Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Some night songs and I dig the lower fi sound quality.

Good allround but lacks some outstanding songs.

oke leuk maar niets spectaculair

I don't know... I didn't really feel that much during the first playthrough to be honest. Definitely not bad, but nothing that stuck with me either except maybe Momma Miss America, which was a really cool song, but also completely different from the rest of the album. Maybe I just need to listen to it again, not sure.

I've never really listened much to McCartney's solo career so this was an interesting one. I really enjoyed the silliness and the lo-fi unpolished vibe. For many other artists I think this type of album would've been a snooze but McCartney manages to keep it interesting. And just as this album starts to wander off in to demo-tape territory, comes "Maybe I'm amazed" which is such a treat and well produced to boot to cap off the album.

I've never really given Paul's solo work a good listen, so this feels like new insight into his personality - some real goofiness unleashed. Some seemingly unfinished songs, some bizarre songs, almost joke songs. And then suddenly, like a bolt of lightning, there's "Maybe I'm Amazed" to blow you away. Then it's back to finger percussion on a suitcase or whatever is happening in the final track.

All of the individual output of the Beatles illustrates to me why they were as a group stronger than any individual member. Sometimes that tension of ideas can produce some interesting things that they'd never come up with on their own. There are interesting ideas overall, but I find it all pretty disappointing in comparison to the highs of the Beatles. McCartney's first solo-album: It's fine, but a bit straightforward. It feels like a regression.

Not as good as The Beatles

its okay nothibg special really

Wat rustige nummers en een enkele Beatles kloon, want dat stond nog niet genoeg in de lijst.... En af en toe een instrumentaal nummer. Dat laatste moet je waarderen van een Beatle. 2.5 ster.

I like the whole idea behind this album as well as most of the songs.

One masterpiece Macca song.

I have to confess that I have never heard this record in full. I am a huge fan of Sir Paul, and consider him to be my favorite Beatle - after many years of posing as a John guy. For obvious reasons, he's the most prolific of them all. This is a decent record overall.

Leuk plaatje!

Not a big Lennon fan but now I think that he had a better career than McCartney, despite the pompousness of some of his songs. While Lennon successfully conquered the area of ballad, McCartney, at least in this album, seem to get lost in the area of folk (?) or something. Two minute songs are cool and all, but such dullness and aimlessness made them sound like outtakes. It's surprisingly mid, overall. The instrumental tracks are the most interesting ones imo. Those were the parts where I felt like he's actually forming an artistic statement.

If it wasn’t for the Beatles breakup and his name recognition at the time, no way this album makes the list. Nothing exceptional or groundbreaking with this work that nobody else was already doing. With Nick Drake, Leonard Cohen and Paul Simon at that time, I can’t see the must hear elements of this album. A good album, but purely included based on his name.

Not his best work. Not even his best solo work. Strange inclusion. Best track: Maybe I'm Amazed

A rush job produced to let the world think it was Paul's idea to break up the greatest rock band in history. You get the feeling Sir Paul spent more time on that bizarre self-interview he included with the album than he did on any of the songs. Maybe I'm Amazed is the one colossal banger here, but it's surpassed by the more lauded and known live version released years later. I'd argue the half assed rush job cost Paul's reputation for decades, as this fails in comparison by the solo efforts by John and George. There's magic within some of these tunes, like the aforementioned Maybe I'm Amazed. Paul just needed a little more time in the kitchen. Or another John Lennon to bounce a few ideas with while cooking.

Maybe I'm Amazed there was only one true standout on this otherwise average album. Would give 2.5 if possible.

3.5 Between songs like Hey Jude, Blackbird, and his subsequent work with Wings, I’ve always considered Paul the best Beatle by a landslide, but the criticism I read surrounding this album reminded me that this is also the guy that gave us Wonderful Christmastime and Why Don’t We Do It in the Road? But come on, every great artist misses the mark once or twice in their career, and while Paul is certainly no exception, this album is not one of those times. Lazy and unfinished? By no means is it as polished as any of his work prior, but for me that’s the charm of it - it’s simple and earnest while still retaining elements of catchy songwriting, reminding me of why the guy is a musical icon in the first place. I’m not going to pretend anything here is mind-blowing by any means, but I can honestly say I had a really pleasant time listening throughout. Funny enough, the most popular track here, Maybe I’m Amazed, was actually my least favorite - it’s the cheesiest, poppiest track by far, and probably the closest thing to a Beatles song anywhere on the record. The drum-focused closing track Kreen-Akrore was also not a high point by any means, but with it all said and done, looking back, I can confidently say I had a good time - I would listen to this again over a Beatles album any day. Between this and Band and the Run, Paul has really surprised me with his post-Beatles work, and I’m starting to think that maybe the other guys (or at least John) were holding him back. Just like Band on the Run, I’m gonna score 3.5, but this could easily be a 4 for me on a good day. While maybe not a direct influence on any artists in particular, this feels like a musical milestone hinting towards the style of indie, lo-fi song production that was to come and that we still hear on platforms like Bandcamp today, reminding us that what makes a song great is not necessarily its quality of production, but a strong core idea paired with an impassioned performer. It’s also entirely possible that I just have bad taste in music.

It’s ok. With “maybe I’m amazed” tucked in as the 84th song of the album

A pleasant but strangely inconsequential journey into McCartneydom. There are at least two albums in his catalogue that are nearing five star status - this isn't one of them. Nonetheless, nothing objectionable here. I like it well enough.

Yeah, this is kind of surprisingly low-key isn't it? Not at all what I was expecting. While nothing quite stood out in memory aside from "Maybe I'm Amazed," I have the suspicion that this is one of those albums that could reveal itself to be really rewarding once you've listened to it three or four times. Or not! Never can tell and who the hell does this McCartney bloke think he is anyway?

This feels like a collection of demos. It seems very simple, direct and, in places, unfinished. No doubt this was an artistic choice by McCartney. I liked it. It's interesting to have an insight interesting the workings of one of the all time great song writers. Rating: 3.5/5 Playlist track: Maybe I'm Amazed Date listened: 27/05/23

nix besonderes

Suspect this is included more because of who they are, rather than the music

Better than I thought it was going to be!

I absolutely LOVE McCartney. He is possibly my favorite musician of all time. But I'm shocked to see this album make the list. It is far from his best output. In fact, this album has often felt like a collection of outtakes to me. There are some gems here to be sure -- "Maybe I'm Amazed" is one of his best tracks, "Every Night" is lovely, and it's fun to see old Beatles castoffs like "Junk" and "Teddy Boy" finally released. But as a whole, the album just doesn't come together all that well.

I was going to completely dismiss this as unformed drivel on first listen, with the exception of Maybe I'm Amazed, which we all know and accept for the masterpiece that it is. But on second listen I started to enjoy it a bit more. Third listen was pleasant too. I do still think there are a lot of raw, unformed ideas here that haven't been fully realized. The odd Elvis like affectation of the phrase "mama" as a term of endearment is still a bizarre choice to me. It's been peppered into a few tracks and I have to wonder what that's all about. Is he emulating Elvis? Mocking him? I'm not quite sure. But it's not a colour that suits McCartney. It is a listenable and enjoyable album. But is it impactful? No.

The real genius level of Paul McCartney is on display in the fact that Maybe I'm Amazed almost carries this whole album - but not quite. None of the rest of it really stuck for me (though none of itnis bad), and it seems like an odd pick for this already over-represented artist.

Honnêtement un peu déçu, j'ai trouvé la majorité de l'album très fade, manquait de mordant, les compositions étaient un peu ininspirées. On est loin de Band on the Run. Le seul highlight de l'album est Maybe I'm Amazed. 5/10

His first album post-Beatles could not be more unlike the Beatles if he tried. As a Beatles fan - and a McCartney fan I was looking forward to hearing this album, since I really never heard it before. I was more into the later McCartney stuff. Good? Yes, Different? Definitely. I can see this being a great album, after I get used to it but for now, on this first listen, I'll leave it a 3/5.

Maybe I’m amazed at how some of these songs are so good and some as so pished

You'd think if McCartney stretched his wings for the first time, he'd come up with something unique and genuinely interesting. But nope. This is honestly as bland as porridge.

This was awful. I felt it was meandering and directionless. Nothing stood out. Add to the list of substandard Beatle solo albums. Absolutely no need for it to be on this list.

Because he’s Paul I’ll give him two stars. I didn’t enjoy the album.

When you're a natural you can churn out material like this pretty effortlessly, at least that's the feeling of this - lo fi.production, like a reel of demos, a grab bag of 65% worked out ideas. It's laid back and shaggy, sprawling, with lots of room in the recordings and an engaging lack of intensity that makes it quite intimate. Soft rock with lots of bluesy jamming, but he's literally just playing with himself. Surely he could've hired a better guitar player? He's fine but really conventional.

First Listen: The last half of Glasses was cool but underdeveloped. Junk was a really nice song. Teddy is another proper song, but I don't think it's that great of a song! JUNK AGAIN WE BACK BABY! Maybe I'm Amazed is great. We have 2 fully developed songs! OVERALL: I like the Beatles! I like Paul McCartney! I'm not sure if it's necessary to listen to Paul's post breakup voice memos. There's some really nice songs, like Junk, Singalong Junk, and Junk (Taylor's Version). A lot of the proper songs on this feel sort of empty. I don't think Paul was at the point in his solo career that he had the ability to command presence without The Beatles. There's a severe lack of background vocals on these as well. Reading some of the reviews for this album, some of you need to get off dick. I respect the experiments, but I don't think this is required listening at all. 4.5/10 T3: Junk, Maybe I'm Amazed, Singalong Junk

Rock celebrities noodling aimlessly... three disk albums for the musician's pet passions... there seems to have been a certain amount of celebratory looseness in some of the Beatles' work at this time, leading us now 56 years from the context of 1970 to roll our eyes at least a bit. The way the celebrity British rockers interpreted the blues kept changing. Here we get a taste of Clapton from that era. I've been married 15 years now, and I anticipate remaining in that happy condition through the rest of our lives. Here Mr. McCartney has created small, homey songs about the relaxed, drawing-room and farmland happiness of a committed relationship. But generally--this is a nope for me.

It’s not too good, the blues influence feels wrong. The praise of having the best wife and Family in the world annoys me. Most important, the Songs are boring and don’t „amaze me“! :D Fav: Maybe I‘m amazed

One or two belters but mostly too whimsy and half baked

Paul McCartney's solo debut is a bit scant and scattershot. Several tracks seem like unfinished ideas. It also sounds very home-made, so much so that I've seen this being described as the first Bedroom Pop album ever made. That doesn't make it better, though, that description is mostly just cope. Key tracks: Maybe I'm Amazed

If this album wasn't by Paul McCartney, then it wouldn't be on here. 2.

Okay, a McCartney album. I only knew the cover before, and it's really beautiful. It has a certain Asian feel to it, so I probably would have associated it more with John Lennon. Of the songs, I only knew "The Lovely Linda" and found it unremarkable, banal. I particularly liked "Maybe I'm Amazed," a truly typical McCartney song. I also really like the instrumental track "Singalong Junk." But overall, I find the album rather bland. I don't think it's unfinished, since Paul released it like this. Do I find it special or outstanding? Absolutely not. Two, maybe two and a half stars, unfortunately, no more.

I’m sorry to say I’ve never been terribly interested in Paul McCartney. He rubs me the wrong way. Whatever. I wasn’t wildly invested and then I’m smacked in the face with Maybe I’m Amazed so that was fun! Fucking hell. So good. (HA upon further examination, I wonder if I internalized a narrative that he broke up the Beatles while in high school and forgot… which, who cares, it’s not like I was ever a giant Beatles fan? Perhaps I was after Across the Universe (lol) and because Molly was (lolol)) Also. Reading about the influence of this album on lo-fi (which, I am only now learning is low fidelity)

John Lennon thought it was rubbish, George Harrison was disappointed by it, and the critics hated it back then. Today’s critics, however, love it because its fragmented style anticipates the lo-fi bedroom productions of indie music. And what about me? I’ve actually only just listened to the album properly for the first time. Not much has stuck with me. Some parts sound like demos from The White Album or Abbey Road; other parts sound unpolished. But ‘Maybe I’m Amazed’ is brilliant. McCartney moved away from the perfectly produced Beatles albums, and so did the other three. They were to produce their albums far less elaborately and innovatively than the Beatles did with George Martin, and that’s fine. I often find this album lacks compositional brilliance. However, Paul McCartney went on to compose hits as a solo artist for decades to come. Overall, this is more of a 'pass' certificate.

Another Beatles solo project. It's not the same. Fave track: Maybe I'm Amazed

None of these songs captured my attention at all. Sorry paul you're still my favourite Beatle

they should've fixed their marriage instead

I really loved the Beatles. They were 13-year old me's favorite group. So why do I dislike their solo work, Plastic Ono excepted? There's one good song on this album, and it's his best post-Bestles, so it's not a 1-star review.

Outside of the last track..this album has no wings. Thoughts of Lennon calling it Grandma music. There are better albums of his.

It’s undeniable that Paul McCartney is musically talented and can play the guitar better than most, but I feel like this album was added to this 1001 project simply because he IS Paul McCartney. I was not impressed with this selection at all, in fact I stopped just short of making fun of a couple of songs while listening. Maybe I’m Amazed was the sole standout on this album and the rest was just average IMO.

McCartNo.

Paul McCartney is responsible for a lot of great music. Maybe I'm Amazed is a great song. The rest of this album is unnecessary. Out of respect for Sir Paul McCartney I will leave it at that.

It sounded a bit twee from where I was standing.

It’s a whole lot of McCartney.

Felt like a lot of unfinished sketches except for Maybe I'm Amazed

Forgettable, but nice.

2.5 - Meh

Pretty boring

Played Maybe I'm Amazed backwards but alas, no recipe for a 'really ripping lentil soup', so that was a lie. Absolute standout track. The rest... I mean, the post Beatles disappointment must have been HUGE.

it's fine. my score is probably more reflective of my feelings towards the beatles generally.

A few good songs but very unequal in the end

is this meant to sound like a collection of unfinished/scrapped works? that's kind of how it comes across to me

Haf-baked, but with moments of class and taste. Will I listen to this album again, no, nor do I remember many of the songs. But what I did remember was interesting, if unfinished.

Most of the songs don’t really go anywhere.

A couple moments of brilliance, mostly moments of the opposite

Unsurprisingly a bit boring. Really liked "Oo You" though

Maybe I'm amazed, but maybe it's just pretty mid. They mostly just feel like all the songs he had started writing before the breakup, and he wanted to rush and get them out while he was relevant. Didn't bother actually polishing them all, and it suffers for it. Obviously Maybe I'm Amazed is amazing.

Apart from Maybe I'm Amazed the album comes across as a bunch of demos, perhaps just a product of the technically available at the time. On Kreen-Akrore maybe there is something in the joke that Ringo wasn't the best drummer in The Beatles.

easy listening but unremarkable for me

dad rock. A rich famous musician making music for himself which happens to get released.

llevo una racha de poner a los álbumnes 2 pero ninguno me llama la atención

Oof. Did Sir Paul have to make one more record for a contract? Of perhaps he needed money to pay for a grandchild’s education. This is not inspired

I’m not sure I’ve heard any songs from the first Paul McCartney solo album. I didn’t get into much of the Beatles’ solo material. I just assumed that whatever they did on their own could never equal what they did as a group. For the most part, I think that’s true, though I really loved George Harrison’s All Things Must Pass. I still think it’s the best album of all the members’ solo work that I've heard. McCartney recorded this album in secrecy, it seems. He then decided to release it before the group released Let It Be. John Lennon had essentially quit the Beatles, though without the world knowing, and McCartney was depressed, probably angry, and decided to put this album out. He recorded a lot of it at his home on a four-track. When the press release came out about McCartney’s solo album, that was the official end of the Beatles, and he got the blame for a while. Somehow, the blame ended up on Yoko Ono’s head, but I’m not sure why. Well, probably because she was a female foreigner. I guess Lennon couldn’t think for himself? Anyway, I think now history shows that the band members were unhappy at the time it all ended. I think there was quite a bit of burnout and ego involved. Most probably wanted to see what it was like as a solo act. Anyway, McCartney came out and did not set the world on fire. It had none of the bells and whistles the last few Beatles albums had. In fact, it just sounded like McCartney recorded it all by himself in his home on a four-track, which is what he did. Track one is The Lovely Linda, and it’s around a minute long. It sounds like the beginning of a song, or more like the end of a song, with no beginning or middle. Track 2 is That Would Be Something and I think I’ve heard this. It’s funny to hear just a guitar, bass, drums, and vocals. No sweeping orchestral pieces or weird, backward-sounding guitars. Just a simple song. Again, this song sounds like McCartney had an idea for a song, but didn’t really flesh it all out. It’s almost a sketch or demo of something he’d take to the band to build on. It gives me a southern rock vibe. Track 3, Valentine Day, is a bit dirtier and grimier than what we’ve heard so far. It’s also just an instrumental. Very cool song, though, again, it sounds like McCartney had a good idea for a song, but never finished it. This album is weird. Track 4, Every Night, is the first “real” song on the album. It’s got lyrics, a bit more musicianship, with guitars. McCartney was the king of silly little love songs, wasn’t he? Track 5 is Hot as Sun/Glasses, and it starts off with a bit of a Southwestern flair. Seems to be an instrumental for the most part. Another song that sounds like it was just a piece of a song. And Glasses appears to be another piece of a song added on. It actually sounds like the end of another song just stitched to the end of an incomplete song. This album is very weird. It has 13 songs and is just 34 minutes long. I can see why critics didn’t think much of this when it came out. Track 6 is Junk, and I think that would kind of describe this album so far, well, maybe not that harshly, but it seems, compared to the output of the Beatles, this would be junk. However, the song Junk is really good. The best on the album, maybe. It at least feels sketched out a bit more than the rest, though it’s under two minutes. Maybe McCartney was going for the whole “leave then wanting more” deal. Track 7 is Man We Was Lonely and its the first time I think I’m hearing Linda McCartney singing background vocals. But this song feels like one of the actual songs he had fully written. It’s almost 3 minutes long. Track 8, Oo You, is a nice bluesy song about a woman. That riff is the truth. I could see a stoner metal band taking this and doing good things with it. McCartney is singing it like Howlin’ Wolf. This is my favorite song on the album. I can also hear the Queens of the Stone Age in this song. And just like that, it’s over. Track 9 is Momma Miss America, and I don’t care for the drum sound. It's another instrumental. I don’t understand why McCartney wanted this out as his first solo album. Maybe to be the first member to get solo work out? Maybe he wanted to release something so unlike the Beatles to truly break away from his past? Again, about halfway through the song, it’s like he stops and starts a whole new song. Track 10 is Teddy Boy, and this sounds like a Beatles song. McCartney has doubled his vocals, and the bass line sounds like a Beatles bass line. The lyrics tell a story with, I’m sure, more meaning than is on the surface. Track 11 is another song with junk in the title, as it's named Singalong Junk. I do love the quietness to it. I hear maybe the first notes from a symphony, though I guess it could be a synthesizer. Just a very pretty little song. Sounds like a sad song, or at least that’s what I’m feeling. Oh snap! Track 12 is Maybe I’m Aamzed. I’ve definitely heard that. What a diamond in a bucket of coal. This song is a Beatles-sounding song. I bet when the others heard this, they thought, “Why didn’t he pull this out for us?” Nah, they all probably thought they could write a better song. This song was fully fleshed out, and you can hear the emotion in McCartney’s voice when he sings it. This song may be the only reason to include this album in the 1,001 Albums list. The last song is called Kreen-Akore, and I don’t know why. Right now, the lyrics appear to be McCartney making monkey sounds. This seems to be a showcase for McCartney’s drum skills, as it sounds like the song is a drum solo. Nope, here are some Ahhhs and more instruments coming in. On an album full of confusing songs, this may have been the most confusing. I’m not a McCartney hater, but this album made it seem as if he had never gotten with the Beatles, we would have never heard his name. YouTube Music randomly plays George Harrison’s What Is Life after the McCartney album is over, and that song is better than 12 of the 13 songs on this album. Maybe I’m Amazed is a great song, an all-timer, but the album leaves me scratching my head. It seems that when it came out, critics were underwhelmed and complained about the songs seeming unfinished. I hate to align with critics, but I concur. This is an album you can skip, but listen to Maybe I’m Amazed and put it in your rotation.

I don't care about Sir Paul McCartney. It has some interesting guitar and bass sections, but mostly it isnt my thing. Better than the beatles though.

Damn, this was #500 for me and how disappointing that was.. it’s like he wrote, Maybe I’m Amazed and someone asked him if he happened to have 10 two minute long tracks of bullshit.

Interesting bunch of ideas in the main, I think the world album evokes something I don't think is expressed. Other than Maybe I'm Amazed it feels like things I'd expect on an EP.

Rushed release. Kind of interesting but also a little disappointing.

There is signs of what he was doing on the Beatles but feels a little lost and directionless in the end quite sure what it's doing on the list.

#860. One decent single and a bunch of nonsense. 2/5: meh

I suspect that if my sex drive flatlined, my investment portfolio was just a bit more diversified, and I garaged a new Corvette I strictly drive 10 mph below the speed limit on weekends, I would love this. Until that happens, I'll turn to the Beatles... and a t-bone.

Maybe I'm a mediocre album. I can see why people were disappointed. Some potential in some of these tracks, but other than Maybe I'm Amazed, none really come close to fulfilling it or touching his best work. Or even his solid work. 2 Stars.

Not a lot stood out to me here at all. Just felt rather bland. It had the odd moment where there might have been a good riff here or there but that's about it really. I would have thought an early McCartney album would be better as it's just after The Beatles split by the looks of things.

alright

More inoffensive than the other Beatles solo work. Nothing too special though.

4.5/10 Disappointing. I dont usually mind shorter albums because they are often more focused, but then youre not supposed to fill them with intermezzos and unfinished ideas. Here its clear that, very surprisingly, McCartney just didnt have enough material for an album. Bold choice to release it anyway, since presumably after the Beatles youd want to come out of the gate swinging. There just isn't much here, which left me feeling empty.

Kinda boring, didn't do anything for me but at keast it was over in the time it took to have breakfast.

Not my style I fell asleep listening to it

Interesting album, not why I was expecting. I can see why maybe I’m amazed is the only song I knew. I’m not typically one for instrumental tracks but it kind of worked here. And the last track is definitely something.

53. ok

Warm, homemade sketches built from casually strummed acoustic guitars, rough electric doodles, simple drum patterns, and gently unpolished vocals folded straight into the mix move this rock album like paging through a private notebook left on the kitchen table. Intimate and sincere in its rough charm, yet so informal and unfinished that it often feels more like process than statement.

Too monotone

It seems like unfinished songs mostly. Fun stuff but not his best

Not a fan of the instrumentals and his style of singing. Again not something I would choose to listen to but wouldn’t mind if it playing. Maybe I’m amazed is my favourite song of the album but still not a song I actually like. 3.5/10

It’s like if you took the Beatles and somehow made them worse by having only a quarter of them

Repetitive

I had to seperate McCartney from The Beatles to think objectively here. Most of the album was just dull. Maybe I'm Amazed came on and I thought, "Okay, Paul, showing me I've misjudged you all these years. There's something here." And then he followed it with a song where he pants heavy like a Dad carrying the groceries in. 1 star for having a legacy even though I'm not a fan. 1 star for Maybe I'm Amazed surprising me. No 3 stars for heavy panting soulless music.

Heard it before. Listen, I do like Paul but listening to this album makes me understand why The Beatles broke up. A very weak debut solo album, it's just Paul doing his weird things. He has better albums in his discography 2/5

Oooof, 1 really good and 2 decent songs. Another on this list of seeing things brighter with revisionist glasses. This was panned when it came out and is as 2.25 as can be today as well.

Nice guitar work but nothing stood out.

Sounds more like a collection of musical ideas than an album. I like Paul, but this is a good example of why you need a producer who's able to say: "No, we're not doing it like that."

this is not very good

This album sounds like a collection of demos or B-sides or whatever. It starts pretty bad, but it gets better. And worse again. And better again. Very inconsistent. It should not have gotten past QC. Favorite song: Junk

Maybe I‘m Amazed .. was McCartney nebst Singalong Junk so produziert hat. Trotzdem: nicht meins, tönt wie Beatles. 2

Nicht so schlimm wie Beatles

i am not impressed. he made better albums later

Трябваше да си останеш в Бийтълс

I probably wouldn't have known this album was "homemade" if that wasn't the only thing that people talked about. I can understand why that's all people have to say though, there's not really anything special or standout here, at least to me. Was a nice background as I did some chores.

it’s finee

One of the greatest songwriters of the 20th century, with a catalogue of brilliant recordings as long as your arm. So it’s a complete mystery to me why anyone would spend time listening to him noodling around on a bunch of half-baked ideas. Maybe I’m Amazed is great but nowhere near worth the journey it takes to get there.

What a fuckin' snooze.

There was always going to be enjoyable moments on this album - It's a Paul McCartney album from 1970. But there was always going to be some serious nonsense also - for the same reason. Ultimately, what's disappointing about it is how forgettable it all is.

It's just kind of alright. I was expecting something amazing when I saw the album of the day was Paul McCartney but it's kind of a boring album with the exception of maybe four songs. Most of the songs were forgettable with generic music and beats. Obviously 'Maybe I'm Amazed' is a good song with a catchy tune but that is the high point. Probably won't listen to this one again.

This is the album that Paul just had to quit the Beatles for. “I’ve been aching to show the world the true Paul - a half-assed collection of barely-there songs, twee ramblings and a love letter to my wife that lasts 45 seconds. This one’s for you, Linda!” Linda had no comment at press time.

Feel like several half cooked songs

He can do better.

It's окэй .

I know you're Paul McCartney and you've just left the Beatles and all that but you need to go back to the studio and finish this collection of half baked ideas properly before it's fit to be released kthnxbye

Sounds like an unfinished Beatles album.

Feels a bit unfinished for a member of the Beatles first solo album. You would expect more. I guess that's part of the appeal but it's not for me

The blues guitar riffs were the highlight of this album, as lyrically it was awful.

Boring…

Solid, but nothing too noteworthy to me

Lo-Fi Beatles. Far away from being a musical milestone.

Another generic sounding 60s album but from a legendary artist and technically 1970.... My girlfriend who loves The Beatles and 60s soft music even agreed this one didnt need to make the cut. Not much for me here. Super simple writing with lackluster instrumentals. Cover art is probably the only thing I expect to last with me.

It’s ok.

Yeah I don’t know about this one. It’s not bad and it does have its charm, but it doesn’t really feel like a fully realized effort. Maybe I’m Amazed is great though

Thank God this album is so short, because it has very little else going for it. It sounds a bit childish a lot of the time, as if this is a bunch of pals just messing around - as opposed to, you know, an *actual* Beatle. Maybe that’s why “Maybe I’m Amazed” is in a league of its own on this album - it stands out in a pile of absolute guff anyway, but is a genuinely lovely song that is, both musically and lyrically, superior to everything else that can be found here.

10/21/25. Not really sure what I was expecting but thought it was just okay, especially compared to the other solo albums by ex-Beatles. Man We Was Lonely is a standout track.

Worst beatle

This sounds like the 50th anniversary bonus deluxe box set version of an actual album. Maybe I'm Amazed is great though.

quite bad!

One real song across the first five tracks. Middling until Maybe I'm Amazed and it's like "oh yeah, this dude's one of the greatest pop songwriters ever!" Then the big finish of drum noodling/zen chanting/heavy breathing.

Very scattered

Not a fan of the sound.

Normally I would reserve "two stars" for albums I really dislike. But whether I like it or not, McCartney just isn't much of a record. These are sketches Paul made at his home studio. And that's fine, if this was released 30 years after the fact as a bonus disc. But how can you compare this to the heavy hitters? Maybe I'm being unkind to Paul here but - it feels like he made a bunch of home recordings, the Beatles were breaking up, he wanted to put out a solo record sooner rather than later, so he threw those tracks on an album and called it a day, knowing his fans would buy an album of him reading the phone book. So given all that- TWO STARS

Eh nothing memorable besides maybe I’m amazed. Love Paul but this album is not great

I don't get the hype but who am I to judge? Skilled musician but overall boring work. Perhaps unpopular opinion - Lennon was a better songwriter (awful person I know).

Bass player: great job! Singer/Guitar: Good job too Drummer: 😶 sound engineer: you were happy with the first take!? Writer: you put every idea on the album? Overall: some members of this band need to get replaced

One fairly decent copy of a blues song. One pitiful ripoff of the far superior Kinks. The rest is saccharine syrupy sludge.

Best Song: Maybe I'm Amazed. This song is so obviously better than all the others here. McCartney actually brings some vocal energy and passion to his delivery. Worst Song: Kreen-Akore. What a brilliant way to kill all the energy of the previous track. Overall: One of the least cohesive albums I've heard on this list. Every track feels entirely unrelated to the others, making each song transition a jarring experience. Beyond that, none of the tracks are individually very interesting.

Booooooooooring

No, this is not for me. The songs are simple boring singalongs and the song "Singalong Junk" describes rather well what the album is about. But still for me a 2, the 1 I only give to "terrible" albums.

A little disappointing by McCartney’s standards. 2.5 stars

Sounds so painfully like just a collection of demos, but maybe I’m just amazed that Paul would release such raw and rushed work.

Für meinen Geschmack etwas zu experimentell.

Reading about this album on wikipedia was more interesting than what was going on musically here. Maybe I’m amazed was the only highlight here.

Not the best, not even good

I haven't heard this album before. Only Maybe I'm Amazed, the most known song here. It is hard to avoid the comparison with Beatles's Let it be, released in parallel. The quality of this one is much lower.

Songs 1-5 cater to an eclectic type of listener, gives me 70’s Woodstock vibes (of which I need to grow my pallet) maybe this was an introduction? 6/7- Junk and Man We Was Lonely - more my taste in what I’ve come to know and understand from McCartney. I would’ve been happy to skip the rest and the crescendo song Kreen-Akore was laughable. 2/5

This is the second "solo" McCartney album I have gotten, after the Wings Band on the Run album. Like that one, I am very disappointed with this. Having quickly perused the backstory for this record, I have a theory. Paul knew John was leaving the Beatles, the Beatles were breaking up, and he wanted to announce that he was going solo before that all became public. That's the only reason I can see for insisting this come out before the Let It Be album. It also makes sense when you listen to this record, which clearly has limited effort put into it. It obviously was rushed by an artist who was lost at the time. The Lovely Linda has potential, but it was more of a concept than an actual song. A strange way to start, effectively announcing "hey world, I'm on my own . . . but I only have half flushed out ideas." I think That Would Be Something sounds cool. It's a borderline Led Zeppelinesque type of song. However, if you measure that against LZ, it pales considerably in comparison mainly because the lyrics are limited and repetitive. It does, however, hurdle the low bar that was the first track. Of course, we are right back down in the valley with Valentine's Day. A short instrumental that serves no purpose. Fortunately, the yo-yo bounces back up slightly with Every Night, a relatively tame song which sounds alright and has some decent guitar work. And then down again with Hot As Sun / Glasses . . . a 35-minute album with this many instrumentals? I thought McCartney was an incredible songwriter? We are 5 songs in, but we have yet to truly hit a complete song. Junk was pretty much that. 6 songs in now. Man We Was Lonely must be a metaphor where the "Man" = other lyrics, as of the 30 lines in the song, 12 have "we was lonely" in them. Oo You I kind of dug, mainly because I think Paul FINALLY gets into a song. The energy is much better on this tune, making it one of the highlights of the album. Yet another instrumental with Momma Miss America. This one is a bit better because it the tune comes together pretty well in a borderline psychedelic type of vibe. Teddy Boy felt more like a complete song, though I found it kind of boring. And then a 4th instrumental with the poorly named Singalong Junk. Thankfully, we finally get to the highlight of this album with Maybe I'm Amazed. This is an excellent song that rightfully has a strong place in the annals of classic rock. Unfortunately, I wasn't amazed by anything that preceded this track on this record. Lastly, like the start of this album, Paul takes a strange approach to closing this album with Kreen-Akrore. Yeah the drums are ok, and the limited guitar is decent, but what was the point? An aimless track that just doesn't do anything but put a stamp on an underwhelming effort. Also, 5 instrumentals? On a 13-track album? Only 35 minutes in length? If I look at this through an incredibly narrow lens, I can maybe see the point. It's Paul experimenting with going solo, with different sounds, different approaches, etc. Perhaps there's some value in this to him, but to the listener it's pretty limited. I can't help but guess that many people felt like they got ripped off when they bought this record. It's a very underwhelming effort where Paul appears to mail it in.

Random acoustic and instrumental sections does not do this any favors.

2.5. I liked it. It was nice.

I will always love Paul McCartney's voice and bass playing, but what the fuck. If he wasn't a Beatle this would not have been released. There's one finished song on here, and it is a classic, but most of the rest are just sketches or half formed ideas. Fair enough wanting to move toward a more lofi production, but this sounds like a home made demo - which it is.

Mercifully this is a short album. Other than Oo You and Maybe I’m Amazed, it’s forgettable and boring. It feels minimum effort with no real depth.

Yeah, this is trash. Later on with Wings as supporting band, McCartney did some good stuff. But this is not it. Without Beatles fame, no one would have given this demo tape any kind of chance after say two and a half tracks.

Sorry Paul I didn't love it but ur a genius

Very strange for a McCartney solo album. Surprisingly boring and one-note. Honestly feels like Paul doing his best Brian Eno impression, and that impression being subpar. Some interesting moments but mostly skippable. Top tracks: Momma Miss America, Maybe I'm Amazed

Not my prefered by Paul McCartney

Híjole, no esperaba el Abbey Road ni nada, pero el primer disco como solista de Sir Paul me dio una flojera inmensa. Creo que hasta los tracks instrumentales son más interesantes que las cantadas. No fui fan. 34 minutos que me parecieron largos y medio inútiles.

Nice, but pedestrian. Not edgy enough for me.

I don't get the love. It's not bad, but it's nothing that wasn't already done many times before.

Maybe I’m amazed is one of my favorite songs ever, and there’s a few tracks here and there that are decent, but I don’t think this is an album I would revisit. The vibe is alright, maybe it’s because it’s older lofi, but jt does feel like a demo tape more than anything. Like maybe it wasn’t even meant to be released? I don’t think I quite get what it’s going for, but it’s not unlistenable. I’d say 2, I’m glad I heard it.

Not a fan

Average songs from a great artist

this album… it’s disjointed. many of the songs seem like “first drafts” rather than final products… half-assed and subpar products. hell, “singalong junk” was basically just an improved version of “junk”… a song earlier in the album. it seems as if mr. mccartney figured he could mail it in and people would buy it simply because he was a beatle.

Tynne greier. Beste låt Junk/ Singalong Junk.

Harmlös musik men extremt ointressant, förstår mig inte alls på detta.

Boring.

Interesting mix of songs. Felt like each track changed the mood. Enjoyed a few songs like Momma Miss America and Singalong Junk but mostly wasn't too excited. 2.5

One thing you can say about McCartney is that he always sounds like Paul McCartney. This sounded like Beatles out-takes and demos that didn't quite make the cut. Which makes sense given the year of release. There was a feel of the White Album about a lot of this, especially some of the drumming. Not unpleasant but nothing here really jumped out and grabbed me either.

if this album was solely instrumental id probably like it

pauly aint a drummer but its alright

Why is this on the list? Half of the album sounds like experimental b-sides. That's not bad per se but doesn't need to be on the list. In fact, I was even a bit disappointed. Hence my low rating. Paul McCartney did so much better whether with the Beatles, the wings or some other musicians.

This is not great, as much as I love McCartney. It sounds like an array of sketches in demo quality, with the only great track being Maybe I'm Amazed. I have no idea why it's rated so high. He sounds like a fool in love.

Thought it was neat how this influenced later low fi artists but god is this unlistenable :/

Having absolutely no attachment to the Beatles or Paul this album is hilarious. THIS is what he wanted to do instead of the Beatles? He couldn’t talk to John and be like okay we can do some political stuff if you’ll let me do my not very good nursery rhymes. Okay

Some good music but nothing that is MUST listen. Paul did better things.

People have credited this as the start of lo-fi. But, you know, the songs still have to be GOOD. They feel so demo-y, there’s nothing backing it up. “Maybe I’m Amazed,” of course, still rocks. I have heard “Junk” before. The rest just sounds too much like song ideas that need to be fleshed out a LOT more. NEXT.

Paul McCartney releases an album full of half-baked demos and one excellent song (Maybe I'm Amazed). This must be in the book mainly for its "historic" significance since it's Paul McCartney's first solo album, but from a standpoint of quality, it's not there. In particular, the drums sound very amateur, both playing-wise and recording quality. What's a little sad is that, for all the comments about how this was one of the first lo-fi/indie sounding albums, had anyone other than Paul McCartney tried to get a record label to release this album they'd be sent packing. Favorite tracks: Every Night (one of the few songs on the album that sounds like a song with potential, but still sounds like a demo), Singalong Junk (ironically, this instrumental version of "Junk" sounds nicer than the full song on Side 1), Maybe I'm Amazed (a classic that seems completely out of place on this album, although I admit I admit I never realized it has some of the lo-fi elements of the other tracks).

Just didn’t do it for me.

Paul McCartney saying "Believe me, mama" made my skin crawl.

Congrats on taking "solo album" as seriously as possible. Maybe finish a couple songs before releasing this half-baked Beatles out-take collection.

Really dull. Where’s the oomph. Needs wings.

The worst Beatle by far.

Beatles stuff is better and that’s about all I have to say

Appreciate the one-man-band 4-track, low-fi vibe, but not many memorable songs here really. Awesome 70s hard panning though. Favourite track: Junk.

Forgettable.

I can imagine for die hard fans these "sketches" of songs are interesting as a suggestion of what Paul McCartney would do as a solo artist, but for me this felt a little bit too inconsequential. A couple of decent melodies, but nothing here feels like it stands up as being amongst his best work.

naja, wenn's kein Beatles gewesen wäre, wäre das einfach an mir vorbeigegangen

Kreen-Akrore could've been brilliant if he didn't breathe all over it.

McCartney

Not a huge fan of this. There’sa couple decent songs, but nothing that really draws me back. 2/5

Eh, for being the Beatle that people say was the best writer, the music here isn't giving me anything to latch onto or care for, either the songs are too short folk blues songs or they are blues songs that are more grating than any in its genre should. I guess overall it's okay but it feels so directionless the only songs that were good were the little weird instrumentals (Momma Miss America and Kreen - Akrore), the rest I can do without.

Beat, 1970 -> 2

The man just does not get me going

Not his best effort. One example of good song writing and a bunch of filler.

Shocking, and not for the right reasons. I'm beginning to rethink my assessment that Ringo Star being is lowlight of post-Beatles success...

This album didn’t contain a lot of what I like about Paul. It felt like a lot of random strumming and spoken word. Not a fan.

Low fidelity debut album from Paul McCartney that was recorded at house in secrecy, all instruments were performed by Paul (except when the contributions were by Linda) and overdubbed on four-track tape. Short songs, minimal blues fragments, "Every Night" is the first song that feels fully formed, his vocalizations flirt with the melody of "You Never Give Me Your Money." Less experimental and electronic than his subsequent solo album but "Hot As Sun/Glasses" sort of is a preview of coming attractions. "Junk" a song about the economic impact on small businesses or nostalgia? "Man We Was Lonely" has a sort of "Our House" jauntiness, a duet of domestic bliss with vocals from Linda and then an affected Southern twang accent from an icon of British rock..."Oo you" has great cowbell and blues guitar swagger, a song about someone who walks, talks, looks like a woman. "Momma Miss America" is such a contrast to John Lennon's "Mother" from Plastic Ono Band, an instrumental comprised of two parts, funky bass, piano, searing guitar and rather rough percussion. "Teddy Boy," strummed guitar pop song about a child who becomes jealous of his mother's lover and escapes into his head. It seems like this album aspires to Syd Barrett solo albums of pop whimsy. But, with a lot of less than essential instrumental tracks it doesn't really seem like a cohesive album. Though it is intriguing to see what Paul McCartney sought to create from the comfort of his home. "Maybe I'm Amazed" is the sonic sequel to "Hey Jude" and the only single from this album that sounds like a Beatles outtake or future Wings material, but it has never been a favorite of mine. "Kreen-Akrore" is percussion heavy with monkey howls and then Beach Boys vocalization and then breathing, perhaps it was an homage to the experimental music being produced by John Lennon and Yoko Ono, but it just feels endless and uninspired.

At several moments on this album, I thought, “Man, this is why McCartney’s one of the greatest songwriters of all time.” At an equal number of moments, I thought, “What the fuck is this goofy shit?” So much of this album sounded like first-take fuck-around practice takes.

2 Stars (5/15)

This album gave us "Maybe I'm Amazed" which is a great McCartney track. The rest is just fine/feels like a lot of b-sides and unfinished ideas. Ram is better in everyway.

I know a ton of his solo work and with Wings. Never listened to his first album in its entirety. Really short songs, like sketches or rough drafts, this stuff was falling out of his brain in a creative high. The sign above says "Beware, Musical Genius At Work". It feels like some of the White Album with its randomness and seemingly incomplete songs. 13 songs and I knew one. Nothing really stands out as must-hear stuff outside of "Maybe I'm Amazed". I may have heard "Every Night" once or twice, same with "Junk" but neither are true standouts in his catalog. I wasn't impressed and I definitely don't think this was must-hear music nor does it deserve a spot on the Top 1001. It's incomplete, it's haphazard, it's brief and it doesn't offer the listener anything to really dig into. It sounds like Beatles songs that should have stayed on the cutting room floor (and I'm a fan).

A couple of songs that are vaguely Beatlesque. A couple of instrumentals. Mostly boring songs and then you have Maybe I'm Amazed which is really great (and the only reason this doesn't get 1 star). Not enough to want to own or care to listen to again.

This album felt like some compilation of outtakes and rarities enjoyed only by people who already love the artist, to the point that i was relieved when "Baby I'm Amazed" crashed in out of nowhere, making me more confident that I had not put on the wrong album by accident. 1.5 stars

Some OK tunes or rather, parts of tunes, but mainly, meh

There's not much to this album except for "Maybe I'm Amazed." It's not a bad album to listen to, but there really isn't anything spectacular about it. Of all his solo works to choose from, I don't know if this is the one to make a "must listen" list.

Ihan hyvää musisointia, en kuuntelisi toiste kuitenkaan.

Beatles, Solo, Amateur, British, Celebrity, Farting, Old, Ruined orgasm

Turns out, Paul McCartney is just a strange dude. I guess that makes sense, though. I mean, what else are you supposed to do after you quit one of the most beloved, most accessible bands in history where you were known as the “traditional” one, but make weird, quasi-experimental music? McCartney is definitely not what I expected. I don’t think anyone expected it, to be honest. It’s 1/3 loose instrumental jams, 1/3 joke piss-take songs, and 1/3 nuggets of an idea that are never fleshed out much. None of it is particularly bad, mind you, and I think McCartney got more annoying and more ADHD later on in his solo career and with Wings, but the ADHD bounce-around-and-never-flesh-anything-out is a huge weakness. In fact, it’s what keeps this album from being great. There’s definitely some very good songs here – “That Would Be Something,” “Every Night,” and “Maybe I’m Amazed” – but they’re surrounded by ✨Ideas, Not Songs™️✨. Again, none of those ideas are bad, but they’re just not…quite there. As a result, McCartney feels like an escape from the biggest band in the world, not an authentic solo debut. And maybe Paul is just a strange little guy who never made a perfect solo album worthy of being included on this list. But also, based on the autoplay that happened after this record ended, justice for Ram.

Thank god this was only 30 min

I understand the historical significance of the album but it's so barebones and boring.

This is probably a 3 but only because of a couple of songs, so I'm giving it a 2 for not holding up all the way through.

Maybe an unpopular opinion but Sir Paul's foray into the singer-songwriter track is a journey to Dullsville. Impressive, of course, that he singularly wrote, played, sang, and recorded this nearly entirely on his own... so no hate there. The home-studio effect just doesn't charm me. Baby I'm Amazed is the standout exception.

Really a strange choice from a music perspective for this one. Feels like half of an album at best with most of the songs being bland instrumentals, and the other half being pretty boring. Was it only included because of its infamy? I don’t get it. 4/10

Passed me by without anything of note

A couple of tracks I enjoyed, but most was not as enjoyable

Late-era Beatles : kinda dull. First solo album from one of The Beatles : kinda dull.

Entä onko Maybe I'm Amazed ilmiselvästi paras raita? En ole niin varma.

Really didn’t do anything for me, a bit wishy washy and nothing particularly stood out. I’m sure someone really appreciates the musicianship here, but it’s not me

Not sure why this is here since it's not one of the great Beatles members' solo albums. It does have Maybe I'm Amazed which could be the best McCartney post Beatles song. Much of the rest of the album sounds like slightly polished demo quality songs.

In a nutshell: half baked is an understatement. Like a wide-eyed beginner given the skeleton key to a studio and granted free reign to record whatever they want, McCartney is a mess. For an accomplished musician, I'd expect more. Some nice instrumental stuff but it needed A LOT more direction instead of making it the Paul and Linda Show. Overall: 3/10

band on the run was better; 1 liked songs

Sounded more like a collection of B-sides, demos and outtakes to me. Not the best start to his solo career.

Maybe I'm Amazed is kind of the only saving grace here to me, the rest songs legitimately sound like unfinished demos. I guess junk is nice, then it's on there again as an instrumental track? Just sounds like an unfinished project and then maybe comes on and I thought, why didn't you do more of this? 1 star album with a 5 star song to help it

Cute attempt, but missing smart, quiet and funny. 2.5/5

Classic Paul

Fine. Just not as good as The Beatles. Let's just say it's his break-up album, shall we? There was nothing very exciting here.

I've always held the idea that The Beatles are the most overrated band of all time. Recently, I listened to the "Ram" album by Paul, and Linda McCartney, and I really enjoyed it, so maybe, just maybe, I can appreciate Paul McCartney in his projects outside of The Beatles. Unfortunately, this album is far inferior to "Ram", and is rather dull most of the time, with a few catchy beats, and tunes. It was about as exciting as listening to "Abbey Road" by The Beatles. Favorite Song: "Kreen-Akrore".

I just didn’t get this. Maybe I’m amazed was a highlight and bloody brilliant but the rest left no impression for me. It wasn’t bad, just uninspiring. Was missing a bit of Laine I think.

It’s Paul McCartney’s name on the album, so the music is good, but it’s a bit of a muddled mix of experiments. 2.5

Maybe I'm Amazed is the one radio hit.

Maybe I’m Amazed and Every Night are both incredible songs but the rest of the album is a rough listen, considering it represented the end of The Beatles. Not good compared to both Harrison and Lennon’s first albums post-Beatles. 2 stars might be a bit harsh but not sure I can give it 3 based on two songs.

if McCartney is the pinnacle of musical achievement then I'm okay with staying unenlightened

Lennon-McCartney were epic, but apart from the follow-up album "Ram" and the odd song now and then, I never rated McCartney as a solo artist, and this album is no exception.

Junk indeed. This is the beginning of a decades-long slog of schlock

It’s always puzzled me that John and Paul almost entirely wrote without the other in the last 2-3 years of The Beatles, and yet when they do their first solo album or two, the songs for each are overall just so-so. Virtually all the songs on The White Album, Abbey Road and Let it Be are great — no clunkers. So we have this — McCartney. One pretty great track, Maybe I’m Amazed, and the rest is lame. Kudos for playing all the instruments, and thankfully we get Band on the Run in a few years, but this? No.

Overall meh, but an understandable meh. You just lost your best friend and your band and you can still write “maybe I’m amazed”? Pretty good

Sounds about 25% as good as a Beatles album which makes sense

Call me uncultured or whatever, but I will never understand the appeal of the Beatles or any of its members. 2/5

Man We Was Lonely was the only track on the A side that grabbed me. Maybe I'm Amazed is a legit good song.

airless and dull

Obviously I have heard the post-Beatles McCartney, but largely just Wings (pretty sure I had an album). Not sure I recognize any of the songs on this. Not sure if this is an album. Feels more like a bunch of short cuts of potential songs. Kind of a well-recorded demo with songs, if fully formed, would make an album. It's a weird album to me.

Nothing terrible here, but nothing I will listen to again. It wasn't a bad listen, but I didn't get anything out of it.

It is all the reasons I’ve never enjoyed his work. Dull and derivative.

STANDOUTS: Maybe I'm Amazed OVERALL: 2/5

Just a bit bland.

Self-indulgent slop from the too-cute Beatle.

Maybe I’m amazed is a banger but I think the rest would need to marinate with me to have a larger impact.

Maybe I’m Amazed is a song I’ve heard in the past, the rest was basically new but also didn’t really move me. Not sure why this one is on here sorry Paul!

I was bored by the album, even the most popular song, Maybe I'm Amazed. I've heard that song before.

not a huge man of McCartney's solo work i guess. it was aight, but doesn't sound like there is a ton of experimentation going on. Kreen Akrore was cool, but everything else just melded together.

I know I am supposed to like it because it's Paul but I struggled to

It's the Beatles without the rest of the Beatles. McCartney puts together great melodies and is a very talented musician, so this was pleasant to listen to. I'm a big Billy Joel fan, and I can hear a bit of what influenced him on this album, particularly on his Cold Spring Harbor debut which came out a year after this in 1971 (and is a better album in my opinion). Maybe I'm Amazed is my favorite.

Kudos to Paul that he was brave enough to come out with such a terrible album straight after his stint with Beatles. He deserves at least one star for it. But it's undeniably bad and boring, really surprising stuff.

Other than Band on The Run, I've never listened to a Paul McCartney solo album (and I don't count that one anyway, since it was with Wings). But hey, this is Paul McCartney, and I love Paul McCartney, so this has to be good, right? Well, unfortunately not. Aside from the fantastic "Maybe I'm Amazed," this album was pretty much a bore from start to finish. I didn't care much for the instrumental tracks, and the tracks with vocals weren't a lot better. I was really pretty stunned by how much I didn't like this, because I really love Paul's singing. I appreciate the fact that Paul recorded all of this on his own, but the end result sounds like a rough demo instead of something crafted by someone working on transitioning from being in a band to launching a solo career. I think this was my first time hearing the album version of "Maybe I'm Amazed," and I enjoyed this version much more than the live version. The emotion in the vocals and the guitar playing on the album version sound so much better than the live version that I've come to know. I did like the bluesy guitars and and cowbell on "Oo You" as well, but no other songs stuck out to me. I appreciate this album's place in music history, but I don't think I'd ever come back to it.

I wasn’t anticipating this being as bad as it was. I love maybe I’m amazed but that’s not enough to help all the others. Feels rushed and incomplete which I guess makes sense with the context of what was going on with the Beatles and such at the time.

It was fine. I hate to two star a McCartney album but it just felt bland. There was not a memorable song in the album from my perspective.

McCartney is fairly disappointing. I can imagine listening to this in 1970, shortly after the end of greatest band up til then was even more disappointing. Junk is a beautiful song and Maybe I’m Amazed is a well deserved classic but at this point, it’s clear Paul needs to John, George and Ringo to elevate himself. 4.4/10

Paul had much better records, this one feels more like a jam session

It’s not bad, but let’s be honest: if this wasn’t the product of an ex-Beatle no one would have cared.

Just didn’t hit. Started playing it then 35 minutes went by and it was over 🤷‍♂️

Liked Songs Every Night Maybe I'm Amazed

2 stars. Demos and not great ones at that

Should be better for one of the Beatles no?

Well, there’s Maybe I’m Amazef… beyond that not much. Some borrow heavily from earlier Beatles songs. Some experimental oddities.

Pretty meh overall

Surprisingly bleh album. Maybe Im Amazed is an all time classic, but a lot of the other numbers just seemed like goof off filler. 2.5/5

Not what I like

this album didn't really do much for me. this album felt like an instrumental album more than anything else. i did enjoy the production on it, but nothing was too crazy. i dont think i will visit the album again, besides the few songs i actually enjoyed. im taking away 4 songs out of the tracklist, and im giving this album a 2. my favorite song on this album is Maybe I'm Amused, i really enjoy his voice on this track and the amazing guitar solos.

This seems like him noodling around for a bit, not like something fully formed. Its not bad but nothing that i feel i need to hear again (aside from Maybe I’m Amazed, which is the one song I’ve heard before).

Didn't realise Paul wrote Maybe I'm Amazed. I actually thought album on the whole was fairly forgettable... Maybe I need to listen again but didn't grab my attention whilst I was working away.

Not for me. Redeemed by some tracks, but lost by others.

I understand that it's hard to follow a career with the Beatles, but c'mon now.

eehh...

i feel like i did not notice this album for one second the whole time it was playing

This just sounds like Paul messing about at home because that’s what it is. I get the significance of the context but I don’t get why it’s here

Reminiscent of some older Beatles, but outside of a couple songs this was a snoozer

Maybe I'm Underwhelmed by the amount of filler on this album.

Banger album cover Ass music tho 2

I love this album - its the best! 5 stars!! (That was an account hack from someone I very much respect the opinion of, except when it comes to Paul McCartney albums x Ok, full disclosure, I’m not a fan, but I can also acknowledge and respect musical genius. Imagine the pressure on this first album, post Beatles !!! I listened to it twice and probably enjoyed it less the second time around. He is a legend but I’m just not that into him.

Too long

thank fuck the Beatles ended when they did. it would have a been a shame if the Beatles ended up putting their name to something as bland a this,

A wonderful christmastime

nothing in this album necessarily speaks to me

Some great songs, some not so much. Feels like an experiment

Poor Paul, trying to live up to his past.
