Reviews (page 6 of 6)
Artistically very good and certainly not unlistenable like a lot of the albums in this genre ….. but just feels like its missing something to push it beyond middle of the pack. By the end it was just a bit boring
I really don’t know what to make of this - I’m not even sure if I liked it - but it certainly had my attention. I just don’t know if that was for good or bad reasons. Indisputable, however, is the fact that singer Jay Anderson’s best contribution to music is his work as Kevin’s guitar player in his tribute band in “The Office” (and his composing the theme tune to the show, I suppose).
# 538 : Twelve Dreams Of Dr. Sardonicus by Spirit I can listen to it and it was kind of alright but quite forgettable. Nothing really stood out. Pick of the tracks : Animal Zoo Listened : 04/08/2025
It sucks, what else do you want me to say? They called this psychedelic rock in 1970 because they invented weed in 1971 Fav song: Space Child
This was a hard one to rate. The songs were all over the place. Started out with some really nice guitar work in the Prelude. Nature's Way was also fun. Animal Zoo was a total blast to rock out to. Then it started to dip. The next few songs were not great. Came back a bit with When I Touch You and some fun shredding on Street Worm. Then it closed it with more mediocrity. Best song: Animal Zoo
Trippy !
2/5
Turns out there may be such a thing as too much drugs after all
3/10
That was a fun listen.
Spirit crushed my spirit halfway through this tragedy.
Hmmm idk about this one .. felt a little too theatrical for me. The songs are good, but like dial it down a smidge
Not in high spirits for this one. Deeply plain and average. Like a hokey mish mush of several dozen better late 60s/early 70s acts. I should sue the group and the author of 1001 over how utterly inessential this album is. Plus I swear Spirit ripped off the opening progression of listening to paint dry.
Meh. Probably good in its time.
had a couple songs, like "Morning Will Come" that had some fun bounce to them but, overall, I wasn't really into this band. 2.5 rounding down.
Very 60s, hippyish stuff, wasn't keen on his voice
The only thing I know about Spirit going in is that Led Zeppelin ripped off Taurus. This whole album will be a surprise. Ok so maybe it was not so much of a surprise. It sounds like any number of bands of this kind from the time. It could be The Band, Country Joe & the Fish, CS&N, Humble Pie, etc. etc. I don't know what else to say. It's ok but very dated sounding in a generic sort of way. 2.5/5 rounding down.
Never heard of these guys, and I can see why. Kind of forgettable 70s music. Did get slightly better whenver they added horns. Essential listening... Nah.
Not my favorite. I like some songs by Spirit. "The Other Song" is an amazing showcase of their skills. But this album was too scattered for me
Not for me. The musicianship was fine, the lyrics appeared to be there just to deliver the vocals and didn’t really improve the tracks they were on. Though they were pleasant. It’s ok to have on in the background but not a “stop and listen to” , at least for me.
Sådär! Velar mellan en tvåa och trea. Får se imorgon vilket det blir.
I thought this was gonna be cool after the first track, but it's just a bloated album with way too many ideas and no real direction. The lyrics are sorta wack too. It's got good instrumentation though, I'll give it that.
Not to judge a book by it's cover (or in this case, an album) but the moment I saw the name/cover for this album I knew what the score was going to be. I was right. 4/10
psychedelic rock...... niinkös...alkaa vituttaa tuo..
So so
I have never heard of Spirit before today, it's not bad. The songs are pretty chilled out to listen to, probably good for background music. Some of the songs are pretty interesting and maybe a bit experimental. Still cool though.
It’s not bad but it’s not great either.
Very samey and of the soft rock sound I don’t favour
samey, but good for cleaning
loads of ideas, some better than others
Just okay. Not great
Did not enjoy it. Classic 70’s sound
Age of Aquarius hippy dippy stuff. The instrumental: Space Child, and then the next song When I Touch You were the least offensive.
Thanks to this list, I heard some of these tracks before due to Apple Music's algorithm suggesting tracks. I usually skipped them. I didn't this time but I found out that I didn't miss something. I usually like prog rock, but this was too bland for my taste.
Just a bit boring.
Ikkje nåke for meg
Never heard of it, but it wasn't too bad. High 2s.
eh 2/5
Meh, not bad at all but just very bland.
Unmemorable!
"Morning Will Come" and " Animal Zoo" are upbeat and fun but aimless, the rest is lightweight, spacy and dated. Okay for a sleepy jam
Kinda spaced out listening to it, nothing stood out. Wasn’t as good as the album title made me hope. ‘Animal Zoo’ and ‘Morning Will Come’ were ok.
Not for me..............
Sensationally bland, I just don’t understand why she’s the global superstar that she is.
nope
The second half was my favorite but this didn’t raise my spirit
4/10 The album can best be described as a collage piece of artwork where the bits and pieces are glued together very awkwardly. You can hear that everyone in the band is super talented and has mastered their instrument. However, for me the songwriting is just plain bad. They've got all the elements to be a good progressive/psychidelic rock band but just don't seem to find the way to use those elements right in this album. Favourite tracks Nothin' to hide Space child Least favourite tracks Natures way Love has found a way
jesus christ just because you got a blowjob while you high on mushrooms and this record was playing back in 1969 or whatever doesn't make this good or interesting music
Fun and funky and weird. Had never heard of Spirit. Clearly they're talented, although this isn't really something I'd ever reach for.
Not saying I think I am familiar with *all* of (pop)music history, but I wasn't really expecting to encounter a band I had never heard of as part of this project. Not entirely surprising that it is a (late sixties and early) seventies rockband I didn't know. It's kind of by numbers stuff for the era. It's sort of progrock-y but not as away with the fairies as someone like Pink Floyd. I think I would have preferred it if they either went all Led Zep-y hardrock or all experimental and spaced out. This in between vibe is not really working for me. I like that one of the band members stepdad is in the band but that's about it.
Shite!
Just not my style at all. Some nice guitar bits, but songs rambled everywhere.
That album was playing for nearly 40 minutes just now and i couldn't tell you a single thing that happened during it.
Meh. 4/10
It’s obvious by my other Psych rock selections of this challenge, I generally don’t like that genre of rock. That being said, even for psych rock, this album is pretty bland and boring. Not even sure how they decided this needs to be one people must here, as the album comes off as a band who just was checking off boxes while making the album. It just sounds so manufactured that it lacks any type of personality.
Nothing remarkable about this mediocre album. Even their signature song was OK at best. Not sure why this was included.
Rictus grin.
1970 acoustic rock. Not bad, but seems to collapse a bit under is own weight.
2/5
Rather midling psych rock
Not a lot of variety in Dr. Sardonicus’s dreams, is there?
It was okay, kind of forgettable
Perilously close to one-star territory, which I will reserve for the abominable.
Psychedelic 70s rock; quite a bit on the boring side. 2/5
ok, not my favorite. 2.5
A lot of psychedelic garbage, but one or two listenable songs
A few good songs but overall not an album I really like or felt entertained by.
Not bad but not impressive either.
Perhaps it was groundbreaking at the time. It now sounds rote.
boring and generic, i think we didn't listen to the album completely but we're not losing anything i think. kind of country/very worse beatles vibes
2 stars. a bit navel gazey
didn't love it - but appreciated it - I also didn't know them but that's the idea, right? : )
Pretty mediocre. I would not have included this work in this compilation.
Never heard of them before. They have some impactful elements, but it's not pieced together in a way that fully resonates with me. That said, I am a fan of Nature's Way...that one stood out.
Interesting production. Moments of excellent playing. But no real charisma and a lack of notable songs. Better than expected but not memorable.
Hippien metkuja. Ei kolissut oikein. 2/5
Vähän geneeriseksi jäävää psykeä ilman kunnon proge-jytää. 2/5
Started out pretty hot but the back half dragged. def some highs and lows
I listened to this twice and actually liked it less the second time. Guess this one's not for me. I do think the production is good, but the songs themselves just didn't draw me in.
Eh it's definitely trying to break the mold of standard late 60's/early 70's psych rock. Interesting ideas but they don't really land with me much.
nothing absolutely terrible but instantly forgettable
Cool name. Wasn’t particularly moved otherwise…
Like their sound, but wasn’t enough to blow me away overall.
Oh goodie, another band from the Steely Dan/Jethro Tull school of rock music. Just what I wanted. Best song: Mr. Skin
Not bad, 60s sounding rock.
Pretty intolerable
I generally greatly dislike 60s psychedelic rock but there were a few tracks on here that I quite liked. Not all of it though - there were a few that grated (like Life Has Just Begun). A high two.
Meh
Perfectly fine. I didn't pick up much of interest here.
I thought this was going to be naff and while it was, it’s was pretty listenable.
Boring rock, nothing really stood out here.
Another psychedelic record that I don’t really “get.” I don’t hate it. But I find most of these songs aggressively mediocre. Nothing that stands out. Some good production value that’s for sure. But I’m left completely unmoved. 2.5/5
Meh. Too much going on, with not enough payoff.
Who are these guys??? Never heard of them. meh, it was okay. 2 stars.
Is Natures Way the inspiration for the Law and Order theme? I'm not sure I'm judging this album fairly but I'm just so sick and tired of psychedelic rock from the late 60s early 70s! ~1/3 of our groups albums so far in the challenge have been psychedelic rock genre ~1/2 of all albums have been from 60s&70s Yawn. Next
While this band's legacy should certainly be more than, "the guys who sued Zeppelin a thousand times," this album doesn't leave anything behind other than a few catchy prog tunes that leave your brain as fast as they came in.
When I Touch You is wild as it begins and is very reminiscent of Pink Floyd-- you know that song that stars with the ducks. But there's mostly trashy 70's truckstop rock. This gives the album a pretty underwhelming feel, even with the Chicago style horns section.
That’s a very psychedelic album title. But it's a pretty boring album that fails to deliver dreams or the titular Dr. Sardonicus. Where was this doctor, who I would assume is prone to vicious mocking and cynicism? What was he dreaming about? While the music wasn’t very psychedelic, maybe the writing was. Spirit’s Randy California was probably on some good hallucinogens during the selection of his stage name and during the writing of “Twelve Dreams,” because that was some odd, nonsensical stuff. “Nature’s Way” is allegedly their signature song, but it was repetitively obnoxious. That most of the rest is more tolerable than that isn’t saying much.
Not for me
A bit proggy…
jo, sehr elektronisch das ganze; tlw. etwas anstrengend
I listened to this album multiple times while at work, and it did get better the more I listened. I don’t find it to be very psychedelic, but it’s some good 70s rock. Listen again: wouldn’t pick it but don’t mind listening Purchase for my collection: no Favourite Song:
nothing stood out. i honestly don't remember a single song from here.
Correcto pero no es demasiado de mi agrado.
This not even listed as one of the top 70 albums of 1970. Not sure why this is even on this list. So many other great albums of 1970 alone
This album just kind of washed over me. An artist I've never heard of with a album name that intrigued me. It started off kind of rough, it got better in the middle and then I was really ready for it to be over by the end.
I don’t get what this is, really. It’s folksy at times, psychedelic other times, schmaltzy, and sometimes silly. I don’t care for it. 2.5
Not bad, pretty fun in parts.
They sound like if the guys that did Best In Show or Spinal Tap did a movie about late 60s psychedelic rock this would be the soundtrack. They’re like too perfectly of a type that it’s on the nose.
2.0 Nothing really stood out to me. Maybe I wasnt listening closely enough but didnt really get the psyche-rock vibe that was advertised.
I have never heard of this band before and I was not familiar of any of the songs. It was alright for psychedelic rock. Relatively short. The dial didn't move much here. It was ok. I won't seek it out again.
I'm afraid this one was lost on me. I didn't actively hate it though.
This was so mid
Found this so boring. Like the eagles but worse. NEXT!!!
Meh this album didn’t really stick out to me. Nothing really special Top tracks: Animal Zoo, Morning Will Come - alternate mono mix
Pretty boring, really nothing I'd go back and listen to. Not badly produced or anything, just really unremarkable
70s prog with a goofy sci-fi style title, not an auspicious begining. Randy California is an all time great name so +1 for that. Some of it pretty basic blues guitar rock - fine but boring and done better by others. The more original stuff is more exploratory, combining that ye olde acoustic folk sound that English bands loved for some reason with wierder instruments/arrangements in a vague approximation of Zappa. Some of that stuff suffers from the prog tendency to shove way too many ideas into a song. Some songs are doing that theatrical Ziggy Stardust thing, very annoying. The best parts are the kind of trippy spacey songs that eschew those fussier prog elements and let the fuzzier riffs breathe. But this is basically the turd that you can polish enough to turn into Boston. Favorites: When I Touch You, Street Worm, Rougher Road
There are some bands that don't appeal to a lot of people because they are ahead of their time (The Velvet Underground), and there are some that probably just didn't manage to get enough exposure (maybe Echo and the Bunnymen) and others that just aren't polished enough to appeal to the masses (Wire). And then there are those that just address a niche and that's that. This band strikes me as the latter. Talented group, and what they're trying to do is interesting, but ultimately I don't think it's good enough. 2 stars.
Hated it. Not for me.
Didn’t do much for me. Nice background music I suppose.
I had high hopes after track 1 and while seeming well intentioned it lost its way pretty quickly. Verging on self indulgent
Seems like rock from the 1970s is just not for me 2/5
Eipä kummosesti eroa aikalaisistaan. Alkuun jaksoi kuunnella ja loppua kohden mielenkiinto lopahti.
Läpikuuntelu oli pakollinen paha. Ei jäänyt mieleen muulla tavoin
There's a hint of some cool rocks moves in here (some wailing, some groove, some energy), but unfortunately it is largely held back by being emblematic of the worst era of rock history, some spacey psychedelic experimental rock. Space Child suffers the most but they all dip enough into it to sound very dated.
t'was ok
This is...really eclectic. It's just all over the map in terms of genre and tone. For the right person that is going to be amazing! Every song is like listening to a new band! I am not that person.
FAVO: Animal Zoo, Mr Skin
I'm not certain about disliking Dr. Sardonicus; Nothing was sticky and America comes through as a certain carefreeness, which works counter to the threads "connecting" compositions. The instrumentals are more promising than any of the song song work.
Album wasn’t my thing. Sounded very much like 70’s rock, but nothing drew me in. Lyrics were ok, singing was so so and the music itself was generic. 2/5.
I had high hopes for this because of the good reviews and because psych rock from this era is really good overall but this just did not click at all
Very interesting listen. 60s/70s old school rock vibes
Wasn’t bad, but wasn’t anything special either. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
I had big hopes for this album, and the opening of the first track had me thinking this was going to be a lot folk-ier than what the genres had told me, but I was okay with that, as it sounded nice, but that was ripped away from under me mere moments in, and it never really returned to that sound. There was a repeating motif throughout the album that sounded nice, and they started getting somewhere with the final couple tracks, but it was too little, too late, as I was already pretty bored out of my mind. None of it is BAD, per se, but psychedelic rock in its lightest form comes off now more as dad rock than anything with actual edge, and they would've, quite frankly, been better off just going the folk route I so desperately hoped they would aim towards.
Ikke for mig
🤷
I thought this would be standard MOR American 1970s radio rock. It is that, but it's also so all over the place that it's 'guano' mental. Its not at all cohesive, but somehow makes sense and you've got to respect the band just doing whatever it was they felt like. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Nature's Way Date listened: 04/11/23
Halloween rock vibes, sometimes quite screechy. Not really my thing but can be background noise xD
cool art and album name. Actual music pretty boring but liked a few
like a slightly weird guess who
Some good moments, but mostly self-indulgent nonsense.
Parts of this was good, parts all over the place, not sure I’ll be back.
Sekmadienio rytui per ilgas albumas. Nežinau, gan įdomus rock/jazz fusionas, bet didelio įspūdžio nepaliko. Suprantu - reikšmę muzikos pasauliui turi, tačiau kaip standoffinis albumas manęs neužkabino, reikėjo pasistengti kad pabaigti.
Disproportionate representation of this genre
Passables Rockalbum. Als Hintergrundmusik akzeptabel.
Must I listen to this? It tells me nothing of the development of rock music that I wouldn’t get from a dozen other better albums. I do think the title is great. Then it’s all downhill. Perhaps the nadir is space child (instrumental). The title says it all. Bored. Boring. Tedium. Grinding boredom. You only have 1000. Don’t pad.
Oh well, on to the like with the other circa 1970 albums that sounds like a (bad as opposed to wonderful ) self indulgent teenager rebellious experiment... a quirky caricature of the 70s. ... was it " Deliberately challenging and hard to like " in that punky way.... ? They took the repellant image of a Rictus Sardonicus, the tetanus induced grin, from the horror movie (a 1961binteractive horror film) ... and made an album. Thumbs down. I choose punishment.
Nöä
Not quite sure why this album made the list. I feel it was almost the definition of average in every way. 2/5
It's alright, but just got me wanting to listen to better stuff
I am still totally perplexed by what this album actually is.
wasnt bad it was really boring
OK i listened to most of it, its like proto queen but not as catchy. Alright album but pretty forgettable. 2 stars
One of those albums that I listened to and immediately afterward had no recollection of ehat I had just heard. I know it wasn't abysmal, but it certainly failed to leave any kind of positive impression.
Geprobeerd, maar gefaald. Volgende graag.
Dit ging een beetje aan me voorbij
not terrible but not incredible. lotta neato ideas and one or two memorable songs. idk why this is in the list honestly; it’s a generic 70’s record. i mean it’s good but it’s hardly mind blowing (unless you’re stoned, which they probably were). definitely could’ve done without the 12 bar blue song whichever one that was. could’ve cut like seven of these songs. animal was memorable but so much so that i can actually sing it back as i type this out. not that cohesive as an album. good try guys.
So crazy that this album cover looks so cool but the music sounds so meh
Felt like a fever dream
Best Song: Morning Will Come. I'll take a prolonged crescendo any day. Worst Song: Love Has Found a Way. A mediocre song that they just never finished, choosing instead to abruptly stop in the middle. Overall: Totally ordinary 70s duderock. I imagine history is littered with dozens of bands exactly like this, whose songs were good while they lasted, but now carry a bit of a stink from being past their expiration date. Doesn't need to be brought back.
Spirit is from Los Angles, USA Genre Progressive rock First Listen. Heard of the band, not familiar with the album or any of the songs. Singles: ------------------------------- Animal Zoo (#97 USA) Nature's Way (#111 USA) Mr. Skin (#92) 2.5
A very strange sounding sci-fi-esque album by Spirit, it almost feels like being possessed by some at parts! I can see how this would have been enjoyed by many college radio stations in the 70s, and not so much by the mainstream charts. Best: Nature's Way Worst: When I Touch You Note: Spotify had 1996 reissue bonus tracks - didn't listen to these.
Nope
Prelude-i don't really like this. Spirit doesn't seem to have anything that stands out as great. maybe I'm wrong. We shall see....
Hated this. It may have been cool in 1960's California but today it sounds like dated dad rock with no redeeming features.
My god this is peak 1960s prissy psych-folk. Just no.
This album is nature's way of telling you something's wrong... and it's this very album.
I think I see what they were going for, it just fell flat in every way. A dud, truly unremarkable.
I had never heard of this album and I did not need to.
Almost an achievement to be that annoying and that forgetful at the same time.
Just wack. Please give me good albums.
Favorite Song: None

This is so bland. I've never heard any music that sounded exciting but was so boring before. The psychedelic portion of the sound isn't even weird enough to satisfy the expectation for that genre. Most of the time, even if I don't like some albums, I still respect for making me feel something but this... this is just empty. Best (and this is really stretching it) songs are Mr Skin and Street Worm. 2/10, almost put me to sleep.
Aged.
I did not get any enjoyment from listening to this. What it told me is that this kind of psychedelic rock is no more enjoyable in small portions than in large portions.
Terrible
What is this?
Perfectly average background music for sitting in a dive bar at like 2 pm on a Wednesday
Odd. I couldn't decide if they were trying to sound like Sid Barrett era Pink Floyd, or The Moody Blues: or both. But then I realized that if you changed the lyrics a bit, then you end up with a "Best of Spinal Tap" album. Weird listen.
point6.
Very generic
Weird rock band/ ambience. One big hit. One hit wonders.
Awful
If the animatronics from those 80s kids’ pizza party places cut a record…
This man couldn't hold a tune in a sack.
On principle, this kind of album is the true benefit of this list. Out of the way music you never would have discovered without being pointed towards it. Unfortunately, it sucks big time
I found this to be incredibly boring.
I'm beginning to think that in the late-60's or early-70's it must have been easier for bands to become "famous" because there just were less of them, and without the internet, music scenes were more localized. Otherwise, how would a band like Spirit ever make it onto a list of best ever anything? No wonder the only thing notable about them is they tried to claim Led Zeppeling copied "Stairway to Heaven" from them, which, judging by the quality of the music here, sounds pretty delusional. (I know that song isn't on here, but I have heard it and it's a stretch).
Would rather listen to Led Zeppelin backward at the bottom of a pool than listen to this.
Banal, pachouli stank hippie garbage
This album was the opposite of my vibe from the first note to the last. I can't find much to like about the songs at all. They are to slow, the voice is whiny, and the mixing is kind of weird at points. Big no from me.
1/5 hippies...
The first few bars of the first track set the tone. Dreary
I have never been a big fan, or any size of fan, of whatever that was.
Dont think I liked any of it. Just alot of nonsense. Drifts in and out of different sounds. Make sense it was in/around the time where the beatles were masive. Just a bunch of shit going on that doesnt need to be
Day340 - who did spirit pay to get on this list
It felt like something to sample, but on its own? Look, I don’t hear prog-rock or psychedelia, and I like that. Oh, now I listened to ‘1984’ (not on this album) which was recorded around the same time. I can hear the sci-fi prog-rockiness now. Yup. That seals it.
DNF
Not really something that appealed to me.
Mais um psicodélico que não bateu, nada de viagem ou sonho soporífero.
This was a bit of a mess. I liked some bits of it, and others just sounded overly indulgent. I am not sure they know what type of band they want to be. I kept thinking the album was done and it was a random playlist. Also way too long.
Frig... no...
I don’t get it.
This album was not for me. It's rare to hear LPs with such dry, uninteresting sounds. This has no personality and none of the songs stood out. I really don't think I can give this higher than a 1. 1/5.
Very forgettable.
Time has forgotten this band, and we're all a lot better off for it. Just a lot of self-important 60s nonsense
This is quite a far out album and definitely a product of its time. In places it reminded me a little of The Who, particularly in the more energetic sections and the slightly ambitious, conceptual feel. It is a fun listen overall. There is creativity and variety throughout, and you can hear a band trying to stretch beyond straightforward rock into something more expansive. That said, there is quite a bit of filler for me, and too many instrumental passages that interrupt the flow rather than enhance it. When it locks into a strong melody it works really well, but it does not quite sustain that level across the whole record. Favourite song: When I Touch You Least favourite song: The instrumental sections tend to drag for me Album artwork: Completely mental. Psychedelic, bold and very memorable
Not sure how this album got on the list. Curious what others think?
Hate it
Not for me.
Imagine how degrading it must feel to be one of the three psychedelic rock albums from 1968-1970 that didn't make it onto this list. I can give you Jefferson Airplane, I can give you Love, I can even maybe give you Moby Grape, but what the hell are we doing here with bands like Spirit, The Electric Prunes, Great Horse, Blue Cheer, or Country Joe & The Fish? I made one of those bands up by the way, have fun. This is actually nothing. I probably have drunk voiceclips on my phone that are more relevant to musical history than this album. Get real. One out of seven.
I'm just not a fan of psychedelia or rock music that doesn't have anything to say. This is overwhelmingly of the era. I don't like this era.
No. Wheezy, bad voice and unearned instrumental accents.
megaboring music that should've remained in the 60's. \"Favorite Decade 1970\" not any more.
I just can’t do it. I’ve tried over and over to like Spirit and this is me giving up. I love art rock, I love guitars but it is always a constant mishmash going everywhere with no cohesion. It’s over. I vacantly confidently say I don’t like Spirit now. 2/10
Spirit dus
I don't get it.
