Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Now I know where ratatat came from Good album to work out to. Very calming

I was expecting something way different than I ended up hearing, and for the better. Didn't have time to write up a track by track review, but this has made it into my rotation.

Good album. What makes it great is that was made in 1975 and sounds like it was made in the last few years.

Eno's early solo records feel like the work of someone who's heard about pop music, been told about pop music and how it generally works, decided to have a go at doing that himself and... wound up making something else. This may be where he comes closest, which means it's still kind of removed from "actual" pop. Fantastic stuff, though, and appropriate that I got this one on Eno's birthday too.

Another artist I'd heard a lot about but never sat down and listened to an album... And am glad I did, it has a lot of the atmospheric "ambient" sounds you'd expect, but I have to admit I thought it was going to be a lot more boring! Layered, doesn't outstay its welcome, a real pleasure to listen to.

Three levels: Sound quality that becomes more and more crystalline, assimilation of electronics that are now on a par with traditional instruments, and the "alienation" of atmosphere that transforms each song into an increasingly complex abstraction. (7/10) FT: The Big Ship, Golden Hours

Easy to listen to while also kind of out there. This is a good space to explore.

The more I hear this album, the more I love it. A year ago I never even heard of Brian Eno. Now, after hearing this and a couple others from this list. I think I’m becoming a fan. 4/5.

As the cover art implies, this is a very quirky, artsy record with strange sound design and production, but it is pretty captivating. Some of the more straightforward songs with Eno's singing sound too goofy ("St. Elmo's Fire", "I'll Come Running", "Golden Hours"), I am much more into the songs focusing on creating fascinating soundscapes ("In Dark Trees", the gorgeous "The Big Ship", "Sombre Reptiles").

I like how this is kind of a best of both worlds situation- Eno is really embracing his newfound appreciation for synth/atmospheric music, while still making a couple of tunes in the vein of Roxy Music and his earlier solo stuff. I found myself geling more with the latter this time, but his minimalist stuff is still pretty impressive to listen to. I can understand if it’s not your thing or if you’re so used to later electronic music that you find it derivative, but I’m all in. Still, this is never going to raise above “sometimes” music for me. B+

Kinda all over the place, but in a good way. This eclectic approach has varying results, but my interest is always piqued and my patience is frequently rewarded. AGW finds efficient and adventurous means to its earworms - it’s texturally rich, diverse, and unabashedly quirky. Songs that didn’t click immediately fell into favor after just a couple spins, a testament to Eno’s strange yet comforting pop sensibilities. 4

A sadness trickles down her tits. She sighs. "Nico, find me a new lover. Mangus has the ball sack of a child and it's repulsed me to my core". Nico unleashes a thunderous boff and sets upon his journey. "Deborah, I will find your king. By golly, if it's the last thing I do, I will find you a new penis to lick your gravy off."

Nice mellow. ambient album to relax to

there was something very creative here. i didn't like all of it. but i appreciated it.

not bad

Really enjoyed this one! I've not really listened to Mr Eno, I only really know him from his collaboration with Bowie but I really liked this so I'll definitely dive deeper in the eno-verse.

Raiment excelent et meileur uque lautre que j’ai eu sur la lsite. 2 albums de eno en 3 jours. On voit beauxoup levoution sur celui ci. 4.25

Much like the other album.. it’s really good in places but wanders perilously close to self indulgent at times…. Yeah pretty decent!

Kind of beautiful

This project has been my introduction to Eno, and I'm starting to understand the impact he had on music. This feels like a transitional album, and I do prefer the more traditional songs which preceded it. But there's also absolutely sonic magic, portals to other worlds heard. Those portals are one-per-song most of the time, but occasionally cross track boundaries.

Skemmtilegt sándskeip, Eno klikkar ekki.

oh brian. makes me want to make an indie coming of age movie thanks brian

lovely, spare and weird.

On the surface, this album verges on feeling unfocused and directionless, but Eno somehow makes this collection of songs feel purposeful and coherent. I'm really interested in the "oblique strategies" cards he uses to construct songs

Really liked it, nice atmosphere and all. Favourite track: everything merges with the night

Beautiful

There are clear echoes of Eno’s work with Roxy Music, David Bowie and Talking Heads/David Byrne on Another Green World. They’re the obvious references, I’m sure there’s tons more, not to mention the recognisable influences on the electronica and ambient music genres in general. There’s also what feels like a subtle oriental bent to many of the tracks which I quite like. The overall effect is a minimalistic, at times uneasy but overall dreamy, ethereal, and accessible oasis of calm for 41 minutes.

I dug this. I can’t make up my mind if all these songs make some sort of cohesive sense or not, but I didn’t dislike the experience. I also had no idea that the “St. Elmo’s Fire” song on here was called that, because ya know… 80’s movies. But I might like this Elmo better than the other one? Maybe? I don’t know - I probably should give that more thought before committing to that on the record.

I like Eno a lot, though I think this is occasionally marred by the extremity of experimentalism. Sure beats the alternative of course.

I liked both the instrumental and lyrical songs on this album. Some of the sounds come across as annoying, but overall there are a lot of parts that are incredible. The lyrics can be a bit generic/unspecific in parts, but they at least pair well with the songs. Highlights: 3, 5, 8, 10, and 11.

This is a great album, tbf its a masterpiece you can loads of different sounds in here (notably bowie of course) as this was enos 'transitional' album, though its often called one of his vocal albums. Its actually more instrumental than vocal and i have heard it called impressionsitic and i dont really have a better term tbf, little fishes puts me in mind of koi, the big ship of a big ship and so on. Its been ages since i have listened to this and i forgot how 'proto-ambient' it is so its good to hear again. Its basically a masterpiece.

Electronic music from 1975, people back then must have HATED this. Really interesting music, well made, definitely before his time. I can't imagine the limitations he had to put this together back then. Lots of unconventional structures to the sound. Some songs are very ambient and great for background noise while working, others are more busy. Good album, first time hearing Eno's music though I've heard the name a lot.

Sounds like it could have been released by an indie artist last year at times. Really great production and inventive synth sound that feels ahead of its time. Lyrics on Golden Hours and I'll Come Running are my kind of sad

Pogged ryancore, eno is a very clever man and i like him :-)

i listened to this on vinyl and it was a vibe like idk

Calm rock with electronic music elements

Lovely little bald man, friends with Jarvis knows his stuff here

A universally acknowledged masterpiece, Another Green World represents a departure from song structure and toward a more ethereal, minimalistic approach to sound. Despite the stripped-down arrangements, the album's sumptuous tone quality reflects Eno's growing virtuosity at handling the recording studio as an instrument in itself

Love this record, Brian Eno has some great meditative music, but this one has a lot more pop sensibilities. Fav tracks: I'll Come Running and The Big Ship. Rating: 4.5/5

The title track is one of those tracks, like The Smiths' 'please please let me get what I want', that is really short but you wish could go on forever. It used to be the BBC Arena title song and I always associate it with the Van Morrison documentary 'One Irish Rover' which was shown on that platform, I even used to think it was a Van Morrison instrumental but since found it was Eno's. Interestingly Eno influenced the man's early 80's albums like Beautiful Vision and Inarticulate Speech of the Heart. Anyway this album is great and does a real good job of invoking a melancholy mood.

The non-vocal tracks are otherworldly, much like life the beauty is found in the mundane, repeating moments.

When first listening I thought "I don't like this too experimental, too minimalist, 1 star!" The I listened to "At Elmo's Fire" and thought "actually that's a good tune, 2 stars" Then I listened to "The Big Ship" and I was fucking transported! It makes it into my future movie project soundtrack. Awesome!

At turns weird and beautiful. Definitely before it's time.

Lovely

Crazy the type of sounds Eno was cooking up as far back as 1975. He's always pushing the frontier of mainstream. It makes sense he's such a pivotal player in the music behind the scenes.

I actually really enjoyed this album. The soundscapes were soothing but also musically interesting enough to not let my mind wander too far. I have only ever encountered Brian Eno as a producer for others, and in that capacity I believe that folks of our generation are perhaps have encountered his influence even beyond our own realization in music and perhaps even film. Will definitely listen to this album and artist again.

Not many great tunes but the whole sound of this album is incredible

Everything is good except when he sings. 4/5 He doesn't sing a lot

Quiero volver a escucharlo

What an album. I was not expecting this but in hindsight based on the album cover I should have. iTunes says this is rock but the only rock I hear is me mining to this very Minecraft-esque music. I love the way there are certain songs with vocals (wasn’t a fan) and other songs that are just short instrumentals. I got Minecraft vibes in Another Green World and Red Dead Redemption vibes in Sombre Reptiles. Just a very eclectic mix of synths and instruments to make this my most surprising album of the week. My Favs were Over Fire Island, The Big Ship, Another Green World, and Sombre Reptiles. Hope we get another album of his on here.

Weird proto-electronica sounds on the first track, though the drums sound way better played by a human. Also the bass is doing some weirdness. St. Elmo's Fire is such a weird track, I love it. wild and weird the whole way though.

I've never listened to much of his work, but I liked this record! Some catchy songs, despite his 'atmospheric' rep

Such gems! Wonderful, mellow, optimistic tunes to space out and focus to.

Very good. Wonder what it sounded like when it came out.

Innovative to the max. Could clearly hear the origins of minimal electro, even techno. Some timeless tracks.

Gorgeous ambient music

Liked this a lot. Golden Hour, Another agreen World, Sky Saw. This album didn’t sound or feel dated. Maybe not keen on the shoe tying lyric but that’s ok. 4.5 stars.

Funky, ambient background music. Good work music.

While this album is creative and very well produced (that's Brian Eno's calling card), it's just not my thing. Most of the songs are strange, ambient electronica tracks, with just a couple songs even having lyrics or traditional structure. This album definitely needed to be on the list, but I don't think I'll be coming back to stuff like this. 3/5

MILDLY interesting

So alike to Bowie's music, in energy and creativity and bewilderingly un-catchy experimentation, that it's a little uncanny. I suppose it makes sense that the two collaborated so often. Sky Saw is just a reimagination of Breaking Glass from Low (1977). Or, I guess, the other way around. And with more diverse instrumentation. Cool strings that don't quite rest on singular, harmonically sound notes. Heavy, cleanly recorded basswork. The latter makes an immediate reappearance in the exotic-sounding Over Fire Island, suggesting it's a bit of a theme. And for only 1975 – before the disco era really launched the "overbearing bassline" trend! Pretty impressive. We get our first taste of "normal" vocals with the *relatively* catchy/melodic St Elmo's Fire, which is about as "60s British" as you can get. But with some serious guitar shredding that changes notes so smoothly, it almost sounds like a wavered synth rather than a guitar. Some lovely harmonising too, though at the expense of the lyrics being impossible to make out. In Dark Trees is the first obvious miss for me. It just fails to be memorable or interesting in any sense. As an instrumental, you tend to have your work cut out for you in keeping audiences engaged. The Big Ship does it substantially better. Those high and low synths, staccato and smooth, contrast so darn nicely. Eno creates a whole dang atmosphere, and one I'd like to experience in real life. Next, I'll Come Running is a weird attempt on late-60s psychedelia that, shockingly, works extremely well. I love the simple, powerful, almost blurry piano performance, the similarly blurry vocal texture, and the light, rushed percussion that creates a busy sound without being too high-energy or overwhelming. Then the title track is fine – solid as a sort of "farewell track" to end side 1 – but it's not as good as its 10 million Spotify streams suggest. Side 2 begins with the continuous instrumental Sombre Reptiles / Little Fishes. Again reminiscent of Low, and specifically its fully instrumental 2nd side. Little Fishes is as ambient as the album gets – although Becalmed and Zawinul/Lava are also in the running, and both of *those* ones are way too boring for their own good. Golden Hours starts off pretty unremarkable, but when that clean, fluttery guitar starts up again, it's pretty great. Everything Merges With The Night sounds straight off Pink Floyd's debut or a Syd Barrett solo record. (And that's a good thing.) Some reviewer really sat down at their computer and decided to write that Another Green World is a "universally acknowledged masterpiece". And then enough people upvoted that to push it to #2 on the review page. The problem is, I don't consider this a masterpiece, so that guy's statement is immediately disproven. 3/5 Key tracks: St. Elmo's Fire, The Big Ship, I'll Come Running

фоновым слушанием не поняла процент инструментала и загадочной тишины к песням, можно потом ещё послушать

I didn't know this band. Fair to good music. A good album overall.

Mildly weird

Not what I was expecting from an album from 1975. It's intriguing and chill leaves room to think.

Although not my favorite, this guy can't make a bad album.

Very well made and mesh of different sounds. Music has gone a long ways since albums like this one.

I was previously familiar with Brian Eno but not this album. This is further into the ambient direction than the last album of his that came up in this exercise. This album still has some conventional tracks with vocals, but most tracks here are instrumental. Even the tracks with vocals are more ambient than most. I did enjoy this album quite a bit, but not sure if it is something that I would seek out just because of how different it is.

It was a sad album. Or this is how o felt about it. Was nice. I liked it

Some of it was truly ass, but after hearing bro's name in the crosswords so often I thought his music would be a lot worse! 3/5 I liked The Big Ship. Also didn't know he sang.

It's fine. Nothing amazing, but nothing awful either

I found this pretty listenable in spite of all the sonic experimenting that Eno is famous for using. Certainly pretentious but still quite creative and interesting in many places.

Takie meh na 3. Nie jest źle, ale progresywny rock to nie jest coś dla mnie.

I don’t really understand who this album is made for, and maybe that’s the point. Art for the sake of art I guess. Sometimes arty experimental music comes off as self indulgent, masturbatory. This album seems to skirt that feeling though

There are hints of a great album in here but also a lot of ambient droning that I could've done without.

That's pretty experimental, but hey! Seems like groove really is king cuz some of these would be huge bummers if not for a pretty tight bass and drum synergy on them. A little weird, but not at all inaccessible. Again, some tight grooves, a few nice melodies and harmony lines when vox do show up. So the good weird. I expected less after hearing Joshua Tree first on this list, a U2 album that Eno produced and then *someone* must have taken a giant dookie over. I'd say 3.

It’s actually great music, but when songs gets even remotely experimental, I don’t enjoy it too much

Some of this was nice, nothing blew my hair back. Will definitely listen again. 3.7

Truly hippie album

It was interesting and mostly a pleasant listen, but not really my jam. I get why it’s on this list, though.

There were some cool arrangements but overall it didn’t really grab me

Loved the ambient parts, less so the songs with lyrics

Not bad but doesn’t do anything for me personally.

Good sounds, good vibes

Some interesting notes and sounds, and I can hear now why it was considered so influential. However, it passed me by a bit, felt like background music for when I was seeking out something more immersive.

Intellectual musicians wanking? It's a fine album no question of the talent involved but seemed a little self-indulgent which is fine it just didn't appeal to myself.

I was skeptical at first but it grew on me. Layered sound to evoke imagery. Could be hipster matcha cafe music.

I think Brian Eno is just one of those artists that checks a lot of boxes to being an artist I should enjoy, but I just can’t get there. Decent album, with some weirdness and musical creativity. Moments of musical beauty throughout. But it just doesn’t click as a complete piece for me. I think the back half is stronger. Overall, I’ll give a 3/5 and maybe it’ll click for me someday.

I like this record. Kinda relaxing

Enjoyable background music.

Notables: - St. Elmo's Fire - I'll Come Running - Golden Hours

It really my cup of tea

I still don’t know if I like Brian Eno - but I sure as shit will come running to tie your shoes.

I hate minimalism everywhere but in music

Ta drug ("Over Fire Island") je kr eksperimentalen. (No, cel album je kr eksperimentalen.) Brian Eno je I guess boljši k producent. Po par instrumentalnih ma "I'll Come Running" vokale. K so nekak na mojem nivoju, k da bi js pela - they're fine. Tud besedilo je, hm, 8 besed vse skp? Je bolj mišljeno, kot na wiki opiše žanr, ambientalno. U, dobr naslov komada ("Sombre Reptiles"). Not quite my cup of tea, ampak za poslušat na sprehodu po polju je blo pa idealno. Kot zanimivost še to - valjda se na albumu pojavljajo hudi glasbeniki, med drugimi Robert Fripp in Phil Collins.

Really pretty record that captures some very ethereal moods. It's very pleasant and easy on the ears, I dig its vibe.

Quite pleasant tunes, good to hear it, thx

I always keep meaning to listen to more Brian Eno, so this was a great opportunity to do so.

Way ahead of its time, as everything Eno does is. But feels like an introduction to Brian as a solo artist and a prelude to some of the seminal work he did in the 80s. Nothing wrong with this album at all and it really makes you want to go and listen to his later works.

I mean it's not bad, it's fascinating but I got bored

I like a bit of ambient music and this was very enjoyable

It was interesting, felt like a prog rock/ folk/ ambient crossover. I enjoyed it enough and maybe it would grow on me more after listening more times. Mostly left me kind of ambivalent. Did enjoy parts of it though.

FAVS (top 3): st elmos fire, the big ship, golden hours mençoes honrosas: little fishes, becalmed, everything merges with the night, spirits drifting gente! o album começou muito mal, ja tava pensando mds esse é um 2 fácil mas dps!!!! melhorou!!!!!! curti galera, só fingir q as primeiras tracks nao existem e viva la vida nota final: 3.5/5

Stick to the instrumentals, Eno.

Transition between ambient and rock.

Hmmm kinda in-between so many things it's almost nothing hhhmmmm, can't say I got a ton out of this. I see how it could be considered influential and game changing, just not really for me 2/3?

Pretty but doesn’t do it for me.

I recognize some of Eno’s style from his collab with Bowie and Roxy Music. I recognized some songs. Okay to listen to in the background

Background music.

⭐️⭐️⭐️

There's a lot I like here, and a few things I don't like. Brian Eno is a mega influential musician and I think a lot of people credit him with this ethereal electronic drone sound in a pop context. Pierre Henry, Stockhausen, John Cage, and some others were doing it before Brian Eno, but I think that Eno was the better one to bring this sound to wider audiences. Those previous composers often made music that was interesting to make, but not always interesting to listen to, but Eno makes music that is inherently adjacent to "pop". I like this! What I don't like is that it kind of falls into the trap that a lot of genre blenders fall into; where one side of it (the pop side) sounds kind of weak, and the other side (the drone-y ambient) are also just kind of thin. When I listen to great pop artists, I get all kinds of emotion in the vocals, I get poetic lyrics with great pop punchlines. Here, I get "I'll come running to tie your shoe" repeating and repeating and repeating in a very flat emotional delivery. It's like a very weak sounding Beatles-esque attempt. When I listen to "Spirits Drifting", I do kind of feel like I'm listening to ghastly apparitions floating in the sky. It's cool, but almost too crunchy and dissonant and not entered in a tasteful way, if that makes sense? When I listen to other experimental electronic artists who use dissonance this much, it's usually not something that immediately starts a track and forces a kind of jarring sound right at the beginning. That's the beauty of drone music is that you usually have time to develop; you can tease and gradually introduce the antagonist. It usually makes the payoff that much better. But I can't be too negative really; this is 1975 which is really amazing for the time. I wouldn't hate on a delta blues musician playing a guitar that's slightly out of tune because man that instrument probably never had a string change. So why would I be too negative about a person experimenting with synths and atmosphere when they were kind of alone doing it?

Mostly instrumental ambient kind of stuff with a few songs with singing. It was ok but I’d be fine never hearing it again.

ENO is ENO interesting ambient never really challenging but listenable I enjoyed.

Sure why not, it had it's moments.

Not my thing. I like the bass

His third album. Experimental / Art Rock. Firstly, and unsurprisingly, the production on this is excellent. This is the bridge between Eno the Rock Star and Eno of the Ambient Music. This era of music fascinates me. You have this experimental stuff and Prog Rock with it's hugely complex music, huge stadium Rock bands, Glam Rock, Pop as always and then Punk comes along and punches everything right in the face. Then we get Post Punk and the New Wave. 1974/75 to say 1983/84 with all those nuances and directions in music was some era !

I think there’s some interesting Brian Eno evolution going on with this album. Because you can hear the skeleton of a normal pop song in the first couple track (which I don’t really enjoy), and then the shift into quasi-ambient music towards the end. For me though, this pales in comparison to Music for Airports, since the ambient tracks are almost too complicated, and short enough that I really can’t get fully doused in the ambiance. It’s a 5/10 for me today.

It was a really interesting experience. The album feels very atmospheric and thoughtful, almost like walking through different small landscapes made of sound. Some tracks are more like songs, others feel like little instrumental sketches, but together they create a calm and reflective mood. What I liked most is how the album doesn’t try to overwhelm you. The music is subtle and patient, letting the textures and melodies slowly build their atmosphere. It feels creative and a bit experimental, but still very pleasant to listen to. Overall it left a strong impression on me. It’s one of those albums that feels more like a mood or a place than just a collection of songs, and I can see myself coming back to it again.

This is an interesting one. I can't say I loved all of it, but there's some good, experimental stuff in there. You can tell that this was very influential to a lot of later musicians who I adore, even if it's not entirely something I want to listen to on its own.

The rock tracks are good, but there’s not enough in the ambient tracks to make me love this.

Really good album. A 3,5

Better than I expected

68/100.

Fine to listen too but nothing to get too excited about.

Average

Unavailable on Apple Music

Good ambient music, good for reading. St Elmo's Fire is my Favourite.

I really like Music for Airports, but this was a tougher task to get through. Enjoyed the Robert Fripp guitar slinging. Otherwise kind of just an odd journey, but feeling positive so I'll give it 3 stars.

Buena como música "de fondo".

Enoteric

The first 3 songs were a bit nothing but then it really picked up and the rest of the album had a very nice ambience

Experimental and rocky all in one. Quite cool

This album is an interesting listen and seems to speed by really quickly. St. Elmo's Fire is a great pop tune with some fantastic guitarwork. In Dark Trees which follows is a neat weird instrumental. Everything Merges With The Night is also great. It's definitely an album I have to be in the mood for, but today I was.

Ethereal and minimalistic. 3.5/5

Weird und ziemlich atmosphärisch.

Just meh.

A wee bit more experimental than I expected, but still some good stuff on there.

2/12 Nothing stood out. Just an average prog rock album

enjoyed this a lot more than the last brian eno album! the big ship hit me like a ton of bricks. christ

shit was a-ok in my book. 3/5

Some moments of gorgeous beauty. Some moments of meh. Much like life, I suppose.

Nice ambient album that doesn't do a whole lot to stand out, but I'm not sure how much it's trying to. Just very subtle and relaxing if a little droning. Pleasant, but not terribly memorable

Mellow, good for blasting through some tedious spreadsheets. 3/5

Not really sure how I like or dislike this album. Have to listen to it again.

Très bon album, surpris en bien! 3.5/5

3 well wenns schö isch ischs eeeeecht schön so de zweitletst song macht chli öpis und ide erste hälfti ischs chli a mir verbizoge aber het würkli schöni sache gha. DRAEI

hmmm chli en lauwarme ahfang vom album OKAYY st. elmos fire findi reecht cool au n dqrk trees kreiert e atmosphäre woni recht cool find und ich bide erste 2 chli vermisst han weiss nöd, de eno het eifach e cooli stimm, so richtig beruhigend little fishes generational banger jooo ener enttüscht, hanmer iwie chli meh erhofft?

Love the experimentation on this but I wasn’t blown away by much of it. Likely another album I’d need to listen to a few times to “get”

Very Original Sound, not quite my vibe though

I liked this more than I expected because I’ve never been able to get into Roxy music.

Bardzo eklektyczna płyta. Niektóre utwory są naprawdę ciekawe, ale inne są całkowicie paskudne. Taki gar w którym koło marchewki gotuje się stara podeszwa. 5/10

Brian Eno, 4 eme album proposé. Cet album me parait plus original que les 3 autres déjà écoutés ('Here Come The Warm Jets', 'My Life In The Bush Of Ghosts' (notés 2/5) et 'Before And After Science' (3/5)). =>3/5

No doubting Enos talent as a musician and producer but this was just dull, it wasnt awful just really boring

- He can make some pretty sounds - I don't mind the vocals - I can hear influence on stuff 20 years on from this It's just a bit slow and boring. It felt like it needed a bit of spice. Maybe he should add a poppadom to his synthesiser. Though that's just a stupid pun. It has nice moments, but it failed to hold my interest.

surprisingly listenable

I’m most familiar with Brian Eno as a producer, a member of Roxy Music early on, and a running gag on the podcast Sound Opinions. So the year is 1975, and right off the bat this sounds familiar, like a track recorded for David Bowie’s Low (which Eno co-produced and performed on) that was left on the cutting room floor, with Robert Fripp’s unmistakable slashing guitar leading the way. In general I like the ambient instrumentals better than the tracks with vocals (especially the one about running to tie your shoe, which grates). At its best, Eno’s voice reminds me a little of Syd Barrett, but based on this evidence and his production work, he’s better as a soundscape artist than a songwriter or rock persona. That Phil Collins played drums on this release is definitely my new favorite bit of rock trivia.

All of the Eno rock albums are good to great.

Good just no for me

It's weird, but my ears perked up a few times and I didn't hate it.

some songs are gems, others kinda boring

This album has some really great songs but they are balanced out by some really bad ones as well.

A lot of the instrumental pieces didn't hit for me, outside of Becalmed, which may be one of the most beautiful pieces of music I've ever heard. The songs with vocals did a bit better, but not enough to warrant more than a 3-star rating personally

Eclectic. Is there a theme?

This album didn’t really move or register with me. Maybe in 1975 it was revolutionary, but hearing it for the first time now, it doesn’t stand out much compared to the music that followed.

I didnt have high hopes for this album when i saw itunes’ label of prog rock/art rock but it was a pleasant surprise. Nice bit of prog rock/electronica almost. A frw tracks with lyrics but the better tracks were the instrumentals with just Brian Eno on synth, drums, etc. The other tracks with other musos felt a bit out of place, though one track had Fripp playing lead which was very nice.

Another thing I don't get, but understand its importance. Needs more study.

everything I just typed got deleted :( plus I have a headache and my scoliosis is really hurting my back :( I started to listen to this the other day but realized it wasn't hitting so I decided to paused and come back to it. I'm glad I did that cause I'm vibing with it a little more today. I've probably said numerous times before that I'm not really an instrumental/ambient person. So, while they were cool to hear the fact that they made up a majority of the album probably means I'm just not gonna end up coming back to it often. I really loved "Golden Hours", I really liked "St. Elmo's Fire" and I oddly liked "I'll Come Running". Other than those 3 songs, and maybe "Everything Merges with the Night", I don't see myself listening to this again. It was cool to hear it at least once tho. 3/5

It's fine

Enjoyed this one more than I thought I would. Highlights: "St. Elmo's Fire" and "The Big Ship"

Nice sort of transition from the rocky stuff to the ambient. Simpsons: Yes

Pretty good stuff. I don't love it but it's interesting.

very good

strange; kind of interesting. I didn't dislike it

gave me pink floyd vibes

This Brian Eno record is VERY Brian Eno. Not terrible, just not my thing.

Aika sekalainen soppa kaikenlaista kokeellisempaa musiikkia. Rauhallista ja hyvän maun kokeellista. Paljon taas ambienttia ja elektronisuutta, mutta ei kuitenkaan niin täys ambient kuin se lentokenttä levy. Parhaat: The Big Ship, Becalmed, Zawinul/Lava

Fínt hjá honum Eno. Ekkert samt til að hoppa hæð sína yfir.

I have on occasion listened to Brian Eno’s ambient albums, and absolutely love a number of albums he’s produced for other bands (especially U2 and Talking Heads). He is undoubtably one of the greatest “creatives” alive today when you look over everything he’s done or been involved with. I do find a lot of his own material more “background noise” than outstanding and memorable. This album has a great team of musicians, and is certainly not bad - whilst also not being really good. So it’s a solid 3 from me.

Liked this one probably a little bit more than Warm Jets. Faves: "Sky Saw", "Sombre Reptiles" Least fave: "I'll Come Running" - not a bad song, but one they play at my work often, so not one I want to hear in my spare time.

I appreciate Brian Eno, and love experimental music. But this was just not experimental enough for me. It was good, dont think I will come running back to tie this shoe any time soon.

Previous Eno album hit me totally different compared to this album. Most likely timing is better for this one. I can't say that this would be a great album for me but todays mood somehow supports this listening experience.

Somewhat pleasing album, but I noticed I didn't particularily like Brian's vocals. I would've probably like this album more as an fully instrumental album. It has quite a roster of musician and technicians who worked on it, which was a bit of an surprise to find out after listening.

Every time I listen to Brian Eno, I feel like I just walked into Meow Wolf after tripping acid, which is like tripping without the acid anyway. His music is definitely transient and creates an environment unlike any other musicians with the exception of maybe Radiohead. It’s like he took the Beatles White Album to the next level. In doing so, his music always feels like it shouldn’t happen for another 50 years or so. Futuristic is an understatement. I was surprised how much I liked the song Saint Elmo‘s Fire. The bass/synth work on Over Fire Island was really cool (shout out to Percy Jones). The entire band is legendary: Phil Collins; Robert Fripp of King Crimson; John Cale of VU. Damn! Becalmed was ambient and beautiful. I would have never listen to this album if it wasn’t for the 1001. I am glad for the opportunity….

Random thoughts: * I had a compilation album in the 2000s called "LateNightTales: The Flaming Lips". Basically it was a compilation of some of the Lips favorite artists and music. The track "Another Green World" was on this album and that track subsequently ended up on a mix I made on my iPod called: "Chill & Relax". So I was familiar with that single song. * I just went CD digging to find the "LateNightTales" album. Success! * Side note: LateNightTales was an ongoing compilation series and introduced me to one of my favorite songs called "The Mole" by Chimes and Bells. Go check it out. * Anyway, this album was perfectly fine. I could hear the influence Brian Eno had on Bowie on this. * "I'll Come Running" was one of the more enjoyable and noteworthy tracks. * This line from "Golden Hours" really struck me: "Perhaps my brains are old and scrambled". I guess I'm feeling my age. * I'll probably give this another listen sometime but this didn't make it to classic status for me.

Pretty great for art rock. Almost a 4, but art rock.

better than i thought it would be

A fun, kind weird album. Almost felt a little experimental.

5/10…art pop / ambient

Lush soundscapes, nothing that particularly stuck with me on first listen. Maybe with successive listens more will stick.

Nice background music

This is going to sound very pretentious. I feel like Brian Eno doesn’t make very good songs, however the amalgamation of sounds is always interesting to listen to. Know what I mean?

Solid!

Soft, interesting

I can appreciate it and in general am fascinated by Eno. But I wouldn’t sit around listening to this.

Brian Eno I have a weird relationship with I should like his music more than I do. Certain sections peak my interest and then others not so much. I went on to listen to his latest album after this Liminal and I felt the same

I enjoyed the start of this more than expected. I feel I need to listen to the rest again.

Foundational for all the productions he was going to produce.

It was fine. Liked Songs Added: I'll Come Running

Feel like this is an album that, had it come out in the 2000's or later, with all of the sounds and influences that go along with that, I'd like it a lot more than I do (even though this album would be what influenced my hypothetical record - some real Back to the Future shit there). Not that it sounds dated, it doesn't, just that it's not doing a ton for me. This does feel like a Flaming Lips record before the Flaming Lips existed, so I guess what I'm asking for is this record if it were made by the Flaming Lips in the year 2002. Anyways, it's a solid album. Some interesting stuff going on, like on the song Little Fishes with it's slightly unnerving wobbliness, or the very Flaming Lips-like Sombre Reptiles. I tend to like the synths they have going on this thing. While I wouldn't characterize most of the album as ambient (most of the instrumentals have too much drive IMO to truly be ambient), Becalmed definitely hits that mark amazingly, and is probably my favorite track on the record. Very Outer Wilds. But overall, it's just a tad too odd for me to enjoy fully. Not much on here that I would go out of my way to listen to again, even if I do appreciate it.

I gave this 3 listens. I liked bits here and there, but I just couldn't sink my teeth in. Seems fine. Sonically it sounded fine. Could be tightened up as an album. I'd be willing to try again some day.

An album

I love “St. Elmo’s Fire.” Discovered it during the pandemic and have loved the song since. Album flows like a quiet river.

The album split me. I’ll coming running was #1

With Another Green World, Brian Eno pivots from the glam-rock eccentricities of his Roxy Music days into something far stranger and more forward-looking: a blend of ambient soundscapes, quirky pop, and experimental funk that still feels ahead of its time. The record drifts between eerie, cinematic instrumentals like the suspense-filled “In Dark Trees” and left-field pop gems such as the jaunty, piano-driven “I’ll Come Running,” while opener “Sky Saw” layers a warped funk groove over unsettling textures. It’s not the kind of album that demands repeat listens so much as it dares you to rethink what rock, pop, and electronic music could become.

More proggy stuff. Never heard of this guy but a cool little record. One song totally reminded me of the guy who had a record on this list that sang chicken bones. I liked this. Interesting.

I enjoy both ambient and art rock and am obviously familiar with Brian Eno, so I thought this was a fitting first choice considering I hadn’t yet heard this album of his yet. There’s a lot of sounds here and it goes in many different directions. I was thrown off by the first track, but the album settled in nicely and offered an entertaining journey of rock and ambient sounds intertwined.

This is probably the better of the albums on the list. The vocals by Eno were... okay. The whole Oblique Strategies idea reminds me of Fripp and his aphorisms. I find it an interesting idea, but when bands use it, it sounds kinda pretentious. But that's are for you, I guess. It makes sense, you get blocked and you need to try something new. And sometimes you are at a loss for ideas. So, have the fates decide. It just seems odd to let your art be decided for you so randomly. The band that Eno put together for this album is a prog-lover's wet dream: Fripp, Collins, Percy Jones, John Cale. But if the music isn't anything, all the proggers in the world won't be able to help. I find it interesting how Fripp's laser-like guitar changes the mood of the songs. Any other guitarist would be all "ROCK AND ROLL" and it would just not sound as alien as it does. Listening to the vocals, it's obvious that Eno is not known for his lyrics. ("I'll come running to tie your shoes," indeed). "Little Fishes"... I think of Radiohead's "Weird Fishes/Arpeggi" when I hear it. I'll probably come back to this again. I know a number of publications called it one of the best albums of all time, and I am not sure about that. But it is definitely a 70s album. Top tracks: "St. Elmo's Fire," "Another Green World," "In Dark trees"

I'm assuming this is the last album I get by Brian Eno, as I've got about 5 more albums to rate before I finish this list and there's only one album unrevealed. So, to be clear, I like ambient Brian Eno. Ambient 1/Music for Airports is amazing. Side two (the ambient side) of Before and After Science is awesome (though I also like the poppier side one). Here he's moving toward ambient sounds but he's still in experimental weird. And I feel a bit indifferent. St Elmo's Fire (not ambient) is kind of fun and the guitarwork is pretty slick. Of the other non-ambient songs, Sky Saw is funky but gets to be a bit much and the singing or lyrics in I'll Come Running and Golden Hours kind of ruin it. Of the ambient ones, In Dark Trees was really good (like a horror movie), though my wife hated it - on my second go through she asked incredulously if I was still listening to that music. The Big Ship was ok - started off slow but finished strong. The title track and Sombre Reptiles were also decent. I thought he had two awesome ambient songs toward the end with Becalmed and Zawinul/Lava. Like I said, good but a bit up and down and not all the way to a style of his I like. Closing in on 3.5 but I don't feel like it's a 4 for me.

I feel I had more of a connection with Eno's earlier work, and this ambient music, well it does what it says, and it slips away into the background. I enjoyed this album the first time playing it, but the second spin didn't do much for me, enough to drop it to 3 stars. Strangely, the song about shoelaces became annoying, as it stood out above the crowd and wasn't ambient enough to fit in.

88/1001 :: Brian Eno - Another Green World Heard before? :x: Would I revisit? :x: Rating: 6 Listen before you die: Yes In Brian Eno fashion this album was a little bizarre. Bizarre but also very cool. Production was immaculate and a lot of the songs were interesting/good. You could hear these influences show up in Bowie’s work and beyond. So while it was cool to hear all these things it also felt a little empty at times. So, I’m not sure there was enough for me here to go back.

91/1001 Brian Eno - Another Green World Heard before? ❎ Revisit? ❓ Everything works together in this cold, experimental sounding record, however I would have preferred just to have experienced a soundscape and no lyrics, as this is where I find the most interest. The production on this is excellent as well.

Atmospheric, immersive production, playful bass. Listenable and vibey but not emotionally stimulating Stand out tracks: St Elmo’s Fire, The Big Ship

You can feel Eno starting to shift from glam rock irony to ambient composition in this one, with short tone pieces driven by synths and droning guitars. He’s already playing with the forms he’d later lean into working with Bowie and Talking Heads. That said, it’s definitely a hodge-podge, lacking a real central theme or connection. Sometimes it feels weird for the sake of being weird, as opposed to his later compositions which all connected in their own way. But it’s a worthwhile listen all the same.

I didn't know what to expect, but it was much more accessible than I was thinking it would be.

Pleasant listening.

I appreciate how original this is, but not really my cup of tea.

This was different, but nice

Chilled good I'll come running was the highlight Solid

Good to chill.

não que seja ruim, mas é chato a produção é incrível

Some Bowie, early Pink Floyd, and even some Ween.

The middle phase between ambient eno and warm jets eno. I like warm jets personally, actually I like roxy music eno the most… maybe it’s basic for music nerds but I struggle a bit even here 3/5 generously

Thought it was going to be a bit try-hard artsy but quite liked it. On my patented -100 to 100 rating scale - where 100 is god herself coming down and giving me the best sex ever, respecting me in the morning and doing the dishes on the way out is 90+ (because nothing get 100 in an imperfect world - i mean look at the sheets!) it gets 60

Very interesting just not the kind of interesting I’m a fan of really

Gostei quando estava pra dormir, mas não dá pra ficar ouvindo.

Kind of the same thing happens every time I listen to a Brian Eno album. He's obviously and incredibly talented musician. His music has a lot of brilliant moments, but what's between them ranges from alright to just boring. This album is no exception. The highs are very high, but there are a lot of parts where just nothing happens (and I’m not just talking about the ambient portions). Overall, I still enjoyed this album, but I feel like it had potential to be a lot better if it were a little more dense. 7/10

I'm sure I'm not the first one to call this album boring. Kinda cool I guess, but just wasn't super interested in anything.

Another Eno album…another head scratcher in a good way.

It took some effort to separate this from all of the indie try-hard acts that borrowed from Eno's sound in the early part of the century. Once I could focus on the music for what it was, I quite liked it. Nothing left a lasting impression on me, but I got the sense that it would require multiple listens to truly appreciate the depth of this album. One day I'll need to revisit this more earnestly. Standout tracks: St. Elmo's Fire, The Big Ship, I'll Come Running

I liked it

Brian Emo

I put in a little extra effort on this one. Gave it three listens. Never not liked it, but it mostly ended up as background music. I really like the first track. If I try to put myself back in 1975, I think I can see how this would have been exciting.

songs with vocals were quite good, its very 70s contemporary like futuristic vibes, kinda weird but kinda good at the same time, could do with another listen to cement fav songs

Always wary of anything “experimental” but Brian Eno is a master of sound. I wouldn’t go out of my way to listen to this but I’d be happy to have it as background music while I’m doing something else.

i appreciate brian but he is not for me

7/10 Highlights: In Dark Trees Sky Saw Spirits Drifting

I listened to this album back to back with "Music for airports", and I was pleasantly surprised since I wasn’t familiar with that side of Eno’s works. It’s actually quite interesting, even if I’m not really into that kind of art rock (or is it proto-synthpop ?). Will I ever listen to it again ? Probably not, but I still enjoyed listening it once. Nice effort. 5/10

It's okay, nice background music.

I’m not sure what to do with this one. I loved Art of Noise growing up - I think I’m open to the genre of environmental, experimental, instrumental music. This was a pleasant listen, the songs are interesting in places and boring in others. But it feels largely forgettable. I guess I go middle of the road until I potentially revisit and feel otherwise. 3/5

Shades of pseudo new wave and Pink Floyd

Great start to Eno’s Another Green World, which is a kinda cool mid-70s “new age” album. Starts to fade after The Big Ship. Title cut is short, but ecology was pretty new and near the top of the western world agenda. Best song is Sombre Reptiles (and must be the one they’re talking about that new instrument the snake guitar.) Definitely some innovative ideas and instruments on this album. And he certainly put together a group of well known musicians. My thoughts are that the album would have been even better with no lyrics. Solid (3.2*s)

Modern / synthetic

I like this. I like Eno's ambient stuff a lot more, but there's a prog bent here that is kind of cool. I'll return to Eno's other stuff, but some of this may make its way onto a mix tape. 6/10

First thought when I saw this: "What? Two in a row from this guy? I haven't even listened to the first one! What did I ever do to you?" But really, it wasn't bad. Another 3.

Cool sound scapes and depth. But lacks the hooks to make it a classic.

Not his bet not his worst, very fun listen

Favorite Track: The Big Ship

Not extraordinary, however, it is original and not a bad listen.

Kul lyssning.

I guess the music is revolutionary, I wasn’t alive to witness it. The music doesn’t really stand on its own and it feels like they are being experimental for the sake of it… 3/5

The precursor to Bowie in Berlin, and Talking Heads beginnings, and, I guess, the better part of U2's discography... and it's pretty wild and weird and amazing and dull and everything all at once. I mean it opens with Phil Collins on drums and John Cale absolutely abusing a viola...

yeah that's a brian eno album. weird and interesting. annoying sometimes. and a good *album* experience

Eno got some major talent in the studio with him. He definitely got a bit of a boost from surrounding himself with those guys. Nothing stands out to me here, but I did like Phil Collins on the first track.

A nice ambient album. Beautifully produced, great as background music, but not particularly memorable for me.

A good ambient album overall. I really liked The Big Ship. The other songs were interesting at points, but not as engaging and immersive. I could see myself listening to this at work during focus time. A lawful good 3 for me.

Sometimes I felt like I was listening to the start page of Zelda

Listened a second time with my over the ear headphones and heard a lot more nuance and lovely moments. Some songs I really enjoyed, Like St. Elmo's Fire and Golden Hour. Overall I liked it but found some songs too repetitive and preferred the ones with lyrics. The ones without were varied and interesting, but didn't draw me in as much.

This was an Andrew album through and through, so while I loved watching him love the songs, I thought they were okay.

While I do really enjoy some of Brian Eno's work, this is just okay for me. There are some enjoyable tracks and some which feel more like filler to make the record 40 minutes long.

I like alot of the instrumental tracks but not so keen on the ones with singing

I've never been a big Eno-stan, and always thought he took away more than he added to Bowie and Talking Heads. That says, gave this a few listens and it has its moments - some great sounds on In Dark Trees and the proto-Berlin trilogy Sky Saw and a couple of the vocal tracks had some of the wistfulness of Pink Floyd's elegies for lost summers. Overall though, probably at turns a little overly academic and too twee so perhaps fitting I recognized a song or two from late night BBC2.

I don't much like Prog Rock, but if I did like Prog Rock, I think I'd love this album. When the song had no lyrics, I wanted lyrics. When the song had lyrics, I wanted no lyrics.

I keep wanting to really like Eno, but honestly, I found it a bit of a mixed bag.

Don’t really know how I feel about ambient but Brian Eno is that good of a producer. This album feels like a middle aged man on a journey around the world if that makes. Something I really liked is the guitar solo in “St Elmo’s fire” that resembles electricity. Right now I feel like this album is 3.5 but I think that some songs have the chance to grow up on me

Tenía otra idea de Brian Eno pero este disco es muy bueno.

Chill, experimental, different

I almost willed myself to like this more than I actually do. I get that it’s pioneering and features great musicians and som of the tracks are quite lovely but overall it’s just lacking something for me

This has as much emotional impact as elevator music. 2.5.

This could well grow on me after more listens, but for now...

I preferred the instrumental songs over the ones with vocals. A really interesting album to relax into.

So zen, I would happily have this on while doing things. Nice tracks a few little highlights, really liked the little fishes, very evocative.

The first 2 tracks feature Percy Jones and Phil Collins. If you like these you'd probably like Percy's band Brand X, which also featured Phil in the 70s. The rest of the album is made up of pleasant vinyets and dities. While the approach to song writing may have been experimental, the outcomes are surprisingly conventional. Overall a pleasing listen.

It’s an interesting production but not one that I have fallen in love with like others. My favourite part is the middle of the record which swells with positivity as a more straightforward counterpoint to the esoteric beginning and end. For me it’s a reward / relief when it becomes a pop album, then a bit of a drag when it’s discordant, noodling or meditative. As a fan of his ambient albums I suppose this record sits as a bit of a halfway house between styles that I don’t personally “get”.

Not really my sort of thing but it was ok

Some interesting sounds and arrangements, but the songs all sorta hit the same tone. Eno’s monotonous droning vocals don’t add much to the excitement either.

Certainly not my sound but very artsy
