Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Did not really like this. Made me think it was made for some type of musical

At first, I thought this was really centered towards the demographic that enjoys rocky horror picture show and maybe musicals. That's not me. As the album went on, I could see the similarities to people like David Bowie and Talking Heads. Overall, this just wasn't superior. It's odd and bizarre. I wouldn't be surprised if Viagra Boys took some inspiration from this which is cool. I just don't think it was very good.

For a band that are such a household name, I don't think I have ever heard a song from Roxy Music, or that I would even have been able to name a song by them. Now, having heard this album, I am unimpressed. I would not have said that Brian Eno was in this band, but once I was told I can hear him. Overall, nothing special for me.

This art rock album has a sleek yet experimental energy stemming with annoyingly glamorous vocals, entertaining lush keyboards, and jagged guitars wrapped in stylish, atmospheric arrangements that blur pop allure with avant-garde edge.

I don't get it. At all.

Not one of their best and nowhere near the quality of Avalon. Was not a fan of this disconnected series of songs. Not worth a second listen.

Not a fan. Sounded like Freddie Mercury meets Jello Biafra

I’ve heard of, but never listened to Roxy Music, so when I saw the cover I was intrigued. Sadly that is where my intrigue ended, as I didn’t even make it to the end of the album. It was uninteresting as hell, outside of one song (I can’t remember which) that had me moving my leg to the beat. I’m starting to realize I REALLY don’t like a lot of music by British artists, especially the further back in time the music goes.

Just another Brian Eno project I didn’t care for.

Beetje rare, aanstellerige jarentachtigmuziek.

Oooohh. Th'way you look.

1 Part Rocky Horror Picture Show, 1 Part Nick Cave, 1 Part WTF. I didn't hate this album, but listening to it was like trying to scratch an itch that I didn't have. Now my brain is red and irritated.

I should start giving these reviews a title. This one is called: "It insists upon itself." I don't know what it is about Roxy Music, but it just hits me wrong. Brian Ferry's voice mainly. The tremolos, the up-close recording, the histrionics, the choked falsetto, just all this... trickery. He also always feels a wee bit off-key. Obnoxious for me. But the guitar work here is great (when you can hear it), and anything with Eno automatically gets some love from me. I understand the novel ideas here, you know, developing a glam style or maybe sitting solidly in the center of a glam style ("a glam style" is one of the variants of glam that are less cogent even than Mott The Hoople). Dumb themes (Inflatable Doll? C'mon) and ham-fisted drumming are not very glamorous, as it were. I'm going to regret using "It insists upon itself" for this one, because I'm pretty sure there are some albums coming up that insist much more than this.

At least they tried.

Underwhelming, experimental but clashed for me. I only really liked In Every Dream Home a Heartache

It's something.

Not really into it. Urge to skip tracks is strong with this one.

I liked the first half of the album... Then a couple 7-9 minute songs that go nowhere dropped it down a notch.

Didn't like it. Glam rock is just boring to my ears. I zoned out until the last song.

I had preconceived ideas about Roxy Music that were much more positive than what I heard throughout the course of this album. It’s nothing like their upbeat classic rock radio hits.

I find their style of writing definetly more abstract then a lot of other artists. Nothing, no song stood out greatly to me, but still enjoyable in the background.

This is the most overrated band ever! Two stars for the cover

I feel like I should appreciate this more but it sounded like the musical equivalent of community theatre.

this is not for my pleasure

Not too bad. I liked a couple songs

As I go through this list I'm learning I don't like anything that Brian Eno touches. This was my first Roxy Music album, and I wasn't impressed. This was boring but also grating at the same time. I didn't hate the album, but I didn't care for it either, and there's zero replay value in this for me. While I generally have enjoyed this more than Brian Eno's solo stuff, I can't say I'm looking forward to more Roxy Music albums.

Not for me.

Was meant for my pleasure, but got on my nerves instead. The album is like a soup that hasn't been cooked enough. The ingredients aren't wrong in themselves, but they don't form a whole.

Edition of you was kind of a cool song. Otherwise very difficult album to finish. Obvious art school mediocre experimental stuff

Better than I thought. Did get a little long towards the end

Mér fannst þetta nú ekkert eitthvað sérstaklega spes. Eiginlega bara leiðinlegt. Fékk á tilfinninguna að þetta væri einhver einn náungi að búa til tónlist og að allir vinir hans hvöttu hann áfram því hann var betri en þeir og svo myndaðist svona pínulítið költ í kringum hann sem smitaðist út fyrir vinahópinn.

Not sure if I have ever heard this band. Interesting stuff. A little to theatrical/dramatic music for me.

Goddamnit.

basically sounds like dracula tried to release an art rock album under a pseudonym and totally bombed

Long weird songs with bad singing

Good background music but not much more going for it

It all just bled together, I don’t think I could pinpoint a single song

2+ Stars (6/15)

I liked how short it was. Not my jam

I appreciated this album without enjoying it all that much. The music wasn't very accessible for me. Grey Lagoons was the clear standout track for me - outside of that this was all impressive but just not for me.

Cover: 7 Ok overall. Seems to be another experimental music album. There's only one, maybe two songs that I liked but nothing special.

A shame. I've always loved In Every Dream Home a Heartache and I thought they might have some similarly interesting music. Do the Strand is fun, but not at the same level of woah. 2/5 stars.

Not totally devoid of value, but not really my style

Roxy Music is kind of like The Velvet Underground for me. They have a couple great songs. But I think I like the idea of Roxy Music more than I like Roxy Music. And both of those bands have split personalities. Where some music doesn’t even resemble other music. From the same band.

Theater kid music in a way that REALLy did not resonate with me

It was fine

Never liked this band. Again, no fan of Eno. But the cover on their 4th album sold a lot of records! Yes, I bought it used for a dime back in the late 70’s. Best thing they ever did.

Never got into Roxy Music - it was okay - better than I thought it would be.

It was ok

Vocals were terrible, music was annoying, really not much to like about this album except the intriguing artwork.

Not the Bryan Ferry of "Let's Stick Together" or "Slave To Love" nor the Roxy Music of "Love Is The Drug" that I was used to, this is quite out there by comparison. Much warbling from Ferry, like a bad Elvis impression at times, and Brian Eno doing Brian Eno things on the synths. But it's unsure what it wants to be, part glam, part prog, part punk...

I wanted to like this but The Bogus Man was 9 minutes long

High variance. Some good tracks but some really sloggy ones featuring too much sludgy synth.

lame, long, and an audible chore to sit through. its just not good, the vocals are wonky, some of the notes are just stretched out wayyy too long, and the songwriting itself is just limp.

I'll say what I said of their debut album: Roxy Music, at least in this stage of their career, seems to be a "weird-for-the-sake-of-weird" kind of band. But unlike their self-titled debut, For Your Pleasure is near-impossible to latch onto or to remember the next day. And I wasn't even drunk when I listened to this. Maybe it would've done better if I was. Otherwise, I have very little new to say about Roxy Music, so I'll paste in my earlier review. The singing isn't great. It's wild, wobbly, and difficult to latch onto as a listener. There's little in the way of melody or catchy, head-nodding hooks. The vibes are fun, sure, but is this really something you'd want to put on for your friends? Does this music work in any setting, social or otherwise, other than scrolling through Spotify in search of quirky post-Summer-Of-Love oddities? I guess it could fit into the underground scene, but it also sounds a bit like punk (which is anything but underground) and perhaps art rock à la Brian Eno. (Edit: it turns out Brian Eno is actually in the band, and now I feel equal parts smart and silly.) Another reviewer wrote that they initially hated the album for "the SQUEEK SQUUUANK SQUORK that Brian Eno felt like he had to apply to the most basic harmonica, and Bryan Ferry's warbling, death bird cry". It was only many years later that they finally started "getting" the album. (I call this the Trout Mask Replica effect.) You tell me: is this really the sign of a "good" album? 2/5 Key tracks: In Every Dream Home A Heartache

Instrumentation was great. But his voice didn’t work for me at all. Sounded like the guy from Forgetting Sarah Marshall. But really great guitar, sax and others throughout. Was the redeeming quality 4/10

Not for me

not the best album by roxy music, but it was okay

isch mir altgebacken und boring imecho. Vlt u nur weg mangelnder ziit so überecho.

Just kind of boring. Not for me. 2/5 Won’t listen again

Not really for me. Never liked Bryan Ferry’s voice.

Gear: Abyss DIANA MR Artwork: 🐈‍⬛👱‍♀️⬛ Production: 🤔😐👍 Music: 🎧😐🕰️🤔🚫👋😒 Rating: 🐈‍⬛🐈‍⬛/5

Eh, not great.

Sort of interesting, but in the unlikely event I needed to listen to a Roxy Music album, it wouldn't be this one.

This was not a great album, there were a few times that the songs could have been written and performed by Flight of the Conchords... just some interesting and at times cheesy arrangements and lyrics..

This was highly unexpected. I loved Avalon when I discovered it a few years after everyone else in the 80s. I thought I would love this too. Nope.

#548. A bit bland and uninteresting, mostly. 2/5: meh

i cant stand this music pls stop

It's fine. I wasn't offended by listening to it. Do the Strand Beauty Queen Strictly Confidential Editions of You In Every Dream Home a Heartache- weird prog rock finish The Bogus Man Grey Lagoons For Your Pleasure

I've run out of things to say about Roxy Music, I'm glad Brian Eno moved on.

I thought I might like it then every song was the same

Had high expectations. Best songs sounded like Bowie and the rest did not stand out,

I think this is the 3rd Roxy Music album I’ve listened to since I’ve taken part in this challenge. Are they the best band in the world or something? I don’t get it. All in all, it’s not terrible but it’s not good. I don’t recall and moments that may have made me think differently. I’m still not a fan Choice cut: The Bogus Man

Don’t know why I liked the first Roxy Music album I listened to so much. Because every other one on this list has been annoying. 2/5

I own a vinyl copy which I never listen to. Checking in as part of the challenge reminded me why: This record is truely awful. The strand is okay, but then matters quickly worsen: The way guitar, keyboard and saxophone are playing against each other rather than together just annoys me. It’s probably meant to be experimental and ground breaking at the time, but today it’s a true torture. The only thing I like about this is the artwork - the cover is hot to this day.

This was dullllll. I thought the Roxy Music album I got before this (Country Life) was pretty mid but this is worse.

I didn't like the vocals at all. The instrumental is ok at best.

Pretty good sound.

That's not my taste in musi

Add Roxy Music to my list of acclaimed / influential bands that I don't get. Can't get on board with Bryan Ferry's vocal style and the songs just don't resonate with me at all

not at all pleasurable actually!! 3/10

This sounded like a Rocky Horror Picture Show knockoff.

Some good tracks but showing its age now.

Definitely not my own pleasure.

Very meh. Can't say I liked this one.

Did not like it. has lots of very forgettable tracks...

Trying too hard? It was annoying at times. 4/10

this album sounded very experimental-I was repeatedly reminded of early Floyd and Genesis. Far from the dreamy and beloved 'more than this' and punchy declarations of 'love is the drug' this album surely a building block /necessary stepping stone to get where they did.

2.3 2x nothing too great

Other than the song, Love is the Drug, I have had no real exposure to this band prior to this album, although I had certainly heard of them. After the first few songs, this sounded like 3 stars for me, but then there were a couple of long, boring stinkers that dragged it down to a two. I am also coming to realize that I am not a Brian Eno fan, as he has been the common denominator in a few offerings on this list of 1001 albums that I have not cared for. I won’t need to hear this one again.

yuck there's some coal in the rough but it's mostly rough

2.5 stars. Didn’t particularly enjoy it although some songs were catchy

Not for me at all

liked songs: Do The Strand, Grey Lagoons Mixed feelings about this one. I like how adventurous this is in some ways, and I love a good jam session, but The Bogus Man and For Your Pleasure just don't do enough to stay interesting. Other songs with shorter runtimes are more enjoyable because they put the right length of weird in. 2.5

This was not for my pleasure, but I'm sure it was someone's. 2.5/5

This album is simply a cheap imitation of the golden era of Australian pub rock except worse in every way.

I don't know why I didn't like it, but I didn't like it. I really have nothing else to say unfortunately.

4/10 Fav tracks - Strictly confidential Least Fav - ehhhhhhhhh

A mixed bag if there ever was one. I like Brian Eno and I like Bryan Ferry, I don’t think I like them together. There’s some good stuff on here but honestly it’s such a confused album that it just gets muddled. I would say that this album is entirely forgettable except that In Every Dream Home A Heartache is by far one of the most annoying songs I’ve ever heard except for the very end where it’s good all of a sudden? Not something I would voluntarily listen to again, maybe only to be reminded how much I like later Roxy Music?

Just can’t work out what to think of this. Know one thing - it is not good.

I thought it was a pretty forgettable album. Nothing really stood out to me.

Proggy glam rock that often sounds like Jason Segal singing as Dracula and yet it’s not completely terrible which is an accomplishment. 5.2/10

Some songs were okay, some not so good

Nothing special about this one

I like Eno....don't like Roxy Music all that much. It seems like it something I could get into, but it doesn't work for me. 1.5/5

Yeah just wasn't vibing with this. Felt too played out and long.

velvety bombast and showiness

bogus man was fun

Not for me.

Yikes, music is okay. Vocals leave a lot to be desired

Not bad but mostly forgettable, apart from the weirder tracks (which I didn't like). I also hate this man's vocal delivery, it got more grating the longer I listened. I guess they're just not for me. 2.5 stars

It’s no Avlon

My favourite part of this was reading reviews from confused Americans in the comments.

Never heard this album before. Ferry's voice isn't always in tune...he sounds a lot better on later albums. Some nice moments ("Editions of You" is a standout), but overall doesn't add up to a particularly memorable album.

There were a few songs that I almost liked, but, as a whole, it was not great.

I appreciate the broad experimental approach to music, with saxophone, piano, and various Eno effects. I feel like Brian Ferry's singing is a bit over-the-top and theatrical and syrupy for my tastes though; it works in certain songs, but not for an album-full. I could see this being a Bowie album (and better). There's a lot of good work by Eno on this album. To me this album is a good example of how Roxy Music hovers around the edges of the music scene, making periodic appearances but never becoming mainstream.

Did not enjoy it. For a while I thought I was listening to Jason Segal's puppet musical from "Forgetting Sarah Marshall".

Nothing really here for me outside of a few interesting instrumental sections.

Bit too wacky for me.

This was certainly early 70’s music and not the better kind. Just question why this was on the list.

Turned into a bunch of nothingness and faded overtime

don't care for vocals, don't care for sound, don't care for the rambling, long songs that just go on & on. just not a fan & why was this on list?

Half the songs rock and half the songs are straight cheeks

Pre-listening thoughts: I have once again never heard of this band or album. However I have heard of Brian Eno and have a bad track record with his ambient stuff so reallyyyy hoping that’s not prevalent here. Post/during listening thoughts: so this is not at all ambient thank god (these words were eaten a few tracks in). It reminds me a little of Talking Heads with the sort of talk singing and funky instrumentals. Why is one track 8.5 mins oh my god (I know I should be used to long songs by now but nope sorry!). Most of it is a little too slow and long but I can get behind a few tracks 4/10 DID I NEED TO HEAR THIS BEFORE I DIE: no Fav tracks: Do the Strand, Editions of You Least fav tracks: Strictly Confidential, In Every Dream Home a Heartache (first half doesn’t quite save the second half for me), The Bogus Man (I hear you Brian eno go away!), outro of For Your Pleasure (seriously Brian Eno I’m gonna tweak) *Editing this just to say I had no idea Brian Eno produced a lot of Talking Heads' material. I feel really smart for making that connection.

This album might have convinced me I don't like Brian Eno

Favorite: In Every Dream Home A Heartache Least Favorite: The Bogus Man

Interesting - cheap Bowie with some sad horns and a harmonica breakdown at end.

I've taken two passes at this and it wasn't working. There are a few Roxy music cuts I do enjoy. I suppose I was expecting something similar to Eno's solo work but not to be.

Didn't do it for me.

Mostly boring. Not terrible but I was pretty bored through this.

Boring, uninspired, and the singer's voice was grating. Had nothing to keep me wanting to listen to the album, and was overall very generic.

Musically distinctive with some stellar production on a handful of tracks. Vocally and lyrically not compelling.

I do not enjoy the vocal style nor much of the music. Very reminiscent of Queen, a bit less campy, but campy nonetheless.

Best Song: In Every Dream Home A Heartache. The prolonged intro was nice because it gave me the hope that it was going to build into some kind of interesting crescendo. Alas, the band squandered that opportunity pretty quick. Worst Song: Strictly Confidential. Ugh, more pomp. Overall: This band is extremely not for me. Everything about this (and the two other albums of theirs I've had the misfortune of listening to on this list) has been bloated, theatrical, and self-indulgent.

What a chore. 2/5

Didn’t really grip me

I derived very little pleasure from this art school album.

I knew this was going to be garbage and it was. Normally I let Spotify keep playing after these albums just to see what it will recommend, but in this case I shut it off before my ears could be contaminated.

Never really got new wave stuff and this just does nothing for me.

a bit of a different album but i didn't hate it. kind of a weird and slightly discordant combination, but it sounds like these guys were big players in the glam rock era.

Meh? From how I've heard of Roxy Music, this is probably very influential, but it's probably been surpassed by its students.

Previously rated: Roxy Music (4/5) ************************ There were bits of some songs that I liked, but not a whole one. I was put off by the weird quivering vocal style. Some tracks seemed to really drag on. I'll have to re-listen to the other album to see what the difference was. I didn't really enjoy this one. Favorite track: Editions of You.

lord above i need to listen to more of this shit? Bryan Ferry CANNOT SING!

Very very meh

Art-rockers pur sang. 'Do the Strand', 'Editions of You' en 'In Every Dream Home A Heartache' laten een indruk achter. 6,5/10 Highlights: Editions of You In Every Dream Home A Heartache

Apart from "in every dream home..." which is an absolutely cool song, this album does nothing for me.

I respect how groundbreaking and influential they were, but the lead singer’s vocal contortions are tiresome after a couple songs

For Your Pleasure is not a noticeable record, the cover art is cool though. Turns out the model (Amanda Lear) was a muse for Salvador Dali. The panther on the cover was given so much Valium it couldn’t move so they had to 1970’s photo shop the poor thing.

Enjoyed the up-tempo songs but a couple of slower songs were over the top dramatic, like someone pharmacist over acting in a local theater group production. Specifically, beauty queen and strictly confidential ….

So I like Roxy Music – as well as Bryan Ferry & Brian Eno, so I really expected to thoroughly enjoy this album, however – it wasn’t quite as good as I thought… The audio quality was excellent, the diversity throughout the tracks was really well done, and you can really tell they were into experimentation on this album… The theme that sorta ran throughout the album for me, was that there were sections of vocals and music – that were exceptional at times, while there were others that really weren’t exceptional at all – and often times within the same song… That sonic whiplash (i.e. okay – so it doesn’t change that frantically, but there might changes 2 or 3 times within the same song) was truly a bit annoying – though I had more issues with the vocal stylings than the music… So I liked bits and parts of just about every song with the exception of “Do The Strand” – but didn’t really love any of them – the way I do all of the songs on the “Avalon” album – albeit a different style and vibe to that album… Best song on the album IMO is “Strictly Confidential” – and to be honest, I thought there would be more songs like that one on this album, but c’est la vie… Can’t get it to a 3, but would probably give it a 2.50 if I could – so a solid 2 for me…

This is the first and last time I'd ever care to hear this. Rad cover though.

I enjoy their 80s stuff more. A few songs sounded ok but I didn't like a whole lot of the other songs that much. Maybe art rock isn't my type of music.

It's.... um... different. Not terrible, but also a bit on the avant-garde style of things for my personal preference.

Average

Cool interesting voice and vocals, not something I’d put on often unfortunately. 2.3

Not for me, too art for art's sake. Very 80s sounding, but not in a good way. No thanks

I WISH IT WAS BETTER. it's literally so good i love the instrumentals i think that they're gorjeena but like the lyrics and melody just isn't doing it for me. the saxophone hit and i was sooooo shocked like no way thats so good? but then it just disappointed me.

I was never a huge Roxy Music fan, and I'm still not. Bowieesque in places (a HUGE compliment). Good. Dull in other places. Bad. Editions Of You is coolish. Too much mad brass, tho. But it has a punky vibe. Earned an extra star for this track. I find the whole thing too contrived - it's kind of painfully shiny-suited. Trying to be sophisticated. Lacks depth. I feel it to be nail polish music. I prefer a chipped nail polish: something showing signs of life beyond the pose. Aka Life on Mars?

Actually had a sneaky look at the reviews before writing my own and what Mum said hits the nail on the head for me.. just not my cup of tea! Had some moments of cool wacky production though, especially the guitar solos on Editions of You. Favourite track: Editions Of You

For Your Pleasure is a mix of good glam rock and bad glam rock, other acts did the genre better and this isn't really them at their best selves either. The first couple of tracks are rubbish, then it gets better for a bit and Editions of You and In Every Dream Home A Heartache are enjoyable, but the back half/side two aren't up to much, like The Bogus Man is very bad. I never really get on with Bryan Ferry's voice either, and the whole thing doesn't deserve much better than a 2.

This was not in fact a pleasure. Was a bit of a drag really, perked up a bit in the middle with Editions Of You and In Every Dream Home A Heartache, but the end was pretty painful, long, drawn-out songs without much to them in the first place. That middle section elevates it to a 2.

Roxy feels like a band I should like but I don’t

I don't get it. This is the third Roxy Music album on the 1001 list so far. One was enough and even that one was mediocre. This was a chore to get through.

What a horrible saxophone song to lead off. Let's be honest, saxophone does not belong in rock songs. Of course, every rule requires exceptions to prove it. On this point, we have Baker Street, Harden My Heart and Still Sane (Carolyn Mas). OK, I kid about the third. After track 2, I'm at a loss - I feel that even Bryan Ferry's dulcet tones and heavy vibrato can't save this album. Of all the Roxy Music albums, this is the one you insist I must listen to before I die? Come on. This is rubbish. But wait, it gets better... or does it? Three tracks in a row that might get better with age, followed by three filler tracks that get progressively worse as I listen, and more yucky saxophone. Some judicious editing should have reduced this to a half-decent Maxi-Single containing "Strictly Confidential" and "Editions of You" on Side A, and "In Every Dream Home A Heartache" on Side B. This is a band that was crying out for an editor.

echoing all the other commenters that I wish this album went as hard as the cover.

meh. it started off as kind of a rocky horror/david bowie/meatloaf sort of sound and energy, but quickly fell apart after that. the tracks were all way too long and just not that interesting or enjoyable to listen to. the album cover is also kind of weird, especially knowing what the music contained therein sounds like - i expected hair metal or something with a cover like that, idk. not going to revisit this one. favorites: do the strand, beauty queen, editions of you

Not terrible

I was hoping this album would be as good as their first one, but it really didn't catch me in the same way. I don't think I would seek this one out again, honestly.

This one didn't do much for me, which is sad because I really liked the other Roxy Music we heard. It wasn't bad, by any means, but just a bit boring. 2.49/5

I had forgotten why I didn't like it in 1974 either. Thanks for the reminder. :)

didnt really enjoy it

Another album I've listened before, which I know is considered a great album..... Not for me though! Iconic album cover Think the best track is editions of you is the best track. I'm just not a fan of the synthy sound really. This must be a pretty early example of it to be fair

Love the album cover. This guy's voice is... not great. It's kinda weird and not in a way I particularly enjoy. Skipped several songs. 2/5

Other than "In Every Dream Home a Heartache," this is pretty unlistenable for me. It's avant garde, and a good bit of it is just noise. Not for me.

2.5 I liked the weirdness of it but most the songs seemed to lose their way at points

Roxy Music: War, ist und wird nie meine Musik. Auch wenn es handwerklich gut gemacht wurde: Allein das Covver für 1973 gibt von mir einen Stern.

I wanted to like it and appreciate elements of the album but it feels like something is missing for me to really enjoy it and want to return to it. I understand the influence they would have especially knowing that Brian Eno and Bryan Ferry would go on to do their own thing and the people they would work with but as an album this was okay to me. It really highlights how the right pieces have to come together for it to be great. 2.5/5

Not my jam. Not awful. Not good. Glam punk rock zzzzzzz. After Leonard Cohen the the day, the monotone baritone vocal styling's were tiring.

There are hints of this that are super ahead of their time, often times it's mixed with some subpar vocals and overly experimental stuff from Eno. When the band reigns in the art rock side, the glam rock is pretty good. I just can't get over the vocal, it really holds it back from being interesting. If Bowie was on this jaunt he might just make it gold.

mehhh idk i think i listened to their debut a bit ago and i feel the same its just okay 2.5/5

Yeah not a huge fan of this. like it better than the other ones I've rated 2 but not as much as most of my other 3 rated songs. sorry Roxy music. Definitely some alright songs tho

I don't get it

Eno makes a bad lounge act sound like they might be interesting. But even he has limits. Ferry isn't even a good crooner. He's a pretentionus, slimy git. We can all agree they make good almbum covers though.

Another album that I have no interest in listening to a second time

Do The Strand

Not my kinda thing

Really whacky style but catch some traction at times. One hit.

a 2 but a fun 2. could i write poetry to this? n

The music is pretty good, but Bryan Ferry's over-the-top vocal gymnastics have aways gotten on my nerves. If he just sang it straight, this would be an excellent Glam-slash-proto-New Wave album. Instead, I sounds pretty hokey. Two and one-half stars, gaining a half-star because Bryan Ferry does seem like a really cool dude, goofy vocals aside.

Really was hoping I would like this more. At best 2.5 stars

I enjoy weirdo art rock like this. This is a good album, but it's not like I'm going to seek it out again.

Ughh what is idealist?

This whole album was just a bunch of sounds, or noises in some cases even, it was a very disorienting experience, there was only one good bit, I think during the first song, where there was a pleasant-sounding experience. Update - the second to last song was actually pretty good most of the time, so that's why it's 2 stars and not less, but then the last song ruined everything again.

What a weird album. I've never heard any of these songs before. I actually found myself enjoying a lot of the instruments, there's some great guitar, keyboard, and sax solos. The new-wave-esque vocals are too much though and really detract from the instrumentals. 4.5/10 (2.25/5)

Lots of variety and experimentation. I like a lot of the instrumentation and sounds on this, and it's an ambitious album. However it just doesn't connect with me much overall.

I remember liking their first album, but I don't like this one.

So, I just couldn't figure out anything likeable or interesting about this album. It's just kind of warbly and annoying. It's the third Roxy Music album in this project, and I hate to admit I just don't get it. Love the cover, though!

I’m wasn’t expecting to be a fan of this one and I was not. It wasn’t all horrible, but none of it really interested me and some of it irritated me.

Oof. My earholes did not like this.

The album cover suggests -1/5, but the content was okayish.

Meget anerledes musik.... Meget eksperimenterende..

Surprisingly good.

Yea it’s fine

Synthesizer is my least favorite musical style. Give me a big brass section any day but keep your synth and emo whining. For Your Pleasure at about 3 min in did start to give me Phish space drums vibes. Wonder if they were an influence.

Did not enjoy. Too full fat

not my style but im sure others would definitely appreciate this type of music

Favourite song - Do the strand

Stop trying to make sax happen. I've never gotten the hype with these guys despite giving it a good go a few times. They're like a band made from the most annoying bits of David Bowie's discography and a twist of prog-rock fussiness. The operatic singing doesn't do it for me, the guitar tone is like a beginner dialing a DS1 to 10, the compositions get in their own way and never let any rhythm build up. Somehow the sax ends up being the best bit.

I didn’t hate this like I thought I was going to at first listen. Some of the tracks got a little jam feel to it. Not sure I’d put it in regular rotation but wasn’t a bad Sunday listen.

This band has always been hard for me to fully parse and I think that is to their credit even if it means I find their output to be uneven. There are some highs on this record for me in terms of affecting, well-crafted music and then there are some songs that I barely register. In conclusion, "For Your Pleasure" is a land of contrasts — and a metonymy of their whole output.

boring as usual

Meh. A bit like Dracula singing pop music-interesting but not for me all that much

The few decent guitar runs were very too infrequent to redeem this very mediocre album. The vocals are meh. Just a very meh album.

I saw Roxy Music and thought, "Excellent, I like Roxy Music." Unfortunately, I did not like this album. Nothing grabbed me at all.

I usually like anything Brian Eno was involved in, but this might be the first exception. I'm not into glam so if this was a great album, it was lost on me. I had a coworker in the car for the last two songs and at one point, he asked me, "They really think you needed to hear this before you die?"

boYySsSS 4/10

I enjoyed maybe 40 percent of this. But the 60 percent I did not enjoy I *really* did not enjoy. So like... 0--no like---------|--like----------10

Listened Before? N Another album that I just found okay. Nothing sticks out here. This list may be too long.... Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: In Every Dream Home A Heartache

Not great and a band I had never heard of, however when I went on to their most popular streams there were a bunch of songs I had on playlists that had been covered by other bands.

Ugh. I wanted to like this album, but it was just ok for me. Some of the songs I felt like Dr. Frank-n-furter was singing. 🤣😂 It was really distracting. There were a couple tunes I enjoyed, but overall I found this album all over the place and just 'meh'. There was at least one tune that gave me a techno/rave vibe which was kinda cool given the time this was made, but it was also kinda annoying, because, well, techno. 😂

Really dislike the vocals

Nope, didn’t like, odd, vocals mental

Bad, but not the worst I have listened to

Not my jam. Much too glam.

Glupi synth rock koji su svi drugi nakon njih napravili bolje.

I was just thinking about Brian Eno the other day as I was listening to some New Wave stuff that he influenced. You’d think that the combination of Eno and Ferry would make this album untouchable and yet - it’s alright, yeah.

I really don’t like Roxy Music much. I think it’s Bryan Ferry’s vocals. And the The Bogus Man was just far too long. And I love the name Tara, but I don’t need to hear it repeated fifty billion times.

I remember some of their music from the 80s, which I didn't very much care for, and I knew they had been around for a while but I hadn't listened to their earlier work like this album. It's more interesting than their later stuff, kind of Bowie-esque. It's okay. I don't expect I'll be reaching for it again any time too soon, though.

i couldn't help but think of david bowie while listening to this album. for your pleasure was released the year after bowie's the rise and fall of ziggy stardust and the spiders from mars, and bowie must have provided some influence to roxy music. for your pleasure has that artsy, experimental vibe that was bowie's sound around this time. because of this unfortunate comparison, this album was bland as a whole to my ears. i did enjoy "do the strand" quite a lot; the horns present in a glam rock song was unexpected but delightful. to be honest, i had no idea brian eno didn't begin his career as a music producer but was himself involved in creating music as a musician in a band. to learn about eno's beginnings with art rock was fascinating; his work with bands like talking heads or U2 makes a lot of sense, but his own musical work did evolve over the years to stray from the glam rock found on this album.

So here's the thing: I wasn't particularly wowed by this album. I didn't think it was anything worth "writing home" about. That said, I was very intrigued by the execution here. Everything was incredibly, uniquely done, and I found it surprising that this album came out in 1973. The album itself didn't really do it for me. What I WILL say, is that I am intrigued with this band, looking at some of their work and album covers from across their discography. Despite not being particularly wooed by this album, I AM curious about this band; I think I will check out their greatest hits and get a wider view of who they are. So that's something!

This album was almost a dud if it wasn’t for The Bogus Man.

I know Roxy Music was really influential, but it holds zero appeal for me. Well crafted and executed songs bump this up a notch.

Para mim faz sentido o Brian Eno ter saído da banda depois deste disco.

No. False. I reject the assertion that I needed to listen to this before I die. This is so different from the other Roxy music albums on this list. It's chaotic, disconnected, pretentious, and yet somehow still boring. Perhaps more aggravating, the guitars and vocal lines seem more often than not to be at odds with each other. Fighting each other for dominance almost. In fact, none of the instruments seem to be locked in with each other most of the time. It's like a bunch of people playing at the same time but not playing together. The only thing saving this from a failing score is the sheer talent of all of the musicians involved. How they ended up making such a mess of an album when the rest of their albums are pretty decent is a mystery to me. How it ended up on this list when there are already two great albums by the same band on the list is an even bigger mystery.

Meh. Nothing here I found clicking for me

I’ve tried to listen to this before. It seems like something I’d like but no part of it clicked with me. The songs felt long and aimless, and I really didn’t like Ferry’s singing voice. The last track was really quite annoying.

Pfff zware kost voor mij; Allemaal te bombastisch op de verkeerde manier.

I generally like Roxy Music but I listened to this album 2-3 times and the only time i found myself paying attention was during "In Every Dream Home A Heartbrake" which is one weird song. Thought it was only weird first but I have grown to like it. Nothing else really left any impression, maybe the other songs would go the way of "In Every Dream Home A Heartbrake" but for now it gets a two. Killer album artwork though.

Thought this was pretty shit and I don’t usually mind a bit of Roxy Music.

Can't stand Bryan Ferry's vocals, the music itself is ok.

Poxy Music

Too avant garde for what I anticipated. Some very weird choices, drawn out.

The more I listen to Roxy Music, the more I don't like them

This wasn’t terrible.

Don't really get it. Surprised to read Brian Eno was in the band as I liked a lot of stuff he'd produced. First couple of tracks were grating, got a bit better in the middle and some bits at the end. Singer was a bit crap. One to forget about.

Monsieur Eno pas toujours dans des bons coups

c'est un peu raté

Album so lala

Favorite Track: "Editions Of You"/ "In Every Dream Home A Heartache" Unfortunately, the rest of the album is not convincing. Nevertheless, Bryan Ferry's voice is great, but I prefer the 80's Roxy Music.

One of these bands that are cool to love but I just can't get into

Not bad, nothing memorable.

Was expecting something else. This was quite jarring. Yes it's arty. Yes it's influential. Yes the musicianship is sound. But I couldn't get into it. Was kind of disappointed overall.

Bryan Ferry's voice lends itself much better to Roxy Musics later material - here it is just wasted talent. The cover photo is outstanding, but that's about it. Productionwise, everything is alright, but the one important thing missing are some good songs. You could play Where's Waldo with the memorable hooks you wish were there. 2/5

Doesn't quite resonate with me

I hear the foundations of some of my fave artist in this scene on these tracks. But really hated this album at the same time. One good track as far as I’m concerned in Grey Lagoons Only get 2 stars because it influenced some others to make good albums later

Sounded ahead of it’s time.

Wasn't bad, but somehow for me it lacks sth.

Some great, some forgettable. Fun record in places. ‘Editions of you’ was a toe tapper and ‘In every house…’ was a great gothic sounding track. Whole album got more experimental as it went on.

Nice guitar sound but dull vocals

A pretty terribly named album if you ask me. This album was in the bad to okay range. I was able to listen to some of it without issues but there were a few songs that I loathed. The definition of music often varies when it comes to albums like this where the worst singing and guitar noises come to life. Remove a couple songs and this album is tolerable but overall not for my pleasure. 4.3/10

Not my thing

Ehhh… there are some cool moments but it feels a bit try-hard to me. Also the lead singer’s voice is a bit annoying. The album shines in its instrumentals/production.

I just found this album outright weird. The vocals from Ferry are so theatrical to the point where it distracts from anything else going on

2 I haven’t listened to much Roxy Music, but in listening to this album, right off the bat I can tell you that Talking Heads owe a lot to these guys - for better or for worse. Like Talking Heads, this album has its moments, but other times it comes off feeling like pretentious art pop with an unbearably annoying singer. Editions of You was a fun rockout song, but In Every Dream Home a Heartache was a lot of overdramatic bullshit, and the funk bassline on The Bogus Man isn’t quite catchy enough for the song to be anywhere near as half as long as it is, especially when compounded with the wailing vocals. Speaking of In Every Dream Home a Heartache, I saw a few people putting their nose up at it for being a love song about a blow-up doll. I don’t mind that aspect of it conceptually, but I gotta say The Police did it a lot better on Be My Girl - Sally from their debut (Did that album make the list?? It better have, it’s better than this). Supposedly Morrissey called this the only “truly great British album”, and as is the case with most other of his opinions, I’m going to have to disagree with that here too.

pretentious

Meh? I barely remember listening to this album

It was kind of meh. Didn't feel like a lot of substance here

Heel aparte muziek. Het is veel zweveriger dan pop. Ik vind dat matig. Ook de zang is niet helemaal leuk. **

PLEASE NO MORE ENGLISH GARBAGE. 2/5.

Do the strand- mostly just nonsense and not even particularly catchy Beauty queen- showed a lot more promise than it had Strictly confidential- This was quite dull Editions of you- Bit more upbeat/enjoyable, lyrics seem like afterthought at points👍 In every dream home a heartache- this was pretty funny ngl 👍 The bogus man- V long instrumental outro that doesn’t add much Grey lagoon- Fun track, saxophones a bit unsubtle👍 For your pleasure- Again another unnecessary drawn out instrumental Am I too picky?? This didn’t do much for me, just seemed overdrawn and bloated in length for some songs 2/5

If this list is going to supply music I don’t especially care for, this is a good way to do it- this CD is at least interesting and different, if not particularly good. This CD has some nice aspects. It’s certainly creative, and Roxy has sort of a unique sound. It has also had a good diversity of sound- a lot of brass, lots of keys, strong rhythm section, nice mix of moods. And it’s generally upbeat and it sounds like the band is having fun. The problem is that I mostly just find it abrasive to listen to. Their singer kinda sucks, and they don’t do a good job backing him up- there’s a fairly strong emphasis on other melodic voices instrumentally, but almost no emphasis on harmony. Which means the singer is mostly just left alone out there. On the instrumental melodic bits, Roxy has a bad habit for playing some awful dissonant shit. “Editions of You” is probably the strongest track on the CD, certainly the catchiest, but the solos are awful, they just ruin it for me. And I think their singer’s strength is supposed to be his weird nonsensical lyrics (certainly not his range or timbre), but I really do not care about that- so to me he just sounds like a goober with an abrasive voice. Then their songwriting can be kind of dull. They go for more of a groove style, which I find gets really old really fast if you’re not good at it. On the 2nd half, “Every Dream Home…” and “Bogus Man” especially, they have whole songs that are 4-minute repetitions of the same 3-second phrase. Unless you’re brilliant at that, it just doesn’t work, and this CD really starts to sag around then.

An interesting one for sure, good example of some music from the 70’s as it sounded like a bunch of noises put together. Nothing too memorable and can’t say it’s stood the test of time but you can still respect the album for what it is.

Art rock with hint of prog. Never amazed me, feels a little like it doesn’t hold up. Still listenable, musically interesting, vocals not so much

Blaah, nyt ei ollut edes hienoa kansikuvaa.

Joutavaa

This album hasn't changed any of my feelings about Roxy Music, slightly kookie art school cabaret music with wobbly, bleated vocals. Not absolutely awful, but not for me.

Brian eno ha ba gjort all musik tydligen

Not for me. Would not listen again.

Eh, not my style.

In theory I like glam rock, but an album all in one sitting is too much for me. Give me the greatest hits in small doses.
