Reviews (page 6 of 7)

Kind of cool British rock/slightly punk/alternative/slightly country or folky (i think that's how I would genre it?). Pretty just alright. Doesn't really do much for me, kind of questioning it being on the list. I do enjoy when bands blend genres and do different things but this one at the core didn't show me enough for me to enjoy really. The album cover is cool and reminiscent of Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas though which is nice.

Not for me. I can almost handle the poor man’s Pogues but with the shitty 80s drum machine and trippy war chat I’m no fan at all.

Art punk without the swagger

I have a soft spot for this era of British music -- it's cheesy but earnest and doesn't sound whiny the way it all did starting in the 90's. 2.5 stars

Did not fw

Not really my thing overall, but some memorable tracks in between the bland. I didn’t know what to make of this at first. It sounded very country to me in the beginning but then switched to so many different genres I couldn’t keep up. Highlights: Hard to Be Human Again Last Dance

Took a while to decide what I think about this, I can see the appeal but ultimately not for me

Not really my thing

What if post-punk flirted with country? The classic programmed drums and standout basslines that you love from post-punk but with the smooth steel guitar and lonesome fiddle of country: that's Fear and Whiskey. I think it has the potential to be really good but for whatever reason Mekons missed the mark. I think there needs to be more grace, more care taken when melding these elements together. So much of Fear and Whiskey sounds half-baked, haphazard, not full realized. Perhaps with better compositions and songwriting, this post-punk country sound could flourish.

interesting but not in a great way

(For my own future reference: This is the one that sounds like “Irish” bar music but slightly less terrible than usual.) (ntm.)

On paper this is an album for me. In reality; not so much

It was quite bizzare. "Meh" at best

chivalry- 2 trouble down south- 3 hard to be human again- 2 or 3 darkness and doubt- 2 psycho cupid- 3 no more i made a pyramid. anyway, i did not feel like music was playing

Really weird. 2/5

At times it gets to me but very quickly loses my head. Only one song stuck to me, the rest I wasn't a fan of.

Hmmm, pretty boring and non descriptive.

It's like a punk rock album without the punk rock. I could barely stand this and I'm glad it was a short album.

It was alright. A weird mix of genres but worked at points. 2.5

I have to admit it really isn’t my style. If you love 80s alt rock, it’s probably pretty great. I don’t love the style so I’m out

Meh, pari pyöritystä videopelin ohessa ja lähinnä vitutti kuunnella.

Melko joutava

I’d be quite happy to never hear this again. At least has some musical merit so not the lowest rating possible.

Disappointed. Though the alt-rock alt-country-rock vibe works for me, it is the vocal delivery... whether done as a semi-melodic spoken piece or shouty half-melodic track, it does more to take away from the music. Didn't find much to latch onto.

Not very memorable

Not my vibe but inoffensive

A couple catchy tunes amidst an 80’s honky-tonk fever dream.

UK punk meets country - an interesting blend but not quite my cup of tea

Out there! Ok sound, but not my style.

There were elements of this album that I really wanted to like but, ultimately, it just never delivered anything even approximating a satisfying experience.

Not for me.

I’ve forgotten it already

Meh. I appreciate this for paving the way for future alt-country albums, but that’s about the extent of it.

College radio . Pub rock. More Celtic than country really. A poor man’s Pogues? Not much here to come back to.

Singer is awful and melodies are overcrowded

Dirt music. Sounds like shoving dirt into my mouth and swallowing it. Not the biggest fan, but I sort of appreciate what it's doing.

Bloody awful! Nasty voice, lame songs, one of the few albums I couldn't listen all the way through

This is weird. Early 80’s voice, but then a bit of punk, a bit of country. What are you doing.

Just okay, didn’t really care for the talking. 2.5/5

Another unknown British post punk band? But this didn't work for me.. seems like they don't know what they are trying to do

Lidt mærkelig post punk/rock

This sounds like Syd Barrett trying to sound like the 80’s versions of The Beatles and The Rolling Stones if the Beatles had made it that far. More than once while listening to this album I thought to myself “what the fuck?”. I’ve liked some albums that others have not liked. I guess the tables turned on this one. Choice Cut: Hard to be Human Again

Oof. This was not that great at all. Sometimes I question albums that are on this list. This is one such time,

Not quite the Ramones

Idk man. Think kinda sucked, maybe it’s like historically important or the lyrics are strong but the music sounds like kid show theme music and the singer can’t sing.

bizarre but not in a good way

Is it me, or does everyone in this band seem lazy? Starting with the lead vocal, there seems to be no interest in exerting themselves musically or otherwise, and it made for a less-than-inspiring listening experience. Ho-hum.

I liked the first couple of tracks, but I was bored of it by the end.

In the first 15 seconds I asked myself ‘Is this supposed to be country?’ before later learning it’s one of the first examples of alt-country. It sounded messy and disjointed, the country/new-wave crossover was unappealing to me.

Not listened yet

There are some interesting ideas in here, but it really doesn't resonate with me. I'm not a fan of the sound, including the production. I can't see wanting to return to this any time soon.

Enjoyed aspects of it but just missed the mark for me.. a bit too experimental

Interesting experimentation but I can't say I'd want to listen to it again. I like some of the poetry but didn't care for the vocals. None of the songs really stood out. Two-and-a-half to be precise

Not sure what to say. Some songs were nice, some were awful. Some had decent production, some sounded shit. 2.5/5 but I’m rounding down because I’d be ok not hearing ever again

Just a little weird

I don't think I quite got this album. It has the feel that if you had a game show that randomly picked teams of 4 people off the street, gave them quick music lessons and had them create songs with the winners getting a record deal and touring contract, you'd have this album.

It's not the worst thing I have listened to but not far from it

This album started off strong with "Chivalry" and I thought perhaps my preconceived notion that I may not enjoy this album was wrong. The second song had talking in the middle of it, which annoyed me. I think talking disrupts the flow of a song and it is (mostly) a cheap tactic to avoid writing lyrics. I don't even know what Psycho Cupid is. A song, I guess, but it's just odd. I feel like I have been harsh of late and I don't mean to be. I'm convinced the only people who enjoy this album are those who do so ironically or want to be different.

Post punk is a weird genre. On the more underground, low production side of this era there are two types of bands; sloppy production, but has charm and owns the sound and they are actually really good, or experiment in ways that nobody asked for and end up making something really weird, and not in a good way. This album is definitely the latter. It's annoying, and the low production quality has absolutely zero charm to it. It almost sounds like they weren't even self aware that it sounds awful, and they took this album too seriously. The idea is definitely there, but I don't think the violins sound good at all, they just make this album sound even more messy and chaotic than it already is.

Not bad. Not great either.

An interesting choice that was good to listen to Ideologically sound Musically dull An album that hasn’t aged well

I really wanted this to be good. Or I at least really wanted to like it. I'm preconditioned to like any album released in 1985, my favorite year. Sometimes an album can be both things and we call that a win. This was neither, but that it became just a wee bit interesting, enough so that it missed out on a dreaded 1 rating. It's interesting in the way the song "Bonnie & Clyde" from the late '60's is interesting. But again, that doesn't always necessarily mean "good". So I went and listened to the Gin Blossoms. How I made that leap is a question I'll leave for the scholars. But listening to the Gin Blossoms reminded me that the band's three best songs were written by Doug Hopkins, their former guitarist and a self-destructive fella who the band's label forced out of the band. To make matters worse, they then paid him $15,000 to go away and lose out on all publishing royalties. So the dude then kills himself while songs he penned were climbing the charts. Even if you don't enjoy the Gin Blossoms, you can at least admit that story of poor Doug Hopkins is interesting.

Nothing special.

What is happening

I don’t know, seemed weird and indulgent to me

For something described as "one of the first alternative country albums" I was very excited about this. It didn't connect with me, though. The vocals were a bit flat, but not in an enjoyable way. I like the direction it took, but I didn't like the music as much as I wanted to.

Folksy, new wave and Brit punk. Not really my style.

I don’t think this is for me… I feel like I’m listening to dads in a backyard singing over pretty good tracks. Some of the songs are decent but I don’t think I’d listen again.

Tjaaaa .. mein Punk-Herz wird angesprochen ... aaaber ...

Another new album to me so another potential discovery. I enjoyed a few tracks but others not so. The violin backing on some of the tracks was good but the sometimes out of tune singing and instrumentation was at times jarring. I could tell that this was an honest attempt by the group to do something very different and judging it with what was around 40 years ago they succeeded. If I didn’t know it was from the 80’s then I would have never guessed as it is hard to categorise this album by genre or time which is to its credit and probably why it is on this list. I appreciate what it’s trying to achieve but not something I will return to personally.

Most of this record is just noise with fiddle playing that clashes with the other instruments. A couple decent songs but not enough for me to ever come back to this.

langweilig und nervig

Really wanted to like this one after the review said it was the “first alt-country” record. Couldn’t make it through 3 songs.

Heavy on the northern English vibes, lots of violin. Kinda all over the place, not all too pleasant. Would maybe be good at a pub? Gives pub rock vibes.

I can appreciate that they’re doing something unique here, but that doesn’t mean I like it or really understand what’s going on.

Didn’t really get into it. Chivalry was okay.

Flitcraft was fun and reminded me of Dropkick Murphy’s. No idea what was going on in Psycho Cupid. Brain was definitely exercising on that one…

Interesting sound. I don't know who it was for in 1985. Or today for that matter. Very British. Like Depeche Mode trying to do hillbilly impressions.

Forgettable 80s Brit Rock/Post Punk/Something

Some displays of talent intermixed with horrible sounding music

A poor mans The Pogues.

Didn't like it, too bad some songs have great melodies but I really wished they were singed by a better voice.

This is definitely the album that I listened to today.

Alt-country is, in my opinion, a very generous term for this. It's post-punk with some notes of Springsteen-style Americana. A lot of tracks on here remind me of your friend's bad art-rock project. It feels very chaotic, and kind of like it's hinting at something much better, but never really getting super close to it. One song really hits well, and honestly after some deliberation, causes it to escape the 1-star graveyard. But man, it was close. Favorite track: "Last Dance"

Great for what it is, but not for much else. I think if you put a real country artist as the vocalist this would hit a million times harder. Favorites were Hard To Be Human Again and Lost Highway.

Not super

Okay. I get and respect what they were trying to do with this album. But a lot of the time it really felt like I was listening to an amateur band at a bar cover a song that I usually enjoy while I sit back and wait for it to be over. The singing especially wasn't my thing. I don't know, I think the album felt too similar to other mid 80s albums that I DO enjoy, so this one really fell flat to me. It was so close to being something that I would've loved that I got very annoyed instead. Favorites: Psycho Cupid (genuinely good!!), Last Dance. Also wasn't too mad about Darkness and Doubt and Flitcraft. Lost Highway was a bizarre album closer- feels like the sort of song John and Paul would've given Ringo.

I just couldn’t get through this album. It was mediocre.

Very average album, which for me is a mix of post punk and Irish folk songs, but it really sounds just straight up average. I couldn't listen to the whole album, just fast forward a couple times, but I didn't get the atmosphere or the style at all. Just not a record for me.

If I could give half-stars I'd give this 2-1/2 stars. At times this was a 3 for me and at other times a 2. Reading the description that this was a cross between punk and country or an early example of alt-country, had me looking forward to this one. I was hoping for a bit more country leaning as I'm not much of a punk fan but this was an OK listen.

Not my style too emo

La voz no es lo mío, para nada pero la música suena interesante a veces hard to be human again, last dance, lost highway las mejores puf alguna es infumable 2 estrellas

Nice little Irish zang in there but overall didn’t love it 2.5/5

Was isch mit dere huere giige?

Not for me

4/10. This was kind of interesting, and the first song was alright. If it were any longer I'd probably detest it, though

For most of this album I was just wondering wtf I was listening to. Not that it was all bad, exactly, just weird. 4/10

Meh. Bit meh. Fine. Not too good, nothing too bad. Hoped for more

Not amazing, really. Slightly punky country, if that's a thing? Not a huge fan of the sound, and the lyrics aren't as clever as they think they are or need to be for something like this. 2/5.

Oh look another 80s British band.

mehkons.

Kind of a weird punkish album, I don't really understand the sound of it. Not my cup of tea.

Pretentious. 2/5

Get on that horse and fuck off.

Not 4 me

Heard it before?: No Enjoy it?: not my kind of thing Favourite song: didn’t have one

Rough and interesting, but probably too much of a downer for me to come back to

Don't like it

Found this twee and annoying, not a vibe. I was in a bad mood when I listened to this, I'm not sure if that affected anything... but it certainly didn't help either.

A sort of punk-inflected folk. It has its moments. A bit disappointing overall.

Chivalry, Flitcraft, Last Dance. Better than expected. I don’t like country really at all and I dislike most punk but having both combined wasn’t the worst thing ever. Not for me.

the album felt longer than 35 minutes. vocals are booty buttcheeks. there are sections that are almost good. instrumental parts of trouble down south and darkness and doubt

This is an album much like the collective that made it: an interesting idea in theory, not so much in execution. I’ve never been as high on these folks as others, especially in their alt-country phase which has always felt a little bit like inauthentic posturing, and the ramshackle playing doesn’t do much to distinguish them with more effervescent twangy bands of their era.

En aivan ymmärrä mihin tällä levyllä pyrittiin. Outoja välimallin juttuja. 2/5

Avausraita ihan ok, muuten aika tylsä. 2/5

Not for me. 4/10

Like folk punk, not a fan

I really wasn't sure what to make of this even as I was listening to it. The vocals aren't very good, and the music kind of felt like too many things were going on. It didn't sound very good, and I couldn't process what I was listening to a lot of the time. A little annoying, but not bad enough for a 1. My favourite song was Psycho Cupid - Danceband on the Edge of Time.

Only had a quick listen, didn’t grab me so I’ve decided to carry on and live my life.

it seems like a joke, it’s not punk and it’s not country and there are no tunes

Weird. Didn't really dig it.

A pretty odd and obscure album. Not quite sure why so many albums are in this list and this is definitely one of them. The 80s sound of blah fits here but it’s the random instrumentals that make this so rough to listen to. Not sure if I ever even want to revisit this. There’s just no point to. There are significantly better albums yet this isn’t the worst in this list. 4.1/10

Wat een week hè jongens

A few good tracks but not my sound.

Meh. Really didn't enjoy and really only liked Last Dance. Country? 80s Pop? From a former punk band nonetheless? Again, meh. 2/5

The Mekons' fourth album. They are from England. Genre: Alternative rock, alternative country First listen. Notable Songs: Hard to Be Human Again 2.5

I listened to this about 12 hours ago and I couldn't tell you a single thing about it. I think it was okay?

Not bad, but nothing special. I suppose the addition of fiddles and the like to a punk sound is slightly innovative, but that doesn't really make it more enjoyable to listen to. I wound up stopping half way through the next to last song -- I got the drift by then, and there's better things I'd like to listen to. 2.5 stars, and I'm rounding down.

I had hopes as the album started that it would be something that I would like, despite the country and punk influences, due to the era and some snippets I heard before, but this album just gets progressively worse as it goes on. The fiddle isn't the issue, it's the barrage of sound this album presents with no real weight behind of it. It gives it a "band playing at a music festival you don't wanna be at" vibe, that is only saved because it never is offensively bad save for the one or two times it absolutely zapped my motivation in the moment. I do think my sister will think this album is amazing, as she loves everything going on here, so thanks for that Mekons, someone is getting something out of this, it just isn't me.

Konstigt… njutbart bitvis, men nää

This is really interesting and the mix of punk and country occasionally threatens to explode into greatness However, the vocals are in that awful, affected nasal whine that was so prevalent in the 80’s and that’s hard to get past This could have been great… but really isn’t

"Alternative country" 💀

go violon désaccordé ça leur évitera (d'avoir une audience)

Interesting to read about this album's influence as a punk and country combination. I didn't really catch the country genre while I was listening, but I guess there's some fiddle/violin mixed in. The music itself was not to my taste.

I like old school country, and I certainly don’t dislike punk and its derivatives, but, this album fell flat for me. I’m reaching for the Pogues, the Cure, or most anything else before this. I can imagine a later stage in my life where I wonder how I ever gave this album such short shrift. But for now, it remains worse than neutral

i’m not against the concept of alternative rock country, but this just falls flat.

Annoyed me at points

This took me so long to get through even though it was a short album it just was not enjoyable.

It was probably good if you're into that kind of thing.

I like the artwork, all faded and washed out, much like the album.

It started out really good with Chivalry, and I was excited for the album. But then it got pretty bland, with some occasional pretty bad stuff, such as Darkness and Doubt with the out of tune violin (especially ending was outright bad imo), and it just didn't really recover to the level of the start of the album. Still, it could have been worse for sure, but didn't hit home for me, and will probably forget about this album fairly soon.

Helaas, dit ging langs me heen

Hard to Be Human Again seemed the most familiar right out of the box with a pleasing melody and solid vocals. I definitely liked all of the dialogues that were mixed into the music, particularly on Psycho Cupid as I particularly enjoyed the face forward female sounds and the subdued but wild accompanying music. Abernant didn't work for me at all as I wasn't able to bridge the discordant sounds across the vocals. I wondered if there was a connection to David Lynch's Lost Highway or if that was (probably) just a coincidence. Interesting and weird one overall that I won't likely be reaching for any time soon-- I don't think.

What is this particular British vocal style called? So I can put a name to my hatred. Is it just called "the Morrissey?" The Mekons were punk before this album? I feel so bad for all of their fans in 1985 getting excited for a new punk album and dropping the needle onto this turd cake instead. However, taking the time to seek out some of the previous stuff, it was pretty weird. So who knows. But the lead singer didn't sing like that before this album. There were a few tolerable songs on the back half. "Abernant" and "Last Dance," I think. It finally started to feel like some the alt country influence around those parts, particularly the violins on "Last Dance."

Guy’s voice sucks.

I could repast all the zs from yesterdays Everything But The Girl review. In contrast, this album is more interesting and also more offensive to my ears.

This was an odd mix of songs

I'd rather listen to New Model Army.

definitley punk, not really memorable but reminds me of art rock, or velvet underground.

This was definitely not my thing. Of course it sounds very 80s, but besides that I just found it weird and off-putting. Some instrumentals were sort of interesting but I didn't like most of it. It was bearable, I guess. Fave track(s): Darkness and Doubt

Ok... sure... this feels like the band had some kind of emotional breakdown and then recorded this album. Oh boy.

It sometimes gets above pub rock, but not frequently enough

Je n'ai pas été très impressionnée... Mon chum a dit: «On dirait des punks, mais pas fâchés.» Je pense que ça résume bien l'ensemble. Rien ne nous retenait dans cet album.

Jesus Christ those were the longest 35 minutes in my life. I don’t know man, it seems these were some tripping cowboys. I think a one would be too harsh, so I’ll give it s 2/5, since it isn’t a catastrophe, but it isn’t good.

The music was interesting but I just couldn't get past the singer. Some interesting prog / punk reminiscent of the pixies and the cardiacs.

Seemingly experimental, the featured fiddle, drawled dialog in place of singing, there is a sense of country and a tinge of Pink Floyd. However, this is bad country and a bad Pink Floyd. Notable exception is the song "Flitcraft" where the country and folk element just seems to work to where it might even work as a bar anthem. Beyond that, though, the album is without significant impact as it just sort of plays with a sense of crisis of identity till about halfway through when it blatantly tries to be a country album by a band that has an idea of it, but struggles with its execution. If there has been a question of what 'trying' sounds like, this is Exhibit A.

notes - alt country / punk album - never heard of this band before - in theory this should be up my alley, i like punk and i like country influences - it just didnt come together for me - the fiddle was annoying - the songs werent compelling enough to ignore it - the first couple songs were really rough, got a bit better after that fav - hard to be human again - where all the elements came together in a way that made sense least fav - darkness and doubt - intentionally wonky but it goes on way too long 2/5 interesting in theory but annoying in execution

s'alright

Meh... felt like a chore to listen to.

Simplistic; didn't touch me.

★★★★☆ for psycho cupid - danceband on the edge of time but overall i wasn't into this

Not that I don't think this album isn't good by a technical standpoint or in the eyes of other people, but this album has everything that I am just not interested in. The half-present instruments and clunky rhythm makes it impossible for me to get into the music. Relieved when the last song ended honestly. Could have been worse, though so. 2/5

It takes until the final track for all the wayward ideas in this LP to coalesce into something listenable, and even then the final product leaves quite a lot to be desired. Adding a bunch of funky instruments (including some of the worst-recorded violin I've ever heard) and spoken word segments does not make your generic rock sound any better.

Weird. Not in a good way. 2/5

This album is kind of funny, the country elements tinge it all over a lot heavier than I was expecting. I wasn't expecting it to feel so disjointed, but maybe that's what you get from one of the first to do it. I definitely consider the influence of traditional folk music to be a lot more present than country music, particularly considering what side of the Atlantic The Mekons hail from. Enjoyable enough.

It was okay, doubt I'll listen to it again

DIdn't find this too compelling - listening as background music and nothing made me stop and want to pay attention.

Started promising but it was not for me

Irish folk post punk?,

At the intersection of ‘80’s hair metal, country and punk lies this album.

Nope, not for me thanks. Bad. My dad would like this.

ooof 80s shouty trash no thank u sir

Interesting mix of genres but ultimately not for me.

Kinda folksy Indi stuff. Not awful sounding but not my vibe. 2.5

Another 90’s British punk group that sounds like a 90’s British punk group

Shannah missed most but didn't particularly enjoy what she heard. (1.5/5) Jane thought it was very 80s and a bit schizophrenic. (A generous 2/5) Bill commends them for writing a bunch of songs that weren't just love songs. (2/5) Few songs that Conor'd come back to. (2.5/5) 2/5

Pretty boring.

Folky punk is kinda ehhh to my tastes, but this wasn’t tooo bad. I won’t be actively tracking more down from Mekons, but I won’t shy away from it either. 2.5

I had higher hopes for this. It passed me by a bit as punky irish music only slightly more modern than The Pogues.

Wow. Nobody gives a shit about this record. The first track has 161,000 plays on Spotify, but the others have less than half as many. Another critically-acclaimed UK post-punk record on this list. It's a genre I'm inclined to like. But what sets this one apart from the rest? After listening, I'm not sure I know. They are a tight band, and they are less metronomic than other bands from this moment. The drum machines weren't taking over. That's good I guess.

I was excited about this one. I mean “Fear and Whiskey” is basically my personal mantra. Alas, while it was definitely interesting, I wasn’t a huge fan. Sorry.

Ehhh Never got into this band. Don't think this sound every worked well.

Ik voel de potentie maar dit album is echt veel te vaag. Ik kan me niet voorstellen dat dit serieus bedoeld is geweest geworden. **

“Meh”kons Good title

Some nice ideas, the Mekons are really an idea band - as in I like the idea of the Mekons more than I like their music. Was it really the first alt-country album? Anyway, not much distinguished music.

I liked the idea but poor execution

Off pitch is not a good attribute, no.

Obviously English style singing which is good, just a little too punky with the out of tune singing. I only really liked the first song. Nice idea to do a punk/country crossover (early alt-country?).

The production is pretty good. I hate the vocals. Honestly think I'd enjoy this more as an instrumental album.

So British. This not doing anything for me aside from a guitar solo or two at the end of the album.

2.4 - album felt included more for its noteworthiness than its quality. Appreciated the eclectic and nature, could hear a lot of influence for The Pogues, Dropkick Murphy’s and a bit of Blur throughout.

Reminds me of the Pogues and Dexy’s. I’m bewildered by two comments that say that they sound like the Talking Heads though, huh?? I just can’t relate to country or punk so this is not my jam.

Puha en omgang. Totalt stressende at høre på, med et vivar af instrumenter og lyde. Nej tak

Interchangeable with any other folk/rock nonsense.

Not great, kinda like flogging molly and the clash mixed together.

Not the biggest fan of country music but it wasn't a bad listen. The first half was better than the second though, with great songs like Chivalry and Hard to be Human which were stronger compared to the more country songs after.

Decent instrumentals. Terrible lyrics and vocals.

Is it punk? Is it country? It surely isn't good.

Eh. I know why this is here but I just didn’t find it memorable.

Boring. 2 starz.

80s speaky-pop, but not that catchy

Overrated?

Perhaps a groundbreaking band, but not a groundbreaking album. Good enough not to be bad.

Not crazy about this one. 2

Didn’t enjoy it and didn’t even notice when it had finished.

Alt-country/post punk. Occasionally weird, occasionally good. BT: Chivalry, Hard To Be Human Again, Last Dance

horrible

Had to source this elsewhere as for some reason Spotify didn't have any songs to play from it. I didn't enjoy the vocals, the songs on the whole didn't interest me either but some of them were okay.

A little bit country. A lot punk. Didn't grab me.

Fine. Middle of the road. Nothing to rave about.

i was not ready for this.

Don‘t like his voice. Rather boring.

meh. rockabilly is not my thing

Interesting mixture of country, rock and psychadelic effects, but i hate country

Well it has the decency to be short anyway

cows have awful taste

More garbage. Come on 1

An interesting introduction but I don't like the vocals and the fiddle. favourite: "Last Dance" 1,5

No se porque la voz me suena al grupo Indochine. Igual no me gustó el album

This is either intentionally awful or I'm missing something

This sucks.

Not my cup of tea, bit off tune and not catchy

Based on the album title, I was ready for perhaps some southern rock or gritty country. Then I got hit in the face with what sounds kinda like new wave with alternating falsetto singing and off-tempo speaking backed by a drum machine on track 1. Ruh-roh. Then there were a few tracks of unintelligible talking over some noise. Cool. The autoplay when this finished was a song from the Pere Ubu album that I also hated, so that felt like a sign that I'm justified in giving this a 1. This is actively bad music. I really wish I liked this--the log line of "punk + country" sounds like something that should be right up my alley, but honestly I think this is really poorly executed. 1.4

This album probably goes hard if you live in a pub

REALLY annoying

This was just consistently terrible all the way through

Not for me

to chaotic

Yeah, no. This album does not work for me at all. Just all around bad, the music doesn’t really work, the vocals are terrible. 1/5

Wow. Just wow. Such a terrible start. And it gets worse.

Jesus, what a painful listen. The punk is not punking, the country is not good and the vocalist is a disaster to sing in any genre he chooses from. . This is another band and album that I wonder why it's here: never heard about this band and the sound it's just awful. . This list ignores so many good albuns and then saya this is a must listen album. What a joke! 1/5

I don't quite know why but it makes me want to run away from the sound of it. And the more of it i heard, the more I disliked it.

Not really sure what that was. The fact that all 10 songs are so annoying is almost impressive. Vocals were awful. Not one redeeming feature to be found.

Was this supposed to be a joke?

Ahh that kind of music again, that tries so hard to be annoying, meaningless and badly crafted. I don't see one single benefit for my life in this crap.

I mean what even is this? Was hyped thinking I was going to get a country album and then the Brits ruined it…

jus finished and I don’t remember anything. It’s noise

This is by far the worst album I've heard on this list so far. Read the reception it got on Wikipedia and can't believe it was so well regarded. I can get the themes are dark and interesting but the music is awful. Horrible screeching violins over some horrendous vocals. Couldn't listen to it again if you paid me and I only managed to get 4 songs in!

Prenez la country dans ce qu'elle a de pire, mettez là avec ce genre affreux qu'est le post-punk, et vous obtenez une merde infâme.

well. that's 35 minutes i cannot get back 1/5

I don’t drink enough to make this sound good. 1/5

Not for me.

Incoherent

Grating in too many facets

This is going to be a short review for me. Not my style. Really hard for me to get through with the singing though I hate to complain about that kind of thing. This reminds me of a really drunk bar band singing their hearts out, which is much better in person and also really, really drunk. It doesn't make a good album for me. And I love the fiddle and vibe with some country! Song added to playlist: Flitcraft. This was the most listenable to me out of the bunch and one that was mostly in tune.

Terrible album

Idk why but all of this was just slightly off-putting? I think this was just bad.

No idea why this is on the list, annoying vocals and badly written songs. Not surprising I had never heard of them before this

so much potential; yet so much disappointment

Why is this on here

I don't like it, some sounds are just noice

This was just a mess. Stated off somewhat interesting but by the time it got to the second track I was just too annoyed with it and it didn’t get much better from there.

Not sure what I’m listening to, punk, alternative???? Don’t mind the female singer, the male singer, all songs sound the same.

the thing about this is that i actually like a fiddle in the right context. i kind of expected this to be completely unlistenable because of how bad the production is and how bad of a concept this album is ("punk rock country" jfc), but somehow the instrumentation isn't the problem. it's almost good at points even for strangled everything sounds, except for one tiny glaring issue: the vocals. i'm convinced they just recorded the audio from whichever piss drunk blokes they found at their local pub that were bellowing nonsense. genuinely headache inducing. incredible work.

Track 1 was ok, very listenable, and I thought I might enjoy this album. Then the dross started, which quickly morphed into unlistenable shite, so much so that I had to turn it off during track 5.

Atonal. Couldn't get into a single song, even the one mostly with talking. Folk at times was nice but then they'd go and ruin it.

I tried - but couldn't make it through.

honest to god one of the worst albums ive heard

👎🏻

Oof. I am not close to the punk (and what immediately followed) vibe, I am learning

I tried to have an open mind but bad music unfortunately shuts my mind right up.

No. It's terrible, untalented rock, punk music. Waste of my time 1/5 —————————————— No liked songs

I might sound pretentious, but the opening track, Chivalry, was a bad first impression. It sounds like the singer is fighting with the instruments to see who gets to dictate the beat. Trouble Down South was better, but Hard To Be Human Again makes it hard to be interested again. Darkness And Doubt and other tracks like Country have some of the most obnoxious violin playing I've ever heard, which has to be intentional, but after the previous tracks I wasn't in the mood to appreciate that. On a side note, the screams in Flitcraft reminded me of the YouTube video of that one goat (or sheep?) screaming, which almost made me chuckle. I've seen many cases where the vocalists' shortcomings add to the music, but this is not one of them for me. And add to that this irritating violin playing. I'm not necessarily a hater of country music, but I despised the country influence in this particular instance. I think the album is listenable, but I didn't enjoy it. I hate to be right now one of those people who say certain music is bad; so I don't know, maybe I'm missing something. This is labeled as post-punk in the generator, so it's upsetting to give a low score to an album of the genre that has been my favourite so far in this journey.

Every time I draw an album that I've never heard of from an artist I've never heard of, I want to like it so bad. The name was cool, the cover art is interesting... But the album falls so short. It feels like it's almost close to being good, but it really isn't. Everything is about 50% wrong. The vocal melodies are unintelligible, the guitar parts don't compliment each other very well, the drum samples are distracting, the violin is just kinda there, the mix is okay at best, and the arrangements on their own aren't conducive to high quality music. The best thing about this record is the idea of it. It seems like it would have been something I'd really enjoy if any of it was done well. It doesn't even conclude with something that feels like an end. I feel like the car just ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere. Also the drummer literally counts only himself in on one of these songs? Usually I can at least find a couple things redeeming about an album I don't like, but it isn't even performed super well. The guitar is regularly out of tune. The vocal performance is... unfortunate. The instrumental sections often aren't very good on their own either. Maybe I can say that the lyrics aren't too cheesy. But man... it's just a bad record. At least it's only 35 minutes. The worst part is that I think it's all done on purpose. Maybe I just don't get it, but I don't think I want to. 1.1/5

Man what the hell was this

ts sucks 🥀

This is what I imagine when your uncle says he was in a rock band back in high school.

This did not hit for me
