I don't really have anything good or bad to say about this.

Isn’t my jam at all, but not bad music.

wasn’t bad, maybe I’ll listen again. I liked the sounds but I don’t have much to say

Uppa's jammmm

Disclaimer - mostly on country, I am more I Solent and heretic that irreverent. You see country is a style that I have never taken fully seriously for it's bizarre plaintive and repetition, not least the wonky noises it makes. (Think of the use of Blue Bayou in Mars Attacks film, as a weapon that killed Martians ... that will out you on my wavelength , dear reader, as there can only be one of you, too!) This album, well the band name is a clue, - A curiosity and highly entertaining as a pisstake of country and folk and whatever the cool style of the moment was. (I mean, does style and gentle matter...? . )The lyrics are meant to be funny right. Right??! It's like the send up/hamming up - beautifully done - in the fillum O'Brother Where Art Though? It's gelled so stiff it's caricature. And thus funny. And "Sin City" could be what " A man if constant sorry " was based on.... Performed with a stupor and straight face, it would make me grin ear to ear. I can rarely handle country except ironically, and this helped me chill and smile wryly while sipping from my jar and thumbing the hole in my overalls. Surely "Juanito" is both parody or horror of true childish male debasement of women. Does it belong here? Not sure. To tick a box? Did I like it? It's ok.mnif it gives you the giggles but then gets painfully plaintive Sometimes it serves to entertain (like the upbeat, My Uncle). Actually better is the soundtrack to OH BROTHER WHERE ART THOUGH ? ... Final rating. I barely care to rate it... It induces such deep hopelessness and apathy, as perhaps it should.

Way more county than rock. Its okay.

I love when someone does something refreshing with country music, even if it was already over 50 years ago. Wondering why so many have returned to the basic old style if this is where it could've headed

Nokkuð ljúft og snoturt sveitarokk. Gæti hlustað aftur, en þarf þess ekki.

A very fun listen that I just didn't expect..

Enjoyed a few tracks and the style

Not as out there as the title had me prepared for. Rocky country with a twist. The reviews were pretty funny in parts..

So this is an odd one. It's a pretty run of the mill country album for the first two thirds, too biblical and twee for my tastes, but then livens up a lot with two tracks entitled Hot Burrito #1 and #2. That's a lot more like psychedelia, which I much prefer. Quick return to twee country with Track 10, before a proper proggy closer which I also really liked. Just manages a 3, on the strength of the three good tracks, but wouldn't recommend as a full album.

It's a perfectly nice country rock album that did nothing more than exist for most of its runtime. The closing track, Hippy Boy was a bit different and good. But mostly it was just okay.

bien qsy 7/10

Nothing that unique, but also nothing musically assaulting. It was a perfectly fine listen.

I really hate slide steel. I know that's subjective and I shouldn't judge an album on how much slide steel is on it. But I'm gonna. It's awful. -1 star for the slide steel alone. The rest of the album was alright, I guess. It's country but not like... authentic country. It feels very poser. Very LA. This is sequins and convertibles instead of denim and horses. As such, it never really seems to hit anything but a superficial, surface-level emotional note. The musicianship is clearly up to snuff and Parsons is generally a pretty good songwriter but, despite all that talent, it's just a really 'meh' album.

This album sounds legit - a full-on tribute to country music from guys who were playing more fashionable music a year or two prior. I like the harmonies and the guitar, especially the slide.

Way better than Sweetheart of the Rodeo, which sucked, but still just okay

The flying burrito brothers are a band that gives off supernatural Hispanic vibes. Yet the music is a softer rock with country twang and instrumentals. This album is decent. It has a good genre blend while still sounding nice. The songs aren’t the most impressive but it has a niche that is worth filling sometimes a la burrito style. 6.4/10

3.5 + It's hard to take this band seriously with such a stupid fucking name. Overlooking that, this record is a solid blend of country, gospel and psychedelic-inflected rock. I like the use of slide and lap steel guitar throughout. The songs float in a pleasant middle ground but I don't connect on a deeper level.

Man, this one really started with a bang and ended with a whimper. I love these vocal harmonies and the fusion of rock, country, folk, and blues was exciting to hear. The original songs and covers all brimmed with something fresh and exciting. At least for the first 5 songs... After that the quality and originally fade and the album as a whole begins to overstay it's welcome. By the time it was over, I was glad it was over. Still some good tunes here, but I won't be listening to the entire LP again.

I wish I had a bit more time to listen seriously today so I could better appreciate all the nuanced uniqueness of this album. The snatches I was able to enjoy were quite interesting. Seemed like there was some good cheeky storytelling paired with real solid hurdy durdy twang. I’m going to circle back to this one when I can listen without distraction.

Плавающая шава запомнится, конечно, но хз. 3-

The album cover is a 10/10, the music not really there though. It was a very classic country feel to it which makes it a cozy, comfy listen, but too few of the songs just don’t have much memorable to them. I like the interjections of fuzzy guitar on a few of the songs too. 6/10

I don't listen to country. I kinda liked this.

Sad sounding country is just not my cup of tea. Decent vocals, I just couldn't muster much enjoyment out of this.

After the run of 2's this list has given me this past week, this low 3 sounds like a goddam masterpiece.

I’m fairly sure that The Flying Burrito Bros have not come up on my radar before. I feel like I’d probably remember a name like that. Happy to hear something new (to me) today. Songs I already knew: none Favourites: Christine’s Tune, Sin City, Hippie Boy This wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. It’s very rare that country music does anything for me, but there were some pretty good songs on here. Don’t get me wrong, there were also some pretty bad songs, but I was expecting to like none of it so I’m happy to be proven wrong. I can’t quite put my finger on why this is different to any other country music either. The vocals are very hit and miss - sometimes they harmonise beautifully, other times they just seem a bit off. Overall, as a whole album, this was decent but nothing more.

The name of the band was the only thing familiar to me before listening to The Flying Burrito Brothers' The Gilded Palace of Sin. In general I liked the album. The music was not country, but had a mix of country, folk, or southern rock. There were times wehn the vocals reminded me of the Flaming Lips, and some of the arrangements reminded me of the Milk Carton Kids. I'm a fan of both of those bands. A full album of songs about "love done wrong" is a bit much for me, so I am not rounding up to 4 stars. I would be interested in hearing more from the band.

Country. Ni fu ni fa.

Bah, normal.

Blended country and psychedelic 60s sounds together pretty well. Not a whole lot of variety, but nothing was outright bad

definitely not my usual genre. the lyrical content is intriguing but not enough to look into further. The band name and album title are lil misleading.

I used to watch Hee-Haw at my grandma's house when I was a kid. To be accurate, she would put it on and what was I gonna do? Trying to be objective I can definitely hear how this was an influence on a lot of 70s music, and not just the same genre. You can hear how artists like The Eagles, Elton John, and the Stones to name a few took a lot from this (also there are shittonne of echoes of "AM Gold" type music in here; e.g. listen to "Hot Burrito #1" - could be Bread). There's a nice simple clarity to the record that makes it easy-listening. Having said that ... I'm not sure I actually *like* this all that much...? just on a personal level; it's fine to listen to but not something I'm going to ever reach for not being much of a country fan (having said that, "Hot Burrito #2" is really good and more along the lines of an early-70s vibe I enjoy). But props to not trying to do too much. And for the 37 minute run-time. Everybody could probably get something out of this for one listen at least. 6/10 3 stars.

Aparte plaat. Ondanks dat het veel country bevatte, intrigeerde me het wel. Niet heel vervelend dus van 2,5 naar 3 sterren

Laurel Canyon Country Bear Jamboree

Had never heard of this, so was happy to have a new discovery after a few days of well-known albums. It was entertaining, but nothing extraordinary. Hard to move past the burrito names, though...

It's decent enough

I love the band name but otherwise it seemed like a typical country album from the early 60s even though it came out later on. It was fun to listen to but nothing stuck too much

Nice harmonies that we can expect from the Byrds members, but this is country pop we have heard many times before.

Entertaining country rock album that on the long haul turns out to be too similar and without real highlights

I like the name more than I like the music, unfortunately. The last song was cool though.

Good time

Definitely expecting more whimsy from such a named band

Country soft rock, not bad not overly exciting, "Christine" was best

Bare hedninger som ikke liker køntri.

Whether you like it or not, country rock is a thing, and these guys were the Pangaea of the genre. (6/10) FT: Christine's Tune, Hot Burrito #1

A sort of early Eagles, but softer.

Not on my radar. Great suits! Before I listen/Wiki, I guess its a country-rock thang? Ah Gram Parsons. Died in his 20s of booze and drugs. Hit it! Ok I see that this album did poorly on initial release but now is held in quite high esteem. Its kinda washes over me. Workmanlike but unmemorable. 3

I don’t know what I was expecting…it’s alright. Not my favorite piece of ‘60s rock. There’s a bit too much country style to this for me to enjoy it fully.

Decent older country. Christine's Tune is excellent

I misread the title as The Gilead Place of Sin. Maybe that flavoured my context as some of it sounded a bit preachy. Do Right Woman rang some bells, Dark End Of The Street was enjoyable but the rest just didn't do much for me.

I'm not a country fan but I quite like this with the heavy instrumentals

Hi- Christine's Tune, My Uncle, Wheels, Hot Burrito #2 so confused...I can't tell if it's preachy gospel or swamp rock satire or goofed-up psychedelic. It's all of it, and none of it all at once, where it's honky-tonk, jazzy, funky and light-hearted while diving into deeply serious topics. It's just a weird combination. The lyrics seem to be either observational or introspective, but cover a wide gamut of topics such as gambling, prejudice, heartbreak and infidelity, religion, military and draft-dodging, and drugs/alcohol. Over all, it's a competent album...and it's definitely food for thought (but never carry more than you can eat).

Liked it more than I thought. Kind of nice quaint 70s psych-folk but has something about it that is appealing. Not my genre in general but not bad at all.

Gram Parsons proper follow-up to the highly influential Sweetheart of the Radio. Huge points for creativity, influence, and strong songwriting. The R&B covers work well too. Major problem is that it sounds garbage. I can hardly hear anything besides the vocalist and guitar... nearly all the instruments sound faint and overshadowed (the piano's ok). The instruments are played well, but it's just the horrendous mixing. The tracks themselves are all solid, there's a stronger diverse country influence here than on Sweetheart, but I don't find them as iconic or endearing. It might have to do with the harsher vocals. Still one of my favorite country albums next to Sweetheart. Favorites: Sin City, My Uncle, Wheels, Hot Burrito #1 and #2

Actually didn’t mind some of the soul covers.

This was a band I just could not get into. I mean I love Ray Price, Roy Acuff, The Louvin Brothers, Buck Owens and I get what the Burrito's are trying to do but that's the problem. What the Burrito's are trying to "Do" to me comes off as incomplete

Nothing particularly special here.

I was supposed to listen to this years ago lol

I was already convinced of the necessity of psych-country, but this album did very little to help. I was already convinced about pedal steel, and that instrument wormed its way in during the second half and recommended the project to me nonetheless. Parson's voice is silky, which lends the unsmoothness of the record a strange quality. Fine pop country is what the Gilded Palace ends up at, I think.

5/10. Evil rappers be like: I'm not the kind of person who would want attention from multiple women. All in all a rather samey album that verges on contemporary christian music.

Proto-Eagles! One of those ones that's on the list because of their influence more than the actual album I assume, as it's like classic country rock in a bottle. My top pick is 'Do Right Woman', a good soul vibe number!

Liked the back half of the album but on the whole didn't really care for it too much.

Not a fan of this southern rock sound but listenable

I first heard this one many years ago when I was first getting into "country rock" along the lines of Lucero, Uncle Tupelo, DBT, etc. I wasn't super impressed then if I'm being honest. I'm still not, but it's not bad. I feel like I should like it more than I do. I can understand why other people would like it and the influence of it is apparent. Not a bad time, but I'm still not entralled.

Not my kind of country album, not a fan of the lyrics

This seems like an album that fits the time/place/era from when it was released. It’s good, but feels dated. It had some catchy hooks and overall the feel of late 60’s era anti war, anti government came through in the music I was hearing. I liked it, but not sure I’d listen again. I’ve actually seen the name of this band a few times, but never gave them a listen. Glad I gave them a chance.

It reminded me a lot of Brazilian Brega music, and I liked how the hillbily meets the hippie in some tracks, like "Wheels", and also gospel music influence in "Hippie Boy". Pretty nice, but I couldn't find the reason why it's in the 1001 list, just by listening to it. UPDATE: I checked its Wiki page out, now I see it better :)

'Country-rock' - 85% country 15% rock. I don't think that it's bad country though. Nothing groundbreaking.. expected some crazy shit from the title and band name!

6.5/10

Didn't really land with me.Just very countrified soft rock

Luke Null, with a guitar solo by Jack White, on SNL sang the best rendition of "The Dark End of the Street", which saves this otherwise somewhat forgettable album.

Fiilaan lämminhenkistä tunnelmaa. Puolet biiseistä hyviä, puolet vähän meh, mutta annetaan nippa nappa 3.

I liked this album, but I do think it was missing something

Enjoyable but not gonna win many awards in my book. Extra 0.5 stars for the name

Bah, normal. Un 3

Much twangier than I expected. Most enjoyed the song Hot Burrito #1. Overall neutral on the album - didn't love it, didn't hate it.

Country

Bit much following on from Grateful Dead

Enjoyed hot burrito #1 (Bb minor)

Een klassieker van een country/rock album

Washed over me like another day at work

Enjoyed the music a lot but not a huge fan of some of the lyrics.

Vibrant melodies that flirt with psychedelia and Gram Person's gorgeous vocals make for some great country-rock songs, though the album lacks consistency at times. The energetic guitar jabs on Christine's Tune, the terrific harmonies on Dark End Of The Street and the lyrics on Hot Burrito stand out the most. 3/5.

Not a huge country fan, but the first half of this album was ok. Second half not so much.

Fine. Not much more to add

Pleasant, think Buffalo Springfield with a surfer vibe.

interesting piece of early classic country/rock

It was enjoyable, it was some old fashioned country rock. Nothing too special (hence why I did not finish the album)

It was listenable but not to my taste. Yesterday was a hIgh ***, this is a low ***

NIce album. I liked listening to it.

3.5/5. Good country rock, pretty average, but good. I've heard of The Flying Burrito Brothers before so it was good to listen to them.

just not reaching me, some special spice is missing, idk

Kinda boring for a band called flying burrito brothers, kinda boring so an album called the gilded palace of sin

Thought there’d be more Taco Bell. Lame

Please stop, I dont like it.

The first of two country albums in a row. Ughh. The fact that they are more like Grateful Dead or Janis Joplin type country only mildly makes it a better experience for me. At least this didn't start off terrible--the first track has a CCR type sound to it. "My Uncle" is a decent track. "Hippie Boy" is ok because not as country. Anyway, this isn't terrible but it also isn't really compelling or necessary. I guess Deadheads would like it. Country for hippies. 2/5

Another one completely new to me. This one I found listenable even if the country rock genre is not top of my list.

I like the harmonizing voices, but didn’t think this was very good. I didn’t think it withstood the test of time very well.

Very meh, twangy, bland folk country. Nothing bad, just absolutely nothing outstanding or even good. Like an amateur band in a bad bar trying to play music. It's surprising that two members of the EByrds started this band, because it is not great. The music is remieniscent of a bad B movie soundtrack where they didn't have enough money to get anyone decent.

Genuinely speechless learning this is country music. THAT band name??? THAT album title???? COUNTRY????

Best Track - "Wheels"

I’d seen talk of some of the influence of this, and the scene and lineage it’s coming from, and thought “oh yeah, this could be really cool”. And then lo and behold, it sounds like a group of LA guys making a bad pastiche of country music, with the occasional drops of the psychedelic rock I assume they’re probably better at doing, and lyrics they think are really fresh and cutting but actually seem like they’re miles behind the outlaw country singers and songwriters on the come up. One upside is it gives me so much more respect for Eagles if this is the country rock base they were working off.

Yo de 5 puntos le doy 3.

Not for me

Oh, we're back to country rock - with a heavy country feel. Not my thing, but it seems pretty smoothly played. And at least it's short!

Bonito mas terrivelmente sem graça. Nome horrível pra uma banda também. Têm alguns momentos que o salvaram do completo tédio mortal, mas são poucos. 2.5

Little bit toooo much of the wrong kinda country for me, this all sort of blended into one 2.5

With that name I was expecting some sort of drugged up, far out, psychedelic rock. So a boring country album of same paced songs felt like more of a disappointment than ever.

This album is a classic but it's not my favorite. The Flying Burrito Brothers are nothing special in my mind and we're a product of their time which helped them succeed.

Baustelle, Gerstetten, Deutschland. Öde.

There are little bits I like but it's too country for me to really get into it Fav tracks: Dark End of the Street, Hot Burrito #2

FAVO:

Not for me

Al pasar nomás. Rescaté un solo tema. Pero bueno, nada negativo para decir.

For such a wacky name they really made super generic country music. 4/10

This was off to a bad start before I listened when I saw comparisons of the group to the Louvin' Brothers, who have tormented me previously. This isn't quite that bad but still 60's country that I didn't enjoy. Just passable.

It was okay. Fun band name.

Meh. Country. Not for me.

Top : Dark End of the Street Flop : Juanita

How to ruin multiple genres at the same time by making them all sound like generic Country garbage. With a name like The Flying Burrito Brothers, I was hoping for something more than what we got with this one, especially with an album name like "The Gilded Palace Of Sin". How do you have an album name that cool and then spend a majority of time just sounding like your average, run of the mill Country drivel?? I really have to say, it's impressive how they can almost make some of the songs work, but still put a Country spin on it to make it still sound bad anyway. The 2 notable exceptions are both Hot Burrito songs, "Hot Burrito #1", and my favorite song on the album, although they pretty much come neck and neck as a pair, "Hot Burrito #2". Those songs have a psychedelic lick to them, and even with the singing, sound good enough to bump this album up from a high 1, to at the bare minimum a 2. I'd love to give it a 3, but 2/11 songs being bearable isn't great. I don't hate the guitar playing in the intro, "Christine's Tune", but it's overshadowed by my intense dislike of the singer. Every song sounds the same besides the aforementioned burrito songs, which is a shame, because "Psychedelic Country" actually sounds like a somewhat interesting combo I'd be down to hear. It's a shame it's only used so sparingly, and now I have to have the sub-genre take an unnecessary hit on my profile by giving this album a 2. Been a while since I had a 5, would be nice. Instead, I'm left with a concept that while unique, falls flat on it's face right from the beginning, and never recovers sans a duo of outliers buried deep into the album, which despite being a great length of 37 minutes, feels like it lasts an hour. It's always a struggle getting through Country albums, but at least this one had the gall to be different in a few places, and when it is different, it actually works. Unfortunately, it's not nearly enough. This is a very comfortable 2 stars out of 5, and I can also comfortably say I won't be returning to The Flying Burrito Brothers. Such a good name, wasted on whatever the hell this was. Whatever, there can only be so many bad Country albums on the list. Better to just get them out of the way as fast as possible to make more room for the good stuff.

I can handle the Byrds, but this is just not for me. Kinda cool that it blends the country and rock/pop genres, but I just have no love for the sound or musicality of it. Feels like a poorly done rip off of both instead of a marriage. 2.

So I am glad that I listened to the right album because I got confused there for a bit. Still didn't think it was all that great lol.

Second album in a row is just mediocre. Don’t really understand how something like this gets on the countdown. It really doesn’t have a whole lot to offer, songs are slow and sleepy, and the lyrics just aren’t that great. Yeah, Gram Parsons is a cool artist but there’s just not much here. Amazingly bland.

too dull and inoffensive to justify a 3

This was... fine? It was pleasant enough county but It don't understand why it's on this list—there's nothing to come back for except the final track.

Meh. I appreciate the contribution to future country and folk bands, but this album didn't work for me. I enjoyed the piano whenever it popped up, but it was otherwise too heavy on western and twang for my tastes. 2.3

Why is this ok this list? If I want to listen to good Country Rock I will always choose CCR.

Inoffensive is about the best thing I can say about this album.

A tough listen, not an enjoyable listen.

Oh I tried, but once again I find that country music and me don’t get on. Last couple of tracks were semi-bearable, but most of it was Room 101 stuff

I expected something so much better from a band called The Flying Burrito Brothers. I wasn’t hoping to hear a sappy country record. There was some good guitar work here and there but for the most part this was really flat and unmemorable. Wouldn’t listen again 2/5

Did not know Gram Parsons was part of this one, but didn't really like this

Did not finish it to be honest. Too slow too old too much country & dobro

I'm soooooooooooooooo fucking bored

The Band name promised me something fun. I got meaningless 60s western cosplay. I'm going to go listen to the Viagra Boys to make up for this slight.

Не чув про таких) Кантрі, бляха-муха)

What a band name. Country-ish album, not very interesting or worthy of this list.

I would die for the flying burrito brothers

What an incredible band name. What a letdown of an album. Aside from the Hot Burrito tracks, everything sounds very generic country. What a letdown.

I’ve always been turned off by their name. Sounds less unpleasant (and a little more country) than I thought it would, but I didn’t miss much. So far my track record of judging bands by their names has worked out pretty well for me. Why stop now?

Ok. I get it but

cap n jazz?

157/1001 First listen. Sounds like a whole lotta country to me. Next. 4/10

Most disappointing genre record by a band with a misleadingly fun name since The Zombies

If you've ever wondered "What if John Denver thought he was Conway Twitty," wonder no more.

This country album sparked some interest right at the parts where is was distracted from its main style at most. "Hot Burrito #1" and "Hippie Boy" are the highlights that use some blues inspirations, and the latter also has the chatter-instead-of-singing thing. The most of the album is quite dull and did not appear any special, though.

Ganske kjedelig. Hørt denne stilen bli gjort bedre før.

Var jo heilt OK minus, men forandrar ikkje livet mitt på noko vis. Går vidare på lista.

Ikke helt min sjanger, oppleves derfor ganske generisk og likt som andre ting.

I expected this album to have more character with such a unique name for an album and band - something more bold and refreshing. But the lyrics for every song lacked depth. It’s a country and rock fusion, with lyrics like a pop song. No song stood out to me.

Maybe as background music. Not something I'll pull out deliberately to listen to.

I don't give a flying burrito about this record

1.5 - I’ve heard a lot worse, but I didn’t really care for this.

Eh. It's fine. Feels like the same song throughout.

Boring for me

Crazy to see this released in 1969...not my cup of tea but at least +1 star in that it was a heavy influence for traditional country artists to follow

Thought I had heard of this band and had an idea what to expect. Nope. So wrong. Very honky tonk country. Maybe a little folk, with country feel. For personal reasons I liked Christine, but the rest of it was absolutely not for me. However, it reminded me of recent stuff I listen to that I enjoy, so I can recognize the influence but I'd be fine never listening to them again.

Country rock is a thing, this album may have been influential, but it is is not appealing to me as a 'country rock album'. It sounds more like a collection of demos - band members knew the songs, including structures, but hadn't fully settled on who was playing what when. So the pedal steel for example has some striking lines, but they don't gel with what the rest of band is doing. A musically-knowledgeable friend was keen on Gram Parsons when I was 19 but I can't work out what record we listened to. I read a bit about his life: trust fund and drugs, not a happy tale. Had a look at the lyrics of "Hippie Boy", that is a painful embarassment. Overall it's Pretty Poor (3/10).

I love burritos, but I don't love this.

Never heard of these guys and did not like it very much and will not listen again

Interesting americana/country album with a few catchy tunes. But nothing special on there that would make me come back intentionally.

Reinforcing for me that I don't really like country.

Mest country. Trækker lidt op med "Dark End of the Street". Lidt sjovt endelig at høre originalen.

Yeah it was okay. Not what I expected from this band. I’ve heard of them before but never actually heard their music till now and it did actually end up disappointing me. I can’t really put a finger on why, but yeah nah it’s a 2.

More like the flying bazinga brothers

Early country-rock, maybe the first of its kind? Either way, predictably I'm enjoying the songs that lean more towards rock. The singing could almost be gospel at times though. It's at its best when the music carries the songs, because I'm never going to love the vocals. Stereo mix isn't great either, but the instruments sound good. The two-parter Hot Burrito starts with a nice riff, it's a slower tune but with melody and emotional weight to it. Best part of the album so far by a wide margin. The second part is more upbeat, a good rocker. Heavy use of the fuzzbox, which I like. Hippie Boy is a quiet closer: speak-singing, keyboards and steel guitar. This isn't really my jam, but damn was 1969 a hell of a time for new music. Favorites: Dark End Of The Street, Hot Burrito (both parts #1 and #2). ** 1/2

realmente country mal do mundo

Based on the name, I was expecting something a lot more fun or at least entertaining. Instead, this one’s hard to get through, it's packed full of yawns.

There have been many white boys of the year for their contributions to music: Bon Dylan, Bowie, Nirvana, Yung Lean. Quadeca had a breakout year in 2025 imo. The Flying Burrito Brothers have failed to come close to earning such a prestigious title. This album is earns the opposite of such an honor — it acts as a precious reminder that many white boys have come along and squandered their unearned opportunities to make great art. This album is mostly frustrating with a few little gems hidden within. “My Uncle” was a fun, unique song with a clear story and memorable melody. But then songs like “Juanita” roll around and ruin the whole thing. 2/5, we didn’t need this one

At first this felt right in my wheelhouse despite the dumb name. By mid-album, however, I was starting to lose track of the differentiation between songs, particularly in the harmonies.

BEST SONGS: - Hot Burrito #1 - Do You Know It Feels

Непогано, але трохи нудно.

Yuck. I'm sure that this is awesome for some, but not for me!

I could not have guessed the genre of music based on the album cover, album name or band name. I find these ones really hard to rate, partly because country rock just isn't my thing, but also because judging by the lyrics they seem like a bunch of dicks.

It's ok. I don't like the first song it's just so woman-hatey. I'm not sure what ny review is... 2 stars? Maybe 3 because their voices are lovely. Hmm... tricksy. Ok no i wanted to like it more than I do like it so 2.

Pretty much a 60s country attempt at pop and it is simply boring.

boring

Listened to this many years ago and never got into it.

Album No. 0130 on my list. I had never before heard of either The Flying Burrito Brothers or their album "The Gilded Palace Of Sin". And to be honest, it's not really my cup of tea. First of all, "The Flying Burrito Brothers" must be one of the greatest band names I have ever heard. Really, really cool! In contrast to the music on this album, which is much less cool. The music is rather boring country rock, and I was annoyed by some of the lyrics, which were often a little over-simplistic. I could imagine that this influenced the development of the intersection of country and rock and that it was hence placed on this list. Purely artistically, I can't find any good reason to be frank. It's not a fully bad album, but it's pretty boring and not really recognizable in my opinion. I will add "Sin City", "My Uncle" (which was somewhat interesting to listen to, and "Hot Burrito #1" to my playlist. 2/5 stars.

The bass (brass?) in wheels is sick

It has been fun to gradually learn more about Gram Parsons. I liked his Byrds album and even solo albums a decent bit more than this. This one was fine. I agree with others that it felt much closer to country than rock. Although they do start using the feedback unexpectedly halfway through. Rating: 2.4

A needless intersection between twangy country and psychedelic folk. The album is basically a countrified Sweetheart of the Rodeo, and is too heavy-handed to be the ideal of Gram Parsons’ cosmic country.

Listened to this but absorbed nothing. Music sounded ok but not anything I loved or would think of revisiting. I’ve already forgotten the name of the album/band.

Country. At least it's older country.

I might be going too easy on this album but after hearing like 30 90s electronica albums, this is the first one that doesn’t make me want to rip my hair out. It’s a low bar, but I feel like at least one of them on this list deserves a 3.

Another album that fails at making me like country music. Like their name though.

The band has a funny name. The music didn't quite feel like it matched with the band's name? Pretty generic 60s music in my head.

Well. That was some country music, all right.

The book mentions this guy to be the Jimi Hendrix of white country music. Using a fuzz and a univibe on two songs does not warrant comparisons to Hendrix. My expectations were thus set high and ultimately very not met. If there is anything to be learned from this album and those that followed is that the genre was really slow to embrace change and new sounds.

Yee haw I guess.

The burrito is flying because I threw it away

I wanted to like this based on that fucking outstanding band name alone. The first song had me hopeful for some Allman Brothers style southern rock, but alas, it was a Country & Western album.

The gilded palace of sin was also the name of Len Houmous’ bedroom. 2.0 1/11 Christine’s Tune

Just incredibly dull. I really don't have much more to say about this, it's feels almost engineered to be boring to listen to. I'm coming to realise a large part of why the Beatles are so hyped is because everyone else releasing music in the '60s was just worse

Instantly forgettable

A bit country / Western

Not great, 2

In a nutshell: if the Everly Brothers made a country album. After comparing notes between Sweetheart of the Rodeo and Gilded Palace of Sin, I think this is the better album. Guilded Palace feels less forced, more natural compared to Sweetheart. Gram was not a good fit for The Byrds. Making a side project with Chris Hillman should have been the answer from the jump instead of Gram commandeering an established band for which he was a new member. As my track record shows, I’m not into country music and many of its varietals. I didn’t like this album but to get an idea how country has evolved I would recommend this first before Sweetheart or Gram’s solo works. Overall: 4/10

i didn’t love this. i was expecting some cool, classic psychedelia but what i got was some kinda boring old country. just didn’t do anything special

Boring

Very countrified rock. Inoffensive, but hardly exciting. Wheels feels like a parody of a country song written for s fake band in a film. Of the hot burritos, #2 is at least upbeat

Excellent group name aside, this was just far too country for me to really enjoy.

They get a 5/5 for the band name. But not for anything else. Its a toss up between whose voice I dislike more: Gram Parsons on lead or Chris Hillman on backing vocals. The combination on the first couple of tracks was a bit like nails on a chalkboard to me. I found it less annoying as the album went on, but I'd never say I really enjoyed it. The actual music is fine, if a bit dull to my ears. 5/5 for Chris Hillman's suit (love the blue), 2/5 for the record. 2/5

It sounded like if my Patsy Cline loving grandma and my CCR loving mom started a band. Not as bad as I thought it'd be, but i wont be listening to it again.

488/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

Utterly sauceless

A bit dull

The Gilded Palace Of Sin is a great name for an album. It evokes images of Caligula levels of debauchery and Ozzy levels of substance abuse. The kind of place where legends are made and lost. Somewhere we all think we'd want to visit but in reality only very few can survive because a certain level of lunacy is needed. However, if you take a closer look at the album cover, their Gilded Palace Of Sin seems to be a derelict outhouse surrounded by a load of old garden rubble. Not a good start. Further inspection reveals the men are dressed like bellends and don't have the facial expressions of those living the "dream" that their album title suggests. Pressing play reveals that this is because despite their best efforts and, to be fair to them, their incredible band and album naming talents, musically they have created the most run of the mill country rock album you can imagine. Their name suggests excitement, risk, boundary pushing and their music reveals none of those qualities. In and era that brought us the genuine boundary pushing talents of artists like The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd (to name but a few) who still get radio play today, it is no surprise that you may have heard of the The Flying Burrito Brothers but yet never heard The Flying Burrito Brothers. I didn't hate it, I just expected more from an album called The Gilded Palace Of Sin.

This is not for me.

Enjoyed the Aretha cover, but it's giving lower mid to me.

Too much twang means it's not my thang. I do agree with them that Vancouver is a great city.

Listless, sleep inducing, nice (but not in a good sense)...Just some of the adjectives I would use. I have heard better versions of "The Dark End of the Street (I have also heard much, much better versions). Realistically I can only give 2 stars

Would probably like it more if there were more of psychedelic stuff and less country

ужас

This surprised me. Given the name of the band, I was expecting some sort of wacky situation, like the Mothers of Invention or Captain Beefheart. Instead, I got country music with somewhat subversive lyrics. Not bad, but just not all that compelling.

Christine's Tune - Interesting Rock/Country fusion. Other than the instrumentation, it's somewhat forgettable. 6/10. Sin City - Good musicianship, not my favorite genre. 5/10. Do Right Woman - Good musicianship, not my favorite genre. 5/10. Dark End of the Street - Excellent guitar work, pedal steel is very nice. Lyrics are repetitive, mostly a forgettable song. 6/10. My Uncle - Excellent guitar work, pedal steel is very nice. Lyrics are repetitive, mostly a forgettable song. 6/10. Wheels - Interesting instrumentation. 5/10. Juanita - Formulaic Country song. 5/10. Hot Burrito #1 - Good musicianship, just not my style. 5/10. Hot Burrito #2 - Forgettable. 4/10. Do You Know How It Feels - Meh. 4/10. Hippie Boy - Sounds like a hippie's parody of Gospel music. And not a good one. 2/10.

I like the band name, neutral with the album Will I listen to again: 5%

Seemed like an okay take on Everly brothers harmonies.

X. It's a no from me.

Ok country album. Standout songs: SIn City My Uncle

I was kinda digging it, til it started drifting more & more country.

Nobody date these men. I'm disappointed that a band with such an awesome name has such mediocre music.

Is there anything worse than a slow-paced country music song? Not just in music, I mean is there anything worse to ever exist than a 60 BPM country music whine-fest? Luckily this album is evenly split between these teeth-grindingly hokey snoozers and some more upbeat country/bluegrass/rock. 2.0/5.0: Disappointing

I love burritos, but not these kind.

No more remarkable than the average 60s country/folk band.

It was okay

Just not a big fan of this album. I can understand why it might be included but didn't really land with me.

Genetic C&W but at least the bass player has some skills. 2.5 stars.

Bad version of the Grateful Dead, but My Uncle is a pretty good song.

Not my style

Raczej nic ciekawego. Ani na plus ani na minus. Przeżyłbym gdybym nie przesłuchał tego albumu. 2/5

Quite the range of sound - 70’s electric guitar along with country twang.

Country’s not my thing yet

Just ok

Oh, I know Christine's Tune! I think it was in the True Blood soundtrack? Anyway, I like that one but the rest are so slow. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Christine's Tune ⭐⭐: Didn't like it, didn't hate it. Saved one track.

mid asf

Country was always meant for people who find the pastoral vibe romantic. I don't. For me, as person who lived their whole life in the city and never disliked it, having to spend a couple of summers as a child in a countryside house was depressive and boring. So yeah, I don't like country. And combining it with 60s' rock, even the best examples of which I don't like all that much, doesn't do this album any favors. It has two or three songs that are a bit different, but that's not enough. Although I didn't hate it, this album wasn't very engaging for me. 5/10

it started off kind of slow and boring but then it picked up

Very much a ‘heard one, heard em all’ situation. In one ear and out the other.

Struggled with this one

Pretty excessive twang, in my opinion. Not my cup of communion juice. 2/4

Generic country 2.0

Its just kinda boring...

Another 60s album. I don't get along with much music from the 60s, same can be said for Country and Folk. This has all 3, with some twangy rock attempts. The guitar reminds me of the music at some festivals in Stardew Valley. Sometimes felt I was at a redneck wedding. Didn't take anything from this, I let this Burrito fly right on past. 2.

Very mid, could be three stars but

For the countless times I’ve heard of the Flykng Burrito Brothers, I’m glad I finally listened to them. It was fine. I don’t really need to do that again now.

Not really my style. Not bad. 2.5

i did not like this

Country rock definitely not my thing.

Some enjoyable songs with fun lyrics. Great band name too.

Its okay not really for me

Ok this is probably the greatest disappointment in modern history. Joking aside, giving this band a comical name does nothing for this band. Like it severely hurt my first impression of the band. I had to give it several chances and it never recovered from my disappointment that it wasn’t a comedy band. And then for the reveal to be that they are a country band is almost as devastating. The redeemable part of this album is knowing that this album is super influential and innovative and basically created “country rock” as we know it today. Country rock may be FAR from my favorite genre, but I can appreciate that I wouldn’t have “Tuesdays gone” or “hang on loosely” (obviously my favorite county rock songs) without this album. So for that alone it gets a solid 2, but had they just added some comedy or just a few whimsical silly songs this album could’ve been a 4 or 5. TLDR: kind of a disappointment but still valuable to the growth of country and southern rock.

For cowboyagtigt til mig!

its fine. There's nothing more to say, its just fine

Weird country rock stuff. No thanks

Pleasant enough at first but then just became very very bored.

Shrug. Competent. Unclear as to what was influential about this. You won't want to puncture your own ear drums from listening to this. I've seen better local bands that never made it, though.

Very 60s. Not in a good way

Not sure where the "fusing traditional sources like folk and country with other forms of popular music like gospel, soul, and psychedelic rock" part was. Just sounded like Good Ole Boy country & western to me.

Easy listening. Bit dodge at times.

Kinda ok - a couple of stand out tracks but on the whole … might need educating on why this album features… craving anything thats not more white music if I’m being honest… must just be the random release of albums

So uneventful, bland, not good but not horrible.

I liked track 1; how it started out folksy country. It reminded me of another band around that era, but I couldn’t think of who. Then it kinda just went downhill from there… it kinda slogged around and didn’t deviate from the same same.

Imagine my disappointment that a band with the name Flying Burrito Brothers playing a song titled Sin City could sound like some weak-ass, sad-ass country. Fuck outta here man. Everything else on this in mid-3 music (the Hot Burrito songs were the only good-ish songs in my view), but I'm dropping them down to a 2 because I couldn't get over the Sin City thing even after listening to the full album.

For having such a cool band name I was hoping for some way cooler music. Pretty boring all around but I did enjoy Hot Burrito #2 with some of the fuzzzzzzzzzz. BORRRRRINNGGGGGG

Not my cup of tea, only liked like two songs really.

fukn draft dodgers

Clearly this is the the origin of Creedence, and The Eagles, and all of those types of bands. It's... I dunno... cute? But it far too country for me.

We don’t need any more country

Wasn't too bad, bit of Americana. High 2s

Some good moments but a little too country for my taste.

great bass lines!

Started out with some mild promise but got slowly worse
