Interesting sound that I wanted to like but just can't get into it

I am certainly open to albums that skew a bit more "art", but this one was a bit much for me. The real story for this album seems to be what happened leading up to it. Wyatt apparently had written the album, but then he fell off a balcony while drinking one night and permanently paralyzed himself from the waist down. He then finished making and recording this album in the months after the accident. He claims it was mostly done beforehand, but it's hard to believe that the accident didn't have a significant impact on how this turned out. While I struggle a bit with the content here (two of the songs have nonsense lyrics), there's definitely a lot of emotion in the album, particularly in the instrumentation. This is one that I'm probably not going to listen to again, but I respect what Wyatt was going for and can't imagine what he went through to get this made. Favorite song: Sea Song 11/21/23

Zu soft in dem Moment

Not a huge fan of this album. I will try a listen on a few other albums of his.

The music is really interesting. Feels like prog and is genuinely very good. But the lyrics and voice kills the vibe. 2 stars

Ya know, I tend to love an art rock, and maybe it was my mood yesterday, but this just didn't land with me. The Radiohead influence is strong, though. Which I liked.

This gave me lots of anxiety with little pay off

This was a bit too progressive for me. Perhaps there will be a time in life when this album can make a personal connection for me.. but the vocals really make it tough. However, I can recognize that the music is interesting and progressive for the era.

First track was really hard to enjoy. Got marginally better.

I feel this was put on the list by some oragnic free trade bean drinking hipster for the soul purpose of letting people know he knows it exists.

I like the story behind it but didn’t like the music itself. Rating: 2.0

First impression: wrong side of experimental for me, but I did feel compelled to give it another listen. Didn't change my opinion.

Very abrasive. Overall unpleasant 3/10.

Speeeees

This mostly sounds like it was conceived during labored fever dreams. According to Wikipedia, that's pretty much what happened. Goals achieved, I guess. Production also sounds very impressive for it's time in achieving what it was supposed to. It's just that the goals apparently did not include creating music that is in any way pleasant to listen to.

Rock experimental. Muy Aburrido.

Interesting album for sure but by the end its a one and done for me.

Baby boomer bullshit

Very annoying

Weird shit. Decently written, though.

I don't know, I just don't know. You prog lovers will probably enjoy this more than I do. Wyatt puts a lot of weird stuff together and it's not always off-putting, though Alifib and the sex-panting or Alife and the voice that ends up sounding like C3PO was. So what's the deal? Is this a good prog album or is it just here because Robert Wyatt was paralyzed before putting it together? If it's the latter, that's a bit of BS because why should we assume that someone paralyzed from the waist down can't do good things? Don't give it acclaim just because you thought he was crippled. I didn't think it was all that special from a prog rock perspective. I found it boring at times. If I didn't know the backstory, I'd say it's a 2. So that's where it stays.

Weird but not unlistenable

Interesting, but not sure I'll revisit it and I give too many 3s

Very hard work. Moments of beauty but disjointed between that.

This didn't work on me. No sale.

I truly wanted to like it.

This was below rock bottom

I usually like weird and offbeat, but this isn't hitting me right. Probably won't listen to it again. Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road has a good intro. Did I render judgement too soon? Nope. Not too soon.

very experimental and, unfortunately, quite unpleasant to listen to

I like the noodly take that some Radiohead does, apparently inspired by this guy. It's weird, and clearly has a quality, but it isn't an album I'll listen to again

This is one of those albums that makes you stop, ponder, and genuinely question the universe and hope to whatever deity you follow that you can find an answer to WTF did I just listen to?

Dissonant, proggy. I'm not particularly sure why I'm letting this escape my one star graveyard, but maybe a part of me likes it. It's weird. But I don't think I understand it, at all. Favorite track: "Alifie"

Kiusallisia vokalisointeja. En myöskään ole puhallinsoitin- ja kiipparikokeilujen ystävä. Mutta jäin paikoin kiinnostuneena kuuntelemaan

1 star for musicianship and another star for the nice drawing on the cover.

Melko huono, ei kuitenkaan riittävän paska.

It was a little weird. I thought i would like it better. Maybe after a few listens.

Weird but mostly not in a good way.

Ma che cos'è sta roba?

To strange for me. The compositions are to avante garde.

This was an interesting listen, but only memorable in a very unsettling way. Still glad to have listened to it though.

Didn't do it for me personally, but I guess it wasnt UNpleasant

slow pacing, annoying vocals, alifib is nice

not for me

The lyrics are fun in these songs but man they are a tough listen! I found myself more interested in his history and the influence he had on bands like Tears for Fears than I was in actually getting through the album, unfortunately.

Did not like

probably wont be checking this one out again, but it had some interesting melodies.

Meh. It was weird. Early experimental music, a lot of sounds and talking. 2 stars

Not a fan.

Like neurotic music but this one too freaky for me

I don't get it.

Weird album, wasn’t able to appreciate it.

Was he on drugs?!

Just not really my thing

2/5 I finally got through it.... UGH. I get that people do drugs but why do they also have to make experimental Jazz Rock Fusion too....? I read that he had an accident and became a paraplegic. Maybe he was dealing with a lot and that's why it's so painful to listen to. I don't know. Ugh. Glad it's over. It's sad too cause Sea Song was almost good and it lifted my hopes only to smash them against the Rocky Bottom Shoreline.

Artrock, stille og roligt, lidt skørt

tf did I just listen to?

What is this nonsense? The second track is mostly a the guy just going "wha, wha, wha, wha" over and over to a very minor key repetitive piano riff. This is too out there for me. I also have no idea what he's singing about in any of these songs. There's clearly some talent here and it's specified and focused on some group of people that probably really love this. Anyway, I never heard of Robert Wyatt and I think I know why.

Best Song: Little Red Riding Hood Hit The Road. At least the brass instrumentals were nice. Worst Song: Sea Song. That warbled singing is not a strong way to kick off an album. Overall: I respect the weirdness of this album, even if I mostly didn't enjoy it. The laboured breathing through the entirety of Alifib? Interesting choice that's awful to listen to. Followed by Alife, which sounds like the soundtrack to someone's sleep paralysis? Bold. Painful, but bold.

Pretty pretty pretty weird.

Rating: 5/10

When you say something is “interesting”, it’s usually damning with faint praise. However, this really is “interesting”. It’s a soundscape and an experience and a meander through space and time. I respect the experimentation and the vulnerability of this record. I wouldn’t necessarily choose to play it, but I definitely admire what he’s chosen to do and it was not a difficult experience. Kudos to the guy.

I love Shipbuilding, so was enthusiastic about listening to this album, but left bitterly disappointed. I only liked Seasong, the rest was cacophony.

Did not get this one at all.

Strange, and oddly improvisational-sounding.

The music on this album is interesting, but it is also awfully difficult to listen to. Favorite track: Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road

Sometimes, but not really.

I appreciate that he was experimenting but it didn’t sound great. 4/10

It’s all the parts of a prog rock album I skip.

Idk delivery sucks decent day but why

I wanted to like this much more than I did, unfortunately.

I'll start by saying I had no idea who Robert Wyatt or Soft Machine are. Both names sounded a wee bit familiar. I started reading the lyrics to the first song, Sea Song, before the music started. ugh. As I progressed into the album I thought, I'm cool with avant garde, kitsch, and dada (not to brag but I did see John Cage 4'33" in DC freshman year of college) but ugh...this brings me neither aural joy, intellectual stimulation, nor entertainment. Had I seen the album cover back in my youth, you can bet I'd have made the purchase. I love the artwork and how it makes me feel but can't say the same for the sounds produced on this record.

Unapologetically British. Not my favorite album and I'm not sure if it needs to be on the list. I didn't hate it, but won't be listening to it again. Best Songs: Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road Worst Songs: Sea Song, Alifib

Don't get it

2.5 Really like to hear more of this one.

Didn’t love it, but there was some interesting stuff on there. Might grow on me if I give it another listen.

It was ok. Just soft jazz smooth music. But I didn't like it

If you didn't already know Pitchfork sold out in 2015 and will 'fold in' later this year. Yes, they sold to Condé Nast which will fold the once independent music blog into GQ magazine. It seems crazy to think that this independent real-voice establishment would end up like this, but the bottom line makes the world go round, and nothing is free... This morning, I logged on to Pitchfork to see why they had given this album a 4+ star rating according to Wikipedia. No dice. Either the page is missing, unpublished or search on Pitchfork.com has been impacted by the merge. I did find an article (not review) of the 2-disc set "Different Every Time." Wyatt, seems to be the godfather of British experimental music in the early / mid 70's. The most interesting thing I found there was his connections. Pitchfork writes "...he's an astoundingly versatile and prolific collaborator: the six-degrees-of-Kevin-Bacon figure who directly links Jimi Hendrix, Hot Chip, Swell Maps, Pink Floyd, and Björk." So, as I don't care much for this album, it does suggest Robert Wyatt may have more influence as a collaborator on the music I do care about. Swell Maps has got to be one of my favorite discoveries in recent years... and Björk ... well, hits and misses, but there's no one else just like her. This album is just a piece of a larger machine, an entry in a resumé. Similarly, Pitchfork.com had plenty of influence and there was no other music resource like it either and now is an piece of something larger but less unique. https://pitchfork.com/reviews/albums/19920-different-every-time/ https://www.semafor.com/article/02/04/2024/inside-conde-nasts-breakup-with-pitchfork

Op z'n minst een speciaal album. Geen toegankelijke muziek, maar niet verschrikkelijk

Weird and experimental, but I did occasionally find myself vibing with it.

very experimental and, unfortunately, quite unpleasant to listen to

When I went through a brief period of let's call it "hipsterdom" I would've been all over this. It's not a radio album. The background story is compelling. It's kinda proggy, I guess. My vocabulary fails me right now. But this just left me uninterested. The background of the album really is something but listening to this is just...eh.

70s boring listen.

There wasn't really anything here for me. My first listen last night really rubbed me the wrong way. I gave it a second listen today on my walk and it wasn't completely repulsive to me...but much of it was.

Overall just very odd with weird noises etc. The fact that the oddness is the only thing I remember a day later, clearly says something

Famously composed by drummer Robert Wyatt in hospital after falling out a 3rd-story window. He's been in a wheelchair ever since. Instrumentation is pretty jazz-rock with a psychedelic edge, which I don't mind too much, but Wyatt on vocals is a non-starter for me. His soft, shitty little voice does nothing for me. This is what makes Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road easily the best song on the album for me: a nice jazz-fusion instrumental track that leans heavily into the atmospheric elements. I was hoping to get more out of this album than I did. Just seems like Wyatt had a lot of half-baked ideas where a few worked but most didn't. Combine that with poor vocal execution and you've got Rock Bottom.

Experimental but not a repeatable listen

Interesting musically, but vocals draining

i was initially going down the line of my standard check out this 70s nonce singing falsetto. but to give it some credit this is clearly some mad jazz shit and not just standard 70s wank.

Actual trash

Not really for me

Not awesome of something I must hear before I die.

It started well with a track that had a real Bowie-esque feel to it (Sea Song). But the rest of it was just a little too hit and miss to reach my criteria for a 3. I wouldn't listen to it again, but I wouldn't be screaming "Make it stop!!!"

Interesting, but I didn’t particularly enjoy it.

You sound different from other albums You come from the foam-crested mind

Almost instrumental type of music experimental for the time.

I can see how it is influential, but I find it unlistenable

Not really my thing. There's some great instrumentation and production work on this album, but unfortunately the vocals just get on my nerves for most of the songs. It seems like a really emotional record that is layered in a unique way, certainly unlike anything I've heard before, but it just couldn't peak my interest enough to be invested. If you can get past whiney and repetitive vocal parts, this could be a great record for any listener. It certainly seems like a precursor for bands like Radiohead, My Morning Jacket, and other art/experimental rock bands. Favorite Song: Little Red Riding Hood Hit The Road Least Favorite: Alife

Rock Bottom makes me feel like I am floating in an undeep puddle. Heavily layered soundscapes and Robert's scratchy and snoopyesque vocals create what is at times engaging jazz-rock, and other times confusingly awful melodies. It's not something I enjoy, or like, but that I almost appreciate for it's artistic merit. 2/5.

Some of the sounds are nice, but it was too subversive to me. Probably will have to listen to it again and try to wrap my brain around it-but for now I didn’t really dig it.

New artist, new music. I'm not sure how to even classify this album. The music shuffled between a mild "okay" and "¿whuh?" Saxophone squonks and back-masked lyrics. If I had to label this, I would call it a "nope".

No thank you, could not make it through half the songs.

Music sounded interesting, but hard to focus on with the grating vocals taking over. It's wierd, and not in a good way for me

songs are too long. i didnt like this one very much, the songs were so weird and trippy. it felt like there was no direction to it whatsoever. WAY WAY WAY too long and theres no point to it. but it wasnt bad 4/10

Strange

Not my kind of album, although did apprecaite it in parts. Not sure on the vocals

Hard work

Was something I would've never come across but I don't feel I'd have missed out either. 2*

Not sure why but I just didn't enjoy this.

Strange. Probably pretty good but I don’t have the energy for a second listen

Such an esoteric, cerebral album. Not bad.

Well this is some weirdness. Cant say I liked it, disliked at times even.

A fisherman's point of view what Prog Rock should sound like. Pretty wealth compared to other realeses in 1974.

Sounds like a poor impression of Bowie

meh, im not seeing it

A bit weird

Art (/prog?) rock rootz

I would genuinely like some of these songs if it wasn't for the vocals. The strange high pitch and noises really grate. Others are just irredeemably bad

This album isn’t on rock bottom, but it’s only the width of a head hair from being there

Bit too weird for me.

bro was definitely at rock bottom man wtf is this

Pretty unpleasant and dissonant in terms of music. His vocals on the early tracks are kind of wandering and erratic especially when he scats through entire segments to the point I thought it was meant to be a joke. Later in the album it drifts more into expiramental psychedelics with vocals and instruments seemingly recorded and played in reverse adding to the disharmony. Its kind of captivating in a way but it isn't something I would choose to listen to again and would only recommend to people who specifically ask for stuff thats out there. The story behind the album and artist is crazy though.

Rock Bottom is a good name for this album, because it’s that bad. I can tell why dude was a drummer and not a lead singer, cuz dude can’t sing a lick. Also dude tries to be interesting and experimental, and only manages to be annoying AF

I thought this album was super long, because it would not end. Realized that I just had it on a loop for 2 hours, and didn't realize the songs were repeating. So yeah, it definitely didn't click for me.

This shit is nonsense ass dawg. Almost no substance and just no cohesion. The guitar in the last track is cool. I guess.

Rough to get through, the story behind this album is inspiring though

Judging by the global reviews, this is one of the worst albums on the list. I can understand that impression, because what Robert Wyatt and company offer here really is “rock bottom” - in the sense that it really can’t get any worse. In addition to the completely inaccessible compositions, his extremely annoying vocals play a major role in this. I’m sure I could find some positive aspects if I were to focus on this album for a few hours. But I have neither the desire nor the time to do so.

Why does this album exist? "Rock Bottom" tries to be a good album, but it fails. The first two songs are decent compared to the tracks that come after. "Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road" has a section that's backwards for some reason. Do not get me started on the second half of the album. 1 star for "Rock Bottom".

Well, I was leery of putting this on after I looked Robert Wyatt up and saw that he was in Soft Machine, whose album I already had the displeasure of listening to. I saw this dipped a little more into genres that I am warm to, so I wasn't sure how I would feel putting this on. I'll certainly admit that this is more melodic, and there are actual SONGS on here and not just disjointed parts slapped together. That said, I'm not really into the dude's voice, and it meandered so far past the song's core at times that it just ended up lost. I read a bit about this dude's life and the tragedy that he faced, and you could hear the raw emotion and sadness in his voice. Got to give it up to him for deciding to keep going and make more music, but I don't want to listen to this again.

discordant, bizarre, i was into parts of it but mostly hated it. interesting at least

I've been studying for an exam the whole day and yet somehow this was still the worst part of my day.

Good grief. Found very little to like about this album - vocals, arrangement & overall vibe just didn’t work.

This is Rock Bottom.

Another "only important because there's something interesting about the recording of the album" (in this case he was quadriplegic). This was, I'm sorry to say, just bad.

I get that people call this a masterpiece, but to me it mostly felt like chalk on a chalkboard — fragile, wobbly, and not something I ever need to hear again. Happy he lived through the accident to create his artistry that some may enjoy.

I didn't connect with this music at all. Not for me.

This is terrible. Im not a violent person but I want to hit something. Kick a flowers head off. It just evokes pure frustration. Wankers for voting this in 0/5

You will not convince me that this is an album that needed to be listened to before I died. Convinced that the author of this list threw a couple of these on here to not only make us suffer but also see who would actually listen to a full album like this

Robert Wyatt had been an integral member of the Soft Machine, Canterbury, England’s greatest art-rock band. Where other art-rockers looked to wild theatrics and grandiose concepts, the Soft Machine plunged ahead into their uncompromising music. This brilliant solo album was being written before Wyatt fell from a five-story window and broke his spine. He finished it in the hospital, realizing that the album would have much less of his drumming and far more of his gentle, emotionally compelling voice. The arrangements are delicate and often sparse. His bride-to-be Alfreda Benge helped inspire him to new levels of personal introspection that still play out as complex puzzles. “Sea Song” is a perfect opener, settling into a melody that slips around the modest keyboards. “A Last Straw” begins as an atmospheric piece before breaking into cherubic vocals. “Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road” is psychedelic with a tough, acid edge. “Alifib” is a soothing match of instrumental weirdness and mild, heart-melting vocals.  Wyatt remains a relative obscurity in the U.S., despite his massive talents.

Not my cup of tea

If a kazoo could sing it would sound like this

not for me really but i appreciate its soft calming nature

Strange, not my thing

Ehhhh. Nah. Too avant-garde for me.

Some interesting stuff musically, but who told this guy he could sing? Damn that was a tough listen.

not nit not nit no not nit nit folly bololey ... yeah that pretty much sums up this album. I am just sad that my longest winning streak ends at 8.

strongly dislike. all skips. what was going on

sem comentários. A nota já diz tudo.

My sweet lord. What in the blue blazes did I just listen to? Were any animals tortured in the making of this album? Tuneless caterwauling. Rock bottom, indeed.

That was worse noise than a cat in a dryer

Mad boring prog rock nonsense

Meh, not feeling this one.

So sorry about this guy's life, and I'll skip the puns on the album title, but this was a terrible submission.

Another tragic backstory, was compelled to give this the benefit of the doubt, but this was simply not enjoyable

A Last Straw: flojisimo tambien Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road: flojo Alifib: arranco bien, otra vez se ouso floja Alife: igual a la anterior Little Red Robin Hood Hit the Road: malarda en conclusion, horrible.

Dreadful

Little red robin hood hit the road

I'm going to put this album under the file of "albums I just don't get". The album is very unique and has a kind of psychedelic rock feel, but much more mellow and slow. It sounded to me like the instruments and the vocals were written and recorded completely separately and then just laid on top of each other. Sometimes they made sense. Sometimes it felt like if you took two different songs that didn't go together at all and tried to do a mash up of them. I went in with no expectations, as I wasn't familiar with the artist or the album. Just definitely not my thing.

Kinda sound like poop from a butt

I'm not feeling it at all. The only good thing I can say about the music is that it was experimental.

It’s definitely impressive that Robert Wyatt manages to complete this album after a terrible accident that left him a paraplegic. However, that fact does not make this a great album. Let’s just admit that this album is ass.

hm dasch ein biseli weird i see. er singt mit sehr viel akzent irgendwie haha. de erst song goht so nienets ane?? wow aso italie het au gest geg bosnie verlore und isch drum nöd ade wm aber ich find sis gejaule gad insaaaane nervig und die ganze trompete uf little red riding hood oder wasauimmer schliiimm. hett etz sicher chöne ufmerksamer zuelose aber BRUDI han ich das nöd gnosse

ICH LIEB S COVER und jöö de wyatt gseht mega herzig uus ahhh okee es isch de type vo musigkritikmusig sea song gfalltmer instrumentell recht aber s a a a a a a a hetmi chli abglenkt mannn ich wetts iwie gern haa aber mit art rock chan ich hüfig eifach nöd so vill ahfange, au wenn ich hüfig s konzept vode musig cool finde aber ich han eifach WENIG SPASS little red riding sogar GAR KEI SPASS alifib und alife machtmer ähnlich vill spass bin ich froh wenn denn das fertig isch sorry wyatt ich han dier welle es 2 geh bis ich gmerkt han, es isch nur will du cute usgsehsch und ich Mitleid han. aber vlt bisch au en tubel, ich wirds nie ussefinde

Yeah listen, this album is super odd and the droning is not my taste, I am happy to never listen again. But I can’t deny the turmoil he must have been going through at this time. I just wish I understood it more. At least it was only 30 mins…

Energietrekkend vaag zolderkamer geluid.

Sorry, but the title of this album says it all for me: I don’t enjoy listening to this music, so I did give the album a listen, but no more than a minute per track…

It's safe and respectful to say I did not "get" or like this record much at all. It's very pretentious art-rock that goes off the rails early and never regains it's footing.

1. zea - 1 2. ztrauu - 1 3. hood - 0 4. alifib - 1 5. life - 1

Why does this absolute turkey have at least two albums here?

Yes it's pretty bippity boppity bad, but not as bad as music can be. Some originality and experimentation that I have to respect, but not much more than that 2.9/10

I understand the situation this album was made in. But my word, bleak would be more enjoyable. This is nothing. Its just not good. Considering the personel on the record you would expect so much more.

Dubya tee eff???

Playing this twice required a decent amount of energy. Happy to forget about this

It’s ok

This is something I would like to like but it’s pretty awful.

I'm sorry I complained about 50s Jazz yesterday. I'rather listen to hours of saxophone solos than having to sit through this pretentious crap.

I do like some of his stuff, but not this particular outing.

I tried listening to 40 seconds of it and gave up

I try to give every album I hear for this project a fair chance, I really do. And I can picture someone liking this album for its artistic vision or for its fascinating history. But for its sound? I have no idea who likes this album purely for its sound. I don't even dislike Psych Rock on principle but in every song, the artist finds a new way to annoy my ears. Be it nonsensical lyrics, instruments that resemble chalk on a blackboard or lengthy passages that add nothing to the experience. Each and every time I thought the song might be fine, something had to ruin my listening session. And I understand that this seemingly depicts a sailor descending into madness but I feel like a short film using this as the BGM would solicit more praise from me. I usually pick 2 songs I liked best I cannot do that here, I wish to never hear any of them again. 1/10, I truly hit rock bottom with this one.

I get it. Accident. Paraplegic. Awful circumstances and he rose above to finish creating the album anyway. I cannot stand his voice and out of tune singing.

I don’t feel very refined, as this just came across as noise to me.

A second Robert Wyatt album on this list. Last time, I wrote about the phenomenon known as ‘Wyatting the jukebox.’ I’ll write about it again. Wyatting is when you go to a pub, visit the juke, and play the most over-serious buzzkilly artsy fartsy bullshit you can think of. You deflate the vibe from the pub, you make everyone sad, and then every person then hates you forever after. Hearing Rock Bottom does illustrate the appropriate terminology for such a faux pas. I would never induce this album on anyone unless I disrespected them and wished them pain. I understand the catastrophic circumstances around this particular album, and I actually am pretty into Soft Machine, but no, Rock Bottom is near or level to the rock bottom of this 1001 albums list.

Yeah, nope.

Complete nonsense, the critics and Dimery have really dug their own reputational grave with this one.

This is just crap - no real melody, the lyrics are nonsense and most of it is discordant nails on a blackboard stuff. Never in the top 1001 ablums of all time in a million years

At least the album is appropriately titled.

ok its BAD. A mix between a cat walking on a piano and a musician that doesn't know his own skill. So much potential and yet it's a complete mess.

The second song broke me and I will not be continuing.

Rock Bottom feels like an apt title. Could barely make it through a single track

I'm sorry, but...what the fuck is this shit? I've already failed to keep this civil, but in the interest of civility I'll just say that *to me* this is akin to Captain Beefheart--it might be creative, but it is not good. Different strokes for different folks and all that, but...I can't imagine too many folks who legitimately enjoy this. We'll leave it at that.

This was really strange and never really clicked for me.

What if Tim Burton made a beach movie about a drunk Johnny Depp character who thinks he's an innovative artist and because he's rich and people call him eccentric. That's this album. Weird, theatrical, self-conscious, wearing strangeness like a costume. The voice is objectively bad but works for the vibe. The songs feel like a soundtrack to a low budget indie fantasy-sci-fi movie. Let's be real: he's a good musician who chose to make something weird, quiet, and fundamentally unserious. It's folk weird Pink Floyd. Warm production, messy, alive. Still not great. Confused? But not in a good way. Interesting like a conversation with a stranger on a bus. You'll forget it by the time you get home.

Too weird and off putting for me. Reading about the album I can see how you get an album like this, but I don’t like it at all.

This was the worst thing yet. Whoever included it should be ashamed.

I wish it was his voice not his legs that got paralyzed so we wouldn't have to listen to his catterwaling.

Not my cup of tea, hay buena creación de espacios y destellos muy buenos pero creo que al final como obra no termina de convencerme. 3/10

I honestly wanted to like some of the songs but his voice is so fucking terrible

I think we played this in middle school band!! Avant garde music doesn't do much for me...I wish it made me feel something but I just leave feeling unsatisfied. Minus one point for his funny accent. 1

1.5 Yeah, I’m not really sure what to make of this. I did a bit of research and learned that this album is the product of a tragic accident, one that left Robert paraplegic, leading many people to hail the music contained here as tortured brilliance. Obviously, I find that terrible and don’t wish to make light… but I just didn’t find anything here listenable, much less brilliant. I don’t know if saying that makes me an a-hole or if everyone else is being a bit patronizing (maybe a little bit of both?), but to say that I enjoyed this would be a lie. Like, I get the appeal of someone like Daniel Johnston - though not always the most pleasant on the ears, the sincerity is undeniable - then there’s this, which just felt like noise. While there’s admittedly some sense of musicality buried underneath all of it, a level of which I’ll be the first to admit that I’m probably not clever enough to compose myself, I also don’t think I would ever want to make something like this? Above all, I’m glad this guy was able to turn his rock bottom into a crowning musical achievement, one that has found its fans, but I just don’t get it. Even the album cover sucks - while I’m all for minimalism, this just looks unfinished. The song titles are sort of interesting I suppose, however, when you boil them down, they’re just nonsense. Maybe I need to read more into what draws people to this music to understand, but I’m willing to accept that this just might be a me issue.

No, just no.

I can see that someone might have appreciated the art of it, but I think it belongs somewhere between not on the list and Kid Rock. It's very chaotic and the lyrics sound like a mix of English, backmasked Arabic, and nonsense. The artsy-fartsy people who like this can keep it. There are moments where you get a few bars and think "Oh my, a bit of music I can hang onto", and then it gets interrupted with a goose-honking saxophone or a weird turn of phrase and you remember "Oh yeah, I'm listening to Robert Wyatt, not a sensible musician". Ending the album with that laugh sounds like he just pulled the biggest joke on all of us. Like... "I made the worst album I could think of and YOU ALL LISTENED TO IT." This is like the Voynich Manuscript of albums. My Rating: 0/5, but I have to put a 1.

A volte sembra che canti come Elio E Le Storie Tese. Non è un buon segno

A very weird album and my first 1/5. I don't even know what to write about it, it was just an unpleasant listen.

it sounds like open-mic night at karaoke it sounds like a middle school band warming up it sounds like rock bottom, both in title and in content you could make any number of zingers but none could capture how horrible this is im starting to think the 1001 albums guy ran out of ideas and just put this in to see who really read the book and actually listened to the albums within

I generally believe that there is always something redeeming about an artist's work. That no matter how it sounds on the surface, there is something underneath that gives it worth... Historical context, a single fantastic song in a sea of mediocrity, a lyric or a chorus that just strikes a nerve... Not so in this case. Hot trash.

They weren’t kidding when they named this album Rock Bottom. This is just doing nothing and it sounds like a bunch of toddlers at random instruments. I genuinely wanted this album to end so badly, it felt like torture to listen to it in one sitting. I wish that album was shorter, every time something my relatively good plays, something else kicks in and immediately ruins the song. And the lyrics and singing were just awful. I could go on more, but I feel like everyone has similar thoughts. I can’t understand anyone that likes this album.

This might just be the worst album I have ever heard. Every song is completely incoherent, it feels like each instrument was recorded for a different song, and they just took a random one of each and just overlayed them onto a song. And that synthesiser in the back ground, constantly just there playing an annoying riff and never going away. Also this guy cannot sing. I really don't like his voice, it's so unsettling in a way that I can't quite describe. I get that this is experimental, but there is a fine line between being innovative, and being insufferable and annoying. There is not even a moment on this album that I have anything positive to say about. Did I need to hear this before I die? I don’t even think this qualifies as “music”.

Now what in the ever loving SHITE is this????

chato mds

I tried to give it a chance. Really. But it is just time I’ll never get back. Hard pass.

Indeed I hit rock bottom while listening to this

This guy again? C'mon, Dimery. Nobody liked it the first time around. Quit trying to shovel this shit and call it gold.

Apt title

Mmmm yes just what I wanted. Random noises for an extended period of time. There’s something funny about one of the lowest rated albums on here being called “Rock Bottom”

Not really my thing tbh

no 💜

One of the other reviews describes this as "noodling" which I feel like is the correct descriptor. Kinda psych, kinda avant garde, pretty crap.

If you reading this review before listen to the album, don't worry, you can die before it.

Thank god that ended, this one gave me a some god chuckles so I’m glad I listened to it. Having said that… get in the bin.

No idea what this is even supposed to be, not for me 1.5*

YAWN!!!!!!

the dreams I had when I fell asleep listening to this were my rock bottom

Boring droning flat off key schlock.

Buy the album, not the story right? I will not be buying this album.

Stopped at second track. Hate this.

what a waste of everyone's time this album is not even close to listenable

Nope. Just... nope.

< The Beatles This is the kind of album I'm conflicted about, in a way. For one thing, it sucks, is annoying and I'm struggling to see why it's "essential" in any way. However, on the other side, the book/list SHOULD be a wide variety of music and should include all kinds of stuff, even experimental/fuck around randomly hitting a piano bullshit. That said, I'd be more open to bullshit like this on the list if so much of it wasn't taken up by every album ever made by a Beatle, 3 fucking Dexys Midnight Runners albums, copious repeats of other artists, often English, and the metric shit ton of 50s and 60s English bands that desperately wanted to BE the Beatles and a shitload of 70s mid as fuck English rock bands.

Seriously THE worst Album so far

I’ve had Shleep by Wyatt previously and I remember saying it might be my overall worst album so far. Well now it has some competition. Hate is a strong word and yet somehow not strong enough to describe how I feel about this one. Maybe it takes a few listens or maybe listening to it in work isn’t the right setting. Maybe he just isn’t for me as an artist. All I know is I’m not a religious man but I shall pray he has no more albums on here.

i couldn’t appreciate it because of the lack of any melodies. i can appreciate the other artistic aspects, but this album is just not for me.

Ugh. 1.

I think you might need drugs for this one. It's awful

1.5/10

I'm struggling to characterize my thoughts on this. It is... bad. 1/1

I don't know what this was and why it's held in such high regard. Absolutely awful. Nonsense lyrics about mustard and custard. Never going back to this or have any interest in his other work.

I can only imagine this is included on the list due to the author's drug fuelled nostalgia. This is fucking awful. I can find zero redeeming qualities. Set it on fire, then take the ashes, encase them in concrete and bury them deep underground so that nobody will ever have the misfortune of being subjected to this shower of shite ever again.

Hate this

I had a feeling I wasn’t going to like this right from the jump when, 1/3 into the one song that is the most downloaded, there was a bunch of random aimless playing that sounded made up on the spot with no forethought. It set the stage for the rest of this album which was, by and large, aimless.

Apt album title.

This is not good.

I was impressed by how dull this album was.

First listen

Horrible noise.

It's a no from me dawg.

DNF - I would be embarrassed to watch the car crash that is this music if I saw it in person. Between the key changes mid melody, the 3 minute "whoa" during "A Last Straw", the discordant non-stop trumpets in "Little Red Riding Hood Hit the Road", it's just painful and indecisive. Robert Wyatt's album has a distinct identity and it should be hidden away.

I didn't enjoy this one. I gave it 3 tracks before giving up. It just wasn't for me.

I would like that 40 minutes back, please

Boring

A little to experimental for me.

This is terrible and unlistenable.

What if Pink Floyd was actually an awful prog band? It would be this album. At least the title tells you how bad it's gonna be.

0/10 - Would not recommend. Had to listen to Rumours as a palette cleanser.

This record is like if someone heard David Bowie playing off in the distance one time and tried to recreate it from memory. Dissonant nonsense, total mumbo jumbo. “Best” Track: Sea Song

Its annoying I don't like it. I only made it through the first 2 tracks.

Couldn’t finish the album.. not my type. Don’t know why it was in 1000 album list?

Wtf was that

This is definitely rock bottom - terrible and weird

Terrible. Just sounds like random noise with no purpose nor direction

Nick Mason of Pink Floyd produces which is cool. Mike Oldfield also plays guitar near the end which is also cool. With this being his record Robert Wyatt sings as well which is just about tolerable until he does his old drunk hobo fisherman scat singing in abundance. And then after a couple of tracks it starts to swamp up with leagues of avant garde orchestration and freeform jazz sax. Earache Records was a label that supposedly debuted in 1987 but they actually pulled off a surprise earlier secret launch album with this one. The classic mid-80s line up of Scritti Politti - Green Gartside, David Gamson and Fred Maher - all bonded and unified because of their fondness for Robert Wyatt so that’s probably the main thing that keeps this record from being Rock Bottom on my list.

Quite annoying stuff

Why is this on the list???

Yikes! Did we hit rock bottom on this list?

This album was really out there.

Another shining example of why drummers should never strike out on their own...and I am saying this as a drummer of 25 years, myself. (j/k....kinda) This album is essentially unlistenable and has absolutely no place on this list. Like, what the fuck, man? 1/5

I didn’t like it

I can't forsake you or forsqueak you - Hamlet

I’ll give this a one. And that’s grading on a handicap

More art rock nonsense.

If the song Alife is what I think it's about then fuck you Robert Wyatt

Pretty terrible album. The story behind the artist is better than the music unfortunately.

If I never heard this album again it wouldn't be too soon. This is awful music. Saw it reviewed as some sort of Art Rock. Well it's terrible.

I hit rock bottom listening to this noise 1 ⭐️

This could have easily been 1000 albums to listen to before you die. I did NOT have to listen to this album, which was in fact unlistenable. 0 stars
