Reviews (page 5 of 7)
This is very 90s in ways both good and bad. Easy to see why someone would love it and why someone would hate it. I'm in between. I can't see coming back to it though. Also it's too long. Would give 2.5 if I could.
An OK album overall but nothing to write home about there wasn't really a standout song, but the overall sound was pleasant enough even though it was a really long album. Best: Lazarus Worst: Run My Way Runway
I liked this album but it felt a little disjointed, and not in an endearing Broken Social Scene kind of way but more in a "fuck it let's see what this petal does" way. Not a bad thing but made the listening experience pretty uneven over the course of an hour. Funny enough, the more straightforward songs ended up standing out the most.
Haven’t heard of them - Pop album from 1993. Not bad, not great. 3.
Nice surprise! Really like the trumpet and reggae parts that pop up over the droning guitars, def listen again!
Perhaps not as giant a step as the title would have you believe. Still, an alright listen.
I'm a bit surprised that I haven't listened to these guys before. Good writing and musicianship. Not really a fan of the genre but didn't find this unlistenable.
Too indie for my taste.
I’m a bit mixed on this one. Some songs are actually very good, but they usually have certain elements that ruin them for me. Lots of highs and lows, pretty average album. There’s one song I have to mention, although it’s not on my top 3, the closing track “The White Noise Revisited”. It’s got such an amazing ending, a perfect closer. But the first half is just so weird and off-putting that I can’t consider it one of my favourites. But it deserves a mention here anyway. 6/10 Top 3: 1. I’ve Lost the Reason 2. If You Want It, Take It 3. I Hang Suspended
I wanna give 2.5
Fun, light, not very complex. A few of the riffs grabbed me at times but overall did not pique much interest in my brain.
Just okay, but I wanted this to be over so I could listen to something else
ive listened to this before, but it sounds kinda all over the place although good. theres a mix o 90s genres here, sounding kinda beatles even sometimes. nothing that catchy tho
These guys have great sense for melodic songwriting, if this was shorter and more focused it would really be something! I appreciate the use of wind instruments too
Fricka rätt heavy me flera låtar dock.
3/5. The clear cut best song for me was Lazarus, while some songs just made no sense nor added any value to the album. Very interesting blend of music.
Sometimes beautiful and reminiscent of the Beatles, sometimes kinda empty and immitative of its era... Or maybe I didn't give it enough of a chance
My Bloody Valentine meets Head on the Door era Cure and take-your-pick of mid 90s alt-pop bands. Not bad, but not particularly memorable.
A totally fine and adequate album. Can hear the Beatles influence. Did they have to go so heavy on the effects, especially on the vocals though?
Cool album. Loved the shout out to Lenny Bruce
Mmm
This is one of those albums that I ended not really knowing what to think. It's eclectic, which meant there were some elements I disliked and some I liked, which leaves me conflicted. I think it got better as it went on, so I'm gonna give it a three. My favourite song was I've Lost The Reason, I think.
Another one of those ADHD albums where they threw together every single genre popular at the time into one album. Not the best thing ever made, but surprisingly coherent and not boring. I don't think I'll ever listen to the entire hour-long album again, but there were some playlist-worthy songs here, like "Lazarus".
Enjoyed this surprisingly, some psychedelic sounds in there
I thought I knew the boo radleys but this sounds completely different to the stuff I've heard previously. The songs jump from genre to genre but they're all great, Lazarus was a late highlight. Not sure whether to be impressed that they pumped so many genres into an album or complain about the whiplash. Low 3.
Exciting. Groundbreaking Innovative Scintillating Trailblazing These are all words that don’t come to mind to describe this album. Perfectly pleasant Fine Love their name Beats me why it’s on this list That’s what comes to mind. I did really like Wake Up Boo, but it’s not even on this album.
This was an interesting album — first time I heard of the band. I thought the songwriting was inventive, I'd say the band has staked its own territory, and good on them for it. That does work both ways, though, as one listen isn't enough to really get my brain wrapped around the songs, and as they ping-pong around a bit in terms of style, I was at a solid 3.5 and wondering whether to bump it up or down. That was ultimately determined by the old mid-90s curse of putting too many tracks on the album. The last four songs seemed imminently less excellent than the 13 that preceded them, so that suppressed the rating. They're better than a 3, but that's all I got.
i had the hardest time getting into this one. I think the mix was really throwing me off. Also, it sounded very disjointed. but by the end, it was starting to click. I even went back and re-listened to a few tracks and songs that i had previously struggled with started making more sense. so perhaps this would creep up to a four for me if I revisited it at a later date, but I'm unsure when that might be. Anyway, i was glad to have checked this out, even if i wasn't in the right frame of mind for it.
I listened to this without reading the song list or being familiar with the band. Some songs blew me away and other songs were like huh? I'll likely revisit this with more attention paid to what I was hearing.
Fine album. Great guitar work.
Favorite Song: Wish I Was Skinny A very solid album overall. 3.6/5
For '93, this sounds like a very ambitious album. I kind of like shoegazey music but in small doses. After reading up on this band, they were primarily a shoegaze band but for this album they wanted to expand their sound. And I think they achieved what they wanted because there are some really cool elements introduced. The vocalists, I assume it's just one vocalist, his voice often changes, at times it was similar to Billy Joel Armstrong, and at other times it sounded like Chester Bennington's soft vocals. His voice was pretty great throughout the record. His lyrics were... Meh. I can't help but be disappointed when good singers don't have good lyrics. It feels like talent is wasted. On the flip side, I appreciate a bad singer with good lyrics to the other. Artists like Daniel Johnston, for example... Which may be me just being picky.. But I can be. Just like you can too! Music was pretty great. This album sounds good too. I appreciate a well produced record. Apparently a 30 year anniversary of this record is coming this year? I'd like to see a comparison of each. Maybe I'd give that re-release a go. Overall, a good album. Not soemthing I'd pull out and be excited to show someone it.. But a good listen.
Points for eclecticism, but this one’s a bit more “Boo” than “Rad” for me.
Interesting. Punky at times, Beatles-ish at times, Pink Floyd-ish at times. Not bad.
A bit long to keep me fully engaged, and while some of the stylings are not my favourite, this seems like a pretty strong record through and through and if I was more inclined to this vibe it might be a favourite. Three and a half. Fave track: Best Lose the Fear
Pick a lane guys. It's not bad, but not great either. And a 1 hour album to boot. What is with the author of this book just randomly adding these obscure 90s rock-ish waffles of albums to the 1001 book?
Ok.
There is so much going on in this album, it is hard to narrow down just what this album is...this is part indie rock, part Britpop, part shoegaze, part psychedelic, with a little country, reggae, noise pop and orchestral in there. Standouts: Upon 9th and Fairchild, Leaves and Sand, Barney (...and Me), Lazarus
Another middle of the road Britpop album? And it's an hour long? Great, throw it in the book. Can't have too few of those can we now? Just another run of the mill album. Nothing special. Not bad. Too long like all 90s Britpop crap
The first song was really good, but the rest was kinda meh
3-
Enjoyed more than I expected too, long album tho got tired of it by the end
More of a cool sound/vibe overall rather than a collection of good songs; there are some exceptions ("Best Lose the Fear") but the sense it gives when done is that I've just spent the last hour in a dark drugged out overly chill British basement club with 120 slowly swaying zombies and who brought me here anyways? I don't dislike it; in fact it's some of the better emo/wall-of-guitar sound bands of the early 90s. Just that after a (short) while it's all a blend. Maybe that's the point. 5/10 3 stars.
Interesting sound, innovative, but not my style of rock
Decent pop/rock albeit a bit too long
A very eclectic mix of styles of music. Hit or miss, but I did enjoy a few songs here and there. Not bad.
Eeeuh bof très correcte
A bit up and down but pretty alright really
bit of a mess but i enjoyed it
This was better than I though after reading the description. Another long one though.
Another album that has me questioning who put this list together. Would give 2.5 if I could.
It's very late-80s, early-90s indie. Not bad: I like some of the songs, but no one track really stands-out.
Very mediocre. I didn't really dislike anything in particular about it, it was one of those albums that just feels disappointingly boring.
Very interesting
-never heard of this band or this album, once again -this week really just gave me one artist and album i love and then a bunch of random other ones -this first song is pretty cool -the intro was really weird and spacey but i liked it -another song with a kooky intro! i dig it -loving the guitar in the beginning of leaves and sand -there are lots of funky sounds in this album -an easy three stars from me
A few tracks I really liked but overall too long
I can kinda tell why this one was forgotten. It fills in the cracks around all the other early 90s indie and shoegaze that was kicking off on both sides of the pond. Still, though, for all of its genuine highs (Lazarus, for one), it has just about negative staying power. Its placement on here just feels like the UK-centric nature of the list itself overpowering actual notoriety and quality. There's absolutely zero reason for it to be over an hour, too. And on the pedestal these words appear: "3/5." Nothing beside remains.
In spite of the fun coincidence of my having had dinner at Boo Radley's last night, this album was a bit of a dud for me. Couple alright songs, but nothing memorable. Probably 3/5 👎 situation, but I may downgrade that to a 2 after a nights sleep on it.
Pop rock sin muchas complicaciones. Un poco desapercibido ha pasado. Le he visto un poco soso
An interesting album. Many songs with experimental intros. And a clear reference to where Björk copied the intro to her song “Army of Me” which came from The Boo Radleys song “Run my way runway”.
Pretty good at times, very annoying sometimes as well. Overall pretty average.
I wanted it to lock in and take me with it... But it never did. Just felt average'ish
Very melodius vocals unfortunately the instrument sections are at odds with this.
This album seemed to skip between shoegaze, indie, and alternative rock throughout its hour length and thankfully I’ve already had my mbv breakthrough on shoegaze or else I would’ve liked this album a lot less I think. Overall it was alright with a few standout songs (wish I was skinny, best lose the fear), a good amount of unnotable songs, and one or two songs that made me viscerally uncomfortable (the runway and white noise songs near the end). Honestly the shoegaze section in mainly the first quarter was my favorite part of the whole album which would’ve been pretty surprising 2 months ago.
Pretty good but forgettable.
there was like one track that was alright...
So.....this is not what I had expected. (I had read before that 'Wake Up, Boo!' was not representative of their oeuvre. I didn't realise just how non representative it was. I mean, guys, if you'd told me this was early Slowdive I would have believed it. I bet they hated the popularity of Wake Up. I hope they enjoyed the money they got from it.
Vocals are abit average to me - repetitive and not that interesting of a range going on. Nice horns etc throughout
Pop rock alternativo.
Behagligt men lite tråkigt
Missed this at the time. Elements that I like, but sometimes the tones just transport me to Brit pop
I’m somewhat certain I’ve come across the Boo Radleys before, but I could well just be getting mixed up when when I read To Kill A Mockingbird. I go into this somewhat hopeful today, so let’s listen and find out! Songs I already knew: none Favourites: I Wish I Was Skinny, Barney (…And Me) My opinion on this album went quite up and down throughout. The vibe and genre reminded me a little of My Bloody Valentine (see my YouTube for a video review on Loveless by them!), but with more singable melodies which made it more palatable. There were parts that felt like fun summer alt-rock, but then others that felt somewhat annoying and too messy for my taste. Overall, I would say I enjoyed this, but I’m doubting I’ll be returning to listen again.
pretty eclectic album. distorted guitar sounds, solid bass lines, every once in a while i hear an americana influence. schizophrenic, but in a good way. to me, it sounds like a mashup of the beatles, beck, and the meat puppets with experimental elements. very interesting listen. highlights: “upon 9th and fairchild”, “leaves and sand”, “butterfly mcqueen”, “if you want it, take it”.
This is pretty good, honestly. I'd give it a 4 but it didn't know when to stop. 17 tracks is too many tracks. White noise revisited really needed to stop before it did. Well before.
Another album that wasn’t bad but wasn’t very memorable. It was just sorta there.
Now I see where Badly Drawn Boy got all his ideas. Also hearing Belle and Sebastian and even Dinosaur, Jr. It's an interesting album in its way, but I think it's too inconsistent and the good ideas come and go too quickly.
A weird little stop into the 90s.
It was an okay rock album, I enjoyed some songs and not others. The album would be like half the length of the intros and outros weren't so damn long! My favorite song was "Thinking of Ways"
Good album by an under appreciated band.
This kind of washed over me as it sounded like a lot of other albums of the time.
Haven't listened to much shoegaze but it's an interesting genre. I like the contrast between the soft vocals/standard guitar beats and sudden patches of coarse instrumentals. It keeps things unpredictable but not far enough to get me interested in what's otherwise an alright rock album.
Some songs OK and some kinda irritating.
Solid sound, interesting concepts. these guys really like their breakdowns.
Has the potential to be really good in a lot of spots but just misses the mark in most places
I don't hate it as much as others. There were some really good moments in this album and I give them points for taking a swing at a lot of different styles. It doesn't always work but when it does it's...pretty good.
Very interesting album but I liked it. I enjoyed the different directions it would take me on.
I didn’t really get it, hmm. I don’t know, l likes it but it was hard to get into it really, every song felt like it belongs to a different genre and most of the time I like that. Oh well Saved tracks: Upon 9th And Fairchild, Leaves And Sand, Best Lose the Fear, I’ve Lost the Reason
Malgrat tot, aquí i allà van brotant brillants temes pop de tant en tant: 'Wish I Was Skinny', 'Best Lose the Fear', 'White Noise Revisited'...
Favoritas: -I Hang Suspended -Wish I Was Skinny
Rating: 6/10 Best songs: Upon 9th and fairchild
I've got to admit that such creamy guitars and shoegaze-ish vocals turned this britpop tune into some nice jams. But come on, who the heck would want an hour of britpop? Basically Smashing Pumpkins but worse.
I had only vaguely heard of this band before - not sure why they weren't on my radar as I think I would have been pretty into them at the time. I guess they didn't have a strong presence in Australia back in the day. Anyway, another introduction through this App to a band I hadn't listened to before, and who I quite like.
Alt rock. Not bad, very OK as a matter of fact. It's a bit on the long and thus tedious side. 2.5/5
It was fine. Nothing I loved.
This was just ok. Liked some of the tracks really didn’t care for others. Not sure really how I feel About this one… May give it another listen in a different headspace
Bloated listen, I love the production and lyrics but it’s a long listen
they seem like nice people but this doesn’t light my fire
Interesting album, enjoyed the two listens, would listen again
Wasn't into it, wasn't into it, wasn't into it...wait, that's interesting...is it me or this not half bad, wait, it's getting pretty good. Preferred walking the back half of this album to the front. Worked more for me as it went on. Solid 3 heading to 4 stars territory.
I've always disliked 'Wake Up Boo'. This is better.
Surprisingly enjoyable. Much better than expected
Sick
This was a pleasant surprise. I figured this was going to be a pretty forgettable C-tier britpop album but there was actually a lot of interesting stuff going on and a much more Ride-esque shoegaze feel. Still a bit too long but not bad at all
There were a lot of interesting instrumentals in here, but the album felt kind of jumbled.
I guess what I will say about The Boo Radleys is that they went all in and took some risks here. And you know, I'm all for playing around with genre and trying new things. But it's really hard to get what they're trying to do, because it's such a hodgepodge of styles. Some interesting moments here, and it improves quite a bit by the back half, but there's also a lot of filler. Fave Songs: If You Want It, Take It; Leaves and Sand; One Is For; Wish I Was Skinny; Run My Way Runway; Spun Around
It’s fine
Better than I expected - 60s throwback shoegaze indie pop. But still felt too long and a bit samey.
Not too bad. I found go to be quite listenable to.
There were some songs that I really liked, but overall the album just kind of dragged on. Also, some of the noisier tracks were kind of grating and too wall-of-sound-y, so I found myself adjusting my listening volume constantly.
This was ok, but sorta boring overall. Not as boring as the most boring shoegaze, but not exciting. 3/5
I would say it's just decent. Some cool songs with cool ideas, but a bit repetitive. The noise/dissonance is nice at points and also grating at points. 5/10
3.5
Blending reggae with grunge-like guitars then going all easy-listening pop all of a sudden in the first 3 songs.
man i wanted to like this more, there were some cool moments that gave me smashing pumpkins vibes, and cool guitar riffs. but some of the effects that they used were just so grating to listen to, and after an hour the lyrics started to feel really heavy-handed. 5/10
Sitting at the intersection of twee and shoegaze, this album does a lot. That may be a stroke against it, as it feels about 10+ minutes too long.
The Boo Radleys is a top-tier band name. Too bad the album doesn't live up to it. There are some cool moments, but overall it's a bloated album that sounds like they were making it for themselves more than anybody else. I fully support that, but...album to listen to before I die? Best track: Lazarus
it was umm a different tune
I think I have to finally accept that this list os full of bands and albums that I never heard of and probably never will again after this challenge is done. Especially that many of those positions are very average and ordinary. "Hey, remember that one irrelevant band from 70s, coming from that now non-existing village in England? They were producing music using only a synthesizer made from a half-chewed potato! It HAS to be on this list, it changed the food industry forever!" Well, maybe one thousand albums is too many for one list, if one has to reach so deep into the pocket to complete it. I'm sorry to The Boo Radleys for this small rant, they definitely don't deserve it. They released a pretty okay album "Giant Steps", filled in 90% with a very average britpop songs, rather boring and mundane to go through, and in 10% with some noise/orchestral shoegazing, which elevates this album to a different level, but at the same time angers you, because it's apparent that it could be so much better. Funnily enough, that 10% doesn't come as a full song or two, but generally it's appearing in most of the tracks, but during the last ~30 seconds of the song. Like the band decided "Okay, we are our usual, boring stuff, let's experiment a bit on the last part, but only for a bit, not to make it too interesting!". Very annoying. As one would think, only 30 seconds of good music per song is not enough for the good rating (unless you're into grindcore).
Pretty g
A lot of different sounds but they all blend together pretty well all in all it's pretty good but a bit long.
Pretty fine little record. Sounded like "Diet" Smashing Pumpkins most of the way through, but the good thing about the Smashing Pumpkins is that even a soundalike band is still a damn fine listen.
Some good stuff on this record, lots of energy, variety and for the most part enjoyed it. Nothing too memorable, but a worthwhile listen.
Wow this is a rare case of me knowing absolutely 0 about an artist before going into an album. Exciting! Pretty standard early 90s music feel in the first few songs. lighter, janglyish yet dreamy guitars with the soft singing style. Okay weirdly venturing into psych or folk-psych territory. Mixing some electronic elements in here too. Maybe I misjudged off the first few songs because it's been a really diverse palate of styles. Still not totally my style but this seems like one of those under the radar albums that should get more attention
This maybe the most 90's sounding band that I have never heard of. It's just mid.
ikkje så verst
Not bad I suppose
Was decent, very strange band that I could get into the flow with but wasn’t totally blown away by. Very cool but not my style.
It was fine with glimpses of good
I didn’t hate or love this. It seemed very long, but never unlistenable.
Nothing here really embraced me and made me want more. There were some pleasant and catchy moments, but they just didn't last. Maybe some other time...
Every once in a while, I'd think, "Ooh, I like where this is going..." and then The Boos Radley would dodge and go a different and (to me) unsatisfying direction. There were a couple of songs that grew on me after further listening but for the most part, this was just ok.
Wasn't bad. Sounded like a generic 90's album. I'd throw some of the songs into rotation. I enjoyed the guided by voices vibes
Jangly jangles
Mad decent
Not bad, good background music
I groaned initially but listened with an open mind and it's quite enjoyable. Lots of different sounds and although not the most groundbreaking stuff I like the genre. No discernible hits but listened to it as a whole. I do wonder if it deserves to be here when so many other artists haven't managed it. Even so it's 4🌟🌟🌟🌟 because I like it.
Fín plata, held að ég hafi hlustað á extended version sem eru þrír geisladiskar. Rann smooth í gegn þó ég hafi stundum verið að spá hvort ég væri að hlusta á tvær/þrjár mismunandi hljómsveitir. þrjár og hálf.
tem umas psicodelia, mas meio esquecível
Didn’t get to listen too closely but hadn’t heard them before and enjoyed it.
This was real hit and miss for me. I really liked certain tracks (mostly towards the beginning of the album) and there were tracks that I really wanted to skip.
I liked the dub / reggae bass lines in a few tracks
interesting.
Its okay britpop. Better than soe of the other random.britpop bands on here. Very british endevor this book...
Pop. Ni fu ni fa.
This album is the third from The Boo Radleys. It's a psychedelic pop album otherwise known as shoegazing music - which is a otherworldly twist on indie alternative rock - that pulls influence from genres of reggae, pop, and orchestral. If you like songs that evolve as you listen to them, or psychedelic guitar playing, then this is the album for you. This album is a spacey trip for your ears. I enjoyed listening to this interesting album while I worked.
Safa
Shoegaze!
Interesting 90s alt rock album. Seemed a bit generic to me, but still enjoyable.
Quitos good
January 24th 2022. The best of this album IMO: - I Hang Suspended - Rodney King (Song for Lenny Bruce) - I've Lost the Reason The balance between calmness and aggressivity is a bit hard to endure sometimes. But I love me some britpop. 3.2/5
Time was not my friend. I only half listened to this. I thought it was OK.
Certainly an eclectic mix with quick transitions from raw guitars to acoustic ballads with some flugel horn and reggae bass thrown in. It holds up pretty well but I listened twice, admittedly with distractions, and it didn't really grab me.
Giant Steps - I immediately thought of John Coltrane's seminal album by the same name. Then I read the description, nope its not jazz its Shoegaze and Brit-Pop, yuk! I'm not a fan of those genres so I was expecting the worst. But what a nice surprise it turned out to be, this is a really good album. A lot of it is derivative from other bands but it all sounds very cohesive. Lazarus, White Noise, Wish I was skinny are all great, I can definitely favourite this on Spotify for future listenings.
bit more on the twee than the shoegaze
Good album. Very 90s. Interesting bit not too memorable
Interesting but inconsistent. Feels like two different bands mashed together at times
OK - little on the baggy and samey side - can't believe I've not listened to this before, I'm sure I had the CD!
They explore many different avenues and styles, which is great but there will be somethings you like and don't like. It was hard for me to stay consistent with this album b/c I could not find a common thread.
Some songs felt very modern indie. A pretty eclectic variety of styles, but I couldn't focus on this album
Three stars because of the overall alt-90s vibes, but I don't know if it's such an enormously great album. Just nice enough.
I think The White Noise Revisited cost them a star.
One of Coltranes best albums, really showing how he pushed forth the boundaries of what jazz could be. Wait, wrong album. Kind of generic and borring at times, but not bad.
solidan indie, kinda nice
Interesting though not entirely convincing. However, some tracks are really good.
good, but not as good as loveless.
Not bad
Maybe generous but I did listen to it
I'm not sure if I've heard of this band before or not. The music was new to me, but definitely sounded like it was produced in the 90s. Nothing spectacular, but I didn't hate it. Here's to "okay".
This is pretty good. I probably need to give it another listen to fully appreciate it, as I was a bit distracted today. Much more eclectic and diverse than I was expecting, surprised to hear some reggae vibes in some of the songs. 3 stars.
Would give 3.5 if I could. A good listen most of the time. Some more experimental things didn't feel like it was executed quite right. didn't feel like there were any breakout hits.
Very 90s but not bad.
3 tracks in - giving me London calling vibes. Very diverse. About halfway through and I’m much less impressed.
It's something
// Favs: – Score: Light to Decent 3
Quite fun, though got a bit bored of it towards the end
The orchestral arrangements are a nice touch. DK if I'm not in the mood or not cuz I'm usually a fan of the shoegaze sorta style but I thought it was kinda same-y after a while.
It was ok. Started with some good songs. But got boring in the second half.
Shoegaze 🥰 a bunch of really great deep cuts of the genre
I like Ride better
I love the Boo Radley's, but this album is all over the place.
This album has genuine moments of bliss and authentic rock music. However, they are broken apart by disjointed efforts and forgettable tracks, which limit the entire experience.
Not bad. Liked the early tracks more with a bit of a pop shine. Got a little my morning jacket-y towards the end
3/5. It's a disjointed album but I do feel there is something for everyone here. I definitely get the sense that these guys inspired radiohead. Favorite songs are Leaves and Sand, Best lose the fear, and White Noise revisited.
I might have liked them if I knew about them at the time.
If you like the white stripes you might enjoy this album
Enjoyable but I expected more from an album listed as Shoegaze/Dream Pop
Solid listen. Nothing super jumped out at me like it was a great song but nothing made me want to skip the track. Probably won’t search out again or be able to say “hey I’ve heard this song before”
Didn’t know much about this band. Had heard the name, and that was probably the reason I had never bothered to check them out. So good, so bad, so average. I liked parts of most songs and disliked parts on par. Yin of mesmerizing rhythms coupled with the yang of mediocre 90s pop. One song came close to good (Upon 9th and Fairchild), and one was fairly bad (Wish I was Skinny). Doesn’t get more solid 3 than this.
good album, wouldve given it a 3.5 but you cant do half ratings on here.
This is ok, some good ideas, but lots of it quite forgettable. Would probably benefit from repeat listening
Rokowisko alternatywne z elementami spogladania na buty, ktore wplata elementy psychodeliczne, 17 kawalkow na godzinnym albumie, o ile kompozycje instrumentalne mi siadly, bo czuc z nich 70s i klasyczne rokowanie, to tak samo wokal mi nie pasuje, choc rowniez jest stylizowany na tamten okres, kawalki ktore leca na plejke to wish I was skinny oraz thinking of ways i the white noise
This was some pretty solid 90s alternative. Dug some of the experimentation they attempted, but they seemed to fall back into that 90s sound before too long. Some pretty cool songs on there though.
Pop.
3.4* some good songs for sure but definitely some snoozers.
Not bad, very easy listen even with so many tracks.
Didn't finish it, but plan on going back to it.
*I would give a 3.5* Dig the sound. Not sure if its because it sounds more 'familiar' in some ways than the other albums (with some song exceptions, Changes/Born to Run/etc.) Enjoyed: 'Wish I Was Skinny', 'Best Lost the Fear' 'Take the Time Around'. Did not enjoy: Spun Around, 'I've Lost the Reason'.
Most of the album was good chill vibes.
Loved the variety, thought it stretchers on a bit too long though
Indie!
Another 'is this good/cool/weird enough?' album. They evidently have the ability to create good tunes but chose not to on this album.
Wikipedia's genre listing made this sound far more interesting than it actually is.
Booooooring. How is this an hour long.
3/10
Not too bad a start. Overall not a lasting impression
The sound mixing was really light on the vocals and heavy on the guitar. Lots of the songs started strong then descended into noise. Cool band name though.
#424 / 1089 Heard before? ❌ Revisit? ❌ Some nice sounding guitars in there, with feedback and fuzz, but the rest of the music is mild and warm and wrong kind of fuzzy... then it goes back to indie fucking folk pop shite. I'm sort of anxious to get back to the other music I was listening. This has nothing to hold me and I just feel skipping songs. Ergo it wont suit my taste and I deem it not good. It's not total shit, but not mediocre either, so 2/5
Interesting in that I couldn't decide if I liked it or not. Every time I thought I did, they would take a hard right turn into cacophonous noise.
Call it what you want, doogaze, britflop, bindie. Just don’t make me listen to this ever again. This album is listed as “dream pop.” It certainly makes me dream of a better album to pop up tomorrow. And Lazarus, huh? Stealing from David Bowie? /s
Meh, took me 3 days to listen to it, some songs hold up but mostly feels a bit weak.
This is a 90s album of all time. It doesn’t really do anything particularly interesting, or particularly badly. It’s just an hour of music you’d hear in the background of a movie or tv scene from some forgotten movie from 1997. ⭐️⭐️
Another album not really deserving to be on the "must listen before you die" list. It's an interesting album with some great moments, but like lots of albums in this genre, it drags on and overstays its welcome by a good thirty minutes or so. So many songs could've been cut down and been better for it. The majority of it is gone after even an intentional listen.
I like some shoegaze but this is really boring.
Nothing special here
No wake up Boo so it gets a 2
Too much a hat on a hat. Most of the tracks are a little bit too long.
I don't know. I really disliked it at first. That melancholy indie sound just felt so dry and uninteresting. That guitar sound is pretty wild though! It really worked on me with the screamy guitar stuff and more interesting arrangements. There's some excellent drumming too. I feel like I'm going to have to listen to it again sometime and I'm both angry about that and kind of looking forward to it.
Some interesting parts, but drags quite a bit Standout songs: Lazarus Ive lost the reason
Found it to be boring unmemorable alt Rock. Maybe just in a bag mood
All over the place. Not unlistenable, but just randomness. I don't really even see how this relates to Giant Steps besides the name only, despite it saying that it was an inspiration.
First song reminded me of shitty Dandy Warhols. Third song reminded me of shitty Belle & Sebastian. Just middling 90s alt sounds with occasional unlistenable distortion thrown in. Also too long.
Very mid rock interspersed with random noises, not a fan
I didn't like it until I got to Barney (…And Me) which had an enjoyable extended guitar hook in the outro. Then the next song Spun Around went back to being garbage.
This has sections where it was OK but largely it was fucking awful.
2/5
17 songs No song I'd return to, nor any one song that I can remember a melody or riff from. Nothing too terrible, just a bit of britpop slop innit?
Sounds like a random college band playing for tips in the 90s. Right down to the edgy breakdowns with horns. Probably played by the trumpet player from the ska band that opened for them.
The Boos have a lengthy album with Giant Steps. Heard of ‘em, but not familiar with them as I don’t think they really made it stateside. Strong start, weak though the middle. Lazarus is the top track, also enjoyed Upon 9th And Fairchild. A lot of the songs seemed like emo off tempo sulking. Spun Around and Run My Way Runway are horrible (noise) and should have been left on the cutting room floor. Bass player is the best musician in the band, didn’t like the blaring horns. (2.48*s) Mock (yeah) ing (yeah) bird (yeah)yeah (yeah)
A semi-interesting album from The Boo Radleys here. Giant Steps has some allure and mixes it up to keep the tracks unique. A little slow and too shoe-gazey for my taste but I like some of the experimentation. Did not like the introduction of some of the noise pop though. "Upon 9th and Fairchild" and "Wish I Were Skinny" are a good back-to-back. "Rodney King" also had some cool beats. Definitely a 90s record that I had never heard before. May not be a classic like To Kill a Mockingbird but it gets 2.42 stars from me.
While I didn't outright mind the first couple songs, I started to get annoyed when I felt like I heard them mostly repeated 10 more times. Not sure I was tuned out or not paying enough attention while working but this felt like a lot of the same noise for an hour. At surface level I was into some shoegaze covered in some miscellaneous genres for a bit, but after an hour of the same thing I was out. Too long, not diverse enough and not interesting enough to come back to. 1.92 stars
Well I didn’t like this at all. Seemed generic and boring. Didn’t enjoy the sound. 2/5.
Whole album felt really noisy. The tracks that didn't include all the feedback and squealy guitars were so much more enjoyable. I feel like this band is talented, but this music just isn't my style at all.
I am always going to love some shoegaze. The vibes are always chill. This album was good. Nothing stood out for me though. If you like shoegaze and this comes up, listen to it but you can probably move on afterwards.
Not to my taste
Best Track - "Wish I Was Skinny"
Appreciate their messages. Music not my jam. 2.5
Occasionally has snatches of something great but otherwise is buried three deep and seventeen tracks in tedious shoe gaze .
ok i guess, habs nicht wirklich anghört weil hab mich nicht danach gefühlt
Oh come on, in what world are The Boo Radleys something you need to listen to before you die? I only know one song from them from britpop documentaries/music compilations and it just sounds like F tier nothingburger britpop. Once again the author's 90s British bias is showing. And listening to the album in full just confirmed my suspicion that this album isn't anything spectacular 2/5
When to listen: Wanting to go on a disappointing trip. I was tempted to give this a 1, but there were moments of interest that I think merit a bump up, specifically "Rodney" and "Lazarus." At times it felt like a rip-off of the Beatles, at others like The Who's Tommy, but most of the time it's noise that doesn't interest me personally.
I thought I'd hate this album just by it's cover. Turns out it sounds pretty 90s but after a few tracks it's not interesting to me. It's like the album just turns into a flat background thing to listen to.
It was well done, a more talented band then I ever gave them credit for. I just wasn't a fan of the songs personally so it didn't really hit for me.
Screeching guitars...please no more. Its a total Nope from me for that bit. Then sweeping Orchestral arrangements flipped the music sheet a bit. What to do? What to do?
How did this make the list? nothing special. TLDL too long didn't listen
This is pretty weak stuff.
Not even Atticus Finch could defend this.
🎧Starts off pretty strong with I Hang Suspended. All goes downhill from there.
Some interesting guitar work but mostly boring
i didn’t like this album a whole lot, but the songs i liked i really liked, notably Wish I Was Skinny, Rodney King (Song for Lenny Bruce) and Run my Way Runaway. A lot of the songs felt like a combination of a worse MBV song mixed with a worse TMBG song and those are two of my favorite bands of all time so I will give this album a 2.5/5 but closer to a 2, unfortunately 3 songs is not enough to hold up an album with 17 songs.
Meh
better than i expected, but still a bit bland and too long. 2.5
I have never listened to this album before, but there was nothing here I haven’t already heard. Rather bland and unremarkable.
Between a 2 and 3 but I'm gonna say 2. Pretty mediocre album, style was sort of all over the place. Not terrible but nothing really stood out as memorable to me. It was also kind of on the long side
Im not sure what I was listening to. There were so many styles on this album that it was hard to make sense of it. I think they did some decent shoegaze but most of it was just kind of mid. Nothing really stood out. This another one of those albums that I didn’t need to hear before I died.
++: Rodney King (Song for Lenny Bruce), Barney (...and Me), Best Lose the Fear, Run My Way Runway, I've Lost the Reason +: Wish I Was Skinny, Leaves and Sand, Thinking of Ways, Take the Time Around +-: I Hang Suspended, Butterfly McQueen, If You Want It, Take It, Lazarus, One Is For -: Upon 9th and Fairchild, The White Noise Revisited --: Spun Around 4,0/10
Name aside I never much cared about the Boo Radleys. My limited exposure to them was: a La’s cover on a movie soundtrack and a Creation Records-led whisper/PR campaign that promoted Martin Carr as being a 90s Brian Wilson musical genius. The latter was enough to keep me on the hook, especially mixed with some Creation Records cred, but the former really sucked, taking maybe the most sublime song of my youth and adding so many ill-fitting choices it maybe made me think twice about the original. But, I’ll always hold out hope for an overlooked band, even one that did...that. Giant Steps is lauded as a big leap forward, enough to cheekily reference Coltrane, which is saying a lot for any rock band. They definitely became comfortable running everything through effects and tossing in random ideas, which they did well, but does that constitute a big leap forward if the songs are merely OK? That their next album contained the closest thing they had to a hit in the form of a Motown throwback, novelty tune says a lot.
Conflated. This album is ambitious, but would’ve benefited from additional production and a heaping of artistic focus. You can hear the shoegaze, the pop sensibilities, the reggae influence, the orchestral swell, but they’re all very much individual and just kind of smooshed together.
A bit too pop rock
This period of music in the UK was dreary. This offers nothing to change my view. Would I listen to it again? No.
not unlistenable which is high praise on this list
FAVO: Thinking of Ways, Best lose the fear
Best Song: Wish I Was Skinny. A bit more upbeat in tempo than the rest, with a kind of silly/thoughtful lyric. Worst Song: Run My Way Runway. There's just noise in the background of the whole goddamn song. Overall: It is difficult to articulate exactly what I don't like about this album. It is very lyrics-forward, yet none of the lyrics spoke to me, and the delivery is done in this shoegazey, no-one-in-this-small-town-understands-me kind of way that I just find obnoxious.
Doesn’t hit as well as it did in the ‘90s. I enjoyed the shoegazey elements more than the straight up indie rock. No lack of melodies or ideas in here, I understand why it’s on this list. The Boos just never really did it for me.
I have no idea why this album was included on this list. Also, it needed to be about 5 songs shorter.
I am so sick of britpop
Boo
So much meh. They were naff when I was a teenager, and are still naff and the definition of mediocre britpop now.
Odd choice for this list. Not sure if any of the songs really were a hit for me. Liked the vocals though
Feel like this was added by mistake instead of Coltrane. It is a fine indie album, with the usual attempt at broadening to orchestration and “avant-garde” sections. Wouldn’t turn it off, but won’t be seeking it out again
Okay so why is this amateur hour anti-catchy shit on this list when the ACTUAL GIANT STEPS by Coltrane isn't??? WTF???
Moments of interest on here but it was painfully long and the noise elements were not to my taste at all.
Probably the most schizophrenic album I've ever heard.
Not my thing.
I somehow never listened to this band in high school, despite being the right age, and this sort of aligning with my tastes. In another universe I could see myself really getting into this, but now, many years later I’m just not interested in what it’s offering.
A couple of good songs on this album but mostly meh.
Not my thing. It got a bit weird here and there.
I really tried to have a take on this.
Weird music
Completely forgettable. Not sure why this is on the list
Hey lookit, first one I don't recognize at all, album or artist or songs. Cool. I don't really even know what shoegaze constitutes, though I have a pretty good idea. Not sure it'll be my thing but you never know. Let's do it. Ohhh! Exclaimed Italianly. 64 mins. 1. I Hang Suspended - cool, that's what I thought shoegaze was. Hrm, I'm gonna try to get through this whole thing but I'm not sure I can do 64 mins in one sitting. The melody is nice on this one, I like the kind of non-functional cadence on the "I hang suspended on your word". Singer's voice is surprisingly soft? I thought it'd be a little more screamy. 2. Upon 9th and Fairchild - both songs so far have started with that ambient space. But ooh I do like the bassline on this one. It's funny, this isn't quite the kind of music that your parents would hate like grunge was in the US in the 90s, but it's getting there. I did enjoy the initial groove but midway through, I think the chorus, it gets sorta generic again. The tinny vocals remind me of some of the Gorillaz stuff later on, Damon Albarn used that a lot. Again that initial groove is cool, but then it's just loud. The distorted guitar doing the Sun Ra gag sorta. It reigns it back into melody later though. Hey a string section! That's neat actually, nice addition to the soundscape. Gives it body. 3. Wish I Was Skinny - and now something totally different, very clean tones. This is closer to the toothless sort of alt rock that I don't associate with what I thought shoegaze was, but I guess it counts fine enough. Hand claps and bright cymbals. Melody ain't bad. It's a cute song, but a little dull. I do like the horn addition, and I appreciate that these folks are incorporating more into their sound than just fuzz guitar wall of sound. Weird ending but it's kinda funny. 4. Leaves and Sand - there's that sound I expect. I hate to be this way, I'm not sure it's my favorite kind of sound. Still kinda noisy but without real gumption behind it. I think the lack of any syncopation contributes to that. The wall of sound thing is this case I understand and it's a sound of extreme loud to extreme quiet for effect. Subito over many bars. But I dunno. If you're gonna be that loud you better be playing something I can move to. I did like the melody contour when the singer started up though. 5. Butterfly McQueen - okay I actually would rather not have the trumpet here. I dig the groove a little before the wall of sound starts wall of sounding. Yknow this album was inspired by Coltrane apparently, but I wonder if that's just in the title and the wall of sound phrase? His wall of sound doesn't mean the same thing it does here. I like the way this one ends and leads into the next song, Youtube's endless ads and DIAs endless bullshit kinda ruined the transition but I still got the idea. 6. Rodney King - have to pause here to do something but so curious what this will be like. Hmm the beat gives me pause but I'm letting it ride. This track is p simple but I like that the volume is used in conjunction with the higher pitched softer melody. I probably still wouldn't dance to this, but I could see someone doing so. Someone that dances like Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction. Hey the lyrics are pretty clever here. Just 3 lines, but fairly powerful for what they are supposed to be. Not the most powerful I've heard about the subject matter, but not so bad for some white British guys right after it happened. Synth ending was nice, if not a non-sequitur completely. 7. Thinking of Ways - oh nvm it's a transition again. I should have hit this on Spotify or my own cpu. I see some people making connections to the Beach Boys here, I think I would have gotten that too. I like this guy's voice, wish it was on more Brian Wilsony stuff like this instead of loud pre-emo. "I'm thinking of ways I can get out of things just like always" has a great contour and they stick the melody line on it to boot. Pretty nice there. It is around this time however that I begin to look at my watch, I think the run time here is going to knock this one down a peg or two. Plus they love that guitar that sounds like an ewe and a large metal door being fed through a chipper a little too much for me. 8. Barney - kinda Blues Traveler-y? Again, nice melody but a bit toothless. I think there's a middle ground between their wall and this, and I think it lies in a little bit of syncopation. A line or two, not just held chords. Oh as I say that, there's a hit on two to lead into the chorus. Immediately made me pay attention and blew some life into this, so I think I'm right on that. I like the bassist's tone, overdriven enough for the verses then that real fuzz for the instrumental breaks. The harmony vocal thing in the middle didn't really work. There are more than a few non-seqs that don't FULLY work. I know that's subjective by their nature almost, but eh. Not my thing, at least I don't think it works well here. 9. Spun Around - a little Doors intro with the organ and dry bass and stuff. But, I visibly made a face of slight disgust when the vocals come in with that noise around them. Again, I think the actual melody is quite nice and I'm sure the soundscape is just right for some people. I think it's distinct and interesting, but I wouldn't put it on my stuff or seek it out to listen. 10. If You Want It, Take It - yeah that Albarn style of singing again. I guess it's actually Boo Radley style. This sounds like what would be ubiquitous in a 90s or 2000s film about a freshman at college "just trying to score". I guess I don't mean that in a derogatory manner, that kind of thing has surely aged poorly but has its place as a time capsule to a specific emotion. For me, at least. Never looked up any of those soundtracks though... 11. Best Lose the Fear - thought we were dropping into 7 for a second there. Again, I like the addition of the organ here. Good extra texture. Again, nice enough melody - I like the chorus. Looser feel on this track than the rest. It works for the vox but everyone kinda on their own in the rhythm section, ehh. And I liked the organ, but the clarinet isn't really working. Sounds sorta like a school band and there was one friend that played clari so just let him noodle around a bit. 12. Take the Time Around - so loud upfront, that's actually unpleasant to me. That fuzz is drowning the whole track, it had to be deliberate but man I don't like it very much. Goddamn and the double solo is even louder. I sound so old but like, this is approaching noise just for the sake of it. If you wanna be loud, be funky! Damn. Be loud and have a sick ass groove that's stank worthy, otherwise it's just pain. I didn't even pay attention to anything else in this track aside from how noisy it is. 13. Lazarus - mkay some New (Nu? Neo?) Reggae, kinda. OH SHIT WHY DO I KNOW THIS SONG?? OH SHIT ITS THE END CREDITS TO THE TELEVISION SHOW LAZARUS BY THE COWBOY BEBOP GUY! WATANABE! That's really a funny thing I never thought of, his other shows are so funky. Bebop and Space Dandy are in rotation for me all the time cuz they're so good. I do like the synth melody that is played here and the half-ambient bit in the middle. Was this a hit for them? It's probably one of the better ones on the album. Again, dudes regular old melody writing is pretty good. Very sound and smart. I think it comes through better here than some other songs. 14. One Is For - interesting arranging choice again, cello and vibes. Short one, more of an interlude. Not much to say here from me. 15. Run My Way Runway - again, I get that they're going for a thing here but I don't like it. The oscillating noise, the trumpet back to noodle. I'm trying not to check out for the rest of this album but I'm really struggling. Even with the melodies, which again are very strong and singable! It stinks cuz I think they could be on a better album. Stopped this one 20 secs early, legit hurt my ears. 16. I've Lost the Reason - breath of fresh air here, chill and quiet. Same thing as before, nice changes and melody. Unfortunately, we have a U2 problem here. Kinda too little too late. Plus, after the intro we're back to the standard fare about 1.5 mins in. 17. The White Noise Revisited - sadly, I just couldn't be arsed. I kinda skipped through this one and then shut it off. Getting really really tired of the sound now, vocal effects etc. Sorry. Some things to note: I like the melodies a little more often than not, I like their use of the orchestral and jazz instrumentation, and their changes on the songs are kept interesting and not so predictable. I think I like the feeling this album evokes. I was never into shoegaze or emo when it was popular but of course I was around people who were. It gives me nostalgic feelings for childhood, like middle school time. But aside from that and some nice melody writing on maybe 70% of the thing, it was just sorta loud and incoherent to me (oh god that's the Weird Al lyric in his Nirvana parody). Incoherent musically, I mean. Like, the addition of brass and wind could have been neat but it seems like they just got a cat and let the person noodle over grooves that don't fit that vibe. Not even particularly good noodling, just noodling. In addition, this album is waaaaay too long. Like 20 mins too long. I could have cut it at 45 and it still may have been a tad much. I had to cut it in half because I left work and went home, came back a few hrs later. Still was a bit of a slog. But, I'm glad I did cuz I'm not sure I could have taken 64 mins of this sound. I can't tell whether this should be a high 2 or a straight 3. I think I'm gonna settle on 2 for now, may change later. **coming back later, I think straight 2 is appropriate actually.
Meh
Not my thing, but not actively offensive
