Reviews (page 4 of 7)
There's some good stuff, but quite a few misses. The fact that this is specified as the re-released Platinum version (with the 6 extra tracks) helps because all the remixes are a level up.
Ok
Surprisingly good, not my type of music at all but a good example of it
It’s ok. To be very honest not too catchy for me. Her runs are pretty good. Good production and arrangement. Overall an ok album. A bit too long.
I’m fairly certain this is the first time I’ve ever listened to a full album of Beyoncé’s. Very sexual, very empowering for women, and has a couple bangers. It’s not my favorite album I’ve heard on the list but it also wasn’t bad at all. I’m somewhere between a three and four but since there’s no Crazy in Love or Single Ladies on this album I’ll round down.
I like many Beyoncé songs, but I had never listened to a full album before this. When I first looked up this album, I didn't recognize any of the songs. Now I understand why. I like many parts of many songs, but I don't think there's a single song that I really liked as a whole. Her singing style occasionally annoys me and I could do without all of those random vocal runs. 3/5 I find it wild that I gave a Christina Aguilera album a 4 but a Beyoncé album only a 3. Favorite song off the album: the remix of Flawless with Nicki Minaj (mostly for Nicki)
This album and its surprise release in December of 2013 were the moment Beyoncé became the untouchable cultural icon many people still consider her today. That status is, to put it lightly, completely and utterly overselling Beyoncé as an artist. Sure, she is a great singer, but the music is just above average Pop and R&B. More interestingly, there was no build up to Beyoncé attaining this position. Her previous two albums were recieved in a lukewarm fashion and this one was hailed as some kind of masterpiece pretty much out of nowhere. Don't get me wrong, this isn't a bad album, it is her best in my opinion, and nowadays is not as obnoxiously overrated as its inconherent follow-up Lemonade from 2016. The good moments here a pretty great, like the very (very) 2010's sounding "XO", to the heart-wrentching miscarriage lament "Heaven", but for the most part this type of R&B melodies (if you can call them that) do not stick with me. For some reason, this released seemed to have tricked everyone into thinking something that simply isn't true. At the time, it almost tricked me too. Key tracks: Pretty Hurts Drunk in Love XO Heaven
Not my cup of tea but not a bad album
Beyoncé is a gifted and talented artist working in a genre that doesn't resonate well with me. The album sounds great, it is exceptionally produced, and it is musically enjoyable. I know I am repeating myself, but I don't think I am the audience for this album and it doesn't transcend its target audience into the world of empirical greatness.
This wasn't bad. Not sure if I'd listen again, but could see why people are drawn to her music. 3/5
Bring back side parts and the grapefruit method. #2014 #yolo
Horny
The production was excellent and I liked a lot of the songs, even beyond the singles. It went on a little long but never hit the "boring back half" that so many albums suffer from.
The "Yoncé" music video was very formative for me when it came out. It was a bit of a bummer when it was merged fully into "Partition" on the album. It's interesting, too, to think about how "***Flawless" was received by Buzzfeed etc. in 2013 because it has the quotes from Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie interspersed...really the perfect time for a #feminist message and it took over my tumblr feed for probably a solid six months. All of that said, I spend at least a third of the time that I listen to this album wishing I was listening to Lemonade instead. The songs here are good but the album as a whole is just better on Lemonade, in my opinion.
Surprised I’d never heard a single song on here. Must’ve been influential as pop music still sounds like this, it was alright but not for me
Wildly overproduced and a mish-mash of braggadocio pop tropes...still, damn that lady can sing and dance.
muziek melodie aardig zang gaat er rommelig doorheen
Beyonce is not the worst artist of all time, like some people think. Beyonce is not the greatest artist of all time, like some people think. She is simultaneously over and underrated. Beyonce is okay, she makes generally decent music that is incredibly catchy, and she is a master at that. This is okay, nothing more, nothing less. Except I love the way she says "surfboard" Best Song: XO Rating: 5.5/10 Stars: 3
Dour, sparse, boring. Maybe this was pop music in 2013 but it hasn’t aged well. Stripped of context it’s just dull
Ehon
Yall hate this just because it's Beyonce 💅👑🐝 like stop overreacting
Some really good tracks, but I'm just not that into Beyonce
solid and i get why people are down with her. i find Beyonce to be bland, boring, over produced and a bit LCD. GREAT entertainer - live, sure. this bored me.
The track, "Partition," is not bad. I like the beat.
According to wikepedia, this album did particularly well because of the short story videos. Maybe it is because I didn't watch them, but I didn't see anything special in the songs. They were OK, I preferred the remixes with the exception of Nicky Minaj
3.25 Queen B, not for me. Respect the craft tho.
guess who's jealous....BEYONCÉ
beyonky
Уважаю, и это хороший альбом, но у нее будет сильно лучше. Лучшая песня - Partition.
You're so focused listening to 10 straight minutes of Beyonce singing about fucking and getting eaten out that your coworkers need to throw something at you to get your attention. This is not a 10am album.
I don’t mind a bit of Beyoncé and I enjoyed this. Not my usual listen but it was good. Have to say though cooking dinner with no clothes on is just an accident waiting to happen….
Some good stuff. Some same same stuff
Skittles, Cherries and Breasteses, Oh My! First time listening to one of Beyoncé's albums. I was impressed by the variety in the music and the skillful way she uses her voice. It was actually better than I expected.
A good album, I liked Drunken in Love, Superpower and Blue the most.
A bit bloated and not quite as good as what was to come, but still has some great material
…What? Honestly, better than I imagined before
She's a terrific singer and a world class performer. and from the book length wikipedia articles about this album and her next, Lemonade, she clearly means a lot to a lot of people. But I just can't get on board. It's much funnier to imagine the dozens of people on the credits of these songs crammed into the studio at the same, cheek to cheek, fighting over the controls on the console, or the 1 pen. It's much less funny to realise that all her horny songs are about having sex with ugly ass Jay-z. 3 Stars.
I've never listened to any of her albums. It's not what I expected. There's a wide range on many levels. She's genuine and authentic. I can see the appeal.
There's some great production here. Plus some catchy pop, I guess I can see why it's on here... I'm not listening to disc 2, only the original release tracks.
This album is not bad, I like some of the songs but some of them aren’t that memorable to me or aren’t really my style
That's not my taste in music - But ok
Haunted // Drunk in Love // Blue
Kinda bloated, a lot of the middle parts really sounded exactly the same (lyrically and sonically). wasnt terrible but still think shes overrated. Good pop/rnb mix that i liked at the beginning
Meh. Boring but sounds nice.
-this one’s pretty great, actually. my first time hearing a full Beyoncé album, i had no idea she was so good at atmosphere -i was gonna give this a 4 but imo it’s VERY front loaded and kinda lost my interest toward the very end, so 3.5 for now. that could change ig. but my gooooddd those first six songs… chills. -Favorites are Haunted, Blow, and Partition
Didn't get a single focused listen through (listened a couple of times but interrupted and distracted.) definitely want to give it more chance. There is something about her voice that (unfairly) signposts to me that this is peak pop and therefore hasn't really been made with art in mind and isn't worth my focus - want to avoid preconceptions like that for this project so want to try again.
This wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. For the most part, it’s a pretty cohesive album all the way through, especially considering how many different producers were involved. What really gave me something to connect with was the production and overall vibe. It leans heavily into an electro ambient soundscape layered over smoother, modern trap beats. There’s even a section where she experiments with chopped and screwed style production, which I usually enjoy, but I didn’t think it worked here. That style just doesn’t belong in polished pop music, and it felt out of place compared to the rest of the album’s sound. Overall though, for a massive pop release, it was pretty solid.
Clearly, she is talented. However, her music is not my cup of tea.
I don’t really like Beyoncé’s whole deal but the production makes this a kind of ear candy that’s not unenjoyable. The sexy parts are fun too.
There's a few good ones on here but tbh I don't really get beyonce... except for the renaissance album obvs.
Some goodies but not her best
This one was OK. Always makes me wanna dance, but I often find the lyrics a little lacking
Fine for what it is, but not my thing
Fav: Pretty Hurts Least Fav: Blow Beyoncé’s voice is so good as usual, but I think this was the wrong album to showcase her talents. She needs at least 1 more
Pretty good album, doesn’t connect with me but she’s got great vibes and jams. Way too long though.
My first experience of really listening to the Queen B. She’s incredibly talented, great vocals and nice flow on the raps. The production value is off the charts & the rhythms are varied and interesting. But the subject matter —lust & drama— is for a younger crowd. Also, it doesn’t sound very empowering for women, which is interesting coming from such a powerful female presence. I love her voice and rhythmic intuition, but i’m not likely to listen to this whole album again. It’s a 3.
I went into this convinced I was going to like this album and buck the trend of the boomer haters on this album - unfortunately that was not the case. The production value is as good as you'd expect for the corporatized pop at the time and Beyonce has a great voice. I started out appreciated the darker and more dramatic pop feel, but it tires out so fast. This album really suffers from a lack of variety. It's got the singles that were all hits at the time and those are pretty good, but the rest of it is just tired and repetitive.
Favorite songs: Drunk in Love, 7/11, ***Flawless, XO, Blow, Pretty Hurts Least favorite songs: Haunted, Superpower 3/5
I haven't listened to this in maybe 3/4 years after being a regular listener in HS and college. I'm specifically listening to the platinum edition, which I correctly remember being much worse than the standard edition. Even the standard track listing is more bloated than I remember. Pretty Hurts - Partition remains an elite run, and Haunted is probably still my favorite B song. But god, Jealous - XO just bounces me so hard, and XO has become one of my least favorite of her singles in recent years. Its highs remain high, and its lows remain low. God 7/11 is objectively an awful song but that shit goes HARD. 7/10
Not bad. Not essential either, in my opinion. 3? 3.
3.4
Some bangers, but they didn’t carry the team. 3?
I heard bits of Single Ladies and a couple other songs, but I've never actually given Beyoncé a chance and listened to her stuff. Not sure where this sits in her discography, but it was pretty good.
Beyoncé's voice is one of the greatest there has ever been, and there's no denying it, but I think an 1 hour and 8 minutes is a bit too long, specially when the greatest songs are in the beginning, offering some weaks tracks after these ones. I'm not saying that these are bad songs. They're very decent, but they don't come as powerful as the first bunch, which makes this album harder to get through.
I've never sat down and listened to Beyonce much, this was fun, lots of sex and booty lol. A few real bangers on here. Always glad to hear JayZ. Flawless was really good.
Not my style but she’s the queen for a reason, and there are some absolute bangers on here.
Beyoncé has a phenomenal set of pipes but there’s something about the production of this that makes it sound really flat Can’t hate Beyoncé but absolutely nothing stood out either
pretty good
Way better than i expected
Was surprised here. I never really gave Beyoncé a chance, but people seem to love her or hate her. The album may be produced, but you can’t deny its good production. I kinda felt like she wasn’t the most interesting part of her own album. Anyway, I was getting into it for sure, but 1.5 hours is far too long
Way more horny than thought it’d be. It’s got some bangers, but it’s got its share of duds too. Supposedly there’s some videos that go with this but I’m at work and can’t watch them. I’m sure they would elevate this tho. Musically it’s definitely a product of its time. So produced. But would this work as well otherwise? I’m not so sure.
Not much to say other than Beyonce is talented but I won't be back
I've never heard either of the Beyonce albums on this list. This one way pretty wildly inconsistent - there were some tracks I really enjoyed and some that were pretty big flops. I think it probably balanced out as a 3. I was surprised at how few songs I'd heard - I knew the name Drunk In Love but had never listened, so I actually only recognised XO.
I wonder if this was included because of the companion short films. It’s an enjoyable listen, but I feel that I may have missed the intention without the visual concept.
= the Beatles
I saw this album draws haters and lovers. I agree with both. She has a great voice and can make good music, i liked the cowboy Carter album. But this one has messy compositions. I guess the wealth of collaborations killed any consistency for the album. She should try less hard to be original and just make good music.
I like getting an album like this recommended. It gives me a glimpse into the type of music that normal people, who are in-tune with culture and trends and that sort of thing, are into. Granted, I’m like 12 years behind the curve on this one, but Beyoncé is still relevant in 2025, so it’s kind of like putting a piece of a puzzle into place - except I have little interest in ever finishing the puzzle. Maybe in another 12 years, I’ll get around to hearing the country record she recently put out.
One's final indifference to this record, despite their being a good bit to like (at least theoretically) is likely a function of not being the target audience. One senses there is authentic emotion here but it feels buried under heavy slathering of production gloss and off-putting celebrity aura, which makes the whole thing feel massively synthetic. "Blow" is cool enough and "Rocket" also, but they are both undone with needless filigree and excess. One likes some of the boldness but less would have been so much more .... too much ego and posturing (which she seems to think necessary to stand up to the boys – see the triumphalism of "Bow down, bitches" and the own-her-own-sexuality challenges of "what you gonna do with all that ass") suck a considerable amount of the potential soul out of the music. Rounding down because what else to do for the woman who has everything.
Not really a fan. Came at it with an open mind and...it's fine I guess? Pros: Coming after a long run of 70s rock, it was so refreshing to hear something different. Production is great. For something over a decade old, several tracks still stand up today. Partition is an absolute certified banger imo. She clearly has an incredible voice, and it's used like a weapon. Haunted, in particular, suggested something really different - rap, anger, historical awareness. I'd like to hear more of this from her as she matures as an artist. Cons: Some very, very dated production - pretty hurts immediately dates it as an opener. The faux-feminist politics irritated me. Don't open with a song criticising the superficial nature of society and then spend the rest of the album promoting the same standards you just criticised. Sing about sex, enjoy your sexuality no problem - but Jesus, there's like 6 back to back tracks purely about fucking, and so much of it just felt like male gaze wish fulfilment. It got really fucking boring. Speaking of which, how do you make such a dull song with Frank Ocean? For such a supposedly personal album, it felt a bit 'focus group written by committee' in places. Conflicting views. I see why it's important to some and can't complain about it being on the list. From what I've heard of Lemonade, perhaps that might be more to my tastes?
for the sake of time, i'm only going to be rating the original tracklist Pretty Hurts - 2/5 Haunted - 4/5 Drunk in Love - 3/5 Blow - 1/5 No Angel - 2/5 Partition - 3/5 Jealous - 2/5 Rocket - 2/5 Mine - 2/5 XO - 1/5 ***Flawless - 4/5 Superpower - 3/5 Heaven - 3/5 Blue - 4/5 Average score: 2.5/5 (rounding up for production) i'm no puritan or anything, and i don't mind more explicitly sexual songs when they're done right, but i was unimpressed by how much this album mentions sex. i'm halfway through the album as i'm writing this and i feel like i've pretty much heard all there is to hear about her riding and throwing ass i had higher hopes going into this that there'd be a little more empowering messaging besides sex, but i suppose the saying "sex sells" applies here. i will give her a bit of credit with the last 1/3 of the tracklist, those songs were more up my alley i wouldn't call myself a Beyonce fan, but she's obviously a talented artist and her production has always been top-notch. i just think she's released far better material since this album that could've been showcased on this list
Great album with some legendary tracks. A little long for me but still enjoyable. 6.4/10
I know I’m supposed to love this album… but it’s just ok…
They call her Queen B for a reason. Kind of awkward listening in on her discovering sex, but hey....
71% Best: Pretty Hurts; Blow; Blue Must-Hear? Nah
A triumph of presentation over content. (That said, Lemonade is good. Which isn’t quite the question being asked here…)
This is one of these albums where I'm going to put my "objective" hat on because this R&B is really not my thing but I also appreciate it has quality. Not 5* quality - it's just not creative or novel enough and it doesn't move me very much. Not sure how involved Beyoncé was in the songwriting either. BUT she can definitely sing and the album is quite varied. Lyrics aren't daft. Beyoncé is also a role good model too. Actually, I ended up liking this album more then I though I would. It is a totally un-cool album but I don't care. My enjoyment of listening to this is a 2 but if I were an R&B fan I could easily see this as a 4. There, a 3 it is. Beyoncé is alright!
There are better Beyoncé albums.
Fattar faktiskt inte storheten. Det är väl ... ok. Så är jag iofs ingen R&B-kille. Trea.
Not my thing but bonus cause 7/11 is a banger
Some of the singles are good. Not a type of music that I have a lot of experience listening to so I don’t have any opinions.
A solid album that definitely felt its length by the time I reached the end. I enjoy playing the hits more than I enjoy listening to this one cover to cover. Favorite Songs: Partition / Drunk in Love (Remix)
A redefining record for Mrs. Carter. I mean this in the most objective way possible. It sounds very much of its time, and that's a testament to the fact that this helped define it. For such a front-facing r&b/pop artist to embrace alternative sounds is admirable. It's an enjoyable lap for Beyonce fans, but I found myself wanning slightly from Mine through Flawless. Otherwise, a bombastic, blended offering from one of the greatest stars in entertainment history. Also, shoutout to the user base. Y'all really hate music made by black people until it's co-opted by white people and then you think it's good music in retrospect, but you still prefer when the white people do it. For example, only liking a song because John Mayer covered it, but still liking the John Mayer version more. But hey, at least you're consistent. 7/10 Favorite Song: Rocket/Superpower/Blue
7/10 Good album by a great artist. One of her better albums but probably not in my top 3 from her. It’s very good when it’s good but there’s a lot of fat that could be trimmed on this one.
There are a couple really amazing pop songs in here and it starts off strong, but it just isn't consistent enough to be a classic. I appreciate Beyonce pushing herself into new territory with this album, but she did it much more successfully on Lemonade.
Haunted beginning rapping bit sounds like GKMC era Kendrick. I really like the more rap and R&B ones, rather than the straight pop ones. THE SAMPHA FEATURE. why does he always have like a 3 second verse and always hidden. Also not too keen on the corporate clothes shop pop ones, but there's actually not too many. The singing is obviously amazing, but I feel like it can be too overproduced at times with the overdubs, but I guess it is a pop song. Favourite songs: pretty hurts, haunted, drunk in love, partition, jealous, flawless (and the remix), blue Overall around 6/10
I liked it fine - I have heard a good amount of these songs in one place or another since its release. I think some of the less-popular songs on the album aren't as great as the big hitters that remained (like Drunk in Love), but still a solid album overall. Not usually my type of music, but fine.
an impressively average album
Listened to the extended version. Hit or miss on the songs. I had not heard any of these songs which surprised me as I would have thought I’d at least know a single from any Beyoncé album especially one on a list like this.
This is Beyoncé's horny bad bitch era, and I honestly love it. She's singing, she's rapping. She left the pop category, and started making her own. I, admittedly, didn't dive in to listening to this full album until after her Coachella performance (years after this released), but "Drunk in Love" was inescapable. I was also late to Lemonade, but once I went there then I began to dig more in to her discography, and have kept up with her new releases since. This isn't my favorite Beyoncé album, we'll get to that one later here I'm sure. It's actually not even my second favorite - but she produces hits and banging tracks. Tempted to rate this higher just to contradict all the 1-star haters of the Global Reviews here. My fave track: "Partition"
I really like the Sacha Fearce album but struggle to find any standout tracks on this on. My partner loves Beyoncé and she never listens to this one so what does that tell you?
Bey +
Don't usually read the wiki before listening to an album, but I did this time. I was completely floored by the amount of people that has been working on this. Some songs seems to have up to 10 different writers and producers on it, absolutely ridiculous. Regarding the album itself, I must say that I don't quite understand the hype around Beyoncé? I mean, she is a very good singer for sure, but apart from her active female support drive (which is not her music per-se), I don't quite see what she does that no other R&B does. But to be fair, it is quite clear to me from listening to this that I don't really understand R&B either, so could just be that. The groove of 'Blow' really stood out and is my favourite song of the record. Other than that I had a hard time finding any songs that didn't just flow over my head as something generic you'd find on radio, unfortunately. Totally not my jam, but even with this in mind, it didn't feel particularly revolutionary. Solid 3.
Had somehow never actually listened to a whole Beyoncé album other than the country one, which I thought was kind of meh. This one…I really liked a few songs. But I wouldn’t listen to the whole album again. Felt like too much of a mixed bag to me.
The highs are dizzying, the lows are mediocre
decent sound, probaby a 3.5, some of the lyrics are a bit crude.
Nice, but I like more her recent work
Better than I was afraid. Well produced.
3.5 stars, she is very talented and the album seems well produced. Just not my type of music
XO was one of my favorites. Execution was fine on this album, but nothing else really stood out to me.
1h30 de Beyoncé c’est… correct? Mais genre, tu retourne pas remplir ton assiette mettons
Loved hearing the childhood dance competitions interspersed with her songs.
solid pop album
I am always okay to admit when I just don’t “get” an artist, and I am never really going to “get” Beyonce. I am a straight white guy and her music is not really for me. This album is solid, certainly well-made, but stinks way too much of 2010s pop trends and polish. Still, this is an interesting album since you can see the perception of her transforming from pop-soul diva to Serious Artist Making Serious Statements. Her own conception of herself seems to be changing in the same way—I don’t know why else she would include a whole-ass excerpt of Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie giving a talk on feminism. The transformation would solidify on Lemonade, but it is kind of funny to see an early draft of it on that song, where you have her trying to mash together serious commentary on women’s worth with her roaring “I’m the shit, bow down bitches.” I guess for a lot of people it synthesizes perfectly… but again, not really for me. Best song: Blue
Beyonce, not listened
Drunk in Love is a comedy masterpiece: surfboart? Breastesses! An incredibly 2014 album, I get why it’s on the list - totally changed the game with the surprise drop, made feminism cool, and had a gargantuan cultural impact. If I had my way I’d probably take this off the list and replace it with either Lemonade or Renaissance which knocked it out the park. Anyway, WE TEACH GIRLS TO SHRINK THEMSELVES, TO MAKE THEMSELVES SMALLER 🗣️🗣️🗣️ Favourite Track: ***Flawless Least Fav Track: Blow
Oh look, it's underground star and little known songstress Beyonce Knowles. I gather she got all the world's best producers to live with her for a month and this is what they came up with. It's good and all, but the Beatles got shoved in a recording studio for 12 hours without any warning and produced Please Please Me, so maybe streamline your practices Bey?
Not looking forward to this one. Well it’s not what I expected, not saying I liked it but it felt familiar. It is not as poppy ask would have expected. I know now, I think i may or may not have heard many of these songs at a strip club. It’s fine - the girl can sing.
Not necessarily my favourite Beyonce. It's just not as memorable as some other albums--only a few real standouts. It's not bad, it's just not as great compared to some of her other albums. (4 known / 5 new)
Not my thing but an icon.
Queen B had a great voice and voice control, no doubts about that. The production is great. The music is not for me.
Damn, Beyonce! Legendary Houstonian singer :D I only really remember 7/11 and Haunted from this album which a friend recommended to me, curious to see how it is! Interesting to see all the Jay-Z references but didn't he cheat or smth? I don't know any public gossip. Holy horniness 💀😂 Rocket hit me like a truck but the more I listen the more I like it, it's pretty sensual and that climax (pun intended) is pretty evocative. Didn't expect the Instagram line and the comfort she describes is great. Mine has a great beat and some lovely vocals by her! Drake is also here. Flawless is the best damn song so far, great (and still relevant) message, GREAT beat and of course an H-Town shoutout :) The switchup is great too, a theme on this album I find. Frank Ocean is here too?! It's like he's dropping music again! 😍 (Still gotta listen to Channel Orange, I loved Blond(e) though.) The Flawless Remix has some sick videogamey sounds. I'm pa rumpa rum pumpin on your stomach, Kanye wth 😭😭 I know she's a legend, maybe it's just cause this wasn't the mood I was expecting but right now this is like a 5/10 for me 😭 Vocals and instrumentals are standouts.
I was still on Tumblr and Twitter when this album was surprised dropped into the world, and that's all anyone was talking about for weeks. So I, of course, listened to it - and honestly, it was... fine? I personally don't really get the hype around Beyoncé. Like, I understand her significance in terms of being a Black female pop star who's uncompromising in her vision for her music, but I think the "Queen Bey" thing is massive overhype. Anyway, l think "Lemonade" is Beyoncé's best album and should've been the one on this list. This album is fine - I appreciated the chance to listen to this album again - but I think "Lemonade" is a more consistent, focused album with better ideas. Some of the songs on this album were just... bleh. There were too many underwhelming songs about sex. Favourite tracks: Pretty Hurts, XO
An extreme talent, with an incredible voice and a flair for the presentation. She excels at these, but the music can become tired and shallow. The production value is high and the hooks are catchy, but the themes are cliche. This album starts of with vivid discretions of having sex with Jay-z, then it shifts to complex feelings of love which I got more in then with. Overall, counter to all of the haters this is good music, but not timeless. Beyoncé is timeless, but not allll of her catalog.
3.5
She really is great....this album is not her best in my opinion tho. Also a bit long.
Some unique sounds, but generally generic songs.
Solid 3 stars, it was fine.
Man so many of these albums I enjoy until they start singing about sex in lurid detail and then I just find it a bit icky. That Ike Turner line was in fucking poor taste. And can we leave Monica Lewinsky alone? Drake? Ew. This is just an album of poor taste. That being said the music is pretty good, if it wasn't for the stupid childish lyrics a load of the time it'd be a decent album. Then we had certified lover boy
Beyoncé
I like Beyoncé, I appreciate Lemonade as a visual piece but when just listening to the music it misses that narrative device.
Good, but not my thing
Um bom album de pop. Gosto muito da Beyoncé, mas somente Blow me pegou. Mas eu ainda acho meio estranho ela fazendo back-vocal para ela mesma.
I had trouble connecting with this album, but did like a few songs, especially the one about waffles.
I’m indifferent about this. I feel obligated to like it but… I just don’t. One of the things that turns me off is how horny it is. But I have no problem with horny when a male artist does it? Time to talk to my therapist about my internalized misogyny again I guess.
I think her massive appeal and commercial success is more attributed to Beyonce the "product", rather than just the music. An above-average singer, with an above average hype machine behind her.
Surpringly good
So long….i liked it ok, but it’s a lot. The guest appearances on the second disc are good, Minaj and Kanye.
Definitely not my favorite of Beyonce's records, but still very good. There is a ton of great production and mixing on here to pair with her incredible vocals. However, as a straight white man, I can't say that the themes of this one really resonate with me. Favorites were XO, Superpower, and Pretty Hurts
One thing about Beyoncé that you can always count on is her albums always sound very well produced and polished. Probably a side effect of having many of the best producers in the business at her disposal. Her voice is good and the songs are pretty good, but the inclusion of this album over Lemonade baffles me. This one is also just a touch on the long side. Highlights are Pretty Hurts, Drunk In Love, XO, and Superpower.
Beyoncé is an incredible talent of course, but there were too many boring as hell songs in between the good ones.
Reviewers here seem really mad this this album doesn't allow them to sustain the fantasy that music isn't a commodity. This is an industrial cultural product with the full force of that machinery brought to bear on its production to, unsurpringly, extremely successful effect. People get caught up in the paradox that this industrial product is marketed through a narrative of the individual authenticity of the artist's voice and the delusion of an intimate relationship between performer and audience - no shit, Adorno Jr, it's pop music! Lush, polished, horny, ultra-processed pop-music that distills the latest sounds, skills, technologies and talents of RnB, Hip Hop, House/Electronica, poat-millenial indie rock, and pure-pop into a zeigeist capturing culturally dominant force that creates a wide range of moods and feelings. The corporate feminism stuff is cringey, so are the bio-pic audio snippets, and there's something inherently undignified about the word instagram appearing in lyrics though, throws me way off. Favorites: No Angel, Rocket, Mine
I like her voice. Unfortunately, I find some of her lyrics offensive.
Seems overproduced. I do feel the commercialism rather than genuine emotion. Don’t particularly like a lot of her music but she does have a very good voice.
Favorite Track: Superpower
This is a landmark album. Changed the game. The music is great, too!
A lot of people try so hard to be counterculture, that they ironically find themselves of the mainstream opinion on sites like this in just hating certain popular artists. If you want to see why she's so praised or get a taste of the appeal to the beehive, check out her Coachella Homecoming performance, as it's one of the greatest live musical shows of all time. This album on the other hand is just okay. Even the best songs often trail off with unnecessary interlude moments, which can often kill the moment. The production is overall solid, but this album doesn't really showcase how she's a powerhouse as a live performer, and so for that, I really recommend the naysayers explore how she excels there.
Self titled albums are usually statements. This one's no different. I don't feel qualified to talk about the long and interesting history of Beyoncé, so I'll skip that. But at this time she's on top of the world, releasing an album that's also a music video showcase. The issue with reviewing this album now is that the context stands in contrast to what Queen B is portraying, so I can't help but feel weird when she sings the lines 'I'm not Jealous', as the shadow of 'Becky with the Good Hair' looms over it. She levels 'are you happy with yourself?' at beauty pageants, but it almost feels like the sort of question she might have been asking herself. Still, it's a very well produced and artistically stretching album. Beyoncé raps, and her emotion runs clear through everything. It didn't feel overlong or too short. It was, ultimately, a great foundation to build this current phase of her career on. Tangent: what exactly DID Jay-Z contribute to the song 'Drunk In Love'? I couldn't hear him at all. Fave: Pretty Hurts Least Fave: Mine Strong Bad Demerit Score: 0
It feels very corporate- a brief worked out by a marketing team and then passed on for product production.
I enjoyed the sound design and the general feel of most of the music. Certainly a subwoofer-fest on most tracks. She has a lovely voice as well. However, nothing really stuck out to me or blew me away. Several songs felt overly long. Clearly I'm not the target demographic.
No questioning the talent and popularity of Beyonce. Even though there are lot of different sounds on this album, it still did not deeply resonate with me. Still, tha ambition of it warrants a 3.
Fine, doesn't move the needle for me
I'm learning I'm really not moved by this brand of diva pop. And it's unfair to pigeonhole Beyoncé, I suppose, it's clear she's an ambitious and fearless artist who seems set on making every album a message and doesn't tread the same ground twice. It's really just the trappings of the presentation that don't appeal. And by that I mean all the super-expressive singing and embellishments that get to be too much for me. I was going to rate it a 4 because this is clearly a massive piece of work, but I'm going with a 3-star to align with the enjoyment I derived from my listening experience.
Do I like Beyoncé’s music or Beyoncé’s persona? Hmm I do like Drunk in Love
5.5/10 Highlights: Pretty Hurts XO
3☆/5 10.09.2024
Two discs is a bit much. There’s no doubt Beyoncé has a wonderful voice. If I were a teenager, I’d probably be impressed with the production and range. Drunk in Love is fun. But Jay-Z doesn’t really add anything. Rich people singing about rich people problems, has limited appeal. Blow is cute. First two songs are skippable. Partition is fun, from 2 min in. 3/5
Mucho más que el pop que solía escuchar de Beyoncé.
It was good, but I think it's a little dated and not in a good way. Lemonade and Renaissance are both better than this one. Loved the hits, but some fillers on here. 3.5.
Well, that's one way to follow up Megadeth. That's also one way to mark 365 albums done for the project. I've done this for a year. Well, okay, because 2024 is a leap year, I'm counting tomorrow's album as the one year mark, so sorry Beyoncé fans. However, that is the only apology I will issue to Beyoncé fans in this review. Quite frankly, they have things pretty good. This a solid album. Like most modern pop albums, it's not really my thing, but I do respect this album quite a bit. I think Beyoncé's a pretty good singer. She adds some character to these songs. The writing isn't my favorite, but it has it's great moments in there. The production is great. One interesting thing about modern albums to me is how many producers are on there. Fortunately, I didn't really feel like any of the production on here was subpar. Then again, I'm not an expert in that regard, so take that with a grain of salt. The features are mostly pretty good. Of course, the one problem with the features here is that I can no longer make fun of Drake for not being on the list in any capacity. The songs on here are pretty good too. I will say that the idea of a "visual album" that this album kind of pioneered is really cool. I didn't watch the visuals of this album, but I'm sure they're neat.I see the appeal in this album. It might not appeal much to me, but I get why others like it. I'm not one of those kinds of people who just endlessly complain about music from the 2010s onward being "all bad" because I know that that simply isn't true, and this album shows that. Strong 3/5.
best album that starts with the letter b
2.5
I was going to ghost review this bc I really couldn’t be arsed when I saw 1hr 33mins like WHAT DO U MEAN. If Beyoncé could release this album without writing it then I would happily review it without listening to it. BUT I GOT THROUGHT IT AND LOWKEY IT WAS GOOD? PASSABLE? ICONIC? It was better than I thought at any rate :)
Not my style, but beyoncé is beyoncé. The song are very high quality but the production bases are boring
the songs on the radio are nice but i heard a million times already, nothing against queen b
I was surprised to find out that a friend of mine was a huge fan of Beyoncé, but I said to him, well, whatever floats your boat. No, he said. That's buoyancy. (Anyway. Some real highlights - Partition, Flawless - but plenty of lowlights too, and the sentiment throughout is pretty banal. Hard to care about.)
Crass
This album changed the music industry in the most monumental way since the availability of digital music. Crazy what you're capable of when you're the highest paid musician in the world. It's too bad the music didn't help to change music. It's a great passive listen, but so much of Beyoncé's catalogue overshadows the musicality of this album. Shoutout Boots though: he got a chance and took it well.
电子烟,属实一般
кажется стартом шокирующих женских альбомов, но отсюда выглядит базовым. также посмеялась над ютуб каментами что никогда доселе мир не видел такого жанрово разного альбома. вут
meh
Ihan hyvä poppislevy. Vähän ehkä turhan isoa makuuni tällä saralla. Kaipaisin ehkä jotain sellaista nyrjähtäneisyyttä, mutta ihan solid. 3/5
Kind of forgot how horny this album is. I'm no prude, but I was pretty shocked with how overt this can get. Blow in particular gave me Prince - Dirty Mind vibes. Overall this is a good pop album. A lot of the hits have admittedly worn their welcome. I don't know that I ever need to hear Drunk in Love again. And I've never loved Drake, but Kendrick really did a number on him this summer, because he's worse to listen to now. Before, a Drake feature was fine, but not something I was looking forward to. Now it's like a jump scare. Not even a bad feature; I just had an involuntary reaction when he popped up on Mine. This is the only Bey album I've heard in full, and while I do like it, I feel like her potential is much higher than this; potential she's probably already reached on Lemonade or Renaissance, which I haven't yet heard. Impressive that a pop star who's been around this long is still putting out major albums and performing at such a high level. *Heard before.
haunted was cool
Beyoncé: Can you sing a verse on my new album about our passionate love life, family and women’s sexual empowerment? Jay-Z: Imma beat it like Ike and Iron Mike
Yes it’s manufactured pop, but isn’t all pop manufactured in one way, shape or form?
Not my favorite album but some fun individual songs
This album is just ok for me. It's not my genre so I'm not going to spend the time to see if it really belongs in Apple's 100 albums of all time. I'll just listen to it once and believe all the critics and millions of people who say it is. But, Beyonce has been on top for over 20 years, nobody stays on top in the music biz for that long without a ridiculous ass ton of talent and smarts.
Favourite Song: Crazy In Love
Its okay. It was an interesting listen. Kept me entertained, but its a bit too long. The last 3 songs could've been left off in my opinion.
SHE HAS BETTER ALBUMS BROOOO (already listened)
First listen to any Beyonce. Production very good. Some nice tunes
I disavow my previous rating. Most of this is boring as hell. Bonus tracks are better than the album.
3.25
Good production. Bloated. The stuff she sings about is so boring
Maybe I’m off-base with this, but this felt like the type of thing you need to already be a fan of Beyoncé to appreciate. It didn’t feel accessible to someone like me, who is only really familiar with her hit singles and old Destiny’s Child stuff. Boring but not terrible, and a couple of livelier moments.
same song over and over again
Best Song: XO. This felt like the kind of pop anthem that Beyoncé really excels at. Worst Song: ***Flawless. I like the general theme of the track, but samples of children are really tough to get to work right, and it sure doesn't work here. Overall: It's really cleanly produced, but it also feels like each track tries too hard to be its own "story", pulling from various samples so much that it lacks any predictability or flow. You never have enough time to enjoy any particular groove before the whole track has moved on to something else.
Beyoncé is the fifth studio album by Beyoncé, originally released in 2013. This record was HUGE when it came out, so I was only familiar with the hits prior to listening to it for this project. I was honestly surprised at record's sonic variety. The producers really did their thing on this; there's a good mix of uptempo songs and slower tracks that make for a good balance. One of the things that holds this record back in my opinion is the reliance on electronic instrumentation, particularly electronic drums. I think a lot of the 2010s fell victim to that, a lot like the 80s. Beyonce's voice is as powerful as ever on here. A lot of people were complaining about the freaky lyrics saying she was in her 30s by this time and too old to be doing all that. She's fuckin Beyonce, man, she can do whatever she wants.
Not a fan of those
Not in my wheelhouse. Innocuous but almost modern bubblegum pop with lots of drum machine/techno background.
Great modern pop/R&B album, but it has lots of filler tracks.
Probably my least favorite of the Beyoncé albums I’ve heard, but it’s still very good. The majority of this album is made of absolute club hits, and they just keep coming. I always seem to think “Formation” is on this album, I feel like it thematically fits in a little better on this album than Lemonade, although obviously it wasn’t recorded when this album was released.
Damn, Beyonce. TMI.
Love this album! Her unique combination of singing and rapping is wonderful, and the variation in instrumentals makes this album relentlessly entertaining. Bordering on four stars.
Really good! Really horny. Beyonce is amazing but the songs as a whole aren't the strongest. 3/3.5!
The singles are good, but I just hear it as radio music
I found it really hard to stay interested. I’ve never liked the sound of her records, it feels flat and lifeless to me. The guitar noises on blow were the only mildly interesting thing to me. Hot take but I think she’s one of the most overrated artists of all time. And I think the featured artists on this record are overrated too (drake and frank)
It's okay. Flawless is great, Drunk in Love is pretty good despite Jay Z, Frank Ocean is a good guest, Drake is a PDF file. It's a bit dated, it has some good songs.
Why is this on Apple Music’s top 100? It’s good. But it’s just good. The pop anthem Jealousy is great, the doo-wop revival Superpower was a much-appreciated change of pace, and the penultimate Heaven gives a beautiful emotional conclusion to the album that I think Blue misses to an extent.
Let’s not kid ourselves and pretend like every Beyoncé record is a life altering. This is a good pop record, but it’s really not that special compared to some of her other achievements. About halfway through someone maxed out the volume of the bass - and that’s when this album really gets going. Other songs rely too heavily on plain electronic ideas, without offering anything new or exciting. It’s not a bad record. It’s just not as groundbreaking as people would like you to believe.
This one has some solid tunes but goes on for too long
I still don’t really understand the fanaticism. Blow in particular was a bop, but overall just fine
I don't understand that hate on this album. I've never really understood idolizing pop stars but I can accept that people do. Taken on it's own terms, this album has a ton of merit. First, the production is excellent. The queen hired top tier talent in spades and it shows. All of the tracks are multilayered with interesting breaks and changes. The balance is noteworthy for sounding just as clean in my ear buds and phone speaker as it does on my higher quality speakers. The singles off this thing are great. Drunk in Love is a banger. I was out of clubs by 2014, but I know droves of people were getting down and dirty to it. Partition is a wild ride. I don't know if I like that ride, but it's interesting at least. ***Flawless and Blue were the other standout tracks to me. Okay. Talked about the merits, now the flaws. The number of writers on this thing is obvious. It is all over the place. The standout tracks have Beyonce at the center doing the vocals that Beyonce can do (Drunk in Love) but stuff like Pretty Hurts, No Angel, Blow, Jealous feel like they could be literally any other popstar's and I'd barely blink. Mine was the absolute worst. Get out of here Drake. For people who are fans of Queen Bey, I get how the sexy tone of this album was a turning point, but I don't think it escapes the confines of the 'made by committee' pop albums to be anything special for those of us that aren't already fans. Both Cowboy Carter and Renaissance are both significantly better albums. Those albums didn't exist when this was added to the list, but I do think either of them (Probably Renaissance) should replace this one in future editions.
Not her best album, but there are some bangers. She and her writers were very horny writing the hits of the album.
Parts were good and interesting. Parts, not so much
Rithm & Blues comercial. Escuchable.
I'm sure this is well produced and she is definitely a good singer, but I'm not feeling it.
This album is such a 2014 time capsule. It’s features, the themes of self-love and new-wave feminism. The trappy production choices. I think it’s aged pretty well though, the composition and writing stands on its own especially in the most memorable songs to have come from this album. A 1.5 hour album is such a slap in the face to the listener, she just did it again with the Cowboy Carter record. I am one of the few people that has the time and attention to listen to albums at that length, most people don’t! Streaming has ruined the succinct album experience. Very solid 3 for me almost a 4.
Some strong songs but maybe because this was the platinum version with videos it all got a bit long winded and self-indulgent.
I honestly am not sure what to think here. It's obviously great and super well produced and everything. I just don't think it's for me. I love the Beyoncé hits for sure. But I think this is a solid 3.
For the praise it’s gotten, this album didn’t really seem all that special to me. Beyoncé can really sing, and this actually has songs I remember, unlike a lot of other albums, but the production is basic and the lyrics aren’t always as deep as described by critics. Overall, I still like it, but it’s not outstanding.
3.75
I'm going through something of a Beynaissance right now. I was sure she wasn't for me, for decades. But post-Lemonade -- and especially now, after the release of Cowboy Carter -- I'm really paying attention. She's certainly a versatile performer, even when I don't love the styles she's presenting. Such as on this album. This very much sounds like a 2010's pop album, and beyond the first few opening tracks, much of the rest didn't stand out very strongly to me. Beyoncé sounds great, especially when the soulful elements of a track are being accentuated. The electronic elements don't quite form a successful hybrid though, and instead will cause this album to age quicker. I recall how big of a deal this album was on release, but I think she's since outdone herself, and retrospectively, this album is just pretty decent. This could've been a 4 on a better day.
Part record, part memoir, this includes a lot of autobiographical themes and snippets about Beyonce. Good use, therefore, of the eponymous title. Music-wise, it's fine. Lots of colabs (as the cool kids call them). Very 21st Century. Cute that she did a song called 'Drunk In Love', featuring her husband. Not massively my thing, but I didn't mind it. Rating: 2.5/5 Playlist track: Drunk In Love Date listened: 19/03/24
It’s was good for background and chill music
I liked the tracks where she sang. I liked less the rap/talk tracks.
Easy listening sound.
Powerful opening track. I didn’t really ever listen to how great of a voice Beyoncé has. Drunk in love is ok but Jay-z almost ruins it all with dumb lines like “I have your breasts for breakfast.” Luckily “Blow” is a banger of a Prince track. Album starts dragging a little bit until a gem of a pop song “Jealous”. “Rocket” could be a lost song from D’angelo’s “Voodoo” (probably because that is where the sample is from. "Heaven" is a beautiful piano ballad and I loved the "Flawless with Nicki Minaj" remix better than the original. A bit up an up and down album but she does have a wonderful sound.
3.5. This album was well done and lyrics are good. The music on some of the tracks is not very compelling to my ears, however.
Gran voz pero flojas canciones. producción con todos los adelantos de los 2015.
Last album of day 1 and first album of day 2. I like a few Beyoncé songs(none of them r on this album) but I feel like she has a very big pop culture presence and ppl are like queen bey can do no wrong and I don’t really get where that comes from. This album was not really my thing, I think my fav parts were the other artists that were featured. I don’t really like the thing she does w her voice that’s not very descriptive but yeah. 5/10 capa#11
I was expecting a little more going into this since I'd heard a few of the songs and liked them, but the album had a lot of bad/ok songs with just a few standouts. 6/10
Has its moments
Ok
Was kind of excited to listen to it, put it on this morning very hungover and realized that I know exactly what it's going to be and I'm not in the mood for it
Two discs is a bit much. There’s no doubt Beyoncé has a wonderful voice. If I were a teenager, I’d probably be impressed with the production and range. But it is mostly written from the standpoint of a rich, famous beautiful woman. So, not exactly relatable. Drunk in Love is fun. But Jay-Z doesn’t really add anything. References to Ike Turner abusing Tina, and lamenting how they ruined a Warhol, are less endearing than they might think. Rich people singing about rich people problems, has never been a good look. Blow is cute. First two songs are skippable. Partition is fun, from 2 min in. Like most hip hop, the lyrics are mostly fantasy. Sex kitten Beyoncé is a character constructed to sell records. Real life Beyoncé is too busy to be grinding up in the clubs or cooking dinner naked. None of that has ever happened. Second half of disc 1 gets a bit slow with ballads. Her voice is great, but the music is dull for my taste. Disc 2 doesn’t really add much, unless you’re a fan of the guest stars. Again, Blow is cute and easy pop. Pharrell knows how to make hits. But, at this point in time, Kanye, Drake and Minaj are hard to listen to.
I'm struggling trying to review this fairly, so I'm going to divide into good/bad aspects. Good: The mixing is absolutely top notch. The guest artist appearances are spot-on. The instrumentation is really good for a (mostly) hip-hop album. There's a lot of nice variation in this so it does't grow particularly stagnant at any point. Bad: I just don't like it. Beyonce has some really good tracks in her catalog. Shame none of them came from this album. It really just comes across as a self-absorbed person writing narcissistic songs about how awesome they are. The instrumentals also get incredibly repetitive within several tracks. So while the album itself never grows stagnant, individual tracks could've used with some more dynamic development. So there ya go, that's why I'm struggling here. I guess it gets 3 stars because I feel like less does it an injustice. It's a fine album for people who like this style. I just don't.
It's like Dunkin's butter pecan swirl. Who can hate scientifically crafted artificiality?
By any measure this is a remarkable piece of work - 14 tracks accompanied by 17 videos and a slew of other bonus features, dropped as a surprise release with no pre-publicity. This is immaculately produced, with lots of interesting audio samples and flourishes, she has an amazing voice and the lyrics are interesting, but polished pop isn’t really my thing.
This took ages to get through - just not a Beyoncé fan for whatever reason. Some good songs, but nothing that I’d ever really go back too. The concept of a visual album is fun though. Drunk in Love (the version with Kanye too) is the highlight.
I recognize her as a fantastic singer, I’m just not a big fan of her music is all. There’s a ting of heavily overproduced sounds and beats that are mixed in (which is expected), but overall if you like her music more power to ya. 2.6
Jay-Z's rapping is trash and I'm not a huge fan of albums that are clearly an effort of a massive team of corporate song writers. Some songs were fun but this album was just okay.
Obviously she’s a powerhouse performer and colossus of the music biz etc but I’ve paid very little attention to Beyoncé’s music since Crazy In Love (which is excellent, ofc). Is anything on here as good as that? Probably not, but I quite liked the first 3 tracks, the last 3 tracks, and also Jealous and XO. I guess I like slightly sugary pop choruses with big, cinematic, bass-y chord changes, but also some more experimental production here and there? Less keen on the R&B/soul stuff in the middle, but I knew that already.
3.5
Strong but I'm not so huge on pop. Horrrrny
IDK why she's such a big deal. It was alright but nothing that amazing
I kind of like Blow
She's got talent and a great voice, but I can only handle a little of her music at a time. Thus the 3 star rating.
Rithm & Blues comercial. Escuchable.
Not my type of music and it didn't really pull me into it. It was fine, she's a good singer but ... meh.
I really wanted to like this more (XO is a song I already love), but I didn’t like a lot of the other tracks.
Nothing stood out.
Love her voice, cadence, pitch. The great thing is that it doesn't seem like she's trying too hard to be dramatic, like Christina. They're both great, but Beyonce seems more natural. but this album doesn't really have any songs that grab you.
I don't really get the thrill of Beyonce. Destiny's Child crafted some magical pop songs, but Beyonce seems to deliver more attitude and less pop. This album helped me get a bit more understanding of her approach... this definitely has some Big Dick Energy... she has got swagger. Its coupled with polished, smooth and deliberate tracks. Though i'd like something a bit more catchy and melodic, it certainly stands strong.
A bit long and samey
Many of the tracks felt like I shouldn't be listening to them at work? Otherwise, it was what I have come to expect from a Beyonce album. I think I generally prefer the production of most tracks to the lyrics, but that's okay, too. Definitely felt the Timabland production on certain tracks. Fav Tracks: Drunk in Love, Blow, Rocket, Blue
I love a bit of Bey but I’m a singles girl when it comes to her. The albums have never really done it for me. That all changed at Lemonade but up until that point I could take or leave. A track or two stood out from the pack and it was a joy to hear songs like 7/11
This album feels more about production and attitude versus music. I'm glad to have listened to this and feel like it's more about the entire product of who Beyonce is versus just the songs.
Beyonce is extremely talented and some of her songs I like. Most of this album was just hard for me to get through though
Surprisingly I've never listened to any of Beyonce's stuff beyond what came on the radio.
This album was good, one of the better modern R&B albums I've heard. Great voice, and so confident with some of the lyrics there. Went on for a long time though, could've trimmed it down. I'd like to watch the whole video to the album and see if that makes me like it more.
aktuaalisesti tykkäsin 2010-luku kaupallinen poppi marketointi kikasta.... puolet albumista kuuntelu kivikovana kun beyonce kuiskutteli rivouksia korviini... hyvin se laulaa... siihen loppuu akolaadaus.. poppipaskaahan tämähän päivän päätteeksi on. koskaan tälläsiä rupeisi kilpaa kuuntelemaan (ja pretentious herrasväen mukaan, ilmeisesti) partition
I enjoyed this at first but then it just got repetitive.
It’s fine. This is the first Beyoncé album I’ve ever heard start to finish. Seemed kind of like the same over produced song over and over again.
Good. But not mind blowing.
First time I've listened to one of her albums and it was a lot better than I expected. Some genuine good tracks here, especially at the start. A bit of filler too, and let's just ignore the Jay-Z bit and pretend it's not there
Lyrically it is pretty strong, but musically it it isn’t anything special. Of course, this is well outside of my wheelhouse so take my perspective with a heap of salt.
Liked this a lot, especially the first half of the album. Would give 3.5 if I could.
Somehow both better than I thought it would be, but also exactly what I thought it would be. For one, too drawn out.
Slickly produced with unabashedly intimate lyrics. TBH, the tone gets a little too horny at times for my taste, and that aspect if the album wears thin pretty quickly. But there are also some really lovely and heartfelt ballads that I enjoyed. The album is really well made, to the point where it feels slightly inauthentic. But it's pretty entertaining, and Beyoncé sounds like she's having a lot of fun. That's more than you get from a lot of pop artists nowadays. Fave Songs: Heaven, XO, Superpower, Blue, Haunted, Drunk in Love
Great voice and some standout beats/vibes, but not my thing.
Its a bit dated and a bit long, but it does work pretty well and the songs are fun to listen to. Altho I do realise the music is not the main reason this is here; this album was a surprise drop, which was pretty much unheard of at the time, especially in the mainstream. This album made stuff like that a lot more common. I also think its cool that every song has a music video. Reviews on this one show how insecure a lot of these classic rock dudebro's are about their music taste lol
Pop comercial. Ni fu ni fa.
At many times this felt like I was listening to an album directed at teenage girls. But at times this also felt like an album that made some interesting creative turns. By all means not an album I will continue to listen. But not bad at all 6 out of 10
I liked this album more as it went on. I think B may be the most overrated generational talent I know of, but she’s undeniably a master of her craft. Some unnecessary raunch, some perfectly placed raunch. Killer vocals and beats for her to shine. 3/5
Not that great
Eh. It's good. I just don't think I'm a Beyonce folk. The few albums I've listened to always leave me feeling like 3 or 4 of the songs were somehow Genuine? Beyonce and the rest are just trying to influence and shape the cutting edge of what is cool.
6/10
I wanted to like this, but it actually reminded me of My Bloody Valentine in that every track is soo epic and overproduced that it becomes kind of numbing and loses its impact. I listened to all one hour and 33 minutes of this though, so that's a thing.
The booming bass in this was a little off-putting
Far too self referential and wallowing in her own genius for my likes. But an amazing voice and musicality.
I've never listened to Beyonce before unless it was on the radio and I was pleasantly surprised. Not all of it appealed to me, but there some songs that I liked quite a bit.
Good album , kept thinking of new girl when I was listening to drunk in love
nostalgias a bitch
Elska þetta ekki. Ekkert slæm plata, en ég næ bara ekki að tengja við hana.
One of my favorite Beyoncé records, she do be horny the whole album tho
Pretty good. I don't get the hype. Some good songs but nothing really sticks out to me as great.
Inconfundible estilo personal con una gran voz y excelentes arreglos. Pop bailable y alegre. No es mi estilo, pero se puede escuchar en cualquier momento
Well that was a surprise! I’m clearly not her target market when she’s singing to her audience, and this is definitely not a genre of music I know. But, I actually enjoyed it a bit! She can sing, and unlike a lot of her peers, she rarely over sings which is a pet peeve of mine. A low 3 rating
Beyoncé is obviously one of the biggest artists right now, maybe ever. i never completely understood why she was SO big though and this didn’t really clear anything up. obviously not bad at all but it really wasn’t anything special. i think i might have even liked the remixes at the end better than the original songs
- This is truthfully the first time I've listened to an album by Beyonce - Some very sexual lyrics - High quality pop music but I don't vibe with Beyonce as much as some people
not the biggest fan of this one. not really the target audience for this album, and that's ok. none of the songs really resonated with me all that much and i found it hard to connect with. part of the problem i had was the production, which wasn't bad, but is a lot more clean and shinier than i prefer. overall, i thought it was alright, but really not for me.
2.5. Parts were fun. Tracks are too long and I know too much about Jay-Z now.
There really are not a lot of songs on here that would be classified as hit potential. Good and thoughtful songs? Yes, there are enough of those, like 'Haunted,' 'Partition' and 'XO.' Not just musically, but lyrically does Beyonce tell us a few thing from her mind and heart. It's not all the prettiest, but it seems at least honest. BEYONCE is a pop album with substance and never becomes superficial and Mrs. Knowles knows how to use her vocal acrobatics this time not unnervingly with those long stretches, but rather with a lot of emotion and control. The minimalist productions work very well with the vocals. And the album made a lot bigger impact on me when I listened to it though headphones. There's a lot of sonic experiences happening in the background. It's too bad that the guest appearances are of a very different quality. Where Jay-Z and Beyonce together make "Drunk In Love" maybe the best song on the album, Drake does the opposite on "Mine." It's such a lacklustre performance and song it even makes the songs around it less fun, that's how bad it is. Also 'Blue' (with Blue Ivy) and Rocket are just up to the standard that a lot of the rest of the album brings. All in all just a really good pop album with a few deep depths that bring the album down. Remove them and you would have an almost perfect diamond.
Couple good songs. Outstanding production. Committee written.
it's fine. good porn lyrics!
It is important that everyone knows that this album was a monumental release. Beyonce, one of the biggest pop stars in the world, had dropped this with no promotion, no leaks, no marketing whatsoever. Album sales were built entirely on the back of Beyonce's own fame, and it's success only cemented her as, undoubtedly, the GOAT. On the album's content, this is an incredibly sensual album. Beyonce leans into the ambience to give it a hazy feeling, no doubt trying to channel the feeling of love and desire. It also occasionally uses sound clips from milestone moments in Beyonce's life, serving as a sort of reflection on her life. This appropriately closes with a dedication to her firstborn Blue Ivy, who is the youngest person to ever chart the billboard charts. I think the consistency in quality makes it worth a listen, but to me there were never any specific peaks that I could pick out. The whole album rides a line of being just "really good" without every being fully great.
Fuckin' finally. Except I'm not listening to the platinum edition, nope, no. Sorry. Not unless I love the normal edition. Oof. Pretty Hurts. 'It's the soul that needs surgery.' That's not working for me. This feels like a late album song - side two, buried a bit, the one the artist insisted go on the album and that everybody else in the room said "Okay, yeah. Sure, I mean, you never know, right?" This is a tough place too start. Haunted takes a minute - but 'My haunted lungs'? I'm on board with that. But overall? This is not the shit. Lots of talent on display but very few moments of it are coming together. Lemonade. Bring me lemonade.
Not really my thing but pretty good still.
A really decent pop album...just not something I would ever put back on myself.
Very polished.
A mixed bag. I really enjoyed some songs (much more than expected) but didn't like others equally. Low expectations, slightly surpassed.
Identifying Beyoncé : It’s Beyoncé
I’m just not her target market. I try to approach and understand why people love it and I just doesn’t do it for me.
I like the whole thing Beyonce has going. She has a spectacular voice and some of her songs are impactful and/or catchy or otherwise fantastic. This album, though beautifully made and varied and personal, just doesn't quite reach me. I admire it more than I actually like it, if you know what I mean. I certainly *want* to love it, but here we are.
It's easy to see the world as Beyoncé's; It's easy to ignore it. In 2013, I wasn't paying attention to this album's release, and that colors the comparison to last year's Renaissance. The self-titled is an album of "mosts": There's space, mostly, solo vocals, mostly, and the lyrics orbit a single theme, mostly. That makes the project interesting, but it's not particularly comprehensive. In the list context, it's too easy to equate with later Beyoncé releases or its peers.
Sounds very expensive and overly produced, and very very explicit (for a Bey record). Plenty of good songs, but nothing really interesting going on. I didn't love it, but can understand why it is on the list.
It's Beyonce. I got nothing more to say. She is not my favorite artist, but I respect her style. P.S. Kanye's remix is the best song on the album though.
