Was it probably way longer than necessary? Yeah. Was it repetitive at times? Also yeah. That being said, it has a mid 2000's internet vibe and it was really good to put on in the background to get into a flow. Cleaned a bunch of my apartment and hardly even noticed the time. I enjoyed it but also I am not listening to the last 40 minutes because it's giving me a headache.
Drum and bass is drum and bass. This is definitely top drawer in the genre, but it feels very flat without vocals. The last track is a with-vocals mix of the whole album, which I enjoyed a lot more. That alone would probably be 3 stars, but this one is definitely 2.
Great work music! A little repetitive sure but not the worst thing in the world

A "drum and base" album. Never heard of "Logical Progression" or LTJ Bukem before and it is not on Spotify or Youtube. A true obscurity.
I am not now, nor have I ever been high enough to enjoy this album.
A compilation album? Isn't that kind of cheating? But then, if there are so many artists, how does each track sound so similar?
It's always going to be tough for me to rank drum and bass albums on this list, but this one was long, and didn't feel in any way spectacular or ground breaking. There was one section with a rap artist that stood out, but once again I am left wanting more from this genre.
So let me get this straight, Mr. Dimery . Compilations are authorized in your list, or are they NOT? If it's the first, then discard that one and place Buzzcocks' *Singles Going Steady* instead. And if it's the second, then just discard that one. The tracks by LTJ Bukem are nice drum'n'bass cuts with quite subtle and lush flourishes. And they aged pretty well considering how that particular electronic genre sounds dated overall in 2023. But minus a couple of exceptions here and there, the tracks produced by all the other artists are just a footnote written in tiny-ass letters in the book of electronic music. And once again, this double record is a compilation, not a proper album. I shouldn't even have to grade this thing. So next, please. 3/10. In addition to being over 2 hours of the same shit, this is a compilation album. Not only are compilation albums not supposed to be on this list, because this one has been around for over a quarter of a century, there's been plenty of time for the copyright to get all fucked and make it impossible to find all of the songs on one platform. And like, the actual music is fine, it's drum and bass, not really my thing, but kinda cool if I don't have to listen to it for hours on end. And is it just me, or do a ton of these songs have the same basic drum beat? Is that the point? Ah well, at least I know that there can't be any drum and bass left on the list because it took me until after the final album on the list generated to track down all of the tracks for this.
I’m not even convinced this is multiple different songs, much less a compilation of multiple artists. It all sounds exactly the same, and it never ends…

More of a compilation album than an LTJ Bukem album
There are two things this reminds me of. First, the initial flowering of internet radio stations in the UK in the late 2000s. Ninety percent of them sounded like Logical Progression, occasionally punctuated by some callow Home Counties youth mumbling some knackers about proper tunes. The other thing Logical Progression sounds like - every damn track of it - is the menu music of a PS2 game with a name like Cyb3rBitch or somesuch. Either way, this isn't a great listening experience.
For being on the computer and taking care of some light work, this album was okay to have on as background noise. That really is meant as an endorsement of this album, however. I can't really figure out why I really like Moby "Play", but I see this is a meandering mess; but I do. Maybe it's this album's lack of structure or anything cohesive in the tracks: who really knows? Choosing a drum beat, a bass line, and throwing in some vocal/sound effect samples, and then repeating it all for 6-8 minutes isn't really a good formula for anything. If I were the type to drop acid or do Molly, then this album would be amazing. But I'm not, and it isn't.
I really don’t have anything negative to say about this album, it just was complete background noise. I was doing busy work while listening and I didn’t even realize I had finished the album which was 3 hours. I mean it wasn’t bad, there’s just literally nothing to say about it.

In all seriousness - I can put this on at literally any point for a ~10-15 minute period and hear the same thing. I suppose that's almost the point, which ... this works really great for studying or working. I'm working now in fact. Just make it 40 minutes. Tops. There's no need for anything longer - I can set it on repeat and get the same effect. I have no idea what to "rate" this album - it doesn't work like anything else. If I want to listen to music....I don't really want to listen to this at all. If I want background ambience and to not be distracted by intricate melodies or structure, this is kind of perfect. I should probably give it a 3 since I could see myself playing it in the right conditions...on the other hand I just can't give it middle of the road because I don't know if I can distinguish this from any random youtube highlight video of 3 hours of e.g. Space Station footage or some of my weekend Ableton experimentation. 5/10 2 stars
Repetitive meaningless nothingness
Ok, first of all I am morally opposed to the idea of a compilation album being on this list. Second of all, this album was basically impossible to track down. There’s a “Logical Progression” album available on Spotify that does not contain any of the tracks listed on Wikipedia. It’s mostly available on Youtube but still missing some tracks, though you can find the missing tracks individually. So it was a high maintenance album to listen to in order. Oh, it’s also TWO AND A HALF HOURS LONG. So, was it worth it? No. Was it at all good? Kinda. The tracks were all decent as far as the genre goes, though I wouldn’t listen to it again. They all sounded the same to me. If it was significantly shorter and not a compilation album I may have given it a 3, but…. it IS two and a half hours long, and it IS a compilation album. Which is cheating.

The album under this name on Apple Music is an entirely different tracklist, so I went and made a playlist of everything I could find from the original compilation. I figure I'd better at least give it a fair shot. While it is probably significant for its time... I think AI could legitimately produce hours and hours of DnB under the name of an established DJ and no one would know the difference.

It's inoffensive enough that I will give it two stars. Maybe someday I will listen to it as ambient music when working. Otherwise I don't see much replay value in this album. Can only rate based on what I was able to find online - Demon’s Theme was pretty darn good but a lot of the other tracks just blended into each other and got quite samey, nowhere near as exciting as the opener

Not sure what was linked was the actual album but if the guy wants to make it hard to listen to his stuff so be it.
The book mentions that this music sounded fresh at the time, and became "the preferred soundtrack in hip cafes, hair salons, and fashion stores." This perhaps is insight into why it sounds so weak to me. My first exposure to this may have been at the mall, being reluctantly dragged along running errands with mom when I was 8 or 9. I dont know if that's the case, but the album made me feel underwhelmed and I was glad when it was over.
Basically sounds like if Missy Elliott worked behind the bar at The Rover's Return.

A pointless, tedious, stupid album masquerading as art, cerebral depth & creative musical composition.
On some level you have to hand it to drum-and-bass artists, it's kind of admirable that they've managed to build a whole scene with only one beat between them.
all skips, i even tried throwing it in a playlist with some other stuff to see if it'd work better being thrown in the mix instead of trying to white-knuckle the full 200 hours, but to no avail
Fuck this album. I was about an hour in and pretty much hating it, THEN I discover that it’s not even the correct one!! (on Apple Music) anyway, the one that I listened to bored the shit out of me - all the songs are forever long, there is absolutely NOTHING going on during most of them, and I was pretty much bored shitless after the first song-and-a-half. DnB should be renamed S&M as you’d have to be a masochist to subject yourself to 1 hour, let alone 3 or more

The album this is linked to on Spotify (which others have said may not be right?) is THREE AND A HALF HOURS LONG. Which is a really long time to listen to the same beat. I'm tapping out after an hour, as I'm relatively sure that there won't be any changes anytime soon and I'm starting to get a headache from it.

I thought the music was OK - I really liked some songs. I’m not sure I’d regularly listen to this, but it was OK. But there is no way a 3.5 hour compilation album should be on this list. This needs to be replaced in a future version of the book, and I’d take it off this for now

- this joins the list of other repetitive synth- and drum machine-heavy dance choices that I have to imagine are more of a reflection of the personal musical preference of the book's author and less an actual true "hear before you die" album - this is extremely similar to other albums I've already encountered within the first 100 albums of this project: William Orbit's Strange Cargo III, Suba's Sao Paulo Confessions. how many more atmospheric soundscapes do you need to represent this genre of music? if you skip through any song 20-30 seconds at a time, there is so little variation between what’s going on during the first minute vs. the seventh minute that it’s almost impossible to tell that you’ve skipped ahead at all - when I think of what might make an album that I believe someone absolutely must hear before they die, I can think of a couple of different criteria one might consider when making their choices: * an iconic album with songs deeply embedded and referenced in pop culture (Queen's A Night at the Opera with "Bohemian Rhapsody," Led Zeppelin IV with "Stairway to Heaven") * an album that’s personal to the artist that encompasses some dimension of the human experience (Jeff Buckley’s Grace) * an album that pioneered a movement or transformed a genre (Jimi Hendrix's Are You Experienced, The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper) * an album that is completely unique that sounds nothing like anyone has created before, expanding what can be considered “music” (Portishead's Third) * an album that captures a little-known cultural tradition (Ladysmith Black Mambazo) * an album that pioneered a now-standard technique or method of making music (Jean-Michel Jarre’s Oxygene) but I just can’t understand how this album fits any of that criteria. it is completely indistinguishable from the other works in this genre from any time period, in my opinion - I give this a 1 as a way of just asking “...why?” to the book’s author (p.s., I thought compilation albums were excluded in the actual list — so why is this here)

No es lo mejor del 96, ni siquiera en este estilo, ni en otros parecidos (DJ Shadow o Tortoise sacaron más brillo), así que un doble no me parece la mejor opción.

Just go out in the park, walk along a road, listen to some random sounds ... all of these are musically seen as interesting as listening to this album.

Tycker dessutom det är konstigt att ett samlingsalbum med diverse artister är med på denna listan. Blir en 1a för att det är så tråkigt och jag aldrig kommer lyssna på detta igen. I knew going into this album it was a long one. My expectations were pretty low, so at least I wasn't disappointed with the repetitive electronic noises, samples, and vocalizations. The only positive I can say or this album is that its space sound was ethereal. Anyway, this was some hot garbage. Why was a compilation album like this here?

Just awful. Every track sounds the same and goes on way too long. This might work on the dancefloor or as background music in some kind of party or lounge context. As an album it just doesn't capture interest or provides any kind of development.

The only way I could see myself ever listening to any of this again is if it was in the soundtrack to some dream cast racing game. Idk its on hydrothunder or some shit. This whole playlist was just a bunch of sounds and all of them were super long, especially the last two THAT WERE MORE THAN HOUR LONG, EACH... what a scam. Anyway, nothing that exciting at all, since I assume this was probably aimed at maybe movie background music situations, where you take a 7-minute song and you split it up in different bits. This seems like something you would have playing in the background of a sped-up video of someone doing something, and it looking very funny. Overall, very meh, not excited about this experience at all.

AND THEN TO KICK ME IN MY BALLS AFTER KICKING ME IN THE FACE, THIS ALBUM ON SPOTIFY ISNT EVEN THE ORIGINAL ALBUM! Unfair to the artist but this whole fiasco brings down the album rating pretty horrifically.

So yes, I listened to the whole thing. I had to find an Archive.org download because the Spotify version is all over the place. It might not even be the same album on there. Still, I went ahead and made myself sit through two hours of this. The concept of drum and bass sounds interesting when taken in small doses, but two hours? He'll nah (as my buddy would mistakenly say). Like why? Why should an album that is too long? too niche? too hard to find? be on the list of the 1001 albums you MUST hear? Do I have to familiarize myself with this type of stuff in order to understand popular music? Cause all it is is variations of the same joke repeated 20 times over and over again. These damn long fucking 90s British electronic albums. It's a miracle that some of them are actually good. This is not even bad, it's just pointless. Who wants that? Honestly if you think THIS deserves a place on the list, you're a nerd. "Oh, but cool fast-paced rave racing music!!", who gives a shit? Touch some grass (3/10, 1/5 on this scale)

There is no point to this album existing, it fulfils nothing but to go on, and on, and on, and on. Just a whole bunch of self indulgent repetitive beats that should probably be background music somewhere you'd like people to suffer.

i don't know if this is the worst album on the list, but it's probably pretty close to my worst experience. you'll spend a good chunk of time just tracking it down, and once you do, no sources can agree on the titles of the songs, the names of the artists, which is muddied even further by subsequent versions of the compilation over the years. and once you've finally less-than-legally acquired it, and settled for something resembling accurate track information, your reward is over 2 hours of the most monotonous, torturous electronic music that would be more at home at a CIA blacksite. and to cap it all off, as if there wasn't enough representation for this god awful kind of music on the list, this is, as previously mentioned, a fucking COMPILATION! it shouldn't even be eligible! this was a horrible waste of time in multiple dimensions, it makes me want to let a semi crush my head like a grape, and if i see LTJ Bukem on the street, i think i should be allowed to shoot him
Yeah so apparently the Spotify version of this album is a completely different record from like 2013 or something? It's frustrating having to track down a record you know you are probably not going to like. Mid 90s electronica was really something. 2+ hours of 90s electronica is categorized as torture in the Geneva Convention I think. It's so repetitive and every song is exactly the same. Remember when we called this Techno? I don't know why that was changed. Either way I hate this. And honestly I don't think listening to the Spotify version would have been any different. Still 2+ hours of nonsense. 1/5

The whole idea of this 1001 Album Project was that i was eventually going to find an album that was completely out of my comfort zone in some way. As a mainly Rock fan, i've dabbled in stuff that was a little bit out of my comfort zone. I can confidently say, this was an absolute nose dive out of my comfort zone.... Almost akin to a fat kid eating a grilled chicken Caesar salad. And im not going to lie, i didnt have any interest in this at all. 1/5
Boy, if you love ambient music with a dated, frantic drum beat sample underneath, then this is the album for you! Not only is that all you’ll hear, as every song is exactly just that, but you’ll get hours worth of it! I mean, if you listen to 3 minutes of it then you’ve heard all this album has to offer, but why not stick around for the length of a long movie to make sure you haven’t been driven insane? This is monotonous and irritating. I think they took the ambient music off of The Weather Channel from the 90’s. I regret I wasn’t deaf when listening to this garbage.

Oh boy, gotta really settle in for this one. Staring down the barrel of 2+ hours of drum and bass is not exactly what I had in mind for my day, but we press on. I'll say that I don't think compilation albums or greatest hits collections should be on this list. Sure, all these songs may be influential in their genre, but this is like cheating. If an artists own album can't hold up, that's on them. So that's one strike against this. The album itself? It's fine. It didn't change my life. One or two of these songs by themselves would be fun to listen to, but for two hours while I'm just sitting listening is not a great time. It's so repetitive even between songs. You really gotta be in the mood for this. This didn't do it for me. 1 star for being a compilation, and an uninspiring slog with the exception of maybe 2 tracks. But even then I didn't enjoy really a single minute of this listen, so I'm glad it's over.

Unable to listen - not in streaming services
First thing to note is that the 3 hours and 27 minutes available on Spotify is not the right version. 3 hours and 27 minutes!! To clarify that is 207 minutes of the wrong version of this album. The good news is the correct version is on YouTube with CD1 being a mere 57:16 long and CD 2 registering as barely even a blip at 45:50 which comes in at a super quick 103 minutes. If you are unfortunate enough to not realise the incorrect version is on Spotify and just happen to look at the reviews and spot one that highlights that, it means that you have spent 310 minutes or, to be clearer, 5 hours and 10 minutes listening to LTJ Bukem and that is without considering YouTube adverts. Is the album any good? Album 885 of 1089 LTJ Bukem - Logical Progression (1987) Rating : 1.5 / 5 More electronica, which is a genre I just don’t have much interest in. As far as electronica goes, it struck me as pretty middle of the road. A bit dreamy in parts, but overall it didn’t move me or leave much of an impression. Not terrible, just not for me.

27/08/2025 So many unnecessary bleeps and bloops, stuck on a loop for 3 hours worth of an album. Give me 5 minutes in front of a computer I would be able to replicate this.
Nobody needs to hear this before they die!! Awful album! Even sought out the proper one on YouTube but still couldn't listen to it. First one since starting this journey that I have given up on. The only logical progression here might be toward skipping tracks faster than you can say “jungle renaissance.” A curious relic of its time that somehow managed to be both nostalgic and exhausting.

Didn't even make it through disc one. Felt like the same drum and/or bass line (or synth beat) over and over. I thought it might be good background music while I tried to read and concentrate. But even then, I kept looking at the clock waiting for disc one to end. And because I couldn't wait for it to end, it gets the lowest rating possible despite not being complete trash.
What an incredibly boring compilation. There were a few bright spots, but since it was only available on two YouTube videos with missing tracks, I can't even say what tracks had the bright spots (the one with the rap, is the best I can do). There is absolutely no reason I needed to hear this before I died, and it was one of the few albums that made me regret my commitment to listening to every album twice. Way too long, way too repetitive, way too unnecessary. I feel like I should give it a 2 because it isn't the worst background music, but my irritation at the length and its lack of availability on streaming services makes me call it a 1.

Godawful, like nails on a chalkboard. It wasn’t on Amazon, it wasn’t on Spotify, and I could only find some copyright-shortened version of it on YouTube. In hindsight, the fact that I only had to listen to an hour of this was a blessing.
Was fine background music while working, I wasn’t able to finish it though because it was very long and not incredibly interesting. It wasn’t necessarily bad but not great. It kind of reminded me of DJ Shadows “Entroducing…” a bit but not as good. I think this gets a 1/5 unfortunately.

this and 69 love songs back to back is a bit cruel ..... need a lie down to process the volume of new sound i've listened to in the last 24 hours. i had higher hopes coming into this, i'd enjoyed chemical brothers and i was some of that consistent electronic sound that i liked might follow over to here. but no, that really didnt happen .. i went out of my way to find the youtube links to the right recordings. what a waste of time. i hated this. way too intense and repetitive with nothing of note to remember. i couldn't engage with the "music", it's about as melodic as someone jiggling their keys infront of me for two hours.
Hope you like that stereotypical, fast paced techno breakbeat, because every song on this record has it. Sometimes it’s right at the top of the track, other times it comes in after a minute or two. Dread it, run from it…the stereotypical techno breakbeat arrives all the same. It’s kind of amazing, actually. Some of these songs are pretty good, some are not, some go on for way too long, but somehow, they all sound the same. I don’t understand how that is possible.

I think I found the correct album, and it was over 2 fucking hours. There are some good albums that are super long, but this is not one of them. I'm sure it was influential and blah blah but this is the type of electronica that just drives me nuts. Maybe if I were in a club I'd be into it, but on its own, most of it is too long and too same-y. After awhile this just felt tedious. There is some really good electronica on this list, to be fair, but there is a lot of it, and this doesn't need to have a spot.

Eh, I don't even hate this. PFM and LTJ Bukem himself had some cool contributions. But amongst the various gripes I have about this being included (too long; too repetitive; *much* too long) the biggest is that it's a compilation. Why not include Now That's What I Call Music 42 while we're at it? Picking tracks from multiple artists ought to be a huge unfair advantage. It's just that in this case, that advantage is wasted... 1.5

I don't think that this is the kind of album that I can enjoy properly whilst sitting at my desk working. I've had some fun nights out at drum n bass events, but you really need the whole surrounding to enjoy it. That said, even considering that, I don't think this album ticks the boxes for me. I assume it was important for the genre, but it didn't work for me.
Album number 436 and this is the first and hopefully last time that I say this, but I am not listening to this shit. For two reasons: 1. I'm busy today and don't have the time to listen to an album of such an ungodly length 2. It's a compilation so it was probably gonna get a 1 anyway

I've rated 180 albums so far and I really think this is probably in 180th place. it seems like the list generally avoids compilation albums and I don't understand why this got an exception to that rule; it's totally undeserving

This is a genre I don't care for, is not on any streaming services, and is overly long, so it already had 3 strikes going against it before I even listened to it. You can find it on YouTube, though I guess it's not complete as some tracks are missing because of copyright issues as far as I understand, but it was still close to 100 minutes and I think I got the gist and the missing tracks probably don't matter. This has no business being on this list.

If you would have played this album for me when I was ten years old and told me that this is what music would be like in the future I would have believed you. And you know what, you would have been right. However, as a citizen of the future, I can confidently say that we don't listen to this when we're cooking, or working out, or having futuristic sex orgys. We listen to this in the background of our video game load/ menu screens.

I got 30mins in before I couldn't take it anymore. It's too repetitive, not interesting enough and too chill for me. Most good music communicates an emotion or a feeling or a story, but I'm getting absolutely nothing from this.
