I have heard the name, but I've never heard the music. I do recall seeing that they are supposedly an influence on bands I like such as Radiohead and LCD Soundsystem - so I'm excited to listen to this. 1st time through... Wow, only 4 songs for 40 minutes. This should be interesting. I listened to this all the way through before breakfast and was digging it the whole time. It definitely has a hypnotic vibe - in a great way. 2nd time through... - I kept thinking the singer is a woman but turned out it's a dude. The vocals are not very prominent in the mix. I'm not even sure what he's saying most of the time. This band seems less about the lyrics and more about the music. - I can definitely hear their influence on Radiohead and also bands like Portishead. - Kept thinking this could be great as a movie soundtrack - and then found that one of their songs (not from this album) was used in the movie "Jagged Edge" in the 80s. I'll have to check out that song. - Cool how they combine electronic synthesizers with atmospheric guitar (not blues based) and awesome drumming. I think the drumming is a standout feature on most of this. - crazy that this came out in 1973 - seems like it's influenced tons of bands from the 80s, 90s and 2000s. Future Days is a good name for this 3rd time through ... Yeah, I like all 4 of these songs and am excited to see them pop up on my automated playlists. Also interested to dive deeper into other CAN albums. This is exactly why I signed up for this album a day thing - to discover great stuff like this. Even though there are many clunkers on this list - there are some true hidden gems like this. Liked songs on Spotify: 4/4 (Perfect Album) Rating: 5/5
Ok isso foi incrível!! Adorei!
This album really changed my perception on music. My first listen to this was one of my favorite music listening experiences ever. I was completely mesmerized by the amount of detail, textural depth and the progression each song takes. 5 years later it still blows me away. The album just doesn't waste a single second, while at the same time creating some of the most impressive landscapes ever. Starts off warm and sunny with these hypnotic rhythms and groovy guitars, making you feel like you're having a lazy beach day in paradise. Then the whole thing becomes more and more psychedelic with some of the most impressive sound design ever. It's like taking LSD on that beach and the whole world becomes more and more disjointed. The grooves are absolutely insane, whether they are slow and repetitive or fast and dance-able they are just straight up addictive. I can put this album on any time and 40 minutes just fly by.
Glorious, epic, expansive explorations. One of my all time favs. Just so cool and badass. The slow intro to Future Days! Goes all over and doesn't ever rush. Jaki and Holger ♡
I very much appreciate the Can vibe. We needed Can to get to The Fall.
Did not expect this! Very chill, super creative and great vibes. Composition is superb and production quality is amazing. Very proggy, very ambient and virtuoso!
So good. One of the best albums of all time, but not even Can's best album.
There's something about the noodling on here that just pulls you under its hypnotic grasp. The sounds found here are spacy and ambient, but refuses to fall into the background. Clocking in at just over 3 minutes, 'Moonshake' is the shortest and most radio-friendly song here due to its funky reggae-infused groove. The three other songs on this album are lengthy, with 'Bel Air' running just shy of 20 minutes and taking the entirety of the second side. The way that the drumming creeps in on that track is absolutely masterful and its one of those moments that had the hairs on the back of my neck stand up. Damo Suzuki doesn't have the best singing voice, but the vocals aren't the main attraction and they add atmosphere to the overall sound. He's never front and center so its never abrasive. This was a total trip and you hear how this influenced many future artists. I can definitely see what post-Kid A Radiohead took from Can by listening to this album for example. It may be over 50 years old, but this sounds a lot more modern than it actually is.
Never heard them before, but was very curious about them. Yeah, this is very good! Will relisten very soon and looking forward to hear more from them
A 4 or 5. Can is just great.
2/19/26. Loved this. I hear a lot of groundwork laid from later works I enjoy, notably Getting Killed by Geese. Enjoyed the polyrhythms and soundscapes produced, I'll definitely come back to this.

Love this album. I've known Moonshake before, and it's still my favourite (mainly due to it being only 3 minutes long, which gives it great replay value), but the sound on this record is just amazing. 10/10 Favourite track: Moonshake
Really cool. I've only listened to Tago Mago before this, but I think that I like this one a bit more. Clearly very influential while also being developed enough to be great on its own.
Now we're getting progressive. What great fellas. Delighted to see so many 5 star reviews.
The first time I listened to Moonshake, it blew my mind. After finding out that CAN was an influence on Radiohead, I had to listen to the whole album. The energy throughout is too good. It’s just got this mystical and driving atmosphere all tied by the hypnotic rhythm, nothing like anything I’ve heard before. One of my favorite discoveries of the past couple months.
Wow! I was not expecting this when I saw the album cover. What a breath of fresh air. This project is simultaneously tight and incredibly experimental- it evokes sounds and feelings that Gorillaz albums like Plastic Beach, all while being 40 years older. I cannot get over how modern this sounds. And the production is so so crisp- the difference between this and the other 60's and 70's albums we've listened to is stark. A true work of experimental art and a wonderful find. My one gripe- the vocals are sort of more spoken word and are set back behind the mix, but I appreciate this as a general fan of alternative vocal deliveries and stylings in music. Favorite Tracks: The whole thing, no skips Experimental Krautrock Ball-Knowledge: Greatly Increased
Easily one of the strangest listens I've had in recent memory, the complex sounds presented are nonetheless vastly enjoyable. Its production manages to be absurdly deep and varied without feeling erratic. Sounds blend together and play off each other so uniquely and effectively. You've gotta love an album calling its shot being called Future Days, only for it to sound like a completely modern album for a listener like me 50yrs later. This could be released today and still be wildly interesting, innovative, and clean sounding. Each track (most at least double the avg modern song length) feels like a journey unto itself, with all sorts of unexpected twists and turns, and you're just along for the ride. I love the instrumentation and obvious southeast Asian influences, the mixing quality is phenomenal, and I feel like I could listen to this dozens of times without really cracking the surface.
Repetitive and compelling, a true benchmark for the Krautrock subgenre, a must for every record library. All hail Damo Suzuki!
Amazing album! Feels way ahead of its time. For me, it scratches the Mars Volta itch (one of my favourite bands). I'll definitely be exploring more of their back catalogue.
Great listen even with 4 songs it feels like a ethereal experience and an album that had a feeling like no other. Magical vocals that I'm still trying to interpret and the composition of all the instruments was also done well, and those drums towards the end of Bel Air led to a great closure. Overall very great album and listen. 9.5/10 Favorite Song: Bel Air
I enjoyed this, listened twice. It definitely didn’t sound like it was made in the early 70’s - very modern sound, in a great way. There were a few moments when the fast, repetitive beat poked my nerves in an unpleasant way and made me come out of the listening experience a bit. It was really just the last 4 minutes of the last song. Otherwise very enjoyable and cool. I will check out their other albums
The third of three magnificent albums by the Krautrock pioneers, "Future Days" is a hypnotic, rhythmically centered musical masterwork built around the title track and the closing "Bel Air." Few bands are able to create tracks of double digit minute length that hold your attention, but Can is one. A great album that may be Can's best.
This is a remarkable album given how old it is. You can hear so much future music in it. To the point where it makes some other stuff that was “breakthrough” in the 90s and 2000s feel derivative!
Not my favourite Can record but it’s still Can.
I just started listening to Can within the past year. They were a German experimental rock band that blended elements of krautrock, psychedelia, funk, samba, musique concrète, and space rock. They employed many ambient elements, aiming for hazy soundscapes inspired by diverse ethnic backgrounds. Their fourth album, Future Days, tapped into that cultural zeitgeist. Across three beefy tracks and one conventional song, the band was in a grooving pocket of ethereal textures. Jaki Liebezeit's polyrhythmic play alongside the soft electric guitar and bass lines maintained a level of engagement without being too overbearing in the mix. I liked the touches of organ and electric piano from Irmin Schmidt, tingling around certain passages to simulate the drifting atmosphere. Then there's Damo Suzuki's vocals, hypnotic and entrancing as he sprawled through lyrics of disillusionment and existential wonderment. All these elements harmonize into this minimalist yet expansive soundscape. Even with the more standard funk rock affair of "Moonshake", the incorporation of collected sound recordings and Suzuki's hazy delivery made for a rather otherworldly listen. The more I thought about it, Future Days went down rather smoothly. Not a moment felt wasted or prolonged. I felt thoroughly engaged throughout the runtime, particularly in the several movements of "Bel Air", as the captured sound of wind flowed through my ears. I have no complaints; therefore, this record comes highly recommended.
listed while doing HW. i don't really remember too much so i'm just going to give it 5 stars. i think it was good but idk. i'll give it 4 stars for now. actually 5. idk.
Strong 4,5
Krautrock meesterwerk. 10/10, geweldig album. On par met tago mago
i don’t knowwwwwww. i can’t explain my response to this kind of music. it’s lovely, although lovely is too flimsy and small a word…it’s just wide open feelings, warm air, cool water, something sweet and good. fav tracks: future days; moonshake
this one is sick, drumming so gud Will I listen to again: 100%
Absolutely astonishing. One of the most sonically immersive albums I have EVER heard, and it's over 50 years old! They were true innovators. A stunning delight to listen to.
my fav can
Classic 5/5, one of their best if not their best.
Highlight Song/s: Future Days I am a big fan of Davie Bowie - especially the Berlin Trilogy-era, where he was inspired by krautrock - and post-punk music. Both of those things were heavily inspired by the aforementioned krautrock and the German experimental scene in the 70s. The incredibly tight and manic drums might be my favourite aspect of all those three things (Bowie, post-punk and krautrock.) When I got "Phaedra" by Tangerine Dream, I noticed the similarities between that and Bowie and post-punk, which include some of my favourite albums, so I was a bit hyped for this album to come along; and it did not disappoint.
This is the future I want
Truly an all timer. So entrancing for its entire runtime. This album has a very unique atmosphere too and it is sublime. Every instrument adds so much color and personality. Absolutely phenomenal album.
fabulous - deep, restless and relentless
I’m just here for a funky fun time
This album is great and whoever in the comments recommended focusing on the drums, thanks because this was absolutely ridiculous. Stand out sections all throughout, and I kind of wish the songs were broken up a little more so I could add the specific parts I like to my playlist, like the first half of Bel Air or back end of Future Days. Moonshake is also really good. Can did a good job of setting itself aside from all the other psychedelic jam bands, creating something that still captures that acid feel while highlighting their own style.
Krautrock: the Beach Episode
Exceptional musicianship and deeply intricate. This hit all the right notes for me
Four tracks that all have something for me to dig. It's generally a very vibe-based album. The drums in this band are essential to leading the long and winding textures present. I would call it "ambient chaos" in my book. (8/10, 5 on this scale)
Awesome. Listened twice in a row
Mood music, in the best ways.
Krautrock is one of those genres that should make a comeback in some way. 4.5 bumped up to 5.
I’m at a 4.5 that I’ll bump up to a 5. Yeah, that’s a lot different from Tago Mago, and a bit of a middle ground between that album’s noisy chaos & the vague plunderphonic-y approach to Movies. This is way closer to an instrumental album, with the vocals/lyrics having a really minimal presence, mainly used to give some texture. I think it’s an approach that works; this is more traditional than anything Can-adjacent we’ve gotten so far, so the “unique” factors are stripped away in favor of more ambient sound design and ever-growing layers of instruments on each track. So, much like a Cocteau Twins album, I suppose my analyses really boil down to “it sounds really good, but sometimes it’s a little bland”. I don’t have the ear to critique the technical aspects of some of the more stunning drum or guitar solos here, but I can tell you that they’re always interesting, at the very, very least. I didn’t give the same space to the lyrics/vocals as I normally would, but they’re fine, I suppose. The sound design works really well for some of the more “real world” aspects of the album, mainly in the city/metro stuff, and I think they enhance the tracks well. Really, I have no major complaints about the content of each track, just a minor one that really bites throughout the whole thing: this album really spins its wheels on its solos. They all go just a little bit long, to the point where the allure starts to fade, though it never gets to a point where it totally loses its shine. The space in between those solos is filled really nicely, and the solos themselves hit like crack when they first pop in… but they do go just a little long. It’s really apparent on “Bel Air”, which is a 20 minute track that could’ve probably been cut down to like, 15 or 16 minutes if some of that wheel-spinning got trimmed. I love it as a finale, and I think it stays engaging throughout, but it’s not as engaging as it could be. That’s basically why I’m at a 4.5, and not a flat 5, though I do think I wouldn’t blame anyone for going down to a 4 or even a 3 because of that. It’s valid if you’re not that captivated by these soundscapes, as there is a bit of homogeneity to the instruments that also sort of bites throughout the album. It didn’t ever really get to a “first minute-y” critique for me, but it does become noticeable eventually. One’s ability to tolerate or ignore that is what’ll set the tone for a score here, and for my tastes, I think I tolerated it enough here that it never became a big issue. Overall, I liked this – not the breeziest 40 minutes, but a pretty darn good 40 minutes all the same, hence the bump up to a 5.
112/1089 - Great drummer. Vocals are very quiet and it adds to the "spaciness." Hits the right balance of experimental and familiar to me.
Very original.
Well this was absolutely delightful. From what I remember the other Can album we listened to was wayyy experimental and a bit of chore to listen to. This album still eschews typical song conventions, but in a less challenging manner. The four songs that make up this album are drawn out expositions that explore space in a jammy, jazz-fusion adjacent atmosphere. The whole thing feels a bit to me like Miles Davis (circa Bitches Brew) fused with Grateful Dead and early Pink Floyd. I love all of those things individually and appreciate the end results here. Future Days has a sunny and beachy vibe about it -- love the guitar tone and layered atmosphere upon which they have some distorted vocals interspersed. Spray is the one that brought Bitches Brew to mind. I think a lot of that has to do with the organ usage that is almost sonically identical. Some eerie underpinnings here that I absolutely love brought about by the eerie strings and burried vocals. Moonshake is a goofy one that sounds vaguely funky in the same way that Talking Heads do. Also is the only one here that complies with any sort of structure and has coherent vocals. Bel Air takes the entire second side in a wandering jam opus. I'm already predisposed to jam music and am happy to flow along with this one. The drum shuffling keeps things moving and the guitar throughout is very nice. As for rating, I've listened to this straight through 3 times now and have not grown the least bit tired. For me this is a new love. 5 / 5
I liked the chill, pretty take on this album compared to the funk groove of the previous one. Nice contrast. You could listen to this one on the beach.
finally something unique and interesting
A colossal achievement: four perfect, convention-defying songs that in 1973 saw decades into the future.
Hele goeie shit, zeker voor die tijd. Ambient / experimental rock-ish.
This album is incredible and reinforces my belief that Can is one of the greatest bands of all time.
One of those albums that gets you high just by listening to it. Magic.
Strange. It is not as good as their second album but for fucks sake. It is still fucking good.
It's very avant garde and leans towards prog. So yes it might upset a few people. Not me. I loved it. Absolutely brilliant albeit strange and fascinating. It's a trip but this could be made today and sound modern. This is the type of album that belongs in the book. Not commercially popular but an adventurous ride for those willing to dare take it.
4 songs in 40 minutes. This is brilliant.
I need this on vinyl.
Alright this took me on a whole ride Track 1 - music for drinking wine to Track 2 - Trippy music that feels like you're in a colourful trance Track 3 - it's giving "drinking out of a coconut with an umbrella in it" vibes Track 4 - Feels like you're running but not getting anywhere
I rate future days a 5 star because it sounds dark/jungle and the bongos are very good and all the instruments sound good ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. I rate moonshake a 5 star because it sounds and the drums are very good and all the instruments sound good ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐. I rate bel air a 5 star because it sounds and the drums are very good and all the instruments sound good ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐.
Interesting rhythm heavy jams.
I am bound to the past apparently. I really liked this album. I have never heard of this group.
great rock music. I love the whispering vocals. Songs are long. good rock album.
New to me and great long form music
kreisiviikko jatkuu, ylläpitö päätti nakkaa sellaista eeposta peräjälkeen että oksat pois... mitä vittua tapahtui 70-luvun alussa musiikille???? im only 8 years old but love the vibes.
I wasn't so sure about this at the start. But I ended up loving this. It's incredible.
I liked this a lot
Hadn't heard of this band before, but rather liked this album and had to keep reminding myself that it originated from the early 70's. Very experimental with a rock and trippy ambient vibe. The last track Bel Air (which took up the whole of side 2 on the vinyl version I read) is almost 20 minutes long but sounds like 4 tracks all merged into one, even so, it just leaves you wanting more. I'll explore this band further- another gift from the "album a day generator!" This album for me is definitely a keeper.
Drums Drums Drums Drums Drums Drums Drums Drums Drums DRUMS DRUMS DRUMS DRUMS DRUMS DRUMS DRUMS WOW
I feel like this Can gets slept on, because it follows two unimpeachable classics. But it is pretty great as well. The grooves are a little smoother, not as much cacophony this time around.
Fucking Can! I, of course, was comparing this to Tago Mago. Tago Mago had the half that blew me away, and then the half that was very noisy and I did not like. This didn’t have the second half to it, so I just compared it to the first half of Tago Mago. The first half of that album was 5+ stars. This wasn’t as good, but I still enjoyed it as good. As I listened, I was between 4 and 5 stars…but Moonshake and Bel Air got it the 5. I listened to this two times in a row.
Future Days is a solid album by a unique and original band. I’m truly charmed by this group, which seemingly produces wonderfully casual music with effortless ease while remaining averse to convention. Their blend of Krautrock and avant-garde sounds can sometimes seem fragmentary, but Can also has a rhythmic quality that makes it swing. The music often elaborates on various motifs, and in between those, all sorts of soundscapes and bizarre noises emerge. What stands out, possibly due to the excellent remastering, is how timeless the album sounds. The opener and title track, as well as the incredible Bel Air, would not feel out of place in today’s musical landscape. It’s clear that much of this music came from jamming and spontaneity, yet everything sounds very organic and musically exemplary. I thoroughly enjoyed this on a late Wednesday afternoon.
Oh no, only four tracks total? Oh wait, this is pretty great. Moonshake in particular has a lot of shake and a whole lot of charm. This must be the least dated sounding 70's album on this list. So glad I heard it.
This was a cool album to hear. The last one I listened to had moments of experimental chaos, but this one leans more into ambient rock. It’s not exactly slow, just laid-back and chill. The music takes you on a dreamy, hypnotic journey. The beats are steady and consistent, with a tribal-like feel that really enhances the album’s trance-like vibe.
What a discovery! I had never heard of Can, how is that possible? I truly enjoyed this album. Fantastic soundscapes, never a dull moment, an eclectic mix of styles (there isn't a genre not mentioned on the Wikipedia page) but is fits together coherently. Some nice grooves too. Cleverly made but not in a show-off way. I will definitely listen to this again, buy it, explore the band. Thank you 1001 Albums, this is why I do it.
That was so good that I have already downloaded their entire discography to work my way through this weekend.
Part 3 in the insane trilogy of albums that Can released in just 3 years, they were just on a completely different level in that time. This might be my favourite of the three, this one just feels so cohesive as an album. It has a dreamy atmosphere surrounding it with a little less of the wild experiments you got on 'Tago Mago', but still all the incredible performances of the other albums. And so the first 3 tracks on here are amazing, don't get me wrong, but it's the monstrous 20 minute 'Bel-Air' that steals the show. Possibly the quickest song of that length i've ever heard, it goes by in an instant, it's that good.
It's been a rough streak, with 6 albums in a row scoring 3 or less, so as soon as i saw this come up, I was relieved. To be clear, I'd give this a five rough streak or not. Amazing drumming/percussion.
Future Days is Can's final album during their "classic" period, before their vocalist decided to leave the band to pursue a life of religious fulfillment. The title track (and album opener) is a spacey trip that basically defines what the genre Krautrock was all about. It, along with most of the album as a whole, relies more on rhythm and texture rather than melody to create the music. Even the vocals are more of a fifth instrument rather than something to lead the melody. Compared to many of the other releases of 1973, they held their own in the way that they pushed boundaries in a different direction than the others. 'Moonshake' sounds like it could be the only single off of here, with the appropriate clock-in time of under 4 minutes. The highlight for me is Bel Air. Taking up the whole of side two, it perfectly balances the great rhythm section Czukay / Liebezeit (whose druming on this track makes him one of my favorite drummers) with the textures created by the other three. The track is also broken up into multiple sections with a return to the first section at around the middle and the end. This album is a perfect bridge between the experimental and the accessible. That makes it my favorite can album and an easy 5 for me.
Let's go! First time listening to CAN and I can't believe how much I enjoyed this. Have not done a re-listen or read the wiki etc. so maybe I'll find some faults but damn... I have a feeling I'll be listening to this one for a while. One thing that stood out was "Spray" sounded like Bitches Brew to me.
Jouuuuu Mitä helvettiä aivan saatanan hyvä albumi ja mukavaa rattoisaa musiikkia en pysty käsittämään mitä tuli kuunneltua kun tässä koodaushommia samalla mutta ymmärrys CAN bändin taidoista piirtyy päähän.. viimenen albuimen yhtä uskomatonta ihanaa päähän sakkaavaa kakkaavaa musiikkia lutka -putka LÄÄH PUUH
Very interesting
Absolutely excellent, groundbreaking tunes and an addictive listen.
9/10. Very unique & interesting. Topped the solo Holgar Czukay stuff I listened to previously fairly easily. Much more consistently good. This style of music is tougher for me to rate but overall I was a big fan.
The first very unexpected find. Might not be an enjoyable listen all of the time, but it was tonight. Sounds of Radiohead for sure, and surprisingly modern given the release date. Excited to hear more of this band someday.
Is Khruangbin just Can with a Xanax problem?
damn
# Playlist track - Moonshake # Notes - This is a *really* cool album. There are some very endearing moments and you get really get lost into the nonsensical vocals and the flowing instrumentals. - The opening track, Future Days, reminds a lot of [[Air, Moon Safari]] - Definitely recommend to listen to this at least a couple of times. - Having the fact that it was released in '73 in perspective makes it even more interesting.
Future Days is the fourth studio album by Can, originally released in 1973. Working through this list has introduced me to Can, and they have quickly become one of my favorite discoveries. Future Days sees the band move in a more spacey direction, utilizing their instruments to create more ambient feels within the songs. The record only contains 4 tracks, with the final track being an over 20 minute long jam! The rhythm section really makes this band - the bass and drums are so locked in throughout the whole record. There are lots of moments on here that remind me of one of my other favorite bands, the Grateful Dead. The influence is especially prominent in the guitar tones, specifically on the second track "Spray".
I like Can. Very good album.
What was yet another phenomenal achievement in the dizzy dizzy career of Can wound up becoming the final chapter in a six part story. Although not as thoroughly explosive and innovative as the prior two albums, Future Days upholds an atmospheric calm that feels just as impactful. Can's increasingly noticable aptitude for crafting pop melodies are sandwiched between the bookending sonic adventures and it does not take away from the overall goal of the record, which was to present another side of the group that was often given in small doses. Ultimately, whether intentional or not, Future Days ended up becoming the beginning of the end for Can as the soon-to-be influential pillar of the new German motorik/kosmische scene for they would wade through uncharted waters that got murky in passage. Yet this is still an essential document that showcased why being in a German band in the 1970s was an exciting place to be for the sake of future days.
I could listen to this era of Can all day. It’s absolutely gorgeous.
I'm absolutely sure that this album, as well as the rest of Can's catalog, clicks instantly with certain people, but I've only discovered Can's album is a sonic groove that goes over my head with every initial listen. To combat this, I've basically tuned myself so that I can expect to listen to any of their releases multiple times before I fully form any opinion. Yes, Tago Mago's length does scare me with this ruleset, and yes, I realize I should be doing that with most albums, that's a flaw I'm willing to acknowledge, but I will do very little to fix it, and for that I apologize. But I digress, once I get over this first listen hurdle, that's when I know the fun is truly about to begin, and this album does not disappoint. In fact, I would say in general that it absolutely blew my expectations out of the water, with that repetitive yet hypnotizing beat sucking me in almost instantly once I had accepted my fate, and under that spell I was album to see this album for its subdued attempts of making sure the listener is just having a good time. Yes, it may be niche in its exterior presentation, but on the inside you discover a perfect blend of the naturalistic sounds of the jungle with the robotic discotheque found on every street in the year 3000. You may have to sift around a little for those truly magnificent nuggets, until you realize you've been panning for gold on a river of the stuff. Every note, every decision, the correct one. An album to make you dance, an album to make you lay in bed and contemplate, and maybe an album to make you (awkwardly) do both. What I'm saying is this may not be the near perfect psych-pop showcase that is their Ege Bamyası project, but it still goes somewhere beyond that. I'm entranced, and I'm loving every second of it.
Surprisingly entertaining.
Very trippy/trancey. Reminds me a bit of that more modern/electronic Tanto Tempo record this site just reccommended. Crazy that it came out in the 70s it feels super ahead of it's time for that reason. Bands like Animal Collective definitely seem to carry this style of torch with the really trippy jams. With the technology they're working with at the time I can't imagine how crazy this must've been to record/just how generally wild it sounds. 5 stars for being super unique sounding still to this day. Future Days really is an apt title.
So good, I'd maybe underappreciated this in the past - rock solid throughout and possibly their most consistent album
I'm not sure why (probably my own silly prejudices) but I expected a really dark sounding album with industrial textures. But it was actually a very breezy album with a tropical feel. There's only 3 lengthy tracks and a shorter one called 'Moonshake'. Although the tracks have a repetitive nature, there's enough movement and variations to keep me engaged. It's jazz/soundtrack/floyd vibe is very cool and although it was recorded in1973, it sounds modern. This would be a perfect album to listen to sunbathing on the beach, and it probably explains why the Germans always look so relaxed :)
What a delight. Proper band work, varied and tight. I listened as I walked through sunny fields and a birdsong overdub is recommended for the next remastered release!
This could be a 2024 album. Great production magnetic and enjoyable! 5
Amazing. Great atmosphere. Hard to believe this was made in 1973. There is definitely that experimental vibe. Really glad I listened to this.
Once again, thanks to this list I discovered a band I heard of through a full listen to an album and became mesmerized. After listening through twice, I jumped into some other albums by Can and will be adding their short discography to my listening schedule. 5/5
Second album by Can on this lost, also second with Damo Suzuki at the vocals, although he is the most forgettable part of the band. But what I learnt by listening to this record, is that Can might be my favourite band from the 70s. I have no idea why it is sometimes labelled as Krautrock, when the only thing in common with this genre is the country of origin. For me this is the quintessential psychedelic sound. When I think of psych rock, I think "Bel Air" from now on. Amazing album, great band, criminally underrated (because I have never heard of them before).
So groovy and angular, it keeps trying to get you out of its own grooves.
Wybitny album
Kova
epic, epic, epic
Good Laid-back background music with sparse whispered lyrics I couldn't understand, which are the best for laid-back background music.
fuck yea
Can is a German, experimental rock band that produced beautiful, mesmerizing soundscapes. The tracks on Future Days have an atmospheric, ethereal quality, with a richness that comes from impressive musicianship and intricate composition. The complexity of their work supports their longer tracks; "Bel Air" clocks in at almost twenty minutes. Can was clearly influential; it is not surprising that Radiohead notes that Can was an influence. Can's music also seems like a precursor to a number of electronic music styles.
I’ve never quite been able to understand why I like Can as much as I do, but this is just inarguably brilliant
I did love this and the amospheres it created. It's much less "crazy" than Tago Mago (should I say "eclectic" instead?) but that was just fine with me today. A perfect album for a Sunday afternoon.
This was a new and pleasantly interesting listen for my ears today.
Once again I am surprised at how current this band sounds. Very very enjoyable and interesting.
This was a somewhat offbeat, airy, and unique listen. A nice change of pace. I loved it!
Beautiful, ethereal soundscape. And with drums that are basically the lead instrument! This album is what this whole website is all about.
This sounds like the future no matter what days you call your own.
4 songs in 40 minutes. This is brilliant.
It's less iconic and recognizable than their classic album Tago Mago but it's easier to get lost in. You may find that you even start dancing to it unconsciously.
I think this is everything I want in an album. Groovy, goofy, and glorious! I'll be revisiting this often. 5 stars!
Tago Mago was always my go to, but this album definitely has a place in my rotation. A mellower vibe. This is a beautiful work.
the energy of live music being played around the corner fron the spot you're vibing in
GOD BLESS CAN AND CAN ALUMS. RIP SUZUKI. this one's a little less memorable/earwormy than *Tago Mago*, but extremely good, and Can remains consistently top-tier among the bands featured on this list
I've been listening to this album for a few years now. I'm a big fan of the motorik drum beat.
Such a great album!
Really cool stuff, I think the German avant era really speaks to me a lot, but I would say this maybe gets a low 5.
Amazing unique album that gets better with every listen - drumming is unbelievable.
Yes yes yes. This is insanity.
We need more white men to get high and write 20 minute long songs
Heja Jaki !
Very free from, chill, playful
Awesome album
Some of the best Krautrock
Impresionante.
Kul!
I enjoyed this a lot more than when I first listened to it many years ago. It is on the more challenging side of Krautrock but it still had the drive and sonic experimentation that made it so influential. I will probably listen to this again as I think there are more layers to be unpeeled.
Holy shit, the drumming on ‘bel air’ is legitimately insane. Just that the relentless groove can be maintained for the entirety of the song whilst everything else is noodling around it. It’s so frenetic and unceasing, his arms must have been dead by the end of it. The rest of the album is good but that last song is way really sold it to me and takes on this otherworldly nature that is almost hypnotic by the end.
Much more laid back, psychadelic jams
Super cool album. Aldrig hørt om dem før
Lyder så lækkert! Godt valg af Can plade!
Surprenant
This was much better than the previous album I heard from them :)
Scheiße I'm Close to The Edge 3.8/5
It’s like a German Fishmans
It's like the full soundtrack to a bond movie. Often wordless. An experience. Good.
This is an absolutey excellent record the only failing of which is the band that made it. That's not to disrespect Can, but to raise up their other work - which trumps Future Days. That's quite a feat considering how rock solid this album is. 4 stellar Krautrock tracks that serve as a great intro to the genre, you can't get much better. But Can, can.
Very interesting percussion. An album that I think I like talking about more than listening to.
The Fall are a favourite, and Mark E Smith’s adoration of Can means I know this album well - and love its rhythm feel and vibe. Moon shake is my favourite track.
At first I was like, CANNOT but as I went on it pulled me in and wouldn't let go so it turns out not only that I CAN but also that I COULD and I WOULD
"I prefer Holger Czukay's solo stuff better than his work with Can," is now a thing I can say. Thank you generator...I suppose
This is my kind of jam. In my mind I was in a very hip hotel’s cocktail lounge - and I liked it.
I honestly had no idea what to expect going into this but I was not disappointed in the least. Genuinely cool music. Very atmospheric, full of ambitious creativity, and each song flows effortlessly in its progression. My only complaint, I suppose, is it’s pretty understated. It doesn’t have those standout moments that define tracks in progressive rock albums. Still solid though
Very good. Not quite great.
An album worth listening to. One of the founders of Krautrock. This album is chill, ambient, semi-structured, experimental music with jazz, blues and rock influences. Future Days is mellow and reminds me of Radiohead when there is singing. Spray is more experimental. Moonshake is more typical of a CAN songs songs. Parts of Bel Air are a bit out there for me. The drummer Jaki Liebezeit is great... continous in a good way. The creator of motorik.
Absolute peak weirdo tropicali-kraut VIBEitude.
Another band I've heard of but knew nothing about. My assumption was that they were kinda industrial or something along those lines. But then I saw the year the album came out and truly had no clue. What it turned out to be was the perfect album for the day. I woke up in a foul mood and this was either going to keep me there or at least possibly lift it up a bit. When I'm in those moods I generally prefer something that fits where I'm at rather than something poppy or upbeat. This was moody and atmospheric and a bit all over the place. And from 1973!! How cool that something that sounds so 90's came from the early 70's! No bad songs on the record, but Moonshake was the weakest for me, as it sounded more from the time than the rest. I was glad it was the shortest track.
fine album 4.8 almost 5 bc i dont think ill listen to it after that much
Wildly psychedelic.
like seriously wtf. i guess its ok but i kinda feel like i got high listening to this 4/5
I was set to not like this album but as the album progressed it got better. Had a Radiohead vibe
8.5/10 really enjoyed this. Sent me down a Krautrock rabbit hole that was pretty cool
Pleasant ambient
Experimental rock with groove, four tracks, 40 minutes, epic!!
An enjoyable listen. Sounds amazingly fresh given its over 50 years old. A virtuoso drum performance. Not quite a 5 for me as none of the four songs really connected or made it onto any of my playlists but a very pleasant listen none the less.
I need to listen to these guys more.
9 / 10
Genuinely fire. Felt so relaxed but entertained and stimulated while listening to this. Don't know if I can get behind calling the last track a 20 minute song when really it's like at least 3 pretty distinct songs put together but that's fineeee
this album cooks like an overnight stew
dude germans were Cooking in the 70s
Catchy
This was cool and improved once I got in the car vs sitting in the office. Lots of fun layering and effects. Could have been condensed a little but I respect the indulgence.
Future Days? More like, still future days! This was really good, parts sounded very modern, but other parts felt of its time in a good way. I continue to have my definition of krautrock expanded.
Trippy and immersive, chilled out but intense, spacey and atmospheric but very present and lively. Warm and organic in timbre even as it slides into a robotic machinic trances of hypnotic rhythm. Choatic performances, songs that clatter and fall apart and reemerge in a new form.
Not heard much of Can previously. This was a lot more chill than I expected.
This album was not what I expected. I expected something more noisy or messy, but this is a pretty chill prog album that is very well done and put together. I really liked it, and it feels almost ahead of its time compared to so much prog at the time that was much more fantastical and outlandish or "showy" and loud.
This is gonna be an album you will either love or hate. Love ambient grooves.
Enjoyable listen, I liked this one.
Strange, drifting, and quietly gorgeous. It doesn’t offer hooks so much as an atmosphere—hazy, hypnotic, and a bit alien. Not an album for everyone, but if you let it unfold at its own pace, it becomes something oddly beautiful and deeply immersive.
Relax
Strange yet funky. Didn't leave a huge impact, but I quite liked it for what it was. Spray was my favorite track.
Yes you can! Gern grad 4 vo dene min Rache abeballere
Oh! This seems very accessible! Compared to Tago Mago, it's like they could have been aiming for increased sales - I hope they did well with any such ambition :-) Just four songs across just 40 minutes - but they're good songs. (Compare to the leisurely digital sprawl of Hayley Williams clocking in at 100 minutes for one 'album' - oh well.) "Future Days" is (at least) Very Good, 8/10.
Really liked it. Another album ahead of its time
Lowkey good
Breezy and jammy. Future Days is the beautiful cross between German psychedelic music and electronic tropical experimentations. I love that the lore for this is just "the band went on vacation to tropical climates and that inspired the album," because it shows. There's less emphasis on writing songs with vocals, so the ambient elements from previous albums take center stage on Future Days, but there's still the driving motorik rhythms. So delightful, so pleasant!
This is great, a bit of a slow burner but it's full of atmosphere and there's enough variation in tone and vibe across the album's 4 tracks to keep things interesting. I especially like Spray for it's slightly eerie feel, and Moonshake sounds like post-punk played in a smokey jazz bar.
Really fantastic, spacey and atmospheric krautrock. Tago Mago probably still has the edge for me, but this is wonderful.
Hard to believe this was made in 1973. The vocals are terrible in a few places, but the instrumental work is very cool.
Super jammy, super experimental krautrock. I dig it.
Interesting listen. Calm, ambient, atmospheric, relaxing. I'm not blown away, but I enjoyed listening.
I see a lot of people consider this the best Can album and as much I respect its influence and its honestly-highly-ahead-of-its-time nature, I have never been able to fully gel with this one like Tago Mago or Ege Bamyasi. I think I even prefer Monster Movie to this one. But still, if you want something incredibly hazy, surreal and atmospheric with enough rhythmic variety and controlled chaos to go around, this is your band and especially your album. This sounds like early morning fog during a misty rain.
Drew me in on the first listen and love the ambient/prog meandering. Very different to what I knew of them.
It's the future. I've tasted it.
A perfect soundtrack for pondering when you have racing thoughts
I enjoyed the sounds and textures, i think i would come back to this album
Innovative for 1973
Love it but perhaps only because I know my mom would hate it
I like a lot of progressive rock, so it’s odd this took me so long to find. This is excellent. It isn’t easy listening, but it isn’t especially difficult either: no more so than a lot of Pink Floyd, particularly their Meddle / Atom Heart Mother era. One difference between Can and Pink Floyd is Can's groove. As an example, on “Future Days,” especially in the later stretch where the bass locks in with hand percussion, there’s a rhythmic feel that’s almost funky. You would never hear this with Pink Floyd, but it works well. That pulse keeps the music grounded even when it drifts into more abstract territory. Damned good stuff. Most of the albums in this project, I listen to once, typically think "good, not great" and then never listen to again. I've already played this four times, and it won't be the last. Four stars.
4/5
This album is just fun and frenetic. Great stuff.
intrigued by this tone in the grand scheme of krautrock :P favorites: moonshake; bel air
Album can and indeed does absolutely bang, lots of potential for a 5
did not have much hope going into this album but it did surprise me it was pretty cool seeing where the songs were heading In definitely a fun listen
Enjoyed that, never heard of them, will delve into the back catalogue a bit more
Their fourth album. Art Rock / Psychedelic Rock. An album and group I'd not heard of until today. I am blown away that an album from '73 is structured this way. It sounds futuristic even in 2026. I loved the sounds and atmosphere it gave me. The drumming is just superb. A really good new discovery today with this album.
Love this moody album. This is the kind of music I’m hoping to discover! Hidden gems I wouldn’t know about.
Great album. Track 3 a clear highlight. And the drumming on every track is outstanding
When it's good it's great, but it does meander in parts. Very strong 7/10
Now this I CAN get into.
Right when I saw that it had four tracks totaling 40 minutes, I already knew I would enjoy this nonsense. And then I did.
Another weird one but aptly named. High 3? Solid background listening but nothing grabs me
Loved the first song, the others are a slight drop off but a great innovative album
Second album I've been introduced to from this (previously unknown to me) group and I'm digging it! Lots of experimentation still, but the changes between (and within) songs seems less jarring than on Tago Mago. Overall, it creates a nice flow from start to finish.
i feel like i’m in a jungle taking part in a ritual
How cool is Can? Ahead of their time on many fronts. I find the drumming to have a modern sound and rhythm. I already started listening to more Can.
not a bad track and future days (title track) is the best can has to offer
Not bad.
Prog rock is definitely my cup of tea and this was an easy rating.
Really cool
Enjoyed this mostly instrumental sound album. Creative and chill. Good for a morning commute.
𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘴 presents Can at their most serene and immersive, drifting into an ambient, liquid sound world where everything feels carefully blended. It’s bittersweet knowing this was Damo Suzuki’s final album with the band, because his understated presence fits perfectly into this softer, more atmospheric direction. Jaki Liebezeit’s drumming is the quiet marvel of the record — precise, fluid and hypnotic without ever calling attention to itself. While it doesn’t hit the same heights of wild creativity as 𝘛𝘢𝘨𝘰 𝘔𝘢𝘨𝘰, 𝘍𝘶𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘦 𝘋𝘢𝘺𝘴 is still a beautiful, transportive listen that shows just how elegantly Can could evolve.
Can's Future Days is a great blend of krautrock, space and electronica - it's a progressive, complex yet calming album with beautiful, hazy soundscapes. I need to listen to it again because the setting wasn't ideal for it today, but for now it's 4 stars (at first listen I preferred Tago Mago to this).
This was so unexpected! I loved it!
Took a bit to get into, but great album, great percussions.
Only 4 tracks??? Holy prog??? Anyways it felt like a short yet sweet album for the Christmas Eve times, very silly yet almost very groovy instrumentals that just felt like a fun time. 8/10
At this point, Can is mostly interested in dabbling with the arcane art of making ambient soundscapes that they flirted with on earlier releases. Is it a successful endeavour? You can say so. It starts with the self-titled track, which already tells us that these guys aren't here to fuck around. Future Days is a proto-Stereolab ambient banger, with a good use Damo's vocals, who have now been reduced to a part of the instrumental collage across the entire album, rather than being a main point of emphasis. Spray is a funky percussion heaven. The use of multiple percussion instruments weave this tribal rhythm into Jaki Liebezeit's phenomenal tour de force performance. Moonshake is the shortest, and the most faithful track to the original formula of the early music of Can. Here, Czukay's bass shines bright, with its metallic twang and murky, deep sound. Bel Air is the longest track. Touching on the main characteristics of ambient music with a dash of experimentation in a "Can way" (even managing to sound like The Rolling Stones and The Velvet Underground at moments), it's a blissful experience to listen to. Claustrophobic and wide open, with a lot of optimism inside it. Can successfully pushed the envelope on this one, with Future Days now being hailed as a benchmark album most artists only dream of making. It's a shame that the band's future days weren't as prolific though.
Can grooved, so Radiohead and Portishead could funk
Such a fun ride
Sounds like Brian Eno meets Pink Floyd
You can see how they influenced Radiohead. Really interesting stuff here - some of the more Ambient tracks aren’t for me but the production is impressive especially for its time.
The songs are long but fun and funky in their own distended way.
Never heard of Can before. What an odd and unique experience. Experimental soundscapes aplenty.
3.5
I thought based on the first couple minutes that this would one of those albums that’s just a collection of BS ambient noise passed of as a lazy attempt for art, but this group proved me wrong. This is an incredible ambient album, they were so good at creating mood an emotion without words, I’m very impressed.
First song good. Need to listen more.
never heard this before , it’s great and incredibly ahead of it’s time . 4
I loveeee long songs like this. Yeah sure, the whole 3-4 minute formula will always work, but taking a song being progressive to the next level is just an amazing experience. You can really fully explore everything that's going on and it really feels like there's no limit to how deeply you can layer different sounds and instruments.
Great music to have on in the background while I worked but u don’t think it could truly hold my attention alone.
Love
Love a bit of Can
Love Can. Great album by them. Definitely not for everyone. But the friggin groove on Future Days is so good.
Well that got under my skin, into my head and down to my feat
This was more atmospheric than I would have thought.
Tämähän oli menevää progea! Ei huono 4/5
I’ve listened to this several times over the years. It’s very good but doesn’t grab me; it doesn’t stick. Four songs, one of which, the 20 minute “Bel Air” fills side two. Prog rock? Krautrock? It’s certainly progressive, ambient, jazzy and funky, but not really in a jazz or funk sense. At times it is reminiscent of Miles Davis’s In A Silent Way, at others King Crimson. The rhythm section are excellent, particularly the drumming. The drones and extended chords, and Damo Suzuki’s weirdly laconic vocalisations, are interesting. I like the album, I’m just not sure it’s ever going to grab me.
I had no idea what to expect from this album. Right away I was hooked. I was impressed by the amount of instruments and the variety of them. I was not disappointed as the music started and everything from chill, dreamy, ethereal songs, to funky bass, drum driven, and electronic futuristic sound effects filled my ears. My favorite song is the longest, Bel Air, and my least favorite is the very short Moonshake. Overall a great album!
Dope album but again, songs too long
very groovy!
Well, this is all kinds of awesome. It was released in 1973 but still sounds startlingly contemporary and timeless, ranging from dreamy ambient flow states to full on freakouts, with metronomic drum beats, electronic sound effects, abstract vocal stylings and noodling keyboards in the mix. Parts of this genuinely sound like trip-hop dance music released this year. With typical boneheaded reductionism this got labeled as simply ‘Krautrock’ by the UK music press but there’s a lot more going on here than just a motorik beat. Can-tastic!
Lots of 9 min just music songs, not really my type.
Had never heard of Can. Really enjoyed this.
classic
Kraut Rock excellence!
7/10
Oh Wow! I was expecting prog rock and got krautrock! It's super-fantastics. Like the entrance exam for 4AD.
this was pretty cool throughout but that last song made it great. super trippy and experimental but never getting hard to listen to. a 20 minute behemoth to close out the album. right up my alley
Interesting musical exploration that appeals to my "prog-rock" sensibilities.
This is amazing. It's prog, it's funky, experimental, art-pop, jazzy, psychedelic. Apparently Radiohead were inspired by this when recording Kid A and Amnesiac and that definitely checks out. Seems like just about everyone in the post-punk genre were influenced by this. Strong 4
this is really cool! i don't have much to say but it was very pleasant.
3 blinks off the Pen Stiller and this >>>
83/100. A great example of what happens when musicians with chemistry lean into groove, texture, and instinct. The whole album has a warm, underwater feel to it. Sounds fade in and out, melodies drift, and vocals are treated more like textures than direct messages.
Can is a great Krautrock band and this album shows that Krautrock can be very experimental. This is more ambient than anything else. I love the usage of the bass in Bel Air. I don't know about all of it, some bits seem than a bit meandering.
Genuinely interesting. Bold to devote half the album to a single track. It felt like I went on a journey, which is great. Interesting rhythms and harmony throughout the album, combined with good and quite experimental instrumentation and production.
This felt like something a bit different. I don't know how influential or important it actually is, but was far more interesting than a couple of hits + filler
Light, breezy and a good listen. Certainly interesting, mix of genres in places.
I would have never guessed this was from 1973.
Drums that delight the most unmovable heart
Big fan tbh
Would make a good high listen
I do like CAN, but not all CAN. Have to say this is not my favourite album of theirs. There's nothing as focused and brilliant as Vitamin C here. As you can tell by the amount of tracks, the 4 featured are quite sprawling. Fun to hear a few 'references' others have borrowed though - most notably The Fall's lift of the riff for 'Damo Suzuki' from Bel Air. Good, but not their greatest.
There's such a delicate touch throughout. Almost a fear of creating any kind of noise. Less is more. The album doesn't demand your attention, but it maintained mine throughout. Superb!
The sound is hard to describe on this album, especially in relation to Can's other albums. It's more open and fresh, more sunny. It doesn't rock or stay grounded in the same way as Tago Mago or Ege Bamyasi. It's lighter, more tropical, or happy. Like recognizable music that's been stripped down and then built up again in a way that's just a little uncanny. I can't put my finger on it, and I guess that's the fun of it. I'm not a fan of how the vocals are mixed in most tracks. It's obviously intentional how quiet or incomprehensible they are most of the time, but I just think it could've worked better. Some tracks just seem like unfinished ideas that were patched together. The ideas are great, but just don't seem totally fleshed out. This results in a feeling that there isn't a "point" or "objective" to the album, but rather it's more chaotic and kind of wanders forward without getting anywhere. The drums reflect this forward motion. Perhaps the point is that there is no point, who the fuck knows.
Actually really liked it, the second and last song were really good I thought, will listen again
Cool stuff! Love it. Seems like they influenced a lot of future bands with this sound.
Sounds almost like it could be a Techno album in a way. Can were massively ahead of the curve and it shows today in their appreciation they get from music snobs. This is generally their highest regarded album, but I like other Can albums more than this one. This is Can at their most refined, but it loses the wacky and zany edge I notice on the likes of Monster Movie and Ege Bamyasi. I still really like Can and this album though. Seldom does a 4 song, 40 minute album go by so quick. The drums are hypnotic on this one.
Rating: 7.5/10 A bit meandering at times but what a great listening experience. A lot of ideas here are fantastic, the last track is not as good as the rest of this but everything was very enjoyable.
This was a really funky and avant-garde album, which I enjoyed. I never heard of them before, although I've seen the album cover once or twice. And although I don't prefer 15-20 minute long songs, I felt that this album finished rather quickly. I mean I think it's easy to process and it is easy to listen to. I won't pick a favourite on this album I liked all the songs somewhat equally, but for different reasons. I would rate this 3.7/5
This was effortlessly cool
Jazz smoke lounge like
Very interesting album. Feels like it was way ahead of its time. 3.5/5.0: Very Good
Can continues to surprise me. I'd only listened to them as a result of this list, and I'm now fascinated with them. Future Days has been my favorite so far.
Bonkers that this albums arrived like twenty years early...maybe thirty? It's interesting and fun and has twists and turns. I like Can.
groovy
Literally never ever heard of these guys, and this was quality stuff. Long-form jams, but in an ambient way, not in a wanky way. Sounds so modern to my ears too. FUN FACT: Just discovered that the song 'Turtles Have Short Legs' by CAN sounds very much like the Instructor Mooselini level in Parappa the Rapper. Now you know.
