Reviews (page 5 of 7)

WHAT I ENJOYED: I guess I like that someone took a chance on these guys (& eventually one became the Nick Cave we know and enjoy today) who sound like...they're doing exactly what they want to do. The longest songs are on the first half of the album so it goes by faster in the second half. GRIPES: They're doing what they want to do which is creating music that I really can't imagine a lot of people would enjoy. Awful, screeching guitars, plodding bass and drums, vocals that leave much to be desired. Can't forget about: unintelligble lyrics, pervasive gloomy and angry tone. RECCOMMENDED IF YOU LIKE: imagining Louis Armstrong in a post-punk band, going to shitty punk shows, unpleasant noises that might be classified as music by edgelords, gnashing of teeth. #450 revealed / #503 rated

More of a fan of new wave which followed on from post punk. Detected shades of The Stranglers in this album. Overall a bit too screechy on the vocals for my taste.

Dark, noisy, great drums and bass. I didn't really like any songs once I was past the first couple, but it's good to hear what NC was up to at that point.

I wonder how many of the people on the train would have looked at this middle-aged woman and guessed that she was listening to tracks called Hamlet (pow pow pow) and Big Jesus Trashcan. I appreciate this for what it is and the undoubted genius of Nick Cave but in 1982 I was following a different path. And I still am tbh

I was tempted to rate this a 1/5, but there were moments where it looked like there was some ideas of musicality. But for the most part it was a noisy shapeless approximation of punk, and was a bit grating.

Oh look, another terrible Sex Pistols wanna be band.

a bit too rough for my taste

No. I love The Bad Seeds but this is too far gone. Every time the band get a bit musical, Nick has to go full scream.

bit like the cramps but much worse

Not really my thing

There are only two reasons this album is on the list: 1) Nick Cave 2) Ed Roth's cover art Add 1 and 2 together to equal the smug-critic-highbrow-self-effacing-ego that justifies its placement on this list. 2/5

Man it wasn't the day for this album! I appreciated it, the artistic vision especially. But I did not vibe with it. Needs the right environment. Will revisit, but more of a bad seeds fan I think.

I'm glad I didn't go to this birthday party. Only a 2 by virtue of not being as atonal as some of the other albums.

Not the worst thing that I've heard, but still not a fan. Though it did grow on me a bit throughout the record, still a 2.

I love Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, but never really like The Birthday Party. Too much noise and not enough melody for me.

wasn’t my thing, sounded pretty weird

I appreciate weirdness of experimental "post-punk" and Nick Cave in particular. But, I can't say that I "like" it or that it necessarily had any positive impact on future genres of music.

I didn't care for this at all

Where’s the Country Music? 😂

Less annoying than expected. However, one can peacefully die without having listened to this record.

This flirts with territory I enjoy, but never quite enters it.

I'm glad that's over now, the strange sounds shall haunt me, under the floor boards they beat with a rhythmic drumming of my torment.

If you are like, "That cover looks bad ass" then you'll love this album, it evokes that vibe.

too much noise for me.

Had absolutely no idea what to expect based on that album cover, then I heard the opening track and went "Oh, of course." I've heard music like this primarily live, played in someone's basement or garage in Dinkytown by a band I've never heard of and will not hear of again. I could appreciate the vibe this would bring when shoulder to shoulder in a houseshow environment. It made for strange listening at the office. This music didn't bother me or anything, and there were some moments of greatness, but the massive sound of it all started to sound the same. My favorite thing about this album is the bass. Highlights: The Dim Locator, Several Sins, Kewpie Doll

Was that a good or bad day

bit of a mess really

Not my thing. Loud, abrasive and those are the redeeming qualities of this one. I know it’s Nick Cave, but it’s just too chaotic and incoherent to even be considered something as a jumping off point for me.

OK, nothing stands out.

This is just a little too chaotic for me. I look forward to seeing more Nike Cave once his sound developes some more.

A little too “challenging” for me to get into with only 1 or 2 listens

Just not really my cup of blood. It's a bit raw, but I understand some people love their punk to be metal-fied.

As if one iteration of Nick Cave is bad enough, they’re subjecting us to two, and this one is considerably worse. I’m not into noise rock and hated almost every second of this. I did actually like Several Sins though, which is saving this from being rated a 1.

Groupe post-punk Australien.

Really not doing anything for me. Slog to get through.

No way the same guy sings this and "Abattoir Blues" Update: I sampled all of Nick Cave's albums and it's fascinating how he gradually transitions from this vibe to chill and good

Was this supposed to be a carbon copy of DK or The Cramps? Jello’s voice with the cramps evil rockabilly. Only listen to this in October 😅

Still a bit rough, but an indication of things to come

I am the k-i-i -i - i ng I am the k-i-i -i - i ng I AM THE K-I-I -I NG 1984 brittiläinen post-punk new wave klassikko Release the bats hyvä kappale..

Interesting, but nothing I would listen to. Singer is a crazy man, and the band sound terrible but in a good way.

This abum probably means a lot to a certain scene but i cant get down with it. Listenable at the very least

Prácticamente ruido

Wow nick cave in the early days is a great shift from Ghosteen. I read he was quite wild in the younger days and these punk beginnings fit well. Did I want to enjoy it? Did I actually? No. I found it inaccessible and didn't know what to think soz Nick

Prefer other Nick Cave stuff, this is meh

It was not that great. Nick Cave has better music out there.

This was... really something. It gets two stars for being vaguely musical. Loved the creepy/weird album artwork.

Perfect description

Zu hart für mich

Based on the album art I was hoping this would be rad. I also kind of like Nick Cave. But this didn't really do it for me.

Meh, the Doors from Wish?

A bit crap! I really don't like Nick Cave and this is just a dismal juvenile effort. It brings to mind a bunch of unwashed teenagers in their mom's basement

Heard before: no One thing for sure, Nick Cave commits to the bit. Second time through, I get the noise-blues, rambling wreck of a garage band aesthetic. Proto-Bad Seeds, even younger and scuzzier. Maybe I'll revisit after my next Beefheart binge. Top tracks: Big-Jesus-Trash-Can, Release The Bats, Dead Joe

I mean, I tried. I thought that I shouldn't listen to all the reviews and try to hear this album with no judgement. I thought the first song ('She's Hit') was alright but definitely not really my kind of music. Then, Nick Cave started GROWLING like some kind of rabid dog at the start of 'Dead Joe' and I decided this wasn't really for me.

Bad. Just bad. Not captain beefheart bad, but bad.

Þetta var ekkert sérstaklega að heilla. Vantar einhvern sjarma í þetta post-paunk.

This one is hard to rate. Some songs can be enjoyable but it is hard because of all mad chaos going around. Sometimes it is unbearable. I don't belive this belong on this list. It is more like abstract piece of art of painter who was wondering how much abstract can he get. 2,4/5

The album just seemed lazy and slapped together. Nothing redeeming

Well, that sure was something. I didn't hate it, but it felt like it lacked direction in an off-putting way. At least the album cover is pretty accurate.

As a Nick Cave fan I was intrigued to dive into this, and I respect the chaos of it all, naturally. But with my Cave-tinted glasses off I can't say I enjoyed it that much. There are some good tunes (Several Sins is my favourite), but the band generally seemed more intent on making an unholy racket.

A very poor album, with the exception of two tracks that I actually really like. The vocals on this are either between terrible or somewhat decent, no in between. Most of the songs sound like unintelligible nonsense, for genuine songs that sound good you can play Russian roulette on shuffle. This barely scrapes a two. Favourites: She’s Hit / Several Sins

Ugh. I wish I could appreciate the satire underneath this album. I wish I could appreciate Nick Cave leaning so hard into post-punk. But... no amount of Kustom Kulture or self-awareness can save this. This really sucks. The production's terrible to the point where every song sounds like it was recorded through a wall-- besides the vocals, which are by far the worst aspect of the entire album. Nick Cave was not fit for growling, good lord. An ultra-compressed jpeg of Rat Fink. 2/5.

2/5 stars. I never "got" nick cave. Still don't

Genres: Post-punk, punk blues Formed: Australia in 1977 Run time: 13 songs, 47 min, 16 sec The group were originally known as The Boys Next Door. The band moved to London, England, where they were championed by John Peel but only achieved limited success. Probably due in part to the dark nature of their lyrics and stage shows. After they split in 1983 many of the members went on to have acclaimed careers: Nick Cave (singer and songwriter), Mick Harvey (multi-instrumentalist and songwriter), and Rowland S. Howard (singer, songwriter and guitarist). Spotify: Least popular song: less than 65k Most popular song: over 2M I partially listened to the album but couldn’t find any aspect to enjoy. There is a lot of screaming and screeching that is just unpleasant to listen to. They achieved cult status with an avid fan base, but it is so niche, that commercial success was never going to happen. Listen Again?: No My Rating: **

Well, you can't say it's not energetically performed. It just happens to go off the rails very easily, and turns from music to just... background noise that might have a groove somewhere underneath it. Favorite track: "Dead Joe"

Barely listenable. Had some ok ideas but was generally pretty grating.

i can’t say that i liked it but i definitely liked it more than i thought i would. every once in a while a little primus would shine through, especially on 6” Gold Blade, which was cool

I get it, but it’s not really something I’m going to come back and listen to again

ej l'ai trouvé sur youtube... J'aurais pu m'en passer c'est weird et pas tr`s bon. 2.75

I had never heard of this record and that wasn't a bad thing. Too much punk / raw noise for me to really enjoy.

Gritty AF. Glad to learn about Nick Cave’s roots. Boy he got A LOT better with age. The gem on this one was “Several Sins” but most was hard to endure.

Taking the worst things about post punk and amplifying it in this mess.

Not what I was expecting

Mest så ruffig repetetivt bös. Som en fattigmans the cramps

Hm. This was rough. Some ok sounding stuff but this is well beyond post punk if you ask me.

Oooh, why is it so shouty, and why are they so angry, you can barely make out the lyrics, there isn't even a melody to most of them. Nick Cave was obviously very unhappy when he was younger.

Absolutely mad album... Extremely discordant and just weird af Saved tracks: The Dim Locator, Several Sins, 6" Gold Blade

POW POW POW!!! Has it's moments that I really liked... Too much random nonsense though.

Slightly better than anticipated tbf

Punk and a bit of jazz with a lot of screaming and harsh tones. It took a while for me to think about why this would be ranked so high on Australia's albums of all time, but there's a straight line from this to KGLW

I love Nick Cave. I've seen him over a dozen times in various stages of his career, but not this early port-punk phase. And listening to this - is proof that progress is possible, change is good, and that Nick was a very angry young man. It's sort of punk, but not really. Abrasive. I think I would have loved it when I was younger, but now I'm crusty it's just too too much.

At least Immortan Joe had that flame-throwing guitar guy

Not for me.

Harsh, discordant and chaotic. The most acquired of acquired tastes.

There’s definitely a space for music that’s not afraid to get down and dirty with grungy, scuzzy instrumentation and primal vocals - this LP misses that mark by being a musical slog fest with fucking annoying mumbling on top.

This album was hard to enjoy. It does have a song called Big-Jesus-Trash-Can, so there must be more to this band than is shown after one listen.

I see that this album has the 6th lowest global score at 2.13 and its headlined by Nick Cave so this should be interesting. The horrible album cover doesn't set expectations too high either, and from that perspective it doesn't disappoint. Dark and challenging music, that's also horribly recorded, it sounds like the drums and guitars are 10 feet away from the mic. You really need to be in the mood for this, and I wasn't.

I continue to be perplexed by Nick Cave: This album seems like it was made in a lab for me, and the song and vocal choices make it slide past slightly-annoying. A good cover and hints at a matching aesthetic, at least.

No no no

Last album you say ?

I didnt like it

enough of this metal

The cover made me hope I was going into some 80s metal album, but instead it was some insane post-punk with just a lot of incoherent rambling and yelling. Sadly didn't enjoy this much, though some of the riffs are cool. Favourite: Dead Joe

I really, really wanted to like this. But I didn't. I see the influence on a lot of music that I am a fan of, but for whatever reason this one wasn't working its junkyard magic on me. Are the vocals too loud in the mix? Something made me wish it was a bit grimier sounding overall, if that makes sense. I'll revisit this one on another day. Maybe it will be a different reaction.

I don’t know why Maria Carey has all the top Christmas songs because The Birthday Party has a bunch of holiday bangers.

What is this album genre? Because for me, it feels like an extremely weird mix of proto-new wave, hardcore punk, noise rock, heavy metal (or possibly even doom metal) and even some surf rock elements. Uhh... Let's say that it's a very niche taste, and if you like this album, that's completely fine! But it's not for me, although I recognize that musically, it is not that bad. However, I honestly don't see a reason of why would this album be included on this list, aside from having Nick Cave's name on it.

Hm, no thank you

very weird. it sounds like I should like it, but I don't.

OK, I like Nick Cave but I had never heard The Birthday Party previously. I listened a couple times through this album, the first listen was difficult. I'm listening a third time right now and things are improving. The music seems more accessible if not quite inviting. The lyrics where discernable are provocative as expected from Nick Cave. The arrangements are still very difficult as is the screaming vocal style. Some songs will never be anything I can listen to and enjoy. 2.5 stars

6/7/2022 - ALBUM #131 Today's Album: "Junkyard" by The Birthday Party - When I looked at the cover for this album, I thought 2 things. First, I thought, "Ew," and then I thought, "Maybe it'll be sort of subversive and not look like what's advertised." Unfortunately, only the first thought was able to remain in my mind as I sat through 47 minutes of some of the most gross post-punk I have probably ever heard. Now, I really think there is a lot of talent demonstrated in this album. As I am getting more into punk music, I can appreciate a good performance from a detuned instrument and this album is full of that. However, the overall presentation doesn't come across as being sophisticated in any way despite their musical proficiency. I'm not saying every punk rock album needs to be clever or smart to be good, but when the album really just sounds like the deformed flesh monster vehicle on the cover, I just can't bring myself to enjoy 47 minutes of that kind of ear abuse. The production is also kind of terrible as well or maybe it's a poor mixing, but is sounds like every part was recorded in a gigantic tunnel and it really just takes away from anything I could have enjoyed about this project, namely the instrumental performances. Overall, it was a cool take on the punk rock aesthetic, but I just hope I don't get much more of anything like this on the generator from now on. Listen to this one if you're a grubby little goblin Highlights: Release The Bats Score: 4/10 Really musically impressive, but borderline unlistenable.

Three-quarters of an hour of Nick Cave screaming at me. I'm kind of used to it.

A few decent songs but most didn’t interest me.

This was a struggle...

While I like Nick Cave’s output quite a lot through most of his journey, I never warmed to The Birthday Party. The punk, noise rock elements seem mannered and forced and the misogynistic lyrics were always problematic (although more so now). While a lot of great rock is created by bands seemingly on the edge of implosion, this always struck me as they were trying to hard to be in that state. There are elements that are derivative of Joy Division but can’t come close to that bar. Ultimately, it is most interesting to me as a historical note for the Nick Cave journey.

A bit samey throughout, didn't love it.

4/10 this had positive moments and cool energy at time, but damn was this hard to get through. I don't even like nick cave that much when he's being normal, let alone when he's shouting at me like this.

Nowhere near the worst album of all time. 3/10

Hmmm. Is this music? Or just noise? I will say, it wasn't as bad as I expected from being the second lowest album on the global ratings list. However, its also not that good. 2

Something about Cave is unappealing. Not sure why I don't get his schtick but I don't. Interesting to hear this though as I've never consciously looked up any Birthday Party before. Basically, I'm hearing some sloppy garage rock that doesn't really match my mood today. Also, that cover art is repulsive. Maybe I need to return to this album sometime that I feel angry or at least angsty.

Tedious drone

I get why this is here, there's a lot of layers here to unwind, and there's the semblance that the band doesn't really care what you think. Not for me. Maybe just don't have the patience today. Or maybe it's just not very good.

Too scuzzy for me

Challenging listen. Not awful. Not for me.

Perfectly gloomily violent post-Fall rasping from young Nick Cave. Rock out with your Goth out.

An acquired taste

Generally unpleasant

sounds very primitive and i can understand its unique appeal but its not really for me

I thought the first song "Blast Off" was ok. Had a White Zombie feel to it. Album fell off pretty quick after that though. Picked back up with "Several Sins" but didn't much like the rest of it. It was unique though, I'll give it that.

Not for me. 2 stars

First Listen. Good Sound. 2/5 This album will only get better with more listens. 2/5 for now, but I can see it being a 3/5 or 4/5 in the near future.

Wow awful not for me yuck

Really not my cup of tea. Lots of noise, and not the good kind. (Despite usually liking most Nick Cave stuff)

It’s pretty hard going to be honest. The noise tends to grate after A while. It’s interesting to see how Nick Cave started out. It’s interesting but not enjoyable.

Jedes zweite Lied ganz gut!

This band is from the universe of Mad Max and you can't tell me otherwise.

Punk energy, swamp blues, joy Division production in places, but not my taste

This was aggressive. Not sure how I feel about it. Not really my thing.

angry hangover Joy Division

idk how to feel about this one, I kind of like some of Nick Cave's other music but this is just chaotic

Not your best work Nick

One word Wednesday: Nah

Post-punk for me can be pretty hit-or-miss. There's a reason I had been missing this album until now. It just doesn't have it for me.

Moins mon genre, mais intéressant.

The only reason I knew songs were different from the previous one is bc of the like 1 second silence in between.

No thanks. This just didn't work for me at all. I've enjoyed plenty of Nick Cave in my time, but the sound, the vocals...none of this worked for me. Just not my style of music at all.

I'm only on track 2 and it's gonna be a long 45 minutes. I thought I liked Nick Cave, or at least I always understood him to be an important and influential icon of alternative music. Then I joined the 1001 albums and actually started listening to his work. Nothing I've been fed of Nick Cave has been enjoyable. The best I can say for this album is "Better than Murder Ballads".

Terrible tunes. Fantastic cover art.

Such a dogshit album for such a kick-ass album cover.

# Album Name: Junkyard # Artist: The Birthday Party # Rating: 1/5 # Comments: Rubbish # Top Tunes: # Would I listen to it again? no

Hard pass after the first 2 tracks. Hate everything about this one. ⭐

2.5/10

Verschrikkelijk

Just when you thought Nick Cave couldn’t suck any harder…1,5

Junkyard by The Birthday Party is a harrowing, claustrophobic descent into sonic chaos that is as intentionally abrasive as it is challenging to parse. While tracks like "Big Jesus Trash Can" and the title song lean heavily into a muddy, suffocating production aesthetic that can feel genuinely impenetrable upon first listen, the album serves as a masterclass in gothic post-punk distortion and nihilistic energy. It is far from an easy or polished record—often feeling like a sonic assault rather than a collection of songs—but for those who can stomach the jagged, discordant performances and the deliberately lo-fi, swampy atmosphere, it captures a raw, visceral intensity that few bands have ever successfully replicated.

I like the track Several Sins and the other elements of the album that remind me of Joy Division. I also appreciate the opportunity to hear early Nick Cave after discovering how much I love Abattoir Blues/Lyre of Orpheus. But this record is not one I’ll revisit very much, if at all. 1.5

So close to being my first DNF. Complete shit of the highest degree. Bad enough I had to stand on the packed train from Bristol to London - this made my suffering infinitely worse. Literally unlistenable but at least it was consistently shite. At least it wasn't like anything I'd heard before but maybe that's for a good reason. Album art was fun

Whoever made this list has a ridiculous Nick Cave fetish. Even more shite than his solo stuff

Nick Cave's success grew out of this manure. Unlistenable.

This was Drunk and coked up Nick Cave and the Bad Monkeys. This shouldn't even be on the 100001 albums list.

Two crappy albums in a row...what the hell?

I don’t care enough about this album to even comment on it.

Man, I respect him, but I just do not “get” Nick Cave.

I did judge a book (album) by its cover (album art) but I was correct - it sounds like the album cover which is just simply not for me - I feel like if this wasn’t nick cave it would have been lost to the sands of time

According to several reviews folks claim this album is supposed to be borderline ulistenable and unenjoyable, that's the point. Alright...but it still fuggn sucks lmao

Tää levy oli aikamoista kakofoniaa. Sitä ei pelastanut edes Nick Cave. Enemmän kuin kuraa...

What the actual heck? I am leaving the party early and my Mom says we can no longer be friends ...

It's not available

Seriously? What is this supposed to be? Made it to the 9th song and found better things to do. No redeeming qualities and straight to the Junkyard.

Todella surkea levy. Tällä kertaa ei pystynyt kuuntelemaan loppuun. 0,25/5.

⭐ Punk/ experimental rock.

Nick Cave is a talentless hack. I knew this was getting a 1 by the first song. I got about 5 songs in before I was done. This is genuinely one of the worst things I've ever listened to in my life holy fuck. This is probably the worst album art I have seen on 1001 so far and I'm at album #479 LMAO

My partner in this project was surprised this is Nick Cave. I don't know who Nick Cave is so I can't be surprised yet, maybe later. For now I am just appalled.

I could only find the title track. And well…

Skipped this. Unlistenable.

😒 Fuck no

Pre Listen: What the fuck is going on in the album cover. Looks like something I'd see on a wall in the greasiest pizza/burger restaurant in town, before eating the worst food ever. Slightly low expectations from the album cover alone. Notable Tracks: Blast Off - Heart sank progressively deeper every second the track played. Low expectations weren't low enough apparently. This is the kind of music a teenager plays to intentionally piss off their parents, and look back on with embarrassment. She's Hit - Skipped halfway through. This might be it. Dead Joe - Stopped listening to this about 20 seconds in. I've heard enough. The Dim Locater - Came back and listened to this one after taking a break. Quit listening about halfway through. Post Listen: Fastest 1 out of 5 to date. Might be the fastest for this whole project. This shit sounds like elementary schoolers got access to a recording studio. I know the band is doing it intentionally, because the lead singer keeps doing shitty voices and making shitty noises. The audio mixing is shit, the guitar work intentionally dirty and unpolished. It's an intentionally shit album, you'd be hard pressed to convince me otherwise, it's literally called "Junkyard". That's what this sort of punk-rock is, stylistically. Some people enjoy that kind of thing. I call them masochists. Not a great introduction to the esteemed Nick Cave. At least the album cover gives an accurate impression to the shitfest that is this album. 1/5.

Okay man this fucking sucked dude

This album is just a bunch of bullshit in mp3 form. Post-punk combined with industrial rock – the two worst genres of modern music. I knew it was going well when I found myself searching the "Lowest Rated Albums" stats within 20 seconds of starting the first track. And I wasn't disappointed. There's Junkyard by The Birthday Party, sitting at a cool 2.15-star average rating. The eighth-worst on the website. And damn well deserved. She's Hit approaches... something. The closest contact we have to genuinely listenable music. And yet it's still a pretty far cry from sanity. A half-listenable guitar line that indiscriminately increases and decreases its volume, coupled with a knock-off David Byrne bellowing empty lyrics like there's no tomorrow. And completely unlistenable drumming that picks random bars to get very suddenly louder and overdistorted. What's happening? My vision is going grey, as is any feelings of passion for what humanity has to offer. A brutal reminder that She's Hit is the best track on the album – according to listeners, at least. The entirely of Dead Joe sounds like Cookie Monster is getting a little too much pleasure from his cookies. Where's the explicit content warning? At least we have one chord being brutally slammed into the guitar over and over again for three minutes to distract us from Joe. The Dim Locator is actually pretty good if you imagine it sounding different to how it sounds. Take away all of the distortion, hire a better drummer, better guitarist, significantly better singer, and get some decent mixing and production... and there might be vestiges of listenable music here. I wonder if the purpose of this kind of music is purely for the beautiful "art" of people's reactions, rather than the music itself being art. Outsourcing all the effort to your listeners? Eh, why the heck not? It's genius. Several Sins is... okay, I guess. In the grand scheme of things, still absolutely unacceptable. After this point in the album I stopped giving any particular attention to the music. Tuning music out when it's already out of tune... in truth, surprisingly easy. Good thing they put in a second version of Dead Joe. Gotta make sure he's really dead. 1/5 Key tracks: none

The good news is that you don't have to listen to the entire album. If you've listened to the first 15 seconds of a song, then you heard the entire song. The bad news is that you have to listen to the songs at all. I have to chuckle at the fact that these guys are taking themselves seriously and probably high-fived each other like real bros at what they shat out.

I will never be a fan of the hooting and hollering genre of rock music. Very irritating

absolutely not for me. had to stop after 2.5 songs

Absolute garbage

1.5 Been a while since I dished out a 1* so congrats. Absolute wank. Proper "I'm 14 and I'm edgy" energy. Just read the blurb - of course it's Nick Cave

This album really is a Junkyard!

1/5 Definitely an album I had to listen to before I died

There is nothing redeemable about this. It is a disgrace to music. I’m glad Nick Cave’s sound evolved, but it’s a shame our ears need to bleed for this. Awful, awful stuff.

Actual ragebaiting by the book to include this. Such a troll.

Sorry, this is just a pain to listen to.

The worst album on here so far

ehhhh music itself not bad but their voice absolutely ruins it for me

I hate it. I have tried but I cannot stand Nick Cave in any incarnation.

My brief search found no way to listen to this album in Canada & the parts I *could* listen to sucked

lo borraron

The only part I liked was the silence between the songs. Just awful noise, I couldn’t even finish half the songs

Horrible

🎧Oh this is Nick Cave’s first band, must be why I hate it. This sucks.

This album sounds exactly like the cover looks. That’s the only reason is gets a star.

The Good: It’s a birthday party! The Bad: Held at a junkyard… The Ugly: Getting bitten by the dog… Noise, for the sake of noise, is just noise… Experimental, for the sake of experiment, is just posing… Nick Cave get’s too much credit… Shit 1*

I had a messy piece of shit album yesterday and now this today. Stupid.

Früher Nick Cave. Überzeugt mich gar nicht

I had never heard of this band until today, and I'll happily ignore it again for the rest of my life.

Not good in any way

You know when you can tell exactly what an album will be like just by the cover art. Yeah this is just as bad as I thought. I absolutely despise the art and the music is not too far behind. It sounds like it was recorded in a junkyard warehouse which definitely gives it some atmosphere. God I just hate this kind of music. It’s so stress and anxiety inducing. I get some people will like it but god fucking damn it it’s not me. This can riot in the junkyard for all eternity.

painful

I am reasonably confident this was added as a joke.

I don’t even know how this album got recorded. Terrible. Never even made it through three songs before I was completely annoyed

puta que pariu viu

Pure unpleasantness. Did not finish.

Anything with Rat Fink is a red flag. This album sucked.

No thank you.

There's definitely a respectable amount of creativity that went into this, but ultimately it's still just a mess of groaning and noise

Not my party.

1/5 NOT MY STYLE MEDIO ROCK DUROO METAL, lo peor es que no esta en spoty y lo tuve qe escuchar por youtube

Discordant noise. Just could not find a way into it at all. Relieved when it finished.

2 seconds in and it sounds immediately as expected based on the cover.

How was this universally acclaimed? God awful

Nooooope

This sounds like the type of music you make as a joke while jamming with your friends, but they were like, “fuck it, let’s release it.”

Absolutely dire

This is not the first time I have listened to a truly challenging album from this list while wandering in an airport. It kind of fits. I did not enjoy this though. I really don’t *get* nick cave.

They called this post-punk but that’s being too generous. Bad would be a better term. I just don’t like Nick Cave as an artist.

This is no doubt purposefully bad. Off key notes, talk singing. Sort of in the realms of Nick Cave. I think it’s Nick Cave I’m talking about. Whatever That sums up this album too.

This isn’t for me.

Appropriately named for where it belongs

Embarrassing inclusion. I've given some other 1s in this challenge, but this one has earned it.

Didn't enjoy this at all

First album I've actively disliked. It's just noise, and not in the good way. I can see what they're doing here, but it was a little painful and just couldn't wait for it to be over. I'm sure there's an audience for this, but it's the one I am not a part of.

You fuck this right off into space

Historisch? Vielleicht. Hörbar? Eher nicht.

If you like this album, we cannot be friends.

Unlistenable… nothing lined up and the overall tone was awful.

I hated this so much. Just a wall of noise for me.

Shit. Glad he grew up a bit.

Dead Joe so good the made two versions that sound the same. Replay no

I seen this album and thought this is gonna be terrible but no way could it be worse than a nick cave album. I was wrong, this is genuinely the worst album I’ve listened to in my life. It sounds like he’s trying to do his best yoko ono impression. It was so bad I had to look this band up and found out I wasn’t wrong, it doesn’t get worse than nick cave because the fucking band is Nick cave. There is no way in hell that Nick cave isn’t the author behind this book because no one would ever listen to this garbage.

Better then expected

Not for me

DNF. This was terrible. Just noise.

Too screamy and SUPER repetitive, horrible rhythm, was all over the place

Several Sins is a good song. Peaky Blinders theme energy but too inconsistent

What I would imagine a trope of monsters making music out in a junkyard would sound like.

Dead Joe made me want to shoot myself. Weird grunting-singing that is more annoying than anything else. Trash album, I don't enjoy punk as much as I thought I did. 1*

Music as crap as the album cover.

Not my style but hit that "Industrial Complex" well

wtf lol

Yeah nope

Music or just noise?

shit noise

I didn’t like this album. But, I can see why anyone who appreciates punk at all would find this wonderful. This list has given me an appreciation for different genres of music that I never would have to listened to if I didn’t wake up to a new offering every morning.

I have never cared for the music of Nick Cave and I ain’t about to start now.

This album was not available anywhere

Not my thing.

Tried to listen to work. First album on this list I didn't finish for two reasons. First is that there isn't a proper version of this on YouTube Music, and the playlist on YouTube proper is all messed up. Second I did end up listening to the first four or so tracks and decided it just wasn't worth the effort to track down a proper stream because I just wasn't picking up what these guys were putting down. Never really got Nick Cave and this record certainly isn't changing my mind. Not for me.

Quite possibly the worst thing I've ever listened to.

Dnf. Might return to listen to the rest but I was not in the mood to finish

This is unlistenable. You strove to make a piece of trash. Congratulations, you did. No one should bother with this junk. Doing the bare minimum is not an artistic statement, it is just laziness. Just pure unimaginative bullshit. This doesn't sounds like a collapsed society in a post apocalyptic world, it sounds like a bunch musicians doing a sloppy job of fucking around. Adding injury to insult, you have wade through the typical terrible Nick Cave singing and cliched lyrics. Anyone notice how long this dude has had an unnatural obsession with murder ballads? We get it, you saw MAD MAX and it made you spew in your shorts. And you couldn't wait to see THE ROAD WARRIOR when it would come out three weeks after the release of this turd. Even the album cover makes it clear that this album is a complete waste of time. Not remotely an essential album for this list and definitely not one of the most important albums from the 1980s. Again, the list is trying retcon history. The 80s did not sound this bad, and this band was not important to anyone.

This was terrible.

I really hope no one ever asks me to describe what this album sounds, because I have no idea what the heck I just listened to.

Does anyone have a hammer that I could use to pound my balls flat? Because I would rather do that than listen to this fucking abortion. I'm now convinced that some of the albums on this list were included, not because of how great they are, but because of how incomprehensibly awful they are. Like those commercials with the racoons eating the garbage, "oh, this is awful! Here, try it!". Possibly the worst thing I've ever listened to. 1

Se pudesse dava 0

I am at a loss for words, this is horrible but album cover is pretty fire

What in thr junk rat fugalatoogan

absolutely not

Sinnloses Gebrülle! Weg damit!

i actually hated this

This is the soundtrack to the worst birthday party ever.

I’m not going to make it thru. I’m going to use this album to express how frustrating it is to have a list that comprises albums that are objectively shit just cuz someone in it went on to do other things that are, if not great, at least influential. These are not albums that I need to hear before I die.

The redeeming quality of this album was imagining how Nick Cave and future members of his backing bands were attempting to rebel against conventional musicality of the early 80s. Because all of these songs felt like sonic attacks on the listener. I struggled valiantly to get through each song, usually failing.

Too much anger - too much screaming. 1,5

She's hit - 1 Dead joe - 3 The dim locator - 2 Hamlet (pow, pow, pow) - 2 Several sins - 3 Big-jesus-trash-can - 1 Kiss me black - 1 6" gold blade - 1 Kewpie doll - 2 Junkyard - 1

This album had a strong Dad Rock aesthetic, just a very thick sound and an unrelenting guitar. It's a very loud and in-your-face style that I thought was too harsh. Nick Cave's vocals (who I didn't know was the frontman) had some strong moments, but were too harsh. It added to the overall feeling of a strained execution that this record had. That's not to see that it was completely devoid of nuance, such as across the song She's Hit, or on some of the horns and drumming on other songs, but it felt like the positive moments on the record were just that: moments. Once you had enough time to start to follow a compelling sequence, it would lead back into a place of stagnation and forceful tones. Junkyard is an album that seemed more concerned with the appearance of being powerful rather than creating a sound that is powerful on its own merits. Faves: n/a

what is this?

I don't think this is the worst album I've ever heard, but it's pretty close. In theory, I can appreciate what they're trying to do with this album. In actuality, It's hard to appreciate anything about this album. I guess the instrumental is okay at times? One star. (Favorite track: Several Sins.)

This project has skewed heavily into Australian punk/post-punk for me lately. I had no idea Nick Cave was previously in a band. I saw him on Lollapalooza about 30 years ago and he has never really done much for me. I find him an interesting personality but never really got into his music. This album did not change that. The Ed Roth cover (and maybe the music) would have appealed to me when I was about 12 and buying things like this in the import section at Camelot Records. This gets 1.5 stars. It got annoying about halfway through.

This made me question the this whole project of the top 1001 albums. This was really hard to listen to.

Yeah no

Casting aside musical conventions is the easy part. The hard part is replacing them with something engaging, moving; something worth listening to. When you forego the hard part and, for example, make shitty music just for the shock value, then, over time, the shock value wears off, and your legacy is just a bunch of shitty music.

They should’ve rolled a giant stone over the entrance of the dank cave in which it was recorded, and never mentioned it again

Appropriate name for filing location

Artificial post-punk but too much noise for me.

Three fucking awful tracks in a row to start with left me with no option but to skip to each remaining track in turn and listen to the opening few seconds. They were all, consistently and equally, as fucking awful as the first 3 tracks. I quickly turned it off at that point.
