Reviews (page 8 of 17)

Too bad about the Phil Spector part, but this was very pleasant to listen to on Xmas morning.

I don't generally love a lot of modern/secular Christmas music for whatever reason, but this album is great even if Phil Spector was a complete monster. Prior to listening to this I was under the impression that the Jackson 5 version of Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town was the best version out there. I was apparently wrong. And Darlene Love's Winter Wonderland is sublime. Then again, is there anything that she can't do perfectly?!

The best Christmas album of all time, but Phil Spector is one of the most loathsome creatures to ever slink across this earth. Conflicted feelings, but I still listen to this every year.

A delightful album that gets me in the festive mood.

Bruh it's Phil Spector, but it's pretty good.

Funny that everyone gets this one Christmas. Such classic songs, and all of the renditions just scream true Christmas. Fave track(s): White Christmas, Sleigh Ride, A Marshmallow World

Fun Christmas classics.

I’ve heard several of these “early 1960’s-sounding” Christmas songs throughout my 45 years on this planet, and never knew they were from a single album produced by Phil Spector, an album ranked as one of the greatest of all time. On my setup, it was surprising the recording quality and bass extension from this album. Not all the songs I recognized, but listening can transform you to a childhood time and place.

A collection of Christmas classics. A lot of songs from this album have become favorites during the holiday season. I think that the "Sleigh Ride", "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", "Marshmallow World" are in my opinion some of my favorite songs in this album. My most favorite track however is Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" because of her beautiful vocals and great production. Overall, this is a solid Christmas album. And lastly, of course, fuck Phil Spector.

Great Christmas album.

Still an absolute classic, still a murderer.

4/5. Not a huge Christmas person but these songs slap. The instrumentals are what really bring this home, with driving guitar and drums. The singers are great too, all providing their own styles.

Not much to say about this one really, full of classics! Had it on in the background on Christmas Day. "Baby, Please Come Home" is one of my faves.

Bara klassiska jullåtar. Några i annorlunda tappning än man är van vid. Går ju inte tycka den här plattan är dålig men hur betygsätter man en platta med blandade artister?

i mean you're not going to put it on very often but sometimes it will be the only choice

It's Christmas songs what's more to say? Well produced christmas songs but still.

Fantastic Christmas album, all the classics

Listening to this after Xmas so my cheer is gone. But this album has tons of those songs you hear in the mall while shopping for presents. Hard not to get nostalgic so I'm still gonna rate it pretty high

A great album despite the unavoidable association with Phil Spector.

As ever a well polished Spector production

This was really nice to listen to yesterday on Christmas. I was familiar with the majority of the songs.

A stunningly good Christmas album featuring that wall of sound. Can only be played for a couple of weeks of the year and Spector is a bit of a dick.

Classic Christmas record

It’s Christmas, the fact I knew a ton of these made it quite easy but after Christmas nobody will care about these songs for another 12 months, I will be kind though and give it a 4/5.

This was a great Christmas album and one I will come by to for years. I loved how it was presented to us on Christmas Day!

4.75 Vinyl

Of course I get this on Christmas day! Reviews seems to centre on: 1/ "I don't like Christmas music" or 2/ Spector killed someone 40 years later. Focusing on the music it's what you would expect from the Wall of Sound given a Christmas theme.

bem massa os fadinho natalino

From the golden age of Christmas albums and songs (Eartha Kitt, Motown, the Beatles and Phil). Yes an awful awful man but shouldn't stop you listening to this. Did you spam me this on Christmas Day on purpose 1001?

Love Christmas music, love Phil Spector's production, all around a killer album, definitely worth taking a shot at

I really didn’t expect how much I liked this. I’ve already heard most of these songs way too many times, but I really liked the production (although I didn’t really have strong feelings about Let It Be).

A bit weird in July, but very warm and fuzzy

The Wall of Sound led to some timeless music full of orchestration and richness that must've been so rare at the time. In 1963, Phil Spector was still cutting his teeth with this concept, but he was able to blend it with some of his Motown connections resulting in more than a few timeless holiday classics.

Guay para navidades. Le daría un %. Pero .... Phil Spector ...

nice christmas songs

Så bra en julskiva kan bli. Och Ronettes är ju den fräsigaste vokaltrion någonsin.

Bra jobbat, Phil!

This album is likely the most played radio Christmas album. I suspect if these songs were 5 or less years old I would think this is a five star album. Instead it's 35 and has been played to death. Still deserves four stars

One of the greatest Christmas albums

Probably the best Christmas album of all time. all iconic all amazing brilliant work Phil shame about the abuse and murder. best tracks: sleigh ride, Christmas (baby please come home), Rudolph the red nosed reindeer

CHRISTMAS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!@!!

Festive

A Fun Christmas album with iconic renditions of iconic Christmas songs

It's hard to go wrong with Phil Spector (unless you're Lana Clarkson, I guess), especially when helming an album featuring talent like the Ronettes and Darlene Love. This album is chock full o' classics; the Crystals and the Ronettes offer up what I consider to be the definitive versions of "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town" and "Sleigh Ride," respectively, and Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)" is my second favorite Christmas song of all time. The only song missing from this album is Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You," and given the fact that Phil Spector isn't a time traveler, the omission is forgivable. If there's a better Christmas album out there, I've yet to come across it.

Call him a psycho murderer all you want but Phil Spector is a musical genius. His "wall of sound" made these Christmas Songs incredibly enjoyable.

Listening to this on the 3rd of Jan isn't the greatest experience, but i'll be putting this in the stocking for next year cos it sounds great

Enjoyed it, perfect listening for Chrimbo. I think the Charlie Brown Christmas album is the best one for this time of year, but this is a great option too.

Christmas!

This was an absolute delight - packed full of Christmas classics and perfect for Christmas morning. Just the right amount of saccharine, but not too much, with a bit of reflection in there to. 4/5.

I'd rather put this on repeat than listen to other Christmas music, and often have. I guess I'll overlook the crazed murderer bit...?

This really is the quintessential Christmas album. Minus one star for the spoken word outro which I always kind of hated even before I knew about the hideousness of Phil Spector

The original of the genre

I've always thought this was kind of an amazing album from the period

Great from start to end.

Issa christmas album.

Never been a big fan of Spector's "wall of sound" production style. But hard to deny the talent of the artists he's assembled here, as well as the quintessential recordings of these classics that they produced.

Vabbè è Natale ci sta

Great album. Listened to many times, only a couple of tracks that don't really reach the heights of Baby Please Come Here

Pretty solid holiday album, even if I'm not much a holiday music fan. This one was nice though

Set the volume at 11 and blast Christmas

Christmas classic!!

Yes, classic Christmas songs. Very nostalgic and will fit in any Christmas movie soundstrack.

Good xmas mic

Christmas hits from Motown. Nice.

Fantastic classic Christmas album. Always loved this one!

Classic christmas

Turns out I already had this version of Rudolph saved. The Ronettes version of Sleigh Ride gave me MAJOR retail flashbacks, but overall loved these versions of Christmas songs. A nice Christmas Eve listen.

Inspiration for the SNL skit.

Merry Christmas

Baby boomers remember Phil Spector as one of the most influential people in the history of modern music. Me? I remember him as the wild-haired, wide-eyed guy whose murder trial lasted what felt like at least five years. I've heard a majority of the songs on this album before, and they're all exactly what I want in a Christmas song: bopp-y, fun, and featuring vocals that don't hold back. Darlene Love goes so damn hard on Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), and it's the best track on an album full of great performances. This is going to be part of my holiday tradition from here on out.

Great Christmas Soul Album with some great hits

Classic Christmas

4 Classic Christmas album.

Some great songs on here, I'll definitely make sure this album works its way into the Christmas rotation.

Fun album. You have to love Motown.

Classic

I had no idea so many of these classics were all from the same album. Favorite track: Frosty the Snowman

We listen to quite a few of these every Christmas.

Solid Christmas album

Lucky it’s December 23 😅 wouldn‘t be 4 Stars in june

Classic.

Classic

Yay Christmas music!

Lots of Xmas hits on here!

All the Christmas favorites in one album. Perfect for the holiday season.

Christmas classics, nice vocals, and full instrumentation. Solid holiday music

Wow perfect timing for this, holy shi*. This is my all time favorite Christmas album. Fun fact: Phil Spector murdered one of his wives. He also produced Let it Be, and Paul hated it so much that decades later he made Let it Be… Naked, which is honestly better. Also, Spector married one of the women on this album, I think the lead singer of the Ronettes. She wasn’t the one who got murdered tho. Anyways, preemptive 4. Update: Michael Buble can leave his pasty ass by the fire, he ain’t got nothin on this.

Rip snortin' good time

Delightful.

Wow, maybe my favorite Christmas album I’ve ever heard? I didn’t just have a good time… I had a Great Time. Phil Spektor in his prime! The Ronnettes with their most Brooklyn accents! Lots of fun sound effects and orchestral stuff. Always fun, never too jaded-commercial, always having-a-good-time-with-it-commercial. I gained a new appreciation for songs I’d heard before, it helped fill out the missing pieces of the puzzle for me with these Christmas songs I’ve no doubt heard in countless shopping experiences. 4 stars! I have been gifted.

What a great album. I know and love this one well.

Phil Spector really kills it on this one.

Phil the Thrill

Tis the season and this has some all time great holiday hits.

Great Christmas album

I came in expecting very enjoyable soul christmas classics with decent production. That's what I got. A great record.

Whilst I am catching up and cannot crying myself to listen to this album outside the festive period, most of the album is full of classics that are quality Christmas songs. I have listened to 80% of these songs during December.

Pretty fun Christmas album, it really has the Phill Spector sound

As good as you can go with a christmas album

A timely Christmas gift from the 1001 random album generator. I'm a sucker for any Christmas music.

I played this album at a dinner party on Christmas Eve and it was a big hit. Classic Christmas songs in truePhil Spector style.

My feelings on Phil Spector aside, this is a great collection of Christmas songs, mostly because it doesn't come across as a Christmas collection. The artists and production treat this like a bona fide "standard" record, the arrangements are grand, the performances are heartfelt, and the songs themselves are winners (mostly). Apparently this was released the day before Kennedy was assassinated, so Spector pulled it off the market upon release, killing the mojo it might have had in sales and in the collective consciousness; but Bruce Springsteen certainly heard it, as this seems to be the version of "Santa Claus is Coming to Town" he worked off to create his own classic rendition — sax solo and all. And give me this version of "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" over the Jackson 5's every single time.

Even a Christmas Grinch like me loves this album. Most of these versions are definitive. Minus one star for Phil being a murderer.

This had some of my favorite versions of Christmas Classics.

After I separate Artist from the Art; this is Phil Spector at the height of his genius. This is the only Christmas music I like, keep Mariah and Elvis, give me Darlene Love and The Ronettes. Classic.

Surprisingly good for a Christmas album. At least one song ended up being the definitive version that we all still hear every year, to this day, which earns an extra star in my book.

Best ever Christmas album?

Fairly solid album. It's a Christmas Album, so I think it would be near impossible for any non-Vince Guaraldi artists to get a 5

I wouldn't be upset if a lot of these became the go-to standards.

I mean, these are some great songs.

Crazy mix of the biggest Christmas songs ever and random songs that are really good but completely unknown

I liked this. It's just nice to hear x-mas music I haven't heard a million times before, and I'm pretty sure I hadn't heard a bunch of these renditions. 3.5/5

Really not a Christmas music guy usually, but these are lovely. The Ronettes are definite highlights. What can I say, Phil Spector may be a monster, but he knew how to make a song soar. B

My favorite Christmas album made by a crazy murderer. Or is it my second favorite?

Nice christmas album, well probably the nicest one in fact.

Phil Spector's style of direction and production is easily recognizable here, which makes it a different, pleasant and truly charming Christmas album.

themed albums don't seem to make this 1001 albums list very often, based on my experience from the last 235 albums. most of these songs have become, since their release in 1963, the definitive version! to me, that knowledge solidified this album's importance, even if it was produced by phil spector. his idea of using a handful of musical acts to sing several classic songs is so simple, yet it worked brilliantly. each group sings in such a charming way; it's hard not to smile when listening. a lovely christmas treat, even if the "random" generator stopped functioning properly on december 23rd.

Thanks, algorithm, for delivering this to me on Christmas Eve Eve! I’m definitely more likely to give it a fair shake during the actual season. I wasn’t familiar with this album as a whole, but when it got to going, I was surprised at how many of these individual renditions I knew. So many of these versions are absolutely iconic and permeate the holiday season. I had not heard of the “wall of sound” before, either, but after reading about it, I recognize this effect — it is certainly an iconic one! I love Christmas music, and I typically have a type that I gravitate towards — this album is not that typical type. But hearing all of this together on this album is most certainly like a warm holiday hug, and I loved every minute of it.

merry christmas everybody. classic sound.

Really good Christmas album, the ronettes songs are the best

This should be on a sliding scale by date starting at 5⭐️ from -25 to +6 days from Christmas. Then with very strict exceptions a 3⭐️. For the sake of this I’ll give it a 4.

12/23/2021 Today's Album: "A Christmas Gift for You" by Phil Spector - I have to temporarily get myself back in the Christmas spirit for this one so please pardon any lapses in judgement. This is most likely the best Christmas album ever made. Pretty much every track on here is an incredibly recognizable holiday tune performed by some of the best talent of the late 50s/early 60s. It has some of the most classic iterations of these songs that you hear everywhere during December. Overall, a Christmas staple with amazing versions of the best Christmas classics. Score: 8/10 There's a time and place for this one, but it's really that good Highlights: *List of all 13 of the most beloved Christmas songs of all time*

Songs: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home), I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus

Great Christmas album. I wish it had popped up on the list a couple weeks ago (before Christmas).

The best Christmas album ever? Great Mo-town versions of Christmas standards. I can see myself putting this on again next Christmas, but certainly not until then.

Very glad I got this over Christmas, otherwise may not have been in the mood

An energetic and playful contrast to the prim and tidy arrangements of the 50s and before. Nearly 60 years on, this album is packed with back-to-back holiday standards.

A festive 1963 album geared toward christmas pop. The coherency and technicality in its production, which is the highlight of the album, puts on display Phil Spector's ability to innovate music production norms as early as the 1960s. While impressive namely on tracks like 'White Christmas' and 'Marshmallow World', it requires backing from artists like Darlene Love to render certain tracks memorable as some fall short of that criteria.

Great festive album with all the favourites

10/13=77%

One of the best Christmas albums ever. Phil Spector was a genius, too bad he was a piece of shit.

Stabiles Weihnachtsalbum

Fine julesanger, men liker Frank Sinatra og Michael Bublé bedre

Un classico di Natale. Molto belle tutte le varie interpretazioni e 'Sleigh Ride' (che credo sia originale). Un 3 generale, ma un 4 per Natale.

Really solid Christmas album. Darlene Love's 'Christmas' is my favorite track

Merry Christmas!!

Amazing X-mas songs!

Murder connection aside, this is a good collection

Pretty good stuff. For some reason this reminded me of the soundtracks from all the mob movies by Martin Scorsese.

classic even if over-familiarity may make the songs seem cheesy

Delightful

I have listened to this many times - I love it

Excellent versions of these songs. Really liked this. Phil Spector is a dbag though.

Merry Christmas! Will listen again in a year!

Christmassy!

This was a very nice Christmas gift to listen to. Discover the life history of Phil Spector was a nice bonus (I never heard about him before), but the songs themselves were a great payoff. I hope to keep this project alive in my 2022 to-do list and these songs were a breath to get the greatest albums from the project and also to "enjoy" the worst ones which I'll never understand why they are here. Christmas songs always give me some type of hope and this album was a great piece of Christmas songs

A lovely Xmas present.

I was going to give this 5 stars for the serendipity of getting it on Christmas Eve, but when I saw my wife had the same album I had to rate it honestly. It’s got some classics on it and I will listen again, but not for a good 11 months, thanks.

Petit Papa Noël, toi même tu sais ça fait plaisir d'distribuer des cadeauuuux.... Tranquillemeeeeent en bas des bloooooooocks!! Oh Bosetti!

Great and classic sound. Obviously only good for one month a year. If i was a teenager in the sixties id roll a joint on this album

only good album they've given us so far

Fun classics. The best era of Christmas music

Great collection of Christmas classics!

Great Christmas album, nothing to dislike here except for Phil Specter himself

Of course, there's nothing more ridiculous than Phil Spector giving anyone a Christmas present as much fun as this one. However, this is a great example of the rock-and-roll Christmas sound that becomes buried in our holiday consciousness for the next 50 years.

Iiiiiiiiit's Christmaaaaaaaaaas! Chapeau for the 24th December suggestion. Having had Heart Xmas pumped into my ears solidly by more festively minded members of my household for the psst month, I must say this was a nice collection - not as whiny or as showy as newer Christmas numbers and striking a nice balance between secular and religious references. Go on then, I'll admit it. 4 stars!

A near perfect album with a creepy personal message from a murderer.

I mean you can't knock the Wall of Sound, but my reaction to a Christmas gift from Phil Spector is more "what's in the box?! WHAT'S IN THE BOX" than "ooh how lovely but I didn't get you anything"

Quality Christmas songs with that amazing wall of sound. Could be the best crimbo album

Ho ho ho

Beautiful Christmas cheer. Good will upon one and all.

This came up for Christmas Eve 2021, a random selection? Hmmm. 🤔 Merry Christmas! 🎅

These are just classics. I had no idea this album existed, and I love Christmas songs. Next year, this will most definitely be in high rotation for the holiday season. I have heard many of these here and there, but what a collection! Phil Spector was a crazy dude, but his sound is unmistakable and iconic.

A nice holiday surprise. Before, you know, he was in jail. The problem is, about half of the songs are difficult to tell who is singing. If you locked me in a room and played the Ronettes and then the Crystals, I would be hard-pressed to tell you who is who. The production doesn’t help, that wall of sound makes them sound identical. Of course, hearing Spector speak at the end is unintentionally creepy. It was a nice little album. Weird trivia: released on the day JFK was killed. I mean, it’s not like it was PLANNED. First printings are pretty rare, too. I like holiday music, but it always seems so… limited. There feels like there’s maybe about 100 songs, and they have to sound a specific way. So yeah, this was nice to hear, but I doubt I will come back to it.

Not bad for a Christmas album

Heel gezellig kerstalbum dat vooral sterker wordt naar het einde toe

I mean, it's essentially a compilation of Christmas classics. "White Christmas," "Frosty the Snowman," "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town," "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus," "Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer," "Here Comes Santa Claus," and "Silent Night" are all legendary Christmas songs lol. Admittedly, some are not classics, like "A Marshmallow World," but it is a very solid set of the "classic" Christmas songs. -Only notable/unexpected item music-wise were the pretty sick drum fills on "The Bells of St. Mary"

Solid album. Very enjoyable

Phil Spector is a monster, but this album is fantastic!

Sick of hearing these songs but it is a classic

Classic songs ruined slightly by being so familiar

Album: 5/5 Spector: 1/5

One of very few listenable Christmas albums. Perfect gift!

Catchy old pop tunes with great production. What's not to like here?

all you need all under one roof!

Its great. I've heard most of these individually and now this album will definitely be put in the Christmas rotation.

Te gek kerstalbum met sommige bekende nummers maar ook wat jazzy onbekende

Huh, this was the project's pick for Christmas Eve! Pure chance, or did the algorithm get fudged? Either way, I reckon the relevance of the date is worth an extra star from me. If I'd had to listen to this in July I can imagine it losing a star... Fave track - "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus" by The Ronettes maybe, idk

A Christmas delight

Makes you feel chipper, slots into the list well. Feels like the less-painful versions of many known songs.

Is this list random? Honestly I hope it is because that makes this even better. Great Christmas album with some of those classic radio hits I added right to my Christmas playlist. Also loved his thank you at the end.

As a Christmas FIEND and someone who enjoys this era of music a lot, I really loved listening to this and I actually listened to it this week before it even came up on this list! However, I only ever listened to this in the capacity of a Christmas album and was unaware of the fact of Phil being a convicted murderer... Also it's not my top fave ever Christmas album (Ella and Louis Christmas) so 4 stars it is.

An absolute Christmas classic. Loved it!! Every song. I think Phil S is a bit dodgy but the other acts weren't so nevermind. Great album

Was this just a coincidence that we got this one around Christmas? You can't really say no to it, it's got all the big hitters, but I was a bit annoyed cause I was listening to it in January.

nice 4/5

Merry Christmas. God Bless us Everyone.

Classic Christmas. Better than some of the really lame xmas oldies songs, but not so stylized to be distracting, or bothersome to folks who like it tradition.

This is a great Christmas Album; especially the tracks by Darlene Love are excellent. The others are nice as well, only the Bob B. Soxx & The Blue Jeans ones are lacking a little bit, and I could have done without the final track with the Phil Spector speech. Still, well worth a listen. 4/5.

Brilliant christmas classics !

High quality Christmas music

4/5. Christmas jams, Spector was talented, but literally the worst

4 stars since it’s Christmas

Great fun

Definitely above average Christmas tunes. I look the old school sound of the album which makes the holiday feel even nicer and cosier than usual. A nice listen for the holidays! 7/10

I quite enjoyed it. The updated hd version was poor though.

A Christmas classic. Skip the last song.

A collection of great christmas hits.

Good Christmas album

Glorious, bar the last, terrifying track :-)

Perfect timing. But fuck Phil Spector

This should probably get a lot more play at Christmas

Kinda sounds the same after a while, but does contain some classics!

Probably should have listened to this before Christmas! Good though, a nice change from the heavy rotation Christmas songs of the 70s/80s/90s.

Platan er mjög fín. Pródjúserinn er ógeð.

Great Christmas album, but that's all it is. No original songs or especially creative takes.

Peak Christmas music I think.

Man a lot of classics on here. Merry Christmas music adventurers

Wonderful! Oh, Darlene Love. What a treasure. PLEASE, people, please go watch the 2013 documentary '20 Feet From Stardom'.

4.0 + My go-to Christmas album!

Coincidentally I've been looking for some good Christmas music and struggling with it. Every Spotify playlist I find for rock n' roll Christmas or other types of more modern holiday music just results in crappy stuff. These are some great tunes. I could have lived without Phil Spector's creepy closing comments, but otherwise top notch. 4 stars.

I’m behind on my days so this didn’t hit me on the right day. But it’s so perfect of course for the time of year. Some of these aren’t my favorite versions, but it’s a great one. A lot of these I prefer male voices. Sleigh Ride, Marshmallow world,Winter Wonderland. Christmas are my favorites. Can’t do 5 because it doesn’t work in June.

A great album for Christmas Day!

Merry Christmas!

Classic songs

Quintessential Christmas Album

Unos villancicos típicos bien cantados.

Guay para navidades. Le daría un %. Pero .... Phil Spector ...

Try to forget that Phil is involved and this is a real Christmas cracker.

Obviously biased judging this on Christmas but I think most of these songs still hold up if I listened to them in March or august. Can’t beat the classics. Favs: sleigh ride, christmas

All the classics!

It's a Christmas album. Enjoyable for Christmas.

A punchy Christmas album with fantastic performances. I feel like that is kind of all I have to say about it.

Another Christmas spent in SHACK'S bedroom ruined.

So the ronettes and the crystals sing the tunes but for some reason Phil Spector claims it for himself. I'm going to rate this on the strength of the album and caveat that creepy, incesty, noncey killer Phil gets no praise for this. He didn't write the songs and he didn't sing them so he can fuck off.

A Wall of Sound/Christmas combo, what's not to love? It beat listening to Mariah Carey wailing on about wanting me for Christmas while I ate my Christmas dinner. I'm married Mariah, leave it out will you. You bring this up every year, you're embarrassing yourself.

This is easily the best Christmas album I've ever heard. Also the only one that I've listened to start to finish. The vocals have a lot of pop, especially Ronnie Spector. I'm a late convert to the Ronettes. And the production is very well suited to a Christmas Album.

Good classic Christmas songs

Regrettably very good

Great run time, the best that production could be from that time, the songs are classic and the groups are famous. I love how he maintains a uniform style of sound throughout regardless of who is performing the song.

Tough to rate what is technically a sampler as a "normal" album but if looking at the songs individually you have good to great reinditions of classic Christmas songs which help making this album as good for Christmas listening as a Spotify playlist

The production is impeccable. Wish I knew about this before Christmas, definitely perfect for the holidays. Special shoutout to the Ronettes. Favorite track: "I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus", "Winter Wonderland"

Wish they had ‘a Christmas song’ on this album but these are too good

THE Christmas album!

I have heard most of these before, and they are good, buuuuut the "classic" sound doesn't really make it the type of Christmas music that I listen to year round, and I DO listen to Christmas music year round.

Довольно стандартный на современное ухо альбом рождественских песен. Вполне себе создает новогоднее настроение, а что еще от него надо?

First time hearing this! Great production.

I’ll admit this one is hard to rate. Part of the appeal of a Christmas album is to enjoy them during the season, not to mention I grew up celebrating Christmas with Los Hermanos Flores instead of carols. However, the album’s relevancy even 60 years later is not lost on me. I have heard several of these renditions individually but never knew they all came from the same album. Songs like Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) and Sleigh Ride have had continued popularity on social media. The standout for me is Darlene Love. Her vocals were powerful and the most memorable. The vocals and production are a time capsule and enjoyed better on a speaker/cd player instead of headphones. Listen again?: Yes, in December

Some classic Christmas songs by 60s girl bands and Darlene Love produced with Phil Spector's wall of sound. The individual songs are fine but I can't listen to all of them at once.

Christmas music. Fantastic.

I don't like Christmas music and did not care for this album, but will acknowledge that it was well produced. That being said, this is an album I would want to OD on.

Festive

Typical traditional Christmas album. Some lovely voices. Phil Spector at the end is creepy. 3.5

A collection of Christmas songs, none of these are necessarily bad but I generally would never listen to Christmas music when its not being forced upon me in random retail stores during the holiday season. Personally don't think an album like this should even be on this list.

Even in late January I enjoyed this and felt pretty Christmassy so that's testament to how good this is. I reckon I'll come back to this in December. That said, as an album so tied to one season, I don't think I can rate it too highly, hence the 3.

The name feels hilariously ominous. I don't want any gifts from Phil Spector. Good songs though!

Maybe would have liked this more if I listened to it at Christmas... also I don't want any gifts from Phil thanks

Upbeat julestemning på boks. Produksjonen blir litt slitsom etter hvert. Høydepunkt: The Ronettes - Sleigh Ride

Not in the mood for Christmas music…

Could not find this exact album. Listened to a 2002 album: A Christmas Gift For You - A Tribute to Phil Spector. A nice old timey holiday option.

ai, então é Natal...

I didn’t like when he started talking

I know a lot of other reviewers are focusing on Phil Spector being a murderer, but let's not forget that this is a white man who is presenting a complication of works by black artists. Now I don't know anything about the murder, and maybe Phil gave these artists a fair cut of the profits from this album, but if I had to guess, I'd say that he didn't. This is a pretty solid compilation of Christmas songs, only flawed by inclusion of several speaking parts. I really don't like speaking or recitations in music.

i'm not listening to this

It's a christmas album

Festive mix of classic Xmas songs

I'm not really into Christmas music

Ronettes goated

not christmas anymore, quite a seasonal dependant album

A go-to christmas album for sure. Don’t know that I’ve ever sat through a whole christmas song intentionally before, but it was kinda fun. Fave songs: White Christmas.

A pleasant Christmas album that brings you back to an older time.

Favorite Song: Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) Least Favorite Song: Parade Of The Wooden Soldiers I don’t celebrate Christmas whatsoever, but there are so many classics on here that I can’t give this any lower than a 3.

I just dont like christmas

Great Christmas album🎄

Christmas standards with the "Wall of Sound" treatment; doesn't fail to make you smile

6.0/10

The most iconic christmas album. all the original classics! Only rating it 3 because it’s christmas songs.

Well produced Christmas songs.

This made me like Christmas music then I realised it’s produced by a murderer. Merry Christmas?

Keep rating

It’s so easy to get a Christmas album wrong because they tend to be so cheesy but at least this album picks the best songs from the Christmas canon and gives them an interesting production. The singers all have lovely voices too unlike Michael fucking Buble.

Shouldn’t have looked up Phill Spector on Wikipedia.

I am not a big fan of novelty songs, but this is quite a good classic collection of Christmas songs. Gotta give it to Mr. Phil the Killer. Probably between 3 and 4 stars. I suppose this is indeed the definite Christmas album, but then again I just don't care for this stuff.

Classic 🎄

Outside of it being produced by a convicted murderer, A Christmas Gift for You from Phil Spector is a solid holiday compilation! I appreciate the Generator giving it to me on Christmas, even if it somewhat broke the illusion of this whole thing being randomized. There are loads of Christmas classics on this thing and many of them (especially the ones from the Ronettes) are arguably the definitive versions of the songs. Darlene Love also stood out in almost all of her appearances, including “A Marshmallow World,” which I had never heard before – one of the current pop girlies should bring that one back! Ultimately, it’s not my favorite holiday album ever and I can’t really see myself putting it into regular rotation around this time of year, but I’m glad it’s on the list – Christmas music deserves some attention from critics too. Highlights: White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, Santa Claus Is Coming to Town, Sleigh Ride, Marshmallow World, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)

Great Songs: Sleigh Ride, Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) Good Songs: White Christmas, Frosty the Snowman, The Bells of St. Mary, Santa Claus is Coming to Town, I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus, Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Here Comes Santa Claus Mid Songs: Silent Night, A Marshmallow World, Parade Of The Wooden Soldiers Bad Songs:

- quais as chances de um álbum temático (a menos que não tenha sido aleatório). é uma coletânea de vários hits natalinos com ótimos vocais e produção, apesar de quase todas as músicas não serem inéditas. - a produção é interessante, o som é bem abafado e saturado, uma técnica onde a orquestra toca junta em um estúdio pequeno. apesar disso o produtor é um pos horrível.

I mean it's the classics. Phil Spector did kill someone but the songs are quintessential christmas. It's a 7/10. Doesn't do anything wrong but it's Christmas music can't be all that good.

Enjoyable enough. It's hard for me to separate what a shit human being Phil was from the music. The musicians are killing it, Hal Blaine in particular seems to be really getting his jollies. Spector's squick aside after a while the wall of sound becomes a barrage of sound to me so the 34 minute run time is just about perfect. Overall fun takes on some classics and a fitting soundtrack to getting started on Christmas dinner.

If you are curious what makes this such a dark release it is the fact that the producer, Phil Spector, is a convicted murderer who shot and killed someone in 2002. He was a very infamous producer who worked with everyone from The Beatles to The Ronettes and had built up quite a career for himself before his act of violence. Besides that very specific thing about this project, I have to say this is really solid for it being well over 60 years old. A lot of these songs are still played each and every December and it makes sense because a lot of these hold up wonderfully and perfectly encapsulate the fun festivities and acts of love that come from Christmas. Every track here is like a nice sip of Hot Cocoa, it does the job just right, and then the final track is like getting to all of the left over grain at the bottom and spitting it out because of how nasty it is. For the most part, this Christmas album is a staple that should continue to be played each and every year as it is a near perfect representation of just how lovely the season can be.

Good album overall but some of the vocals felt a little whiny.

What a sinister threat of a title

Sometimes I feel like a weirdo for genuinely liking a lot of Christmas music. I don’t actively seek it out for my own personal listening, but I enjoy it when I hear it. Having heard people say this was the best Christmas album ever and knowing how much Brian Wilson admired Phil Spector, I expected to love this album, but I don’t really hear it. The vocal performances are great and The Wrecking Crew are obviously amazing musicians, but I agree with Spector’s mentors Leiber and Stoller that his production is mush. I know how important he was for pop music, but Brian Wilson did the “Wall of Sound” way better. Usually I can separate art from the artist, but hearing Phil Spector’s voice at the end and thanking me for listening made it feel like I was complicit a crime and feel disgusting for listening to this monster’s “feelings of Christmas”. Anyway, there are some pretty decent renditions of classic Christmas songs on here, so it’s definitely a good album, just severely overrated. 3/5

Do love a bit of Christmas cheer

Sounded like the music gangsters in the movies listen to.

Wall of Sound Christmas! Above average for the genre, but still a Christmas album, kinda creepy to hear Phil Spector wish for a peaceful silent night

Essential to listen to before you die, yes, but only around this time of year.

Good for Christmas

surprising pick for best albums ever

Am I the only one who hears something sinister in all those key changes in the Ronettes' "Sleigh Ride" - in hearing Ronnie's voice straining at the top of her range, only to be pushed higher and higher and higher, over and over again? It's like Phil Spector found the perfect union of his two greatest interests - technical musical brilliance and abusing women. God, that poor girl.

3.5 c'était sympa mais un peu trop ressemblant

Standouts Frosty the Snowman Santa Claus is Coming to Town Sleigh Ride Christmas Baby Please Come Home

Fun album for Christmas. It’s hard to give Spector more than a 3.

What can you say? It’s the best Christmas album I’ve ever heard that was produced by a murderer? Your enjoyment of the first part might be tempered by the latter fact
