A pleasant surprise

Ab und zu ist die Stimme gut. Akustische Gitarre und elektrische im Wechsel. Einfache Melodien

Definitely something I can get into. 3.5

Very good album, just seems a bit dirge-y to me

This is a really nice album. Good music, will have to listen to this one more often.

Sounds a bit like The Waterboys to me. No bad thing. I really liked this but I don’t feel i ingested enough. I might just seek out more. I’m not sure if it’s a 4 but more a 3.5 but for engaging and curiosity value…

These guys are excellent, and somehow I only know one of their albums (the follow up to this, Mighty Joe Moon) which I think I like better by degrees. Could be a familiarity thing. There's something innately confident about this band, they sound like they've been around forever.

This is solid. I got tuned onto these guys when their second album came out. I still prefer that one, but today's listen made me appreciate this one a lot. Great songwriting, performances, and arrangements, but I was getting a bit tired of it all by the end.

I had never heard of this band before now. This has been the most pleasant surprise in this project so far. It really blew me away. I imagine it continue to get better as I keep listening.

This is a really good album. Completely unknown to me but I enjoyed it from the beginning to the end.

I really liked this. I bought the second album when it came out but never went back to this one for some reason.

Nice Rock Album, sounds older than from 1993...

Højrøvet selvhøjtideligt intetsigende tænker jeg efter at have lyttet til The Shining Hour. Efterfølgende retter Jupiter & Teardrop og Fuzzy lidt op på det :-) Wish You Well får mig til at overveje at anskaffe mig et eksemplar af pladen.

Never heard of him before. I enjoyed the album.

I liked this one! Interesting/pretty songwriting with a ‘90s vibe.

Nice to listen to

Really, really enjoyed this one. Only track I didn’t like was the last one. I can’t believe I’ve never heard of them.

First time listening to grant lee buffalo.

I first became familiar with Grant Lee Phillips from his work on Gilmore Girls, so my expectations for this album were somewhat tempered by that. But they shouldn't have been, as this is an absolutely fantastic listen. I won't lie, I just finished listening to it, and can't remember many details of what I just heard, outside of some great guitar tones -- which is typically not a great sign (hey, to be fair, I'm listening at work) -- but I still hope I remember to come back to it, because my general feeling right now is very positive. I love me some 90's alt-rock, and it sounded like they did it right.

Another great find, I could see this album being a large influence on many early 70s artists.

First Listen. Missed out on listening to these guys back in the day. This is a really good album, somewhat dated to the early 90s (something I can't quite put a finger on reminds me of Big Head Todd and Pearl Jam with some of the vocalization stylings), but the musicianship is great and I like the nearly alt-country songs.

I have a bit of a soft spot for these guys. Grant Lee toured with Robyn Hitchcock, one of my favorite artists, and the show was really quite memorable. Grant Lee Buffalo was pretty popular in Boston when I lived there.

Cross between Elton John and Bruce Springsteen

never heard of this band before...

I don't know why it's here, I never heard of it and is nothing revolutionary, but I can picture myself listening to this album while drinking a beer in the porch I don't have at the end of summer

Nice rock album. Both acoustic and electric. Really good vocals.

Very 90s alt-rock, nice to listen to but not the most challenging thing. Judging by his images, he only recently learned how to make eye contact.

sounds not at all like the 90s and very much like how singer-songwriter people are in the last 5 years

Singing calls to mind many different quality influences – Dylan, Mike Scott/Waterboys, Vedder. Can be fairly criticized for not having a hit and for being a touch same-y. Lots of interesting cuts. "Shining Hour" is quite a strong opener. "Jupiter and Teardrop" is an epic acoustic ballad. "Have to Be Crazy" is an effective closer. "America Snoring" suggests how they might have been a full power ALT-rock band, which good thing they avoided as they show some tendency toward the smoldering overseriousness that was a weak spot of that ilk. Still, this works, as one has always like some smolder in one's melancholia, and some restraint in one's rage. Can get behind them any day, though admittedly this is right in one's sweet spot, both genre-wise and era-wise.

Great folksy rock album. Enjoyed it.

I liked it a lot!

Some of the songs on this album reminded me of other bands, but who influenced who is hard to say. Not the groundbreaking album that I was expecting, but not too bad either.

Never heard of him but thoroughly enjoyed

Really like this album.

I really enjoyed the album my favourite of the songs was Soft Wolf Tread.

Enjoyed this album a bunch! A nice suprise considering the year and first impression from the cover. Dug the sound, mood and execution of the music.

"fuzzy"

Honestly, just kind of bland. This one isn’t really anything special aside from a couple tracks. Just one note and monotonous. It’s meh.

I really enjoyed this! Sounded like an album full of talent to me. Vocals were beautiful, loved the acoustic guitar and folk/country sound. A few songs at the end were kinda boring, but overall I loved the sound, I imagine it would sound really great live as well.

I listened to this a few times and I like it a lot. It does sound amateurish in production value, but musically it's fantastic. His voice is a treat to listen to, I love the way the piano is worked in, and especially I love the guitar solos, the tone is so dirty. The lyrics tell good stories without being in your face, although American politics...ugh. I didn't enjoy so many songs towards the end of the album, but this is one I will definitely come back to.

Actually pretty good! I’m impressed

Solid fall bike ride album. Got pretty close to tears on few songs, maybe I just need a therapist. 4/5

bit goofy but banging

OK, easy to listen to

Never listened to this band before. Solid. Really enjoyed it.

very good sound, enjoyed it. Fairly clean and polished overall.

Not a single bad song

I thought I knew enough about music but the classification of this album as 'country' absolutely baffles me. What I think I'm listening to is a great mix of acoustic and electric music, which draws from the 70's rock, roots and Americana, with an absolute amazing lead singer, with a sound that's influenced by the grunge. Some incredible songs like "Jupiter and Teardrop" and "Fuzzy" mixed unfortunately with some lesser gods further down the tracklist. All on all a really pleasant listen. But Country? Really? Am I so out of touch?

Um hello wtf is this? This is awesome? Never even heard of these guys before? Thanks 1001?

If Michael Stipe and Natalie Merchant hooked up (which, believe it or not, was actually a rumor floating around in the early '90's) and started a family, their children would grow up to form a band that sounds something like this. Grant Lee Buffalo deserved a lengthy career similar to R.E.M's instead of one like the 10,000 Maniacs had.

Wow what an unexpected listen! This is another one of those "How have I never heard of these guy before??" moments. It has that 90's alternative sound that I really dig. At times almost sounding like a 90's Rolling Stones (Not actual 90's Rolling Stones - like, if they actually evolved their sound) It got a little boring near the end but as an album I really really liked this. 4

There are some really strong songs and great highs on this album. I think the main thing holding back a 5 star review is a few weaker songs in the back half, but some really interesting and delightful sounds throughout. "Fuzzy" and "The Shining Hour" are key tracks for me.

Not really a country album. I got vibes similar to Pavement when listening to this - that sort of hidden gem with enough of a literary slant that it'll end up on thrift store shelves for hipsters to brag to their friends about discovering. 7/10

i actually ended up liking this more than i thought i would. distortion and tribal drums for a country album made for a really unique alternative sound

Not bad!

Pretty solid album.

I never really paid them attention at the time. In fact, I had always had an imagined history for Grant Lee Buffalo: He was an uncredited member of Buffalo Springfield. He was a player on some Grant Hart solo records. He was in Buffalo Tom. Of course, I was wrong. He was, in fact, a whole band. And yet, how wrong was I? Basically, Grant Lee Buffalo music feels like a cross between some Neil Young and Buffalo Tom. If you ear-squint real hard, maybe you can even hear the softer side of late Husker Du somewhere in there. Anyway, this record is the reason I'm engaged in this project. Let me hear some things I completely missed and let me re-appraise some things I let pass me by in my high snobbery days. This is a solid record from a band that totally fell by the wayside for me.

Didn’t expect much from this album from the album cover, buts it’s brilliant great album deserving of its place on the list and now added to my rotation.

Needs another listen but I enjoyed it. Front half more than back half but yeah.

I think it'll need a few more listens. I like the lyrics, the frontmans voice, which feels like a yeehaw Kurt or Frank Black, and the variety on show. It may yet be a bit too country for me, but it seems to hold a lot of promise.

The Hook, Fuzzy, Stars & Stripes <3

I enjoyed that! Instrumentally it wasn't my favorite, but would listen again

dislike the first track, the rest are pretty good

It took a few iterations through the album before it took a hold, but i like the overall style and tone. Certainly very 80's/90's alternative... a good balance of interesting lyrics and instrumentation. Songs like Fuzzy and The Hook are really strong, but there's lots of treats along the way.

Why is this marked as Country and that's all? There's a lot more going on here than that. This was pretty good otherwise. The starting songs were easily the best of the album, with some more good songs peppered throughout, but still pretty solid, was expecting to dislike this more than I did, though. It has this feeling of "meh" resonating from it.

I liked it. Early alt country. A sign of what would take over ten years later with Wilco and Ryan Adams making their way into the mainstream. A little one note, but there are some stand out tracks - Dixie Drug Store in particular.

This got a lot of buzz when it was first released, and I do believe it was high up on my list of best of 1993. Looking back, it deserved its slot on that list. Very good songs, lots of Americana influences and great vocals by Grant Lee Phillips helped carve out a niche at a time of grunge dominance. A lot of highlights, but Soft Wolf Tread and Dixie Drug Store stand out.

This is the kind of stuff I came here for... bands I really should know, but don't. I liked this quite a bit. Sounds very 90's when listening to it for the first time now, but there were some really beautiful melodies and just all around good songs here.

Whoa, really liked this one! It's rock, feels like it's got a tinge of Americana to it, but the melodies and vocal performances are just so full of life and excitement, it's such a nice departure from what we've had lately. It's weird, I can't really point to any one thing that's fantastic on here, but it's all just done really well. Very crisp and engaging instrumentals, great vocals, just really good stuff. I'm always leery of artists I've never even heard of appearing on a list like this, but damn, this was worth the inclusion for sure. Favorite tracks: The Shining Hour, Wish You Well, The Hook, Dixie Drug Store, America Snoring. Album art: Just a guy, low-res guy even. Not at all suggestive of how good the music is, extremely unassuming. I can't say I like this cover, but I like what it's hiding. 4.5/5

I feel like I may have heard Grant Lee Buffalo a handful of times as a teenager and blown it off. I was mightily impressed to hear it with a more mature outlook. The vocals were slightly reminiscent of Bowie and I think it is a very rich and unapologetic album that stands pretty tall. I gave it two listens, because I am always intrigued with artists that I truly hear for the first time and genuinely like! This sounds authentic and technically pleasing.

You know what, quite enjoyable. Almost bland on first listen but had some high points on the second. Something I'll listen to again just to be sure. Soft rock rhythm, upbeat. It sounds as if the album was very influential on noughties US indie and UK musicians such as badly drawn boy, iamkloot and the like. Perfectly nice.

Too expressive for a convenient background listening. But still good energetic performance. A discovery to me…29 years later finally.

7,6 Nice sounding instrumentals Bit slow in the middle, but makes up for it at the end

This is gorgeous. Lush, wild, romantic, gothic. More than a whiff of the Buckley's about it.

I liked this! As someone else on this site noted, some of it is a bit like an acoustic Pixies, some more folky. I think it might need a few listens to get the hang of it, but there’s lots here to like.

90s nostalgia trip, loved it then, still got it now. Fuzzy is a great groove.

What a gem — such a solid alt-rock album with a mix of styles on it. I’ve listened to it twice through on long-ish drives and really enjoyed it. It’s great highway music. He’s a great singer too. He sounds like Father John Misty on a few tracks. The opening notes of “Jupiter and Teardrop” sound so much like David Bowie’s “Moonage Daydream.” It has to be a direct reference / deliberate fake-out. I got a kick out of that. My favorite songs so far: “The Shining Hour,” “Jupiter and Teardrop,” “Fuzzy,” “Stars n’ Stripes,” “Dixie Drug Store”

legalzinho, pegada smashing pumpkins mas mais agradável

Soft rock, early 90's feel that I dig!

Warm and appropriately "fuzzy" Americana rock. Nothing here blew my mind or anything, but it was a very solid listen I see myself coming back to.

Fuzzy is an accurate descriptor of this album. It is warm in the cold. A big heavy blanket. Maybe a tad too heavy though.

Very pleasant alt-country. Clear influence on Father John Misty. Will listen again.

Debut album from the Los Angeles trio. Some describe their music as a type of alt-country; I would put them firmly in the rock category. Their best songs tend to have soaring guitars and vocals building towards guitar solos in an almost epic and anthem-like style. And, there is no doubt Grant Lee Phillips has a great rock voice. I'd say they do the soft-loud-soft-loud dynamic but different than Emo or The Smashing Pumpkins. I read a comparison to Neil Young which I see especially with the mid-song guitar solos and the subjects he covers: environment, abortion, racial issues and broken dreams. There a number of very good songs on this album. "Jupiter and Teardrop" is good example of the soaring guitar and vocals towards guitar solos. "Wising You Well" is very dramatic and builds which this band seems well apt to excel at. "America Snoring" is a commentary of the USA circa 1993 and maybe the centerpiece of the album commenting on abortion and race riots in LA. This is the first Grant Lee Buffalo album I've dug into; well, I've been missing out. A definite keeper and makes me want check out their other albums, most of which appear to be worth doing.

It was fun. Only song that stood out was Dixie Drug Store.

This was an unexpected gem, a high quality, well assembled collection of alt country songs, perfect for a road trip or quiet nights in the evening. Really enjoyable.

This has always been a band I've had in the back of my head as something I should listen to and like. Here I am listening to them and liking. Enjoyably dramatic 90s rock. Vocals stand out, for sure. Gives me Jeff Buckley vibes? I'll probably go back to not listening to them, but thinking, "Ya know...I oughta."

4.0 - Any of these songs would’ve been absolutely PERFECT as filler for a mix CD you gave to your crush back in ’93. It’s actually a solid record - very in the middle of a lot of different sounds from that era. "Jupiter And Teardrop" is a terrific archetypal 90s acoustic/electric love ballad. I like the way "Stars N' Stripes" trails off moodily at the end. "Dixie Drug Store" tells a fun story - very rom-comesque. "America Snoring" and "Grace" showcase some generic political coffeehouse musings. Lots of heart, lots of charm.

Surpreendente a sequencia de rock acústico.

Good, chill music with rock vibes. I enjoyed it!

Early 90s raw rock. This would equal the early indie scene while grunge was pushing hair metal to the side.

Really good, classic of the genre and if it's good enough for Michael Stipe, its' good enough for me. "America Snoring" is standout track to me, but love the overall feel and mood of the record. My total sweet spot -- both in style and timing -- early ;90s but I didn't give them enough time back in the day. I almost certainly would have seen them open for someone but can't recall. They deserved more recognition for sure.

Meilleur album de cowboys qu'on ait eu jusqu'à présent Prefs: The Shining Hour, Fuzzy, Dixie Drug Store, America Snoring, Grace Moins pref: Stars'n'Stripes

Kende ik niet, ontdekking, verrassend. gevarieerd.

I had never heard of this band before and I am really digging this record. I'm surprised I'm connecting with it so much as I usually don't with this kind of rock but it's a great indie/alt album.

True Rating: 73/100

really liked this album. The song Fuzzy is great.

Had "Mighty Joe Moon" back in the day but never really listened to any of their other albums. Like their sound. Sort of like Jangle Pop with a little more punch.

Some really nice moments and slick transitions. A lot of tolerable repetition between those.

Yeah this was paint by numbers rock and roll, throughly enjoyed

Really good album. Another band I wish I’d heard of before.

Folk rock. Bastante bueno.

Pleasant 90s Indie

Best way to describe it is Robyn Hitchcock meets Neil Young and Mazzy Star

Dad rock

Solid album. I like the vocals. This is one of those 90s alternative bands that flew under the radar. Quite a nice find.

I didn't expect to enjoy a country album

Nice! Enjoyable rock and Americana. Better than The Band? Not sure. Favorite was Dixie Drug Store.

Liked it

Música country / pop con toques Folk. Entona bien. Tiene un toque British pop.

Alternative rock with a great sense of melody. A catchy album which is also a relevant indie rock effort.

Crafty 3.8

I qquite enjoyed this album. I was initially sceptical but am now a convert

- American Rock

HHHHHHEEEHH S'ROCK!!

This is like grunge-y rock and roll goodness. Had some bangers on it.

Very interesting and 'easy on the ear' album, like vocal a lot too

Very pleasant. Very interesting. Beautiful voice. Nice compositions. Just tired me a wee bit towards the end. 7/10

Pretty good, but not perfect

Potentially a great album. Need to listen some more though.... fuzzy intro is very some might say!

This one might grow on me with more listens but it's unlikely that will happen.

This is #day693 of my #1001albumsyoumusthearbeforeyoudie challenge, and… the fact that Michael Stipe once called Fuzzy "the best album of the year, hands down" is quite the statement, considering 1993 also gave us Siamese Dream, In Utero, and Songs of Faith and Devotion, to name just a few. The album is fine... It's very '90s, but I'd rather revisit some R.E.M. The title track and "The Hook" are my personal standouts. Otherwise, this is a 3 out of 5. Looking forward to #day694.

I had never heard this album and always wanted to give it a shot. The music was nearly exactly what I expected it to be and I enjoyed it. I am not sure I would consider this to be one of the best albums of all-time. I will work hard not to give this another "3," because I guess it has a place in the book, even if I am not sure that I would continue searching out the band's music. I had heard about how good this album was quite a few times and I'm glad I got to listen to it, even if it didn't compel me to listen to Grant Lee Buffalo's other albums. My favorite songs: The Shining Hour Jupiter and Teardrop Fuzzy The Hook You Just Have to be Crazy

aaah 90s rock okay! ah es isch e band?? noice. finds huere cute bis etze. isch das amerikanische oasis?? uhuere. hm es isch no nice so d texture wos anebringed. bin immerwieder hooked gsi und finds im ernst mega schön. bin nöch amne vieri.

OK, nothing special

liked it

Very Ryan Bingham sound

Title track is really powerful- great buzzing guitar and soft country/grunge instrumentation. His vocals almost remind me of Ian Anderson a bit. I like the album's mood and feel quite a bit. Very easy to listen to. Wish I could give it an extra half star.

Not really sure about this one. Need to listen again

Not my type of thing. Seems good though.

194. not bad

I expected this to be some country, but it's a mix of alternative country rock, kinda just how it says on its page. I guess if I get to play rdr2 and I want to feel more melancholic and alt instead of badass, I will keep this album in mind :D I wouldn't call this generic, as I really feel some emotion emanating from these tracks, but just not enough to be very memorable. Overall a nice listen, it's worth a try. Overall 3.4, 4 and playlist worthy: Wish You Well, Stars n'Stripes, Grace, Fuzzy. Maybe I will come back and get to love this more

I thought it was pleasant enough and enjoyed where it went sonically. It never surprised me, which I don’t love, but it feels derivative in a way I can appreciate. Not much else to say: probably a weak three overall. STAND OUT SONG: “Jupiter and Teardrop” HONORABLE MENTIONS: “Fuzzy”, “America Snoring”

I enjoyed this, nothing stuck out, but it was fun to listen to

I really don't know how much I like this album, but I do know it's undeniably of the 1990s.

This sounds utterly "90s" in a way I am simply unable to explain in words. It's a really nuanced sound, requiring more focus than I was first able to give it, so required a second listen. It's not all great, and when I dislike it I REALLY dislike it (The Hook, Soft Wolf Tread, Dixie Drug Store, Just Have To Be Crazy) but the rest is something I'll find myself listening to again and processing further. A little disappointing that is only about half the album.

Beautiful sounding record by an artist I’ve only known by name before. Will give it another listen. Atmospheric production and interesting songwriting that deserves further attention. Nothing jumped out to grab me, but the vocals and echoes pulled me in on cursory listen.

I thought this was going to be a massive surprise winner based on the first track. "The Shining Hour" was really interesting, deeply layered, good energy, good instrumentals, decent vocals... I was seeing myself really enjoying this one. Unfortunately the album dropped off an absolute cliff. By midway through I was just bored. There's the odd bit of interest, but most of this just comes across as pretty middle of the road alt-rock drivel. The vocals ended up being one of my least favourite aspects; they have their moments, but there's too many bits that didn't click with me. Not going to relegate this too low, because none of it was downright bad, and I'd maybe listen to a couple of tracks again, but the album as a whole is very mid.

Prima country-achtige alt rock.

I enjoyed it, didn’t love it

it's alright

There's some good stuff in here.

Pretty good! The songwriting is impressive, I found myself moving to just about every song. His voice would have to grow on me a bit.

I really wanted to like this from the description in the blurb as that would have been something really different but it didn’t quite live up to that. Enjoyable but not as unique as i had hoped it might be.

it was ok, this type of singing is a bit grating for me unfortunately, and some of the more guitar-heavy songs were meh, but the other instruments were really good, i appreciate music that lets you hear an electric guitar screech and the cymbals crash down

this was just alright to me, maybe I'm not currently open enough to falling in love with this sort of sound. I liked listening but don't feel strongly any way tbh.

Gillade några låtar 3/5

I had forgotten about that one.

This list keeps making up 90s musicians who don't exist. Never heard of them. I'm afraid the Wikipedia article mentioning that Michael Stipe likes this album influenced my opinion of it because it turns out the album is quite ok? So much so that I'm giving it a 3 3/5

I didn't particularly dislike any of this but only The Hook really grabbed me. Which is apt, I guess. It's nice music, solid early 90s alt. A good listen, not particularly revelatory, but happy to have checked it out.

It's okay

Feels like the kind of album that would grow on me if I listened to it a few more times staring off strong with The Shining Hour. I’m not the biggest fan of country music but whether it’s the heavier rock influence or the melancholy feel of it this song really did it for me.

This one needs more attention. Not a bad song on the album. Will definitely be a grower.

Grant Lee Buffalo’s Fuzzy feels like a strong mostly acoustic-driven alternative rock demo—stripped down, intimate, and consistently engaging. While it didn’t exactly blow my socks off, I’m glad I gave it a listen and can at least understand why it earned a place on the 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die list. Will I seek out more from Grant Lee Buffalo? Maybe. Only time will tell.

This is fine middle of the road alternative music. It's inoffensive and unremarkable, but enjoyable.

Firstly, I want to say how much affinity I have for 80's/90's singer songwriters with a punky edge. I mean you name em, I probably love em. I'd never heard this band, despite being a vacuum for this sort of thing, so I gotta say I was excited. It's enjoyable! If I'd heard it at the right time and place maybe I'd love it. But like, right now it really doesn't connect.

Ok but nothing special

Notes of country, grunge, emo, and rock. Enjoyable, but nothing really stuck out to me.

That's one terrible album cover. I went into this expecting a really bad folk album, but instead I got something that is a mix of 80s alternative, hair metal ballads, pearl jam, and a bunch of celtic stuff. It works. A lot of mid/late 90s bands are going to use this style of music to disturbingly terrible effect.

a little bit more exciting than just regular country music but apart from a few songs, this was not impressive at all

Bit ordinary . Bottom end of 3 .

There’s one or two in here that’ll make it into the rotation

Mellow but mild. Was worried it was going to be country, but its not. But its also not really rock. Or folk. Or glam. Just generally a guy singing ok with an ok guitar and background rhythm.

Early 90s cool/acoustic guitar, light electrics. Fun and folky but angsty too. Soul asylum / 4 non-blondes, etc. He did the U2/Bono "haaaaa, haaaaaaaa" noise.

A low 3

well worth a listen. has a bit of a mainstream rock riding the alternative wave feel, less of itself than the really good stuff of the 90s is. it makes a lot of sense that the guy from REM would love it and that the guy was the 'town troubador' in Gilmore Girls.

somehow REM, bowie, radiohead, with a bit of country?

Decent album.

I see the vision here.. weak start but decent overall.

First couple of songs didn't grip me at all, but with the title track and after, I started to get the appeal. I like the Wikipedia classification of it as "gothic country." I think it ties in indie folk and grunge rock styles a bit as well, but it's all very musical and an enjoyable listen.

Never heard of this artist. I enjoyed the listen. I would put it on again. 3/5

An interesting album where I can simultaneously hear what bands influenced its sound and all the bands that were potentially influenced by it. Ultimately an album I will more than likely not be returning to after today but I didn't hate that I had to listen to it. 3/5

At times this almost exceeds its limitations but ultimately it falls short of being great. Perfectly serviceable, not annoying, just not extraordinary.

I heard never heard of Grant Lee Buffalo. Found the album to be good not great but did enjoy listening to it.

I enjoyed some of the songs, wouldn’t mind another, more focused listen

Fuzzy sounds like a long countryside drive during cloudy weather with excellent coffee nearby. Grant Lee Buffalo deliver mellow guitars, emotional vocals, and songs perfect for quiet evenings. Some tracks fade together after awhile, but the album remains cozy, heartfelt, and pleasantly unhurried from beginning to end.

Fine nothing special

This was totally new to me but it really should’ve been in rotation a while. It’s good! And it’s clearly paved the way for a bunch of artists I’ve enjoyed over the years.

Me: Hey, isn't that the guy on Gilmore Girls? Wikipedia: Why yes. Yes it is!

Pretty good all things considered, despite my dislike of the genre

A rare example of an artist I have not encountered before. I enjoyed the mood, but nothing grabbed me. Could be a grower.

Yet another offering where there are some nice moments, the first track is great, but overall there is just nothing to make it memorable or stand out. The album somehow seemed longer than it actually is 2.5

Nice listen but also forgetttable 3/5

Fine but unmemorable

An interesting album that has some glam rock touches in my opinion as I noticed a Bowie influence. Not something I would listen to regularly but not bad.

A fairly run of the mill listen. Nothing that I disliked, but also nothing that overly impressed me. This would serve well as a soundtrack to a very average life.

Dainos ok.

Fairly pleasant with a few standouts. Pleasantly surprised me.

I really liked the first song and I really thought I was in for a 4/5 star album but.. nevermind. It really faded into the background after a while. This is the kind of music I would imagine some guy would play on facetime on the guitar and you have to pretend you're enjoying it even though you would give anything for it to end, which is kind of a nightmare scenario for me...

Aggressively average music.

Lidt rem agtigt

Indie-ish, doesn't hurt anyone.

Helaas doet het me bar weinig

Good, worth another look

I was surprised at how listenable it was. Never heard of the band before but a pretty decent recomendation.

I also like the song Moonage Daydream. Really good album. I dig the fuzzy guitars. Favorites were Jupiter And Teardrop, Fuzzy, The Hook, and Dixie Drug Store.

Dejligt dynamisk. Dog heller ikke noget stand-out.

I enjoyed listening to this debut album from Grant Lee Buffalo! It didn’t blow my mind but it was pleasant to listen to. Overall, I enjoyed this alt country/rock album and I would listen to it again in the future!

Trivelig alt-country. Litt frontlastet. Top 3: Fuzzy, The Shining Hour, Wish You Well

melodiöser rock mit gitarrenlast. tolle entdeckung!

Decent if not remarkable album.

Better than I was anticipating and I would probably relisten, but I’d also struggle to remember how any of the tracks actually sounded. Is this one of the 1,001 albums of all time though? Probably not.

Not bad but will I listen to it again? I doubt it…

Couple good songs

totally pleasant music! honestly had no complaints, wasn't the most ambitious album but i dont think it was trying to do that much ultimately...

It's like Jeff Buckley and Bruce Springsteen via the Stourbridge greebo scene of the early 90's

kinda ate

Prefer The Waterboys.

It's one of the stronger albums from the cabal of 90s American guitar folk-rock. High-calibre influences clearly weave throughout: a touch of Neil Young; The Pixies sound in bouncing 'The Shining Hour'; when the double strum hits on 'Jupiter and Teardrop', anyone else minded to shout: "I'm an Alligator!". There certainly is a Bowie thread in some of it. And 'Dixie Drug Store' is - let's charitably call it - a 'homage' to Warren Zevon. Whilst it plays a bit to the dirge of grunge, it's mashed with some REM college rock to pave the way for later alt-country. The album is decidedly stripped down, and therefore has to be reliant on decent melodies throughout (of which there are several, especially the opening five tracks). It may at times feel a step away from teenage angst, but a step in the right direction, toward pathfinding alt-country credibility. Some nice melodies throughout, and tasteful arrangements complete the sound. I'm not underwhelmed nor am I overwhelmed. It's the classic definition of a whelming album.

I love the overall tone of this album. It's like a precursor to modern shoegaze mixed in with a bit of country. There are some great melodies on here but it gets a bit boring after the first few songs. I don't mind putting this on in the background while I work but there's just something about this that doesn't hit like other records do. And I'm a bit distraught by that since these guys seem so good! Favourite tracks: Jupiter and Teardrop, Dixie Drug Store, America Snoring 3.5/5

It was just good for me. I liked it, but not a lot of variety/ change in colour/dynamic throughout. Didn’t love it dont hate it, will have completely forgotten about it in a week.

It's okay. If I said "alt rock with a touch of country in the 90s" you'd probably be able to imagine what this entire album sounds like and whether it's for you. America Snoring is terrifyingly prescient though. Generally the political bent on this album is extremely strong and does elevate things somewhat. I actually came around to the vocals toward the end of the album, but they can be somewhat grating in places. The worst parts of this album are merely generic, wherein the the insturmentation feels like something you've heard many times before and don't elevate the singing. The best part of this album have a suprisingly unique vibe being a post-punk almost gothic take on country that I've heard before in the later works of Johnny cash, but never really explored as a genre in itself. Unfortunately I think the album has a dose more of the former, generic sounds than the latter.

There's been a lot of Americana thus far. This was good, but not stand out imo

Never heard of this guy, but I liked the album.

Not bad. Replay yes

A nice mix of folk, country, and alternative rock.

it's not bad, but a white man naming himself buffalo makes me lol

Good sounding if someone was singing it live at a bonfire or something, but not something I would actively seek out to listen to. Title track was good

Comfortably dull. The very standard of a neutral 3 by which all other albums will now be judged.

I would need another listen to really decide on this. First impression was that it seemed like there was some depth. The melody sure sucked though. I might give it another try. I also might not.

It's a bit boring, but otherwise fine. Stand-outs - Fuzzy - The Hook

This was a pretty decent album, nothing too crazy but decent

Been meaning to listen to this for a while so nice to get it here. This started out as good but a little bit generic 90s alternative, like the embodiment of MTV unplugged. Not a bad thing but not my favourite. But then halfway through you get Soft Wolf Tread and Stars n' Stripes doing a sort of twisted fairytale thing, and then the bigger, noisier America Snoring and Grace, and I'm sold again. I'll say this just misses my first listen 4 cutoff

I don't know... This week was very weak with album recomendations.

I was not previously familiar with the artist or album. I was actually expecting country from the name and cover art. Wikipedia actually calls this country but I would consider it to be pretty offbeat indie/alt rock album with some country leaning, not too far from Wilco. I don't mind this too much, and there is some weirdness here and there. I may listen again, but probably wouldn't seek it out.

Cool ig

Cosy and pleasant listening. Liked it.

Solid album, love Jupiter and tear drops. Never listened to 12 string guitar album but loved the 90s vibe.

3 Stars. Average album. I admittedly had it on in the background, but only once or twice did it peak my interest enough to move into active listening

I listened to a lot of 90s alternative music, but I don’t remember this one. I didn’t love it, but it still tapped into some comforting 90s nostalgia somehow.

#859. Where do you even find some this obscure shit? I listen to this exact type of music all the time and I have not once heard of this guy. Not that I think my musical taste is the be all end all of what is quality, but I feel like if I have never once in my life ever heard him mentioned, it makes me wonder where you find these "must listens" that were put on this list. 3/5: it was fine though.

Alright

6/10 – Decent

It’s not bad, I can see why Michael Stipe likes it

Nothing very special or memorable. Generic rock.

It’s fine but not my fav. I think it’s a touch boring

3,5 stars. I do really like certain songs on this album, and will definitely start listening to this band more, but I don't think this is the BEST album ever made, an enjoyable one though.

3.5⭐️/5 02.05.2026

Nice enough on in the background but not much jumping out at me. Very 90s. I can see why Michael Stipe likes them - a bit REM reminiscent.

Another one that I'm not really sure why it's on this list. It's ok I suppose

best song: jupiter and teardrop worst (2): america snoring, the hook feels like im in a mustang with my snarky girlfriend watching a movie in an outside theater on top of our car and the sun is halfway to slumbering and its the 80s Nothing crazy though, just acoustic strumming and lousy drums with mid vocals

i like it but not that much. It offers nothing different. Classic rock stuff. Except i love robotic voices in first song. Its like intro of Iron Man - Black Sabbath.

I liked it. Very Neil Young coded.

A mediocre ok album

3.23 Best 5⭐️ song = “Fuzzy”

Another album I forgot about while I was still listening to it.

3 out of 5 Not bad at all. Classic 90s sound; shocking that I have never ever heard of them. Pretty good jams.

At least we know where Ryan Adams got all his songs from. Some really good songs on here, but a few of em are a bit too 90s for my taste.

Zzzquil in musical form. I guess it's not that bad and maybe I'll listen to it again to see if I missed anything but "fuzzy" is far too good a description of this one:

I've already heard plenty of "guy with acoustic guitar singing in a voice so raspy you want to offer them a glass of water" music from the nineties, thanks. Also, what's with the Boomer selfie on the cover?

It was ok. Pretty unique for a mid 90s album, but not exactly in a groundbreaking or interesting way

It’s no big red letter day.

Sonaba bien

Not hating this at all. I’m digging the song soft wolf tread. Interesting stuff on here. I think this coming out at the time of grunge probably helped this miss mainstream success. Some cool stuff here. Warrants a 3.5 but rounding down unless I get blown away on the second half of the record. Yeah rounding down.

An artifact of its moment. You can hear its influence - or the influence of the same inspirations - throughout mid-90s alternative rock. It's not bad and what you can hear of some of the lyrics are provocative and challenging dominant narratives on some American historical subjects. Not spectacular though 3.4

= the Beatles

I think wikipedia really undersold this album, it said country on there so I had pretty low expectations going in. I was presently surprised though, this was a really cozy and fun album. I think it's maybe a little underheard, but I think its albums like these that make this whole project fun. Favorites: Fuzzy, Wish You Well, Dixie Drug Store

Yeah, good

Honestly, this album serves as a bit of a Rorschach test for your tolerance of 90s alt rock. It’s got a warm, “fuzzy” atmosphere that sits somewhere between grunge and Americana, think R.E.M. jamming with Jeff Buckley. Grant Lee Phillips has a voice that really carries the record, and tracks like "Jupiter And Teardrop" and "Dixie Drug Store" are genuine standouts that pull you in. However, I can totally see the complaints about it being a a bit boring. For every moment of atmospheric brilliance, there are stretches where it risks blending into the background as pleasant, but forgettable, noise. It teeters on the edge of being soporific. If you’re in a moody, autumnal headspace, it’s a hidden gem, but if you need high energy or sharp hooks to stay engaged, it might just put you to sleep. A solid, if slightly sleepy, 3 stars.

This sounds a bit generic, and I can hear echoes of mid-70s Dylan and a bit of Lou Reed in here. Nice enough stuff, but on an album I really needed to hear.

Love the vibe and feel of this one. It tickles the alt rock country part of my brain. Not sure why it was selected for this list, but it fits squarely in a genre that I really appreciate. Still, it faded into the background pretty quickly for an album on this list. 5/10

Never heard of the band before. I was expecting some dull acoustic album but it ended up being decently enjoyable. I liked Soft Wolf Tread most

lot of derivative David Bowie bits on first listen. I thought a couple were covers at first. The voice has a ton of Michael Hutchence from INXS through out

It was fine

Totally unaware of the album / Artist. Good listen. Probably will never listen again unless it pops up on its own somewhere on my path.

Was not as bad as I was expecting. Pretty accessible to me for "country", decently enjoyable to listen to and felt like a mix of many different influences which was kinda cool. It didn't really grab me though.

Not bad. I understand why Michael Stipe liked these guys so much. My fave? Nah -- but still a pretty decent outing.

Another dudes who should not be vocalists are the vocalist album. There are moments on here where he sounds phenomenal and there are times he tries to get up there and sounds like Bob Dylan was shot. Pretty indifferent overall, it’s not bad it’s not something I’d return to.

It’s fine but kind of forgettable

I only knew the somg Fuzzy from earlier. That song is really good - the rest of the album is also pretty decent.Almost a 4, but not quite.

It was okay. I liked some of the themes but it was a bit slow and hard to pay attention. 2.5/5 Probably won’t listen again
