarely ever lives up to that promise. For example, on this album, Roxy Music kind of comes off as sounding like one of those rock musicals like Hair or whatever, except with a composer who is a bit contemptuous of rock audiences. Which honestly, that *also* sounds like something which should be cool, but it's really not, honestly?
Didn’t finish the album. I just couldn’t connect with the lyrics, rhythm or sound
Maybe your pleasure but not mine. Sax redeemed it just a bit. Any band with Roxy better have a sax. They got that right anyway.
somehow both weird and boring
I dont know if 1001 is wearing me out of Brit Rock (been getting a lot of this lately), but I found myself tired of listening to the album by the end of it. Favorite tracks: Do The Strand, Strictly Confidential 6/10
Bit much but sure. His voice is awful
Somehow this music makes me feel uncomfortable. I only liked In Every Dream Home a Heartache
So I understand the concept of being alternative, rebellious, and going beyond the usual boundaries. I listen to post-punk, although I’m not sure if this can even be classified as such. Unfortunately, this time it didn’t work out, even though I understand the idea—that’s why it’s a 2 rather than a 1. 3/10
Dramatic schlock with a bit of a bit of a punkness to it. Don’t get it.
Meh.
Ei iskenyt. 1,5/5.
Rock but weird, arty. Not into it.
2.5/5
Im not high enough for this
I had no idea Bryan Ferry's voice was so bad on these early albums.
I don't know what that was... Different sure, artistic yes.
Decent. Didn't rock my world.
Meh. Very prolonged. felt like the same song for the entire album
not a fan of that voice... and yes, that cover made me more excited than the album did.
Not a big fan 2/5
Decent album but nothing really clicked with me.
Occasionally good, but mostly bad
Almost nothing about this album sticks out. Unclear on the reasons for inclusion.
2,5
Kinda got better as it went on but still not very good. 4.9/10
Okay
Meh
I wasn't a fan. The experimental timbres of this album made me feel a little uneasy more than anything. The vocal delivery also wasn't my cup of tea. It's a fine album, just not for me.
Meh
kein vergnügen, wenig genuss - leider.
Zum Glück hat Eno die Band verlassen. So wurde etwas Gutes daraus. Hier noch nicht.
This album wins the superlative of most attempts by me to get through it. I thought, much like Steely Dan, my appreciation for this band would grow as I get older. Hasn't happened yet. Last song was pretty good though.
it’s not for me.
I was expecting to like this more, but it was just not doing it for me. Rounding down from a 2.5
i have 0 idea why this is here, important to history I hope
Thank you 1001Album gods for putting this album right after I listened to Brian Eno, because I was easily able to pinpoint why I did not like this album. The whole thing felt like I was trapped in Buffalo Bill's dungeon idk Highlights: Beauty Queen, Editions of You
Instrumental work is decent but I'm not a fan of the vocals
Boring and pointless.
Uninteressante Mischung aus Freestyle Jazz und Beat.
What’s the appeal of sophistication? A striving for an unattainable lifestyle of the idle rich? A perfection of the form, enabled by years of study and mastery? I don’t dislike later Roxy Music, Avalon is a legit triumph, but the glam rock era just...it’s like a James Bond film, all glitz and cheeky action in service of what exactly? The vibe and feel, I can see how that all must’ve been exciting for a brief window, but even then, was it all that outside of the UK? Listening to these records, which I am clamouring to find catchy songs or hooky melodies anywhere, it’s again that phenomenon of being told about a really crazy party someone went to that defined their entire personality. That Ferry, a working class-born striver himself would eventually become a lite-Tory really completes the picture of sophistication’s empty promise.
Meh
In Every Dream Home a Heartache - хороша пісня, все інше не зачепило
Hints of things I like, but it’s a struggle to enjoy this jumbled mess.
I'm not sure what to make of this. Did I like it? No idea, but O dint hate it either. I don't know much about Glam Rock, if this is what it was. But its a million times better than the Bay City Rollers.
Very reminiscent of Rocky Horror and not in a good way. Just not my taste.
Not good
Listening session: february 7th, while going for a walk Listened to before: no Thoughts: this album reminded me of Frank-N-Furter at some points but unfortunately not in a really positive way Favourite track: Editions Of You
not my style
Completely ok, but not something I would go back to again
I dunno. Wasn’t feeling this one.
Took me a long time to appreciate Roxy Music as I enjoyed the last album of theirs on here, but this album kind of sums up the reason it took a long time. It’s for me, just too quirky, vocals are just too off centre, too many extended mood pieces. Instruments challenge rather than anything else. I didn’t enjoy and where I thought I might actually like Roxy, I am again not sure that I do. I like what Eno took from this and went on to, but don’t like it here. Not going to be added to my collection 2 Star
I didn't really care for this.
I generally like Bryan Ferry's music, but hadn't heard this record before. Was pretty surprised and disappointed by how little I vibed with it. Just kind of dull all around.
Roxy Music is always a little strange, For Your Pleasure was all that and over dramatic, too. First and last song are good, lots of skippers through the middle. L = (1.0*s) Felt like we were listening to the soundtrack of Rocky Horror 2. J = (2.1*s) This album is not list worthy, They’ve already had two, and I think they may actually get one more b
For Your Pleasure you still get Eno dropping some weirdness. May have got a bit too weird at times though with what sounds like Dracula in a stage play. I got a kick out of "In Every Dream Home a Heartache"...an ode to the blow-up sex doll. "The Bogus Man" is an eerie tune that I dig but ran on little to o long. Roxy Music is an acquired taste and I'm not sure I developed the tongue for it yet. This one better and more memorable than Country Life (both have great album covers though)...2.45 stars.
Gek genoeg toch niet mijn ding. Teveel glamour.
Wtf lmao
Kinda boppy, but also kinda annoying
Meh, I didn't care for this
I can see its influence but I really didn't like it.
2.5/5
I went in optimistic, by the end I was wishing for the final note. There is some good energy and theatricality, but this is no Queen or Sparks.
Not a fan
Some of this sounded like a low to mediocre live recording. The rest just want very good.
Still waiting for the pleasure. I felt mostly bored.
If Bowie had a more annoying voice and worse instrumentals...
Njaaa. Okej.
dunno
Not really my thing.
I didn't care for the mix on this album and the songs were a little tougher than later albums in a way that I did t care for. Maybe it was my mood.
I like RM but this one is not that good. 2/5
This one is a little weird. not sure what i was expecting.
Big fan of Roxy and Brian Ferry, but this is before they really find their groove.
Not a fan
486/1001 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑
I can see how some people would like this album and there were some good songs but ultimately I don't think it was for me.
I like Brian Eno but this just didn't do it for me
Whoa I'm really not enjoying this. Maybe I'm in a weird mood today, or under the weather, but this is really getting behind my eyes. Maybe I need to go back into it, because I can hear where a ton of bands have gotten inspiration from this music, but it's hard to listen to right now.
This is like listening to some weird crooner trying to imitate Bowie and somehow they sound more like Pod-Era Ween, but not in a good way. Ween did it somewhat ironically. These guys are serious. In one song, dude is listing different styles of houses (ranch, duplex, etc..) and then goes on to song about how his blow up doll is THE BEST THING TO EVER HAPPEN TO HIM! What the hell?! I DID enjoy one song: Grey Lagoons. That was a banger. The rest were not my thing. Gave me some good unexpected comedy in the morning time though.
Great singles with lots of filler. The Greatest Hits is all you need from Roxy.
I'm listening to this weird album on Halloween. Enough said.
This was not for my pleasure.
Got nothing to say about this one
Good mellow music.
I found this a bit boring.
