EDGY PROG FOR EDGY FROGS
Pretty fun, good listen. Twilight zone was fav so far.
Loved it. Lyrics are deceptively simple but still very relatable. I want a copy!
Ive always loved Rush but only ever listened to their Greatest Hits - this album absolutely upheld my opinion of them. Brilliant vocals, guitars and drums throughout, and the sci-fi theming fits perfectly. 8/10
Rush always gives me a RUSH!
8 - solid listen, first song is a long/epic then good rest of album
This was very.... ✨standard✨, but not dislikeable! I don't know, perhaps I am just basic.
Rush is pound for pound one of the greatest bands in rock. These 3 dudes are super talented. As a bass player myself, Geddy is certainly an inspiration. But for all the accolades, for whatever reason I just don't listen to them that often. 2112 is often considered their masterpiece, but it's a little bloated to my ears. I generally prefer the next 2 or 3 albums after this one. I'm gonna give it 3.5 and round to 4.
I feel like I've been bulied into liking Rush; because I always loved rock music, because I love prog, because I'm canadien! People in movies love them! Your cool uncle loves them! They're SO GOOD AT INSTRUMENT! I heard many a Rush album, up to 1982, I've heard them all! And most of them I don't care for! Hemispheres and Moving Picutures are great tho. And this one too, mostly because of the 20 minutes title track. That's it.
Interesting overall, a little slow in the beginning. A low 4 but that’s being generous.
Another classic. Again, not my fave Rush record(I have a couple others in line before this one), but it’s good.
Ahhh, Rock Band and 2112. My arms still hurt from drumming the whole suite. Not sure if I prefer this over Moving Pictures. No songs favorites (bc I love 2112 but I've gotta be on the mood for the epicness). 4/5
I didn’t appreciate Rush until I went to a concert. They blew me away.
Probably a 4.5. An impressive album, classic for a reason. Not 100% to my tastes (needs more bops!), but, like... it's 2112, cmon.
Cool rock music
music about music is deeply embarrassing; especially when it tries to present a guitar as some kind of magical or alien device. music inspired by ayn rand is both deeply embarrassing and morally reprehensible. and yet 2112 rules there are a number of things that don't work here (that orientalist jingle that plays a few times during A Passage to Bangkok in particular) and the album unfortunately peaks at the transition from Overture to Temples of Syrinx but this is still excellent Rush. would it have been better if the whole album committed to the 2112 rock opera thing? probably yeah. none of the "normal" tracks on the back half compete with the best of Rush - there's no Limelight or The Spirit of Radio or even Fly by Night here in the back half - but the last two tracks in particular have some beautiful guitar work. it's weird, Rush is a five of a band but looking at individual albums I think they're all fours? except moving pictures. funny how a long career can work out that way. anyway it was nice to listen to this a few times today and think about my dad.
Had a lot of time for this and his vocals are some of my favourite from this list so far, especially for a band lead singer rather than a solo artist. Didn't blow me away but it did keep me hooked and musically, of course it's very interesting.
I like prog
icon
I like this one way more than I thought I would. Generally not a big Rush fan. I don’t hate them, just think they’re over hyped. This probably hit my mood just right.
Great. Except for the Chinese part on the second song.
Really enjoyed the craziness. Not what I was expecting.
Rush siempre se ha caracterizado para mí como un grupo que cuenta historias a través de sus canciones. Me encanta
Classic but they have some much better albums
1 extra star for good guitar playing (especially on Tears)
I have listened to this album before as I was going through Rush's discography. I really liked it the first time but the second time, I loved it! If this album was not the album that brought progressive rock to the masses, I don't know what is! 2112, the title track and song that takes up the whole first side on vinyl, is flat-out amazing! I would argue their second best epic (Xanadu is my favourite Rush epic). The story, the instrumentation, everything! Does the second side hold up? It does have the disadvantage of being just individual songs but even then, some bands would kill to have some of these songs. It's hard to think that 3 guys from Canada did all this. Amazing album! Highlights: 2112 A Passage To Bangkok The Twilight Zone Something For Nothing
chill
Rush is not my favourite prog rock band, actually, i quite often overlook them, but I don't really know why. It's solid and distinctive.
Ground breaking
Good old rock opera
Day 219 Didn’t enjoy this quite as much as Moving Pictures but still pretty terrific, especially the guitar. Highlights Twilight Zone Something for Nothing
Rush is never going to be my thing but I enjoy and appreciate most of what's going on here a great deal.
i must admit the sonics and aesthetics of Rush aren't super my bag, but so often this album leaned into a jammy quality that I just found irresistible.
not my favorite rush and rush isn't my favorite flavor of prog but still a good time!
Monster fedt. En af de helt store udgivelser indenfor prog rock.
*88 Vi er næsten helt op at dinge. Top tier content.
so sick 4.3
This is a fantastic album. It’s fun, high energy, and full of great riffs. I can’t give it 5 stars, though, because more than half the album is a 20 minute sick ass song and I can’t casually listen to that
Pretty good! It was fun to realize Gone Guru had sampled an older song.
BOMBO intro😭🙏 eigl wel best nice ngl
Neil Peart was a brilliant lyricist...but not in 1976. Everything is a little naïve here, from the "my guitar will save the world from fascism" sci-fi-fantasy of the title track to the "hey, we're singing about DRUGS" snicker of "A Passage to Bangkok". But BOY, is the music good. This is the moment when Rush decided to just go all-out and make the album they wanted rather than what their label wanted, and it turned out pretty well for them in the long term. All three musicians are in top form, and the album is packed with fantastic riffs. Geddy Lee's vocals are still in his "extremely shrill" phase, but - just like the lyrics - it gets better. It's showing its age, but it's a fantastic harbinger of what's to come.
For whatever reason I had never listened to Rush. This would be 5 stars based on side one. I don't think the songs on side two are that great, but the more I listen to it, the more I love that side one. Really great. I think I need to catch up with the rest of their discography.
Amazing album, but it felt like they could have cut the first track into it's respective tracks and then stopped there, because that's the story they were trying to tell. After that it's album filler. My rating: 4/5
Geddy Lee's voice is the only weak point of this very good album.
Another odd pick for the list. Why not Moving Pictures?
I love Rush, and Geddy on bass is an all-timer whose skill can hardly be understated, but every time I hear them all I can think of is that meme about how every Rush song is about some Wizard Who Will Shrink Your Balls or whatever. I appreciate how unapologetically dorky it is, even amongst prog rock. Like many prog rock albums, 2112 is pretty inconsistent in quality. It begins in the soaring epic of its opening Overture and then settles into somewhat middling tracks following. But overall it fits the general aesthetic of somewhat dorky loser-rock (affectionate). Fifty years later it's got that concoction that's perfect for locking in. Just as Fry says: "It's Saturday night, I have no date, A 2 Liter bottle of Shasta, and my all Rush mixtape. Lets rock. Also, this one's famously dedicated to 'the genius of Ayn Rand' and quotes passages from Anthem. So thank god Neil Peart didn't become an author because Anthem fucking sucks, both as a speculative moral fable and as prose. Not going to dock marks for it because I suppose we all make mistakes. Fav tracks: 2112, Something For Nothing
Rush's 2112 album has the amazing, epic-lengthed title track taking up one side of the album, and the other side of the album with commercial normal-lengthed hard rock. They doubled down on progressive rock (prog) after their previous album where they starting exploring prog was commercially a flop, and were at threat of being dropped from their record label, yet they doubled down and it paid off. The second side songs really didn't do much for me (except for "The Passage to Bangkok") and I believe lot of the songs purposes was only there to just please the suits and have single-ready songs just in case anything bad were to occur. Maybe this album would've been a bit better received by me if this was in an alternate reality where Rush's 2112 had only 2 entire-side-lengthed songs, maybe the title track had a part 2? Just the second side doesn't fell as sincere as the first that's all. Still a solid album, and it was a better listen than the first I listened to it. Highlight Song/s: "2112" and "The Passage to Bangkok"
I feel bad for anyone doing this list that thinks Bohemian Rhapsody is a long song. The opener is 3 and a half Bohemian Rhapsodies long. Personally, I love it. A 7-part song that takes up an entire side on a record is what Prog is all about. The hardest thing for a Prog album to do, though, is match the energy and quality of a really long opening song for the rest of its runtime and this one has mixed results. The guitar solos are still awesome and I really liked A Passage to Bangkok and Something For Nothing, but I wish they continued the story for the entire album instead of leaving it to the first song. Better yet, just pull a Jethro Tull and make a one-song album. Side B is still a bunch of really good Hard Rock songs, but nothing beats that opener.
so freaking GOOD. i'm a little biased because i've been listening to a ton of rush recently but i love a good rock opera.
I've only ever listened to Moving Pictures by Rush. So its interesting to listen to earlier work. Not quite as tight and as organised as Moving Pictures. It's the side of prog rock I can get on with a bit more than bands like Pink Floyd. It's a heavier, and theres much less man wanking over his guitar vibes..
This record was good. Vocals were kinda meh, but they had their moments. Favourite Track(s): A Passage To Bangkok, Lessons, Tears Least Favourite Track(s): 2112
Rani umalo klasik kanadskih libertarijanaca😃
This album has a great concept to it that really appealed to the youth in the 70s. I found listening to the instrumentation to be exhilarating. I was never a fan of Neal Peart's voice but it improves after thus album. They showed great courage to stick with their musical concepts despite pressure from their record company to change it.
Initially I was like oh, this album only has 6 songs that's like super short and then BOOM the first song was 20 minutes long. When I realized I actually started laughing at loud. Also, it kinda made me wish I was an old gringo man with a long beard on a cool motorbike riding in to the sun while completely dresses on leather. It was really fun. 7/10
I love Rush. They’re a huge part of my teenage years, thanks to my dear friend Sofia. She was my ride or die drummer friend with whom I would jam with almost weekly, and she absolutely idolized Neil Peart. We went to see Rush together in 2010–my first concert. We learned the 2112 overture together and would play it like a warm up before each jam session. I consequently have deep appreciation for the epic title track. It is Rush’s first foray into long-form prog rock songwriting, with Neil Peart this time providing the lyrics with a literary focus. They don’t totally nail it here like they do on later albums such as Hemispheres, but it is still an impressive endeavor with plenty of memorable moments. The B side is wonderful as well, though understandably overshadowed by that first side. I don’t even think I need to go into the musicianship on this; the godhead that is Geddy Lee, Alex Lifeson, and Neil Peart is as eternal as the father, son, and spirit. Every time I listen to this record, I am transported back to youth. It is a sweet and exquisite feeling that gives me immense gratitude for the bonds I’ve made through music, as well as for each and every opportunity to enrich my skills in the craft.
I love rush. I haven’t heard this album in probably 3 years. 2112: 8.5/10 A passage to Bangkok: 9/10 The Twilight Zone: 7/10 Lessons: 7/10 Tears: 7/10 Something for nothing: 6.5/10
My 365th album!
Genius album - a required taste, however.
My second Rush album in quick succession. I suppose this is why I'm doing this - to give a chance to music that I might otherwise dismiss. I enjoyed large parts of this. It's deeply nerdy and uncool but I can't deny that Rush are a very good band and this is a very good album.
Always been quite a fan of this. Still sounds great
Enjoyed more than moving pictures
Rush did the impossible and made an actually good prog rock album. Lyrics are kinda goofy but whatever, I had fun.
Rush – 2112 On Day 47, 2112 delivered exactly the kind of great body of work I was hoping for. The concept behind the album is handled in a very consistent way, making the whole thing feel like a cinematic experience. The production and lyrics work together to make the story sweet and engaging. While the 2112 suite was good, I found myself drawn closer to Lessons on the second half. It’s a great piece of musicianship that left me wanting to hear more. A solid 4/5.
I can appreciate the musicianship of Rush, but I cannot listen to Geddy Lee for an extended period of time. +1 for them to release an 20 minute track on a record after their labe lwas about to drop them, -1 for it being based on an Ayn Rand story.
Excellent, great to re listen after a long absence.
I was so so wrong. This rocks so hard. Will definitely be coming back to this
Classic Rush, what did you think I was going to rate it? Actually, the title track is a 5 star song, and ‘Passage to Bangkok’ is a favorite, but other tracks, not so much. This is a 4 star Rush album for me.
A cornerstone of prog rock. Face melters, weird time signatures, lyrics about a future society where music has been outlawed, an outdated and culturally wrong piece of music about Bangkok... what else do you want? "What about the voice of Geddy Lee? How did it get so high? I wonder if he speaks like an ordinary guy?" I know him and he does. Best Tracks: 2112; A Passage to Bangkok; Something For Nothing
3.5 - Good
Fantastic! Incredible!
It's not my favourite rush stuff but it's good
Oh this rocks
This is an excellent album, and one of my favorites from Rush!
Probably the best rush album, every song here is quite good and goon instrumentation throughout obviously
Finger me bum it’s rush I like this one
Great Guitar Hero memories
This album is great company to your everyday life. Whether you are walking, cooking, cleaning or working, this album helps you get through it.
Don't be afraid to give 'er
Definitely a classic Rush album. You get side 1, which is basically a mini rock opera with a science fiction theme. And then side 2 is more "typical" Rush with a group of short songs that show off their ability to rock. If you love Rush, this is one of their classics for sure.
Some great classic rock music and awesome vocalist. Really enjoyed a little car headbang to this one!

Album #39 Rush: 2112 One of my earliest memories of discovering music was searching for the top ten songs of all time on TheTopTens, which was a website that I treated as scripture as a kid. Most of the top ten wasn’t too surprising to me, even as a kid who didn’t know much music: Queen, John Lennon, and Michael Jackson. But one name stood out to me, I don’t particularly know why, maybe due to its name just being a series of numbers, or the undeniably tacky cover seeming out of place, but 2112 by Rush caught my eye. Knowing what I now know about diehard Rush fans, I’m not surprised that the song got boosted as high as it did on that site, yet at the time, the reviews talking about the technical wonder that was this song really did intrigue me. So naturally I went to check it out, and to my dismay it was over 20 minutes, a concept which was so foreign to me at the time that I couldn’t even understand how someone could listen to a song for that long. Though as a Canadian, Rush were never too far from me, and years later, through discovering Moving Pictures, I finally delved into Rush’s catalogue, and of course, 2112. The song does live up to its reputation and completely warrants its length. Rush has always sounded like music from the future, even today, which is technically the future from when the music was released; it still holds this magical quality. If you don’t like the title track, however, you simply won't like this album, as not only is it half the length of the entire album, but it is also definitely the best song here. The supporting songs are still some gems and do enough to ensure that the title track is on an album worthy of it. Though it isn’t my favourite Rush album, or song for that matter, 2112 is definitely the most important album for Rush as it established their sound and set them off on a run of albums that would make them legends. Best Songs: 2112, The Twilight Zone, Tears Worst Song Passage To Bangkok Score Out of 10: 8
My jam
Introduction track is really good
Yes it's self-indulgent. That's pretty much mandatory for prog. I like prog, so I see it as a good thing. Side A is one of the best prog tracks ever even if the story is weird. A Passage to Bangkok is great too, but the rest of side B is weak. Moving Pictures is better.
It's Rush, so of course I enjoyed giving this a whirl, even if it isn't among my favourites within their canon. There's just the right blend of goofiness, technicality and catchiness going on here, and for me this marks the first Rush record where they really began to spread their wings and serve up an indication towards the greatness that would follow with their following four uninterrupted classics in A Farewell to Kings through to Moving Pictures. The 20 minute, no holds barred opener "2112 (etc)" is an all-timer, but it's perhaps the only offering here that scales the truly heady heights that Rush would later become known for consistently reaching.
this is the longest song i have ever listened to. 20 whole minutes. the first song of the album couldve been an album on its own with how many chapters and themes it consists of. better than the previous album this project made me listen to but i'm still not gonna give it a 5
It's totally understandable that this album is on the list here. I quite enjoy Rush in general, so this was an easy enough listen, although I'm not super familiar with it. Certainly there are Rush albums I enjoy more – Caress of Steel, Moving Pictures, Grace Under Pressure etc... The problem with a lot of Rush albums is that there are some great tracks and then some really odd stuff as well. They often don't seem to fit together really that well. Maybe it's the long tracks, I'm never too sure and don't really have the time to invest to figure it out I guess. Maybe they're just the sort of band that you have to put together your own compilation for. The one or two tracks you like from each album? I guess if I were to do that there might not be any songs from 2112. Maybe the title track, I'm not sure. But I'm not a super fan of A Passage to Bangkok which is probably the most notable number from the LP. So, not bad, and I feel this is probably a 4 based on the overall sound. That might be a little generous, but I guess the album has given me a go to short-term PIN to use that I'll never forget...
78/100. This is a great sounding record, packed with tight playing and plenty of ambition. Really strong instrumentation all around. It’s not their best, but it’s definitely up there. The title suite alone does a lot of heavy lifting and it’s easy to hear why this album became such a turning point for them.
And the meek shall inherit the earth!!!!!!!!!!!!
Have heard of rush but never this album. Cool first minute turns into what I would consider the classic rush sound. Great guitar and drums. With that being said it definitely different compared to anything I’ve listened to prior. Good songwriting in the 5 min segment. After 7 mins should just be a new song but that’s ok because I like the sound. 19 mins of good music to open this album. Not life changing but good nonetheless. Crazy guitar at 11 mins on. Great switch in tempo. Just keeps getting better as it goes. Passage to Bangkok is very well written. Good guitar solo too. Twilight zone is more of the same. Good rock song. Best part is the guitar. Lessons was kind of forgettable. Nothing special. Back on track with tears. This is a full on ballad. Great song. Something for nothing is another banger. Great guitar as is the theme through out. Good lyrics/vocals again in this one. I enjoyed this album, just some good classic rock. 3.5 stars.

Top staaltje progrock
I can't not like Rush, though this album is certainly a little more avant-garde. Still nice to listen to.
I did like the led zeppelin inspired progression rock
I've never heard this album, and while I like Rush, I didn't really pick up on them until their next album, "ALL THE WORLD'S A STAGE". By the time "Permanent Waves" was released, I was all in.
Ive never been a fan of Geddy's vocals BUT the musicianship on this is amazeballs. This is fantastically proggy.
2112 overshadows the second half of the album.
Definitely a good and stufied album. Not a 100% my rock style but I did appreciate the quality. Will never get over how the singer sounds like a woman. Very talented tho. To fully appreciate it and be sure if I like it or not I would have to listen to it at least one more time
Sounds cool, not enough catchy tunes for me
I grew up listening to this shit! First of their albums I heard, went out and bought all the others that were out too. I was fortunate to see them on the Permanent Waves and Moving Pictures tours when I would say they were at the height of their powers! Absolute legends all 3 of them!
Interesting and full of talent
Rush is great and this was lots of fun to listen to!
I enjoyed this album! Really nice vibing music.
WE ARE THE PREISTS OF THE TEMPLE OF SYRINX im a bit of a rush fan. 2112 is a certified self indulgent classic. so much so that you forget there are 5 other songs lol. passage to bangkok is the only one worth remembering in that bunch but yeah aside from that? love love love 2112 (the song)
Erster Eindruck: find ich sehr geil, 18 MINUTEN???, huch er schreit Lieblingssong: „a passage to bangkok“ (Lieblingszeile:) „perfumed by a nepal night“ Overall Rating: 8/10 Anmerkungen: rocky horror picture show??, flüstern in twilight zone war intim, hat mir sehr gefallen
Probably want to rate the album 4 1/2 stars, but have to make a hard choice. Title song is 5 stars, but side 2 is definitely a bit of a letdown after 2112. Going 4 stars... 1976 was the year after Star Wars came out, so a futuristic dystopian society totally plays. The tuning sequence and following jam in Discovery still literally gives me goosebumps, maybe because I've played guitar so long. Great story, and ultimately he decides he can't/won't live in a world where this thing of beauty and wonder had been forbidden. Fantastic ending... ATTENTION ALL PLANETS OF THE SOLAR FEDERATION ATTENTION ALL PLANETS OF THE SOLAR FEDERATION ATTENTION ALL PLANETS OF THE SOLAR FEDERATION WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL... WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL... WE HAVE ASSUMED CONTROL... Passage to Bangkok better than I remember. Same for Twinight Zone. Lessons with a good groove. Tears, I can take it or leave it. Something for Nothing has a great riff but not much else.
Overture - Despite the long intro, I was vibing to it. I know it’s a long song, but it’s changing it’s sound often enough that it’s not overly boring A Passage to Bangkok - I like the guitar, but it lowkey sounds like any other rock song. The Twilight Zone - This one is slower and I vibe with that. Definitely like this one more than the last one. It’s calmer which is very nice. Lessons - Also sounds nice, but also sounds like a basic rock song. Tears - I’m really liking the slow songs, this ballad thing sounds amazing to me for some reason. Something for Nothing - Nice closer of a song, vibing along to it. I feel like i like the 20 minute song stole the show and is most likely the best song though.
2112 avoids the worst excesses of prog rock and keeps all the good bits, earning its place in the dad rock canon (or mom rock, I don’t discriminate). The first side is pretentious and indulgent, of course, but that's why you're here, and it's just half a record. That said, a 20-minute track is a hard pill to swallow. Especially as it contains a section around the 7-minute mark that's just guitar tuning. For the rest of the runtime, we get songs, each distinct but tied together with instrumental chops and, most of all, Lee's vocals. There's nothing mind-blowing here, and calling out those who say there is is fair play. But that doesn't make the music any worse. Overall a solid 9/10.
Side 1 is a sci-fi rock opera and I loved it all. Overture is an incredible way to start the album. The Twilight Zone is a favourite from Side 2, a little psychedelic. I think I knew Something for Nothing before listening, but I enjoy it more as the closing song in the context of the album. Solid album, may revisit a few songs.
3.8 / 5 Pretty cool and niche Prog-Rock album, you can't really go wrong with it. The only thing I could say is that it's not entirely what I'd listen to often, more like in situations like these.
After three different albums trying to perfect their Progressive Rock sound, Rush finally hit the nail on the head with their 4th album 2112 which started the beginning of their legendary run as one of the best Prog Rock bands of all time, and one of the best acts to ever come out of the great country called Canada. This album is very grand and mystical, as are many Progressive Rock albums, but this one stands out for being a real journey put into music that whisks you through the minds of some highly committed madmen and their wicked fantasy. Some would call this album satanic because of the album cover and outrageously long song runtime of the title track, but I personally find it to all help tie this album up in a beautiful manner that continues to blow peoples' minds nearly 50 years later. Even with some of the more unserious tracks like A Passage to Bangkok, this album still manages to have a great time with itself and rock on in ways that still feel refreshing even if they have been done over and over again. 2112 truly needs no sort of reasoning for why it is so great, it simply is!
I've shown a lot of bias on some of these albums, but is absolutely where my bias will show most. I adore Rush, my Dad adores Rush and while neither of our favourite albums are on this list, I am VERY familiar with the albums that are. From the outside looking in this album may not be anything special within the era of prog rock it was in and as long songs go I love it but it's certainly no Dogs or Close to the Edge at least creatively, but the message is what really stands out. "A single standing against the masses, no we're not going to do what you want." is how Neil himself described it and while there are many stories of similar value (like the Fountain Head) but it's important because that's what Rush were dealing with at the time. They were saying no they won't go mainstream, no they don't care if their dream dies here as long as they create what they want. The album before this sold very badly, on the account that it was and still is extremely strange even from a prog perspective and thus it was insanely hard to market. But this time around the message identified. The first side of the album is split into 5 pieces and all of them are excellent alone but certainly are better as the sum of its parts and it was one of the first long songs that made me realise as a story telling mechanic I love progressive rock, this and Dream Theatre. The way it flows is incredible, I've seen covers of this song live and even then you fall into it and before you realise it's slowing down and you're two parts in. It's such an experience and an incredible statement from one of the best three piece bands of all time and an insane thing for a group of 23/24 year olds to write. So that's the first half and... 20 minutes of the full 38. So how is the second side? May my father forgive me but I do not love Tears, as slow songs go Rush had and continued to write far more interesting music. For a band like Rush it's just too basic, too light. Every other song is great, especially Something for Nothing as a straight rock song but Twilight Zone and Passage to Bangkok have very unique riffs and sounds that help stand for themselves. This album could have easily been bloated but whenever I do a full listen through I feel like I blink and the second half passes me by as I enjoy it all the while. I will say this is a lot of love but if you see the below rating and are confused. As far as Rush goes, there are probably 4 albums off the top of my head I'd put above this and as for their prog work there are at least two. Best songs: 2112, Something for Nothing Worst songs: N/A Rank compared to everything else so far: 17/37 (below Franz Ferdinand, above Heavy Weather)
The Music talent is on full displayed through the entire album. With that said all I could think was “ha, nerds”.
7.5/10
It's proggy nonsense. It's pretty ridiculous for most of the run time. I found it quite charming. i thought all the instrumentals were excellent, and it had great hooks. I think I'm giving it a 4.
The band thought they were going to be dropped, so did the album they wanted to make. It became a huge success and marked the beginning of a 40 year run. It sounds rather dated now . The first side is a concept about an authoritarian government that bans music. Our hero finds a guitar and begins to play but is found out! The rest of the album is straight rock songs passage to Bangkok is the best . Over all worth hearing to see where Rush started but they did better albums later: moving pictures
Good listen, especially the first 20-minute track, some of the other songs after were a bit weak, but I still enjoyed listening to the entire album
It’s Rush. This is a familiar album. The opener is great. Will put this on anytime. 4/5
4,5 stars this record made me feel enjoying rock like the old times and I feel in my heart mike wheeler would LOVE it
Solid 4.5
7/10 Favorite: 2112: Overture…
3.67
Great album that goes beyond the rock opera that opens it.
Really good album from the prog-rock legends themselves. A Passage to Bangkok still remains a personal favorite because of how weird it is. 4/5.
Over 700 albums in and I finally got some Rush! Truly such an amazing and ridiculously consistent band, this album being right in the middle of one of the greatest runs of albums in rock history, and to think that after this they only continued to improve. The opening track is obviously so epic and iconic, but I feel like the back half of the album does just lose the plot just a tiny bit. Maybe opening your album with a 20 minute long prog rock sci fi epic isn't the best idea for that exact reason, but all things considered the fact that the second half is still at least decent I think is still impressive considering what it's following.
My favourite 70s sound. Enjoyed this whole journey
Title track cool and long
If I hadn’t heard loud prog rock before this album, I’d say it’s the most fun I had listening to music. The sound is explosive and the vocals are just mmmm, I see where Josh Kiszka from Greta Van Fleet got his vocal influence from.
Maybe the first time I've listened to an entire Rush album. For prog rock this was fun to listen to. Favorite songs: 2112 Overture, A Passage to Bangkok
I didn't think I would enjoy this album, but yep, I did. Hard to believe this is so old, because it does sound quite "modern" (80's sound) and you can tell how Rush influenced so many bands with this album. Although it is prog rock it is quite diverse in sound and vey accessible and enjoyable. I played it more than once, and happy discovery! 4/5
Really Like Rush, not big on experimental/concept albums. Moving Pictures is a better album overall from them.
Best = Overture.. Skip = Lessons
I was hovering between a 3 and a 4...it's certainly not easy listening especially the 20 minute song in the beginning which I am typically not a fan of. BUT, I acknowledge the work, and although I am not a fan of progressive rock, I give it a 4.
Musical and composatory mastership. If only the songs were a bit more memorable.
Super good prog rock. I like the title song (entire A side)
rock opera
The 20 min side a is quite the journey.
2112 was, for a considerable time, my favorite Rush album no question. That can almost entirely be contributed to the epic A-side suite which to this day I still consider to be my favorite progressive rock song of all time. I've always been a fan of this era of Rush, and 2112 is a perfect concentration of what that sound is capable of. Unfortunately for the rest of the album, it kind of gets overshadowed by the tremendous A-side. While there's some greatness that peeks through on tracks like A Passage to Bangkok and The Twilight Zone, the track run as a whole is very underwhelming in comparison. This is why A Farewell to Kings eventually replaced 2112 as my favorite Rush record, it does the things that make the A-side amazing for the duration of a whole album. I'll give Rush credit, as this is still the first record where they really got their sound down. They just needed a little bit more time to hone it. 2112 remains a great album and an all-time amazing song, and despite its shortcomings remains among my top three Rush albums.
Has a 20-minute epic, no bad songs and "Lessons" and "Tears" are excellent.
I was already a Rush fan.
2112 is one of the finest pieces of rock music to come out of the 20th century. The three members of Rush are phenomenal musicians, carried by Peart’s sci-fi inspired, dystopian lyricism. It’s so imaginative and unique, and I fully believe everyone should listen to it. The B-Side of this album is nowhere near as strong, and I unfortunately can’t just rate this album on the strength of the A-Side. It’s not terrible, just pretty standard Rush fare which, as a Rush fan, lands firmly it “alright” territory.
Great vocals, classic rock
what a nerdy record, still rips
Turns out I like Rush.
Breakthrough album for the band is a side of two halves. Classic prog rock side A with a concept and a couple of solid rock tracks side B. Probably not their best but undeniably their most important.
Rush are a lot of fun, a gang of big nerds doing their widdly sci fi nonsense.
Really good prog album. The title track is fantastic and tells a great story. Good to listen if you’re in a prog mood
Dette var fett. Kan høre med på det. Behagelig rock
Eclectic
not my favorite but still Rush
a pretty cool epic prog rock album. bold start with the 20 mintue track. the passage to bangkok stereotypical asian riff was a little cheesy but still rips. Tears is beautiful. Honestly for their potentially most operatic album, rocks hard, even if it's not as gripping as their main hits overall.
enjoyed it, would recommend it!
Heard it before. Whenever I listen to this album I think about that guy on Last.fm who used to listen to the title track multiple times a day, just this one song and nothing else, neither from Rush nor other artists. It's a fantastic album and a truly creative one 4/5
Yea this rocks. I like it.
I like Rush.
I very much enjoyed this album and my first time listening to a Rush album all the way through! Rush’s music has such a distinct style and sound that you immediately know it’s Rush when you are listening to a song of theirs. Overall, I enjoyed the prog and classic rock vibes of this album and I would definitely rock out to it again soon!
That 20 minute opener is a hard sell, but you have to remember it in the context of the age of vinyl where that opus played on one whole side of an album. It helps to know it's story before trying to decipher the lyrics of its sci-fi concept. The rest of the album is rounded out by some tight tracks with some truly exceptional musicianship. I didn't recognize and hit singles from the album, but if you enjoy hearing musicians excel at their craft, this is a great record for you.
It’s Rush! A little too much for me tho
Not their best - still great
Low/mid 4. Really enjoyed this more than I thought I would but I can't give a 5 with the painfully stereotypical asian lick
Very comfy old school rock, the first 20 min track is a bit much for me i prefer somewhat shorter tracks but it was very cool to experience still
I like Rush even more as I get older. I have no idea why. Their musicality and production are so clean and rich it’s just beautiful to listen to even when the lyrics can be a bit dark.
A prog album under 40 minutes!
I find prog always takes a few listens to really click, and this list isn't great for that. Still, it was an enjoyable listen. The title track is the highlight here, but I'm not sure how often I'll be in the mood spend 20mins listening to it again.
Listened to this on a flight to Thailand - literally a Passage to Bangkok
Back in high school, all the Rush-heads swore that 2112 was THE ALBUM one had to listen to. While I like some of their songs, the album never really impressed me enough to listen more than once or twice. I've always said that I respect Rush more than I want to listen to much of their music. A song here or there has always worked well for me. I was uncertain when this came up today. I assumed it would at some point, so I was going to have to form an actual opinion rather than just a shoulder shrug. I found side 1 to be a mixed bag. I could appreciate what they were going for, but some parts I enjoyed and others just felt "too much." I also didn't love some of Geddy's. Side 2, however, I really liked a lot. Each song was the perfect length and all showed the different strengths of the band as a whole. It felt more like the Rush I have always enjoyed, though I didn't know the songs.
I wish the first track was split up for the modern day listener. I preferred the more fast tempo moments but enjoyed it overall
The 2nd Rush album of this challenge and I don't think it hit quite as well as the first. Not that I didn't like it, with the 20 minute epic opener followed by five 3-4 min tracks, it just didn't feel as balanced as Moving Pictures. It probably wouldn't put me off returning though, just for that epic opener although it's the track that follows it, perhaps in relief, that really stuck out with it's greasy riff and blues-y solo.
Not sure why I haven't listened to anything from Rush yet, especially due to the many cameos in TPB, but I definitely enjoyed this album. There are clear similarities with LZ that I like, especially track 3. I have to admit, I didn't listen to track 1 all the way through but did like what I heard.
*2112* Absolutely classic despite being bit of a one sided album. Nothing on side two comes close to topping the "2112" suite, but the songs do quite well hold their own... (9.6) ★★★★½
I am kot as high on Rush as other prog, but 2112 is one of their best albums. Still not fully convinced. 4 stars
Solid stuff. Very classic. Apart from the use of the oriental riff in A Passage To Bangkok this is stuff that will all probably remain classic even in the year 2112.
I’m not a Rush Guy, and never have been. Probably haven’t heard this in full since high school or so. I listened with an open mind and had more fun than I expected. Realistically it was a 3.25 or something but I’m giving it the boost because it had moments that rock harder than most Canadians ever rock.
Some nerdy ass shit. But that’s good shit.
Fine. Continue to not understand the hype around this album.
Rush is a family favorite
I kind of wish I didn't like this stuff to be honest but I do
Gutes Album mit starkem Einstieg. Die zweite Hälfte geht dafür etwas schneller vorbei und hält nicht mehr ganz das Niveau des ersten Songs. Macht aber Spaß
Esimene "lugu" on 20 minutit pikk, wtf? Tundub olevat kogemusalbum (mitte ainult singlid reas). Mõnus kuulamine! Progerokki fännan ma väga ja see konkreetne album on kindlasti hea näide tervest žanrist. Pole päris Rushi parim väljalask, aga ikka panid sellega pihta.
Okay so this was pretty kick ass in a lot of places and helped me understand why there are some Rush fanatics out there so I’m giving bonus points for being a hater before, but still - I gave this one three listens and the less attention I pay, the better it sounds and I don’t think that’s really what they were going for.
This record goes some way towards answering the following questions: - What if Led Zeppelin were decent blokes instead of being a shower of gits? - What if prog rock got lean, taut and restrained? Depending on taste, these variables could result in music which sounds either better or worse than Rush's creative peers. Possibly both ideas might even feel true at the same time. Some incredible playing here. Still might not float everyone's collective boat.
Great.
uitgesponnen prog rock... kan het beter? eigenlijk wel, maar toch is dit bijna perfect
I love that they put a 20 minute long song as the opener as a big f-you to the record company. We do what we want. This alone gets you points.
Wow, I liked this way more than I expected! What a fun structure, huge jam and the short guys for when you don’t want to hear 20 minutes of non stop prog rock.
One my most back-and forth albums with Rush. On one hand, the title track is a blazing epic with a fun story and masterful musicianship. On the other, the B side is noticeably weaker, particularly lyrically. Still a fantastic record, but is more inconsistent than the other contemporary Rush records. Top tracks: 2112, A Passage To Bangkok, Tears
I love rush man. This is Geddy Lee at such a cool punk voice time. Can’t ignore the Ayn Rand stuff but musically this is such an achievement, as is everything they make. Title track probably didn’t need to be 20 minutes long but that’s rush. Undefeated drum and bass combo, Alex lifeson is like a 9/10 guitarist too but geddy and Neil are like 15/10. Much bigger fan of Moving Pictures but this is my father in laws favorite album so I hear this thing a lot.
Interested to hear a Rush album as I've heard of the band but not any of their music. Good classic rock, I approve.
A classic. I think this is the first 20+ minute song on the list. Let there be more
It's a great album but I have to deduct a star for Geddy Lee's vocals
I’m a Rush fan, so I’m going to give this a favourable review. It’s not actually my favourite Rush listen. I prefer Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures. This has a pretty silly rock opera, but it rocks so you just accept it. I suppose the elephant in the room is the Ayn Rand connection. In isolation this might bother me, but this was so long ago. Neil Peart read a book in the early 70s. These guys went on to be some of the nicest guys in rock. No neo conservative shenanigans. They supported diversity and human rights. Given an entire career’s worth of evidence, I would trust them as humans more than I do other supposedly cooler rock musicians.
Franchement c'était hyper bien ! Même avec le premier son qui dure 20min j'ai adoré franchement top je recommande
I took an online quiz once that was supposed to reveal my darkest secret. The result I got was: "You like Rush". I guess I do.
Cool Prog. The opener is great. The singles are tight.
This is the nerdiest album from a band full of nerds producing music exclusively for nerds. Is it the best Rush album? Probably not, but it is the most Rush Rush album. When Fry says "It's Saturday night, I have no date, A 2 Liter bottle of Shasta, and my all Rush mixtape" I like to imagine his mixtape was just 2112. Anyway this rules. It's not as truly epic as some other prog rock masterpieces but it's up there, and it has 5 perfectly serviceable Rush radio songs after the real part of the show.
Love "Side 1" of the album. The song "2112" is really cool as a story done as a song with multiple movements. Progressive rock at its best. Side 2 starts out with "A Passage To Bangkok" which has such a great riff. "Lessons" and "Something for Nothing" are very strong as well. Very good album. .
Quite nice background listening.
A 20 minute opening track is definitely a choice, but hey, it's still Rush.
Always like Rush and prog rock. 2112 is a classic, Rush are at their best. Extremely tight instrumentals, good songwriting, can't ask for more. The rest of the album is decent as well but 2112 is the obvious focus and highlight.
Solid album, Rush is great. Passage to Bangkok is one of my favorite tracks by them. Not my favorite album though.
Rush always amazing
I really like that first track and given that it's half the album I think it's fair to carry it to a 4. Everything else is pretty okay too!
I like this more and more with every listen. It may end up being a 5 soon.
I gasped. Literally lost breath. It’s Monday morning, but I can probably score some acid, right? I mean, I work from home, so when I believe my Microsoft Teams to be a sage oracle in the shape of a gummy bear, nobody will be able to tell. Drugs are bad, kids, and you certainly don’t need them to enjoy this record. Here we go. 2112 - YEAH! WOOOOOOO. ALRIGHT!! I still remember the first time I heard this song. Blew my 12 year old mind, and it now dances across my ravaged cerebellum (or wherever music is processed) like a beautiful memory with vibrant currency. Yes, it’s theatrical and on the nose with the “the dystopian rulers hate music, but we’re going to rise up and have FUN again!!!” The vocals on the sections where the priests are talking are god damn amazing and the guitar solos are insane. Ugh. This is one of the greatest songs ever. A Passage to Bangkok - There is more to this album? RACIALLY MOTIVATED GUITAR RIFF SPOTTED. The non-racially insensitive guitar riff is disgusting and this song is so heavy because of it. 2 for 2. The Twilight Zone - More scintillating vocals, but I can’t help but imagine a female singer in a smoky club singing this for some reason. Oh god I didn’t ask for the whispers. Ah man. More solid, dark sounding riffing, with impassioned performances. This thing doesn’t slow down. Lessons - The first track where I wasn’t enthralled the entire time, but there is still enough here to say it’s an enjoyable song. The vocals remain so good and I can’t help barely believe that there are only 3 of them. Tears - A real ballad has entered the track listing and I wish it wasn’t here. We were in a perfect album. Something for Nothing - These dang kids always wanting something for nothing. Nobody wants to do slave labour anymore. Good song. Well, it happened. 2112 has now came and went, and I am deeply satisfied. I have to now dread tomorrow, but that’s a problem for future me to handle. If I’ve made it through several U2 and Bruce Springsteen albums, I think I can handle a random Tuesday in September’s offering. This record is pure Canadiana that has enough spellbinding musicianship and creativity to transcend our rocky borders. This is so incredibly camp, yet so cool and powerful. Despite minor moments of filler, this one has gone down in history as a prog rock staple. This is the voice of the Canadian nerds, we have assumed control, we have assumed control. 4.5 HIGHLIGHTS: 2112, A Passage To Bangkok, Something for Nothing
Look, I like Rush a lot, and this album is getting a high rating because it's fun to listen to. Once in a while, like once every 5 years. It's not something you can just rock out to in your car. I like it though and understand why it's on this list. 4/5 stars
I've always enjoyed Rush, but I've avoided really diving into their catalog because it feels like too much work. That applies singularly to 2112 as well. I only had time for one listen, and I liked it quite a bit, but this is the sort of album that requires multiple listens over multiple days to truly understand how you feel about it. I can make an educated guess, though. I was inclined to go 3, but because I feel like I've probably been sleeping on Rush over the course of my life - to a criminal degree - I'll bump it up.
I've listened to the first two tracks a billion times, and look forward to the next billion. When #2 kicks in after "...inherit the Earth" is one of my favorite moments in music. The rest of the concept album is pretty good too. Second side falls off a bit, but "Something for Nothing" is a powerhouse finish. So, even though it's probably Paul Ryan's favorite album, I love it.
The title track is one of the greatest things in music history, but that also means that the rest of the album pretty much doesn't compare, even if it's still pretty good.
Very good prog album. I will not make this review longer than the first track.
A classic
not bad tbh maybe i like prog rock or whatever that is
This is a really great album. The label was going to drop them if they couldn’t make a commercially viable record. They said fuck it and put everything into this. This is the album that gained their following. Standouts include Passage To Bangkok, Twilight Zone and Something For Nothing
I appreciate the audacious experimentation of the opening track, it’s a fun album overall. It seems like this is really the beginning of their Prog-rock adventures that the band became known for. Definitely need to be in the mood for it, but it’s a solid album when that mood strikes.
Love the experimental vibe of the album, a pillar of prog rock. I like the idea of a 20 min epic song followed by 5 more standard length songs, but in practice I find the balanced a bit skewed for my liking. The 5 other songs feel like filler, I lost my interest in the album after the 20 min story. Apart from that, it's clear these are very talented musicians and songwriters and that this album is a defining piece of 70's art
Great prog rock but not my favorite Rush. Im not the biggest fan, but I feel this is a laughing pad to thier Prog masterpieces
Rockzin?
2112 – Rush (1976) | Progressive Rock / Hard Rock | Avg: 8.14 | Favorite Song: “2112” (Title Track) 2112 is Rush at their most unapologetically ambitious, and it works way more often than it should. The title track, the full 20-minute opener, is the clear highlight for me. It’s ridiculous, overblown, and completely locked in. Every movement of that suite feels intentional, whether it’s the whispered sci-fi drama or the explosive instrumental breaks. It’s a prog rock odyssey that somehow doesn’t overstay its welcome, which is no small feat for a track that long. The rest of the album plays backup to the title track, and while nothing quite reaches those heights, it all still holds its own. Songs like “A Passage to Bangkok” and “Something for Nothing” keep the energy high and the musicianship sharp. From a reviewer’s lens, this is the album where Rush truly became Rush. They're nerdy, technical, philosophical, and totally unafraid to lean into excess. But the difference is, they make it fun. 2112 isn’t just a prog milestone, it’s a blueprint for how to go big without losing your grip.
Enjoyed it. But that first song really had me thinking I was listening to 7 different songs.
- músicos muito bons, conseguem tocar o que as bandas da época tocavam e mais - muitos estilos, parece que colheram de vários frutos e não tinham um som próprio - eu prefiro “moving pictures”
Want to listen to more rush, good album
The first side of this album is amazing. It looses steam a little in the second half but that doesn’t take away too much from my enjoyment of it. The production and mix, at least on the 2012 reissue I listened, was great. A really good sounding album
First track is one of the greatest prog songs ever but the second side other than Bangkok is a bit underwhelming compared to some of their later albums that are great front to back (permanent waves, moving pictures, hemispheres)
Nicer sound aber ein bisschen lange lieder lol
With no shoes was my favorite, i also liked youre a big girl now, overall a cool album i liked it, it does have a feeling of freedom to it
Un bombazo del progresivo. La voz de este hombre es espectacular
Really good album
Super cool album really liked it
I liked several of the songs on the album
I liked the album a lot. It felt like a mix of Iron Maiden and Slade. I liked the vocals and the guitar solos - all incredible and unique. I didn't know about this band at all and I feel I will come back to it for sure. The first 20-minute track was a banger but alsoThe Twilight Zone was great.
Possible the best album of the tail-end era of Progressive Rock. The title track is the main event here. A full-on space opera with an easy to follow narrative and memorable recurring motifs, that make the 20-minute track go by in a flash. The rest of the album isn't bad either, but of course isn't the reason the album is on this list. Key tracks: 2112 A Passage to Bangkok Something for Nothing
I’ve heard this one before! I sought it out because I heard the title track in an episode of American Dad
Quite a good album, I liked the 20 minute prog epic more than the more radio friendly side. Good to see Rush showing what they’re capable of
Very good musicians. I very liked some passages but some songs are too long and habe too many different themes within the song.
Great album. I don't feel like I need to talk about it. Just really solid. Musically amazing, vocals fit perfectly. Just so good.
cada música é uma vibe diferente eu gostei
A low 4. And mostly for the title track.
Solid Rush representative, long songs, acute and strong vocals, crazy tempos, beautiful musical background.
Great musicians and incredible lyrics. When I was in college, those who weren't constantly playing Waiting for Columbus or Rumors, were playing this album
I love their sound, prog rock gatekeeper dickheads can fuck off. These Canucks rock. 4/5
A seminal prog rock album with a standout opener, that said the second side falls off in consistency but does not mean the music is any less impressive, just not as cohesive thematically
It’s Rush ofc it’s fantastic
epic. Fun. I liked the first half better perhaps.
fuck yeah
The opening title track is all you need, get on and strap the fuck in. There is no height limitation to get on this Rush ride but there is a bitch scale you need to pass. You gonna bitch about a 20 minute track? No? Ok good because this track rips, strap in and enjoy. 4 stars
A good album, I liked Overture and Tears the most.
Overall quite good. I felt like the Genesis album a few days ago was like Rush without the best parts of Rush. This was an improvement, in my opinion.
👍😁
I thoroughly enjoyed this album. The overarching story of the first song stands the test of time. There will always be societies and cultures that struggle with the suppression of creativity and individualism. I found it to be an interesting song both musically and lyrically. While Bangkok was a fun, sillier song, songs like Tears and Something for Nothing were very moving. Great album.
I feel like you either love Rush’s sound or hate it — fortunately I’m a big fan. First track was lengthy but sonically unique, I’ve experienced worse prog-rock slogs across 13+ minute tracks. The solo in the middle of Something for Nothing pulls this album up a star alone. Also Neil Peart really knows what he’s doing on those drums, who knew! You’ll never hear a denser live recorded kit than his, I swear.
The 2112 suite is the star of the show here. They truly dipped their toe into progressive rock, and were greatly rewarded. The B side is nothing to scoff at, boasting some perfectly enjoyable radio-friendly hits.
One of the best albums of its time. Way ahead of anything else in its decade.
Really good album almost a 5 honestly. Enjoyed every song
Awesome
If I had gotten this album back when I started the list, I probably would have given it a 5, but after a few more years of broadening my musical horizons, I don't think it's on the same level as some of my other favorites. But Rush is an extremely proficient band, and they give an excellent performance on this album! They're all very talented musicians. The production quality sounds great too, and I overall still like this album (but not as much as their subsequent four albums). I found this album back when I was first getting into progressive rock, and the title track definitely left an impression on me. Listening back to this now, though, I have to acknowledge that the album is not actually as "prog" as I had once thought. The track '2112', while a side-long epic, is not actually very prog-like in its construction. It doesn't seem like a through-composed work like Close to the Edge, but rather a bunch of disparate, short hard rock tracks stitched together. The music within these sections themselves is not super proggy either; the chord progressions and rhythms, for example, are not very out of the ordinary for many classic rock or metal bands. And then the second half of the album is just a collection of fairly regular classic rock songs. Overall I think the album is probably about as proggy as (or even less proggy than) any album from Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, or Deep Purple; all of these bands were extremely creative and progressed music in a sense, but aren't lumped under the label of prog-rock like Genesis or King Crimson. The most progressive thing about the album is definitely the sci-fi story-telling; I will say that the concept of 2112 is very fun and cool. Anyways, I think that Rush's next several albums are more intricate and complex, and deserve to be called true progressive rock albums. 2112 doesn't quite fit in that category. ...but, as everyone knows, it's a waste of time to fuss too much about how to label the genre of an album!
Great music, but that first 20 min song made this album feel like it was longer than is was.
Good ol' fashioned rock. Great vocals as well. Not a fan of the 20 minute mashup of multiple songs, makes it harder to skip the lame ones. Haha.
7/10 Good music, not very meaningful
Listened to this tonight while I stressfully try to withdraw 200 dollars canadian from my Bet365 account to in-part pay for a switch 2. I know that this makes me seem like a degenerate gambler but I actually only put 20 dollars in here in 2022 and made a 10x return in three years from only betting 1 and 2 dollars on basketball games and the academy awards. I know its haram but it was harmless and i made 180 dollars that I will now use, along with 250 dollars in gift cards to subsidize a 700 dollar switch 2... if you ask me I am stealing from amazon and I feel awesome about that. anyways rush was my fav band growing up and I don't really like them as much anymore but I still think they undeniably kick ass soooo 4 stars.
great classic rock
the riffs are cool occasionally but the lyrics are kind of teenager's first rock poetry and the big song '2112' wasn't really as graceful as i thought it would be musically
Muy bueno
we all know neil demanded the oriental riff
My favorite rush record to pop in the car and assume control of all planets of the solar federation.
a little corny but a really good prog rock album
Thoughts before listening: Rush is one of those bands that I avoided for years because it all just seemed too much. The represented the worst of prog rock excess for me. However, I have started to come around a bit in recent years. There are some awesome songs mixed in with the over the top 20 minute epics. I know this is one of their most popular albums, but I am not sure what's on it. Review: Well this starts out with a 20-minute song so par for the course with Rush I guess. I must say that its a pretty solid 20-minute song, with lots of different changes so it feels more like a suite of songs totaling 20-minutes. The rest of the album is more of the same just in a shorter format with all other songs clocking in under 4 minutes. Best of the rest are "A Passage to Bangkok" and "The Twilight Zone". I guess I'll give this 4-stars although I'm still not fully bought in on Rush.
Overture is great, I just wish it was broken up into different tracks so I could choose to listen to the good parts instead of committing to a 20 minute epic. The B side of the album is still pretty good, it just lacks the wow factor of the first song.
Personally, the second side of the album was certainly much stronger with a few highlights like "A Passage to Bangkok", "Tears" and "Something for Nothing" with the first die having "Temples of Syrinx". The second half of the album gave a lot of Supernatural (the show) vibes which was great as it has a strong soundtrack. Currently the album will receive a 3.5/5 with a bump to 4, however if the first side of the album had more songs similar to the first, it could have easily been touching a half-rating or a full rating higher.
So classic. Everything feels huge and on its own time. Legendary guitar tone. Geddy’s vocals soar into the next dimension. Feels like a journey from end to end!
2112 is a truly great album that I usually kind of need to be dragged into, kicking and screaming. I do like Rush, but my forebrain often forgets this fact. Also, Rush makes the kind of prog that I rarely feel the need to listen to. Despite this, I do think they make really great, incredibly intricate music. And by some metric, 2112's title track may be the greatest, most intricate song Rush ever recorded. Side B of 2112 is worth discussing, but we are really here for said title track. 2112 is one of the most important longform concept pieces in rock history. It is a 20 minute dystopian epic comprising the entirety of side A, and frankly, it has been discussed to *death* so I may try to keep this brief. 2112 tells the story of someone in a dystopian future finding a guitar, immediately mastering it, getting it destroyed by the high priest collective, then possibly dying by their own hand. I think it's a reasonably compelling narrative, but I do have complaints. Generally, I think Rush's lyrics are a little weak, usually nothing *terrible* just very, very literal, and that usually isn't a problem. However, this is a 20 minute long sci-fi narrative, and some real cheese seeps into some of it, but your mileage may vary. Also, we have quite a bit of Randian influence here, which is rarely good, but Rush manages to harness it in a way that isn't immediately distracting. Lyrics aside, the composition here could probably convey the story as an instrumental, which speaks to just how good Rush are at composing: it's very impressive, and the whole affair is consistently engaging and shockingly brisk. Let's now discuss side B. These are 5 disconnected rock songs that are all at least good. More great song writing, and very literal lyrics abound (really only distracting on A Passage To Bangkok and The Twilight Zone). A Passage To Bangkok is one of the best here (if you can overlook a *little* exoticism), but they did decide, for some reason, to interrupt the otherwise great song, not once, but twice, with the "Asian Music" sting, which kind of grinds everything to a halt and jumpscares me, as a modern listener. The Twilight Zone is another musical highlight here. But again, none of the songs are bad. Like I said, I do have some complaints with 2112, but I do still think it's great. Just the fact that they were able to execute something so ambitious and epic as well as they were deserves accolades. But more importantly, the album still has great songs, it isn't just a writing exercise, honestly this rocks pretty hard, which is kind of Rush's magic spell. Again, it's not always one I'm in the mood for, but I'm down for a spin of 2112 now and then.
Oväntat lättillgängliga melodier! Gillar soundet.
Kinda silly sci fi side 1, still showing off all the talent. Side 2 is a rock and roll masterclass
Not the best RUSH bust still amusing.
The greatest trio in rock history; Neil Peart, Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson. I've loved Rush since middle school when I first listened to this very record. They were instrumental in my accepting of synths in rock and my eventual broadening into all genres of music past metal. 2112 is half a masterpiece, and half a decent rock album. The A-side is a 20 minute long sci-fi epic, told through fast riffing, blistering solos, some of the best drumming ever put to tape, and beautiful melancholy at a world long past. I love every second of the title track, and feel it is in every way a perfect prog rock epic. The B-side, however, drags a little bit. The five tracks aren't the worst thing I've heard, but it's nowhere close to the material they'd release a year later on A Farewell To Kings. Whether it's the stereotypical Asian motif on A Passage To Bangkok or the guitar doubling the chorus vocals on Lessons, each of these songs just have something that irk me enough to not revisit this half too often. 2112 as a whole isn't even in Rush's top 5 albums for me, but that is a testament to the continued quality of their discography. Being only their fourth album, they still had growing to do; but they finally found their sound and niche with the title track off this fantastic record.
4 out of 5. The first song on this one is epic. Loved the musicianship this album has.
Somewhere between 3-4. When i listen to Rush it sounds more like an exhibition than anything. As if they are just showing off what they are capable, which is no doubt sick. I'm hoping the more I listen and can latch on to the structure of the songs I'll enjoy it more. It's a 3 today but think it'll be a 4 in the future.
This was actually pretty fun. They lost a star immediately bc of the 20 MINUTE OVERTURE but got me back with some tasty licks in later tracks. I’m picking up what they’re putting down
Side A (all of track 1) is just so much fun. There’s just something kind of endearing about rock opera like songs, especially when the story is kind of impossible to follow. B side isn’t quite are interesting to me, outside of “Lessons”. This album is definitely a must listen, but Moving Pictures has more I want to come back to. Funny to learn that Geddy Lee’s real name is Gary but his Polish mother pronounced it that way and he changed it.
A great classic rock album - great musicians
Ciertamente un álbum de rock mucho más progresivo de lo que se había visto hasta el momento y aunque no tiene muchas canciones la primera (que bien podría ser un EP por si mismo) vale la pena aún sea por si sola, sólido, entretenido, rock.
Impressive musicianship, seems like they traversed a ton of different styles and genres with ease, well done
Really charming
Good
this is the second time I’ve listened to this album this year. It’s damn good! The overture alone is worth the price of admission. And “something for nothing” is such a great closer. When geddy lee sings, he inspired a generation of shitty metal singers, but we don’t hold that against him.
Good
Finally some good rock music! I liked the lead singers voice!
Great album
Really liked this album will likely listen to it again
Rush fan
Opens incredibly strong. Great throughout.
Heard this before, and same thing, it's good, but not especially standout. Some great moments though, that made me perk my ears up Favorite track: Tears
