Reviews (page 4 of 7)

Anche no. Non è un completo disastro perchè ci sono dei suoni interessanti ogni tanto. Ma anche no.

I like this better than the two stars I gave it. Great industrial sounds but not something I'd likely return to.

Well it’s certainly unique and I’m not a hard no. I just don’t know when I’d be in a mood for this or want to reach for it.

Tedious, sophomoric, don’t hate it but there were bands that did this thing better.

My gosh, my interest and curiosity is piqued reading the reviews on this one!! Expecting a noisey, hot mess of chaos. Let’s see how it lands… Well, I’m all for experimentation and left field stuff in here, but this isn’t even enjoyable. Just feels like unskilled noise, lacking enjoyment or pleasure. Not for me, thanks.

Interesting and at times really inventive, but I'm with the why is this on here crowd. Still like it more than an electronica album.

Not keen on arrhythmic beat throughout. Just a blur of noise/sounds - especially at the start of the album. Gets marginally more melodic as album progresses. Maybe I’m just misunderstanding the deep emotional outpouring within.

Got better as the album went along got especially good once the album stopped and it went on to suggested for you

I'd love to be one of those people that enjoy this stuff, so I can pretend to be a superior being to everyone else, but I just can't. Although to their credit, it wasn't nearly as abrasive as I thought it would be, and I did hear some smattering of actual music every now and again, therefore it gets a 2. Just.

All the lil goth kids should be disappointed that a concept album about witches had this mediocre of a delivery. This could have been super cool, dude. Even I'm upset and I'm not even into witches.

this album reminds me of driving while the sun is in your eyes behind some trees. at first it’s cool to see the flickering lights and imagine yourself in a movie; golden light dancing in and out right before your eyes. then that happens for 41 minutes straight and you wish it would stop

j’aime pas trop le style mais en vrai ils se débrouillent bien

as noise rock goes, it was fine, but I didn't enjoy it.

I listened to it, so I hope that appeased some witches. A bit of a high school art project. Do I feel enlightened by listening to it? Not really. Best bit was the bird song at the end of the last track.

I disagree. I did not have to listen to this album before I die.

I appreciate that we got a noise sort of album on the list but I don't know if this is what I would have picked and we already had Throbbing Gristle which >>>

Probably a 2. Noise is not my thing I guess.

This wasn't as terrible as I expected and I like the concept, but it would probably do better with a live theatrical performance.

Migraine s(t)imulator

I couldn’t get into this. Only listen to the first few tracks 1.5 stars

This was mostly annoying and unpleasant

Couldn't find this one so I skipped it

they created some cool atmospheres at times, but it didn't win me over

Lo he intentado, pero no merece la pena escucharlo más de una vez.

Didn't love it. Didn't hate it. Might need to relisten to it some other time.

This album made me feel things at least. Sometimes it was like I was watching the scene in Dumb & Dumber where Lloyd and Harry are driving in the van with the hitman and Lloyd says, "Do you want to hear the most annoying sound in the world?" Sometimes it was pretty exhilarating. It's no shock that I liked the close of the album (the last three songs best), with Hold Hands and It Will Happen Anyway best. That was pretty bad ass. Those three songs are the most like typical songs. My biggest complaint is that sometimes they smother the momentum they create with weirdness - maybe on purpose. Take There's always Room on the Broom, if that song has actual drums and bass, not the thin little hi hat crap, more like caveman pounding drums, that might be pretty rad. In general, this music would benefit from real drums.

I don’t remember what I just listened to. I think it was okay?

Way too experimental for my taste, not the worst ever but would rather not listen to this again

Reminded me of Death from Above 1979

1: Damn... We suck! 2: Wait... Why don't we just make an album that sounds shit on purpose? 3: You're a genius! Can't quite give this a 1 because I actually did appreciate parts of it

this was kinda weird. like i didn't know what was happening

I didn’t enjoy this album, nor did I listen to the last half of it.

Whacky art school shit.

Slick peckers

Noise, not really music. But you know what? There were parts of the album where I got drawn in to a strange rhythm or cool sound.

Experimental e claustrofóbico.

Honestly sure, I’m glad I listened

Different

An weird album that i am again surprised made this list.

Listened in the car driving to the University. I really wanted to like this record. I usually like bands that implement noise and unconventional sounds but this one just didn't do it for me. I liked the rhythms and drums but I wish there was more harmonic material for me to sink my teeth into. Disappointing.

I wish it was a noise rock album instead of just noise

Not the worst of the noise albums, but doesn't evolve much

In my heart, I know I shouldn’t like this, but I actually kind of did! Many of the elements of this album felt like Mothers of Invention, which I have typically trashed. But there was like a Ministry/Skinny Puppy/1990s alternative vibe to this album that I actually really appreciated. I don’t know if this album is an immediate reach for but the listen was good. I think for me the key song was We Fenced Other Gardens. Some of the other songs like They Don’t Want Your Corn felt almost like Beck. I’m perplexed by this album, which I kind of enjoy the feeling of.

Random thoughts: * This was some abrasive music. I'm not even sure how to describe this. * I've never heard of Liars and probably because this is an acquired taste to say the least. * I'm really starting to question the 1001 selection of 21st century albums. I feel like the 20th century has been well represented maybe with a bit too much Nick Cave. But the 2000s selections feel like the author was trying too hard. * I won't be seeking out Liars anytime soon.

Wild wacky stuff.

I like the concept. The execution wasn't something I enjoyed. A little too sparse. I did really like Hold Hands and it Will Happen Anyway, which is probably closer to a traditional song than the rest. Overall, will not listen again.

Bit too much Geiger counter vibe for me - I was more interested when I read about considering it a concept album. Going in blind didn't help it

I'm not really sure why this is on a list of 1001 albums you need to hear before you die, but it was a challenging listen with some interesting highlights. The concept of German witchcraft themed songs was interesting but wasn't prevalent enough to be a feature. I wouldn't be against hearing something a little more streamlined from these guys, but I'm probably not going to revisit this. Sounds like good music to put on if you're running a haunted house. Favorite songs: We Fenced Other Gardens With the Bones of Our Own They Don't Want Your Corn, They Want Your Kids Hold Hands and it Will Happen Anyway

The only good thing about this album are the song titles. Bumped it up to a 2.

Before Listening: I’m not sure what to expect from this! I like the cover, it’s very interesting! After Listening: there was definitely a theme and it was stuck to! I liked the ambient noise but felt like the music belonged in a movie like 28 Days Later or something. The repetitive lyrics were like casting a spell which was cool, but not my favorite album.

Está muy denso, no sé si me gusta.

This definitely puts the noise in noise rock. Too much of it for my taste.

Not to my taste

I really wanted to give it a chance, but this is just rhythmic noise. No stand-outs, but ‘Flow My Tears the Spider Said’ was the least horrible.

No les pillo el punto. Ni son Suicide, ni Idles, ni Yeah Yeah Yeahs... No me convencen, aunque sean aclamados.

I didn't get all the way through this album. What I did hear was chaotic, and a bit proggy in places

Like Silver Apples with newer tech

Atmospheric

Sounds like they watched the alien skits from the Muppet Show and decided they could do an album of that. The muppets do it better.

This is one of the lowest rated albums on this website, and I can certainly see why. I somewhat enjoyed the first track ironically, but I quickly grew tired of it.

This was bizarre and experimental, but I disagree with Spin magazine, which called it "unlistenable"—I've listened to other albums on this list that are much worse. Lacking the ability to give half-points, I'll credit their weirdness and round my 1.5 stars to a 2.

You ever just look at an album and realize it’s gonna be a long day. I put this John off so long because I didn’t want to hear it. After actually listening to the album it is strange but not a throw away. Unique noises and sounds very different from the times.

This one made me deeply uneasy. I'll remember it when I have to bust ghosts out of my house..

What on earth the was that!!?

Noise rock, radioheadesque We fenced other gardens

It was Ok.

A weird witchy album with an almost childlike sound. You know, like a demented child. I didn’t really like it, but I don’t think it deserves to be one of the lowest-rated albums, either. It’s pretty cohesive and not an active assault on the ears, unlike some of the other bottom feeders.

Shouldn't exist it's that shit.

There's a couple of good songs here but the rest just fucking suck

Noise-rock in the typical camp of 'just because you can doesn't mean you should'. Credit where credit's due: I appreciate that the album has a strong vision and is trying something new. The lack of focus ends up wrapping around into making an album where each track feels very unique. Plus the atmosphere is cool in a lot of places. It's an interesting sonic experiment and I'm usually a big fan of anything esoteric that's really taking the roads less travelled but this didn't hit. fav tracks: Hold Hands and It Will Happen Anyway

Always fun to read positive reviews of generally disliked albums that are just like “I guess SOME people can’t appreciate music that SUCKS” Interesting to hear a lot of these songs go from unlistenable to okay as the instrumentation coheres but there are diminishing returns.

★★½

Weird music but not the good kind.

Really not my jam.

It's unfortunate that this was the album chosen for Liars. their Spotify bio says every album is different/ they're constantly reinventing themselves. Unfortunately, I'll never know what they're capable of because I had to sit through this dumb abstract painting of an album.

Do not listen to this album as background music whilst you're trying to do some spreadsheeting.

I'm not giving it a 1. And I understand those who think any rating above a 1 is being unrealistically generous. This is a weird album with tracks that are white noise-adjacent. It's kinda pretentious and smarmy. Still, I can somewhat respect it. Like it sucks to listen to, but interestingly?? Y'know, like it doesn't sound good, but it's intentional. So, respect.

Sort of a lo fi noise rock klaxons, reminded me of that band black eyes more than anything. The foundations of some of these songs are quite good, I'm a fan in general of messy sounding post-rocky stuff. They didn't really build the songs up in any way though, like they'd decided that sounding weird and unsettling was enough. So not bad, but definitely not good. 2.5 but more a 2.

Hadn't heard of these and had no idea what to expect. Three cover made me think it might be punk, twas not! We've had another "noise rock" on the list I think. Dracula mountain. I much preferred that. This was a bit much for me, although there was parts I thought were ok, just not enough of them. I think 2.5. is not as bad as a lot of these reviewers suggest but I couldn't really get on board with it

The album grew into itself as it went along, but in the end, not my cup of tea.

eins bis zwei

Listens: 2 Standout Tracks: Flow My Tears The Spider Said I recognized this album... I had seen it on the bottom 20 global stats page :( I kind of wish the Global Stats page (specifically the Bottom 20) didn't exist, or a bottom 20 album was somehow only revealed after you've listened to it. It both consciously and probably unconsciously biases people's reviews of albums. I have now listened to 4 of the current bottom 20. Two of them I rated higher than the average, and one of them lower. This album wasn't a 1. There are definitely other albums I have hated much more than this album, but there's not many redeeming qualities here. Make no mistake, this album was bad. It deserves to be on lowly rated. I don't know if it should be on the list. Perhaps if I read the blurb in the 1001 Albums book the author might explain the why or what the cultural significance is. I know that I can think of better albums and artists that aren't here that could replace this. When I was listening, all I could think of (besides please make it stop) was Brick from Anchorman screaming LOUD NOISES! There's a lot of dissonance going on, only maybe one or two songs had anything resembling a rhythm or cohesive musical structure. There's barely anything that you could really, truly consider singing. It was more like moaning, grunting, huffing, barking, chanting, etc. On the plus side, it was consistent: across the tracks, conceptually and also consistently bad, so that's something, I guess. I also enjoy long album and track names. Very Modest Mouse-esque.

I kinda liked the bit with the birds but the half an hour of moaning before put me off a bit.

Vähän luisui sormien välistä tämä levy. Häiritseviä repiviä soundeja ainakin oli! 2/5

An album that I can only imagine was written to summon a demon. The lyrics were wild - however the melodies not an entire miss. Not sure I understood the concept of the album - except they liked witches and magic. Oh and that they want to be a horse

How do I say I don’t like this and not sound like ‘that’ guy…I guess ultimately I just found it a little boring? I’ve heard sound collages before. I’m not sure what this brought to the table that was new.

someone said NIN but goofy and now I can't un hear it.

Yeesh… I’m always expecting the worst when these noise rock records show up and the listening experience is almost always the same. I guess the only merit I can give this album is the fact that it follows the theme of witchcraft all throughout. You don’t see that concept brought to life in music too often. But sonically, it just wasn’t that interesting to listen to. I think a 2 is more than fair with all of that being said.

Labiau potyris, nei kažkas, ką klausytumeisi dėl malonumo. Tuo metu tikriausiai labai įdomu buvo.

I've seen this lot live. It's not great, willfully abrasive throughout and I was glad it finished.

This album is more of noise than rock, to begin with. It's not that I don't like noise at all, some albums of that genre are interesting but... It's not my thing (at all). As for this album, it's repetitive and uninteresting most of the time. There are only two songs that are, at least, decent. It's not that they are actually great but at least there's something there. And one of them is the last song. As for the rest... I don't care.

Not for me

Glitchy, noisy, early 2000s alternative.

They have their own sound, which is impressive, but the creepiness becomes repetitive after a while.

what the hell is this? Not in 100.001

Unpolished nine inch nails / radiohead wasn't awful! But that doesn't mean I liked it!

I saw these guys a lot back in the day. This shit hasn’t really aged all that well. Either that, or my patience has waned in the last 20 years.

I wouldn't say I DISLIKED this, but it's not something I would seek out again. I almost gave up after the first song but glad I stuck it out because I actually started to find it interesting about half way through.

i don't dislike this bc it's noise rock, i just think it's pretty boring noise rock

Cool concept, but nearly unbearable to listen to. 2 stars.

I guess I just don't like noise rock

Very odd, often grating album. There were some sections of some songs that I did get around, particularly on the second half. I didn’t like the vocals at all. I enjoyed the drums on ‘We Fenced Other Gardens With the Bones of Our Own’ I vibed with ‘Read the Book That Wrote Itself. ‘They Took 14 for the Rest of Our Lives’ had some cool sounding parts, interesting guitar work. For me this album doesn’t quite justify its inclusion in the list.

This is like early Sonic Youth is they were somehow even more mid and also 30 years late. The fact that this got slapped with the genre, Noise Rock, is insulting, just cause the band their copying helped to create the genre doesnt mean you get to use it too. 5/10

At the time of writing this is the seventh worst rated album on the website. I don't think that's fair. I don't think this is a great album, but I really don't think this is as bad as some of the forgettable 90s slop I have been subjected to. Whereas a lot of albums seem to have no mission statement or raison d'etre other than to make money, this one wants to create a vibe. The vibe is being sent home in a taxi from a night out by your friends because you are a mess and you're fighting off the urge to vomit while late night top 40 radio plays. It is an interesting experience. I find it hard to write my thoughts about it, outside of what I described two lines ago, I really don't have any particularly strong feelins towards this album. It is certainly evocative and I can appreciate it for being art that gets a reaction out of me, but I don't think I will listen to this again. Highlights: We Fenced Other Gardens with the Bones of Our Own

Not the kind of thing you’d want to unwind to, but I actually enjoyed this as an art project. Very scary vibes. The sounds really put you on edge. Very industrial. Still, this is mostly obscene from start to finish. ⭐️⭐️

I will find a way to be a little positive. The concept of this album is great, there are some great instrumental risks and choices here but much like blues explosion they fall flat more than they translate to good song ideas. Killer attitude and fuck you about this album that i find appealing. There is not a single song on here that I would ever listen to again for fun. The vocal performance is just so bland and boring over these hit or miss Instrumentals. If you handed this album vocal-less to Isaac Brock this could be a heater. Not feelin this one even though I really wanted to. Album art is sick though.

9/10/25. Interesting. A couple songs toward the middle and end that paid off. Challenging listen!

2.5 We Fenced Other Gardens With the Bones of our Own Hold Hands and it will Happen Anyways

Broken Witch - 6/10 Steam Rose From The Lifeless Cloak - 6/10 There’s Always Room On The Broom - 6/10 If Youre a wizard then why do you wear glasses? - 5.5/10 We Fenced Other Gardens With The Bones of Our Own - 7.5/10 They Don’t Wan’t Your Corn, They Want Your Kids - 6.5/10 Read The Book That Wrote Itself - 6/10 Hold Hands And It Will Happen Anyway - 5/10 They took 14 for the rest of our lives - 6/10 Flow my tears the spider said - 6/10 60/100

I’ll drown myself if I have to listen to this again.

Album name and song titles are somewhat interesting and one hear traces of innovation and originality but it's awfully clangy and largely tuneless – basically, grating to no worthy purpose. Not many candidates for song of the summer to be found here. It sounds like music that could threaten the psyche of impressionable youngsters. Feels too precise and controlled, too, which adds to the near palpable tension. Comparisons to Radiohead are strained, to put it mildly.

I am down with experimental music. And industrial vibes. And, well, NOISE. But They Were Wrong just doesn’t seem particularly . . . mature. The lyrics have something(?) to do with witchcraft. Even if I were inclined to, I don’t think I could follow the concept. Worse, though, the sound just isn’t compelling. I’ve listened to the album twice now, but I haven’t found much I’d ever want to engage with again. Maybe a few parts of “We Fenced Other Gardens with the Bones of Our Own?” Maybe not even that.

Elmo rock. They Don't Want Your Corn is the best song.

I like odd music but didn’t dig this

2.5⭐️/5 [08.23.2025] 01.16.2026

I was never able to get too into Liars. I did like a couple of the albums that came after this one (Drum's Not Dead, Sisterworld, and WIXIW), but I didn't give any of the other ones a chance. This is my first time hearing this album. I like it just fine when it's on, but don't see myself revisiting it. Standout Track(s): Hold Hands and it Will Happen Anyway

Big concept in sound, and it's both loud, abrasive, and quiet. I wanna like this one more, so I have a feeling it will grow on me

High 2 thought id be all over this. i blame the vocalists for failing to win me over

Noise rock huh? Appropriate. Just a lot of noise to me.

1st time hearing about this band - meh

The ambition is apparent. A pagan fever dream about witch trials and hysteria. I respect it more than I want to play it. Art score = 4. But here we go 2.

This album was just alright, sorta all over the place and not really that cohesive to me. It felt like very chaotic, but in a overdosing crying out for help sorta way. Maybe that is what they were going for at the time. 4/10.

Album so ass it made me want to kill myself. Lo de Radiohead era broma, el resto no. 2/5 La portada está guapa

Weird, but not good weird

Mediocr

Thoughts before listening: I don't really know much about these guys, but I do remember when their albums were getting touted on music sites. With 49,000 monthly listeners on Spotify they don't seem to have had all that much staying power though. Probably going to be one of those 00s albums that seemed like a big deal at the time the book was produced, but probably wouldn't stay in on a revision. Review: I think that if I have learned anything from this project its that I'm just a fan of pop music. Sure I may prefer when pop music is filtered through the lens of loud, distorted guitars, but ultimately its still pop music with familiar song structures, catchy melodies, etc. The albums that tend to annoy me the most on here are the techno, noise rock, krautrock, etc albums that mess with that formula. This album is full of those elements that turn me off. Its a very tough listen, from the music to the lyrics, and while I was certainly not bored with this album, I wasn't enjoying myself all that much either. 2-stars

I respect the uniqueness but its just a bit too much

Of Montreal, but less fun about it

Not really for me.

Nope. Not for me.

If you are going to be experimenting in 2004 try and come up with something actually new rather than rehashing all the dreary experimentation that has come before.

Can confirm, is noise. 2/5

I appreciate that there is a raw energy to this album, it’s like the sound is straining to get out but then rumbling into deeper, darker noises. There’s a discordant theme throughout so weirdly it does work as an album. However. I think this is all a bit too much for my poor head. I find trying to engage with some of the songs is like trying to do quadratic equations while banging a saucepan perched on your head, and other times the very devil himself is after you. The drums on Read The Book That Wrote Itself and birdsong with eerie banging noises in the background on Flow My Tears the Spider Said will haunt me for a while.

This was like a jack hammer to my brain. It was impossible to work while this was on. I enjoyed slipnot while working so shows I have reasonable capacity to absorb the melody of "noise". At one point it felt like I was having a nervous breakdown. Nails down a black board vibe while being assaulted with yet more sound / feedback / distortion. Its like they deliberatly attempted to use the electronics "fail" state to make music then throw in volume and miss timing for destructive effect. Like a cloud moving over to briefly let the light in I did get glimpses of their musicality and even sounded a little like the chemical brothers at one point. Hold Hands and it will happen - Sounds a bit like Idles as it starts off and some songs like this did appear captivating and punk esk. Certainly potential but I think this album could be better!

gave me a headache

Álbum experimental. Roseselsa Quietsea II.

I tend to not agree with some of the lowest rated albums on this site, and as a fan of this band, I have to concede that this album is not the band's best. That being said, it's not the worst thing either. Some cool ideas that I think they fleshed out more on subsequent records.

Noise. Make of that what you will.

Forgettable

Not a fan, but I'm not upset by it.

It insists upon itself.

It was a real struggle to get through this. Almost unlistenable, though I did hear a bit of Radiohead in it.

A real mixed bag for me. Firstly I was not in the best mind space as I was too stressed and this didn’t help. Some good some bad. The bad was really bad IMO. The opening track sounded like a parody of a college kid trying to be deep. Can’t go higher than 2 here

Difficult is an understatement

I'm definitely not going to listen to this again, but I didn't hate it? I can see myself adopting 'there's always room on the broom' into my vocabulary. Probably more like 2.5 stars, but since I have to choose...

Well…I can understand why the global rating on this is so low. I didn’t care for it but for the most part, it wasn’t too egregious. It kinda sounded like if Thom Yorke had a younger brother who was deeply envious of Radiohead’s success and wanted to make it big too, except that he had no talent.

Ok for what it is, but didn’t really warm to it. Sort of like LCD Sound System…come to think of it. Complete different genre wise, but the two do seem to have a similar energy.

i like the elements, i feel i could like this if they were used in different ways.. but better to listen to something this weird as another unmemorable american or british rock band from the 60s/70s

This one really didn’t land for me. They Were Wrong, So We Drowned feels like an album caught between wanting to be an unsettling art piece and actually crafting songs worth revisiting. I get that it’s meant to be chaotic, tribal, and thematically steeped in witch trial hysteria, but for me, it just came across as noise with little payoff. There’s ambition in the concept, but the execution left me cold. I can appreciate experimental music when it still offers a hook or some atmosphere to latch onto, but most of this just felt like being stuck in a room full of clattering pans and cryptic shouting. Tracks blur together in a way that isn't immersive, just exhausting. I’m sure some will defend it as bold or challenging, but I personally found it more frustrating than fascinating. A few interesting textures, but not enough to make me want to go back.

Wow, what a unique album. They really loved their synth and sound effects. Not my speed but good on anyone that can listen to this one straight through, I had to take it in segments

I quite liked ‘Flow My Tears the Spider Said’ other than that really wasn’t a fan.

Very rough. Some songs almost had song elements that made them redeamable. But some were just obnoxious (like track 2: steam rose). This is a pretty low 2 for me.

Was not ready for this one. Listening, I feel like I had just taken 3 shots of Fireball, and desperately needed a palate cleanser. Intellectually, I see where they are going with this album, but I am just not cool enough to appreciate.

Kept waiting for something more to happen in a lot of these songs, pleasant enough but seems surprising this is considered one of the 1001 to listen to in my opinion.

Semi-interesting concept album. No need to listen again, might share with someone who identifies as a witch

Not sure if this is one of the albums “you have to listen to before you die..” or “albums that will make you die” They should though charge per letter used in their song titles.

Had a few bits I enjoyed, but overall was a bit too out there for my mood and tastes. I will not be going back to this one.

#589. Mildly annoying noise rock. The first song isn't too bad, but it only gets worse from there. 2/5: nah.

Never heard of this one. I don't think these guys were sober when they wrote these songs. 2/5

I like the album more when I moved from headphones to speakers. Also, felt a little like a cult initiation ceremony.

yeah i could die without listening to this a few tracks reminded me vaguely of radiohead but yeah not quite that good

Interesting at times, but not really for me.

A surprise for sure- and not a pleasant one. I appreciate what they were going for stylistically, but it wasnt pleasant to listen to and it really wasnt for me. Still- there were a few spots I enjoyed more, but it mostly was rough Overall- 1.5/5 to 2

Lots of noises meant to put you into a trance and feel like you’re at some sort of primal ritual. Unfortunately that isn’t a sound I enjoy.

Not as bad as I was expecting after reading the reviews.

I couldn't get on board with this one. I like making noise as much as the next guy, but I'm not a Noise guy.

Bit of a weird one. I don't know how to feel about it, but it was pretty cool. Nothing stood out really though.

Broken Witch

interesting concept for an album but ultimately not that enjoyable to listen to. i listened twice through and wanted to like this more than i did, but alas... favorites: broken witch, steam rose from the lifeless cloak, flow my tears the spider said

Not a huge fan of industrial or noise to start out so it was at a bit of a disadvantage already. There is definitely something to it that I like though. It's kinda fun in a goofy lyrics sang deadpan way. It's unique and that isn't bad. Self-indulgent, but that's expected and almost required for experimental. Sounds a tiny bit like it could be in Scott Pilgrim as well.

I get experimental but this was mediocre at best

Well it was different I'll give it that!

"This sounds like Pikmin 2!!!!!! Epic underground dandorium moment or however the pokos are acquired" - My stupid ass prior to fathoming the full extent of "Broken Witch" Hmm. Hmmmmmmmm. HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM. No sir, I don't like it. I have a penchant for weird, unorthodox, wackadoo bullshit and this is some truly weird, unorthodox, wackadoo bullshit. By all means I should like this. Experimental rock has been good before and the way this album samples sounds is endlessly creative (especially in the case of "Read the Book That Wrote Itself"). I like the mystical/folklore element and the lyrics are stupid in an endearing way. These elements are good on their own, though they don't come together into something that I can confidently say I like. My favourite tracks were "Broken Witch" and "There's Always Room on the Broom". Many of the tracks are limited by how minimal and repetitious the music is when you strip away the reverberating, blown out instrumentals, though these two tracks are surprisingly quite dynamic. The bird songs at the end of "Flow My Tears..." was a very clever way of closing out the album. I'm surprised other "nocturnal" albums haven't used a similar technique as it provides a very satisfying sense of closure. The nightmares are over. This album belongs in the book purely for how strange and out there it is - stick the kooky witch bitches on anyone that disagrees. That being said, I'm curious as to why. Let's have a looksee. Fearful and alienating. The band smoked a lot of weed. Dense and doomy. Not popular in the US, but better received in Europe. Yeah, about what I was expecting. That one squeaky, electronic loop on "They Took 14 for the Rest of Our Lives" was definitely sampled from "The Fucked Jam" by Ween. There's no way

They were wrong so so we drowned? Dudes, it's your album cover! Moving on. I like some pretty kooky shit, but this is borderline annoying. Maybe in a good way? .... Na not really. I'm not one to like weird stuff just because it's weird. I can't believe these guys have 10 albums released. I would never listen to this again on purpose. Still, better than Morrissey. Two stars.

Ja da simmer offesichtlich ned bi "1001 Albums you have to enjoy before you die". Wider nebe experimentellem geklimmpere, ufd instrument drufhaue, is mikrofon inebrülle und paar exorzisme durefüehre ned viel anders debii usecho. Bonjour surprise zum Zweiten. So öpis wür mer ohni Album Creator nöd entdecke. Wobi tbh, soviel hät mir bi dem au wieder nöd verpasst. Interessant und experimentel, abe rhalt au nur grenzwertig musikalisch. Darum gemmer das mal 2 Colombus, wills na biz lässiger isch als gester.

This is something, I'm not totally here for it, good for a change though Will I listen to again: 1%

Please drown instead of recording this crap.

Tough listen

Not a huge fan of the album. With that said, it has opened the door to this band... And I like some of their other material!

absolutely insane. very scary. it was alright. i don't think i was in the mood for it.

Great, noise rock. Why the hell did we need this category of music. Another one of the few albums on this list where I couldn't bear to listen and skipped some tracks, especially early on. It's kind of like industrial but bad, takes out any of the melody etc. of say Nine Inch Nails or something. It does get a little better as the album goes on--the first three tracks are just like a warning. Last track is kind of cool on a sailer shanty/industrial/Tom Waits level.

It was better than expected. Not really my thing though

1 point for the song titles 1 point for the attitude Do what you do guys.

There are a few Liars albums I enjoy quite a bit. This is not one of them.

I'm way more up on this than I thought I would be when I read about it, but then of course I did have super, super low expectations. Just the fact that it wasn't ear-splitting noise was a nice enough surprise. I would say it's more 'experimental music' than outright noise, but I didn't find it particularly challenging to listen to, and it's at least interesting. 2.5 rounded down.

Noise rock is not so much my thing, so it's hard to evaluate this album objectively. It might be a great example of the genre, but I can't tell. I did like the bird sounds in the last track.

Feels a little unfair to rate _this specific_ album because I suspect noise rock just isn't my thing, so I'm just going to give it a "meh" and move on with my life. On a 5 star scale it should be 2 1/2, but I can't do that on this site, but 3 is too high, so it's a 2.

"Noise rock". You're not wrong.

< The Beatles I didn't like this album at all... but i can't deny it's at least interesting.

Felt like a lack of melody.. all a bit too distorted for my liking!

Kind of atmospheric, definitely "experimental", wanders through rock, pop, industrial leanings

Interesting but I don’t think I would listen to it again.

The wiki for this album describes the genre as 'noise rock'. I don't disagree with this but would add that it is definitely not 'music rock'. One thing it does have going for it is the possibility of having the record for most total words used in the titles of all the tracks...71, which is roughly 30 more than the run time in minutes of the album. Guinness Book, am I right?

Couldn't stay engaged. I'm sure if I was at an immersive art show or something it would have been effective but I couldn't not tune this out. Rating something like this based on one listen doesn't feel fair but all these albums are rated in the same environment so I gotta keep the baseline firm. Sorry, Liars. At least you're not Metallica.

A few interesting songs, mostly not my thing.

Well, this was a challenging listen. I appreciate that they apparently are trying to overthrow conventional expectations and any pretense at normal song structures or melody. The names of the songs and album are interesting. The hypnotic rhythm was fine. The effect: restlessness, doom and resistance. One extra star for making me think about the noise. Won't listen again, willingly though.

Listened to this while driving from SLC to Vegas. After hearing the first song, Katie turned on her Airpods and started listening to a podcast. Wish I had done the same. Will be generous and give it a 2.

A loose concept album for a raucous noise group, there's little information about the album or the band when they put this out. Further leans into Australians love of heavy, dark, and weird music

Just not for me. Can’t really see a time where I would want to listen to this album. 2/5 Won’t listen again

Noise rock was noisey.

Ooooo. We can chant scary words and sound ominous while playing in minor keys!

Ahh yes, "concept" albums that have less than 1M streams on Spotify. Surely this belongs in the list, it's a creepy "let's do witchcraft on a mountain" conceptual album! That said, it does deliver on the concept of creepy witchcraft mountain music. It’s noisy and weird, but not in a fun way. Feels a bit they they forgot to tune their guitars. There are flashes of something cool, but they get buried under all the chaos. It’s mostly just messy.

Cannot rate this. It is really not for me. I simply cannot hear it and pay attention to it.

Not an easy listen overall, but it’s better that some of the other more experimental stuff on the list. Only just though!

Some decent moments on here, but overall it felt like a poor Nine Inch Nails imitation.

Nothing special..

Don't remember much about this one, just that I wasn't impressed.

bit to much of an soundscape album

industrial/noise, didn't get on with this

There must be 1001 better albums released in 2004 alone. Avoids one star because a couple of songs at least sounds like they are having fun.

They don't want corn, they want your kids (that's the one) the album is "interesting". Feels like how I would've scored The Blair Witch Project

Didn't hate it. Actually liked the nature sounds in Flow My Tears the Spider Said.

Pas mon style, mais chaque morceau est bien réfléchi. Parfois plus théâtral que musical

One will not go all the way to claim it's unlistenable, though it's close. One would be lying if one claimed to enjoy it (other than the album and song titles) or to find it worthy of this list. It's different, and challenging in a clangy sort of way, borderline artful time but mostly noisy and grating in the end.

Best Song: There's Always Room on the Broom. That chunky-funky riff at the beginning was really pleasant (even if they buried it under a high-hat for the majority of the song. Broken Witch. What a stuttering, arrhythmic way to start the album. Worst Song: Broken Witch. What a stuttering, arrhythmic way to start the album. Overall: More noise than rock. It's very abrasive (clearly intentionally so), but it does so in that upper, buzzy register that means I can't imagine when I'd want to listen to it. It's not heavy enough to satisfy the desire for heavier music, and it's not melodic at all. I struggle to imagine in which contexts or moods I would listen to this album.

A bit much and a bit irritating. Found myself not engaging very much as it was so grating

It’s an experiment rock album soooooo

224/1001 🌕🌕🌑🌑🌑

Just because its challenging doesn't mean its good. They Were Wrong, So We Drowned was probably more fun to make than it was to listen to. At least its short.

Beefheart. The more out there Fall. Pere Ubu. A listening experience, but not one that necessarily needs repeating.

nahh i couldn't do it sorry im sure (well maybe not SURE) there's a smart explanation for what they're doing here and maybe there's a function for this kind of music but it's not for me

I give it artistic merit, but it would be a lie to say I liked it. I don't hate it though, just heavily disliked it. I could recommend it to some friends who may enjoy it. Noise rock can be good, and I have yet to be proven right.

Feel like this was made to sound deliberately bad

Totally sucks but not unlistenable

Really not so bad compared to other bottom tier albums on this list. Not as noisy as I anticipated, but in the end not very memorable, not even in a bad way. Semi liked the opening track, but after it it all sounded alike after a while

Liars, everywhere... They were the liars when they thought they could create music, the list creator was the liar when they said this album was worth listening to. I will say, track 2 "Steam Rose from the Lifeless Cloak" being the musical manifestation of a migraine, that pounding feeling of blood through your veins like native drums along the Orinoco, is the only reason I didn't give this a 1 star.

Incredibly unpleasant music but... I kind of enjoyed it Given that I have listened to the last song like 10 times I think I have to give this a 2star

slightly agitated electronica

Certainly not music to relax to. Nor to enjoy. But to be threatened by? Irritated by? Distorted by? Aggressed by? Sure, yeah.

Those song titles were a load of pretentious tosh, weren’t they? There were a few times when a melody kind of grabbed me and I thought I would be carried along but just as soon it disappeared. Nothing concrete to like here. I didn’t connect with any magic.

This is some dungeons and dragons, Renfaire, LARPer music. They pose a good question about wizards and glasses.

I love the first liars album. It’s a fantastic debut and it’s funky and it’s fun and it hits hard. This one hits hard but it’s not nearly as funky and it’s not really any fun. Having said that a few songs and I kind of started to get into the darkness And the weirdness. But still never destined to be at album I really want to listen to.

I enjoyed reading about this album and the band far more than I enjoyed listening to them. One additional star for creativity.

Noise rock, dance-punk. Bastante rollo.

Has a lot of promise and good ideas, but it feels wasted on the album's needless drive to be "odd." Not so much in a way like The Residents (although comparisons could be made) but rather just taking perfectly good post-punk melodies and adding random noises to drown out the flavor. The more dance punk elements cause me to crave LCD Soundsystem, while the dissonance projected only evokes a Swans-lite palette. Sure, there are elements I like, especially in the first track, but the whole thing constantly feels like it is building up to something great, but it just falls flat and seemingly gives up, and I'm just left feeling confused.

This is hurting my head so early in the morning. Thank god I'm not hungover. Definitely randomly hearing a more unpolished James Murphy in some of these songs. I enjoyed some of those but otherwise it's a no from me dog.

What in the hell even is this. It's not like actively bad but why would anyone want to listen to this?

Day277 - if they would just take out half the noises it would be digestible

Tentativa de punk quase alegre e dançante?

Parts of this are good but overall I hate it

I really appreciate how every song sounds like a completely distinct assault on my ears.

It is decent, but not my taste

Hmmm not for me at all. Almost impossible to listen to. I am not giving it 1 star because I feel like I don't even understand what this is going for so I can't say that it's a total failure (but it might be, I honestly don't know).

Oooooook Låt två låter som ett barn som bankar på något i två minuter. (Skrev massor som försvann) Första halvan var iaf svinjobbig. Var tvungen att stänga av på låt tre (tror jag). Fick typ ont i huvudet. Var rasande efter första halvan. Andra halvan var bättre. Sista låten typ bäst (mina "noise"). Överlag inte särskilt bra.

I don’t think I get it, but I know I don’t like it.

I feel bad because I’ve been taught so much of my life that noise isn’t music. That loud wailing and screeching is just sound. I respect the people who try to form something out of that chaos. They try hard to make something they think others will like listening to. But I just don’t have the ear for it. Having listened to Kollaps last week, this is a more enjoyable experience, but it’s still not something I plan on coming back to.

I can normally do a bit of noise rock, but this seemed a bit too aimless, a bit too erratic, without anything to really hook you in. Gave it a second listen to see if I missed anything the first time, and it turns out no, not really.

Noise indeed. Repetitive, and not great.

Ehh, had a tom waits feel at the beginning and just felt like they didn’t push what they were doing far enough

Not good

man, was this album a piece of shite…

Not for me, bro. Why is it here?

Noise rock, dance-punk. Bastante rollo.

No. 235/1001 Broken Witch 2/5 Steam Rose From The Lifeless Cloak 1/5 There's Always Room On The Broom 1/5 If Your a Wizard 1/5 We Fenced Other Gardens 2/5 They Don't Want Your Corn 2/5 Read The Book That Wrote Itself 2/5 Hold Hands And It Will Happen Anyway 2/5 They Took 14 For The Rest Of Our Lives 1/5 Flow My Tears The Spider Said 2/5 Average: 1,6 Was just too out there for me.

The run of good albums had to end somewhere. Not as unlistenable as some noise rock, it still lacks melody etc.

Interesting concept, and not completely pointless to listen to, but I don't think it belongs on the list.

It's pretty hard to listen to. Almost rated 1 but still not as bad as Korn

Not an easy one to get into

It would be so nice if so many of the albums on this list weren’t shit!!

Another experimental album that is going to have a, probably deserved, low score. Is making a song with the sounds of dial-up internet a cool idea? Sure. Does it sound good or is interesting? Not really. As a metalhead this stuff kind of drives me crazy. Why does this list dive into the depths of abrasive experimental/avant-garde, but is afraid to bring to light the deep & rich variety of metal? If you're going to include music that pushes the limits of what's music, there are much more extreme examples than whatever THIS is. I guess the people need to hear the 13th best Bowie or Young album instead...

So glad I wasn't aware of this while in Year 8. Bonus star for the song titles.

It could fit with a performance art piece or as music for a serial killer or the army to play to torture someone (Steam rose from the Lifeless Cloak). I guess it is a two because at least it was organized. However my soul feels like it needs a shower now.

I didn’t care for this, it was a little too strange for me. I appreciate the conceptual aspect, and it does hang together as a complete creepy forest feeling album, but was ready for it to be over after a couple songs.

Interesting... But not worth re-visiting.

Ouch why? Track five is listenable. Make it to the half point and it gets a bit better

Cool production! Very cool. Getting more picky though, so yeah skipped thru much of this. Also tired and in London so…

I liked the song titles and it sounds like they had a blast making the record. I just wish they worked all that experimentation and industrial noise into some proper songs. But as it is, it's virtually unlistenable.

Noise noise noise, best thing is the song titles.

It wasn’t great. The album was very strange, it seemed to change a decent bit throughout. The album ends with a catchy carnival/sea shanty type song. The rest is not memorable at all. I did like the last song, so I will reluctantly give this 2 stars.

Just, no. I read this band has albums that are all very different from one another, so maybe I’ll enjoy that if it comes up, but I didn’t enjoy this one. The only reason I’m giving it a two is because I have a better understanding of what the depths of this list have to offer.

Not the worst of it's genre & better than anything by Slipknot, Beastie Boys or any of the dozens of hip hop, rap & rooooaaaar garbage that infests this list.

A little too aggressively avant garde for my taste.

I’d be a liar if I didn’t admit to being occasionally wrong here. I’ve hated on experimental noise rock from time to time over 1000+ albums, and while there’s a lot to dislike on Liars’ “They Were Wrong,” it’s not all bad. Faint praise, but I actually dug some of the noise on this album.

(Cough, cough) “Yo! did you hear that Radiohead album?? Or the new NIN record?? We could totally do that “ Or so everyone thought. It turns out that behind all the programming and oddities of Mr Reznor and Mr’s ‘Head were really, really great songwriting skills backed by extremely adept musicianship. That “drum machine and a few chords” feeling turned out to be really hard to recreate. And here we find the Liars. Sorry guys- feedback, programming and weird lyrical concepts aren’t enough. You gotta have the songs.

I should have guessed from the title that it was about witches, but they are liars so who is to really say. As I was listening to this I looked up the band a bit more and saw a description of them as Noise rock. That is pretty accurate. These tracks are just obnoxious noises. I'm usually pretty open for experimental music, but I can't imagine anyone wanting to listen to this very often. Interesting concept album, but the noise is too much for me. Favorite track "There's always room on the broom"

pretty strange. I remember trying to get into Liars in the past with no avail. Can understand why. 1.5/5

Dissonant, uncomfortable, occasionally melodic. Not awful but I was happy when it ended. Unlikely to go again.

There's some melody and an intent to be different. Just doesn't quite find it's place for me.

Weird, but not really entertainingly weird. Just kind of nothing experimental music.

Noise rock / experimental rock / dance-punk - the genre and the album's title says it all I think. I've heard worse, but not often.

You know, I can appreciate experimental music. But there should be at least some singing, somewhere. And improvisational music shouldn't feel like you can tell they're just making it up. There should be sense to it. This just feels... nonsensical. At least it's short. Next.
