# 419 : it wasn't bad, I don't love, I don't hate it. Am I glad I listened to this? I suppose, but who has time to listen to all 40 songs at over 2 hours?. Did I enjoy it? In parts. Will I come back to it? Doubtful.

This just kept going. Would've given it another star if it were half the length.

they're ok. but i'm not insanely fond of that kinda beatles classic rock thingy...

Some fun and interesting moments, but overall very boring and derivative. The singing was particularly unenjoyable, and I found it rather interesting that the best and most musically engaging song on the album was the instrumenta track. Moments of potential that are never fully realized or explored surrounded by a sound that ranges from bland to unappealing. Top tracks: You'll Have To Go Sideways

Not my kinda album. They seem like a generic mix of a bunch of different bands tbh.

Väldigt långt album - 2.5h. Lite roligt och flamsigt

Not sure why this is on here. Just sounds like they listened to too much Rolling Stones. Not memorable

ich verstehe, dass dieses album in den 80ern inspirierte, aber gleich 40 songs mit 2.5h laufzeit? für mich zuviel und ohne highlight.

It's been a long time since I haven't been able to make it through an album, but I am struggling on this one. For some weird reason ... forcing my self to listen to it is actually making me mad. It really does sound like an album someone wrote over a period of time as they slowly descended into madness.

It was enjoyable punk rock, I was having a good time until I scrolled down. 2 hours and 30 minutes is unnecessary, I can't do it. Gets so damn boring after a while.

Poorly produced 80s trash

long as hell, didn't listen all way through. not a bad sound tho

Too many songs that were too similar - enjoyed it got about 20 minutes then it descended into a trudge

Ei kovin laadukasta. En löytäny oikeen mtn tarttumapintaa

Really wanted to like this more.

Not sure why this is on the list, low 2.

Sort of beatlesy landfill 60s pop rock. Thought the attempts to be 'experimental' were pretty dreadful, maybe the Beatles aren't that bad at it after all. Just read the wiki and apparently it was released in 1980 and is considered psychedelic? It's a bit quirky but I wouldn't go that far. Even less impressed now knowing it came out after a whole extra decade of progress. 1.5.

Just ok at best. Some songs weren't terrible, but plenty of them were.

This was fine. Better than expected (I expected nothing), although I just listened to the first 10 songs (the playlist was like 40) and remember nothing.

Jesus fucking christ this was miserable. this is definitely not the worst album we've had but it just really wasn't that good at all and its so goddamn long I dont understand why its on this list and I dont know how anyone listens to this and enjoys it. at least as an album. Some of the songs were fine, but overall I just didn't like it. I think this may have been the least I've enjoyed listening to an album on this list so far. Like it wasn't even comically or offensively bad, at least thats entertaining. This was just bad. edited: I dont know what I was going off about this wasn't that bad. it still wasn't good.

Too many annoying songs

Seems like early 80s to me….

Nice enough

Boring, album sounds like it should have been from the late 60s, not 1980

It's so long! Didn't finish it.

Listened to the original tracklist, not full extended album. Harmony singing style reminded me of the Beach Boys, and the music reminded me of the Yardbirds. Didn't click for me, 2/5.

Great Music - weird lyrics. And 30 bonus tracks??

Sometimes albums are under appreciated gems due to circumstances. Timing, marketing etc etc. Some times the album just isn’t that good.

I didn’t fully connect with this

Bit samy and long

It’s ok. Fun and upbeat. But I only listened to half of the album. It’s so long!! Over two hours. No thank you.

British rock, very Beatles inspired. It was okay.

2.5☆/5 08.15.2024

Long British rock album

Ok. I don't hear why they are influential. Kinda British, kinda Beatles like. Won't seek them out

If you want me to listen to those extra songs from the extended version, fine, but it will remove some stars from your rating...

Missing the appeal

Album review claims there are no dull moments on this album. Agree to disagree, I found the songs pretty repetitive and the lyrics quite mundane.

As jim said … landfill indie

1. deztroy you - 1 2. love - 1.5 3. vibrationz - 1.5 4. hotz - 1.5 5. jealouz - 1 6. tonight - 1.5 7. zideuuayz - 2 8. pervert - 1 9. queen - 1 10. moonlight - 1 11. reptile - 1.5 12. vegetable - 0 13. ztrange - 1.5 14. ztonez - 1 15. prauunz - 1 16. hole - 0 17. dreamz - 1.5 18. znake - 1.5 19. like you - 2 20. zong - 1.5 21. empty girl - 1 22. heart - 1.5 23. toilet - 1.5 24. pervert - 1 25. zmoothie - 1 26. alien - 1.5 27. bloat - 28. moonlight - 29. hair - 30. pig - 31. pervert - 32. 33. 34. 35. 36. 37. 38. 39. 40.

I hear the punk influence, this is a "post-punk" band, you can hear the punk influence in the guitars and bass parts. This has a very Pretenders feel to it, same time period...rock just before New Wave. Listening to all of this music for this project makes me realize that everything is just a mash up of everything else because there's a Pink Floyd/Piper at the Gates of Dawn vibe as well. You can definitely hear the influence on later bands, I'm thinking in particular English Beat. Some of this album seems weirdly out of place, like it's 10 to 15 years after its time. I read REM loved this band and I can hear it on some songs. The opening and final/title track are the weakest on the album, most of everything between is better.

I guess this was influential but it influenced a lot of bands that I also don’t like

40 songs is nasty work

I wanted to like this but something about it rubbed me the wrong way

The album while pleasant isn’t a stand out to me. While I didn’t turn it off (I listened to it on repeat) I didn’t feel the need to turn it up.

Another never-heard-of-them British band that vaguely reminds me of the Stranglers. & given that, I wasn't minding the music. But as the 2+ hour album went on, it rapidly wore out what little goodwill I had.

I don't think British pop is my thing. I can't really tell them apart from the last British pop group.

2, средна работа

80s rock

Not my favourite.

amazing beatles influence

Boring!!

2 and 1/2 hours of Mid.

Fine, not great. Couldn't really get into it.

Pretty great album cover but fuck me boys 40 songs? Nah.

Not for me

Whatever. Didn't like it and it wasn't unpleasant but I'm in a bad mood and this didn't help so 2 stars.

Another English blow up

Did nothing for me.

Bof, un peu insipide, rock anglais de base.

There's a few ok tracks on this album, nothing special, and certainly nothing significant about this post punk 1980s group, and the music, although had grass roots of promise... it was all very poorly executed and produced. I'd never heard of these guys before, and I grew up in the 80s, and i was very into my music bak in the day, so I'd say they weren't that popular.

Another example of one good song not constituting a noteworthy album. Saved: I wanna destroy you 2.2

Kind of like the Beatles, but not as good

Lame and boring

Literally what was that

Not my favorite. It felt like a bunch of songs about random things that did not all go together. Some of the songs were good, most were not. I don’t see how this was a pivotal album in any sense.

Interesting middle ground of like the Beatles, rolling stones, and beach boys. Not as interesting as any of them... Just fine.

An album that is on this list because it inspired other amazing artists is not a good sign going into to from my experience so far. I'm not sure what psychedelic rock entails, kinda get the vibe in positive vibrations. This is enjoyable, not bad, but also not outstanding, reminds me of late Beatles/George Harrison. A whole lot of blah. 2* Only the stones remain: Rolling stones vibes, was that the intent? HOLY FUCK, 40 SONGS?? 2.5 hrs of this? Yo, cut the crap, trim it to the good stuff. Oh, maybe it's all these bonus tracks that are unique to Spotify? The longer this went on, the less points I wanted to give it. But it doesn't suck completely, so 2*. I had to stop at track 22, this album kept giving me anxiety. Maybe I will finish it tomorrow. Got through the non-bonus tracks anyway.

Tämä bändi pääsee niin pitkälle kuin 60-lukua fanittava uuden aallon bändi voi päästä ilman todellista inspiraatiota. Poikkeus: Insanely Jealous of You - ihmeen toimiva renkutus. 2,5.

I would have rated this album a 3 but it was 2.5 hours long. Who do they think they are. No thanks.

Probably a 3 based on the good songs, but since they thought they had two hours of content, gotta give it a 2. Could easily be condensed into something good. Will I listen to again: 1%

enough 3 2

I completely missed these guys at the time.... Kinda ok- a mash-up of Glam meets New wave?

Nothing offensive but just not for me.

Fun album, but idk if I needed to hear it before I died.

This wasn't great, but not terrible either. I wasn't a big fan. 2/5

Áhugavert að vissu leyti. Dálítið out of sorts m.v. tímann.

folk avec une touche latin forgettable 5/10

Maybe spend more than $10 on your next album.

It's not too punk, for better and worse. I was moderately enjoying it until I sensed Beatles and got agitated

A bit too tame and beach-y for me.

When I received this album as my album for the day I was horrified to see that it was over two and a half hours long, which meant that rather than sitting down and making notes on each track I was forced to replace my daily listening with it. It wasn't until I made a google search that I realised that the original album was only ten tracks long, and that for some reason under spotify you can only get the extra-long dulux extended twice whatever version. This made sense as the first ten songs sounded like actual album tracks. After this is trailed off into complete nonsense, the singer has this annoying way of trailing off from singing to talking, like Jarvis Cocker but if he was a massive bellend. Lyrics are some dreadful attempt at surrealism but it just sounds stupid and annoying, instuments are pretty samey throughout.

The Soft Boys sound like Sgt. Pepper era Beatles mixed with REM. The highs are high, but the lows are low too. There's a lot of psychadelic exploration going on on this album. Also, 40 songs is way too much for an album. By the end of the almost 2.5hr runtime I had really lost focus and was just wishing for it to be over. Favourite songs: Wey Wey Hep Uh Hole, Positive Vibrations, I Wanna Destroy You, Queen of Eyes, There's Nobody Like You Least favourite songs: Insanely Jealous of You, Old Pervert, He's a Reptile, Vegetable Man, Strange, Like a Real Smoothie, She Wears My Hair, Leave Me Alone 2/5

Weird, kinda fun but not memorable

I only listened to the original 10 track release. Didn't want to sit through the 2.5hr Spotify version. Thought it was fine

Music was fine, album was an hour and a half too long

Fine but too long

Can see why it was influential. Can also see why no-one listens to it now.

Nobody wants two hours of bonus songs. That's like 2 extra albums at least

This is a long listen and so far, not hearing anything out of the ordinary. Very jingly, jangly.

I mean, whatever, man.

a lackluster album, but truly not the worst i've heard. i could hear some of the influence that the replacements took from the soft boys' underwater moonlight. the replacements are more solidly punk, whereas the soft boys were a kind of light punk. on a weird note, i couldn't determine if "positive vibrations" was a take off from the beach boys' "good vibrations". the inclusion of the sitar made me think that. though a sitar is not present on "good vibrations," it does contain a lot of unusual experimental sounds.

This was a fairly unique listen in so much as that it really seemed to live somewhere between the new wave of the 80s and psychedelia of the 60s. It's definitely not bad, but overall, I was pretty underwhelmed with the album. Anyway, this was a fairly unique sound, but without much delivery power.

this isn't offensively bad, I just don't like anything I hear british rock

I couldn’t remember listening to this one - the cover art was the most memorable thing about it I’m afraid

This looks dumb. I think it's gonna be dumb. Ok yeah it's dumb. Punky garage rock with fake vocal harmonies, dumb lyrics, not much else going on. Another big hit for the must hear before you die book. 2/5.

I suppose it’s good. I just didn’t care about any of it.

Juxtaposing harmonies with lyrics about insects laying eggs under the skin or the stream of consciousness lyrics of I Got the Hots, The Soft Boys are not pleasant to listen to but at least they are not boring.

Why do like a third of these albums all sound the same

Oddly intriguing for a few tracks. I hear some Beach Boys and some Beatles influences. I also heard I Got The Hots and Insanely Jealous Of You, which take the album off the rails. No thanks.

Tried it twice - it was OK, but nothing remarkable, and not worth recommending to Spike, who loves the bands they're supposed to have influenced

Forgotten at the time. Will be forgotten in the future.

I'm not getting this

I’d prefer to never hear this again. 3/10

The Soft Boys are unexpected, and victims of other forms of confusion. The initial impression of the record is of extremely common elements, balanced by the absolutely dirtied wall of the second side. Post-punk-ish undertones suggest more about the early material as well, but it's all muddle.

This did nothing for me. I’ve learned that I don’t really like any kind of Punk music.

4 hours - didn’t even start

I didn't really like this album. I don't really like the singer's voice, but I can't put my finger on why. The music also felt off, but some songs were just ok. Overall, I probably won't listen to this album again. 2/5 Favorite song: Positive Vibrations Worst song: Insanely Jealous of You

Not very memorable

Very unusual but some tracks ok but largely forgettable

I'm not a big fan of this genre, but Tonight and Queen of Eyes were quite nice.

2. All of this Brit pop is starting to sound exactly the same.

Pas trippé honnêtement

This sounded like the unpublished 2nd soundtrack to Rocky Horror. An interesting addition for the era.

Boring. V v boring.

Disclaimer: I only listened to the album before the bonus tracks. I don't need to listen to this again. It blends some key aspects of the Velvet Underground with early 80s synths and riffs. There isn't much special about this album in my opinion. While it isn't horrible, I have no real takeaways and nothing to come back to. Best Songs: I Got the Hots, You'll Have to Go Sideways, Worst Songs: Positive Vibrations, Insanely Jealous of You, Queen of Eyes

I dk if the album is as good as the 2-3 songs on it

So, according to Wikipedia, the only reason for this album to be considered in any way is due to the influence it had on some bands that are more worth listening. Also, it is most notable for combining some elements of artists that are more worth listening. Got it.

Not really impressed. Sounds okay but very generic. Nothing really pops up.

Easily forgettable and pretty repetitive throughout. Hard to see why this was such an influential post-punk record.

I have a high tolerance for - and often find deep joy in - jangly 60s-influenced slightly-psychedelic guitar pop music, but I didn’t get on with this at all. There’s the odd great moment where a chorus explodes and the harmonies kick I. (Eg underwater moonlight) but the songwriting smacks of a bad sixth form band.

There’s a lot of early pink floyd in this. And I like Floyd. And some Beatles? But nah, not one for me

A 1980 neo-psychedelic album. - I Wanna Destroy You – I don’t like it. Kinda repetitive. It’s a rage song that doesn’t have the teeth and venom to really hit. It’s also unclear why the want to destroy whoever it is they do. They give reasons like war, media, etc, but without clarity it seems to be raging against the generic mainstream, and that’s lame and dumb. - Kingdom of Love – Nice bass intro. Imagery is gross and weird. I don’t like this one. - Positive Vibrations – I really hate the brief solo here. Not my jam. - I Got the Hots – I really dislike the lyrics here. Ok, riff, but not anything I haven’t heard done better. The vocals are also bad. - Insanely Jealous of You – Certainly a unique song. But also not good. The line “I just can’t let it OUT” is absolutely atrocious to hear. - Tonight – Utterly forgettable. - You’ll Have to Go Sideways – Mediocre instrumental. Main riff is fine (albeit extremely repetitive, but the synths get annoying.) - Old Pervert – Gross. Even if it’s mocking the subject matter, it’s still gross. I don’t like the music much either. - Queen of Eyes – Weird but inoffensive. The song that at first blush I like best since it’s just weird and has decent guitar. Still don’t like it enough to add to a playlist, but it’s not awful. - Underwater Moonlight – Bass intro is decent. Weird psychedelic song, but decent. The general vocal style on this isn’t appealing to me. It’s like y they’re going for Beetles style harmonies, but lacking the skill to do it in a pleasant sounding way. The bizarre inflections are obviously intentional, but the effect is really unpleasant. The tone on the guitar is also not really my thing. The musicianship is competent but not really appealing to me. In general, nonsensical lyrics and oftentimes off-putting imagery is also not my thing. So much of this band is doing mildly interesting things that run very contrary to my preferences. At its best, its inoffensive but bland English rock. At its worst, its incoherent nonsense delivered in the most jarring and offputting way possible. Not a single song on this that I’d add to my playlists. The last two songs are the best of the bunch and save it from being bottom tier, but even they’re not that good. Maybe I need more drugs to appreciate it.

Very hit and miss. Mostly misses.

Was decent but not stellar. Can see influences for indie rock and other 90s music. Is this punk blended with new wave? I do like how it feels raw around the edges.

This was way too long.

The album is unremarkable.

Didn't think it was anything too special

Listened to it a few times and haven't made a decision on this one yet. 2/5 for now.

Lose a point for making me listen to a 2.5 hour album 4/10

Sem nada marcante, talvez uma ou outra instrumental .

pretty blank on this one, would not play it again

Sometimes listenable, sometimes just to noisy. Regardless, 40+ years later, it's hard to find it special

It was not memorable, granted the Friday songs get written on Monday reviews so most are not.

Was Ok but a bit samey and forgettable. Might enjoy repeat listens but I zoned out mid-way through and didn't even realise when it began replaying songs

somewhat like cheap trick.... but maybe mixed with the beatles?

Dull and Really long

Never heard this before, though the band name sounded familiar. Yeah its grand, like I don't completely hate it, some elements I like, when it sounds a bit more new wave/proto punk, but the more psychadelic elements, the echoey vocals, the hammed up english accents, are not my jam. Would not listen again.

well, it sure as hell did not make me hard

Catchy from the get go, made me laugh. Positive vibrations sidhar :) A bit cringy. "Would you care for a lump of steak... or a piece of hake". You cringe and then you genuinely laugh. Some songs reminded me of Tim Mitchen or Bill Bailey. The longer it went on the less interested I became though. Maybe influential bringing 60s sound to young 80s kids. I won't be listening again though. Maybe a song or two but not the whole album.

Not my style

Enjoyed the angular Richard Hell via Beefheart aspects. The rest of it I could take it leave.

It was okay.

One or two decent psychedelic songs, but largely forgettable

Verassend, ik kende dit totaal niet. Begon wel een beetje te vervelen op den duur.

Not impressed.

Begon aardig maar kon m'n aandacht uiteindelijk niet vasthouden.

Washed over me a bit.

Rock with alguna ida de olla. Cantante regular

not bad but probably won't listen to it again

Por lo que alcance a escuchar ni está tan malo pero nada espectacular.

Not really my style

too long, over 2 hrs long. catchy choruses but the lyrics are pretty silly.. aka - he's a reptile, vegetable man

Not an album I needed to hear before I died

Starts off good, makes a hard crash

Das hat mich irgendwie aggressiv gemacht.

Too bloated

2 plus hours of British psych rock. You must be out of your freaking mind. There is no way I’m wasting my morning on this shit. 5 songs in and I was like not a chance bruh

In a nutshell: going sideways. The only thing going for Underwater Moonlight is that you can connect the dots between The Soft Boys and R.E.M, Pixies and future jangle pop acts. Synth-pop and post punk was "in". This kind of music was not really hip in 1980. Overall: 2/10

Indulgence

40 SONGS AND I DIDN’T LIKE A SINGLE ONE SHITE

If this list is going to force me to listen to a 2.5 hour long album, at least make it something interesting and not boring British pop rock that sounds like it released 10 years too late

Te schel geluid voor mij. Niet fijn om te luisteren

I didn’t notice anything that special about this. The singer couldn’t sing. By the end of the album it grated on me. Low 2, or high 1? A 1.

TOO FUCKING LONG

Couldn't finish it, just not for me!

who put this on the list

2 and a half hours for some bullshit. The quality was terrible to start with and it wasn’t anything interesting at all. Fav Song: 3.9/10 1.9/5

Absolutely not my kinda music, boring guitar dudes sound

Just too many of these British bands of this time and genre, not my favorite, and I still can’t tell them apart.

This album just did not grab me. I kept on checking to see how many more songs to go.

Ugh - yikes.

This was a mediocre 2, but when I saw the 40 tracks it immediately became a 1. This album and band might be a social experiment to see if people will like anything just because a magazine critic said it is relevant or something.

Warum sollte man das gehört haben? I don’t see it

Big ol meh

Boring. No.

Couldn't even finish the first quarter of the album. On Spotify, their biggest song (which I didn't like either) is the very first song on the album and it seems like it's all downhill from there. When I started this, I told myself that I was going to listen to every album to the fullest, even if I wasn't enjoying. Nope. This killed that. I mean, I wasn't having a good time AND it's 2.5 hours long.

Why is it so long?

It was hard to listen to the Soft Boys. Not sure why they made the list.

First listen

Its a weird one, reminds me of a few other artists that I like, but I'm not so sure when you combine them all the result works.

40 songs?!?!?! And I only liked 1.. enough said.

40 songs? Please end my agony.

Over 2 hours?!?

These albums do suffer from being quite similiar to each other. Is this the kinks? The soft boys? Some other english speaking rock band with the same sound? I can't tell them apart! Gotta stop listening to this, it is putting me to sleep.

Oubliable et interminable. Quand on est aussi quelconque, on peut au moins se donner l'élégance de la brièveté

1.25 stars. So 1. Would've been a 2 if not for being TWO HOURS L ON G nice beginning but gets samey too quick

Who listens to this?

Sorry, to me, nothing new, groundbreaking or genre-definjng here. Not a must hear...

Einfluss oder nicht. Mir egal, ich finde die Platte echt nicht hörenswert.

Schrott.

Not for me. 1/5

Pretty Soft from the Soft Boys - wasn't in the mood for these funstars

2.5 hours and none of it is special in any way. Wtf is this.

I didn't like the recording quality - it sounded underwater. Just not for me - overly long, not particularly entertaining. The different versions of Old Pervert were very unnecessary. 1 seems harsh, but I just didn't have a nice time listening.

Terrible.

I couldn't finish this.

The Soft Boys? You bet they are... 0/5

The disconcerting cover was a clue. This is icky and I felt like I was listening to the record collection of Jimmy Savile. Then the titles of the next 39 tracks added dread to that. The lyrics are a nauseating string of chiches. I check. Yep.. As I suspected. This perversion is English. Anyway, I Not in the mood for disgust or listening to other people's hated today. Aborted at track 3. Trust your instincts.

I started this album sort of liking a couple songs but as it went on, the songs got worse and worse. They started sounding like demo tracks for songs, with placeholder lyrics that they would eventually rewrite and double back to, but never did and left us with half-baked lyrics such as "Wey wey hep uh hole" and "where are the prawns" repeated over and over again. I gave up halfway because I had already wasted too much time on this crap and there was no way I could endure the full 2.5 hours that this album lasts. Before checking the wiki in the global reviews, my prediction is this band is British, which is why it is included on the list, despite being incredibly sub-par and unnecessary. Don't bother with this album. Unless you hate yourself, do something better with your time, like huff some gasoline and stare at the wall for a couple hours. That will be more fun than subjecting yourself to this trash.

MID!!!!!!!

Yeah nah.

Eh nothing special. I don't really care for it

forgetable blurb NNN

Uninspired wandering through punky mood swings, I did not enjoy this album. There are some great melodic ideas that were not fleshed out to be something truly lasting. The lyrics, though interesting, mean nearly nothing. And when they do mean something, it’s disturbingly perverted.

Really?

Longest album of all time.

nondescript. not worth a listen. just play the beatles instead.

So if you’ve ever had a random thought like “I wonder what a folk new-wave punk band sounds like”, then this album is the definitive answer to that question. Generic and uninspiring in every way.

This was way too long for an album that just was not good. This was not worth the 2 hours in gave it will not be looking them up any time soon.

wanted to skip this album many times. took me 4 days to listen to it because whenever i put a song on I had to turn it off a minute later

I don't like it

way too long of an album, I’m sad that you can’t seem to enjoy psychedelic albums without also being off your tits Some of these songs are plain bad, if they reduced it to like 30 minutes I could see this being ok, but I wouldn’t ever recommend this album

I listened to too much of this

This is definitely a case of less is more 2 and 1/2 hours is beyond excessive. A hour in and it felt like I was listening to the same song over and over again. I cannot hear the big deal of this one.

O album tem 10 musicas e dai mais 30 bonus. Todas as 40 sao iguais.

Absolutely shite. Why is it on this list?

nothing special

Does not age well

Eh, pretty bland honestly. Not very engaging.

Achei podre

Definitely not for me, way way too long (2.5 hr) surfer punk jams 2/10

Unlistenable, bland, boring. Also kinda gross.

This album is really not my thing and I had HUGE difficulties listening to it.

Not feeling it at all. 0/5

Really liked the first song but they all started to sound the same after that and couldn’t get through all 170 songs to be honest
