Lovely voice. Don’t really have a lot of strong opinions on this one. Obviously he wanted to include more international music on the list so included a comp of a famous singer from another country.

Album 160. Vento De Maio (https://open.spotify.com/album/3GCQzHjGHSvtW99n7U7iD8?si=QQqtqrAaQhqNGaTibo6sfA) — Elis Regina (1978) Wow, Brazilian album, that's interesting! That's what I need more from this challenge — more world music. I enjoyed it a lot and didn't immediately realize it was Portuguese, like why it sounds a little like Spanish but it's not hah. Beautiful voice, jazzy latin, samba and bossa nova. 3/5 Liked: — Tiro Ao Alvaro — So Deus E Quem Sabe — Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus

Sounded a bit too 70s pop for me, unfortunately, though there's some great moments with the backing vocals occasionally. Not sure why exactly this gets to be here as a compilation when basically every other compilation is excluded?

Catchy and a fun. Exposed me to a Brazilian legend tha I otherwise would know nothing about. I don’t know if I’d revisit, but I appreciate this for what it is.

Not a bad album, but didn't do much for me. Shows my limited taste I guess, but just not to my liking.

This music is not something I would pick; however, I could understand why Elis Regina would be popular with those who like to 💃

I'd like to actually review the album, but I couldn't find it on YouTube Music, so I picked a studio album close to Vento's release year. I can't say I'm well-versed in bossa nova, but it was enjoyable.

This was a pleasant listen. A little too much "smooth jazz" feel for my tastes, but I do enjoy how that was blended with more traditional Latin sounds. Probably not a repeat listen for me. While it was nice, there just wasn't anything that reeled me in.

Really enjoyed this one, the final track goes so much harder than it has to. Musically quite deep.

A quite enjoyable album. Also, great to hear something in a different language. More please. A solid three stars.

Had never heard of this artist or album before. I generally really like Latin jazz so I'm excited about this one. Ok so although I really like Latin jazz and samba, I don't really care for vocal jazz that much. She has a good voice but I don't feel like it is anything that you couldn't find pretty much anywhere. Like I'm sure you have a neighbor that can sign just like this. The music is great, I kind of wish this had been an instrumental album. I know that defeats the purpose of the album but I felt like the vocals were kind of in the way the whole time. Some good Latin funk in there, but I still didn't enjoy the vocals. I don't think this would make me want to listen to more and I wouldn't play this one again. Hard to rate because I feel like 2 is not quite enough but 3 is too much. 2.5/5 and I suppose I'll round up for the band.

Not bad. I don't have much familiarity with Brazilian music, so this was a new style for me.

A lot of the songs are a little too slow for me but I definitely like Sai Dessa. This album came out the day before I was born!

01) Vento De Maio - 6,5 02) Sai Dessa - 6,0 03) Tiro Ao Alvaro - 8,0 04) Só Deus É Quem Sabe - 6,5 05) O Que Foi Feito Devera (De Vera) - 7,0 06) Nova Estação - 6,0 07) Saudade Eterna - 6,0 08) Outro Cais - 6,0 09) Rebento - 6,0 10) O Trem Azul - 6,5 11) O Medo De Amar É O Medo De Ser Livre - 6,0 12) Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus - 6,0 13) Aprendendo Jogar - 6,5 TOTAL: 6,38 (64/100) Current ranking: 608/857

A great voice - I feel that I'd score it higher if I understood the lyrics - but that's my issue not theirs

Amazing look into samba/bossa nova music. Tiro Ao Alvaro is espicially great. The rest is a bit more mehh for me, but I did enjoy it. 1. Tiro Ao Alvaro 2. Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus 3. Rebento

Elis Regina had the most beautiful voice. Because I don’t know Portuguese or Brazilian Portuguese, I focused on her voice, which truly was powerful. The backing vocals were great as well, which can’t be easy to accomplish with a voice like Regina’s I was reminded of the quiet storm genre with artists like Sade and Anita Baker, but this album’s release in 1978 predates their careers! Vento de Maio sounds very eighties, too, which again puts Regina ahead of the curve.

This was a nice opportunity to dive a little bit into a Brazilian legend singing a post-bossa nova genre that I wasn't familiar with in the least. Honestly, this was a fun, unique listen. It's hard to compare this genre to anything that North Americans or Brits typically listen to; parts of the genre rang with some similarity to 70s and 80s jazzy, funky, pop sounds, but still different enough to feel foreign to a listener from the previously mentioned demographics. Since I don't understand a lot of the lyrics, I am forced to hone in on the music and the sound of Elis' voice. I found her voice to be so effortlessly smooth and cool. My takeaway from this listen is that I feel like I understand, even just a little bit, why Brazil loves Elis Regina so much!

6/10 Solid three stars. Sometimes it's grating, too jazzy, too aimless. At others it has a great rhythm and a humour. Would enjoy more on a hot summer's day.

A very mysterious inclusion, which doesn’t even feature in the discography listed on Regina’s Wikipedia article. It turns out that this is actually a reordered version of her 1980 album ‘Elis’, with some added bonus tracks, and released under this title in 1997. Sadly, being outside the Lusophone world, I have no idea what any of these songs are about, but in terms of pure sound it’s a rather enjoyable collection of Brazilian pop/bossa nova tracks, with great vocals. It did lose my interest a bit in the middle, but I’m very glad this type of music is represented.

It took me way too long to find any notes on this release until I found out that this is a completely random compilation. I really don't understand why it was picked over her studio albums. I'm not even sure I picked the right version, I found at least three different tracklists under the name of this album. I don't really like compilations, especially when I'm just getting to know an artist, so if anyone has a recommendation for one of her studio albums, I will gladly give it a listen. This is an interesting set of songs nevertheless. The vocals are phenomenal. It did its job, at least, I'm definitely interested in exploring further. Favourite track: Aprendendo A Jogar

Pleasant listen but didn't do a whole lot for me.

- točke ker je po špansko :o

This is a really interesting album. It feels very city-pop adjacent. I think I prefer the more traditional bossa nova tracks, some of the more heavily produced tracks feel a little bit dated to me. Still a really fun album, she has a great voice.

A bunch of songs felt like a 4 and then there were a couple that were kind of grating on my ears that I would give it a 2, so I’m taking the middle road

Overall okay, but it sounds like the opening themes in TV series.

Not my cup of tea but it wasn't terrible! Just not my favorite

Good album good new artist to discover !!

Listening to this was like a chill coffee shop soundtrack treasure hunt. Elis Regina's voice? Amazing, seriously rivals the best. And the music itself is super cool, jazzy, funky, bossa nova, all top-notch musically. But, it's a compilation, so it doesn't flow as well as a real album. It feels a bit all over the place, like a good playlist, not a single piece of art. Some tracks, like the title one and "Aprendendo A Jogar", are great, but it's a bit disjointed overall. It's a good intro to her, but maybe a bit easy listening compared to her other stuff. It was nice, gave me some morning sunshine, but it didn't grab me like a really good album should.

Yea not bad.

I really don’t mind most of this Brazilian stuff, even if I’d never seek it out on my own.

So at first I had some trouble accessing this album as theres no album called Vento De Maio by Elis Regina, but there is an album called The Essential which has all the songs listed in Vento De Maio, so I just listened to that. It was very good. I've been listening to a lot more Brazilian music recently, and this was a nice coincidence. There's a range of energies she has (although I couldn't understand most of it). Tiro Ao Álvaro and Vento De Maio were my standouts. 6.7/10

Sure, it's pretty pleasant, but it's also a bit boring. It's not for me. 2.5 rounded up.

Fun listen on a cold Minnesota day, looks like this artist goes way back on the bossa nova train.

Very cool to learn about this singer who I've never heard of before. I generally like Brazilian music as a nice little background thing, and this fits that role nicely, though I probably won't revisit it a ton.

There doesn't seem to be an album with this name on Spotify, so I listened to some of her greatest hits instead, as that seemed to be the intention of this inclusion. What a voice. Her talent and personality is so apparent in her performances. I have to give this album 3 stars however, since I did not actually listen to it, just the artist.

OK background music

This has a great vibe. Something I would love to own and play at home. Not the best for streaming at work.

bit of fun but repetitive and lacked something that really stood out to me

It does groove. And it also riffs. Not bad.

pretty cool

I like this best when it flirts with jazz guitar or more traditional samba, or has fun with disco/funk rhythms and textures. But the keyboards and production flourishes feel outdated, and a lot of this album dishes up cheesy supper-club fare (and yes, I have actually been to a supper club in Brazil with live music like this). Her backstory is interesting, and I might investigate some of her proper, non-posthumous albums, but I doubt I’ll return to this one.

Ikkje så verst, egentlig. Ny brasiliansk favoritt?

Obviously a special talent whose live was cut far too short -- another tragedy of the 70s/early 80s. Hard to know how profound her voice truly was given the mediocre standard of this recording.

Was not familiar with her or this genre of music. She definitely has a great voice. My rating might change for better (or worse) if I understood the lyrics.

Compilation album is what I listened to. Seems this is an odd duck since the entire album in originals can't be located on streaming platforms. Listened and though I know not of what she sings, I liked it. The band(s) were cool, covering different genres and doing them all well. But what were the songs about? ⭐⭐⭐

I liked the vocals if not all the arrangements.

What a beautiful and passionate voice this girl has. It is undoubtedly the most remarkable element form this... compilation... album? Rateyourmusic classifies it as an album, while albumoftheyear and Apple Music as a compilation, so I guess I'm calling this the latter term. This collection is a variety of songs from different genres, like Smooth Soul and Funk, while mainly being MPB (Música Popular Brasileira); that are hard carried by the spectacular voice of this woman. While I'm giving a lot of praise to the singer, the project as a whole, I wasn't that crazy. I did dig a lot the more cheerful moments, and even though the slower parts can express a lot of emotion and passion, I didn't really resonate with them as much as the others. So regardless of how fascinated I am about the voice, I don't really see myself loving the experience.

It was fun

Groovy! There was some really great music in here

Don't understand this choice of an album, when she has so many better and more known ones.

Nice to hear in the background

Some cool Bossa Nova I’ve never heard before

This appears to be a compilation album, not really a studio album from 1978? So I listened to an "Essential Elis Regina" playlist. Good stuff.

I'm pretty indifferent when it comes to samba, but the jazzy elements and her singing style - beautiful and controlled without being overly sentimental - sets this apart.

only got one song.....

Great energy. Not much stood out in particular but the overall vibe was nice.

Beautiful voice and melody. I love getting exposed to new international music.

This is jazz - good Latin Jazz. But it's not a sound I enjoy particularly. Better than most jazz vocals, though.

It’s no surprise to me that this album’s global rating is about as close to a 3 as it can get. Everything in this album just screams “average”, from the melody to the singing. The fact that I don’t know what the lyrics mean also adds to this; from my point of view, the lyrics are neither “good” nor “bad”. I say this a lot, but I truly mean this: it’s the easiest rating I’ll ever give.

Bossa Nova! The second greatest genre to come out of Brazil since Brazilian Phon... ah never mind. This album was pretty cool at some part! It reached these neat little climaxes in most of the songs that really showed off her vocal ability. I also liked the progressive sort of instrumentation, like synths at a few points. I'd definitely say overall that it's better than Frank Sinatra's Bossa Nova album. However, it felt a little samey throughout, and I didn't understand a damn word she said >:( . Overall, I'd say it's a pretty high 3, and I wouldn't argue with anyone who gives it a four. Favorite Track: Só Deus É Quem Sabe

Saudade Eterna // O Medo // Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus //

A little odd. Quirky enough to be interesting, without being too offputting. The pirate track seemed random, but it had a cohesive sound as an album. This won’t go into my regular rotation, but didn’t mind as a once-through

Interesting to listen to once even though I'll likely never return to this album. Wonder what she was singing about?

More Boss Nova type music. This must be the 3rd such album in this genre in the first 30 albums suggested. The production on this album is incredible. Every instrument is so clear. The singing is of course excellent... however it's all in Portuguese so I don't understand any of the lyrics. Didn't hate it.. didn't love it. I really liked certain aspects (the production) but it didn't do much for me since I can't understand the words. Interesting to know she died in her mid 30's... had never heard of her.

Some songs were nice.

Probably would have never heard this album if not for this project… what a vibe.

Fine and nice

An interesting collection of 80s based Brazilian jazz

Nice jazz.

I could have done without the dragging ballads, but for the most part it’s fun andnaccessible MPB

dinner music

Just don’t know the world but it was a good vibe

2.5 Sounded like a pretty standard studio musician 80's jazz fusion album to me.

very nice, enjoyed.

Fun, funky, jazzy. Couldn’t understand a word but I liked it

Fun listening, quite funky. Some very listenable tracks

Ikkje så verst, egentlig. Ny brasiliansk favoritt?

I am not a huge jazz fan but didn’t mind this album. It would be decent to enjoy in the background while reading.

I think I found the correct album online? Had to rely on a custom made playlist on YouTube. Anyway, this was an alright album. Looked up the artist to see she was Brazilian, so I was naturally expecting some bossa nova. This sort of adds more to the pot in a musical sense, almost a samba/jazz-fusion record that slows down in some spots. Saw a reviewer mention that this reminded them of Japanese city pop which somehow made sense to me after finishing the album. (Now I wish there were Japanese city pop albums on this list...)

Triple blind here. I liked this album more than I expected. Not something I imagine returning to but overall a decent listen the first time around.

This was fine, I dont have a lot of opinions about it. I wouldn't chose to play it again but it did it's part as background music

Like it 3/5

I imagine because it was in Portuguese, and I didn't understand the lyrics but this down. It would be great background music at a dinner party.

A fine album, just not something I could see myself coming back to.

As one half of British Born Brazilian Supergroup Houmous & Chutney I can really appreciate Elis and what she’s trying to achieve here. 3.1 2/13 Sai Dessa

Favorite Track: Sai Dessa

I’m never a big fan of bossanova, but this is the best version of that. I like the energy and the jazzy, scatting moments.

I can see this being nostalgic if you grew up with it. It's okay

I don’t know shit about bossa nova. I do know that I enjoyed listening to this.

Had. Cool vibe, very upbeat

Good album. No idea what she was singing about but she has a great voice. Nice find for the 1001 list.

This was fine I prefer Jorge Ben for my Brazilian music though

enjoyed this listen. she had a great voice & enjoyed the bossanova sound

Good, but I don't think I'd listen to it again.

Mon frère. That means brother in French. I don’t know why I know that, I took four years of Spanish… granted this is Portuguese, but the point stands.

I find it interesting discovering music like this. It's so far removed from the type of stuff I would typically listen to, so it's cool do discover something so different, even if I'm often left not knowing how to feel because I have nothing else like to compare it to.

Glad I listened to is once but that’s it

A solid album with a few stand-out tracks.

It is a fun album. Not really something I will return to. But according to the internet is not actually an official album but a compilation, so I don't know, it feels weird to have it on a list.

Not a sound I'm used to, but it was a good, smooth listen.

Fun soundtrack for purchasing donuts this weekend.

This was an interesting listen but didn't make a huge impression.

Funky, jazzy, and full of life. Overall, it’s a fun little compilation with a lot of heart. Everything is semi decent with a couple of tracks that really stuck out.

Light and cheerful, with an almost rural feel throughout. As ever with foreign language albums, it helps that I haven't got a chuffing clue what they're banging on about. It's probably something as mundane as the price of a pint of milk.

Nice groove. 3.5 stars

Good for background. The Portuguese makes it all blend together, and it sounds more jazzy than anything.

I did like her voice even if I wasn’t in love with the music all the time. Doubtful I’ll return to this. 3/5

Jazzy bossa nova with a funk bass sometimes? What a unique style.

Some of it is great, but not all of it. Favorite song: Saudade eterna

Very enjoyable bossa nova (with good range). I don't think I'll return to this, but I wouldn't mind a relisten.

Great voice. No clue what she's singing about, but I can dig it.

Exciting almost other worldly to me. I imagine this would be great live. Infectious enthusiasm. High 3

Low to mid 3 for me, a bit long and doesn’t always engage me but lush production and I will be showing this to my partner to enjoy together, lovely vibe

Smooth vocals and funky instrumentation. It's a good record. Favourite Track(s): Tiro ao alvaro, Só Deus é quem sabe, Rebento Least Favourite Track(s): Se eu quiser falar com Deus

Not my style

this thing is god damn impossible to find.

This listen was especially dedicated for mr. Chama

fineeee. 3.5

Nice music and album.

Acceptable background. May feel otherwise we’re I fluent.

Portuguese jazz/lounge music. Pretty chill.

Not bad, but definitely not my kind of jam. Very adult contemporary, which was kind of unexpected.

Cool funky bossa nova. Solid listen.

Kinda liked this

This was enjoyable and didnt feel like a slog

Ok music. Interesting story. Not my style

It was listenable but it just passed right on by me and I barely remember it from yesterday. I feel like it musically it was similar to what would have been the contemporary American music of the time. I had to read the wiki page for Elis Regina because I didn't know her music but I think I would have rather heard more bossa nova or samba music.

A pretty good Brazilian lounge singer from the 60s/70s. She has a good voice, and it was fine listen, just nothing to write home about. I'm sure her music means a lot to others, but I can't give this anything higher than a 3/5 simply because it didn't really move me.

Unable to find this record on streaming services, but listened to an album that carried this title track and really enjoyed it. Soft and easy on the ears, nice gentle sound.

a few solid tracks in the middle! O Que Foi Feito Deverá

Standard pleasant music from Brazil

It was definitely a vibe.

Instrumentation was cool, catchy melodies, interesting blend of genres. Foot tapped the whole way through, but I’d never go out of my way to out this back on.

Good background music

Interesting blend of Bossa Nova, jazz and funk. Grew on me the more I listened. Perfect background music for me.

I enjoyed this album. Had a great beat.

Glad that i got to experience this brazilian star, even though i see that the book has messed up here and actually tagged a wrong album. So pretty hard to rate because of this. The compilation that was linked here flows in a nice way. And yet, going by some random reddit commets, the authors meant to put in elis as her lp. Maybe it appears later so i will give this here a mildly interesting rating.

Completely different from my world. Smooth and silky. I liked it.

Very nice not sure what is available reflects a 1978 release but ok and not sure I will go back to it.

Chill songs from an artist I’ve never heard of.

3.5 Музика португальською мовою це моя слабкість. Тут були деякі доволі сумнівні пісні, але в цілом альбом дуже класний.

I’m sure I am missing something here that’s good but. Perhaps heightened by the language barrier, I just struggled to connect. There’s obviously some interesting music going on and the vocals have a nice flow, range and what I presume is emotion, so it’s nice but feel loosing over 75% of the picture. Glad I heard it, and may return as on another day and knowing what to expect my get more of a connection 3 Star.

I like the sound of this will have to delve into the back catalogue

1978/98 1970's Brazilian latino jazz/funk/soul is a guilty pleasure of mine, and I enjoyed this for the most part. There's a couple of weak tracks that let the collection down a bit Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ✅️ Revisit ✅️ I shouldnt, but I do.★★★☆☆ (6/10)

Nomyntjing

Hard to review without understanding the lyrics or context, but the music itself was enjoyable enough

Elis Regina is new to me, and while this album is almost 50 years old, I'd probably file it under "contemporary jazz vocal". She has a great musical range in her selection and performance of these songs.

Very good, never heard of her before and probably wouldn't have if not for this website. A compilation is not an album though so knocking it down one star.

What a nice listen.

Un peu trop pop pour moi.

The most difficult album to figure out what the book is actually talking about. Looks like they fucked up and put a compilation/reissue on. Appears to be mostly the green self titled from 1980. All that aside - pretty cool - doing its only thing, with gusto sorta disco/samba mash up.

World music

Listened on the phone via YouTube. This was a fun bossa nova style album. More electric elements than expected. Some sounded recorded live. Trem Azul was a standout.

Nice voice and musical styling, but in spanish it is hard to listen to

Great voice and music. Enjoyed listening but diminished by not knowing the language.

3.4 2x good for another listen

this album had some wild swings. there are some songs id give four or five stars and some id give one or two. for the most part it stayed interesting throughout and it had some really great instrumentals on most of the tracks.

They way I felt like I was shopping in an early 80s Brazilian mall listening to this record.

Pretty decent stuff! Nothing too bad, not a lot standing out, but pleasant enough.

This was a lot more modern sounding than I expected. That might be more of a slight on my expectations than anything though. It was nice, bits of it very very boppy and encouraged dancing. However it also felt quite ignorable. It was a bit background music. It's not one of the genres I would normally seek out and often in those cases the lyrics might sway me towards enjoying it more, but due to my ignorance I don't speak (what I am assuming, but may be wrong is) Spanish. Which I guess made it harder for me to get into it. So I can only judge it as I heard it, which is a nice enough, but forgettable boppy jazz thing.

It seems that this album is a 1997 reissue of an earlier album from the same singer. Since most of her albums have the same title, it makes things difficult to differentiate between the albums. Anyhow, she has a good singing voice and this album is modern Brazilian pop music. Also, the lyrics are Portuguese so I have no idea what she is singing about. Pleasant listening.

Is Portuguese the second most represented language on this list?! I guess Brazil is pretty huge, but I'm waiting for more Spanish language stuff (and not holding my breath for any other languages, let's be real). Also, this album doesn't seem to exist! Or rather, it's a mix of 2 albums, and neither is from 1978. Where is your quality control, book guy!? Meta complaints aside, this is pretty good. Good energy, good vocals, good guitarra. A 3.5, and maybe if it were a legitimate album I'd give it a 4. Highlights: 'Só Deus É Quem Sabe' ("God Only Knows", if you will), with the silly little lyric "Eu não sei nada / Só sei que a vida nos prepara cada cilada" (I don't know anything/here's one thing I know...), 'Saudade Eterna', 'O Trem Azul'

Smooth and sexy. Portuguese Bossa Nova/Jazzy vibing by the pool kind of music. Did just that. Saved to listen again. Not exact album but close, it’s a weird pick apparently.

Fun Brazilian jazz/samba/pop music, her voice was really great, though there are other samba albums I preferred more to this one.

Not my vibe, but I enjoyed the harmonies

This was pleasant, if not entirely memorable.

5.5/10 Some exciting tracks, some not so much Highlights: O Trem Azul Saudade Eterna Aprendedendo A Jogar O Medo de Amar E O Medo De Ser Livre

Enjoyable listen.

The album was in another language but the music sounded good

This album isn't even listed in the artist's wikipedia discography what is *happening* So someone who dealt with this before said there was an album just called "Elis" from 1980 that had all 13 tracks but I can't find it on Spotify but there are three OTHER albums under her name with that title but they're all from the early 70s but actually apparently the album Vento De Maio under that name does exist just fine, but it's not listed under her releases and I can't find it when I search for it but when I actually click the button on 1001albumsgenerator that takes me to the album on Spotify, it does exist and it's fully available to me but also it's from 1998 instead of 1978 I'm probably only listening to a phantom album from out of the future because of one of Robert Dimery's brief ventures to a record store where he closed his eyes and threw darts to decide what albums he'd get that day, right before he noticed his Victorian-era pouch full of darts tore when he was walking past the section dedicated to the complete history of the Bad Seeds, I suppose, also another of his darts definitely hit Kenya by Machito but that was a fun listen so I have no hard feelings towards that dart, I still haven't even heard a second of this album but EVERYTHING WORKED OUT! so I'll just play it now and be HAPPY! There's a song on this with 96 million streams though so joke's on me for being uncultured That album was alright

Simply lovely.

I am a fan of world music, and latin beats are always a favorite. I am not sure that will fully compliment my feelings here. OK. I don't have a problem with her voice, rhythms, music in general.. I think she seems to be like an OK singer. I mean sure, she is professional and seems passionate, but also kind of stuck in that space where much of the songs blended together (Nevertheless being quite good in quality overall!) It could be, and may well be (!) that this album suffers the fate of many many others, in how the music begins to "sound the same" after a while and Elis Regina man well do much better taken a few songs at a time, where her passion and fun will not have a chance to become the same thing again. I feel this is too harsh and I do like this album... But I knew it would be a hard one to explain...

The Good: We’re getting a weather forecast! The Bad: Seems like a storm might be brewing... The Ugly: All our umbrellas are broken… So, I listened to the album, then I started reading some comments, so I decided to give the album a second spin to see if I had been listening with the wrong ears on… I was fortunate to live abroad when I was younger, and my father would embrace all music from the countries we would live in… and we lived in Brazil, though only for a year, then again, that was plenty… I guess what I am trying to say is that I am, by proxy, a slight expert on Brazilian music—no, not really, but neither is Mr Dimery. For one, this specific album is not an album, as it was published about 15 years post-humously, and would qualify more as a “best of”, which, I thought, was not allowed on this journey. Is the album bad? No. Is the singer bad? No. Are there better albums of this genre, that one should hear before dying? Yes… Gilberto Gil, for one, who I’ve not found on this list so far, and can’t find while searching. Again, nothing wrong with the album, but I believe that I could die before having heard it… 3*

Easy listening bosa nova

Good sound but nothing I’d normally put on.

Easy listening

This was a good way to start the day.

I had no idea what to expect; I enjoyed a good chunk of this. It's inhibited by the nature of being a compilation from different sessions. The performances are consistently good and her voice is great; I'll be rating this positively despite the quality of recordings and musical timbres varying more wildly than I would have liked.

Fun album. Like the grooves and the vocals are beautiful. This is the kind of random music I was hoping to hear on this list. 3.5/5 Probably will listen again

Favorites: Vento de Maio, O Que Foi Feito Devera(De Vera), O Trem Azul Some very beautiful MPB accompanied by Regina’s gorgeous vocals… though I will say this didn’t hold my attention for very long. A solid 7/10 record, but not one I’m likely to come back to.

Was expecting the music to have a much heavier taste of Latin influences but this was straight up smooth jazz basically. Had a hunch it was Portuguese singing and didn’t know this lady was so huge in Brazil. Quality voice and writes songs as well. Good listen.

Oddly relaxing. I could listen to that by a pool or beach and just chill. 3/5

Brazilian funk, fair enough but shan’t be listening again.

Had never heard of her before but really enjoyed this album. Great first song and, overall, I enjoyed the more traditional sounding songs rather than the glossy, overproduced 70's disco-fied ones.

Feel pretty neutral about this. Some interesting percussion, impressive vocals, cool jazz guitar. Would probably not seek this out, but it was a decent listen

Another never have I ever. Talented for sure, just not my thing.

The electric keyboard sounds like absolute garbage. Not sure why they wanted these songs to sound like they're using a toy to create the music. Elis can obviously sing well though. Definitely some good songs here, but it's a little hit and miss for me. It's also not straight down the line for bossa nova, which is great, but it moves away from the vibes I'm looking for when turning on some bossa nova. Can't imagine I'll return to this.

I like listening to non-English music. (Most anyways.) It relaxes me? This felt like I was in a hotel lobby in the late 80s.

Fav: Tiro Ao Alvaro Note: Good lounge singer vibes. Who knows, might even be a 4 if I could speak Portuguese

Great voice, some decent arrangements, jazz loungey, well recorded, took the ear a bit to tune to the vibe. This one's much better when the instruments fuck off to the background and let her voice shine.

Strange album, and apparently also choice of album to include for Elis Regina. Great voice and some interesting song structures along the way although nothing really stood out. That is, until the last two tracks which are stellar prog-songs with especially 'O Medo De Amar O Medo De Ser Livre' working extremely well.

I don’t know what she was saying but it sounded good

Def a vibe

may wind for may! i really enjoyed this, and will probably revisit for background listening in the future. 3.5

Thus album was okay.

I’m very glad this kind of album is on the generator but it’s personally not my jam

Not bad, IDK what's happening

Nice vibe. Last song sounds fun to sing hehe

Not sure if I listened to it or not but not my style.

I like it. Post-Bossa Nova and MPB with a bit of jazz and disco thrown in. This album is a compilation, so unfortunately it might not appear in some editions of the book. Overall: 5/10

Nice change of pace but nothing I loved in this one

Compilation from a lesser known Brazilian singer. Sends out of place in this list as you don’t have any greatest hits style albums so it isn’t clear why this is included. Enjoyable songs but not super cohesive as an album.

Very nice, not my thing but good as background music

Decent listen.

Oh an album not in English! The first track feels like the late 70's and I have no idea what she is saying. I'm digging it, she has a great voice and the music is catchy. I can easily see people dancing to this. Damn the rest of the album is pretty good as well. It's not a front loaded one. For me it would be great background music for a party.

some really cool brazillian funk tracks here with some really nice vocals over. i was not as much into the ballads on this one, and not everything on here is totally my thing, but when this album is firing, it is really fun to listen to. makes me feel like i am partying in sao paolo or something. unfortunately i felt like half of this album was sick and half of it was a little boring so it's a bit down the middle for me.

Perfectly fine. Would be even better if I knew Latin language

It was nice at times, okay at times. Kinda not my thing tho

This was pretty chill. I learned that I like Brazilian jazz after hearing that The New Sound by Geordie Greep was inspired a lot by Brazilian jazz. I definitely could hear that influence while listening to this album. I was much more engaged with this album at the beginning and halfway through I started to zone out more and more. Overall I enjoyed this though.

After a few days of classic albums, it’s nice to get something I’ve never heard of, and I did enjoy this! It got a bit samey after a while and I’m not sure I’d sit and listen to it as a whole again, but I did individually enjoy the songs and I might add a couple of my favourites to my “jazzy dinner” playlist.

spannend, gerade weil auf portugiesisch gesungen - klingt ungewöhnlich.

This grew on me as it went, saving the best until the very end with Aprendendo A Jogar. A solid 3

An interesting album, not something I'd usually listen to. I liked Vento De Mario and O Trem Azul.

Rating: 3.5

I love Bossa Nova and I'm glad to get something different from this list. Had few really calming and shining songs. Will definitely play some songs in the summer. (3.25/5.0)

I get the idea for including international music but this one didn’t seem that special. A little disco to start and then folkiness. Did not do it for me

As a compilation it moves from some great early stuff into some more pedestrian pop which is a shame because it starts off with a bang.

3 out of 5. Loved Elis' vocals and the guitar work on this one.

I like these Jazz/Samba records on the list. It's always a soothing voice and calming music. This was good.

I wasn't nearly as impressed as I had hoped. Typically, I like Brazilian-styles of music: samba, bossa nova. But the arrangements on a few of the songs on this album seem dated, even for 1978.

This is what I think Brazil sounds like all the time.

Brazilian Yacht Rock

The funky parts were really great, however I felt like there wasn't enough of it in the album, and some songs didn't fit so well. But in general I was very pleasantly surprised

Apparently this is a compilation made up of songs from two different albums, "Elis" from 1980, and one song from the 1979 album "Essa Mulher". Most of this sounds very late-70's/early-80's to me. Tiro Ao Álvaro is okay. I don't particularly enjoy her voice and the music is not that compelling either. I could have lived without hearing this.

It’s good - but I would not necessarily choose this again. It might fit perfectly as a movie soundtrack, and I would enjoy that movie

I made the mistake of reading the reviews first, it clouded my judgement. I found it just OK.

Fun if dated music. A good singer, but not sure why she's regarded as Brazil's best.

Elis was pretty good.

Looks like we have a bit of a mysterious album on our hands today. The book claims this to be a late 70s studio album from Brazilian singer Elis Regina. However, Vento de Maio, the album in question, is apparently not that. This is apparently a 1998 compilation album released over 15 years after Regina's death that doesn't even have a wikipedia article. I also thought that it wasn't on Spotify, but after clicking a link on this website, I actually found that it was on Spotify. In my opinion, I think an album without a wikipedia article is automatically not important enough for the 1001 albums list. If Rabbid Peach is considered more significant than your album, the album isn't significant enough for me to have to listen to it before my death. However, unlike other albums from artists like Koffi Olomide and Baaba Maal that also fit this "No Wikipedia Article" problem, I'll give Vento de Maio a bit of a pass for being pretty good. I like this album. The sound is nice. It's got a nice blend of jazz and samba with a few other genres thrown in there for good measure. Elis Regina has a nice singing voice. The writing, from what I can tell, is also good and decently varied. While I think this inclusion is weird, it's still an enjoyable listen that I can appreciate the sentiment of. Maybe they could've just added a studio album of hers or something. I don't know. High 3/5.

Easy listen but not what I would normally listen to

What to say? It all sounds warm and well crafted. But I do not speak Portuguese, which must be a serious miss here, as Eli's Regina is reported to sing deep lyrics. And that is it. Without the deep lyrics this becomes your average Latin Jazz experience from the era. Some nice melodies, some interesting arrangements, some terrible choir singing. I prefer to have my Egberto Gismonti if I want some of the Latin American driven sonic palette. It is not bad, but it simply doesn't trigger me.

This was a lovely little album

This wasn't bad. I didn't dislike any songs, it just wasn't my flavor of bossa nova. And bossa nova isn't my flavor of choice in general. Would still put on in the background if I wanted some chill vibes, though.

I liked it. Started to drag for me after the “Outro Cais” song. Apparently, it’s a compilation so it being all over the place (for me) makes sense. Favourite song is the intro. ⭐️ ⭐️⭐️

A positively pleasant and interesting listen, I think this album is a compilation so it doesn’t necessarily feel cohesive or flow together well which is a shame because a lot of the songs are pretty good. Again I can’t comment on the writing/lyrical content as I don’t speak the language (sounds like Portuguese?). Sounds good though, singer has a lovely voice and the songs themselves are well made, just probably unlikely to be something that gets a regular relisten from me. 3.5/5

Pretty voice. But really not my thing.

Fine, but not quite my thing. Vibe is kind of Steely Dan adjacent?

Things this album has against it: it’s the album equivalent of a movie that doesn’t exist. It’s not on any streaming service but YouTube. It’s just fine. There’s some nice stuff here and it’s about as 70s as you can get. Probably wouldn’t revisit even if I could easily access it, but I’m not sad I heard it. And that’s my glowing recommendation!

The way that this list has insisted on putting jazz samba on my radar is mind boggling. We really think it’s such an important genre that so many need to be on here? Was there a huge Brazilian music impact on the UK that I’m not aware of but is ingrained in their psyche? Getting past having to listen to this on YouTube, not being sure it’s the right thing, and discovering this isn’t actually even an album… I liked this. It had some heights, but evens out to a solid 3.

This was fine to listen to as background music. She has very good voice and I enjoy bossa nova. But it certainly isn’t groundbreaking or exceptional in my opinion.

I want to listen to this again. I feel like I might love it after a few more spins.

This was definitely interesting, and quite different from what I'd choose to listen to. It didn't quite hit for me though.

That was quite nice. I've never heard of the performers before but I ended up listening to the album twice through

First time for me - enjoyed the discovery

I love Elis Regina and have listened to her dulcet tones on repeat in the past, but I'd never encountered this collection before. I've heard records of hers that I would consider a high 4, but Vento De Maio comes in at a rather mediocre 3. From what I could gather, this is a posthumous release, perhaps not the best for inclusion on such a prestigious list.

Un oasis de elegancia entre la avalancha punk y disco de la época: The Man Machine de Kraftwerk, debuts de Kate Bush, Pere Ubu, Magazine, , Public Image Ltd., Dire Straits, Police, The Only Ones, Devo, The Cars y Siouxsie and the banshees, (también Chris Rea y Midnight Oil), así como discos esenciales: C´est CHic, Plastic letters y Paralell Lines, Some Girls, This year´s model, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Incantations, Équinoxe, Ambient 1: Music for Airports, All mod cons, Some girls, One Nation Under A Groove, Outlandos d´amour los directos de Cheap Trick, Thin Lizzy, Bob Marley, AC-DC y The last waltz, e incluso Grease.

Good music to bath to.

This does not appear to be an actual album, but from what I can tell, is a compilation of songs. I thought that was against the rules of this project but I guess the rules change depending on whether the author wanted to include an artist or not. I don't want to get too stuck on "the rules" but it does irritate me a bit a compilation can just be thrown in here. Because I am uncultured I can't understand very much of what is being sung here but I do like the sound of the music and it is pleasant. I can't think of a time when I would go back and listen to this album, though it's better than the noise rock I got yesterday.

Another entry in the “pretty but not for me” list

Almost something I really like...

5/12/24 It's not something that I understood but I appreciate the music.

чуть не дожала бразильяночка моя

I came in with no previous knowledge of this artist and I think this record will be in my rotation for the immediate future. It sounds more like 1977 than 1997, but that’s to its benefit. I almost thought I accidentally clicked on a Yes album at the start. I love love love the solo sections in O Medo De Amar E O Medo De Ser Livre.

Musically, this was solid...just not my thing.

fun bass guitar

Beautiful voice for sure. Really pulls you in (even though I have no idea what she's saying).

Fine enough. Interesting to hear a posthumous compilation on this list. She has a great voice. As a whole this didn’t stick to me.

6/10 Another total unknown to me. Brazilian samba music with pop edges, funk, r&b, maybe even slightly disco adjacent in places. Flows at a good pace, well sung, nicely arranged. But hardly forward looking - I would have guessed this was a mid-70s album not a 1980 one Overall fine but not for me Best: Vento de Maio

Not bad, but not for me. I did not mind listening to this, but I won't come back to it.

Enjoyed the beats and vibes

Not confident I listened to the right music, but tbh I liked what I heard either way. Quite a few jams, and I just love Brazilian vibes. 6/10

Niet mijn ding, maar af en toe echt goed gemaakt.

Very upbeat and jazzy, it has some nice arrangements. I can't understand a word they're saying, but I enjoyed the way the vocals fit with the music, though I imagine the meaning might hit way different. Good listen, though nothing groundbreaking imo.

Tiedä mistä sitten lauloivat, mutta tarjosi hyvät vibat.

Brazil’s classy pop Funk infused bouncy music Feels warm like sunshin

One of Brazil's greatest singers, Elis Regina, showcases both elegance and power in this late-career MPB album that shows influence from smooth '80s production. It is worth noting, for those confused that Vento De Maio is a 1997 re-release of Regina's 1980 album "Elis" (she had several albums titled "Elis", but this was her last), which includes a few bonus tracks. Not a bad inclusion for the list, but feels a bit hastily included because 1. This album is not the best representation of her body of work, being most prolific in the '60s and '70s, and 2. Neither Vento De Maio nor the original Elis album were released in 1978. I do believe Elis Regina is deserving of a spot on the list, but this kind of production--while pleasant--does not do her justice. Also I see people keep calling this a compilation? I don't think it's quite varied enough to be considered a comp, plus it features every track from one of her standard studio albums, so it stands to reason this is just a re-release with bonus tracks?

A fun introduction to the style!

Some cool stuff and wonderful singing here. Prominent bass in many tracks, almost sometimes jazz fusiony parts while otherwise more MPB and bossa nova. Some really great energy for the more upbeat songs. The slower songs show some emotion but don’t captivate me as well. Decent listen worth further exploration - connected with some but not all of it. This is often how I respond to a variety of Brazilian music - I like it but it doesn’t always resonate, probably because I’m not an educated consumer of it.

Brazilian singer, late 70s. Musical style I’m not at all familiar with. 70s pop with jazz influences. A style of music I just do not enjoy at all. The Brazilian influences make it a bit better.

Again, it was refreshing to listen to something that is not British or American and not rock.

Insane vocals. Didnt understand a word but i enjoyed it. Was hoping for more music to dance to, but this was fine.

Nice voice, some good music too.

She has a very appealing voice. Interesting and enjoyable, but doesn't strike me as incredible.

Vocal Jazz isn’t my thing but Elis Regina has a fantastic voice. Felt like it should be a vinyl listening album only. Ambiance required.

OK, the story behind this record's inclusion in the 1001 Albums book needs to be spelled out, because without said book in front of your eyes, it's hard to understand what we're supposed to assess here. The Spotify link points to a 1998 compilation whose bulk is drawn from an album named *Elis*, released in 1980 (checked that in Discogs -- the tracklist of that 1980 *Elis* album is differently ordered, and omits a couple of cuts found in that later 1998 compilation -- maybe one-off singles, or songs recorded during the same time period?). Trouble is, Elis Regina released at least *seven* LPs named *Elis* during the course of her career, which is where this app probably got it confused with another album with completely different songs, also titled *Elis*--yet *one out in 1977, NOT 1978*. Unless it's the book that was confused about that release date in the first place. Just like all of us now, I imagine... 🫠🤔🙃 Not that it matters that much when I listen to the Spotify link. The four cuts either partly composed (or sung with) the legendary Lô Borges and Milton Nascimiento go from good to great (even though the cover of "O Trem Azul" pales in comparison with the natural groove of the original, found on the no less legendary *Clube Da Esquina*). Among those four cuts, "O Que Foi Feto Devera (De Vera)", with Nascimiento, is simply insane -- so driven, so intense!!! But most of the the rest has all the earmarks of the worst impulses of mainstream music in those years -- bland instrumentation, half-baked synth layers, hackneyed disco-funk rhythms, predictable electric guitar blues flourishes, you name them! -- to which you need to add a few compositions that go nowhere fast, all of them written by some different guys (except for the Borges and Nascimiento cuts). Latin jazz is still there, of course (see Rhodes piano-enhanced "Rebento" to admire its pure form in the album). And Elis Regina was an extraordinary vocal performer for sure. But too often, those assets are drowned out by the fully performative, tasteless, muzak-sounding surroundings. "Apprendendo A Jogar" works quite well in that kitschy vein, I readily admit it -- but it takes too damn long to get there in that particular tracklist (contrary to the one of the real 1980 album?). Add the confusing nature of the record we're supposed to evaluate here, as I've just pointed out again (an original from the late seventies / early eighties? a later compilation of that time period?), and the whole proposition sounds rather unconvincing to me. So nope, not this one. I suspect the sad fate and untimely death of Ellis played a huge part in this album's inclusion within the list, and I feel a little cruel kind of shrugging it off right now. But, once again -- and here I'm gonna repeat what I've written just yesterday about that Os Mutantes debut -- a list of so-called essential albums that doesn't mention Chico Buarque's *Construçao* is not exactly a steady reference point when it comes to Brazilian music. At least in my own "book". 2.5/5 for the purposes of this list of essential albums, rounded up to 3. 7.5 for more general purposes (5 + 2.5) Number of albums left to review: 63 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 405 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 232 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 301 (including this one)

This is such a typcial case of "It must be good, but it's so, so completely not my style of music". 2,5/5

No es mi cantante brasileña favorita. Correcto

Day250 - another enjoyable bossa nova jazz album that im glad i listened to

I enjoyed it! Especially not being able to understand the lyrics, I thought it was a good album and I would enjoy having it in the background.

Fine, specially Tiro Ao Alvaro. But I wouldn't really purchase this one.

This was a nice, chill album.

Thanks to Jon’s generous text analysis of two weeks ago, I didn’t just discount this album right away - I considered why, then discounted it. At the risk of sounding xenophobic, I believe that I have different expectations of non-English artists. I press ‘play’ on albums from non-Western climes and of different languages with an excited expectation of discovery of a new-to-me ‘otherness’. I’m looking for expansion, even just a little. This album was 70s soft pop with lyrics, while sonorous in a Romance language, I couldn’t appreciate beyond feeling like Captain & Tennille had learned Spanish in a futile attempt to seem less bland.

I was a little nervous at first. I have a weird relationship with most live albums. There’s very few that I like, usually presuming studio versions will always be better. Better produced, solid and controlled (recorded) artist performances, etc. Considering I feel live music can be a religious experience at its most sublime, it’s a bit of a kooky personal quirk I admit, but I’ve always had it 🤷🏽. This kinda shattered that bias; it’s well recorded and you can hear the energy of the audience, one of the best traits of live albums when done well. And the music drew me in. I’m not as blown away as when I first heard Jorge Ben, but it’s clear after a few albums now I need to dive deep into traditional Brazilian music.

Very fun album! Not something I would find on my own, but similarly something I will probably not return to. 3/5

A pleasure to hear, inspiring the saudadesque hope that in a future life one's soul is reborn in Brazil, where can be a samba-listener and lover, futebol-watcher and full-time caipirinha drinker.

Ihan jees!

Bossa novaa. Hyvä fiilis kappaleissa ja tosi tyylikästä. Parhaat: Vento De Maio, O Medo De Amar... jne, ja vika :D
