Reviews (page 4 of 8)

This was… fine. I always wanted to like this album more than I actually did, back when this was trendy in the indie circles. It’s got a pretty cool sound, but most of the songs are boring. At least until the last 3-4 tunes.

(70/100)

It starts with an interesting cover. I knew the band by name, but nothing more. They play experimental indie music. It’s not an easy listen, but—like when I listened to the record for the second time—something eventually sticks. In places, it’s perhaps comparable to Wilco; at times, the album also brings Sonic Youth to mind. I’m giving it 3 stars.

Was slow getting into this one, but I was feeling it by the end and was disappointed when the last track was over because I wanted to keep it going. Tough to pin down exactly how I feel about this one from just one listen tbh, might have to go back.

Desire Lines is a pretty cool track

I'm surprised this is on 4AD, but my knowledge of their catalog is 30 years old... I like the sounds used and the production. A melodic hypnotic din of dream pop with heaps of reverb and guitar overdriven just enough. Warm, fuzzy vocals in "Memory Boy" and "Desire Lines" Hints of Jeff Buckley, Matt Berry, and His Clancyness in "Sailing." Dandy Warhols-inspired grooves in "Fountain Stairs". Some Shins influence too, but maybe that's just "indie music"?? Feelgood mellow music for aging, slightly broken people.

Now that's an interesting start of an album... However, the voice becomes annoying after a certain time. The song "Basement Scene" is terrible.

A band of never heard of before. I liked this. It’s very melancholy, but I suppose I was in the right space to be listening to something with that vibe.

I didn't dislike this, and I didn't think I would like it going into it. I will say they really like their crunchy reverb sounds. I'm not sure I would add this into my regular rotation, but I wouldn't turn it off either. More than anything it's pleasant, but not particularly memorable.

it was good enough that me and my kid ended up listening to it twice

it's alright album Will I listen to again: 35%

Not bad - a bit plodding

Really pleasant, hipster leaning album. Liked some of the songs a lot. Probably won't become a regular spin, as I have my own faves that sound similar, but a really nice album nonetheless.

Twenty-six more to go and this is another anonymously forgettable album that is neither good nor bad. I'm fine with letting someone else love it, or hate it for that matter. It's just #975 to me.

fine but not remarkable to me, just fine.

Moody like i like it! Knew of them never did a full listen. Enjoyable

probably would've loved this in 2019 when i was a depressed 14 year old on tumblr

i just dont quite get it....

I love this style of indie rock. Just the right blend of soundscape to set a mood and angsty poems as lyrics. There weren't as many stand alone tracks as I would like, but as a whole this album really works. There's enough dynamics to let each track be it's own thing, while still creating a whole.

pretty nice

I'm not sure what to say here except that I found this album to be interesting. Liked Songs Added: Desire Lines Helicopter Coronado

Another one of those albums that seems like something that I’d enjoy more than I actually am enjoying it. Longer songs I felt didn’t develop into anything interesting, the shorter ones were quite enjoyable!

Gave this one a second listen because I wasn't sure after one listen how I really felt about it. The second listen confirmed that this is something I could definitely dig into and likely will. Kind of straight ahead indie rock with some really interesting uses of sound.

*Halcyon Digest* - 3 stars. Well produced, but not my cuppa (seems to be a recurring theme). The singer's voice gets weirdly dissonant sometimes in a way that i find unpleasant, though that may be the idea.

After a brief sick spell and some travel I found myself a week behind on consuming generated albums and thought I'd blitz a few during work today starting with this one. Ween did this dreamy pop stuff better two decades earlier, and if I was the Deerhunter drummer on this album I'd throw myself in the river. But I didn't mind it.

I think Helicopter and Earthquake are the two most beautiful 'indie rock' songs I've ever heard, the rest is pretty good.

I've never heard of this band, just the movie. This music was good for finding out your work friend's dog just died :( . Some fun sounds in this album and I like the 60s feel.

Fun lite indie rock fair

I need to listen to this one again a few times.

This was a little outside my normal listening range so I don't know that it's fair to discount this on only one listen, but I didn't see much that would indicate this would grow on me if I listened to it more. Definitely get the "shoe gaze" classification.

I think I'd want to listen to this again. It's my style, but it didn't fully grab me

Was excited to get this one because I remember really enjoying their prior album Microcastles back when it first came out. Unfortunately I didn't enjoy this one as much as I'd hoped. I liked the more dreamy soundscape focused tracks but didn't love the more acoustic ones, they were just a bit too boring for me. Still enjoyed it enough for a 3 star rating.

This is an interesting, but not terribly notable album. Pitchfork: 9.0 Rolling Stone: n/a

307/1001 Deerhunter - Halcyon Digest Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❓ There's a lot I like here, but equally too much that just passes me by. A pleasant 45 minutes or so regardless.

Top : Desire Lines Flop : Sailing

Ehhhh. I understand this music but I dont care very much. I could see this being someone's favorite stuff and it would be valid as hell just i get nothing from this. Does some neat little things but overall I just cant care. Fine enough while its on but even a few hours later I cant remember anything I heard. A big ol whatever I guess

No del todo convencido. No le encontré la magia. Quizá lo reencuentre en el futuro. Nota: 3.1

614/1001 2026.05.14 🌕🌕🌗🌑🌑

Bot a bad record but nothing sensational

Overall: 6/10 After the first song I was expecting this to be a lot dreamier and ethereal, but in a lot of ways it really just feels like another indie rock album. It's okay, even really good in parts, but I was a bit dissapointed. Especially because I've been told this is a very strange album. If this is strange to you, go listen to Mr. Bungle or something. Fav Song: Helicopter

Some genuinely gREAT stuff here, but like pains for the pure at heart and S.C.U.M. not enough to warrant inclusion on the best albums ever list

This is one of the better modern indie hipster choices in here. Reminds me of Beck at times, I wish they used their more ambient trip hop sound of 'earthquake' more.

Dreamy and wispy with zero intensity. Just what I've come to expect from this list. First impression: this is nothing to write home about. On subsequent plays I'm hearing little texture elements here and there that I missed the first time around. I think I get it. Another one that a younger me might have liked.

leuke indie sound: 3,5

The album name and cover art had me thinking this would be some weird industrial Texas-Chainsaw-Massacre-esque sounding thing. But it turned out to be quite benign. I want to like this for some reason, but it actually left me quite indifferent. The supposed heavy hitters (judging by Spotify listener count) were decent, but no real bangers in my book. And that's something that sticks with me throughout the record. The record basically sounds like a face-lifted and modernized '69 folk record. And it also pales in comparison to similar music release around 2010. To quote Dyatlov from Chernobyl: "Not great, not terrible".

Soft, intimate, a dark background like a caress.

I liked it better than I thought I would

really good production and sound design with an album hanging off of them that doesn't do anything particularly interesting

Nice vibe music.

I could see myself listening again but it didn’t really hook me in

Prelisten: Deerhunter is one of those bands I feel like I should have been into but just wasn't at the time. Looking forward to revisting.

Earthquake — the opening instrumental feels like a dream threatening to fall apart (that crunching percussion genuinely startled me when I first hear it). The soft electric guitar adds to the hazy aesthetic. The vocals feel suspended, like a voice in the head. The vibrating plucks as the song crescendoes and the rustling symbals are enchanting on the edge of becoming haunting. The end of the song feels like waking up after a dream, still living that dream world, but having it slip away from you. Don't Cry — a more standard rock start. The chorus has an old-school vibe passed through reverb. The song didn't leave that much of an impression on me. Revival — dense instrumentation: fuzzy bass, a banjo right at the top of the mix, hard percussions, and even some clapping. The song is short but fits a lot into that runtime. Sailing — opening a standard underwater effect. A very slow tempo, very intimate. The reverb adds to the narrator's isolation. While sweet, I do think the song's bareness can put most people off, especially with its 5 minute runtime. Memory Boy — the chorus is catchy. This song is very upbeat and poppy. The song has a lot of dynamics and the harmonica adds a lot of joy to the song. Desire Lines — the most pop chorus so far, still good. The second half 3 minute outro steals the show in this song, especially that lead guitar that moves from one addicting riff to another. Basement Scene — very repetitive. Least interesting instrumentation so far. The chorus isn't interesting enough to make up for that. Helicopter — the synths feel retro and add a unique flavour to this track. The vocals are a lot clearer than on other tracks. The heavy reverb on the kicks add a watery feel to the instrumental, emphasised by the sound of water dropping into water. Fountain Stairs — anthemic feel to this one, but I don't feel any connection to it. Coronado — lots of sax on this one; don't think it sounds very good, but it's there. I also think the audio effects on the vocals are too much on here, making the vocals feel a little expressionless. The majority of the instrumentation is still good, but another track I probably won't listen to much. He Would Have Laughed — the synth opening with the swirling drones are entrancing. A tribute to a former band member who had passed away, the narrator reflects on the theme of ageing and becoming lonely. The final 2 minutes of the track are the high point, which the vocals straining as they call out for company; the instrumental swells, closing in on them; and then it ends, abruptly, cut short. Favourite song: Earthquake Least favourite song: Basement Scene Overall: the opening song gave so much promise that rest of the album didn't live up to. That's not to say the rest of the album was bad: Revival, Memory Boy, Desire Lines, Helicopter are all good songs with emotional lyrics and compelling performances—even a song like Sailing has its own appeal—but they don't match the weirdness and dreaminess brought in by the opener. The closing track is also amazing and a touching tribute and a great way to close the album. The album starts and ends great but I feel like more creative risks could've been made regarding songwriting and song structure. Regardless, this was a good album with some tracks that will fascinate me for years to come. Rating: 3.6

No private session used for Spotify. I knew "Desire Lines" and thought it was outstanding. None of the other songs on this album struck me as more than average, though.

Knocking on the door of 4 stars. Really good.

Capable band with interesting ideas but the outcome feels like wallpaper. Nothing stands out 2.6

Mellow rock, nothing stood out but was pleasant

I wish I liked it more.

Maybe my first 3.5. Seems like it'd really grow on me over time.

Don’t know what to make of this one to be honest. I have played it twice and I can’t remember any of it! It didn’t however make me go ugh do a 3 I guess.

Not bad

Kinda boring.

Halcyon Digest by Deerhunter is a hazy, fuzzy indie rock album with some dreamy shoegaze vibes mixed in. It’s got this steady, kind of melancholy feel that I was really into, but it also feels like the kind of record that hits even better on a gray, rainy day.

Genuinely SHOCKED this album is on here. Or this band. What’s going on who made this list.

Dreamlike quality to this music. Desire Lines is an absolutely awesome song. The rest of the album is a nice listen too, with some other interesting tracks. But not sure it’s outstanding in any way. It’s solid alt/indie rock with a pop bent. Want to give it a 3.5.

It was okay. I did enjoy it, but I can't say I'm gonna listen to it again. It's pretty basic indie stuff, nothing bad, but it just kinda fades into the background music category. It didn't draw my attention with anything special.

"Sailing" is so fucking boring; it’s like nothing at all. The rest is average indie. I don't feel like there’s anything new here. I’ve heard it a thousand times before, and nothing really stands out to me. It’s alright to listen to. I don't hate it, but it’s not like I’d go out of my way to listen to it. It’s fine. Standard indie vocals and sounds that are easy to listen to; nothing too daring.

good, smth new, too pop

Pretty good, a little slow at points but I feel it’s one of those albums I could grow to like if I really tried. The last song was a standout to me, I found it had a progression very similar to death cab.

A lot of the songs feel like they build up with no real payoff, and the music can kind of blend into the background occasionally, especially with the vocals often being very buried in the mix. I did listen to this a couple of times and it did start to grow on me with the second listen though. The second half of the LP definitely has a lot more life to it

This was pretty chill shoegaze. I thought it started strong but it never got that good.

Cool moments butt heads here with some utterly forgettable indie.

A lot of the songs on this album blend together into an indistinguishable nothingness, but a pleasant one. I had a good time listening to this album, and that might be because it's a good album. Or it's because I've been subjected to one too many mediocre British rock bands recently on this list. I was a big fan of some of the outros on this album. Notably 'Sailing' and 'Desire Lines' both had interesting endings. Overall it was a decent album that I probably will not listen to again. Three stars. (Favorite track: Desire Lines.)

I dunno, I guess I kinda like some of this, but none of it really makes an impression. At least I don't hate any of it, and a lot of it is decent background music.

American Indie Rock. Meh.

Straight forward, US indie from 2010's where all albums had to be drenched in reverb on the vocals (it must have been a law or something). It all tends to be a tad naval gazing and the first half of the album all blends into one homogenous slab. Track 6 is the first time a songs begins to stand out from the mass. From there the album improves and the tracks where they stretch out and give themselves some room to breathe become some of the strongest ones on here. Best Tracks: Desire Lines; Helicopter; He Would've Laughed

Some of this was good, some not so much.

Very standard indie rock vibes. Mellow and at some points a bit boring, but overall a very cool sound. There were a few songs on there I’d definitely listen to again.

3.7 only one song I did not like. Just what I needed to hear on Tu when I listened

A lot of this is annoying, but it's well put together and very atmospheric. 2.5/5.0: Mixed

They’re not bad.

Intresting and indie. Feels a little weird for the list as there are so many better albums from that era but its fine i guess

Not really my thing. If gloomy indie rock is your thing you'll probably love this as it's of high quality. It seems like a record with interesting lyrics that need multiple listens to digest. However, as I don't find this style of music enjoyable, I won't be doing so.

An album that I had trouble placing on my first listen, but it intrigued me enough to give it at least a second and probably a third listen as well.

Weird but alright

Grew on me after some re-listens, but it mostly all just blends together and doesn’t stand out to me. Likes: Revival, Coronado, He Would Have Laughed

Trying to be a little too weird I feel, but definitely some cool sounds. Grew on me as the album went on, I like the whimsical pop vibe it has. Fave song: Desire Lines and Helicopter

Surprisingly decent

This one is interesting. It's an album I would normally have immediately skipped if not for this project. The music style is one of those disjointed, indie, hippy-style sounds that to me just feels like a mashup of audio until you kinda get music. Like if Nirvana didn't have rhythm. But as I listen more, it makes more sense to me. It is great background noise, but I don't find myself tapping my foot or bobbing along - it is just kind of there. I can see the appeal, I just don't think this sound is for me. I'm surprised this came out in 2010, feels like 1995, but this could be a much older band, I don't know anything about them.

Spacey and droney but with a decent amount of substance. Not my preferred genre but there are much worse indie records out there, this one definitely felt like it accomplished what it set out to do

A little bit nice, a little bit uneventful. Best songs: Desire Lines, Revival.

It's alright, nothing I feel compelled to revisit

something was missing here... felt like it could have been greater but it fell short Would I listen again: No Deserves to be on this list: maybe? probably not 2.5

Eary, repetetive beats, smooth voice. Nice 2000s alt-rock

It was pretty good but maybe a little too millennial for me. High 3 or low 4

Not bad, not great

There's a time and place I probably would have loved this, but those are not now. It's good, and there's some very enjoyable songs in here, but a lot of it just comes off as "sad bastard music". Or maybe it's just something I can ignore.

Overall: 5/10 I wasn’t wowed by this album. I do like this genre of music, but this album did not catch my attention. Not bad stuff, but didn’t resonate with my ears.

I enjoyed it. I’ll definitely listen again 3.5

Its ok. There are better bands of this genre.

A pleasant surprise. Thought the beginning had a nice shoegazy feel to it. Felt it lost a bit of focus through the middle, but I enjoyed this overall.

kind of hated initially but listen to more and i actually quite enjoyed it

It is very familiar many genres and bands but not 1001 before u die come on

Listenable

I wish I liked it better. It’s a good album, but doesn’t spark joy.

Opening and closing tracks were actually really enjoyable. I listened multiple times. I don't know if I'm supposed to call this shoegaze, but if it is, it's more engaging and enjoyable, while still being experimental, compared to others I've listened to on this list. Close to a 4-star, but there were a handful of tracks that got a little grating, and also, while I enjoyed it, I'm not really sure what makes it a best-of-all-time.

Folky and gentle. The vocal tracks and easy guitars complement each other very nicely as they're both soft on the ears and mind. The songwriting is reminiscent of Dylan, Baez and the like. This is a nice one.

I feel like I should love this more than I do. I can't put my finger on it. Something just feels off.

Dreamy indie pop-rock.

Sonically it’s damn near perfect but it’s not really my speed. Props tho

Meh, a couple of beat stretches here and there, nothing I will look back to though. Give it the round up compared to some of the stuff we’ve had. 2.5/5

I knew of this band loosely. Which is to say I knew their name and had heard a few of their songs. This was an ok listen. At times a few tracks stood out. But much of it just seems bored. Even the band themselves must’ve been bored when writing some of it. Clearly I’m not hipster enough to fully like this. And I don’t have a beard.

There are a few songs on here that I think are ok, but honestly this just doesn’t stand out as anything special. Don’t mind it, but there is a lot of other indie rock from this decade I’d prefer over this.

Probably the combo of the hype when it was released and the cover that make this feel like an album I've listened to many times before...but I don't I have. Not really familiar with any songs other than Helicopter and He Would Have Laughed. One of those bands that are obviously super talented, but tunes don't fully connect with me. Good stuff, not great. 3.24/5

Pretty good. I’m not surprised that I didn’t listen to this when it came out, it’s a little too atmospheric for me. But, it started slow and eventually got into a groove a bit more.

not as gothic or gloomy as i was expecting. well-executed, but pretty generic. Memory Boy kinda sounds like Darlin' by The Beach Boys which kinda just makes me wish i was listening to The Beach Boys instead. deserves to be one of the 1001? i could have gone without listening to this but it does have some relevancy and is pretty well liked. mayyyybe.

This album had some okay songs on it. Really don't know what the big fuss is about them though.

"Earthquake" initial thoughts - Oh yay it's edgy stoner music. Weird/surreal black+white trailcam album art. Vocalist mumbling while shoving the microphone into their mouth. After that the album totally changed, which surprised me (in a good way). Bits were kinda dull and uninteresting (e.g. "Sailing"), but I enjoyed it a lot more than the first track made me thought I would. I find the vibe of this album a bit confusing, it's up and down and all over the place, to the point that I'm not sure what it's trying to be. Wait... Was that a saxophone (I don't actually know)?! Most of it is entirely listenable though. Highlights: "Memory Boy" "Desire Lines" "Coronado"

I feel kind of strange, because I thought the music was all pretty well done, but it inspired no reaction from me to speak of. So, it was perfectly cromulent I guess.

Solid indie rock, but nothing to let me come back to it

Decent listen! 3/5

A good album, I liked Don't Cry, Memory Boy and Desire Lines the most.

A fun and interesting album, an enjoyable first listening 3/5

Pretty weird stuff lol. Kinda folky indie vibes but they use some interesting musical elements. Sometimes it’s a little eerie. The singer seems to be the focal point, the music can be super mellow and quiet, very slow too. Ig this is alternative indie. The way the vocals are delivered reminds me of the Beatles. Overall a couple unique songs but nice indie vibes

I tend to really like indie rock, and while this album has some quite alright songs, there are some that are annoying, and no songs that were truly bangers.

Halcyon Digest was a pretty good album for what it was. I've never heard of this album or this band but i figured going in that this would be an indie rock sort of album even without reading the genre tags. The album itself did have some really nice moments especially when it had all the guitars and the synths and other electronic noises to back it up. I am also glad that it never really got abrasive at any point even when it had every opportunity to due to this album also being a shoegaze and noise pop album. Some of the songs here do have a bit of same face syndrome and there was also the fact it ended rather abruptly but overall, i still enjoyed my time with this album. Best Song: Desire Lines Worst Song: Fountain Stairs

Every song sounds mostly the same with slight variations. The album isn't bad at all, but can definitely get boring. I think you have to be in a specific mood for shoegaze like this. I don't hate it, but it's not my favorite.

Enjoyed it while listening to it but now hours later I remember nothing about it

Pleasant enough. Very pitchfork stage at Primavera. There are lots of records like this, not sure why this was singled out for this list. But it’s consistently good with moments of beauty.

Listened to it twice but couldn't get into it

Starts slow but does get better. Not an amazing album but not bad either.

It’s a vibe. On a day I am with the vibe, I would dig it. Today, it’s aight.

Oh no, indie rock. This stuff tends to leave me cold. I am not the target audience.

Kinda like dreamy soft rock. Decent background music I guess.

Another pleasant surprise. Going to listen to it again soon.

I know type of girls to listen to this music. I know people attracted to this kind of girls. The rest is history. Almost 4 for me, maybe I am a pretentious piece of shit?

It’s decent.

I know this is rich coming from somebody whose favorite genre is Slowcore, but this album put me to sleep. It's a shame because the textures they are able to produce are so intriguing; tracks like Earthquake and Helicopter have unbelievable soundscapes, but they just don't go anywhere. Each track stays in one place and I found myself just getting sick of each song before it was over. Sailing, Coronado, and He Would Have Laughed drag, and that ending cutoff is so abysmal it made me genuinely upset for a minute, I thought my speakers just died. Don't get me wrong, I can see why people like this album. The textures are so thick and immersive, and while the songwriting isn't my cup of tea it's by no means distasteful. I think my main gripe with the album and why I'm inclined to give it such a low rating is because I feel it could've been so much better. If more songs went anywhere this would be minimum a full star higher.

Never heard of this before today. It's kind of folk poetry set to music. Very nice the whole thing works very well. The music is well produced and full without being overbearing. It's extremely chilled out and really easy for me to listen to while working. I'm adding this to my favorites so I can give it another listen later at home on the HiFi.

I listened to this when it was new but couldn't remember it at all. Listening back, it sorta just passed me by. I did like the last song quite a bit though. 3/5

Not all that impressed

A good listen

Sounded horrible at the beginning but grew on me

Unremarkable

Nice chill indie rock

Run of the mill indie rock, nothing fabulous

Too 2010 for me :/

Interesting indie rock album from a band I hadn't head before. A mix of sounds from Strokes like rock to almost shoegaze. Grows with repeated listening.

Fine. Too ethereal

Men i grunden "bra".

Svag trea.

Pretty cool indie album, I expected this to be some punk BS. Helicopter sounds like an MGMT song. Gonna stand with a 3 here as I listened to this while working, but I could see a 4 being possible with another listen or two. Definitely got better in the second half.

The album felt a little mushy, but there were some cool sounds, the first three tracks and last were worth the listen

Another artist I did not know. It was pleasant to listen but nothing really comes out of it. I'll be perfectly fine in listening to it again. 3.5

Pretty good. Knew a few songs prior. Wasn't blown away though.

This was ok, had some interesting sounds and reminded me of a less good Radiohead in spots, just lacking the charisma and depth. Decent indie rock but not top tier.

First listen

Just meh

Nice but fairly forgettable stuff 2.5 rounded up

Start Here

3 Waiting in the rain at rail road crossing is the feeling I get.

Pleasant, competent but wholly unremarkable 00s indie.

Kind of like driving through Death Valley. Interesting, but all kinds of blends together into a pleasant yet forgettable experience.

I mean it’s fine middling indie

Not sure if I really have heard of this band. Interesting music.

Good album need to give it another listen though

Flaccid

A few interesting songs but nothing very special

Torn between 3 and 4 just felt a bit too uninspired in parts to deserve a 4. Still nice listening

En oikein tykkää miten vokaalit in haudattu ison kaiun ja eq:n taakse. Indie rokkia, ei sillein mitään hirveän erikoista eikä omaa suosikkia. Parhaat: Desire Lines, Coronado

It was fine.

Perfectly decent, but nothing to call home about

British alt

Alt rock, lo-fi vibe

I finished not bad but a bit boring overall ig just a similar sound for every song

I wasn't enjoying the first half much at all. Too dreamy and echoey. Some songs sounded like demos or early takes. Then a couple of the songs near the end were OK and different, and bump it up to a mediocre rating, a low 3/5.

This era of Indie Rock is in my wheelhouse so I had a decent time with this but I have a hard time defending an album like this getting on the list, especially one so dreary and moody like this. 6/10

Standard indie rock, but I didn’t hate it. I’m not sure it needs to be on the list with The Beatles and Led Zeppelin, but it was a pretty good representation of 2010 indie rock for future generations.

Ok indie music. Calm vibes but two listens and I can't remember a single young unique

This album, from start to finish, gave me the feeling of an ethereal ambivalence toward life. Almost as if life was encapsulated in a dream-like state: along for the ride, with little or no control. Veiled from full experience, or slightly inebriated, to soften the edges of reality.

Weird lil album I kinda fw it tho

Probably need a relisten but I think the vibes were good?

A nice, indie album. I was really vibing with He Would Have Laughed today. 7.5/10.

Listened to this with my Grandma. Asked her what she thought of it. She responded with an unrelated answer because she clearly can’t hear anymore. So I guess we’ll never know what she truly thinks of Deerhunter. Overall this album was pleasant to listen to. Your stereotypical indie album imo.

This album felt like background music to me. It was chill. But, I didn't find any song that I absolutely loved

Different! But I liked it. Was very layed back, but the instrumentation would get weird at times, which offered some interesting dynamics. From those first few drum hits when the album started I thought I was in for a bad time lmfao. But it mellowed out quickly. Overall, had some good and some not so good throughout. Favorite song: Desire Lines 6.5/10

Correcto

Couple bangers but not enough to make it more than meh.

Never heard or heard of this band before. Can’t decide if this is a two or a three. Will land on a three, I guess.

Not my style

It was ok

Best Track - "Memory Boy"

Never heard of this band at all but Wiki review and other 1001’s reviews convinced me I was in for a treat. And it was. Not a bad album at all. Not something I wish to own but good enough to save it to my streaming service of choice. Was hard to buttonhole which is good because the band were obviously trying to be different. Closest I can compare them with are the Eels. That’s the band not the long slimy variety popular with cockney’s. 3/5 12/9/25

Pretty good, ambiance based indie rock. (?) Revival is a really good song

I don't see why this is on the list.

I don’t think I’ve ever listened to a Deerhunter album before, but I remember this album being on several best of 2010 lists. I listened to a lot of indie music in the 2010’s, but Halcyon Digest somehow passed me by. I’m not quite sure what to expect from this album, but I’m hoping that I’ll find a new favorite discovery. Halcyon Digest was pretty uneven in my opinion, but the best songs on this album made it a pretty good experience overall. I thought the album was at its best when the guitar tones were unique, and when the percussion contrasted with the shimmering guitar playing. I found this album was at its weakest when the guitar playing was bland and the percussion was minimal. The best melodies on this album were nice, and I enjoyed the overall relaxing vibe. I really enjoyed the percussion on “Earthquake.” It sounded harsh to me, but it created a really great contrast with the beauty of the main melody. “Memory Boy” was really good too. I liked the punchiness of the percussion and the upbeat sound. The guitar playing was some of my favorite on the whole album. The drums on “Desire Lines” reminded me a lot of Funeral-era Arcade Fire, and it had more guitar tones that I enjoyed, specifically during the outro. I loved the echoing effect on “Fountain Stairs.” I thought this song had a great rhythm that went well with the shimmering guitar. The guitar playing on “He Would Have Laughed” was incredibly unique. I loved that shimmering effect, and the heavy bass and percussion rounded out the sound nicely. While this album did have some nice songs on it, the rest of it was pretty forgettable to me. I can’t see myself seeking this album out again, just because it was so uneven, and if I were in the mood for a vibe like Halcyon Digest, there are plenty of other albums out there that do the same thing, but better.

Getting into the first track I like the sonics of it but the distorted vocals felt bothersome. That unfortunately plagues the entire album. The production was a highlight though and it establishes the lowkey, dreamy, and mellow vibe that the album was going for. The songs that stand out, stand out fine but any of the other songs on here I just don't care for em. At the very least it had a great outro. Overall, it was a solid album. Top 3: Helicopter, Revival, and He Would Have Laughed Worst: Sailing and Basement Scene 3.00-3.50/5

Half listened but sounded good I think i need to listen again

Standouts : Desire Lines, Helicopter, Revival Not bad, just a little bit forgettable/boring to me overall and I don't think it flows really well as an album.

This is a solid album, with good songs - particularly after the first few songs. But, I won't be coming back too often to listen to it as it is quite dreary throughout.

Genre: Neo-Psychedelia A more mellow, more arranged take on the aughts Indie Rock boom, this had some really solid tracks, but wasn’t altogether my favorite listen. Will look to revisit, as Desire Lines and He Would Have Laughed were wonderful, so perhaps a 2nd listen will do this one better. For now, this was pretty good. 3/5

Interesting stuff here. Would have sworn they were British. Beatles inlence I hear. Very poppy rock music but certainly not commercial. Pretty unique.

Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Great record but I would have picked several others of theirs before this one to have on the list.

Interesting music. Often very quiet and somber. Sometimes very Brit pop esque. It's cool to hear some droney dream pop jams on this list. I can really hear Arcade Fire in these songs. John Lennon must have been a huge influence on this singer, at least on some of the songs. I liked it, but this isn't really the kind thing I would keep in rotation.

Pretty chill, but maybe too chill. I got bored. Not bad... just not for me.

Second half of the album better than first

solid indie album that’s aged better than many others. didn’t grab me super tight, but it’s a pleasant listen

A nice reunion with "helicopter" and "he would have laughed". The other tracks I find a bit dull.

Dream pop has this issue for me where things don't tend to leave an impression on me. And anything psychedelic often faces the same issue for me. So I guess I should have seen this coming, but I'm still surprised that I remember absolutely nothing of what I listened to yesterday other than it didn't sound terrible Standouts - 3/5

I liked it. made me want to hear more from this artist

I was expecting more from this one tbh

This one is fine, I’m not sure if I’ll add it to my favorites or anything, but it was interesting hearing a recent album like this. I’d say three out of five, I didn’t dislike it, but I didn’t absolutely love it or anything.

Nice background hum.

it’s okay

Interesting

This is fine. There's nothing here that's really standing out to me. Each song blends into the next, but mostly in a way that blurs/obscures the whole project. I have no previous connection to this album so this isn't hitting for me.

3 - It was fine

Pretty neat; not bad music but focuses on meaning over enjoyment

Perfectly acceptable, but not groundbreaking indie rock. Enjoyable but not breathtaking.

Of the modern (past 20 years) albums we’ve listened to so far, this is definitely the best one. Not that I found it to be an absolute classic, at least not on first listen, but I enjoyed it all the way through. A couple songs made it to my favorites list. Overall I’d say really good, but not instantly great. That opinion may change given another listen or two.

First listen and I’m underwhelmed. It’s an okay listen but nothing outstanding. I’m a fan of that dreamy, shoegaze sound that opens the album. I love the jangly guitar on Memory Boy, which reminded me of Stereolab and 80s indie pop. But it gives it a slightly inconsistent feel - some tracks are lazy soundscapes and others are a bit more uptempo. It’s the sort of band you stay to listen to in the student union. I really don’t find much of the album to be remarkable, but it’s decent enough and a pleasant listen.

Pleasant but quite dull, wouldn't put it on again.

Pretty neat

Pretty creepy album cover, pretty good music.

Just a bit too Indie for me Best Song: Desire Lines Rating: 6.5/10 (Fine) Stars: 3/5

Don't Cry and Revival are good. The very ending of the album is nice. The whole thing has an overall nice sound to it.

As it went along I liked it more than I thought. Very chill.

Pleasant indie rock that's enjoyable enough, but Deerhunter has never been one of my favorites from this era of indie. The first half is sometimes jangly and sometimes hypnotic, with the jangly songs not sounding different from other artists and the hypnotic songs not making an impression. Things turn around with Desire Lines, which feels more immersive than the other tracks. The album continues to be much better after it; Coronado has some great horns and there's cool drumming on the closer (though that one does kind of overstay its welcome by getting repetitive by the end). Would get a lower score if it didn't pick up by the end.

I like the sound. I'll revisit. there were'nt any super standout tracks, but a few I liked

Not bad

As is the case with many of their other albums, Deerhunter creates a complete sonic world on *Halcyon Digest* with fairly simple ingredients. On their best tracks the band delivers solid pop songs in a post-punk style without lapsing into the clichés of either genre. On this particular record the songwriting is somewhat inconsistent but the high points (including the epic "Desire Lines") are stellar.

I feel like I should like this more but it just doesn’t do much for me

It's alright. The music has some interesting moments, but didn't really care for the vocals.

Torn between 3 and 4. Some really good stuff but also some stuff that just dragged and wasn’t that appealing. I think I overall land on a 3

Meh, not me again but it wasn't terrible.

Listening to this to wind down on a work afternoon was probably the right spot to listen to this one, I imagine it would have been a little dull otherwise. I dig the vibe this was going for but it was perhaps a bit too aimless for my tastes, I couldn’t name a single track on this one off the top of my head even after a relisten.

Could not pay attention to the music as I was too distracted by the album cover.

3/5 its pretty good

first song is amazing, the rest ranges from very good to kinda ass

15 years I’ve been meaning to actually sit and listen to this album, fifteen. I had friends, acquaintances I suppose, who swore it was the second coming of something. “Deerhunter” I’d hear time and again as we talked about bands all night, danced a bit, smoked a lot of cigarettes, pretended we were across each other’s book recommendations. It was usually The Bird, or that venue behind it where the bigger acts would perform (Machinedrum, Lapalux, OneOhTrixPointNever) – the name escapes me. Always interesting nights; conversations that you’d be all in on, half out of it, in between and in the middle of. People you’d see in new lights, under different lights, in new circumstances, in the background. And always, always horrific mornings after. Ones you’d recover from, but maybe only just. Fifteen years. Wow. Anyway, there’s a record on. It’s good, yeah, who did you say it was by again? Oh yeah, Deerhunter, I just couldn’t quite hear it properly that’s all, yeah. It’s good this, I’ve been saying so for weeks. The second coming of something, surely.

This is probably going to be one of the reviews in which I'll type an ellipse "[...]" later to indicate the passing of time during which I'll have changed - or fortified - my opinion. For now, I had a decent enough time listening to the whole thing. Even going to say that it seems like a proper pick for 2010s indie rock you need to make a list with. But, the cover and the first song and its sound had set me up for something it largely didn't deliver. Something darker. Instead, jingly-jangly garage pop. Some Oh-oh-hooohh arena era Coldplay tangents. Cool production but the fuzz and grit - while it's some good cement to glue it all together - doesn't really manage to obscure how little this album's indie hodgepodge songwriting does for me. [...] Turns out, not much change after the break: meh. Meh plus, like 3.8

It’s fine? I feel like I should have more to say about it but I don’t.

Self-indulgent, self-important, shoe-gazing, navel-gazing, hipster, unremarkable and generic are some of the words used by reviewers here to describe this album and I think those are really appropriate.

A band I never really got into despite wanting to. I think I used to like them actually. I don’t know

Favorite Track: Revival

This MIGHT be something I'd listen to on my own. The overarching sound and production is interesting, very dreamy/foggy like with plenty of reverb. Didn't "wow" me or anything though, there's probably better indie album reps that could feature on this list.

Sounds like an artifact found in a dusty attic, wrapped in faded lace and old Polaroids, humming with the static of memory. It’s spectral, melancholic, and oddly comforting, like a half-remembered childhood dream.

I had friends who were into Deerhunter back in the day, but they never resonated with me. I was kinda hoping this would be different, and I did like some of it, particularly towards the end. Problem is, much of this album is incredibly boring.

Its quite good. Relaxing, good vibe None of it particularly memorable but maybe that comes with repeat listens, but honestly it's quite nice so maybe id get there some day Is it a 3 for now with room for future growth? Maybe

Not bad background tunes

Spirit of shoegaze meets Flaming Lips-style verbed-out instrumentation and repeating, plaintively sung lyrics. It's like a watercolour wash of garage indie rock.

Not unpleasant to listen to - but not really breaking any new ground here.

Indi Album, hörbar aber auch nicht mehr. Teilweise anstrengend.

5.5/10

Very much middle of the road for this list. Not a bad listen but I didn't really like any of the individual songs. Some songs had a good instrumental but that's about all that's worth talking about on this album.

I find these shoegaze albums so hard to rate. Like, I did vibe at times. But this is something I’d put on in the background and never engage with. Something to set the mood and not to enhance it. Good but not essential. 3/5

This is the album for sitting in the rain staring out the window spiral into a fit of depression.

Am I missing something? Why do so many indie heads cream their jeans to this?

Classic Indie band. Nothing outstanding or overly offensive. Just middle of the road. Didn’t hate it, but it’s nothing I’d be excited about diving into deeper. Felt very experimental a few too many odd beats or distorted vocals for me.

Snoozefest all the way through. I guess everyone should listen to this before they die in the same way everyone should drink water before they die. The best part of this album was when LCD Soundsystem autoplayed after.

I can imagine people like it, but I don't.

It's just fucking weird, man. 3/5 because it's not bad music, just weird. would be a 3.5/10.

Decent indie vibes. Singing isn't bad, lots of auto tune. My favorite song is Desire Lines.

B Earthquake 3 Don't Cry 3 Revival 5 Sailing 3 Memory Boy 4 Desire Lines 4 Basement Scene 4 Helicopter 3 Fountain Stairs 3 Coronado 3 He Would Have Laughed 3 I came in with Revival as a top song of mine, but hadn’t really listened to anything else. It’s a fun time.

Absolutely immaculate soundscapes and textures. I tended to enjoy the sounds more than the actual songwriting, but don't let me give you the impression that this album was anything other than pleasant.

It took me a full listen to understand the tone the group wanted. I kept expecting something closer to a Radiohead/Deftones, but the mood stayed pretty consistent throughout. I didn't connect with it too much, but it wasn't bad in the background

Modern alternative music, "Desire Lines" +1

Liked it, not heard it before, pretty dark and moody

- Totally pleasant, but I have listened to this album a half-dozen times now (typically while working) and I am not sure I could say anything distinguishing about it. It washes over you...not sure if that is a good thing or a bad thing. - I think "Revival" is my favorite?

Curious vibe. Only ever really listened to agoraphobia by them and thought it was good, this wasn't as amazing except for a few good songs.

pretty good, i was not paying that much attention tbh but would listen again. good background working music

There are a lot of indie rock bands that fall into this category. It’s a genre I really enjoy, so that’s not a knock—but many bands tend to sound alike and don’t do much to stand out. Deerhunter kind of falls into that group. There are some great songs on this album, but too many tracks just blend together. For me, they’re more of a playlist band than an album band. The problem is, a 3 feels a bit too harsh, but a 4 feels a little too generous.

This is a strong 3, borderline 4. I like a few of the tracks: "Earthquake", "Desire Lines", "Helicopter". I like both the tunes and some of the unique sounds. The rest of the tracks are fine.

4/30/25. First time listening to Deerhunter, reminded me of more modern Jangle Pop with a lot of today's indie sensibilities. Some good songs here.
