Reviews (page 6 of 7)
I liked this. Didn't love it, but it was good for sure. 3.49/5
Feel like I'm at a weird hippie fair.. Not bad though
Surprisingly good. The bluegrass styled stuff I liked a lot.
beautiful classic folk music. What a crystal voice!
Throwback to a simpler mixing of lyrics and melody. Clear vocals and for the timeframe appropriate
Massive fan of Sandy Dennys voice. Some lovely moments.
Almost like a folksy Jefferson Airplane, the song in French "Si tu dois partir" is particularly good and stands apart from the rest of the album, I was a little let down from what followed
The song in French is great! The rest is just cookie cutter 60s singer songwriter stuff
1969???? 1. Genesis Hall - oh dear god, what is this country? folk?, this reminds me of wolfblood icl, i don’t even hate it 😭😭😭😭 2. Si tu dois partir - i’m so confused, where is the french coming from????, good thing these songs are only like 2 minutes long istg, omg this is so obviously an old song 3. Autopsy - what a weird flipping name, okay more folk?, really reminds me of irish folk songs like the voice not the instruments, this one is 4 minutes oh no, okay wait get it electric guitar solo, not sure how i feel about this one don’t think i like it that much 4. A Sailor’s Life - hmmm, STOP 11 MINUTES???!?!?!?!, bro do i listen to the whole thing??????, is this like a story in song form or something,
A really solid folk album. Not boring at all, and barely repetitive. The musicianship was top-notch for the genre. Just a few mediocre tracks toward the end, and not my favorite style. Fav tracks: A Sailor's Life, Autopsy, Genesis Hall
Pretty good folk rock, loved percy's song though i doubt I'll listen to this album again
First off I knew of one song from Fairport Convention, which I really liked. "Who knows...". 'Genesis' sets out the tone of this band are about. But, 'Si tu...' doesn't merit being on the album. Also the two shanty songs were a little annoying. Didn't enjoy the album as much as I thought I would, but still worth 3 out of 5
OK
I really don't love the vocals. This quavery 60s female folk style is not my favorite. But it's not the worst of that style (ahem.. Joan Baez...) and the rest of the band backing her up are tight. Pretty good stuff for a 60s folk band. And maybe the reason I like them is that they're not straight folk - they've got some tracks with soul or just good rock. Million Dollar Bash is a great track.
Folk rock feel with a clear Celtic imprint. Si Tu Dos Partir and Who Knows Where the Time Goes stand out, and Cajun Woman has a Creedence Clearwater Revival feel to it. Million Dollar Bash seemed most generically radio friendly, but Percy's Song was my favorite.
Odd English folk, but closer in spirit and sound to Bob Dylan compared to their later work. Not my thing, but interesting as a marker of what was going on at the time
A good, inoffensive album. Most notable is the unreleased Bob Dylan music that's been transformed into their own style. I like the English Folk influence on this, though it vaguely sounds a bit like Fox Robinhood's soundtrack.
Discount Jefferson Airplane
The sounds of a Renaissance Festival. 3/5
ok i guess. kinda wish there was more of the traditional stuff. their album Liege and Lief is better for that.
full of life, not too bad
Solid 60s folk. Easy listen and "Who Knows Where the Time Goes" is a standout
Gind
Beautiful vocal harmonies were the highlight of this album for me!
Better than their other one I listened to
Never judge a book by its cover, well I challenge anyone to try with this album. I was completely at a loss predicting what would happen when I hit play. Turns out it is a bit folky and not too much of anything in particular. Press play if you have some time to pass thoughtlessly.
Interesting mix of traditional folk and rock folk bordering on Dylan and Janis Joplin rock.
some songs really slap. its just filled with a lot of stuff i wouldnt listen to as well. 2 or 3 stars.
Ok album. Nothing really stood out beyond the story of the band and the name.
Often very pretty and relaxing, and was a fine bit of background score to my walk through the city this morning. While ultimately a bit unmemorable, I’d be glad to have it on again sometime.
A particularly 'jaunty' record! I liked it!
Not their best but good to revisit
Had to admit I was jamming a little but not my thing really
Not really a huge folk fan and this didn't really sway me, but I will not deny that there absolutely were a couple of great songs on here Stand out songs: - Si Tu Dois Partir: Absolute banger of a cover - Percy's Song
‘Who knows where the time goes’ vind ik een werkelijk prachtig nummer.
I'm a big Richard Thompson fan and haven't really listened to much of this early material, at least, not intentionally and not an entire album. Some of these tunes are often covered by him solo, or were in the rotation for a while at some point, and I'm familiar with those. It's interesting to hear him in an ensemble presentation, particularly one as "folky" as this group is. (Harpsichord, fiddle, etc.)
Liked it more than I thought I would. Good musicians. Still a bit uneven and too many Dylan covers. Overall it's fine but it didn't blow me away.
I like their stuff. It’s chill and they do it well but I am not convinced they deserve multiple slots on this list
Well it's not Liege & Lief. Which is not a perfect album. Which makes 3 stars make sense. I like the sound more than the songs, outside of Autopsy which is awesome.
Was expecting fey folk, but got some beautifully sung songs, pop, blues, rock and roll. Autopsy and Sailor are my standouts. Really surprised I like this! High three.
I liked it
60's British folk rock that has a bunch of covers of unreleased Bob Dylan music. Not bad, not amazing. Didn't have strong feelings about it one way or another.
It's a solid folk album. It's nowhere near as good as the other fairport convention album we had though, doesn't have as many nice riffs and good stories
Sandy Denny carries this album. Most songs did not struck with me but a few of the rockier folk are pretty nice. Highlights: Autopsy, A Sailor's Life, Who Knows Where The Time Goes?
Not a bad album, just kind of boring
Better than most of the folk garbage recommended on here. Some solid grooves.
Enjoyable but I don’t need to listen to it again.
This had some interesting songs, but overall a bit too folky for me
Really good British folk album, worth its place on the list.
Unhalfbricking is the third album - second of 1969 - by the British folk rock band Fairport Convention. This folk album is seen as a transitional piece, in which the band moved away from American folk influences toward a more traditional British folk sound. It was their first album to achieve chart success by reaching number 12 on the UK album chart. The track "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" is now regarded as a classic and is considered Sandy Denny's (lead singer & songwriter) best written song. This was a fun, folksy album that I enjoyed listening to. It reminded me of my late great-grandma because she would have loved an album like this since she is a fan of folk rock and anything British. It's cute, traditional songs that probably everyone would like.
I really liked some of the harmonies and the guitar work. But I have to be honest, I got a little bored with it at times. It's not bad, not at all. But there's other folk I would put on before this one.
interesting
Not sure if the people in the album cover are the singers or if they are the ones in the background. Either way, here we have ANOTHER British folk rock band that the singer sounds just like many other singers in the folk rock genre. Especially Jefferson Airplane. I did enjoy this for what it was, I like those psychedelic folk rock type albums.
This feels like the result of a time when artists were creating the rules of different genres going forward. I think Unhalfbricking kind of encapsulates that idea, where it doesn't quite know what it wants to be, but you know what, I’m here for it. This album is folksy, charming, and just grounded enough to keep me invested. I have to admit listening to Who Knows Where the Time Goes while watching my toddler walk backwards across the living room waving “bye” to me got me choked up a bit.
An at times transcendent time capsule of late 60s baroque folk that could still place on Pitchfork’s Best New Music today.
This sounded very similar to Joni Mitchell in my opinion. It was calm and relaxing but after a bit it got a little boring. It was a pretty album, but nothing I’d consider to be incredibly influential.
Second Fairport Convention album in 2 weeks and I like it. Especially after noise rock the last few days... It doesn't hit me the same way that "Liege & Lief" did/does; weirdly I think I liked the more fantastical types of songs on that one, but this is still a great listen. Not a big fan when Sandy Denny isn't singing and I prefer the originals here (i.e. the Dylan songs are meh). The middle of this album is where the meat is, from "Autopsy" through "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?" Not my fave of theirs but I'd still listen tip to tail and not be put out :) 6/10 3 stars.
60s folk and jam band.
Another mystery just not present on YT Music, yet a search on the video side is happy to turn it up, clearly labeled and arranged in a playlist. Not sure about the source, but what I got was fairly muddy sound quality. I wasn't that wowed by this anyway. I didn't dislike it but felt like it failed to quite negotiate a line between traditional music and neo-folk.
In the right situation, I could listen to this one again.
Really enjoyed this. Prob won’t ever listen to it again!
It was ok. Really good in parts, ok in others. I really liked "A sailors life"
Not great, not terrible
Interesting, but forgettable.
Super chill music.
Enjoyed
Man who cares.
I used to think I liked folk music, but I'm increasingly discovering that I didn't know much about folk music and just like some specific artists. Well, this is not a bad album, but it does not understandable why it deserves a spot on the 1001 list. 2.5 stars
Its pretty good but not really my thing, thats not an issue with the record tho, thats on me
3/5. A very interesting and engaging folk album. Hard to break away from for several songs but others can definitely be skipped.
Better than I expected…
Kaks vikaa biisiä nousi yli muiden, mutta muuten vähän tylsänpuoleinen. Menköön nyt kolmosella.
Gezellige folk. Niet meer, niet minder
Surprisingly not shit
Ok
Actually didn't find this to be that bad. Easy thing to listen to
It was fine I guess. A soft 3 for me.
Angenehmer Country Sound. Geht gut rein.
I love british folk-rock. It's my autumn genre for sure. Sad vidim, Bob Dylan je napisao pola albuma? Ne znam, on je jebeno blago i tu nema tko šta reći. A Sailor's Life is my shit. Lijep album, ali samo to.
Pop intimista con cierto toque setentero. Voz calmada y fácil de escuchar.
Bit too folky for me on first listen but I quite enjoyed it second time around. 3*
Quite liked this one.
Interesting folk album, calming but not my thing
Decent tunes
Never thought I would actually like this.
Was not expecting to like this at all, but it was decent. Favorite track: Percy's Song
A bit dry at times, and very upbeat and fun at times as well. The vocals are actually really beautiful throughout and carry a few of the binder songs. 5/10
cajun woman is probably my favorite on this album. folky. folksy.
This was ok, but I won’t be searching it out again in a hurry.
Ok.
Never heard of this one. Good background music
Occasional jams make for a nice listen.
Boh non è malvagio
I’m going to abandon my song-by-song evaluation here because it doesn’t feel appropriate. This album, compact as it is, deserves to be experienced in its totality. Beautiful vocals with catchy folk-rock tunes.
ok folksy type of thing. Pleasant
This was alright; some good stuff, but also some long, meandering, less interesting stuff.
Not bad, rural and psychedelic at times. Well executed but a little bland for me.
Fairly good but unremarkable. 3.5
Was a really enjoyable album, but some songs just ran a lil long
Decent
3.5/5
Chill 60s music. Not my cup of tea but not bad
Love the accents
Really an impressive and interesting album that is hauntingly familiar. Someone must have played it at a party or it was in a movie or something when I was a child. In particular, there are a few notes in Autopsy that come sweeping in as near perfect. The fact that Richard Thompson was involved comes as no surprise, because it reverberates with the Richard and Linda Thompson album Bright Lights (I like Linda's voice better)! Quite pleasant overall with a few jangly tracks and an album I would not mind revisiting once in a while.
Huh. Never heard of these guys but from the opening note it was like 10,000 Maniacs but well before that group ever existed. Cool sound, really dig Sandy Denny's vocals. Definitely a 3.5. Tough call whether to bump it to a 4 given the albums I recently gave that rating to. I quite enjoyed Genesis Hall, A Sailor's Life, Who Knows Where the Time Goes, and Percy's Song but I was a bit indifferent to the other 4 songs.
-"Genesis Hall" and "Autopsy" had a bit of a spooky vibe, but maybe that's just what folk and/or this band sounds like and I'm stupid -"Si tu dois partir" has the horrible flaw of being in French (🤮) -"A Sailor's Life" was kind of slow/standard for the album for like 5 minutes, but the drums and bass have been picking up into a solid jam...I wish it didn't start so late in, or the song had been a little more interesting in the beginning -"Cajun Woman" is an awesome, upbeat, fast paced track! Rhythm section is shredding, I believe I heard an accordion going, and some very slidey guitar is ripping away as well. By far the best song on the album -"Percy's Song" kind of builds up but it mostly just is the same thing but louder -If there were more track like the jam in "A Sailor's Life" and "Cajun Woman," this could definitely be a 4 or maybe a 5 star album, but there's too much in it that is meh
I got through it
3.5
I've listened to this twice through and both times I enjoyed it but I still can't remember a single tune.
25th May 2022 Listened on the way in to the office. Was supposed to go up to Leeds to see Nathaniel with Sav but they cancelled so we got the train half way there and came back. Liked this a lot, folky blues with great story telling.
I had it in my head that I didn’t like this album ages ago when I first listened. And said “Liege and Lief” was better when we later listened to that. But my recollection was not supported by this re-listen. I enjoyed “Unhalfbricking.” I read as I began that they were known as the “British Jefferson Airplane,” and I definitely hear a folkier version of JA’s psychedelic rock. And heard similarities between the voices of Sandy Denny and Grace Slick. I had actually compared the two singers on that “Liege and Lief” review, maybe without knowing about the common comparison? Somewhat amusingly, there are 3 Bob Dylan covers on the album, and though there’s already too much Dylan on the list, it turns out it’s nice to hear his songs sung by a different voice.
This starts out a little rough. I know they were bored, but Si Tu Dois Partir would have been more enjoyable if they hadn’t translated the lyrics to French. Highlights for me are Who Knows Where The Time Goes? and the last two Dylan covers, Percy’s Song and Million Dollar Bash. I like Sandy Denny’s voice. I’m not really keen on giving credit for an album full of covers, and the tracks are uneven. It’s on the low end of the rating, but in the end, I could have this on in the background and be content. What this album reinforces more than anything is what a prolific song writer Dylan is. A well deserving Nobel Laureate.
Bob Dylan and Joan Baez, with fiddle trying to sound like English folk music, but comes across pretty American. Not altogether unpleasant though.
Average...
Pretty good guitar work at points but on the whole didn’t speak to me too much
heard a lot about them being influential, and i think i can hear it. album was middle of the road for me though.
Decent Folk-Rock that is easy listening, without any real high- nor lowlights.
Meh
Was OK, Who knows? is a banger but there's a bit too much folky stuff for me. Like the track that sounds like Pink Floyd.
An average album not much that stands out just ok
A solid album with a lot of good songs and some weaker ones.
6/10
Folky traag,
Não se sustenta comparado ao escutado primeiro.
6/10
This was a good relaxing time.
Well that was delightful
Nice enjoyable listen. Will listen again.
Really picked up steam from Cajun Woman on to the end.
Mmm no...
like the wiki says, it feels a bit like jefferson airplane if they played folk instead of rock. Voice is great and songs are diverse but nothing too special
Decent Folk music. Was fun I think is the way to put it. I'd listen to it while being outside and grilling. Not bad yo.
Doesn't really hold up to its excellent album cover. Singer has some great Joni Mitchell vibes. A sailors life developed into something really nice.
Nice renaissance music.
A bit Rod Jane and Freddie
7/10
I like the album cover and name, very architectural. I enjoyed the album. A bit hippie-ish for my taste, but certainly palettable.
Liked this one a bit more than the last Fairport Convention album I've heard, a bit more chill.
I enjoyed it more than I did the previous recommendation ("Liege and Lief"), a lot less straight up folk. It's not bad, just not anything impressive to me. Favorite tracks: "A Sailor's Life", "Million Dollar Bash"
Ok.
Country folk. Interesante
Decent
While I don't love this, Genesis Hall would be an incredible horror movie track. 3 stars just for that.
I wasn’t expecting that!
Folksy. I’m not a fan of higher register female folk vocals. I skipped most of this album.
Much more dynamic and inspired than 'Liege and Lief' - the songs here are varied and draw from a wide range of influences that surprise and entertain at each turn. Track length is still an issue, though, with several pieces beating one verse and chorus within an inch of their lives.
'Autopsy' was a song I had added to the 'Best of Discover Weekly' playlist I keep on Spotify. Never went on to listen to the album.
Female vocalist has a great voice, and the instrumentals are well done. Didn’t really spark my interest, but it’s high quality stuff.
Busy and ambitious.
Folky vibes
bretty cool
Enjoyable folk rock.
Solid album. Tracks flow together nicely. Flower power.
Solid album overall. Not my favorite era of music but I enjoyed it. Who Knows Where The Time Goes is lovely.
Better than Tim Buckley, but only barely. I could see myself smoking a bunch of joints and listening to this on a rainy fall Saturday, but there are also other records of this ilk that I'd reach for first.
pretty interesting, the sailor song or whatever is pretty cool, kinda like... idk hypnotising a bit, idk if I'M OK WITH THIS NONCONSENSUAL HYPNOTISING pretty cool tho ngl
Ok
It was nice enough but not really the kind of folk I'm into
I liked Sailors life, but all the other songs were forgettable. Can't say it is my favorite, but its the kind of thing you might fall in love with if it was the only cassette you had on a long road trip. 5 stars out of 10.
gut
One or two tracks I really enjoyed, not really listened to much UK folk before.
A very decent listen. Nice guitar on this and enjoyed the vocals.
Another group I had never heard of before. good folk tunes with a celtic sound every now a then.
Interesting and well-done, but not my favorite
Pretty tradish folk music. Quite nice overall. Relaxing if not exciting. A couple of more interesting tracks ('Cajun Woman' & 'Si tu dois partir') and a nicely done traditional track ('A Sailors Life') just about elevate this to a generous 3.
3.3 - Pretty and pleasant with a couple standout tracks. In particular, "A Sailor's Life" is a meandering story with some nice extended jams at 11:16. "Who Knows Where the Time Goes?" is a Jefferson Airplane-esque folk tune for the ages. Still, this band is just a smidge deeper into the rabbit hole of 60s psychedelic-folk than I care to venture.
I was excited to see this, since I recognized a couple of the songs from a Sandy Denny collection I have. I prefer the traditional English songs over the American folk songs – though I liked “Percy’s Song” & felt “The Sailor’s Song” was about six minutes too long. I would give it a higher mark but the clash between the two styles was jarring. It sounded like two bands on two different albums. IMO Sandy Denny has possibly the best voice I’ve heard so far on 1001.
Sandy Denny truly has a transcendental voice and the band wisely lets her take centre stage with most of the instruments playing lo-key in the background. The only song I didn't like was Cajun woman. In case you're interested, my rating criteria is: 1 Star - I hated it, 2 Stars - it has good qualities, but overall I'm indifferent, 3 Stars - its a very good album, respect, but I probably wouldn't play it again; 4 Stars - Love it, definitely on my repeat list; 5 Stars - An iconic album, every song is perfect, without any weak songs.
Lepsze niż się zapowiadało
Pretty cool folk music, I like the semi-sad feel
Again, listened to on the drive. Was a little unsure of some of the more twee folk songs, but then there were a couple that were a bit different and really enjoyed them. A mixed bag!
Pretty cool folk music. 7/10
Tracks: Percy's song, Autopsy, Million dollar bash
My ears are not bleeding so that’s good. It wasn’t terrible. I don’t know if I would choose to listen to it again however it would make some good movie music. Some of the songs were a little lengthy but overall not mad that I listened to this.
A good folk-rock album. I had never listened to this band before and was pleasantly surprised. They have a couple of good tracks("Si tu does partir", "Sailors life" and "who knows where the time goes") adding more to the folk side (which is a lot lighter than I usually like to listen to) but really telling a story with each song.
This was an odd mix of psychedelia and British folk. I liked it.
I liked it! Folk/country vibes.
Maybe a bit too country, but it is all right
Some nice tracks in there that I added to playlists. Not a great album overall and not super cohesive, but I'm glad to have heard it.
Easy listening. Groovy ballads. Shorter bangers.
Very nice and relaxing overall. The first half of the album, like Genesis Hall, Si tu dois partir, and A Sailor's Life, were my favorite bits.
Generally nice, but a bit boring.
All over the place. Not in a good way.
Drivel
The Bob Dylan covers were pretty good but that was about it.
p182. 1969. 2 stars. Can't deny that Sandy Denny has a gorgeous voice, and can't fault the musicianship. It's all a bit samey though - the highlight is a Dylan song - and falls victim to late 60s wankage with an 11+ minute monstrosity. Bonus point for Richard Thompson on guitar, but point deducted for Ashley Hutchins because he's a twat.

Listened Before? N Yawwwwwwwwwnnnn. This is what happens when you take all the soul out of folk music and give the vocals to a singer with no range and no emotion. I'll pass. Added to Library? N Songs added to playlist: Genesis Hall
The heck does that mean?
Las canciones eran interminables…
Maso
I liked their other one a decent bit but found this one tough to get through. Maybe another day I’ll be in a better mood for it. I enjoy the cover art at least. Rating: 1.7
Kind of a hard listen at times, but "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?" alone holds it up to a 2 on my personal scale
Pretty forgettable and I wonder whether this was actually unique at the time.
Try as I might, I never could enjoy this.
Just very non offensive- would not return to this album out of choice.
Perfectly pleasant, if bland, until Sailor’s Life, which took an unexpected left turn. I don’t see myself coming back to this, and won’t remember a song besides Sailors Life, so I am going to be a bit critical with my rating.
I learned something today. English folk music is not my thing. 2⭐️
Another English folk album. Has a few moments, but ultimately bores me...
Ooft, way too twee for my liking
It's beautiful to the right audience, but I am not that audience. Folk has never been my forte, and it steps into mediocrity to my ears.
I'm decidedly unimpressed.
Lame hippy cult vibes
- I'm not that into this. It's okayish, but I don't love the singer's vibrato. I like it better when the guy starts singing at the end of the album, and that song was the most interesting one for me. - Unfortunately, other than that song, none of the songs really caught my attention except the french song -- for the wrong reasons... the accent was way too anglo to pull it off. And the majority of the songs felt waaaaay too long. - The instrumentation isn't bad, but it doesn't really give anything room to breathe and isn't interesting enough to be that unrelenting. - The other thing I strongly dislike is that a lot of the songs are Dylan's work, and I'm boycotting that misogynist Zionist domestic abuser. - I do like the album cover, though the story is very sad how it reminds them of the very fatal car crash the same day.
70’s folk rock vibe
Some nice folk songs (liked the french one) but mostly a bit same same.
Mellow and chill but unremarkable
Music was as strange as the name
Standouts Autopsy
i expected worse when I saw the album cover
the vocals were nice but overall it was pretty boring
Absolutely not my taste in music.
Numbing.
Fine
As beige as the album cover depicts it to be.
98. ok
Bon album.
Boring music, grating vocals. My mother describes singers like this as “squawking women”. She’s right. It’s hard to listen to, let alone enjoy. I won’t be revisiting this.
Even though I thoroughly hated this, I have to concede that English folk is not anywhere on any list of music I enjoy. So, I'll just say it's a me problem and move on
boring
On another day i might have enjoyed this one, but it is not this day...
boring (with a french song). its like shit fleetwood mac
Call me picky but it’s hard to take an album seriously when you can hear the accent in the singers voices, aside from country music. That is kind of expected. Like I feel like I’m about to hear the audio book for the Lord of the rings trilogy. Ya, no. This has no reason to be on this list. I’d give it a one if these guys couldn’t sing
A French version of If You Gotta Go + other Dylan covers, okay Hey, it gave Eva Cassidy a chance to cover How Does The Time Goes. But it seems like we could have heard more Sandy Denny songs (looking at you Led Zep et al)
Inoffensive to the point of being a bit boring.
No private session used for Spotify. I did not care for the country/folk mismatch. This site is giving me a bunch of folk music recently, I am trying to not let fact I am getting sick of this music make me to jaded in this review.
Not for me but kind of gave Florence Welch vibes
I enjoyed this album and the song autopsy!
Okay
Ok album that didn't amaze me but didn't bother me. The album just felt kinda lukewarm. Don't think I would pick and choose to listen this again.
Still can’t stand the female vocals on these folky records. Some nice rocking moments, but mostly meh.
Poeh, folk muziek. Folk? Het is gewoon echt niet mn genre. FAVO: A Sailor's Life,
60’s Folk ⭐️Autopsy
Wasn't thrilled. Started out slow went on and on.
cookie cutter 60s was not impressed
Pretty mid folk.
Mäßig spannendes Folk Album
BORING
Good musicianship, but the vocals were to folky for me.
Just some bullshit
Well, they’ve done it again! Fairport Convention serve up another all skips album! To be fair, this is more listenable and the guitar work is more tuneful and intricate than on Liege & Lief. But it’s still a massive airball that seeks but never finds.
I'm still not convinced this is a serious band, has to be a goof. This was better than Liege and Lief, but still very far from good.
Joanie Mitchell sounding but not as good songwriting and had to borrow some Dylan songs. Not impressed
One other reviewer said it bored him to tears. I have to add that that this hippie crap was annoying as well. Who Knows Where The Time Goes? Well, in this case it stood still
Did not care for her voice at all
Not terrible, but could do without the several Bob Dylan covers. I guess I don't have to hear Bob's voice, so that's a bonus. Very folksy, which I can appreciate in small doses. Would rate it a 3 but dropping it because too many covers. I want to hear your own work, not somebody else's.
Many great recordings were made in the 1960s, and I have already had the opportunity to listen to quite a few of them as part of this project. Sometimes I wonder whether there was also boring, uninspired, and insignificant music back then. The answer is yes! “Unhalfbricking” by Fairport Convention meets all these criteria—from the boring songs to the band that isn't 100% tight rhythmically and Sandy Daniels' falsetto whining to the stuffy, eccentric cover, this album contains none of the highlights of its decade. Is it bad enough for one star? No, it's not actually annoying enough for that.
Pretty unremarkable.
It wasn't a bad album, just not my cup of tea personally
The opposite of what I like to listen to, but the other half liked it
Bad folk music - Bob Dylan songs not recorded by Bob Dylan
It's a bit too country for me... not a fan.
Richard Thompson is as good a guitar player as has ever been. He can do it all from finger picking to big riffs. Rock, pop, folk, standards. Whatever. Great songwriter to boot. But I have never found my way into Fairport Convention. Ironically - it's his folk upbringing that I have always felt separated him from the British blues pack. But I am unmoved by his actual folk period with FC.
2/5
Ok 👍
When I saw the cover, I was curious to see what awaited me. So it was supposed to be British folk. That's not necessarily a genre I like. But the cover was unusual and promised something out of the ordinary. Well, I didn't like it. Too saccharine, too much campfire romance. The story behind the album and the cover was interesting, but the music wasn't for me. 2/5
Sorry. Can't make it through this record. All respect to the late Sandy Denny, but that voice is nails on a blackboard to me. I get it. People dig her. And that's fine. I just don't. I'm heretical enough to feel the same about Joni Mitchell on certain songs. But even the ones where I'm not loving her words, I'm loving her poetry. Not my jam. Three stars because of respect for the music, but not for me.
Melodic. A 3. But not really my thing. Two songs of that album maybe. So probably a 2.
The best moments on here bring together the dark psychedelia of the Velvet Underground with the medieval folk style of UK psych, pairing droning guitars and violas working against each other a over sparse but insistent rhythm section to build intensity chaotic intensity while a monotone vocal delivers ancient melodies. The more they lean into the folksy pastoral or corny blues the worse it gets though. Favorite: Sailor's Life, Percy's Song
We had this group before and they were much more interesting when they were doing really old and/or traditional english folk music. This is just boring 60's vocalisms without anything really different to make it stand out. Like it's really nothing.
I felt connected to Amish people while listening to this. Like maybe suffering is what brings us closer to God. And maybe this music is a bit of just that
These vocals are grating as hell
The more folky songs were pleasant; the more psychedelic ones droned on a bit. Kind of mid.
I guess I like the music (particularly the songs leaning towards prog), but that singer lady can fuck right off back to whichever Renaissance Fair they found her at.
I was down with the first track on the album, "Genesis Hall"; that song was great. But I was pretty disappointed the rest of the album doesn't sound anything like that one. I felt this album peaked with the first track here and the rest is just kind of "whatever".
Just alright, oldies type of music that I don’t really mess with and a few songs that’s ere longer than I would have preferred.
I went to the Fairport Convention & all the swag sucked!
Great instrumentals but the vocals are not for me.
Country de los 60, muy aburrido.
Gentle enough and it the musicians created a lovely folky trance whenever the Doris stopped warbling for a while. Heard lots worse on the list, so a very generous 2 star rating.
This is difficult. Im trying to bury my prejudice for this sort of drivel. There are hints of something I may like on this with the instrumentation, but the woman's vocals are done in that hippie preachy style which just annoys me, a lot. Then 'Million Dollar Bash' came on with a totally different vibe and with some bloke singing. That was where the rot set in. Not my thing at all.
I mean ... Well ... It's not awful ...
Basically a more folky Jefferson Airplane. Chill but not super exciting
This band has quite the story asking with this album. They were so young! My sister and mother both loved this kind of folk so much that I now just associate it with teenage rebellion, overly sincere hippies and the smell of boiling beans. It is well done, so I can't bring myself to give it one star, but it still stirs more anger in me than your typical heavy metal album.
Very fun, makes me reminiscent of the east coast. Pretty outside what I traditionally listen to though. One of two songs of this nature are fine but a whole album wore on me
this feels so different (and better) than previous fairport we've heard. to a startling degree. this was somewhere between inoffensive and enjoyable to listen to.
Very meh. Only one decent song really.
bit slow
Not particularly engaging; 'A Sailor's Life' has endearing elements but drags at 11 mins. 'Who Knows Where the Time Goes?' is a charming ditty though.
A mix of slow and uptempo songs with some real highlights such as the long instrumental at the end of A Sailor’s Life or the beat of Si tu dois partir Highlights: - Cajun Woman - Percy’s Song - Genesis Hall
Singer has exactly the type of voice that is like nails on a chalkboard to me.
English folk singer/songwriter - this was good and reminded me of Joni Mitchell but it fell flat for me.
I've been listening to quite a bit of English folk music lately as part of this challenge, and Unhalfbricking by Fairport Convention is the latest addition to that journey. Let’s dive in. Overall, the album was enjoyable. While rooted in folk, it offers a nice variety in sound and style, keeping things from feeling too one-note. The lyrics are strong, and I was especially drawn to the vocals—Sandy Denny’s voice is beautiful, with a tone that reminded me a bit of Nico. The guitar work throughout the album is also excellent and adds real depth to the listening experience. Favourite tracks: I particularly liked A Sailor’s Life, Dear Landlord, Million Dollar Bash, and Cajun Woman. Least favourite: The album starts a bit slowly, and some of the earlier tracks—like Autopsy and Genesis Hall—felt a little dull and dragged in parts. Thankfully, it picks up momentum as it goes along. Album artwork: I love it—so distinctly '60s and full of character.
I mean, it was fine. But I didn’t care.
Not for me at all
