Reviews (page 3 of 7)
Solid rock, a longtime favorite. An interesting flavor to this sort of post-heavy turn-of-the-century era alternative, is it Welshness?
Just like supergrass, very easy to hear where it came from, and what it helped inspire, which happen to be some of my favorite music in both directions.
Great album, very consistent
I don't have the same sort of deep rooted love for this album that I do for "Rings Around The World", but it's still a lot of fun. I think with more familiarity it could rise to a 5.... Fave track - "Something For The Weekend" for the more scuzzy rocky side of things, "Gathering Moss" for the more floaty psychedelic side of things...
This was wild. I liked it though. Frisbee was my favorite - great riff
Really good!
Great album that I didn't even know about!
Didn’t expect to enjoy it as much as I did
Really fun stuff, a bit of a Rocky open for me, but definitely swung an hit its goal after the fact.
Listens: 2 Enjoyed: yeah Something about this doesn't work as an album for me but many of the songs are great as a stand alone. It's psychedelic rock style is excellent
This was consistant and pretty awesome. Great tunes and creative
Really fun album. I would return to this and enjoy it. 4/5
I feel like this list needs to have some album that only had impact in the UK every now and then to feel natural, except this one actually sounds pretty good? I like how weirdly and defiantly punk it is during Britpop’s hey day, and there are some really cool harmonies here. Would like to hear more. B
Fun Welsh rock band. Cool sound
Really cool. Would like to listen to more
Great album. Trailed off at the end but awesome find.
Very solid effort, Beatles, psychedelia, choruses. All good.
Fun listening with Colin. Definitely deserves another listen!
New to me and really enjoyed their sound, will for sure revisit!
Stacks up well against other contemporary bands. Loved the compostions, not the lyrics as much. But a great album.
Surprisingly fun album, I love the mix of genres
Listened to on 9/4/22 4/5 Favorite song: something 4 the weekend Super upbeat 90s rock but nothing crazy special or standout
Overall an enjoyable album, though some parts were a bit grating through headphones
Fun band. It was a quick and easy listen.
Definitely an album I already had in my library, and reminds me of the mid 90s. Always a good listen.
Never heard of this band but really enjoyed the album. It's easy to detect influences of Bowie, Radiohead, and several others without it feeling derivative.
It's a bit wacky, a bit poppy, a bit retro and a bit futuristic. A solid debut.
Solid album, energetic and fun, love the nods to glam and psychedelic and pop and punk all mixed up
Very nice.
Quite literally it was Something 4 the Weekend!
I like this a lot when it was first released and think it was in my top ten foe year. Revisiting it for this exercise, I find it wears it influences on its sleeves a bit too much. As a result the album comes off as a singles collection with some very good filler. That, in itself, is retro, evoking the 60s. The catchy hooks of the individual tunes, and harmonies push this to a four star review.
I liked this album but not enough to listen again. It sounded a lot like David Bowie and got better with each listen, but I don’t really see what’s special about it. Another British 90s album which could have been cut in favor of a far more relevant Black artist.
this album is all over the place! i do admire when an artist does not confine themselves to any one genre--or two. or three. i liked the range that super furry animals were able to project. it was such a weird listen but an enjoyable one. every song was unique, and somehow the whole album flowed? i wouldn't think this album would work but it does. some songs were absolute bangers ("god! show me magic", "something 4 the weekend") and others were sleepers ("long gone", "bad behaviour") and some weren't as good, but it made for a cohesive listen.
Solid album. I I enjoyed a few songs.
90s mash up of weezer and radiohead
Very solid pop rock album
I love these sort of crazy everything but the kitchen sink albums. One of the best.
Yeah, this was sweet as
Very enjoyable, fun loving criminals but harder?
Great psychedelic pop mixed with britpop. And Gruff Rhys was in that band?! I didn't even know! I will definitely check out their later albums.
That's what I like about indie rock. It's so adventurous and pure. Fuzzy Logic in particular sounds like a pastiche sometimes. I caught stuff from '70s rock to the britpop sounds of the '90s. But it didn't come out as unoriginal nor uninteresting. In fact, it's the most adventurous and fun indie rock album that I heard for a while. It can be messy and all over the place, but it's great rock nonetheless.
Great
Britpop + psychedelia + punk rock? Was this album made specifically for me? Fun and the right amount of stupid. Some songs were a bit forgettable. This band is very much up my alley though, gotta check their other work as well. Shit, they made an entire neo-psychedelic album in Welsh?
Some nice songs here!
Apparently a third of all essential albums are obscure britpop... Pretty good though 4
These guys are tons of fun. I enjoyed the heck out of this!
Liked it a lot. Cool rock/prog rock album, easy listening tunes
Fun et éclectique! Prefs: God! Show Me Magic, Fuzzy Birds, Something for the Weekend, Frisbee, Gathering Moss, Bad Behaviour, Hangin' With Howard Marks, For Now and Ever. Moins pref: Long Gone
What's not to like? Though I prefer Radiator.
omg i'm such a huge fan of this album. I had never heard of this band before, but they are very up my alley.
Great but nothing super special about this.
Rock, grunge.
Liked it! Some catchy recognizable songs on here
For now and ever
Love this from Gruff and the boys, some bangers on here of Course "Something 4 The Weekend" is a Britpop classic and reminds me of that Mid 90's optimism which we could so do with now, what a different world we are living in now! Favorite tracks "Fuzzy Birds" The aforementioned "Something for the Weekend" and "Long Gone". Terrific stuff
Eclectic album that I liked but not much stood out to me. Poppy and likeable.
I liked right away that "hamster" was a lyric in the first two songs. This was fun and Welsh. The subject matter of the songs has to be some of my favorites ever. It's a bit of a crazy mix of styles, but always made me smile.
It seems like these guys make music because it's fun. I like it. Musically at least it's light and poppy --- I didn't have a chance to dig deep into the lyrics so maybe they're talking about serious stuff but I was having a good time. Even Long Gone, which is melancholy, if not outright sad, isn't overly earnest or dramatic, just serious enough. Nice.
The first two songs feature hamsters. The band is called Super Furry Animals. I’m interested… This album has a real 70s vibe that I found quite fun. Some good rock with a lot of interesting bits thrown in. Flute and trombone solo? Check. There are little delights to be found all over this musical funhouse. Really enjoyed it! I love how the ending ends with a “we’ll be together” anthem. A wonderfully corny conclusion that appeals greatly to me! Favorite tracks: God! Show Me Magic, Fuzzy Birds, Something 4 The Weekend, Gathering Moss, For Now and Ever
Very nice SFA album - they made so many, none of them grabbed me completely but this one comes very close (just like Outspaced, their b-side compilation album).
Hei täähän ihan jytää! Harva ysärillä tullut rokkilevy on positiivinen. Ei se turhaan ollu grungen valtakautta. Mut tää kyl on aika hyväntuulista ja tällasta glämärihenkinstä psykevetkutusta. Homma toimii ja pituutta koko laikallakin on 40 min joten eri hyvä. Tulee paljon mieleen 2000-luvun alussa vaikuttanut brittibändi the Darkness. Jatkoon. Hyvä nimi bändillä.
Had some moments that I thought it sounded like Smash Mouth? Overall, a smooth and relaxing vibe.
Aika suoraviivaista rokkia.
I enjoy the Super Furry Animals. I could probably have this on all day long with no problems, and enjoy it all the way though. It's not gonna be one of my top favourite albums as it hasn't really got that oomph that I need to really get it there. Falls somewhere between a 3 and a 4 for me, but as I can really see myself listening to this on repeat and there's not a single song that I dislike I'll give it a 4.
Both relaxed and more intense songs, liked it.
Banging music. I loved Bad Behaviour
So much better than I remember. Lots of killer pop/rock songs that I didn't appreciate as a metal/goth kids in the 90s. My only issue is that it seems to bounce around the place and for me doesn't feel tied together, but still hugely enjoyable.
What’s not to love about these guys? Proper welsh wizardry. It’s certainly not their best album, but it’s still a corker!
Muy buen disco en conjunto 3.5
Really good. Never heard of the band before but I will certainly listen to more.
Very energetic and fun album. I was pleasantly surprised by it.
Never heard of this band before. Nice indie-pop guitar driven rock, liked it a lot even though I could only understand like 60% of the words they were saying
there’s some cool soundscapes? I think I need to improv to this
Not familiar with this band. Enjoyed it. Liked the 90s groove and the “noise”. 4.0
Really enjoyed this one! Very easy listen that seemed to go by too quickly. Guitars were a little heavy and distracting at times but for the most part it was great melodies and composition on an emotional ride through each song without being too heavy or dramatic. Definitely putting this album into the regular rotation.
Fun album. Not very memorable, but solid pop.
Weird welsh indie. BT: Something 4 The Weekend, If You Don't Want Me To Destroy You, Bad Behaviour
guitar driven punky rock. pretty good. dunno if i'd seek this exact album out. after progressing through may return sooner than expected. but I enjoyed it and will probably pop back to sometime, or sprinkle in playlists
I knew about them but never listened to them properly. Surprisingly good. Thinking to give them 3.5 stars (I'll decide tomorrow). I think I really liked it (I hope not to be biased because they are from Cardiff...)
Nice one, like the many- sided styles. Some track very much TGTBaTQ
Something 4 the weekend!
Jamás había oído de este grupo antes
Wow, nothing like getting off to a loud start! It was okay. Didn’t love it, didn’t hate it.
Fun listen
A little bit better than some of the other generic sounding brit pop/rock. The second half of the album contained some actual interesting songs. But it's a generous 3 stars
There are elements of the Super Furry Animals' debut that give it character. The guitars are fuzzy, and there is some zany theatricality that makes it a lot of fun. Despite those things, it mostly sounds like a typical 90s alternative rock album. Later in their career the band would get weirder, but this one - probably because it's their debut - plays it safer. There's a noisy outro on "Bad Behaviour" and a few songs with group vocals, but there's nothing that weird. There's tons of energy, and you're never left waiting for something to happen. But overall the writing isn't strong or interesting enough to elevate it over the band's contemporaries.
Album 1001... and I get the most underwhelming possible album that I could've gotten. I'm not even going to say "arguably" this time. Of the 89 albums I had remaining before today, this is the single most underwhelming album that I could have gotten as album 1001. Like, I was so excited being like "Oh I can't wait to see what I get for album 1001!" and then I get a band that previously gave me a 2/5. Just my luck, am I right? But yeah, we've reached album 1001! This is where I would be done if I was just doing 1 version of the 1001 Albums book, but I'm not, so I still have 88 more days to go after this. I can't believe I've made it this far though. Look, I love this website and I'm so grateful for all of this, but I am ready to be done. I am getting tired of this project for a number of reasons, and unnecessary repeat artists are one of them. Why the hell are there two Super Furry Animals albums on this list? Was one not enough? Did we really need this or was there some bias a-brewin'? As previously mentioned, I gave the other album of theirs, Rings Around the World, a 2/5. I actually re-listened to it a couple of months ago for a sub-project of sorts that I've been working on occasionally throughout this year so far, and I still didn't care for it. But you know what? I actually liked this one more. Fuzzy Logic isn't a bad album. It's not great by any means, but I don't hate it. It's average, which is an improvement from Rings which I felt was below-average. But why do I prefer Fuzzy Logic? I'm not sure. At least, I'm not sure of the full list of reasons. I can try to explain why, I guess. I think this album's energy is a bit more interesting to me personally. The worst moments on here aren't as bad as the worst moments on the other album. The album is 10 minutes shorter. That's probably the biggest reason why I liked this more than Rings Around the World. I still have issues with this album, obviously. The mixing isn't very good and I'm still not huge on the vocals or writing, but this album isn't a bad experience. Dare I say that there were moments that I actually kind of enjoyed somewhat. "God! Show Me Magic" was a decent opener. "Mario Man" is a fun concept. Fuzzy Logic is a fine enough debut album from a band that I still don't really care for. It's not my cup of tea, but I can at least see the appeal of this, you know? Still not a good way to celebrate album 1001, but it could definitely be worse. Light 3/5.
Interesting, chaotic, not unpleasant but I wanted to like it more achos Cymru am byth.
An odd lot, aren't they? Early tracks sound like they could have been used in Welcome to Wrexham. Some call to mind The Beatles.
Fuzzy Logic is filled with a youthful energy that verges on chaos at times. On their debut album, the Welsh band Super Furry Animals combine the prevailing Brit pop sound of the time the fuzzed out energy of punk and classic power pop of the 70s and 80s. The poppy single "God! Show Me Magic" kicks things off energetically. Hit single "Something 4 the Weekend" is reminiscent of Electric Light Orchestra with choppy, rhythmic verses that carreen into a soaring pop chorus. A final standout is "If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You" boasts a different sound with strings and an effective use of falsetto on the chorus.
Fell asleep again but no bad dreams
not bad
6/10
Just straight to the album with God! Show me magic like I thought it was ease me into the album, it really pushed me into it.
mostly enjoyable. the highs are really high but the lows are just as low
This album confirms my suspicion that I clearly don't understand the Britpop phenomenon at all. Far more than the other Super Furry Animals in this collection, I would have guessed this fit neatly into the Britpop category, with its largely retro-pop orientation (and that several of the songs reminded me strongly of Blur and Pulp, especially "God! Show me magic" and "Something 4 the weekend", and maybe "Bad behavior"). Weird too to read that the band thought the album would be an antidote to Britpop's backwards-looking musical vision, since that's pretty much describes *all* of the songs I've heard so far by them. Regardless, although I was skeptical that having another Super Furry Animals in the collection was going to add much, I think I enjoyed this album a bit more than "Rings around the world", and also appreciated it that the few tracks that had videos were at least seemingly connected to the songs.
Interesting but not nearly as good as Rings Around the World or Phantom Power which are terrific albums.
Ehhhh. Ehhhhhhhhhh. Even right after listening, my memory is a little fuzzy, so my logic on rating this album might not be totally sound. It's serviceable, it has more good points than bad, although I know what people mean when they whinge about british albums on this list.
Has a sort of blur sound but a bit more psychedelic, mostly fine but nothing too exceptional here 3.5*
Sorprendió.
When I saw the album title and artist name I thought it was an album from The Muppets - and it actually sounds like it, too... It's very rough, with a lot of elements mixed together and creative ideas, but often it just sounded too chaotic and crowded to me.
Didnt sound like anything special to me. Dont get me wrong, it isnt awfull but it doesnt do mutch diffrent in my opinion. I feel like the rock gerne has been so overexplored over the years that doing anything that isnt basicly an other gerne sounds simular. For the time probably great but kinda just rock now.
I think this is an interesting band. I haven’t listened to them since I got my last album of theirs in Jan 2025, but they’ve grown on me since then.
Enjoyed it.
Meh
Fun ride. But a little all over the place with the genre of the songs. I'm missing a general through line.
I feel like I've heard of these guys, but between them, Supergrass, and Supertramp I'm not sure. Definitely didn't know they were Welsh (and man, do they have some Welsh names!) This was a pleasant listen late Saturday night with a buzz.
Not bad, reminds of Pulp (big fan of Pulp) and Blur, it's going in a good direction you know, some great songs and moments on this, but some lesser tooooo. If you're really dying for more glam-ish sounding britpop, I'd recommend this, clever stuff.
Something 4 the weekend é divertidissima e tá sempre na minha rotation. 3,5+
“Fuzzy logic” is why this album is on this list
Welsh creativity and a certain sense of style - can’t say it’s exactly for me, but I can appreciate it
Great if you're looking for more Psychedelic British rock/ pop. They have a solid sound and I've never heard of the band before. A few of the ending songs lose my interest with the majority of the best stuff in the first half. A couple songs will be saved to highlights.
totally fine alt rock album with 70s/psychedelic influences. i would listen again when in a better mood. sorry but this isn't groundbreaking so 3
i liked it aber auch ns. 3.45 sterne
Me gustó
Taki britpop. Ani ziębi, ani grzeje. Porządne 3
Quite strange. Not really sure what the genre is. Reminds me of lots of different things all at once. Not sure if like.
Un peu trop pop pour moi.
I’m saddened to listen to this and remember that this was indie edgy not mainstream? And now it just sounds mid?
Decent enough, but their music never really stays with me.
Context is important. The first track “God! Show Me The Magic” sounded amazing immediately after the last track on Ray Price’s NIGHT LIFE. (Then again, most anything would.) Pleasant enough, and I definitely have a soft spot for Britpop from this era.
Fuzzy Logic felt like a grab‑bag Britpop trip where a couple tracks really pop and the rest slide into “nah,” so it lands as a “glad I tried it, but yeah…
Theresa a lot of OK mixed with NOT OK in this album, and its mixed together at times.
some fun 90s welsh rock that was so nostalgic.
Fine. Sounded more rocky and more Britpop than I was expecting, having only know Juxtapozed with U by them. Probably a 3+.
This one punched above its weight for sure. Did not expect much going in, but was very entertaining and dynamic. Definitely worth one listen at least.
Creepy cover dude. Not cool. I give up with this shit. Most the albums are not what I must hear. Hey, Alexander, you're a wanker. Go fuck yourself.
Skemmtilegt og smá fjölbreytt.
6/10
Maes B chills. Instantly back to the late 90s. Has worn well. Cymru does Britpop.
🙂
I'm sad that I didn't know about this in the 90s.
A+ for name, eh B- for tunes
Fun enough. Carly relates to the band name
It's fine. It's one of these days were listening to an album in this project feels like a chore, but the record itself has is alright.
Ok but nothing special
i was expecting some weird album about animals, but it's a quite fun and energetic album that happens to have some songs with animal-related lyrics. It was alright
I never took Super Furry Animals seriously. Not in a “I didn't think they were good enough to be taken seriously” kind of way, more that I always thought there was an element of intentional comedy or parody to their music. And some of the resemblances I hear don’t exactly help me shake that impression. On “Frisbee”, it sounds like Adam Buxton has been drafted in to provide his trademark “hoo hoo ha ha”s. “Hometown Unicorn” sounds like Flight of the Conchords doing Bowie. But, much like Buxton or The Conchords, that doesn’t really matter when the songs themselves are this enjoyable. There’s a proper retro 70s vibe running through the album, along with some really catchy melodies and great guitar tones. I don’t think it’s the kind of album that'll stick in my head or that I'll feel compelled to go on about, but it was good craic. Every song is enjoyable, and there’s something very easy and likable about the whole thing. I’m still not fully sure how seriously I’m meant to take it, but I enjoyed it enough that I don’t really care. 3.5 stars
super british 90s pop rock
Overall Rating - 3.21/5 (6.42/10). Solid album. Nothing special, but nothing bad.
Was fine.
A mixture of neo psychedelia, britpop and power pop (among many other styles), and yet, quite forgettable. Starting from the positives, I think this album is quite playful, fun and even shows some ambition thanks to the mix of many styles, making most of the songs feel unique in their own. It also can be sometimes quite catchy, but it isn't their strongest point, as they occasional fall into the very generic melodies of popular British music from that period. Another aspects I really like are the guitar work and distortion. The instruments sounds super noisy and play some occasional good riffs. What they don't really have are good solos. They basically play or experiment with the guitar, making super noisy sounds just for the sake of it and not really contributing to the music. What this album really suffers from is being a product of its time and not aging the best due to, as already said, some melodies being a bit too generic and forgettable. In addition, regardless of pointing out the mixture of genres as a positive thing, they aren't truly crafting something truly impactful or that interesting. Still, I think it is a decent album, and certainly a fun experience even if it isn't super special.
I was surprised this is from 1996, the music feels older not in a bad way just they style. Its an ok album with good mixing and interesting songs. Not something that I will seek up to listen to again though.
First listen (somehow). Bit of a retro Britpop sound, but it’s apeing music I like so that’s ok by me. If you don’t take it too seriously its a decent album. 3
This was fun but it never grabbed me
5.5/10
Well done Britt pop type stuff some weird flourishes make it pretty fun ultimately kind of left me cold though. Sounds are better than the song ideas sometimes.
Catchy, fun. Not immediately memorable. 3
cool
Mostly tolerable. It's kinda weird what passes as "psychedelic."
Favorite Track: Something 4 the Weekend
mid 3.5. Destaques: Hometown Unicorn, Bad Behaviour, Mario Man, Hangin W/ Howard Marks
A new one for me, don't know that I've ever heard one of their songs. A little surprised they didn't get more US radio play in the late 90's. Would have fit okay on standard alt rock radio of the time. There really is an unconscionable quantity of Brit-pop on this list. For me this is just okay, fun enough listen. Nothing on it feels special or groundbreaking, but I like it. A lot of Brit pop is full of highs and lows to me. Oasis for example has some great songs, and many songs that I hate and can't get through. This on the other hand is a consistent B+. By the end I was a bit tired of it even if the songs remained okay. This has to be 3 stars, incredibly middle of the road.
Mid. Had potential it felt like at the start. But mid for me.
Pretty good... reminds me of Fountains of Wayne or something like that. Could be a 4 on a re-listen.
I enjoyed this one more than their other stuff. Still wasn't great though I enjoyed the random Welsh parts in it, and the heavy accent while singing. Was quite funny A very mid album 3 ⭐️
Britpop was just one big party with bands that sounded exactly the same
Not really my style of rock, idk about the rest of the band
A more accessible but more forgettable Flaming Lips
3 - ok album
Very mid all round.
I don't really have an opinion? It was fine. Brit pop with no emotional soul.
This is all fine. Nothing exciting. Probably more background music than anything else, though.
This is far from my favorite psychedelic album, and it’s not in the top 25, but it was pleasant and enjoyable. I think most of the songs are forgettable or at the very least not impactful on my listen. But the moments I liked throughout the album redeemed the album as a whole. The best tracks for me were Mario man, Hometown Unicorn, hanging with Howard marks, and God! Show me magic. I wouldn’t be opposed to listening to this album again in the future but I’m definitely gunna forget most of the tracks.
It was okay. A little funky.
This sounds like standard issue Brit Pop. I struggled to hear anything distinctive beyond the general 90s sound of lots of these bands.
The ~audacity~ of this site to give me my second Super Furry Animals record in the same week - the first being 2001's Rings Around the World. In my opinion, RAtW shows that this band really shines when their songs are a bit longer in length (5-7 mins), whereas most of the songs on Fuzzy Logic are shorter, averaging 2-3 mins, and it feels like they end before reaching their full potential. This album didn't command my attention nearly as strongly (read: hardly at all) as RAtW did. But I get it, it's a debut full-length LP, and still a fine one at that.
Fun, but I didn’t pay super close attention to it.
There’s a good band hiding behind a terrible vocal performance.
Good fun record
The guitars were pretty harsh and noisy but the drums were clear and beautiful. Why? The songs were not offensive, but were not memorable for me either. For example, "Hangin' with Howard Marks" starts great IMO, but goes nowhere. That's how the whole thing felt to me.
God! Show Me Magic Something 4 The Weekend Frisbee Bad Behaviour
6/10
Struggling to remember what this was but I gave it a 3 so I guess it's fine.
5/10 Best songs: Something 4 the Weekend, If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You This is a wildly inconsistent album. Sometimes it's brilliant, sometimes it's barely listenable. This occurs both song to song and also, in some cases, in the same song. I think it works best when it's rockier, dancier, more forceful. When it slows down and the lead singer's frankly weak voice takes center stage it gets pretty awful. But again - one of the songs I find the best musically I also find the worst due to the vocals (If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You).
Some bangers, some a bit too much
It's a pretty generic rock album. Nothing wrong with it per se, but I'm not sure why it's on this list.
Something so obviously influential
Nice
I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. Based on the year, I guessed this might be Britpop, and sure enough, I was right. Like most Britpop, this is very much unobjectionable but there's also not much special about it either. The guitar work and vocals are fine, but there's nothing particularly memorable for me. That being said, I would listen again.
At first I wasn't a fan. I felt like they were trying so hard to be quirky random not like other boys. I gave it another listen and it grew on me a lot. There's a lot going on though and it's a bit all over the place. I think this was their first album which makes sense. Their influences aren't subtle, 'If you don't want me to destroy you' just sounds like a Bowie song. I'm interested to hear their later stuff, this was a really fun first album. My favourite tracks are 'Fuzzy birds' and 'Hometown unicorn'.
Couple of pretty good tracks on it, some brit pop sorta sounded album reminds me of blur a bit.
this literally sounds like music made for commercials aimed at tween boys
Another cool 90s Brit pop British band. I recognise some songs that I've heard unwillingly, like on radio and such. I like 'Long Gone' and maybe 2 others. Again, not my cup of tea but I appreciate it. Once lol.
Kinda cool, kinda all the same. I like a little pop mixed with Psych Rock.
They sounded better than The Beatles.
Songs I saved: Something 4 the weekend Hometown unicorn For now and ever
It was so-so.

Britpop wannabe bowie
Interesting music. Nice harmonies. A good album overall.
not very known which i really like, love the song bad behaviour
What an interesting album especially from guys named "Super Furry Animals." Ive said before I like continuity in albums without being one note. These songs didnt feel like they fit together. Not bad. Not cohesive.
sounds very raucous and uninhibited, which is good to start with but it gets a bit muddy and unfocused as it goes on.
Favorites are probably "hometown unicorn" and "gathering moss" and "mario man". I liked this album, it had a cool groove.
It’s a nice album. I would give it a 3.5 if i could.
Liked this, interesting mix of rock and vague psychedelic elements
This was ok. Average 90’s sound
Rather enjoyed this one!
very good kinks tribute band
hooray for 90s britpop!
Very Blur esque!
Pleasant soft rock with Status Quo underpinnings and a decided lack of direction. 3 stars for consistency throughout.
It's fine!
Never heard of these guys, but they’re fun and very fuzzy. Just straight-ahead rock and roll with a detour here and there. They're out of Cardiff, Wales. Track 1, God! Show Me Magic has a driving Christine Sizteen/Go With the Flow type piano in the mix with the fuzzy guitars. Track 2, Fuzzy Birds, has horns and a flute solo. What is this band? Track 3, Frisbee, has a 90’s alt-rock sound to it. Maybe like the Breeders? I really like this album. It’s fun and probably dumb. Track 5, really hits the psychedelic sound. Very fuzzy guitars and I feel like I’m on drugs while listening to it. This album came out in 1996, so I guess it’s no surprise it sounds like it was made in the 90s. It’s taking me right back there. Track 6, Gathering Moss, just isn’t doing it for me. Not sure what the problem is, but I just couldn’t get into. It was the first slower, more ballad-like, song on the album. Track 7, If You Don’t Want Me To Destroy You, is also a slower jam. However, I am digging it. Oooh, there are some strings in this song. Very 90s, melancholy song. It’s a quieter song despite the title. Weird, it did the old school fade out, but you can plainly hear them end the song before the fade out completes. NEver rellay heard that before. Track 8, Bad Behaviour, and we’re rocking again. This one reminds me of a Cheap Trick jam. Interesting sound for the guitar solo and now there’s a theremin. During the guitar solo, the guitar sound was like a theremin. That’s weird, but I liked it, though as a whole, I hate theremins. They aren’t instruments, they’re just noise makers. Only a select few can make them tolerable. In this song, it wasn’t so bad. Track 9, Mario Man, starts out with some amazing keyboard sounds. Probably, my favorite keyboard sounds in music. Now, the rest of the song comes in around the keys and it’s not great. I’d rather just stay low and slow with the keys throughout the song. Nevermind, the guitar solo is fire. Lots of interesting and fun sounds on this album. Track 10, Hangin’ with Howard Marks, sounds like pure 90s alt-rock. I can see this being a big hit on MTV back in the day. It's got good chunky guitars and great backing vocals. It was not a single, but I think it should have been. Track 11, Long Gone, is another ballad-like song, but it’s not hitting. Though I do love the vocal harmonies throughout the song. Super Furry Animals remind of a mix of Queens of the Stone Age, the Flaming Lips, and Big Elf. Our friends at Wikipedia describe the band as “an inconsistent mix of psychedelic music and glam rock." Nailed it. I’d say it leans heavier into glam rock, though. It seems they made a much bigger impression in the United Kingdom than over here. They're released 9 albums, with the last being in 2009. They're still knocking about apparently and after taking some time off, they're set to tour this year. Several rock mags in the UK thought this album was one of the greatest albums of all time. That’s high praise…..but seems a bit prisoner of the moment. Rod Stanley wrote in the book, 1,001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die, that this album blended "sixties pop, punk rock, and psychedelia, with an underlying Nineties dance sensibility.” I can concur. It sounds like 70s pop glam with a 90s sheen. However, I wouldn’t call it one of the best albums ever created. It’s fun, but it’s not a hear before you die album.
The super furry’s wrote this after spending a weekend at Len Houmous’ weekend lodge in the Cotswolds. They described Len’s ramblings as fuzzy logic. 3.1 9/12 Mario Man
Generic Brit pop
Strong 3, enjoyed! One hit that I sort of recognized but I’m not sure I could tell this album from Adam.
Actually quite good. At some point I forgot that I'm specifically listening to the album and just vibed with it.
Decent album. Didn’t really stick with me
I went through a brief SFA obsession a few years ago listening to their entire discography. I came to a conclusion which music nerds never like to say out loud: “Their best album is the greatest hits” That is a 5 star album every day.
Highlights: God! Show Me Magic, Gathering Moss
Song 8 starts great and then turns into a warcrime
*1996. Welsh rock. *Never heard of these guys, but it's a pleasant album. *Sounds like pretty typical Brit pop influenced by David Bowie, Beatles, etc. Melodic but experimental songs. *Nothing groundbreaking, but an enjoyable listen. RATING - 6.5/10.
Fine. Super fine! Feels like I have lived a lot of life since this album came out.
Weirdest band name so far! Some fun tracks in this one. Middle of the road, 3/5 stars.
This started off promising then quickly faded to background noise. Not bad music though just nothing special
bit weird but not bad 3
its not bad at all it just didn't leave me much of an impression and i don't think i'll ever revisit it
For the 90s/00s UK curse of this list, these guys aren't so bad. Decent sound, well done for a debut. Probably not on the list but there is worse.
When you are over 800 in, compared to other stuff from this time and place, this is fine. Would be nice if it was 10 minutes shorter.
I listened to Super Furry Animals once last year. Apparently, they are an indie rock band that played a central role in the renaissance of Welsh culture in the 1990s. Fuzzy Logic was their debut record, and it's an intriguing one, to say the least. The simplest description I can provide for this album is that it's like an early glam rock record filtered through a neo-psychedelia lens. Early David Bowie and Elvis Costello came to mind during my listen, as Gruff Rhys sang rather eccentrically in his thick accent over the microphone, as the band bounced and grooved with the Hammond organ lead and distorted guitar riffs. In fact, the opening run from "God! Show Me Magic" through "Hometown Unicorn" was some of the most fun I had with this unintentional harkening back to an earlier period of music. Then "Gathering Moss" came on with the light, airy guitar strumming, and the momentum was lost on me. In the second half of the album, the band opted for light-hearted, slowed-down orchestral tunes that rarely captured the energy of the first half, outside of the more standard "Bad Behaviour" and the infectious guitar line on "Hangin' with Howard Marks". Even the fuzzed-out waltz of "For Now and Ever" wasn't quite enough to win me over at the end. Between the lost momentum and the inconsistent mix throughout this record, there just wasn't much to keep me fully engaged for the full 42 minutes of runtime. I still had an okay time with Fuzzy Logic. It's certainly a debut record for a band that was still likely trying to find its own identity while paying tribute to its musical influences. It was fine for a listen. Cherry-pick your favorites and go from there.
Listening session: january 11th, while getting ready in the morning Listened to before: no Thoughts: some songs on this album reminded me a bit of Supergrass Favourite track: Frisbee & Hangin’ with Howard Marks
More BritPop and for me, these guys were among the also rans of the era. Some good tunes here, but it's so heavily influenced by Blur that some tracks here sound like outtakes from The Great Escape. Enjoyable but nonessential
Not at all what I expected. Started so fast and intense but then has some kind of psychedelic parts and some humour with the lyrics.. a very new band to me but I can see myself listening to certain songs again!
Feels similar to a 90s movie coming of age soundtrack
Wasn't bad, wasn't great, was perfectly fine to listen to.
I like the chorus in the first song, but the background falsetto voice in the verses is really throwing me. I kinda like how experimental it sounds. There's some different unique thing in every song that makes me question why tf they added it in there. Like the monkey sounds in Frisbee cracked me up. And why the hell is there 2 minutes of outro in Long Gone. Most of the songs arent quite up there yet for me to add them, but the guitarist is phenomenal. And the violinist on Long Gone. Saved: God! Show Me Magic, Something 4 the Weekend, Hometown Unicorn, If You Dont Want Me To Destroy You, Long Gone
I mean it was alright I'm just not going to listen to a band called Super Furry Animals on my day to day life
I'm a bit surprised that this is on the list. It's pleasant and I like it but it doesn't seem like it belongs. Having said that, I've heard much worse.
Grungy and kinda fun, not particularly noteworthy.
This is perfectly good / fine music. Just not sure why or how they have two albums on this list. Nothing about it jumps out as special. Just good 90s music.
Not sure how these guys have multiple albums on the list. Ok but nothing groundbreaking.
Fun times. Not amazing but a good old fun time. Worth listening to. Xmas is a time to not think too much about this stuff. Not enough time. Maybe it gets a better look at another time of the year bit this is what I got
"if you don't want me to destroy you" and "long gone" push it to a 3 for me, besides that alright, but not that interesting.
I really liked this. I would say 3.5
I mean it's kinda fun right? Like I'm not sure I'll listen again, but I found myself walking like Leo Decap in that one meme in the majority of these songs
Correcto
There’s some catchy songs on this but overall it was a miss for me
Can anyone explain how the vocalist on Superfast Jellyfish isn't Damon?".
I particularly enjoyed the energy and 70's glam vibes of the opener and that bang almost goes straight into the chorus. Rest of album maintains the energy and mixes the styles and is a fun listen. But after 3 listens nothing has really stuck with me and it feels a bit disposable.
Fascinating to see this band had 18 top 40 hits in the UK. Sadly, I didn't really hear much in the way of hits here. But if I ever get into a romantic relationship with a Gen X British indie rocker type, this list is making me feel well-prepared.
Never really got into the SFA, but this is a good solid album without being standout
Yeah, it was fine.
Sounds like a not-very-good Bowie knockoff album. I would give it a high 2. I rounded up because it’s almost Christmas.
Pretty nice.
i liked it, but nothing memorable i don't think. 3.5/5 rounded down
Like
Pleasantly average Brit pop
Not bad
Better than I was expecting but nothing overwhelmingly great. I sometimes wish I could go back to albums and listen when they were first introduced. I could see an album like this being super different at the time, but now I feel like it is similar to a lot of other alt rock.
Pleasantly surprised! On first listen, SFA sound like a cross between Blur and Spacehog. I definitely hear David Bowies influence on this mid-90’s alt rock as well. Nothing groundbreaking going on here though.
Kind of a hit or miss album. I liked the more heavy and energetic songs here, especially the opening track, but not all of the are like that. There’s nothing special here, but overall, still a pretty enjoyable album. 7/10
Some too Mellow but some tracks punched through. Lyrics weren't all pretty, rhymey poetry but catchy. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Gathering Moss, Something 4 the Weekend, If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You, Hometown Unicorn ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it. Saved some tracks
Many of the songs were too mellow for me and the vocals did unfortunately remind me of Elvis Costello, but there were a few good tracks. I like the glam rock vibes. Listened before? N Saved to library? N Favorite track(s): Something 4 The Weekend, Bad Behaviour, Hangin' with Howard Marks ⭐⭐⭐: Liked it. Saved some tracks.
Meh
Respect to LZ. This one's isn't a fave for me
Jacuzzis and three meals a day were the reason to go to the studio. Ok.
groooovy record with amazing guitar play. definitely decent, although at some point halfway through the album i got disengaged. i think it's because of the main vocalist. while not being bad at all, at one point his voice becomes irritating 😭. i especially felt this during "gathering moss." but it is groovy, and if you like pop rock, a good album to save individual hits from.
'Show me magic'; 'You're the battery incarnate, I'm an innocent man'; 'You know we're drowning in designer ice cream.' Guitar-wise, this feels like My Bloody Valentine, while lyrically it has the mundane absurdism of bands like The Flaming Lips or Animal Collective. I guess that adds up to a 'logic' that we can baptize as 'fuzzy,' but I'd opt for a word like 'faint' or 'weak': it's not ambiguous as much as it's slight, lacking a substantiality that justifies their posture of cool. B/c that's the central problem of the record as I see it. It has decent tracks like 'Frisbee,' 'Gathering Moss, or 'Bad Behavior, songs that nicely recall 60s pop, but there's something in Gruff Rhys's voice and the overall tenor of the album that reeks of an unjustified, restless hipness.
This isn't a bad album by any stretch - it goes out of its' way to be more than just a guitar rock album. There are some interesting synths and samples, but it still all feels a bit flat. I enjoyed it, but I wouldn't come back to it - maybe because it's largely a fairly archetypal Britpop album which just isn't my vibe
Interesting. I wasn't super in tune during this listen, but having never heard them before, I liked what I heard and would definitely check out more of their stuff to get a better sense of what they are.
Not bad at all, but idk if interesting? Hard call. Worth listening to in the background. At times it feels like it goes much faster than it has the ground to stand on.
Better than expected. Particularly like Bad Behaviour.
2.5 tbh, not bad just impartial
Fun fact, this is not blur. You learn something new every day not sure why it doesn’t click with me. Super Poppy has all the right parts. I listen to the album twice just to see if it would click the second time zero clicks not a bad band. Definitely see why people love them something about them just not click kitty clack in here.
#171/1001. Not much to rant about this album. It wasn't good, it wasn't bad.
Quirky band who never quite managed to hit the heights they deserved to because of a certain phenomenon called Britpop. Some lovely slices of pop tunery here, including Hometown Unicorn and If You Don't Want Me to Destroy You, all bundled up in one lovely package. Well worth your time (I know this probably reads like a 4, but it's just shy of that for me, somewhere in the 70-75% range)
I really liked Bad Behaviour, God Show me Magic and Long Gone. The rest of the album was nothing special to go home about. That’s why I’m giving it a 3/5
They definitely have their own sound, but it just fits awkwardly between a lot of other mediocre British acts
There were some hits and misses in this record. It has a mixture of catchy and weird tracks. Favourite Track(s): Something 4 the Weekend, If You Don't Want Me To Destroy You, Hangin' With Howard Marks Least Favourite Track(s): Mario Man
3 out of 5. Better than the string of country music I just had. Never heard this group before and I'm digging it.
Quite enjoyed. Would definitely listen to something 4 the weekend again, really u my street. Found gathering moss really difficult to listen to but other than that a very enjoyable and different indie album.
Couldn't get excited by this - it just felt like noise. It should be my sort of thing but isn't. I feel you might as well listen to the Stereophonics instead - they are this but better.
Just a bit boring. Not necessarily bad but...
