Gaman að fá plötu sem minnir mann á það hvers vegna maður stendur í þessu. Margt afskaplega töff og skemmtilegt hér, bæði hljóðfæri og rödd.
first listen silky smooth
Great discovery of w mess of an entry
Looked up her story, and wow. Powerhouse of an artist, and you can feel her life while listening to the music. A shame she’s not still creating music and singing. Ohh a much less somber note, there are some funky bass lines on this album.
Not exactly what I like to listen to but pretty nice.
What a journey this album takes you on. This album is all over the place, but in a good way. Maybe best described as samba music with lots of different western influences? It’s a pretty wild ride, excited to revisit this one.

Nice and jazzy. Didn't understand a word of it but I know she was spittin
very pleasant
I'll admit, I was pleasantly surprised by this one. I expected a more traditional approach to Brazilian pop music. This was anything but. Come for the powerhouse vocal delivery, but stay for the striking arrangements throughout. Really, the chord progressions and and instrumentation, especially on that classical guitar, are the stars of the show.
One of the most sonically diverse samba albums I've ever heard; every track is a new playground for Regina's enchanting voice to explore and run wild within.
This album is pretty nice, good grooves Will I listen to again: 30%
I'm not sure if this would fit the best 1001 albums, but for sure I enjoyed it. There's something haunting in the Brazilian music, at least for me. Rating 4 as I'm sure I'll come back to this when driving or relaxing at home.
Fun album. A couple songs in you pretty much have vibe. Good music to relax to
Charming, relaxing, lovely.
ooo the syncopation on saudade eterna. This album has been ripping it! Though it does sort of trail off.
Loved the great samba/flamenco vibes from this album. The more soft rocky songs were alright. Really good album overall, had my foot tapping along for a good chunk of it.
Relaxing feel good album, with very good music
Never heard of her before. I enjoyed this, especially the more upbeat songs.
I'd never heard of Elis Regina, but she was truly a great Bossa Nova artist. This album lacked a little consistency though. I'm assuming it's because the album is a post-humous compilation instead of a purposeful art project. Either way, most of these songs are bangers, and I would gladly listen to this album again. Best Songs: Saudade Eterna, O Trem Azul, O Medo De Amar... Worst Songs: Outro Cais
Old school, jazzy, piano, overall this was a very pleasant listen. Portuguese sounds so beautiful. Stand-out: Calcanhar de Aquiles
Some fantastic songs in this compilation. Funky, proggy Brazilian bossa nova is a lot of fun
3.5
I quite enjoyed this album. But I have no kick against soft jazz... I've been known to dig on some Bob James, Grover Washington Jr., and yes even Chuck Mangione. (8.1) ★★★★
Probably 3.5 stars because there are a couple of shaky songs mainly when some other rough random dude starts singing. Plus also because of doubts about whether this is an actual studio album. Bumped up to 4 for the site because overall it’s such a lush, vibrant listen with good melodies, good playing, good singing and smooth tangs of 80s tropical jazz synth. João Camel-approved.
Wow! I’m exceptionally surprised by this one. Her voice is splendid and intoxicating, maybe It’s better I can’t understand the lyrics. Then the bossa nova and smooth jazz kicks in! Tasty guitar licks, tight drum fills, and some thoughtful backing vocals. This is so well thought out and produced! The passion adds a beautiful layer on top. All around a memorable listen.
Not my favorite style, but a reason that I appreciate this project. I hadn’t heard of the album or artist, but it was thoroughly enjoyable.
A nice album to relax to in the morning, it was pretty cool! Maybe I’ll come back to it.
This was difficult to find, as it doesn't seem to exist on streaming (it's apparently some random compilation that came out in 1998, but the book lists it as coming out in 1979?). I eventually found it as a playlist on YouTube and had to listen to it with a bunch of annoying ads in between. I enjoyed it. Parts of it definitely sound dated — there's a lot of disco and 70s-pop piano/synths a la Carole King and Stevie Wonder, and it has its cheesy moments. But the mix of pop, blues, jazz, prog rock, and bossa nova/traditional percussion was a fun ride. She was a talented vocalist with a versatile voice, able to belt out on faster songs and bring it down to a soft croon on ballads. Her improvs and scatting on songs like "Aprendendo a Jogar" were entertaining, though they didn't always land — she definitely wasn't afraid to get wild like Janis Joplin, even if it resulted in a bit rougher of a vocal. She sounds kind of like an edgier Sade that way. I'll give it a 4/5. It's probably a 3.5, as I didn't love every song, but it was a nice change from a lot of the typical stuff on this list.
Not bad, I have no idea what they are singing about but it sounds good. Full sounding music that is satisfying to me. I will probably listen to this again although I can't put my finger on exactly why.
Brazilian citypop, what an absolute delight. Fun and nostalgic. Not every song hit, but it was a good package overall.
No clue what was being said, or how to properly evaluate this. It was really fun though and great background music for work.
++: Sai Dessa, Tiro Ao Álvaro, Só Deus É Quem Sabe, O Que Foi Feite Devera (De Vara), Saudade Eterna, Rebento, O Medo De Amar É O Medo De Ser Livre +:Vento De Maio / Música Incidental: Um Girassol Da Cor Do Seu Cabelo, Nova Estação, Outro Cais, O Trem Azul, Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus, Aprendendo A Jogar 8,2/10
This album rocked. Absolutely beautiful from start to finish.
At first I was apprehensive, but I really like the style. Some songs are very upbeat and feel like dancing music, others are slow and sexy. More than her voice, I really like the “background” music but her voice complements it well and is pretty good as a standalone.
I don’t understand any of the lyrics but the music is so good that I don’t need to. Great composition and plenty of funk. I read she was a Bossa Nova singer and if this is the other end of the Bossa Nova spectrum I need to reevaluate my feelings towards it. Great listen and a strong four.
this was very very good, obviously the sequencing is very weird because this album is actually not an album! this is one of the very few compilation works on the list and it is super annoying that one of her solid ALBUM works didn't take the place of this one i think the music itself is borderline boring and bland at times but her voice really carries through every track 3.5-4/5
Wow. This is why I love doing this with all of you. Never would I have chosen to listen to this on my own. What an amazing earful of Brazilian musical joy! My limits in understanding the words of these songs allow me to listen to the voices as pure instruments... What's weird is that this wasn't a studio album of hers when she was alive...so I'm not sure what to do with a best of collection...as it's likely a curation that depends on receptions rather than artistic intentions... Her story and fire and tragic early death intrigue me and lend an energy to the music that makes me appreciate her drive and accomplishment all the more... One thing this album has reminded me of is how music markets, like the internet, are still so provincial and exclusive. A lot of this has to do with language differences, but is still a poignant reminder that we are not exposed to global sounds and talents as often as we should be. And the persistent perception of East vs West global hemispheres continues to excludes our potential exposure to the global south.... I'm grateful for this listening opportunity.
Fun first listen. Too bad I don’t speak Portuguese, but it doesn’t matter. What a great voice!
New to me. Nice.
Wasn't expecting this. I've become a fan of Brazilian Jazz styling in the past while and I'm always seeking out artists I haven't heard before. Nice soothing sounds, she has a top notch voice and the modern take on Samba is a refreshing change. Enjoyed this, will definitely seek out more past works from Regina.
I was excited by how eclectic and diverse this was and then found out it's a compilation album. But still, a new artist for me to check out!
This was great
This was a nice surprise, although it sounds like the author of the book fucked up and put the wrong year and included a compilation album. 3.9 stars
This one was a nice surprise!
I like samba. I like bossanova. I like chill music. that album has everything. 4.5/5/
Cool to hear a Portuguese album that isn't strictly bossa Nova. Don't get me wrong i love some bossa Nova, but this was a lot of fun to hear the different styles and rythms.
Some vibes transcend language. Loved the production on this, and Elis has a beautiful voice.
Wow what a beautiful album. The instruments captured my attention immediately, and they're pretty consistently great throughout. Her vocals are so beautiful too, they work really well together.
Love that brasileira tenderly
This album seems to be really obscure. There's more notable albums by Elis Regina. I'm not complaining, "Vento de Maio" is a really good record. Another classic gem uncovered today. This is my first album on this list recorded entirely in a foreign language. I'll give it "Vento de Maio" 4 stars.
I find irgendwie me merkt dases nöd es album isch. Würi wohrschinli nöd sege wenni nöd wüsst dases e compilation isch aber jo. Alli songs easy guet

Wow, what a dynamic voice. Even on songs where she was singing the background in certain parts, like in "O Que Foi Feito Devera (De Vera)" it stood out more than the person singing the lead. At first I thought the songs were a little dated, but then I kind of got more into it, realizing that that was the feel, being bossa nova. I dug it more and more. I liked the songs that were more out of the box, like "Saudade Eterna," that were very funky. The vulnerability of "Rebento" and "O Trem Azul" was very stark. I really enjoyed that. Such a robust, amazing voice. Definitely an album I would have not come across on my own, and will come back to again. Top tracks: "Saudade Eterna", "O Trem Azul," "O Medo De Amar E O Medo De Ser Livre", "Aprendeo A Jogar"
An enjoyable album that I probably won't listen to again since I don't like listening to music on YouTube, which is the only place I could find that had it, and even that wasn't easy. The singer has a nice voice and the music is energetic. I don't understand the lyrics, but that's OK.
Beautiful and surprising album, a gem that is not even on spotify!
This was super fun
Very fun. Madi described this as Brazilian Abba
Like a summer breeze. Some of it is light and airy, some of it is jazzy and funky, some of it is smooth and sexy. She’s a great performer with nice range. Wow, this last track “Aprendendo a Jogar” is fantastic! I was on the fence about rating this a 3 or a 4 but this song is pushing it to a 4 for me. Love ending on a high note!
I'm having a great time with this one. Beautiful blend of impressive performances, tones, instrumentation, production, and composition. I do find it to be difficult at times to have that immediate connection with music that is in another language; I know I'm not unique in this, but I tend to listen to this list while I'm doing something else and I don't often go to seek out a lyric unless I don't understand it. For this I would definitely have to be following a lyric sheet to pickup. That's totally OK though, I just recognize that the voice here is more like an instrument that is scatting through a song. This was super enjoyable and worthy of being in some of my rotations.
Something funky and energetic in the music, and this woman's singing is amazing.
4.5
A genuine joy. Had never heard this before. Amazingly enjoyable, but what a tragic story.
This is similar to Bebel Gilberto (not in the 1,001), who I like better than this, but this was quite good overall. Never heard of the artist, would listen to again.
Przyjemne. Chuj wie o czym śpiewa, ale jest dobrze się tego słucha. Jest w tym pewna lekkość i dobry nastrój. 4/5
This album made me feel like I was in someone's grandma's house while I worked out, in the best way. There was that Mario Kart ass moment in O Trem Azul but so much cool stuff going on. Just great music
Pretty fun
Wow, what a powerful voice. I don't need to understand what she's saying to appreciate the emotion behind it. She has some insane precision with her vocals too. The sparse instrumentation really lets her voice shine.
Lively with a wide net of genres. Has some bluesy, ballad elements, and some energetic vocal performances. Overall solid. Favorite tracks: "Vento De Maio", "Aprendendo Jugar"
I started this yesterday, got halfway through, picked it back up today thinking "hm I don't even remember what this sounded like, but I don't remember it being bad so it's probably going to be a three star affair?" but immediately got into the groove! Fun! +Ky! Listening back it was the ballady business that lost me a bit but excited to get to know this more.
This was pretty cool
Idk what she saying but she’s right
Great energy. Great voice. Now I just wish I knew what she was saying.
SHORT version A wonderful voice and exemplar of a style and basically 3 decades of Brazilian music but this album from a very popular master is merely “good” and it lacks power, passion and commitment - its relaxing easy listening but I was left craving more and went to listen to her more popular works instead, as I wanted to experience her warm and sweet voice when she is ***really going for it *** (this album sounded somehow lazy or flat to me). If it got your curious , then check out her beautifully painful Suadade for some music tourism I was however amused by her album titling methods. That Magical south american disconnection from linear reality - ah chaos ;-) The end it is good - like a Brazilian Carol Carpenter - but I sense so much headroom in potential. It might be what happens when anticipation is just too great before hearing something first time?. Mea Culpa? LONG version It's Friday ! What awaits? Hopeful and expectant I read up on the musical adventure of the day. Ah!! Finally some more World music, a Brazilian artist who defined a style (BMP) and has more than 30 albums. Elis Regina 1945-1982, the singer, the legend, the film, the tragedy and legacy. I knew none of this before today. How so? This is her final studio “album” released a year after her appearance at the 1979 Montreux Jazz Festival (tantalisingly available as a live album) , and after her album of Saudade (a very special portuguese song from of longing and pleasurable heart ache), and she would have been at the height of her popularity and powers. The Brazilian went nuts for her - thats plain to see. But elsewhere? Technically the title used for the 1001 list is not actually an “album” she released - but this minor crime is forgivable, as you will see. The chronology and album title aetiology, as best I could tell from internet sleuthing is: (1980) “Elis” with 9 tracks which was reissued as (1983) “Elis-Vento De Maio” with 10 tracks which went on to become (1997) “Vento De Maio” - is the next reissue - a 1997 CD with 9 tracks in different track order + 4 bonus tracks. (2002) “Elis” - back to the original title now, the 1980 version was re released as CD with 9+4 additional tracks Confusing. Why such chaos? Oddly, Elis called many of her albums simply “Elis”; fully seven of her studio albums have this name: her 3rd (1963) , 6th ('66), 10th ('72), 11th ('73), 13th'(74) 15th ('77) and 18th ('80). Which makes me wonder how Brazilian record shops and libraries work - or was she a fan of the magical realist Jorge Luis Borges? To The music: finally? Let’s do this. I spin this disc and its okay. She seems to sing-speak making it all sound so effortless and gliding. The vibe is lazy yet relaxing and works fine... but is it the key changes that sound like false notes from time to time? Still, its breezy bossa nova and all that - I am searching still for a track that I “adore”. Some dancing music, then some longing Saudade vibes, some playful duets Well produced, tight, clean, good pace and very consistent but EVERY song is good- and nothing blew me away on this album. There are teasing moments of playful instrumentation on the opening of tracks- but then nothing happens... frustratingly it goes nowhere each time. Its session musicians doing accompaniment for her voice. I wanted more. Her voice is lovely on some songs but she doesn't highlight its warmth and richness quite enough - it lacks intimacy and passion , but you sense it was in there some there - which is even more frustrating ! It turns out, looking deeper, from a streaming popularity standpoint we are in the doldrums here mostly - these tracks are not her most listened to tracks. And there are albums that sold a million copies back in the day. So what is it about his album?. I enjoyed her voice most on “so deus e quem sabe” and the playfulness. Also a torch song and something tending to Saudade in style, and plenty of easy lobby style bossa nova “easy listening” - I definitely really like but I don't love this - and I am trying hard, looking for a track to favourite.... Still, I want to solve this album mystery. Why is it here? Legacy? Or the strength of the album? Did someone go to Rio? I will go looking for the following: Her best live performances. And her most popular tracks (those will 1 Millions+ streams) . I will report back. As this is pissing me off. Ok Im back., there is more power in her top tracks and more of the Saudade (beautiful tragic pleasurable devoted lovesick elongong) going on ... Call me a tough marker, but I can only give it a 4 and I am not swooning as I expected. And here for sure, I feel she “is not working to her true potential!
This is the great thing about this album project - finding great music that you wouldn’t necessarily know about! Great singing and hip groove, 3.5/5

Not as soulful as her early works, the bossa nova genre was dying at this point and this project did little to save it. Nothing new said, little new gained. I enjoyed it, though. 4/5
Great songs to play in the background.
Jazzy Latin feel
Nice, chill relaxing, she has a great voice
Ĉi tio estas bela.
This album really straddled the line between Bossa Nova and modal jazz very well. There were moments that sounded like jazz fusion and utilized electric guitar driven melodies and interesting rhythms. This gives the album a forward thinking feel while still being rooted in traditional music. The musicianship was fantastic and the singing was great. Overall, a really fun album to listen to.
Lovely
Music moves effortlessly as samba should, but has a bit extra
Awesome. Thanks.
Alfa
Bossa-nova brasileña. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Actually surprising. Cant understand most but this is an amazing album with a LOT of influences and variety. Samba, flamenco, funk, bossa nova, bolero, indie and other types of music. Very diverse, the producer killed it also mixing is great and sounds amazing. Very refreshing and relaxing
This is extremely listenable. I didn't know how easy it would be to listen to if I don't speak the language. The band ensemble also flows really well; they are laying down some great sounds. I will definitely listen again. 4/5
Today's album is a posthumous compilation album. Elis died of a drug and alcohol overdose in 1982. She was only 36. She was apparently hugely popular in her home country of Brazil. 15,000 people attended her funeral. The album is super experimental. Not your typical samba/jazz record at all. There are aspects of everything from psychadelica to yacht rock to funk throughout, all while maintaining that heavy Spanish influence. It's very interesting. Elis had a beautiful voice. Favourite songs: Aprendendo A Jogar, O Medo De Amar E O Medo De Ser Livre, Sai Dessa, Saudade Eterna, O Trem Azul, Nova Estacao, Tiro Ao Alvaro Least favourite songs: Rebento, Outro Cais 4/5
Interesting sound. Would like to listen more
Rating: 8/10 Best songs: Vento de maio, Sai dessa, Tiro ao alvaro, O que foi feito devera, O medo de amar e o medo de ser livre, Se eu quiser falar com deus, Aprendendo a jogar
Straight vibes - 8/10
Pretty solid. I was kind of stuck on whether or not I liked this album after the first 3 songs but I feel like the point of this is to explore new music, and I shouldn't be overthinking these ratings so much. Overall good vibes plus learning about Bossa Nova
This was a solid album imo. Nothing crazy ab it but it sounded good. Prolly wouldn’t turn it off but also idk if I’d choose to put it on bc I think there’s other albums that appeal to me more 7/10 ca->pa rating #5
Pretty good! Very smooth. Nothing crazy. 7.5/10
7/10 - It was quite enjoyable. It completely caught me off guard by how vibey it was. I do not know how much I will revisit this but it was a fun listen.
Didn’t expect to like this one but it was pretty enjoyable, nice and upbeat, 7/10
Not at all what I expected, but pretty good 7/10
3.7
Far out. Vibe and style are crazy.
Really enjoyed this and could have listened for longer! I enjoyed the hybrid of afro cuban jazz, funk and bossa nova. Had never heard of her.
Dug this, wish I could understand it but there was a lot to like regardless. O Trem Azul stood out to me.
Funky bass lines had me from song one. Strong lyrics and good grooves. Liked this one a lot.
Had no idea what to expect with this but was impressed! The disco-y tracks worked just as well for me as the more traditional tracks.
Love this, reminds me of Carly Simon. Jazzy, but with cool rhythms.
Some incredible bass playing, and there are some very exciting points on the record. Nice to listen to!
I really liked the music here. I'm not super familiar with a lot of non-English language music but found all of this very listenable and frequently awesome. Great instrumentals, great vocals, and a lot of emotion that came through on the vocal delivery. The tracks were all a bit fragmented but it seems that this is a compilation album, which means I'm gonna top out for this one at 4 stars. Still, great listen! Can't wait to explore more of her stuff
Three stars, great stuff. Maybe 4.
dreading this a bit as foreign language Jazz not exactly my thing. but just enjoyable upbeat music 4
BOPS !
A very pleasant and previously unheard compilation of fusion-inflected samba music. Frankly, this project could use a few hundred more entries like this instead of just being every Brit-pop album released between 1965 and 1998. I know what Blur sounds like, give me what the other 95% of the world listens to.
Can’t quite work out if this is a compilation or an album (as a lot of the songs look like they are lifted from a 1980 self-titled album), but either way it’s a wonderful little record and Elis Regina has a great voice. It’s got the obligatory ballads that tend to be found on a lot of Brazilian pop records from the era, but importantly a lot of the rest of the time it funks and grooves and makes you wish you were lying on a beach in Rio sipping Pina Coladas. Shame she died so young.
Difficult to get ahold of but fairly fun. Reminds me a lot of a Brazilian Mariya Takeuchi in a good way. One I'd like to revisit but not being on Spotify is a bit of a pain. 11/01/24
I used the playlist posted by someone in the reviews to listen to this. I really enjoyed this album. It’s a creative mix of genres and there is a ton of personality in Regina’s voice.
I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I wasn’t super fond of the parts that were venturing dangerously close to smooth-jazz territory, but I suppose it comes with the 70s. I liked the variety of songs and enjoyed her voice.
Pretty sweet Latin beats. Approaching the level of prog I like, and all acoustic. Very nice to hear something I would never otherwise have been exposed to.
Slaps
I am surprised that I am familiar with this person and their music. She has a really good voice. I don't speak Portuguese but she do be spitting. Certain songs give a city pop vibe even though that was a more 80s-Japan music thing. Some songs have less energy than others, but overall this is still pretty good and enjoyable. Feeling a strong 3 to light 4 on this one.
This was a fun listen of an artist that was certainly not known to me. I kind of think that posthumous compilation releases shouldn't really count as an album, but that's just one of many already known issues with this list. Really enjoyed this and always welcome inclusion of a more diverse and relatively unknown artist on this list.
I really enjoyed this.
i wish this was on apple music SO bad because this was really really nice. i'm so behind on these that i cant listen too extensively right now but i enjoyed what i heard. excellent vibes
This album's year is such a trip. I was researching when this came out, because the year in the book (and here), 1978, is wrong, and it took me a hot minute to figure it out, but if you're curious, this album is actually a compilation of songs by Regina that released in the mid-90s, years after her passing. It almost exclusively has songs from her 1980 album "Elis," her last before her passing. It also has one song that seems to not be on an album, but was perhaps released in some other manner. That means twelve of the thirteen tracks are from a single album. Quite the "compilation," huh? I just have no clue how the author of this list got 1978, as half the songs on here weren't even out yet, and even if they were, she didn't have an album release in 1978, so the year is wrong no matter what. Just an utter mess over something so small. Anyway, the music itself! It's pretty good! I was already aware of Regina from my partner getting this album, and there's some great tracks on here that bop, and even the songs I didn't know up until now that also bop! However, I'd say it does start to become a little repetitive listening in one sitting, and the more ballad-like tracks leave a bit to be desired, but overall this is a good to great set of songs, compilation or otherwise.
This album was fun. Some really great tracks, made for a very fun experience.
-never heard of this artist or album -plus its another album not on spotify!!! -her voice is SO pretty -tiro ao álvaro is so lovely -that one is definitely my favorite so far -listening to music in other languages is so eye opening to me -mostly because i grew up in america with only english and sometimes latin music -in o medo de amar é o medo de ser livre the guitar goes CRAZYYYYY -i REALLY enjoyed that album a lot actually. it gets a solid four from me -her singing is beaitful and the songs themselves are diverse
I liked it a lot. Especially connected with O Medo De Amar E O Medo De Ser Livre which is quite a title for a song. No idea what it means
Beautiful
Loved this
Japanese citypop, but make it Brazilian bossa nova. funky electric fun 4.5/5
Pretty good jazzy, pop album from Brazil. Never heard of Elis Regina until today and never realized how legendary she was.
4.0
Really enjoyed this album! So fun and so many diff genres in here
Fakker med dette, jazz/samba støttes
Wasn't expecting much but I really enjoyed this, musically really impressive. So many interesting guitar parts and tempo changes. Reminded me of Japanese math rock band Tricot in places which probably just means I throw everything that sounds a bit complex and foreign in the same bucket. The slow tracks didn't have the same inventiveness and brought it down a bit but there's tracks on here I'm definitely downloading, sai dessa in particular.
Some funkified samba by a Brazilian legend. Tremendous fun!
A good Bossa Nova album but I just think it is not as good as "Elis & Tom". Still really good because Elis is a great singer but I feel like two or three of the songs felt kind of flat. Still because Elis is so enjoyable to listen to it is like a 8/10
ett gött album, om jag nu lyckades lyssna på rätt. nära en femma men några för långsamma lite halvtråkiga låtar. men dom som svänger, svänger som fan
No idea what she’s saying but I dig it
Absolutely beautiful. I have a huge bias towards Brazilian music and man….stuff like this is why.
Very nice imo
A varied and interesting album, dynamic rhythm changes, playful melodies, and a very clear influence on modern samba artists. 4 carnivals out of 5 💃💃💃💃
It is currently 36 degrees celsius where I'm now, and an album like this just hits differently then. Very much enjoyed it.
I have to admit that I was dreading this based on the year and cover alone. I was also disheartened to find I was going to be listening to someone singing in a non-English language. However, by the end of the first track I was happy to find that this was not at all what I was expecting. It seemed like a mixture of funk, jazz, strong progressive elements, complex arrangements, and fantastic singing. Somehow I found myself singing along, even though the songs might as well as have been in Martian for all I could understand of them. It feel it would be unfair to give this album less than 4 stars, but it doesn't quite reach the heights required for a full 5 star rating.
Wow, that was fun! What a great discovery 4.5
A mix of samba, jazz, funk, yacht rock and city pop. This album is great. The mix of styles all blend together for a great album. This is the type of stuff we're doing this list for! Best Tracks: Sai Dessa; Tiro Ao Alvaro; O Medo De Amar E O Medo De Ser Livre
Beautifully clear and controlled voice. Good mix of laidback and upbeat jazzy pop. Vaguely similar to Randy Crawford and The Crusaders, but more Bossanova.
I couldn't find this album on Spotify but I found the song Vento De Maio. There were other Elis Regina albums and I listened to her "popular" songs as classified by Spotify. I really enjoy the bossa nova vibe. Elis sounds clean and classy and cool. I'll explore more of her work and I'm sure to have this as background music in the kitchen. It's a little unfair to rate if I didn't officially listen to the album but I'm going for it.
I'm a little torn. I liked it, but at times it sounds a little too much like easy-listening lounge music. But not always. And she does have a very nice voice. 3 1/2 stars, and I'm rounding up.
Another musician that I would have never known about, if not for this project. I enjoyed this a lot.
Elis Regina is a grand dame in the South American music, especially Bossa Nova and similar genres. While I prefer her softer colleagues she shows a wide rang of skills on this album that has something quite powerful to it.
Que grande sorpresa fue encontrar este trabajo. Tanta potencia, pasión y entrega. El Bossa-nova siempre me ha intrigado, pero no sabia por donde empezar, entonces este álbum llega como anillo al dedo. No sad times while listening to Elis. Love it!
Albums like this are exactly why I love this challenge. Beautiful.
Very smooth and lovely. Incredibly easy listen and fun to groove along to. I'm not sure if this album got renamed or something but it's very hard to find on Spotify and it was confusing. I wish it wasn't so hidden and weird because it is a really good listen. Score: 80 Art: 60
Siiiick dudw🥶🙏
Zarn! Regina got the grooves💃💃💃💃🕺🕺🕺
Chillll
Although I enjoyed listening to this quite a lot, I found myself to be very glad when it was over. That gets it a ding.
very cool voice
Nice easy listen.
Although I didn't understand the lyrics, it was a fun listen.
My tolerance to 70s cheese must be really high today (at least as far as the production goes). Great introduction to this singer’s many styles & modes. HL: Tracks 3, 5 & 9 January 22 2023
I hadn’t heard of Elis Regina before today. I’m guessing from the song titles that she sings in Portuguese, and I have enjoyed most non-English artists that I’ve heard. Let’s listen! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Sai Dessa, Tiro ao Álvaro First thing’s first, I don’t speak Portuguese so won’t be able to comment on any nuances in the lyrics. I can, of course, comment on how it sounds though. Whether it was directly or indirectly, I think that the music from The Sims must have been somewhat inspired by Elis Regina. Sai Dessa immediately gave me vibes of The Sims: Hot Date, despite it being a very long time since actually playing that. The album feels like generally upbeat jazz and was a nice listen. I can’t see this being to everybody’s taste, but I enjoyed it.
Another quite spectacular gem from Brazil. After “Clube Da Esquina” I had high hopes, and while this record could never match such a masterpiece (one of my favourites from this list so far) it holds up in its own unique way. Elis Regina’s voice is a powerfully soaring force of nature throughout this collection of jazz-funk pop ditties. It possibly lacks the ostentatious songwriting ambition of Milton Nascimiento and Lô Borges’ record (though both make an appearance here as well on two of the stronger tracks) but this is still a strong collection of toe-tapping floorfillers.
Couldn’t find this one, listened to top album on Apple Music
fine addition to my bossa jazz collection, angelic female vocalist
Delightful listening. Though one can't speak to this record's place in any historical context relative to Brazilian music, it is undoubtedly fun and lovely and relaxing and caipirinha-friendly.
4.5
precisava de mais listens, mas mt bom
Very calming, I’d probably play this album in the background of a fancy dinner. Lovely vocals, and I always enjoy the mystery of listening to music in a different language
This was great, I liked it a lot, nothing that I did not enjoy, very groovy at times, also nice to have as background music
I don’t speak Portuguese but if I did I’m sure I’d enjoy the album more than I already do. Or maybe its charm comes from the fact I don’t speak Portuguese. Anyways.
A lot of fun
No IDEA what she's singing, but it's oh so joyful! Like an ethnic Stevie Wonder chick
I liked this. Definitely not my kind of normal listening, but I enjoyed it and would listen again. I liked the jazzy numbers most. 3.5/5
Very smooth jazz and samba. Hypnotic soundscapes and beautiful vocals from Regina. Absolutely a vibe.
Really cool. Put you in a good mood
Normally, with a 'world' music record, my review reads something like 'I font know enough to understand this, but I get that it's culturally important. With this, I'dsay it's made me want to go away and discover more about Eli's Regina and Brazilian music in general, so it's already a cut above some of the prior ones
this is the kind of music I came to this project for. this album doesn't exist according to Wikipedia and spotify lol. its like prog-funk? idk what to call it but its pretty badass. I like the variety of sounds on the album and different sections and stuff, its pretty cool.
I listened to this a while ago
Pretty great listen but as someone else pointed out in another review, kind of cheating with it being a compilation album. Therefore this album on the 1001 book kind of feels similar to Legend by Bob Marley being ranked 48 on Rolling Stone's greatest albums of all time list.
I couldn't find this exact album but I listened to multiple Elis Regina albums. I enjoyed the hell out of them! I don't speak the language but her voice is quite soothing. She can really sing.
Liking the first song.... Yeah, definitely pretty good through the first few This one was a nice surprise; nothing mind-blowing but I really enjoyed it and had no expectations going in...hurray!
I liked this! Chill vibes and a great voice
Another album by an artist I hadn't heard of before that blew me away. Lots of amazing stuff on this record
I am Brazilian, so I grew up with her. Her voice is just amazing. A prodigy, with a far too sad story. (7/10) FT: Tiro Ao Alvaro, O Que Foi Feito Devera, O Trem Azul
so many funky, rhythmic, jazzy, sample-able segments and vocals
Genre: MPB 4/5 This was quite the happy surprise. Once realizing this album, Vento de maio, was a sort of reissue/posthumous release of a not-as-well known Brazilian artist, Elis Regina, I wasn't sure what to expect. What I found was that I'm certainly a fan of MPB (música popular brasileira). Earlier in this exercise, I received an album from the Tropicália movement in Brazil (Caetano Veloso), which I enjoyed quite a lot. This I enjoyed even more! From Elis Regina's stunning voice, to the delightful mixture of dance tracks and ballads, to the top notch production methods utilized in these recordings, this album really took me for a spin. The title track is tremendous, with one of the best basslines so far out of the 80+ albums I've reviewed so far from this book. She can also slow it down and let her voice really take off on ballads like Rebento, one of my favorite tracks from the album. I was super happy as the album moved along, always giving me some musical nuggets of enjoyment from track to track. Really good shit.
This is a very good selection of songs from Elis Regina to the international market, even though it's lot really clear for me where does it fits in her official discography. Nonetheless, it's a great showcase of her beautiful voice, her impressive range and her ability to make it work with a variaty of musical styles - MPB, samba and pop. This is the greatest voice of brazilian music and songs like "Rebento", "Se eu quiser falar com deus" and "Aprendendo a Jogar" makes it very clear.
Wonderful, very emotive vocals on top of diverse backing tracks; probably one of the best albums I hadn't heard off this list so far.
Vraiment très bon, définitivement à réécouter. Un beau mélange de sons et une voix très belle. Se laisse écouter tout seul
Unexpectedly nice listen - also got me on to some great Milton Nascimento stuff.
Different
I don't speak the same language, but I can still appreciate the gorgeousness of her voice. I deliberately didn't read much about the album either, but really enjoyed it. Didn't catch the names of any songs, or any of the guest vocalists, but a solid 4 ⭐ for me
Мне понравилось. Ритмично, мелодично, немного психоделично.
The instruments are so crisp. I was expecting something that sounded a lot more dated. Now - there is a "Muzak" quality to it here and there, but overall - it's a jaunty little album. As I've said before, these world language albums are tricky because I focus much more on the sound than the lyrics due to my not understanding the native language. That can be a detractor since, as I said - while crisp, some of it sounds like it would play in a mall or elevator. Rebento had a Stevie Wonder meets Elton John thing going on, which I liked! Album really kicks in with the O Medo De Amar track that sounds like Steely Dan came in and backed it musically! This is probably one of my favorite non-English albums so far!
If you've ever seen the movie Home and recall how the Boove start dancing involuntarily when they hear music, well that was me with these tunes. Hip shaking music I love you.
Bossa-nova brasileña. Me ha gustado.
Really nice, perfect for a dinner party.
Slapped
I like most world music albums I hear, and this one was no exception. It was good background music for kiddo and me while we played a card game.
Beautiful, timeless, and moody.
Helaas te weinig tijd gehad om goed te luisteren. Staat nog op de todo-lijst. Voorlopig 3 sterren.
some nice vibes on this too
nice to diversify my music into other languages, really enjoyed it
Hey, an album in a language other than English. I like it; pop Latin jazz but that's a sound I'm a bit into, more than other kinds of jazz. Favourite track: "Vento de Maio"
I'm not sure what's happening, but I like it! A captivating listen, despite not understanding the lyrical piece. Generally fun and funky but both the emotional highs and lows are conveyed very well. In particular, "o medo de Amar" was definitely slapping!
ok this bops I don't understand but it's good . Favorites: Vento De Maio Sai Dessa O Trem Azul
haha latina woman go JIGGY JIGGY JIGGY JIGGY JIGGY JIGGY DAGA
Never heard of this before. Not my usual style, but it's good.
A really nice Brazilian jazz album with some great bass licks throughout. It has a calm lounge feel that would sound even better spinning in my living room. A great record that I will revisit over and over again.
My first exposure to Brazilian Pop. A+.
Sounded so pretty! 8
Great album. Amazing voice and style
8/10. Good length, and very engaging throughout
“Vento De Maio” by Elis Regina (1978) Great music in the genre of Brazilian jazz, but without a translation of the lyrics, it’s difficult for me to assess this as an album. Elis Regina’s voice is very nice, especially in the lowest end of her considerable range, almost if she has ‘pedal tones’ down there. She’s a little unsteady on pitch, but has excellent diction and fine command of very challenging melodies. She has fine vibrato, which, interestingly, she rarely uses, indicating she doesn’t rely on it for pitch control. Some of it you have to hear to believe. One of the huge strengths of this album is the glorious jazz orchestral arrangements, beautifully executing formidable time signatures, rhythmic shifts, and unusual harmonic colorings. Highly professional—and beautifully recorded and mixed. This, along with spare but tasteful backing vocals, makes it an excellent listening experience. Too bad this album is not available on in the iTunes Store (although there is a compilation album which has most of these songs. I bought it and plan to add it to my small but growing Brazilian jazz collection. I highly recommend Elis Regina. Tragic end at age 36, though. Don’t do drugs, folks. 4/5
Some eaaaaasy ass listening. Alright.
nice
Surprisingly good!
Now I can fuck with this
7.5
A good world album. Fun jazzy samba. Some slower tracks, but mostly a fun listen.
Brasilianische 70er. Teils Fahrstuhlmusik, rundum ganz gut
What. An. Artist. 7.5-8/10
Good to see more Latin stuff.
Really liked it - reminded me a bit of Africa/Brasil. I really don't understand Brazilian music but love the synthesis of it with Rock/Blues playing.
Wouldn't have sought this out on my own, but I enjoyed it.
Elis Regina is considered one of the greatest Brazilian singers with a diverse, dynamic expressive, powerful voice. The genre of this album is considered Post-bossa nova which has jazz, pop and blues which I liked. The musicians supporting her are great. I preferred the the songs that had more of the bossa nova feel that others that were more contemporary jazz.
I've developed a great appreciation with samba through this project and I've enjoyed most of what I've had. However, didn't really vibe this entry. Still a good, easy listen, but not doing much for me.
I liked the husky quality to her voice and the guitar players were esp great.
Super consistent and Elis is a phenomenal vocalist… there’s just not enough for me to love it. I am sorry Brazil.
Not exactly my style, but very pleasant.
Ok, not what I expected to get, but honestly, it wasn’t that bad. I don’t really have too much to say on this one. I thought the instrumentals were very lush and honestly not what I expected from this type of album, I also thought Elis had a very good singing voice and I feel like it was able to be very emotional and transmit that across the language barrier. It’s not an album I see myself registering to, though, so that’s why it’s getting a lower rating, but it actually was not half bad.
No idea what they were saying but it was nice to listen too.
Bossa nova from a singer who is definitely talented, but I wasn't really taken away by any of its other elements.
3.5/5 I like vocal jazz, I like bossa nova... this is definitely an interesting listen with those influences, but it's pretty unique to anything else I've heard. It does drag on a bit, though. Fav track: Nova Estação
gorgeous guitars, nice groove. fun, dreamy, playful. favorite song: probably Tiro Ao Álvaro, or Vento de Maio. high 3?
3.5/5. I consider myself something of an MPB enjoyer. I love a lot of the classics like “Clube Da Esquina” or “Acabou Chorare.” The former being a more apt comparison for this album since two of its tracks feature Lô Borges, there’s a cover of “O Trem Azul” and the closer “Outro Cais” uses the melody from “Cais.” However sound wise, it’s got a lot more of that 80’s swagger with funky guitar/bass riffs like on “O Medo de Amar É o Medo de Ser Livre.” It’s a solid enough time overall and Ellis Regina gives some strong vocal performances. though in terms of MPB there’s a lot of records that I greatly prefer and would put on before I spin this one again.
Glad that there are albums like this on the lis and I’m not qualified to say if this as a particularly significant album of it’s oeuvre, but it did seem quite safe. Probably like the Adele of Brazilian music.
Surprisingly funky at times for what appears to be more of a bossa nova chanteuse. Although these were all well sung, most lacked a hook to be able to hang on to and, bass riffs aside, weren’t hugely memorable. Didn’t dislike it though and was something a bit different to the norm which I appreciate.
Nice voice. Easy to listen to.
It's giving Bossa Nova Steely Dan. I really don't have much to say, it's nice, calming music that does its job of nicely.
I don't really remember most of what I heard on this album, but I do remember that I thought it was decent. Yet again I think it being in a foreign language that I don't understand hurts that album for me as I have a harder time connecting to the lyrics Standouts - 3/5
This album's a bit like a Brazilian brunch buffet.. there's lots to sample. The compilation nature shows in the uneven pacing and some unnecessary fillers. Spins: 1 Playlist Additions - Tiro Ao Alvaro - O Trem Azul - Aprendendo A Jogar
Overall Rating - 3.46/5 (6.92/10). Overall a fun album. Nothing terrible, several fun jazzy tunes.
It has some really good songs I loved the sound 6/10
Nice album.
Rompiendo el combo de la anglósfera. Solo por eso tiene punto extra. Me gustó solamente el tema con Milton, el resto muy chill para mi gusto. Y LAS CUICAS???? Nota: 3.3
It was nice
Lovely album! I am not super familiar with this style of music, but I can understand why her Spotify profile says she is one of the most celebrated Brazilian vocalists. Delightful voice.
So bell bottoms were a global thing, eh?
Different and interesting but not really my style.
kind of gets my default for foreign language albums of 3 stars. Hard to get into some music without understanding the words but the music sounded fine so 3 stars.
Pretty nice
Man, this is a hard one to find any information on. It's not even listed in her discography on her Wikipedia page. The music is pretty good overall, though. The title track genuinely reminds me of medieval or Renaissance fair music with that unique, rolling folk vibe. "Sai Dessa" and "Tiro Ao Álvaro" are both incredibly catchy tracks that instantly get stuck in your head. I really like the marimba, or whatever pitched percussion instrument that is, echoing in the background on "Nova Estação" The bass line on "Calcanhar de Aquiles" is absolutely fantastic and keeps a great groove going. To top it all off, the guitar solo on "O Trem Azul" is totally dope. Definitely not on my wheelhouse for listening but her vocal talent shines through enough to make it an enjoyable spin.
Starting out could have been a 4 for me but dipped somewhat. @Jono - you might have noticed this is not actually an Elis Regina album. Seems like it was an obscure compilation album erroneously included by the author/editor of the book
-Brazilmaxxing once again, this time with some MPB from Elis Regina -it’s nice. and it’s always good to hear music by Milton Nascimento and Lo Borges. if this were the first MPB album i’d ever heard i’d probably give it a higher rating, though i’d still argue it’s some of the best i’ve listened to so far -Favorites: Sai Dessa, Nova Estação, Aprendendo A Jogar
3.2 I enjoyed that experience, it was a shame not knowing what she was saying, but the music was pretty chill/groovy in parts. Nice voice, just would have been nice to know what was going on. Cemented why I lean extremely heavily towards English music.
Despite not being able to understand the lyrics, her stories of love, loss, anticipation and optimism shown through in the music.
Content not found on Amazon music and could not find the album title in Wikipedia discography. The song was good.
Used the YouTube playlist. It wasn’t bad but certainly not my favorite music.
Definitely didn't hate this! Pretty catchy even if I didn't understand a word of it
Vento De Maio is a "greatest hits" release in the English-speaking world from Brazilian singer Elis Regina. The album is no longer commercially available, but can be found on youtube and in used physical copies. This release draws from a few of Regina's albums release in Brazil; these albums are readily available. Elis Regina was a generational star in Brazil. Tragically, her prolific career was cut short; she died at 36 from a cardiac arrest due to intoxication. SIDE NOTE: both as a "greatest hits" and as an "unavailable" element of her catalog, I think some other album (or two ...?) from Elis Regina's catalog should be on this list.
3.0/5
Didn’t fully finish it, enjoyed what I heard
Sounds like a mix of jazz and bedroom pop to me. Pretty cool
2.5
2.5
This was a fun album. Beautiful, pop inspired, a little jazzy.
Very pleasant, but my enjoyment of it was unfortunately limited due to my not understanding Portuguese. Regina has a fantastic voice
Like getting exposed to this bossa nova collection. Good diversion from my standard listening.
Lively. I appreciate that. Vocal jazz is my least favorite jazz. But this had value.
Pleasant to listen to.
Sure, this was fine.
why is there a compilation album here??? Favorite songs: Sai Dessa, Tiro Ao Álvaro, Só Deus É Quem Sabe, O Que Foi Feito Devera (De Vera), Nova Estação, Saudade Eterna, Rebento, O Trem Azul, O Medo De Amar É O Medo De Ser Livre
It has some strong moments but often sounds like Muzak
This album was far more difficult to track down than I expected for an early Tuesday morning in the office. My options were as follows: 1. Time travel to 1978 Brazil to purchase the record (which seemed unlikely, as I lent my DeLorean to a buddy during the COVID-19 pandemic and have yet to see either him or the car again). 2. Locate a record store in my area that both had a World Music section and this LP (which, I’m sure, comes as no surprise, I was unwilling to do). 3. Summon the mental fortitude to endure the aggressively repeated ads between every track on YouTube (also not happening). 4. Look at the track listing and realize the entire album (minus a single song) was sitting right there in the Apple Music link all along—I simply needed to rearrange the tracks into the proper order they provided. This was the best solution, at least for me, if you were wondering. (My apologies to any Spotify patrons reading this review. I’ve never been a fan of the app, and our relationship is unlikely to improve.) Without access to the relevant page in my copy of 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, I’m still not entirely sure whether Vento De Maio by Elis Regina was an original 1978 release, as listed on the 1001 Album Generator website, or a posthumous compilation released in 1997. Either way, I enjoyed it just the same. As someone who neither speaks nor understands Portuguese, I simply appreciated the album’s wonderfully funky, jazzy 1970s sound and the sheer gusto with which Elis Regina delivers it.
Smooth, cool and jazzy album. I can understand why she was a popular artist. This is a valid and good entry on the list. It's why I started the journey in the first place. The back half of this album has a few straight up bangers like O Trem Azul. That one could have been a Bond theme if you ask me.
This is pretty funky.
Great album "O que foi feito devera", "O trem azul" are great songs.
Completely new to me. Probably the biggest curve ball this exercise has thrown me.
Cool album.
Hermosa voz.
very lovely and pleasant!
Not sure a compilation album should be on the list, and this was hard to find. I didn't enjoy the first third but it started to pick up after that. Loved the funk jazz fusion and the dream pop disco bits were nice. She has a lovely voice and great delivery.
Multi faceted, novel and interesting but not my vibe
Honestly, I’m kind of surprised I enjoyed it a fair bit. This album reminds me of city pop, in a positive way. It’s not the most engaging thing ever, since there’s still a lot of very laid back songs where nothing interesting happens. That being said, there’s also some catchy energetic songs, and the overall atmosphere of the album is enjoyable. 7/10
Nice, good background again, Would listen to more
This was pretty good. Really varied in styles, and interesting throughout. Couldn’t understand a word she said, never would have heard this album or heard of Elis Regina had it not been on this list. But this towers above some of the dross I’ve suffered here, from known bands and albums rated by others. The musicians on here are all great. This covers funk, soul, Samba, and pop. It all has a cinematic feel to it, but maybe that’s just me, because she’s singing in Portuguese. Solid 3.
3.5
Nice album. Beautiful voice.
I couldn’t really understand the words, but it’s a really good morning album. Great classic vocal tone. 3.5/5.0
Elis has a very pretty voice and the music is quite nice to listen to while relaxing at home, but I did not find every single song on this record to be very memorable, catchy, or particularly exciting.
Pretty decent bossanova / samba record with some good vocals.
