Reviews (page 3 of 7)
This was pretty decent. Liked the soulfulness of some of the tracks, fitting that the word 'soul' is in the title!
This was a pretty awesome hip-hop album. Great flow to it, fun beats.
Enjoyed this a lot more than I was expecting
2.5
This is definitely one of the cases where I'm not one of the best people to be rating this one. I think it's pretty good. I like where he's blending several styles of hip hop, rap, soul, and R&B were running around at the time. All in all, none of the genres are what I would call in my general wheelhouse especially in 2004. Some of the slides in the 70s soul I did like, but I think it's real strength is when he blends pop into his sound such as he did with "Crazy" and "Fuck You", which really isn't represented on this Lp. I guess overall enjoyable listen but nothing I'd return to immediately. (7.33) ★★★½
I thought this was pretty good. It's an interesting mix of hip-hop and R&B, and mostly like a less weird Andre 3000. As is often the case with hip-hop albums in this era, there's a bunch of producers on the album, and hip-hop being largely a producer's medium, the quality is a little uneven. The Neptunes and Timbaland stuff hovers above the rest. "I'll Be Around" is pretty easily the song to beat here. 3.5 stars.
7/10
Enjoyed it more than I thought I would. But is it really that notable? Two singles which didn't crack the top 40 and Wikipedia's "legacy" section merely mentions its inclusion in this list. Weird.
This record would be tighter without the rap-required crappy skits and the pop filler that's clearly radio material. It's not bad, but the sub-par stuff drags down the enjoyable material.
This album has an odd mix of both good and bad. As well as some great production and features that kinda steal the show. Cee Lo's voice is pretty solid for the most part, but there's some tracks where he gets a little nutty with it that just take me out a bit. You can only take so many songs about how great he says he is. Also fuck Cee Lo Green.
Me gustó
Semi-enjoyable
This is pretty fun but one of the stranger additions to this list imho. Sometimes this list feels like one critic's stock portfolio & Green was trading at $2.04 a share so he scooped him but now it trades at $1.05 a share.
I quite like Cee Lo Green's voice, I like his range, I quite like the variety to the album and the soulful vibes in much of it. I generally like hip hop and appreciate Outkast and Killer Mike and Southern style rap a bit. But this just isn't enough of an album to really impress for me. It doesn't wow and make me impressed. His Gnarls Barkley work is excellent, but they may be down largely to Danger Mouse on production.
Alright
Very pretentious but I’m all for it! Opening with The Art of Noise is very cool. Quite some duds but overall the all over the place vibe works for me
Middle of the road
Funky, but too long
generally enjoyable, not so interesting that it withstood the runtime and maintained my attention throughout but i do think i could have been sucked into this guy's artistry at the time.
Never listened to a full Cee-Lo project before...I'm not mad at it, but there is only so much of his voice that I can take lmaooooo
There's nothing stellar or interesting about this album. It has a singular vibe throughout and nothing I would consider worth an entry on this list.
Some catchy tunes, but Cee-lo has a voice for novelty songs, not an entire album.
pretty good
To make the most obvious joke possible, Cee-Lo Green is not The Soul Machine, no matter how many times he says he is over the course of this album.
Really into it but was glad when it was over. Drop a few songs and you’d have a much tighter and enjoyable album.
Cee-Lo Green is a strange man. He can make some genuinely good music, but often when working with other people. It seems mr Green misses a certain something to make the best of his excellent qualities. This record is a good example. The best songs are the ones where he has either Pharell or Timbaland as a feature (both great producers), the rest are however very meh. Not bad, it's kinda soulful, but nothing to speak home about. A far cry from the highs Cee Lo can reach in for example Gnarls Barkley.
Can't say it is my type of music, but it was still very fun to listen to. Something about the personality of Cee-Lo just infects his music and makes you smile.
*Unique hip hop album for its time
Certe basi non sono male. Ma non c'è niente di eccezionale.
Has that 2000s nostalgic hip-hop sound. Favorite track: I'll be around other picks: art of noise, living again, childz play, let's stay together
Can't say I expected to see this one on here. When this first debuted, I thought it was okay and was kind of fun, and that still rings true today. It has a funky swing and good energy, and it's enjoyable. Not something I'd regularly revisit though.
Most recent entry so far! I'm only familiar with Cee-Lo's hits and some of the Gnarls Barkley songs. I like the funky vibe, but wondering if this album needs to be as long as it is! I recognize I'll Be Around. I didn't realize this was Cee-Lo. A great Timbaland beat! I never realized Cee-Lo had an album that was held in enough esteem to be included in a list like this, nor that it would be this one without a real recognizable hit, but I'm not mad about it. I'm enjoying this.
Meh. Some tracks were cool, but it's not my style. Just learned that he did Crazy with Gnales Barkley, though. Kinda cool.
He's got some soul but not a huge fan of Cee-Lo. I so like how he was part of gnarls barkley then became a solo artist.
Having really only heard one song by him, this was an interesting mix of styles.
I was ready to hate this, primarily I suppose because Green seems like a jerk. But it wasn't too bad, TBH; I generally liked the production. Green may still be a jerk, but on the basis of the music, this is a three.
Liked it more than I thought I would overall
I was expecting something so much worse than this, but this was quite listenable and even at times enjoyable.
Clearly a talented and unique dude but man. This guy is… a lot
Thought this was quite enjoyable. Cut 4-5 songs from the back half and I could be rounding up. I think the bad reviews on this one are from "Crazy" PTSD. His voice can be a little much at times but the beats were pretty solid. 3.25/5
cee lo green is the sould machine. going into this album i was very hyped i had high expectations as its hip hop and i love hip hop but it kinda dissapointed me it had good beats the flow is fine but his is voice and the rapping is kinda ahh in all due respect i wouldnt really listen to this hip hop the beats are nice but overall wasnt as good as the ones before even though it wasnt my type of music overall rating 3/5
Cee lo green is the soul machine: This record has some nice beats and flows but overall it falls flat in lots of aspects. It's overall boring and doesn't have too much meaning or themes to it. Most songs are just flow and beats. Many filler songs and way too long. 3/5
CeeLo is such a good producer. The Album is all over the place tho
Love the beats on this
Its oke
Like most people, I was introduced to Cee-Lo Green by Crazy. That song seems to tower over the rest of his career, it's all fine but he never really got anywhere near there again. Here he's producing a better than average album. Doesn't feel particularly innovative or interesting, but not bad. Hard to see how this deserves its spot on the list; there are lots of better albums in all the genres this crosses
I like the backing tracks, but his voice and lyrics just grate on me. The groovy big band feel is fun tho! 2.5
p fun
Beats are fine, CeeLo's voice is kind of grating, the album is genuinely nothing special, no idea why it's here.
had a gosh darn tootin good time
Ok
Idk why this is part of this list
Honestly didn’t finish it, but there were a couple good songs on this. Cee-Lo rapping is not it, though.
Estaría 10/10 si durara menos, lo de en medio está medio tedioso pero en general chidito
Decent listen but think he has better albums!
Oooooh i know "I'll be around" I like this album, not much to say. I liked Cee Lo Green before
three out of five
I like him as a feature artist.
Meh correct. Beau mélange de soul et de hip hop. Je connais mieux son album d’après.
Its a bit too long but the beats are great. If the list needed to have Cee Lo it should have been Goodie Mob or Gnarles Barkley over a solo album.
I'm a huge fan of Cee-Lo's second album, Perfect Imperfections, so I was happy this one popped up. It's okay, but didn't catch me like that one did.
The only bit i remember is the Musical youth riff in one of the song. Nice tunes but I'm not going in for another listen any time soon
wowww every beat on this album is so new and different from every other song on the album however al the songs are harminous and play together so well, fuck celloo and his fat self not saying his name correctly on purpose
this was a good album, favorite song was I’ll Be Around
I see, so this is who taught ERBoH guys to rap It has quite a few duds, but it has some pretty good songs too. Averages out I like his rapping
A bit of a mixed bag here. 'The Art Of Noise' intro sounds like a less sophisticated version of 'Rock Your Body' with Justin Timberlake. 'The One' sounds like a generic early 2000s hip-hop song. 'I Am Selling Soul' is a Shaft-like 70s disco song. What I'm saying is it was hard to get a grip on this album being all over the place thematically. I wasn't particularly fond of CeeLo's rap either. It was nasal and felt.. uncool somehow. Maybe the cover art of the album added to the uncool image. There were some stray songs here and there that were decent. 'All Day Love Affair' comes to mind. But overall I'm not sure why this is something I need to hear. It doesn't feel focused enough, which makes it hard for me to remember what a typical CeeLo album sounds like. Weak 3.
Not bad. Mix of old school hip hop with some poppier sound.
you could've give me 50 attempts to guess what this would sound like ( OR even describe post-listen) and I could not even approach the reality- other than EXTREMELY 2000s. Some catchy stuff though
"Cee-Lo Green...Is the Soul Machine" is the second studio album by American singer, songwriter, rapper, record producer and actor CeeLo Green. Neo soul and hip hop are the Wiki-listed genres. The album was produced by Green, Traxx, the Neptunes, Timbaland, Jazze Pha, Organized Noize, Charles Pettaway, DJ Premier and Locksmif. Commercially, the album reached #13 on the US Billboard 200. The album opens with a guy talking to a kid declaring he's the king of soul machine. This leads to the song "Soul Machine." Women repeating "What? What?" A handclap beat. Horn fills. People talking in the background (that's throughout a lot of this album). CeeLo comes in rapping in a high voice stating that he's here to deliver the soul. Timbaland produced the first single "I'll Be Around." Horn-synth pulses and a Latin-esque beat. CeeLo rapping. There's a chorus. Timbaland with a deep voice. CeeLo will always be there for you. The second-single "The One" has a chorus repeating "You're the one girl." A swirling, catchy and melodic synth riff. There's also a sample of Earth, Wind and Fire's "Devotion." "Let's Stay Together" slows down the beat. A soulful groove and melody with the synth/organ. A song that features Pharrell Williams who also produced it as the Neptunes with Chad Hugo. The music on this album has mostly a soulful melody with a hip hop or handclap beat. There's also songs with Latin and dance beats. CeeLo raps, sings and talks. There's lots of production especially with the background and chorus vocals and the party-like atmosphere with people talking in the background. I think the multiple producers and guest singers really helped keep the variety between the songs and limit any perceived overproduction. Overall, this is a decent album. What are the chances I'd get two neo soul albums back to back. Well, I guess 100% now.
Actually really enjoyed this! I was thinking it'd be two start at best going in but I was proven wrong. A great vibe and real Outkast big boi vibes throughout, which I love
Well, this album is pretty much what was kind of popular at around the time when it came out, but I feel like it's a bit meh nowadays. Overall, it's decent having it in the background while I was doing stuff.
The man has a point
The soul machine lives up to his billing. Thanks to Pharrell and other guests, I had a bopping good time on the best tracks but this could have used lots of cuts to make it tighter. Top tracks: "Let's Stay Together," "The Art of Noise," "Childz Play"
--Soul Machine...groovy --The Art of Noise...I go in and out between liking and disliking his voice. it's certainly versatile --Living Again...cool piano here. this is fun --I'll Be Around...fun but forgettable --The One...head bopper --My Kind of People...some nice horn usage here --Childz Play...another solid beat. lots of cool things happening here --I Am Selling Soul...an odd diversion --All Day Love Affair...nice and mellow. blockbuster video reference --Evening News...didn't like it at the beginning but "The Return From Ashes" sample won me over --Scrap Metal...he keeps trying to throw out new and interesting ideas but this LP is already feeling long and we still got a while to go --Glockappella...I don't buy the gangsta attitude --When We Were Friends...nice production but real cheesy --Sometimes...I like the flute sample --Let's Stay Together...not bad but could be easily edited out from an already bloated album --Die Trying...ends on a high note
Cee-Lo Green seems like a nice guy with a very healthy ego (which isn't quite justified based on the music he's made here.)
The album was Ok. It was fun, but I didn't really engage with it. Listening to this I can see where Gnarls Barkley comes from, I think I prefer Gnarls Barkley
Not sure why there’s so much hate here, this wasn’t bad! Very 2004 album cover though
Average rap
聞き苦しくないまあまあのヒップホップアルバム。しかし今後はこのリスト経由でしか聞かれないと思う。
Another album that I can only describe as mediocre, unfortunately.
Звучание кайфовое, но к голосу очень сложно привыкнуть, не мое... Фиты прикольные, медлячки ничего, читает норм, поет норм, но этот противный голос...
Baš se vidi Pazina vremena
Not my usual sort of thing, but fun and catchy.
It was fine but nothing stood out
Quite good! "Soul Machine" and "The Art of Noise" were definitely a surprise!
Drar (og sikkert tar) noen linjer han her. Flyter bra
This album was fine? A bit all over the place. I find Ceelo to be really gross as a person, which I think influenced me to not like some of the explicit lyrics.
Huh…I didn’t know he rapped.
This is fun - better when he's singing than rapping. Could do with an edit, but the production is great
This is a solid album, produced very well and with a singer that has some talent - but maybe not as much as he himself wished he had. Some tracks work great, others don't, and the obligatory spoken word track feels like the same empowerment black music stuff you heard a million of times.
Little T-rex arms sure can dance
bello eh ma troppo lungo
Even the wiki article simply says "this album sure does exist alright". Essential, my left foot. This is plain as shit.
This was fine. I guess. I've heard worse.
At times, this album was pretty good. Mostly, though, it was just the same thing over and over. I don't think there's anything special here.
Thumbs up for Art of Noise, meh for almost everything else
CRAZY albumvalg for den her kunstner!!
I don't know if Cee-Lo Green is the Soul Machine, but this album kept me interested. Maybe a 3.5?
this was way more fun than i expected it to be ngl
Ich hab’s ganz gern gehört. Produzentenliste über krass.
Down the middle
A good album, I liked The One the most.
I only know Forget You and Crazy. This was okay, but I think I’ll stick with those two songs by Cee Lo.
This was surprisingly pretty enjoyable! 3.5
Bit on the long side. Don’t know enough about the genre to know if it’s any good, but it was listenable to at least
Beginning was a little underwhelming. A lot collaborations which made the expectations high, but it felt too hip-hop/raplike. Second half of the album was a lot better, more interesting, more soul.
Favorite Track: I’ll Be Around
Was a nice mix of singing and rapping. Lyrics were OK.
It was OK. No standouts.
62/1001 First listen. This was enjoyable enough. I actually might play this again sometime. Just barely three stars. 5/10
Enjoyed this - sort of soul, sort of rap. Plenty to enjoy
Not necessarily something I would crave, but certainly good party background music
The tracks didn't really stand out to me in particular but overall it's a good-sounding and varied R&B exploration of its time
Fun upbeat album
3.5. Enjoyed and then really enjoyed the music that came after that from Spotify. It’s always interesting to see which music gets spawned by an album.
I thought it was going to be a two. However, a few songs are really good and bumped it up to three. Unfortunately, the lyrics we’re not appropriate for the girls so there’s no information as to whether they liked it or not.
Nice to listen to it Once but that’s it for me. Some songs are really strong like Childz Play. But some are also super cheesy and have nothing to do with soul music.
Not that bad
Difficult time rating this one as a lot of it feels like it's trying to be a bit in the 2000s and feels quite aged because of it. Still enjoyable though with quite some decent songs
Better than the reviews suggest, but definitely had some low points
Better than I expected. I don't like his voice very much. Songs and production are good. Enough variation. Favorite song: childz play
This wasn't bad, but it's by far the best thing even Cee-Lo Green has been involved with. Gnarls Barkley is better. Goodie Mob was better. Even other solo ventures seemed more interesting. He's a weird, crazy, interesting man (for better or worse), and I didn't really get any of that from this album.
Some highlights here and there, but mostly not my thing.
Some great, and some not so great
ok
His falsetto grates on me but the beats and melodies are good
2.5 Didn't like the album at first sounded like standard Knarls Barkley Cee-Lo stuff. The 2nd half of the album was more personal and I enjoyed more.
There's a great record in here somewhere... 10-11 too many tracks.
Some very good some very annoying I’m so conflicted
3 sterne
This started out pretty enjoyable, listening whilst walking the dogs in the sun, but boy does it go on. It's about 20 minutes too long.
Weak second half but still a pretty fun album
Really strong start, but it... is kinda long. Sorry CeeLo
Looong, but some good stuff in it
Älskar ju Cee-Los röst. Av nån anledning. Men den är skön som fan. Ett par grymma låtar men också en del halvannan. Tror det blir en trea ändå, var uppe å nosa på fyra. Men nja känner jag nu.
Worth a listen
At first I thought it was an old lady singing, not Cee Lo. After that, I recognized and moved through it and didn't hate it. Is it amazing, no...it doesn't stand out as amazing, but there are a few dance songs (I'll be Around) that make you want to get up and dance. This album was very early 2000's and a move from hard rap to booty shaking club rap/R&B. They aren't deep or meaningful, but they are fun to dance and grind to. Not sure why its on this list, unless they are just trying to say can you believe a guy that sounds like this made not one but two albums.
Misleading Titling. The album should be "Cee-Lo Green ... Is A Fairly Average Singer. It's pleasant enough, might make good background music in a suburban family diner. Bland.
77% Best: The Art of Noise; I'll Be Around; All Day Love Affair; Let’s Stay Together Must-Hear? Not quite
Its alright
It was fine, but did not deserve to be on this list.
The man may be trash but this is a pretty solid record. Nice variety of hip-hop & soul.. beats are solid, nice flow. Maybe a tad too long though.
mi stava piacendo un sacco, poi mi ha iniziato a tumulare i testicoli
tutte molto sullo stile crazy, genere che trovo assai leggero e piacevole ma diciamo non mi resta molto. 3 pieno
This is going to be fun. Nice, but will probably be another 3.
Pretty impressive album, CeeLo Green throws modern soul a twist with some hip hop and good sampling. 3.25 / 5 stars
I said this about a few albums now but it’s really a tale of two halves. First half was incredible. The soundscape was amazing. It produced really well and then it got the second half and I just felt like the album fell flat.
good
Day616 - this is definitely 2004,just throw cee-lo, timbaland, pharrell and ludacris in a pot and see what comes out
Not entirely my thing, but the production was mostly nice.
Early 2000s bops featuring production by Pharrell & Timbaland.
I knew I'll be around. Rest of the album blended Imo. pretty good, no songs I didn't like.

Lmao this was fun. 3 stars, fuck it. Fire work, Mr. Lo. Fave songs: - The Art Of Noise - Living Again - I'll Be Around - I Am Selling Soul - All Day Love Affair - Glockappella - Let's Stay Together
Sad this is starting with a rapist. Silly to open an album with 2 intros, but ok. This is CeeLo when he still had it. 7.2/10
7/10
This doesn't belong on the list -- but this was kind of a bop, it's a massive guilty pleasure. It was so breezy to listen to, I honestly can't even complain. Shout out to "The Art of Noise" and "Evening News" specifically, those tracks did the most for me.
Raspy. My throat hurts just listening to this much falsetto.
Pretty fun album. A couple songs were standout bangers and the rest were fine to listen to.
Struggled to get through this all - not that it wasn’t good….
This wasn't my style of music, but it was fine. Personal enjoyment: 3/5 Relevance to this list: 2/5
Nothing really grabbed me here
I enjoyed a lot of this, but found myself skipping through some songs also. Giving this a 2.5, but I'll round up to a 3 because it's a Friday and it was a mostly fun listen.
We, as a culture, have moved on from Cee Lo Green, and he deserves that, but for a few years, he was really cooking. This album suffers from typical 2000s bloat, but virtually every song that wasn't produced by Cee Lo himself is pretty solid, and the parade of mostly Atlanta-centric guests gives it a real party vibe at times. But there's a lot of chaff here.
Made a bit of a mistake with this one, thought he was the one who wears a hood. He's not. Don't know where he got the sole machine from. He's not. Didn't have time to listen to this in one go, which is probably just as well as I'd have been bored or annoyed and much more scathing. Basically bits of it were good, bits of it were shite, bits of it were stolen from George Clinton, and the rest was there. We've had a lot worse than this on here, and a lot that was infinitely betters im going to give it a mediocre 3
I don't think this outshines many albums of the 00's
I liked this better than I expected to, but didn’t quite get through the whole thing. I tend to gravitate more towards the ones where he sings versus raps. This is a two or three for me, but I will give it three.
3/5
It’s OK
At first I wondered why this album was on the list. But it’s actually better than a thought. It’s got great production, cool beats and the flows are cool.
I liked the songs with featured artists and some of the soul numbers. Unfortunately the filler on this one brings down my review to three stars.
Hard album to enjoy, to be honest. I think I just get annoyed by Cee-Lo's voice, even though the music was good.
для любителей рэпа... (3 ставлю только за песни с Фаррелом, без него было бы 2)
Cee-Lo Green definitely deserves atleast one album on this list, but I have an argument that it shouldn't be this one. Just going off of playcounts alone (a terrible parameter), on Spotify as of today, this album has one song "I'll Be Around" that stands out with 50 million listens. It's a good track. However, no other song even comes close to that on this record. Meanwhile his most popular song, "Crazy" (on a different album), as over 1 BILLION streams. His second most popular song, "Fuck You", has close to 500 million streams... I did enjoy this album however. It's got the foundational elements that make his music good: fun beats and production, nice lyrics, and his famously unique voice.
Cee Lo can throw down some rhymes, no doubt. It as also cool to see him assume different styles of rap throughout the album. My “beef” is that it was a bit bloated, and feel like at least 3 songs could have been culled, and the most of the remaining songs could use a 15% edit/trim.
wow the mixing on this is bad, sounds like a million things at the exact same level and it blends together... the actual music isnt bad but samey and too long
*Actually not a bad album. Fun to listen to. Melodic and a little soulful. RATING - 6.5/10
Party in the studio - didn’t hate - didn’t like - it was as if it never happened
i mean... i guess this was fine? i'll be honest, these tracks weren't as impactful or memorable as i was hoping they were. i'll just slap a 3 on this one and call it a day
There’s a lot I like here, the song with timber lake is really fun , the singing is soulful and the rapping is fun. It does feel like it captured the time really well… it drags on a little for me
I like Cee Lo Green and had no idea he has such a gritty rap album. I preferred the stand alone songs over the features though
Not bad. I love Cee Lo's voice, but I really much prefer hearing him paired up with Danger Mouse in Gnarls Barkley. 3/5
Cee-Lo had better albums with Goodie Mob. It feels like he tried to reinvent soul but stuck in his ego. It's new enough my brain goes not the soul music I grew up with, but catchy and good enough to want to listen to more. Some of the songs just don't work with his voice though. With him having a unique voice it can be distracting on some tracks. Works great on a few.
Pretty good at times and pretty average at times. His voice annoys me a little. Couple of the songs had me tuned in a bit more than most, but this one was pretty average through and through.
Got a smooth voice and this was chock full of mega star guests. A lot of songs were really good, but others were really not good. I am Selling Soul sounded like the intro to an 80s action cop show. Going to be pretty firmly in a 3 here.
The only 2 Cee Lo Green songs that I know aren't on here so we'll see how this goes. Liking this a lot and then really hate some parts of Scrap Metal. Glockapella is an incredible name for a song. This was just ok. Low 3.
Despite it being Cee Lo Green, this album is pretty good. The beats are good, the features are good, Cee Lo's voice is good, but he's a much better singer than rapper in my opinion and also a few songs too long. Much better than I expected, but unfortunately I have to knock down a star because Cee Lo is a piece of shit.
Mixed feelings about this one. I liked the energy of the music… but goddamn Cee-Lo Green has one of the most annoying voices and presence out there. My man sounds like Eric Cartman on the mic
It's fine. Not sure why it's here, but it's fine. Mind you, I didn't pay much attention to the lyrics, but when I did, they tended to be a bit cringey. Starting with that spoken word intro with Cee-Lo's son.
Appreciated the beats, the flow, collaborations and just the sound of his voice in general. Wouldn't be upset ever if it came back on. The album art is remarkably corny to me though
Best Song: Childz Play Don't get the hype
Hard to believe he's a soul machine when this wasn't really a soul album. The beats were decent though.
Yeah it wasn't bad
Got to give Cee-Lo props for including credits to OG Stax greats James Banks, Eddie Marion, and Henderson Thigpen, as well as Philip Bailey and Maurice White of Earth, Wind, and Fire. Play time felt a bit long but if that's what it takes to tell the tell, so be it.
Melodic rap with a some real bops. I'm not the biggest fan of most of it, but that's just preference; I can see the talent and creativity.
Some fun songs
Not as good as I remember. 3
Cee Lo has a solid flow and great beats backing him up. He's also a clever lyricist. And I believe him as angry, cool, and smooth, but he's unconvincing when he's trying to convince me to have sex with him.
Interesting... I did like it. Thought this not would be my music.
For the most part, I really enjoyed this album. For me, the explicit nature of the music grows weary on me, and I am grateful that the album sort of moves between the graphic and the celebratory. Mostly, I find Cee-Lo and many of his guests extremely talented and the music is creative, witty, and charming in a way. Cee-Lo sometimes seems like he has a bit of a messianic complex, but I am not sure he buys it.
Can't deny this guy's voice is solid
Cee Lo has such a distinct voice, makes this one kinda stick out for me. Catchy tunes, entertaining lyrics.
Wish he was a little bit Skee-Lo.
Enjoyable album but no stand out singles I’d return to. I liked the trumpets and the variety in the album overall. A solid listen.
This is a tough one to review. The novelty of Cee Lo Green really wore off about a decade ago, and the sexual misconduct allegations certainly didn't help him. To top it off, this album doesn't even have his best song (the infinitely catchy "F*ck You"). Despite that, I can't really call it a bad album and I can still see the appeal it had. There's a slightly gritty and non-serious take on soul-funk here that just made for a good pop album at the time. Not perfect and not timeless, but Cee Lo did have his deserved 15 minutes of fame.
Typ skön/feel good hiphop ändå, o känns som flera låtar man hört här o där. Stabilt!
Många gästartister! Helhetsintrycket är blandat
Maybe I've been exposed to too many a Cee Lo Green meme growing up on the internet but I could not for the life of me take this thing seriously, and maybe that's the whole point. He is extraordinarily himself. There's an obnoxious novelty to his demeanor. There is no possible way he could be mistaken as anybody else. His inflection is definitely southern and precise; but add in very ridiculous, goofy and gaudy bars at every opportunity as well as using his voice in a far more soulful way, and you end up with the soul machine. He is all over the place on this thing, in a very eccentric and cartoony way. It is a LOT. There's a lot of character here and I can appreciate it in a vacuum for a character study of the bling era. I can feel Cee Lo staring into my soul, and I do not like it one bit. He is a malevolent entity.
Jo men bra emellanåt
I really enjoyed a lot of what Cee Lo does after this album, but this feels very messy and unfocused. This album feels like it’s been made by an artist who hasn’t found their niche yet. It isn’t atrocious, but I wouldn’t be interested in re-listening. Also, abismal album cover. First track is a ten out of ten, though. 3/5
The first time I heard of CeeLo Green was when he released F You, so you'll gather I'm pretty ignorant of the hip hop genre (he was already a big deal by then, I find), although this project is helping to catch me up a bit. I quite liked this blend of laid back beats, soul and and funk; I liked that there was singing alongside the rap, and the little trumpety bits were up my street too. I liked the upbeat vibe, and danced around quite a lot. I'm still not confident in rating this sort of music objectively, and it was a bit long, but 3 feels right for the level of creativity, production, and energy. Glockappella nearly lost it a star, but things picked up again; Let's Stay Together was gorgeous.
Nummers boeien niet genoeg, teveel filler, wel vaak origineel.
Meh
This is very of the time. It's fine, I suppose, but it isn't much more than a moment in time.
A lot of variety to what I was expecting. Quite fun, if not too long
I rather enjoyed this. Plenty catchy, not all. And suffered from bring too long and therefore boring in parts.
Really good album, could've been 4 stars on another day but didn't completely vibe with me. Songs aren't too varied and the more varied songs are worse. I'd listen to it again but not a go-to album.
Jag gillade den men lyssnade inte igenom hela
intro- 5 soul machine- 5 the art of noise- 5 living again- 5 ill be around- 5 the one- 4 my kind of people- 5 childz play- 4 i am selling soul- 5 all day love affair- 5 no more its just not good
I was thinking I would enjoy this one more. Its okay, its like a soul singer tried his hand at a rap album and it just kinda falls flat, although that song with Timbaland is pretty damn good, I wish the rest of the album had that vibe.
Gnarly Davidson > Cee Lo Green and its insane to me that this album is on the list but neither of the Gnarls Barkley albums made it. Bad list? No! Bad YOU The song with Timbaland bumps though and this albums continues to prove that anything Pharrell touches turns to gold. How he was sued for Blurred Lines and not Let’s Stay Together is a mystery to me but damned if that song isn’t the high point of this overly long and sometimes cringy album
It was ok very warbly
The guy sometimes sounds like Steve Urkel.
I prefer old(er) school hip hop than this, but I didn't mind listening to this album. Nice mix of sound, but it didn't really click for me. This is good background music, but unfortunately not much else.
first listen i do not think this is very good
Good album, but fuck Cee-Lo Green
Ultra vibe-y, some great throwback features, and some super catchy songs. There are some annoying parts to it that i would not go back to though.
Funk
Enjoyed this one more than I thought I would! Some unexpected features from TI and Ludacris (LUDA!!) made it worth the listen! Hated a couple tracks, looking at you Scrap Metal and Glockapella (despite the hilarious name)
This is a cool album. It has a bit of that Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik and Parliament vibe. I enjoyed it as background music while I worked, and a few songs piqued my interest. I give this a 3.5.
Because of the title, and not knowing what to expect, I thought there would be even more of a Soul emphasis on this album, but there was a lot of variety that touched a lot of genres. A lot of ATL on this album. I remember once seeing Cee-Lo and his lady at Burlington Coat Factory. She was pregnant and they were looking at baby gear. The timing is right for the kid on the intro to have been that baby...cute. 3.5
Fun album, ran a little long but was enjoyable. None of the tracks stood out as excellent, just easy to listen to. 5/10
I liked the intro skit, it is very of the time. I see that the album is over an hour long, which is almost always too long. "The Art of Noise" is an awesome song. Great energy. I love the production, and the scatting at the end. I didn't really like "I'll Be Around". Not a lot going on in this song, it felt very one dimensional. It was mostly repeating one line over and over. The beat sounded like classic Timbaland, I felt like I was listening to Justin Timberlake. Same for "The One". Not great. "My Kind of People" has better vocals and I like the horns. "Childz Play" is dope. The fast lyrics are great, and Ludacris is a great feature. So far the album has felt like Cee Lo & Friends, with the songs being defined by the features. "I Am Selling Soul" is a super Tribe-sounding song in the first half. It sounds like he's trying to emulate Phife Dawg. The second half switches it up, and it was pretty tight too. Good song. "All Day Love Affair" was a nice switch-up to a slower pace, but it wasn't really my speed. "Evening News" has a cool beat and great flow. "Glockapella" is an amazing song name, that's all I have to say about that. This album has so many songs that sound like other songs, and I can't quite remember any of them. "When We Were Friends" is another one of those. This album was pretty enjoyable, but none of the songs really stood out as amazing. It was a fun listen that I was ready to be done with about 2/3 of the way through. 6/10
Very fun
I kinda cringed when I saw this guy/album, but there were times I was pleasantly surprised. There were some songs that remined me of the good old R&B days with some nice grooves and sound. Liked Soul Machine, My Kind of People and my favorite song off the album, All Day Love Affair. Songs I didn't really care for are when he tried to go full blown gangster. It went on little too long, but for the most part, I thought the album was decent. Can't say I've become a fan, but I was really expecting to dislike this album. Side note, the song Living Again has the lines, "Hut 2 3 4, what the hell are we fighting for". These lines are lyrics written by Prince, for a band called The Time, in the song Walk. Shout out to both Prince and Morris Day and The Time! 3
3 F this sexual predator and piece of shit. That out of the way, I begrudgingly admit to liking most things I’ve heard by CeeLo. I know a lot of people have trouble with his voice, but I’ve always kind of dug it - it’s super distinct and works really well with the brand of soul he puts out. Fuck/Forget You (pick your poison) and Crazy are both classics, and there’s even a cover of Violent Femmes’ Gone Daddy Gone he has with Gnarls that I’ve always liked as well - but man, nothing on this album feels like his A-game in comparison. For the most part, it’s still pretty decent, but there also isn’t anything here that really stands out as particularly great, which makes an 18-track album like this feel somewhat bloated. There’s definitely some stuff that could have been cut, with Childz Play feeling like the most obvious example (sounded like dude was rapping over an Itchy & Scratchy cartoon minus the gratuitously fun cartoon violence), but honestly, even then I’m not sure how much that would have fixed things. It definitely would have felt less padded, but something about this album also felt really unstructured to me, almost like there was no real flow from one song to the next. In fact, the only time I really found myself in a groove was around the time things started wrapping up with the tracks Sometimes and Let’s Stay Together. For as much shit as my dad will toss on Sometimes for its flute usage, the instrumentation worked for me paired with the beats and insightful lyrics - though, the highlight of the song (and probably album) for me was the delivery of “Brother I'm eating” as timed with the cutout of the music. Honestly, I have no idea why I got so much enjoyment out of that, but I found myself looking forward to it with each listen. As for Let’s Stay Together, I found it to be a really solid R&B track with an enjoyable feature from Pharrell that… also references Oasis? I refuse to believe that homeboy isn’t with his delivery of “Live foreeeeeeever”. Anyway, IS CeeLo Green the Soul Machine? Nah, probably not. At least, he’s certainly no Marvin Gaye. The dude has his hits, but I’m not sure he’s a back catalog kind of guy. He’s also a predator, so do with that what you will.
It's a decent album. No bangers, but not bad. 3/5
I started out a little iffy on his voice, but I actually got super into this as it stretched on. His voice can be an acquired taste though, and then I discovered he’s kind of a creep. Whoops. The album’s still pretty good I guess. Best song: Die Trying
Cee Lo has spunk.

Pretty good.
Certainly not the style of music I normally listen to, but it was a good sound.
This was an unexpectedly fun. I'm not a fan of the genre, so there's little chance I will listen to it again, but I enjoyed it!
I liked the soul/hip-hop sound but I am not sure that any of the tracks really stood out to me apart from My Kind of People and that’s because I was trying to work out where I’d heard the melody before . (Eventually realised it was Pass the Dutchie.)
Not my kind of music but I could appreciate it was fun to listen to.
Nice
It was ok.
voice sounds like a parody but its a fun album
Chill, generally upbeat and light-hearted. Something to play on a quiet weekend morning for a positive mood. But nothing really special.
Was pretty good until he went off into gangsta rap territory.
I always had some block against cee lo green cuz he seems arrogant LOL but I enjoyed the album quite a bit. His albums names don't do him any favours though... 3-3.5
I was very obsessed with Cee-Lo's first album, "Perfect Imperfections" when it came out and thought that was what I was getting today. I haven't listened to Cee-Lo in years and was excited for a trip down memory lane. This is not that album, it's the follow up album. This one is more straightforward hiphop-r&B featuring Cee-Lo's unique voice. It's more consistent in sound but, as a result, less interesting to my ears. I listened to both today and I still prefer the earlier album, "Perfect Imperfections". That debut is full of weird freaky funky hip hop similar to albums by Outkast.
It was good
Quite fun, enjoyed lots of this. Feela a bit of a strange inclusion for a list without that much hip hop, and I can't imagine it is still making anyone's top 1000 20 years on.
Not his best work … anonymous, essentially.
Did y'all see that solid gold outfit he wore at that one award show? If you don't know what I'm talking about go ahead and give it a google. Why didn't anyone say Cee-3P-Lo? It was right there! Anyway- IDK why, but I feel like I'm supposed to be giving this album a haughty critique, but I like the overall vibe of this. So I'll say "Bonne Surprise" which just means "pleasantly surprised", but in French so that I can keep up my streak of being pretentious edgelord.
Me sorprendió gratamente, es un rap mezclado con soul y melódicas que en algunos temas se disfruta. Un aire a Fugees más actual.
Well produced, sampling is top notch, good but not great.
This was fine. Some bangers and some pretty forgettable stuff. Feels like a solid 3.
I first became aware of Cee-Lo Green many (many) years ago when somebody shared with me an example of "kinetic typography", which turned out to be a lyrics video of Cee-Lo's "Fuck You" (the explicit version), and I enjoyed both the creative lyrics animation and the song. I'm not sure I've heard a lot else by him, though, and I'm disappointed that we didn't get his album with that on it (2010 "The Lady Killer"), as this was clearly his biggest hit, but I'm guessing that the editors had already added this 2004 album and didn't want to exchange it? I also didn't realize that he started out with Goodie Mob, so I've probably heard more with him than I realize. Either way, it seems fine as an album, and I appreciate it that it's *not* a particularly gangster-oriented hip-hop album ("Glockapella" excepted), as well as appreciating his Dirty South roots. His voice is both distinctive (and impressively fast at times) and a bit hard to take over an hour of listening to, but I enjoyed all of the other artists that appear on the album too (especially Pharrell Williams). The highlights for me were "I'll be around", "Scrap Metal", and "Die trying". Overall, though, it could probably have been about a half-hour shorter and not lost much (maybe just pull out the tracks from "The one" through "All day love affair"?).
got me bopping along--very nice though wanted even more soul
This is pretty good, it starts with some strong tracks, including the one with Pharrell. I like the southern style, there are some good funky beats on here. It's fun and happy music for the most part, the use of brass in some beats is great and makes it sound more like the soulful record the title promises (it's a rap album really to me) It's a bit long and towards the end I got bored, I don't know if the lyrics have a huge amount to say. So I'll go down the middle for a mixed bag
Rating: 6.5/10 Pretty good overall, not a huge fan of his voice but the production is great.
Oooh! Hasn’t he been cancelled? I loved Gnarls Barkley and obviously this is him again… and despite my reservations and cringing I thought it was a pretty fun listen. It wasn’t very soulful, bit of a misnomer but I got carried along with the beats.
I had a real difficult time taking anything on this album seriously. I guess that's on me, in some regard. It's jammed-packed with arrangement ideas, there's a lot going on in here. I get the impression it was a lot of fun to make this record, there's an enthusiastic energy flowing, but it also strikes me as frivolous and I just couldn't connect.
I was not expecting to like this, but I gotta say it was pretty fun and creative. The production was on-point, and his flow was pretty great. I liked the darker turn it took later in the album. A pleasant surprise! ...And... I just learned that he sucks as a human. Fuckin' hell.
Enjoyed more as it went along.
2,5
It's cool that he experimented with new genres, he's the best in his element, just saying.
never actually listened to cee lo green before but heard of them, this album was quite enjoyable
he kinda looks like my grandpa except younger, balder, and also is a rapist its a silly 2000s party rap album. i like it but you def don't need to hear before you die.
decent album, idk why its got such a low rating
It was alright. DNF. Too long.
3/5
A throwback to the time when everything was produced by timbaland and pharrell
On paper, you’d think being a hip-hop head would help me get into this album. A Cee-Lo Green solo album! You know– Goodie Mob, Outkast affiliates, Danger Mouse, multi-talented genre-flip-flopper, Southern hip-hop. And production by The Neptunes, Timbo, DJ Premier, Organized Noise, and even Jazze Pha?! If you told me these things theoretically, I’d assume I’d be very into it, especially since Southern rap is my favorite subgenre of hip-hop. But I took one look at this and saw a 73 minute runtime, 18 tracks, the feature list, and that cover art, and I knew immediately that this would be a bumpy ride even before I hit play. For the most part, nothing here is bad. It’s just painfully average and/or less than. Cee-Lo may be able to genre flip from hip-hop to soul to gospel, but whatever he’s doing, he’s always doing it with commendable mediocrity. He’s a B+ student across the board, and that’s when he’s giving it his all. Unfortunately, he’s not giving it his all here, and that’s because 18 tracks is a lot to ask out of an artist. I’d say most of these songs are fine as a baseline, but very, very few stand out as anything particularly special. That might be because of the production. Sure, …Is the Soul Machine may seem like it has a list of heavy-hitting super producers, but the beats feel second-tier, almost like loose beats they didn’t know what else to do with, so they gave them to their good friend Cee-Lo so he could at least say he had XYZ producing his album. Now, they’re still good beats– these producers rarely miss, especially back in 2004 at their respective peaks– but they are not the best beats any of them made in 2004, that’s for fucking sure. Still, they’re good enough to keep this record’s head about water. That said, to say this is filled with super-producers is a bit of a misnomer. Of the 16 actual songs on this thing, Cee-Lo produces 6 himself, while people without Wikipedia pages like Traxx and Locsmif produce another 3. In practice, more than half of this record is produced by mid-tier producers. And then there’s the features, who are mostly only names you *might* know if you’re an extreme hip-hop nerd. The two features who probably cost Cee-Lo anything (Ludacris and T.I.) bring some of the worst performances of their whole careers, and this is the era when they both were blowing up!! In fact, “Childz Play” might be one of the worst hip-hop songs I’ve had to listen to during this project. That’s how much that song sucks. But otherwise, …Is the Soul Machine is fine. It’s a quintessential example of a mediocre hip-hop record. It suffers mostly from bloat, which can weigh mediocrity down to the point where it becomes intolerable to listen to. But this record also suffers from its supposed ambition. I can tell just from the genre-hopping and ever-so-slightly experimental choices, Cee-Lo thought he was making his version of The Love Below, which has its own inexcusable issues, but at least you have to commend Andre 3000 for not only trying but for even being able to try. Cee-Lo can’t even make an attempt. No matter how many phone calls he makes to his friends and connections, no matter how many genres he tries on, no matter how many songs he adds to his album to showcase his range, he remains a B+ student. The inevitable result is not a painful listen, but rather a forgettable one. Nothing special. I’d rather have the Gnarls Barkley record or even the “Fuck You” album on here if I had to pick, but I’d prefer nothing at all.
Very unique voice with a pretty unique style that just doesn’t really do it for me. 5/10
I think it's fun and all but couldn't get really into it. I think I prefer his Gnarls stuff. This album also reeks of early 2000s R&B; not a bad thing but some music is very stuck in its current time period. 7/10.
Cee Lo Green can rap far better than I expected, first song was the best showcase of this. Early doors I thought this would be an unexpectedly great album. As it went on it became increasingly generic, from ludacris onwards I think. Music and lyrics were fairly forgettable. Failed to live up to early billing, 2.5.
Fun times
i felt pretty silly listening to this while sitting hunched over my desk doing work cos this is obviously meant to be listened to at a fun outdoor party in the summer. but it was enjoyable anyway. though a bit overlong, i found a lot of the second half album fairly emotionally engaging in a way that surprised me—”scrap metal” was an evil diss track while “when we were friends” was really lucid and moving…i’m sorry cee lo i was unfamiliar with your game…
Soul music rarely moves me the way soul moves others who vibe with it. I fully understand the power of soul to grab a listener and resonate physically and emotionally in one's self. I just ain't that person. So, good music, that gets an unfair average rating from me.
Decent southern-soul rap that fuses the best of the early 2000 southern hip-hop worlds - with the sounds of tight, crisp, Neptunes production-backed artists like T.I, and the eccentricity and southern pride of the music of Outkast and CeeLo's former group Goodie Mob. The execution does still leave a lot to be desired though, everything here gets repetitive fast, though thankfully CeeLo's seamless transitions between soulful singing and talk-rapping always remain a highlight. This record falls into the early 2000s (southern but also general) hip-hop trope of being longer than it needs to be, pairing the genuinely great moments here with poorly-aged slop, with a song like 'Childz Play' being damn-near unlistenable...Ludacris aside. There were some strong highlights, like 'The Art Of Noise', and I liked 'Scrap Metal' with CeeLo delivering this infectiously "over-the-top" vocal performance on the chorus. And the one-two of 'When We Were Friends' and 'Sometimes' may be the most heartwarming moments on the album, boasting some of the record's best production; with these flute and string embellishments driving the latter. While it starts strong, its bag of tricks is emptied quickly. What's left is enjoyable, yes, but uninteresting to say the least. A good amount of southern artists were doing this sound significantly better.
I thought 3 stars, but John says it should be 3.7 "because it's just chill"
Not bad, but if Cee-Lo is to be included on this list, it should be for his album "The Lady Killer" or Gnarls Barkley's "St. Elsewhere." No need for more than either of those two. I'll give it an extra half-star for what may be the first recorded use of the phrase, "fuck around and find out" in the song "Glockappella".
Lekkere R&B. Ik zelf ben wat minder van het rap-zingen, maar de muziek/melodie is wel heel leuk. ***
I hoped for more from this. Didn’t really grab me.
Some tunes were better than they had any right to be, but I found the rest of it slightly annoying.
Not into the style at all. I hated the opening tracks. Got a little more interesting about 4 tracks in. Still not a fan.

Still one of the worst live performances I have ever seen. Album not terrible
Not bad honestly, had a decent time with it.
I’ve never listened to Cee-Lo and was expecting something somewhat different. This was a nice surprise! I guess it made me think of OutKast at some points? Maybe that’s a thing, I’m not sure.
Surprisingly, off to an energetic start. Honestly not terrible, as much as rap is not my thing. Oh, this is the dude who made Crazy, this figures.
wasnt expecting this to be this good ngl
I'm not a fan of this kind of music, for me this album is pretty average and not very interesting, that's all I can say
