It's fine. Lyrics are decent, beats are on par for mid-90s rap. Ranking this a little lower given the context of this being "1001 albums to listen to before you die", as to me this feels like a plain rap album from one of the members of wu tang

This was pretty solid, but a good example of why production matters so much. By my money, I felt like the vocals were so hidden behind the amped up bass that I could hardly understand anything, and without a balanced treble on top, everything just felt really sedated and homogenous. That being said, this was still damn cool and a pleasure to listen to. I was not as impressed with Method Man's debut album as I thought I would be. He is one of the better MCs from the clan but RZA's beats were too stripped down and dirty for my taste. I do like the continuation of incorporating Wu-Kung-Fu styles though. Taking into consideration all lyrics and production, Tical is just some t(yp)ical early 90s hip-hop. Method gets better with subsequent releases. For this record...1.95 stars.

2.75. Love Meth, but this was always my least favorite solo premier release from members of the Wu. Was hoping I’d change my mind or have something more click with today’s listen but it did not.

It seemed like ordinary rap music to me. Nothing in particular stands out from the rest.

This made me sad. I typically like hip-hop...but the underground mumbo jumbo doesn't do it for me and I had a hard time getting through it.

This is #day493 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… Method Man is a name that rings a bell from my childhood. I can't say I've ever listened to anything from his roster, though. This particular album is an OK '90s hip-hop, but I found it less enjoyable than another Wu-Tang member's solo record, which I got just a couple of days ago. This is a 2 out of 5. Looking forward to #day494.

Poetry? Protest? Purpose?

Loving the rap introduction the 1001 is giving me. But this album isn't landing. Pretty much downhill after the Mussorsky quote at the start.

I didn’t like this. I prefer my hip hop to have more hooks and quirks than. It’s very polished and has lots of layers, but this just isn’t for me. It’s not bad, I’m just not into it.

Same beat for every song, I can barely understand what they're saying, what is even special about this. The occasional vocals made this somewhat tolerable but apart from that it was pretty crap. 1.8

“Biscuits” was tracked and mixed really poorly, the bassline overwhelms Method Man’s voice. At least “Sub Crazy” acknowledged this projects obsession with sub bass and did something interesting with it. I don’t think we’d see echoey, trippy vocals like this until the onset of cloud rap in the 2010’s. It took until “Release Yo Delf” for my ears to perk up for something. Finally, Method Man shows some life and variance in his flows and delivery. Fantastic interpolation of the I Will Survive melody. Method Man is really great when he (or his features) is flying off the handle, like on “Mr. Sandman”. Sadly, there is very little of that, especially on the front half; credit to Tical for keeping some of its most interesting songs till the end, but too little, too late. Far too mellow and doesn’t do much to poke its head out from the sea of other WTC albums or solo projects that would follow on this list. 2/5

Over pretentious (how many wutang samples do you need to put?) Boring (one song = one beat) Mindless (or maybe the texts were good? Couldn't understand because for some reasons even the sparse layering made it impossible to understand most of it). And then the commenter here claiming that only people who understand the genre and can spot the differences are allowed to criticize - that's exactly the type of l33t shit that makes me hate that genre.

Rap is a funny old game. After the first couple of tracks I was beginning to sort of enjoy Method Man's delivery and the clever use of samples to build a song. But then he, like most modern rappers, began to invite a merry old crew of poor performers to join him on vocal duties, which instantly destroyed that [for want for a better word] connection I was starting to feel with him. Why do they do this? Do these confident sounding men have confidence issues? Do they like to sabotage their own work as some sort of joke? Or are they just being charitable, by helping out the less fortunate? Whichever it is, it affects the amount of stars I'm going to give him. Im sure Mr Man will be heart broken when he sees this, but instead of a 3 star, its a 2.

I want to like Wu-Tang more than I actually do like Wu-Tang. This one is particularly dated-sounding. Very 1994. I guess I prefer him as a guest or teaming up with Redman than as a front man on his own.

A fine hip-hop album

…so maybe it is just my mood but I didn’t get the popularity of this album. It’s okay for a rap album from the mid 1990s but there was nothing that grabbed me in historical context, lyrical power of musical innovation. Matter of fact, one of the negative critiques I always heard about Dr. Dre was his slow lackadaisical style, which this entire album exudes. The songs All I need and Release Yo’Delf are the only two standouts. I liked the combo jazz/blaskspoitation style with military-cadence drumming and police sirens in the background to give it a “real” feeling. Again, not bad an album, but not exceptional in the chronicles of musicology.

Ik noemde een aantal keer dat de Wu-Tang-leden gered worden door de variatie die automatisch volgt uit de samenwerking tussen de verschillende leden. In dit geval is de hulp van anderen relatief beperkt. Het brengt in elk geval niet zoveel. Nu is Method Man een rapper met een eigen stemgeluid. Dus het zal ook gewoon meer effect hebben als hij bijspringt bij een ander dan andersom. Het meest exemplarische nummer van dit album is Release Yo'Delf. De rap is prima gebracht met lichte stijlvariaties waar dat een meerwaarde biedt. Maar de muziek (de vrolijke toeter met een beatje) erachter voelt geforceerd en dun. Dat wordt nog een bevestigd als je de rap wel wat meer muzikale body meegeeft, zoals in de mix van de Prodigy, die als bonustrack op het album staat (en ik dus niet mee mag tellen). De rap komt dan ineens veel meer tot zijn recht. Het is precies wat ik mis bij dit album.

There are a lot of interesting textures here. And, well, lyrics that haven’t held up that well in the last 30 years. Also, if you’re going to sample “I Will Survive,” you shouldn’t leave the listener wishing he’d just spent four minutes with the far, far better original.

I mean, it’s old school. I can see why it’s influential, can see a lot of artists took from it.

Not my favorite Wu-Tang solo effort. A bit nondescript but it had a nice groove to it so it was very listenable.

Still not vibing with hip hop

It seemed really quite and difficult to make a lot out. Excited to hear original version of Bring the pain, but the cover I know better runs faster. Was kind of bored with this one.

Purely quality, speed and ability to make a nice dark flow is really good. Good beats and mixing. But I also honestly don't get half of what he is saying (not because I can't hear the exact words he is saying), it seems like he is just bragging about himself, calling other people really disgusting names and singing about drugs. Looking up different critiques talking about how awesome he is and how socially conscious he is, I might be missing a lot of meaning and context because I lack the life experiences to understand. Not all music is made for me and my experience, and I highly respect that but for today I just don't know how I feel about this one.

I don't know if I can properly rate this. It's too far down the gangsta rap rabbit hole. I don't think it's a terrible album and unlistenable, however I'll probably never listen to it again on purpose.

That was fun to play in the background while I did morning chores. Technically it had cool flow and great hooks, I just did not identify with the content material.

I’m not a big rap or hip hop fan. I didn’t like this one. Some of the pop culture references that were sprinkled throughout the album were interesting but, not enough for me to listen to this again.

Another one that proves this is not for me.

An entertaining listen but not really my thing. I don’t think myself a prude but songs that use the N word heavily are off-putting. The songs from other artists that came on spotify after this album completed were actually more immediately catchy and engaging. 2/5

Yay another 90s rapper. I swear this is the third wu-tang solo album i’ve had, yet still no 36 chambers.

Kind of blended together. Didn't stand up to Fishscales or Wu Tang classic records for me

I have seen Wu Tang in concert twice and Method Man 3 times with Redman. I am a hip-hop fan through and through but Wu and the affiliates have never done it for me. I think they all have great tracks together, solo, and as features, but they don't really put together good albums. Meth has some classics and amazing features, but this album is not very good. I know part of the allure of Wu is their raw, rough, and rugged style of rap and production, but it is hard to sit through an hour of it for me. Rza growth over his career as a producer is amazing. Meth is the cool and popular member of Wu, but he really isn't the most talented or creative. Rae is a word smith, Ghost is a stoytelling poet, Rza and Gza have crazy analytical brains, Deck has great flow, ODB was a larger than life personality, Masta is well rounded but nothing special and U-God is well, a member. But Meth has style and charisma on stage and on a screen (that's why he has starred in many TV and movies). Wu as a whole has been very influential and Meth is a huge part of that and I don't hate, or even dislike their music, but it just gets put on a pedestal that I don't think it is deserving of. With all that, this album is a pretty poor showing for an all-time type hip-hop artist. IMO there are at least 50 hip-hop albums better than this (one of them being his first album with Redman), and that is being kind to Iron Lungs. 4.1/10 91/1001

I'm clearly not the intended audience here, so feel free to disregard this rating. All I can give is my gut reaction, which is to hope I'm never forced to listen to this again. I hope others enjoy it, though.

Some sinister, dissonant beats. Repetitive. Odd mixing, sometimes the instrumentals seem too loud and distract from the vocals. Probs won’t listen to this again.

It's like the Wu-Tang sound without the rest of the Clan. Meth has a good flow on this album. The beats are good. The tracks seem a bit busy. It's a fine album and definitely has its influence on much of what was to come, especially out of the East Coast hip hop scene.

I think RZA really improved with time. This just sounded really muddy for the most part and had that same problem that solo Wu Tang stuff often has in that I wanted a bit more variety

I appreciate the skill this guy has but it doesn’t connect with me, wish I did know how to like this album but the back beats get boring to me

"What's that? Method Man, speak up! I can't hear you! Method Man - SPEAK UP!" I could barely the hear man at times. I mean geeze what was that mix? And the bass - my god! I had it mixed down in my car. I can only imagine how it must've drowned out everything else with it at normal levels. I've had two Wu-Tang-adjacent albums now (the other from Raekwon) and I just don't think I get them. The meandering lyrics that just go on and on, and the backing tracks are all similar enough that it's difficult at times to discern between the tracks themselves. There's no real hook, no chorus. Nothing repeats, so it's hard to follow in terms of structure. I dunno. If this is what Wu-Tang is, I don't think I like Wu-Tang. And that would be a bummer, given how much rap and hip-hop I've had through this list that I actually have come to adore. Two stars. Please be more interesting next time. Somehow, all tracks sound similar. Basically the beat is always the same, never changes significantly. Same bpm, same rhythm. Boring.

It's not my thing. There's some good rhymes in there in places, but it's really grimy and lo-fi. When you compare it to the Ghostface Killah album I got, that had real energy and smacked you about the chops. This is just a bit limp. At least it's not full of shitty skits.

Whatever. This dude doesn't rap impressively, can barely understand him (although that may be because of the production as well), and the lyrics are (shocker) pretty bland and trashy. I don't get the hype and if this is what the Wu-Tang Clan sounds like I'm not impressed.

Hip hop is known to be an impressive display of sound production when done correctly. If the only hip hop you had ever heard was this album, you never would have known. On top of that, this dude's voice is TERRIBLE, and that says a lot considering hip hop is not known for its singing talent.

I love Method Man's voice and flow, but the 'experimental' approach for a lot of this, sounding like two completely different tracks playing simultaneously, was disconcerting and didn't really draw me in. I can hear the intent, but am not sure it works, in the main.

Sadly not the style of hip-hop/rap I ever really respond well to so probably not the best judge but didn’t take any enjoyment from this at all really. Only bit that stood out/stuck with me at all was the (I think purposeful??) homage to I will survive on release yo’ delf.

I grew up a teenager in the 90’s addicted to grunge and alternative music. I enjoy old school 80’s rap but not really anything past that. I like the beat samples on this album but I think his vocal mix is poor and all the songs have a same tempo or energy. The album is ok, not terrible and not great.

Meh. What am a I missing here? It doesn’t have enough funk for good hip hop, beats don’t hit all that hard till towards the end, and the lyrics aren’t giving me anything deep.

I'm afraid I wasn't very interested in Tical by Method Man. Some lyrics were so dated, which happens frequently in hip hop albums of the eighties and nineties, so I wasn't surprised. And I'll be the first to admit I'm not a huge fan of hip hop, though I can recognize how this album's sound was influential! But I guess I don't see how this album was different in comparison to albums by Wu-Tang Clan and the other members.

Like most Wu Tang Clan and Wu Tang Clan member solo albums, I find this work to be fairly unique among hip hop albums of the time, but it's still relatively not for me. That said, the uniqueness sort of begins to fade when you consider that all Wu Tang and Wu Tang member solo albums basically sound like this. Nonetheless, that solo artist behavior all started here! High 2, but not quite a 3 for me.

Run of the mill 90’s hip hop. Not bad, just not a standout IMO. There’s so many awesome records of this time that will most definitely be left behind because the artist wasn’t in a popular group. 1001 really be throwing any solo records of all the big bands.

As much as I love Method and Wu-tang this album lacks some punch. I feel it is the beats and producers fault cause the lyrics are insanly great. I own this CD and heard it a bit but never got into it.

With all the N words, swearing and tough talk I figured this guy must be a bad ass. But apparently he’s just a successful musician and actor who grew up playing la cross. Go figure.

Boring. Production is so flat and forgettable. Not for me.

Personal preference aside, this album wasn't anything more than what it was trying to be. At least this didn't have 15-20 minutes worth of filler (aka "skits") like with Ghostface Killah's album. This just isn't my jam.

I think Method Man is very charismatic but not always the best rapper. The production here was mostly forgettable. As one of the first solo Wu records, no one is mistaking this for Ghostface or Raekwon.

I don't really like Method Man's delivery and the beats here were a little dull.

The rapping was very good, but what limited the greatness of this album were the backing tracks, which were often strange and dark sounding. I feel like his rapping would be better complemented by funkier beats, including different drum loops, better bass melodies, and catchy choruses. Nevertheless, it was interesting to be exposed to the Method Man, an artist I had never before listened to.

With the exception of bring the pain, this was a collection of dreary beats an nonsensical verses. 2 stars for me

This has to be one of the most forgettable hip-hop albums I've gotten so far, which seems to be a theme with Wu-Tang's solo albums. Each song just feels the exact same after a while, and I'm not a fan of the raspy-ness of his voice in long sessions. This just feels like it covers the exact things that the GZA album I listened to already covered. Not terrible, but entirely forgettable, save for a bar or two.

I didn't mind listening to this. It sounds cool throughout, but no songs really broke through and connected with me. Wouldn't mind hearing this again, but I don't plan to return to it.

Outside my usual listening sphere, as most hip-hop and rap tends to be, so good for me to give it a listen. Some engaging stuff here, but I must confess to my untrained and unconditioned ear, after a while the tracks sound a bit too similar to each other. I do want to get more into this genre, and this project has introduced me to some great examples, so I'll keep pushing.

Method Man is a legend but this album was not my favorite. Some of the tracks were cool but a little too underground for my liking. 2.5/5

I listened to it all and I still just don’t get rap. Some friends and I briefly got into Bone Thugz n Harmony back in the day and a bit of Tupac and I remember digging both of those and some Eminem hits I’ve heard but my hope with this project was it might illuminate something in me that recognizes the draw but that hasn’t happened yet.

There’s been some really good hip hop come up on this list, but, this really isn’t one of those. It’s dreary, unimaginative, posturing. It’s like the death metal equivalent of rap, more for effect than for music. And like death metal I expect this to be mainly popular with 15 year old boys. And why do only women get to sing ? Why aren’t males allowed to sing ?

This was really not what I was expecting at all- it started off different than it ended and it was interesting. It honestly wasn’t bad- if I had more time to experience it and listen multiple times I could learn to like it however I don’t have that time so for now I’ll give it potential.

Lyrically, vocally, musically, there were very few bits of this album that left an impression. I don't think it's bad per se, but I can't see what makes it great. To me it's pretty samey and sorely lacking in standout tracks. I feel like I found more to enjoy on OB4CL and Liquid Swords but to be honest, none of the Wu-Tang solo albums have impressed me much. I guess their sound just ain't for me.

A better actor than rapper based on this album. The music is underwhelming and uninspired. His character Cheese from The Wire deserved to be unceremoniously executed by Slim Charles, but that’s because Method Man played the a-hole so well.

Debuutalbum van Wu-Tang Clan lid Method Man. Tical - een acroniem voor Taking Into Consideration All Lives - is een soloproject, hoewel meerdere andere Wu-Tang leden features hebben. Geen bijzonder leuk of noemenswaardig album. leukste nummer: Release Yo' Delf Wu-Tang producer RZA leverde alle beats. De leden moesten "battlen" over de beats als een vorm van quality control. Het nummer "Meth vs. Chef" is zo'n battle tussen Method Man en Raekwon (The Chef).

I like a couple of the tracks, (Bring The Pain, All I Need), but wasn't really into the rest of it.

Doesn’t push above the surface for me - several tracks had notable beats and great lyrics, but as a whole I never felt the album coalesced into something which demanded my attention (as one would expect for a Wu-Tang product)

Another immemorial hip hop artist. I didn’t notice quite so much bad language and as I was doing something else it was largely listenable but not great so another 2* at best !

I tried my hardest to evaluate this properly. The beats and sampling I can get behind very easily. If I close my eyes and tune out the vocals it’s pretty okay. But listening to song after song after song with that same tedious muttering is enervating.

In the spirit of really keeping an open mind, I decided to really really try with this rap album. I had to toughen up my conviction by the time I hit track 4 (All I Need). By track 6 (Meth vs. Chef) I realize rap is a culture I can't relate to. Track 8 (Release Yo'Delf) I'm just breathing through the situation and trying to get to the end of this album. Track 12 (Stimulation) Wait...didn't Method Man do that "Get High" song. I liked that one. Track 13 (Method Man) Maybe if I were high I would like this more? I'm ok leaving this world without listening to anymore Method Man. Postscript: It's Afroman who does the song Because I Got High. That's a good one.

The minor key made this a more challenging listen to me. Rap is a genre that I am not predisposed to love, so when I do there is usually something that stands out or is more melody-oriented. I did get a bit of that on my favorite track off this album, “Release Yo’ Delf,” with its musical reference to “I Will Survive” and horn-sounding backing instrument, which lightened things up a bit. It was the most interesting track to me. I am not the audience for this rap album. Not something I enjoyed listening to or will revisit again.

Ok, con esto he aprendido que hay muuuuchas muchas variantes del rap y hip hop, y sobre todo, que hay unas variantes más oscuras y "hardcore" que me parecen aún más difíciles. Si algo hay de acompañamiento musical, todo es tonos menores y disonancias. Los sampleos de gritos, moscas, cosas difíciles. Por otro lado, rescato que tiene un estilo de rapeo mucho más entendible que al de otros que hablan como retrasados.

I am beginning to notice a trend in the thoughts I have towards the 1990's rap/hip hop albums that I have received on this list so far. I ended up giving all of them (this one, Sex Packets, and Come Find Yourself) a 2 mostly because I just don't connect with them very well. I feel that I don't completely understand the appeal of the genre and cannot appreciate the difference between rappers/styles of rap. There are some rare circumstances where rap will really connect with me, but 'Tical' is unfortunately not one of those cases. Outside of a couple of cool samples here and there as well as consistent performances throughout, there was nothing really distinguishable here which really hurt it for me. All of the beats sound eerily similar to each other, and I didn't find any of the raps overly impressive (better than I can do, but still). If this came out in 1990 or 1991, I feel my thoughts towards it would be a bit more positive as it would have been indicative of the transition into innovative gangster rap going on at the time; however, this came out in 1994 which means a lot of artists were already doing this style before its release (Dr. Dre, Snoop Dogg, Method Man's own Wu Tang Clan). If you are a fan of this music overall, I have no doubts that you would enjoy this; however, as someone who doesn't listen to much rap or hip hop, there is not much here for me to comment on. 2/5.

It seems like hip-hop moved on a long way between 1990 & 1994. This sounds a lot more modern then the early 90s albums on this list. I don't know enough about it too understand if Method Man/Wu Tang pioneered this change. This still didn't really can me though.

I just couldn't get into this one. I was expecting more after Ghostface Killah's Fishscale, which I loved, but I didn't walk away super impressed.

It's likely the mood I was in when I listened to this album, but it was not for me. I think I enjoy the more complex production of 90s rap like in that Tupac album I got a while back as opposed to this which felt pretty stripped back. The lyrics were still pretty good though.

Honestly… disappointed. The beats were really rough. And worse than that, the production and mixing is so inconsistent. I feel like I couldn’t even hear the rapping over the drums on one song, then the next song turns the vocals so far up they drown everything out. The ONLY redeeming factor here is that Meth here is actually pretty talented. He’s got a good flow and some solid wordplay, even if I don’t really care for his style.

Well, it's rap and I generally don't like rap. I guess for rap it's really not the worst. I like the dark, brooding atmosphere of the album and Method Man's rapping voice isn't horrible. But that's still a far cry off from enjoying this album.

-I like the reference to "I Will Survive" in "Release Yo' Delf" -I like the flow in "I Get My Thang In Action" -Literally yesterday I said I looked Method Man's flow on "Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)," but I didn't really like the flow on most of this. Kinda whack

Снова пытаюсь переосмыслить подход к объективности. Вот слушаю я альбом. И вроде не бесит. Можно попробовать даже головой в такт кивать. Некоторые решения в аранжировках кажутся даже интересными и оригинальными. Ну вот, и критики говорят, мол нечто знаковое. Значит, следует согласиться? Но выделил ли я хоть один трек для себя? Нет. Оставил бы я станцию в GTA, если сел в машину и услышал это? Нет. Мог бы я хоть кому-то рекомендовать ознакомиться для интереса? Нет. Возникнет хоть раз мысль переслушать? Нет. Думаю, примерно подобным критериям должен для меня соответствовать альбом, чтобы я ставил "3". Так-то многие альбомы вызывают сопоставимый объём положительных и отрицательных эмоций, становясь проходным середняком. И вроде бы середина - это 2,5, а 2,5 округляется скорее до 3, чем до 2. Но 3 - это уже всё же положительная оценка, "зачёт", а "проходняк" для музыки - это нечто отрицательное. Так что тут итоговая оценка "два без негатива".

I think you need an ear for rap music and I just don't possess it. I struggle to latch onto the lyrics which made this album much of a mystery to me. Easy to admire, difficult to love.
