Reviews (page 8 of 13)

really sad but also incredibly deep and meaningful songs that really showcase his skills and songwriting capability

Fantastic album. Rick Rubin had a fantastic idea to revive his career. Personal Jesus and Hurt are favourites of this album. A beautiful album to listen to via headphones.

Something so hypnotic about this album

Honestly the power of this album, despite having many covers, was a bit of a shock to me after listening to much older Cash recordings to this point. I was familiar with some of these songs but 1) didn't realize they were all on the same album and 2) hadn't realized how good the other tracks were. Maybe you need to be in a certain frame of mind to stick with it for the entirety of the album, but on the whole I really enjoyed it and was encouraged by how this kind of creative output can be done so late in life.

Is it possible that appreciation for music is subjective? Nah. Some things just hit all the right notes.

everyone i know goes away in the end...

Great album.

probably the best thing ive heard from johnny cash but that doesnt mean its all that amazing. outside of a few highlights its just boring. 7/10

Love me some Johnny Cash. Especially his old man voice on these later records. Never realized how many covers were on this one. Hurt still is so sad to listen to.

What an emotional rollercoaster of an album. So many beautiful and sad songs!!! I haven't heard this before so I was unaware how many covers there would be, but they add a lot in my eyes. Johnny Cash covered these in the last years of his life, and as an old man brings a different perspective to them than the original writers who were young. Glad I listened to this, it was dope. Fav songs: - Hurt - Give My Love to Rose - I Hung My Head - In My Life - Tear Stained Letter - We'll Meet Again

Wow! I had completely forgotten about this album. It's fantastic. It takes me back to the early 2000s. It was after this that "mature" music performers starting Rick Rubin to do "stripped back" albums where they tried to remember what made them good in the first place! My response to the Willie Nelson album was favourable, so it might just be that I have a soft spot for cover albums by old country geezers, but this is in a different league. The cover of "Hurt", ( and the associated music video which with the contrast of Cash and his wife in their last days against all the video footage of his life, is a piece of art in itself) makes this album worth listening to alone. But there are a few other high points like, "The Man Comes Around" and "I Hung My Head" and there's not an actual duff track on here. (Alright, some are a bit too schmaltzy or corny for me. "Danny Boy" and "Desperado" aren't songs I would chose to listen to, no matter who is covering them. Great tunes, of course, but I can't take them seriously.) I want to give it 5 stars, but realistically, it's a 4. Hang on. How many stars did I give Willie Nelson? ...I gave it a 4. Okay, so this gets 4.5 from me!

Some great reworking of classic tracks, Hurt alone is worth the entry fee….

A great CD with some covers like Personal Jesus that I didn't expect.

what do i even say, its johnny cash

A moving and well-done collection of covers.

I liked this way more than I thought I would, especially The Man Comes Around and Sam Hall.

All covers and all good. Love it.

It was really good! I have such an appreciation for Mr. Cash now. Simple and effective.

I mean it’s damn solid. I feel bad rating it higher than I did his live albums, don’t remember what I gave it. Hard to hate on this even tho it’s super Rubin-ified

Eerie introduction with the Bible verse. But it picks up quickly The Man Comes Around showcases that Cash still had a strong voice and good ear for melody Hurt absolutely smacks. It’s lyrically beautiful and Johnny Cash’s cover offers a darker perspective of the song rather than angst. It’s master class on how to properly cover a song. The story is he just initially read the lyrics and was down for it. Which was a smart move on Rick Rubin’s part. Absolutely amazing song. Highlights: Hurt In My Life Tear Stained Letter Desperado

The Man Around Hurt Give My Love to Rose I hung My Head Sam Hall Desperado We’ll Meet Again A very fun listen. Always have loved Johnny Cash. His voice and guitar are all he needs. Would love to listen to this album again

While I didn't care much for Johnny Cash when I was younger, I have developed an appreciation as I have gotten older. Very good album

This album intrigued me prior to listening as I've never listened to a Johnny Cash album. I immediately noticed that this album is mostly composed of covers as I saw my favorite song ever made, "In My Life". As I started too listen to the album I figured Johnny Cash's voice would annoy me, but it actually grew on me. Listening to the first few songs, I really enjoyed the calm nature of the songs. I finally got to, "In My Life" and really liked it. I liked how they shaped the song to fit Cash's style including the change to George Martin's piano solo. This goes for the rest of album as all songs are adapted well. Really solid, 4/5

This town ain’t big enough for the two of us 🤠 His earlier stuff is better

Rick Rubin strikes again, this time with a great Johnny Cash album. The first track is a great Cash song and it makes me kind of sad that there are no more of his original songs. Still there are plenty of great covers here. "Hurt", "I hung my head", "Personal Jesus" and "In my Life" to name a few. The sparse production is great and focuses on Cash singing and guitar playing. The feeling conveyed through the singing is really something special. Albeit there are a few dud covers (looking at you "Bridge over trouble waters"), it is still a great album.

Cash’s Hurt cover is probably the first song that comes to mind for “best cover song of all time”. There are many great ones: Hendrix’ All Along the Watchtower, Jeff Buckley’s Hallelujah (although I prefer John Cale’s rendition slightly), Whitney’s I Will Always Love You, etc., but I think The Man in Black’s Hurt is number 1 if ranking them is necessary. Hurt is the clear highlight overall on this album, but there are other really good songs. The title track is great, as is I Hung My Head - classic Cash. The covers of Bridge Over Troubled Water, In My Life, Desperado, and I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry are all fine renditions, perhaps better as part of this album than as individual tracks. I think I’ve listened to the American series and remembered this being the clear best. It’s the first example in my lifetime that I can think of where an artist in their twilight years produces some truly incredible work, a trend that would follow several years later with artists like David Bowie, Leonard Cohen, and David Crosby among others (The Rolling Stones album from 2023 is awesome too).

Such brutal, gravelly honesty to Cash's voice. I've listened to American IV a handful of times and it always mentally transports me to the porch of a quiet farmyard shack in western Tennessee overlooking the Mississippi. Aside from the clear standout, Hurt, I really enjoyed Bridge Over Troubled Water, First Time Ever I Saw Your Face and Danny Boy. I must say that something sounds off with Desperado, it feels a bit out of place, but that's a small criticism against what is a quality collection of mostly American classics.

Didn’t think I would like it as much as I did. But you can’t help but get sucked in

This is a very powerful album. Deep and rather dark, and oozing with Cash’s “self”. I worried about some of the really iconic covers, but Cash pulls them off. Some better than others, but all OK. Johnny Cash was a great singer, and even at 70 years old, he still could bring emotion and personality. This is not a happy album, but it’s not really maudlin either. But dark, and real. Sparsely recorded, a man reflecting back on his life. 4/5

“Hurt” is extraordinary. I think everybody knows that. I found it hard to take the rest of the album seriously after that peak. It’s like your grandpa with the cool, smoky voice got a karaoke CD recording session gift for Xmas and nailed it. I was thinking that this CD belongs in the memento cabinet along with tennis trophies and photos of the grandkids. Then, I applied a little patience and began to hear the quiet magnificence of this rough and tumbled old man. It will be a few more years before I need to listen to this again, but I will listen to it again.

Solid as always 4.1

If you need a good cry this morning go watch the video for "Hurt" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8AHCfZTRGiI. One of the last things he and June flimed a few months before they died. Cash's version of the Nine Inch Nails song is incredible in its own right, but the video is one of the best ever made (especially for Cash fans and those that know his story). This is his last album, its all solid. He is one of the rare singers whose voice continued to get better as he got older. Go see your favorite artists live - they won't be around forever.

Think Hurt is overrated and Bridge over trouble water doesn't really hit, overall this is still a very powerful album with so much character in that voice

Great album and generally great song choices. The twists from the originals are a lot of fun. Loses a point for predominantly being covers.

Confusing. 4

Some of the best cover versions ever on here, breathing a completely different power into the songs. Sometimes maybe a bit much for one listen but lots of great stuff here, songs like "Hung My Head" and "Hurt" are amazing

Includes one of the great covers of all time in ‘Hurt’. Cash’s voice is something else - it feels like his entire life is contained in each syllable.

Didn't even realise I Hung My Head was a cover until now

Beautifully emotional album. Hurt is one of the greatest songs ever written, and I love the original and this for different reasons.

FFS Didn’t expect to cry 3 times on the way to work. Hurt is one of those songs that bring me instantly to tears every time I hear it. That and personal Jesus are some of the best covers out there. I was skeptical about “In my life” and what he could add to such a perfect song. Again, tears! I didn’t really need to hear another version of Danny boy but fucking hell that destroyed me. There are a few other covers that don’t hit the mark for me and feel a little on the nose.

It was good to hear this so far removed from the hype when it first came out. Very emotional.

It's cool that Johnny Cash got to end his career by absolutely styling on a bunch of younger musicians with incredible covers of their work. The originals are good too, particularly the opening track. Some of his covers of older material (like Danny Boy) are just okay, though Sam Hall rules.

A lovely epitaph for a legend.

Who would not want to hear Johnny Cash singing karaoke?

His signature baritone sounds as good as ever, if a little world-worn. His final album released when he was alive, has a mostly wonderful mix of songs I think Big Iron and Wichita Lineman should have stayed on this reissue, but it's easily found on the next album Unearthed. We'll Meet Again just sounds so wistful.

Some were bad, some were excellent

Solid.

Very solemn and beautiful covers!

The Man In Black’s legacy and mortality loom heavy over 15 haunting closing statements.

Well, super sad album. You have to listen it thinking that it was its last before dying. Overall it’s not exactly my cup of tea, but i get the appeal of it. I loved the covers: hurt, personal jesus and we’ll meet again. Cool interpretations of already really cool songs.

Such a fascinating album to me. Cash’s cover of Hurt is a perfect statement on age. There are few songs from the perspective of a man his age, even fewer that are bound with such complicated emotions as he looks back on a life lived to the fullest. While I consider the Eagles original version of Desperado to be one of the greatest songs of all time, I’m glad Cash put his elderly spin on it here too. Don Henly comes in to harmonize the post-chorus and it could bring a tear to the eye. He knew how to pick ‘em for this record, because he picks a third song I’d consider to be one of the greatest written pieces of music of all time - with Danny Boy. Think we are done with good covers of the greatest songs of all time? WRONG! How about Bridge Over Troubled Water too! I’d seriously consider all four songs talks about above to be put on a record to introduce aliens to music, if we ever encounter them (although most of them as originals). That being said, I’ve always felt like Personal Jesus is overhyped and this cover doesn’t redeem it any more

Jolly Johnny at his best (and last).

Oh Johnny so sad

Zou het bijna heel hoog willen zetten in de top 2000. Dacht trouwens dat dat ene nummer van Samson en Garfield was

Think I preferred the live album, but still a decent listen. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Johnny Cash is the man! Some songs are much better than others though.

Just an amazing voice

It seems personal considering it's mostly covers. Simple arrangements, Johnny warbling over them, and it works.

not the most upbeat

Would give it 5 if not essentially a cover album. Great stuff Johnny.

Faves: Hurt, I Hung My Head, Bridge Over Troubled Water (Fiona!!)

Really good music, drags on a little at times but I love Johnny Cash and his end of life reflections and voice were still beautiful

Listened to some of these songs a lot back then. Great album.

On the one hand, it’s an album of covers. On the other, one of those covers is “Hurt.” With the context of these songs being sung by an artist at the end of his life, I found the album quite touching. 3.5 rounded up

good set of covers.

#161. This is honestly way better than it has any right to be. 4/5: legitness

MEGET modigt af mig at lytte til Johnny Cashs cover af In My Life ude i offentligheden.

Mostly perfect. 4.5 stars.

Very poignant. It's mostly covers but Cash really makes his mark on these songs, his version of Hurt is especially moving and is in the same territory of Hallelujah and All Along the Watchtower in how much it's owned by the new artist.

So sad.

My main complaint is that “The Man Comes Around” is so knock-your-socks-off good that it outshines the rest of the album.

It must be tough to let Cash cover one of your songs knowing it can easily eclipse the original. If Cash wrote all these songs it would be a 5, but as it is it’s an excellent album of mostly covers. Hurt is more famous the Trent’s version and I think I like Cash’s version of Bridge Over Troubled Water more than S&G’s. Those two are the highlights for me but it’s all really good.

Interesting mix of covers with a unique take. Most of them work pretty well. All maintain Johnny Cash's unique sound and talk/sing style. I'm sure some of these introduced him to an entirely new audience.

Have you ever heard a voice that sort of left you in limbo? Johnny Cash did that for me. I’ve just rarely experienced something like it. The only other singer who has given me that feeling is Layne Staley. This album is proof to me that putting Rick Ruben on any project is going to improve it massively. This album was a huge comeback for Johnny, and it genuinely warms my heart that was the case. Because he deserved it, and to have this be the last thing he created before dying not long after is beautiful. And you feel that weight. This album is dark. It has an overwhelmingly heavy and foreboding sound. His voice resonates out into the endless cacophony of the universe, and he creates his own little world for 50 minutes. This is a double album of pretty much entirely covers. But if you want evidence on how to do proper covers, listen to this. Every cover becomes its own thing, and they are in no way derivative of the originals. To the point where Trent Reznor said Hurt wasn’t even his song anymore. Some might be put off by the simplicity of these covers. But I find it harrowing and melancholic in the most compelling way. The simplicity is where this album’s strengths lie. And on a gloomy, rainy day like today, I felt comfortable just sinking into the sound of this record. Don’t ever let your age determine what you can and can’t do. Because at 70, Johnny Cash created this. And that speaks volumes about what you are capable of creating even after you have been through everything life has to throw at you. Rating: 8/10

Never listened to an entire Johnny Cash album. It’s great. My only complaint is that a lot of songs sound too similar to differentiate. The ones that sound the most distinct had a backup vocalist or had a cool story like in I Hung My Head. The covers are great, didn’t think I needed a We’ll Meet Again cover by Cash. There are too many songs that were standouts, but here are a few; Standouts: Hurt, Give My Love to Rose, Bridge Over Troubled Water, I Hung My Head, In My Life, and Danny Boy.

Knowing this is his last album alive makes all these songs very haunting. There are more covers than I expected. But overall everything is very well done and a worthwhile listen

I’m a sucker for these records. Some all-timers on this one. 4/5

Johnny Cash at his best, very intimate and personal. The album carries a sense of sadness and sorrow, but it's also powerful.

Surprisingly good. Didn't expect I'd like this at all. Very specific mood, but excellently captures that rural america feeling.

Jesus Christ this album is so sad and so good.

nine inch nails cover enough to kill a grown man

Jesus that was sad but good. Hella reflective made me think about aging as I approached my bday

beautiful, moving album

Harrowing album. A man in the end of his life, with all the pain and memories that come with that. Truly beautiful

great storyteller

Quite like the first half. Some world-class songs, some seem like better ones could have been selected. hurt, hung my head, bridge over troubled, man comes around are soo good in Cash's versions. Not sure why we'll meet again or danny boy (which is so much better here than you'd think it had any right to be) are on this. I'll listen to them all again though. Cash is amazing

I enjoy this album

Mainly giving it a 4 because it's Johnny Cash. But it's Johnny Cash!

Probably Cash’s most notable entry in his American saga. It’s certainly the one that brought him more fully into my sphere. Before this album I really didn’t know enough about what an important figure he was in music - but his covers of songs that I knew and loved made me realize that he crossed over into and influenced other genres in ways I never fully realized. An album like this makes his duet of “Redemption Song” with Joe Strummer seem less bizarre. I love the paradox of the way this album begins and ends. It almost imbues “We’ll Meet Again” with its own kind of darkness. I’m pretty sure that “Hurt” was the big moment on this album, but for me, it’s the cover of “Personal Jesus.” The whole album is really an important entry in the career of one of the most important musical artists.

01) The Man Comes Around - 9,0 02) Hurt - 10,0 03) Give My Love To Rose - 8,5 04) Bridge Over Troubled Water - 8,0 05) I Hung My Head - 8,5 06) First Time Ever I Saw Your Face - 8,0 07) Personal Jesus - 9,0 08) In My Life - 9,0 09) Sam Hall - 8,0 10) Danny Boy 8,5 11) Desperado - 8,0 12) I'm So Lonsome I Could Cry 8,0 13) Tear Stained Letter - 7,5 14) Streets Of Laredo - 7,5 15) We'll Meet Again - 8,0 TOTAL: 8,37 (84/100) Mr. Man in black... Some songs work better than the others, but as a whole, this is a very good farewell album by a great artist.

Favourites: -The Man comes Around - Hurt -I Hung My head -Danny boy -We'll Meet Again Honorable Mention: -Personal Jesus -I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry -Streets Of Laredo I haven't listened to much of Mr. Cash, but this was memorable. It was moving, It was Folksy, Bluesy; the covers were done well. The low points were fairly low although the high points make up for it very well. The one-two combo of the first two tracks absolutely breaks you down, it allows you to experience the rest of the album in a sort of somber/desperate way. 3.5/5*

Great. Brings back memories!

Great studio recording that emphasized the dark, fragile vibe of the tracks and Cash’s vocal performances.

Lovely, croaky old Johnny. No interest in listening to this regularly, but it's clearly very good.

the man comes around hurt bridge over troubled water i hung my head personal jesus in my life tear stained letter

Covers

This album is unquestioningly beautiful and a love letter to many other artists whose tracks feature on the album. Cash has such a distinct style and sound, and even in these sparse renditions, that style drips from every word and chord.

Nothing hits the same as twangy guitar storytelling tunes. Like listen to Johnny Cash and still tell me you hate country music, I dare you. Similar to many other iconic musicians, I have not listened to a full Johnny album until now. There is a reason this man was an icon and I will dive deeper into his discography because of this.

An already exceptional voice gaining character with age. You can feel Johnny and the Rick Rubin experiment winding down.

Hurt Personal Jesus We'll Meet Again

I love Mr Cash, this album was extremely sad though!!

An album of covers done in the Johnny Cash style.

Honestly like listening to a Cormac McCarthy novel

Fantastic album. Love his covers of hurt and personal jesus.

Aw man I’m all out of Cash

Gotta respect it ngl

Lovely covers of classic songs. Johnny sinks his heart into them

Loved this guys since I was a kid. Great album for sure.

The American recordings were closer to a songbook than an album. Varying tracks showcasing either Cashs ability to write or perform. What makes it interesting is the song selection for his covers. A mixture of tracks that influenced him or that he likely influenced. People easily anchor onto his cover of Hurt; however, the two covers that stand out to me are his cover of Stings I hung my head and Hank Williams Im so lonesome (I could cry). Two tracks that nearly bookend his fabled career. There are a few weak spots in the album, no doubt, but it is nice to hear Cash be Cash.

Super nutki 4/5

Cash is a true legend, and maybe singlehandedly kept country music alive in America. That said, he transcended nearly all genres. This album is a terrific compilation of covers for the most part with only a couple exceptions. The tones of the newer cuts are hauntingly beautiful and feel as if Cash knew his time performing was nearly up ... and perhaps his life also. I was left wishing I'd heard "Streets of Laredo" sung by him when he was young ... and hoping I never again heard his rendition of Roberta Flack's "First Time I Ever Saw Your Face". This album seems a fitting tribute to his legend and also a soulful goodbye to his mortal life.

I liked it! He has a cool voice, and I like his guitar. I don't know like any Cash, so good start 👍

What can you say that hasn’t already been said about Johnny Cash. Legend, icon. This album just proves how he can take covers of other songs and make them his own masterpiece.

Several great songs and no bad ones but it maybe could of lost one or 2 of the less great ones.

good album, but it's kinda: \"shut up and play the hits. . or someone else's hits even, idc.\" but there was novelty to it at the time making it hugely popular to the mainstream. you had people who never before listened to johnny cash or NIN telling you how great it all was. but that's not Johnny's fault. he just showed up and killed it, even at 900 years old.

Very nice and chill Johnny Cash album, I enjoyed having this as my background music during the duration of all the songs.

Hearing Johnny with the power of age inspires great pride in being a human being. The song choice is the great songbook of the end of a century.

Did not realise how many BANGERS were on this album! Never listened properly before today, will be listening again. Great bloke great music.

I've never really listened to a lot of Johnny Cash but know he's a legendary country music artist. I was pleasantly surprised with this album. Some interesting/different covers on the album with Danny Boy, Desperado, and In My Life. I prefer a bit more upbeat than Johnny's deep baritone dirges but all in all an enjoyable listen. 7.5/10 (3.75/5)

Great covers of some unexpected songs for him to do.

Great renditions of classic songs. A testament to the legend Johnny Cash was. Enjoy this one from time to time! Standout tracks: The Man Comes Around, Hurt, First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, In My Life, Danny Boy, Desperado, Tear Stained Letter, We’ll Meet Again 8 out of 10

Really interesting stories in each song, too depressing to listen to all in one sitting though

Mostly excellent, I'm not a church going person but the bible verse before the song The Man Comes Around was eerie in the right way for myself. Loved Sam Well but I like when Johnny swears and is animated. Didn't care for Danny Boy, but one review said that a tradition of bad covers was upheld and that was true.

Hia last effort. Songs about death, loss, and regret. Well worth a listen, with the knowledge that JC is not in that full baritone. This is a legendary artist giving us a final album.

A classic with some amazing reworks of well known songs

the fact that this was recorded just a couple years before he died is crazy. super great album through and through. extremely high 4

lots of western music / country elements, melancholic just in the right way, usually talking about tragedy, crime, and yet, passion and deep love within such dark temes

A favorite. I realized I had not listened to the entire album previously. Definitely prefer some songs over others.

Great, very emotional! 8.5/10

A wonderfully bittersweet chapter in the life of Johnny Cash, as his last record released during his lifetime. Lovely record, but not one I would typically listen to. Fave tracks: The Man Comes Around, Hurt, Tear Stained Letter

Beautiful album. Liked it a lot.

https://media.tenor.com/e-XR_5iBO94AAAAM/i%27m-not-okay-crying.gif

Really fantastic production for a Cash record. Objectively it's a very average album, but he has some great iconic covers on here like Hurt and We'll Meet Again that hold a special place in my heart. Overall a great album with some great vibes

Beautiful album from one of our best voices. Some tracks do more for me than others. Not huge into his version of Bridge Over Troubled Water compared to the original. Favorites are The Man Comes Around, Hurt, I Hung My Head, In My Life, and Streets of Laredo.

sweet and unapologetically melancholic. never thought i would have ever liked an album like this. the highest points are heartfelt, sincere and humble. all of this infused with a sense of misery throughout, and a haunting atmosphere (especially when fiona apple vocals appear). also how great the album flows is still astonishing to me, with that really good ending song. i can see lana del rey latest releases being really influenced by him overall. i didn't think i would say this, but maybe i should give a chance to all this americana stuff.

as a teenager hurt was always on mtv, it was one of the first songs i learnt on guitar. i never listened to a johnny cash album until today, and this album being a blend of covers and original work was really the perfect way to dip my toe in. favourite song is the man comes around, but i'll always have a soft spot for hurt

Cash is the dude!

Enjoyed the duets and remakes. Such a classic voice and energy. Very easy listening album with some uncharacteristic Johnny Cash collabs.

Audio production and mixing was great. I kept thinking throughout the album that if this wasn’t Cash, but sounded exactly the same, it wouldn’t have been popular. Hurt is obviously one exception. Still, I’m a fan of Cash, a fan of acoustic focused music, so I enjoyed the playthrough.

Didn’t really think much of Johnny Cash’s ability to carry a tune previously but listening to this album changed my old mind. Can appreciate his talent to tell a story like no other through his unique voice.

Really love Johnny Cash. Especially liked his Beatles cover in this album.

Pretty good.

1.2.24

Love Johnny Cash. He’s a cool dude and I liked his Personal Jesus a lot.

Liked the originals, some of the covers were okay. Some not so much

Really special. Some unexpected covers and classics as well - I think the modern ones are the most effective but will never scoff at anyone paying tribute to the Eagles. A few songs towards the end lost my interest, and Nick Cave’s weird attempt completely took me out of the mood.

Not the most energetic listen, but a fulfilling one. Humble and reflective ballads from an old master. Best song: Hurt

Powerful last album, even though most are covers. Good stuff.

Wunderbar das wieder mal zu hören

favourite songs: personal jesus, sam hall, we’ll meet again really really enjoyable listen, just not quite enough to blow me away and pull it up to a 5

What to say here? The voice is sometimes shaky, even if mostly commanding, though there's no denying it's seen better day. One supposes he always talked his way through many songs. One has to assumes Rubin is behind the dodgier song choices – "Personal Jesus" and NIN, for chrissakes. But the several winners are quite compelling. The Hank Williams and Eagles cuts are a cut above and the closer takes the elegaic feel to near-transcendence. The series should've stopped here, with that cut being his last – an upbeat "We'll Meet Again," what better ending could there have been? The earlier records are comparable, arguably better, but the later ones are much, much worse and feel like exploitation of an aged icon. Rubin should know better, in fact, probably did, but carried on anyway.

Wow love his collection of covers, so emotive and touching, really loved We'll meet again, Danny Boy, and im so lonesome i could cry

Great record by the dying Johnny Cash. This is one of those Rick Rubin specials where they just capture a weird moment and turn it into history haha Obviously the cover of NIN Hurt is kind of the big ticket here but everything else is worth listening to also. Really a great listen.

Very enjoyable!

Solid album. For some reason I wasn't very excited to listen to it based on the name / cover art, but I do really enjoy the first couple of songs. For the most part, not my favorite, but the musicianship is good enough to warrant a four.

Some of these are deeply soulful

Fun but I don't have many opinions on it

Some really good songs some more meh songs

Great cover album, from the spoken word opener right in to the astounding NIN cover of Hurt. Lots of standards, classic cowboy, a little teary and bittersweet to end with "We'll meet again". I sure hope we do, John, I sure hope we do!

I love cover albums and hearing great musicians make songs work in other genres. sadly I don't know many of the originals

I never cared for the "Hurt" cover, but the rest of these songs are pretty great. Highlights are "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," "I Hung My Head", "Streets of Laredo", and "Tear Stained Letter".

Highs and lows. The best songs here are incredible. Some are just ok. There's not a lot of flow or an overall vision to the album, just a collection of songs.

Starts strong then sort of vibes out the rest of the album. His cover of Hurt is so good that the original bad was like "That is his song now" A light 4/5

Fantastic album from start to finish.

this Johnny cash album was awesome. You can really tell he cares about everything he is saying and it’s like a whole story every single one of his songs. Some were a little too slow but you just have to be in the right mood

Man every time I hear Johnny Cash i'm reminded of how emotionally raw his voice is. So unforgettable. May not be my or your favorite genre or type of song, but pay credit where its due. The sound he achieves with his music and voice in this album is filled with grief and knowledge. I gave this a true start to finish listen and its genuinely a beautiful album. Personal Favorites: Give my love to rose, We'll meet again

Distilled beautiful simplicity.

A couple excellent songs, many good songs, and maybe just one stinker. A bit overproduced, and the duets feel like they’re pandering a bit, but the core is still Johnny and his guitar, and you can’t argue with that.

Great and very understated

Jättebra och ibland otroligt originellt på ett mycket simpelt sätt

HOT TAKE ALERT: I prefer the original version of Hurt and I have some qualms about the mixing of Johnny Cash’s version. Other than that, yeah, I really like this album and the sound of his voice at this age is very different. I was thinking about this while listening to the Beatles’ Now and Then, but the way a voice ages is very interesting so to hear him juxtaposed with a young voice like in Bridge Over Troubled Water gives a really compelling contrast.

johnny cash covering personal jesus, could it get any better

One of the funniest things I've ever seen is a friend trying to recall Hurt: "I have an ear worm for a really sad country/rock song. I swear it's a cover of The End by The Doors, but I might be transplanting those lyrics into my memory of this song. It's some old gravely dude and I swear he's crooning about his only friend and it's all about good byes or whatever. I know this is useless but does anyone have suggestions as to what song it might be??????" That song was so unavoidable for a while that I could do without ever hearing it again, and I could really do without Nick Cave's verse on I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry, but I'm still gonna round up to 4. music: appreciated. (⌐o_0)

Tired old voice

This is great listening. Good songs well interpreted.

Great songs. But an album of covers does not always flow. 5 stars songs. But Danny boy and tear stained letter bring it down.

Danny Boy, In My Life brought tears to my eyes

emotional and powerful loved this album yay for johnny

Alternating between yin and yang on each song. One redemptive/empathetic/helping, the next raging/vengeful/spiteful. Reflecting on actions taken/not taken and the impact on one's life. I was slightly surprised by some of the song choices, but Johnny makes them his. Backing vocals on songs were minimal, which is good because I wasn't into most of them. It's sad to know that he was toward the end of his life, but the album ended on an uplifting and joyful note.

A very nice album of covers. Lots of great song choices, too. That’s all I really have to say. Just a good album all around. 8/10 Top 5: 1. Hurt 2. We’ll Meet Again 3. In My Life 4. Bridge Over Troubled Water 5. The Man Comes Around

Amazing. The sound is astonishing, beautiful, clean and simple. A great listening and an excellent way to spend a cozy hour.

Classic but didn't really like all the covers

Almost made me cry in public, 8/10

Not bad. The song "Hurt" is awesome.

Part of me wanted to write this off as a vain retrospective of Cash’s life and career. I always thought this album was somewhat overrated. Yes, it’s amazing that Cash put an album like this together for his sixty seventh (!!) album. Yes, his interpretations of a broad range of artists are impressive. But is someone really going to tell me his versions of In My Life, Bridge Over Troubled Water or even Personal Jesus shed some new light on those classics? He even recycled some of his own songs. But then I realized the whole point was that this IS a vain retrospective, captured as he was nearing the end, something he must’ve known given the starts and stops of these sessions. The covers are autobiographical, he’s telling his story through words others have written, but which in many cases he has now taken as his own. When you view it in that light, it does make you reconsider the value and meaning that can be derived from a song, and that wrinkle is the charm of this old man’s collection.

Better than i expected. never thought Cash would be my style of music.

Back to back yeehaw albums. Do these count as yeehaw albums? They make me feel like I want to ride a horse so I guess so. Love the last song.

Great album of other people's songs

Opening the album with "The Man Comes Around" was great - especially with that spoken word intro that slowly fades into the actual song. "Hurt" is, of course, one of the most incredible songs I will have ever listened to on so many levels. "Give My Love To Rose" is just Me and Bobby McGee? "In My Life" is a Beatles cover I didn't know I needed in my life.

10/12/23. Emotional album. Made me appreciate the key of A Major as a tool to use for melancholy messages.

Revisiting this melancholy, cover-heavy album that includes a few incredible tracks such as "The Man Comes Around" and "Give My Love To Rose", both written by Cash, the later being a triumphant self-cover almost fifty years after the original recording. At seventy years old, Cash's voice has a fragile aspect, which paired with the selected songs, feels like a somber, smiling goodbye, and was released less than a year before his death. Much respect.

Not my fave Rick Rubin Johnny Cash album, but Hurt is a new classic, and his voice can add soul to any cover.

soothing

Excellent album that contains some of very emotionally gripping songs. Not all songs are hits but still a very solid album in my opinion. I was already familliar with the album and will definitely listen to it some more.

Always thought these were a cash grab (no pun intended) but they’re still pretty great. Still prefer the NIN version of Hurt over this one and I know I’m in the minority.

Would be 5 stars if it wasn’t an album full of covers but they are extremely well done

Moving lyricism matched with Strong adduction., Looking forward to listening more. Takeaways – the quality of your voice matters less than the singularity of your vision and what you want to talk about.

Hurt and we will meet again are very great songs the rest of the songs are alright, hung my head, desperado, and Sam hall are pretty good too.

I’m a sucker for Johnny. Some of his prime era albums would be five stars for me. I really enjoy this record, but it is ultimately a covers album. His voice is certainly worse for wear, although he still uses it for great effect. When it hits, it hits hard, but the rest is just kind of remembering how great Johnny Cash was back in his day. I’m glad he made these records though, it has so much more heart than most shit guys his age record. Most aging musicians really just write and record low energy slop, it’s nice to hear someone old that’s still keyed into good music. It should be noted there is egregious auto tone all over the place. Some notes sound so robotic it’s crazy.

When this album hits, it’s fantastic. There are a couple covers that are just meh in my opinion. Given the context of this album it’s hard not to get chills for some of these tracks

This is so good. Cash’s voice is awful tbh but somehow it works and is even really affecting. The genius of Rick Rubin perhaps. A classic

Johnny Cash’s final album has a certain poignancy. His voice is deep and gravelly and he sings with a conviction and bitter sweetness that he has earned. The arrangements are sparse making the listener hang onto his every word. There are some weird moments in terms of production that take away from the intimacy of the album, but overall, it is a hard hitting and deeply resonant record.

Amazing voice ! I never really listened to Johnny Cash, outside of his Hurt cover, but this album was great !

Album 3 of 1001 Favorite song(s): In My Life, Danny Boy Johnny Cash is a legend in the music industry. Nothing like just a man and a guitar. There is some production in this album with organ and other various instruments as well as it mainly being covers but the way that he sings gives them such a heartfelt texture. Overall I liked the album, definitely something to revisit maybe 30 years from now.

That Nick Cave duet was really something

La voix est clairement mise en évidence. M’a beaucoup émue. Je vais le réécouter, c’est certain.

Poignant, beautiful album, some wonderful interpretations of a diverse mix of songs. Johnny Cash's deep, cracked voice is just right for tracks like Hurt and his version of Bridge over troubled waters. Doesn't work all the time - We'll meet again is forgettable. But a great album overall

The man comes around is prime Johnny cash and prime Johnny cash reminds me of when country was music for outlaws and rebels. Cash was a well-known prison abolitionist and that shows up on the man comes around in give my love to rose, a song about a man who’s rotted his life away behind bars and finally gets out only to die and ask cash to share his love with his fiancé. Nowadays country music is littered with boot-lickers who fly private and pretend they can relate to the working class. What changed, you ask? My theory is 9/11. The U.S. government masterfully directed it’s peoples attention to terrorist groups, drugs and gangs. There was no longer a consensus of people uniting under music that critiqued the music dehumanizing institution in America, instead we started rejoicing in being American, which now means drinking beer, polishing your truck and celebrating “small town values”.

I read a review of this that referred to it as a victory lap and I can't shake that sentiment. I loved it. 4.5/5

It's a great final album from The Man in Black. Lots of covers on this but I think the two best songs are the opening and closing songs which are both originals. Favorite Songs: The Man Comes Around, We'll Meet Again Least Favorite Songs: Danny Boy, Sam Hall, Tear Stained Letter

I don't know what it is about his voice, the charisma is undeniable. We give him a lot of slack because he's an old guy with a long track record, so I doubt anyone but him could get away with the languid pace of some of these songs. But as he takes advantage of that slack he makes good use of it.

Late era Cash with some great covers. Despite his age his voice is still impressive and a lot of this stripped down album evokes heavy emotion. Standouts are "Hurt" and "I Hung My Head".

an extremely strong album especially the Beatles cover song

Had only heard Hurt and I Hang My Head before today. Not as somber as the album art would make you think. Desperado and Tear Stained Letter were my favorites.

Johnny cash’s rasply vocals against the acoustic guitar work very well. Love the covers

Solid album. It obviously takes on a different meaning having been released so close to his death. Actually, this album seems so geared towards that idea it almost comes across as exploitative. But the songs are so good.

Had forgotten how many great songs are on this album. I hate you one and all, damn your eyes!

Genres: Folk, folk rock, country, Americana, Southern gothic Formed: Mid 1950’s Run time: 15 songs, 52 min, 3 sec The 67th and final studio album by Johnny Cash. 67 albums is quite a remarkable feat to achieve. This album is sombre and melancholic, a style that Cash will always be associated with. The general theme of the album is lifes’ struggles, love and loss. Cash’s style, like his voice, is unique. He includes many covers and makes each and everyone his own. I think many consider his cover of “Hurt” by Nine Inch Nails better than the original. Spotify: Least popular song: >3.6M Most popular song: >552M plays. "The Man Comes Around" is about the second coming of Jesus. “Hurt” is a cover of the song by rock band Nine Inch Nails. The song is about the struggle of addiction and its unyielding grip on the addict. "Give My Love to Rose" is about a man who has been freed from prison. He accepts what he has done and the consequences. He obviously regrets the effect of his absence on his wife and child. He doesn’t make it home and while dying asks a stranger to "Give My Love to Rose", his wife. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" is a cover of the song by Simon & Garfunkel. It is about adversity. The bridge is a metaphor for someone helping the person in difficulty. “I Hung My Head” is a tale about the shame felt for (accidently) killing someone and the effects and consequences of that single action. “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face” is a cover of the 1957 folk song written by British political singer-songwriter Ewan MacColl for Peggy Seeger (his then mistress, later wife). The song is best known for the 1972 version by Roberta Flack. The song is about the intense feelings felt in the first flush of love. "Personal Jesus" is a cover of the 1989 song by English electronic music band Depeche Mode. The song is about mankind's need for a spiritual connection to something bigger. “In My Life” is a cover of the 1965 Beatles song. It is about love and how it shapes all aspects of our lives. “Sam Hall” is an old English folk song about an unapologetic man called Sam Hall, who is hanged for murder. “Danny Boy” is a 1910 song by Frederic Weatherly, sung to the tune of the Irish melody "Londonderry Air" in 1913. The song is about a father addressing his son about love and loss before he leaves home. "Desperado" (with Don Henley) is a cover of the 1973 song by American rock band the Eagles. The song is about a hard living man. The lyrics are a plea for him to reform before it's too late. “I'm so Lonesome I Could Cry” is a cover of the 1949 song written and recorded by American country singer-songwriter Hank Williams. The song is about the protagonist's deep despair and loneliness. I will always associate this song with Elvis. I believe Cash’s version conveys the despair better than anyone else's. "Tear Stained Letter" is about a man planning to write a letter to his soon to be ex. It tells of the loss and betrayal feels and the love he still carries. He means to convey his feelings and hopes she feels regret for his ill-treatment. “Street Of Laredo” is a traditional ballad about a dying cowboy reminiscing about his life. It is a melancholy reflection on his life, loves and mistakes made. “We'll Meet Again" is a cover of the 1939 song by English singer Vera Lynn (music and lyrics by English songwriters Ross Parker and Hughie Charles). We all know this song. The song is an optimistic tale of reunion to be had in the future. The song declares that the meeting will take place in an unknown place and time. I’ve always assumed the reunion referred to meeting in the afterlife, which contrasts to the jolly optimistic feel of the song. I didn’t like “We'll Meet Again" and I suspect it was added knowing it would be his last album. If that wasn’t the case then it was an amazing coincidence. Fantastically talented artist and an amazing album. Listen Again?: Yes and I’ll try some of his other albums. My Rating: ****

His covers may be worse than their respective originals, but they aren't bad. Johnny Cash's brand of country sure is among the most charming ones. Great album.

There's some belters on here, but its not all great

A really good album overall. And of course Hurt is an all time great cover.

Hay algunas excelentes y otras no tanto, pero se disfruta siempre.

bué chill, sombrio melhor musica: the man comes around/ we'll meet again

Breathtaking. Great stories in great songs of one of the greatest voices of all time. His voice was so good when he was old. 4.5/5.

Incredibly easy to listen to. Cash has an incredible voice and there is something so beautifully simple about this album. Hurt is one of my favourite songs released in my lifetime anyway but there were more gems on this album

shockingly good for an album of covers has hurt on it

That was an amazing album of so many classics & passionately sung.

There's a familiarity bias to Hurt & I Hung My Head. Some adaptations felt twee, others rousing. Would I listen again? Probably

Great vocals, great tunes. Of course the background of his impending death adds weight to the emotion, but a stunning album regardless.

Masterful collaboration between Cash and Rubin

Loved it back in 2003, has suffered a little from becoming too familiar but still some great stand-out moments

“Hurt” introduced a whole new generation to the man in black, and there are some other great takes on unexpected songs on “The Man Comes Around.”

I love when covers make the song something totally different. This is the case for most of the covers on this album. Hurt is a real standout. But Personal Jesus also stands out for just how different it is from the original.

7/15, 47%

Eigenlijk haat ik alles wat ook maar een beetje op country lijkt, maar wat staan er briljante dingen op dit album. Geweldige sfeer en stem!

This man makes me feel things. Best track is, of course, Hurt.

An impressive collection of older and more “current” songs by Cash himself and other artists. Though his voice never was very melodious, the wear of age and time has created an emotional quality that can’t be denied. Definitely worth a second listen and more. A great “first” album on this list to listen to. -CBT

Stirring and filled with emotion, it was quite something to hear, late career Cash making such potent music. Song choice is excellent (with a few exceptions) and Hurt is a brilliant, inspired cover.

Great tracks

Let's not bury the lead here: This recording of "Hurt" is one of the most poignant, emotional, impactful music ever made because of the song, the lyrics, the interpretation, but most of all because of who Cash is. Anyone else could not make this song do what it is doing. It is insane and a case study in music in itself. The rest of this album does not reach the height of "Hurt," but neither does almost anything else I've ever heard. Cash is like Elvis - almost a mythic persona . This album belongs on this list because of "Hurt;" it just must be heard by everyone. The other songs are good, and this whole album makes you go, why don't I just pick up a guitar - look at what you can do with one of those - sounds pretty easy on here! A few of the songs don't really soar that high, mostly the other covers like In My Life, Bridge Over Troubled Water, and Desperado. Still, Hurt alone makes this essential listening.

This guy was rock and roll before it was even a thing and this album is him taking modern rock songs and making them BETTER. Bought the CD when it came out. Amazing.

Really good! Hurt is a classic. Really liked his version of Personal Jesus. I didn't care for Danny Boy as I think that song should be sung by a tenor. Despite that, Johnny Cash is a legend and this is a solid recording.

Haven’t listened to too much cash besides the hits. This was a great album. His age adds a lot to his voice. Top picks: hurt and I hung my head

First Johnny Cash album I ever listened to and bought.

So his 67th and final album, and no surprise he reprised old tracks and covered othersb including 2 of his most played tracks. Instantly recognisable, instant classic, one star lost for being single paced

4.5 stars and a 6 for hurt - Cash's version of that amazing song is other-worldly. Truly inspired.

Mostly filled with covers but it's a fine parting gift from the Man in Black in his final years.

Thanks for the existential dread, Johnny.

The Man Comes Around, Hurt, Personal Jesus, In My Life, Danny Boy, I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry (same), Tear Stained Letter and We’ll Meet Again. Classic voice. A couple eh songs. Some great covers.

the man comes around, hurt, bridge over troubled water, i hung my head, we'll meet again. the other songs were ok

Really good, powerful. Got a bit teary-eyed at the end. Really felt the emotions from the stories told. Liked the spoken word parts from the first song. Smiled a bit whenever he voiced an "h" before a "w". + Hurt + Give My Love To Rose + Danny Boy + Personal Jesus + We'll Meet Again

Not gonna lie, I'm mostly here for the first two songs. But the whole thing is still pretty damn good.

A continuation of The Man In Black's return to essential relevance. And it has "Hurt".

Beautiful album. 4/5

HL: "Hurt", "Personal Jesus", "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "In My Life", "Give My Love to Rose", "I'm So Lonesome I Could Cry" Though I agree that it's a great cover, I picked up on Rick Rubin's clipping during "Hurt" and got a little annoyed that he produced this album Love it but it’s a drag April 6, 2023

I enjoyed this a surprising amount. Before I thought JC was ring of fire and that's it, but this was a lot more than that.

Legendary, takes a bunch of songs and made them undeniably his, what a dude

The good stuff here is absolutely incredible, but there's a fair bit of unmemorable filler in my opinion. Cash's Blackstar is emotional and heartbreaking at points, but a glorious swansong. A cold look back at one's life and what will come next. 01/04/23

Very good, unique and some great parts

It might be a bit of cliche, but "Hurt", together with "All Along the Watchtower" by Jimi Hendrix are the best covers in the history of contemporary music. I don't even like Nine Inch Nails, but what Johnny Cash has done with this song is unbelievable. All the pure emotions just flowing out of the song, melancholy and sadness, just a tad of optimism at the end, and all of that sprinkled with a frail voice of Johnny makes it one of my favourite song of all time. Most of the album is being kept in the same style, with few old-style country songs here and there. His rendition of "Personal Jesus" is also very good. Old Johnny has an ability to add another layer of emotions to any song, even if that's a straightforward pop song. In summary - great covers, okay country original songs. A very solid 4.

Awesome album

Johnny's voice on this album is epic!

Such a great parting album. Excellent production. He's old here and his voice isn't its strongest but it's really a beautiful thing

American IV: The Man Comes Around is the 67th album by Johnny Cash - the fourth in his American series. It was the last album released during his lifetime, and is considered to contain the finest work of his late life. It was also the first non-compilation album of his that was certified gold and platinum since the early 70's, and won Album of the Year at the 2003 CMA's. The folk rock album is mostly cover songs of either Cash's own music or other popular songs. For example, "Hurt" was a beautifully meaningful cover of a song by Trent Reznor of Nine Inch Nails originally written in 1994, but the song is now more associated with Cash. American IV was a joy to listen to in its entirety. I've heard some of the popular songs from this album before and loved them, but it's great to hear all these tracks in one listen. This critically acclaimed album should be given a listen by anyone and everyone. Beautiful, thought-provoking, and fun are how I would describe this album. RIP Johnny Cash.

This album is a beautiful mix of covers and original songs. I love elegiac feeling I get from this album. “Hurt” is probably the best cover of all time.

And behold! A pale horse - And his name that sat on him was death... and hell followed with him.

Hurt, Give my love to Rose & Personal Jesus are great The rest is ok Rubin should have reduced some of the filler A wonderful goodbye from a legend, nonetheless

Some interesting covers await you, dear listener. Johnny Cash has a voice that will forever be distinguishable and the emotions transcend the music

Not a relistenable one, but a great one-time experience (and an awesome set of song to be covered)

Classic Cash, lots of respect for this album.

I wouldn't have choen this necessarily but I was surprised by how much I enjoyed all the songs; some covers very unexpected, some long forgotten tunes. All in all 4*

Actually I thought some of it was cringeworthly overly sentimental but it was the album that got me into JC so...

Johnny Cash covering Depeche Mode? Yes please.

Johnny Cash has an amazing voice and these covers are gorgeous.

These covers are fascinating. Johnny Cash lends a humongous gravity to each one.

Gorgeous. Heartfelt, beautifully recorded, and such a wonderful collection of great songs.

Great album of classic Johnny cash songs like hurt and covers like personal Jesus and bridge over troubled water

Les albums de mecs mourants c'est toujours sympa pour bien commencer la journée (jpp)

ca brise un peu le coeur

Dark trudgy folk

I didn't like the other Johnny cash album on this list, but somehow this one really hit home for me. The hurt cover is beautiful, and although most of the songs are covers it doesn't feel lazy. The fact he died a year after releasing this makes it pretty sad though

With such an awesome voice, there is not much more you need than an acoustic guitar. I really liked it, but for the covers I liked the original songs better

Amazing voice, good covers

Not really a fan of country but I’m sure it was a good album

Somehow a classic. In spite of the monotone speak-singing, knowing where he was at that point in his life, this is absolute dark, somber excellence. Cover songs somehow made his own when he uses them as a personal reflection.

8/10. A pretty solid piece of work. Some of the covers weren't spectacular, but some were quite good, and I liked the original stuff.
