Reviews (page 6 of 13)

This album is entirely awesome and entirely too long. Still funky enough for a 4 tho.

I liked The Love Below a bit better but both albums have their moments.

GhettoMusick The Way You Move Prototype Hey Ya! Roses

Really cool. Really fun. Really too long.

Speakerboxxx maybe but hey ya is the standout

An interesting choice. Risky move. I listened to this a lot when it first came out. Speakerboxxx A great representation of music at the time and Southern hip hop. Big Boi's flow does just that, flows. Some fun guest's like Ludacris and lil John. I like GhettoMusic. The Way You Move, great to dance to. Last Call is fun. As for The Love Below it can feel a bit all over the place, but it was fresh and interesting at the time. The composition on Spread, Hey Ya (before it got over played) was perfect pop and got over played for a reason, Roses, Take off Your Cool. Perhaps a little over indulgent at times, a bit surreal and some awkward tracks. But some fun music.

Sometimes I think the album selections aren’t so random. Go back and look at my history you’ll see that just yesterday I was handed OutKast’s previous album “Stankonia.” You’ll also see that I didn’t exactly give it a favorable review. You’ll forgive me if I think this project gets a mind of its own sometimes. The good news is, I liked this a lot more, even if it had an absolutely excessive runtime. Wikipedia describes this as two solo albums released as a double album. Which is a little annoying because one of them is so much better than the other. Andre 3000 is a creative genius and I won’t be told otherwise. The fact that he was beholden to a, by comparison (don’t come after me, I’m not saying he’s bad) average artist in the form of Big Boi is kind of a drag. Speakerboxxx is a really creative concept. It’s like its own radio station or something. The problem is that it only plays one genre and a lot of the songs are similar to each other. The good stuff is actually pretty great, but it’s lost in a bunch of average tracks. The Love Below…damn. What a confluence of ideas and genre. So many different combinations of sound and mood. It flows so easily from one to the next and it all exists on the same sonic level. Jazz, funk, hip hop, rap, rock, soul, R&B - it’s all here and it’s all amazing. The exploration and combining of genres is downright experimental at times and those experiments are largely successes. That’s not something I would’ve said about “Stankonia.” At all. The remix/interpolation of “My Favorite Things”?!?! What!?! Too good. I respect the hell out of this half of the album and of Andre for creating it. Only thing I’d change is drop the interludes and make better use of Norah Jones. Other than that it’s a masterpiece. Now the tricky part - a rating. I’m gonna do this individually and the average them out. If this was just Speakerboxxx, it would get three stars. If it was just The Love Below, it would get five. Average that out and you get four. Four stars. I wish I could give them individual scores. Hell I wish these were released separately. But here we are. Four stars. Standout Tracks: GhettoMusick, Bowtie, the Rooster, Bust, Church | The Love Below (Intro), Love Hater, Happy Valentine’s Day, Hey Ya!, Roses, My Favorite Things, Take Off Your Cool

I prefer The Love Below over Speakerboxxx, but enjoyed both. 4/5

Some really killer hits mixed with some filler, but when it slaps, it slaps.

A classic concept album reflecting the two sides of masculinity: being cool and being pathetically horny

It's like a southern hip hop, jazz, and dance variety show about the tribulations of love.

Such a great Album! 4.5/5.0 if it was not +2h it could be a 5 star album. B-Side def my favourite side but booth are very strong.

Loving the background beat in Ghetto Musick. This album is ridiculously long.

The love below carries speakerboxxx imo but the love below wouldn’t be what it is without speakerbox . Prob like. 3.7 but rating up

One half is better than the other, I'll let you guess which one. 4+

Rounding up

Pretty complete

Very good but too long!

86/100

#1 Looks like we're going to start with an Outkast album I haven't heard, and it's one of their best! Rating: 3.5 Date: 06/06/24 Wow that was great, I love how many different instruments and styles are incorporated into this. The album could hold its own instrumentally but the vocal performances just push it even higher. The tracks with Killer Mike especially are amazing. Really seeing the appeal even more for Killer Mike although I already love Run the Jewels. This was great.

Two albums for the price of one. Speakerboxxx is definably a better album. Both have great flow and theming and maybe it wasn't fair to Andre that he had to go after Big's whole album. That said, putting Hey Ya directly into Roses is a big statement

Andre 3000 album is better but enjoy both thoroughly.

I think I’ve only listened to some of Stankonia, and obviously Hey Ya which I remember being EVERYWHERE in 2003. This album is 2 hours long which is HOOO BOY. My first reaction to GhettoMusick is my god this is fun. I’m really nostalgic for that early 2000s southern hip hop sound. Really love the vibe on this so far, smooth and catchy and just feels good. Big Boi is really good too. 6 tracks in and every real song has been incredible, all for different reasons, all of which have something unique that sets them apart while still seeming like a part of the same album. My god this is amazing Killer Mike shows up and is just as good back then as he is today with RTJ. CHURCH, WHAT THE HELL THATS AMAZING

Somewhere in this album are all the elements of a five, but I think there is just a little too much of it. The production is incredible front to back but the rapping was disappointing. I can respect them wanting to do their own things but I think the real talent of this group comes from their collaboration. I think it’s telling that one of my favorites songs growing up off this album was roses which was one of the only ones they collaborated on. And the interludes. There were far too many interludes. If they cut some of the chaff I would have given this a five easy.

拽,放纵,hiphop

2 for 1! the skits are actually pretty funny, normally not a fan of those but these were good enough.

🎧A sprawling, wildly ambitious pair of statements from Big Boi and Andre 3000. Outkast in their “fuck it/anything goes” empirical phase. The Love Below has some bangers and I appreciate the adventurous p-funk/Prince/jazz kick Andre was on, but I think I prefer Superboxxx.

Gear: Sony WF-1000XM4 Artwork: 🗑️ Mix: 💎 Musik: 🔊/🃏 Wertung: 🌓🌓🌓🌓/5

After getting really behind and playing catch-up all week whilst dealing with life admin on steroids I finally thought I was on track. And then an album the length of FOUR albums comes up. I was awash with dismay - I knew there were some great songs on here but did I really have 2.5 hours to listen. It’s taken me about 2.5 days to get here. It is full of five star bangers and was great in instalments but boy it’s long.

Damn. This thing is a beast. There's so much to enjoy here. OK, the second half isn't as strong as the first, but even there it has some timeless gems. I guess I can't go the whole 5-star on it, at least not today. But I'll definitely be returning to this one. Also, it's nice hearing Killer Mike.

I remember this one quite well from my youth. I've listened to OutKast's entire discography up to and including "Speakerboxx/The Love Below" and I must admit that this is not my favorite of the bunch. Not to say that's it's a bad (double) album by any means, I mean it's one of OutKast's more creative works and I still get a lot of the track's beats & samples stuck in my head from time to time. With any double album, you obviously have to split it into two and in this case, you have to look at both halves of OutKast. With Big Boi's "Speakerboxx", you've got a noticeable southern hip-hop sound (much like most of OutKast's previous work) featuring many regional collaborators as well. Rooted within is some progressive and socially aware content matter like religion and politics. Then you have Andre 3000's "The Love Below", which is a more tender, jazzy, funky pop sound concentrated on well... love! Andre 3000 really flexes his creative juices here too, opting to showcase his singing over his familiar rapping "voice". When comparing the two, I prefer "Speakerboxx" because that kind of hip-hop sound was what drew me into OutKast in the first place. "The Love Below" feels like too long of a comedown and gets to be a little much in its lovey-dovey-ness. Though it's really interesting hearing the mammoth hits like "Hey Ya" and "Roses" within the context of "The Love Below", as both are conveniently smacked together. A bloated album for sure (11 interludes?) but always a worthy listen. I'd also implore everyone to check out OutKast's prior work if they want know why OutKast was such a big player in the southern hip-hop scene. I'd assume "Stankonia" will appear later in this list for me, but can't speak for the others.

An interesting take

Hey Ya is NOT the only banger on this album. A few skips here and there, but if you like the OutKast style beyond the titular tracks, it's a pretty solid listen.

Didn't hold up as id imagined, especially Love Below which was overly long and has some wasted space. Random vampire love songs?

speakerboxxx 3.5 the love below 4.25

At the beginning of this, and during multiple moments throughout, I thought this was an easy five-star album. But it overstayed its welcome by the end. Loved it! Would have loved a bit more editing, though. I think it would have been better if it was under 2 hours, and I think it could have gotten there pretty easily.

This dual album does indeed belong on this list. Big Boi and Andre 3000 are the hip hop/funk duo that the early 00's needed. It can be argued that they were instrumental in making rap and funk part of the mainstream by making the genres fun again.

This album is... sprawling. Compared to the first three outKast albums, it is far more indulgent and the moments of pure head nodding bliss are farther between. But they do come up with some bops here and Andre 3000's contributions are pretty interesting. A keeper that will probably reveal more on further listens.

Crazy enough to be cool!

Great album. Quality songs and writing. I think I enjoyed the Speakerboxx album a bit better, but overall I had fun listening to it. It gets 4 stars because it was a really long slog to listen to this as a whole. If they would’ve cut 5 songs overall, it would’ve the perfect album for me

Weird listening to a double album which is literally that - not just an extra disc, but two distinct albums stuck together. An interesting concept that I don't think many other groups or duos could pull off. Like other OutKast albums I've heard before, I thought this was very good, but something I'm unlikely to listen to in full again just due to how long the album is. Despite The Love Below having the hits on it, I definitely preferred Speakerboxxx as an individual album. Fav tracks (Speakerboxxx): GhettoMusick, Tomb of the Boom Fav tracks (The Love Below): Roses, Take Off Your Cool

I’m just gonna say this is a 4/5. So much stuff and different ideas. Some good in there but wish it was more gelled.

Strictly based on the presence of absolute bangers, this album is an Auto 4. Speakerboxxx itself is a ghetto-rap masterpiece. Big Boi lays down some solid bars and the exceptional mixing propels the music forward. As always Andre exhibits his creative side on The Love Below, and we get some good and not so good. The length of the double Lp leaves some questionable gaps in otherwise brilliant songs, but they let the magic consume them and put out a crowd pleaser with tracks that will define a generations rap exposure.

There's just something about an album that came out the year you turned 21... Lots of memories. And I was surprised by how many different styles they sampled.

Pretty good stuff. Not as entertaining as Stankonia

Great album. Forgot that it is technically two albums released as one.

The interludes get annoying and Speakerboxxx is definitely the better of the two discs but it's a pretty solid 4 stars. Last Call is a banger

Not a new album to me. But historically a great one. Though I might prefer Stankonia

there are too many songs on here to go one-by-one so i'll try to summarize each half instead. my hip hop vocabularly is painfully shallow speakerboxx - not a single miss. i havent felt a rap album click like this has in forever. every track has energy, emotion, drama, and eclectic production. big boi is meditative, thoughtful, bombastic, you name it. this is a performance through and through. i love how he will fuck with the tempo during his rapping, it's very reminiscent of how the best guitar solos arent just played on the beat but they hold or insert extra notes to give effect. "w-a-r-uh, there will be no tomorrow" is an unbelievable rhyme lol. tomb of the boom's rhythm section is unlike anything else you'll hear in the mainstream and that synth. killer mike's features on this rock so much, jay z has one of his best features (i cannot describe how much better he is here than when he shows up on kanye stuff), ludacris and lil john deliver the exact hype you'd want. i said it at the start but there isn't a miss on speakerboxx. the love below - the first half of love below centers on the theme of love (Shocking). everyone who's spent a little time on lyrics websites has had the "hey ya is actually a sad song sung happily" moment and it makes total sense now in the context of this album. andre is a player who leans into the one night stand culture until he finds a woman he really loves. hey ya comes at the moment when this new relationship falls apart under stress ("thank god for mom and dad for sticking together cuz we don't know how"), and the follow up of roses is the diss track we all have wanted to write about our ex immediately after a break-up. andre is unable to escape his cupid image from earlier in the album. i might be biased but i think love below hits its stride at hey ya. maybe it's a grower but i don't think i cared a crazy amount for the rest of the love below. speakerboxx had an infectious energy and that's totally the opposite of what you get from andre. the songwriting is interesting and the production takes you all over the place (just like disc 1) but i dont think it has the hooks of speakerboxx. of course its not meant to be that way, i just have a hard time considering it as fondly and i already consider disc 1 after one listen. this is definitely something i will come back to though, to revisit the things i loved on disc 1 and discover more to love about disc 2.

Mjög margt goodshi á þessum plötum. Aftur á móti fannst mér 50% vera bara ok. En við erum líka að tala um 2 klst +. Þeir eru alltaf fesskir og hreinir strákarnir.

Stórmerkileg plata/plötur. Fyrst mjög fín hiphop plata frá BigBoi sem flaut mjög fínt í gegn með rapslögurum eins og Ghettomusick. Síðan allskonar skemmtileg tilraunamennska frá André 3000 undir augljósum Prince áhrifum, þar til risasmellurinn HeyYa skellur allt í einu á manni. Virkilega skemmtilegt stöff.

So much range, it almost feels like you’re listening to the radio. This definitely exceeds expectations. Could do with fewer bitches and hos. But musically, this is outstanding.

Really good, but way too long.

Skits, far far too long The first side is very decent but side two is great. Pink & Blue is great. I want to give 4 but the only issue is that any time I come back to it, I feel like I've never heard most of it

Smart, funky and gleefully weird. Plays with a lot of genres and has a bit of a retro vibe, but manages to sound really fresh. I don't know if I could handle a double album by a lot of hip hop artists, but Outkast was really made for this medium. They have so many ideas and creative impulses to explore and they have a rich sound that welcomes extended listening. They also have an extremely impressive bench of talented artists working on these songs with them that just adds to the album's depth. Fave Songs: Hey Ya!, Church, Bowtie, Dracula's Wedding, Flip Flop Rock, Bamboo, The Way You Move, Knowing, She Lives in My Lap, Happy Valentine's Day

Rought start to the record that gasn’t held up at all. First decently aged song is Bowtie, with that fun Outkast style. The Way You Move sounds like a 2000s club banger of a club I’d stay far away from. I wish they developed the hushed rap further. Love the maximalist beat on The Rooster. Outkast got on the Rock-Rap train with Bust. I’m not a fan of the genre but this was executed well. War is an amazing song with amazing lyricism. Best song so far, sadly still relevant. Church is an okay song. Gospel addition is good. Tomb of the Boom is very 2000s as well but is not a bad track. Knowing has a dark, gangster beat with good lyricism. Flip Flop Rock has very good Andre 3K lyrics that outshine Jay-Z on this track. Reset is a smooth song with good rap over it. It just is not my style of song. Last Call has Lil Jon screaming all over the 200s beat. Not the best song. Second half of the album has aged better. Love Hater is okay. Happy Valentines Day lacks rap. Spread features better rap and is a better song overall. Interludes are mega cringe. Prototype sounds like music to a porn movie. She Live in my Lap is also not the best. Heya and Roses are so good they give the whole album +1. Literally. Back to mid songs with Behold a Lady. Pink & Blue manages to weave a very pleasing soundscape. Love In War is a decent song as well. She’s Alive is a slower, mellow song, with a weak falsetto. Dracula’s Wedding has a fun and funky beat with good rap in a theme. My Favourite Things speeds up and adds nice drums to the famous song. Very jazzy, amazing song. Take Off Your Cool is an amazing song. I’m loving the experimentation they are doing. Vibrate is a very strong song as well. Albums ends strongly with A Life In The Day Of Benjamin Andre. Not a bad album, first half has aged poorly. Not Oukasts strongest record but some absolute pelters save it. Second half is definitely stronger. 4/5

They managed to make a hip hop song a staple at every white couple's wedding reception and that is a feat in itself.

It's a classic for a reason.

Although it is definitely not my favorite album from this spectacular duo, it is an OutKast album. This double album confused me at first, but it grew on me over time. Big Boi’s side of the album, “SpeakerBoxxx”, is full of great tracks and features from Jay Z, Ludacris, Killer Mike, etc. For me personally, it outweighs Andre 3K’s side of the album, “Love Below”. “Love Below” has some great songs. But I also think it has a lot of extra blubber, and some of the songs are dragged out. Nonetheless, this album is as popular as it is in the music community for a reason, and I find myself going to back to this album frequently.

7.5/10 No excuse for an album being 2+ hours, it is inevitable that the score will go down due to there being more filler/fat. If it is 2 solo albums, release them as such! Speakerboxxx: more straight-up hip hop. Nice. Frenetic, energetic, lots of energy. Great features from Killer Mike in particular. Keeps up the pace, if you don't like a song then another will be along shortly. Best: GhettoMusick The Love Below: a swerve mostly away from Hip Hop towards funk, pop, Jazz. He clearly listened to Prince, and Childish Gambino clearly listened to this. Production on this half of the allbum is spot on. A breakbeats version of "These are a few of my favorite things"?! Hey Ya, with time apart, remains a banger. Best: Prototype

Tgis is a great album. A bit long and filled with interludes is you play all 40 tracks. But still stands up. Not my favorite by them, but they have great albums all around

Sprawling and dynamic and almost absurdly creative. Feels like a milestone hip-hop record and holds up well. One finds it encouraging that Andre just keeps getting weirder and weirder.

I like the sound. Favorite tracks: - Hey Ya! - The rest are pretty good too, I like the vibe.

Long album(s) but still a great creative flex.

Great album, it drags for too long, but is has a wide diversity of amazing songs full of feeling and vibes.

Surprisingly good

I just want to use this space to say that not only is this album great, but so are the rest of OutKast's entire catalog (well maybe not Idlewild). I encourage yall to listen to Aquemini, that is one of their best albums, but one of the greatest albums of all time.

It's a bit long but really good album. Lots of timeless songs that could still come out today and have the same cultural impact

Despite the length, a great hip hop record

Oh my God, Becky! It is so big! Has several of my favourite Outkast tracks

Its long, weird and good

I have positive memories of this album so was excited to see it. I was more familiar with Speakerboxx than The Love Below, although the second was the better part, I think. (Plus definitely had the better-known tracks). Excellent concept album(a). Listens: 1 Fave Track: Ghettomusick, Hey Ya, Behold A Lady, Love In War Rating: 4

It is actually a lot to listen to but it is great. Not every song is a hit but it’s a diverse rap record which I liked.

Every time I try to listen to Speakerboxxx, I’m left disappointed. It has a few gems but it’s really just not that good. The Love Below, on the other hand is god damned brilliant and brings back such great memories of life around when this came out. OutKast are just so prolific and while it’s unfortunate that Big Boy doesn’t come across as creative or musically talented as Andre because of this dual flavored double album, one can simply re-listen to the myriad of amazing Albums that came before.

This is obviously a fantastic album. Speaerboxxx alone would be one of the best rap records of the 2000s and the love below is truly one of a kind. I do feel a little bad for Big Boi though. "his" part of the combo is full of everyone else rapping verses including Andre, but Big Boi has almost no presence on the love below. It's like OutKast put out a record and 3stacks added his own record to the same package.

ziemlich Cool!!!

Love it, two artists that are both amazing putting together a double album with both styles that fit together, it's just beautiful. Speakerboxxx is more upbeat and fun, Love Below is more artistic, 2 hours of fun. hey Ya! is one.of the best songs I've ever heard, ever.

The double albums are killing me. So much music. I have this album but haven't listened to it for a grip. Good. Solid 4.

I was waiting for it to end as it was very long, but it was a good listen!

I was a bit skeptical going into this as this is a double album that is 40 songs in length. Add onto this that these are solo albums for each individual member of OutKast and I was unsure how rating this would work should I love one members individual direction more than the others. Fortunately, both are exceptional and unique in their own right and showcase the talent this duo possesses. Definitely a commitment to listen to both albums in one sitting, but the reward is more than worth it.

I surprisingly really loved Speakerboxxx and found it interesting and complex throughout. The Love Below a little more hit or mess.

Both parts are defined for both artist loved the interludes.

Andre 3000 is exhausting sometimes. Could have been an incredible single album.

Two distinct albums in one. What a great idea. Both creative works are different but complement each other in a way only these two artists could. 4/5

Wasn't that familiar with this but knew the big hits. It's a fantastic album. I'm a big fan of the P-Funk and this ticks all my boxes. Samples are spot on and uses to devastatingeffect. The rapping is tasteful and eloquent, not bragging or OTT. Another album go back to.

Starts strong with fast techno-synth riffs alternating with slow passages on GhettoMusick. Incredibly varied beats and rapping on disc 1. Highlights: The Rooster, Bust, Flip Flop Rock, Last Call. Disc 2 starts with jazz piano and continues thru different genres. It's a wild ride, but a bit weaker than the first set. Highlights: Hey Ya, Roses, Behold a Lady, My Favorite Things. Speakerboxxx earns a *****, The Love Below *** 1/2, so we'll call it **** overall.

Gotta appreciate the creativity and the universe they have created

I already knew a few songs and am so glad I gave the whole album a listen. There are some real bangers on here!

Listened to this album twice. It is honestly my least liked OutKast album, but only because the others are just THAT good in my opinion. This is still a solid album though. It is long, but I liked that since we probably won't ever get new OutKast again. I liked that half of the album is more hip-hop focused, and the second half is more R&B. It kinda of gave Andre and Big Boi avenues to do their own thing kind of, and I really enjoyed it. They are both some of the best ever. I loved the songs with Jay-Z and Ludacris. I had never heard them before. The skit with the kid rapping is probably one of the cutest things I've ever heard. OutLast never disappoints, and they are both amazing as always.

A two hour double album, that is certainly a lot of OutKast. There was definitely some great range showcased, even if some of the beats felt too similar. The best tracks could've been condensed into one really good album, but sadly that wasn't what happened.

I actually liked this more than I remember. Still not sure there’s enough material for a double and it would’ve been incredibly consistent if it was whittled down to one disc but I respect what they’ve done here. Speakerboxxx over The Love Below for me but it’s a solid collection and doesn’t seem to have aged in 20 years.

I went into this expecting good music and I was not disappointed. I dunno how common this view is, but Speakerboxxx is noticeably better to me than The Love Below, altho the latter has Hey Ya which is clearly the best track on either album. Might be a smidge too long and I could do without most of the skits and interludes, but a very very good album (or albums) in general.

I was quite happy to see OutKast pop up, and boy they did not disappoint. I enjoyed this a lot, will definitely revisit and collect some songs for my playlist. Speakerboxxx is definitely the better album, but The Low Below is also enjoyable with some bangers.

Memories! A+ album.

This is a sprawling masterpiece that’s surprisingly mostly about genuine affection. There’s a ton of clear-eyed love ballads and entertaining skits especially on the Love Below. The DNA for Kendrick’s to Pimp a Butterfly can be found all over this record. Much like Kendrick, Andre3000 has more unique thoughts on this album than I feel like Ive had in my whole life. And this is SO ahead of its time. The intro alone could have been released today, it’s so modern. Most of the first album is this way! Lastly, while I know this is a double album made by two different people with two different visions, I think it flows together very well. Nearly a 5

Loved this

Banger

Some vulgar songs but overall pretty good.

Speakerboxx is excellent, maybe the best hip hop of the 2000s. The way you move is an all time favourite song. The Love Below is... something different. The singles are cool pop music, but there is too much falsetto and lounge music over all.

Absolute classic! For me, The Love Below is a clear 5, and Speakerboxxx varies all the way from 3 to 5.

This is too long by a few skits. But wow are the good songs really good. It’s the freshest sounding hip hop album to my ears since Enter the 36 Chambers. Will definitely listen to this album again.

Well produced but it's not really my thing.

Know this one well. Wish I could rate them separately. Speakerboxxx has a few duds (I'd get rid of War and Church, and a few interludes) but the highs are so high. Love Below is good but not great overall; it hurts that the best song (Roses) has one of the dumbest chorus lines I can think of (roses really smell like poopoo??) Average to 4/5

Really interesting project. I enjoyed all of the variety. At moments I thought the album was over, but then I checked and realized it was still the same album playing. Only note is that it was very long.

Tight. Big boi goes hard of course- i like church, war. Dre gets jazzy and silly she’s alive ( i think) has mf brushes! Draculas wedding tight day in the life tight. Liked roses better than i remembert

This was a great album. A very long, great album.

Loses a bit with over-indulgence, mainly on The Love Below, but across both albums this is filled with a great range of tracks, beats, bars and so much charm. It's such an inviting album, even if some components seem somewhat dated. Straight 4/5

Epic double album but consistently engaging. The two halves are distinct but complimentary. Some absolutely amazing production and Andre's best hooks. I feel that some of the concept tracks, particularly on disc 2, forego being great songs in favour of their central idea which drops things a bit. Fave track: Tomb of the Boom

A long album I never had listened to in full - varied and solid throughout, dipping in between pop classics and conceptual storytelling, really enjoyable. Fave track: Prototype

Met uitzondering van The Way You Move misschien. Had ik even gemist. Intussen even googlen.

Love below was better, it just was. Weird that it was a double album but you can really see how different the two are. Senior year of HS, takes me back.

Takes me back to my college days 🩷

When this album came out, I had just started my first semester of community college. I was living at home while going to school and working, and I have many fond memories of listening to “Hey Ya!” with the friends that I hung out with at the time. Someone that was a year behind me in high school did a physics project about Newton’s first law set to the tune of “Hey Ya!”, editing himself into the music video (it’s insanely impressive for having been done in 2003 or 2004; search Youtube for “first law hey ya” if you have five minutes to kill). But enough reminiscing. I would have sworn that I’d listened to this album in its entirety at some point, but after listening to it today, I don’t think that’s the case (it’s in my Apple Music library, so I bought it at some point). I really thought this was going to be an instant five star review for me, but this album falls a little short. I respect the ambition of this project, but at over two hours, this project just didn’t have enough gas overall to really support the union of these two separate projects. Speakerboxxx is easily the stronger half of this album. Big Boi is a fantastic rapper, spitting out rhymes with a clarity and ferocity that’s uniquely his own. The beats and samples on Speakerboxxx are great, the featured guests are fantastic, and Big Boi’s socially conscious lyrics land really well a couple of years into a post 9/11 United States. I always forget that “The Way You Move” is on this album, and as much fun as “Hey Ya!” is, “The Way You Move” is incredible. The beat, Big Boi’s rapping, and the main chorus all combine to create an incredibly melodic sound. I got to see Big Boi at two separate festivals back in 2011, and he was fantastic. My brother summed up his skills perfectly: “Big Boi makes you wonder how Slim Thug has a job.” As great as Speakerboxxx is, The Love Below just doesn’t hold a candle to it. I appreciate Andre 3000’s creative vision and experimentation, but his lack of singing and rapping skills hold his half back. “Hey Ya!” and “Roses” are fantastic, but the rest of this half of the project is kind of a jumbled mess. I think that Andre’s creativity is stifled by his lack of ability to execute a cohesive vision. I respect the ambition of the project, and it’s definitely one of the most influential albums this century, but the end result is that Big Boi’s half shines, while Andre’s half can’t keep up.

This is the second time I’m listening to OutKast from this website. And wow I have not listened to an album this long before. But it wasn’t a bad listen. My favorite OutKast song was on this album, Hey Ya! But some other great tracks included: GhettoMusick, Roses, and Draculas wedding. My least favorites were: the interludes and Reset and Vibrate. I will definitely listen to the rest of this double album again!

This is a 2 hour album. I could never got bored. I don't think there's many artists that could hold my attention for that long. Take my highest rating yet outkast...4.6

Second disc is well better

I didn't appreciate this album when it came out because it was so sprawling. But this is really great overall. Like the White Album, there are plenty of hits and misses, but overall, you get the sense that these guys are incredibly talented.

One of my favorite albums! Stankonia is my favorite, but this one is a close second. 4/5!

Speakerboxxx is great. The Love Below is not great.

Just because this genre isn't my thing, doesn't mean I can't appreciate the artistry in it. The charted songs are still my favorite on the album(s) and I'm glad I listened to the whole thing because it does tell a story if you listen to it in full.

For me it’s a case of “just because you can doesn’t mean you should” I feel like this & GNR’s Use Your Illusion 1 & 2 could’ve been single albums. This album does have some great songs tho, ultimately think that Stankonia should be on this list instead

I liked this more than I thought I would, but definitely preferred Speakerboxxx more. The Love Below meandered a lot and while I appreciate the genre mixing, it felt inconsistent and started to drag for me.

I can't complain when I get an OutKast album. Both discs are a fair representation of the duo. Neither are lacking style or skills as MCs. The production remains varied enough that 2hrs+ of music doesnt get repetitive. My only complaint is that a few songs could stand to be removed from the two records to bring down the total run time just a little bit. +1 respect for the "call me Mr. Ravioli" verse

There is so much going on with this album. The backtrack/instrumentals are so overwhelming - but somehow it works! This album finds a lot of humor in their songs despite some of them having a profound message. This is different from any other hip hop I’ve heard.

Favourite tracks: unhappy; roses; hey ya; the way you move; ghetto musick

poderia ser 5 se não tivessem 400 músicas

Hmm, I’m very close to giving this a five. It’s surprisingly cohesive under the OutKast banner considering it’s really two solo albums, and it’s so much more than just the hits, but it’s loooong. I can’t help but imagine what it could’ve been if they condensed it down to Stankonia length and produced a tight, 18-20 song album. Still great though; really more of a 4 and 1/2 stars.

Dosta dobro

This isn't something I'd typically listen to, but I actually enjoyed it a lot. Handful of songs I will listen to again

Ziemlich durchgedreht, aber cool

A bit of the same but love some songs

Hey Ya! What a track. I had never before heard the whole 2 albums that make up this double. I do prefer The Love Below - some sweet vocals on this, mainly by Andre, but also memorably helped out by Rosario Dawson (She Lives In My Lap) & Norah Jones in the wonderful Take Off Your Cool. There are some terrific jazz-influenced tracks, notably Love Hater and the cover of My Favourite Things, a-la the famous Coltrane version, which is sampled here even on a track like Vibrate, the trumpet in the background is straight out of the Miles Davis book. There’s some funky stuff here ( I really like Happy Valentines Day) and I love the slower tempos he uses in the second half of the album. On the other hand, Speakerboxxx is more hip-hop. However it does contain some wonderful throwbacks to 70’s soul (The Way You Move & Church are highlights). Overall, a great listen.

This album is clearly one of the masterpieces of hip hop. But, OMG, there is so much of it! Nearly 2.5 hours! Some (much, most) of this is really excellent, but there was opportunity for editing. One star off for exhaustion.

Rating: 8.5/10 Speakerboxxx: 9.5/10 Love Below: 7.5/10 Great album overall. Speakerboxxx is especially exceptional, one of the first rap albums I heard and I always thought it was fantastic. Great production and clever wordplay by Big Boi throughout. The guest features were all fantastic and lyrically it's varied enough that it never feels redundant often thought-provoking. The Love Below is very good as well, more experimental than Speakerboxxx. Really appreciated all of the genres Andre 3000 incorporates on this album for better or worse, a lot of electronic elements and funk. I thought Big Boi was better lyrically than Andre but Andre's album was more varied in structure and genres, Andre disk has the two best songs on the entire album though. They could have made a classic if they kept all of Speakerboxxx minus the skits and took Hey Ya, Roses, and a few more great tracks from The Love Below. Favorite songs: Pretty much all of Speakerboxxx, Happy Valentine's Day, Prototype, Hey Ya, Roses, Dracula's Wedding, My Favorite Things, Vibrate. Worst songs: all of the skits, Reset, Spread.

There is a lot going on in this album, but I don't really have the capacity to write a length review because this bad boy was loooooong. As far as 2+ hour albums go, this one was very good. I still don't love super long albums, but this one had plenty of variety and depth to entertain me from start to finish. A ton of cool features on the rap tracks. As much as I love Hey Ya, it did not feel like it belonged in the album at all. Maybe it's because I have heard it 1000 times before, but it just felt like a radio hit in an otherwise deep cut album. Roses played well with the rest of the album though. I'm currently typing this during My Favorite Thing which is really giving me the rhythm to keep typing. I likely won't listen to this one ever again just because of the length, but I really enjoyed it.

I listened to this at two different times split up by each album. Couldn't do 2 straight hours I like the way you move is a jam and I never knew who it was by Shout out to College Park, MD in Tomb of Boom that was cool I definitely didn't forget what album I was listening to the amount of time they said Speakerboxxx Hey Ya and Roses are the jams on this one and My Favorite Things was a really cool trippy instrumental. A little bit too sexual in some of the songs for me on the album as a whole to give it a 5 but there were chances. I liked the instrumentals of The Love Below much more but the singing of Speakerboxxx was better for me. The Love Below gets a 4 for the instrumentals being really good. Speakerboxxx gets a high 3 as a really good rap album especially when Jay-Z and Ludacris are added. Id say Outkast is better with the 2 of them together though.

More soul, funk, and jazz than I expected. Recognizable samples. I’m embarrassed I only knew a couple of the tracks.

Really loved some of the songs. Album flow was not easy to do background work with. Maybe better cooking. Also long album- though did want to listen to whole thing didn’t make it through

Really enjoyed second half of album

Lots of songs

If they had trimmed down from a double LP to a single, we are talking about maybe the greatest hip hop record of all time.

Starting off with a strong but long one. Of course being from Atlanta I'm quite familiar with Outkast, but despite having this album already being in my music library I don't think I'd actually ever heard the whole album before (while I definitely have listened all the way through their earlier work). Based purely on the radio hits which were inescapable when I was a kid, I expected to like The Love Below side of the album more than Speakerboxxx. But I found the Big Boi half to be really solid, and the Andre half to be (outside of two massive hits back-to-back which still hold up) kinda silly. Nothing wrong with that per se, not every record has to be serious, but it just felt kinda goofy in some places, like he wasn't putting that much effort into it. Still, I really liked it overall, and am a bit embarrassed that i never gave it a chance until now. _We'll I know y'all wanted that 808, but can you feel that b-a-s-s bass?_

Ganz interessant

Rap isn't my cup of tea, but I really liked this album. Favourite songs: "The Rooster" and "Hey Ya!". 4/5

Speakerboxxx is good but The Love Below is great. "Where Are My Panties" into "Prototype" is so aggressively romantic and lovely I cannot even describe the chokehold those tracks had on my perception of attraction when I was in high school and this album came out. There are also so many bizarre and almost spooky sounds on The Love Below. "Pink & Blue" is one. Also, not to mention that "Hey Ya" is definitively the single song to define an entire generation of culture! Also how the hell anyone could listen to this and then still be surprised that Andre 3000 put out a jazz flute record is beyond me.

Interesting record. Not fully my type of music.

A fun listen and a lot jazzier than I remember. Probably the first time I listened through the full double album. It’s long and I could have done with less skits, but will definitely come back to a few songs I heard for the first time.

this album and i go way back. i really do like this album but ultimately, i think it's too long for its own good. what big boi and andre 3000 were able to achieve here absolutely can be great, but there's a lot of chaff they left in here and it could be a lot neater. i understand that was not the "creative vision" or what the situation was when they were making this album, as it is basically two solo albums in one, but this album would easily be in the conversation as their best if it was a little slimmer.

I get that as they were about to go their separate ways, Big Boi and André 3000 felt like they should "unite" their efforts one last time with this double-feature (the use of the word "unite" being partly ironic here). It sure was a great idea on paper to celebrate "the end" this way, and it helped both rappers get noticed one last time after so many other great LPs. The thing is, I can't help thinking that a single CD filled to its maximum 80-minute capacity, displaying the very best of those two separate albums, could have been the stuff of yet another legendary record (that would still be a double album on vinyl versions). Of course, selecting the very best cuts and creating a cohesive tracklisting out of the latter--so as to "unite" the increasingly differing aesthetics harnessed by both rappers/producers--would also have been the stuff of legendary headaches, going on for weeks on end. So this is what we got instead. Two very good albums, often achieving greatness. The only problem is that they're both clearly a notch under *Aquemini* and *Stankonia*. Not really trying to solve that puzzle here, but still highlighting the stellar cuts in each "album": Big Boi's *Speakerboxx*: Not counting the "Intro", you have its first five real tracks "Ghetto Musick", "Unhappy", " Bowtie", "The Way You Move", "The Rooster", a lot of them displaying latin-inspired horn sections that make the whole start of the record feel both cohesive and adventurous. The six cuts after are pretty good, but nowhere near as good as the first five. "Knowing" then achieves greatness again, thanks to its melancholic guitar loop, its lively clave-enhanced beat, and its moving vocal hook. Fast-paced "Flip Flop Rock", featuring Killer Mike and Jay-Z, is quite spectacular as well with its other guitar loop and its old school, "golden age" flourishes (the entrance of the bass as Jay Z starts rapping is an extraordinary moment). The penultimate song "Reset", a lush laidback number is pretty good too, but maybe it could be left out for an ideal "single CD release" of this project. Finally "Last Call" is an apt closer for *Speakerboxx*. It has a curiously quite "west-coast" gangsta rap instrumentation, but throughout his album, Big Boi is clearly indebted to the P-Funk roots of the genre, so this closer is still at home with the rest of the great songs. So that's seven or eight "keepers" for *Speakerboxx*. André 3000's much more extravagant and disjointed *The Love Below* now: after three "funny" short tracks/interludes, the album hits its real stride with funky "Happy Valentine's Day", maybe not the stuff of true greatness, but a cute statement from André-the-loverman. "Spread" goes to the same territory with slightly more interesting, subtle and leftfield instrumentations. Let's keep that one. After yet another "funny" spoken-word interlude about "mornings after", you have the sloooooow and gentle laidback funk of "Prototype". Its dreamy synth finale might make it a keeper as well. After that, "She Lives In My Lap" (featuring Rosario Dawson!) is smooth and sensual in the way that the best Prince songs circa-*Sign O'The Times" are, with extra groove added to its hypnotic beat at the end. And this one's a keeper for sure! Next, I don't think I need to say anything about "Hey Ya". It's an absolute banger, as everyone knows! And after that is a less famous single taken out of the album, "Roses". I think it could also be selected, which is not the case of the following interlude and proper track "Behold A Lady", both totally useless! Fortunately, "Pink And Blue" and "Love In War" up the ante after those duds--the latter once again reminding of the best moments of *Sign O' The Times". Next, "She's Alive" is a misfire, but "Dracula's Wedding" Is not--it's a fun mock-gothic exercise. The interlude and the drum'n'bass cover of "My Favorite Things" that follow are just dumbfounding ideas, however, once again totally useless. The last three tracks are far better, though. "Take Off Your Cool" (feat. Norah Jones) is a cool ballad sung over a delicate, moving acoustic guitar, and "Vibrate" and "A Life In The Day Of Benjamin André" are appropriately moody atmospheric tracks to close the proceedings. You get the picture now, *The Love Below" is a surely a mixed bag. Yet it has more interesting tracks than I remembered it having at the time (going from eight to eleven depending on how benevolent I might feel about the whole project). I think the real issue of this record is about how low the stakes are for the first three or four songs and interludes--with very self-indulgent moments there conveying a bad impression of what this album intends to do. But things are not so bad after that, all things considered. Take out five extra useless tracks/interludes, and the rest even holds water like in the best albums out there. Could the best cuts of each record be joined for a single CD, though? No, I don't think they could. Or it would taking a genius in the subtle art of tracklisting (you know there have been books written about that "art", don't you?). Global grade for the purposes of this list of "essential albums": 3.5/5, rounded up to a 4/5 mark. Which translates to a 8.5 grade for more general purposes. Really hesitating between directly keeping this double-feature in my own list or placing it in my "waiting room". Whatever I decide down there, there are chances I change my mind later on, to be honest... Number of albums left to review: 334 Number of albums from the list I find relevant enough to be mandatory listens: 300 (including this one, probably) Albums from the list I *might* include in mine later on: 161 Albums from the list I won't include in mine: 214

Hip hop in a very interesting mixing style. Every Song feels like a new experience.

Never felt more happier while listening to an album.

Very good album. Two albums in one with a 2-hour play time. Speakerboxxx features mainly Big Boi and The Love Below features mainly Andre 3000. Great tracks and a few bangers as well. Notable tracks: The Way You Move Bust Reset Hey Ya Roses She's Alive

Unhappy unohdettu helmi. Ei juuri turhia biisejä, 4+/5. The Love Below on pääasiassa ihan cool, kivan tunteikas ja monipuolinen. Hey Ya tietty 00-luvun parhaita ellei paras pop-biisi. Mutta aika monta turhaa biisiä etenkin jälkipuoliskolla. 3+/5. Keskimäärin siis 3,5+/5 eli 4/5. Periaatteessa kokonaisuutta voisi sakottaa pituudesta, mutta menköön näin. Duon poikkeuksellinen luovuus ja kunnianhimo kantaa pitkälle.

I think this is often referred to as "the White Album" of hip-hop and I agree. And in fact, I would say that the best songs on "Speakerboxx/The Love Below are actually stronger than the best songs on "The White Album" while many of the tracks are experimental, sometimes with interesting results, sometimes not, but generally rewards deep listening and consideration. Even though the biggest hits are pop radio standards, it isn't an "easy listening" album, not if you want to get the most out of it at least.

If Atlanta was an album it'd be this. A few known songs in "The Way You Move", "Hey Ya", and "Roses". Personally I liked it alot despite its length though I'm not fond of all of the interludes. Two very different vibes - I thought The Love Below had higher highs and lower lows while Speakerboxxx was more consistent across the board. Overall good and the best long album on here yet. 7/10.

OutKast had an iconic discography from start to finish. Ending on a double album where each of the two members get to freely divulge in their creative interests is a perfect way to give a sendoff to OutKast as a group. Big Boi's side (Speakerboxxx) is consistently cool and groovy, while Andre 3000's side is inventive and a bit funny too. Each song brings something new to the table, and I have a lot of respect for the output that OutKast has managed here while maintaining quality. It's also two hours. This is a true double album in every sense, in that you really should not listen to this in one sitting. That said, I think that Speakerboxxx/The Love Below is excellent but a poor indicator of what OutKast was about. It's an exception more than anything.

i always complain about albums being too long, and to be fair, this is a little bit of a unique situation in that regard since truly this is two solo albums-- if you think it's too long, just listen to one! but it is still packaged and presented as one, so i feel it has to lose some points for that. the bigger issue with the runtime though, is that while i do quite enjoy the Big Boi half, once you get to The Love Below, it just doesn't do that much for me. it's very poppy and fun and well made, but i don't respond to it as much as Speakerboxxx. maybe if i did listen to it in isolation i'd feel differently, since the fatigue of the runtime probably isn't doing it any favors, but if i'm rating the whole thing as one album, i can't go above 4

Un long album, 2h.

Loved it. Was concerned as the record is like two and half hours long but I stayed engaged the whole time. It's always such a trip for me to listen to an album and then out of the blue get hit with one of the most famous songs of all time. I find it interesting to hear what comes before or after the biggest songs ever, in this case Hey Ya! Which is actually followed by Roses which is in itself a really big song. Anyways. Very good. Would revisit.

Such an interesting sound for hip hop to encounter. Certainly groundbreaking in its sound and the storytelling through the album comes through. I don’t love it in terms of a listening experience, but the artistry is there!

Love these guys. I think Roses > Hey Ya!

This is an excellent album. I prefer Andre's side, but Big Boi's side is really good too. Some absolute classics on here.

Looong album, but a pretty dang good one. All the big hits from OutKast are present and accounted for on this one. Issuing a double album is an interesting choice; it is clear when the album switches over from Speakerboxxx to The Love Below, and I'm not really sure what the benefit is to keeping the 2+ hours of music connected in one massive album, as opposed to issuing 2 separate albums. Either way, there is lots to enjoy on here. I resonate with the silliness and the aversion to super serious songwriting/lyricism, and the backing tracks (especially keyboards) are great. Fave tracks: Roses, Hey Ya!, God (Interlude), My Favourite Things

Really interesting double album - I enjoyed the contrast between the more Electro-Funk Speakerboxxx and the jazzier The Love Below. I did have a preference for the second half, but no surprise there. Great production, fun interludes and just solid songwriting all around, not to mention some really great features. My only complaint is that it's a bit too long, but you can't really be surprised from a double album. Fav Tracks: GhettoMusick, The Way You Move, Hey Ya!, Roses, My Favorite Things

Ok. Never heard before and I predicted i would be critical of the length and skits and filler material. Its all pretty good. Much impressed.

Big boi’s was a fun af listen that I think I will revisit. Andre 3000’s I appreciated more than I liked although there were ofc some bangers on there

Shit goes hard. I didn’t realize Big Boi was so talented. I think I liked his half better honestly.

Damn. This one is a bit tough for me because speakerboxxx is probably the easiest 5 ive come across yet. Everything from the beats, to the production, the flow, the lyrics, the features are all incredible. That being said i enjoyed the love below slightly less. Its good dont get me wrong but its a different vibe i jive with slightly less. Id give it a 3 so ill avg it out to a 4

It was a really good, though long, basically double album. I liked the Christmas themes in the second part, and the skits were generally more palatable/hilarious than other hip-hop albums. I thought that "Hey Ya!" kind of stuck out from the other songs around it, sounding significantly different. Then again, there was a lot of variance among other songs on the album.

the bad songs are really bad, but the good ones are really good. ghettomusick unhappy the way you move war church flip flop rock happy valentine's day spread she lives in my lap hey ya roses pink & blue my favorite things take off your cool vibrate

Funky album

I loved this one actually. I’m not a big outkast fan but this one was a whole ride. Incredible stories and songwriting. I prefer the first half to the second one. The standout song wasnt even Hey Ya which is insane

Ez 4.5. Only negative is too many skits and a couple songs on Big Boi’s side. Andre’s side is an ez 5

I love Outkast but the length of this album is hard to swallow. Yes it's a double album but 3+ times as long as a regular album. Some amazing songs on here though, especially from 3Ks side. 4.5

Almost deserves a 5 for Hey Ya!/Roses being back to back, but a little too long for frequent listening for me

Damn; at 134:49 this record is a big ask. Fortunately, there's some real quality here. I prefer The Love Below, overall. Favourite tracks from Speakerboxxx (Big Boi): GhettoMusick, Church, Last Call. Favourite tracks from The Love Below (André 3000): Happy Valentine's Day, Hey Ya!, Roses, Love In War, She's Alive, My Favourite Things.

The second half of this album is gold. Love it.

Pretty solid Outkast album never really listened through it all

Loooooong, but fuckin great. Both Big Boi and André got to do their own thing, made their own mega hits, and delivered 2 really good albums stitched together. Best rap duo of all time

I loved it. It's more than just hip hop...it's fun, it's eclective and creative...I was a huge fan of Hey ya! already and the whole experience of the album was really cool. It's now part of my repertoire.

Beautiful, long, and varied. This album has everything, lyrically dense with good RB and hip hop.

Now we eating some real fucking food right here. Most influential and Iconic hip-hop duo. The production is immaculate. The bars are godly. It's wild to hear such a young Jay-Z, Killer Mike, and Ludacris. I had listened to this a while back, but I have a newfound appreciation for most of the songs. There is a reason these guys are the GOATs. Admittedly this album is quite bloated; probably because it is basically a double album. Sperkerboxxx is basically a Big Boi album featuring Andre 3000 and The Love Blow is the inverse. Most of the tracks are good, but the run time just makes some less enjoyable than others. the baseline is high, so standout tracks need to be really good for them to well... stand out. Overall a fantastic album from a fantastic duo. Feeling a strong 4/5 on this one

Solid album, definitely a lot of tracks I recognized. Will have to give it another listen

The Love Below) Would not buy. (tenzij alleen de 2e helft kan haha)

Speaker boxxx ihan helmi ja 5/5. The love below mjooo. 3/5. Eikai se auta ku yhteensä 4/5. Vai 5/5. Vähän kiikun kaakun. Voispa antaa puolikkaita.

Really liked it!

Great music that reminds me of early 2000s. Roses best track.

Only reason this wasn’t a five was because it was so long! Favorite song that I hadn’t heard before was The Way You Move

Kinds wish these albums were released separately. Both are full of highs on par with any other Outkast album, but the two records are so different and the run time is so long that I don't see a major benefit to them being packaged like this.

I do not believe that you can take this album as a single album. At its core, it is two different albums made by two great artists smashed together to be sold under the OutKast name. I will start with speakerboxx, which I felt was the more upbeat and regular hip hop album that is very fun to just vibe to. In comparison, The Love Below was a jazzier and more insightful album with a connected story. On both records, there were tracks that I really enjoy and may come back to, but there were also others I would completely skip over and would not want to come back and listen to. With each record being 20 tracks long, and the whole album being 40 tracks long, there were a lot of points of this album that felt bloated due to the amount of music that is in here. Low 4.

Overall a great double album with lots of incredible tracks. I think there's quite a bit of bloat here, and not everything landed, but overall really good.

A few bangers, generally good

Enjoyed

My one questions is as follows: WHY SO LONG?!? This album felt like a real drag. It definitely doesn't help that this is a double album which separated would be pretty long themselves. Disc 1 felt nothing but mid I have to say. Solid sampling but otherwise nothing special. However Disc 2 was amazing in comparison. The subject of love arose at points with catchy lyrics and ofc, Hey Ya. Major downfall to this album is the fact the first half was mid and the fact it was so fucking long.

I had a hard time rating this album. I didn’t care for a good number of the songs but i think as a collective album or 3 albums it was nice. Especially the second or The Love Below section. I haven’t heard such heartfelt rap, about love loss. It was an entertaining listen through. The first part was more woke (before it was co-oped) rap. Lol no idea how they picked and curated what would go on this album. The usual songs are good. Some other stand outs, Church, Tomb of the Boom, she’s alive, take off your cool, and A day in the life of Benjamin…

Speakerboxxx Highlights: Unhappy, Bowtie, The Way You Move, The Rooster, Church, Flip Flop Rock, Reset Catchier and more consistent tracklist. The Love Below Highlights: Spread, Hey Ya, Roses, She's Alive, Dracula's Wedding, My Favorite Things, Vibrate More ambitious and has some of the best songs, but can meander a bit. Production and instrumentation on both sides are some of my favorite in their discography.

Forty tracks!!! I thought they stopped making concept albums in the 70s. What a piece of work. Without reading the wiki it seemed like a concept album about the lifecycle of a relationship; now I see that it’s two concept albums together. Hey Ya is one of the best sounding pop songs of the century so far. Can’t believe it was 20 years ago. Songs like The Rooster are so innovative! The Love Below and Love Hater are like jazz standards and demonstrate incredible range. Impressive work.

A little long, but quite the jammer

Love it. Too long tho. Standout tracks: GhettoMusick, Last Call, Hey Ya!, Behold a Lady, Love in War, My Favorite Things

Another album I bought and owned when it first came out. There is a lot to love here, and some of Outkast's most iconic songs are on the album, but I can't help to wish that they had edited this to one cohesive album. Like with most hip hop albums the interludes and skits are unnecessary...and there are a lot of songs that feel like throwaways. In general I prefer Big Boi's Speakerboxxx over Andre 3000's The Love Below, but there are good songs on each. Andre's Hey Ya and Roses are iconic singles of the era, but Big Boi's side is just more of a cohesive album. From an influence perspective it's BB's Funkadelic vs Andre's Prince.

This felt like a real long listen, even it is two albums. I mostly enjoyed the tracks, though there were a few especially in the latter half I just didn't vibe with. Though you gotta give respect to the all time classics "Hey Ya" and "Roses." Good album though I wish it was a bit more concise.

this album absolutely oozes funk - caught off-guard by this. love the flow and style of rapping. each song felt like a situation. almost felt like a radio station with the repeated titular stinger. "lover hater" came out of nowhere with a full on jazz track in the middle of a rap album. "god" interlude was hilarious "hey ya" is re-contextualized throughout the latter half of the album, and is still a powerful song. "my favourite things" is a fuckin JUNGLE TRACK??

To be honest, I didn’t get through this entire album in a day (total play time of 2hr15minutes…) but I plan to. This is a really good OutKast album (though not their best) and it highlights each artists individual talents separately. I was surprised by some of the guest spots in this album (I.e killer Mike) but I guess them being from Atlanta they’d feature other Atlanta rappers. Overall I liked what I heard so far and need to find some time to dive into the rest of the album

While sounding fairly different, Big Boi and Andre 3000's solo ventures being released together was certainly no mistake. The experience is eclectic enough to keep listeners entertained through its duration of over two hours, but still has a hip-hop essence that ties it together and makes it enjoyable for its core audience. Predictably, it's an inconsistent record, but the dynamic between the 40 songs in total keeps it from ever getting boring.

Erstes Mal unaufregend 9. Aber es geht direkt weiter, nicer Synth.? 10. Süßes intro für 11. Bis 15. Ruhiger geworden, ohne langweilig zu sein 16. In Playlist Letzter Song top Abschluss und Übergang in 2. Album 1. Direkt ganz anders, Bigband Orchester Klavier Teilweise relativ experimentell, ab 7. Song etwas anstrengend 9. Single, hebt sich vom vorherigen Teil ab, in Playlist 13. Mmmmhm, in Playlist 15. Crazy Jazz Track 2. Album echt top

I knew some of this album already but never listened to the entire thing. It's really two solo albums from Big Boi and Andre 3000. I worried that it would feel bloated but the stylistic shift between the two halves is refreshing and there are loads of hits throughout. Speakerboxxx is the stronger album overall but The Love Below has so many great moments (including, obviously 'Hey Ya!'). My biggest criticism is that The Love Below is longer than it needs to be. It could definitely take out about 20 minutes or so and it help the entire project flow better. I'd skip the sophmoric and misogynistic song Roses, which was apparently a popular single at one point? Go figure. But overall, this is a great album with more hits than misses.

This album was so big in my youth and relistening to it now, it really holds up the test of time. Two solo albums by the duo incorporated in a double album with rare appearances on both of them worked because it would introduce people to more genres like on The Love Below or just a better way to rap like on Speakerboxxx. And while the former is the more innovative, interesting one, I found the first half better in consistent quality. Some of the stuff was even annoying back in the days like the skits and intros. No one needs them. Otherwise, great listen and highly recommended!

two great albums that complement each other so well. double album which doesn't absolutely bore my dick off! both Big Boi and 3 stacks are in fantastic form. best tracks: prototype, spread, unhappy

This album somehow managed to stay interesting and engaging for over two hours. A ton of great tracks, but it'll be tough to come back to this one just because of the length.

One of the best rap albums I’ve ever heard.

Wow. If anything, this is the most album ever. Out of the box production on every track. I think the only reason it’s not five stars is just because of the length. Some people will love it but 2 hours is a pretty hard slog, regardless of how good the tunes. The conception feels a little slapdash, but you can’t argue with the music.

Classic from outkast

Was kinda dreading this album going into it based on length. But it was pretty cool hearing how different both artist styles are, but how good they sound together (if that makes sense). Some pretty good songs on here, probably won't come back to the album. I defientely understand the hype. andre 3k is too icy

First time listing clear through. Pretty good.

Sehr nice and vibey. Draculas wedding kannte ich schon lol Wildes Album Cover

Varied, ambitious and both of its time and tied to its past and present personally, it drags for a stretch in the way many double-albums do, but I have to respect the conceit of a hip-hop/rap concept album (or two?). Slight preference for Speakerboxxx over The Love Below, but the latter's themes of a player investing himself too far into The Game to accept love when he finds it shines -- and stands in critical contrast to many of its contemporaries at this time. Both albums stand out from the male-dominated misogyny of rap at the turn of the millennium -- at least questioning it, if not breaking that mold totally. This is also a watershed moment for the Atlanta scene in terms of artistic achievement, reinforcing the commercial success of contemporaries like Nelly. I think, anyway. I dunno, I'm still learning my history on these things. Not going to be a regular listen, but well worth a dive.

loved second half better

20 years on I now much prefer Speakerboxxx to The Love Below, which just seems weirdly retrogade and misogynistic on a lyrical level (especially 'Roses'). Too many skits and interludes. And instead of 2 separate albums this could have been one stellar album. Still 4 stars, though, I think?

A very cool and unique concept for a double album. Individually I would get each half 4’s out of 5. I did slightly prefer the speakerboxxx half, however the two biggest hits are from the love below half. The collaborators they had on here is quite impressive and a trip down memory lane. This was a very innovative record.

Great Mix of pop and rap

Muito bom. Me surpreendi MUITO com o lado B do álbum. Realmente diferenciado.

Cool ideas, cool sounds, just too long for someone that isn't a fan of hip hop. In fact I like The Love Below more than Speakerboxxx

Speakerboxx: This really gave me to appreciation for Big Boi, and the features here all smash. Hearing a young Killer Mike is especially fun. Very high 4 stars. The Love Below: God I love Andre. When he is good, he is among the best in the game. But this here is just so, so inconsistent. Some of the ideas go on for too long for their own good, and others shouldn't have gone on in the first place. But then the next song will be a mind-boggling new direction that works so well. High 3 stars.

Pretty good stuff. I'd listen again and I added a few songs to my favs list.

Probably could have cut this down to about 90 minutes but I'm sure there are folks that feel like 2 hours wasn't enough. Regardless, it's an album of the year and deserves the accolades.

Liked it more then I thought I would

Objectively: 5 Subjectively: 3 Overall: 4 The album is easy to listen to. It's fun and entertaining. I don't think I can take it too seriously though. I listened to it front to back. I ended up listening to The Rooster three times in a row. I love that song. It's entertaining, and it's hilarious. The lyrics make me laugh. Church is good. Tomb of the Boom is good. Flip Flop Rock makes me laugh, Last Call makes me laugh. The album gives me party vibes, not serious vibes, funny vibes, cheesy vibes. The rap at times is hard to take seriously, but Outkast has never maintained a reputation of being "gangsta rappers" anyway. To me, they've always been the entertainment rap type, not the cold calculated type, and I think the album fits the former definition perfectly. I love the name and theme. The references to speaker box throughout the play through are a nice touch. Overall, it's sugary and light and entertaining. Some songs I will eat up like candy, but they metabolize quickly. There were never moments where I got chills or thought to myself, "wow, that was deep." It was always, "haha, that's hilarious, play it again." So, for what they claim to be, this album hits the spot perfectly. It's entertaining and it's well made. As far as personal taste, it leaves me a little unsatisfied, but it's fun to listen to and it would not be torture to have it playing in the background of a party or at a public event or anything like that. 4.

I don't think anyone is out there bumping this album everyday; with that being said, it's a very good record. With half the songs written by one member and the latter half written by the other, the album stays interesting and fresh throughout. There are a couple party bangers placed among what are otherwise cerebral, lyric-centric tracks. I'm a big fan of the intelligence and subtlety in the lyrics juxtaposed with with their somewhat zany and unorthodox approach to hip hop sounds.

It’s a lot. Not bad, a lot. But not 5 star great either. It can be a touch indulgent in places. But it’s very funky and eclectic. I’ll go strong 4 stars but not quite 5.

Nice long drive today, the perfect time to listen to a 2 hour and 15 minute album. Unlike some other albums of that sort of length, this never really got old for me! Enough different sounds throughout (Plus the fact it's actually comprised of two solo albums from both members of OutKast. I don't think it's quite a 5* album for me, as there were only a few songs I think I'll come back to, but yeah, this was a really fun listen with some absolute classics. Never realised how good André 3000's rapping was, and I wish there was more of it! Favourite: Hey Ya!

a game of two halves, both concluding well into extra time

I can understand why this album is so heralded - It seems I'm a bigger fan of Speakerboxxx than The Love Below, as I think most of the standouts come from Big Boi.

Unhappy // The Way You Move // Church // Reset Spread // Prototype // She Lives In My Lap // Hey Ya // Roses // 3.5/5

I'd give the first half 3 stars but the second 5 stars, so it gets 4 stars

Huh. I liked this way more than I thought I would

Long but good

It's a weird criticism but this album is a bit "much" as in bit over produced and they may have been better going their won directions completely than releasing this double album which is really to single albums. Still there is some really interesting intelligent music here as well as some great tunes.

Very mixed and interesting offering- I'd only really listened to the hits

As usual with Outkast, there is always a solid beat. Heard a few clever lines I liked. I like the mix of classics and some stuff I haven't heard before.

Wow, I mean this is a chunk of work. There's a lot to get through and a lot of it is great.

I don´t know if make a serious review of this, or just ignore the fact that I spent 2 hours listening to this record.... I supposed I just enyojed this. Fav Tracks: Speakerboxxx: The Rooster, Bust, Unhappy, Flip Fop Rock, Ghettomusick, Reset. The love Below: Prototype, Happy Valentine´s day, Hey Ya!,

If I was going to get one of the longest albums on the site, might as well have been on a day where I didn’t have to do anything. Anyway, this is bloated, but there’s some great material on here. First of all, ‘Hey Ya!’ is just a banger. Also it’s deep because relationships and stuff. ‘Roses’ is also good. Also Big Boi’s side is a good rap album. The surprise favorite for me was ‘My Favorite Things’. Combining a Coltrane song with those cool drums (kind of reminds me of Aphex Twin, though definitely not as crazy) was inspired. This was a good album, but why this over Aquemini or ATLiens?

Hey Ya! And Roses are obvious classics but there’s a ton of misses/unnecessary skits in this one

both albums are incredibly rich every song feels textured rhythmically and it was just really fun overall. one of the best maybe ever

Certified bangers here but honestly way too long

PREFS : Ghetto Musick, Unhappy, The Way You Move, The Rooster, Bust, War, Church, Knowing, Flip Flop Rock, Reset, Love Hater, Happy Valentine's Day, Spread, Prototype, She Lives in My Lap, Hey Ya!, Roses, Love in War, My Favorite Things, Vibrate, A Day in the Life of Benjamin André (Incomplete) MOINS PREF : Behold a Lady

Good but uneven. I guess I’m happy because if this album made the list then some other great OutKast albums are on the way.

These two albums start off with banger after banger. GhettoMusick is so good with its tempo shifts, you know the rest of the album is going to be just as unique. I'm not really a fan of the interludes. I feel like they bulk out an already super long album, and they kill the momentum. Speakerboxx seems like it takes traditional hiphop and rap elements and pushes them into a crazy future. The love below... I have no idea what I'm getting into with this intro.

A monumental work, a unique concept ahead of it's time (as with everything Outkast did), a smattering of iconic tracks, bangers, deep cuts and future classics.

Expectations: I thought I would love André 3000's "The Love Below" more than Big Boi's "Speakerboxxx" because I was more familiar with André's work. Reality: "The Love Below" was a hateful, self-loathing, love letter to bad relationships and was truly a slog to get through. "Speakerboxxx" was much more enjoyable to listen to. I'm giving 3 stars to Big Boi and 1 to André.

I didn't want to listen to this album, then I did. Wow. The richness of the music with multiple layers interweaving seamlessly is hypnotic. The raps and ryhmes (I'm white, I don't know nothin', but I'm pretty sure there's a few different rap and rhyme styles being used interchangeably, and brilliantly) are like a mental massage. This was a fast and mood-alicious two plus hours, and I am gonna be listening again. Docked one point for releasing two solo albums as a band album. But better done than Kiss (1.5 out of 4 vs. 2/2 for Outkast)

This album is long as hell, but there's very little about it that I don't like. The 'Feeling good, feeling great. Feeling great, feeling good, how are you?" bit in the first song wins me over immediately. I didn't pay attention to the whole thing, but kept getting pulled in over and over again. It's good stuff.

Sprawling double album - and one that wrongfooted me. My prior familiarity with the material skewed exclusively to the Andre 3000 side of the coin, but it was the Big Boi half of the equation that I found myself enjoying more. Mad that an album this sprawling was able to sustain my interest throughout. It lagged in places - especially where Andre tries to play 1970s sophisticate loverman - but overall, what a curious collection of music, sounds, moods and ideas.

I came in with high hopes after giving Stankonia a 10/10 a few months ago. Unfortunately I was mildly disappointed with this one. A bit too long winded for me, and while the mix of genres that Big Boi and Andre pull off is pretty impressive, I found too many songs to be excessive. I'll continue to come back and hope it grows on me. 7/10

Super good! Two hours of fun. “Hey Ya!” will never not make me overwhelmingly nostalgic and emotional.

Great album, but long.

I remember this album being so big when it came out. It's a beast, essentially a double album consisting of solo helmed records from both Big Boi and Andre 3000, and it's just phenomenal top to bottom, Genre defying and generational defining. It was fun to revisit.

Unik lyd, grineren lyrik, dobbeltalbum, lidt langt, stadig kvalitet

4.5/5. Every hip hop fan definitely MUST listen to this album before they die, 40 songs in total but was left wanting more at the end. Speakerboxxx is more straightforward with a consistent southern rap sound with typical beats. I like the experimentation in The Love Below.

Speakerboxxx is better, fight me

This is a really cool album. And I wanted to give it five stars, I really did. It's just a little exorbitant and disjointed. Both halves are enjoyable; I think I preferred The Love Below on my first listen, and Speakerboxx on my recent listen. By the time you get through both sides...this thing is just way too longgggg. And many of the tracks, particularly many of the interludes, are incidental, not really offering anything of substance, as if they're just padding out each side to make for two "full" albums. Still, maybe my favorite double album in rap.

Hip Hop / Rap is usually not my jam but this is a great, diverse double album with some big hits, great songs, and some stuff I didn't care for. I preferred Andre3000s The Love Below part.

Veeeery nice

Schon gehört. Love Below ist genial Speakerboxx auch gut. 8/10

For someone who isnt too huge into rap, I found this double album very enjoyable. super good first album and the second had the banger hits and some underrated ones. Some songs definitely felt skippable, especially on the second album. 8/10

Great hiphop which mixes many genres!

All time great hip hop masterpiece.

First part of the album is really good classic hip hop, while the second half became more club and pop. It was a fun experience and experiment.

I'm not a fan of hip-hop but this wasn't half as bad as I expected. The entire album has a nice groove and some interesting songs. I was pleasantly surprised.

If going on Speakerbox alone I'd give it a solid 4 stars. The Love Below, not so much. But still good songs. Meh, I guess 4 stars anyway.

I’m 100% The Love Below. Great albums anyway.

Back-to-back bangers

Kind of torn. Very long and too many skits. But it gave us Hey Ya and Roses. It was also able to keep getting me back in every time I started tuning out. Interesting concept but still not sure they needed to release this as one record. Light 4.

Another double album that could he a five with some trimming. Really two solo albums that diverge in sound, style, and approach, we get some great songs surrounded by some crap. The intro to Roses still hits, Bowtie is a lot of fun, Jay Z’s too short verse on flip flop rock is great, and Andre 3000 shows why he’s considered a creative genius throughout, though I wish he rapped more. It’s kind of sad to hear Big Boi repeat over and over again that there’s no issue with him and Andre knowing that they would only make one more album together after this. This is the most recent rap album to win album of the year at the Grammys. Probably bc there not much rapping on it.

Love Outkast but as an actual Outkast album I think this falls through. I appreciate the attempt to keep the group together in spite of their diverging musical interests, but I don't think it works a cohesive project. Treating it as 2 independent albums though, they both rule. I particularly enjoy The Love Below but both are great and super experimental. Hey Ya is obviously just a stone cold classic.

Amazing.

A lot of great ideas and good stuff here but its length prevents it from being rated higher for me. I would like to give it a 3.5 but I'll err on the side of higher because I do respect ambition.
