Reviews (page 6 of 7)
Unfortunately, I don't have a chance to listen to the album. My streaming service doesn't have it and I'm not going to buy it on spec.
Look, I like loud music but stuff like this really captures my inner old lady that doesn't care for incessant loud noises with zero direction. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got a few seconds of silence and realized that the album was over, with no need for me to ever revisit it again. The only reason this isn't getting a one star is because I liked how the production and album artwork felt more modern than 1986.
This one wasn't for me
Got “better” as it went on. “Kerosene” the obvious highlight. Will never listen to this again. This rating is generous. 2/5
Jordan, Minnesota 1.8 Passing Complexion 2 Big Money 1.8 Kerosene 2 Bad Houses 1.5 Fists of Love 1.6 Stinking Drunk 1.4 Bazooka Joe 1.3 Strange Things 1 Cables (Live) 1 Score: 1.54
I did not prefer this.
Hard to enjoy, very mechanical sounding punky music, interesting vibe but not super listenable
dimenticabile
Industrial jangle-punk
I wasn't sure what I was going to get with this one. Started off with disconcerting noise, not a good sign. Eventually it found a groove of sorts and wasn't unlistenable luckily. Not sure if this is a 2 or 3. Would possibly benefit from another listen. 2nd listen didn't do much more for me. This sounds like music angry robots would make and/or listen to.
Noise rock. Todo igual.
I enjoy some punk, but this drum machine punk sounds more industrial. Just ok.
Well, I like punchy music and this has punch in spades. I thought the lyrics were obnoxious but when I didn’t pay attention to the words, it was alright. I don’t mind a bit of industrial noise rock every now and then. More of a 2.5.
When I first started listening to this, I didn’t like it. Then when I looked up the details, I realized it was Steve Albini. I still don’t like it, but it makes more sense now.
I get it, but I just don’t get it
Not my thing, but not entirely awful. Almost made it to a three.
Just generic punk rock and bad singing. No idea what was said and everything sounded the same. 4/10
Old techno?
Tja, nicht mein Geschmack
1 song of The Hives is phenomenal. Great aggressive punk rock. 2 songs is good. A full album honestly is a bit much. It starts to sound just frantic. I liked it less and less as the album went. Unfortunately, the first song is by far the best song on the album, and its just one long downhill slide for the rest of the album.
Noise rock. Todo igual.
Industrial noise rock, nihilistic, but far more listenable than other industrial noisy albums. Liked the bass in Strange Things, reminded me slightly of Muse.
Pretty annoying honestly. Was hoping for more punk influence, but unfortunately a lot of it reminded me of noisy-ass My Bloody Valentine shit that feels more pretentious than anything else. Idk, maybe it takes a few listens.
Wanted to like this, but had a hard time with the industrial sound. The effects were really rough on the ears. 2/5 Won’t listen again
ah, this album was a lot of noise. not exactly where my music interest lies, but i was surprised to hear some metal sounds! with atomizer released in 1986, it's a definite precursor to the nineties metal scene. listening to atomizer for that fact alone is cool, but i could've done without this album on the whole. the harshness, the weird heavy breathing in the beginning of the album... i'm good thanks
This was fine. Nothing special in my opinion.
fun. bonkers lyrics could i write poetry to this? n
Pretty good stuff, but each song seemed to be a bit over-long and repetitive.
While I can see the appeal of this, it is not my thing at all. 2 stars because I liked a couple songs
It was ok, songs weren't especially interesting above the abrasive sound
Pretty good I liked this one 2
Repetitive noise rock. Not my cup of tea.
It was horrible.
I know this is an important record, but the weird sounds and hammering drums just didn't grab my attention this time.
it was one of the metal albums.
Big Black, white noise. No value in this one
Complicated. Amazing music, very (very) shitty lyrics.
For some reason this album isn’t available for me on spotify so I had to listen to it on youtube, was the extra hassle worth it? No, it was not
I saw some reviews call this album abrasive. I won’t disagree with that, but to me it was just too trebly. Bring in some low end or mids, and it’s suddenly “listenable”. Let’s pretend the production value was better. Is it now a good album? Eh, not really. There’s not much here Black Flag wasn’t doing better, or John Mellencamp.
To say that this is just noise means that the distortion is so overwhelming that no other aspect of the music can be enjoyed, which is a shame because its, otherwise, very good. 2/5
Heavy
bwooof je sais pas trop. Il y avait du gros bruit ca c'est certain. Black flag la veille et maintenant ca. La différence est frappante entre les deux styles de punk. celui-ci est plus cacophonique et vraiment moins mon genre. 2.75
Alfa band name. Big Money and Stinking Drunk are the two okay songs that I’d listen to again.
big black what? passing complexion
Big black was hard for my ears to fully handle, but I spread them wide and after 40 mins big black was finished to completion.
Music was hardcore but didn't give me the urge to listen intently, plenty of other more compelling albums you could put on.
Estos estaban re enojados.
Something different for sure - I can see how this band was influential to others. not my favorite but I understand how some people might like it!
Noise, noise, more noise. This is someone’s cup of tea but not mine. It is definitely unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Kerosene so far has been good.
Bit annoying it wasn't on Spotify... it was on YouTube so at least I could listen. Not for me, it was a bit... raw?
No thank you
There's some cool riffs and some fun groove on some of these songs but the whole album sounds like it was recorded in a tunnel and the vocals really suck at times.
Songs on the album are greyed out on Spotify in my county.
9th August 2023 Had to listen on YouTube cos not on Spotify. Took about 3 days, not due to length of album. Very strange one, elements of it i liked but overall it was not good. In bits It’s squashy and funky and hard, in others it’s noise.
Wasn’t in the mood for our curators post punk BS today
No sir I did not like it
Normally I like this kind of music. Not this time.
Very good approachable actually musical and interesting industrial music with AWFUL lyrics that were repulsive to me. I guess that's the point? Thanks for making me disgusted, teenage Steve Albini. Wish I hadn't looked up the lyrics. 2/5
I thought I owned this album, but I can't recognize it. They say it influenced the industrial rock bands that followed, but I would have liked to hear more industrial (electronics) and less rock. I went back and listened to the Ministry album we were sent, which I gave a 4, and based this score on that one - though that's maybe a bit unfair because listening in Youtube isn't as user friendly.
This is more industrial than punk and more noise than industrial and mostly like an ice-pick to the ears. Definitely not a casual listen and you have to be in the mood for this.
An interesting album that seems to have defined noise-punk rock. It was an ok listen, but not my thing.
It's too much for me but sometimes I could get into some of the instrumentals. Just not my kinda music. Another one towards the "noise rock" which I find myself not digging. More towards a 1 than a 3 though. We'll go with 1.666 which feels appropriate.
Started off hating, then grew on me a little. Still realised if it was not for this list I would have turned it off long ago.
1/10, 10%
Never heard of this punk group. It was pretty harsh sounding but not bad.
Big black shit
Generally sounded bad. I did like the refrain of Kerosene and could groove to some stuff. 4/10
Hostile, cold and aggressive. One listen is plenty.
Punk
I kinda like some of the ideas going on here (it sounds a *bit* like Ministry, who I like) but this isn't clicking. It doesn't help that I'm listening on youtube (no spotify) and the audio quality stinks. But the way it's so poppy against such a "harsh" background... doesn't work. I get what it WANTS to be but maybe I just don't care? Maybe the pathetic "omg we hate this and that and oh life is just so bleak" attitude is fucking cliche and boring? Maybe it's nowhere near as artsy as it presents itself? Maybe it's simply just not very good? I dunno, maybe a bit of all of that. 2/5.
A high 2 – there are some genuinely interesting ideas for a unflinchingly abrasive punk album here, but I’m just not feeling it gel together as I would hope or expect it to. Big missed opportunity to maintain genre expectations while being different in only using Albini’s warbly, hyper-distorted guitar harmonics for maybe two songs. A punk LP of this stature leaning into heavy instrumentation with plentiful melodicism would still be revolutionary today, leading me to wish that was the case instead of constant sludgy guitar I would usually enjoy.
Ok
not my cup of tea
Didn't really like it.
I understand the value but it's not for me
not my cup of tea, couple listenable songs but not very good overall
Kudos to the person who mixed this, just massive amounts of noise to comprehend. Had its moments though.
Not for me.
not to be boring and like, only like fiona, but this was a lot
Mostly just noise. 1.5/5
I wanted to like this, I really did, but I couldn't. It just grated on my ears too much. 2 stars.
so it’s not on Spotify so not gunna listen cos I’m lazy, but based on the album cover I’m gunna say a solid 2.5 x
2.5 stars. Not bad at all.
I don't think I'm enough into metal to 'get' this
Unsure what it was
Immediately, I'm struck by how quiet the vocals are compared to the instrumentals, unless they're high pitched and screeching. Beyond that, the instruments just feel like they blur together, unfortunately, and man are they shrill. I wouldn't really say the band covered any topics, because they barely even mentioned anything in passing. The lyrics are really minimal and the music just doesn't carry the rest of the record. Cool album art, but that's about the best that can be said.
Asskolli hressilegt. "Noise rock" er einn af flokkunum sem þessu bandi er gefinn og það stendur alveg undir því. Mun ekki setja þessa plötu í gang eitthvað oft en get ímyndað mér að það hafi verið bilað að fara á tónleika með þeim!
Most songs feel too repetitive. I don't mind the chaotic tone but it becomes too much. Very monotonic.
Interesting at times, grating at most.
It wouldn't work on Spotify, so I streamed it from YouTube, every 2-3 songs, I'd think, "Oh, this is different, nice interesting change ... " and then find I was listening to an advert. It's good solid guitar noise, which I want to like, but when I find myself enjoying the jingles more, it's very telling.
Surely the favorite album of those three teenagers Suzanne Stone (Nicole Kidman) manipulates into murdering her husband in the movie "To Die For". Especially Joaquin Phoenix's character. It feels like an album that would inspire a kid like that.
I've never heard of Big Black, and all of the music on Atomizer was new two me. I did not like this album. I like some heavy music, but I don't like the screaming and grumbling. It felt like a low key entry from Rob Zombie. Even without the vocals, the music didn't catch my attention. I put up with this album, and now I'm done.
You have to be on Spotify to exist. It's a shame since the bit I listened to on YouTube sounded pretty cool
I'm really torn with this one. I liked the energy and some of it really had me hooked. But the production sounded off to me - too thin or small or something? And the more I listened to it, the more I wanted it to end, which isn't great. I won't go back unless some really explains it to me.
Nah not for me.

Deliberately trying to make bad music in the 80’s must have been very dificult
Too much for me, no thanks.
Couldnt play it on spotify
Not sure if it's the YouTube quality but this sounds way more industrial than punk (to be fair I'm not schooled on the cross over there)
Lo cierto es que, aunque debería haber sido un disco que me gustase (por el estilo punk, fundamentalmente), lo cierto es que me ha dejado muy frío, casi ningún tipo de ritmo asociado y canciones que no me han supuesto nada
Noisy as fuck. Nope
I just can’t win.
One halfway-interesting track and a whole lot of noise. Best track: Kerosene
mehh
Bij de eerste nummers dacht ik het te moeten doorworstelen. Maar al bij al was het niet 'verschrikkelijk'
Heavy, driving, hard, too much for these old ears
I like this genre, but not this album
Thos was pretty shitty.
2, ne sviđa mi se, naporno za slušat
too abrasive for my liking
Found this one a bit hard to listen to
Too hard too fast too loud
Lot of energy but I just didn't like it.
Lidt noget larm, men der var fin gang i det.
Metal punk sounds that didn’t let up. Lovers of epic noise will find it energizing.
Intentionally abrasive and offensive. I don't need to listen to that ever again.
no thanks ❤️
IDK just nails on a chalkboard punk 1.5
1. jordan - 1 2. pazzing - 0 3. money - 0 4. kerozene - 1 5. bad - 1 6. love - 0 7. drunk - 1 8. joe - 0 9. ztrange - 1 10. cablez - 0
Raro álbum, algunas canciones me suenan a canciones de Misfits mal tocado y con mala voz, no se entiende la letra, es mucho ruido.
A big slog, not fun at all for me
eeee es 🫤
I didn’t like this. They did have a song called Jordan, Minnesota which is odd. The songs were too long for a punk album. Did not enjoy.
A try hard punk band with a very odd sound. Most of the songs sound like a car backfiring or a fat person falling down the stairs
really didn't like this
The sounds on this literally hurt my head.
Blind album and artist. I feel like this recording a cut was really rough on the edges and hurt to listen to at times. I understand that this is industrial noise Rock but at least try to make it sound better.
Nope
Kopfschmerzen
Very little musicality. Not for me
Uhh….
Schrott! Kann weg!
Atomizer by Big Black is one of the more average albums I’ve come across in this challenge. Nothing really grabbed me from start to finish. It just sort of passed by without leaving much of an impression, and it’s not something I’d go back to. At times it felt like a precursor to a lot of the American punk and alt rock from the 90s that I’ve never really liked, bands like Blink-182 and Green Day. That said, there are positives. The sound is raw, aggressive, and powerful, and you can appreciate the influence it must have had. It just doesn’t have enough memorable moments to pull you in or bring you back. Favourite track: Passing Complexion, a relatively catchy moment on the album Least favourite tracks: Most of the album blends together and doesn’t leave much of an impression Album artwork: Great cover, bright and eye-catching and easily the standout for me
Big Black feels like a band I'd be embarrassed to listen to in public. If someone glanced over at me and saw the Atomizer cover art on my phone, hear the unusually piercing percussion cutting through my earphones... they would shake their head and mutter about "youth these days". And I would agree. (Hey, at least this isn't their later album Songs About Fucking, which has one of the worst album covers known to man.) Passing Complexion excels, in an ironic sort of way. That high-pitched guitar(?) riff is aggressively distorted to the point where, combined with the other sounds, it resembles one of those bass-boosted meme songs from the 2010s. Kerosene's badass-sounding intro and hyper-aggressive, slightly foreboding basswork also grant it a place in my top 3. "Set me on faiyahhhhh. Kerosene." I don't understand these reviews at all. Another reviewer wrote: "Wholesome songs about paedophilia, racial passing, abuse of power in the police force, arson and self-immolation, shame, fist fucking and domestic violence, alcoholism... The aural equivalent of suffering blunt force trauma to the head from a sledgehammer". And then gave the album 4 stars. My guy, we're not running a charity here. Give the artist the 1 star they deserve, and no more than that. Creativity doesn't translate to "good music", and when it isn't even particularly creative (post-punk emerged 8 years earlier than this record was released), what is there to compliment? According to others, its abrasiveness. Which is arguably the antithesis of what makes something sound good. Bazooka Joe starts off poorly with the fun "You don't have to be alone, Joe. You don't have to be alone, Joe. Welcome back, Joe. Welcome back, Joe. Hang with me, Joe. Hang with me, Joe." And then continues with that, bellowed rather than sung, ad nauseam. Not a good look, Big Black. 1/5 Key tracks: Passing Complexion, Kerosene
I've been trying to decide when I was young and angry enough for this kind of music to appeal to me. In considering whether or not the album belongs on a list of 1001 that everyone must listen to before we die, I can't think of a single thing this brings to the table that hasn't already been done better by groups like the Sex Pistols, The Clash, and at least half a dozen other angry punk groups from the late 70s though the early 90s with one or more albums on the list. It's another bit of evidence either that 1001 is far too many albums to put on a required listening list or that the compilers of the list had far too limited personal listening experiences for the list to have much legitimacy.
too much noise
Genuinely the worst album I've ever listened to. Mind boggling that this made the list. People that gave it 4 or 5 stars must know something I don't. Just plain noise with terrible sound mixing and no musical element
No
wow. Powerful and politically, socially conscious. Not a fan though.
This makes me distrust this list/project. 0-1
not good
Snooze fest 😴
I like industrial. I like punk and hardcore. But this is shit.
Sorry to the vintage punk fans out there...this isn't for me and it's not going to be.
WTF? Nobody - NO BODY - needs to hear this before they die.
I'm always down to check out some classic punk....and I know that these things are a matter of personal preference.....this one was brutal.
Lamentablemente no me ha gustado. Entiendo que es música que hay que entender que no busca gustar, pero para mí ha sido difícil de escuchar y conectar con ella.
I hate everything about this.
Cant see myself sitting thru this entire album
This is too cold and calculated to be engaging enough for any sustained listening. A bad version of Gang Of Four with a drum machine.
the thing about Steve Albini and the rest of Big Black is they are cowards. They want to write transgressive material without the conviction to stand behind their lyrics or their context. At that point it’s not even offensive - offense requires substance. it’s annoying because the other noise is good. this could be an easy 4 if it was just noise or if it had anything to say (this will also lead to some real shitty bands like Ministry or Jesus and Mary Chain but we can suffer through that another day)
No
Unless forcibly coerced I will Never listen to this album again. It was horrendous, badly played, badly produced and, if it helped influence industrial rock I won’t be exploring that genre much….terrible.
Totalmente fora do meu gosto musical, apenas barulhos e ruídos para meus ouvidos.
Most of the listen I imagined being a founding member of this band and performing shows to audiences who also had a 1-star impression.
Bazooka Joe 👌🏾
Noise. Irritating.
Prescindible…no he entendido nada, wey.
Listening Notes Steve Albini! Drum machines!! That first track was definitely something... Industrial, Grunge, Post-hardcore First half was interesting, second half lost me Standout Tracks "Passing Complexion", "Kerosene", "Bad Houses" First time? Yes Will it go into your rotation? No
I have no idea what I just listened to but I didnt like it
Not my cup of tea
Another album I couldn’t finish. What a weird fucking album. Not even good sound, it’s just loud “edgy” “punk”.
Not a fan
Not my jam
I can hear elements of punk, industrial and noise rock, but here they combined to produce a wall of incessant grating noises with repetitive rhythms that gave me a headache. This was one of the most difficult albums to get through that I've encountered so far.
Terribly noisy
No.
Monotonous pounding. Unnecessary
ugh 1
Horrible stuff
Not my thing at all.
This wasn’t good at all. I can see why they only have 40k monthly listeners.
Different strokes
nope
No thanks
Fucking disgusting paedo cunts.
American punk junk. It is hard to believe that this is considered one of the greatest albums of the '80s. Well, I thought, at least it's just 37 minutes long. As it turns out, it felt much, much longer.
This is shit !
American punk is mostly abrasive noise. This is no exception. Dislike.
It's rough. I get why it's on this list, but it's rough. I can't understand the lyrics (and going by Spotify's description I wouldn't want to either), so I'm left to just listen to the repetitive melodies they hid behind far too much post-processing. Special shout-out to the latter half of Strange Things, where they skipped punk and went full experimental banging pipes on radiators.
The author of the 1001 album book really liked experimental music... but I don't
Like someone took a shit in your ear canal.
Can we just be honest when there's a bad album. This is objectively bad music. It might've been making a statement 40 years, but who cares when the music is so bad. No thanks
dogshit
What a mess of contrived electronica. Just noises.
Not for me 1/5
# Album Name: Atomizer # Artist: Big Black # Rating: 1/5 # Comments: Im not going to lie, the first track had me thinking WTF is this shit. And it remained that way. Not for me this one # Top Tunes: None # Would I listen to it again? No
Not atomized, more like a solid turd.
No 1.2
More accessible than some other punk I've had on this list, but still a distinctly unpleasant experience for me.
Just a whole lot of noise. I did find the last two tracks to be listenable but maybe I just got used to their sound by then. Cool album art though.
Boting
mixture of punk and new age. Not that good.
awful
Awful.
Gar nicht mein Stil. Heavy Metal…
Very polarizing global reviews, very few 3’s. I fall on the lower side on this one (no pun intended).
Sounds like a panic attack wrapped in anxiety that hurt my ears. Also the topics/lyrics sound like something I don’t need in my life. I imagine Albini accomplished exactly what he wanted with this album and will appreciate my 1 rating.
Nope
I was annoyed after one and a half songs so I shut it off.
It felt like something was ripping out my eardrums
definitely not my type of music
An assault on the ears
I can't. It was just too many abrasive noises on top of each other, and so repetitively. And this, coming from a man who has enjoyed Bastard Noise.
noise rock, wtf. maybe one or two was ok
Really bad noise punk. Pass.
Punkish music released in 1986 - never heard of them. They're talented, but uninteresting. Best Songs Passing Complexion Kerosene Strange things
Bad
1. Jordan, Minnesota - 2 Vocals are completely drowned out. Instrumentally it's very experimental and at times very enjoyable, but overall the song is lacking anything that would make me want to replay it any time soon. 2. Passing Complexion - 6 Instrumentally this is freaking brilliant. The beat and the waning guitar sounds make this a track you will absolutely tap your feet to. Lyrically it's a bit lost but they're never on the track too much to ruin anything on it bar maybe the scream at the end. 3. Big Money - 5 Carbon copy the last song but a little less enjoyment in the instrumentals. Bang on average track. 4. Kerosene - 2 The instrumentals are the only thing keeping this off the bottom rating. Lyrically it's dry, repetitive, and completely boring. 5. Bad Houses - 2 Carbon copy the previous song's critique but this time the vocals are completely drowned out and absolutely pointless being on the track since you can never hear them well enough to make out what they're saying. 6. Fists of Love - 0 I try to keep things within a 1-10 range for tracks... but this was so outrageously and horrendously bad. The lyrics are completely uncompelling while the same riff and drum beat is on repeat for the entirety of the song. Mix in horrible sounding noises like nails across a chalkboard (yes, actual nails across a chalkboard sounding like noises are on this track) and you get something so bad it cannot be awarded a single point out of 10. 7. Stinking Drunk - 3 The guitar in the opening half is amazing but the entire second half of this song from the bridge onward is awful. 8. Bazooka Joe - 3 The opening half a minute to this track is needless. Guitars are outstanding on the track given this between both the chorus riffs and parts in between the verses/choruses. Signing and lyrics, as par for the course for the entire album, leave everything to be desired. 9. Strange Things - 1 A monotonous and incredibly boring track. 10. Cables (Live) - 1 It's just a completely lost song. Guitars on it are peaking and sound very very bad. Lyrics are just non-existent, incomprehensible, or barely even saying anything bar shouting "Rebel!". Average Rating: 2.5 Adjusted to a 5-Point Scale: 1.25 Rounded Down: 1 Star
Some of it doesn't sound as if it was released in 1985. No surprise that one of the members went on to produce some classic grunge albums. Worth a listen but not one of the tracks stood out or made it into another playlist. Never would have heard of them without this and probably wouldn't have missed them.
A lot of my friends love this album but I could not get into it. There are a couple songs that are okay.
Big Black has been described as having “a sound resembling a singing saw blade mercillesly tearing through sheet metal.” My question is, why? You don’t like the sound of a saw blade tearing through sheet metal. I certainly don’t. No one does. People who work in factories where saw blades tear through sheet metal wear ear protection so they don’t have to hear that. So why listen to it by choice? What would make you want to do something like that to yourself, and more importantly, to me? It’s like food critics kind of. A million people eat McDonalds every day; but a million people eat delicious nutritious home cooked meals or at quality local restaurants every day too. So food critics should steer people away from McDonalds and towards good recipes and restaurants. That would be a productive and noble use of their platform. But that takes work and might not draw enough eyeballs. So they do write ups of the weird niche pop up that four people a night go to for clout that charges you $200 to inhale vaporized eel brain. This album is $200 vaporized eel brain. People don’t like it. It sucks. But it’s so extreme that it makes for good copy for lazy music critics to write about. So here we are. Speaking of drawing eyeballs, Steve Albini has walked back his frequent use of racial, gender and sexual orientation-based slurs (how punk rock!) but what no one who later recants saying those types of things ever admits is to why they did it. They did it for attention. They wanted to sell their shitty noise music and have people go to their awful headache-inducing concerts and normal people were never going to do that so they tapped into the edgelord market because edgelords are dumb, have a little money and there are enough of them to sell an okay number of records. Lyrics of that nature are a commercial decision, despite being very non-commercial. Targeting a niche market is still targeting a market. It’s no different than Madonna’s metal bra or Lil Nas X’s video where he gives Satan a lap dance. It’s all manufactured controversy meant to get dumb teenagers to buy your record. So don’t get on Twitter in 2023 and say you shouldn’t have said those things because of your privilege. Give back all the money and fame you intentionally sought by saying them or sit in your Wicker Park condo collecting your interest and shut the fuck up.
Dear future me, Trust me you won’t like it!
This one was bad. Not excruciating, but I didn’t like anything about it, or really even find it interesting. Bad singing, bad style, bad everything.
Was the goal of this album to make fun melodies with the most annoying sounds possible? If so, I think they nailed it!
To much distortion and strange noises for me to enjoy.
Sorry, what's the point? For me, it has nothing to do with music. And I don't understand why this album is supposed to be one of the most important albums of the 80s.
I only need two words to describe this album: Abrasive noise. This was not a pleasant listening experience and I don't think I would listen again (given that I almost DNFed the first time around.)
There is no reason anybody needs to hear this album. 1 star or F-.
Wow that's a lot of distorted heavy breathing. This sounds like how Wayne and Chip would sing if the audience shouted out "punk rock" on Whose Line Is It Anyway?
Urgh, harsh harsh harsh!
The hell?
No
. Pass very much not a fan. Made my ears and head hurt.
very loud even on low volume - but the bandleader prduced many famous recordings for others
Could not finish
Pre-listening: I own one Big Black album (Songs About Fucking) and it didn't do much for me so I never bothered to explore further. Maybe I will like this one more... Quite a week of personalities, going from two Courtney Love albums to a Steve Albini one. Listening: Yeah, this pretty much sounds like the other album I have. There may have been a time in my life when I would have liked this, but that time was well before 50 years old. This music just gives me a headache now. And I have always found Albini's lyrics pretty repulsive.
Dafuqevenizdis? Shite. Dazwat. Next.
Ugh! That was rough to listen to!
Suck daddy
Tedious.
Yeah turn this shit off
Not good
Like an even more shit version of the Pixies
This took a couple tries to get through, definitely not a sound I enjoyed. I was surprised guitars could sound so bad, I'm reading that they used aluminum guitars to get a shrill tone and intentionally cut out the bass in order to make it more jagged and grating. 1/10
Had to give up 2 tracks in. Too much noise. Was just making me cringe, as it sounded like scraping metal mixed with nails on a chalkboard.
A bit too rockin’
Aika heavy.
The cover made the album seem like it would be fine but it ended up being terrible. Stay as far away from this heaping pile of crap!
More noise than music
Terrible by choice.
Not my style
I haven't been a fan of really any of the punk albums in this list so I don't have high hopes. Wow the production is absolutely awful on this album, it sounds like it was recorded through a shoe. This is literally horrible. I didn't realize this was Steve Albini's band, for some reason that makes sense. I'm sure he'd say some pretentious nonsense about how this music is about _pushing boundaries_ but it's actually just shit.
What was this nonsense?! I am not generally a fan of punk so maybe this is good and I’m not metal enough to get it? I had a hard time distinguishing among the songs as they all appeared to begin with the same painful wall of noise.
Bad. Horrible. No good. Awful. Terrible.
wtf it's just noise
I couldn't finish this...
I'm barely a song in and I want to stop. Why is this shite highly rated? It's AWFUL. Maybe I'm old but just no, I never needed to hear this before I die. And the screaming? Why?
Kind of metal, not good.
I just fucking hate punk. With some exceptions. This is not one of them.
Just noise
Terrible album. Calling it noise is an insult to noise. I thought a 1 star was too harsh, but after a little more contemplation, this is a 1 star album. I really hope there isn’t another Big Black album on this list.
I did not care for this. I wasn't in a great mood and this was not what I needed to hear. Not sure if I ever need to. Enjoy it.
No
Lots of noises. Some of it very unpleasant. Also some very strange subject matter. Hard pass.
No thank you. Just noise. Completely unnecessary inclusion. 1⭐️
Just noise - tough listen, I don't really get why people enjoy this sort of thing
pas mon style non plus lol
Not for me. 1
Just alot of noise
garbage
Nope, screaming and screeching for 40 minutes with no redeeming qualities for me. 1* I thought the album had one song that didn't suck, but my music player had actually moved on to sonic youth.
Two stinkers in a row, this one sounds like grunge alternative. The bass kind of overshadows everything else. It's not British but I think I'd be biased if I didn't also give this 1 star. It doesn't make me as mad as yesterdays album, but I'm still made at the wasted inclusion.
Terrible. There's just no circumstance where I would want or enjoy listening to something this hardcore personally. If it had more character (e.g., Ministry) maybe. But I just couldn't find anything enticing about this.
Noise. no. Just. No.
If y’all can rate pop 1 star bc you’re misogynistic I can rate this 1 star
Anger management might have helped these guys.
Shit
I had such high hopes too
1.5
Kind of lame edgelord metal
Bra melodier o riffs annors lite motbjudande för mig.
I can't think of any situation where I'd ever want to listen to this loud, abrasive noise.
Heavier and covering harsh topics. The sound was relatively decent considering but still not good for me.
Kinda interesting, but mostly just noise. One of the worst albums I've heard on here. One star.
The lyrics to the songs I read on this album appear to be atrociously stomach churning and repulsively vulgar. This album is completely distasteful and I'm skipping it.
The most surprising thing I have realized after listening to 119 albums her is that Johnny Rotten is not the worst ever musician who got a record-deal. I have encountered James Hetfield and let's not forget Little Simz (have to be inclusive these day's) and no there are these guys as proof that my opinion regarding mr. Rotten was totally wrong. It is not only the musicians though, the wiki article does not mention the studio where this was recorded nor the sound-engineer responsible for this. Now if I did my job as bad as this I wouldn't want my name associated with it either so I can't blame them for that. Now I don't know what the sound-engineer was thinking but he (/she/it/they/attack-helicopter again must be inclusive) either just set the controls on the mixing-desk to random positions and then buggered off for a long boozy lunch or maybe he (/etc) was already stinking drunk. Maybe the studio was an equal opportinity employer and he (/etc) was as deaf as a post (are posts deaf? listening posts would not be right?). There is also the (tiny) chance that the sound-engineer knew exactly what he (/etc) was doing and the fact that most of the time you can hardly make out the lyrics is a deliberate attempt to shield us from their horribleness. Anyway after a lot of dross I did not give a crap about finally an album I can hate from the bottom of my heart. I see that as progress.
boring front to back
I just want to know who thought this album is good and has a big enough impact to be on this list because frankly it is not.
Quick listen on a day when I could barely function.
Not sure what this is or who it’s for
oof....
Not on Spotify
Couldn’t listen, wasn’t available on Spotify
Not on Spotify. 1/5
Müll
Lots of noise. Largely not great noise but on occasion it didn’t make me want to turn it off. Although it got very close very often 1.4
This album was not available on Spotify.
Only made it thru a couple of songs. Not for me.
Horrific.
First album I couldn't listen through. I got to the second song and turned it off. This wasn't available on Spotify, so I listened on youtube. Judging by the comments, the album sounded fine. Horrible.
Old school punk like noise.
