Reviews (page 6 of 6)
Incredibly average album. I did not care much about it.
zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
Kinda bland. This might have hit different if I’d heard it when it was first released.
This album was just generally boring. No part of the music stood out. It was kind of just a wall of droning instrumentals and vocals, signifying nothing. It wasn't actively bad, but it made me feel literally nothing but impatience for it to be over.
Entry of the bass line on "History Song" was awesome. Rest of the album was disappointing.
Meh
I have to agree with the majority. Albarn sucks.
Albarn plus others. Loved by hipsters & the music press at the time. Not that good.
Just very average. Not bad but just not interesting in any way. 2/5 Won't listen again
It's not bad, but I didn't like it
#676. Listened and wasn't impressed. Next.
I like lots of the the music that Damon has produced especially blur, but I found this dull and his voice always too deep in the mix. I think it could have been very good if more care taken over the production
Jesus Christ, he really did write the same song 11 times and concluded by playing one more. ⭐⭐
I don't get the fetish for Damon Albarn on this list. He's everywhere and his music is just boring 90% of the time. Sometimes he makes a really good song like a couple on the 2nd half of this album, but fuck me is most of this boring as hell. This album sounds like listening to Radiohead at a really low volume and you can't tell what song it is
Just a little boring
Its ok nothing special.
a lot of Damon Albarn wailing over not very engaging backing
I’m not sure what to say about this album. Sometimes I feel like I don’t have the vocabulary to fully explain why something doesn’t work. It’s much easier to describe why something is good as opposed to finding fault with it. So here’s the positives, this band is a super group you might have never heard of before but it features the lead singer from The Gorillaz. Which is great cause he brings a great vocal performance. But that’s where the positives drop off. I actually spent two days listening to this cause I disliked it so much on first listen I thought I should give it one more chance in case maybe I was just in a bad mood for listening to new music. However I found the music to be grating and sonically I didn’t find the it original or interesting. I didn’t think this album was garbage. But I genuinely never plan to listen to it again.
It's like being edged for 43 minutes and it's over.
im bored
One long, wandering spacy song. Relaxing and melancholy, disjointed,
I went into this with an open mind, actually hoping to like it. Alas, there's something about Damon Albarn projects that's just really boring to me. Granted, there are a few really great Gorillaz tracks, some good Blur, but all in all, it's boooring.
Not even that bad but I can’t for the life of me imagine what could possibly be considered essential about this album
Mostly forgettable
It's one of those albums that make you wonder why they exist. What is this exactly? On the scale of Britpop this seems to be the opposite end of The Verve which I listened to a few days ago. The Verve combined all the good things about Britpop and left out the bad. It seems like I now know where these leftovers went. Did the band actually enjoy this? And why does a so-called "superband" make such dull music? Questions I will never know the answer to, and I don't really mind. This is a 1 or 2 for me but I'll round up just because of Simonon's melodic and syncopated bass lines which I like. My next album is going to be #200, I hope it will be a good one.
Mostly the 2nd one...
Too slow for my liking. Found it kind of boring. Did not hold my attention in anyway.
Jaa, näen kyllä vision ja kuulen sellaista suureellisuutta kuin brittipopbändeillä kuten Gorillaz on. Mutta tää ei päästä mua sisään? Liian liukas pinta, voin koskettaa vain sitä.
The good, the bad, the forgettable
This was a little too one note for my taste. I'd think "wow this is a long song" before realizing that actually 3 songs had passed since I was last paying attention. Not terrible, but very boring and not particularly groundbreaking in any way. The musicians involved in this project definitely deserve to have albums on this list, but this doesn't need to be there.
I didn't care for this one. It's not bad, but it's just nothing for me. 2/5
Diet Blur
Made by a super group? More like super boring. Honestly it's just ok - none of these songs jumped out at me and I'd hardly say this is an album you have to listen to before ya die. Just bad singing all around and stuff that puts you to sleep. 4/10.
This sort of washed over me with one thing and another. I'd probably need to listen again to be sure, but it just didn't seem very interesting I'm afraid.
Does the title of this album/ band title mean that the queen is neither good nor bad? She's... neutral? She needs to be acknowledged, but not ascribed any sort of feelings either way? Well what a coincidence, that's exactly how I feel about this album. I don't really dislike this, but there isn's a single song that resonates with me.
I can't stand Damon's whinny voice, or the whistling, or the sheer blandness of this. The tracks seemed to blur into each other due to the lack of any real change in tempo. Jangly keyboards and strange hooting sounds in the mix did nothing for me I'm afraid. It's a sad 2 stars from me, for something I didn't enjoy and won't ever listen to again hopefully.
Found it serviceable but after a couple listens only a few songs stood out as particularly memorable. Always nice to hear from Mr. Albarn though.
It took about 4-5 songs before I realized that it was the singer from Gorillaz Shocked me, innit
I never heard of this band so I assumed it would be kind of off the wall music since it came out in my younger music loving years. After listening and being fairly underwhelmed I did research and realized this was a super group singing about modern London. Super groups to me are typically a let down, so that explains my feelings on this one. Too many people with too many cool ideas get together and instead of pushing each other they created some watered down generic album. Maybe if I'd been to London this would have been better but nope it's just blah
Was an alright noise. Like the ones where you sit in a cafe and you hear the noise from people talking shit. Good for working
Not bad, but forgettable.
Despite being a supergroup with a pretty all-star lineup, this project is definitely not what I was expecting. I don’t really know what I was expecting… but it wasn’t this. I know this album was praised, and maybe I just don’t “get it” but I don’t think it’s for me. There just isn’t anything on here that makes me want to come back. Maybe I need to give it another chance. But for now, “meh” at best.
It’s fine, too bland for my taste both the music and the singer.
No está mal, pero me aburrió
I’ll agree with 1/3 of the album title.
Weird.
Slow and impactful music. Not something I will listen to often but certainly an album that has its time and mood. When that feeling comes I think these songs become great.
Having never heard of this project before 1001, I was super excited to listen to it. But it was ultimately a disappointment to me. I wanted choruses, maybe an uptempo song or two. This was just a bit flat. Couldn't get into it.
Meh
Too maudlin for my tastes, Damon Albarn is always better when he's got a sense of humour about his subject material...
Not bad, I feel like I've heard some of these before. I don't think that I would go out of my way to hear this again even though it's not bad. Some creative singing and music but not enough to really hook me.
Damon has a ton of music and I genuinely like 90% of his life’s work. This is somehow one of his only projects I really don’t get anything out of. Genuinely I think there are 15 of his albums I’d put on here over this one (granted a lot of those are on here). I hate to give this a low score because I love Damon but I really don’t get why this was added Rating: 2.1
Lots of Damon Albarn on this list. Pretty boring sadly, I get a bit tired of damon's meandering voice. It feels a bit like an album of filler gorillaz tracks. 2.5/3
Meh.
Strangely feels out of a different time than 2007... like early 80's post punk crossed with the Beatles but all mixed and recording in a teenager's garage.
I really don‘t understand, what this music wants to accomplish. So depressingly empty.
mid
Didn't get it, don't see what the fuss is about.
The Decent, The Mediocre and The Boring
The average, the decent and the mid
I was intrigued by this album but in the end, Kind of disappointed how forgettable this is.
2.5
Interesting moments, but forgettable
Fine, but not incredible. The music lacks any real spontaneity or "punch" that I would've expected from a post-2000 album on this list. Heavy use of acoustic guitar and strings, which normally impresses me to at least a 3-star rating – but not this time. The vocal is enunciated kind of lazily, making the melodies both difficult to sing along to and difficult to remember – two sins every songwriter learns to avoid during day 1 of the course. And the singer's vocal quality is like a heavily discounted Richard Wright of Pink Floyd (who himself isn't exactly known for his singing). I liked the part on The Good, The Bad & The Queen where The Good, The Bad & The Queen played The Good, The Bad & The Queen. (Although, the fact that such a sentence is grammatically correct makes one question whether this band's name is all they had going for them. It's not even that great of a name. Even the band's Spotify description admits that.) 2/5 Key tracks: History Song, Herculean
Meh
British rock critics will slurp up any sludge that Damon Albarn pisses out in front of them.
I've never heard of them, but they seem sad and pretty which kinda matches my mood. I guess this is british music? but I don't really understand the lyrics except that its got a gorillaz sound. basic becky sleepy. 3 stars. Not horrible but not memorable.
Another Albarn side project. Would be more into it if I was interested in England, or London.
This is supposed to be an album by a super group? Super bad maybe. Just an awful album. 2/10. +1 for some interesting work by the rhythm section so round up to a "2"
Not in my edition of the book. 2007. 2 stars. Sounds like a Blur album. Great if you like Blur, which I don't. Well done but no standout tracks. Is it me or does Damon Albarn always sound like he has a bad sinus infection?
okay but not rememberal and somewhat bland
Dull
I didn't enjoy the singing nor the music. Every song was around the same slow cadence. Not for me despite my love of a good concept album. 2/5.
Didn't really like this. Lots of winey singing.
After the smash hit both critically and financially that was the pair-up of Damon Albarn and Danger Mouse on Demon Days, you'd think another album with the two plus a slew of other characters would only be a knock out of the park, but the album leaves a lot to be desired, and quite frankly wastes the listener's time on every song. None of it is bad, but it all has the exact same setup of starting a song quiet, building it up over the course of the track, only to end the song before it actually goes anywhere. This doesn't matter whether the song is two minutes or seven, you will always be disappointed, and I'm just gonna come out and say I entirely blame Simon Tong. No clue how much he had at play in this album, but it reeks of Verve-isms, with boring track after boring track that only leave the listener waiting for something more, which never comes, as if the whole band is scared to get too loud and wake their parents who are just in the other room. Its inoffensive, but that wraps around and makes it aggravating, because you just sit there ingesting it waiting for something, anything to happen. I don't entirely blame Danger Mouse, as when the production itself is good, its good, but it could just use another voice somewhere teaching the lot here how songs have to end, not just stop. I will give it credit and say it sounds nothing like Albarn's other two major projects, but I'm also just gonna say there's a reason those are still famous today while this faded into obscurity on the 1001 Albums list, with very little other accolades to hold it up.
This was very boring and forgettable. The only time I felt engaged was during the instrumental part at the end of the last song.
Boring!
I'm not usually a fan of albums by supergroups because I don't think they work - too many egos. THis album just doesn't rock my boat.
This did nothing for me.
Nice in places but not really my thing
Not working for me, sorry
- Hmm not sure about this - hey that’s Damon Albarn! I like Damon albarn - anything else to recommend this album? - should it be one of the 1001? - Along with the 3 blur albums for him i would have picked demon days over this
I struggle with this. I love Blur and Gorillaz. For some reason GBATQ are seen as incredible and I just find it a bit boring. Nothing really stood out and I found myself just annoyed. And it’s a bad band name, I don’t give a toot.
Did someone rip ass into the microphone at the start of Kingdom of Doom? "There's a noise in the sky", No I think one of you needs to check for skidmarks. Man, I don't know if I just wasn't vibing with this one or if my mood was off but I don't think I felt a single thing listening to this. I am aware of a few of the members of this super group and like The Clash and Gorrillaz well enough. It felt technically competent in most places, but also void of any emotional investment. Damon Albarn described it as a mystery play themed around London so perhaps being bland was the intention? If it somehow was it doesn't make for a memorable experience. I listened to this twice and don't think there was a single standout or memorable track. There was also plenty of parts where the supergroup part felt like it might have hurt the production, a too many cooks kind of scenario where people didn't want to compromise on their vision and it just ends up sounding like the induction day for your Grade 1 music class, they even had someone smashing away at the triangle at some point.
We got Gorillaz at home. This isn't amazing gonna be honest, i like the artist, did some good stuff with Blur and Gorillaz but this feels like something he put together during a lull between The Fall and Plastic Beach. Overall just felt bored listening to this one. 2/5.
Not for me.
2.5/5. I was not very impressed by this. I found it average a bit boring.
This was alright. I kinda had high expectations since I like Damon Albarn's other projects, like the Gorillaz and this has Paul Simonon on bass too. Overall it didn't perk my ear up, found it dull.
Having a hard time with this one. Well done, some cool stuff here but at times feels rudderless. Right when you think it'll resolve or a big chorus should break, it doesn't.
Mostly a boring slog and a chore to get through. Some interesting moments in the instrumentals, especially great drumming, but Damon’s vocals and melodies just really don’t do it for me.
There is some really good stuff on here, but overall it comes off lacking a bit of edge and soul. I was bored through most of it even though it sounded nice.
5/10. It is listenable, but far too forgettable. I will probably forget everything about this album within one week.
It was fine, but nothing noteworthy for me - and kind of the same stuff over and over. I lost track of when a track ended and the next one started. I even listened to it twice. Nothing memorable. Maybe it was hard after Depeche Mode's Violator.
Not enough inspired music. I wanted to like it more, but it was reminiscent of the un-memorable parts of Gorillaz Plastic Beach. To much reliance on the voice to do melody, assigning the piano player to be the most boring drummer ever (play this chord once a second for 2 minutes, then play the minor chord 5 times, then go back to the original chord, but don't play anything else). There were a few songs that were stronger, but overall it wasn't quite strong enough for a 3.
Honestly I’m a little disappointed. I should love this album. Blur guy is great, Danger Mouse is great, drummer from Fela Kuti is great. But this just felt like a bunch of anemic Gorillaz b-sides to me. I really thought there would be some magic here
I hoped this would be better, memorable even. Man this should have been great. Maybe I have to give it another listen.
Another of Damon Albarn's (Blur/Gorillaz) experiments. It's fine, I suppose, but nothing to write home about. Easily forgettable. The band does feature Simon Tong from The Verve, and Paul Simonen of The Clash, but that doesn't help much. It may be an unpopular opinion, but I don't like Damon's experiments, or his music, much. But apparently this book seems to think that every jam session Damon ever had has to be on here. The album mostly consisted of Damon moaning. Favourite songs: 80s Life, History Song Least favourite songs: Behind the Sun, The Bunting Song 2/5
Hmm. I usually enjoy Damon Albarn projects, Danger Mouse too. I'd never heard of this, but based on the description, figured I'd really like it. Nope. I listened twice, and both times I felt like a heavy, oppressive fog was settling over me. It made me think of times I just wanted to dissociate, but someone would keep getting my attention and I would have to engage. I know that's a strange way to describe listening to an album, but, man. I just really felt bad listening to this. I listened to the first Broken Bells album after - I like Danger Mouse's production so much more on that one.
From the album art I thought it would be metal so was quite surprised when Damon Albarn started singing but otherwise not really that memorable
Where’s the good?
Idc
Repetitive. Mostly uninteresting. Boarders on annoying at times.
I was quite excited about this album when it was released, being a fan of Blur, The Clash and The Verve. I was also very disappointed when I listened to it back then, and listening to it again now, still was not that exciting. It is very average considering the great band the members came from.
Utterly forgettable. 2/5
Not for me. Didn't finish it
Ok. Kinda nice. Kinda Meh. Thanks. Probably won't return to this album. 2 tinsel stars ...
God almighty this is dull stuff with a loud bass
Meh album, the only song I enjoyed was the closer one.
The most blah supergroup to ever exist
Beige beige beige. Just so didn't give AF. Boring. Remember nothing
Like a boring version of Gorillaz. Just felt a bit bland.
I mean, better than Blur. I think Damon just isn't for me.
more like the sleep, the snooze, and the naptime. no oxford comma so bonus negative points
Jesus Christ Damon this is an embarrassment. You're telling me that the guy responsible for bands I love like Blur and Gorillaz also was the driving force of this mess? Really disappointed by this.
Supergroup, my ass.
I was really hoping for something more but… this just fell flat. Listened to it all in one go and even at the end of the album I had no idea what I just heard.
Would never be on this list if it was recorded by someone less famous. Not crap, utterly boring, and not important in any way.
Not unpleasant but so little to it you can hardly tell it's on. music: barely registered. (⌐-_-)
I think every single album ever made by an English guy is on here. I read about this and bought it on release day because of Paul Simonen’s involvement. Listened once, never thought of it again. Remember why now. Not bad, just totally non-essential.
boooooooooooooooooooooooooooring
Eh. Kind of boring if you ask me. In the beginning it recommend me of the Joe Strummer post clash work but that all had interest and sucked you in. This seemed to fight to keep me out. 2
Really overrated offering from one of the more overrated contributors out there. Not a lot redeeming about this one. 2/5
nå bs
The Good, The Bad & The Queen's self-titled album finds itself in a perplexing position. While it's not outright horrible, it fails to captivate with any real sense of intrigue or depth. The album traverses through various sonic landscapes, blending elements of rock, pop, and experimental music. Despite its ambition, however, it struggles to leave a lasting impression. Tracks meander without a clear sense of direction, lacking the hooks or memorable moments that define truly engaging music. Damon Albarn's vocals, though competent, fail to inject the necessary emotion or charisma into the songs. Overall, while The Good, The Bad & The Queen's effort is not without its merits, it falls short of being truly compelling, leaving me questioning its inclusion on the 1001 list. NUMBER OF BANGERS - 1 STAND OUT TRACK - The Good, the Bad and the Queen
I didn’t really like this album because it feels like it was trying to be experimental but just ended up sounding generic. it just kind of went in one ear and out the other.
I do love the Gorillaz, but this was not my favorite album. I just don’t like it when a band replaces instruments with long oscillating notes from one keyboard. Especially when it often gets screechy.
Similarly to a Big Star album I heard, I feel like this is only on the 1001 album list because Damon Alborn is involved. let's say an artist no one's heard of made this, it would not be on here. Because it is simply inferior to Gorillaz and Blur. Sure it wasn't bad listening, just something to put on in the background and immediately forget. A side project as well implies a lack of love and dedication for the thing. This lacked heart and spirit; it was mediocre, not good.
nothing specail
Based on the acoustic guitar intro to the first song, I thought I'd like this, but I did not.
On the quieter songs, the lead singer’s voice was complimentary. On others, the whininess and annoying sound overpowered the music.
Almost a one star. Joyless, and Damian voice grates after a while
Mediocre at best. There's gotta be something better than this that's not on this list.
Estos experimentos no están mal. Si te gustaba Blur y los Decemberist este es tu disco. Me he guardado Herculean y Kingdom of doom. No creo que sea imprescindible para mucha gente.
It's fine. Just fine. Nothing that'll stick with you or come close to lifting up your skirt.
As usual with Albarn, I’m not sure how much of this I like versus tolerate. There’s a lot of throwing ideas against the wall and seeing what sticks without any clear intention behind a bunch of it. As a depiction of London in the 2000s, it’s myopic and overly concerned with angst…which is often where Albarn loses me. Where’s the optimism? Where’s the energy of the city? Interesting collaboration but forgettable beyond the people involved.
Rating: 5/10 Meh.
2 - I thought I would like this album based on the way it started, but nothing happens in it. There's alright parts, but the music doesn't do anything with any momentum that it may have had. I don't really see why this is one of the 1001 albums I have to listen to. Just put Demon Days on the list, man.
Ah yes, my favorite Damon Albarn non-Gorillaz, non-Blur project! This one is mostly a letdown considering the personnel tied to it. A Danger Mouse produced record with Albarn and Paul Simonon on bass should be an easy knock out, but I felt myself getting sleepy and bored with this one pretty often.
I kind of generally like Damon Albarn's sensibilities and there were moments on this one where it sort of cleared up and i could appreciate the song writing, but generally it seemed really cluttered. hard to listen to, i ended up needing to split it up over a few days because it would not hold my attention. it's intricate, but it lacks contrast.
Fun instrumentation but sorry Damon your voice doesn’t do it for me if it’s not a blur song
I did not love this. There was this weird pitch-shifted "Alvin and the Chipmunks" vocal double that was panned to the right on multiple songs, which I absolutely hated. At one point, I started thinking, "Okay, maybe I am kind of enjoying this now. I've liked the last couple songs" only to find out that Spotify randomly decided to switch to playing a shuffle of other similar songs in the middle of the album. Every song that I had thought I had liked was not actually on the album. It wasn't completely irredeemable, so I will reluctantly give it 2 stars.
"The Good, The Bad & The Queen" by the supergroup of the same name falls short of expectations, earning a 2/5 rating. Despite featuring renowned musicians like Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon, Simon Tong, and Tony Allen, the album fails to deliver a cohesive or memorable listening experience. While the musicianship is undoubtedly proficient, the songs lack depth and fail to leave a lasting impression. The album's production, overseen by Danger Mouse, feels overproduced at times, detracting from the band's raw energy. While tracks like "Herculean" and "Kingdom of Doom" show glimpses of potential, they are overshadowed by the album's overall lackluster nature. Ultimately, "The Good, The Bad & The Queen" feels like a missed opportunity, failing to live up to the caliber of its members' previous work. 2/5
Final track aside, this is so bloody boring.
This music can't keep my attention.
Not terribly impressed though I’m sure whoever picked this was terribly impressed with themselves.
Everything Damon Albarn touches sounds like a side-project. Musically, this is better than some projects he has led, but I still hate his voice, he can't write a memorable vocal melody to save himself, and his preoccupation with the "state of England" bores me. This is wildly inessential, though it avoids being hateful.
The entire record was just too mellow for me and I am not a fan of the fuzzy production. A couple of good tracks in here but that’s it. Not my favorite side project.
Would this be here if it weren't for Damon, I doubt it,
I didn't know what to expect going into this album. Having now listened to it, I don't know what to tell you to expect going into this album. It's kind of interesting, starting with an indie pop/rock vibe and jumping around a bit, and ends with sort of a 1950s/1960s rock feel. I enjoyed the first few tracks but eventually stopped paying attention very much.
Interesting, but forgettable.
A bit boring but not bad. Some of the recording is a but annoying specially with headphones.
Not bad. Remarkable for being a side project, but I’m not quite sure what caused it to make the list. With a third of the songs left I was waiting for it to be over. No real interest in listening to it again.
I don't know how to describe this album. It's alternative, electronic, folky, synthy, emo, a little bit of pop, and a lot of bass. I've never heard an album with such soft spoken lyrics have so much bass. My car speakers were rattling. This album has me all over the place. I'm between giving it 2 stars or 4 stars. 3 stars isn't right. It's anything but average. I just don't know if anything means good or bad. For now I'll give it the Queen.
Seems like something I’d like but I just couldn’t get into it
”Supergruuppiudesta” huolimatta jää vähän jalkoihin
Not sure how to explain that it sounds interesting but it’s not? Some of these songs just go on without doing much. They overpromise at the outset and then never deliver. Reminds me of times where I come up with something I like on guitar, loop it, and then lose all interest in playing along with it after a few minutes but the loop keeps playing in my head. I wouldn’t make an album out of those, but that’s me. Damon Albarn is hit or miss to me, I like the Clash, and I love Tony Allen, but this is not quite a sum of its parts.
Quite repetitive and nothing stand out but good voice and music
Boring.
Had it's moments. Both ways.
Supergroup um Damon Albarn (Gorillaz) - spaciger Artpop mit Dub-Einflüssen. Nicht meins. 1,5
28/100 Based on this scale: 1 star - 0 to 19 2 stars - 20 to 39 3 stars - 40 to 59 4 stars - 60 to 79 5 stars - 80 to 100 Not actually bad, but eminently forgettable. Case in point, I listened to a couple of songs, but had to put it away and came back a few days later. I had completely forgotten what I'd heard so far. This list has no shortage of boring shit on it. Here, the music is often interesting, until the singing ruins everything. If your voice has a naturally soporific quality about it, then just sing lullabies and leave the rest of us alone.
It was ok, hard to focus on though. Some cool production but I couldn't latch on to the vocals, and it was pretty clearly supposed to be carried by the vocals.
Was grooving at the beginning, felt like a strange mix between gorillaz, late career Beatles songs, and some noisy british punk. Can't say I loved listening to it but it was interesting
The album was not particularly good. I am not sure what it was trying to be, maybe indie music. A little pretentious. I guess I will round up because it was only 45 minutes.
pretty good to relax and game to, some songs dragged on tho, and behind the sun just annoyed me. pretty forgettable and a lot of the songs just sounded the same.
i prefer gorillaz and blur, where damon albarn's connection with his band members feels more authentic. with 'the good, the bad & the queen', the art rock style doesn't hit the same mark for me. most songs blend together, lacking memorable hooks. a few tracks stand out slightly, nudging my rating up to a 2. it's an album with great potential, but it doesn't quite resonate like his other projects.
Less than the sum of its parts. Two and one-half stars.
Not great
The production was intriguing, but brought down by drab singing and dull lyrics. Definitely a case of style over substance. To me it came across as off-brand Radiohead. And not in a good way.
The mediocre, the mediocre, and the start of Damon Albarn's decline as a creative force.
there are some good sounds and ideas in here, but it all feels like buildup without proper resolution. as such, the whole album comes off as bland and forgettable
I listened to this on the bus on the way home from work and it made no impression whatsoever
Standard side project album.
Alright, given the artwork and the fact that I've never heard of this album before, I honestly made a furrowed wtf face when the first thing I heard was Albarn's voice. I'm not sure where some of the magic is lost, but the music here does not produce the same whimsical feel here with his singing. It's like.... you can tell he actually isn't that good of a singer. Never once did I ever have this thought while listening to the Gorillaz. It's like you are finally reminded that he's a bland British man that probably eats toast and beans for breakfast. That really says a lot about the music choice in that band compared to this one. There is also an incessant never ending piano in most tracks that clinks the same chord over and over and over instead of filling in the empty space with something lighter. It's like they're trying to imitate Sufjan Stevens. And what perfect timing actually..... the song Herculean reminds me of Age of Adz immensely. I can't explain why I don't like this album past the music just overall being quite forgettable. Was not expecting to give this a low score when it first started.
Eh. Sounds like the filler tracks on a Blur album.
forgettable
I remember getting "Herculean" as part of the free singles program on iTunes (throwback). It was nice and I enjoyed it, but it never left me wanting any more. I realize this is a supergroup, but it certainly plays kind of... plain. There are some nice dub influences sprinkled throughout, but it mostly ends with a dreary, kind of boring record that should justify why it's on this list aside from "the members are all in other, popular groups". Seriously, how did they waste a drummer from Fela Kuti's outfit? Favorite track: "Herculean"
This one was disappointing. I expected a bit more from a supposed "supergroup". The songs were very bland. They often lacked drums as well, which is strange considering the talented drummer they have in the lineup.
down with the monarchy
British supergroup composed of Damon Albarn, Paul Simonon, Simon Tong, and Tony Allen. I really enjoyed the ambiance and rock influences. The instrumentation is familiar and expansive (very Albarn); the way rock is juxtaposed with electronica and synths makes for a very modern and expensive sound; quite smooth and has a nice flow both in individual songs and as an album; has a dream-like nature to it; droning is used create atmosphere, and to be frank, I'm into it. Ultimately, nothing seems incredibly memorable, but the tunes are all quite tight, as might be expected from such a line up of professionals. A bit like a low-energy Gorillaz album, if more acoustic oriented. Loving the assortment of instruments, however. Edit: Yeah, Blur is better. Standouts: History Song, Northern Whale, The Bunting Song, Green Fields, The Good, The Bad, And The Queen.
This was just fine, I don't really care for Danger Mouse's production on this.
Oyendo de nuevo el 18 de Junio del 2025 porque nunca lo reitié en el 2023 ni dejé notas. -De por sí siempre amo la voz de Damon- 1. History Song. Reguetonoso, nice, un poco de ese synth tipo death of a party, theme for retro y optigan I. Chévere. 2. Good, not memorable. 3. " " " " " " " " " " ". 4. " " " " " " " " " " ". 5. Boring 6. Same. 7. Zzzz. Zzzzzkipped 8. Getting real fucking bored. 9. Zzzzzz 10. Three Changes. More fun, bad acid vibes tho', nice switch at 2:54. Fun, liked it more. Fav so far. 11. Cute, not catchy, boring. 12. -Tema del self titled, which is self titled- Like the intro hasta el primer verso so far. Ha explotado bien fun hasta el 4:10 (sigo en primera escucha) , acidy, nice. Una hidden track empieza con el riff del bajo. Cool, solo piano again. The end. Damn, Albarn. No queria shit on your thing but, I didn't like it too much. He'd be like: "That's aight, mate" with his English accent prolly'. 2, basically me gustó el inicio y el fin only.
It was ok. There were some parts of the album I really liked and then others that were just noise to me. My younger self would have enjoyed tripping out to some of the tunes. 😂
Dull and underwhelming - especially given the calibre of the players. Gorillaz/Blur/Clash/afrobeat this most certainly is not. Relatively interesting lyrics, but boring music.
A collaboration album between four great musicians of thier field. While the tracks contain signatures of all four musicians individual styles, I'm disappointed that the end project seems to be worse than the sum of its parts! A moody, languid record lacking the spark to make it powerful. A shame as it's technically very good with good rhythms and lyrics. For that I can't give it a one star, as some people may like it but for me this album is an unfortunate miss.
'Close, but no cigar', zoals men in het engels wel eens zegt.
Oké-ish
For 2007 this is not that good. There were several other albums in the mid 00s that were better and more influential than this. This supergroup album felt like the members found it what a supergroup from the 70s was like and tried to do that. This isn’t put together well and most of the music was boring and dull. Not a great album this time around. 4.9/10
I'm not really enjoying this all that much. These songs all sound like intros, and nothing is really grabbing my attention. I keep expecting the beat to kick in or something...but it never happens. The self titled song is the best of the bunch here and it does get a full band, rocking treatment. I wish the whole album sounded the same.
Darling Damon 2 Maybe 3
Doesn't reach the height of Gorrilaz or the best of Blur. The few good musical packages feel like samples from better songs
Bland bland bland 00s indie nonsense.
I guess these guys thought they should cash in on the popularity of their prior endeavours. The album didn’t work for me.
Overall 3/11. Some fun, but not my thing. Solid call to open with a banger. *1. "History Song" 3:05 Twangy Beetles. Druggy Finish. Love it. -2. "80's Life" 3:28 What is this Do-whap shit? -3. "Northern Whale" 3:54 Kinda Depressing -4. "Kingdom of Doom" 2:42 Starts Cowboy, back to beetles. -5. "Herculean" (featuring The Sixteen) 3:59 Slower Pumped up Kicks -6. "Behind the Sun" 2:38 Sleepy -7. "The Bunting Song" 3:47 Again Just kinda sleepy *8. "Nature Springs" 3:10 Much Better. Was beginning to to loose interest before this. Modern Beeps on retro mellow guitar scratch. We love our cowboy whistles. -9. "A Soldier's Tale" 2:30 This whole thing feels like a love letter to the beetles. Including the parts I'm not into. This is one of them. *10. "Three Changes" 4:15 Jazzy. Weird. I like that I can't tell if I like it. Fun to deconstruct. The weirder it gets the more I like it. -11. "Green Fields" 2:26 Mellow. Meaty nostalgia. Don't know. Every time I'm about to settle in it wanders away. Kinda Frustrating -12. "The Good, the Bad & the Queen" 7:00 Title drop. Definitely has that beetles influence. The yo-yoing tempo is disorienting. Kinda gives a dark circus funk? Nope not enjoying this.
It sounds like they just weren't trying
Não consegui achar nenhum diferencial.
Nope not a fan
Very mediocre
It kinda reminds me of Tame Impala. But without the heavy psychedelic sound
Album art screams rockabilly horrorpunk (the genre exists) but that isn't Dimery's style. It might be though? Art doesn't scream UK either, but again... it's Dimery... Oh fucking hell it IS from England, and Damon Albarn to boot. Zero rockabilly after the intro, mostly sounds like gloomy English half-rock, a bit like Albarn's other garbage. Big 2/5 vibe.
Was alright in places, some songs I liked but then they just droned on too long
boring
Ok but I thought slightly droney
Coulda, Woulda, Shoulda
I liked Blur. Gorillaz is fine. This was less good than both.
I remember being hyped for this when it came out, but it never quite scratching the itch I thought it would, and I still feel the same. It didn't capture what made each contributor's band great, it almost became their lowest common denominator.
2.9 - A dreary and drab record that leans on a few repetitive components: staccato piano chords, hyper-compressed drum tracks, distorted vocals and growly guitars. Altogether you get a record of charcoal gray and ashen gray.
I'm not familiar with this artist or album. I'm excited to give it a listen. Now that I've listened, I don't think I need to listen again. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't my thing.
Just not my cup of tea.
Damon Albarn and his mates have a go at being Radiohead, but (spoilers) he’s no Thom Yorke
Honestly just forgettable. Not for me.
Bland, boring and unmemorable.
Instantly recognised Damon Albans voice and instantly slipped into a coma Instantly forgettable
favs: 80s life northern whale nature springs rating 1.3/5
Poor man's Radiohead. Radiohead themselves are bad enough.
The Queen was probably outraged, and rightfully, so, at being included in the title of this less than stellar offering.
1. hiztory - 1 2. life - 2 3. uuhale - 1 4. doom - 2 5. herculean - 1 6. zun - 2 7. bunting - 2 8. nature - 1 9. zoldier - 1 10. three - 0 11. green - 2 12. queen - 2
How did this get here?
Wow, I did not enjoy this at all. Something about this album reeks of pretentiousness. Hard pass.
Why this was part of the list?
als grote fan van The Clash, iets mindere fan van Blur, was dit een tegenvaller van formaat.. te classeren onder de T van teleurstellend
Not what I expected. I was about to say it sounds like Damon Albarn and then I realised…Very unique, but too slow for my taste. Fav song is ‘Nature Springs’.
Supergroup? Nothing super about this.
This album is TEDIOUS. But The most annoying part is the Affected Vocal Slouch. One of the great tragedies of Bob Dylan’s popularity is the adoption of AVS as a means of signaling "I am a serious artist to be taken seriously." But for me it signals "I'm more interested in sounding cool than in sounding good." And, perhaps not surprisingly, that attitude, more often than not, produces music that is not good. This collection is an excellent example.
I was expecting so much more from this when I saw who was in this supergroup. Such a snoozer of an album. 3/10
Meh
This would have made a great ‘lost album’. The mere idea of it would have been mythical. Sadly, the reality of it far less so.
Not very interesting. This doesn't belong on this list, given how much great music came out during this period. 4.8
Boring, dont wanna hear this again. 1,8/5
Music tailor made for an indie film score and nothing else.
1/3rd correct. Bad.
Damon Albarn expended his entire creative energies on Demon Days and almost everything after has been complete shit.
Even when a side project doesn't quite work out there might be contractual obligations to release it anyway, since it was made at someone's expense, and fans of people famous for other things just might scrape up some cash for it. What's wrong is to include such albums in a list like this, and make people like me worse off for having listened to this steaming pile of shit.
The worst music Damon Albarn has ever been associated with. Uninspired drivel.
Group of mates jamming. No reason for anyone else to listen.
How many Damon Albarn records are on this dang list?!?!?
I like Damon Albarn a bit, Blur is my favorite of the Britpop stuff, Gorillaz is great, most of his solo is class. This is a bad project though. Supergroups often flatten each members' individual talents and this has got that going on in spades. It's basically the same song for forty-four minutes with slight variations on the drum fill or keys arrangement. But I found it wholly tedious. I thought I was mildly enjoying it for the bulk of it but during the last song, I heard my phone ring & I was so excited to just hear a new noise for the first time in 40 minutes that I realized I did not enjoy this one at all. One of the curious additions to the book that make you realize it's mostly written by British critics. Remember "Danger Mouse"? Favorite Track: Behind the Sun
Whatever the reason was that brought this so-called supergroup together, it ain't in the grooves. There's nothing interesting going on here; it's just track after track of nondescript songs topped off with Damon Albarn's artless singing.
Petition that requires the term 'Supergroup' include actual super stars of the respective genres (ex. Traveling Wilburys, Cream, Blind Faith, etc) and not musicians whom at best are quiet sidemen in bigger bands. This album started bland and got blander and offered nothing redeeming to my day. 1/5
Damon is boring here. Danger Mouse is the most overrated producer. Just not good is the only way I can really put it.
Supergroup? Really? Some nice musically moments spoilt by one of Albarn’s poorest vocal performances, at his whining worst.
a fairly boring departure from Gorillaz
Oh boy! It looks like it’s going to be lazy, bland rock and from the description including Damon Albarn of Gorillaz fame, I don’t have high hopes for this. 2007 also tends to be the kiss of death. I can’t believe people will one day be nostalgic for that time. I will have to tell my children that I grew up in the most boring time in human history. I mean not much was going on in the 800s or whatever, but at least you don’t have the lamest bards of that time pressed to tape for all eternity. Liek if ur still listening to Parnellio of House Dagon in 934🔥. The Northern reach tavern set still gets regular rotation. History Song - YES! Reggae influence!!! 80s Life - YES! Doo Wop Coldplay! Northern Whale - I like whales. They’re cool. Imagine them just rolling around in the oceans. The size of em. Oceans are crazy to think about. Kingdom of Doom - Another cool song title. That’s great! Herculean - This track describes my feat of listening to this garbage list for almost a year. SUB 2.5 average rating. That will dip further today. Behind the Sun - The infinity of black unknown. Life in its own right disqualified by the feeble minds of man. What we describe, we acknowledge. What evades our description exists entirely outside the reaching arm of humanity. Comprehension means we must acknowledge we are the infinitesimal in an infinite system beyond our grasp. The Bunting Song - Dis song sucks. Nature Springs - Oh man! Another banger!! This guy can’t miss! A Soldier’s Tale - STIIIIIIIIIRIKE 3. Oh no he didn’t even swing at that. Yeah bat didn’t leave the shoulders, Jim. Not Damon’s day. Three Changes - ONE cool moment on this record and it’s still vaguely reggae influenced. The latter section of this track is really the only passage I’ve been moderately alert for. Green Fields - I can imagine the euphoria of the afterlife. I am gazing at the fields of infinite bliss through teary eyes. We’re meeting the end. The Good, The Bad And The Queen - even the rare triplicate title can’t awake me from the coma induced by this disappointing slog. Man that sucked. Just the most boring, dull wallpaper sounding nothing rock I’ve heard in a bit. This sounds like the music from the rock band they invent for a TV show. Like an episode of CSI: Miami where The guitarist dies or something. I’ve had some fun listening to Gorillaz hits, but I’ve had more fun watching gorillas at the zoo. They’re just so human like!! Unlike this album which sounds like it was made by one of those bands that are entirely AI that the ghouls in the music industry create to sell the concept of losing our humanity for the profit of like 15 dudes. Ugh. Get this out of my face. 0.5 HIGHLIGHTS: All barn, no joy.
Leave it to Damon to make incredibly boring shit I can't even try to care about. Only reason why Gorillaz are occasionally good is because of outside influence from artists they collaborate with, this man is just terrible.
This is really not very good, and I’m feeling a bit resentful for the listen. Is the author fucking with us? I got excited for a sec, thinking we might get music from the great Ennio Morricone. Instead? Bahh! Yes, I’m bitter.
Happy to listen to every Gallagher Bros. solo project before ever hearing this again.
This was boring until it turned annoying.
Even more than all those boring electronica albums, which I can at least imagine having been influential to a scene which doesn't include me, this feels like a total waste of a spot on the list. I can't help but believe that it's only here because British people can't help themselves when they see Damon Albarn? Musically, it's probably a 2, but I just feel like my time is being totally wasted by getting this one today, so it's getting a 1.
I love Damon Albarn but I did not like this damn
Probably the most boring thing ive listened too so far during this. Awful.
“Oh wow! It has X person from X band, anddddd X person from X band, anddddd, etc., etc.” (Proceeds to sell a stupid amount of records, riding on prior efforts’ reputation and completionists alone) Never listening again.
Taas kerran miettii millä perusteella nämä täällä ovat. Voi kyynel mitä kuraa
I was more confused what this was
This is very easy to dislike. Dreary. Awful band name. So redundant to the list. This is musical nepotism. You just hired the guy with the killer CV without even conducting the interview. Never has anything been so much less than the sum of its parts. 1 star - not because its 1 star awful but because its hard to imagine something less deserving of a spot on the list.
Shite
This is the first Damon alburn album I've heard in full and that's unfortunate. I know I'll enjoy his other works far more. I found this to be the most mid album ever
No thanks. 1/5
Not listened before - not a must listen Favourite tracks: Herculean, title track
"Supergroup" my arse!
It's like a more boring version of a gorillaz album. Seeing as gorrilaz is essentially a supergroup, I really struggle to tell the difference between that and this.... Except that this is mind numbing and there is no rapping
Ai vielä tasapaksumpaa kuin Gorillaz? Mutta kirjoitin "biisejä Lontoosta"! Palkkasin The Clashin basistin! Rekrytoin Fela Kutin rumpalin! Juu.
I’ve had a bad stretch. Not even all “bad” albums. Just all forgettable stuff that makes you question if there is any good music or if you’ve lost your touch. I think it’s the albums.
Didn't want to rate anything this low, but it's awful. I like music from each of these musicians biggest bands, but this supergroup will never be on my Playlist. Not one redeeming song.
A supergroup isn’t really super if they don’t have any good ideas.
Dont see what all the fuss is about.
For such a legendary lineup, this is unfortunately boring standard brit rock. The only influence I hear here is from Damon Albarn. The rest of the band might as well be studio musicians.
I didn't like this album. The music was too simplistic, and the lyrics were not very captivating.
This just was sleazy and boring and mopey and gosh way too long. I don’t recognize why it should be on this list.
If this was the singer trying their best, then I don't want to hear them on an off day.
Come one man, why is this on here? Is it because one the guys is Damon Albarn, and they think he shits gold?Honestly can't see why this is on here? Sub par, demolike shite songs. Dont waste your time
Not good, not bad, sounds nothing like Queen, more like a watered down Gorillaz.
I'm rating it now even though there's still a couple songs left because holy shit this is boring. Why is everything Damon Albarn does so lifeless outside of a few bangers with Blur. You've got Tony Allen on the drums man, do something!
Like a pack of Gorillaz b-sides that weren't good for an album for that particular super group. Whilst there is nothing wrong with the album, there is nothing of worth here: bland, insepid, and inoffensive
I was hopeful this wouldn't be some self-indulgent British wankfest of over-inflated egos mashing their individual sounds together with little to no cohesion, but oh well maybe next time.
Nicht meine Richtung
Garbage. And not the good garbage like the band Garbage. Actually garbage
Supergroups sound cool in theory, but most of them just end up as less than the sum of their parts
Only bad. No good
It was neither good nor bad.
Rubbish!
I'll defend Brit Pop and it's fearsome leige Albarn the Conqueror until my last breath but this absolutely doesn't need to be on the list. Didn't hate it but one star as a nod to the BP detractors being right (this time)
I find this so very bland
I don't enjoy this faux gritty music production and sound and I don't care about whatever this man is sad about
Nope. I don’t think super groups work out a lot.
Gehört und von der Mediathek entfernt, nichts für mich!
How Albarn has blagged a living is beyond me
bored. no worse than that! looked for a band I hadnt heard of on the list. and i agree - dumb name. Oh the bleakness. how to make a ska beat feel flat... but then it sounds like Gorillaz B-side stuff. POh wait - Damon Albarn is Blur and Gorillaz - this is why some peopel should not always be indulged do side projects - NONE of the fun and charm of the others tuff I have heard him in. the opposite of uplifitng - its jarringly two speed (sad and bleak mixed with happy keyboard - my audiitory processing area is hurting).... admins - please remove this album from the list - ahhahaaa. no.
Sounded like American Idol amateur hour. Holy crap was the singing awful.
Never heard of this album or band and for good reason. Not a fan.
Like Gorillaz, only not good. An album I did not need to hear before I died.
Schijt
Didn’t really enjoy the music. To me the album is recreating songs that have already been made and the styles have been overdone. Like a 60s-70s album made in 2008. Just not fun or interesting to listen to for me.
Pretty boring album. The last two songs had some legs though. Those two songs brought this album from a 1 to a 1.5 for me. Shoegaze?
Joo ei. Säälittävää määkimistä. Varmaan lajissaan ihan hyvä, mut joo ei.
Meh, blur en gorillaz veel leuker
1/5. This album was honestly just so boring. It felt like multiple ideas being thrown around with none of them landing. The lack of processing on Albarn's voice felt so out of place for the vibe of the album. It felt like a Gorillaz album with some instruments thrown in there besides just a electronic beat. There was potential for sure, and it wasn't necessarily terrible to listen to, but there is no reason for me to revisit this one.
I thought this was OK when it came out; now, I don't understand why I had any time for it. Plodding and tiresome. More overvaluing of albums by artists who have done good stuff elsewhere.
Damon Albarn seems to have his finger in many pies. This one is cold and not too tasty, but his finger is still in it.
