Reviews (page 6 of 13)

Good energy, good fun, a bunch of nostalgia. I liked it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️— 4[.5] stars of 5. Another staple of 90s grunge music. This and Superunknown - which I got a few days ago, are all up there as some of the greats of the 90s. The variation and riffs are definitely there. From that explosive intro “Them Bones,” to the spectacular closer, “Would?,” there’s little time on this album wasted, with memorable riffs and insane vocal performances from the great Layne Staley. Overall, an incredible generational album. Love the hooks on “Them Bones,” the progressions on “Rooster,” and man, “Would?” is just incredible. Perfect closer imo. Favourites: Them Bones, Rooster, Would?⭐️, Dam That River, Down In A Hole, Rain When I Die.

I loved it

I am surprised by this album, I enjoyed it and it is a poster child of the early 90s grunge movement.

Ideally I'd give it somewhere between 3 and 4, but I listened to it twice now and enjoyed it enough both times to give it the benefit of the doubt.

I haven't listened to this album in years. Out of the class of grunge, I think that Alice in Chains wasn't as preferred as Pearl Jam, Screaming Trees, etc., but it is still solid.

Such a good throwback! I used to listen to this album as an angsty teen. Down in a Hole remains one of my faves.

For whatever reason, I am rarely drawn to listening to grunge. But then whenever I do, I'm blown away. I really enjoy it in the moment, but then for whatever reason I don't come back to it for a long time. This album is having that same impact on me as Superunknown did. Gonna give this a 4 so I will remember to come back to it. I love the riffs and song arrangements. This is probably as good a time as any during this project to say I dont listen to lyrics as closely as I should. The lyrics have to really strike a specific way to take the forefront in my listening - otherwise I am always focused on the music/melodies/grooves/rhythms first and foremost. I like the music on this album a lot, and I dont find the lyrics distracting lol. i will probably listen more in the future and have more to say

Looking forward to this one. It’s hard to believe know this is what music sounded like for several years.

Attention-grabbing riffs and lyrics (though they’re kind of nonsense). Decent heavy rock album.

pretty solid. the type of grunge that sounds different to what Nirvana does sounds great. 4/5

"The 43-second 'Iron Gland' was developed out of a guitar riff that Cantrell would play that annoyed the other band members, so he created the song and promised to never play the guitar riff again."

Solid hard rock without a real miss on the album, although not to the level of a 5-star record. Everything is sequenced well, there's good guitar work, and while the songs can get a little drawn out everything still feels well-paced.

If you've ever spent time in a crossfit gym, you've likely heard this album ad nauseum. Them Bones was I swear the theme song of my high school gym. The actual album is well done. Songwriting is pretty great. The sound design and mastering is well done. One of the better early grunge albums, and it did a great job setting the stage for some also great rock albums in the 90s.

Middle school classic for me. I’ve grown to appreciate the lyrics and atmosphere a lot more, though I usually only finding myself coming back to 2-3 songs regularly. As an album, this is a very energetic yet draining experience. The bright and electric surface quickly gives way to a dark core. The range of feelings expressed go from deep depression, addiction, desperation, elation, shame, movement, sorrow, spite, to bitter acceptance. Great structure beginning to end. Wild and psychedelic guitar work with some of the most brutal and human vocal performances of all time. Great gateway into the darker sides of grunge and alt rock.

It was good, but knowing that Eloïse hated it made it great.

Not my style but much appreciated after several albums without many lyrics or depth. Very dark

While some of the off songs aren’t awesome, this album contains 4-5 monster heavy grunge tunes. For that it earns a 4.

The energy I need to start my day

Likes it more than I thought I would

Tough riffs, lots of fun. You can see why they're one of *the* nineties bands.

suprisingly great album, as someone who does not listen metal on a regular basis this was quite enjoyable. Melodically the album made sense and the vocals were really well fit for the songs and themes. The power was excellent and was very fitting for the tackled issues. Overall the album was great to jam out to, but had a level of consciousness that also made it relevant. Favorite track: Dam the river. Overall score: 7.6/10

This is what I call sludge rock. I don’t know what the classification really is but to me, this is it. The guitars are heavy driving, they sound almost muddled but it works. Vocally Layne had a distinct voice and he knew how to use it. His voice just suits the music. Or it’s the other way around, either way, it works. Don’t listen to this if you want to be happy. At the same time, this isn’t an acoustic guitar playing under vocals that scream suicide and despair. It’s just a heavy album. If you value rock/alternative you will value this. Choice cut: Rain When I Die

One of my favorite grunge era albums already! Didn't have to listen again but I did anyways

Enjoyed this one, took me back to my teenage years where I loved listening to this sort of stuff

Classic. Such a good album.

Alice in Chains stworzyli dzieło surowe i szczere, balansujące między grunge’owym ciężarem a duszną introspekcją. "Down in a Hole", jeden z najbardziej przejmujących momentów albumu, to intymne wyznanie o bólu i samotności. Akustyczne aranżacje dodają utworowi melancholijnej głębi, a jednocześnie kontrastują z cięższymi fragmentami płyty. W "Hate to Feel", zespół nurkuje w chaos i autodestrukcję, a Staley eksploruje swoją walkę z uzależnieniem. 4/5

Total pleasant surprise for me! Personally I did not know the band, didn't even ring a bell. Very enjoyable.

I liked this album, a lot.

I’ve had this CD since the 90’s. I know and love so many of these songs. “Them Bones”, “Dam That River”, “Down In A Hole”, “Rooster” “Angry Chair” and “Would?” are all top tier from the era and have aged remarkably well. It’s a pure distillation of grunge. This album is great on its own, but next to the titan records from their contemporaries (Pearl Jam “Ten”, Nirvana “Nevermind”, Soundgarden “Superunknown”, STP “Purple”) it’s not an all time classic to me. That doesn’t really matter though since no other band from their group sounds anything like them.

One of my favourite albums at the time and a band who helped me convert from metal to indie. A very heavy sound and dark songs that reflect the theme of the band. Whilst there are undoubtedly some good songs on this, it doesn’t quite hold the same appeal to me now as other grunge artists from the time. Top track: Would?

Takes me back, still sounds as cheery as ever...

Head banging worthy heavy rock. Lots of cool riffs. Not the biggest fan of the vocal.

So good, that voice

Grunge classic. Bit repetitive and too long

Dark, but enjoyable album.

An album that I'd forgotten how much I loved. The heaviness of both the instruments and the lyrics complement each other, along with Jerry and Layne's instantly recognizable harmonies making for a phenomenal album, front to back. Yea, the subject matter being heavily on drugs and the likes really points to what would be to come, but the emotion really comes out on this one. Is Facelift a better album? Maybe, but in my mind, it's close, with both being very different. We all know Jar of Flies is the true masterpiece.

down in a hole is a vibe ngl sickman reminds me of some nirvana song for some reason though i cant put my finger on it. its probably the vibe but idk. i like it though. its the dark and moody for me with pinches of angelic light just to immediately scream into my ears with the force of a baby demon. again, i like it. (talking about rooster. its about the vietnam war?) lots of enthusiastic YEAHHHHHHs all throughout everything it seems dirt: i believe this album is just great when youre both angry at yourself and everything in general. also sad and angry-sad. or just deeeeep in your feels. "ONE WHO DOESNT CARE IS ONE WHO SHOULDNT BE" excuseeeee meeee???? obsessed. god smack: i like that opening riff. oh and the pressed/shaky/angsty/angry voice? dayum. its a vibe for sure. chills. the voice, the lyrics, the guitar — sobbing on the floor. hate to feel slaps good album. very angry, very 90s.

Returning to my grungy, angsty youth. Brilliant.

this is one of the worst albums yet

Grungeitize me captain

Solid grunge.

I always loved how hard Alice in Chains is meant to come off but they have such solemn sounds. Like Down in a Hole, Rain when I die. These are emotional songs not tough guy songs. I know a ton of it is about struggle and addiction but it's an interesting approach when you consider the rest of the sound and how they're a metal-grunge band. Then you get a song literally called Angry Chair. It's a well done album, could do with some editing, but there's skill and good composition and they're doing what they are aiming to.

Always heard the name in my youth never listened. I like the bass and main guitar riff on Rain when I die. I hear the Blues in the ground work for a lot of this. Like Junkhead is a blues song. There are some solid melodies here. This album could be better with a little trimming.

Really enjoyed the album. Wanted to give it a 3.5, but half stars are not an option. I was already almost 2 decades past my teenage years with its hidden dark angst when these songs started being played on the radio. Even with it arriving at the wrong time, still I loved the feels it gave, expressed with fierce energetic music and harsh, dark lyrics. A real head banger of an album.

excellent

The soundtrack to digging through a bag of pills in a mobile home

A solid album from a band I haven't gone back to in decades. A great rich warm distorted guitar over the harmonic vocals and driving drums. Fairly catchy, almost pop song structure and hooks. No wonder they were able to solidify grunge as radio worthy, laying the groundwork for Nirvana to break out to the mainstream (although this album was after Nirvana began to dominate the charts and I'm sure AiC benefited from Nirvana's glory on this release).

This album rules

It feels wrong to give it a 3. It feels wrong to give it a 5.

I don't really like metal, so the fact that I enjoyed this came at a great surprise to me. It has excellent instrumentation. All of the tracks were interesting, from beginning to end. Highlights: "Dirt", "Rain When I Die", "Hate To Feel".

I’ve got this album. Grunge! It rocks.

Not my usual listen, but I enjoyed.

Really good, I barely knew them but they are really in between Soundgarden, Pearl Jam and Metallica. All great songs, none memorable though. Good study background music I would guess! 4.1

I don't think I've ever been depressed enough, or into drugs enough, to really truly get AIC. That being said, I do like them. Lyrically they're just not super relatable to me. Rooster is such a good song. I used to have a tape that I'd recorded "Would?" off the radio, and every time I hear that song I hear the DJ cutting in over the last few seconds and adding this "Yeah!" at the end of it.

Like ‘em but couldn’t name a single song. Good Dirge like songs.

I was born just a few years too late to really appreciate grunge while it was happening. I remember hearing all of it on the radio and listening to my older brother's albums (Nirvana, Soundgarden, Pearl Jam), but I never really connected with it beyond a couple singles (Spoonman and Black Hole Sun were my jams). I remember being a little afraid of Alice in Chains at the time. They were loud and aggressive and kind of spooky (I have vague memories of what I think was the Unplugged performance — lots of atmospheric candles — so that probably didn't help). I was familiar with their big radio hits, but they all kind of blended together in my head. Case in point — I knew multiple songs on this album (Down in a Hole, Rooster, Would?) but never knew the names of any of them. I never sought out any of their albums at the time of release, and my brother didn't either. But I think if I had been a bit older they would've been right in my wheelhouse. So, this was my first listen to the album, and man is it good. And dark. I feel like it's the spiritual successor to The Cure's Pornography in a lot of ways, mixed with a bit of Black Sabbath (when they do the homage to Ironman on "Untitled" I was like, of course). This album is heavy, bleak, and relentless. There's a lot of pain, but there's also beauty. Lyrically it's well done. I like the introspective, self-aware narratives, but also that there are so many layers of meaning you can extract. Down in a Hole was apparently written by Jerry about his lifestyle choices contributing to the failure of his relationship, but it could just as easily be about Layne's struggle with addiction (and he certainly makes it sound that way when he sings it). Musically, AiC definitely has a signature sound, and it does drag a bit because of the somewhat repetitive soundscape. But some of the best Cure albums are like that too — the atmosphere set up by the music is part of the experience — so I can't knock it too much. The guitar intro on Rain When I Die is sick, and the effects are very Joy Division. I love the tribal, post-punk style drums on Sickman. Angry Chair almost sounds like a grunge version of a Siouxsie and the Banshees song. But the vocals, and particularly the harmonies, are probably the most impressive part of AiC for me. I always preferred the powerhouse vocals of Chris Cornell over the whiny screams of Kurt Cobain or the indecipherable moaning of Eddie Vedder, so it's no surprise that AiC would be a bigger draw for me. Out of the major grunge vocalists — Kurt, Chris, Layne/Jerry, and Eddie — it's crazy to think that only Eddie and Jerry are left. I think AiC probably doesn't get enough acknowledgment for their contributions to grunge and music more generally (I know they're one of the grunge big 4, but people are probably least familiar with them). You can definitely hear the influence of AiC in 2000s music [like Godsmack (obviously), Three Doors Down, Staind, etc]) — for better or worse. Some standouts for me were Rain When I Die, Rooster, and Down in a Hole. 4.5/5 — not quite perfect, but close

Yes! More if this please. Loved every second of it, 90s grunge fucking rocks.

Mistakenly listened to Jar of Flies first, which I really loved. Dirt was also great, but not totally my scene. Can dig a bit of grunge/metal here and there, but a full album is a bit much, I kinda lose my mind. Objectively tho - very influential, talented musicians, lyrically interesting and good flow to the album. 7 / 10 Best track/s: Rooster, God Smack, Rain When I Die

Good ol' fashioned Grunge rock.

That monster Alice In Chains sound, the Layne Stanley voice, the Jerry Cantrell guitar, it's here and in full effect as they are at possibly the peak of their powers. Loaded with songs you half remembered like "Rooster", "Them Bones", "Down In A Hole", and "Would?". This mix would sell millions and was worth every penny.

It is excellent 90's Seattle grunge, but with the clear influence of metal so it is more palatable to transitioning 80's ears. The gloomy, throaty vocals are signature AIC sound and The Rooster is the star of the album.

This rocks

I love the harmonies in Alice in Chains. It sometimes surprises me that this heavy rock band has these really incredible vocal harmonies. Honestly, all the musicality of Alice in Chains is really good. All the members are locked in with each other and understand how to work together to make a complete sound. Personally, this is a little too heavy for my tastes. The music is really good, but it falls just a bit outside my range of heavy rock that I personally enjoy. Favorite Song(s): Rain When I Die, Rooster

Solid grunge album, but as a whole ablum doesn't flow too great.

Now we're talking! AIC's Dirt is a 90/Grunge classic and deserves a spot on the Top 1001 due to influence, impact at the time & the hits that are still relevant radio staples today. I lived in Seattle when this came out, it was absolutely HUGE! Shooting powerfully out of the gates with the rockin' "Them Bones" they set the tone from the get go. They roll right into killer "Dam That River" and "Rain When I Die", both rockers with great hooks. They keep the vibe going with "Down In Hole" & "Rooster", both down tempo tracks but each pack a punch and have a sing-along chorus. The mixing and production is so much better than on previous albums, this is polished for mainstream consumption since everyone was eating up whatever grunge albums were in heavy rotation (5x Platinum). There are a couple tracks that might be considered 'for fans only' with drug-themed "Sickman", "God Smack" & "Junkhead" but they fit the album and the times. "Junkhead" with it's "What's my drug of choice? What have you got?" line is both memorable and foreshadowing. I felt the only dog on the album was "Hate To Feel", it could have hit the cutting room floor and no one would have missed it. The album finishes with the 90's anthem "Would?", who anyone who lived at that time and was into music knows and appreciates. It had its roots in the classic "SINGLES" movie that highlighted Seattle life and grunge music. Deserves a spot in the top 1001, thank you for including it. You can still hear 6 of these songs on rock radio, that's 50%, that's staying power!

Classic

A bit bluesier in retrospect than I expected, but definitely a jam. Surprisingly listenable

could i write poetry to this? n

Alice In Chains was never shy to show their Metal roots. This album successfully unites Alt-Rock, Grunge, and Metal into a fine package.

Do I need to listen to this before I die? No. Is it groundbreaking and monumental? Is it even that iconic? Not really. But that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. There's not a bad song on here, and 'Rooster' takes it to decent quality. Put simply, it's a good listen.

For a genre that usually only has one sound/vibe, I didn't get bored with this album at all. Some gnarly bass on "Rain When I Die."

Dark, heavy, and raw. It crawls through the mud and grinds under your skin. The guitars churn like Soundgarden but with more grit, more pain. There’s a weight to the lyrics that feels personal, like a burden shared. It’s rough, but that’s what gives it power.

Koala tea album

Dirty 90's rock, hell yeah

Really liked the Sap EP and was a bit disappointed when Dirt was released a little later. It is still a solid grunge album though that contains some classic 90s songs, and I can see the reason to include it in the list. vote in 1992: 4 stars vote in 2024: 4 stars

Sovereign grunge-rock-metal, even if slightly ponderous.

Dirty. Love it

4 great album

Great album that I listened to in High School. A lot of the songs got tons of radio play, it was very popular. Definitely brings me back to those days. I was wearing plaid flannel shirts and baggy jeans. Great vocals and harmonies between Lane and Jerry, as well as great guitar work. I'm sure I will listen to this many more times.

Grunge is great because you take the only aspects of hair metal (killer pop chorus’ and righteous guitar solos) and add sludgy, droning guitars and enough solipsism to choke a giraffe. And what does AIC do? They take it to the next level and add a stellar vocalist, I mean this guy has one of the most unique and capable voices since prime Axel, and the amount of baggage he brings to Jerry’s writing really puts these guys in another league of destruction. This album has so much chaos and cataclysm that is absolutely emboldened by some incredible hooks, guitar work, and painfully beautiful singing. The only downside is on the mid-backhalf where it could have used some b-side trimming, but the singles on this album are timeless and strangely mesmerizing. Layne was a gift to the troubled.

Absolutely stunning

A heavy album in multiple senses. Released during the heyday of grunge rock, Seattle's own Alice In Chains second album "Dirt" tells it how it is from the inside out. Heavy drug use, depression & self-loathing, and death are among the themes covered by the late Layne Staley, Cantrell & co. here. Given all of that, Alice In Chains sounds the most cohesive they've ever sounded here thanks to the guitar work and harmonic vocals that are somehow both simultaneously haunting and enchanting. Definitely AIC's best work and a seminal album in the 90's era of grunge/metal. AIC fit into this scene whilst being pretty unique in their sound Favorite tracks: Them Bones, Rooster, Angry Chair, Would?

The hits on here are great. Some of the other songs are good, but not enough to elevate this to a 5. Still good, though. 4/5

Good album. I like their sound generally, but sometimes the lead singer can be a bit droney. 'Rooster' was my fave from this track.

Aww yeah, high school vibes right here. The album isn’t as consistent as people like to remember but the high points are high enough that they lift the valleys. Them Bones is just all time classic metal. Like all good middle aged folk who were teens in the 90s, this band is a favorite.

Really enjoyable.

Alice in Chains, c'était autre chose.

Back to back to back bangers. Also one of the greatest unplugged performances ever. Great album.

Basically one song split across multiple tracks. Classic sludgy guitars. The inspiration this had on grunge is clear. Opener and closer the favourite tracks; Them Bones / Would?

Holds up well!!

Heavy dirty gross

It’s aged better than other 90’s grunge albums. It doesnt resonate with me as much as it did when I was a miserable teenage misanthrope but theres still a handful of genre defining singles: Them Bones, Would?, and Down in a Hole.

I enjoy alice and chains, this album is a classic but i definitely have to be in a grunge mood to play it front to back. More of a winter album than a summer album

Thought this would be a 5 but didn't catch me. Could maybe listen more and score higher.

pretty great! brings back memories and is full of the sounds of my youth.

This was a two listen one for me. I realized after the first listen I wasn't really able to give it the proper attention needed to really make up my mind on it. Finally circled back to my second listen and I really enjoyed it. I do think I have really warmed up to the grunge sound more. I'd be very interested to give some of the lower rated grunge albums a relisten to see if getting an ear for it was the issue or if maybe I just picky about it. I didn't get much into the lyrics for the album but the sound is the thing I was really enjoying. It's dark and murky which seems pretty appropriate for an album called Dirt. I have a feeling this is an album I could get even more into as I listen to it more times. I was going to specifically mention how much I like the guitars on this album but then I realized I just really like the sound of all the instruments as well as the singer. Another great blend. Tempted a little to give this a 5 since I have a feeling it might grow to be one, but if we are talking initial impressions, I'd say a 4.

Very solid. Had me headbanging.

I appreciate everything about this album. I even like some of the songs, but Alice in Chains has never fully won me over in 30+ years of trying. Don’t know why, but art’s subjective so minus a star.

a really great album ! well put together but not really my taste… faves were them bones, sickman and dirt!!!

fuck... well, yes. That's all there is to it, huh? I don't even have to listen to it. It's just been on rotation for the past 20+ years. I used to think it was taboo to listen to something this gritty, this dank, this good. It's not. It's a celebration of a musical supernova event that hasn't been replicated since 1992 (HA! I didn't even have to look up the year. I knew the year. Go me).

79 = 4 stars Nice grunge, can get quite boring but has some nice moments, overall time passed pretty quickly

Hell yeah. HE AIN'T GONNA DIE.

I loved playing Them Bones on Guitar Hero. On easy. By myself. 4.

Here comes the roosteeeeeeerrrr yeeahhh! Alice In Chains has never been a band that’s caught my interest for long periods of time. They’re one of those bands that when I hear them, I like them, but I never find myself coming back on my own. That said, I think Dirt is a really good album. It sounds fantastic throughout, and the song arrangements vary more than expected. The guitar work here is great, and Layne Staley’s vocals are on point. Rooster is the highlight and the band’s best song in my opinion, but it’s a solid record throughout and it’s really only my personal taste giving it 4 stars instead of 5.

Classic 90s rock. These guys are one of the best

Didn’t realize this was this good. Best Song: Angry Chair

strong metal album, driving riffs, inventive solos backed up by strong vocals.

Pretty great

Violent

High quality for grunge category. Influential and their most famous

The cool band your uncool Gen X dad listens to

Early 90’s grunge! What’s not to love. Other than the drug worship lyrics. The sound influenced some of the bands I listen to today. Plus Would? from the Singles soundtrack? C’mon.

good album i liked it it was w chill like an 8/10 idk

Grunge music 101! Fantastic record

4.5/5. A beautiful fusion of grunge and heavy metal, Layne Staley is one of the most tragic figures in rock history.

Brings me back to my moody teenage years. Some of AiC's best songs are on this album. Dark, moody, angsty. At this stage in my life, though, 57 straight minutes of that is a bit much. 4/5!

This is a great 90's grunge album with a 5 songs that will forever be associated with the era. While this album as a hole is not a 5/5, Them Bones, Down In Hole, Rooster, Angry Chair, and Would? are all 5/5 songs.

A very solid effort with homage paid to Black Sabbath and Led Zeppelin. Based on the first three songs I would have rated this album higher, but subsequent tracks were not quite as solid.

Good album, great songwriting on show here. I love the use of strange time signatures (especially in the opening song). The vocals sound really good. Never listened to this band before, but I had heard of them and understand how influential they were to many. I could tell by the vocals that many bands have tried to copy their style over the years. Felt it dragged on a bit towards the end, but still a fine album. One I enjoyed a lot more than I thought I would. FAVORITE SONGS - Rooster - Down A Hole - Hate To Feel - Them Bones 3.5/5

Really good record

Awesome tunes

Good but noisy

Dark, heavy and grooving… Did not expect to like this album as much as I did!

I thought I was going to enjoy this more. The big hits, being Angry Chair, Rooster, Them Bones and Down a Hole are great. But I do find this album can be a tad bit repetitive in my opinion. Would give it a 3.5, but because it’s Alice In Chains I’ll bump to a four.

Nice. As my first grunge album on my 1001 album journey, not unhappy that this was the one that popped up. Several "classic" songs of the era, and blasting the album is enough to get one back into the '90s angst mode! I busted out my flannel shirt, and slammed a couple of cold ones back...

Good music, but a bit long and the vocal style takes it down a star.

Them Bones: Not my kind of music, but I can’t fault it. Rain When I Die: I can hear the connections between rock and metal. I see how this album fits together with the rock albums we’ve listened to. Down in a Hole: I like the chill, soft start to this one. It has a ballad-y vibe. I think I like this track best from the album so far. It’s got some catchy refrains. Sickman: It’s well-made, but I’m just really not a metal guy. The break is cool. I continue to think more songs today should have more fun with breaks. Rooster: Oh, I LIKE this one. The slow, smooth start makes the drop so much more satisfying. I wouldn’t mind hearing this one again. Junkhead: …I’m not sure how I feel about this one :P It feels like a great anthem for getting lost in a drugs hole XD Dirt: I like that the title track is in the middle of the album. It feels like a statement. I vibe with this one, big abuse survivor vibes. God Smack: interesting lyrics, not my fave. Hate to Feel: I’m starting to see a storyline emerging in this album. I like that! I also like that it doesn’t shy away from difficult topics - in this one I see the cycle of abuse. Angry Chair: Lordt, this song is long. I like the refrain though. But yeah, I think it could’ve been tightened up. Would?: A solidly good song. I think it makes a good end to the album. Overall, this album still isn’t my bag, but I respect it. It has a good flow through the album and is well-made and performed. I like that it tackles hard-hitting topics.

I like it

Familiar, good for slightly angry moods. I've heard almost all of these songs before but it's still a good listen.

This album perfectly captures the tense and suffocating vibe that matches the band’s experiences. The music, with its odd time signatures, heavy reverb guitar, and layered vocals, creates a relentless and intense atmosphere. Stand out song is obviously Rooster but don’t sleep on Would and Angry Chair

Formative and dark

One of the biggest band's and albums of the grunge era. AIC were heavier than Nirvana, Pearl Jam and others from that time. There are some real bangers on this album :- Them Bones, Dam The River, Down In A Hole, Angry Chair, Rooster & Would are so classics and make this album a grunge essential but there the rest of the album varies and can become a bit depressing with the sludgy music and lyrics about drugs.

Has some decent songs on it.

Love this album

I hate to not give this album a five, because their sound on this record is something that I don't think anyone has been able to replicate yet: slow, heavy, horror-esque, incredible vocals and harmony (yes, vocal harmony in heavy metal!) And, let's be fair: Down in a Hole, Rooster, Would? all sound as incredible and fresh today as they did 33 years ago (when I wrote this). Many of the other tracks just aren't as refined and become a little more forgettable. 3.75

I'm a Seattle-area native and this album came out right when I was entering middle school, so it definitely had an impact on my musical taste. I'll always have a soft spot for it. That said, other than Rooster and Would, I don't usually seek this out. Jar of Flies was their best work - I can listen to that one on repeat.

I see where Godsmack got their name from. Not my favorite but the guitars kick ass and I can definitely see how they influenced the bands of the early 2000s. 4.25

This has to be one of their best albums. every song on this album is so good.

Alice in Chains > Nirvarna

Seems pretty iconic.

Just incredible

A very strong 4 for me, the production is great, musically it's excellent. I just wish it didn't start and end with the two best songs on the record, it unintentionally overshadows the rest of the album.

Sometimes I think, “I’m too mature now for loud guitar songs about decay n’ spiders n’ shit”, and then I listen to an album like this and I’m like, “hell yeah, decay n’ spiders n’ shit” 🤘

I loved an Alice In Chains growing up, which is a surprise. But his gravelly voice does have a cross over nature that doesn’t put the band in a category of music I dislike listening to.

Soo cool!

nice 90s grunge

I need to be in the right mood for it, but when I am, it kicks major ass. 4/5

Pretty dank

A murky, painful blend of grunge and metal. If the music doesn't make you uncomfortable, the lyrics surely will. Unfortunately, there's nothing that unique about a tortured vocalist, addicted to heroin and soon to die far too young. But Layne Staley's voice, married with Jerry Cantrell's guitars, has a way of dragging you down to the pit of your stomach. Love it or hate it, but it's not to feel anything here.

Feels like everything about it should be a 5 for me, but something is a little off. Feels like there's too much Pearl Jam sound in this for me. Still really like it. Will I listen to again: 90%

Nice album, played it while watching the eclipse

Excellent

classic 90s album. He's got an all time voice

Very good, but feels a bit repetitive in the second half

Straight to library. Great music

i love alice in chains they never disappoint they make me wanna learn how to ride a motorcycle in nevada like please

Big name that I’ve heard of. Thought I might like it, and I did. Though, the album didn’t click for me until Down In A Hole. At times the album seems a bit middling, but the great stuff is where it’s at. Whole album feels “Dirt”-y. There’s a layer of that sound over every song, which gives a lot of character to the project. Standouts: Down In A Hole, Rooster, Hate To Feel, Angry Chair, and Would?

Solid album, not my preferred genre/style of rock.

Good stuff

Very grungy and slimy. I like it. Best Song: Rooster Worst Song: Untitled Album Score: 8/10

LOVE IT. Stale at the end but great great album.

Dark sludgey 90s goodness

Rating: 8.5/10 Great album overall. So heavy and emotionally dark, the instrumentation complements the depressing lyrics so well. There are so many memorable riffs here, very influenced by metal and grunge which makes for many headbanging riffs. Layne Staley pours his emotions out in every song, there were so many great vocal melodies and harmonies. Sometimes the mixture of the guitar and vocals did not work very well but this album is great/excellent the vast majority of the time. Favorite songs: Them Bones, Dam That River, Rain When I Die, Down In A Hole, Rooster, Junkhead, Dirt, Angry Chair, Would?. Worst songs: Untitled, Sickman.

Very rockin! A couple songs weren't great, but I really liked the songs that were. Favorite: Them Bones

Dad! Rock! The guitars rip, obviously. Feels like I'm playing guitar hero. Love the vocals but not always the lyrics. Lots of layers. Not as many standouts but overall a really solid album. Top songs: Dam that river Rain when I die** Rooster Would?

Admittedly not my cup of tea genre-wise, but anyone listening to this album has to concur that the guitar absolutely rips the whole time. Some tracks are deliciously haunting while others refuse to take their foot off the gas, and I liked it a lot. An unexpected big like for me on this one. Faves; Them Bones Rain When I Die Rooster

I mostly like the big hits, of which there are a bunch. The album tracks are just OK. But still, the big hits are just so good.

Wonderful Grunge album

So dirty and hard. Favorite Tracks: Rooster & Rain When I Die

This is one of those albums that transport me back to when it was around, in this case the early 90s. What a strange time for me. Anyway, this isn't about me, it's about the album. Still worthy. 4 stars. :)

One of my favorite albums, “Them Bones” is like a buzzsaw with the driving guitars. I absolutely love it.

I never really got into Alice In Chains, and I'm not sure why. Really enjoyed this one.

A number of songs that have transitioned to the classic rock stations. Back in the day never really being a “fan” of this band but knew their music. I really enjoyed listening to this full album.

Some really great riffs, title track hits hard. Very hard rocky sound, but they are actually trying to do something interesting with it

I split from heavy rock like this before ALICE IN CHAINS hit, so I never really subscribed, even though I always liked Them Bones. After actually listening I was kind of blown away. I still don't like the heavy guitar sound, but Cantrell harmonizing with Staley is next level--they sound perfect. I thought it was a studio effect (it kind of is), but watched some live stuff. Still not going to go all AIC army, but VERY solid album. Would be 3.5, but I'm bumping.

I've never listened to Alice in chains before but now I think I have been missing out? This hits exactly that juncture between memories and going HARD. There were two songs that I recognized from growing up and listening to the radio in the late 90s: Rooster and Would? I wasn't expecting to end the album with such a banger, but there it was!

If there were half stars this would get a 4.5. It's THE Alice in Chains album and solid throughout save for some odd vocal stylings on God Smack. This was a staple growing up and it still holds a nostalgic place in my life, but it's not quite 5 stars for me.

More fun than I expected!

Such an unfortunate loss. Layne truly embodied the persona of the tortured artist. Layne and Jerry had an incredible easy chemistry together and made some of the best music of the 90s. Still a great album 30 years later.

Seminal Seattle grungy-metal sound. Strong finish with Would?, one of the best rock songs of the early 90s IMO

Great debut album-nearly at the height of their powers already.

Dark, hard, and depressing. I didn't expect to like it as much as I did.

Another one I came to later despite it being right up my alley on release, trouble is there was a lot of music to absorb in those days if you liked rock / grunge / alternative and then the wave of UK electronic music that wasn't just doof-doof-doof. Of course I liked all the singles at the time due to continual rotation on MTV Europe, but the album is actually very solid. I preferred the less shouty 'Jar of Flies' album back then and still do, but really this is jam-packed with banging riffs and ripping solos, great vocals and harmonies. It moves pace nicely opening with the hard charging 'Them bones' and 'Dam that river' before later giving way to the meditative 'Rooster' and self-hatred anthems of 'Dirt' and 'Down in a hole' before ending with the stone-cold-classic 'Would?' The lyrics are troubling and explicit about drug use and psychological pain, which clearly transpired to be honest at least. There are some misses like 'Stickman' and a few others at the tail of the album that could have been happily omitted to no ill effect. All in all a well played serious but accessible staple of that era of MTV botty-kicking rawk, with a sleazy and soulful but druggy edge.

I see the appeal, and it’s really well done, but it’s not what I’d pick to listen to

Pile of bones- nice and edgy Damn that river-“you piss upon my candle” Rain When I Die-edgy and nice Down in a Hole- I zoned out Sickman-I’m starting to get sick of this music, man Rooster- hell yeah I would watch the Super Bowl while downing Budweisers to this song Junkhead-yeah Dirt-yeah God Smack-yeah Untitled-yeah Angry Chair-A good song for people who don’t like this genre Would I-An excellent song to round off the album My Top 3: 1-Would I 2-Rain When I Die 3-Rooster

Alice in chains are an amazing band, the sounds of this album are impeccable, great melancholy and grungy sound, however I like jar of flies more

Yeah it was pretty good although not quite to my taste. I'll give it like a low 4/5

Classic. I listened to this one start-to-finish for the first pretty recently, so it's fresh.

Good album. Definitely one of the great grunge albums. That said, I didn't add it to my library because I grew out of grunge rock after high school. Nothing against it, there is some great craftsmanship in this album. From the razor-sharp guitar work and the super tight rhythm section, and the vocals that sit surprisingly well in a very full mix. Worth a spin.

Alice in chain, this fits right up my alley, but never really listened to them, so I was very exited about this one. It took some time, but after the first time listening it got so much better. His voice is so powerful. The album goes up and down, but overall it’s solid. Favourite songs: - Them bones - Rooster - Would?

Really enjoyed this. Fun album from a band I had heard about but never listened to. Will check out some of their other stuff

altisimo rok'n roll metalpaco flow, ta be ta be, no habia sentit mai pero me sonaba, mol be mucha guitarra pum chaka pum modo diablo

"Them Bones", Down in a hole", "Dirt", "Rooster und "Would?" sind wertvolle Anhörtipps.

I was never a huge fan of Alice In Chains as a teen. I much preferred Bush and Nirvana. This album is ok. A lot of it sounds the same and the depressive lyrics get a little much. There are some great songs here though and nothing I strongly disliked. Overall not bad, not great. Favorite song - Them Bones and Would. Added both to my playlist Solid 4 for me

A few strong tracks but the remainder didn't click for me.

Pissefed!

A little heavier than I like, but every song was worth the listen

Easily my favorite Alice In Chains record.

One of those bands where I'd always nod sagely whenever they were mentioned, because obviously, I should know them, without ever really listening to them. HEAVY going, but totally worth it.

I’d love to be able to say that I was cool enough to be down with grunge in 1992, but the truth is I was gettin’ down to Young MC and Public Enemy. It was only some years later that I came around to appreciate some of this stuff. I know the big songs (Rooster is still the shee-it), but first time I’ve ever listened to the whole album. It’s pretty f&@ing good! Between the vocal style and the crunchy riffs it somehow reminded me of an updated version of Black Sabbath. They may classify this one as grunge, but it’s every bit guitar-hero as anything AC/DC or GnR ever put out. What’s my drug of choice?….well whippets of course, but 2/3 of the way through this album you almost believe it was a great life being a cranked out, flannel wearing grunge god…

One of the first cassettes I can recall buying with my own money in middle school. Had no clue what the lyrics were about, I just thought it sounded cool. Not an album that is unskippable, but lots of songs that were really good. Them Bones still gets volume all the way up every time it comes on. The unplugged album maybe even better?

Call it hard rock, heavy metal, grunge or whatever the eff you want…All I know is that when this comes on, my head starts banging like my dudes Beavis and Butthead! Love Jerry Cantrell’s guitar (tune that shit down a half step and get dirty) and it’s crazy how good of a vocalist Layne Staley was (I know it’s not on this album but Man in the Box live is insane). Great album right out of the gate with first 4 songs and anchored by some solid hits (although very much overplayed on the radio…esp rooster). Didn’t love God Smack but enjoyed the rest. RIP Layne!

I’m torn between a 3 or 4 for this album. It has many certified bangers, but I found my self struggling through some of the other tracks. Not sure if that’s a knock on those tracks or a testament to the quality of the songs we know and love. It feels like a stretch to call this a 4 against the pantheon of amazing albums, but against those we’ve heard thus far and giving a bump for nostalgia factor… I’m going 4* but more of a 3.75/4

Alice In Chains has never been my favorite in the grunge scene but I was actually pretty impressed with this album. I get bored of it as a genre pretty quick but this was really great. I have a feeling 4 stars is the ceiling for a grunge album without Chris Cornell.

A bit samey at times but still a decent grunge album. Stand outs - rooster - them bones - would - angry chair

Finally, an album that's actually kind of my vibe. Probably not going in the regular album rotation - I don't know that I found any song to be a standout - but overall a good proto-grunge post-metal time.

I'm not in a mood to fully enjoy this genre of music, but I can appreciate it nonetheless. The lush sound is enjoyable. The dissidence is just about right for grunge. I look forward to enjoying this album/band when I'm in the right mood.

Znakomite otwarcie płyty, mało miejsca na oddech w trakcie piosenek. Bardzo przybijająca muzyka. Niektóre kawałki dobre, niektóre wybitne. 4/5

Fun listen, good guitar and drums

Good stuff. PreNirvana grunge from the old days.

Best guitar playing in grunge? Pearl Jam's "Alive." Second best guitar playing in grunge? Alice in Chains' "Them Bones." I've listened to a fair amount of Alice in Chains' music, but this is my first time listening to one of their albums from start to finish. Honestly, I find Alice in Chains' music incredibly unpleasant to listen to, so I had to mentally prepare myself for the hour long run time of this album. And sure enough, this was a tough album to get through, but not because it was a bad album. Alice in Chains' brand of grunge is somehow grungier than regular grunge. Their overall sound is incredibly dark, but it definitely matches the tone of their lyrics. About half the songs on this album are about heroin addiction, which is depressing enough, but knowing that Layne Staley would die eventually die from that addiction makes it even more difficult to get through those songs. And if that wasn't enough, there's the Vietnam War POW story of "Rooster," which might actually be the most brutal and depressing song of the whole album. Even though the songs are depressing, they're incredibly well written; the lyrics create such a vivid imagery, that as the listener, I really found myself being pulled down with the band. Musically, this album is fantastic as well. Even though the grunge scene was packed to the gills when this album came out, it's incredibly easy to recognize an Alice in Chains song, even if you take away Layne Staley's haunting voice. Jerry Cantrell's guitar playing is unmistakable, and the guitar parts he wrote for this album were unique, but gave the album a cohesive feel. My biggest complaint with this album is that it overstays its welcome pretty often. The overall album run time is long and drags on, and the individual songs can drag on as well. "Them Bones" is my favorite Alice in Chains song, and it's no coincidence that it's also one of their shortest. This album is still really good though, and any music fan should give it a listen.

The most Black Sabbath sounding of the grunge cohort, this album is all about the top of the line sludgy sludgy riffs coupled with some great guitar lead lines that reinforce the main idea before going off course into some wah-wah territory. The chorus-effect on the dirty leads sounds really cool, bringing some bright tone tone the dark moody pallette. The vocals are the star though, soaring and diving they cut through the thick heavy mire of the slow grooves, belting out some massive anthemic lines. How he makes YEAH HERE COME THE ROOTSER sound so badass is hard to explain. They shouldn't held responsible for the Butt Rock that came after them, but you can see the template here - slow distorted and heavy with a hint of groove and a pissed-off sad guy wailing over top of it. They're so good at it you can see why it spawned so many pale imitators.

Dirt is great. Many songs don't hit me as hard as they do for other people, but the ones that grab me are flawless. Grade: 4/5

Good songs I remember from an ATV game I used to play as a kid.

Drullugóð plata. Alveg hægt að headbanga yfir henni.

Good grunge album

I liked them when they were on the radio, but never had their CDs. I thought the album was pretty good, a few of the songs got stuck in my head. Overall, good album, but not something I'll listen to often.

Oh hell yeah! Some hard rock that makes me rock hard. Getting added to my gym playlist. Unfortunately some songs could be done without so maybe just a couple songs from this album are worthwhile. Still enjoyed most of it. 7/10

Arguably the hard rock kings. Bordering between hard rock, traditional metal and grunge they are ones of those instantly recognizable groups. This and Nirvana were on heavy rotation in my teens and similarly to Nirvana I don’t really listen to this kind of music anymore. Even though my musical tastes changed they are still an iconic group that sounds just as good as when I listened to them almost twenty years ago. 8/10

Best song “Would?” 4/5

a classic! Oft sehr prominent.

First three tracks in weird time signatures while still sounding accessible - no mean feat, both to achieve musically and also to get that past record company executives! Five singles from this album. Bones - Maybe the only 7/8 song that charted in the 90s? Great, heavy without being too weird. Dam that River - 12/8 (or three lots of 4) love it! Rain when I die - 3/4 - It's so hard to do anything but waltz in 3. Like bones, back into 4 for the chorus. Weird - normal, rhythmic tension and release. Down in a hole. 4th track is a ballad - gutsy move for a heavy band at this time. Sickman - At least three different time signatures in this one, discordant vocal line in verse and bridge. Tempted to say it's accidental, but in the 2nd half of the song he shows he can sing in chromatic harmonies, so have to assume it's a very cool artistic choice. Lyrics tend towards self-loathing, which I think is a new, defining feature of grunge - the lyrics are based more on empathy, personal truth and sadness rather than the hedonism, anger and recklessness of rock lyrics in the 80s. Throw misogyny in there too (80s wise). Rooster - beautiful, powerful song. Guitar player's Dad was a Vietnam vet with spiky hair - hence Rooster was his nickname. He and his family left his Dad, Rooster to live with a Gran because of his PTSD issues. The song is an attempt to empathise with his Dad. I love the ambiguity caused by the pronoun omission in the first line "Ain't found a way to kill me yet" (They / I?). This guy is a battle survivor - internal and external. Dirt - Title track. Phrygian dominant scale (Egyptian sounding). Another good slowish one demonstrating that heavy doesn't have to be fast. God Smack. Very weird vocal line on the verse - same four times, so again, have to conclude he's being intentionally very oddly discordant. I have no idea what I'd sing over such an odd riff. Iron Gland. (Iron Man parody/tribute) Hate to Feel (Almost a Dazed & Confused tribute). More time signature malarkey - bridge is a bar of 7/8 followed by a bar of 9/8. Interesting, more weird vocals. Angry Chair. A single, but never really stood out to me. Would? Definitely a classic grunge track - verse quiet, chorus loud. A song about Andy Wood (singer who died of a heroin overdose) whose band mates formed Pearl Jam. Prominent bass. A great, classic album forming part of the heart of the 90's Seattle sound. This is very much my kind of thing.

Some great songs and some filler. 4/5

I like the singer voice and dark melodies of guitars and drums

Geggjað seattle grunge

lowkey they slayed

4/5. A heavy grunge/metal album chock full of bangers. I didn't realize this is where my favorite metal bands clearly got their influence from. This honestly just rocks so hard and each song has an amazing accessibility despite the lyrical content and music atmosphere. Love this genre, and love to find new albums within it.

Grew up in the grunge era but didn't get into Alice in Chains, probably should have, its pretty good.

I’ve listened to this album extensively

Liked this, very similar throughout but I think it’s that’s a good thing. Favourite songs ‘Rooster’, ‘Dirt’ and ‘Hate to Feel’

Just good album

Heavier than I like but it has some really great musical moments and vocals. Some songs really turned down the aggressiveness. Behind the grit and dirt is great writing and musicality. Double bass is gritty and the guitar solos are epic. Overall this was a pretty solid album. Fun to listen to.

Once again brings me back to high school, and San Andreas GTA.

Of the grunge big four these guys are easily the darkest and angriest. This album is very good but unfortunately Jar of Flies overshadows their entire discography for me and I wish *all* their albums sounded like that one. Still this is solid. Probably my least favourite act of the 4 though.

This thing rocks. I was not ready to like this as much as I did.

Favorite songs: Down in a Hole; Rooster; Would? This album rocks. Guitar riffs abound. Rooster is the best of AIC. Very good album.

AJ: excellent

I liked it, it was fun :) probably less iconic than most of the other ones so far but I liked it more

Jerry for the love of god I can't understand what you're saying but it does make me feel pretty cool. Yeah I'm a rooster don't mess with me 🐔🐔 ANGRY CHAIRRRRR

Didn’t think I’d like it but it’s pretty good

While grunge isn’t my favourite genre, I still think this album is really great due to its hard-hitting riffs and introspective lyrics Favourite tracks: Them Bones, Dam That River, Down In a Hole, Sickman, Rooster, Angry Chair, Would

THEM BONES

i was prepared not to enjoy this but i am favorably impressed

Low 4 but I enjoyed this one! Didn’t realize that Alice In Chains was a Seattle grunge band?? Always thought of them as late 80s arena rock for some reason. I hope things got better for their lyricist because this is not a happy man. Running late to work bye

Cover me in all this dirt, great production, songs are movin and groovin.

Has the best opening note of any album.

One of my favorite early 90's rock albums. Staley's lyrics and singing are powerful, Cantrell's lines are absolute bangers. Not always in the mood for the entire album as a whole, but the first half is fantastic. 4/5!

Great, not really my style, but still really good nevertheless

Great sound, I heard Would? before, but the whole album is great.

A heavy hitting, dark album from the underground kings of grunge.

Actually quite enjoyable

Heroin, the musical!

Rooster!

i know this is going to be a contentious album for entourage. but i'm sorry. this absolutely whips. i hated myself after listening to this chef's kiss

Good stuff grunge

Classic. Not a perfect 5 but I enjoy this album and would give it 4.5

An album with down in a hole, rooster, Angry Chair and Would? Deserves a high rating regardless however is a long album and a couple songs that didn’t have to be there. 8.7

I already liked Alice In Chains so it was nice

Good album love the guitar voice/tone/whatever. Rooster such a banger my stepmom said that would be her walk up song for baseball if she was a pro player.

I like the album that came after this better, but this is the one with a lot of their famous songs.

Hell yeah give me the grunge. I love how all 90s grunge bands sing in the exact same voice. The harmonized vocals are pretty cool. I like how sludgy the album feels, idk if that's the right word but it feels very thick ya know? Like you have to wade through the sound it doesn't just wash over you. Am I cooking or does this not make any sense?

Really good, just not my favorite.

Dirty grungy sound with bleak ish lyrics

I thought this was a pretty good album will have to explore more Alice in Chains

I've never really listened to Alice in Chains, but I dig this album. Will definitely have to listen to more. 4.5/5

Amazing album..not as perfect as jar of flies but great nonetheless. Junkhead is one of my favorite AIC deep cuts

whats ma drug of choy, yoice?

The junkie album, this album could as well being call heroin. But more than drugs, its the pain and the torture with dark subject and lyrics that really define this album. Depression and death are very sensitive subject that they are not ashamed of talking off, Jerry Cantrell the lead guitarist is credited for allmost all track and he clearly was a big influence on this reccord, he co-sing on 3 songs. I think Rooster is the best track here, an dark but destructive guiatr riff intro and the chorus "they come to snuff the Rooster", bring a more political and social tone that this album needed. It talk about Jerry's father that was a veteran of the Vietnam war and was nicknam "Rooster" but could be associate to the Gulf war in 1991. Anyway a incredible song with a good story is a pefect song. Other song that i liked are: Junkhead, Godsmack and Would? I generaly liked song about drugs, and three song reference explicitly heroin use with a very open, but not in a candid way, a very dark, trouble and honnest way. Those are Godsmack, sickman and Junkhead. I always though Layne Staley voice look like Kurt cocain, but when we listen closely we see differences and Layne have his own style that we could spot easly. I'm gonna say that this is the ultimate grunge album, i love nevermind, Nirvana and all, but i think the grunge spirit is more honnest and brutal here, the musicality is very good too and althought not very catchy, it is very powerfull and perfetcly fit the vibe of this album. I think this album recived all the credits it deserved, in the peak of grunge and alternative music this reccord push it a another level like Black Sabbath or the Stooges in their respective genra, Heavy Metal and Punk rock were big influences on this band, and you see The 70's punk in the attitude, subject and the hard rock/heavy metal in the music. It sold more than 5 millions of albums in the US alone, so its not just a undeground random reccord, its a phenomenon part of a bigger mouvement and i think its well deserved for them. On the bad side, (not so much to say on paper) i was not attarcted by those tracks, expect the Rooster wich is one of my favorite grunge song, i dont feel the same for a lot of thoses song, That why i would not give him the perfect notation, but i really praise everything, i just don't connect with it at the same level as some of my favorite bands, but its on the music side, not the vibe, the deepnest or the lyrics that i respect a lot.

first listen such a real and raw sound
