I know this album very well I remember one of my friends playing it all the time not my kind of music but definitely tell him to the artist and awesome debut album

Great music across the board. Some sounds like Hendrix, some sounds like the Beatles. Music style changes. Vocal style changes.

Big like

10/10 ayo new favorite album just dropped

Wow, awesome. Did not expect to like this at all.

I loved it 30 years ago and is still great

real hard

This is a phenomenal album! I remember the first Lenny Kravitz song I ever heard (American Woman, off of Big Shiny Tunes 4). I thought it was a fantastic song, and really liked his style, but never really delved into his back catalog at all. I found myself enjoying that same sound on this album (rock mixed with strong funk/jazz/blues vibes). This album touches on topics such as peace & love, racism, and religion. The piano breakdown in My Precious Love was fantastic!! Favourite songs : Let Love Rule, Rosemary, Blues For Sister Someone, I Build This Garden for Us, Flower Child Least favourite songs: if forced to pick, Mr. Cab Driver, Freedom Train, Sitting on Top of the World 5/5

Hadn't listened to this since a long time and was reminded what a great album it is. A warm bath!

First time listening to the full album by Lenny Kravitz and my first thought is - Why haven't I done this sooner? It's a very well made album, entertaining from start to finish (although it falls off a little by the end). Mix of rock, at moments hard rock, with blues and soul, resulting in extremely fun record for a wide variety of fans. Lenny was the solo artist on this album - vocals and lyrics, guitars, bass, drums and other instruments were composed and played by him. And you can tell how talented he is. It wasn't over the top at any point, which happens to some other overcomplicated recordings, but also it wasn't too simple, it hit the right mark. Guitar solos felt really at place and in the groove of the song or beat. Additional instruments like sax or trumpet added another layer to the mixture. And finally, it wouldn't be as attractive without great singing voice of Lenny. He could swing in-between slower, more emotional tracks and fast and heavy ones with ease, and you could tell he felt good and comfortable in any setting. I am very surprised with this album, but it easily jumps to the list of my favourites.

From the outset this was a really enjoyable collection of songs with shades of hippie rock, psychedelia, soul and funk. Kravitz is quite obviously a massive fan of late sixties psychedelic rock and this is apparent in the music styles and especially his lyrics; whilst cliched they never jar. He sings enthusiastically throughout and the music has plenty of breathing space. There's a few nice touches like the processed vocal effect on 'Freedom Train' and strings on 'Fear'. Great stuff.

Still love it.

I had honestly only ever listened to fly away before this but this was a great intro into Lenny kravitz. Excellent album and his yelly voice with the production just works

Super-groovy and awesome.

Great groove, I should listen to more Kravitz

I love people like Lenny who sing with such passion. It really gets you into the album and music and lyrics and theme. Phenomenal record.

So good

Loved this! The instrumentals and tone are great. A mix of relaxing and energizing.

Absolutely incredible.

no co mam powiedzieć no zajebiste, każdy utwór bez wyjatku, najbardziej chyba be, empty hands i blues for sister someone

Amazing. Just amazing.

Lenny at his best.

This is a good album. Didn’t know Lenny got God.

Enjoyed the variety and overall song style.

Not his best but he still is good and he gets an extra star for this being his only album on her

This was better than I thought it would be. Personally I feel like his albums tend to drop off on the second half but this did not imo. Lyrically I felt like it was more put together and solid than some of his later stuff. Really liked the variety and storytelling. Sad this is his only album on this list.

It’s a solid listen. Appreciate the thought in his lyrics & that it’s basically a 1 man show. Don’t feel like he’s really developed his sound tho & do not feel it’s his best work. Couple other of his are overall stronger albums

Enjoyed this more than I expected, no specific takeaways, but it was definitely a fun listen. I'd say not quite a 4, but 3.5-3.75 territory?

Liked more than expected.

I forgot how good this album is. He didn’t become too full of himself yet on this album. Flower child is such a cool, unpretentious song.

I'll give it an extra star, sure. I quite like Lenny, albeit not his singing, but the music is fun and never boring.

Would give 4.5 if an option. Great album.

Nice guitar

TBH this was better than I thought it was gonna be. Just a good straight ahead rock album. Some low points in that he probably could’ve cut a song or 2 but overall I get the appeal.

Speaking the truth, great lovey doves album🙏

Great album.

One of my first albums and concerts. The fact that this album was a one man show was inspirational. Sure, he was part of that 60s revival nonsense in the 90s, but for me he gets a pass on sheer enthusiasm alone.

I’ve never intentionally listened to Lenny Kravitz. I accidentally listened to the 20th anniversary of the album so we had hours of this album yesterday. It was great Saturday background music to play.

soulful rock with a gravelly voice. yes.

Hard to believe Lenny had already formed his sound back in the late 80s. Bluesy rock features here, with highlights being the title track, Mr Cab Driver and Flower Child. Recommended

Really liked this album when it came out. I think it’s his best album by a country mile. I felt his albums and songs that followed this in the 90’s were too deliberately similar to other classic bands and songs, as if they sat around and said “let’s do one that sounds like x song from John Lennon/Plastic Band,” or “y song from Jimi Hendrix.” Seems to me he found his own sound in the 00’s. Anyway, this album to me has a Sly & The Family Stone vibe but with more of a rock approach. Really appreciated this album listening to it after all these years.

An enjoyable introduction to Lenny’s music. It feels like his sound isn’t fully formed here, but I was certainly fond of what he was going for. The instrumentation and vocal inflections are engaging throughout, creating plenty of fun moments, even if some tracks drag a bit. 1 listen Favorite Track: Title Track

I liked this a lot more than I thought I would. I need to listen to more Lenny

Lenny rocks, he souls, he funks, and he even rips off the Beatles much better than most. Is there anything this guy can't do musically? I might not love it all, but it's a pretty solid album and always a good listen.

Very strong debut album by a great musician.

Glad to see everyone hating on Lenny lol. Never could stand his persona, his derivativeness and his overproduction. That being said, I can't deny most of the songs here are pretty good. It's a shameless and commercial impression of timeless artists, yes, but that's exactly why it's hard to fuck it up. If not for the lingering feeling that what I was listening to was plagiarizing songs I love (most of which I could actually pinpoint and compare), I might've even given this a 5. That and the pathetic Christian bullshit in the lyrics (granted some of those were written by his wife).

Very good

Every track is great. What a voice.

A really fun soundscape the whole way through

yeah i liked that one.

How old are you? I am "I mainly know of Lenny Kravitz from his starring turn in the hit 2012 dysopian film franchise The Hunger Games" years old. Like, I did know he was famous for making music, but I'd be hard pressed to recall every knowingly listening to a second of it. And you know what, this is good fun! I now understand why he is mainly known not for being Lenny Kravitz as Cinna but for being Lenny Kravitz as Lenny Kravitz. And I like it.

I love much of this album. The last three not so much. 3.5.

I have always liked this record, it’s super derivative - to the point that it almost sounds like a tribute to the 70s, but the songs are good and the performances feel live and energetic

People should like this album more i think. I loved it then and I love it now

Moody. Broody Baby Lenny. Bloody lovely album from this talent. I did not know he was similar to Prince, playing all the things. ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Impressive for a debut album he mostly did himself. I could do without all the religious stuff, but the grooves were good.

The musicality of this album is off the charts. Grooves and hooks that you cannot deny. Lyrically a bit silly at times but the vocals are on point.

The musicianship is top-notch. Great vocals and guitar and all that. What stops it from getting a fine is Lenny’s hilariously ridiculous lyrics. My buddy quite astutely said Lenny needed himself a Bernie Taupin. I can’t really argue with that.

i enjoyed this one a lot mostly on virtue of its just being fairly straightforward and listenable, surely not high art but not without its merits

Was not expecting this to be as good as it was. Really comfy pop rock, I've always loved this kind of sound so it's a no-brainer I like this one too.

Really good album, could have used better production as it sounds very muted.

Without being an achievement in the history of music, it has the kind of positive vibes I want in my life. 7/10

not getting the hate. everyones calling this a poor mans prince, but i love prince so more for me i guess. i kind of start off hating every song, but they evolve into something really good near the end. there's so some really cool grooves on here. lenny's performance is def a little forced and over the top but i don't mind. i think its cool, especially freedom train, love the glitched out electric guitars sounds super cool and ahead of its time.

It's a very strong debut album for Lenny Kravitz, and it's overall a great listening experience. It's got elements of soul and blues and old school rock that blend well together. Wikipedia labels this as psychedelic rock but I didn't totally get that impression aside from some Hendrix-esque riffs. I do think a few songs go on a bit too long, maybe that's a psych rock element.

Great debut album!

Rock and soul and bit of gospel thrown in occasionally. A couple of tracks written by or co-written with Lisa Bonet (The Cosby Show’s Denise), the rest of the album is a one-man show with Kravitz playing all the instruments himself. I think he could have benefitted from others in the studio to bounce ideas off - his lyrics can be poor, and by the end of the album it sounds like he’s run out of musical ideas to keep the album fresh. Having said all that, this album has a groove to it and I like it!

I was having Thbad day, but this album made it better. "Let Love Rule" subverted my expectations. It proved that Lenny Kravitz was worth listening to. I used to confuse him with Lemmy from Motorhead. The songs "Be" and "I Built This Garden for Us" remind me of Pink Floyd's "DSotM". 4 stars for "Let Love Rule".

First song is pretty meh. And then you go straight into let love rule, banger from the first note. It’s crazy how there’s so much more confidence exuded in Let Love Rule versus the first song on the album, which feels real shaky. Idk how else to explain it, you can hear they didn’t have the same confidence/drive behind the first song. Fear was the next noticeably good song on the album. Mr. Cab Driver is still on my rotation. What a good song, and interesting how the racism and situation has flipped. The chances of getting a white cab driver now a days is rare lol. Oooo I haven’t heard Be before. I like it. Fits the vibe. The doubled/harmonized vocals sound real good. As the song goes I’m pretty sure they’re two separate vocal takes cause they change slightly here and there. That’s pretty cool.

Really good

To me, this album is aspirational rather than autobiographical. He's a guy from a privileged background but he's saying this is where he'd like to go, and he seems earnest. Plus, tons of talent playing most of the instruments. I prefer this to cynicism.

Bonne petite écoute !

i had a great time it was some nice generic rock but not generic in a bad way

first listen. pleasantly surprised. some good sounds and lyrics....will listen to it again

This was solid. Will probably be back to try it again in the future.

Some really excellent moments but as with most things, a bit of an edit would have helped. A strong debut with occasional ragged sounding vocals but undeniable talent and foreshadowing of more great things to come

It's actually interesting to listen to given its release year. Not a lot of people were taking a fresh look at what was then called classic rock. At a time when music was becoming more corporate and mechanical, Kravitz made a genuinely soulful and interesting record in Let Love Rule.

Exceedingly pleasant. Though I doubt I’d listen again out of choice in future. So it’s a strong 3-bagger, but I’m gonna give Lenny an extra bag since he played all the instruments and self-produced it

Enough stand out tracks for a 4

myyyy precious love

This was so fun! I need to listen again.

I performed a version of 'Fly Away' by Lenny Kravitz when I was 11 in a school talent quest. I had no idea who he was, but the song was vaguely catchy, and the band (2 guys pretending to play ukuleles and 1 guy shaking an egg shaker) decided it was good enough. I even bought the single to sing over. When we ended the song, we lined up together and shouted out a wrestling line. Yep, we didn't win. The album began with an acoustic and then on came the groove. I actually really enjoyed the first two songs. Then it got all funky. He knows how to write a chorus and how to address some pretty meaty issues. There was also a Velvet Underground influence. The taxi driver song was a good example of this. However, while I enjoyed it, I wasn't entirely enthralled by the album. A little too much a product of the time. And it wasn't my time. 4 stars. We are the nation, the proclamation... I think we said.

Really great for a debut album, especially considering it’s basically a one-man-show. Funky blend of genres and I could see myself revisiting for sure.

I actually think there's room for this one to grow on me. It's got a really cool DIY, organic feel that reminds me a bit of McCartney's first album. I imagine that a lot of people probably do prefer Lenny's later stuff that's a bit more polished, but as someone who's never been a huge fan of his lusher, more R&B-inspired efforts, I dig the homespun atmosphere quite a bit. The Beatles, Hendrix, and Prince influences are *very* clear, but they never feel like cheap imitations either. I'm interested to keep returning to this one. 3.5/5

I definitely listened to pre-big scarf Lenny Kravitz a lot in 1989, and somehow that horn honk in Mr. Cab Driver didn't sound so ridiculous back then. Anyway, the grooves still groove. And the strings in Empty Hands? Totally forgot about those.

While it’s not without flaws—**lyrical naivety and occasional pacing issues**—its **musical richness, emotional honesty, and retro-futuristic production** make it a **standout debut** and a **must-listen** for fans of rock, soul, and psychedelia. – A flawed but **deeply influential and heartfelt** album that still resonates today.

Listened to this one a lot when it first came out. At the moment, it seemed like a totally fresh take on Psychedelic Rock/Soul. It was also fun to get stoned to. After Krazitz became a global superstar, the freshness went away and we were left with sexy, yet toothless, Dad Rock. I think we realized that no matter how fashionably cool Kravitz was, Jimi Hendrix and Prince would always make him look and sound like a wannabe.

Love Lenny.

For a moment, I thought of Lenny as a Prince wannabe, but in all fairness, any rock, pop, R&B, or whatever multi instrumentalist who doesn’t emulate Prince a little bit maybe isn’t reaching high enough. So, good album. Not fantastic, it worth listening to a good bit of it again.

More Christian than expected

Love this albums though it does have some misses on it. It’s album with a little bit of rock, funk, and soul. Can’t wait to listen again

A much better album than I expected. I'm going with 4 as I high rating. Sound and feel were excellent, especially the title track.

Baby Lenny Kravitz <3 It’s a bit grating at times, he strains his voice a lot. Does anybody know how many lives we‘ve lost is a tune. Mr Cab Driver is interesting, too. Flower child is groovy. I prefer the second part of the album.

Weirdly reminded me of Mike Viola! Got a little religious in the second half that turned me off a bit I fear… but this rocked! The harmonies and the songs were awesome. Feels like it fits in with 90s alt rock more than the disco/funk I was expecting

Sexxxxxyyy. Synthy-organ-bass whatever - melt.

Waiiiit this is a good ass album?! I have heard his older stuff (my mom is a Lenny Kravitz fangirl) but never this album. I love how it starts a little unpolished and goes through so many different states and emotions. Soooo good

Pretty solid rock, good emotion. Enjoyed.

Pretty funky

A verry 'Jazzy' Rock mixture in Lenny's style. If you like Lenny and his style - you'll get it.

His debut album isn't my favourite, but it's decent... 4 stars

I like the bass that Kravitz uses it slightly declined towards the end but overall enjoyed this album.

A very good first effort. The following albums were even better, but this one also ticks all the right boxes. 4/5

Great debut album. Sounded familiar while be original. The guy has been iconic for almost 40 years.

Retro Lenny! Still, good stuff. Well done.

I wanted to like this alot more than I did. Don't get me wrong, it's very good, but I guess I was expecting a little more? Loved "Let Love Rule" the song, though. 7/10

Fairly shocked that this is Lenny Kravitz's first album. His sound seems fully formed at this point and largely no boring tracks in the whole thing. Really really impressive entry and I had a lot of fun listening to it. Special shout-out to Mr. Cab Driver. That song rocks.

This is probably an album that music nerds wouldn't care for, but I enjoyed the hell outta it for some reason. I would make for a terrible music critic, but that doesn't worry me.

Lenny is pretty cool. He definitely leans heavily into his inspirations, which is a plus and a minus. It gives his music a solid background of musical history, but then it doesn't usually feel too original. I guess the list guy chose this album because its the debut that brought Lenny to the world, but Mama Said and Are You Gonna Go My Way seem to be better all-around albums to me. I think it's because there are more musicians bringing their parts to life. (And you have to give him some credit for playing everything here.) Did you notice how for each and every song Lenny pretty much sings the title over and over? Some have many more lyrics, but they all do share this one thing. Not that it's a wrong thing to do, just weird. (To an annoying extent on "I bult this garden for us.") I'm sure I've listened to this album more than a couple of times in the past, but usually prefer the next two and have listened to those more. But I'd say this is a worthwhile listen. I want to give 3.75 stars. Guess it's getting a 4

Rockstar for sure

Fine album, worth listening to once in a while

Favourites: Let Love Rule, I Build This Garden For Us, Fear, Rosemary, Blues For Sister Someone, Flower Child

Lenny Kravitz is simply a cool guy and an incredibly talented musician. This was already evident on his debut album “Let Love Rule,” which is really worth listening to. I find it remarkable that the songs are so different that I don't really want to single out any one of them. On the other hand, Lenny manages to convey each of the 13 different moods convincingly and fill them with his personality. It makes sense that he was compared to Prince early on—even though I see him more as a successor to Jimi Hendrix in terms of style. Strong debut!

Lenny nunca falla. 7/10

Groovy

Très sympa

Genuinely solid. Not an everyday listen for me, but Lenny sings sweetly

Raw Lenny Kravitz...cool album. Almost blues-like and I would listen to it again.

Great album

this album is a ton of funk - mix between real sensual RnB, funk, soul, and energetic feel throughout that simultaneously challenges the listener with lyrics that challenge interpersonal relationships that spawn racism and sexism.

Groovy and kinda sexy album. Not actually what I expected from Lenny Kravitz, might need to check out the rest of the discography now as I was unfamiliar with his game.

nice stuff

Good Album ... even better fashion designer. Did you see how the dress looked like it was on fire? The other one turned into a Mocking Jay! I wonder what happened to him after the Quarter Quell?

Lenny!

Maybe I just don't understand the dislike for this album. I found it really enjoyable. Clearly influenced by the music that was around at the time and music from eras past. Lenny does it really well on this debut. I was really surprised to find that he played the majority of the instruments on this album. It sounds good, front to back, flows together nicely, and has a nice variety.

First time listen. And I was blown away.

Favorite Track: I Built This Garden For Us

I was surprised to see so many negative reviews for this album. I liked it. A little slow / samey at some points, but it was soft and smooth and I’m a sucker for debut album.

I was never big on Lenny, but after listening to this I need to give him a second listen.

It sounded a little flat at first but it got better so it's a four.

An interesting combination of funk/soul and rock. Probably just my bias talking, but I feel like it would have been better at times to lean more into the rock side.

A good rock album

Low budget Jimi Hendrix meets Anderson .Paak

kinda funky at points, kinda classic rock-y at points. a little sly and the family stone, a little beatles. does it feel kind of like a knock-off of prince at points? yeah, kinda. does that make it a bad album? no, not really. it's pretty enjoyable and there are some fun moments on here. still, there's nothing that totally blew me away - the best thing here is probably the title track and, although good, nothing particularly mind blowing. still, it was a fun listen.

Mä oon varmaan kuunnellut liian vähän Kravitzia. Tämähän nimittäin toimii. Päivitettyä Hendrixiä ja paljon monimuotoisuutta! 4/5

This is a good time. Not as good, in my opinion, as some of his later work, and it leans a bit to heavily on religiosity and hippie aesthetic, but Lenny is so cool he just about makes it work. 3.5 album if we had half stars, but I'll bump it to 4 stars because I'm a Lenny Kravitz fan, even if this isn't my favorite album.

It feels like Lenny Kravitz should've been bigger. Maybe it's because I really only know him from his cover of "American Woman," or maybe it's because his peak seems like it was when I was younger than ten. I don't know. But it feels like he should've been bigger. Maybe he was. Anyway. This was a fun album. The production feels ahead of its time, honestly. For being of the late 80's, it shook all the familiar trappings of the rock production listeners had become used to - lots and lots of reverb, synths, and an attitude that meant taking yourself too seriously. None of that is here, and I am 100% here for it. This feels like a party, and that Kravitz wants the listener there. There's some hard rocking dance music, some slow jams that last for five or more minutes, and some loud horns that (at least for me) really tie some of the songs together. It isn't all great, but man is it a fun listen. It's soulful, it's rocking, it's spiritual, it's funky, it's immediate, and visceral. And I really, really enjoyed listening to this. And I can absolutely seen why it's on this list. What an album. Four stars. Standout Tracks: Sitting on Top of the World, Let Love Rule, Does Anybody Out There Even Care, Mr. Cab Driver, Blues for Sister Someone, Flower Child

4 stars

Mamma Said was a great album before I understood it was enthusiast music. The reason it worked was Lenny. Let Love Rule is more authentic, not everything was produced to be airwave ready and that's what sets this apart from most all of his other music.

Slow and quiet is not where his voice shines so the beginnings of some tracks were a little rough as a result. But he quickly hits his stride and the middle of the album has a great, funk bass driven backdrop to his rock screams.

I'm not sure if I've ever listened to this whole album, and it's definitely an oversight. I may have when I was a teenager and been annoyed that every song wasn't a full on hard rock riff song like Mr. Cab Driver or Are you Gonna Go My Way. Anyway, now that I'm over that, this stuff definitely holds up on a lot of levels. Lots of good soul tracks--even the slow stuff is well done and not too weepy. Mr. Cab Driver is still a rocking song, among Kravitz's best.

> the Beatles Was previously unaware of this album. It's great

Although it's not my favorite Lenny album, it was an impressive debut and cemented his style...seamless blend of rock, funk, soul. And that voice..... P.S. Just have to add that he's even hotter now than he was then, which is a feat unto itself.

Ebenfalls prägnant ist „I Build This Garden for Us“, das Kravitz’ Hang zu spirituellen und idealistischen Themen widerspiegelt. Das Album markiert den Beginn einer Laufbahn, die stark von stilistischer Vielseitigkeit und Retro-Einflüssen geprägt ist. Es vermittelt einen persönlichen Zugang zum musikalischen Selbstverständnis des Künstlers und gibt erste Hinweise auf spätere Entwicklungen in seinem Werk.

I’ve had a love affair with this album and Lenny since its release. It’s still relevant and always creates a positive chill vibe. His friendship with Prince was really sweet and their work together showcases his immense talent.

Gewoon erg lekker. 4 sterren.

Lenny at his prime

I didn't truly "forget" Lenny Kravitz from his heyday, but I have neglected to listen too much to his music in general. Not for lack of interest or care, but out of the abundant choices and distractions of so much music being out there. But revisiting this album made me really happy. He is really fun and easy to listen to. No "it gets boring" here! I might dare say that Lenny Kravitz kind of "kicks ass" in a way. If you want something fun for a party playlist, it will not hurt to add this to the mix.

Surprisingly interesting. Somewhere between Prince and Mooney Suzuki, or Elliot Smith even.

Pretty good music. Love the funk, and it sounds different.

Decent.

Heartfelt and vibey. The influences are obvious, but they make it stronger, not weaker. Some corny lyrics, but Lenny’s effortlessly cool and the groove never quits.

Bought this when it was first released. Great title track, not a poor song in the album.

I think my expectations were a little high here; I only know his most famous songs and his rock/style god status and so was expecting to be blown away. However, what I got was a very nice album with clear Prince and Lennon influences...that if my expectations weren't so high, I would be waxing lyrical about. My bad, but only 4 stars from me today.

Pretty good album! Not my fav, but a good vibe.

-yeah i liked this album! -my fav song was probs let love rule

Great Kravitz

Not too bad

Liked this alot when it came out...don't listen to it much anymore

Was unfamiliar with Lenny's work outside of 1 or 2 hits, but the versatility and energy is soooo impressive. Part of it sounds like Prince. Some parts very grunge-y. The guitar parts are so cool and it flows effortlessly. Really enjoyed it. Actual is a 3.5 Liked Songs: "Sitting On Top Of The World" , "Let Love Rule" , "I Build This Garden For Us" , "Fear" , "Does Anybody Out There Even Care" , "Rosemary" , "Flower Child"

liked songs: Sitting On Top Of The World, Fear, Be This was pretty good! I'm impressed that Lenny Kravitz played like 95% of the instruments on this album himself. It's very strong for a debut. 3.5

Liked it and parts of it reminded me of Prince.

Psychedelic Rock / Soul. I liked it.

Goeie artiest. 4,3

This one was very enjoyable. While I enjoyed Kravitz’s work prior to listening to this album, I had not really taken a deeper dive into his discography so it was pretty interesting to listen to his debut. There are some really funky basslines strewn throughout it that liven the mood even when Kravitz sings about serious topics.

I listened to a podcast a while ago that compared Lenny Kravitz to Bruno Mars in that it’s hard to distinguish an actual sound that defines either artist. I agree for the former, but not for the latter. Funk-inspired rock, not an imitation. Kravtiz’s songwriting strength is definitely in the music, not the lyrics. Still, the music is so good, I find myself not really caring too much what the lyrics are about. Let love rule? Sure! Why the hell not!

Neither black, nor white...

Very strong start got a bit weaker on the second side for me but still good

Lenny Kravitz is one of those names I have always been familiar with, but have never listened to. Psychedelic and bluesy for sure. Lands somewhere in the 3.5 range for me, but we're gonna keep this heater train rolling with another 4.

Excellent debut album. Wide ranging songs. Missing the banger you’d get from later albums, but more of the classic hippy rock that made me love him from the start.

merry kravitzmas i guess

Really nice album which is consistent in both tone and quality without becoming repetitive. Kravitz's singing was very passionate and impressive. Favorites: I Build This Garden For Us, Let Love Rule, Freedom Train

Lenny!

Never heard any Lenny outside of Fly Away and American Women (shoutout to What Makes This Song Stink on Youtube for the Kravitz bowl), and I'm pleased to say I liked his debut a ton. Let Love Rule is an awesome song with two greatsax parts and a ton of 60s influence, while sounding notably more modern than it. It's probably the best tune here. But I also liked I Built This Garden For Us a lot, too. Surprised at how much religious stuff there was in here, though.

Better than what i was expecting. The best songs on here are Sitting On Top Of The World and Let Love Rule. The worst was Does Anybody Out There Even Care.

Hmm it’s alright but not overly special

That’s a really good album.

soulful interesting record

Wow. I don't know why but I was expecting this would be terrible. I think I was getting him mixed up with Luther Vandross. Really good mix of funk with rock, leaning heavily on the latter. Lots of homage paid to various bands, heard elements of Faith No More, Beatles, even Nine Inch Nails in there. Not sure what that last track was about, skipping that it's a great album

Great album. Good rock.

This is a fun album from Lenny

Very enjoyable listen. Channeling '60s psychadelia with some Beatles influence too.

Good stuff! Funky and fun to listen to. His voice is not my favorite but the instrumental parts are fun. This man should be in the rock and roll hall of fame for keeping this kind of music relevant into the 21st cetury. High 4.

Surprisingly pretty dang good considering I've only heard his singles and they aren't my favorite. Definitely appreciated how raw and kinda guttural the singing could be. The music is quite enjoyable but the lyrics are kinda basic. Overall a very good debut.

ich liebe diesen warmen sound mit retronoten. Let Love Rule, My Precious Love .. wunderschöne balladen mit soul- und blues-elementen.

This was good. Very Lenny Kravitz, but very raw, like him before he was polished, but definitely had his voice (both literally and metaphorically). IT was funky and cool and had a good energy, and I liked it a lot, but probably wouldn't listen again. Four stars.

Very nice album.

a few classic hits

I don't know a whole lot about Lenny Kravitz's background, but this album is super fun, energetic, and soulful in many ways. It feels like a kid in a music production candy store on a bender.

Didn't know Lenny's music outside of "are you gonna go my way"; this is a great listen. Kinda funky. 4* Highlights: let love rule, i build this garden for us

I Built This Garden For Us is amazing. Didn’t like the 3rd or 4th song but the rest were really good. Enjoyed it better than I expected to.

Much better than expected

So many great songs, a treasure trove of gems. Dripping in Beatles influences.

Lenny! This was good! I thought it was going to be like the dreadful Get Away era of Kravitz from my youth, but actually it was just good pop-rock songs sung well and nicely produced. It's not going to be featuring on all time classic lists, but it creeps into my four star camp, which is more important I think.

Solid record. Love Lenny Kravitz

Another one who was just a name to me until now—I liked this. Rounding up to 4.

Good ole Lenny, good ole LP.

Great. Holds up well.

gostei demais em

Surprisingly enjoyable, and nice to hear several songs with positive messages.

I really liked the album. I think it's pretty cool. 4/5

I knew a few of Kravitz's 90s singles, so this was an easy listen. Didn't know he played almost every instrument, though. Nice.

There's a 1-star review for this album that compares Kravitz here to "Prince at home." Funny enough, I'd also compare Kravitz here to Prince, but in a 4-star way. I mean, 'ey, what can I say? I love Prince, I like the few Kravitz songs I've heard... Put 'em together with all these hippy vibes, and, hey, I can dig it. Tune in and drop out, man.

I’m at a 3.5 that I think I’m going to incredibly graciously bump up to a 4 that it just barely earns. I liked most of this album. It has plenty of flaws, but I can look past most of them. I think the self-control in his vocals is a bit lost at times; he can’t decide if he wants to be Ozzy Osbourne, Paul McCartney, Prince, or Stevie Wonder for most of this album. You can’t be all 4. Somehow, he ends up sounding like the lead vocalist from Bowling for Soup for parts of this album as a result, but ultimately, that’s fine. I think the lyrics on most of the tracks are good – pretty solid messaging throughout. I think the main issue I have with this album’s lyrics simply comes in its repetition, and I Build This Garden for Us is distinctly terrible about it. Really retreading a lot of ground throughout that track. The same thing goes for Be, which quite frankly, just stunlocked me with that “or am I a rapist who needs a release” line, because what the fuck does that mean? Is it about leaving prison? Is it about getting off? It’s a weird fucking line to throw in regardless. Instrumentation is great across the album – no complaints from me on this one. Some of the tracks went a little long on their outros, but I could forgive it in the same way I can forgive a Stevie Wonder outro for going long, because the vibes are good and the music is a jam. Ultimately, I do think this album just does more right than wrong to get up to a 4, but that could change on a relisten or two. It’s definitely not within the range of being a 5, though. This is, so far, the only album to have a straight 3 in the reviews so far, which tells me I might be a little generous, and I can see why. This is the type of album that might have more holes or flaws open up over time to bump it back down to a 3, but right now, I feel good about giving it the 4.

Really nice jazz and blues rock

I remember when Lenny was the epitome of cool. This album shows just how much he deserved that reputation!

Better than I expected

Interesting

While not my taste, clearly thoughtful and well made. Extremely diverse song writing that still somehow works together

A little cliché but such great grooves and vocals. Gotta go 4 stars!

Good, but not great, and lacking some of the attitude and swagger that made his later work brilliant. Loads of religious references, which surprised me.

I like Lenny Kravitz but this is an album of his I've not listened to too much. A lot of the good bits are there - catchy bass parts, soulful crooning, epic guitars, but seeing as it is his debut it's pretty raw

This is was really good. I’ve never really listened to him, but clearly he’s famous for a reason.

this was also a new listen! i actually really liked it and would listen again.

Shades of Prince, Stevie, John Lennon, even some grunge. I liked a lot of this.

I was not expecting to rate Lenny Kravitz this high. Was completely unfamiliar with his work, but the versatility and energy is incredibly impressive. He made this album basically ENTIRELY BY HIMSELF.

Some very catchy songs on this album. Great guitar work and songwriting.

This was a weird album, it sounded like so many different artists: Tom Petty, Beatles, Prince, Hendrix… it showed the talent that Kravitz has but also all the influences taken. I didn’t realize how well rounded that he was, I admit I hardly know any of his songs. There’s definitely some hidden depth, I’m gonna go 3.75/5

Great album.

01) Sittin' on Top of the World - 7,5 02) Let Love Rule - 8,5 03) Freedom Train - 7,5 04) My Precious Love - 8,0 05) I Build This Garden for Us - 8,0 06) Fear - 7,0 07) Does Anybody Out There Even Care - 7,5 08) Mr. Cab Driver - 9,5 09) Rosemary - 7,0 10) Be - 7,0 11) Blues for Sister Someone - 7,0 12) Empty Hands - 7,0 13) Flower Child - 7,0 TOTAL: 7,58 (76/100) I guess I tend to lose concentration towards the end because the marks are getting lower and lower in just about every album, not just this one... I'm torn somewhere between 3 and 4 stars. It's not a bad album, but it's really not special in any way... "Mr. Cab Driver" is my favorite track.

Enjoyed, not usually my type of music but it was good

Rock and soul

Funky Rock, well learned from Prince and Hendrix

Funky album with catchy songs.

I didn't know how I missed the train on Lenny Kravitz. This is really good. I think it's like his heavier output that must come later. But other than all the fade outs, this is great.

You can tell Lenny grew up listening to the Beatles all the time. His music evolved, but for a debut, this is an excellent effort.

pretty good, especially after the halfway point

pretty rockin, 2nd half of the album was a lot stronger imo. easy listening.

Cinna decided to take a break from costume design and it was the right idea! I like this one

Cool album- some good tracks I hadn’t heard before noticed- ‘i built this garden’ and ‘does anybody out there even care’

Nice...

Can hear: Elements of funk in the beats, Soul in the voice, Blues in the instruments. Overall a very good album, an easy listen. Perhaps the lyrics could be improved.

I like Baptisim and 5 better then this albun, but it's still good. Let Love Rule, Cab Driver are both solid.

Really good album. Might be some of my favorite Kravitz comps on this album. Soulful and funky. 4/5!

Good music. Kravitz' singing can get a bit rough at times, but he's good.

1989... Metal was hitting its stride, New wave/post punk was morphing to a more generic "alternative" term, and Lenny Kravitz comes out with his debut album bringing a breath of fresh air in the form of relatively simple but tight production - a more retro funk/rock sound showing various 70s rock and R&B influences, unlike anything that was out at the time. Very eclectic mix of songs, all really good, with a soulful, rockin' groove. Among my faves are I Build This Garden For Us and Fear, along with Let Love Rule.

Lenny Krevice

Folle guitare.

not bad lenny

rocky grungy TANGY

Very clean recording, perfecting the music of the previous decades. Quite enjoyable.

Excellent debut album.

Love this album. Lyrics deep and music raw and wonderful.

Good album. I really love how Lenny’s able to encapsulate the ‘60s while making an album that released in the ‘80s. 4.6/5 Fav: “Flower Child” Least Fav: None

I always liked the distorted, classic rock crunch of Lenny. I heard some songs I didn’t know till now.

This was before I really was aware of Lenny Kravitz, so I am not as familiar with these songs as much as later ones. I really enjoyed listening to this unique sound today and was glad this came up.

It's kind of funky, so it's kind of likable.

I loved the first two tracks and then my affection waned a bit and I found some of the lyrics a bit shallow. And then we got to jesus. Still a sexy, funky groove for a bit.

Ok, gewoon lekker album!

Really good harmonica sick chords cool love going from minor chord to same chord but major or other way around rock and roll

Great, fun listen on a drab day. Always enjoyed his music.

Fantastic

Good sounds throughout.

I remember my flatmates hating Kravitz as a kind of faux-Hendrix, but he's really not is he? He's just doing his own thing, and I really like it. Lyrics are occasionally a little cheesy but all good otherwise.

This was really great. Loved listening to this.

It was a nice Little Rock album and I appreciate the use of the saxophone in the songs and solos.

Not bad at all..

This was pretty fun actually! Upbeat and light hearted. Good funky rocky business.

It doesn’t sound like an 80’s album. I have to process it but for sure Lenny can scream.

That was very nice! Pleasantly surprised! I think this would be a 3.75 for me, but it was very pleasant listening, fun bass…generally good vibes

bangers and bops

At first I was very skeptical, but it grew on me. Impressive instrumentals, less impressed by the voice, but overall a good experience

Man bagged Lisa Bonet. He could fart in a mic for this album and he'd still be winning

4/5. I wanted to give this a 3.5, but there is obviously no such thing on this. I think this is Lenny’s best album as it’s more relaxed and focused on the fundamentals. It’s soft, it has soul. I’m feeling generous and will give this album a 4.

was good

Good album, I liked the title song of the album and I Build This Garden For Us best.

What a strange, disconnected album. Frankly, it feels like the songs from two different albums were shuffled together like a deck of cards. Not that I didn't like it. I liked it quite a bit, actually. It just feels like what it is: a debut album by an incredibly talented artist trying to figure out what his "thing" is going to be. Everything you love about Kravitz is here. There's just a lot of... other stuff. Not bad stuff, mind you. Just not what we've come to expect as Kravitz stuff.

Smooth and mellow. Will not likely listen again as it's not my wheelhouse, but I did enjoy it during the listening session.

Liked this! Flower Child was great!

Very, Very good. 4.5/5

4. What a nice surprise. I don't think I've ever listened one of his albums before, but really enjoyed this one.

I don't know a lot of Kravitz song, but his voice is clearly one of the most recognisbable, charismatic and coolest voice of the 90's (1989 i know). The softer and chill vibe of that reccord is very cool, it almost look like Blood sugar sex magik of the Red Hot, a kind of funk sound but with accoustic guitare, powerfull voice and on top of that a psychedelic sound too. Especially in the song let love rule, but Sitting on top of the world is my favorite, the accousitc, funky and soul mix is very good, the best in the album. Other good songs are: Freedom Train, Mr cab driver (a rockabilly/RNB song, who look like good ol' rock n roll) and i build this garden for us (Look a bit like Strawberry field, with the organ and the violin so a psycehdiclic song) This album really pay tribute to old rock n roll (even for 1989) like the psychedelic, funk, hard rock and soul influences but with Lenny's incredible voice and charisma. Unfortunalty, not every song impress me but its honneslty a very good album
