Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Not a big fan of the music itself, and even less of a fan of the lyrics and themes of the album.
There is an issue with listening to many albums on this list. Any album that did something different/experimental for its time AND was influential enough to warrant being on this list will sound stereotypical and overdone from our perspective. I'm sure the Flying Burrito Bros' country rock sound was interesting in 1969, but we've had 50 years of country music since then that just sounds like this. Sure, props to them for being part of the redefinition/creation of a genre, but why would I bother listening to this today, especially when people have done it better 100 times over by now?

Easily forgettable
2 - liked the first song but the rest was some slow lifeless country
Surprisingly eclectic sound for such a short album. Starts with some corny country that evolves into a Chicago-adjacent sound that ends up at almost gospel by the end? Lot of interesting things going on musically, but didn't really connect with me
Parsons should be a must for me, but this stuff never really speaks to me the way I would expect. It is just ok. 2.5/5
Not for me
Ok
Inoffensive but not very interesting to me so far.
Maybe I would have been more into this had they been called the Flying Chalupa/Al Pastor/Torta/Crunchwrap Supreme Brothers?
I've heard of The Flying Burrito Brothers, and this album cover is familiar to me, but I don't think I've ever heard a song by these gents before. I've reviewed Gram Parsons's Grievous Angel, and most The Byrds' albums, so I have a decent idea of what to expect on this album. Let's get country rockin' on a Tuesday! The Gilded Palace of Sin was pretty underwhelming to me. For an album that was supposed to be a blend of country rock with psychedelic elements, all I heard was country and western music. Being country and western music isn't what made this album underwhelming though. Nothing on this album really stood out to me as being particularly well done. The vocals were pretty flat, the songwriting wasn't consistently strong, and it wasn't very unique musically either. The album did get a bit better as it went along, with the oddly titled "Hot Burrito" songs being the strongest part of the album to me, due to some pretty good song writing and some nice piano playing. I enjoy hearing the pedal steel guitar, but the pedal steel wasn't really prominently featured on this album, which was a bummer. This album was a bit of a chore to get through, and I spent my time listening to it hoping to hear or feel something that made it stand out, only to be left empty-handed by the end.
wow never knew the history behind these guys, ex Byrds! Not my genre, but I appreciate - this blended into the background after a couple of tracks
I truly don't know how many more old country albums I can sit through
For a group with such an exciting name, this album sure was a disappointment to me. Some of it’s fine but mostly it felt overly schmaltzy and not-aged-well. (1.5 stars)
Daaamn bro, maybe its not my things...I got bored perhaps it's cool to know one or two to expand your musical taste but since I'm not into this type of music and album is a bit too much
A mix of cliché country and tear jerkers. Very well made though. Really good if you like this kind of thing. I love some country, but this leaves me stone cold.
Old school hippie and twangy - rather boring
Didn't enjoy this much
Just kinda boring imo
Most of this wasnt bad. A little repetitive at times, but I wasnt bored over its short ~37 mins or so - biggg plus in my book Coming at this with the perspective of what country was in the late 60s makes me much more impressed. You can definitely feel a stronger groove in these songs that makes me want to dance and sing along compared to Conway Twitty or Ray Price Fun fact: These guys played the legendary Altamont show where the hells angles killed someone at a free festival put on by the stones
Having sex with my girlfriend between two pipes out in a shed. The rest was just words jumbled up
Aufgenommen wurde The Gilded Palace of Sin in den A&M Studios in Hollywood.
Eh, kinda sad. Liked the sound though. Lyrically not for me.

I expected more. Why? I don't know. I guess the band name and album name suggested I was in for a treat. Instead, I got a cup of melted ice cream.
Not a huge fan of this one. I was mostly just bored Standouts Christine's Tune Hippie Boy 2/3
Twangy.
Yee-haw!
It gets a bonus star for the band name but wow that was dull
Impeccable band name. Lackluckstre music.
2- Stars (4/15)
I get the significance of this album as an innovation and I could hear so many bands that copied them, but not an enjoyable listen for me.
Very country. Not many burritos
They may or may not have been the first to do this generic country rock, but they're not the first I heard and they're not the best. So I'm not impressed. They're not doing anything wrong and also nothing exceptionally well. Doesn't help that I don't like this style of music.
01) Christine's Tune - 6,5 02) Sin City - 5,5 03) Do Right Woman - 5,5 04) Dark End of the Street - 6,0 05) My Uncle - 5,0 06) Wheels - 5,5 07) Juanita - 5,0 08) Hot Burrito #1 - 5,0 09) Hot Burrito #2 - 5,5 10) Do You Know How It Feels - 5,5 11) Hippie Boy - 4,0 TOTAL: 5,36 (54/100) Current ranking: 387/436 So it's not enough to have hundreds of The Byrds albums on this list, we also have to listen to albums by their former members. As a European, I'd rather listen to every Brit Pop album ever made than this American country crap.
p161. 1969. 2 stars. Prototype Eagles, but without the standout tunes and a bit too much yeehaw. You can see why it was influential, but it's not my thing.
The Byrds, CSNY of zelfs The Band. 6/10 Highlights: Dark End Of The Street Hot Burrito #2
Interesting country / classic rock album with a loose feel. I was actually surprised by how loose it was when listening, like several times I can hear the bass getting ahead of the rest of the band (like in "Hot Burrito #2) and it was a little distracting. Still a nice little tune though. I have to admit I was hoping for more here... the band name is silly and the album title on the other hand sounds quite serious and I wasn't sure what to expect. Unfortunately the music is pretty straightforward. While a nice listen, I don't think it necessarily should be on this list.
Nah not my thing at all
This album nothing’d me. It nothing’d me HARD!
suits you sir
This wasn’t super up my alley
Not a fan, bit annoyed
Not really my type, but I can listen to it in the background
Otro sin comentarios...debo estar cansado
4/10 - It was boring 60's music.
Really good harmonies, but not a single memorable song
Country rock. No thank you. Soul cover without the soul just drove this home to me, I almost stopped everything and stuck Aretha on right then and there.
Didn't know what to expect from this, but I didn't mind it. Skirted far enough away from country to be acceptable!
It must be country week for this project, I can’t escape this shit. Please make it stop!!! As far as the music, it wasn’t bad just unremarkable to me.
The cover screams "Psychedelic", but the music is Country. Both are highly derivative. 2/5
Another country rock group. There were 100 of these groups in the 60s and then in the 70s it was just the Eagles and they became the biggest band in the world. This is Crosby, Stills and Nash with less of an edge. Dark End Of The Street is a good song. This reminds me of Kenny Rogers and the First Edition. This is Cotton Jones' favorite band. There's something missing from this album. The country/gospel/roots rock influences on this album should make it something, but it just feels corny, like another bunch of fake cowboys. Hippie Boy is the worst song on the album because the vocals are so ridiculous.
I would have loved to be there when they chose this name for the band, it sounds like a fun meeting. Aside from that, there was nothing that interesting.
Okay, but not great.
Top Three Songs: 1) Dark End of the Street 2) Sin City 3) My Uncle Bottom Three Songs: 1) Do Right Woman 2) Do You Know How It Feels 3) Juanita
So boring.
Rant Time: I can't believe there is another Byrds related album I didn't know about, I think that brings the total up to 12. That is insane that this list has 12 album from a band that 1. isn't that great 2. isn't that relevant and 3. At least 3 of these album weren't even successful. The review says: " it was not a commercial success" and peaked at 164. The Gene Clark review said he never had a successful album and he has 2 on the list. WHY!?! He made boring music that people didn't care about and still don't. There are plenty of other albums that could have been chosen. Especially around the late 60's early 70's. Such as: Pink Floyd - Animals/Meddle Led Zeppelin - House of the Holy The Beatles - Let It Be (I'm not even a huge fan of this one) The Velvet Underground - Loaded The Doors - Strange Days Simon And Garfunkel - Sounds of Silence But whatever, I guess it's time I listen to another bland late 60's country "rock" album were every song sounds the same. The actual review: Wow this guy has an annoying voice, and the songs are boring, what a surprise. In all honesty I would have probably given this a 3 and called it bland, but The Byrds just piss me off and now I am in a bad mood. Low 2.
Definitely not my thing - this album has an amateur feel to it that I couldn't stop noticing in all of the songs.
I was expecting something a bit wild and wacky from The Flying Burrito Brothers and an album called The Gilded Palace of Sin. And this was certainly not that. Also, how is this ‘alternative’ country? This type of music just does not do it for me. Samey and uninteresting
countrizinho legalzinho.
Young lads singing over Spongebob title card music. Heartwarming. Forgettable country. Expected something more wacky from a band name like that.
Twaaaang. No thank you.
Musically very good, but way too country for my taste.
The zany name really got my hopes up. “The Gilded Palace of Sin?” Come on, I can practically feel the hardwood church pew against my backside as I listen to this snore-fest.
Did not care much for this at all.
Back in the day, this apparently made quite the buzz as a country-rock hybrid, but I don't hear anything other than country, musically. Some of the lyrics are topical but is that where the rock is? I don't get it.
Not terrible, but not memorable either despite the wonderful band name.
Added a couple of tracks to the 1001 Experience Playlist but really nothing special or Groundbreaking here. This could've been any late 60's to mid 70's insert generic band name here
cool name tho
Frekar uneventful. Gátu ekki einu sinni gert góða útgáfu af Dark end of the street. Meh.
My favorite part of this was that they titled not one but two tracks “Hot Burrito.” The actual music didn’t do it for me.
Sold this album 5 years ago for $35. Some good guitar work and decent enough songs, but a little too twangy for my tastes.
I thought I was going to like this a lot. When the fuzzy guitar kicked in on the first track, I thought we were going to have a really innovative album of genre mashups. Instead I ended up thinking that it was mostly a country album that never got quite as weird as that first song augured.
Meh just not my cup of tea.
If ever there was a band that did not match their band name, this is it. Fairly repetitive country music - Sin City was good, I swear I've heard it before. Otherwise absolutely not notable, whatsoever.
The flying burrito brothers name suggested something more interesting than this! In the end it's just a bit dull and dated
Not as good as I remember. Burrito deluxe is a much more memorable album with better hit songs. Lots of country rock albums from this era that are better.
Never heard of these guys. Just reading the book by it's cover, never would've guessed this type of music. very country. Not my style.
Meh. 60’s country mixed with 60’s California rock.
Some real Honky Tonk Honky Tonk music
Geen boeiende nummers, niet vooruitstrevend
I had actually heard this one before thanks to some music nerd friends of mine. It’s just a shade too country for my tastes
Inoffensive soft country plinking “rock” music. Not my cup of tea, but I’m sure plenty of people strap on their boots, don the cowboy hat and line dance their way to the record player for it.
Kind of a sweet little twangy hippie album. Fine for what it is.
So many false brothers in music. Whether they be chemical or jungle, byrd or flying burrito. Speaking of the Byrds, the common element here is not just fake siblings, but Gram Parsons. I didn’t care for his Byrds contributions, didn’t care for his solo album, and don’t really care for The Flying Burrito Brothers either.
A little too country for my tastes.
Not sure why this album is on the list. It's not a bad album, but there's nothing I can see that it does better than lots of other music. Fly band name though.
Magical album. Every time I press play it makes me want to do more productive things. Will put on and not listen to it many times in the future Liked the outro in Hot Burrito #2
boring but listenable but oh so boring
Bland
not a fan
Twangariffic
One point for Country and Western but bonus point for the best name on the list so far.
I might have given this a baseline three stars, but Do Right Woman is a great song and their performance of it here is tragic. Overall bland country rock. It’s hard for me to believe this was even groundbreaking in 1969. Not sure why it’s considered significant.
Yep, this is some old American stuff I haven’t heard before and will probably never hear again. Favourite track: Hot Burrito #1.
Err what da fork!
Too much country for my taste.
This is the kind of country I could happily live without. Really annoying twang to it. Another album with Gram Parsons, formerly of The Byrds, I reckon the compilers of this list need to widen their horizons a bit.
I love the first few bars of one of these songs, so that's worth a star. The rest of it? Influential but also uninspiring and very samey
I did not enjoy this at all
I don't quite like the country sound but other than that it is ok. 2.5★
Country rock, chill nok, men ikke flyvende nok
Ну кантри пацанячье, сидеть на porch with my trusty remington rifle smoking a cigar.
Starts out with a song of howlingly bad lyrics with dead rhymes. Carries on with pretty much every dull country cliché. Maybe they invented the clichés, who knows.
Spaghetti Western sound
like a lot of sixties country, the gilded palace of sin is a gentle, untroubled listen. my intel reports this as a noteworthy addition because the flying burrito brothers were the blueprint for a lot of country in the following decades for how they incorporated folk, rock, soul. they have the typical sixties sound, but my non-bat-like ears missed all these intricacies. mostly, the twang vocals kept me firmly in the sixties! i couldn't feel as excited about this album as other fifties or sixties country, but it was not an unpleasant listen.
On the surface, not very interesting country music, but listen a bit closer and there are some unusual and more varied sounds and some cool lyrics. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Hippie Boy Date listened: 31/03/24
Veered hard towards average country
Decent listen. Not my thing but I can respect the performances, songwriting, and production.
boring country
Just ok 2/5
The music is as good as to be expected by a band named "The Flying Burrito Brothers"
It sounds like a blend of old time country and roots with the odd placement of electric guitar. I had heard the legend of Gram Parsons and still struggled to get into this recording. Bernie Leadon was in this group for a short while prior co-founding they Eagles.
‘Flying Burrito Brothers’: Goes about as well as you would expect for an album by a band with a name like that. Pretty safe to say I will never ever listen to this again. ‘Hot Burrito #2’ is the one saving grace on the record. Skip the rest.
Not very good. Musically not very interesting and the vocals are really bad at times.
Bit borring
I just couldn't get into this.
Not a fan
Hard to stay focused on these songs, they were just meh. Probably a reason I had never heard it before.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
Not one of my favorites...
Back in the day this was all the rage. I find it tiresome to listen to now. Kinda like a bad backyard country band of 2024. I know they were groundbreakers, but sometimes things just have their day and then just don't deserve anything more than an acknowledgment. I skimmed the songs to see if any could hold my interest longer than a minute. Nope. I think they're later albums were better, and members went on to do much more interesting things. Guess ya gotta start somewhere
Oof - I really, really don’t like country music and this is very country. This album puts me in a predicament because I thought it was very good country but I still dislike listening to it. Listens: 2 Fave Track: Hot Burrito #2 Rating: 2
Not my style
could i write poetry to this? n
2.5 60s country
Don’t prefer hearing full time harmonies vs dynamic use of harmony vocals.
This is probably as good as this specific genre gets, however I struggle to find the relevance.
2/5 way too country for my taste
Super forgettable country.
2.5
Not my personal tastes. I’m not into country rock. But it was a cohesive album. I would not revisit it, though. None of the songs really stuck out to me.
Kickstarted an entire genre that I hate. The first track was alright, but from there it was rapidly downhill. 1.5*
Not my thing.
Slow country rock. Not for me. It's not terrible music but just something I'm not really into.
Dude this album was ass. Like seriously, what state of mind do you need to be in to enjoy this shit.
Too slooooooow for me
Hope they fly far away from my speakers, Give me the exciting NYC music of Television, Talking Heads, Velvet Underground anytime and not this utterly boring USA Country stuff. Sorry, Gram Parsons, but 2 stars today.
The most noted thing about this album is the ridiculous name of the band. It worked, I won’t forget it. It’s a decent album, a blend of country and rock mostly, some folk thrown in. As is often the case with this old albums I haven’t heard before, nothing really stands out and it’s time to move on 5.6/10
Average, no real takeaways from this. Album dragged in a couple spots.
Very boring songs. I don't like Country, actually.
I got reminded of why I always say ‘the only genre I don’t like is country music, unless it’s Carrie Underwood’ Cute tho
Not for me this one fav track: Hot burrito #2
Felt like there was some pretty cooked Catholic guilt on this bad boy haha. Some horrific lyrics. Sometimes felt tongue in cheek and others not. Anyway I didn't like it at all. One and a half. Fave track: Dark End of the Street
I can see why this was influential but at the same point I do not think I would seek this out to listen to it again. Pleasant sounding and melodic though!
Country and rock not for me but I can see the appeal I guess. High 2s
Favorite tracks was Hot Burrito #2
Lots of country twang. Not a genre I enjoy.
No matter how much I try, I don't enjoy country music, even with this album's rock n' roll makeup. They deserve extra credit for being so influential in music history (I believe in the Wikipedia article) and for "Hot Burrito #1," which is at least enjoyable.
This LP is at its best when it stays in the uptempo Country ditty territory, so it’s a shame that it chooses to opt for such slow and mournful tracks instead.
I think the 60s was the first era that music production wasn’t regimented by tyrants called stuff like The Colonel or actual Mafia men, hence we get this bizarre concoctions swinging wildly within itself. I think I’ve narrowed it down for 5 categories Great and will listen again: Dark Side if the Street Started off not really caring about but When I think about it, actually enjoyed it : my uncle, hot burrito 2 Music i imagine the people from Tremors listened to : Christine’s tune, Sin City, hot burrito 1, do you know how it feels Abysmal: Do Right Woman, Juanita , hippie boy Has a boat horn or something that caused Physical pain : Wheels
I'm not really into country, but I can understand the importance of this album in its context
Meh. It was ok but pretty generic. Sounded very similar to other artists of the time. Maybe a 2.5?
Was alright probably won’t seek out additional
Kinda pre-country rock and a bit of an Eagles vibe. Pretty slow overall and not really my thing. They do get an extra star for their name. 2/5
A bit slow overall. Not really my jam.
How many goddamn country albums are on this list. It's all the same.
YAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAWN
I can almost rate this one a three, but the steel guitar kills any chance.
ehhhh maybe like 2.5. Just kinda boring not a lot going on to be memorable
Before going in, I thought "oh, is The Flying Burrito Brothers a funny indie band with quirky lyrics and clever wordplay?" Their name is so astronomically absurd, feels like some prime Internet humour. But oh no, these guys are old, enough to be my parents sort of old. Nice to see that back in '69, silliness was not dead. In the end though, this was too simple and average an album for a band with a funny name on an album with a less funny, but no less amusing name. Completely and utterly average to my ears in every way. The reasonably short length of the album and some stand-outs kept this from completely stumbling to a messy and bloody halt, but boy oh boy, it sure be struggling.
This morning I'm just not into country.
How dare they sully the good name of burrito with this pseudo 60s country rock album
Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: Yeah, it was decent Favourite song: didn’t have one
Country music where you can hear that it is from 1969. Not really a fan of country music. No real energizers, it is all a bit mundane, equal volumes, nothing that jumps out...
Pretty generic uninspiring country, first three tracks of Side 2 are decent, that's about it.
Not as bad as some reviewers would have you expect.
Country ain’t normally my jam. This was chill proto-psychobilly, which gives it more than the one star it normally would.
most country sounds fake even when it’s played by actual country musicians
Early country rock/fusion? Doesn't really land
Muy country a ratos. Me gustó mucho "Hot burrito #2" y "Hippie boy".
Great band name, not great music. It's a bit too slick and modern to retain the charm of old timey country, but doesn't have the attitude or invention of good rock music. Just a bit ordinary.
Ok not at all my favorite or wourth a relisten
Love the band name, but I can't stand country style music.
This music reminds me those biopics of musicians that started in the South and how an unrelated band was playing music on stage but weren't very good and nothing ever happened with them, all while there is dialogue around the main character happened in the foreground. Yeesh, this was a struggle to listen to. 4/10.
Nope
too Twangy, not my thangy
its like if hippies made a country album 2.5
Some interesting bits but didn't do much for me overall
2/5. Yeah it was okay. The “alt-country” it created was surely in its beginning stages, didn’t age very well.
I mean it's fine but I don't have the desire to listen again ever
I realize they had future stars and were influential, but their sound is plain silly
Favorites: -Christine's tune -Hot burrito #1
If nothing else these guys bring it with the band and album names. But I couldn't really get that into this album. *shrug*
It's pretty alright, quite funny in a certain way. Overall a fine mix of country and psychedelic rock... but mostly just country.
Traditional Country and Western style - a positive start that got repetitive about two songs in. Great at naming bands - terrible at playing music.
A good burrito should have enough filling to never feasibly get airborne
Meh.
At first I thought. "Well, this album definitely is NOT for me." But the more I got into it, I realized that while I didn't like the more country songs, I did enjoy some of the songs that got a bit psychedelic. They reminded me a lot of the Grateful Dead. Made me think of if the Beatles did country rock instead of pop rock. Not a bad album, but not necessarily one I really enjoyed or will return to. Not exactly sure why it's on the list either.
Pleasant soft country rock, but it’s not all that special to me Hippie boy was funny
"Everything I love about the Eagles but with way more substance" says another review. Maybe... but with far less striking melodies and less catchy tunes as well. I have to be honest with myself here: if those middle-of-the-road country sounds are what people call "substance", it means I'm not interested in the latter then (sarcasm). The comparison made in that review is a little ludicrous in my honest opinion. I'm not a *huge* Eagles fan, but there's probably a reason their songs stayed in people's heads. And it seems to me the ones of Gram Parsons are not up to that level. Sure, you can find genuine melodic inspiration in cuts such as "Dark End Of The Street" or "Hot Burrito #2", but there's not nearly enough of it to make this album worth my time. Next, please. Number of albums left to review: 668 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 161 Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 78 Albums from the list I will certainly *not* include in mine (many others are more essential to me): 93 (including this one)
Great band name. Great album name. 1969...what a time to be alive. Twangy, country feel on this one. Very folksy.
After yesterdays album, I feel really bad for the flying burrito brothers. Your classic late 60’s “rock” album. Normally I’d have given them a 3 and moved on but I skipped songs and just kept thinking about Kendrick and it made these songs sound even worse. I kept picturing this as a great album to listen to back in the 70’s while cruising in your car. But in todays time, I don’t think I’d listen again.
In more ways than one, we find ourselves in hippie country. It's about 90% country and 10% psych rock. Not a mixture that works as well here as it could. The Byrds did the country departure much better if you ask me. This one lacks bite or much of anything distinct. Any album assigned today would've had a hell of a time following Kendrick's To Pimp a Butterfly, but this one hit with a thud. Not at all bad, just painfully decent. Favorite tracks: Do Right Woman, Hippie Boy, Hot Burrito #1. Album art: Really love this cover, excellent font, outfits are cool as hell. Got my hopes extremely high for something more psychedelic. Alas, not so. 2.5/5
50-50 oikein hyviä biisejä ja sitten (mun makuun) vähän moneen kertaan kuultuja. Varmaan hyvä livebändi.
2 Apple Music has this album listed under rock. I can see if but I would compare it to that Merle Haggard album. The difference for me is that I enjoyed the Merle Haggard album. This one started pretty strong with some nice steel guitar sprinkled through. Lyrically speaking there’s not much for me. It got pretty boring pretty quick. There were a few spots where it grabbed my attention like the song that sounds like they’re running a tuba through a distortion pedal. Beyond that I haven’t got much more to say about this one.
2 Terrible band name, and the music isn’t much better. Pure country, but I really don’t feel like there’s anything interesting going on here with the songwriting or storytelling, and to be honest I really don’t care for Gram Parsons’ voice. Why the hell was this guy hanging out with the Stones? I’m guessing Keith Richards was his dealer. Anyway, not a big fan of the album, but if you’re not familiar with the story of Gram Parsons’ corpse being stolen by his friends for a ceremonial cremation, I would recommend looking into it because it’s pretty interesting - the Disgraceland podcast and its book adaptation cover it.
Not something I'm really into. The vocals are beautiful, and I appreciate the every song actually does sound different, but I wouldn't go back to this. Interesting band name, though. Fave track(s): Hot Burrito #1
The second country album in a row that I've gotten. Not sure what I was expecting when I saw the band name and decade this was made, but it definitely wasn't early proto-countryrock. I actually enjoyed Emmylou Harris much more compared to this. This was crap from start to finish.
Not my jam
Interesting Album But not for me
Classic country, lap steel, lots of twang. It's ok
Apparently these guys are a spin-off from the relatively unremarkable group The Byrds, because of course they are. The latter have 5 albums on here, so what's one more? Anyways, it's fine for what it is, they did manage to get me to sit through a country album until the end, but they certainly didn't have me pining for more. Unlike real burritos, of which one can never get enough. 2/5 avocados 🥑🥑
Country? Rock? Late 60's. Silly name? Mediocre love songs? Meh.
Meh
Why. Guess you had to be there.
This album was mediocre. I think it had some special songs and then others that were annoying but nothing to make it a memorable album. I think the best part was their name 😭
Leuke bandnaam.
We got two types of music here boy. Country and rock. Too much country though one or two absolute tunes.
A bit drivelly
Best Song: Hot Burrito #2. At least things are starting to get somewhat interestingly electric here. Worst Song: Sin City. Bit too honky tonk for me. Overall: Sometimes you see a combination of a band name and an album name that seems like it might be interesting, but then the artists absolutely fumble the bag. Why give yourself such a silly name to just go out and sing sad little country ditties?
2 Grandma
Would enjoy, but not in the mood for it at the moment.
2.5. Just ok for me.
Okej, but I don't love it.
Ugh fake country sung by hippies.
Too country for my taste.
Not for me. Less awkwardly awful than I usually find country music, but I would actively avoid listening to it again.
Another album that means much more in historical context, than it is an actual good album. It is a country band, that mixes different genres with it, most notably rock, psychedelic rock and gospel. You can hear this album being molded in the same pot as some of The Beatles, early Pink Floyd or The Beach Boys. You could exchange couple songs between those bands and no one would be surprised. The only problem, in my opinion, is that as a whole, The Gilded Palace Of Sin didn't withstand the test of time. Not only I couldn't recognise any of those songs, but also nothing really was good enough even to recommend. Tracks that were pure country were simply not good enough. Those mixed with rock were better, but still at best could fit to the B side of bands mentioned before, so usually first to forget. As I mentioned once, I will try not to rate albums on the base of historical context, but only on the base of how much I liked it right now. And with this little detail I can't give more than two stars.
Oh for fuck's sake, 1969. Judging by the band name and those lairy outfits I'm gonna say joke country? Ok it's more just straight up country. Maybe 1960s hipsters were subtler and the joke flew over my head. I'd say I'm not sure what it's doing on this list but LOL as if that matters anymore. 2/5.
not a single song to remember
Ganske basic bitch country, om eg huske riktig
Not bad. 2.5/5
cowboy music. longing vocals. twanging guitars. I much prefer Willie Nelson.
Takler ikke køntri. Hvorfor måtte disse her og f.eks. Byrds begynne med det?
plagsomt
One look at the album cover and I hit play as quick as a could before I had a chance to think better of it. The first couple songs have lyrics so cliched it hurts, and the music is nearly so, except also weird. Reading the Wikipedia entry these aren't just any burritos, which helps me understand how this album didn't just sink without a trace like it should have. The music itself is competently played, and maybe one song like this would be fun, but a whole album is way too much. Way. Too. Much.
Not my jam. Sick name tho
Well it’s not bab but it’s quite meh
With this weird of a name, I was really hoping to like this album. Oh well.
Almost a 3... but not quite.... Pretty decent for a country act though
The Gilded Palace of Sin by The Flying Burrito Brothers (1969) When I first heard of this band back in 1969, I was puzzled as to whether the adjective “Flying” modified the noun “Brothers” or the noun “Burrito”. Were they ‘flying bothers’ or did they have an affection for ‘flying burritos’? This syntactical ambiguity was sufficient for me to pass it over for bands whose names made more sense, like Three Dog Night. In any case, I missed The Gilded Palace of Sin altogether, which is not to say I missed the gilded palace of sin itself. No, sir. The Parsons/Hillman songwriting here is an improvement over their earlier country rock work with The Byrds (Sweetheart of the Rodeo [1968]), where their best-sounding songs were written by others (Dylan, Haggard, Guthrie, Louvin, etc.). Themes here touch on perennial concerns like faith, eschatological hope, sacrificial love, the sad fact of sin, and the rationality of draft dodging. Chord progressions and melodies are drearily standard, in the 1960s country vein, lazily laid down with predictably drawling elocution. But it makes for an anxiety-free listening experience. A curious spoken word ballad “Hippie Boy” closes out the record, which prompts thought but lacks resolution, with its morally flat ending. The engineering is flawed by excessive separation between the Gram Parsons/Chris Hillman vocals in the mix, emphasizing the lack of both rhythmic and tonal synchronization between the voices. A nice cameo high tenor harmony by David Crosby on “Do Right Woman” is not blended well in the recording. And the (uncredited) horns on “Hot Burrito #2” are poorly recorded—so poorly that one wonders if it’s not horns at all, but a bad synthesizer. But no, this is in the pre-synthesizer era. Maybe the horn players said “Don’t you dare put our names in the credits!” I dunno. Chris Hillman’s electric guitar performance is above par, but not brilliant. And the rather pedestrian bass lines from Chris Ethridge could have been significantly improved with more attention to intonation and polish. However, this was 1969, when bass playing by anyone other than Paul McCartney or John Paul Jones was still in its formative period. But the musical highlight of the album is the talented but idiosyncratic pedal steel of “Sneaky” Pete Kleinow, sometimes colored with intriguing effects like fuzzbox and the quivering sound of the Hammond Leslie, which is more conventionally applied to electronic organ. Listen to “Wheels” for a combination of pedal steel effects. Fascinating. This album is okay, but if you skip it you won’t be culturally stunted. 2/5
This is again, not my thing. There are several albums like this on here - all of them sound the same. The Eagles are the only band that can pull this off, but that's because they don't stay in one lane...They try life in the fast lane (lol).
Really wasn't into it. It was bland and droning.
Too country for me
eh
I was expecting more given the name. Wank farmer music. 🐓🐖🐎🐂
I found this so dull and uninteresting to listen to
Dirgey
Perus kitarointia. Ei kyllä säväyttänyt erityisesti.
Kantri on kyl vähän eh. sinänsä kyl kova levynnimi ja varmaan kantrille poikkeukselliset tekstit.
Some interesting lyrics, but Country just isnt my cup of tea.
60s hippy country music, low on impact. Stand out track: their cover of Dark End Of The Street.
More American music for American people… I just can’t connect with this stuff on any level!
The country style is not my taste, although I admire the classic soul covers.hot burrito #2 and dark end of the street are the only sings I liked.
Song #1 - So far it's alright, not exactly my style. Song #2 - Looked the band up and DAMN they had many members. If the next song is similar I probably won't be listening to this again. Song #3 - It's not bad, just won't listen to this again.
While the lyricism was a bit more interesting than the other country artist I've received in Steve Earle, it wasn't enough to pull me into the twangy country of The Flying Burrito Brothers. I did enjoy some of the messier arrangements but again never enough to be engaged by the music. Just really never did it for me.
2/5
Some nice lyrics, but other than that I didn't really care about this album.
Meh.
Odd Christian country rock
Ouuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu - auuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuu
Sellanen... Vähän kiukulla kyl piti kuunnella loppuun
No los pillo.... Country 1969
Too slow for me.
Underwhelmed my underground expectations, the textbook definition of "hodge-podge."
I just can't stand country.
Hokey cornpone nonsense served up by a bunch of slumming rockers who should know better than to sling this dreck.
The handful of parts I liked involved the pedal steel guitar and no vocals. And sometimes the mandolin. This was getting 2 stars, until I got to Hot Burrito #1.
Unfuckinglistenable Garbage
This is very much not my thing. Great name though.
it was ass
This album is my nightmare. Give me more Kraftwerk, anything but this, I promise to be kinder about those German men this time.
hard pass
I'm starting to have a feeling that country is way overrepresented on this list. It might be my
Barely able to make it through this. ★
That was awful
I know every band is somebody’s favorite band ever, but I don’t know how I would respond if someone told me the flying burrito brothers was their favorite band. I don’t love this type of country music (or most country music for that matter)
Boring
An absolute struggle to sit through. Despite its historical status as the birth of country-rock, the record fails to escape the tropes of traditional country: nasal vocals, predictable I-IV-V structures, and a lackluster rhythmic section. The rock influence is too thin to save it from being a tedious and uninspiring experience for anyone who isn't a fan of the genre
Maybe special for their time but now really boring.
I hate it and hope that I don't hear anything like this ever again in my life.
its really slow and unimpressive. gives me no joy at all
This challenge has officially jumped the shark.
Hard pass.
Halverwege geluisterd.
Absolutely not. I like their suits though.
- melkone nimi bändille, jätkät lähteny - no tää oli aika katkeraa paskaa
This Burrito was stale as fuck
Meh, it's alright for country music. Not really my thing though.
The USA is a very silly place. Look at all thes guys, hanging out amidst broken faggots of wood in their local sandpit, adorned in their Sunday best. Nobody smile! It'll give us credibility to the music purchasing youth! Imagine how much better this album would be if there was no steel guitar. Significantly better. It would be significantly better. Alas, it would still be crap though. 9 out of these 11 songs are unlistenable.
#team Christine. The cover of do right woman is blasphemy.
< the Beatles No thank you
Behind the psych and folky stuff, there’s this type of country I just don’t like. Sorry, but this record is not good
(17/100)
That band name was writing some big cheques that the music had no intention of cashing
