Reviews (page 3 of 7)
Brian Eno is just that guy. Some other review said the vocals remind them of John Grant and yeah I see it. Great soundscapes and atmosphere with some vocal tracks mixed in. Phil Collins is here too? Fantastic album cover as well. Favorites were St Elmo’s Fire, The Big Ship, I’ll Come Running, and Golden Hours.
Really enjoyed this, possibly the most accessible of his solo work I have listened to to date. Will circle back.
The Big Ship is an easy 5, the rest is 4 for me me
pretty fucking amazing for me and feels like something that could get up to a 5 as i listen to it more Fav song: The Big Ship
Altijd weer kippenvel. Unieke luisterervaring, en vér voor zijn tijd. Een bevestiging dat Eno één van mijn muziekhelden is. 8,5/10 Highlights: The Big Ship Golden Hours I'll Come Running Becalmed
Best vreemd zo'n combinatie tussen ambient en rock-songs. Maar door de op- en afbouw van ambient naar de rocknummers in het midden van het album klopt het eigenlijk best goed. Ik vind I'll Come Running echt een 5-sterren track. Goeie shit. Eno, wat een master... 8/10 Highlights I'll Come Running
Nice mix of rock songs and soft ambient ones.
Another Brian Eno album that I've largely got along with. I like this. It's weird and moody, with a good variety of tracks. I like the layers of sounds building up over time, creating real textures and mood.
Он из будущего. Лучшая песня - Everything Merges With the Night.
Added to my (virtual) collection. An almost ambient album that benefits from repeat listens.
Way more accessible then some of his previous albums. Rather enjoyed and might have to add this to
Ooh, very interesting and contemporary-sounding sonic experiments for 1975. I much prefer the all-instrumental tracks vs. the few with lyrics, which are both weak and sung weakly. But the tracks where musicians explore the edges of sounds, keeping a beat throughout, really pleased my ears. I know Brian Eno as a superstar producer and not his own music. While I fear that may have been him singing, I’m into what he’s doing here.
Very good, considering its instrumental it holds up well. The tracks have great depth. Great album
More good stuff from the man Eno. It doesn't have the same impact as Before and After Science, but it's kind of in the same vein - I suppose being right on the cusp of the more straightforward Roxys influenced rock and his foray into ambient. The instrumental track on here don't quite have the ethereal beauty he finds later on, but they are still interesting and do something to you deep inside.
sooo listened while doing schoolwork so wasn’t paying 100% attention but i DEF wanna relisten and loved the vibes and felt like pink floyd!!
I liked it. I didn't really know what to expect. Always thought Eno was new wavey stuff, not for me. But this surprised me. Many good thing on here. A few misses - but well worth the listen.
I think it's exceptional. I'm curious about what the community score will be though. Because this project fucking LOVES 70s music, but very much hates electronic/ambient music. For me, though, this is a banger.
Dang, there seems to be a bunch of Brian Eno on this list. This must be my 4th or 5th album of his. I thoroughly enjoyed this album. It was a fun ride.
Listened in the truck via YouTube music. Brian Eno’s been all over the place with sound and textures. Another great one.
This was a fun listen. Easy listening for a chilled eve, but interesting and took you on a journey throughout. I didn't recognise any of the tracks, and none stood out to me, but great as a piece.
Wow, I didn’t expect this album to be this good. When I first got this album, all I know of Brian Eno was that he worked with the Talking Heads at some point, and that’s it, so I had no idea what this album was going to be like. So I went out to my back porch and started listening to the album, and it was ok, but not great. I liked Robert Fripp’s guitar solo on St. Elmo’s Fire, and some of the songs were actually pretty good, but I wasn’t into it yet. But everything changed when I got to Becalmed. Listening to the soft, spacey piano, while watching the sun go down made me understand everything that I’d headed beforehand. You have to be in the mood to listen to the album. If you’re too actively listening(like I was) you’re not gonna enjoy it, but if you turn your brain off and take in your surroundings, it can be a great experience. Eno’s production on this album is amazing. He knows how to create an atmosphere by layering sounds. He also has a group of great session musicians on this album, he even gets Phil Collin’s to drum on a few tracks. Songs like In Dark Trees, Another Green World, and Spirits Drifting create a great ambience, and allow you to get lost in the music. So, I say, get this album, go outside at sunset, and prepare to have you’re ears opened.
Not bad
I like this. It's silly goose music. and I am certainly a silly goose. So many good layered sounds and melodies and interesting pieces! I greatly prefer when the words come in, but this album is SO much better than the first one I listened to by him. (Ambient 1) It's also just produced so well. Which makes sense bc it's Brian Eno. Each song sonically fits it's title and lyrics so well. I loved I'll Come Running. Gimme 10 of those please and thank you!
I listened to this on a train journey while staring out of the window, which might be the optimum way to hear it. It’s a good soundtrack for drifting off into your own little world.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the tracks with vocals but the ambient tracks are 10/10. Incredible vibes.
So peaceful. Listen to this on the beach if you can
strange in an accessible way.
Quelques chansons étaient quand même une vibe (notamment Zawinul/Lava), mais le début n’était pas assez mélodieux à mon goût
Overall: 8/10 This is a transitional album for Brian Eno as it blends poppier music with some more ambient stuff. I kind of wish there were a couple more pop songs on here but it doesn't make much of a difference to the quality of the music. It's obvious that Eno was ready to take the next step toward ambience anyway. Fav Song: The Big Ship Least Fav Song: Little Fishes
Very interesting
3.9/i can see why he's one of the greats. very eery but also beautiful sounding album
This album was very fun i loved the sound Idk who this guy is but he seems very cool cuz he made quite the album
Beautiful
Truly glorious
I did not enjoy this as much as either the ambient album or Here Come The Warm Jets, but it was still a good listen. 3.5
Good for the plane ride I listened to it on. Eno was definitely ahead of his time and there is some groundbreaking stuff here. It can also be hard to focus in on at times with the ambience. But I’m working at it!
What we can expect from a Brian Eno album. Thoughtful and ambient.
Beautiful
Background vibes
Loved it so much more than I anticipated from the genre. Great one to listen to as I was working. Lots of really cool beats. I bet a lot of people really hate this though.
I thought I would find Brian Eno twee and pretentious But this is the 2nd album of his I’m giving 4 ⭐️ This is an oddly affecting collection that loses nothing through it mostly being instrumentals And the title track is the theme to the old BBC arts show Arena. Always loved that bit of music but never knew it was Eno
Great soundscape album from one of the originators of the genre. Excited to hear more from him on this list, really enjoyed this one
Very nice background ambience.
I think I like this one a little less than "Here Come the Warm Jets" but there it was a thing where I warmed up to so many of its ideas as well how Eno integrated so many cool and interesting little things to a genre that otherwise is kinda there for me like Glam Rock. Here is more just straight up the crossroads of rock and electronic ambient which both sound good and he still is adding new ideas to it that I'm really enjoying, but I think I'll need time to really sink my teeth into this one.
This was a really interesting album conceptually and in execution. I'm really surprised I liked it, to be honest. Personal enjoyment: 4/5 Relevance to this list: 5/5
You had me at Eno and Fripp! Yes, I’m one of those “olds” that think King Crimson hung the moon… Super weird and unique in its vision. Transitional between the rock and minimalism/ambient phases of Brian Eno’s recording career. An important and worthwhile album, but I acknowledge won’t be to everyone’s taste or popular on the radio. 4⭐️
A high 4 for me, i prefer both Eno’s poppier tunes w Roxy Music and his more experimental stuff with Fripp and especially his solo ambient oeuvre - this midpoint on Another Green World is frequently beautiful and sounds great but engages me less than his work either side
That’s Eno-ugh! But like not really cuz it’s great
An enjoyable album that sheds light on his long career.
I definitely prefer Brian Eno as producer to Brian Eno as solo musician, but this album is still very good. It's a strong showcase of a broad skillset. On this listen, one track stood out in particular: "Everything Merges With the Night." It somehow straddles the line between Eno's more mainstream music and his more ambient work.
The best thing this project has done is help me discover Brian Eno, holy shit this dude is great
A really cool ethereal sound that holds up to this day. The sparse vocals create a mood that lets you really settle in.
Better than Coldplay
Very experimental artist..recognised the theme tune that was used for bbc 2's arts programme Arena.
Very good album.
I like it. It's not an album I'd recommend to just anyone, but if they like ambiant music I might suggest they check it out. It's a bit of a mixed bag, but nothing is weird enough to really stand out in a negative way. Standouts Over Fire Island The Big Ship Becalmed Spirits Drifting 4/5
Ben normaal helemaal niet van de ambient, maar vond dit toch best aardig. 4 sterren is meer een waardering naar Brian Eno dan naar het album an sich
very weird but very nice
I love background music. Go ahead give me sweet nothings, Brian!!!
Different (affectionate)
I like Brian Eno, but have never listened to this before (another artist with a daunting back catalogue)...or so I thought. Several of the tracks rang a bell with me, especially the lovely title track which I had to google to find out why it was so familiar (it was used as the title music for UK docuentary programme 'Arena'). an accessible stepping stone between the glam rock stuff and the later ambient excursions.
Harmikseni olin tätä Enon levyä kuunnellut vähemmän kuin muita. Onneksi asian voi tästä eteenpäin korjata! Erinomainen 4/5
This is kinda strange, but I really like it. And the musicians joining him on the records are incredible also.
This one is a lot better than Before and After Science. When “ambient musician Brian ENO” sticks to the ambience, it works a lot better than when he does stuff that other artists do better.
Old sour puss, the king of ambient strikes gold again.
First time listening to this, despite being fond of a lot of things ol Sourpuss dipped his fingers in - I almost turned it off to listen to something else during the first song but then it got hooks into me and I listened to it while I tackled a little diy project. I need to return with headphones and focus.
Very good Eno standard.
Beautiful!
Really neat. Eno is a wizard. Must-listen #109.
Very pleasantly surprised. Will definitely be giving it another listen.
Not completely my cup of musical tea but a I can hear how influential this has been and it has beautiful ambient and pop moments.
Took a couple of lessons to click with me. Really good album. Some of the instrumental songs are amazing.
It was a nice slow and relaxing merry-go-round
Sky Saw // St Elmo’s Fire // In Dark Trees // The Big Ship // I’ll Come Running // Everything Merges With The Night // Spirits Drifting
De Brian Eno me esperaba la hostia en verso y no es el caso; aún así me gustó bastante.
I wasn't feeling it at first but the back half of this album was decent. Good instrumentals and fitting vocal work. 'Becalmed' was my fave.
Really nice
++: Sky Saw, In Dark Trees, The Big Ship, I'll Come Running, Another Green World, Sombre Reptiles, Little Fishes, Becalmed, Zawinul/Lava, Everything Merges with the Night, Spirits Drifting +: Over Fire Island, St. Elmo's fire, Golden Hours 8,8/10
Interesting electronic music album.
It reeks with innovation and the influences are pretty wide-ranging. This is the first 80s album. Or another prog album? I'm not sure. I like it, tho. 4/5
Up front I will say that as an ENO fan, my bias will skew this review. Responsible for no less than 5 of my favorite albums (Devo's "Are We Not Men?", Talking Heads' "Fear of Music," Bowie's "Low" and "Heroes," and U2's "Joshua Tree") Eno's contribution to music can't be understated. This album nicely bridges his earlier solo work with the ambient era. Every song is different stylistically: from the proto-ambient "Zawinul/Lava" and "Little Fishes" to the Beach Boyish experiment "Everything Merges with the Night." Challenging and still listenable. Creatively courageous. Eclectic, and BONUS Phil Collins appearance!
I was worried about all the Eno, but this album was perfect background music (in a good way). Experimental and quirky, yes, but with actual songs that sounded like songs.
Feels make you feel good
Good album
One of Eno's most accessible discs - that I probably haven't listed to since college. I think it holds up quite well. I would have given it a 3.5 if half starts were possibe but I'm leaning up to a 4 given how influential he was/is.
A good listen and hugely influential. I really like The Big Ship. Overall it’s nice to have on and is a good blend of ambient and lyrical.
I think Eno is a genius and if he'd had a better voice or some pop star charisma, would be in par with Bowie. He consistently makes interesting, forward looking, clever music that still has a great rhythm and hook to it. When this process is over im going to go through his discography and do it in order.
major fan of this one
As my first Brian Eno experience I almost instantly understood just WHY does Bowie's Low and "Heroes" sound like that. I like it. It's a fun project. The negative part of it, is that I just can't imagine a particular reason to go back to it. Maybe to listen to in a background. Plus, I'm not sure if the album has *any* theme. It's nice, it's the perfect amount of experimental. But what about it? It's probably somewhere between 4 and 5.
Liked this more than I anticipated.
I didn’t understand a thing that happened but it was a pleasant ride
I’m a huge Brian Eno fan, but strangely not of this. It’s good. It’s just not his best work
I enjoyed this semi-ambient project. From the wikipedia article it seems like this is a pretty landmark album for ambient music which is interesting.
The bridge between Eno the band member and Eno the ambient artist. Another Green World is strongest when Eno gets everyone to do as little as possible and just lets the magic slowly evolve - they are not bad by any means (how could they be when you look at that backing band), but I probably would have preferred a non-vocal version.
I actually very much enjoyed this. His music can be tough but most of this was decent. Helped it was on in the background while working though. If I had it on in the car or just the music, might have dropped a few stars
Some ground-breaking albums are dull to go back to, so long after their original impact. This, however, is still a refreshing listen - great use of space, of unusual sounds, and full of hooks.
Eno's magnum opus, depending on who you ask. If you ask me, I am thoroughly convinced that Brian Eno is a musical genius whose resume shows consistently innovative and spectacular albums throughout. Another Green World is an atmospheric treasure trove of sounds to delight the ears. The making of this album involved much experimentation, and I would argue that those experiments were successful.
Took a few listens to grow on me, but it did. Favorite track: The Big Ship
an album that will surely grow on me the more i listen to it.
Eno as we often think of him starts here. Excellent music for a misty early morning.
Very chill
lowkey be sounding like minecraft music
Fav: Becalmed Least Fav: Sky Saw Rough start, but man some of those ambient tracks are beautiful. Eno does ethereal so well
As I said in my review of Here Come the Warm Jets, it’s pretty hard to dismiss Eno’s overall contributions to music. The man has been around, and done a lot. And Another Green World is possibly the most acclaimed record solo he’s ever released. Personally, I believe it’s on par with that previously mentioned record. Now why is that? This takes the more rock-oriented songwriting style of his first three records and benches it. I say benched because some of these songs can definitely still be considered art rock in many ways. But it’s not as glam rock focused, and relies more on electronic elements. It’s so interesting seeing how he was making music that could be classified as ambient before people even really knew what that word meant. Ambient releases were sparing before the late 70s and into the 80s. And Eno was way head of the curve. In this same year, the number one song was Love Will Keep Us Together by Captain & Tennille. And of course, Eno would go on to give ambient music its name and really define what it meant only three years later. It makes sense why his contributions helped shape some of the most acclaimed records of Bowie’s career. They are very similar people, in the sense that they put so much of themselves into creating music in a unique way that challenges not only the listener, but themselves. And they always adapted to changes in technology and recoding methods. They were never sticklers about that kind of stuff, and were always open to new ideas. Only five of the fourteen songs here feature vocals, and I think the ones without vocals are where this album really shines. Eno really create a unique atmosphere with his sounds. It’s like the musical equivalent to spending a day in a Modernist Le Corbusier inspired home. I really like the ambient stuff the most. He is honestly a master of the genre, and it’s fun to see the early stages of what he was developing. Unfortunately some of the deeper cuts aren’t as interesting. But this album is short enough, and has enough variety from song to song, for me to feel like it’s a justifiable listen. Rating: 7/10
wish i could rate it 4.5/5 cause I would say there's no real stand out track on the album but they're all really nice and just pleasant to listen to with enough going on to keep you engaged with the album, it's not too long and it flows really well from track to track. even the more vocal stuff has nice styling the lyrics are good sometimes metaphorical but just beautiful how they fit the music. Almost like if Radiohead were a 70s band this is the sort of album they'd make sonically at least.... especially with the track dark trees or Becalmed....
Solid.
Pretty good. Can see where he was going and ultimately ended up.
It’s a very difficult album to explain really. Green World works in some funk into the ambience, there’s not a ton of vocals overall. I really do enjoy all of Eno’s work, I truly believe he’s a genius and this album is another great addition to his work. You also have Phil Collins and John Cale in on the act here as well which doesn’t hurt. I went thru this 3 times today without trouble, works great as a background album but you find the true genius of it if you pay attention. The Big Ship was my favourite. 4 stars
Experimental and haunting. You can hear the same soundscape he added to Bowie during the Berlin years.
I really like Brian Eno.
4.5/5
4 - such a serene and soothing listen
Brian Eno’s influence in modern and ambient music can’t be denied. The same can not be said for his contribution to the art of singing. Loved this album except for the tracks with vocals. He is a legend!
This has been the first weird/off the wall album that I've really enjoyed. Nothing was forced, but your ears and mind were opened up to different perspectives. If I still got high this would be a delightful escape. I would pair this appropriately with a ying yang blotter or some California sensemilla. Eno has an illustrious career and it was really fun to read about him. This guy has done it all!
Experimental and pleasant, songs do not overstay their welcome 4.2
Was prepared to not like this as I haven’t really been into the eno I’ve heard, although I appreciate him as a producer. Wasn’t really impressed and then I heard the solo on st Elmo’s fire. That drew me in and there were nuggets sprinkled throughout. Not a huge fan of the vocals but I have a feeling this will grow on me. I need to give this time to percolate. Can trace the impact of this on bands like bon over, talk talk, and Radiohead.
Art pop. Ambiental. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Ambling. Ambient and Ambivalent.
8/10 Fun
Wonderful production. The ambient tracks especially work for me. Only one thing holds this back for me; I've never been a fan of Brian's vocals. With more spins they may grow on me though. *Heard before
Virkelig godt ambient musik, men den forrige Eno gjorde lidt større indtryk på mig
It's Eno. Of course it's brilliant but I like Music for Airports better
Not bad
A very good listen.
This must have seemed strange when it was released. Brian would have been known to the Glam Rock / Arthouse Rock audiences, and he'd yet to connect with Devo, Talking Heads etc....and out comes this oddly dream-like album. It's a classic now, tho' still unknown to the masses. It hints at so much that would come later. Well worth a listen.
I wish every song sounded like I'll Come Running
3.6
Very pleasant. Some of these songs make me feel like I'm in a dream. 4
Great Early solo work, Transitional as he searches for his voice.
This one was a lot of fun and I had no idea who this artist was
Immediately I had to do a deep dive on who takes inspiration from Brian Eno. The sounds of this album have to lend some inspiration to works of hyper pop. I was really surprised by this album and it scratched a itch. I could have done without some of the vocals and enjoyed the album instrumentally particularly the first track Sky Saw
4 stars. Loved Eno's ambient stuff before this one but when I finally gave it a shot it hooked me.
Yeah, this is my shit.
This is a pretty cool record. The birth of ambient music by Eno! It's a nice and pleasant album. Super easy listening. Perfect for certain moods but maybe a little slow if you like more upbeat music. I love the electronic aspects and the cool production on it. There is a lot of variety in sounds and noises that make it interesting.
Another review to mention my shitbox car within a week? Yes, yes it is. The thing about this album is that it's actually pretty decent. I like the way it layers, and I like the way that mostly it doesn't really have a point. What is problematic is that some of the sounds that are layered in are exactly the sorts of sounds you might expect an elderly, shitbox car to make as its wheelbearings go, or its water pump knackers itself trying to keep more fluids circulating than leaking onto the ground. You'll have to stop the music every so often if you're listening to it in an area that has any sort of mechanical activity going on.
captivatingly peaceful
I'm a fan of Eno & his work
Almost too pleasant
Great music; very close to a 5
This was really damn cool and I never would have listened to it if not for this project.
Better than I anticipated. Can see why he is the GOAT. 3.5/5
I love Eno!!
Now this is a cool album. Something that’s actually innovative and weird (in a mostly good way). You can hear how Eno’s sound influenced other legendary artists he worked with, like Bowie and Talking Heads. He also seems to be laying the ground work for what will become post punk in a few years as well as anticipating post rock. Most of the songs with lyrics sound like a meeting of the Beatles' more whimsical songs with the distorted guitar parts Brian May was famous for in Queen. The first track is a cool, atmospheric vibe. Very post punk, meshed with psychedelic rock, and a bit of funk. That bass slaps. The lyrics (all 4 lines) are a bit too meta and on the nose, but it’s still a really cool song. The bass is a standout on this album. I’ll have to check out more stuff by Percy Jones. The guitar solo on “St. Elmo’s Fire” is also really cool — I know Robert Fripp is legendary, but I haven’t listened to too much of his work, so this was a nice intro for me. “In Dark Trees” is another dark, atmospheric piece. I can hear a direct link from this song to early The Cure (Carnage Visors had to have been influenced by this). It also has similarities to Peter Gabriel’s brief foray into post punk on Melt, which makes sense given Phil Collins’ drumming work on this album. Some of the instrumentals are a little too New Age mysticism for me — "Little Fishes" in particular sounds like it's trying to combine East Asian-inspired sounds with crazy effects you'd hear in a more trippy Disney sequence (like the Heffalumps and Woozles in Winnie the Pooh). Overall I enjoyed the album, but there were a few misses for me. I’s pretty mind blowing that this came out in 1975. It’s super ahead of its time. 4/5
I love Brian Eno, especially as a producer. He’s played a major part in several of my favorite albums of all time with Talking Heads, Bowie, etc., and I love his ambient solo work. I’ve heard this album many times, and I think I “respect” it more than I enjoy it. It sounds pretty far out in a good way, but it’s never quite connected with me as the masterpiece it’s typically described as. It’s still very good. My favorite songs are the instrumentals, and I suspect Eno himself realized he good do more with instrumentation than his voice.
Does not feel like a 70s album. Experimental, atmospheric music that has a few songs with lyrics. The lyrics are overall okay, but I was really impressed by the way they used synths to make you feel like you’re rolling over waves. The songs are shorter, and I enjoyed most of them. Standouts: Over Fire Island, St Elmo’s Fire, The Big Ship, Another Green World, Sombre Reptiles, Becalmed, and Spirits Drifting.
HL: "St. Elmo's Fire", "Sombre Reptiles", "Golden Hours", "Becalmed" consider me becalmed July 16, 2024
Brian Eno seems to have had the same frustration with the limitaitons of 60s/70s pop rock sound as the prog guys, but had the opposite response - instead of cramming every song full of as many instruments and notes and time signatures and mythology as possible, he stripped it apart and slowed it down - opening up the expanses within glam rock in a way made possible by the synths and new recording technology and some very talented (prog) musicians to support him. Robert Fripp really lets loose on some of these songs in such a distinctive wierd way. Much more chilled than Here Come the Warm Jets, but not yet as fully ambient as Music for Airports, on Another Green World Eno has the patience to get wierd make textural music that shimmers and glistens and ebbs and flows and washes around, gently filling up the space that comes when you take away structuring devices like verse/chorus/bridge. It's spacious music that conjures a world, a wierd alien world that's just familiar enough to invite you in. It's tenderly melancholy, pensive and delicately optimistic.
It’s hard to review ambient albums like this sometimes because it’s music that’s meant to be in the background so I’m doing other stuff while I listen but then by the end I only remember a vague pleasant feeling and can’t say much more about the actual music because I was zoning it out by design. Going off that feeling, though, I enjoyed this a decent amount plus the title track was memorable in its own right.
Sometimes spellbinding, usually pretty, occasionally sleepy. Great texture across the board. Highlights: The Big Ship, I'll Come Running, Another Green World, Becalmed, Everything Merges With The Night
One of those albums that is more influential than it is enjoyable, which is not to say it’s a poor album at all. Put another way: “Look closely at the most embarrassing details and amplify them”
It took me a bit of time to get into it, mainly because I feel like I was overthinking it and it's also not quite my style. I'm not a huge fan of his voice but the production is impeccable and it's very interesting musically. Overall I think it's a good album.
This is a prime example of Enovision. Sit back, relax, and enjoy the show.
4.5/5. The Big Ship is a song that will change your life, incredible textures and soundscape from such a genius. This dude understands music.
Amazing album. 4.5 on rym
I really didn't think I was going to like this and walked away really liking it. It's just really well composed, catchy, and relaxing.
6/4/24. Wasn't fmailiar with Brian Eno before, but loved the sounds! Was right up my alley with my alternative and electronic side. Sounds pretty futuristic for its time, and definitely hear the influence through today through a lot of artists.
4 - I was worried that, since this is more ambient than Here Come the Warm Jets, I wouldn't like it nearly as much, but this is still really good. It's got this sad feeling behind it that I really liked. It can be atmospheric, but it's also got some vocals here and there to pique my interest again. I could see myself liking this one even more with a relisten in the future.
Definitely an artist who is growing on me through this journey.
super fun
First half of the album is middling rock/progressive rock. Back half of the album is the interesting electronic moods and textures that Eno would become known for, giving a hint of AMBIENT 1: MUSIC FOR AIRPORTS to come.
I fell a bit behind, ppl and I listened to this album a couple weeks of days ago but wanted to listen again before the review. It was interesting, but not as cool as I had thought that it may have been on the first listen.
I don't think that I can claim to be pleasantly surprised by Brian Eno anymore. So I guess I'm not surprised but this was pretty pleasant. I quite liked a few tracks and didn't dislike any. Good good.
This was a very interesting album that I’m happy to have heard. I liked it more when I put on headphones and on the second listen.
Not insightful about ambient or electronica, but if I were I would want it to sound like this. Dreamy but not one for all night--you wake up partly and begin to hum along familiarly, and a few demand you pay attention. You might even recall some of it throughout the day.
One I've had in my collection since college. Hard to get too excited about it, but at the same time, the great songs are pretty damn great. Each song is a haiku, stripped down to its essentials. I can't find any fault with each tune, but as an album, it gets a bit much. I find myself tiring of the whole thing about halfway through side B. Still, the musicianship is amazing thorughout, especially the bass playing by Percy Jones and guitar by Robert Fripp.
I love the use of vocals, their limited use really makes them stick out and it was a cool effect
7.5/10
The OG ambient artist.
Pretty good, started off a bit meh, pulled it back mid to end
Been on bit of an Eno kick lately.
More good background music.
I enjoyed this Eno record, listened to it multiple times and yet I can only just barely remember half of the songs. Most of the tracks don't standout quite as much as Taking Tiger Mountain (By Strategy) which is one of my personal favorites of the non-ambient Eno albums. The sound of the instruments is, frankly, quite pleasing. I could throw something like this on just about any time and be glad I did.
Really like Brian Eno, the songs with vocals reminds me of early Pink Floyd
Probably the best album of his
I wasn't really looking forward to this as I'm not always into instrumentals and Eno is sort of hit or miss for me on this list so far, but I rather enjoyed this. Good music to just chill to.
4.2
This is a great mood setting album
listened 2x. 3.6/5
This album holds a special place in my music library, Brian Eno's discography, and music history. It's an imperfect album (hence the 4), but that's part of what is so great about it. It represents the messy and uncertain transition between Eno's art pop Warm Jets era and his ambient work on Discreet Music and Music for Airports (an easy 5/5). While this album boldly displays a chaotic transition between two drastically different musical eras, it stands on its own as a unique album. The only things going against this album are that some of the instrumental cuts weren't as flushed out as they could be 4.4/5.
Beautiful at times, corny at others! I like it, but mostly because it clearly hints at what was to come from Eno.
I love Eno, more so the later ambient stuff but this gives a good look ahead to what is coming. He’s a sonic genius.
favourite song: st elmos fire. neat
I loved the space like ambient sounds throughout and the songs with vocals were pretty great, except one near the middle seems to be out of place on the album. Overall still a great listen though.
Eno's fills and textures evolve into the song structures themselves. He makes so much possible for others to follow.
3.5 - I'm not sure what to make of this album, I really enjoyed parts but other parts felt like they were just a bit nothing. It didn't offend me but also didn't make me feel too much. Maybe a re listen at some point.
Love Brian. Another fantastic album here. Beautiful blends of pop songs, experimentation, instrumental tracks, ambient elements. Not a bad track on the album in my view. However do think it slightly lacks elite punch. Fave Tracks: St Elmo’s Fire, Another Green World 4.4/5
Actually brilliant. Loved the vibe. Ethereal music that makes you feel shut and think about life.
Interesting, but not always engaging.
When I saw it mostly instrumental, I was not looking forward to it, but this is really good.
The only thing I remember about Brian Eno is that his music was considered at the time to be so avant garde/weird that I gave myself the benefit of the doubt and never listened to it. In the time since then, I've listened to some pretty weird shit, so let's see how this goes. Were I to have been stoned out of my gourd in 1975, I think I would've loved listening to this on repeat through headphones while staring out the window. Very clean production, of course, and that makes falling into "the zone" easier and more interesting. Best songs (to me): - THE BIG SHIP - I'LL COME RUNNING - SOMBRE REPTILES Trippiest: - SOMBRE REPTILES - LITTLE FISHES - GOLDEN HOURS Best surprise: - Exactly halfway through GOLDEN HOURS a smiling guitar pops in for a visit "I can't see the lines I used to think i could read between Perhaps my brains have turned to sand Oh me oh my" (GOLDEN HOURS) And speaking of surprises, now that I'm 75% through it, I realize I really like this album and will likely find it again when I just wanna watch the back of my eyelids and zone out. See especially ZAWINUL/LAVA. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ [Last song, SPIRITS DRIFTING, is a throwaway.] ________________________________ 🎧 LPs reviewed: 47 🎧 LPs left to review: 954 🎧 LPs I found great/relevant enough to be mandatory listens (5): 11 🎧 LPs I *might* include in my own list (4): 16 🎧 LPs I will certainly *not* include in mine (1-2): 11
This must have lived in one of the many 70’s share-houses I occupied, because I know it so well, but do not own it. I own the vinyl of his first 2 solo albums & the one he did with Fripp before this, but I don’t know them nearly as well as I know this. And I have to say I lost interest when he went on his ambient trip. This is such a good record. He might only sing on 5 tracks, but they are all such good tunes, especially St Elmo’s Fire & I’ll Come Running, both of which feature Fripp on guitar. Really, I didn’t know the term Frippertronics until I saw it on the liner notes of The Roches’ debut album (1979), but, according to Wiki, this Eno album was the first to use this tape-delay system of Fripp’s & it fits perfectly. As for the instrumentals, they are also engaging - In Dark Trees uses a rhythm generator & no other musicians & sounds like an outtake from Autobahn, which had been released by Kraftwerk in November 1974; Little Fishes & The Big Ship sound exactly like their titles; & the trifecta of tunes (7-9) featuring only Eno (title track/Sombre Reptiles/Little Fishes) are just terrific. I’ve listened to it half-a-dozen times since yesterday. Outstanding.
Another Green World I’m pretty familiar with this album, although for my Eno ambient needs I normally go to Ambient 1, Music for Films, Ambient 4 or Apollo, so know those a bit better. Generally though all his albums up to Apollo, whether ambient or not are all very good listens This is very good though. In Dark Trees is my standout of the ambient focused tracks, while I’ll Come Running and Sky Saw are my favourites of the more ‘traditional’ songs. Nice little hit of TV nostalgia with the title track, think it was the Arena title sequence with the bobbing bottle. He really is very good at creating these ambient soundscapes - they manage to combine a sense of flow and movement with a sense of direction. He’s great at building little off centre melodies and hooks with interesting rhythms and structures that convey a particular emotion or feeling. The constituent parts aren’t necessarily that crazy but he brings them together in such a great way. Obviously he’s doesn’t have the greatest voice but it adds to the atmosphere and feeling too. Robert Fripps guitar is great throughout as well. Couple of years before Low and Heroes, you can see how Eno and Bowie took the ambient/instrumental further on those two albums. Sky Saw in particular seems to be a signpost. It probably sits at a level below Ambient 1 for me. Despite it being very very good it does feel like a bit of a collection of tracks, whereas Ambient 1 feels conceptually very complete, so for that reason I’ll go for a nice ambient 4 ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Don't like this as much as other Eno albums from the era but still some great moments - Fripp's solo on St Elmo's Fire!!!
Enjoyable music to wake up to. Relaxing
thank you brian eno
fun little album, good times had by all
honestly didn't expect to like this one all that much but it was pretty neat. the songs have a lot of uniqueness and character to them despite just being little experimental pieces, and thankfully none of them are long enough to overstay their welcome. the ones with lyrics also stand out, and i really liked how the title track reminded me of some of the mellow electronic Minecraft music. favorites: st. elmo's fire, the big ship, I'll come running, another green world, zawinul/lava
I dig this and will likely revisit. Reallly like I’ll Come Running
Too tier stuff from a visionary of the genre
Just what I needed today! This album is a special little gem. Brian Eno is hit or miss for me, but he is undeniably talented. I didn't care for the Ambient Airport stuff, but I find this a much more satisfying blend of soundscapes and whimsy. There's a dreamy quality to these songs that is warming and engaging, rather than cold and impersonal, which I find some of his more experimental music to be. Nicely done on this one, Eno! I dig it.
Sonically unique and pleasant to the ears.
Brian Eno is on this list a lot, both directly and indirectly. I think this album merits inclusion but isn’t prefect. There are some songs that are pure bliss, but the album drags just enough to hold it back from a five.
Would be a 5 star if it wasnt for the vocals on it. Still this is the strongest 4 stars I’ve given so far
I like this, it was interesting and different.
Quirky and good
I don’t know what I was expecting, but I wasn’t expecting that ear-gasm. I really really liked it, and it would probably get 5 stars from me after repeat listens. I should get onto that.
I'unno if I have any thoughts about the vocal tracks, but the ambient ones? Aw yeah, **that's** the good stuff. Nice to hear what Eno can do outside of "produce U2 albums."
A wonderful transition from Eno's early work to his ambient pieces.
A good album! That Brian Eno period where he actually had lyrics. Works both as background music and something to really listen to.
Interesting
Deserving to be on this list. Not for everyone but quite good when you're in the right mood. Soft 4
Hat mir gut gefallen.
Very different than the other Eno albums I've gotten on this list. This album veers into a more mainstream style with lyrics and all. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this. 4/5.
Erstaunlich moderner Sound und Mix (liegt am Remaster?) Melodien teilweise fast schon kitschig aber geniale elektronische Musik für ihre Zeit.
If this album is playing, I’ll Come Running.
1st listen Wasn’t expecting much but that’s a stellar ambient album
Drôle d’album, à un moment donné j’suis comme rentré dans une transe et je ne fesait qu’un avec ces drôle de sons, pour ça je lui donne unpoint bonus
Rating: 7/10
Very intriguing from what i heard so far. This mans whole take on music and his vast and diverse discography are truly remarkable. The album cover is really cool as well. Haven't properly listened it all yet, but generally I like it quite a bit. 8/10
Favorite Songs: Golden Hours Interesting listen, quite spheric while being not unenjoyable. Could benefit from multiple listens.
C'était sympa, pas trop mou ni trop endiablé
I listened to this a second time and talked myself into a 4 (it's probably like a 3.5 to me). It's honestly just a nice listen. It's a bit experimental for sure, but in a way that doesn't feel overly art-y or complicated. Only like 5 of the songs have lyrics so there are a few times where it's a bit easy to zone out in a bit of a trance, but every few songs something catches my attention and pulls me back in. Favorite song: Golden Hours Other: St. Elmo's Fire, The Big Ship, I'll Come Running, Becalmed 11/29/23
chill ambient
Surprisingly good! Some duds but a lot of really good songs that were ahead of their time and still sound very fresh!
Took a few listens but really like this one
My introduction to this album was Sky Saw being featured on the soundtrack of Dogs in Space. Watch it for the strange context. Anyway I got given a tape of it and maybe it was a bit beyond my 15 year old brain and definitely a world removed from the Bowie and Talking Heads Eno I was used to. I appreciate it these days. File under uneasy listening
excellent. way cooler than I expected. elements of ambient, space rock , way more. real good stuff there Brian
Brian Eno is great. Awesome mix of rock and classical.
Being a massive enthusiast of ambient music, 'Another Green World' by Brian Eno has left an indelible mark as one of the genre's finest, potentially serving as a significant inspiration for the works of my favorite artist, Aphex Twin The album's unparalleled musicality and innovative compositions have shaped the very essence of ambient music
This is basically the foundation of both Bowie’s “Low” and Iggy Pop’s “The Idiot”. This isn’t an album you have to truly and deeply listen to. Put it on and just let it fill the aether.
Brian Eno bitches
3.5/5
Brimming with creativity. A piece of art. I actually prefer instrumental music. Almost perfect, except for the singing. Not that the singing is done badly, and it's also done in a way similar to an instrument. Wish I could give it 4.5 stars. Almost perfect.
It falls somewhere between sardonic post glam Brian Eno and ambient Brian Eno. Not his best, but possibly the best Eno album to educate/indoctrinate new listeners?
Besides the choice to start this album off with such a wild song that made me almost decide to skip today... it only got better and better. The grating nature of "Sky Saw" is more than made up with by the rest of the tracks ethereal vibes. 9/10 good music to listen to at work and wish you were smoking at home to.
Good background work music
Eno's works are usually a hit and miss for me and I didn't think much of this album at first. The opening tracks are not that interesting but the later works like 'Sombre Reptiles' really have a strange charm to it. Very much recommended!
As with Roxy Music, I don’t have much context with Brian Eno, as I was born 10 years after this release and have never listened to any of his music, minus Country Life which was given to me here. I wanted to not like Another Green World but I do. There are only about 3 actual songs on this album, the structure reminds me of Radiohead’s Kid A but much brighter and upbeat. It really is a beautiful album, particularly the aptly named Becalmed and everything after it. The production is way ahead of it’s time as expected and to me this feels like the invention of ambient music that many credit with his next album, yet still has some pop elements. 8.4/10
This is WEIRD. I wrote that immediately and then allowed this album to take me on its journey. Aside from a few standout moments, this just kind of became a part of my day. Like, I almost forgot it was playing a few times. It will be in my focus rotation.
Another fantastic Eno record, this one leaning more into the ambient side he’d continue to pioneer
This is the definition of art rock to me. Really great album from Brian Eno, even if it's a little scattered. It's part of its charm.
Unbelievable ethereal tones and instruments all the way. In 2023, it's still an amazing and surprising record.
It's hard to come away from anything Brian Eno does without a massive amount of respect. He is so evidently an artist with a capital A... the kind that someone in the contemporary art world would recognize a bit of themselves in. An experimentalist, an intellectual, but– thankfully for us– he actually walks the walk. I love that. I always come away from anything he does with a little bit of awe, looking up at the structure he's trying to erect. It's often ragged, rough around the edges. But there's really an artist there, amid it all. He's a perfect blend for me between the avant garde and the popular taste. This album has some bright moments. It's just hard to figure out which would have been groundbreaking to contemporaneous listeners, and which (to my ear), sound overplayed. That's because Eno is so massively influential in instrumental music, period– never mind ambient, which he undeniably invented– that any of his best ideas seem like they were destined to be reprinted for the next 25 years by the ambient film scorers and elevator musicians of the world. So I lack context to know what truly breaks the mold. I will say that the title track, Another Green World, always grabs me. I love that kind of immediacy... that's the version of Brian Eno I am unconsciously imitating in my own work. What a great listen. Rough around the edges, and so much less fleshed out than any ambient work is going to be in 25 years. But hey... it's 1975. So rarely does a new sound both break ground and crystallize into a solid form so quickly. This is a lot of broken ground. But what an expanse! 4/5
Haunting and soothing - sheer class
Certified Eno classik
Blassic
Grew on me
Early eno, love hearing what’s to come
Very good. Enjoyed it quite a bit and want to listen more
Nice mix of pop-ish harmonies (one song pretty reminiscent of Animal Collective) and ambient tunes. 3.7/5
When I listened to this album a second time, on my headphones instead of over my speakers, this album kept my full and undivided attention and I recommend anyone that found the sound collages a bit dull to do exactly that. It opened up the album.
I’m pretty sympathetic towards Brian Eno’s solo stuff. 7/10
this was weird but not too weird. also it was the good weird
listened to again weird and wonderful
I liked this one in high school!
Relistening this and collecting thoughts since my browser refreshed and I lost what I wrote. Up front I'm somewhere between a 4 and a 5 here... I had seen Brian Eno's name a lot, but had never listened to his work until yesterday. I don't know what I expected, but this was not it. The album opens on a jazzy number lead largely by a warbling bass line with some electronic sounds interspersed; the song feels as if it wants to pull itself apart, but it keeps driving forward. Love everything about Golden Hours. Such a dreamy atmosphere. The production on this album is top notch and the sounds feel well ahead of their time. I'm a 4 / 5 on this. Found a lot of things interesting and enjoyed the listen.
This was interesting and a bit above average. Still nothing knocking me of my socks, but it's a nice and interesting listen. 3.5/5
En bra Eno.
Weird ass sound scapes. Kind of call but prefer music for airpots
Feels like a soundtrack to a film I would want to watch on hallucinogenics
Mooie introductie voor ambient muziek. Erg bijzonder hoe dit al 50 jaar oud is en zo futuristisch klinkt. Voor nu een 4 maar kan in de toekomst prima een 5 worden.
The transition between classic rock and incorporating synth/industrial rock sounds is incredible. I'd love to hear Phil Collins talk about making this album. I think he hit the drum kit 17 times at most. As a huge Trent Reznor fan I can see where he may have found some inspiration from Eno. This album is awesome.
Gives me the Willy's, but in a good way. I don't want my shoes tied, Eno! Such a trippy album with some crazy electronic noises and mysterious singing. Not sure if I would pick to listen to any Eno albums in my free time, but i know I will definitely be happy to listen if any more come up. This album did drugs then listened to me
More of Golden Hours pls. This album is unique af I love the rock/ambientness it's a jam
A surprisingly fun album! A lot of funky sounds with the altered instruments that Brian employed on the songs, and each of the vocal/less ambient tracks are refreshing as you move through the track list. 8/10
Not even Eno's best album... :)
There's no denying that Brian Eno is a music legend, he is responsible for some of the best known masterpieces, ever. I really enjoyed the experimental nature of this album, and whilst some tracks did give me "alarm clock at 5am vibes" others were the perfect backing to my day.
I am a Brian eno Stan
Good! I enjoyed the ambient and electronic instrumentals.
Brian Eno makes weird songs, and the world of music is all the better because of it. He goes places where most musicians wouldn't even try reaching, but the end result never suffers from being inaccessible or too avant garde. Thank the music gods for his solo stuff, for his influence, and for the work he's made with a lot of our favorite artists. Standout tracks were Sky Saw and I'll Come Running.
A weird and surprising album. Definitely liked the first half better but I can appreciate the craftsmanship! Saved tracks: In Dark Trees, The Big Ship, Golden Hours
4,5
fantastic
Det går vildt for sig
Loved this. Great soundscapes, interesting, well recorded.
Goddamn I love me some Brian Eno. That's been one of the real surprises as I've encountered the albums on this list is how often he shows up in various roles, and how much I like what he does. It helps that I really enjoy ambient music. Another Green World is not my favorite Eno album, but it's great just like all of the others. He runs through a diverse set of styles, but it always sounds like him, and it's good throughout It's so weird that there was so much great music made during the 1970s, and yet all I ever heard on the radio growing up was Zeppelin and Foghat. I'd file a class action lawsuit if anyone other than me seemed to care 4/5
Ian Breno. Other Ween Gran.
What a great album. I really enjoyed the opener and all the tracks leading up to the incredible The Big Ship.

très appréciable reviens quand tu veux
This is some wild stuff; I really dig creative ambient music like this for focusing and getting into a creative groove. I always look up the artist on wikipedia and read about them for these selections, and I learned that Brian Eno invented the oblique strategies card deck! Sounds like this guy might be pretty familiar with LSD and it's effects on the mind :-p Some of this stuff reminds me of King Crimson
Holy cow. I had Brian Eno 4 days ago. I’m not a big fan of Brit glam. But this one is the beginning of ambient music.
Great
Great!
Weird is good
very good while working
4.5
Notes - Second Brian eno album on here - Featuring Robert frappe, Phil collins, John cale - Much more stripped back and ambient focussed than here come the warm jets - More emphasis on piano and synth pads - Eno’s vocals are very reserved and used more as texture than anything else - I started this album definitely not in the right headspace but it really just sucks you in Fav - Golden hours - Synths feel like an ear massage, and I love the little plinky touches and guitar Least fav - Over fire island - Feel like it was missing something 4.5/5
Eeerrrrmmmm uuuuhhhhh
not the biggest fan of music that doesn’t have much as far as lyrics go but this was an exception
He made good things at that time
This album isn’t perfect; some songs are better than others, but MAN this album is years ahead of it’s time. Could have been released today and it would be just as relevant. “The Big Ship” a banger.
I really enjoyed this, an artist I have never heard of, but yet had a big influence over modern music, it’s a list of accomplished musicians on the record sleeve as well It’s one I would listen to again
Art pop. Ambiental. Me ha gustado. Un 4.
Weird. A bit much. But you can find some gems in there still
Banger album, loved it. 9/10
