Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Not sure what I listened to, but I think I liked it?

first thought: what is this?! second thought: who is this? third thought: space prog ....rock? what is this genre? fourth thought: its okay for background music if you are in a space-y mood.

Different. Nice.

I've never heard of this album or artist before, and damn, it was a sonofabitch to track this album down (if you're having trouble finding it, disc 1: https://soundcloud.com/dj-jo-public/ltj-presents-logical-progression-cd-a-mixed-by-jopublic-1996-intelligent-dnb disc 2: https://soundcloud.com/dj-jo-public/ltj-bukem-presents-logical-progression-cd-b-mixed-set-original-1996-version-intelligent-dnb ). I was trying to pull this album up last night, and when I finally found it, my wife said, "that's your album tomorrow? I'm so sorry." I told her I don't mind music like this, and she waited a moment before saying "we are very different people." Anyway, I don't have a lot to say about this album, other than I enjoyed listening to it. Granted, I had it playing while I was grinding away on some pretty mindless tasks at work, so it made for a nice soundtrack to my day. I have no idea of the impact or cultural significance of this album, but it was a nice listen, despite its length.

I'd wondered if there would be any drum and bass on this list.... This is much more chilled than it could've been, makes it listenable on a Wednesday. If it was much heavier it wouldn't have been so listenable. There was a brief time about 17 years ago with the right substances, where I was into DnB, probably still would be with the right substances tbf. Saying that, I didn't mind it at all. It's chilled enough to be background music, without ever really becoming too intrusive. Couldn't pick any tracks out but might be back for background music Expected to give a lower score, but pleasantly surprised

Good background music

Such precise. So logic. Cool stuff, but kind of all sounds the same to me.

Genre: Jungle, drum and bass 1996 It starts with a quote from Ferris Bueller's Day Off. It is definitely an album that you can listen to and enjoy, or play it in the background and hardly notice it is there. Both are perfectly fine. The sounds are fresh and interesting. If you're not into it, then you would find it boring - but still good for an elevator ride or a listen while you study.... Where does one song end and the next begin? Hard to rate any individual tracks on this album. Rating: 3.5

While I enjoyed this and it worked well as I was sitting on a plane, it overall was pretty samey throughout and easily blends into the background, meaning it wasn't too memorable to me.

This was fine as background music.

Outstanding drum and bass compilation. Sublime mix of the blippy and briskly paced with the atmospheric and dreamy. It could have been a bit shorter, but overall an excellent listen. Album was not available on Spotify and as far as I can tell, the versions on YouTube are incomplete.

It turns out the spotify link isn't the actual album... anyway I found the actual one. Wouldn't want to sit down and listen to it end to end, but it's not bad background music for tidying. Probably better at a rave

I actually enjoyed this a lot more than I expected. It's very much 'hold music' but it's surprisingly satisfying, and worked very well as background music whilst working!

Kinda cool sounding, but it gets really repetitive. Might be ok in the background while doing something else. Some of the pieces sound like rig tones.

Fine ambient sound

Way too long, but still some good DnB.

Listening note: this can be found on youtube, if spotify does not currently have it. This was a very long listen. Not great for active listening but excellent for background listening.

3 sgtars.

Electronic smooth jazz!

Mediocre and a very long album. It's really tiresome, when you have to listen to full album of drum and bass songs, especially if they are written in the same tempo. I felt like I was in Guantanamo during one of the interrogations, torturing me with the songs in the background. But it wasn't that bad, a single song might be actually pretty good to listen, probably any song. Just don't do it with the whole album.

Ror2 soundtrack is better

Someone on one of these (many, many) 1990s UK electronic albums on this list commented that it sounds like PS1 music and I'll never not think that. I'm sure if you've done a bunch of drug and are at a club and it's 1996 and you're just seen an episode of friends or whatever then this is probably incredible. As music to listen to at work, it's more than serviceable. I have a hard time differentiating from track to track. It's wild that this is a compilation of 5+ artists. It's wild that it's even more than 1!

3.4 - People who know and care about drum-and-bass describe this record in superlatives ("landmark", "masterpiece"). The best I can say is that I certainly like it better than some other well-regarded D&B records I've heard (I gave Goldie's "Timeless", for example, a rating of 1.6). I also like how these tracks keep the mind focused. But, around the 90 minute mark, the breakbeats gets very old and very irritating.

not bad while working

I listened to all of the tracks except Logical Progression. The idea of a track over an hour long wasn’t appealing at all. Overall, nice background music, but I didn’t see the importance as a bass and drum album. 3/5.

Just meh boots and cats.

58/100

First time listen, surprisingly OK.

Mellow jazz influenced D'n'B. Cool.

I wanted to really dislike this - wine bar D&B. It may lack the dirtiness of proper buzzing off yer tits from back in the day, but it's decent. The album has a pace from start to finish. You never feel out of breath, or as though you may drift off. That's the DJ journey, innit. Wine bar D&B...

This was fine for background music in that new boutique, but I didn't quite get why it was special (and why there are so many more albums of this genre). I was totally confused by the disconnect between the track listing of the Wikipedia article and the album online, which seemed to link all the artists in their own track. What am I even listening to? Absolutely fine, but never remarkable to me. I got really, really bored.

In almost 800 albums I have never done this but I'm going to rate this one having only listened to half. First, it was hard to find --- the apple music link took me to Logical Progression Level 1, which was not the same as the Logical Progression album described in the Wikipedia page. So I listened to a few tracks from the Level 1 album and then found a YouTube playlist for what I think was the intended album but that was LONG and occasionally interrupted by ads so I feel like I've done due diligence with this one. I did not hate it and in fact found it a reasonably enjoyable soundtrack for much of my day's activities and I'l keep the YouTube tab open in my browser to listen to a bit at a time and finish this one up (since I am a completist). But I'm not going to do that today and I'd like to move on so consider this three-star rating for only Disc 1.

Yeah we needed D&B to be represented on the 1001 and I would be zero help at picking such albums.

Moody, nice textures. Every song sounds similar since they're all 175 BPM, but that's D&B.

Seemed like a precursor to modern DnB, was okay

Too samey? Too long? Probably true. But I also found it to be a breezy listen. Probably because I was doing something else while listening, which I’d say is the best way to listen to it. A strong 3, I would say

It gets better as it goes on, but this is very tasteful wallpaper for 90s hipster shops. There are a few more exciting tracks, but this largely makes 165bpm feel a bit too tasteful for my liking.

Solid spacey study tracks

Fine as sonic wallpaper

Best Song - Destiny

I can’t find this on Amazon Music, but I listened to it quite a lot in 1996/97. I recall particularly enjoying Western. I’ll give it a medium 3 stars.

Jungle, drum and bass, música del espacio.

It was technoish/electronica. It was alright. Apparently there are two albums but the second is more of compilation? I only listened to one album. Better than 2 not really a 3. I will round up.

One vastly prefers the dreamier, loungier bits (e.g., "Chameleon") and Steve Reich-ier cuts (e.g., "Dannys Song"). Too many track over-rely on that skittering, ultra-fast drum track, which hasn't exactly proved itself to be timeless. One prefers a bit more bass in his drum&bass, one guesses. One can't help but remember fondly the compilations of this era (Buddha Bar, Ultra Chill, Cafe Del Mar) and wonder whether this is that much or even a little better. Given the decade of origin, it's no shock that the whole thing is overlong and overdone. Or that it's a compilation, which makes one question whether that's outside the rules for inclusion in this esteemed collection.

This was a grim reminder that, although I love Drum & Bass very much now, it was a bit crap in the early days. The era of "classic" Drum & Bass is littered with this atmospheric, slow, abrasive and unmelodic music. I'm reminded of Goldie and Roni Size, artists I don't particularly like. It's actually quite amazing how far the genre has come from these early days when it wasn't so great. However, this leaves me with this long and quite dull album to review. It's very chilled indeed, to the point of being boring in parts. Drawn out, overblown, too chilled, horrible vocals, very much off its time. It's aged really badly, which is a shame. This should have been a strong 5-star album, but it's a rather weak 3-star one.

I think we can all agree that 2+ hours of drum and bass is a little too long. Luckily the music is pretty good while it lasts. It’s airy, cold, drumm and bassy. I could have done with perhaps half of it to be brutally honest - but I enjoyed it way more than I initially thought I would.

This album is a pain in the ass to figure out what exactly it is. Youtube has different than wikipedia and is different than spotify, which it isn't on.. except all the songs seem to be if you search for them... anyway it's pretty fine music. nothing special and nothing I haven't heard before. makes for good background music. I guess historically interesting?

A perfect representation of where modern electronic music came from—for reference only.

Although it’s not my flavor, I can find a lot of value in this record, and drum and bass music in general, for those looking to study or rave.

My usual mystification with the appeal of drum and bass. Even the genre name is like, what were you expecting? The repetition, the goofy effects sounds and samples (Ferris Bueller? Really?). Perusal of the internet informs me that my reaction is typical of the "uninitiated". At this point I don't think my initiation is likely.

Nothings dates like dance music!

interesting sound, bass/drum. Seemed overall pretty solid.

Another electronic music album, which is always welcome given how very little I listen to this style of music outside this project. Being exposed to this genre here is helping to open up my ears to what's happening in the songs put together by electronic music artists. I happen to like this album particularly well. My ear was interested in the melodies, harmonies, and rhythms -- some of the drumming is fantastic (e.g., 'Above & Beyond' and 'Jazz Lick' to name two) so I found myself hanging in there with it. Good stuff!

So. Long. So. Similar.

"Album" 17 Disclosure - The original album is not available for streaming on Spotify. Luckily some user created a playlist of most of the first disc, but not the second, live-mix. This album is a product of its time, and a great representation of drum and bass music. It's more atmospheric than hardcore or hardstep, so there are really nice melodies throughout. If you do not like dance music, this is not for you, as the break beats, while switching up often, will get repetitive and obnoxious. I really enjoyed it, but I'm not going to say it is more than what it is - music to be enjoyed in a dance or club setting. There were definitely some guilty pleasure moments when I heard some of the old-school vocal samples and even some whale calls. Another generous 3*

I almost don’t want to admit this but… I don’t hate it? I’ve been playing Neon White lately (a must play imo, check it out) which has a lot of D&B on its OST, and I didn’t realize how much of an impression it made on me until now. Not something I would casually listen to, but I get it. It’s vibey. Can also appreciate that it’s a defining album for the genre.

Not my cup of tea to listen to in general. Might be good in certain circumstances.

Never listened. Expectations: None - Verdict: Alright - This was a a difficult one to find the correct version of. The opening track doesn't get me particularly excited and it is a long album. It's alright but I prefer a more languid, groovier take on electronic music.

I'm intrigued to get an album from the 1990s I've never heard of – I had a major music magazine habit during that decade, so normally even if I've never listened to the artist before, I at least recognised the name (looking at you, Barry Adamson and Drive Like Jehu). This one though passed me by on all levels, and I can kind of see why. It's not unpleasant but it didn't make much of an impression. It's also waaay too long.

Oh my! 3 hours of music here. Not a chance I will finish. I could maybe see some songs as the background music for Tetris or video games. The drums were the best part. It just wasn't for me.

I can see what motivates people to listen to trance and D&B but I need a bit more melody and structure in my EDM. So this one doesn't hit as hard. Jazz lick and reflections was really cool but not enough to drive this home as an amazing album. I'm sure it's great, but in my naivete D&B/Trance is lost on me.

This was sooooo repetitive at parts, idk. I think that's a quibble with the genre more than any individual artist though. Also, I thought compilation albums were banned from the list? It got better in the second half though I guess. I found myself wishing the song would end just so I could get a breath of fresh air from the incessant beat.

Had a tough time finding this. Not available on the 2 primary streaming services I use. Then I looked on Apple Music and, for some reason, there it was. Started listening and was puzzled. All instrumental. Kinda ‘new agey’ and definitely not good. I don’t know why, but I decided to check the Wikipedia page. I don’t usually do this if I’ve never heard an album; I’d rather not be biased by other opinions or info before I hear it. But I did, and the track names didn’t match. Whatever that is on Apple Music, it’s not this. There is a two-part version on YouTube that has track names that match the Wikipedia entry. All of this to say, drum & bass is fine, but I don’t need this much of it at any one time.

The Good: We get to apply logic… The Bad: Seems that we don’t understand the progression though… The Ugly: The blood pouring out of my scalp as I am still scratching to figure out why the fuck I had to listen to this… Let it be said, there are moments for music like this… those moments involve a certain age, consumption of certain substances, presence of certain people. I checked non of the above boxes when I was listening to this… on top, fucking album is impossible to find via the streaming services, which should tell you something… Worse, 2 of them fucking albums. 2* for wasting my time twice!

Rätt meh elektro

Felt like in a fashionable store in the mall. While I am sure this is groundbreaking, it sounds like my friend after he got his first music programming software. Drum & Bass asks the question "How many ways can we reinterpret the Amen Break.

I appreciate a bit of variety on the list but this was so repetitive and didn’t really work outside of a club context. D and B is not my favourite genre as it tends to be very formulaic. The progressive mix at the could have been flagged up as I was relistening to half the album before I realised!

All sounded the same

*sigh*.

Felt like a 4 hour album instead of 2.. Got pretty boring towards the end.

Feels a little too early ‘90’s

There was no progression? Just over and over and over?

This (long and impossible to track down) coming so close to Prince’s Sign o’ the Times (long and perfect) brought my generator journey to an abrupt halt that lasted for about a month. While this was a superior experience to the last drum and bass album I got on here (MJ Cole’s Sincere) it was truly a baffling experience to try to unravel its mysteries. Namely, if an album is truly a “must listen” you’d think it would be accessible on streaming services without missing songs, or at least have a Wikipedia page where its track list and personnel are recorded in detail. Alas, not even this low low bar has been cleared. Instead, confusingly, there is a similarly titled, similarly covered compilation with an entirely different track list on common services like Spotify or Apple Music. When you finally track down the correct album on YouTube, no less than 20% of its 2 hour run time has been blacked out because presumably the perpetual rights to some samples were not cleared. Why is this an album you have to hear before you die? Who knows, I guess you had to be there.

Sorry, I just did not like this. I only listened to the first CD, but that was enough.

Not sure i was the target audience. 3 hours of drum and bass totally a mood dependent album

Drum 'n' bass seems to pop up at awkward moments. Back when I was in first year in college, there was a big night out during “Rag week”. Rag week began as a sort of charity fundraising initiative I believe, but by the time I had landed in college, it had become an endurance test, where instead of going to lectures and learning, students would go completely nuts, drinking and partying for a full week nonstop. I was having drinks with some friends in their student accommodation. This was an estate of absolutely identical houses and apartments, custom-built to keep noisy students away from other residents. My friends lived with an unknown number of other strangers under the same roof - it was impossible to tell who lived there and who was just dropping by. I’m sure they wondered the same about me. We headed into the college bar to see a Nirvana tribute band. It was too packed to get in, which might have been for the greater good, as the faint sound of a butchered version of “Lithium” drifted out from inside the bar. As we left to go to another bar, I noticed that somebody had climbed up a tree, outside the bar entrance. Their friend was throwing anything he could find at them to try to get them down. That’s the kind of night it was. Much later, as all the bars and clubs closed, we were all trying to make our way back to the student accommodation, where we had some more booze stashed. I somehow ended up separated from everyone else, but managed to hop in a taxi and headed to the house. I was one of the first ones back somehow. I arrived at the house to find one of my friend’s faceless housemates to be the only other person at home. I sat in the kitchen with this stranger, making drunken small-talk as I waited for my friends to arrive. It was awkward. We had nothing in common. He put on some music to fill the awkward silence. It was some drum ‘n’ bass style of music, very similar to the songs on “Logical Progression”. Not my scene at all. But we sat there in silence listening. After an excruciating amount of time, I spotted my friends through the kitchen window getting out of a taxi… and proceeding to enter the house next-door. Yep. I had just spent the last who-knows-how-long sitting listening to drum ‘n’ bass with a complete stranger in a house that I had just wandered into, next-door to my friend’s house. This album was very hard to find. Thankfully it wasn’t the 3 and a half hour playlist that the app links to on Spotify, but I eventually found it on the Internet Archive, and it was still a struggle to get through. I’m not a fan of drum ‘n’ bass. It doesn’t repel me like some genres do, but it’s just not something I actively enjoy or fully “get”. As I listened, I found myself back in that stranger's house, trapped in polite small-talk, with drum ‘n’ bass making an awkward situation even more awkward. Drum ‘n’ bass seems to pop its head up at moments like that. One time on a trip with some friends to London, after a heavy night the night before, we were tired and a little worse for wear. But a brother of one of my friends, who lived there, was keen to show off his local knowledge and bring us to some of the best spots in Shoreditch. We walked all the way from Soho, and by the time we got to the area, the only place still serving was a grimy old pub called The Horse & Groom. After walking all that way, we went in for a weary drink. Everyone else in the pub was having a very different night to us. A DJ was playing a set of drum 'n' bass, sounding quite similar to what I heard on this album. We spotted an old arcade game that was, for some bizarre reason, located right in the middle of the dancefloor. So there we were, knocking elbows with gurning locals who danced aggressively from one leg to another, as we played Sensible Soccer, an old Atari game I used to play as a kid. In the middle of the dancefloor. Drum 'n' bass soundtracking another awkward moment. Did I enjoy this album? No. It took effort to get through. It's not the worst, but definitely not my scene. And it's not music to sit down and listen to. It's music that pops up in weird situations.

I'll be honest. I didnt listen to the whole thing. But from what I heard it was cool and interesting

Techno beats, no words. Good drum lines. I don't think there is enough here to keep me interested but it's not bad. Maybe could be used as background music for something.

I tried, but I couldn't finish this one. It was hard to access - J was able to listen to it on the Internet Archive, but it was glitchy. Beyond that, it's just really long and I couldn't get into it. I liked the energy but it didn't hold my attention.

Why. Why do you give us these speaker test albums. I can hear the highs and lows. I didn’t need an entire album of awful hold music. You can keep your “importance of this album nonsense”. The only reason this receives 2 stars is the obvious production value.

Nightclub in the Amazon Rainforest. Chase scene from a Predator movie. Apocalypse Now at the disco. How does one rate such things.

Good for background music, but not a whole lot more. Very little difference between the songs. The songs themselves don't have much variety, but I suppose that's kind of the point. DNF'd this because it was just too long and every song sounded the same.

Not my style

off the bat it makes me think of an early 2000's transition song for a movie but also giving video game at the same time. it has this vibe that reminds me of other times and places. instrumentals are hit or miss for me especially this type of sound so it's not my favorite but could be fitting in the right setting.

I don't particularly enjoy electronic all that much. I can see its appeal, but to my ears it all sounds very similar to what I've experience from electronica before. Droning beats, overlaying rhythms, synths, electronic drums, pounding bass, occasional ethereal female voice, etc. I can't quite differentiate it from other similar songs I've heard in the past. It may be good for focusing or working, but it's just not working for me.

I listened to one disc, moving now to the next, and I really don't know what to say... It makes me feel a certain way, I'll try to describe it later this evening, after I finish listening. I don't really know what to say, again. This music has a power to it. Especially on me I guess, because I heard this kind of music around when I was a child. This textures are familiar to me on a instinctual level. But listening to it today It didn't make me feel good. It made me feel uneasy, and in a way lonely. This are lonesome sounds. Technically, I will say that the first disc is better. More interesting and better composed and produced. It flows really good for almost an hour. The second Disc, although 15 minutes shorter, feels much longer. I could do without it. Well, when it comes to numbers. I'll try to sum up everything. It's too long, I won't be coming back to it. But this musical has a power that I can't deny. An ambivalent 2.5 seems right to me, this time. I hope for a lighter album tomorrow.

It was fine for background music. Went on way to long.

Best Song: Demon's Theme. I dug the bird call shoutouts. Worst Song: Horizons. I think my brain was just fatigued by this point. Overall: A really "maximalist" electronic album. It's quite busy, in an almost distracting way, that makes it difficult for me to imagine when I would want to listen to it again. The whole thing just clatters past at the same, unrelenting RPM, full of noise. I begged for even moments of reprieve. Sometimes, less is more.

This wasn't on my streaming service and couldn't be arsed to track it down, so the logical progression was to play a Lamb Of God album instead. In any case, I'd read the reviews, and that was enough to justify my actions. Heard before ❌️ Listened this time ❌️ Revisit ❌️ Default ★★☆☆☆ (4/10) Total reviewed : 327 Already owned : 76 Purchased : 15 To buy : 4 Nope : 232

Solid background music that highlights the innovative work done in a genre I respect but don’t get too excited about.

Not even bad but the fact that the original isn't even on Spotify and it's 2 hours long annoyed me a little

An okay album, I liked Reflections the most.

I respect the existence of it, and I could maybe see myself putting it in in the background while I'm doing work or something, but it really doesn't interest me at all.

After listening to the weird, wrong version of this album on Spotify, I was not impressed. That would make for any rash 1 star. The actual album was definitely better, but maybe only because it's half as long. That said, it's still far too long, and the sound is meh overall. I think this album is seriously borderline, and I could go either way between a 1 and a 2.

Not for me, missed the club scene

Good background music I guess, but not overly my thing. Also dislike that it’s a compilation album. Sure, if you put all the best songs from any artist on an album and call it a “must listen”, but it doesn’t work like that… Rating: 4/10 Favorite Song: Solar System

It may well have been seminal but it’s still a drum machine loop for over 1 1/2 hours. Drum n Bass is not bad but it’s clearly not best enjoyed in album format.

Difficult to find, so difficult to rate. It's not on Deezer, but it does seem to be on YouTube. However, the versions I found had blank sections where tracks were removed for copyright reasons. Fair enough to want to be compensated for the music you've created, but then maybe make sure it's on streaming services? Anyway from the parts I did hear it just sounds like all drum and bass/jungle music ever made. Not especially interesting to me, but also totally inoffensive

This was fine to have in the background, but not really anything I am interested in. A bunch of electronic music that never really went anywhere (in my opinion). I felt like I was playing a computer game set in 2099 that was made in 1999.

I’m not into this drum and bass thing

im sure on drugs it's fun... 2.5

Too long. A little boring

Techno sounds all the same to me. This album was way too long.

I listened to the YouTube version recommended by the top-voted reviewer. Presumably this is the "correct" version (as compared to the album on Spotify), but it isn't timestamped, and not being able to tell which track is which makes for a tough listening experience. This music itself necessarily terrible, but it's so damn repetitive that I wouldn't fault anyone for slapping down a 1-star review and distancing themselves from LTJ Bukem as soon as is convenient. There's extremely little in the way of innovation here, and hardly any lyrics to speak of that might help in distancing this record from the thousands of others recording in the 90s. If LTJ Bukem has any talent, he's trying very hard to hide it. And yet the music is strangely inaccessible at the same time. Lack of melody/hooks is a big factor here. Demons Theme starts off pretty strongly with a sort of hip-hop-influenced space rock beat. Plenty of synths to go around, along with beats that are kind of grating after the first few minutes. Extremely repetitive without any sort of progression. The percussion sometimes changes, I guess. But I'm starving for more variation in the sound. The female vocals in Dannys Song(?) stand out quite a lot, and though they get a little stale throughout the track's 6-minute runtime, at least there is some kind of musical capability demonstrated here. I also like the synths in Peshay(?) (or Coolin Out); without the sterile, machine-esque sound of the electronic percussion at the very beginning of the track, I can almost believe that something good will come of this. Something inventive, perhaps? (Spoiler: no.) 2/5 Key tracks: Demons Theme, Dannys Song

589/1001 2026.04.09 😴😴🌑🌑🌑

There is nothing at all that I will remember about this album’s tracks. It set a decent mood but there is nothing to latch on to as particularly interesting. Also, it could’ve been a tenth of the length and it would’ve had the same effect.

2/5. Not for me, so won't dive too deep into this. It's really tough to listen to this as a non-DnB-fan. It's not bad, but it's so boring to me. I genuinely wonder what's going through the heads of people who listen to this with excitement or rapt attention. It feels and sounds like the background music that an early 2000s game developer kindly included to play in the background as your 9gb sci-fi strategy game installed. Shout out to the literal saint that posted the actual album links in their review. I took one look at the 3h27m runtime of the copy that is currently on Spotify and prayed to Christ that it was a different version. He answered my (and I presume your) prayers this day.

I didn’t get a lot out of this album, and was pretty tired of listening to it by the end. In small doses this music style is fine, but for several hours? No thank you.

Eh. Not my jam.

Not really my type of music

Too monotonous... and I like breakbeat. And I was a 90s raver! But more of a progressive trance girl ;)

Not Found

It was like I was listening to a soundtrack to some lo-fi racing game from the early 00’s.

Another album that probably sounds better in a different context. 3h:27m seemed intimidating at first but thankfully most of that is just in the last song or two. Still a pretty cool album, albeit a little simple.

the music equivalent of waiting in line

It was fine. I guess.

An extra star for something very different got cancelled out by a star subtraction for every song being so repetitive. You’re going to have seven minute song averages and then give me almost nothing new five minutes in?

*2013. Mostly Instrumental. *This could easily be the soundtrack for a space movie. *Spacey and electronic is not my vibe. RATING - 5/10

I’m not sure if I listened to what I was supposed to, but in any case I got irritated by whatever it was pretty quickly. DNF.

Honestly super generic. Nothing about this album excited me.

Kan egentlig mange ting. Bliver desværre en smule for ensporet til min smag. Prøver at være Berlin uden at være det...

First, this links to logical progression level 1, not logical progression. Level 1 is the followup album, while the original is the one on the list. Not that it matters too much because they sound more the same than different. How does a complication of different artists sound so monotonous? The whole thing sounds like the soundtrack to a ps2 era game about snowboarding. Not for me.

There's such a thing as too much drum n bass, and I reached that limit somewhere during the runtime of this one. It's all a bit samey and the near constant stream of ad libbed hip hop vocals seemingly trying to indoctrinate me into the cult of jungle didn't help. There's some nice sounding stuff here, but even for an EDM initiate this is not my tempo.

I'll be honest, I really didn't need 3.5hrs of 2003 Toonami spaceship commercial music. I'm sure this was groundbreaking at the time, and after reading up on it, the techniques used for composition were really innovative. But the songs were such a slog to get through. I only enjoyed about 10% total of listening, then I eventually just had to wait for each song to end. I wish there was more build, more flow, and more dynamics when it came to pitch. No favorites off of this one.

It’s not bad it’s just not really my thing.

I don’t understand why this is on the list. It is a club DJ set mix.

Not my type of DJ

This was super boring and buns. And stupid long.

yet again-WHY is this on here?? nothing but repetitive beats played over, and over, and over...... boring elevator music

This is by far the longest album I've ever listened to and after 20 minutes I was already thinking "How much longer is this going to go on?"

Why is a compilation album featuring over a dozen artists on this list? There are literally tons and tons of electronic music compilations, enough for a 1001 Albums list of their own. So why can't "Logical Progression" be on that list instead of the actual 1001 Albums list? Anyway, "Logical Progression" has some ok beats; LTJ Bukem's tracks are the best on the album by far. Its two major problems are being way too long and way too repetitive; I was knackered by the end. 2 stars for "Logical Progression".

Curiously enough, the only thing that went through the mind of the bowl of petunias as it fell was Oh no, not again.

ok but long

why does he sound so familiar, I remember this name - this is such a '2000s sound', but he's my least fave - his sound is too frenetic for me. Nicola Conte, Papik, Dimitri From Paris all his peers and all waaaaay better in my opinion.

To be fair I kinda skipped through this a bit - it was very long and very tedious.

Generally I would say I like drum & bass - although far from an enthusiast - however I wouldn't listen to this except as background music while doing something else (for which it's fine). I found myself checking the length of nearly every track on this one, which isn't a good sign.

3 hours of nonsense from "the prime innovator of jungle" So what is jungle? What is this? This is your brain too much german techno ass sniffing.

First album I didn’t make it all the way through. Not that it was bad but that I didn’t have 3 hours of time to sit and listen. This is either for my next rave party or a long drive in slow traffic.

An eternity

I'm never going to warm to Drum'N'Bass. Highly repetetive and just lazy sounds. Probably great if your brain is fried on molly.

Didn't have a clue how to listen to it. Sounded like a soundtrack to wipeout on one ps1 Some of it was good though

YIKES, NO. Bad Muzak

I definitely don't love it, but I dont absolutely hate it. One listen is plenty though.

Fav- solar system 2/5

After reading that this album and LTJ Bukem were important as far as furthering the atmospheric drum and bass genre, I can understand why this has musical history significance. But once again, I'm here to say that historical significance does not immediately make something a must listen. The ethereal, atmospheric moments of this album were enjoyable enough. But each track tended to lose me once the drums and bass kicked in, which is half the point of the genre. So I'm guessing this ultimately just isn't for me.

As I have gotten farther into this list it has become apparent to me that electronic music is a real blind spot for me. I was never a raver and the popularity of EDM / Dub , etc came at a time when I was not listening to new music. That makes it hard for me to rate electronic music because I do not have a basis for what is good. There are genres of music that I do not particularly care for like "noise rock" and mostly singer songwriter that I have at least enough familiarity with (in some part due to this list) where I can at least in my opinion distinguish between Sonic Youth (mostly awesome) and Stephen Stills (not my favorite). With all of that being said, this album is mostly mediocre to me. That is mainly because of how repetitive it sounds to me which can be blamed on how incredibly long this albums is. I listened to both "discs" on YouTube and it took more or less 2 hours to get through. There are parts that I did enjoy and I can see how this would be an entirely different experience in a club and how this could make you want to dance, but outside of that setting or that frame of mind this was very tedious to get through.

Just sounded like average 90s trash

Boring, and to be honest, kind of lame.

One thing that I've learned from this project: although I really love drums and I really love bass, I can't stand the genre, drums n bass. Boring AF.

The reviewer who shared the YouTube link to the proper album is the GOAT. Ain't no way I was listening to that 3.5 hour version on Spotify! That said, 2 hours of this was still way too much. Not my thing in the slightest.

This is the definition of background music. I don't mean that critically; it's pleasant enough and nearly trancelike in its overall affect. It gives me the sense of being in a darkly lit, fancy sushi restaurants from the 90s or a first class airport lounge at Heathrow. As a focused listening experience, though, I find the songs both overly long and repetitive and, as a result, not interesting enough to keep my attention for long periods of time. So how do you rate really good background music? I put a ceiling on that at 2, because its not how I like to listen to music.

Well this certainly took me back to my youth. Not as a fan or the artist or genre, but getting infuriated at the endlessly monotonous, basic-ass loops coming out of my roommate's bedroom as he attempted to learn how to use FruityLoops Studio. Apologies, but my ears can't tell the difference.

Three and a half fucking hours of this? Is this even music? Technically, yes, I suppose. But it's also as creative and fun as a saltine cracker.

Ei lempparia

This could easily end up on my Spotify wrapped because it would have autoplayed in my “Aphex Twin Mix” that I have on in the background to work. This music does nothing for me really, I find some of the samples a bit cringe but it’s inoffensive (unless there are offensive bits in there, in which case it didn’t grab my attention above my locking in to data entry enough to notice). Nil pois! (2 stars)

So long. So repetitive. It’s not horrible it’s just background music for a mediocre club.

It's pretty good drum n bass, it's just never been my thing. And when you're listening to music that you don't love go on for over two hours, damn is that tough to get through. My listening experience was a 1, but taking away two whole ratings all for the length of the album feels very harsh, so it gets a generous 2.

This has got to be the least variant albums on the list. I imagine LTJ Bukem himself couldn't identify which song is which. It isn't bad per se, just tiresome.

This was a huge pain in the ass to find. Every streaming service just had weird mixes that weren’t the actual album (or compilation I suppose in this case). I finally found disc 2 on YouTube and once I started listening to it I knew that would be enough. I mean I guess it’s fine if you’re into this sort of thing. I’m really not.

Press X to doubt.

It’s long and it’s weird. Like a gummy worm.

Who needs to hear a drum and bass compilation before they die? What makes this good? I don’t get it, I don’t like it and there too much of it.

I enjoyed this while listening but am certain I will never revisit it

This is for someone, but that someone is not me.

This was far too long, and I didn’t play it all, but it was ok as background music,

So many minutes of easy listening noisy background music.

The problem with compilations when they are all the same style of music is you begin to hear its flaws or clichés. Animals sounds like birds or whales or monkeys. A British rapper with a dated flow but is surprisingly good. An annoying word usually spoken like a child looped throughout the song. Oh and She just wanted to let the world know that she's singing this song. 80 fucking times. All over the same repetitive sounding yet slightly different then the other songs. I'm giving this a 2 because those clichés are interesting not good. Oh and the spacey trippy stuff is kinda cool.

This is an album that I might have purchased on a trip to Europe in the late 90's thinking I loved this and it was something I didn't have access to at all at home in the States. And then I'd get home, and I'd realize I have a double album of something that reminds me of somewhere else, but that I don't really get a whole lot from listening to other than that.

not very interesting to me

Way too atmospheric for me.

I enjoyed the second disc more than the first, but overall this is just not for me.

4/10 I see "Intelligent DnB" dotted over LTJ's recordings and references. Thing is, if you have to tell people something is intelligent to discern from everything else in the genre then it is pretty damning. It is dull, repetitive, boring, uninspiring and soulless. It sits in the background, mainly minding it's own business. Barely music

Interesting background drum and bass style. Not something I would revisit but its not unpleasant to listen and has some nice vibes. 2.5

För långgggg

Long synthesized nonsense

Not bad,

Drum and Bass music that is massively elevated by staring the album cover while listening. I don't really know how to rate electronic music since it really isn't my taste, but I think this is a good one? Still, the album is much too long. 2.5/5

So... This album should be listened to in it's continuous mix version. I would've loved to listen to this as a live set, around 4-5 in the morning, high on ecstasy. However, as an album for listening at home, this gets boring very fast. The changesare so subtle between tracks, that it sounds like an hour of the same drum 'n' bass track. 2/5

For some people, there's a time and a place for drum and bass, but, alas, a Friday morning before I've had my coffee ain't it for me. I can appreciate the craft, but I was just waiting for it to end

This is not my cup of tea. It felt like I was listening to the same song on repeat. Some parts definitely went on for too long. There were some jazzier parts that were fun Liked Songs: "Solar System" , "Night Train" , "Universal Music" , "Jazz Lick" , "Reflections"

No standouts

Worse than their reputation.

Not necessarily bad music, but the length itself is enough to make me dislike it.

The only reason this isn't 1 star is because I like drums

There’s a time and a place. This wasn’t the time or place.

It’s all background music, it just transitions between up-tempo work lo-fi to the “I know kung fu” scene in the Matrix, to video game grotto adventure. It’s fine.

Too long, didn't listen much.

Might be ok for a party, but not in the car on the wayto work

I really have no critical frame of reference for this sort of music. I guess it's fine, inoffensive? The maker obviously had access to a computer and owns a pair of ears.

Good study music and, if it was on Amazon Music, would certainly replace some of the albums I currently have on rotation when I need to do focussed work. Other than that though I'm not really putting this on, nothing stand out for me, I much prefer a bit of Roni Size, DJ Hype or Micky Finn...

I've not listened to much of this music but I quite enjoyed the first CD. It was good background to work to. The 2nd CD was a but more of a struggle

Enjoyable in the background, it’s no Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada but I’d probably put it on again

I liked listening to this, i was working and it played on the background and i felt in the zone for most of the time. Nice recommendation

Day 105 Not for me at all

Honestly really long background music

Drum and bass, a little monotonous, hyper speed breakbeats Demon's theme

It’s good as a background music for work. That being said, it feels like I got an hour long rain sound or lofi beats to study to - not something I expected from an album on this list. Very forgettable

This album reminded me of a ride i really liked called Whirlpool that used to be at Knott’s Berry Farm. I really liked it. But not for 3 hours

My least favorite thing about the genre Drum and Bass is all of the bass and drums that they have in the songs. Everything else about it when it comes to the electronic features I can get down with. But just the constant beat of drums is exhausting to listen to. Not quite a 1 because it did have parts that were cool but the lowest of 2s. One of the most relieved I have been to finish an album on this whole list

So the album this takes you to is not the same as the one on Wikipedia. Not really quite sure what to believe, but I'm listening on Youtube as that one is only 2 hours and 17 minutes (as opposed to 3 hours and 27 minutes). Alright this is cutting in and out. It's ok cuz I think I get it. If it wasn't over 2 hours I would probably stick it out.

My brother loves this. I don't really like it. D 'n B is an acquired taste. You have to know what to listen for to appreciate it. It's not about melody and lyrics at all, like most music in the book. It's made primarily for dancing. It has lots of subtleties in the rhythm. Like on the first track the accent shifts all the time. But most of the tracks are just repetitive, monotonous, and progressing too slowly for listening. And way too long. So I can't give it a very high rating. Favorite song: music

While not my vibe, this was a pleasant surprise. I didn’t hate it. Good zoning out and working music.

Dad- NA Mom- 4 Mike- NA Lori- 4 Michael- 4 Miles- 4 Cole- NA Avg- 4

1-star for the album bumped to 2-stars because it's so dull it cured my insomnia

Pretty dull

Nothing bad but mostly just background noise and not really worth the two hour+ length

Ei paskaa muttei iskenytkään. 1,75/5.

I like 8-bit chip tune, so had some hopes when this started. Those who compared it to Mario Kart music are spot on. Not terrible, but as an album too long and repetitive. I can see this being for someone, but not worth being on this list. 2⭐️

I will be hearing drum and bass in my sleep for years to come. I did not necessarily dislike the album, but literally nothing about it sticks out. I do not like this genre of music. This is a compilation album, so not even one artist's work. I don't want to give this a 1, because it's not bad. It's just not an album I would ever listen to again, not even a single song probably.

The only reason this is a ⭐️⭐️ and not a ⭐️ is because my 5.5 year old said she liked one of the songs that had the quiet high pitched “beep boops.” She used different words, but liked the part nonetheless. The album also reminded me of the “Cool Borders” soundtrack: “Lean air!”

Some people like jerking off more than having sex

it’s 1998 and I fell asleep w the main menu of 1080 snowboarding on a loop

Just not into this kind of stuff. Also....3 hours??? oof.

Great background music when completing a mundane task. Nothing really grabbed my attention

Kinda felt like listening to the same song for nearly two hours.

Boring, repetitive. I was so grateful for any track (e.g., “Bringing Me Down”) that had vocals or a little life.

It's not bad but a two disc compilation of D&B is just too much. 2/5.

That was tedious.

Not THAT bad but it’s just hours of the exact same thing. I’ve listened, I’ve moved on.

Don’t enjoy just instrumental

synthesizer drums . was ooit modern

It’s not like I have a problem with this, it’s nice background music, but… what’s the point? Do people dance to this?

Felt a lot more listenable than Roni Size, my only real reference to this type of music. No desire to really spin this again, but it wasn't bad.

Some albums I’d love to read what they say about in the book, I’ll likely end up getting a copy to do this. What would they say to this over hour same song?

Maybe I'm just old, but I don't get it. I'm not a big fan of drum and bass personally. It's sooo repetitive.

Não é desagradável, mas é inócuo. Música para "preencher" o ambiente de cafés, aeroportos e restaurantes. Não faz sentido constar deste livro.

Not my jam.

not the style of music I gravitate towards but it’s good!

Decent but kind of boring, not much happening

Just fine as background or club music, but hlad there was some sort of platlist that seemed representative of the original recording instead of the almost 4 hour 'album' on Spotify

Well that's an hour of my life I'll never get back. 2 stars because there was an occasional 45 second section I didn't hate

Not for me. Went on and on, every track the same. My son loved it, though. DNF.

I do remember when Jungle was the Big Thing, for a hot minute, with LTJ Bukem being the King of the Hill Listening again now, I’m wondering what all the fuss was about

Too repetitve for me, even as someone who likes house music/techno

Links // Music // Western // After Hours //

It was really good to work to. It was quite long even by electronic album standards. Good cover art, feels like you can guess the type of music just by looking at it. Don't really have a problem with it being a compilation album to help sum up a movement. But if this is allowed how is No New York not on here to sum up the no wave movement? Rating: 2.4

This felt like a homework assignment. I got through it and that’s the best I can say about it. Rather monotonous and overly long.

So know I know what genre drum & bass is - and that I can skip it anytime I come across that genre in the future! I just found it to be boring and ultimately forgettable. Hard pass.

Way too fucking long and all the songs sound the same.

Any one of these songs individually is fine, but they are too samey to grab your attention, especially over the course of two hours plus.

That's not my taste in music - boring

3 hours 30mins - I like the idea of space. But track 2 being 1 hour long was an insult. Nice vibe if I wanted some space age and techno house music. Not so much for my commute and walk into the office…

It sounds like the music they put here local news on the radio before the show actually starts.

Not great

This is just ok, another album that I really have to ask why?

This is just a fine (at best) album that's hurt by it's length. With editing, might get to be a 3, but I never really need to hear this again.

Sooo, I understand the Spotify link isn’t the actual album. However, that’s what I went with. Over 3 hours of samey drum and bass, ffs. I’ll not be listening to it again, as I usually do. It’s more suited to a DJ set or a club night. Not something to sit listening to on the bus

2+ hours of drum and bass? I mean sure in the right setting with the right drugs maybe but top 1001 album ever? Fuck right off. I’m rating based on LTJ being original and a trendsetter and defining a genre but I’m not listening to this whole thing wtf

i didn't hate it, but it's not my kinda music

I listened to most of this album but didn’t get to finish it. Fortunately, I don’t think I missed much because personally this album wasn’t for me. Unfortunately, it just fell flat and was very repetitive to me. Kinda just sounded like space age lofi music for most of it. I don’t see myself listening to this again in the future.

I think I listened to this wrong. I think I was just supposed to listen to the one hour song entitled “Logical Progression” which is a mashup of the proceeding songs. Even if it were only an hour, that’s still more D&B than I want.

Decent techno album. Not my favorite music but is listenable.

Don’t think this is the right album? But if it is. It’s a no for me.

It's not my music at all but it was okay as background music.

Loading screen music

Still working through it, far too long. Music is ok, just don't see a situation where I'd sit down and listen to this by choice

90s electronica. Drum-and-bass compilation. Repetitive lounge music.

I do enjoy some drum and bass, and I was good with this album being on for the first hour, but another hour of it proved to be too much for me. Even just as background music I don’t think there are any circumstances where I’d want to hear this for over two hours. I don’t think any of it is bad, just exhausting as an album experience.

It's chill background music. Liked it but it gets way to repetitive for continuous listening

Had a lot of trouble caring about this one.

As a drummer, appreciate the complexity of the rhythms, but for just listening to music, not my thing.

Why make this so difficult to listen to the full album? It's not correct on Spotify, tracks are missing on the YouTube version. I think it's weird the Spotify version has an track that's just the album as one long track. If you didn't like the album the first play-through, why would you want to listen to is as one hour-long track? But the album itself: again, I just find this stuff tedious. Mainly because there's no variation. And... two HOURS of it? Nope. NEXT.

Yesterday I had the excellent Revolver by The Beatles so this is not a logical progression. 2/5 28/7/25

Sounds like the background of a 90s-2000s video game.

Maybe I listened to the right album? Either way, I put in my three hours and I’m counting it as completed. I can see how this would be a perfect album to have playing in the background while playing old video games, unfortunately when I listened to it I wasn’t doing that. I also don’t think it would improve the rating. I’m only going with a two because we’ve listened to some truly wild shit on this list so far.

Is the goal of this album to have other artists sample it and then just collect royalties off of those samples? Create a 15 second loop. Repeat it for 8 minutes. Add a quiet part 2/3rds of the way in. Now repeat that 7 times. You now have an album. At least the 15 second loops were good.

I don’t think I listened to exactly the correct album on Apple Music, but I know at least some of the tracks were correct and regardless, there’s not a lot of variation here. I don’t mind this sort of thing as background music but it’s pretty dull actively listening to it. Meh.

I'm curious under what circumstances they expect someone to thoroughly enjoy 2+ hours are rather similar sounding DnB songs... 4/10

just background music. unnecessary.

The father of “lowfi beats to study to”. Regardless of the effort it took to make this album, it was nothing to me. Nothing at all.

Noperino. 1.5/5

Album #840 and to my knowledge it's the first one I did not listen to in its entirety. The version on Apple Music had the same album cover, but totally different tracks than what Wikipedia says. YouTube had bits and pieces, but copyrights prevented me from finding all the songs. Just a major pain in the ass to cobble together the original album, not to mention the different versions and mixes there were out there. Anyway, I listened to about 90 minutes of something resembling this album and I wasn't impressed at all. Most of the tracks were obnoxiously long and repetitive. How many times can you do the Funky Drummer drum break as your entire song?! If they were going to cheat and put a compilation album with different artists on here, you'd think it would be better than this. Let me make a suggestion on what to replace it with. How about "Weird Al" Yankovic in 3-D?

Repetitive

Once again, we have a 2+ hour long album that I listened to ahead of time for my Mega Album Mini Project. Here's my review from September 2024: Why are drum and bass albums so unbelievably long? Seriously! Between this and a few others on the list, I’m pretty sure every drum and bass album is nearly or over two hours long each. That’s insane. Anyways, this album’s okay, I guess. It’s not very interesting to me. It literally isn’t even a cohesive album experience. It’s literally a compilation album. There’s value in compilation albums, sure. I just don’t think they should really be on a list like this because it kind of feels like cheating. The sound of Logical Progression is fine. It works well enough as background music. If you have a 2 hour long task to do and you really like electronic music, this could be for you. It’s not for me though. I don’t really care much about this one. Despite many songs being made by different people, this album felt kind of repetitive. Nothing really stuck out in my mind as being particularly good. Also, this album literally isn’t even on streaming. There’s an album called “Logical Progression” by LTJ Bukem on Spotify and Apple Music, but it’s not the original version of the album. It’s completely different and is much shorter. Quite frankly, I wish I had listened to that instead. Maybe I would feel better about listening to an hour of this kind of music than two hours. As it stands though, I just don’t really think this should be on the list. It’s fine for what it is, but I just feel like there’s better inclusions, even in regards to the drum and bass genre. According to the website, there’s three drum and bass albums on the list: This one, New Forms by Roni Size and Reprazent, and Timeless by Goldie. Timeless was the earliest of the three and can be considered the most essential in forming the foundations of the genre, and New Forms, which I have listened to in my goal to listen to the longest albums on the list ahead of time, felt more original to me and seems to be more of a fan-favorite. I’m not upset I listened to this, but I do question this album’s inclusion. Still, it’s certainly not the worst thing I’ve heard. High 2/5.

Of the hundreds of albums I've listened to so far from this list, this was, without a doubt, one of the longest.

Another nope for me - just not my genre in any way, shape, or form. Okay background music, but their are much better backgrounds

Can't review this objectively, it's just background music to me. Very ho-hum, boring background music. Is this better than other electronic drum-bass music? No idea. Don't care

I actually do enjoy this kind of stuff, as an ambient soundscape in the background while working. But definitely feel like I dont know or care enough about the genre to know what makes this special or essential listening. Also the apple music version is 3.5 hours, which is just insanity if you're not listening passively

Kinda makes me nostalgic for wipeout.

Interesting, but not that interesting.

#634. This is probably good as background music while studying or some thing. 2/5: fine
