Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Decent enough pop rock records, like a precursor to BritPop Indie.
It was... Long. Two and a half hours is a lot of record.
Weird but at times good
Interesante
Decent album, wore on a bit towards the end.
The soft boys aren't that soft, pretty Enjoyable album! 3.5/5
Nothing special, nothing bad
Surprisingly interesting! high 3.
This album is too long for me to listen to but some of it I did listen to was ok
Had no idea what to expect from this. It sounds more 90s than early 80s this far. This is basically a parody album. Not bad. I only listened to the original album 36 minute album and not the bonus tracks that were added at a later time totaling almost 2 and a half hours long.
That wasn't bad. The album cover was kinda cool too.
I read some of the background and I disagree with this being psychedelic. Neo-psychedelic? Maybe, but I don't know what that means. A sound that inspired bands like REM or the Replacements? I hear that in spades. Let's just go with jangle-pop/rock. I really enjoyed the first track I Wanna Destroy You. Other favorites were Kingdom of Love, Positive Vibrations, Queen of Eyes, and the title track. But looking back it was the first three songs and last two that were good, not sure about the middle five (I Got the Hots and Old Pervert were definitely not good). So while this was a surprisingly good album, it's really only half of it that's good. Feels like a solid 3.5 but not quite sure I should round up. Really wish I could give a half star here.
Punk-ish with some psychedelic influences. Not bad, just nothing crazy for me. Favorite tracks: "Old Pervert", "I Wanna Destroy You"
I found this to be a completely fascinating sleeper of an album (for me at least). It's god just enough Pink Floyd sprinkled into the gumbo to make it pretty interesting.
“The album received little critical notice and was a commercial failure, and the band split up a few months after its release.” Sounds perfectly worthy of a must-listen before I die. Oh, but it helped influence R.E.M., so… still I’m gonna defer to those original reviews after listening to this one.
2.5
soft boys by name
It was weird bc I felt so neutral about this whole album: it started and I was a bit taken aback by it, neither hating it nor liking it that much BUT then I managed to get more into the groove and it was quite good. When I first opened the album I was so baffed at why it was 2h30 but the fact 30 of the songs were "bonus" didn't swing with me. Other than that slight gripe with the album it wasn't awful.
AJ: pretty cool Brit pop whoopdie dooos. I like it. It’s good. It’s good. I like it. Pretty cool. Oh yeah.
Between the group name, album cover, title and wiki description, this album did ont inspire any confidence. But surprisingly, the music was not at all bad and actually managed to get better as it went along. Goes to show how appearances can be misleading. 3 pairs of deceptive masks out of 5 🎭🎭🎭
Nice in the background, but it doesn't grab you
it has its moments but quirkiness is almost always a fatal flaw
This was pretty alright, but not too much past that. I think it's pretty obvious to tell this was ahead of the curve in a lot of ways, but that does mean a lot of sounds were done better by others later on. It's still good, don't get me wrong, but it left a lot to be desired at points.
Long, but I love the early English alt sound
Surf rock meets post punk. I don’t love it but it’s sure creative. 5/10
soft boys sounds like a euphemism for testicles. the wikipedia article claims its psychedelic which seams like a stretch, it just feels like some fairly run of the mill post punk. not bad but i couldn't really get on board with the singers style.
3.5/5. This album has no right to be this decent from a group that calls themselves the Soft Boys.
This is great fun - it sounds at times a throwback to some of the 60s stuff that we've heard, and at other times a flash forward to a lot later in the 80s/90s. Great level of energy, some of the lyrics are pretty clever and I'm glad that I've heard it. Will I listen to it again? Probably not, so 3/5.
Ei huono kuten Uotinen sanoi 3/5
Kivaa musaa, hyvä fiilis. Huippuhetket uupui.
Levy alkaa vahvasti, mutta keskivaiheilla iskee vähän vähemmän kiinnostava jakso. Sanotaan nyt 3/5, saattaa noustakin.
This whole damn list is just mediocre new wave bands I've never heard of. This was better than most, but not much. 3.5 stars
Amazing - 10 tracks and 30 bonus tracks. What an idea. The album cover is funny, the band name is funny, the music is intriguing. Interesting to read how this album wasn't commercially successful upon release and then only got recognition later. Looking at this album cover you would think it was for an indie band in the 2020's. Overall it's a 3/5 for me.
Not bad, but I prefer Robyn Hitchcock's solo stuff.
Underwater Moonlight is the second album by English rock band the Soft Boys. Initially unsuccessful (commercially not critically), the album became a psychedelic cult classic as people would take psychedelic drugs before listening to the album. Critics have retroactively praised the album for contributing to the underground pop scene of the 1980's, and helping start the neo-psychedelia genre. They state that the poor commercial performance at release may have been a result of the album's music being ahead of its time. This album was interesting to say the least. It was trippy, but not in a way that affected the music, because I thought the production was well done. Decent album overall - perhaps if I listened to the album high it might sound even better since other people have this opinion.
Not really my thing but was a solid album. Felt a little derivative at times but had some solid ideas that to me were not fully fleshed out. Some tracks like "Old Pervert", "Queen of Eyes" and "I Wanna Destroy You" were solid but felt a little incomplete and could have been executed better. Still, a lot of solid tracks with my favorites being "I Got The Hots", "Insanely Jealous of You", "Tonight" and "Underwater Moonlight". I would give this a 7/10,
Enjoyable but not groundbreaking
Very quirky album. Felt like a lot of the other UK bands we've heard on here but something about it was still entertaining. Maybe it was the wildness of some of these songs and the lyrics. Or just creepiness of the album cover. Either way, it was enjoyable.
This one I have heard of but had never listened to before tonight. I can definitely see how it's been an influential album for so many, but on a first listen it's definitely in "wouldn't turn it up but wouldn't turn it off" territory for me. I feel like I want to like this one more than I do, so I'll certainly give it another go or two, but for now it's just fine.
Thugs in silk shirts! What I liked on this album I loved but the rest just passed me by. Worth listening to just for the first track, "I Wanna Destroy You"
relisten, me gusto la onda y que sea un precursor del rock altenativo me interesa
Very Beatle-y. Punky Beatles. And it reminds me of Robyn Hitchcock...ha! When I looked up The Soft Boys, turns out, Robyn Hitchcock is in them!
I liked this, I feel like it was ahead of its time
I'm a sucker for new wave. A bit upbeat compared to some of the stuff I like but good overall
Too long.
I liked this but just shy of a 4. Opening track is by far the best but I also liked Insanely Jealous of You. Some interesting punk-ish elements.
Highlight: Underwater Moonlight
Troszkę przydługie, pojedyncze kawałki miały trochę lepszą nutę i tempo, ale nic wartego zapamiętania.
This is okay...maybe pretty good. A lot of different stuff going on here. Hope to come back and it probably deserves a higher rating. 1 = bad 2 = average 3 = good 4 = great 5 = outstanding
Post-punk. Me sonaba Underwater Moonlight. Me gusta Song #4
An interesting album - with equally interesting lyrics. The very simple instrumentals behind the lyrics made the whole thing quite repetitive and therefore no track really stood out for me. Also, what were all the bonus tracks about - who would ever want or need 30 bonus tracks?!?!?!?!
Remind me of many bands but felt a bit Ordinary Boys - Indulgently long
ojalá pudiera recuperar esos 180 minutos
Actually enjoyed a lot. Surprised it came out in 2010, sounds a lot like a bridge between classic rock and alt rock
Not much variety, just sounds like your average 80s rock album
Interesting stuff - I don't think I need to play it again, but I do wonder if I had heard it in 1980 if it would have become one of my favourites then.
Mixed, but altogether better than expected. I feared for the worst when I read "punk" in the book, but this is rock with an 80s sensibility production-wise. Not every song is good, but all of them are at least adequate. 2.5/5
It definitely starts strong... I Wanna Destroy You and Kingdom of Love are strong catchy edge alternative british rock... some kind of byrds and oasis blending with a dose of eccentric. Later the eccentric takes a bit more center stage and Mr. Hitchcock goes a-wandering. The lyrics seem weird for weird-sake, but Tonight and Queen of Eyes are also good. Its fine, but there's not much i want to go back to listen to.
3.75
Rock psicodélico. Ni fu ni fa.
Post-punk. Me sonaba Underwater Moonlight. Me gusta Song #4.
Better than I expected, bit contrived in places but overall a nice listen
Thought that this was a pretty average overall but with some early alternative sounds throughout. Some of the songs were decent but then others were relatively bad. Felt like this band was influential in their sound since they were early 80s although it didn’t feel too refined and the excessive bonus tracks showed that. 5.9/10
Never heard of this band but it was a decent listen. Can definitely see the indie influence it might have had.
Got a very 70s vibe
I listened to it once and was unimpressed. But something made me hold off on reviewing and listen to it another day. It got better, and I can see how it must have been an interesting crossroads between punk and 80s popular music, but I don't think there's really anything to return to after Track 1. (prior listen)
3.5
It's got a nice vibe to it, this. It's hardly deep, and a little bit one-note at times, but it's an easy listen.
Dug the backing vocals, seems a lot of sneer in this list…
Started to blend after 40 albums but if you dig the vibe then its awesome
Never heard of, or listened to, these guys before. I liked them. Couple of particularly good tracks including 'tonight'. Will come back for another listen ...
enjoyed 'insanely jealous of you' - catchy hook that earwormed its way into my head for the day
The Genesis of Robyn Hitchcock's career, but he went on to much greater things than this.
This one had some elements I really liked and definitely an interesting listen to hear where subsequent bands were influenced. I think the main downside was the lyrics and subject matter, just didn't connect.
Prima album, had het op tijdens het koken, niet heul spannend
Pretty solid
I think this album has some potential. I think I'd give it a second listen through. At some points the music got irritatingly high pitched and the music sometimes drowned out the singers voice. Otherwise pretty decent music overall.
First listen did not really do it for me, but relistening a couple of times did help. Underwater moonlight, insanely jealous of you and positive vibrations are the better songs I would say. Rest is kinda okay; didn't listen to all 30 bonus tracks though
Fun jangly pop/punk sound and great guitar. Album is way too long though. Like way too long
No real issue with this, but I didn't see what was so special or groundbreaking about it either. Sounds a bit like the Byrds in the punk era to me with some Beatles and Ramones influences involved as well.
Never heard this but thought it was pretty good. Will dig deeper…
Some really good tracks on this one. They are an interesting band and a lot of fun. I can hear the styles and artists than influenced them and also hear how they influenced others with their own style.
A bit long
Answers the question, what if The Byrd's made a punk album. Little too long, so I just listened to the original 10 songs.
I had a chance to listen to this album while I was out walking the dog. It was a solid album overall, and according to the wiki this album was very groundbreaking and influential to artists such as R.E.M. and The Pixies. There were no tracks that I recognized but it did provide a good enough soundtrack for the walk..
This starts strong: weird album cover, from the 80's, band name The Soft Boys, first track 'I wanna destroy you' ....damn I'm hoping for good stuff. Was sorely disappointed. Better than usual post punk ish, but not by much. Rounding up to a 3 (GENEROUSLY) because of band name and album cover.
Like some of it. Didn't like some of it.
Once again I find myself appreciating this sort of psychedelic new wave mostly for the artists that would be inspired by it later. This was too jangly and chaotic for me in many of the tracks. Some great songs on here though.
Some of this was certainly fine. Really long, but then I found out that a bunch of the songs of the Spotify album are re-releases and bonus. It sounds like the predecessor to a lot of the music I listen to now. I probably won't purposely listen to this again...
I've never heard of the Soft Boys and all of the music on Underwater Moonlight was new to me. The music style was somewhat familiar - ¿perhaps somewhere between James, The Kinks, and the Waterboys? Most of the album was okay or better, but I'm not sure I can round up to 4 stars. "Underwater Moonlight" was the track I rated the highest.
This album wins the Creepiest Cover Award.
Glad to hear this, the title track is great and the rest a solid slice of early 80s powerpop/psychedelia.
First half was better, but overall an enjoyable listen. I think it hasn't really "clicked" for me yet, but I'd give it another try for sure. 3.5 overall, but I will give it a 3.
It has nice portions, nothing inherently wrong with it. Very Beatles-esque at points.
It's okay, but not really my kind of music.
Lovely stuff
What a great band name. Ain't never been boys softer than these. This album was not great, but it was actually a lot better than my expectations. I actually enjoyed it quite a bit. The opener, Destroy You, and the closer, Moonlight, were my faves.
feels more like a quirky alternate rock album than the psychedelic music i know
Wenn das hier einen Eingang findet in die Liste, müsste jedes Parquet Courts Album rein. Slightly underwhelmed 2.5
Not my cup of tea
snappy, uptempo beats; first two tracks are fun, rest are more punk
A compendium of influences. Entertaining.
80s, punky, British, not bad
OK, but i doubt i will ever remember this band
Can hear the influence on the Stone Roses, OK album
Better than I thought it was going to be. I really enjoyed it and gotta give it another spin.
The Soft Boys make a soft album
Overall good some weird lyrics
More main character energy! Still nothing that really stood out to me though oof :(
Enjoyable enough, but sometimes I found it faded too far into the background and only came back after a song switch.
It was ok
I only had a chance for a quick listen. I didn't like the first song, but after that there were some catchy well crafted pop songs, guitar front and center with occasionally a jangly 60s feel. It's easy to see how this would get ignored in the early days of punk. I like Robyn's voice and it's good to see he's still performing and cranking out albums today and living with a country music singer 30 years younger than he.
It was fiiiiine
Pop-rock sin estridencias. Batería y guitarras poderosas.
When some obscure album from a once obscure artist shows up on the list, it has a backstory that reads something like, "initially panned upon release, only sold 5,000 copies, but everyone one of those people started a band." And often times one of those bands is R.E.M. If the endorsement is from Peter Buck or Mike Mills, I usually end up loving the album. A Michael Stipe shout-out is hit or miss. Apparently Bill Berry never went on record to rave about some forgotten gem. I can hear where R.E.M. got inspired by a lot on this album. Oddly enough, I kept thinking I'd like to hear all of these songs with Michael Stipe's Murmur/Reckoning Era vocals. Actual rating is 3.5, but my appreciation of the album cover isn't quite enough to curve up. I didn't listen to all of the seemingly endless bonus tracks Spotify threw at me. I'm not a monster.
Never heard of this band, I imagine they must have a bit of a cult status due to only having 3 albums and not being around for long. But I'm putting that aside, I won't be brainwashed by no cult. There are some genuine tunes on this album, Tonight is a fun singalong and You'll Have to Go Sideways is a really fun riff where it sounds like they accidentally left a synth track in towards the end. I do enjoy the not overly polished demo type vibe with albums like this one. Final bonus points for some laugh-out-loud lyrics (would have gone for 3.5)
Never heard of these Soft Boys before, but they made a good first impression. A bit like an 70s/80s Supergrass. Big points for the batshit lyrics, and decent blend of singalong-ability & post-punky experimentation. 3.5.
Føltes ut som en moderne Beatles
Interesting tracks here and there punctuated by just enough tongue-in-cheek energy and wild abandon to make things work. Kept me interested enough to listen through all 2.5 hours at least
yeah pretty good
It was alright. "I Wanna Destroy You" was probably my favorite track on the album
This was ok but a bit chaotic for me.
Starts strong, gets slightly more whiny towards the middle of the album and then recovers. Overall good album.
Far too long. 2.5 hours. Music is good though. Rock and roll from 80s.
Delightfully synical
Catchy songs but just not my style
Bang average. Nothing great, nothing truly shite either.
Very, VERY long album, but I didnt mind it. Kinda reminded me of some early soft rock Real rating 3.5/5
Why is the version on spotify so long???? I Googled the original tracklist and listened to the original 36 mins. Definitely did not hate this. Wikipedia says it's influential as it inspired R.E.M and I can totally see that and I respect it. Probs 3.5 stars.
pretty good
War ok
okay punk rock
80's but sounds like the 60's. A strange album with two distinct halves. Not bad.
Another psychedelic/new wave band that is pretty good, but just didn't do anything special for me.
There were some good tracks and I quite enjoyed listening to it. A boring ***
Om Arie's woorden te gebruiken: Geinig plaatje! Helemaal niet slecht dus, ga ik nog vaker proberen.
Yeah pretty good
Verrassend gevarieerd en mooie stem.
3.4 - An exceptionally literate sound, one that draws from and pays homage to tons of influences. I hear nods to 60s rock (Beach Boys, Beatles) to glam (Bowie, TRex) to post punk. “Insanely Jealous of You” is one of the best songs about jealousy I’ve ever heard. Still, I think it’s overall good but not great.
Its very REM. I guess i dont mind it but i dont really like it much either
Rock psicodélico.
Un merecido 3 es todo lo que puedo decir... HOY GANA LA U EL MUNDIAL
Rock. Punk.
There are some interesting sounds here, but it just doesn't come across as a fun album you want to keep in regular rotation. It's worth the listen one time through, but probably not again.
If give them another listen! Pretty good but nothing caught me
cheeky and kind of fun
Su principal pecado es durar más de dos horas. Pero tiene buenas cosas adentro.
it was fairly promising quite disappointing
Enjoyed the songs and sound but album was too long!
I didn't listen to the 2 hours worth of bonus tracks but the album was fine up until that.
It wasn't bad, but very long. I could probably find a song or 2 to listen to again.
Liked it will probably listen again. Never heard of these guys before.
This album reportedly influenced R.E.M., and you can definitely hear that. I'm just not so sure it stands up on its own. Best track: I Wanna Destroy You
No miro nada relevante en este álbum, más que probablemente haya sido influyente
I would have enjoyed this a lot more if it was 1/3rd of the length. As it was, 2hrs 27 minutes was one long slog. Some decent stuff in amongst the 40 tracks but just way too much filler. 2.5/5
Come on wtf is this
Les Beatles en beaucoup moins bien, il y a de meilleurs albums à mettre dans cette liste.
No thanks
It was fine
очень позитивные и предсказуемые ребята
psychedelic rock isn't normally my thing, and this proved to be the case with this album too i also did listen to it during a particularly stressful work day... so maybe that that is compounding here
I can kinda see the influences on other bands, but this was mostly forgettable. I say mostly because I’ve unfortunately had I Got the Hots stuck in my head since yesterday. Probably won’t listen to this one again.
Nothing that got stuck in my head
Nothing that thrilled me here.
Not my type of music
Annoying wailing sounds with lyrics that is just a guy reading his poetry completely deadpan. Yuck.
Get a new name, boys
More like the wank boys
Boring. Shit name. Shit album. ...And your Mother stinks!
So inconsistent imo. One song I’d think oh this is alright next one was like nah shit this
Listened 13 May 2026
I wasn’t too interested in this album.
Meh.
some of its many tracks really just objectifies the lady they speak of, hell song #4 and empty girl were terrible for that, and the lengthiness in itself made all tracks seem like a blur. all continuations of "old pervert" creeped me out more than ever.
This album was alright; I appreciate it more as an inspiration for other bands than as its own work. I may need to revisit it, but for now it didn't do a whole lot for me.
вокал где-то сзади, не очень динамично очень скучно и бритпопно пойду лучше блюр или оазис послушаю не переслушаю
I enjoyed this but I don't have any reason to revisit this album in the future. Nice vibes.
Gear: SIMGOT SuperMix 4 Artwork: 🎎🏖️🌅 Production (2025 Remaster): 🤏🎚️😑 Music: 🪄🧩🌪️ Rating: 🌱🌱(🌱)/5
This is a prelude to a lot of the jingle jangle mush that was released on sub pop in the mid 80s. Undoubtedly there is a lot of invention here its just difficult to wade through
Raskasta kuunnella koko albumi. Sois periaatteessa muodollisesti pätevää kevyttä brittirokkia mutta enpä voi sanoa, että yksikään biisi olisi jäänyt mieleen. Jää yhdentekeväksi tekeleeksi. 2/5
40 goddamn songs? four zero, forty, c'mon. two tracks in, i don't hate it, can't wait for another...38 songs admittedly, I didn't not actively listen to this record
Didn't like it very much
ahhh bizarre, kinda terrible, but nevertheless interesting to see its influences and to hear what it influenced. Dont think ill feel the need to return but not displeased i listened.
very "just okay" 80's rock.
I wasn't aware of the existence of this band prior to yesterday, and I now long for those days of ignorant happiness. Ok, it wasn't that bad, like an undiscovered Bjork album! It was just boring. Nothing on there was interesting, exciting, melodical i.e. nothing to grab your attention. I just about made it all the way through, I did waver once or twice, so I'll give it the customary 2 stars.
Likely won’t revisit
Bändi oli uusi tuttavuus. Ei jäänyt levyn kuuntelusta mitään mieleen, liian tasapaksua.
Interesting as they jump from British Invasion to 80s vibes within a few songs. Not a good listen but funny song titles.
eh old pervert eh
Hey umm... Mr. Generator? Can we stop giving privilege to the Brits? I'm sure there are so many interesting albums that couldn't fit into the list because there were 700 boring British albums.
Got bored quite quickly

22 - Underwater Moonlight - The Soft Boys - Rating = 2 Do not know this band or this record…. It came out in 2025 so that makes some sense. Sort of a nice rock-ish funky guitar with almost 60’s-ish vocals. Twangy with a groove, sorta nice. Is this a Beach Boys sort of vibe… this is not bad. Insanely Jealous is a little too twangy/spoken-word. Tonight is a little more groovy, soft vocal building… nice little song. You’ll have to go Sideways is a little too jangly, no singing… horns? Strings? Warbly organ? Weird song. Old Pervert… some wailing guitars and a 70’s-ish running vocal… no. The Queen of Eyes might be the Beatles or a less established 60’s group. This is a 10-song 36-minute album… almost like a band figuring out their sound. I’m not sure I’d put this in again so it’s hard to round up.
Pasable, sin pena ni gloria. La primera canción me la guardo. Sería más bien un 2,5, pero tendrá que ser 2 estrellas.
2 sterne
Nah
Some interesting guitar ideas. But overall just not for me.
I don't really know what to make of this record. The lyrics aren't fantastic, the sound is generic, the songs don't tell a story together either. I'm a bit surprised this made the 1K list...
This was, not good.
Not great.
This album annoyed me
I have already forgotten this.
Soft
Not objectionable but I don’t know that I’d include this one in future editions
This was pretty good, I should like it more really, being indie, British, and post punk//
This album would be fine if it weren’t two and a half hours. That was totally unnecessary
I think I would have appreciated this more if I could have listened to it driving around on a warm summer day. It was not great feeding the baby music (save for old pervert, obviously)
Insanely good collection of nu wave songs. But 40 of them? And a 2.5 hour album? A shorter more powerful and poignant album would have carried this better. I gotta ding it massively for that 2 stars at least. Too much of this sound is so boring. But its essence is really well written and produced songs with cool melodies and sounds. Almost borrows from doo wop melodies at times. I dig it.
Soft. Gentle. Ok.but why bother with the retrospective critical acclaim? Not worth it.
Honestly a nothing Burger
I really tried to like it. I really did, but it is so unbelievably long. There is no need for it.
A pleasant album which i forget quickly. Probably will hear it once again, its good music for a car. Definitely its too long for its content, 2.5/5.
The linked album on spotify has 40 tracks. That's way too many for this boring, jangly album.
ok so who had the idea of calling themselves the "soft boys" like wtf man
“Said the spike to the tomato”
That was a lot
A little underwhelming, having then read about other bands, such as R.E.M. that were influeced by this i listened again & could hear some of that, but original doesn't always mean better, later generations can refine & improve
not interested
Wasn't bad to listen to but Jesus H Christ why was it 3 hours long?
Not a big fan of this album, not my vibe.
OK.
Why is this album 40 songs?! Never heard of them and don't feel like I missed out on anything.
Sigh, another mediocre rock band on this list. It wasn't bad, but it really brought me zero joy 🙄
v forgettable (and at 2+ hours, that’s probably not a good sign)
ok...
Another boring British band of lads. Yawn
..
Psychedelic Post-Punk New-Wave Pop with echoes of the 1960s, for example "Positive Vibrations" (which I think is the best track on the album). I've heard better, but I've heard far worse.
No thanks
Tolerable, would have given it a 2.5 if I was able.
🤷 enh
I probably would have kind of enjoyed this except I accidentally listened to a deluxe version while trying to shop at the mall and I wound up listening to an entire song about prawns.
Not bad…not compelling.
2.5 hours of same-y ‘80s alternative. Not unlistenable, but just … fine?
Gave me Beatles vibes... I love The Beatles, but wasn't that into this one
Meh. An innovative production sound that is unfortunately wasted on the worst of the British sardonic lyrics that are celebrated for being insightful and funny when they are truly neither. I can hear where they might have influenced The Stone Roses, REM, and The Pixies, but unfortunately those are not my favorite bands, particularly not from the 1980s. An album that, in my opinion, doesn't belong on this list. Decent, but not good or even great, and since we are all here to hear the best 1001 albums that must not be missed before we die, it comes as a big disappointment. The only track I actually enjoyed was "You'll Have To Go Sideways", where they finally rolled out the 80s synth, and kept it mercifully instrumental only. The rest of the album is the same overrepresentation of British lyrical cyncism, of which this list has too much already. Should have put Katrina and the Waves WALKING ON SUNSHINE on here instead. At least it actually had a hit on it.
Some diverse sounds that sound innovative for the time. However so many different styles left a lot of room for less impressive songs.
2.1
This is weird shit. Started strong and was interesting, but sort of devolved into weird 80s synth brit pop, which is extremely not my shit. There's a song called Old Pervert, which is reminiscent of Donald Trump. Anyway, this is not my shit, but I can hear where its influences were placed over the next 10, 20 and future years. And it's all shit I don't listen to! Keep it. 2. Also, the extended version has like 20 bonus tracks and is more than 2 hours long. lmaoooo.
2.5, just meh for me
It gets boring really quickly.
This seemed like a more experimental version of REM. Unfortunately, I find REM a tad boring and the experimental part was more interesting than it was enjoyable. Not a bad album, but also not worth revisiting.
Meh. DNFed about half the songs, and the other hand were just okay.
british. old school. rock.
2.2 My top review on here is of the Mekon's 'Fear and Whiskey', effectively saying it is a pointless album that doesn't change anything for anybody. This feels like the spitting image of that. Did this really advance music? Did this change anything? Did anyone really like this? It's not terrible, it's just really not good and altogether kind of pointless.
Ok sound
Not memorable
Kingdom of Love is a fairly good tune. Positive vibes has a sweet Sitar riff in it. Fit the "College Rock" genre but are far from being at the top of the genre. I could name 10 better albums in this genre.
Ok 2/5
Indie fucking songs, all okish. Wouldn't really watch them unless they were a support act.
Well, this is random. And what is it with these deluxe editions being ridiculously long?
Not my thijg
Listened to this while cutting the grass over the weekend and the entire time I listened I looked forward to it being done. Not that I outright hated it, I was just sort of bored. Can't bring myself to give a second listen so this is going to sit at a 2 for me.
The Soft Boys may be the worst band name I have ever heard. This sounded exactly how I expected it to from the start. The sitar or whatever string instrument that was in the second or third song was a surprise. Album came and went and I didn't really gain anything from it. You'll have to Go Sideways instrumental was p cool though.
had a banger on it for sure
Nothing noteworthy. The definition of mid. One riff cought my attention slightly
Bit of a shrug. Decent and can see how it was a stepping stone for new sounds
added kingdom of love
Not for me
Fairly underwhelming. A 2.5 if there ever was one. This should be up my street, but it never goes beyond a meh.
2,5
I was intrigued after the first song but then kinda lost interest throughout the next few. I feel like this could have potential, but it’s just another one of those bands who’s singer could make or break it for them and this one was just boring.
2.5 or something like that. idk just feels uninspired and uninteresting to me
Meh 2/5
decent but long
I had a choice of watching a feature length movie or listening to this album. It seems I made the wrong choice.
Very same and repetitive.
Take this mediocre album off the list RIGHT NOW.
I'm starting to think that every band to ever come out of the UK is on this list.
I didn't mind it. But I completely understand why it was a commercial failure at the time of its release and why they broke up not long afterwards.
Meh. 5/10
The Soft Boys are basically all my favorite bands' favorite band, so why do they do so little for me? I guess part of the problem is something like "I Got the Hots" sounds like one of the throwaway tracks Guided By Voices would do for 30 seconds, but it's nearly 5 minutes long! The quality control here isn't very good, and even the good songs feel directly ripped from the 60s (for example, the verses of "I Wanna Destroy You" are basically just the Who's "Much to Much"). As a contrast to the Soft Boys, I'm gonna leave you with a band that proclaims themselves to be the "genuine original hard guys": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2cGKaoL_kws
Bizarre mix of Punk, New Wave, and 60s Psychedelia. Had its moments, but they were few and far between. 2 stars.
Album did not impress me, also way too many tracks. 4.2/10
hmm
Not for me but at least some of the guitar work was interesting. Second song especially!
Okay, this wasn't horrible, but I'd never listen again. Also, what's up with the spotify version having 18 million songs on it?? 2 AND A HALF HOURS?? Who do they think I am??
It’s fine. Just sounds like if the Beatles were worse and considering this came out after the blueprint, what were they doing? 5/10
man for having such a chill album cover their album is a sonic assault 🤨
Meh.. kinda repetitive and boring
meh album but wtf is this cover
The first half of this album is so painfully boring. It is just some standard and bland rock. Thankfully, the second half has some experimentation, with some weird melodies with the guitars. Still, I don't want to listen to this ever again.
Music is easy on the ear while it also has some punch. I had never heard of the soft boys. Almost two and a half hours of soft boys would be a bit much, however the bonus tracks break off after just a few listens.
No idea
2/5⭐ não é horrível, mas depois da metade do álbum fica cansativo por ter muita música
If you put a gun to my head, I'm not sure I could remember anything about this album or any aspect of any song besides the fact that it can't have been so bad as to make me remember hating it.
I was a huge punk fan back in the day (still am) but somehow these guys fell through the cracks as I never heard of them. No great loss - pretty boring generic stuff.
2.0 - Weak
No tengo idea qué escribir sobre esto porque lo olvidé completamente al terminarlo. Nota: 2.1
A cool piece from a less “top of mind” post-punk band. 1980 was a big year, holy.
This band has a foot in the past and one stepping forward. Interesting sound. I don’t hate it, but I’m not Gaga over it.
I was listening to it, and it was okay. But it kept going ... and going ... and ... I checked ... FORTY SONGS? I'm sorry, I just can't ....
just ok
Was decent but damn was this album about 90 minutes too long.
T/m Old Pervert
There are too many 60's albums to get through on here to enjoy an album that sounds like a 60's albums. Not all bad but I wasn't able to appreciate its influence.
Psykrock med lidt punk over det, sikkert indflydelsesrigt men ikke helt deroppe
