Reviews (page 2 of 7)
Maybe the presence of Lô Borges on the opener is what makes it so strong that it took a clutch of chintzy tracks before the euphoria wore off and I realised that Elis Regina’s kaleidoscopic sexiness is fronting a Cold War fondue party’s measure of cheesiness. Some strong moments are lost in the cauldron of fromage. Internet sleuths advise this is a compilation album, evidence of ignorant sloppiness on the part of the list’s original compilers. If there’s an album just of Regina with Lô Borges, I’d listen to it.
This is pretty bad to listen to, but it gets worse as it isn't an album that should even be considered. From a Reddit post: This is actually a huge mistake of the author of the list, and I've mentioned it before on a post a few months ago about albums with the wrong year. This album is made up from songs from two different albums, "Elis" from 1980, and one song from the 1979 album "Essa Mulher". Somehow, though, the author included this album, despite being a niché compilation from nearly twenty years later. The worst part? The book labels it as from 1979, despite most of the songs on the album being from an album from the next year. Just a mess all around, it really irks me. I don't blame the generator for the wrong year though, as it's just putting what the book said. As for compilations, they are generally excluded (no best of Queen or ABBA, take notes Rolling Stone), but there are some that slipped through the cracks, such as this and the Hives album. Just the author not double checking the albums he's including, I guess. I'm supposing someone told him he had to include Regina but he didn't actually know anything about the artist, and just threw in some recent thing, which in 2005 would've been this compilation. Still confused where he got 1979 from, though, save for the singular song from the album from the same year.
Not in English, so that's already slightly detrimental. Also bad. so that's not good.
If I could give this six stars I would. I’ve never heard of this woman — this music is fucking incredible! Super similar to the Persona 5 soundtrack tbh which is my fav VGM soundtrack ever. This will firmly enter the rotation. Type of music that will meaningfully improve any day by listening to it while you cook. Seems to be one of those talents that worked hard but also had a divine gift, as I read that many of her recordings were put down on the first take. This compilation is wall-to-wall bangers. O Trem Azul is my absolute favorite. FYI for Apple Music, you can get most of the tracks from the comp album this links to. The tracks Vento de Maio and O Que Foi.. can be found elsewhere on the streaming catalog, and Saudade Eterna appears to just be on YT which is too bad bc it’s super groovy.
Wonderful album
I LOVE BRAZILIAN MUSIC 🇧🇷🇧🇷🇧🇷🎵🎶🎶
Lovely Brazilian jazz-pop
WOW WOW WOW ! I am so happy that I have discovered Elis Regina's work thanks to this generator. I loved so much the energy and the instrumentals of the tracks, I am definitely going to listen again to this record!
This fucking slapped. Loved the way it made me feel.
V nice
Love
Love all the styles she tried, she nailed each one. Amazing
I take back every mean assumption and thing I said about the creator of this albums website.
Very nice rhythm section and vocals, very enjoyable album.
Thank fuck, something a bit different from white American boomers with acoustic guitars. This is a lot of fun, musically varied and interesting - really nice to listen to, and what a fantastic voice Regina has. Immediately listened to it again, this is glorious.
Fun and heartfelt with plenty of emotional range for any mood. Very pleasant to listen to and entertaining throughout. Very beautiful vocal performance from a great singer
This albums isn't even listed in her discography on Wikipedia, but is still somehow one of the best albums on this list. I'm not familiar with Elis Regina, but I dig her sound; it's like Brazilian City Pop.
Love bossa nova music so this is right up my alley! This music clearly inspired so much Japanese city music that you hear in anime from the 80s/90s. In fact my immediate thought was Katamari Damacy music, which I love! A lot of the tracks have some strong 80s vibes, which makes sense bc they were released in the late 70s. They have that perfect maximalist 80s sound, borrowing from rock, pop, punk, minstrel music??, and jazz. Great album. I wish I could understand the lyrics.
I don’t love it top to bottom, but love her so much it doesn’t matter.
Loved this. I don't know why I keep being so surprised that the non-English picks here are consistently so good.. this was a blast with amazing sound in spite of some apparent repetition here and there
Kan niet alle samba 5 gaan geven
How to charm me: Bossanova.
5/5. Amazing guitar licks and writing. Didn't understand the lyrics but appreciated the singing.
This album is WONDERFUL. It’s just so angelic and delightful. It’s like drinking a glass of of freezing cold ice water filled with lemons and cucumbers while direct sunlight hits you on the beach, and your so relaxed and high that you can’t decide to get up to get food or not. That’s how chill this album is. It does have aspects to it that I felt disconnected from, like not speaking the language so missing all the lyrics, and the fact that I couldn’t find this album anywhere, I had to listen to it through YouTube, which is a miserable listening experience. Despite both of those things, I just feel deeper and deeper in love with this album. I the music is so happy and instrumentals are so impressive and fast. It reminds me of everything I love about j funk. Seriously this album is a total hidden gem! If you like things that take the time to give you some funk on the side along with your main order of funk, this is the album for you.

Had a long run of albums and bands that I was already familiar with, so great to get something totally new. Interesting to hear something from a part of the world I don't know much about. The music is really enjoyable. Rebento sounds a bit like Carole King. Despite being released in 1978 the production sounds very 80's, so both ahead of its time, and now a bit dated. I'd listen again given the chance but wouldn't be likely to hunt this down
Perfect.
What a hidden gem! Regina's vocals are lovely. The band comes up with a variety of interesting arrangements that keep every song feeling fresh. The vibes are just fantastic on this thing. I don't know how the global rating isn't higher.
Brazilian music is by leaps and bounds some of the best stuff out there. I’m more used to samba and tropicalia so this sort of pop is new to my ears, and just as gorgeous and fun. Relaxing yet danceable.
What anime is this?
Cool album. It spans a couple of genres and does them all well. It also sounds like it influenced Japanese City Pop as a genre, too, which is a cool touch. I think this may come into rotation.
I don't think I lost anything by listening to this compilation rather than a proper studio album. I had never heard of Elis Regina before this, but after this I really wish I had. I don't speak any Portuguese but I understand what this lady is saying exactly. If it were just great vocals, I would say this is a great album. But I love the instrumentals in basically every song here. There are some places where it reminds me of Casiopea, even. It seems that the version I listened to on spotify is out of order but whatever, I loved it anyway. Highlights: Vento De Maio, So Deus E Quem Sabe, Saudade Eterna, Rebento, Aprendendo A Jogar
a WOMAN on the list! A brazilian woman! The vibes were high
How awesome was this! What a find! One of the awesome great niche picks on this list. The instrumentation rocked and the vocals were great. Want to give this a 5 for recognition purposes but it’s prob more a 4.5 there were some ok tracks on this one.
Ok
This is great! Exactly why im doing this whole thing. Find an album that I am unfamiliar with (in this case I was also unfamiliar with the artist) and enjoy the hell out of it. This is the 3rd time that's happened for me and this is my 541st record.
"I love this album... i don't understand a word of Brazilian Portuguese... but, i feel every artistic movement of this record... Elis Regina is a great singer... the opening title track is a great way to open it up... and it goes on with great vocals... she reminds me a bit of Astrud Gilberto... but, the music underneath is crazy... some excellent playing in the world/samba/bossanova/jazz world... "Tiro Ao Alvaro" is a really nice duet, with the gravelly voiced counter part vocal by Adoniran Barbosa... which is definitely throwback bossanova... "So Deus E Quem Sabe" is a sophisticated Smooth Jazz slow jam... her vocal reminds me a bit of a young Peggy Lee on it... "O Que Foi Feito Devera" is a really cool duet with Milton Nascimento, in what i would call "Brazilian Modern Pop Music"... but, really a sophisticated and complex arrangement... this was no fly by night recording... lolol... "Outro Cais" is a dreamy, unique song done with Lo Borges... "Rebento" is a piano torch song... sung to perfection... as good as anything by Nina Simone, for example... and in that vein... "O Trem Azul" sounds like a Vince Guaraldi type jazz song... every song on this is worth listening to over and over... it closes with the upbeat Samba song "Aprendendo A Jogar"... crazy man... crazy... Five STARS..."
maybe wanna listen again different day 5/5
Bockt, erinnert mich an japanischen citypop 4/5
EN: Absolutely amazing. I don't label it as perfect, some songs are unnecessary, but it's certainly a masterpiece.
Had no clue what I was getting into. Super enjoyable jams, tasty jazz licks, sweet beautiful voice. 10/10
Beautiful, it put me in a lovely breezy (ha!) mood.
Funky and refreshing with incredible vocals, this record almost feels like a live interpretation of a video game soundtrack. It’s so smooth and pleasing while being technically complex. What a fantastic find - a must have on vinyl.
okay, this one confused me initially. the website said that this album released in 1978, but after searching on google, turns out that this is actually a posthumous compilation album, the songs taken from two different album releases. now onto the music. super pretty progressive pop music that whisks you away. brazilian music always seems to delight me with how positive and complex the grooves are, the singers happily bouncing between every note and chord. it's a very entertaining and lighthearted jazzy pop album that blends hints of samba, bossa nova and choro.
Nice variety in moods. Some songs kinda funky like Aprendendo A Jogar. Some more dreamy like the title track (that was magical!). O Que Foi Feito Devera was very cool
One of the most incredible voices ever.
Smooth as silk and warm as a day at the beach. A classic from Brazil.
Incredible. Truly great artist with an amazing voice, and a top tier band playing at their best. Great tunes and killer arrangements, will be returning to this one!
A very excellent album overall. Elis Regina is a skilled enough performer that the songs come across well even to me, speaker of no Portuguese. Favorite track: "O Trem Azul"
Wow was not expecting any of this. Move very slightly over Nina Simone, I need to deep dive this discography too. Instant classic
Great vibes Latin coffee house smooth jazz. Not my vibe but massive and influential.
For some reason I couldn’t find this on Spotify as it’s titled here. However, I did find a self-titled album from 2002 that has all of the same tracks (minus one), but in a different order. The missing song, “O Que Foi Feito Devera”, I listened to separately. All that being said, I loved this. Excellent vibes all around.
BEST ONE SO FAR
Excellent album. Excellent vocals. Definitely need to dig more into her catalog. Albums like this are why I started this project. 5 stars all day
Damn this has no right to go as hard as it does
FAVO: Vento de Maio, Sai Dessa, Tiro Ao Alvaro, So Deus e Quem Sabe, O que foi feito Devera, Saudade Eterna, O trem Azul, A Prendendo a jogar
What a vibe! Every time I thought this was less than perfect, I was gripped again. Beautiful!
Carregado de emoção e imposição vocal destemida.
extreeeem gut. Vor allem für Abendstimmung. Bin richtig begeistert
Awesome music. Could groove to this all day.
Pleasant surprise

Love this album. New discovery. Loved the duets.

Another Great Foreign album. A pleasure to listen to.
I LOVE BRAZIL WEIRD. This is the perfect level for me. Every measure a surprise, everything easy to listen to. But I’m not gonna lie, I had my music stank face on for… pretty much the entire album. Such insane musicians! How is everything so tight? This sounds excellent, excellent. I think I hearted every song. Thank you 1001 Albums for making me realize I love weird Brazil. A lot. 5/5
What a fun album with a variety of styles, moods, tempos and emotions. Would recommend to anyone!
Wholly unexpected five stars from me! It looks like this is actually a mistake on the original author's end, where he added a rare compilation album, but I loved this one and can't wait to revisit it over and over (plus it got me to accidentally listen to another album titled "Vento De Maio", by Nara Leao, which I also ended up loving, although this is stronger). I checked out the lyrics where I could find them. Overall a great combination of fun and funky instruments, great singing that fit the lyrics and mood super well each time, and really amazing lyrics!!! Sorry to make this long but here are my thoughts, song by song: Vento de Maio: Interesting musically and lyrically! Combination of genres and moods, intriguing imagery, and the nice inclusion of the wind instruments to emphasize the idea of the wind of May. Sai Dessa: Wish it were longer!! I want this to be a 6 minute track. SOOO so fun and funky and playful. I didn’t expect this!! Tiro Ao Alvaro: Really fun stuff going on with the lyrics, puns and intentional mispronunciations (according to a very helpful man on lyricstranslate.com)! I also wish this one were longer, and that I could watch people dance to it. Wow!!! So Deus E Quem Sabe: That slightly sleazy and orchestral 70s vibe.. I really like her voice on this one. Very strong song… has me closing my eyes and snapping my fingers. O Que Foi Feito Devera: The lyrics blew me away on this one. Loooove the part where Milton Nascimento comes in. Insane insane insane song. GOD!!! Nova Estacao: Nice song! Not my favorite on the album so far but still pleasant and smooth. Saudade Eterna: GIRL GET UP!! Very fun little song. Groovy.. has me dancing in my seat.. Outro Cais: Nice lyrics and singing, just not my preferred vibe. Rebento: Really beautiful lyrics, not my preferred vibe either but it is a very good type of song for that specific genre/vibe, if that makes sense. It does a great job of what it wants to do. I think a lot of 70s female singer-songwriter fans would go nuts for this song. O Trem Azul: Love the imagery here in the lyrics.. the sultry and soulful backing.. her voice.. just a really well put together song. That build up with her wailing and the horns in the final couple minutes… so so good. O Medo De Amar E O Medo De Ser Livre: Love the guitar on this one (and the cowbell!), a nice groove. The songs on this album will sometimes throw in really great imagery that hits in just a few words or lines. Great stuff. Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus: Perfectly delivered and preached Gospel-soul song.. damn! I wasn’t expecting this but it’s so well done. Aprendendo A Jogar: Super funky and groovy, love this one – the kind of song you want to sing along to as you hear it for the first time! Thank you commenters on Genius Lyrics who helped me understand the cool interplay of the common sayings used in the lyrics. Great stuff!!
Makes me want to smoke a cigarette in a Moroccan nightclub in 1978 and then have an affair at the discothequé
I love Brazilian music.
No doubt a 5/5 I genuinely have never heard anything that so elegantly mixes the smoothness and playfulness of music. This is the best album I have ever heard, and I will always remember the first time I heard this glorious album.
That was the best, most approachable jazz album I have ever had the pleasure of hearing. Will definitely be putting into rotation.
This is delightfully weird to my ears. I can see why she was a superstar in Brazil.
Lovely jazz, lots of funky influences from earlier decades
great album on non-english language
Wow this was fantastic😍
AQUI É BRASIL. What a voice

I dig bossa Nova but am not well versed enough to appreciate.
Some bossa nova, some samba, some elements of funk, jazz, even disco. I'd not heard of Elis Regina before and wasn't sure what to expect, but this turned out to be wonderful. It was a tuneful party of an album that made me wish for warmer months. Makes me wish I knew Portuguese though, so I could really follow along, and it's a shame Elis Regina was lost so young. This is one of those more left-field albums I think I'll seek out on vinyl honestly. Favourite: O Medo De Amar É O Medo De Ser Livre
This album just flows perfectly. There wasn't a time where I though "Maybe that part shouldn't be there" or "This goes for way too long". A solid 4.5 stars from me, so I give it 5 stars :)
I listened to it on shuffle :,( But anyways this slaps hard! I like that it welcomes me back to this project! 5/5
Molt bon disc, Elis Regina és genial!!
This album was awesome! I'm sad that it's not on my streaming service. When I saw that this was samba and jazz, I knew I was gonna end up liking it. My favourite songs were Aprendendo a Jogar, O Medo de Amar é o Medo de Ser Livre, and Calcanhar de Aquiles.
First impression: wow, this first song has me hooked right from the start! This album is super tight; really jazzy and funky, polished production, and just tons of great little musical moments and riffs. I'm pretty blown away; first song was a 5/5, and the rest of the record backed it up. Last track is such a banger!
I am not well versed in Spanish at all, but I thought that this album was awesome. So full of energy and passion; you can tell the artist genuinely cares about what she does here (and is good at it).
Such energy and emotion, I love it !
This is breath in album form.
Beautiful bossa nova there was seamless transitions between the tracks, absolutely loved it! Her voice was amazing, and I loved all the tracks!
Yooooooo this absolutely did not need to be as good as it is. Incredible and the best album I’ve encountered for the first time on this little album of the day quest!
This mystery of an album is absolutely beautiful.
Incredible! I have never heard of this artist, I have never heard of Brazilian jazz or whatever this is. But the music is just great. And the singer is incredible even though I do not understand the language she sings in, and the music just has a great jazz punk rock fusion going on. Like a cosmic gumbo.
Graaande Elis!
I love it when you grow fonder with each listen. I didn't get enough time with this today, but I made my mother and son listen to it, and that made three generations who enjoyed it. I was so happy to be introduced to Elis Regina today. I look forward to spending lots more time with her. My first favorite today had to be "Só Deus É Quem Sabe." Really took me to a dreamland.
Not familiar with the artist at all. First listen for the album and it was wonderful!! I found myself dancing and smiling a lot as I listened. So much fun!
Wow. This is something very special. Wow. She is soulful beyond belief, channeling something that the rest of us aren't in touch with. I adored every song but Rebento stopped me in my tracks. Tremendous!
Buenísimo, siempre es bueno escucharlo.
ICONIC
Again never heard of this artist but loved Brazilian jazz tunes.
Bossa Nova 💖
wow! I was expecting like regular Bossa nova but this was way cooler. Beautiful vocals and nutty music. 10
Really cool and definitely worth coming back to for another listen. 9
Fuck yeah. O Medo De Amar O Medo De Ser Livre is an absolute tune and a half. Whole album 10/10 tight, funky, big lead breaks, huge voice and perfectly paced. Aprehendo a Jogar and Sai Dessa also biggies. I wish I spoke Portuguese
Ok, so this album (or what I assume is this album, because I couldn't find this album, but I found an album that has this song) is incredible. I am totally getting this shit on vinyl and will be cooking and hosting people to this shit.
fenomenal
So dope! What a fun trip. It's definitely got a standard latin music vibe, but also a dreamy jazzy breathy fun thing going on. The whole album reminds me of that one song by Stereolab...Rainbow Conversation.
Incrível. Um clássico para ouvir muitas vezes!
Does this album fucking exist? Give it to me fucking straight. I guess the bigger question is, why is a weird, wrongly dated reissue of Regina’s last major work before her untimely death the only album of hers on this list? Pisses me off. But I digress. I don’t know Portuguese. But I know melody, and the melodies on this are fantastic. So are the textures, the grooves, the vocals, the instrumentation, the musicality… it’s beautiful. It’s cool. I don’t wanna talk too much today. I’m tired. I wish more songs stood out, but it’s really good either way. Love it. 9.0/10
hey this was pretty cool! It reminds me of something you'd hear on a Persona soundtrack. Great rhythms with some lovely vocals behind them. Had me grooving for most of my listen.
Fun album with interesting arrangements. Nothing I’d consider essential but I enjoyed my time with it!
These songs are fantastic! The vocal performances are dynamic and the instrumentals have a great ebb and flow and the bass in some of the more fusion/disco songs in the latter half is downright nasty. Unfortunately, this is a compilation which disqualifies it from being a 5 in my eyes. But damn if Brazilian music isn’t fun.
Builds slowly, but the train is barreling along by track 4 and never lets up. Well worth the patience. Amazing voice, definitely a fun discovery today. Dig the MPB genre blending of vocal jazz. Kept things interesting and surprising while yet super comfortable and chill this aging jazz cat. Favorites: "O Medo de Amar É o Medo de Ser Livre", "Apendendo a Jogar" Also, I didn't think I would ever see an artist discography that named more albums after themselves than Peter Gabriel.
Made me wanna sit at an outside bar with fancy drinks and string lights.
Music that's not in English for once! (This list is seriously lacking music in other languages, especially Spanish, as the only "Latin" albums I've got so far have been in Portuguese). I had no idea what to expect, especially considering this is not what I usually listen. But I was pleasantly surprised from the very first track. Such a joyful and amazing album. 4/5, but I can see myself giving Vento De Maio a 5/5 in the future with more listens.
Nice! And so good to have - once again - something else than an average UK/USA album.
The voice is impeccable and blends well with the smooth jazz
Wow, this is great (even if I did have to hunt all over the internet to find the album). Classic "good" bossa nova vibes, and that woman can really sing. Great collection of tracks too, everything seems "in place" and similar mood
This album is pretty great, there are some really beautiful songs and other more lively tracks, all very pleasant and jazzy. I've loved listening to this album, it is really such an enjoyable album, so calmed and sometimes more playful. I've found it quite interesting, even if some songs haven't been much of my taste.
Heerlijke Brazil-samba-bossa-pop-funk, summervibes!
Fun, funky and energetic.
Que beleza
her name sound like scooby doo trying to say jealous vagina god i love bossa nova so much. love the subtle funk influences too, really great loved it
More MPB always please Fave Tracks: Sai Dessa, O Trem Azul, Calcanhar de Aquiles 4/5
So cool to hear different versions of bossa and Brazilian music that aren’t the typical Jobim stuff.
Would buy
Really beautiful and peaceful collection of songs. A good combo with tea and a grey day. Likes: Sai Dessa; Saudade Eterna; Rebento; Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus
It’s a compilation which is sorta cheating but oh well! This was a tonic to a very grey day… so much so it brought the sun out!
Despite the fact that it's have very little idea what this lady is singing about, listening to this album has been such a pleasurable experience, from the bewitching, mysterious opener, through the fun musical arrangements of tracks like Sai Dessa and Aprendendo A Jogar, energetically hectic numbers such as Saudade Eterna and the gorgeous but woefully short Outro Cais, 1001 throws out another hidden gem for us. Will definitely check out the Elis Regina back catalogue. A high 4 stars.
Before this list I didn’t even know what exactly bossa nova was but apparently I’m a big fan. I’ve had two bossa nova albums so far and loved them both.
enjoyed this, confused by compilation
Gonna' have to agree with a few of you here: shame on the editors of this book for not bothering to find a studio album to include if they wanted to highlight this artist. The entry in the book doesn't even seem to be aware of this blunder. Things that make you go "hmmm". Couple'a real jams on here. "Calcanhar De Aquiles " and "Aprendendo Jogar" particularly stood out. She goes hard sometimes. Very neat. Not really something I can see myself reaching for but glad I got to hear it.
Very enjoyable album from a very talented artist
Really groovy
Man, some of the cats on this can really play
Very fun! Like the best parts of city pop / jazz with beautiful vocals I couldn't understand
I've never properly listened to foreign language music like this before. The production is amazing and the atmosphere created is awesome!
This was so good. My favorite non-UK foreign album. Agree with another comment that it has a very Japanese city pop sound to it. 4/5
Surprisingly very good. Didn’t think I would enjoy this
If this list has taught me anything, it's that Brazil had the most incredible music scene in the 60s and 70s. Have yet to hear a Brazilian album on this list that I didn't genuinely enjoy and I can see why so many Western acts would travel to Brazil to see what they had cooking up and draw inspiration from it. The language barrier feels real; I wish I knew just a little Portuguese to sift through the lyrical content. But the music itself and Elis' voice are both beautiful.
Kind of tough to find in that there is a similarly talented album from the 60s by another female Brazilian artist who also passed away young. This is a comp which further obscures it but now I want to find all the source albums that these songs were from because, like every other Brazilian album that's appeared so far, this was amazing.
This is good!
Cool samba/bossa nova album. I'll probably go back to this one. 4/5
Really enjoyed this, lovely chilled sounds
Nice music for sex
Yo, I enjoyed this a lot. While I haven’t heard of Elis Regina before, I was familiar with Lo Borges and Milton Nascimento. So it wasn’t very surprising to see both their names pop up here on this diverse, joyful and thoughtfully composed record. It has an impeccable flow. I don’t understand a single word of Brazilian but even after a brief stint with Google Translate, the lyrics are elusive to me. But I mean, this works just brilliantly without knowledge of the words, too. Let’s say the music transcends the linguistic barrier (or to put it differently: listening to this was 100% fun).
Likable and unique on this list.
I wish the 1001 Albums list was more like this - some of the best music from around the world. This is completely new to me and not my usual cup of tea, but includes some great songs that shine even through the language barrier. At times it even gives me a slight City Pop vibe. Faves: Tiro Ao Álvaro, O Que Foi Feito Devera (De Vera), Aprendendo A Jogar
aprendendo a jogar
Nice
The reason I signed up. To listen to things I’ve never heard before. This is incredible. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What a voice!! I really enjoyed this one. It was definitely a nice change of pace and was great the whole way through. Favorite songs were Vento de Maio and Aprendendo a Jogar.
I'm starting to think it might be impossible for Brazilian jazz to be bad.
okkkkkk
I really enjoyed this collection of songs. It was hard to find the specific album, but after googling it, I was able to piece together what I believe to be the album. Elis's music was interesting, even though I don’t know any Portuguese, but I could definitely see myself listening to this style of music.
Entero weno. Sorprendido.
Can I understand any of the words? No! Does it matter? No! But lemme tell ya, great vibes and her voice is amazing. This is the kind of music discovery I was hoping for on this site.
> the Beatles This album doesn't even exist on her discography any where. Apparently it's a compilation put together later. I found, as best I can tell, a version to listen to. Pretty great.
Beautiful, I want to listen to it on a rainy day in a slightly sorrowful mood
Enjoyed it enough to continue listening to other albums once this was finished.
I really liked this. Especially the Nasciemento cover towards the end. I'll definitely listen again.
this was really pleasant
What a delightful record! Like a proto-Sade with a Bossa nova swing. Great energy, effortlessly smooth, incredible performances by all, and the production sounds way more current than the year it was released
Superb. Not an artist I had ever heard. Wonderful vocals, funk inflected rhythms and just made me want to dance.
Some great funky jazz fusion. Wasn’t even sure what language it was but it didn’t matter. Very close to 5 stars if not for a couple of the slower tracks.
I love her voice and enjoyed being introduced to Elis. This is not something I would have found or listened to on my own, and exactly why I'm along for the adventure.
Love MPB!!! More my jam to play in the background.
Vento De Maio was good fun. With me not understanding Portuguese, it was effectively an instrumental album, but one I enjoyed a fair amount. I probably won't play it often, but I should remember to put it on every now and again. A low four.
sets the perfect mood
Fully unfamiliar. I love hearing a new-to-me bossa nova singer. I don't know if this is canon Latin music, which is what the premise of this list implies, but it's the kind of record someone who love it will press on you, which is the best kind of recommendation.
See, this is the kind of discovery I was hoping from this exercise instead of 200 Neil Young and Dylan lps.
Really cool! Have never heard of this, and difficult to find the album. But great.
Every song has a complex instrumental mix. And really, isn't that all listeners are looking for? Plenty of exoticism, of textural and harmonic oddity. Tiro Ao Álvaro whirls by you at lightning speed, with the pep of S&G's Cecilia mixed with the chord progression of a jazz bebop chart. Throughout the album, it's so cool to hear the "old" interwoven with the "new". In many tracks, you get a distinctively "old-fashioned" production sound, in particular with the vocals, strings, and (simple) percussion. But then the sound breaks into something much more modern and daring. The opener, Vento De Maio, is a perfect example of this back-and-forth. O Que Foi Feito Devera (De Vera) kind of does the same thing: the break-in with those jangling acoustic guitars and hand(?)-percussion adds so much complexity and modernity to an otherwise old-fashioned chart. Also, the female-male harmonising is great (when it isn't done in octaves) – I'd love to hear more of that. The album really lets loose in the second half. The soft, relaxed Rebento, the guitar shredding at the end of O Medo De Amar É O Medo De Ser Livre... heck, the slow yet massive rise in texture of Se Eu Quiser Falar Com Deus is easily worth the 40-minute wait even if you somehow disliked the rest of the album. I wish that track was the concluding one instead of the much goofier Aprendendo A Jogar. Seeing the number of 1- and 2-stars reviews floored me. Do you guys really think so low of this near-objectively good music? Must lyrics be in English for you to appreciate the sound? (People will say this is terrible and then turn around and give Throbbing Gristle or Public Enemy a glowing review.) I would be tempted to give this 5 stars in protest, except this is technically a compilation rather than a studio album. Because of that, Vento De Maio's inclusion feels a little ill-justified. But 1 star? Come off it. 4/5 Key tracks: Tiro Ao Álvaro, O Trem Azul, O Medo De Amar É O Medo De Ser Livre
Found this one on YT. Apparently it's a posthumous compilation, so it's not exactly cohesive, but I enjoyed it. Great vocals, fun rhythms, and kind of funky, kind of bluesy.
Deze was echt toppie sfeertje
haunting & powerful and beautiful, would love to hear as movie backing track
took a little effort to even find a place to listen to this, as this isn't on Spotify (not in my region anyway). maybe it's because this is a posthumous compilation and not an album? thankfully i found it on YouTube, though the tracklist is in a different order and there are a few additional songs. my rating is based on the tracklist on RYM, but i suppose the rating would be slightly different if i rated the additional songs Aprendendo a jogar - 5/5 Rebento - 2/5 O trem azul - 5/5 Tiro ao álvaro - 3/5 Nova estação - 4/5 Se eu quiser falar com Deus - 5/5 Vento de maio - 5/5 Só Deus é quem sabe - 4/5 Sai dessa - 4/5 O que foi feito devera (De Vera) - 5/5 Average score: 4.2/5 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ never heard of this vocalist before as my exposure to Brazilian music is limited, but her voice is beautiful. definitely up there with Astrud Gilberto i think
Hard to find but worth looking for this one. Thank you to whoever suggested the YouTube Playlist. This seems to be a posthumous compilation so it has a couple different modes. I got some Amy wine house type lounge music. I got some almost Japanese city pop with the Latin flair. And I had the more normal and expected Latin idk bossinova. And all of it is great. There seems to be a whole career here so im not sure what came where but every mode is excellent. I had to go back and find the songs I liked on their respective albums. I couldnt just never hear them again. And that says alot. Its just great music and I had so much fun with it from start to finish.
Yay more Brazilians, hmm another compilation. I'm assuming there will be better 60/70s Brazilian music later on the list as this is not my favourite type. Still very good though, lacks some of the chaos of Novos Baianos, or beauty of Clube da Esquina. 4 Heard before? Some Owned: No 47/188 (25%) Will I get: Maybe
Really enjoyed this. I don't speak the language, so it's hard to judge to much. But I liked everything I heard.
Hell yeah, I thought this was gonna be some old-timey bullshit but I am presently surprised by how poppy and powerful it sounds.
I have kind of fallen in love with this genre over the course of this list.
I’m not confident I listened to the right album, but what I heard was very bright and fun. Brazilian music keeps hitting time after time.
Surprisingly, this is a very solid album musically. I thoroughly enjoyed listening to it and highly recommend it.
This was more enjoyable than I was expecting for a world album. Reading the context of the artist and her early death makes the album more significant. I enjoyed the funky beats and layers of sound.
Such a pleasure,
Really dig it, lovely listen, some great funk sounds in here too. Would love to revisit
Kinda vibey?! Stand-outs - Nova Estação - Saudade Eterna
Wonderful vibes. What is it about Brazilian music that just feels so cozy and intimate and warm? I love this. FOUR STARS
I'm surprised I've never heard of her. It's quite good and I'll certainly listen to more albums from her!
I love her
This was quite good considering I knew nothing of the album, artist, or genre. Good listen.
This was enjoyable and the vocals were great.
Hermoso album. Me lo guardo. Tope de gama. 8/10
This is great
Got a pop in it
Fun, sounded really good, full of energy, couldn't understand a lick of it.
favs: aprendendo a jogar

4.0
Nice album, I like the chill samba sound and she has a great voice. If I could understand the lyrics it would probably be a 5, not her fault but I just can’t connect with it on that super deep level.
Upbeat Relaxing Cooking music Makes your hips move Great vocals
3.5. Surprised how much I enjoyed
8/10. Listened to the album Essa Mulher since this one was not on Spotify.
Something different and upbeat and original. Of course the guy who wrote the list would screw up which one to use. I want more of this, though I know I won't get it. Not something I search out, but definitely fun!
GAS! Holy shit I loved it so this is one of the better new finds in a while. No surprise from the og waters of March woman. 4.5/5 I would say
I didn't understand a word she said, but her voice was nice and it was a nice arrangement.
Pretty good.
Honestly really liked this.
good attitude
Really enjoyed this, funkier than I was expecting in addition to the jazz & great vocals.
Smooth, gorgeous vocals.
Italian jazz feel. Easy to the ear
For me not knowing the words, I thought this album was good.
This rocked - definitely the best album where I didn't understand the words being spoken. Bass playing was 10/10. It was such a funky groove throughout. Great vibes. If you're good with language barriers - this album is your JAM
This is kind of bangin actually. 8/10 02/08/25
I had never heard of this artist, but this album is an absolute banger. This kind of discovery is why I love this project!
this was amazing!!! super funky and super fun throughout. didn’t love the blues tracks as much
Day 48 First listen- So so glad I found this gorg album, smooth and scrumptious. (4.5/5)
Great!
4/5
Showing my ignorance here but this had a real city pop vibe in some tracks that I really loved. Makes me upset there’s not more foreign albums because this was a really pleasant surprise
Some decent stereo mixing and production. It wasn't working for me initially, but as I listened the mixing was really taking me away. Somewhat hypnotic. Her voice also gradually grew on me.
Beautiful, colorful, lovely Elis.
Really enjoyed this album. This is my first real exposure to a full length Latin project, I found it really enjoyable. The vocals are great, instrumentals are just as good. If only I spoke Portuguese to understand what she was talking about.
Really great vocal performance over a surprisingly wide variety of well-performed instrumentals. 4.0/5.0: Great
Beautiful collection of songs, I think this is exactly my type of vibe. It's got a bit of every mood, slower songs work great with Elis' beautiful voice, and when the rhythm picks up you just wanna 🕺 It's got some parallels to City Pop as one reviewer noted, but that Brazilian flavor really makes this its own thing. Great vibes 🇧🇷 Standouts: Só Deus É Quem Sabe • O Trem Azul • O Medo De Amar É O Medo De Ser Livre • Aprendendo A Jogar
smooooth 3.75
beautiful album!! i need to get into mpb
It was good finally some good music
Banger album. Just look up Elis (1980) and you'll find what you're looking for. Unless you're on Spotify, the expanded version seems to have released in 2002.
Very interesting
This is the first Brazilian album I've ever heard in my life, and I was pleasantly surprised with how much I loved this Samba saga, despite the fact I don't know Spanish fluently. Favorite Track: "Calcanhar devAquiles".
Really reminded me of Japanese city pop, absolutely duh this album
Toe-tappin wide-brim-hattin vibrant Latin tunes. This isn't Mexican restaurant music. This is ADVANCED Mexican Restaurant Music !!
Brazilian one :-) , but I just loved "Tiro Ao Álvaro"
Amaaazing album! I really enjoyed this one. Some Santana-esque parts <3. It's a 4.5 for me, definitely worth more listens
Cool
This absolutely pangs in places. That is what the kids say now right? Pangs.
8.5/10
I believe the compilation is; Vento de Maio, Sai Dessa, Tiro Ao Álvaro, Só Deus E Quem Sabe, O Que Foi Feito Devera, Nova Estação, Calcanhar de Aquiles, Outro Cais, Rebento, O Trem Azul, O Medo de Amar e o Medo de Ser Livre, Se Eu Quisar Falar Com Deus, Aprendendo a Jogar. The official one isn’t on Apple Music don’t know about Spotify. If it is, 😔👌🔥
She sounded like Basha. Made me very nostalgic.
Reading about Vento De Maio makes you realize that it’s a strange inclusion - it’s essentially compilation. That being said, I really enjoyed Elis Regina’s vocals and the compositions. Exciting yet strange record.
This was a great album mixed with latin jazz, and some city pop/AOR vibes. I had a lot of fun listening to this one. The only reason I’m giving it a 4 and not a 4.5, is because it is a compilation and not a true album. So even though this was a fantastic listen, it really shouldn’t be allowed on this list.
Beautiful
This was really enjoyable to listen to while doing things!
This is a little too upbeat for me. I love MBP, but I think the 70s hit much better for me. Started her other album Elis and Tom and I think I might give that a 5. This is a mid to low 4 for me.
very fun and funky,, i like it. reminds me of the old music my parents play when they get nostalgic except if we were from brazil and not bosnia. however it reminds me of this dude I used to go out with way back in first year, which was an overall strange time in my life so -1 point.
Very nice, good vibes
Couldn’t find the album on Spotify, but listened to other music of hers. Absolutely beautiful.
80/100. A fantastic compilation, showcasing her incredible voice and emotional delivery. Even without understanding Portuguese, the vibe and energy of the music come through beautifully, making it a captivating and moving listen.
don't get why this is missing from everything but spotify
Not bad, Miss Elis! I like your sound, and want to hear more from you.
Fun bossa nova, jó lemez
3.5+/5
I don't usually give non-engligh language albums 4s but I liked this
Smooth, easy listening. Not my usual stuff, but glad I got to listen to it
Nice portuguese vibe 3.5
reminds me a lot of city pop
Catchy album with some cool grooves, 3.5/5, really enjoyed the last song.
It seems like Robert Dimery let a compilation slip through. Maybe at the time of writing, it was difficult to find many albums from Elis Regina outside of Brazil. This is an interesting collection, where samba beats blend with rock and smooth jazz. I definitely enjoyed some songs more than others, particularly the collaboration with the amazing Milton Nascimento. I definitely feel like there's a lot more going on here than I can fully appreciate. There certainly feels like there's an intensity to the music that reflects back on her short life, filled with drugs, alcohol, failed marriages and the threat of imprisonment from the military dictatorship.
This is cool, especially that first song. The energy is a bit all over, but a worthy inclusion.
Fuck yeah, non-white people music! This was actually a really fun album, a bummer it's not more readily accessible on streaming platforms.
Really liked the voice, the album itself was enjoyable and fun to listen to while working. The vibe was mellow but rythmic, had me bopping my head along. Favorite song was: Saudade Eterne 7/10
I've probably never listened to a Brazilian album before. "Sai Dessa" has forced me to start grooving in my desk chair. This is a weird observation and I'm snitching on myself a little, but this sounds a LOT like the type of jazzy female singer songs that end up on anime show intros. "Nova Estacao" has the same energy. I love it. There's some fun xylophone (? or vibes?) in the background that are great. "A Estrada E O Violeiro" had a great feature. It was a lot of fun to listen to. When the album finished it autoplayed "Rebento". The vocals remind me a lot of Edith Piaf, who I also love. This was a great album, I liked it a lot. Not every song was a sound I love hearing, but it was all at least enjoyable and often great. 7/10
Listened to this lounging on the roof at work, it was warm and lovely. There was so much going on with this album surprisingly, music kept changing up in interesting ways.
I couldn’t find the exact album but I love her
The songs are fun and interesting. Lyrically, I have no idea, but the melodies don't detract from the song, so I can only imagine that the lyrics would have to be totally abysmal to make the tunes less enjoyable.
Just a beautiful collection of songs. I didn't listen to elis much, except her work with tom jobim, although I am a big Brazilian music guy. Was having a hard time finding this compilation, but glad I did. Wonderful performances of great songs, good vibes over all. Funky and tropical. A more western side to club de esquina. I like it a lot. Its in my library immediately!
If Katamari Damacy was made in Brazil.
No idea what she was saying but I loved it
An excellent album! Really enjoyable jazzy samba. The songs/artists that popped up after the album were also great.
Not sure if this is an actual album or what but either way thank you for introducing this awesome artist to me.
great Vocals
7.5/10. This is an interesting and mysterious album. It's difficult to find consistent information about this album. Regardless, its music is lovely!!! :)
Mr. Dimery gets 5 points taken off his Sin List for introducing me to this superb music, which I most likely would never have encountered anywhere else. However, he gets 2 Sin Points right back for including a random-ass compilation album instead of one of the many beloved, real studio albums by Elis Regina. You were so very close, Robert.
Good vibes
Good sound. Good voice.
DUDE, I'm 2 songs through this album and BOTH TRACKS have stopped me in my tracks within the first 10 seconds 🤯🤯 This shit bangs... I didn't have time to record my thoughts whilst listening in full, tonight's dog wash night and I was reep cleaning that, but DAMN if this isn't the mint jams of Latin America! Really tight rhythm section, really crazy good vocal lead performance, just Casiopea meets a really nice helping of Masayoshi Takanaka meets Brazil. Already know that I'm coming back to this album, and potentially more of this artists Discography. Loved it 😎😎
Liked this more than I thought I would.
A música brasileira sempre vai ser a melhor
