Reviews (page 5 of 7)

This was a nice surprise. Really solid folk with an absolute heater tucked away in the middle, Cajun Woman, that sticks out like a sore thumb but is a rollicking good time, sporting some cool lap steel (I think?) 3.5/5

Did an Autopsy on this album and time just got away from me. Who Knows Where the Time Goes?

i liked this :) not sure i'd rush to listen to it again but it was nice and i loved the vocals. also the album cover is so funny.

The first half of the album sounded like music you'd hear at a medieval reenactment. Hated it The second half was completely different and I loved it! So super hard to rate for me personally so I'll go down the middle 3 ⭐️

Folksy, reminds me of Joan Baez but with identity of its own. A whole album is a lot

I wish this whole album sounded like the song Where Did All The Time Go because that is such a magnifying surrounded by just decent songs written by Dylan and performed decently as well.

i couldnt get into this

This one is new to me. The marriage of folk and rock/pop in 1969, a successful British band of the time has gone largely forgotten. It’s a product of its time but lacking glamour and sparkle to keep it in the public memory nearly 60 years later.

Unhalfbricking is warm, pleasant, and more compositionally dense than I thought. Side A of this album feels really smart and intricate, almost (to my ear) ending up somewhere proggy at times. And this complexity is used very effectively, Fairport Convention has really precise control over the emotional palette that these songs invoke: From the rootsy (and Bob Dylan written) Si Tu Dois Partir, to more atmospheric pieces like Genesis Hall and A Sailor's Life. I will say that after A Sailor's Life, the songs get a little more straight forward, not bad, just a little less interesting than the first side's material. Overall, this surprised me, it has a pretty unique feel for a UK folk rock album, and I think the writing is generally very strong. It also just gives off good vibes, it's very warm sounding music, even at its coldest.

Not bad, but this didn’t really stand out for me.

Sounds very ahead of it's time

Favourites: Genesis Hall, Autopsy, A Sailor's Life, Who Knows Where The Time Goes?, Percy's Song, Million Dollar Bash

Truly never heard of these guys. At first glance of the name of the band, I thought it was going to be a disco band of some sort, definitely not a folk rock band. I respect it, not for me though.

It's alright. She's got a pretty voice, and I dug their blend of British folk and old-timey American folk, but I did not get much out of it beyond being calmed a bit while listening

3.3 good folk w hints of electric over it overall slower feel and electric to add spice

I imagine this is what is played in the pubs in more rural areas. It has that old timey cozy feel to it. Decent enough album if your in for a smaller feel like that.

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Can’t say I’ve ever listened to an album by these guys. Some seems standard 60’s folk and others are a bit more rocking. One track is over 11 minutes. Overall, not too bad. Vocals are a little bit of the time though.

had too high of expectations for this one from hearing of it as a Richard Thompson highlight some cool stuff. overall only just fine. American folk music was a better basis for rock n roll because it had the dweebiness punched out of it already before the electric guitar arrived.

It’s a real uphill battle for me to enjoy any kinda old time English folk music. When I saw this one, I thought “Never have I been so sure of a one star, I should just skip it”. But I am an honest and self-hating man, and I have never skipped one yet. You know what? Kind of good. Very good production. Some neat creative choices. Not excruciating to listen to. How about that.

Not really sure why this is on a greatest albums list? I liked listening to it, but it didn't shatter me. Nice, friendly. Still sounds a bit Americal to me in places, but maybe it was chosen because it was a switch to re-acceptance of English folk?

Folk/Folk Rock. Lead singer Has kind of a Janis Joplin mixed with Joan Baez sound. The band as a whole has kind of a Byrds or CSNY feel. Enjoyable album. There’s a couple Dylan covers here. Notable songs include Who Knows Where The Time Goes, Dear Landlord, The Ballad of Easy Rider.

A folk band met a jam band, they had a little baby and named it Fairport Convention.

Pretty good folk rock. Probably would buy.

Not averse to a bit of folk, and this lot are one of the better bands. It's a decent album, performed well. Its ok.worth a 3

Liked more than I expected to though sometimes felt like I was at a renaissance fair Fav song: Percy's Song (really good for me)

Not bad. Not super crazy about the female vocalist, but I enjoyed the album overall and the musicianship was solid throughout.

ni bien ni mal, normalillo🫡 me he guardado una canción

Didn’t have lots of thoughts about this, it was fine enough folk rock.

Another cross-pond folk album that I like more than I might've expected. It has some rock qualities as well, which I think made it more suitable for my tastes. It's a well-rounded effort and an enjoyable listen. I liked the style of the music and the vocals. Each track was distinct enough from the one before it to keep my interest throughout. There were a bunch of covers on it, most of Dylan songs (that apparently were unreleased before). They were good enough, and I thought the originals were pretty good too. I even liked the 11-minute rendition of A Sailor's Life well enough. There are a few reasons I don't rank this higher. As noted, a lot of it is covers/unoriginal, which is always a knock for me. Also, it didn't seem like it really came close to greatness. It was pretty good, but for me bordered closer to fine/OK most of the time. While I enjoyed it, I didn't see it as much more than that. As a whole, it was a pleasant listen and a solid album. Overall: 2.9/5

Not bad

This was quite a pleasant listen, having never heard of this group as well as not having listened to much music from this time. The vocals are definitely quite good, however I did prefer them employed in the more sombre, slower songs which diden't make a majority appearance on this album in exchange for more upbeat tunes along the lines of "Million Dollar Bash", and etc. As such, I will give this album a 3/5.

I wasn't sure what to expect, turned out very pleasant, quite lovely.

I liked the beginning of this album more than I thought I would, but it wore out by the end. 2.5

This wasn't as bad as I was afraid of another Fairport Convention album being, I don't necessarily know that I liked it. A true 2.5. Flipped a coin to round it.

Pretty good

Unhalfbricking took me a minute to get into. This is a pretty chill album. It was a lot slower than I was expecting, but that's not a negative comment. Once it finds its footing, it's a great listen. Sandy Denny has a really captivating voice (and I learned that she is the female vocalist on Zeppelin's "The Battle of Evermore" which is maybe common knowledge, but that's awesome) and it's a shame that the world lost her far too soon. Standouts for me were "Autopsy" and "A Sailor's Life" - this one really blew me away. This album has some really good highs, and some more mediocre moments. It's a nice listen. I think its a 7/10 for me, so just barely misses out on 4 stars.

Britisk folk musik - med elektrisk lyd

Fue de menos a más. No me disgustó. Requiere más escuchas para ver si conecto

This was fine. Pleasant. Evoked no big emotions from me. The songs kind of blended into each other. Folky

Nice blend of English and American folk - though not sure where the Cajun influences came from that was also interesting.

This was a fine listen, it kind of just flew by really fast and I didn’t really get to pay attention to it. Fairport Convention is one of those bands I should really like, but I never really bother to listen to them. Will probably need a relisten for a fairer rating.

I didn't think I was going to like this, but it's actually pretty good.

I listened to this the other day while working. I can't remember a single moment of it. Can't have been that exciting.

I get why people would like this. The singer is good and it's well recorded. There were moments I enjoyed but this is just not for me.

Fav: Cajun Woman Least Fav: Million Dollar Bash Nice bit of English folk music, but it never explains what the album title means…

Pretty well was the same feeling I got from Leaf and Liege. Was fine, not getting the context that might change the importance.

Lush - Like if the Seekers were good, that guitar tone... wow! Autopsy made the playlist.

Nice folk

Trying to get into them. they come up on a lot of lists. So far just can't. 3*

I was thinking oh no, I'm a run of hippy shenanigans but this was different, good.

decent record, good sounding folk rock

Better than expected…

Not bad

Decent british folk.

Why is there an 11 minute song in the middle 😭. Good tho

A Sailor's Life was good and the rest was standard, middle of the road, late 60's folk music.

2 pripadam si jako na sjezdu mladych kducsl

I’m a huge Dylan fan so that helps. Not one I plan to revisit often.

I guess I'm an old now. (Like the folks on the cover). I like this. I liked the other Fairport Convention album that popped up for me on this list. I think it was my third or 4th total album. I'll say the same about this album as I did that one...These are songs I'd enjoy in an English pub with a slightly dusty smell and a tepid warm beer. 3 out of 5 stars for me, dog.

Not a fan of the style but understand why people would enjoy.

On par with Liege and Lief. Really enjoyed Autopsy. Who Knows Where the Time Goes was a little too sickly.

I do like that album cover, quintessentially British. Much like their last album we had, this grew on me as it went on and was quite enjoying it by the end. "Who knows where the time goes" is by far the best track and is pretty great. Unlikely I'll be back but glad I've heard it. Another solid 3.5

Album art:4

I did not have the right perception of this group from context, had never heard them but had seen the name. I liked a lot of the tracks, some of that weird dark British folk influence, some stuff that could be on Mac Demarco radio. The Bob Dylan songs are not his strongest. Highlights - Genesis Hall, Autopsy, Sailor's Life jam.

I found the vocals quite grating at first, but there was some undeniably great stuff on here.

Yeah was pretty boring for my liking

Bob Dylan goes to the Renaissance Fair with a lovely female lead vocalist.

I cannot believe they drowned the best character... Oh well... Nice, soothing 60s soft stuff. Nothing amazing but a nice listen while cleaning house.

There’s a delicate tug-of-war going on here, and nobody really loses. It sways between old-world folk ballads and breezy Dylan-soaked ramblings. The arrangements are sharp but never flashy. Feels like a love letter to a genre they were still inventing. I admired it more than I loved it. Solid record. Spins: 2 Playlist Additions: - Genesis Hall - Autopsy - Who Knows Where The Time Goes?

Never heard of this. It’s weird and vibes from the start. I don’t hate it. Not sure I would listen again though. The vocals get a little droning and repetitive for me. I really like “who knows where time goes?” This is a great tune. “Percy’s song is also really good. This was a good album.

Well, this is a little "twee" for me, but I guess it's the music that twee came from. A Sailor's Life is a decent jam, though, but I'm not sure they should have gone with Cajun Woman. That didn't really work for me.

I read reviews before listening. People exclaimed positively about this, so I was expecting something amazing. Maybe I set my expectations too high. It was fine. There’s definitely a reason I’ve never heard of it until now even though it’s older than me. The artwork and title don’t make want to listen either.

I have to admit, I was not looking forward to another folk album. This one was shockingly good and I intend to listen to more by this group.

British 70s folk. Some unreleased Dylan songs. Quite lovely in an understated way.

A few catchy songs and I've been into the 60s vibe lately but it didn't blow me away.

first few listens i enjoyed it.

Essentially a Dylan cover record. Give me the OG himself I say.

Dad- 7 Mom- 8 Mike- 6 Lori- 7 Michael- 7.5 Miles- 7 Cole- 6 Avg- 6,93

A good album, I liked Autopsy, Cajun Woman and Million Dollar Bash.

Не раздражало, а вообще такую музыку лучше слушать знающему английский. 5,5 из 10.

Unhalfbricking is a unique album. I've never heard folk music sung in French, and I surprised myself how much I liked that aspect. Speaking of, the female vocalist of Fairport Convention has the most delightful, soothing voice. I liked "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" most. This album could arguably be considered progressive. With its release in 1969 in the heyday of progressive music, Fairport created instrumental sections that were easy and elaborate. Lastly, I was incredibly reminded of the Canadian-American Joni Mitchell. She made similar powerful folk music, and her vocals have quite the impact, even today in 2025.

My interest was definitely piqued when this album popped up. During the last Fairport Convention album on this project, I found myself quite surprised by how much I liked it. Additionally, this album title and cover art intrigued me. This album was pretty good, but for me, not as good as "Liege & Lief". This album feels a bit more tame and "normal", and I guess that just didn't resonate with me quite as well when it comes to Fairport Convention. Still though, this group is like a proto-Fleetwood Mac, and as someone who adores Fleetwood Mac, I still found enjoyment in this! The Fleetwood Mac similarities were INCREDIBLY evident to me on "A Sailor's Life". Anyway, I'm pleased with another good album from Fairport Convention, a band I had never even heard of before this project.

Some mild and inoffensive folk adjacent music. I didn’t hate it, but would likely not revisit it. Musically competent. Likely a 2.5 in all honesty.

This was interesting but I'm not sure I enjoyed it.

Nice folk record. (32 known/65 new)

Rating: 6/10 Sounds like sailing the high seas.

J’ai vu ce disque comme un devoir de mémoire. Ce qui paraît oubliable demande à être entendu au moins une fois

# Album Name: Unhalfbricking # Artist: Fairport Convention # Rating: 3/5 # Comments: Not bad. Some nice vocals and melodies. No song really popped though. Few decent tracks. # Top Tunes: Where the time goes / Autopsy # Would I listen to it again? Only some of it

Havde aldrig hørt Fairport Convention før den her bog, synes det er fed men den anden plade vi havde var bedre. Hidtil mest britiske albumcover

I liked this album much more than their next album Liege & Thief. A Sailor's Life was the stand out track with its jammy ending. 3+

Not remarkable, and not terrible. I think I prefer my folk more folksy.

This is a cloudy day album if I’ve ever heard one

love the calming vibes of this album

This album was ok, not much to say about this and unfortunately leaving this review in a rush. 4.9/10

Enjoying so far, good lyrics and instrumentals. I really liked the bass line in Autopsy. A Sailor’s life had some great parts, thought it was a different song but realized it’s actually just a long track. Some parts of the songs are a little repetitive at times, I wasn’t a big fan of Percy’s song upon first listen. The band does kind of remind me of a Fleetwood Mac esque band that never quite had that hit to let them take off. Overall, I really enjoyed the album (at points) and would likely seek them out to listen to further. Nice discovery having apparently listened to them only four times in 2018 before this album.

A delightful surprise. Haven't heard of this band before but I had a good time.

me and who genesis hall- 5 si tu dois partir- 6 autopsy- 5 a sailors life- 5 cajun woman- 6 who knows where the time goes- 5 or 6 percys song- 5 million dollar bash- 5 or 6 dear landlord- 5 ballad of easy rider- 5 this was a lovely little album. ill return to at another day

Really not bad - a pleasant enough listen that took me several days to absorb. 3.2/5 -> 3/5

Much prefer Over the Rhine.....

Highs were really high, lows were quite forgettable. 3.5 if I could, just didn't grasp me enough to get to 4. A Sailor's Life & Who Know's Where the Time Goes both so so good

folkie

I was very surprised - no way this dos not sound as a contemporary album. First time ever hearing of them... turned out well. (Hope you had a successful career...}

Weird because it simultaneously sounds like so many records of the 60s and yet also sounds different. I can’t quite put my finger on why. Regardless I was glad to be introduced to it. 3.5/5

A Sailor's Life was really good, I enjoyed that song and Cajun Woman was alright. I just love her voice too, I had listened to another Fairport Convention album in this challenge a few weeks back and really liked that one. 3 stars overall

There's some fantastic music on this album, but there's also a good deal that doesn't do much for me. I do wish it leaned more heavily on British traditional folk music as its source. I don't like this album nearly as much as Liege and Lief. 3 stars.

Kind of liked this. Not a big fan of that british folkiness (being English), crop circles et al, but this maintains just enough of the 60s US folk rock influences to let me listen. And more importantly got to comment on that cover, it's so gloriously naff. 3 Star.

I didn’t enjoy the first Fairpoint Convention album I got but this one was much better. Good songs, good vibes. Never gonna be my favorite band or anything but it was a solid listen.

Yeah, sure, folk. It’s nice enough actually but I’m pretty sure the generator has already recommended I listen to a 1969 album by these folks…

Not bad at all. Just a regular good album from the end of the 60's. 3 stars.

This album is pleasant to listen to, but it's the older style of folk that I don't particularly care for. Her voice is nice, and I think they made some interesting decisions with their mix of older English folk songs and unreleased Bob Dylan songs. It's just ultimately not for me, and it was hard to get myself to listen to enough of it to rate it 3/5

This was alright but not a ton drawing me back

Folksy, monotone, ok.

I just can’t really get into A Sailor’s Life, which hangs over the whole album. Just don’t quite get this, although Percy's Song is compelling

Sailors life was kinda sick with it. Everything else alright Will I listen to again: 25%

Neat folky album, fits in with the time it was made

This is a folk rock album that reminds me of the music my granny used to play on her radio when I was a child. I put it on as I was writing and whilst I didn’t pay as total attention as I could have done, I was aware of the vibe and the sound, which I enjoyed. It’s very easy going, very smooth and the perfect album to switch off to. It would be in my category for Sunday morning music. I can hear the Bob Dylan inspiration in the music, that yearning guitar and soft vocals creating a demure, smooth sound that’s easily digestible. It’s an understated album that doesn’t try to do too much. It didn’t wow me and I think, if I was doing nothing else but listening, I would have gotten bored with some songs but I won’t hold that against it. Not all the songs are hits but the ones that are hold up. I just wish there was a bit less Dylan involved because the fucker seems to be everywhere at the moment (as of 2025, thanks Timothee Chalamet), he is inescapable. There are some jazzy moments in here that I enjoyed, some slow and thought-provoking melodies that created a good atmosphere for my writing. I would give it another listen, which warrants it a three stars.

Honestly, this is a really nice blend of folk and rock. The rock never feels too heavy, and the music clearly has very solid, deep roots in folk music. The more I listen to this, the more it grows on me. It never really ends up as a great album for me, but it is very good. It's weird to say about a folk album, but I think if it was recorded/mixed/produced a little more cleanly, I would probably like it more. The album on Spotify sounds like it's being played from an old record that hasn't been played in at least half a decade. Favorite Song(s): Who Knows Where the Time Goes?, Percy's Song

When i go back to albums I haven't had a chance to hear I pick two types. Albums that seems like a great music or something that I can write funny comment about. This was the second type and joke is on me. By seeing folk as a genre with this old couple on the cover I was already preparing commetns about beating myself with a brick instead of listening to this. But today I decided to see a brick half full.

Some great Dylan covers on here, among other songs. A beautiful voice, reminiscent of Joni Mitchell.

Gentle folk rock/pop

Melhor música: Who Knows Where the Time Goes

I think I finally figured out why I can't get into this band. Their music reminds me of my mother.

Bits were fun & catchy - but overall I felt this one was lacking something

This album started off a bit slow for me, but as I got into it, I really enjoyed it. Some fantastic guitar playing and catchy melodies as you get to some of the later tracks.

A few songs I enjoyed, and she has a great voice.

Not bad. Watched the sunset to this album from my front window on March 7, 2026

Some nice folk music.

This was surprisingly nice to listen to, despite never hearing of this band before. A 3.5+ from me.

Typisches Folk-Album. Tolle Lyrics. Nicht weiter verwunderlich, dass sie unveröffentlichtes Material von Bob Dylan sangen. Obwohl, "Si tu dois partir" isch nüd s beschte Lied uf de Platte.. A sailors life isch sehr athmosphärisch. Die Sängerin Sandy hat mit Robert Plant ein Duett für Led Zeppelin gesungen.

It’s a chill album and I’d never heard this before. Will I listen again? Not sure, probably not but I’m not regretting the time I spent with Fairport Convention

Solid folk album, but folk just isn’t normally my thing. “A Sailor’s Life” and “Million Dollar Bash” are the highlights for me. Overall, a respectable effort for fans of the genre.

Quite overly folksy but Sailor’s Life the pinnacle

Liked the vibe and sound, but the songs were to long

Blind album, know the artist from another album on the project. Unsure if i liked this album more because it was shorter...?

Never heard this album before. I guess the English version of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band with a rotating cast of musicians. The music sounds like it should have been released 5 years earlier. Good music. I would listen again if in the mood for bob Dylan with a better voice. I don’t think I’d put this on my 1001 list honestly.

Folky vibe, was unsure on the first couple but got pretty into it. “A Sailors life” slapped.

THEY MATCHED EACH OTHER'S FREAK 😭😭

Folk rock, overraskende godt, lidt fleetwood Mac stemning

Not really my thing, but sounded okay? The singer sounded a lot like someone else I heard not too long ago

On par with the Beatles

True folk, mellow but also hard going in places.

I read that this is a more Dylany record than the trad folk generally associated with Fairport. Very enjoy the first couple of tracks. I got gradually a little bit less interested as it went on, but I feel for sure these songs will reward repeat listening. The Richard Thompson album absolutely did. Percy's Song in particular just fills out near the end and really invades the ears. Whereas I drifted off a bit during Sailor's Song. Think I'm going down the middle. High 3. Enjoyed, but feel like I enjoyed the other record in the book more, and definitely the Richard+ Linda Thompson one more. I was about to adjust my rating because a song came on right at the end which I thought was fantastic. However I looked and the album had ended and it was Come All Ye off Liege and Leaf. So that seals it.

Honestly not bad a few really solid tracks. Some pretty bad stuff though too. Really a mixed series of tracks but some of the higher energy stuff sounds decent.

Nice folk music

Classic oldid

Pleasant enough.

I suppose I'll have to check out Liege and Lief again, as I remember really enjoying that album. This one was certainly solid, but I failed to connect on any deep level. It floated by and I was glad to have been there, but I've got little to show for the experience.

i've tried with this album before, and today's listen was certainly more enjoyable, but i've never warmed to this one the way I do with Lief & Liege. so good tunes, though, especially Who Knows Where the Time Goes?

Really good!

Nice? Nice and pleasant? It feels like an album to be very English to. When you put on a persona and this is the background material you use to get into the mood. It's definately of an era, and it's not bad, but as a choice to listen to? I'm unsure. I think I like it, but I'm not making an effort to like it. I think this is an album to enjoy with company. Come over, I'll make lunch, let's listen to this album together in the afternoon and decide together if it's nice, or not. White bread with cheese, radish and cucumber sandwiches. You bring the tea. 3 stars for the delightful scenario prospects.

Fairport convention is a hard one for me to listen to, meet on the ledge was my grandads funeral song, so it can be tough. Also they come off as a bit more dated than the other bands of their time, A sailors life being an exception, though that drags for way too long. That French song is especially abysmal. But nothing else is bad as such so I’ll give it a 3/5.

I admit it now. I like some folk. That Percy song also got me through some brutal traffic.

Nice to listen. Non-invasive kind of album. It passes a message and you move on. 3.5/5.

I think I've heard of Fairport Convention before, but I can't remember the context in which I've heard about them. Folk music can be a bit of a mixed bag for me, and I'm not entirely sure I know what characteristics differentiate British and American folk music, but I'm interested to see what this album has in store. Overall, this album was fine. There were a handful of songs that I enjoyed more than the others, but the ones that I didn't particularly enjoy were still fine. I don't think this album did anything particularly novel or noteworthy, but I thought that "A Sailor's Life" was the best song on the album. I really enjoyed the long format of the song, and the melancholy lyrics were great. The instrumental portion at the end of the song was really good too, and I think it was the band's best showcase of their talent. The lyrics to "Cajun Woman" were some of my favorite on the album as well. Given the results of the recent election here in the U.S., I thought the lyrics were incredibly relevant. "Percy's Song" was pretty good too, and I'm not sure where I land on its meaning, but I did like the vocals on it quite a bit. The other songs on the album were fine, but pretty forgettable on the whole. This album was interesting, but it's not the sort of thing I'd listen to again.

I was ready to hate on this album, but actually really enjoyed it.

I didn’t give it the proper listen

Pretty fun, and a little creepy at times. There's definitely a time and a place for it.

Calming folk tunes. Bit of French lyrics mixed in a song or two.

I enjoyed the album as background music - would be great for a coffee shop vibe. I didn't find it very memorable or interesting, though.

Twas alright

The magic of The Basement Tapes is that it’s just singers and players playing around. There’s no artifice and no attempt at commerciality. It’s the tradition of everyone who plays an instrument in any human settlement, whether they are any good or not, gathering together on a front porch or around a fire and playing - playing in every sense of the word. And that is why The Basement Tapes of one of the best albums of all time, because it captures that feeling. This album covers a song from The Basement Tapes, but doesn’t capture that feeling on that cover. But it does on “Si Tu Dois Patir”. That sounds like people just playing for the love of making music together and connecting amongst themselves and their audience. It’s goofy and silly and loose and fun and everything The Basement Tapes does right. ”Si Tu Dois Patir” is the clear stand out on this album. The rest is okay folky stuff, but nothing to write home about. Everything else on the album, Richard Thompson would go on to do better on his three albums as Richard and Linda Thompson. But “Si Tu Dois Patir” is worth the price of admission.

It was fine. Warbly hippy goodness. Felt like what my mom liked to listen to when I was growing up.

Hated the first track, almost put it off, then powered through and loved track 3. Stayed on board for the rest which was a wacky ride (no idea when Spotify radio kicked in). Will listen to Autopsy (typical) again for sure.

Quite good. Special, but not unique.

Quite dreamy and ethereal, but very 60s

Nice folky vibe. 3 stars

Singer reminds me of Joni Mitchell's Court and Spark that we got almost a year ago. Absolutely nothing wrong with this album.

Some nice folk with a little zesty guitar work thrown in at times. I remember their other album Liege and Lief being way better than this one.

3 stars

folk basicão nada demais nada de menos tbm

挺温暖的

Could have sworn I’ve had this before. Anyway, that’s neither here nor there. Sandy Dennis was an inspiration on Joni Mitchell, no?

pleasant. very much.

Who Knows Where the Time Goes is GOAT, but Liege and Lief is better overall. There's as many clunkers in the deep cuts as good songs. 3.5/5

Not my thing at all but I liked the album cover and a couple of songs

Boring I'm sorry

Just ok

started good but like also, its not that good

I thought that this was very good, but a bit boring 2.5-3/5

A few good songs, a few meh ones. Not as good as their other album on this list. Standout songs: A Sailors Life

Good album.

Sounds good, I just can't rock with folk. For me, British folk doesn't have the cultural baggage of the American folk movement of the 60s. So there's that. I can say on the merits of the sound and playing, it's good. But I can't go above three because that would mean I'd want to come back to it later. And I don't. But if you put it on in a restaurant or coffee house or just chilling somewhere it would be just fine.

This list is seriously making me dislike British anything. But this was a pleasant surprise. I think the singer is fantastic and the music is enjoyable.

La verdad, verdad, esto no esta nada de mal. me pregunto, eso si, si la reacción que tengo es la misma que un gringo promedio tiene con cualquier disco de country

A promise of what to come, Unhalfbricking still sees some thigh-smacking, jug-blowing tunes like 'Cajun Woman' and 'Million Dollar Bash' but luckily also the convention's trademark English folk songs like 'Percy's Song'

Pretty nice. Not the best.

Gonna be honest, I think I got this album on the wrong day. I enjoyed this one fine, but didn’t appreciate as much as I should have (or would have on a less hectic day). Added ‘Who knows where the time goes’ to my 1001 playlist. Will need to revisit Fairport Convention in the future

One great song, most of the rest is not for me.

Good, but nothing special.

They have a beautiful light folksy sound which makes the couple songs where they jam out more feel really out of place. 3.5 stars. Stand-out: Genesis Hall

Other than the great lyricism (that is in no small part thanks to many of the songs having been written by Bob Dylan) this album really doesn’t have much to it. It’s English folk. It’s plain, boring, and not for me most of the time.

Sort of a cool fun album, but didn't stand out to me as being particularly special.

This was a nice surprise.

Folksy. A few good songs. like Sandy Denny’s voice especially in Percy’s Song

I enjoyed it. I can see where these guys fit in music history.

Really good for 60s folk

It’s nice to hear Sandy Denny again. I preferred the folkier sound songs.

Enjoyable listen. 3.5/5

The start of this had me very worried. I wasn't grabbed at all. But as it went on I started to like it more and more, until the last few tracks which I really liked. In particular Who Knows Where the Time Goes? which was so fucken good. Fav songs: - Who Knows Where the Time Goes? - Autopsy - Percy's Song

Conflicting, some of this is hideous but some is aite

I like folk music but I don't love folk music. The song in French was a delightful little shake up.

Its ok my man

7.5/10 Mejores temas: 1 Genesis hall 2 A sailor's life

Este se ganó un 6,7, pero no llega a las 4 estrellas. Buen disco de Folk Rock. Parecido A Odessa de BeeGees Mejor tema: A Sailor's Life Otro tema: Percy's Song

May 29, 2024 HL: “Si Tu Dois Partir”, “Who Knows Where the Time Goes?”, “Percy’s Song” An album of ‘almosts’. The patient crescendo of “A Sailor’s Life” almost quickened my pulse. “Million Dollar Bash” almost made me want to dance. Maybe I just happened to be craving higher energy music today, which sometimes happens as a result of the randomness: mood & time of day are both vital factors in how I perceive new music. Still pleasant enough, accordion laced tunes, and a good first impression of Fairport Convention. 3.5

Not good, not bad.

Some nice calm songs that were easy to listen to but I don't think I'd return for another listen tbh

Melodious music with a voice to match. The typical sound of the fading 60s, the musical Hair sends its regards

Wasn't expecting much going into this, but enjoyable overall. Some songs felt like old Jethro Tull or Steely Dan, while others dragged on too long and just felt pretentious.

I am on the fence here. I was not personally a big fan of the main singer but found, especially at certain moments, the instrumentals to be really good. Maybe in a way I felt like I didn't have the interest to put a lot of attention into it overall, but at the same time couldn't say it was particularly bad or of any sort of poor quality. Whether it ought be on a list of must hear albums is questionable. This, of course, is always qualfied by the idea that it stands alone and has no special historical value attached. In those cases the essential listenng idea changes. In this case I was not really interested enough to see if Fairpoint Convention has any historical significance. A couple of songs I felt were rather strong. Otherwise...

-1000000000 for french 3/5 -1 for french

I love Johnny Flynn a lot, but I’ve never really given any other northern folk a chance. Turns out it’s unsurprisingly good stuff

3.5 I think. On the one hand, some of the musicianship here is great and impressive, but then it succumb to some of the 60s hippy music stereotypes and wonders top far into the garden for me.

Not bad! Pleasant driving music on this warm, sunny May morning. More a 3.5.

Some bops drag it out if 2 territory into 3. Pleasant listening but not totes for me

This was pretty good but one step below great. I enjoyed it for the most part. 3.5

It started out kind of hippy dippy but got progressively more bluesy. It was enjoyable

British Folk Rock was very convincing and enjoyable

Let’s go back to The Shire!

Buen folk-rock .

I liked this album. Songs were good

Fairly whimsical for its time, I think. Nice to listen to in the background.

A jolly good listen.

2.5/5 Easy going album. Nothing special but also can’t say anything bad about it.

# Playlist Track - Who Knows Where The Time Goes? # Notes - Perfectly enjoyable folk music, with some boring passages and a few inspired segments. Won't blow your mind, won't bore you too much. - The cover really says it all.

The album opened quite strong with 'Autopsy' and 'A Sailor's Life', and I thought it would be one of those rare gems that I hadn't heard before and took me completely be surprise and just nailed it. Unfortunately, this streak become fairly short lived when we started to get more cheerful folk-like music and the violin came in on 'Cajun Woman', which wasn't to my liking at all. 'Percy's song' suffers from the same. When listening to it again the day after, I realize I completely missed 'Who Knows Where The Time Goes' which has that same feeling like the start of the album. So it definitely has a few strong points, but also some fairly bad ones. I was initially hoping for it to be a sleeper 5 or at least a 4, but it will have to settle with a strong 3 since it's very uneven, and the good songs don't manage to carry it enough.

Really enjoyed the vocals on this one. The opening song "Genesis Home" was a really nice tune and immediately peaked my interest. The french Dylan cover not so much. I had never heard of this band before but there are some real gems here in "Autopsy" and all in all I enjoyed it. Quite a few songs (3 dylan covers?!) were not as interesting which cements it as a strong 3 star.

Nice relaxing quick listen. It probably deserves a few more listens, I certainly feel that I could grow to like this band but for now it's a 3. Faves: A Sailor's Life, Si tu dois partir, Cajun Woman

It’s OK but I don’t really like this type of folk music. It’s a bit mellow (I can’t count the amount of times I’ve said this in a review at this point.) I can understand why it’s on the list. It’s sort of in the middle in terms of the 1960s standard folk albums that I’ve heard from the list so far.

56/100

“Autopsy” is a cool song. I like the swagger and the swing in the beat. And “A Sailor’s Life” starts as a traditional British folk song with some psychedelic style and builds into a nice, extended rock jam. I like the mix of folk and rock on this album. “Who Knows Where the Times Goes?” is beautiful too.

Nice pretty and beautiful folk sometimes rock album. It went by kind of fast for me without too many moments that were memorable but at the same time I would go back and listen to this and enjoy it. I liked "A Sailor's Life" and "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?". Can hear a little Janis Joplin in those ones.

Enjoyable. Very chill.

Not bad but not my favorite

3/5 it was okay. Nothing really stood out.

Has its moments.

Boring folk music, but better than most boring folk music. I wouldn't listen again, but I'd recommend it to anyone who likes this kind of thing.

Great voice although listen needed

I came to this album expecting it to be full of fingers in ears, folderol-diddle-aye-day and songs about hobbits. To be fair, there is a line about “Oh My true love” in one of the songs, but this album has a nice mix of folk and some bluesy riffs on (gasp!) electric guitars. There are also a surprising number of Bob Dylan songs, an entertaining French song with what sounds like a hurdy gurdy and the classic Who Knows Where the Time Goes. Good stuff.

I was not familiar with Fairport Convention before. "Unhalfbricking" is an unobtrusive folk rock album. Sandy Denny is a great singer. Like with many other albums from the 1960s and early 1970s I am struggling with the stereo mix. Unfortunately, I had to listen with headphones …

I liked this much more than I thought I would.

Eh not really feeling this

This was a good album, never heard of this group before.

I enjoyed the mandolin on “Percy’s song”, I find her voice a little off putting. I do like “Million Dollar Bash”

I think I expected more from this It’s good folky stuff but doesn’t half meander about the place

Very enjoyable seems to bridge between folk rock and prog.

Decent. Some I really liked and other tracks I could not get into. Overall, ok.

This was mellow and not unpleasant. But definitely not a go-to album in the future. "A Sailor's Life" is definitely the best track on this record.

Was chill enough, just couldnt get into it. Album was only half an hour and halfway in I was looking at the time.

J'ai trouvé des pièces vraiment très captivantes, et d'autres dont j'aurais pu me passer. Généralement je suis resté très surpris de comment cet album sonne très en avance sur ton temps selon moi. Définitivement à réécouter. 7/10

I don't know. Folk!

mediocre folk with some EXTREMELY long songs, way too long. cool that this is the girl that sung on the battle of evermore (+1)

this is a hard album to rate because some songs were really cool. some songs had some cool parts and some bad parts. and some songs were bad. low 3 i guess

Enjoyable but unmemorable, always interesting to listen to these bands from the ‘60’s that didn’t write the majority of their own songs. 3/5

Their sound and style are quite reflective of folk-rock which was popular at the time, yet they also manage to make their songs sound a little distinct from most of their peers. Sandy Denny is so good. I also love that she's the answer to the Led Zeppelin trivia question, who besides Robert Plant performed vocals on any Led Zeppelin albums? She's the only one: she sang with him on 'The Battle Of Evermore'.

Not my favorite Fairport album, but they were moving in the right direction.

I liked the more upbeat rock songs like Cajun Woman and Million Dollar Bash over the more Joan Baez-like stuff. A mixed bag here.

They say this is a transitional album for the band, and I can definitely hear it. You’ve got these brighter and rockier songs, like “Million Dollar Bash” (which isn’t really that good), mitigating against the more powerful tracks like “A Sailor’s Life” (Child Ballad?). For me, this is the centerpiece of the album. It’s a sprawling psychedelic track that starts off quite minimally, building its evocations as it swells in its progression, detailing the dangerous realities of a sailor’s life. Melodramatic songs like this don’t seem to sit well with modern sensibilities, however. Having said that, dying for love and all that is a trope as old as the hills. This album is more than just a soothing female voice over mellow tunes—there’s some meat here.

It was alright Probably not something I would go back to but the singing and lyrics were good. Favorite song was Cajun Woman.

Inte hooked. Spännande dock med lite folkmusik

war ok, sehr whiny irwie

Never heard of them before but pleasantly surprised. Another easy listening album.

Just heard a song by these guys that was amazing, literally, I dunno, two weeks ago? Not off this album though. Excited this might be a hidden gem. Let’s find out! Genesis Hall - Hmm. Celtic folk. Ok. Not my jam but pleasant. Solid 3/5 Si Tu Doris Partir - go French! This is fine. I’m not particularly enamored. I bet this a traditional folk song. How would I know, I obviously don’t speak French! 2/5 Autopsy - please be a death metal song. Please be a death metal song. Ok, not a death metal song. Got a bit of rock in its folk though. Weird time changes. Seems like they are going somewhere with this interesting. 2/5 A Sailor’s Life - holy smokes this song is 11 minutes. Psychedelic intro that lasts over 2 minutes. Ok, rolling drum build up. I’m in. I’m all in on this one. This one is giving me goosebumps now. It just keeps building and building. This jam is my jam. It’s in the groove we’re full psych rock territory, everyone is in the pocket here, guitar drums everyone is bringing it. What a stellar find. Absolutely love this. Effortless lands it. 4/5 Cajun Woman - straight forward rocker. Solid 3/5. Who Knows Where The Time Goes? - another pleasant folk song. Great singer. I do really enjoy the mood this brings. Probably my favorite flavor of folk. See Nick Drake in this. 3/5 Percy’s Song - Hmm. S’ok. I enjoy the build up they give each song. 2/5 Million Dollar Bash - I can definitely see the hippies dancing to this one. 2/5 Dear Landlord - The only misstep of this whole album. Not awful though. Just meh. 1/5 The Ballad of Easy Rider - I was sure this was going to be a traditional folk song. Nope. The singer really elevates this one though. 2/5 This is a solid album. I don’t know if it’s because of the rock elements, the truly great understated singing or the song craft, but it’s definitely a vibe, and definitely one of the more enjoyable folk albums I’ve heard. Definitely worth a repeat listen, and some songs will go into my heavy rotation. This is 3/5, which, coming from non-folk guy is high praise.

album was ok. wont go looking for it again but I did not hate it

I like the folk/traditional thing they do. An interesting british counterpart to US folk at the time. Didn't realize Richard Thompson was in FC. Love Nina Simone's version of "Who Knows Where the Time Goes". Not something I'd put on often, but enjoyable. 3.7

Such a well crafted folk-rock album. Singer has a beautiful voice, some buesy folk-rock jams are really like candy to my ears and overall, the songs are really nice. Nice little discovery! 7.5/10

Sounded pretty modern at times despite a few bad songs. Not what I expected out of a 1969 folk album in a good way.

Decent album. I liked a couple of the tracks: Autopsy and Percy's Song. Altogether there still wasn't enough to bump it to a 4 for me.

Band name = could be mistaken for life insurance company Album cover = looks like a slide from your grandparents' vacation Music = surprisingly good, and way more timeless than I expected

Pleasant - if not really my thing

Another decent entry by Sandy and the team

Album 278 of 1001 Fairport Convention - Unhalfbricking Rating : 3 / 5 British Folk Rock. Not something I run across every day. An enjoyable, mellow album.

Not an album I'd go out my way to listen to again, but not particularly an album I'd avoid either.

I wouldn't put it on myself but I wouldnt turn it off if it was

It was alright

Some interesting stuff goin on here, considered me halfbricked

Super folksy which isn’t really my thing but interesting to check out

Better then I thought it would be. Slow and folk-sy, but not terrible. Lots of Dylan covers....

Coming in very strong with the album cover. And also pretty strong with the music. Friday was a shit day so I can't say I paid a lot of attention to this, but I'll give this another spin sometime.

Folky and fun and good tunes waiting at the car dealership for your tire to be changed

I see how this album is a great representation of the British folk style, but I find the genre soporific. Nice guitar and a talented singer.

Ci sta, sonorità direi morte oggi ma piacevoli da ascoltare. A sailor's life molto bella

Nice music. Not my thing really. But this is good. Lovely music

hmmmmm might have to give this two listens. strong start, had some nice instrumental moments. I like the soft female vocalist - they should've played more into that, songs like cajun woman aren't my cup of tea. 1:20 in Autopsy kinda make the album for me

Hmm, I kind of liked how this album went back and forth from folk-heavy to rock-heavy, and there was even some psychedelic jam band stuff in the middle. But overall, it was just ok. Not the worst of the folk-rock groups by any stretch, but nothing wowing either.
